The comeback player of the year Local woman overcomes Guillain-Barre Syndrome By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge On Tuesday evening, Mandy Bircher took her place at third base for Neumann’s Bar. It was the opening game of the Edwardsville Parks and Recreation Summer Softball League, at the Jaycee Field at Hoppe Park, and the fact that Bircher was playing softball at all was something of a miracle. A year ago, Bircher, who works for the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, was starting her 67th day at Anderson Hospital, learning to walk and talk again following a nearly fatal bout with GuillainBarre Syndrome. The neurological disorder, which attacks the peripheral nervous system, strikes only one or two people out of 100,000. By the time Bircher made it to Anderson, on March 12, it had progressed from her feet to her thighs, and within eight hours it had

nearly reached her diaphragm. She spent 32 days at Anderson’s intensive care unit, and for 43 days she dealt with a feeding tube. At one point, Bircher thought she would never walk again. But on May 21, she left the hospital a month ahead of schedule, and by July she was able to throw a softball. Running, however, caused her legs to wobble. “You’re mind says ‘Take off,’ but your legs say ‘No way,’” she said during an interview last year. After therapy at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, Bircher asked Lindsey Kampwerth, a friend and teammate, to help her get started on fitness routine.She began working out four or five days a week at Apex Fitness Center, in Highland. By November, she began hunting again, and bagged a buck. Weeks before her first game back with Neumann, Bircher went turkey hunting. “She always seems to live life to the fullest,” said Neumann coach Sarah Grounds. “There was never really a gone period. She was always there for us as far as we were concerned.”

On Tuesday, a handful of fans were on hand for Bircher ’s return. Co-worker Cathi Gitchoff, wearing an “I Survived the Mandy Quatto Bircher Benefit,” t-shirt, showed up with her grandkids, Ben and Noah Manibusan. In the bottom of the first, Bircher, who was up second, grounded a single off the pitcher ’s bare hand. The next inning she flied to left, and she singled to left in the fifth, when Neumann scored three more runs to take a 6-2 lead. Later, she lined another single to left. Neumann’s won, 11-2. Afterward, the players gathered at home plate for a picture. Mandy walked over to the bleachers and gave Ben and Noah a hug. Noah, who attends Lincoln Middle School, handed her a poster she had made: “YOU GO MAN!DY!” “You Rock!” “Kick Some Softball Butt” “Uh-Mazing” “Batter Up!” Bircher said she felt good, but slower than before. “What did I go, 3 for 4?” she said. “It was nice. Good to be back, that’s all I can say. Just thankful to be here.”

People People planner Zoo to add education gallery at The Living World The Monsanto Company today presented a gift of $2 million to the Saint Louis Zoo to fund the Monsanto Education Gallery at The Living World. The Monsanto Education Gallery will be a flexible, multipurpose area in the lower level of The Living World and will provide an expanded learning area for the Zoo’s Education Department. The area will provide guests and visitors an additional space to receive high quality science, environmental and conservation education programs, activities and guest experiences from the Zoo staff and trained volunteers, all designed to deepen the connections between people and animals. The experience at the Monsanto Education Gallery is focused on families with children ages birth to nine, though all ages are welcome. “It has long been our dream to have a place where children

can experience meaningful new links with nature and the animal world, and now Monsanto Company has made that possible,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Bonner, Dana Brown president & CEO of the Saint Louis Zoo. “We strongly believe that if children enjoy programs and activities that connect them to our animals, they will be more interested in helping them and protecting their future.” The first program to use the Monsanto Education Gallery will be the ZOOmagination Station, the Zoo’s new discovery room experience that invites young children and their caregivers to create, explore, investigate and imagine, while discovering the animal world together. Other programs to be held in the new gallery will include education activities for scouts and youth groups, and many of the Zoo’s summer learning camps, such as Camp KangaZoo and Camp Joey. “Monsanto and the Saint Louis Zoo share the goal of encouraging hands-on, scientific education for young people and families though unique programming and activities,” said Hugh Grant, Monsanto Company chairman, president and

CEO, who presented the check at the Saint Louis Zoo. “The Monsanto Education Gallery will help combine education, inspiration and dedication to the sciences, which are essential to addressing the global challenges of feeding a growing planet while also preserving it. “We commend the Zoo for its ongoing efforts to promote science-based learning,” Grant continued. “We hope Monsanto’s investment will benefit the greater St. Louis community that we have called home for more than 100 years.” Currently, the Saint Louis Zoo boasts one of the largest zoo education departments in the nation and strives to incorporate learning experiences in all public areas of the Zoo. With experiences such as the Monsanto Education Gallery and the ZOOmagination Station, the Zoo hopes to encourage families to spend more time with and in nature, facilitate constructivist learning for children and their caregivers and provide opportunities for children to discover the wonders of nature that will begin them on a path to stewardship of our planet.

People People planner Chesterfield Garden Tour set Chesterfield’s fourth annual Garden Tour will be held Saturday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine. This self-guided tour offers six distinctly different residential Chesterfield gardens for a day of inspiration. A variety of gardens are featured this year, each illustrating a different area of gardening such as those dealing with slopes, drainage, full sun, shade, and water features. New to the tour this year are three connecting gardens, which enhance the neighborhood as well as each other ’s space. All gardens were homeowner designed and planted. Kay Folsom, event chairperson, states that, “All of our homeowners have successfully dealt with problems that arise in everyone’s landscape plans. The uniqueness with which they have addressed their individual gardens illustrates creativity, patience and hard work.” Ponds, pools and waterfalls can also be found on the tour along with entertainment and relaxation areas. Patio tables will be set in some gardens by area floral designers. Imogene’s Tea Room & Botanicals, Mary Tuttle’s and FOB St Louis will charm participants with their whimsical table designs and floral arrangements. Master Gardeners will be on hand, as will the various

These prehistoric bugs will join the permanent residents of the Butterfly House: living beetles, roaches, tarantulas, spiders, scorpions and other insects and arachnids. Delve deeper into the world of prehistoric critters with Jurassic Bugs Family Days. Drop-in anytime from 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the last Saturday of June, July, August and September to explore ancient arthropods and the living insects of today through games, activities and crafts geared for

children ages six to 12. The Butterfly House is located at 15193 Olive Blvd. at Faust Park in Chesterfield, Mo., accessible from Interstate 64 at exit #19B. Music Tuning in Chamber Chorus to close out season “Home-Thoughts from Abroad” is certainly a fitting title for this final concert of the 54th Saint Louis Chamber Chorus season. The Chorus revisits its English roots and welcomes back Artistic Director Philip Barnes from nearly a year in his native England singing with the Norwich Cathedral Choir. Forming the heart of the program is the Mass for five voices by William Byrd, a perfect example of polyphony from the time Queen Elizabeth I. Interspersed among the Mass’s movements are hymns motets and partsongs exploring the concept of “home.” These include Benjamin Britten’s “Hymn to St. Cecilia,” written as the composer made his way home to wartime Britain, and Herbert Howells’ patriotic “Inheritance.” Other music from England includes two settings of Robert Browning poetry by Greville Cooke, as well the world premiere of “Exaltbo” by Dr. Magnus Williamson and commissioned for this concert by the Chamber Chorus. Of course, “home” means different places for different people. So, the program also features music from far beyond British shores. Sydney Guillaume of Haiti offers a prayer for his tragedy-ridden home and Howard Helvey sets the lyrical poetry of St. Louisan Sara Teasdale to music written specifically for the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. Music Tuning in Ray Stevens returning to Branson Multi-platinum recording artist, songwriter, two-time Grammy winner and Branson legend Ray Stevens returns to the town he helped put on the map, with the show that audiences have been clamoring for! Ray returns for a special celebration of 50 years in the music business with a six week run at The Welk Resort Theatre from September 15th thru October 23rd. With over 14 million singles, albums and videos sold in his career, Ray Stevens brings all of his hits to the Welk Resort stage: from the hilarious “Ahab the Arab”, “It’s Me Again Margaret”, “Mississippi Squirrel” and “The Streak” to his new hit “We The People” and the classic “Everything Is Beautiful”. Born in Clarkdale, Georgia, Ray Stevens started playing the piano at 6 years old. He knew then that music would be his life and he pursued a career that has spanned the entertainment world. playing on recordings for Elvis Presley, and working with the great Chet Atkins, as well as recording for numerous Pop and Country artists of the day. Ray knew he needed a hit song for the show, and the end result of three days spent in his basement writing was “Everything Is Beautiful”, his first #1 hit on the Pop charts, and the song that won him his first Grammy for Male Vocalist of The Year. In 1974, while flying to Los Angeles, Ray read an article about a new fad among college students called “streaking”. Inspired, he jotted down a few notes and when he got home, he wrote “The Streak”, Ray’s second #1 hit on the Pop Charts. For the next 10 years, Ray would record chart-topping hits, including “Shriners Convention”, “Mississippi Squirrel Revival” and “It’s Me Again Margaret”.

1991 brought the opening of his two thousand seat Ray Stevens Theatre in Branson, Missouri. Considered one of the pioneers of the “Branson Boom”, Ray performed 12 shows a week during the season to over 1.6 million fans. During the next two years, Ray would include his Branson show in his video releases, selling millions of videos worldwide. After 1993, Ray decided to take his show on the road, but still owned his theatre in Branson, and leased it to other productions. In 2004, he returned to Branson and reopened his show for two more seasons, finally closing at the end of 2005. For years, Branson audiences have asked, “When will Ray be back?” Now, after 5 years, Ray Stevens returns to Branson with all of his hits, all of his laughs and what he promises will be his best show yet. Travel Travel briefs Seeing the sights can earn Nebraska vacationers prizes LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Folks vacationing in Nebraska can win prizes if they see enough of the sights this summer. The state Travel and Tourism Division has come up with the Nebraska’s Byways Passport Program. Twenty-seven attractions are listed on a souvenir passport. These locations across the state also are where travelers can pick up the passport and start playing. Tourists receive a stamp at each stop. At the end of the trip, visitors send in a tear-out sheet from the passport. If the passport has nine stamps, travelers get a Nebraska Byways T-shirt; 18 stamps, a digital photo frame; and 27 stamps, a flip video camera. Armani hotel opens in Dubai’s Khalifa tower DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A luxury hotel crafted by designer Giorgio Armani opened Tuesday as the first landmark tenant in the world’s tallest skyscraper. The 160-room Armani Hotel Dubai is a welcome bit of good news for Dubai’s leaders after the troubled debut of the more than half-mile (828-meter) Burj Khalifa in January. An elevator malfunction forced a two-month closure of the spire’s observation deck — the only part of

the tower open to the public. The Italian designer was on hand for Tuesday’s opening ceremony, which was delayed a week because of travel chaos from the Icelandic volcano. He said his goal was to build a comfortable and stylish hotel that would leave an impression. “I wanted something very important, something to be remembered,” Armani said, dressed in a dark T-shirt and white trousers. “Something not just for the present, but beyond.” Armani was joined by the chairman of Burj Khalifa’s developer Emaar Properties, which has a partnership to open more Armanibranded hotels, including the next one in Milan. They have not disclosed financial details of their partnership. Armani’s Dubai outpost stretches from the base of the spindly, metaland-glass Burj through the eighth floor, then skips some two dozen stories before continuing on floors 38 and 39. It includes multiple restaurants, a spa and an outdoor swimming pool. Dubai’s newest five-star hotel is the first part of the 2,717 foot (828 meters) Burj Khalifa to open to the public since the 124th-floor observation deck welcomed its first visitors in January. The lookout unexpectedly shut down a month after the opening when an elevator malfunctioned. Emaar never disclosed details of what happened, which it attributed to unexpectedly high traffic and electrical problems. The deck quietly reopened earlier this month. The Burj Khalifa rises more than 160 stories, though the exact number of habitable floors is not known. Much of the building remains empty as work continues inside. Salazar promotes new outdoor initiative in Colorado MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (AP) — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is encouraging people to participate in a new initiative to conserve outdoor spaces and enjoy the outdoors. Salazar issued the call Sunday as he visited Mesa Verde National Park to promote better campgrounds and roads coming from about $10.1 million in stimulus money. The park is also getting a new visitors center and the biggest update to the Spruce Tree House Trail since the cliff dwelling opened to the public in 1908. President Barack Obama announced the “America’s Great Outdoors” program earlier this month and Salazar says officials will be traveling around the country to hear about the places people care

about. Trips to Florida’s Everglades and Los Angeles are planned so far.

Joan Baez to play Reno’s Artown festival in July RENO, Nev. (AP) — Folk music legend Joan Baez is among the performers slated to play at Reno’s 15th annual Artown festival, which is expanding to Virginia City for the first time for a three-day “Americana” celebration at the historic mining town. Organizers unveiled the list Thursday of more than 400 events to be spread over each day of July including theater, dance, music, visual arts, multicultural events and children’s workshops. Nearly two-thirds of the events are free at various venues around town, many at Wingfield Park on a downtown island in the Truckee River surrounded by a kayaking and whitewater rafting park. About 300,000 people attended last year. Officials estimate Artown has had an economic impact on the city in the neighborhood of $100 million since it began in 1996 with about 100 events spread over three weeks. “There’s an upbeat energy that permeates Reno each July and we’re thrilled that Artown can have that sort of impact,” the festival’s

Choose a music store

You’ve decided that you want to learn a guitar or drums. Okay. Now what. Because a musical instrument is an investment in both money and time, you need to find guidance. Lots of places sell guitars and drums but where do you find the guidance you need. Are you even aware of what you need? Once you think that you are serious about investing your time and money in learning to play some type if instrument you need to find a good music store that offers you selection, experience and price.

A good music store will offer: • A wide selection • Experienced service personnel • Competitive pricing • A commitment to the music industry

Selection Does the store have a wide variety of guitars and drums to chose from? Do they have several choices at different levels of experience (beginner, intermediate or professional)? Do they have used instruments that may suit your needs? And if you buy for a beginner, will they take a trade in when you are ready for a more advances model? The more you have to choose from the better equipped you will be to make the correct decision.

Music is an art form. There should be a feeling of true interest in keeping that art form alive and growing through future generations. Do your homework It is important that the family and/or potential resident decide what is most important to them in looking for a Senior Living Facility. Retirement communities vary in location, size, price, amenities, staffing, programs and services.

When you are faced with the job of finding a Retirement Community for yourself or a loved one, the question is often asked is "Where do I begin?" Many seniors have tired of the day-to-day chores of lawn and home repairs, etc. Look for a Retirement Community that offers the freedom of home, yet handles the day-to-day maintenance and security. A quality Retirement Community will offer many opportunities to socialize while maintaining privacy, dignity and independence. Residents can usually bring most of their own furniture and a few providers even allow small pets. The first step is to identify two or three facilities in your chosen area that meet the criteria you established: • If placement is urgent, due to illness or hospitalization, consult your hospital Social Worker or Discharge Planner for assistance. • If placement is "down the road" and you have time, call the Retirement Communities and ask them to send you their information packet including an activity calendar, newsletter and a menu. • Search Web sites. This is a good way to learn about and the retirement community. It is very important to tour the facilities you have chosen and to go with a list of questions. Keeping notes and checklists of services and building amenities available will enable you to compare facilities. It's important to look beyond the physical structure and spend the necessary time to ask questions; talk with residents and staff. Remember that some operate as non-for-profit, which often has the Senior's best interest at heart. When you are touring, remember the following: • Did you call for an appointment? • Was the facility clean and well maintained? • Does the Community offer a continuum of care such as Assisted Living services and Skilled Care should the need arise? • Were you offered lunch? • Was the staff friendly?

Listen and observe. When touring a Community, ask any questions that might come to mind. Senior Living is for adults who are self-sufficient and want the freedom and privacy of their own separate, easy-to-maintain apartment or home, along with the security, comfort and social activities of a senior community. It is by definition....Senior Living. Assisted Living is housing with services for people who need help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation, or medication management. It bridges the gap between Senior Living and Skilled Care. Skilled Nursing Care offers 24-hour medical care, including short-term rehabilitation as well as long-term care for people with chronic ailments or disabilities that require daily attention of licensed nursing staff. Continuing-Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are ideal for several reasons. The CCRC is a community of residences that include Senior Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Care, so seniors can stay in the same general location as their needs change over time. Bottom line is this: Visitd various Communities. Research and familiarize yourself with a Retirement Community that meets your need ands expectations.

Choose a furniture refinisher

Look for a refinisher with an established reputation and who specializes in furniture and wood repair. Be sure to check that their workmanship is guaranteed. Q: Can my Furniture be repaired on-site? A: Most refinishers attempt to conduct all repairs on-site. However, there are times where the extent of the damage will require your furniture to be repaired at an off-site facility. Make sure you aware of the procedure for off-site repairs. Q: Will the products used to repair my furniture be safe for my family? A: Look for a refinisher that uses predominately water-based products which have less odor and are safe for your family, pets and the environment. Some repair processes may require the use of more traditional products. In these instances, make sure to have adequate ventilation or simply work on the piece outside of the home. Q: What are the main types of damage that can be repaired in my home? A: All types and styles of wood furniture and surfaces. In many cases, items can be repaired instead of being replaced, which can save you money in the long run. Q: I have a white spot on the finish of my table, can this be repaired? A: White spots on furniture can result when heat (a hot pizza box for example) or water (from a glass) penetrate the surface. In many cases, this damage can be repaired on-site in a few hours or less. Q: My dog has chewed the leg of my table and

left some damage, can this be repaired? A: Yes pet damage can be repaired - to include dog chews, cat scratches and various other types of pet damage. The refinisher will inspect the damaged areas and provide options on how it can be restored. Q: I have a table that is showing some wear. What can I do to make this look better? A: There are several ways worn finish can be repaired. If the finish is still in good enough shape, a new coat of finish can be applied to achieve the desired result of an enhanced looked. However, if the finish is too badly damaged, the table will most likely need to be stripped and refinished. Q: Can I change the color of my furniture to match the rest of the furniture. A: Yes, It is generally very easy to take a light piece and darken it. Taking darker shades to a lighter shade requires more extensive processes – usually stripping and refinishing. Q: How long will the repair take? Will I be without my piece of furniture for an extended time? A: The refinisher should attempt to do many of the repairs in the customer’s home which reduces the turnaround time. However, sometimes the damage is too great and an item must be taken back to the shop for repair. As a guideline, minor repairs take one to two weeks and major repairs like refinishing take four to six weeks. Stop Furniture Damage Before it Starts Here are some helpful hints to help you keep your furniture looking its best.

•Most furniture is best cleaned with a damp cloth – adding a little soap is a good thing. Then dry the surface with a clean cloth. • Avoid all cleaners containing ammonia. It can damage your wood furniture. • Frequently dust with a soft, dry, clean cloth. • Make sure your furniture polish does not contain a high amount of alcohol as it can damage wood finishes. • Use coasters with felt or cork bottoms to reduce water rings. • Protect furniture from hot serving dishes with a table cloth, oven mitt or hot plate. • Be careful when cleaning, never allow moisture to be trapped between glass and a wood surface. Make sure surfaces are completely dry before the glass is replaced. • If you have pets that enjoy getting on wood chairs and table tops, protect those surfaces with a table cloth, chair cover or protective pad. Wood and Moisture: Preserving the Delicate Balance All wood has some moisture in it, however too much moisture or dryness can be an unseen enemy of your wood furniture. Moisture in furniture can often lead to mildew, while dryness can cause furniture to lose its natural luster and weaken joints. People who live in the St. Louis metropolitan area are so fortunate to have many choices to enjoy the arts. There are so many opportunities to enjoy award winning plays, musicals, art exhibits and more. Stages St. Louis is a great example of the talented people that live in this area, and perform on the local stage. For the past 24 years, they have made exemplary high quality productions with amazing sets, costuming and acting available to anyone who enjoys the theater. Stages St. Louis has recently announced its 24th season line-up. The adventure begins in the year 1839 in Hannibal, Mo., with the Tony Award-winning musical “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” continues as we jet to New York’s Madison Avenue in the 1960s with Neil Simon’s “Promises, Promises,” and ends with true romance on the midway in 1940s Iowa in “State Fair.” The season kicks off May 28 and runs through Oct. 3. In addition, the 2010 season for Theatre for Young Audiences presents “Disney’s The Arisotocats,” beginning Aug. 4. “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” May 28 – June 27 Celebrate the 175th anniversary of the birth of Missouri’s favorite son, Mark Twain! Bursting from the pages of Mark Twain’s classic novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” this Tony Award-winning musical features bluegrass and country music in the style of the famous novel. Stages is known for bring Broadway-quality musical theatre to St. Louis, and “Big River” is the production that proves the rule. The 2010 season opener features the most sophisticated stage design Stages has ever attempted, a $70,000 investment, with full-stage decking and a multitiered set that allows scenes in multiple locations to bring the epic adventures of Huck and Jim to life. “Furry Vengeance”

Brendan Fraser has built a small, dorky industry by being an exceptionally smiley fellow. In “Furry Vengeance” (directed by Roger Kumble), he plays a father, Dan Sanders, who has moved his family to the Oregon woods, where he hopes to please his demanding boss (Ken Jeong) by overseeing a new suburban housing development. His wife (Brooke Shields) and his mopey teenage son (Matt Prokop) miss the city. As Dan supervises the “Rocky Springs” development, an uprising takes form and the forest’s animals (a mixture of real-life, trained animals and CGI) resort to guerrilla warfare. The irony is that Dan’s company purports to be “green”; Dan is due a lesson in what it takes to be eco-friendly. (The message is courtesy production company Participant Media, which made “The Cove” and “Food Inc.”) No animals may have been hurt in this hammy production, but Fraser was. RATED: PG for some rude humor, mild language and brief smoking. RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street”

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you ... again? No seriously, Freddy’s back again? How is that possible? He’s a psycho killer and all, but still, he’s been through a lot since the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” back in 1984. After all those sequels, you’d think arthritis would have set into those knived fingers of his. The sixth “Elm Street” movie allegedly was the “Final Nightmare,” and still more films followed. Now, we have a remake of the first movie with Jackie Earle Haley filling in for the venerable Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Wes Craven’s core nugget of a concept remains intact: If you die in your dreams, you die in real life. It was truly inventive and disturbing then, and it allowed for an exploration of the frightening power of the subconscious. With his jaunty fedora and torn sweater, his hideous, scorched skin and his arsenal of one-liners, Freddy could be anywhere at any time. By now, though, the novelty has long since worn off, and cheap, generic scares are all that are left. The first feature from commercial and music-video director Samuel Bayer has a more artful look than you might expect from a horror remake; he also directed Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, and his “Elm Street” has a similar steamy sheen.

“Babies”

A clear line will be drawn in the sand — or the sandbox, if you will — when it comes to the way people respond to “Babies.” If you’ve never had one or you’re not into them — if the sound of cooing sends chills down your spine and the idea of changing a diaper turns your stomach — then you’re unlikely to be moved by this documentary that follows four babies from around the world, starting with birth and ending with their first steps. Be warned, the cute factor is high. But if you’re already a mom or dad — or especially a new mother — you’ll be moved nearly to tears by the beauty of the film’s universality, by moments that are so artful and intimate, they’ll make you wonder how it’s possible that any family would let a filmmaker in so close to shoot them. French director Thomas Balmes brings us the daily ins and outs, from mundane moments to milestones, of four infants living disparate lives in Namibia, Tokyo, San Francisco and Mongolia. He does this without narration, without marking the passage of time or even subtitles to clarify what’s being said. It’s a bold storytelling approach: Balmes runs the risk of alienating his audience members, the vast majority of whom won’t be able to understand what’s being said. “Babies” also frequently lacks momentum because there’s no strong narrative drive, just an easy, casual stroll from baby to baby. RATED: PG for cultural and maternal nudity throughout. RUNNING TIME: 82 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Casino Jack and the United States of Money”

The latest from Academy Award-winning documentary director Alex Gibney exposes the clutching, clawing venality of lobbyist-turned-prison-lodger Jack Abramoff and his cronies. It’s infuriating stuff, Abramoff’s arrogance symbolic of the I’m-getting-mine-and-then-some recklessness of our times. Through archival footage and interviews with former

Abramoff associates, the film presents a detailed account of the man’s rise to supreme Washington influence peddler, living the high life off the millions he charged Indian gaming interests and corporations looking to buy favor with the nation’s leaders. Like any good story, the film has surprises and thrills, laughs and absurdities, heroes and loads of villains. The story will leave you disturbed and disgusted, though, and a bit overwhelmed by the amount of information Gibney packs in, his exhaustive portrait of Abramoff eventually becoming exhausting. You’ll come away feeling a little smarter but glad that it’s over. RATED: R for some language. RUNNING TIME: 118 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Iron Man 2”

Lots of things get blown up and torn apart in “Iron Man 2,” as you would expect from any self-respecting blockbuster kicking off the summer movie season. The magnitude of destruction far exceeds that of its predecessor and includes repeated instances of characters walking away from a massive fireball without looking back. ’Cause looking back is for wimps. But that’s not all that gets obliterated here. The substance of the original “Iron Man,” the brain and the soul that set it apart from the typical seasonal fare and made it one of the best films of 2008, also have been blown to bits. Tony Stark had purpose back then, and despite the outlandish fantasy of his Marvel Comics-inspired story, as a person he had a believable arc. Here, he’s purely arrogant once more, with some glimmers of mortality and daddy issues. And Robert Downey Jr., so irresistibly verbal and quick on his feet in the first film (and in pretty much every film he’s ever made), seems to be on autopilot. Sure, he’s got a way with a one-liner, and his comic timing is indisputable, but he’s done this song-and-dance routine before and seems rather bored with it. Then again the character — and the sequel itself — are less defined this time. Narratively, “Iron Man 2” is a mess. Director Jon Favreau, working from a script by Justin Theroux, throws in too many subplots, too many characters. Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson are among the crowded supporting cast. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 124 min. 2-D only. Movies “Babies” may have violated labor laws By SANDY COHEN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — The babies you see in the movies and on TV are total divas. C a l i f o r n i a l a w re q u i re s i t : Infants need a doctor ’s note and legal permits before they can be stars. They’re only allowed on camera for 20 minutes a day. They must be accompanied by both a nurse and studio teacher — both paid for by the producers. The babies also need to be at least 15 days old. But the filmmakers behind “Babies,” a documentary in theaters Friday, say they didn’t have to worry about all that. They cast the film’s four international stars while they were still in the womb and filmed them unobtrusively in their natural environments, like “a wildlife film of human babies,” says producer Amandine Billot. Still, the film may have violated California’s tough child labor laws, since one of its young stars hails from the Golden State. The law is clear — it applies to any kind of film production using children in the state, including documentaries, says Toni Casala, founder of ChildrenInFilm.com, an online resource for parents and producers who want kids on camera. Presented without narration or dialogue, “Babies” follows four infants from around the world from birth until their first steps. Viewers see Ponijao and her traditional life among the Himba culture in Namibia; Bayarjargal, the son of nomads in Mongolia; Mari, growing up in the heart of Tokyo; and Hattie, a baby girl in San Francisco. The French director says he shot most of the footage himself, trying to disturb his subjects as little as possible, and often shooting alone with only natural light. Ye t i f s o m e o n e c o m p l a i n s about “Babies” to the state labor commissioner ’s office, an investigation could be launched, says staff attorney David Gurley. He declined to speak specifically

about “Babies” because he has not seen the film, but Gurley confirmed that state law would typically apply to all types of productions in California that include minors, including Hattie. The labor commissioner’s office can intervene in non-complying productions at any point, even after a film is released. Violators could be subject to fines

ranging from $50 to $5,000 per violation, Gurley says, adding the labor commissioner’s office could also “preclude a filmmaker from getting a permit to film in California in the future.” James Schamus, CEO of “Babies” distributor Focus Features, expressed confidence that no laws were broken in the making of the film.

Not much to marvel about By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Having just seen the new Iron Man sequel, I would have to honestly say that I’d rather see Marvel develop a movie based on Gwyneth Paltrow’s character, Pepper Potts. She’s the brains behind that crackpot Tony Stark who, no matter how noble he colors himself by endgame action, is still played like a spoiled child by the amazing Robert Downey, Jr. She keeps the story grounded, even in the throes of total befuddlement, and is certainly a lot cuter than her co-star. “Iron Man 2” picks up the story of Stark and his awesome exoskeleton about six months after the secret identity admission from the first film’s end. Tony is appearing before Congress, refusing adamantly to turn the technology over to our federal government. Downey is at his best in these playful scenes sparring off of a cantankerous U.S. Senator (played by Garry Shandling). But it’s all talk because, you see, Tony is

dying. The power core in his chest, the one that keeps him alive after his terrible accident, is poisoning his blood. Daily ingestion of chlorophyll and additional fuel cells are proving inefficient and he’s intent on keeping this secret at all costs. By naming Pepper as his successor as CEO of the Stark company, Tony again shocks everyone. Except that we don’t really care. There is so little interesting plot development in this film that I literally hated anything that wasn’t blowing up

(like the technology expo at the end), making snarky jokes (Stark reclining in a giant donut), or looking good in highheeled shoes (seriously, Gwyneth is doing something right). The main villain in “Iron Man 2” is known, apparently, as Whiplash, though we only meet him as Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke). Vanko is a heavilytattooed physicist son of a competitor of Stark’s father (John Slattery). His distrust for Tony and for Iron Man is strong, but forced. There is little build-up for his first attack, using laser tentacles to bring down the happiness at the Monaco Gran Prix. Rourke is a hot commodity at the moment (just like Downey after the Christmastime success of Sherlock Holmes), but playing the thug Ivan Vanko, is a step in the wrong creative direction after knocking his Oscarnominated role in “The Wrestler” out of the park. There is nothing to sink one’s teeth into within this film. After taking off like a bottle rocket in this picture he sustains nothing of the eerie edge that he initially

shows and bows out too quickly to be of any real consequence as an archenemy. The normally inspired Sam Rockwell a l s o c o - s t a r s a s J u s t i n H a m m e r, a business rival of Stark for a government weapons contract. He’s a buffoon, re a l l y, a n d o n l y o n s c re e n t o p ro v i d e financial resources for the bad guys to get their work done. Nothing felt well thought out, especially the role of Natalie Rushman (Scarlett Johansson), Stark’s new personal assistant. She’s also a killer spy working with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on his latest S.H.I.E.L.D. exploits. Don Cheadle m a y h a v e r e p l a c e d Te r r e n c e H o w a r d as James Rhodes, but it doesn’t really make any difference. He’s barely around long enough to make an impression. The biggest reveal of the entire story was a setup for the movie about another Marvel hero, Thor, that c o m e s o u t n e x t S u m m e r. B i g d e a l . I wasn’t impressed.

Homegrown gets new meaning BY KRISTA WILKINSON-MIDGELY For The Edge Put down that box of powdered cheese and elbow macaroni and step into Township Grocer where you’ll find food that is fresh, local and a whole lot healthier for you than anything you’ll get from a box or a drivethrough window. Edwardsville residents were first introduced to chef Amy Zupanci’s passion for seasonal, locally grown ingredients 19 months ago with the opening of her downtown restaurant, Fond. Now, she’s broadened that vision to include a new grocery store next door, which opens on Monday. “In the last year-and-a-half, we’ve had a really great response with Fond, but your choice shouldn’t have to be a $50 dinner or fast food – there’s a gray area. People should be able to have good clean, flavorful food at any price point,” said Zupanci. According to Zupanci, the store will stock locally sourced meat, fruits and vegetables, h e r b s a n d d a i r y p ro d u c t s . T h e c h e e s e selection is something she is particularly p ro u d o f . Wi t h t h e e x c e p t i o n o f a f e w specialty items from further afield, such as gourmet chocolate from Chicago and

New grocery store opens on North Main Street hazelnuts from Oregon, Zupanci and her staff will be butchering, bottling, canning, pickling and labeling most of the products themselves for the grocery’s own retail line of meats, vinaigrettes, sauces, dressings and relishes. They’ve even got a small garden in the back for growing some of their own veggies. Customers will be able to pop in for a tub of homemade crème fraiche or walk away with an entire box full of ingredients enabling them to go home and make the shop’s latest recipe of the week for themselves. Zupanci said samples will also be available so shoppers can try before they buy. “We’re doing the hard work for them. We’ve done the research, tasted everything and we know our suppliers first-hand so we can present the very best this area has to offer,” said Zupanci. It’s also gives area residents the chance to sample Fond’s flavors at a fraction of the price. A selection of lunch items will be available to take away for around $8. “The grocery will be the everyday selection for that. It’s creating an opportunity to dine well and have great food that’s homemade and from scratch. It’s an extension of Fond

but it will be take out. It’s going to be a onestop shop that allows customers to control their costs and be really selective,” said Zupanci. According to Zupanci, the idea for the grocery has been around since she first developed her business plan for Fond. To her, eating fresh, healthy foods from the local area should be available to everyone whether it’s a special meal in a fine restaurant or a weeknight dinner with the family. When the building next door became available, that was all she needed to put her plan into action. She pitched the idea to an investor who immediately said yes. With less than a week to go until opening, To w n s h i p G ro c e r y i s n e a r l y re a d y f o r business. “ N i n e t y p e rc e n t o f t h e i n v e n t o r y h a s arrived so now we’re stocking shelves and canning and printing labels. The heavy lifting is done,” said Zupanci. “We’re just really excited.” Township Grocery opens on Monday, May 10 at 102 North Main St. in Edwardsville. A delicious alternative Grant’s American Restaurant a well-kept Ozark secret By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge When traveling into the Ozarks area, most people plan to make a stop at Lambert’s Cafe. This was the plan for my husband and I as we traveled through Springfield, Mo. We had a commitment at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, so we were on a bit of a schedule. Of course the line at Lambert’s was very long and there was an hour and a half wait, and this was at 1 p.m. Disappointed, we began to look around us to see if there was another option. Across the street in a strip mall of sorts, we saw a sign for “Grant’s American Restaurant.” We reluctantly tucked our tails between our legs and drove across the street thinking that we were not going to enjoy this lunch nearly as much as we thought we were. We walked in to a kind of eclectically decorated dining room that had both tables and huge booths. We immediately were attracted to the large booths that had half walls of sorts, to allow for a little privacy. We were greeted very friendly by a young woman who looked like she was due to have a baby any minute. Although most likely tired of being asked, I still inquired and she happily shared that she had about 10 days to go and it was a little girl. The waitress quickly approached

our table and shared information about the cuisine, and especially the fact that everything, including their bread, was made fresh daily and they used all the freshest ingredients. My husband eyed the “Oh, it’s good!” Onion Rings selection on the appetizer list and immediately made his request. We were also brought a basket of freshly made cheese bread that was very delectable. The onion rings arrived and the description of “large portion of hand battered sweet onions deep fried to perfection and served with a side of house

ranch dressing,” was exactly what we received. The sweetest onions imaginable were coated with a batter that was wonderful. You didn’t need the ranch dip, but it was good too. The onions still had a tad of crunch to them making for what I would consider the “perfect” onion rings. We each ordered sandwiches, a “Deluxe Club” and a “Fruited Chicken Salad.” As you can imagine, I was the chicken salad orderer. Both came on homemade oven toasted bread with a hand cut regular and sweet potato fry mixture. You can choose soup instead of the fries, but you really should try the fries at least once. They are amazing. We saw unbelievable salads pass by to other tables, fresh hand tossed pizzas, even a magnificent fruit and cheese plate that we found later to be called “Abi’s Plate.” As we ooohed and aaahhhed over our lunches, a gentleman was bussing the tables around us and carried on a nice little conversation with us as he went by. Very nice. After we stuffed ourselves and got our leftovers to-go for a later-inthe-day snack, I told my husband that I had to let others know about this place. Most of us have heard of Lambert’s, but no one had probably heard of this fantastic dining experience. I approached the waitress and explained what I do

and she quickly got the chef, who was none other than the nice bus guy! I had to respect that the chef would step out from behind the kitchen to pitch in and help clean up. In turn, the chef quickly took me to the young pregnant lady who greeted us and introduced her as his wife! A real family affair. They were thrilled at the prospect that I would spread the word about their fantastic place. They invite anyone and everyone to stop in if they are in the area and promise that you won’t be disappointed, even if you were hoping for Lamberts! We sure weren’t. We even kind of chuckled as we saw the long lines of people across the street as we left. We knew that they would be waiting a long time for a meal, when they could have a great one immediately, right across the street. Grant’s has a full menu that is great for lunch or dinner. Not only are the appetizers, soups, salads, pizza pies, pastas, and entrees to die for, but good luck saving room for the most fabulous desserts you will see in a long time. Dining Delights Southern fare continues to gain popularity NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Contemporary southern cooking is getting a taste of something fresh — respect. Even above the Mason-Dixon Line, the food of the South no longer is about fried chicken and barbecue cliches. It’s a celebration of local, vibrant produce and carefully raised meats; of exotic ingredients like collards, okra, pork bellies and grits; and of traditions and cultures as deep, varied and flavorful as the foods. “The South has always been cyclically hip,” says John T. Edge, director of Southern Foodways Alliance. “But now it’s become a permanent condition. America is coming to appreciate the range of culture and tradition in the South.” That appreciation has made it possible to dine on great downhome food in places as varied as Oregon, Illinois and New York. At Hungry Mother in Cambridge, Mass., for example, chef Barry Maiden serves up what he and his partners call “contemporary American” food. The menu sports cornmeal-dredged catfish and other southern classics that draw on Maiden’s childhood in rural southern Virginia. “For a few years now I think southern cooking has become known as a serious type of cooking,” Maiden said. That interest also has produced a flood of award-winning cookbooks and chefs that can do better than just hold their own against the rest of the country. This year ’s James Beard Foundation cookbook awards, for example. All three of the finalists for top American book are southern — “My New Orleans,” by John Besh; “Real Cajun,” by Donald Link; and “The Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern,” by Matt Lee and Ted Lee. Food & Wine magazine will even devote its September issue to the region and its food. “We’ve seen a huge rise in interest in the food of the South outside the South,” says Dana Cowin, the magazine’s editor-in-chief. “We’re seeing an expansion of ideas for southern food being adopted by cooks in other areas. There are people doing wonderful southern cooking in New York, in Boston, in Chicago.” In many ways, the South has benefited from a growing national interest in local and crafted foods. “A few years ago you used to go to the farmer ’s market and everything was from Florida or California,” says Kathleen Purvis, food editor at the Charlotte Observer and chairwoman of the James Beard Book Awards Committee. “Now it’s locally grown for the most part, and that is certainly a reflection of southern cooking, which is closely tied to the land.” She also thinks the interest isn’t all that new, pointing out that

Craig Claiborne was writing about the South during the ’70s, and Joe Dabney won a Beard award in 1999 for his cookbook “Smokehouse Ham, Spoon Bread, & Scuppernong Wine.” In explaining the appeal, Edge points to the variety of southern cooking, which includes Cajun, Creole, soul and seafood. “It’s an area comparable in size to Western Europe,” he says. “And it has the same range of cultures.” Television also has played a role, giving voice to advocates such as Paula Deen and her sons, Jamie and Bobby Deen, who have launched their own shows and cookbooks. The scattering of southerners across the country that has taken place in recent years — some forced by Hurricane Katrina — may also account for some of the spread of down-home fare. “I used to take the pimento cheese sandwiches my mother made for my lunch, the red velvet cakes for my birthday, the grits for Sunday breakfast for granted,” says Bon Appetit magazine restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton. Moving north made him a p p re c i a t e t h e r i c h c u l i n a r y traditions of the South, says Knowlton, who grew up in Atlanta. “When chefs started focusing on local food, the South was a natural place for them to focus,” he says. “Both in terms of flavor and tradition.” Because of that, Knowlton says he now can get such southern delights as boiled peanuts, deviled eggs and

his beloved pimento cheese in cities from Portland, Ore., to Portland, Maine. “And you practically can’t find a restaurant now that isn’t serving Anson Mills grits,” he joked, referring to the Charleston, S.C., company that specializes in heirloom grains. Besh, one of the contenders for this year ’s Beard award, says he sees the interest as a sign that the country’s culinary appreciation is maturing, that Americans all over are taking pride in the nation’s various cultures. “We’re finally comfortable with where we are as a country,” he says. “We are more open to the traditions in this country now, and the South has remained true to those traditions, especially its food traditions.” Those traditions are celebrated at the Southern Foodways Alliance, the goal of which is to “document, study and celebrate Southern food cultures,” according to Edge. “The South has always been close to its roots,” he says. “There is a food tradition here that continues and is celebrated.” Southern food also has some advantages, including a longer growing seasons and a tradition of using local ingredients, according to the Lee brothers, who won the American cookbook category in 2007 with their book, “The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook.” ••• This dense, rich cake from Joan Aller ’s forthcoming cookbook,

“Cider Beans, Wild Greens and Dandelion Jelly” (a collection of recipes from southern Appalachia due out in June), is remarkably easy to make, but incredibly flavorful. She says it is based on cakes assembled at family reunions and other celebrations in the region. She says each family would bring a single layer. The collection of layers then would be assembled into a single cake at the event. For most of us, the two layers in this recipe probably will be plenty. MOUNTAIN MOLASSES STACK CAKE Start to finish: 1 hour 40 minutes (40 minutes active) Servings: 8 For the cake: 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature 1 large egg 1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt For the filling: 2 cups finely chopped apples 1/2 cup water 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon To make the cake, heat the oven to 350 F. Lightly oil and flour the bottoms of two 8-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the brown sugar and butter until light. Slowly add the egg and molasses, then blend well. Beat in the buttermilk, vanilla and nutmeg. In a second bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Slowly add the flour mixture to the molasses mixture and mix until thoroughly incorporated. Pour half of the batter into each of the prepared cake pans. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted at the center of each cake comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in their pans on a wire rack. While the cakes cool, make the filling. In a medium saucepan over medium, combine the apples and water. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender. Stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring c o n s t a n t l y, u n t i l t h e m i x t u re thickens and is syrupy. Place one of the cooled cake layers on a serving plate. Spread half of the filling on top. Place the second cake layer on top, then spread the remaining filling over it.
