Missouri Botanical Garden
Pictured are two cacti at the Missouri Botanical Garden.
MoBOT to host cactus sale For the Intelligencer The annual Henry Shaw Cactus and Succulent Society Plant Show and Sale will celebrate their 74th year by offering thousands of unusual as well as standard specimens of cacti and succulents on June 25 and 26. Cacti and succulents of all sizes and shapes will be available for viewing and purchase. Choose from thousands of plants appealing to varied tastes and experience levels, with pricing starting at $1.50. The cactus society’s two-day show will be located in the Ridgway Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Members will be on hand to offer plant information care sheets and to answer questions from novice as well as more experienced growers. The Henry Shaw Cactus and Succulent Society (HSCSS) show and sale admission is included with admission to the garden. Bring the entire family and stop by the Kid’s Corner where children 12 and under will be encouraged to examine and take home fingerfriendly succulents. HSCSS members will bring their best plants to the show for judging in over 150 categories, which include classes for specimen and decorative entries as well as allied interests. Visitors can see the prize winners with other entries and the sale plants when the show and sale opens June 25. Those attending the show and sale on Saturday, June 25 are invited to register to win a show-quality succulent as an attendance prize. The winner must pick up the prize before noon on Sunday, June 26. “People come from all across the country to attend this show and sale because it offers so many varieties of cacti and succulents in one place that are often not readily available to see or purchase" said Henry Shaw Cactus and Succulent Society Publicity Chairman Lillian Giessow. The society has a long history with the garden and has held meetings at the Missouri Botanical Garden for more than 70 years. In 1942, Ladislaus Cutak called a meeting at the Missouri Botanical Garden for the express purpose of organizing a cactus club. Although only 12 people attended that first meeting, their early efforts steadily evolved into an active, modern Henry Shaw Cactus and
Succulent Society with over 100 members today. Consider joining the Henry Shaw Cactus and Succulent Society, an affiliate chapter of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America. Meetings highlight guest speakers presenting various programs of interest to succulent hobbyists. Hands-on workshops on pruning, potting and dividing are held throughout the year. Members are encouraged to bring in plants to show off and share their cultivation secrets. Those who join during the show will receive a discount on select purchases, along with monthly newsletters and many other benefits.
For more information, visit www.hscactus. org/SHOW or contact HSCSS President Mike Hellmann at 618-444-7860. The show and sale are included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $8 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on most Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Missouri Botanical Garden members are free. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and

The HealthWorks! Kids' Museum's 55-foot-long Interactive Dude teaches children about health while making it fun.

T
he region’s first-ever children’s museum solely dedicated to health education has opened its doors to deliver a unique form of ‘edutainment’ designed to give children, and families, the passion to lead healthy lives. Debuting as HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis, the $2.5 million facility boasts 12,000 square feet of hands-on, interactive exhibit and programming space that is accessible to those of all abilities.
HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is located at 1100 Macklind Ave, near the Saint Louis Science Center. Admission is $7 per person and free for those 2 years-old and younger. Parking is free. “It is time to infectiously contaminate children of all ages to learn, have fun and make great life choices,” commented Shannon Woodcock, president and CEO of HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. “We will be working on the rapid spread of healthy life habits, and couldn’t be more excited to open our doors and begin infecting the countless individuals we expect to welcome to our facility in the years to come. Let’s let this epidemic begin!” HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is anchored by a 55-foot long, 25-foot wide, 8-foot tall human skeletal structure that serves as the first universally accessible indoor playground. This “Interactive Dude” features a leg slide; a bone balance beam; an electronic, memory-style healthy eating game that is attached to the digestive track; an all-bout

poop panel that passes gas; the ability to go inside a skull and learn about the different parts of the brain and their functions; and more. Visiting children can also take a virtual 10-minute, 4D tour through the mouth, following an apple’s trip through the digestive system in The Mouth Theatre, which includes a bubble experience. The Face Your Future exhibit gives children a glimpse into the future using age progression software that showcases what each child could look like based on life choices tied to tobacco usage, sun health and food consumption. There is also a mock medical office, dentist office, pharmacy and Farmer’s Market with tools, technology and dress-up stations to help kids transform themselves into mini-healthcare professionals or play the patient or customer. There is also an All About Me data collection station; a fully-functioning kitchen for cooking demonstrations and educational series, and an immersive play space using Beam (previously EyePlay) technology to host interactive floor games. The Delta Dental Health Theatre, which was a popular fixture on Laclede’s Landing for the last 38 years, is also housed in HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. It serves as an interactive learning center with unique, high-energy, educator-led programming that will increase individual knowledge about the connection between personal choices and health outcomes, encourage positive health practices and turns visitors into health advocates for themselves, their families and this community. The widelypopular, world’s largest fiberglass teeth will also be on display for kids to interact with in a

whole new way. The general contractor for this landmark project was ISC Contracting, with the exhibit design work completed by Qualified Services, Inc. Cre8play is the company that designed and fabricated the “Interactive Dude.” HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis became a reality thanks to a capital campaign that got underway in the spring of 2015 with the goal of raising $2.5 million for this project. To date, more than $1.5 million has been secured, thanks, in large part, to an $850,000 contribution by long-time supporter Delta Dental of Missouri. The state’s leading dental benefits company is deeply committed, in principle and in practice, to advancing oral health and overall health for individuals, children and families in the communities it serves. Other key financial supporters include members of the Delta Dental Health Theatre’s Board of Directors and staff, St. Louis Office for Developmental Disability Resources, The Smile Generation, The Little Medical School, Dana Brown Charitable Trust, Jefferson Memorial Community Foundation, theTrio Foundation of St. Louis and IKEA. This project is also coming to fruition through a partnership with the Saint Louis Science Center and collaborations with several regional healthcare and business organizations. The building housing the new museum is owned by the Saint Louis Science Center Foundation, which has entered into a long-term lease agreement with HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. Naming rights for the “Interactive Dude” and other key attractions within the museum remain, providing an exceptional opportunity for a local organization to
step up and be directly associated with the region’s most innovative new entertainment venue. Area residents and businesses can also support this effort by becoming a Founding Member of Healthworks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis for only $250 and available for a limited time only. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis has the capacity to reach up to 150,000 children annually. It will be open every Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays. Discounted admission pricing is given for field trips, and other groups of 10 and more. Reservations can be made at (314) 241-7391. To learn about HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis, call (314) 241-7391, visit www.hwstl.org find the organization on Facebook or follow them on Twitter using the handle @youcantoucan. HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis came into existence as a result of efforts to expand The Delta Dental Health Theatre to address broader, overall health issues after Delta Dental of Missouri became a major corporate sponsor in 2004. Those plans evolved and grew more ambitious over the next several years, ultimately leading to the closure of the original theatre on Laclede’s Landing in downtown St. Louis after 38 years so it could be housed in the new, dramatically expanded museum. The Delta Dental Health Theatre was originally organized as a program under the Foundation of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society in 1977. In 2002, it was incorporated as an independent 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization.

Youngsters take part in St. Louis' Slide the City event in 2015.
For The Edge Oakland Avenue will be transformed into the biggest block party of the summer when Slide the City arrives on July 9. Families and friends alike can slip and splash down the giant water slide while onlookers enjoy the surrounding block party. Event organizers expect this year to be their best yet. “This unique event was a success last year, but for 2016 we are adding some fun entertainment to give it more of a community feel,” said John Malfatto, Slide the City co-owner. “You can experience your hometown like never before!”
Last summer, the massive slide made its first Saint Louis appearance when almost 8,000 adventure-seekers sped down three city blocks on inner tubes. This year, event organizers have chosen a new street to ensure a smoother and speedier ride for and implemented waves for shorter wait times. “We can’t wait to come back to Saint Louis,” said Slide the City spokeswoman Amy Gessel. “We are excited about the wave times implemented this year. They will allow participants to slide without the wait while giving them time to experience the block party.” Event organizers have also added street
entertainers, music, local vendors and more to create the block party around the slide itself. Then, when families, friends and neighbors want to take a break from the heat, they can ride the one-of-a-kind urban slide. Sliding starts at 9 a.m. Online registration opens Wednesday April 20 at http:// www.slidethecity.com/location/st-louis/ Participants can purchase a single, triple or ultimate slider pass during a selected wave time and are encouraged to sign up before May 6 to take advantage of the current rate. Pricing starts at $10. All those over 5 years of age and 46 inches tall are welcome to slide! Visit the Slide the
City Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/slidethecity/ to see what fans have to say. About Slide the City The first event of its kind, Slide the City has seen massive growth since its beginnings in 2014. The 2015 summer tour stopped in over seventy cities around the world, and this year Slide the City is on track to produce more than 100 events. The family-friendly company brings its massive slides to locations from coast-to-coast. With music, local vendors, activities and more, city streets are transformed into the biggest block party of the summer.

Religion briefs Family considers suit Another challenge as Citadel rejects filed to Mississippi hijab gay marriage law CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A spokesman for the family of a newly-accepted Muslim student at the Citadel military school in South Carolina says the prospective cadet is disappointed that the school has rejected her request to wear a head covering as part of her uniform. Ibrahim Hooper with the Council on American-Islamic Relations says he spoke with the family Tuesday after Citadel officials called to tell the woman she could not wear a hijab. Citadel President John Rosa said the cadet system is based on a common uniform and s t a n d a rd i z a t i o n o f c a d e t s i n appearance, actions and privileges, which he called essential to a military system. He added that the college recognizes the importance of the spiritual and religious beliefs of cadets and makes accommodations for prayer and dietary needs. Hooper said the woman will not attend the Charleston school this fall unless there is a change. He also said the family is considering legal options.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Another group is challenging a Mississippi law that will let workers cite their own religious objections to same-sex marriage to deny services to people. Campaign for Southern Equality and two lesbian couples filed papers Tuesday to reopen their 2014 federal lawsuit that overturned Mississippi's definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman. Their filing comes a day after a gay couple and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a

Gay man settles with Catholic school that pulled job offer
girls Catholic high school was rescinded after administrators learned that he was in a samesex marriage has settled a lawsuit with the school. The Boston Globe reports that 45-year-old Matthew Barrett's settlement with Fontbonne Academy comes nearly five months after a Massachusetts judge found the Milton school had discriminated against Barrett. Fontbonne officials pulled their offer of a food service position to Barrett in 2013
after he listed his husband as an emergency contact. Barrett's attorney says the settlement means that the December Superior Court ruling against the school will stand, establishing a legal precedent that employers have no religious justification for discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation. Fontbonne Academy released a statement saying it "expresses deep gratitude to Mr. Barrett for his willingness to come together with us in a spirit of conciliation."

"The Family Fang"
Family dysfunction takes on new meaning in "The Family Fang," a film about a pair of performance artists for whom everything in life is part of the act, and the effects this existence has on their two children. The elegantly structured adaptation of Kevin Wilson's best-selling novel opens in a scene from the past. In the family car, parents Caleb (Jason Butler Harner) and Camille (Kathryn Hahn) are preparing their adolescent children Annie (Mackenzie Brooke Smith) and Baxter (Jack McCarthy) for something. Caleb is dressed as a police officer and Baxter, at probably five, is asking if he can taste the fake blood again. Suddenly we're in a bank, where Baxter is staging a hold up for the teller's lollipop jar with a gun. There's a shooting, there are tears, and then there's laughter as the family breaks the ruse. Surrounding pedestrians look on in horror at the bizarre, terrifying scene. The Fangs are just in their own world enjoying themselves and relishing in the chaos that they've created. As is to be expected, the future is not as carefree. Now grown, Annie (Nicole Kidman) is a famous actress with a wild reputation who has gotten less interesting with sobriety. The once indie darling is now best known for a string of lousy rom coms and is trying to stage a comeback. Baxter (Jason Bateman, who also directed), is a novelist who had one great breakout, a middling follow-up and is now two years late on his next. An accident and a hospital stint brings the siblings back together again, and back with their parents (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett), who they escaped long ago. The accidental reunion is at turns fraught and comforting, but things turn sour and volatile when the adult kids refuse to participate in another stunt with their too-eager parents. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some language." RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Mother's Day"
What would it take to make you fall off the upstairs balcony at your house in the middle of the day? Could you imagine being so intoxicated by your own karaoke performance of "The Humpty Dance" that it sends you a-tumbling? This is one of a series of ridiculously farfetched events that make up "Mother's Day," the third and worst installment in veteran director Garry Marshall's trio of starry ensemble holiday rom-coms. Even if stars Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson are mom's all-time favorites, don't subject her to this cloying, plotless dose of saccharine unless she's done you wrong. The bloopers that play amid the closing credits – one in which Aniston un-hilariously calls Roberts by her real name instead of her character's – are some of the funniest moments in the film. Like "Valentine's Day" and "New Year's Eve" before it, "Mother's Day" introduces various characters whose stories intertwine as they prepare for the title holiday. And, like its predecessors, this latest Marshall romp boasts an extensive allstar cast, including Hector Elizondo, Margo Martindale, Jason Sudeikis, Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Garner. We meet everyone a week before Mother's Day, as family drama reigns. Sandy (Aniston) is dealing with the fact that her two sons might spend Mother's Day with her ex-husband, Henry (Olyphant), whose much younger new wife wants to bond with them. Sandy's friend Jesse (Hudson) is happy with her husband and their toddler – it's her own racist mother (Martindale) who's the problem. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

On the Edge of the Weekend
"Captain America: Civil War"
Conventional movie wisdom would suggest that there can only be diminishing returns with long-running franchises. There must be a breaking point, right? Especially at movie four, five, six and beyond. There are exceptions, sure, but even the painstakingly plotted Marvel films have had low points. And yet in the ashes of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the brain trust behind Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have built what is easily one of the strongest films of their so-called cinematic universe with "Captain America: Civil War," an engaging, lively and just flat out fun use of the characters we've gotten to know across the last eight years and 12 films. As our interest waned in the prospect of yet another supervillain threatening to destroy an entire city or planet, Marvel smartly pivoted and turned the conflict inward. With the near inevitability of a civilian death toll any time the Avengers are involved in an incident, the UN steps in with an accord proposing regulation and oversight. Essentially now, the Avengers need permission before they jump into action. Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is for it. Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) is against it. And the rest of the Avengers must decide where they side, leading to some interesting alliances — like Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) going against her pal Cap, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) positioning against his friend Black Widow, and so on. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem." RUNNING TIME: 147 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"A Bigger Splash"
A craggy, stormy volcanic island off Sicily. Some fabulous real estate. A little food porn. Tilda Swinton's face, and Ralph Fiennes' — well, a lot more than his face. What more could a film buff want? To be fair, "A Bigger Splash," by director Luca Guadagnino, has an uneven feel. For 90 minutes it floats along as a relaxed exploration of four quirky characters — attractive, lustful, bored, somewhat confused — and the shifting ties that bind them, carnally and otherwise. Then, suddenly and shockingly, it turns into a psychological thriller for the last half hour. It's a shift in tone that feels uneasy and a little forced. But by then, you've been lulled into a second-glass-of-wine feeling — perhaps a result of watching those lazy, al fresco meals overlooking the sea. Your defenses are down, and you're ready to flow with it until the end, even though you have a feeling you're going to be left a little unsatisfied. The setting is the Sicilian island of Pantelleria near Tunisia, where Marianne (Swinton) and her boyfriend of six years, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are staying in a sprawling home atop rocky cliffs, with a nice swimming pool (the film is a reworking of the French New Wave classic "La Piscine," which should give aforementioned film buffs a sense of where things are headed). Marianne is a rock star not unlike David Bowie — a role that fits the pale, androgynous, chameleon-like Swinton to a T — who is recovering from vocal cord surgery and not allowed to speak. This means that for most of the film, Swinton lacks one of an actor's chief instruments: the voice. This challenge also suits Swinton to a T; in fact, it was her own idea to render Marianne virtually speechless, jettisoning dialogue originally planned for her. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for graphic nudity, some strong sexual content, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: hree stars out of four.

"The Lobster"
Does anything break through the glum satire and unremitting deadpan that cover "The Lobster" like the gray Irish skies that hover over it? Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos' first English-language film begins with a distraught woman driving through the rain. She gets out on a remote plain, walks up to a donkey and shoots it right in the face. It's a brutal announcement of the absurdity to come. This is a film for neither lovers nor animal lovers. In "The Lobster," a "Saturday Night Live" sketch carried out with the severity of Antonioni, singlehood is outlawed. The lonely and divorced are rounded up in white vans and brought to a country resort where they have 45 days to meet a mate or they will then be turned into an animal of their choosing. The questions at check-in go like this: "Have you ever been on your own before? Are you allergic to any foods?" Rules include that volleyball and tennis courts are reserved for couples only, and that crossbreeding species — a wolf and a penguin, a camel and a hippo — isn't allowed. "That would be absurd," says the hotel manager (Olivia Colman). The style here is at once gleefully bonkers and grimly banal. Though "The Lobster" has been called a dystopia, there are no fantastical elements besides its extreme conceit, a savage parody of our coupling obsession. At the hotel, people pair off based on only the most superficial commonalities like robotic Tinder users. John C. Reilly is identified only as the Lisping Man; Ben Wishaw as the Limping Man. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content including dialogue, and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

It was the comedy, not the romance, in Jane Austen's work that drew writer-director Whit Stillman to her unfinished novella "Lady Susan." Stillman spent years adapting the collection of letters into "Love & Friendship," a talky tale centered on the manipulative, self-serving ways of an attractive young widow. Romance is but a trifle for Lady Susan Vernon, considered "the most accomplished flirt in all England," and her callousness breeds comedy, briskly delivered here in stylized language. The wit comes so quickly, the film demands a second viewing. The heartlessness of the central character, though, makes that option unappealing. It's a testament to the performance, writing and direction, and she should be so odious, but sometimes hanging out with a sociopath can be a drag. "Love & Friendship" (the title borrowed from a different Austen story) reunites the stars of Stillman's 1998 film, "The Last Days of Disco." Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny again play friends obsessed with relationships and reputation, except this story takes place at least 100 years earlier (Austen's novella was set in 1790). Sevigny is Alicia Johnson, the only remaining friend of the elegant, unscrupulous Lady Susan, played by Beckinsale, commanding and effortless in every scene. In opulent costumes by Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh and a mountainous tumble of curls, Beckinsale's Lady Susan is immaculate in her appearance and delivery of Stillman's wellcrafted prose. She leads an ensemble cast that includes Jemma Redgrave, Tom Bennett, Xavier Samuel, Morfydd Clark and Stephen Fry. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements." RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

This image released by A24 Films shows Colin Farrell in a scene from, "The Lobster."
"The Lobster" skewers marriage By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Does anything break through the glum satire and unremitting deadpan that cover "The Lobster" like the gray Irish skies that hover over it? Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos' first English-language film begins with a distraught woman driving through the rain. She gets out on a remote plain, walks up to a donkey and shoots it right in the face. It's a brutal announcement of the absurdity to come. This is a film for neither lovers nor animal lovers. In "The Lobster," a "Saturday Night Live" sketch carried out with the severity of Antonioni, singlehood is outlawed. The lonely and divorced are rounded up in white vans
and brought to a country resort where they have 45 days to meet a mate or they will then be turned into an animal of their choosing. At the hotel, people pair off based on only the most superficial commonalities like robotic
Tinder users. John C. Reilly is identified only as the Lisping Man; Ben Wishaw as the Limping Man. They seek others with the same characteristic. When the Limping Man meets a woman who suffers from nosebleeds, he takes to smacking his head against tables. Successful couples speak of vacations together — the ultimate prize for a "happy" couple — with awe-inspiring pride. In between awkward courtships and punitive tactics (masturbation is punished by putting the perpetrator's hand in a toaster) are hunting excursions into the woods to shoot "loners." David (Colin Farrell) is brought to the hotel after his wife leaves him. Lanthimos has drained away almost all of Farrell's charisma (he's here a little heavier, with glasses and a mustache) leaving just his fragility. Should he
fail, he chooses a lobster, he explains, because they will live over 100 years, are blue-blooded "like aristocrats" and stay fertile all their lives. "I also like the sea very much," he says. If all of this didn't yet sound strange enough, there's also an arch, literary narration (Rachel Weisz, who turns up later) and heavy jabs of Beethoven and Shostakovich throughout. When David finds a band of rebel loners hiding out in the woods, they turn out to be no less militaristic. In "The Lobster," Lanthimos brings his unique blend of macabre and satire to love and marriage, just as he did to family in the Oscar-nominated "Dogtooth" and to death in "Alps." In the latter, a business's employees impersonate the dead to aid mourners in their grief.
Clooney can't save "Money Monster" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge If you were to count up the missteps that George Clooney has made in his professional career, you would find it to be a small list that nearly disappears as you become more and more contemporary. He has on-going disdain for the mullet hairstyle he wore in the ‘80s during his time on “The Facts of Life”, but he got over that pretty quickly to become a heartthrob with a Caesar cut on “ER” by the middle of the ‘90s. Transitioning to film was a gimme for Mr. Clooney and much of his work behind the camera has been as good as the stuff we see on-screen. “Money Monster”, new this week, gives me slight pause to keep counting the blessings even when the movie star is still feeling the upswing from his
recent wedding to the luminous Amal (an attorney who is both smarter and sexier than her husband). The movie definitely has its weak moments that bleed too closely together to win over a glowing review from this critic, despite a stellar cast where Clooney works alongside now frequent collaborator and friend Julia Roberts under the tutelage of Oscar winning actress-turned-Clooney’s been quick to point out that his character in this movie, Lee Gates, is now a riff on Jim Cramer. Maybe Jim Cramer and Jim Cramer’s wife take relief in that, but the rest of us can’t be expected to believe it’s true. Gates is a financial talk show host known for crazy on-air antics and noisy stunts used to help guide rookie investors in their choices of one maddening stock over another. Cramer is CNBC’s host of “Mad Money” where he’s been doing
pretty much the same thing since 1995. The premise may be rooted in reality, but the movie magic twist takes place one afternoon when Gates is interrupted mid-show by a dude with a bomb. Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell, the up-and-coming star of 2014’s “Unbroken”) is a struggling young kid who’d been bilked out of his entire savings when one of Gates’s tips went bust. Not only was the “lock” of an investment lost, the company that it was made into went belly-up overnight in a financial crisis that both defies belief and mocks our current tenuous situation with the market (i.e. that which is always going up, must soon come down). So unbelievable is it, in fact, that Kyle breaks into the live broadcast of Lee’s show to hold him at gunpoint and strap a suicide vest to the TV personality until his demands are met.
He wants to know why the company failed so dramatically and so quickly and where his money really is. This is the high point for me in enjoying this movie. Gate’s overcomes his panic through a little help from his long-suffering producer, Patty Fenn (Roberts) who guides him through his earwig from her perch in the Control Room. One gets the feeling that this is the type of role that Julia Roberts now likes playing after spending twenty years as the girl in romantic comedy blockbusters. I hardly blame her. Together, they piece together the mystery, deal with the cops, and pacify the network that is still airing the hostage act live in HD. So there’s a slow start to the movie. That’s unfortunate. It dips and rises periodically, but the ending is kind of a letdown, depending on your point of view. Once Kyle
May 26, 2016
takes Gates out of the studio and into streets of Manhattan, I was lost. The act might hinge together some of the story details, but it was destined to end violently for one or more of the characters. “Money Monster” to me just feels a little like a wasted opportunity to put together a pair of monster stars with a well-regarded director who used to also be a huge movie star. The third lead may one day be a great star, but “Money Monster” – which launched to third place box office numbers – is going to be forgotten and quickly. Terrorism and the stock market: don’t we hear enough about these things in the news every day already? “Money Monster” is runs 98 minutes and is rated R for language throughout, some sexuality, and brief violence. I give this film one star out of four.

Music
For The Edge
Scrap Iron & Gold will perform June 28 in the Coal Country Summer Concert Series.
Summer Concert Series set in Benld For The Edge The Coal Country Chamber of Commerce Twelfth Annual Summer Concert Series will bring music to our area again this year every Tuesday in June and July, beginning June 7 in Benld City Park. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are 90 minutes straight through. Beginning at 6 p.m. the park is open and the concession stand is open to serve hot dogs, “big smokies”, Italian beef, soda and water, and strawberry shortcake sundaes. The concerts, which bring crowds to the covered pavilion on the South side of the Benld City Park and the large expanse of lawn, are free to the public. Patrons regularly bring their own lawn chairs and enjoy the concerts rain or shine because we are under the pavilion. Parking is free and dancing is often enjoyed. This year’s lineup is: June 7—The Fundamentals (Pop/rock, Oldies, Motown, Classics) The Fundamentals present a blend of music that combines pop/rock oldies, rhythm & blues/Motown, party classics, and variety. Featuring veteran musicians and vocalists, the group can provide listening and dancing music for many different entertainment settings. Illinois and Missouri area music lovers may be familiar with Fundamentals members' other successful groups: Rusty Halo, the band for the 55 KUSA Roadshow w/Frank O’Pinion; or The Boomers, a dance/show band which performed at many corporate and private events in the St. Louis metro area and throughout Central Illinois. Featuring bassist Kevin Leitheiser and keyboardist Sandy Leitheiser, those groups have opened shows for B. J. Thomas, The Chi-Lites, The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Paul Robi Platters, and Bertie Higgins . Now joined by guitarist Rick Gasparin and drummer Gary Morris, The Fundamentals continue the tradition of quality performances. The Springfield, Illinois' weekly social/ entertainment newspaper, The Illinois Times, has selected The Fundamentals as their "IT" pick on eight different occasions. June 14—Dixie Dudes and Dance Band (40’s and 50’s Dixieland Style) The Dixie Dudes Dixieland Band commenced as an extension of the Lewis & Clark Community College Concert Band of Godfrey Illinois in 1985. The Dixieland Band, an eight piece ensemble, became so popular
that it soon had requests to play at many functions. The band’s first engagement was for the opening of the new Amtrak Railroad Station in Alton, IL. Since then the band has performed for conventions, college concerts, restaurants, retirement centers, Church functions, Marti Gras celebrations, Christmas parties, birthday parties and many other occasions. The music is authentic traditional Dixieland as played in New Orleans. The band members are a mix of amateur and professional musicians who play for fun and recreation. The players include two teachers, a politician, two engineers, a pilot, and two doctors. The music will lift the spirit, lighten the heart, and start the foot tapping. Most recently the Dixie Dudes have expanded into rock n roll tunes and dance tunes to play for weddings and other party occasions. Recent engagements include dances at the VFW and Lodge of the Eagles in Alton. The band is constantly adding new tunes. Recent additions, two Latin tunes, “Sway”, “Oye Coma Va”, a Swing tune “Tuxedo Junction” and Dixieland tune, “Muskrat Ramble” June 21—The SteamRollers (Blues, Country, Folk) The Steamroller Band is a St. Louis, MO Classic Rock and Blues band. It is well known in the Metro-East area as well. The band members (Julie Blank - keyboards and vocals, Greg Blank - Bass and Vocals, Chris Letrello - Drums and Vocals, and Rich Kasznel - Guitar and Vocals) have years (decades!) of experience playing in the St. Louis area. The band has created a unique mix of music and with excellent sound control - and volume control! - providing an ideal musical event for any venue. In the style of casual back porch jamming, the band brings to life tunes such as “I’ll Fly Away;” “Daddy Sang Bass”; and “Wagon Wheel,” Foot stomping banjo tunes such as “Foggy Mountain
Breakdown”and fiddle instrumentals such as “Old Joe Clark” are scattered throughout the performances. Favorite civil war tunes are played along with patriotic and many old time Gospel favorites. In many concerts, guest performers are included. July 5—River Ramblers (Original Bluegrass) The River Ramblers are a five piece Bluegrass band that hails from areas surrounding Springfield IL. The group assembled in 1987 with the commitment to maintaining the traditional bluegrass sound. If you’re familiar with the music of Bluegrass icons such as Monroe, Stanley, Flatt & Scruggs, you will recognize nearly every tune this band performs. To date, the group has issued three recordings which include mostly traditional songs combined with some original tunes. Band members are Don Randle, bassist and banjo player; Jennifer Ramm, vocalist and host of a PBS Bluegrass show; Mike Smith, banjoist; Marc Bourne, on guitar and vocal; and founder Duane Patterson, promoter, lead vocalist, mandolin player and emcee. Duane and the River Ramblers are typically known for their entertaining style on stage as the lively music is combined with an acute degree of personal character. They are sure to keep your attention even if you’re not familiar with this style of music. The group attributes their longevity to enjoying the music and the camaraderie of their fellow musicians. July 12—B & B Strings (Acoustic Trio of Classic Rock & Country) A local favorite, B&B Strings is an acoustic trio based in Litchfield and Hillsboro IL with musicians Rodney Lingo, Bob Smith and Roy Rubenstein. B&B Strings began as a duo starting in 2009 with Roy joining in early 2012. Rodney joined the trio in 2016 as the new lead guitarist and vocalist. B&B Strings is a dynamic trio consisting of two acoustic guitars and a bass guitar. All three members sing and compliment vocal harmonies. They play a wide variety of music, from classic rock to country classics that are popular and recognizable, always working within acoustic harmony arrangements. July 19---Fireproof (Contemporary Christian Pop) Fireproof UMC was formed at an annual planning meeting of the United Methodist Church of Gillespie in 2012. A praise band ministry was one of the topics discussed, and on the hearts of musicians in the church.

Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, the Carolina Bison Burger at Bailey's Range Burgers & Shakes in St. Louis. Below, the Sweet Sweet Bacon cocktail.
Bailey's Range in St. Louis By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge With a modern burger menu and a topnotch ice cream parlor, Baileys' Range Burgers & Shakes in downtown St. Louis has it all. Located at 920 Olive Blvd. in St. Louis, Baileys' Range is part of Baileys' Restaurants, which also includes Baileys' Chocolate Bar and Rooster among others. Kelly and I visited prior to a Cardinals' Saturday day game recently and it was packed. We had to take a spot at the long bar that runs along the front of the restaurant on the first floor. There was also a long wooden table in the middle of the ground floor for patrons to sit. It's a very social setup. The layout is interesting. There is also a second floor with smaller tables and it's open so visitors can look down over the ground floor. A cool touch are the old window panes that hang from the ceiling next to the banquet table and in front of the open kitchen on the ground floor. The acoustics do get quite loud. It's definitely a fun atmosphere for large groups. But enough about the aesthetics, because the No. 1 aesthetic when you visit a restaurant is obviously the food and Baileys' Range has that locked down. Kelly had been there once before, so she gave me the rundown of some of the things to try. We started with their intriguing drink menu. Baileys' Range likes to get a little creative with their drinks. They have great soda and craft beer selections, but we decided to hit up the even more creative boozy drinks available. Kelly went with the cherry limeade, while I went with an instant classic — the Sweet Sweet Bacon. The cherry limeade consisted of Tito's vodka, cherry nectar and Jarritos lime soda. I swiped a swig and it was very good. Kelly was more than satisfied, but it didn't hold a candle to my curious cocktail. Now I never shy away from my consummate love affair with bacon. I've eaten a plethora of bacon-themed food in my day, but bacon drinks are rarer, so to say I was giddy when I saw the Sweet Sweet Bacon on the boozy shakes and floats portion of the menu is an understatement. The Sweet Sweet Bacon is comprised of Four Roses bourbon and salted caramel ice cream and then the prized ingredient, candied bacon. When it arrived there was an enormous slice of bacon protruding straight out of my
24
shake. It was like Christmas in April. Once I took a big drink through the straw I got hit with the real star of this concoction, heavenly candied bacon crystals in every gulp. There was a fair amount of bourbon in it too, giving it a sensational boozy flavor. It was a trio of tastes, with bourbon, caramel and bacon in every swallow and it was super thick. To top it off I devoured the giant bacon slice at the end, sucking the ice cream sticking to it right off — sensational. Baileys' Range had already won me over and we still hadn't eaten any food. We started on the appetizer menu, going with the fried pickles. They arrived and were thick pickle slices with an even thicker breading on them and were accompanied by a mayo dipping sauce. The pickles were very good, but the sauce was a little too salty for my palate.
On the Edge of the Weekend

Next it was on to our main courses and it's certainly all about the burgers at Baileys' Range. I went with the Carolina Bison, while Kelly ordered the LGBT, but substituted the beef patty with their peppercorn crusted aged sirloin patty. Mine consisted of a bison patty topped with smoked pork shoulder, house barbecue sauce and cole slaw served on a beer bun. The gourmet burgers aren't overly large and I will start by applauding the beer bun, which had a nice fluffy texture and hearty taste. The bison was very lean and surprisingly the overwhelming flavor in my burger. If I had one complaint, it was that there wasn't much barbecue sauce on the sandwich. It still remained a very good burger. Kelly's on the other hand was a true classic. She blessed me with a minute morsel of her aged sirloin, but even with the tiny piece I got
the idea of the sensational flavor. Her whole burger included the peppercorn crusted aged sirloin, lettuce, goat cheese, bacon and tomato. The change to the aged sirloin pushed it over the top. She raved of its awesomeness. That was a nice touch for Baileys' Range. Our server informed us that you can substitute any type of meat or cheese available on your burger. It's all about the customer, which always makes for great service. Finally, we went with a large plate of french fries to share. Kelly wanted me to try them so I could check out the unique dipping sauces available. We went with the house catsup and the cheddar cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was very basic, but extremely gooey and good. The house catsup on the other hand was super intriguing. They added cinnamon to it, making it extremely unique and phenomenal. The fries themselves were good, seasoned and fairly thick cut. They weren't unique, but they were more than satisfying. There is plenty more on the Baileys' Range menu. Check it out at www.baileysrange.com. On the appetizer menu the warm pretzels served with beer cheese looked to be a good choice, as did the brisket chili. As for the burgers, there are a slew of great gourmet choices. The Dave's Chop House was intriguing, consisting of an aged sirloin patty, steak sauce, bacon jam, smoked gouda and rosemary cream cheese. There was also the Ballpark Pretzel that sounded good, comprised of a beef patty with bacon, house cheddar sauce, dijon and beer-battered onion rings served on a pretzel bun. Make sure to check out the burger battle on the menu. Every two weeks a pair of burgers square off in a battle. The one that gets more orders stays on the menu for the next fight, while the other gets kicked off. They are always unique and crazy recipes. Don't forget to peruse the ice cream menu there, too. There are plenty of good dessert choices on it if you still have room in your stomach. As far as cost, it can get a little pricey. My burger was $12, while the french fries and fried pickles were $5 each and the Sweet Bacon Bacon was $9 — of course the latter was worth every penny. So if you're looking to try some crazy cocktails, or you just want a good gourmet burger, Baileys' Range is a great place to visit when you gotta eat.
