Traveling with pets By KIM SALERNO TripsWithPets.com

A

road trip really is better when you have a furry friend beside you. However, many pet parents feel concerned about taking their pets along when they travel. One big reason is concern about finding pet friendly accommodations to stay along the way. Kim Salerno, President & Founder of TripsWithPets.com, has traveled extensively with her pets. She knows the ins and outs of finding a great hotel to accommodate everyone's needs, and she assures pet parents that it's easier than they might think. "I have found many gracious, accommodating pet friendly hotels, in every type and every price range," she affirms. Here are Kim's top choices, based on pet policies, fees, amenities and her overall personal experience. It's important to note that no matter where you go, hotels only welcome pets that are properly socialized and wellbehaved, and in places where they are not prohibited by law. Economy-Range Hotels Motel 6 It's iconic and - more importantly for pet travel - it's everywhere. "You can find a Motel 6 along every major highway in the U.S., Kim notes. "Not only is it a bargain and a convenient place to stay, it's a great choice for four legged friends." Pets of any size and breed - even multiple pets - are allowed to stay here at no extra charge. Red Roof Inn Any hotel with a motto like "You Stay Happy, Pets Stay Free" is going to mean great things for your pet. Red Roof Inn has 345 locations, and each one allows guests to bring one pet, at no extra charge. "This is a truly pet friendly place," asserts Kim. "They even have a fun Facebook page called Red Roof Luvs Pets." Moderate/Mid Range Hotels La Quinta Inns & Suites

La Quinta balances the best of two worlds: high-quality service and a high-end feel, at a reasonable, affordable price. La Quinta also expertly balances the needs of people and their pets. All of their locations allow guests to stay with up to two pets, with no fee and no breed or weight restrictions. Pets can even stay alone in your room, if they behave themselves. "I personally have stayed at La Quinta a number of times," notes Kim. "The staff members were always very welcoming, and there were always treats at the front desk." Candlewood Inn & Suites Candlewood endears itself to pet parents in many ways. "This is a great hotel for extended stays with pets," says Kim. "Every location allows multiple pets of up to 80 pounds each. There is a pet fee, but it's pretty reasonable. It goes by a sliding scale that depends on how long you stay." It's the little things that count, though: each location offers a designated dog relief area, complete with waste bags. Well-behaved pets are allowed to stay in rooms unattended. In addition, the hotel provides pet parents with a magnet to put on their doors, which lets the Candlewood staff know that that your pet is a guest in the room. Luxury Hotels: W Hotels This luxury hotel gives both humans and pets the royal treatment Their P.A.W., or Pets are Welcome program, delights four-legged guests with a welcome packet, which features toys, treats, a specialized W Hotels pet tag, waste bags, and a list of pet services offered by the hotel. Rooms that host pets provide them with a custom pet bed, food and water bowls, and tasty turndown treats made just for them. The hotel does have a $25 pet fee, and a nonrefundable $100 cleaning fee. However, Kim has personally found the added expense to be worth it. "If you really want to travel well, and you're going to pull out all the stops, the services this hotel provides are definitely worth the fees." Only one pet per room is allowed, and the hotel does insist on a 40-pound weight limit. Kimpton This hotel company really goes above and beyond to

accommodate every type of pet. In fact, Kimpton's motto is "if your pet fits through the door, we'll welcome them in." Kimpton has a range of boutique hotels in a wide variety of locations, and they have no restrictions on the breed, weight, or even type of pet that is welcome. "The staff at the Kimpton Firesky in Scottsdale told me that of one of their regular guests frequently visited with her pot-bellied pig," notes Kim. If you don't have a pet to bring along, but you wish you did, no worries -- the hotel will provide you with a pet fish in your room. Loews Hotels Loews Hotels is all about luxury, for people and their pets. Its Loews Loves Pets Program provides pets with welcome gifts, such as a name tag, a bowl, and tasty treats. The hotel will gladly walk your pet, petsit, or loan you a pet bed, or even a scratching post. Kim's favorite amenity? Room service. "They have a special doggie room service menu with vetapproved selections that my pets love," she says. "We enjoy relaxing and dining in together, especially during a hectic trip." Loews does have a limit of two pets per room, and pet fees begin at $25, and vary from hotel to hotel. People People planner MoBOT brings back Lantern Festival The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to an international exhibition of 22 lighted works of art from Zigong, China when it debuts “Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined in 2015. Following critical acclaim and rave reviews from visitors during the 2012 Festival, the Garden has commissioned new sets crafted from silk and steel to once again offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to see an event rarely staged outside of Asia. Lantern Festival will again be an outdoor, evening display running May 23 to August 23, 2015. “We were overwhelmed with the reaction our 2012 Lantern Festival received and for the last two years have heard from so many people asking if another festival would ever be held, said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “At the same time, we have continued our botanical research in China, and feel it is fitting to highlight the growing number of botanical gardens in that country as we celebrate the continued contributions the Missouri Botanical Garden makes in science on a global scale. Lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture, dating back thousands of years. Today, lantern festivals traditionally mark the Chinese New Year, when complex and ornate lanterns fill cities. The 22 sets that will be seen during Lantern Festival 2015 will be constructed using traditional materials including silk, wire and porcelain. Each set will include

interpretation detailing the design’s tradition, symbolism and meaning. Among the planned sets is “Soaring Dragon Horse, located in the Garden’s Central Axis, depicting a well-known symbol in Chinese culture, the dragon horse. The dragon horse is considered a spirit of Heaven and Earth and thought to bring good fortune. “Porcelain Stupas Pagoda will be constructed with more than 300,000 porcelain pieces including plates, bowls, spoons, teacups, ladles and wine cups. It serves as a replica of the Stupas Pagoda built in the Qing Dynasty in the Manfeilong Village of the Yunnan Province. In keeping with the Garden’s commitment to sustainability, “Giant Dandelion & Panda will be constructed using recycled water bottles. Visitors will be able to take pictures with the larger-than-life flowers creating a cherished photo opportunity. In addition to using recycled materials in several sets, the Garden plans to conduct a sale following the conclusion of the festival for St. Louisans to take home their own unique piece of Garden history. Ameren Missouri Pure Power will donate Missouri wind energy credits to offset the electricity required to power the exhibit. Lantern Festival tickets are on sale now. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to ensure they have the opportunity to see the exhibit on their preferred night. There is no additional charge to view the Lanterns during daytime hours, but special evening pricing begins at 6 p.m. on the nights the exhibit is open. Lanterns will not be lit during Whitaker Music Festival evenings. The Missouri Botanical Garden is

located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway North and South exit. Free parking is available on site and two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer. For general information, visit www.mobot.org or call (314) 577‑5100 (toll-free, 1‑800‑642‑8842). But Nazi p ro p a g a n d a w a s m u c h m o re complex than that. the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising, says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people. The exhibition reveals how shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. After seizing power, the Nazi

Party took over all communications in Germany. It marshaled the state’s resources to consolidate power and relentlessly promote its vision of a “racially pure, utopian Germany that needed to defend itself from those who would destroy it. "Hot Pursuit"

"Hot Pursuit" has all the trappings of a buddy comedy except that whole comedy part. The pairing of Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, like the recent Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart comedy "Get Hard," is predicated on the distance between the two in height and culture. But, good lord, where are the jokes? Witherspoon plays an uptight, low-ranking San Antonio police officer named Cooper. In her first major assignment since accidentally tasering a teenager (not the best timing for police brutality gags), she's sent with a partner to protect a drug lord set to testify in court, along with his wife, Daniella (Vergara). A shootout at their house leaves the husband dead and sends Cooper and Daniella on the run. They make an odd couple: an inexperienced but straight-as-an-arrow cop and a haughty, high-heeled trophy wife trailing her luggage. The film, directed by Anne Fletcher ("The Guilt Trip") and penned by "Ben and Kate" scribes David Feeney and John Quaintance, strains to find reason to keep the two on the lam. A corrupt police department excuse is cooked up and not one but two cell phones are destroyed. As the two navigate the Texas countryside, they survive by exploiting the sexist underestimations of their male pursuers and those that get in their way. This is a promising enough conceit, and one wants to root for "Hot Pursuit," the rare studio comedy led by women both in front and behind the camera. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content, violence, language and some drug material." RUNNING TIME: 87 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

"Maggie"

Would you stand by your child if she was slowly dying of a gruesome and highly contagious illness? That's the central question that Arnold Schwarzenegger has to face in "Maggie," a terminal illness drama where the malady at hand involves morphing into a member of the flesh-eating undead. Director Henry Hobson's film imagines a world devastated by zombies — although no one ever says that word. Instead of turning to genre conventions, though, "Maggie" stays small, intimate, and fascinatingly realistic. Set in a small Midwestern town, society is still tenuously functioning amid the breakout. Hospitals diagnose the afflicted and set terms for mandatory quarantines before the diseased turn truly dangerous. The police, also, are there to enforce. Other institutions, though, are all but abandoned. Gas stations are empty and electricity is unreliable. For many, life continues as normally as possible. There are no rogue bands of hostile survivalists competing over bunkers and land and no massive zombie armies attacking. "Maggie" is zombie tale that is more interested in the microcosm — the effects of the virus on the family unit and the community, not the shocks and thrills of an all-out war. If this seems like a surprising choice for Schwarzenegger, it is. Even more surprising? He's pretty great. The heart of the movie is the relationship between Wade (Schwarzenegger) and his teenage daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin). She's infected and missing when the film starts, but Wade searches for two weeks to find her and bring her back to the country home that he shares with his new wife (Joely Richardson) and their young children. There, Wade waits for Maggie to transform, trying to spend as much time with her as possible in the interim. Maggie, in turn, fluctuates between all the emotions of dealing with a life cut too short — and her fatal, itchy and grotesque wound. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "disturbing thematic material including bloody images, and some language."

"Mad Max: Fury Road"

The silences in "Mad Max: Fury Road" are unsettling. The moments are few and infrequent, but it's not until the fiery roar of the engines and the thrashing of the guitars are suddenly stripped away that you can fully feel how deeply the film has flooded your being. The theater — and your heart — pulsates with the lack as you recover and wait for more. It's in the silences that director George Miller's singular genius becomes evident, and for good reason: It's the only time the film allows you to breathe. Thirty years after Miller gave the world "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," he's returned to his own post-apocalyptic world and created an exceptional, fearless and poetic masterpiece that's primed to become a modern classic. In this anarchic world, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is a lone wolf. As he tells us in the prologue, he's a man whose past traumas have reduced him to a single instinct: Survival. Max's only humanity seems to be in his haunting visions of a child asking for protection. Otherwise, he's gone full animal. As Max, Hardy doesn't so much speak. He grunts and growls and scurries for freedom. But Max quickly gets entangled with others when the war lords of the wasteland put a fish hook in his neck and strap him on as a hood ornament to chase after the rogue Furiosa (Charlize Theron). She's managed to escape the Citadel in a powerful, lumbering War Rig with the wives of their tyrannical leader Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne, who also played Toecutter in "Mad Max"). Much of the film is spent with the women, and eventually Max, on the rig as they race across the desert away from the painted fighters on their tail. Furiosa, seeking redemption for untold sins, has made it her purpose to bring the wives to "the green place" — an idyllic haven she was taken from as a child. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images." RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

"I'll See You In My Dreams"

Loneliness is hard to capture on film. The audience can be told and shown in myriad ways, but the high highs and low lows of filmed melodrama rarely actually reflect the condition that we all know so well. Movies, just like people, can be too afraid of stillness and the banalities of the everyday. On the page, "I'll See You In My Dreams," a light comedic drama about a widow figuring out what to do with her time, seems like the perfect vehicle for emotional extremes. On screen, it's a quiet, elegant, funny, and entirely engaging portrait of a woman re-entering the dating world in her 70s and the off-beat relationships that guide her path. The protagonist, Carol (Blythe Danner), lives a contented life alone. She's been widowed for nearly 20 years, but has just lost another companion — her dog. Carol plays cards with her predictably sassy friends (June Squibb, Rhea Perlman and Mary Kay Place), but for the most part, she is by herself in her expansive, beige Los Angeles home. She gardens, she watches television, she drinks white wine, and time just passes. By allowing the audience into the ordinariness of Carol's life and boredom, we are given the

May 28, 2015

tools to empathize with her solitude. For years, the thought of dating and remarriage had never been a serious consideration for Carol. Her friends remind her that it's not for lack of offers or interest from others, though. She just doesn't open herself up to the possibility. But after her dog dies, and her whole routine starts to stale, Carol is jolted awake and out of her malaise, literally, by Lloyd (Martin Starr), a thirty something who's come to clean her pool. She asks if he thought she was dead. "You don't look that old," he replies. The awkward and memorable charm of that meeting and their burgeoning friendship isn't even the best in the film. One day in the vitamin aisle of a grocery store, a handsome stranger in the form of Sam Elliott walks up to Carol and — cigar dangling from his mustached mouth — wholly disarms her. "You don't need all that. You're just right the way you are," he says gruffly and confidently. It's the kind of flirting that transcends the fourth wall, and launches Carol back into the world of trying. She tries speed dating, she has cackling heart-to-hearts with her friends, and she sings karaoke in a hip Los Angeles dive bar with Lloyd. Carol and the ladies even manage to elevate the "senior citizens getting high" joke. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual material, drug use and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Pitch Perfect 2"

"Who run the world? GIRLS!" sing those irrepressible Barden University Bellas, channeling Beyonce, in "Pitch Perfect 2." And yes, they sure do run the world. The highly anticipated sequel to the 2012 surprise hit "Pitch Perfect" is now, more than ever, a celebration of girl power, girl bonding, girl harmony, and most of all, girl laughs. As the Beyonce song goes on to say, "Boy, don't even try to touch this." That should be good news for the many, many young women who loved the infectious "Pitch Perfect." And really, all the news is good about this sequel: It is, if anything, funnier than the original. It brings back all your favorite folks, most notably the sweetly geeky and adorable Anna Kendrick and the bawdy, nothing-is-sacred Rebel Wilson, whose Fat Amy gets more screen time and makes the most of it. There's also a new addition, Hollywood it-girl Hailee Steinfeld as an aspiring songwriter. Aside from injecting new blood into the Bellas, she's pretty much the only one who doesn't graduate college by the end of the movie — significant for future sequels. The other important change of note is that "Pitch Perfect 2" is directed by actress Elizabeth Banks, who also produces AND reprises her role as Gail, half of one of the most hilarious broadcast teams ever conceived, real or fictional. Her scenes with the cheerfully racist and sexist John (a sublime John Michael Higgins), narrating the Bellas' various competitions, are the film's highlight. "This is what happens when you send girls to college," he says disapprovingly at one point. He describes the Bellas as an "inspiration to girls all over the country too ugly to be cheerleaders." The script by Kay Cannon and Mickey Rapkin keeps the rapid-fire jokes coming. A throwaway reference to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is hysterical. Much less funny is a no-means-yes sex joke; we could have done without that one, particularly in a college setting. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "innuendo and language." RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

A jittery public is assured that the government has "ruled out terrorism."

"Your sweat smells like cinnamon! " she cries.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" didn't hit home By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The movies are a volume business when it comes to quality. You can't find a film that pleases all of the people all of the time. Unless they're Shawshank Redemption or Jaws, but titles like those only come around about once in a decade. Even the really good movies sometimes lack a certain charm that appeals to each audience member's sensibilities. My own are far from delicate, but I like to think that I expose myself to as many different genres and storytelling styles as I can because I like want to be able to find those rare gems that only garner mainstream attention from about November through Oscar Night. This week I saw George Miller's labor of love, Mad Max: Fury Road, and I struggle now to

understand not why so many people love it, but why I didn't. My love affair, if you will, with the three Mad Max movies to this point has been a roller coaster. I think 1981's The Road Warrior is a great action classic. Mel Gibson's defense of a band of peaceful folks and their tanker of gasoline from a band of roving thugs in Australia's deserts was exciting and dangerous and had a cheeky ending that still leaves me chuckling. Max Rockatansky's first picture two years earlier (which I rate a sold 'meh') shares much more in common with the new film than either of its own sequels (including '85's Beyond Thunderdome, a debacle I won't cover but to mention that it exists), but that's not necessarily a good thing. Miller's solid career totally did a 180-degree turn in later years as he tackled a lot of family-friendly fare like

the animated Happy Feet movies. With Fury Road, he returns to the badlands of our doomed apocalyptic future in a magnum opus that maybe we weren't ready for in the '80s. Taking over for Gibson is Tom Hardy as the titular Max, a growling loner that isn't particularly verbose. What you have to understand about Fury Road is that the plot doesn't unfold in typical fashion. It literally rips out of the starting gates and fills in most of the details as it speeds along. Incidentally, that's my main gripe. Maybe I'm getting lazy, but I don't like to figure it out as I go (the "Tarantino Problem", I'll call this). Max is captured by the disciples of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), a grossly disfigured villain with a Messiah complex that is equal parts folk hero leader and psychopathic Skeletor impersonator on the same day that Joe's most

capable Imperator (a driver), Furiosa (Charlize Theron), takes off from their home in the Citadel with the War Rig, three thousand gallons of gas, and Joe's five favorite wives (played literally by a quintet of gorgeous supermodels like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough) in tow. She's headed for the home across the desert where women can raise society again from the ashes instead of being used as property for breeding. The mythology of Fury Road is going to be what resonates with the fanboys that are turning out to see things like flame-throwing electric guitars, monster trucktired Cadillacs, and skulls used everywhere for adornment. That said, the production value on this movie is Top 1% for sure. Vehicles a re m a s h e d u p a n d re f i t t e d together to come up with hybrids

May 28, 2015

that defy even my own attempts at description. My favorite was the shell of a VW bug used as a gun turret on the back of Furiosa's rig. Gearhead culture is a focal point of the action, especially with the Warboy-cum-redeemed hero Nux (Nicholas Hoult) who spends the first forty-five minutes of this nonstop car chase tethered to Max via an intravenous blood draw. I am a little disappointed in the over-hyped feminist ideals I'm hearing attributed to the overall plot and Theron's role in particular. Furiosa (and her prosthetic left arm) are cool and driven by great aims, but that didn't resonate with the movie that I saw. Mad Max: Fury Road runs 120 minutes and is rated R for intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Religion Religion briefs Chinese cross removal protested outside China embassy

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some Christian activists have demonstrated outside the Chinese embassy in Washington to protest the forced removal of crosses from hundreds of churches in China. The Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, carried a large wooden cross while he and a few followers used a bullhorn to shout their appeal for religious freedom in China. They broadcast their protest on Twitter. Officials in China's Zhejiang (ZHUH'-zhee-ahng) province have toppled crosses from more than 400 churches since early 2014, sometimes resulting in violent clashes with congregation members. They have said the crosses violate building codes, but critics say the growth of Christian groups has made the ruling Communist Party nervous. Mahoney says Chinese officials emerged from the embassy to photograph the protesters, but didn't speak with them.

Judge to protesters: End 11-year vigil inside closed church

BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts judge has ordered parishioners of the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church to end their 11-year protest vigil and vacate the now-closed Roman Catholic church. Norfolk County Superior Court Judge Edward Leibensperger ruled Thursday that the parishioners are "unlawfully and intentionally" trespassing at the church building in Scituate. He said they will be barred from entering the church effective May 29. The Archdiocese of Boston, which had sued to evict the group, urged protesters to end the vigil and respect the judge's ruling. But the Friends of St. Frances, the group that has been occupying the former church day and night since 2004, say they're not going anywhere. They intend to ask the state court to stay the ruling pending an appeal. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church was among dozens closed

Nun seeks more aid for Iraqi Christians

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Iraqi nun is urging Congress to send more aid to Christians displaced by the Islamic State group. Sister Diana Momeka, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that religious minorities have received virtually no government help since fleeing to Iraq's Kurdish region last August. She said more than 120,000 of the displaced are living in containers and decrepit buildings without jobs or adequate assistance. Momeka said she and other Christians don't want to leave Iraq, but would return to their homes in Mosul and the Nineveh plain when Islamic State militants are driven out.

Illinois cooks up the fun For The Edge Summer is the season of festivals and fairs, and you can find a festival for just about everything in Illinois. This year, find something more by visiting some of Illinois’ offbeat and quirky foodie festivals dedicated to rhubarb, bagels and even horseradish! Each festival has its own unique story for how it came to be. Some of Illinois unique summer food festivals include: Bagelfest, Mattoon— Bagelfest is a 29 year old festival in Mattoon that began on the idea of hospitality. When the Lender’s Bagel Factory moved to Mattoon, not everyone in town knew about bagels. So Murray Lender introduced his product to the community with a free bagel breakfast held in

downtown Mattoon. And then a festival was born. Gumbo Ya Ya Mardi Gras, Rock Island— The spirit of New Orleans comes alive on the Mississippi River in Rock Island. The two-day celebration includes Cajun food and music, a French Quarter marketplace and plenty of beads. Rhubarb Festival, Kankakee—Illinoisans visit this festival for the pie, but they stay for the Rhubarb jam, live music, baking contest and games. Red, White & BBQ, Westmont— Red, White and BBQ is a competition dedicated to tasty barbecue, music, and fun at Ty Warner Park in Westmont. Festival goers enjoy great food, BBQ tips, live music, an all-ages carnival and they observe some of the best BBQ experts as they compete to win prize money. Horseradish Festival, Collinsville— The International

Horseradish Festival draws a crowd from around the country and the world to "the Horseradish Capitol" for fun, activities, games and great food and drink. The festival features live music, food stands, games, a craft show, a Bloody Mary contest, a horseradish cooking contest and a relay race. Culinary Champions, Aurora—City officials from the Illinois communities of Aurora, Batavia, Big Rock, Hinckley, Montgomery, North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich, Sugar Grove and Yorkville will be judge and select the area's best Culinary Champions every summer. Participating restaurants compete for the top spot in categories like best pizza, soup, dessert and farm-to-table meal. For more information, vist www.enjoyillinois.com.

Dining Delights

Adriana's On The Hill By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge The Hill in St. Louis is an iconic neighborhood synonymous for fantastic food, most notably traditional Italian fare. After all, Italian immigrants found a home in the St. Louis neighborhood in the 1890s and it later became the home of such great Italian St. Louisans as Joe Garagiola and Yogi Berra. In 1970 The Hill formed its neighborhood organization and as prospered since with its respectable businesses — especially its restaurants. I've visited The Hill on multiple occasions, trying its different awesome Italian restaurants and I haven't been disappointed. Recently I had the opportunity to meet with some friends for a Saturday lunch soiree. The restaurant of choice was Adriana's on the Hill located at 5101 Shaw Ave. The small lunch cafe, established in 1992, is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This was my first venture to Adriana's and I learned quickly of its popularity. The line snaked from the counter, around the tables in the small open dining area and to the door. My friends beat me there so they went ahead and ordered and grabbed a table while one was available. Unfortunately, they were practically done with their meals by the time I was able to sit down with them. I wasn't pleased with the wait time, but I know it was busy, so I gave Adriana's the benefit of the doubt and imagined the food must be well worth it. Once at the counter, the service was very friendly and helpful. The menu is small and very manageable to sift through at

20

Adriana's. There is a pizza and pasta portion, salads, sandwiches, lunch specials, daily specials and the soup of the day. I went with the half and half order off of the lunch special category, which included a salad, half a sandwich and a piece of bread. Adriana's offers quality choices on the sandwich menu. I went with one where I had a little creativity to

On the Edge of the Weekend

build my own, the Salam De Testa. The Salam De Testa starts with cooked salami and then you get to choose the toppings and the bread. For my creation, I added black olives (a favorite of mine), tomatoes, lettuce, onions, provel cheese and vinaigrette dressing served on thick garlic bread. It was accompanied by a side salad with vinaigrette dressing. Starting with the salad, it was

May 28, 2015

very fresh and included iceberg lettuce, pimentos, a blend of provel and parmesan cheeses and tossed in the delectable vinaigrette dressing. It was a wonderful light lunch option. The sandwich was impressive just by the thickness of the salami. It was some of the thickest salami I've had. As for the rest of the sandwich I was a little disappointed. It went chintzy on the tomatoes, black olives and

cheese, but heavy on the lettuce and vinaigrette. Maybe the biggest disappointment was the garlic bread, which wasn't very garlicky at all. In various bites I could get a hint of garlic, but it wasn't much. While lunch was good, it wasn't necessarily as memorable as I was expecting. T h e re a re p l e n t y o f o t h e r sandwich choices for anyone who visits though. The Italian Salsiccia stands out, with Italian sausage in a house made red sauce and provel cheese with roasted red peppers and onions. There is also the Grace, served with salsiccia and pepperoni, provel cheese and the house red sauce. The Hill Boy is interesting, comprised of turkey breast, ham and roast beef, with provel cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and Adriana's special dressing. The pizza and pasta portion of the menu looks to be worth checking out with the penne pasta blanketed with Adriana's own Sicilian tomato basil sauce. The pizzas are all thin crust and either nine or 14 inches with simple topping choices, including: sausage, pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives and anchovies. C h ec k o u t w w w. adrianasonthehill.com to peruse the rest of the menu and don't miss the daily specials and soups of the day like minestrone, potato herb and many more delicious choices. Price wise Adriana's is pretty affordable, especially for The Hill. For my half and half order it only cost $7.99. So if you're on The Hill looking for a laid back spot for a light lunch and an affordable meal, stop by and check out Adriana's when you gotta eat.
