People For The Edge As summer approaches and temperatures begin to warm up, Raging Rivers WaterPark in Grafton, Ill., is gearing up for a milestone season filled with family fun. This year marks the park's 25th season in operation, and Raging Rivers is celebrating by offering a variety of specials and perks designed to make this one of the best seasons yet. Opening day is set for Saturday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m., and the staff at Raging Rivers is busy getting the rides and attractions ready for the thousands of water enthusiasts that will flock to the park this year. New this season at Raging Rivers is the addition of two new "Riverview Cabanas" that serve as private, fully covered retreats for guests looking to relax and unwind. Last year, Raging Rivers added three cabanas, and they were such a success, the park decided to add two more so that even more guests are able to escape the hot summer sun and enjoy the spectacular view of the Mississippi River. The cabanas are located above the Endless River and the Breaker Beach Wave Pool, sit 6-8 people and are available for all-day rental with a nominal fee. Raging Rivers will also be offering additional specials and perks throughout the summer in celebration of its 25th season. On the 25th of every month, from May to July, Raging Rivers will have specials that the park will reveal on its Facebook page and to email club members. Raging Rivers will also be hosting a big birthday celebration in July, the month it first opened. In addition, Raging Rivers will again offer discounts to military personnel throughout the season. An active military identification card will give each member of the serviceperson's immediate family the chance to spend a full day at the park for only $12 plus tax per person throughout the 2014 season. Military personnel will also get free admission to the park during Military Appreciation Week, from July 1 through July 7. Passholder Appreciation Day will be held the following Friday, July 11th, and will offer additional park perks to season pass holders. Guests are encouraged to stay in the loop on all specials and deals by visiting www.ragingrivers.com and signing up to be a part of the email club and/or by visiting www.facebook. com/ragingrivers and liking the page. "Whether you are looking for a day of adventure or prefer to relax and soak up the sun, Raging Rivers truly has something for everyone," said Donna Smith, general manager of Raging Rivers. "We are excited to offer even more perks this summer season for our guests as we celebrate our 25th season." Raging Rivers provides guests with entertainment that individuals of all ages can enjoy. Thrill seekers will appreciate the 500foot dual Cascade Body Flumes, which give riders a rush as they speed, twist and turn down the natural hills and contours of the park. They can also take a ride on the Runaway Rafts, a 600-foot long adventure through swift water and wild rapids to three pools; the Shark Slide flume, which floats riders down a 45-foot tunnel flume into a catch pool, and the one-of-

The two-bowl attraction takes riders down a tunnel flume, then swiftly into a giant vortex and ends by dropping the guest into a deep pool of water, incorporating three rides into one. For guests looking for a more relaxing experience, the park also features a 700-foot-long Endless River of cool, clear water that lets riders float along at a tranquil 2

½ mile per hour pace in a continuous loop; the 18,000-square-foot Breaker Beach Wavepool, which allows swimmers to relax when the waves are "off" and "ride the tide" when the four-foot waves start to roll, and the "just for kids" Itty Bitty Surf City that features a pintsized waterslide, splash pool, rain tree and tunnel area. Tree House Harbor provides another play area

for youngsters, featuring a crawl tunnel, overhead rope pulls, tunnel slides and the ever-popular bucket that randomly spills 1,000 gallons of water. The Austin Chronicle explains the band's sound as "Seventies American music with The Band and the Dead as obvious touchstones, plus the kind of country/almost-bluegrass of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.” Elizabeth McQueen (Austin, TX), after eight years of singing with Asleep at the Wheel, has returned to her own creative career making music ranging from jazz to rock and roll to country swing. Tif Ginn has been touring with the Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show for five years, fronting her own band, then playing and singing with Fred’s band. People People planner Circus Flora to open May 29 The beloved St. Louis institution, Circus Flora, powered by Ameren, returns for its 28th season to present "The Pawn," a chess game brought to life through the circus. The World CHess Hall of Fame and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis partner with the circus to create a delightfully imaginative world under the big top next to Powell Hall, May 29 to June 22. Every June, more than 30,000 audience members gather under the big top and leave behind the everyday, entering a place of intrigue and awe. Here the impossible is possible. Adults as well as children are enthralled by a performance that captures their imaginations and transports them to a bygone era. The Circus Flora experience is palpable: the audience is completely immersed in a spellbinding story that is woven through every detail, from performers to costumes to original music. Drawing from the history of chess, this mythic tale is steeped in right sights, sounds and the mystique of ancient Persia and India. The audience will journey to an exotic world where myth and intellect collide, and the stone city surrenders to the desert's every shifting sands. Follow the Pawn through his journey through curious creatures and intrigues: knights on mounted steed, bishops zigzagging across colored squares, chess pieces flying through the air. In this world, the chess pieces do not wait to be moved. They have their own adventures to play out under the big top. The tale is presented by a cast of hand-picked and internationally renowned circus artists. Making his debut under Circus Flora's big top, clown Andy Kuchler plays the Pawn, maneuvering through the enchanting world of the chess board, encountering friends and foes along the way. Kuchler will meet performers and characters such as an equestrian bareback rider, S. Caleb Carinci-Asch, as he balances fearlessly atop his gal-

loping horse. From Finland and making their U.S. debut, Duo Kate and Pasi will captivate with handto-hand and foot juggling finesse. Andriy Bilobrov and his Jack Russell Terriers will show the audience man's best friends like never before. Claire Kuciejczyk-Kernan mesmerizes the crowd from above with daring swinging-trapesze performance. Also joining this year are six rare, blue-eyed pied camels from the Canary Islands. "The Pawn" will also feature celebrated Colombian flying trapeze artists, The Flying Cortes, who will introduce new twists, spins and summersaults as well as returning favorites The Flying Wallendas and local troupe, The St. Louis Arches. Circus Flora presents a truly immersive experience unlike anything else in the country. As artistic director and producer David Balding explains, "Sometimes we need respite from our everyday realities. Circus Flora takes you out of the ordinary, and deep into a magical world. Once you enter the big top, you forget everything else." Circus Flora will not only thrill its audience, but it will woo with a beautiful storyline, delight with its comedy and – like any good work of art – is is an experience that is impossible to forget. Tickets are now on sale for Circus Flora’s 27th big-top production, "The Pawn," powered by Ameren. Call 314-289-4040 or visit www.circusflora.org for tickets. Tickets are also available at the Circus Flora Box Office at 3547 Olive Street in Grand Center.  Tickets start at $12y. Group tickets are also available. The Pawn opens May 29 with a peanut-free preview and runs through June 22. Show times are Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m.; Sunday at 1 and 5:30 p.m.; and “Little Top Wednesday” at 10 a.m., a special one-hour show for younger kids or the “kids at heart.” Founded in St. Louis in 1987, Circus Flora is a nonprofit performing arts organization dedicated to sharing the magic of classic, onering circus with audiences of all

ages. Circus FLora raises its big top every summer in the arts district at Grand Center. Through its year-round Clowns on Call program, the healing power of Circus Flora brings laughter and respite to thousands of patients and their families every year at two St. Louis-area children's hospitals. Visit www.circusflora.org to learn more.

Science Center to screen D-Day film The Saint Louis Science Center and 3D Entertainment Distribution invite audiences to step back in time with the new giant screen theater film D-Day: Normandy 1944, which opens at the Science Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on April 25, 2014. In May 1943, World War II is at its apex. To counter Hitler and the Axis forces, the Allies decide to open a second front on the western side of Europe. The Allied forces, led by U.S. General Eisenhower, have just months to organize the operation codenamed “Overlord,” with only a 50/50 chance of success, that will break Hitler ’s Atlantic Wall fortress and lead to the Battle of Normandy. Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly unique manner. D-Day itself is well-known, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world.

“We wanted to make a film to pay tribute to the millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians, who gave their lives for our freedom 70 years ago. Regardless of nationality, virtually everyone today has a parent, grandparent or even a great-grandparent with a connection to World War II,” explained writer and director Pascal Vuong. “I thought for a long time about how to produce a large format documentary on this subject, and finally found my own way of telling this complex story to family audiences using a brandnew ‘cocktail,’ mixing innovative film techniques.” Blending multiple cinematographic formats, including animation, CGI and stunning live-action images, D-Day: Normandy 1944 brings this monumental event to the world’s largest screens for the very first time. Exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics, audiences of all ages, including new generations, will discover from a new perspective in breathtaking OMNIMAX how this landing changed the course of history. “What I was drawn to in this film is that it tells us the story of D-Day in a new way that gives such clarity to one of the most important events in the history of mankind,” said Brokaw. “I originally thought this was going to be another traditional documentary featuring grainy black and white footage, but as soon as I saw the first minutes of this film on the giant OMNIMAX screen, I found it irresistible.” “After seeing this film, we think our audiences will feel a deeper gratitude for the courage and sac-

rifices of these champions of freedom,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center. “And, because we are a science center, we hope our audiences will discover a deeper appreciation of the science, engineering and technology involved in this monumental event.” Over three years in the making and with a budget of $5 million, all live-action sequences for the film were shot exclusively on location in Normandy, France. No fewer than five CGI and visual special effects companies also collaborated under the creative leadership of N3D LAND Films to complete the 43-minute film. The second large format documentary film from writer and director Vuong, D-Day: Normandy 1944 is produced by N3D LAND Productions and distributed worldwide by 3D Entertainment Distribution. Ronan Chapalain is responsible for the stereography and post production, and retired Colonel Peter Herrly is the main historical advisor. The original musical score was written by Franck Marchal and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra with conductor Paul Rouger. Producers are Catherine and Pascal Vuong and Sylvain Grain, and Normand McKay served as associate producer. The 70th anniversary of D-Day will be marked by national and local commemorations on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Eastern Europe, Asia and Australia throughout 2014. For more information about D-Day: Normandy 1944, please visit slsc.org.

Greenville. He will also present his one man show “Best of Hollywood” on Friday, June 13. Best’s career began in 1950 and he soon appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest legends including James Stewart in “Winchester ’73” and Humphrey Bogart in “The Caine Mutiny.” Best was also featured in two of Universal Pictures biggest franchises---“Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair” and “Francis Goes to West Point.” Fans of 1950s horror movies may remember James Best as the star of the 1959 cult classic “The Killer Shrews.” His television appearances included two episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show” and three episodes of “The Twilight Zone.” With over 180 acting credits to his name, Best’s most beloved character was Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane from 1979 to 1985 on “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Rosco, under the direction of Boss Hogg, spent each week chasing after the Duke boys. Car show organizers have received numerous requests to bring in a cast member from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Best is expected to be a big draw to the event. In conjunction with his appearance at the Greenville Graffiti Car Show, Best’s one man show---“Best of Hollywood”---will be performed the night before at the Globe Theater, on the Greenville square. This 90 minute journey through Best’s career offers fans an intimate look behind the curtains, soundstages, and backlots of the studios and stars. Television and movie clips will be woven through humorous anecdotes, reminiscences, and Best’s imitation of friend and co-star James Stewart. The Greenville Graffiti Car Show is Saturday, June 14 and will feature a variety of contests, food, and fun. The show is open to 1989 and older cars and trucks. Further details concerning the car show will be released soon. For more information, contact the Greenville Chamber of Commerce at (618) 664-9272.

DuQuoin State Fair announces theme The theme for the 2014 DuQuoin State Fair will be "Love A Fair: Since 1923," the fair's manager announced recently. "If there has ever been a fair that people have loved, it is the DuQuoin State Fair," Fair Manager Shannon Woodworth said.  "Since 1923, millions of people have fallen in love with the sights, sounds and smells of this fair. The relationship this fair has with the people of Southern Illinois is a bond that hasn't been broken for 91 years." The DuQuoin State Fair became a major area attraction almost from its start, but garnered national attention in 1942 when the Illinois State Fair in Springfield was suspended due to the grounds being converted into a World War II training center, explained fair historian Fred Huff. the new "Home of the Hambletonian" and suddenly was a fixture on the national sports scene.  Motorized racing, which had returned in the late 1940s, was equally prominent. In fact, Indianapolis 500 drivers became regulars in DuQuoin's three days of auto racing.  A.J. Foyt won 100-mile races at DuQuoin in 1960, '61, '63 and '64, the same years he was crowned national champion by the United States Auto Club. It has all resulted in an annual "Love A Fair" and the 2014 edition is scheduled for Aug. 22 through Sept. 1.

Travel Special events planned throughout the Cumberland Gap For The Edge Daniel Boone is returning to Kentucky. America’s pioneer hero is coming through Cumberland Gap on Saturday, June 14, as part of dedication ceremonies for the Boone Trace Project, an effort by six southeastern Kentucky counties to help visitors understand the pioneer’s legacy. Behind “Daniel Boone,” portrayed by veteran re-enactor and Boone descendant Steve Caudill (www.danielbooneofkentucky.com), will be a large party of historical interpreters in period dress. They’ll be portraying the “axe men” who came through the Gap in spring 1775 to help Boone mark the Boone Trace to the spot that became Fort Boonesborough, 120 miles away. The re-enactors will be joined by descendants of Boone and his wife, and the public is invited to participate in the free event. The walk is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. on Highway 872 in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, and proceed through the Gap to the visitor center at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park near Middlesboro, Kentucky. The dedication ceremonies will begin at 4 p.m. outside the visitor center. Visitors will be able to engage re-enactors in a period encampment starting at 2:30 p.m.; music by Trae McMaken (www.traemcmaken.com) will begin at 3 p.m. The premiere showing of a

new film, “Daniel Boone and the Opening of the American West,” will be held at 6 p.m. at the visitor center. The film’s producer, Lexington attorney and historian Kent Masterson Brown, will attend. Film tickets are available through Friends of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park by calling 606-248-2551.

Religion Resort rises where Jesus may have taught By ISABEL KERSHNER New York Times News Service MIGDAL, Israel — For the Rev. Juan M. Solana, it was the spiritual equivalent of striking oil. When he set out to develop a resort for Christian pilgrims in Galilee, he unearthed a holy site: the presumed hometown of Mary Magdalene and an ancient synagogue where experts say Jesus may well have taught. The project, which Solana, a Roman Catholic priest, describes as “providential,” will be blessed by Pope Francis during his visit to the Holy Land this month. The story starts in 2004. Solana, who directs the Pontifical Institute Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, a century-old complex that provides accommodations and a serene gathering place for Christian pilgrims, thought of building a similar facility in the Galilee region of northern Israel, where the Bible says most of Jesus’ ministry and miracles took place. After a search for suitable land, four privately owned plots were acquired on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee near the small Israeli town of Migdal and the destroyed Arab village of Al-Majdal. Both were named for the ancient town of Magdala, where the name of Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus’ most faithful followers, suggests she was from. Solana’s plan was to knock down the holiday cabins of the old Hawaii Beach resort, built there in the 1960s, and erect in their place a hotel for 300 guests, a restaurant and a lake-

side spirituality center for prayer and contemplation. Architects were hired, and the building permits finally came through in 2009. All that remained before construction could begin in earnest was to carry out a salvage dig on the site, a routine requirement in Israel. The Roman Catholic Church and the archaeologists dispatched by the Israel Antiquities Authority did not expect to find anything significant, and intended to get the dig over with as quickly and cheaply as possible. But their spades struck history only a little more than a foot below the surface: a stone bench that, it soon became evident, was part of the remains of a synagogue from the first century, one of only seven from the Second Temple period known to exist, and the first to be found in Galilee. A local coin found in a side room of the synagogue was dated from the year 29 — when Jesus is thought to have been alive. Those involved in the project say it immediately brought to mind a biblical verse, Matthew 4:23: “Jesus went all through Galilee, teaching in its synagogues, preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God, and curing the sicknesses and the ailments of the people.” The site of the dig was only about five miles from Capernaum, a known center of Jesus’ activities. Soon it was clear that the site was not just near Magdala; this was Magdala. The dig went on to uncover an ancient marketplace and a separate area of rooms with adjacent water pools, presumably used for producing the salty cured fish that Magdala was famous for; a large

villa or public building with mosaics, frescoes and three ritual baths; a fishermen’s neighborhood, scattered with ancient hooks and other equipment; and a section of a first-century harbor. The ancient synagogue was discovered at the precise spot where the architects had planned to erect an ecumenical chapel, to the right of the hotel entrance. The discovery of the ruins meant that the building plans had to be changed to accommodate them, and the restaurant and hotel are still under construction. But the new spirituality center is completed, with a boatshaped altar that blends with a view of the harbor and the Sea of Galilee. “Jesus used to preach to the crowds from Peter’s boat, so we tried to reproduce that idea here,” said Solana, who belongs to the Legionaries of Christ, an order founded in Mexico. “Our plans, with a higher providence, merged very, very strongly.” The pope is not scheduled to visit Magdala during his three-day trip to the region, which will include stops in Jerusalem, Jordan and Bethlehem. Instead, the tabernacle from the boat altar will be taken to the Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem to receive his blessing. Afterward, on May 28, the site will be officially inaugurated as the Magdala archaeological park, and the adjacent spirituality center will be dedicated in the presence of Israeli government representatives and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal. A tract of land next to the site has belonged to another Catholic order, the Franciscans, for decades.

Excavations there found some ancient ruins, but nothing of the significance of the first-century ruins of Magdala. The Franciscan property remains private, but Magdala has already been opened to the public. Two Canadians, Roy Fu and Elsie Chew, toured the ruins on a recent rainy weekday. “It’s not so deep,” Chew said. “It’s amazing to me that nobody found this before.” The ancient synagogue had some unusual features, including an ornately engraved stone block that archaeologists say was probably used as a table for reading the Torah. It is carved with columns and arches, a seven-branched menorah with vessels for wine and oil to each side, a 12-leaf rosette and chariots of fire. The stone appears to be a miniature of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed in the year 70, adorned with symbols also meant to commemorate the First Temple. “We do not fully understand the power of this stone yet,” said Arfan Najar, an archaeologist and co-manager of the Magdala dig, who first came to the site on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority and now works directly with the church. “Whoever did this saw the temple with his own eyes.” Najar said that Magdala, a Jewish town believed to have been destroyed by the Romans around the same time as the temple, was an especially important discovery because it is not obscured or overlaid with later construction. Every stone that has been found there was from the first century, he said. “It is the window we

were missing,” he said, “Jesus in the Galilee.” Dina Gorni-Avshalom, the archaeologist who manages the dig on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, said the synagogue and the reading table provided researchers with extraordinary insight into the nature of the link between the Jews of the north and the temple in Jerusalem, as well as the connection between Judaism and early Christianity. On top of that, she said, there was sufficient “circumstantial evidence” to assume that Jesus may have set foot there. In all, the site of the Magdala Center, as Solana’s project is now called, occupies more than 20 acres of land, which cost some $16 million to acquire. Completing the project will bring its cost over $100 million, Solana said, and only about a third of the necessary funds have been raised so far. Donors are offered sponsorship of one square meter of archaeological digging ($150) or building construction ($1,000). Two Mexican universities — one secular and one affiliated with the Legionaries of Christ — have joined the dig, and nearly 1,000 volunteers from around the world have taken part. The domed antechamber of the new spirituality center is dedicated to the women who followed Jesus. Mary Magdalene’s presence was prominent at two crucial points in the story of Jesus, the crucifixion and the resurrection; over the centuries, she has been conflated with other biblical women and has come to be associated with the figure of a repentant prostitute and a symbol of redemption.

its use of informants in the city's Muslim community. The department announced last month that it was disbanding a unit that tracked the everyday lives of Muslims. But it is fighting a lawsuit

that challenges its ongoing practice of cultivating Muslim informants to detect terror threats. The practice incudes debriefing Muslims who are stopped by police. The lawsuit was filed last year on

behalf of two Brooklyn mosques, an imam and three other plaintiffs. It asks a federal judge to declare the surveillance unconstitutional and halt it. The city has struck back by demanding to see any communi-

cations by the plaintiffs that mention terrorism, jihad or the war in Afghanistan. The plaintiffs say the city is unjustly seeking information that's private.

Video of kidnapped girls authenticated ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian authorities have verified the authenticity of video of kidnapped girls shown wearing Islamic veils and singing Quranic verses under the guns of their captors. Officials say 54 of the girls had been identified by relatives, teachers and classmates who watched the video late Tuesday. The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram captured nearly 300 school girls on April 15 from their school in remote northeast Nigeria. There is a growing international movement to win the freedom of the girls before they are sold into slavery or married off to fighters, or worse. In Washington, human rights attorney Emmanuel Ogebe said Boko Haram continues to try force Christians to convert to Islam. Jews and Muslims considered apostates are also targeted. Ogebe, a panelist on a Hudson Institute forum, said the extremists captured the girls because men have left remote towns with the belief that women and girls would not be harmed. A teen, Deborah Peters, says her father was killed in 2011 in the same village as the abductions. Peters, now a student in the U.S., says her father, a pastor, was slain because he wouldn't renounce his faith. Her brother was also gunned down as she watched.

"Deciding Annie Parker"

“Decoding Annie Parker,” based on a true story, is an often uneasy, yet sentimental and witty tale of two women, one a cancer patient and the other a geneticist. Canadian Annie Parker (Amy Morton) battled breast cancer in the 1970s — and beat it. But after losing her mother and older sister to the disease, she becomes convinced that cancer is stalking her family. Though most doctors then said cancer was a stroke of bad luck, Annie believes she’ll get breast cancer like her immediate family members. Annie checks for lumps daily. And after she discovers one, she must have her left breast removed. Meanwhile, in Berkeley, California, geneticist Dr. Mary-Claire King (Helen Hunt) is researching genetic links to breast cancer. When Annie learns of this, she starts doing her own research with a medical student and former nurse (Rashida Jones). Writer-director Steven Bernstein, who was inspired to write “Annie Parker” after reading Parker’s unpublished memoir, offsets gloomy moments in the film with ironic humor, as when Annie breaks from oral sex to suggest that she quickly check her husband for testicular cancer. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language and some sexual content.” RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Belle"

There may be no whiter genre than the costume drama. The flowing gowns, the horse-drawn carriages, the codes of aristocratic courtship all evoke an era not exactly known for diversity. That’s why the simple poster of “Belle,” a new film directed by Amma Asante, is so striking. A beautiful, finely outfitted black woman in an 18th century parlor room stares back with regal poise. The historical incongruity is all the more arresting because, it turns out, it’s real history. “Belle” is the based-on-a-true-story of an 18th century mixedrace woman, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), brought up in British aristocracy. While such a tale is undoubtedly rich, filled with questions of identity, class and race, “Belle” is unnaturally rendered like a Jane Austen story of dowries and engagements. It’s an awkward, ill-fitting match of social progress and costume drama convention. And those 18th century conventions of speech and etiquette are often gratingly stilted in “Belle,” stifling the film of any naturalism. Instead, “Belle,” made with fine intentions, has none of the uniqueness of its remarkable subject. “Belle,” written by Misan Sagay, was inspired by a 1779 double portrait of Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray — one biracial, the other white — captured in seeming friendship. Sagay and Asante (who’s made one film before, 2004’s “Way of Life”) were intrigued by the story behind the painting. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic elements, some language and brief smoking images.” RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Neighbors"

If ever two genres of film were inextricably intertwined, it would seem to be the frat house movie and the gross-out comedy. After all, do frats ever do anything that's NOT gross? Not in the movies, they don't. "Neighbors," starring (and produced by) Seth Rogen and

14

On the Edge of the Weekend

directed by Nicholas Stoller, proudly straddles these two genres and boldly tosses in a third: The "We've-just-become-parents, NOW-what?" movie. You know these: Baby arrives, cute as a button but bringing ALL kinds of trouble, and then things are resolved in a syrupy sweet finale. It's safe to say that syrupy sweetness is not a problem with "Neighbors." In fact, it is noisy, crude, profane, gross, and sometimes mean. Luckily, it's also extremely funny, and you'll realize by the end that it has some heart, too. Most importantly, what it may suffer in narrative coherence it makes up for with a first-rate cast — the reliably funny Rogen, the game-for-anything Rose Byrne, and in the most pleasant surprise, a truly excellent Zac Efron as an immature, narcissistic, vindictive and, by the way, unbelievably buff frat leader whose obnoxious brio might just be masking deeper issues. (Zac, as a parent who had to watch the "High School Musical" films at least 400 times, maybe more, let me just say: I forgive you now.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout." RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Palo Alto"

The Coppola family has given us Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire and some very good wine. Gia Coppola, 27, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, is the latest Coppola to enter the family business. "Palo Alto" is her debut, an adaptation of James Franco's book of short stories about disaffected California youth. From "The Outsiders" to "The Virgin Suicides," teenage wastelands have been a Coppola specialty, whereas Schwartzman presented a more idiosyncratic portrait of teen angst in the great "Rushmore." In "Palo Alto," Gia very much takes after the soft aesthetic of Sofia ("The Bling Ring," ''Somewhere") in presenting a cluster of direction-less California teenagers backed by a mellow, synthesizer-heavy score. "Palo Alto" is rife with the stylistic clichés established by Gia's aunt and directors like Gus Van Sant. But for a first film, "Palo Alto" shows promise in its character-first storytelling and its young filmmaker's evident ease with actors. Coppola doesn't force anything on her characters, instead capturing the unthinking momentariness of youth. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and pervasive language, all involving teens." RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Million Dollar Arm"

Let's face it, there's something about a baseball movie that just invites corniness. The hardest hearts soften at the mere sound of a cracking bat. It's hard for a filmmaker to resist laying the syrup on too thick. And so it is with the Disney film "Million Dollar Arm," which makes a direct, uncomplicated, er, pitch for your heart — a pitch that will probably hit its mark, despite your best instincts telling you this movie should really be subtler at almost every turn. Oh well. Somehow, this flaw doesn't feel like the biggest crime — especially when you have a high-quality cast at work. The quality starts with Jon Hamm, who by virtue of

May 22, 2014

his well-known charisma, makes a good case for his future film career, now that his days as Don Draper on TV's "Mad Men" are sadly ending. Like Draper, Hamm's character here, the real-life sports agent JB Bernstein (the film's based on a true story), has a certain narcissism at his core. Unlike Draper, however, this isn't a deeply drawn character. Whatever faults he displays at the beginning (he prefers to date sexy models, and he wants to make money — oh no!) are pretty much neatly cured by the end. In any case, the best parts of the story are actually not about Bernstein, but about the two young Indian men he brings to America in hopes of creating the next international baseball sensation — and opening up a huge, untapped market in the world's second most populous country. Hence the title, "Million Dollar Arm," which is the contest that Bernstein devises to find his young stars. As the film begins, Bernstein and his partner Ash (the always entertaining Aasif Mandvi) are searching for ways to revive their flagging business. A failure to land a major account means they can't even pay their LA office rent. One night, though, idly channel-flipping between a cricket game and Susan Boyle's famous out-of-nowhere audition on "Britain's Got Talent," Bernstein comes up with the idea to find cricket players who might be able to pitch a baseball. RATEDL PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for mild language and some suggestive content." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Godzilla"

No one can blame Gareth Edwards for admittedly feeling nervous when asked to helm a remake of the biggest monster movie of all time. Sure, the only other film he had directed happened to be 2010's "Monsters." But this time, it was Godzilla. Well, the latest iteration of the 60-year-old franchise is in capable hands. Edwards' "Godzilla" is a pleasingly paced 3-D spectacle that pays chilling homage to the artful legacy of the original 1954 film — Ishiro Honda's "Gojira" — while emerging as its own prodigious monster movie. Created as a symbol of the nuclear threat following America's atomic attacks on Japan in World War II, Godzilla's reappearance suggests the nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. in the Pacific after the war were really meant to hold the radioactive dinosaur back. This story begins in Japan in 1999 as nuclear physicist Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston, edgy in an unbearable wig) investigates questionable seismic activity at the Janjira nuclear power plant. When a team at the plant, including his scientist wife, Sandra (an underused Juliette Binoche), dies in what everyone believes is a natural disaster, Joe dedicates his life to proving that what caused the devastation was anything but natural. His obsession creates a rift between himself and his son, Ford. Fifteen years later, we catch up with Ford (played by a placid but sexy Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in San Francisco, where he lives with his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and their son. Serving in the U.S. Navy, Ford disarms bombs, a skill that later helps him save the planet from MUTOs — "Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism" — that emerge from a long dormancy and begin traveling the globe, feeding on radiation. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence. RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

This photo released by Tribeca Films shows James Franco, left, and Emma Roberts in a scene from the film, "Palo Alto."

Another Coppola debuts in "Palo Alto" By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The Coppola family has given us Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire and some very good wine. Gia Coppola, 27, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, is the latest Coppola to enter the family business. "Palo Alto" is her debut, an adaptation of James Franco's book of short stories about disaffected California youth. In "Palo Alto," Gia very much takes after

the soft aesthetic of Sofia ("The Bling Ring," ''Somewhere") in presenting a cluster of direction-less California teenagers backed by a mellow, synthesizer-heavy score. The film follows four high-schoolers largely outside of school walls. The settings of "Palo Alto" (which oddly contains nothing to contextualize it as the wealthy tech capital of its title) are house parties, bedrooms and soccer fields.

Emma Roberts stars as April, a gawky but pretty young girl. Though she's a type — a virgin, the "good girl" — she doesn't come off that way. Roberts, who has often played bigger, more theatrical characters, has never been better. As April, she shows a shy vulnerability, and the gentle timidity of the performance echoes through the film. She's drawn to the blond-haired, mop-headed stoner Teddy (Jack Kilmer, whose father, Val, makes a cameo as April's father), but begins an illicit affair with her inappropriately older soccer coach (Franco), a lecherous single father. Teddy pals around with his buddy, Fred (Nat Wolff), a joker and agitator — the kind of kid who tries terribly hard to be erratic and unpredictable. He's fooling around with the promiscuous

Emily (Zoe Levin). They're all acting out in desperate ways, experimenting with their identity and rudderless without parental guidance. Teddy wrecks a car and flees, only to be easily caught and sentenced (by an off-screen judge played by Francis Ford Coppola) to community service. In the opening scene, Fred rams his car into a wall for a laugh. Lacking confidence, Emily develops a reputation for oral sex. The kids of "Palo Alto" use each other, and the girls are usually the worse for it. But the film has more tenderness and delicacy than Franco's deadpan, violent stories. It doesn't sensationalize their partying or their sex lives, but sensitively depicts their lonely grasping in an empty world where adults either neglect, discipline or seduce them.

Point muddled in "Neighbors" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I don't really know a lot about Nicholas Stoller, but he must be a pretty talented director if he can interchangeably direct films like "Neighbors" and The Muppets. We're talking opposite ends of the content spectrum with these two. "Neighbors" is this week's lone wide release and the No. 1 film at the box office. Ostensibly, it's a comical story about a nice couple that goes to war with the fraternity devils that move in next door to their idyllic dream home. Instead, I found it to be a rather vivid account of the worst - even if well-intentioned - parents in America. But I might be missing the point. Mac Radner (Seth Rogen) and

his lovely Australian wife, Kelly (Rose Byrne), are first time parents, homeowners, and grownups. They've entered their mid30s without much of a clue. Their beautiful, emotive little girl, Stella, couldn't be more precious. Their house on a treelined boulevard is in the safe kind of neighborhood we all dream to live in. Mac even has a pretty secure job that gives them some stability. But trouble brews the minute the for sale sign comes down in the next yard. The boys of Delta Psi Beta are moving in and, as the cliché says, there goes the neighborhood. At first, Mac and Kelly want to be the cool older folks next door. They introduce themselves in an hilariously awkward '90s, hip-

hop fashion that sets them up as the butts of jokes to come. How is this scenario ever going to work out? After inviting themselves to the first big Delta Psi bash, the Radners learn that you cannot party at 35 like you did when you were 22. Drugs, debauchery, and an abandonment of sleep do not lend themselves to a credible next day. And my biggest problem with all of this? They leave the baby asleep in their own home ALONE while they party and depend on their iPhone-like baby monitor to alert them to any problems. I was half expecting the concept of child abduction to become a plot point somewhere in this dark comedy. Instead, it becomes "War of the Roses," college-style. When

fraternity president Teddy (Zac Efron) and his lackey/best friend VP, Pete (Dave Franco), refuse to cut back on the noise, girls, and booze, our uptight heroes have no choice but to seek revenge and hopefully get them in enough trouble that they have to move out of the neighborhood. So what kind of hijinks do these folks get into? Here are a few examples. When Mac breaks a pipe and floods the frat house basement, they boys face significant financial burdens. So they fearlessly use their sexual confidence to raise a bunch of money for the repairs. In return, the frat seizes all of the airbags in the Radner vehicles and tucks them into random place Mac is going to sit. Imagine a Whoopee cushion with a little extra kick!

May 22, 2014

After Kelly engineers a fight between Teddy and Pete, things turn dark and the fraternity is put on probation by the college dean (Lisa Kudrow). Retaliation is kept low-key for the sake of maintaining their lifestyle, but the Deltas soon find that their wiser neighbors are soon going to outwit them for good. The final bash at film's end is worth all the nonsense that these idiots put each other through, especially the mismatched fight between Teddy and Mac. But we already know these guys fight dirty. "Neighbors" runs 115 minutes and is rated R for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above a BLT with chips and a chocolate malt. Below, the exterior of Crown Candy Company.

Crown Candy Kitchen a St. Louis treasure By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Crown Candy Kitchen is an institution in St. Louis. Established in 1913, the Karandzieff family is still running it today, now with third and fourth generation family members doing the work. Lines are almost a given at Crown Candy, especially after the Travel Channel's Adam Richman featured the old school restaurant on both Man vs. Food and Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America. I've heard the stories about Crown Candy's awesomeness and watched Adam enjoy himself with the malt challenge and the gigantic BLT sandwich, aptly named the heart stopping BLT, but as for a first hand experience, I hadn't enjoyed that — until now. Recently, I decided to hit up Crown Candy prior to covering a Cards/Cubs game and the annual Edwardsville Tiger Busch Stadium game. I thought I'd make a day of it in the Lou and what better way to kick it off than with a "You Gotta Eat" column at my most famous location to date. I arrived a little after 11 a.m. on a Saturday and Crown Candy opens at 10:30 a.m. There was already a line wrapping out of the door and into the street at the North St. Louis location. A small area across the street with picnic tables was also completely filled with patrons. Fame has treated Crown Candy well. Once inside I was slapped in the face with the smell of candy and bacon, a heavenly combination. The dining area was packed with people. It is kind of a confined space without much seating, but exudes a nostalgic feel with a checkered floor, old small white booths and pictures adorning the walls from the 1950s and before. The candy counter is also there to

18

display all of the goodies. I had my blinders on though because I knew what my purchase would be. I have never been bashful in describing my love and exuberance for bacon, so my choice was easy — the heart stopping BLT. At the core of this mammoth creation is 12 slices of bacon cooked to a crisp. In comparison, it takes roughly 16 slices of bacon to equal a pound. It's a fairly simple sandwich, accompanying the bacon are three tomato slices, four leaves of lettuce, Miracle Whip and two pieces of thick toasted white bread. The most difficult concept with

On the Edge of the Weekend

May 22, 2014

the heart stopping BLT is figuring out how to take a bite out of it. It also comes with a exorbitant amount of potato chips and I had to add a Crown Candy staple to go along with my sandwich and chips — a chocolate malt. The malts and shakes at Crown Candy are signature items for the restaurant. If you're bold enough, there is a food challenge available where if you drink five malts in 30 minutes you get them for free. Once I received my malt and heart stopping BLT I headed across the street to the area with the picnic tables. The dining area inside Crown Candy was still full and not

looking to empty out anytime soon. I was amazed at the size of the BLT. There wasn't much fancy about it, it tasted like something you could create at home, but that's not to say it wasn't good. It was in fact very good. I learned on Man vs. Food that the bacon is cooked in the same old metal vats where the chocolate is cooked at Crown Candy. Though the bacon didn't taste like chocolate, it had a crisp and potent flavor. The real all-star of my meal though was the chocolate malt. It had such a rich flavor and great consistency and combatted the saltiness of the bacon on my palate.

As I barreled through my heart stopping BLT I found myself beginning to get a bacon buzz. There was so much bacon, it was almost too much bacon, but I do stress almost. There is no such thing as too much bacon. By the time I got to the Cardinal game I felt like I was in a bacon coma for the first couple of innings. I was so full I couldn't concentrate on the game and wasn't snapped out of it until Matt Adams smacked a second-inning homer for the Cards to go on top of the rival Cubbies. As for the price, I paid about $15 for my meal. That may sound a little expensive for what it was, but believe me, it definitely filled me up. As for the rest of the menu, it stays with the sandwich theme. There is a reuben, a turkey bacon melt, a breaded chicken sandwich, egg salad, tuna salad and grilled cheese to name a few. Outside of the sandwich realm, Crown Candy offers chili, chili dogs and tamales, among a few other hotfood options. The majority of their arsenal revolves around their famous candy. They also have world famous sundaes that will have your mouth watering upon hearing about them, like the fire chief special, consisting of two scoops of ice cream covered with chocolate sauce, strawberries, sliced bananas, pecans, crushed nuts, a mound of whip cream and topped with a cherry. It's just a great place to check out on a nice afternoon with your family, or a group of friends just looking for something relaxing to do. Be prepared to wait if you want to check out Crown Candy though. I met some out of towners from Minnesota who were there simply because they'd seen it on Man vs. Food, so Crown Candy's popularity spreads far and wide. I know it's tough standing in line when you gotta eat, but Crown Candy Kitchen is worth the wait.

Latin Grammy winner Pitbull, whose single "Timber" just recently became his second number one hit in the United States, will perform Saturday, Aug. 9.  Tickets for the show, which range in price from $40 for a Tier 3 Grandstand seat to $65 for a VIPit track ticket in front of the stage, will go on sale Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.  The cast of Million Dollar Quartet will give a free concert Monday, Aug. 11.  The hit musical is currently running at the Apollo Theater in Chicago and Harrah's Showroom in Las Vegas and was inspired by the famed, 1956 recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.  "This year's entertainment is going to be something you don't want to miss," State Fair Manager Amy Bliefnick said.  "From the first night to the last, the acts are topnotch.  I'm looking forward to great shows and memorable performances." The 2014 Grandstand concert

series opens Friday, Aug. 8 when the American Idol Live! Tour rolls into Springfield.  The tour will give fans of the hit TV series a chance to see the top ten finalists from the current season, including C.J. Harris, Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, MK Nobilette, Alex Preston, Dexter Roberts, Majesty Rose, Malaya Watson and Sam Woolf. Florida Georgia Line will perform Sunday, Aug. 10, the day after the Pitbull concert.  The vocal duo has rocketed to stardom since the first four singles from its platinum-selling debut album, "Here's to the Good Times," shot to number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, including "Cruise," the best-selling digital country song of all-time and the Country Music Association's 2013 "Single of the Year." Tuesday, Aug. 12, will feature a "triple bill" of classic rock.  Headlining the show will be 70s supergroup Boston, whose hits, including "More Than A Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Long Time," "Don't Look Back" and "Amanda," remain a staple of classic rock radio today.  Joining Boston will be the Canadian rock group April Wine, which has released more than 20 albums and performed together for more than 40 years, and Sweet, a British glam band best known for songs such as "Ballroom Blitz" and "Little Willy."  Singer and songwriter Hunter Hayes, the youngest, solo, male act ever to reach the top of the Hot Country Songs chart, will take the Grandstand stage for a concert Wednesday, Aug. 13.  Hayes already has six hit singles to his credit, including "Wanted," which reached number one just after his 21st birthday in September of 2012.  Friday, Aug. 15, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steely Dan will perform.  The duo released a string of

hit songs in the 1970s, including such classic rock staples as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Do It Again," "Hey Nineteen," "Reelin' In the Years" and  "Deacon Blues."  Country singer Jake Owen, the 2012 American Country Awards "Breakthrough Artist of the Year," is the featured entertainment Saturday, Aug. 16.  Owen already has nine Top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart to his credit, including the number one smash hits "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" and "Alone with You." Performers have yet to be booked for Thursday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 17. In addition to Pitbull, fairgoers also can begin buying tickets May 3 for the Hunter Hayes and Steely Dan concerts.  They will be available online at http://www. ticketmaster.com/, by phone at (800) 745-3000, or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets for the American Idol Live! Tour can be purchased the following Saturday, May 10.  Tickets for the other announced acts already are on sale. The new concert bookings were announced during a preview party on the fairgrounds to begin the countdown to the fair.  The event also included the unveiling of the 2014 Illinois State Fair theme, "Making Memories." "For many Illinoisans a trip to the fair has become a family tradition, an annual pilgrimage to celebrate our state's people, culture and heritage," Agriculture Director Bob Flider said.  "And the life-long memories of those visits have kept families coming back for generations.  I invite your family to make memories of its own when this

tradition known as the Illinois State Fair is renewed Aug. 7-17." For more information about the Grandstand entertainment line-up, visit the fair's website at http:// www.illiniosstatefair.info/ or call (217) 782-1979.

O'Jays to perform at The Fox Fox Concerts presents The O'Jays and Chaka Kahn on Friday, June 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $125, $90, $75, $65, $55, $45 and are on sale online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. The O'Jays are living legends… American treasures.   The term "living legend" is often overused and abused, but with The O'Jays, well, there's little argument that the honorable tag truly applies. With their place in modern music secure, The O'Jays could have cruise-controlled to that comfy hammock on a sandy beach, umbrella-decorated drinks in hand. Why? (1) An ocean-wide body of work that spawned 24 Top Ten smashes and 59 total charted songs. (2) Incredibly energetic and dynamic live shows. (3) Mad respect for their Olympian vocals. And (4) their social and political impact on generations and nations. But doing things slowly is not Eddie Levert, Sr., Walter Williams, Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant’s modus operandi. After 40+ years making such international hits as "Back Stabbers," "For The Love Of Money," "Darlin' Darlin' Baby," "Love Train," "I Love Music," "Use Ta Be My Girl" and "Have You Had Your Love Today,". There have been “four faces” of The O’Jays. This vocal group from

Canton, Ohio originated with Eddie Levert, SR., Walter Williams, SR., William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles and they were named after Cleveland DJ Eddie O’Jay. Isles left the group in 1965. Massey left to become a record producer in 1971 and Levert, Williams and Powell continues as a trio. Powell retired from touring due to illness in late 1975, passing at the age of 35 in 1977 and was replaced by Sammy Strain, formerly with Little Anthony & The Imperials. Strain returned to his former group in 1993 and was replaced by Nathaniel Best. After the departure in 1995 of Nathaniel Best, Eddie Levert, SR. and Walter Williams, SR. reached out to Eric Nolan Grant, a gifted vocalist who was already a part of the group’s extended Cleveland-based musical family. Their chart-topping album “Love You To Tears” marked Grant’s first appearance with the group. Chaka Khan is one of the world's most gifted and celebrated musicians, with a rich musical legacy, the 10-time Grammy Award-winner is looking forward to a celebration of a lifetime. A songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist, Chaka Khan has influenced generations of recording artists. She has the rare ability to sing in seven music genres, including R&B, pop, rock, gospel, country, world music and classical. Affectionately known around the world as Chaka, she is revered by millions of fans as well as her peers for her timeless, classic and unmatched signature music style and ability. The late, great Miles Davis often said, "She [Chaka] sings like my horn." And the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin says, "[Chaka] is a one- of- a -kind, premier vocalist."

Church to appear in St. Louis Eric Church’s The Outsiders World Tour will launch in North America on September 11, 2014 with 31 arena dates being announced today. Tickets for the tour are on sale with additional information made available on EricChurch. com. Members of the Church Choir will have access to a pre-sale starting on April 15. Church selected Dwight Yoakam as the special guest for the entire tour. Opening the tour on different dates throughout the first leg will be rising country music duo Brothers Osborne, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Brandy Clark, or the hard rocking band Halestorm. Hailed as a top entertainer by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN Magazine, and more, Church will bring his rip-roaring attitude when he performs at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Atlanta, Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, and FedExForum in Memphis, among others. Church will also return to the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. where he sold more than 15,000 tickets in 2012 as part of his headlining arena tour, The Blood, Sweat & Beers Tour—which Pollstar named a Top Tour of 2012. While The Blood, Sweat & Beers Tour employed a succession of backdrops as the focus of the show, Church's The Outsiders World Tour will use a much more high tech design and will offer fans a 360° view of the entertainer and his band. Church will perform at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Sept. 13. On sale dates and ticket information for each market will be announced on EricChurch.com. The best seats on The Outsiders World Tour will once again be paperless so fans get them instead of scalpers. A limited number of VIP tickets for each show will also be available for purchase. Each VIP ticket includes a premium ticket in the first 15 rows or in the general admission pit, an invitation to a preshow party at The Outsiders Joint, a two song acoustic pre-show performance by Eric Church, a limited edition show poster, and a dedicated VIP concert concierge. Fans have the chance to gain access to pre-sale tickets for each show by becoming a Standard or Premium member of the Church Choir. Join the Church Choir by

visiting http://smarturl.it/churchchoir.  Church’s current album, The Outsiders, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and the Billboard Country Albums Chart earlier this year, and his current hit single “Give Me Back My Hometown,” is Top 5-and-rising. “Eric Church is working on a level that few other country artists of his generation can touch,” said Ken Tucker at NPR Music in his review of the album, continuing, “Shrewd, defiant, sly and funny, Eric Church has succeeded in what he set out to do: He’s using the power he’s accrued from making hit records to make exactly the kind of album he wants, heedless of industry approv-

We

al. And this is how good he is: Now he’ll go out and — through the singles he’ll release, the touring he’ll do and the videos he’ll make — probably turn this personal project into a big commercial deal. The Outsiders deserves nothing less.” The Outsiders is the follow-up to Church’s Platinum-certified album Chief, (named the 2012 Album of the Year by both CMA and ACM, and GRAMMY-nominated for Best Country Album) which featured five Top 20 singles: “Homeboy” (certified Platinum for sales in excess of one million singles); the Top 10 “Like Jesus Does” and the Top 5 “Creepin’” (both certified Gold for sales in excess of 500,000 singles each); and two No. 1 hits “Drink

in My Hand” (certified Platinum) and “Springsteen” (certified Double Platinum for sales in excess of two million singles).  Church’s debut album, Sinners Like Me (2006) and his sophomore album Carolina (2009) are both RIAA Gold-certified. Carolina had three hit singles: the Top 10 “Hell on the Heart” as well as Top 20 hit “Smoke A Little Smoke” and Top 10 smash “Love Your Love The Most,” which were both certified Gold.  Sinners Like Me spawned three Top 20 singles: “How ‘Bout You,” “Two Pink Lines,” and “Guys Like Me.” Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, placing him in an elite group of global superstars. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s

singles have charted, with 14 peaking in the Top 10, including the hits “Honky Tonk Man,” “Please, Please Baby,” “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” and “Fast as You.” He is a 21-time nominated, 2-time GRAMMY Award winner. In celebration of his latest critically acclaimed album, 3 Pears, he received the Artist of the Year award at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony, the most prestigious award offered by the organization. In 2014, Yoakam will appear as a recurring guest star in multiple episodes of the thrilling CBS series, “Under the Dome,” based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel of the same name.
