Fred Eaglesmith (Vittoria, ON) is a legendary Canadian songwriter

and showman who has been touring North America, and abroad for 30 years. He has 20 critically acclaimed albums, has performed on the Late Show with David Letterman and his songs have been recorded by stars including Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Alan Jackson, the Cowboy Junkies and others. The Bottle Rockets (Festus, MO) were instrumental in developing the alt.country music sound in the early 1990s, influencing generations of roots rockers and country punks like the Gourds, and the Drive-By Truckers. They were the rural heirs to the Clash, the Pogues and the Replacements. R o b b i e F u lks (C hic ago , IL) broke into music flat-picking and singing for legendary bluegrass band Special Consensus. He left the band in 1990 and became an important player in the alt.country music scene releasing many albums on Bloodshot and Geffen Records. Rolling Stone says “Fulks sounds like the wiseass bastard son of Roger Miller.” His latest CD offers a trad/ bluegrass sound with stunning songs, soaring vocals and blazing instrumentals. Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real (Los Angeles, CA) is newer on the scene but is quickly building a large and loyal fan base all over the world. Lukas first picked up the guitar at age 11 to honor a promise he made to his father and was able to teach himself the craft by playing along to classic Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix songs. This American rock and roll band has played over 400 shows in the past three years and played with Neil Young, John Fogerty, Bob Weir, B.B. King, and Bob Dylan. The Giving Tree Band is a seven piece roots-music outfit from Northern Illinois. The Austin Chronicle explains the band's sound as "Seventies American music with The Band and the Dead as obvious touchstones, plus the kind

of country/almost-bluegrass of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.” Elizabeth McQueen (Austin, TX), after eight years of singing with Asleep at the Wheel, has returned to her own creative career making music ranging from jazz to rock and roll to country swing. Tif Ginn has been touring with the Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Steam Show for five years, fronting her own band, then playing and singing with Fred’s band. Noted for her edgy songwriting and gutsy performance, she plays songs of trial and heartbreak in a rock and roll style. Matt Poss Band from Effingham, IL has been at the heart of Central Illinois’ country-Americana music scene for over a decade, with tours of Germany and Afghanistan under his belt as well. MPB closes out Friday night at the festival. Chain Station, from Denver, CO will provide their cheeky blend of attitude and altitude, highenergy mountain music, with a heavy emphasis on bluegrass and instrumental expertise.

Science Center to screen D-Day film

The Saint Louis Science Center and 3D Entertainment Distribution invite audiences to step back in time with the new giant screen theater film D-Day: Normandy 1944, which opens at the Science Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on April 25, 2014. In May 1943, World War II is at its apex. To counter Hitler and the Axis forces, the Allies decide to open a second front on the western side of Europe. The Allied forces, led by U.S. General Eisenhower, have just months to organize the operation code-named “Overlord,” with only a 50/50 chance of success, that will break Hitler ’s Atlantic Wall fortress and lead to the Battle of Normandy.

The One Place to go for all your financial needs!

Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly u n i q u e m a n n e r. D - D a y i t s e l f is well-known, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world. “We wanted to make a film to pay tribute to the millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians, wh o gave their lives for our freedom 70 years ago. Regardless of nationality, virtually everyone today has a parent, grandparent or even a great-grandparent with a connection to World War II,” explained writer and director Pascal Vuong. “I thought for a long time about how to produce a large format documentary on this subject, and finally found my own way of telling this complex story to family audiences using a brandnew ‘cocktail,’ mixing innovative film techniques.” Blending multiple cinematographic formats, including animation, CGI and

stunning live-action images, D-Day: Normandy 1944 brings this monumental event to the world’s largest screens for the very first time. Exploring science, t e c h n o l o g y, e n g i n e e r i n g a n d mathematics, audiences of all ages, including new generations, will discover from a new perspective in breathtaking OMNIMAX how this landing changed the course of history. “What I was drawn to in this film is that it tells us the story of D-Day in a new way that gives such clarity to one of the most important events in the history of mankind,” said Brokaw. “I originally thought this was going to be another traditional documentary featuring grainy black and white footage, but as soon as I saw the first minutes of this film on the giant OMNIMAX screen, I found it irresistible.” “After seeing this film, we think our audiences will feel a deeper gratitude for the courage and sacrifices of these champions of freedom,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center.

People People planner Circus Flora to open May 29

The beloved St. Louis institution , Circus Flora, powered by Ameren, returns for its 28th season to present "The Pawn," a chess game brought to life through the circus. The World CHess Hall of Fame and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis partner with the circus to create a delightfully imaginative world under the big top next to Powell Hall, May 29 to June 22. Every June, more than 30,000 audience members gather under the big top and leave behind the everyday, entering a place of intrigue and awe. Here the impossible is possible. Adults as well as children are enthralled by a performance that captures their imaginations and transports them to a bygone era. The Circus Flora experience is palpable: the audience is completely immersed in a spellbinding story that is woven through every detail, from performers to costumes to original music. Drawing from the history of chess, this mythic tale is steeped in right sights, sounds and the mystique of ancient Persia and India. The audience will journey to an exotic world where myth and intellect collide, and the stone city surrenders to the desert's every shifting sands. Follow the Pawn through his journey through curious creatures and intrigues: knights on mounted steed, bishops zigzagging across colored squares, chess pieces flying through the air. In this world, the chess pieces do not wait to be moved. They have their own adventures to play out under the big top. The tale is presented by a cast of hand-picked and internationally renowned circus artists. Making his debut under Circus Flora's big top, clown Andy Kuchler plays the Pawn, maneuvering through the enchanting world of the chess board, encountering friends and foes along the way. Kuchler will meet performers and characters such as an equestrian bareback rider, S. Caleb Carinci-Asch, as he balances fearlessly atop his galloping horse. From Finland and making their U.S. debut, Duo Kate and Pasi will captivate with hand-to-hand and foot juggling finesse. Andriy Bilobrov and his Jack Russell Terriers will show the audience man's best friends like never before. Claire KuciejczykKernan mesmerizes the crowd from above with daring swingingtrapesze performance. Also joining this year are six rare, blue-eyed pied camels from the Canary Islands. "The Pawn" will also feature celebrated Colombian flying trapeze artists, The Flying Cortes, who will introduce new twists, spins and summersaults as well as returning favorites The Flying Wallendas and local troupe, The St. Louis Arches. Circus Flora presents a truly immersive experience unlike anything else in the country. As artistic director and producer David Balding explains, "Sometimes we need respite from our everyday realities. Circus Flora takes you out of the ordinary, and deep into a magical world. Once you enter the big top, you forget everything else." Circus Flora will not only thrill its audience, but it will woo with a beautiful storyline, delight with its comedy and – like any good work of art – is is an experience that is impossible to forget. Tickets are now on sale for Circus Flora’s 27th big-top production, "The Pawn," powered by Ameren.

Call 314-289-4040 or visit www. circusflora.org for tickets. Tickets are also available at the Circus Flora Box Office at 3547 Olive Street in Grand Center.  Tickets start at $12y. Show times are Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 1 and 7 p.m.; Sunday at 1 and 5:30 p.m.; and “Little Top Wednesday” at 10 a.m., a special one-hour show for younger kids or the “kids at heart.” Founded in St. Louis in 1987, C i rc u s F l o r a i s a n o n p ro f i t p e r f o r m i n g a r t s o rg a n i z a t i o n dedicated to sharing the magic of classic, one-ring circus with audiences of all ages. Music John Michael Montgomery to headline "Feed the Need" concert By SCOTT MARION Of The Edge For many older adults in Madison County, the Meals on Wheels program is their lifeline. And now John Michael Montgomery is doing his part to keep that line flowing. The country music superstar will be headlining the fifth annual “Feed the Need” Meals on Wheels Benefit Concert on June 7 at the Liberty Bank Amphitheater, located at 1 Riverfront Drive in Alton. The Harman Family Bluegrass Band will be the opening act. The event is the primary fundraiser for Senior Services Plus, an Alton-based not-forprofit organization that offers programs and services for older adults. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the agency’s Meals on Wheels program. “We didn’t have an established fundraiser like a golf tournament or a dinner, and there were not many local organizations using music for fundraisers or benefits,” said Jonathan Becker, executive director of Senior Services Plus. “With the amphitheater opening in Alton and the way it was designed and built, we saw a great opportunity. “It’s evolved into our one and only fundraiser. We’ve had different themes, but the last two years we’ve gone with bluegrass and country because it seems to be a big draw. We’re lucky to get John Michael Montgomery and the Harmans are a local favorite.” Senior Services Plus is the largest Meals on Wheels provider in southern Illinois, fixing 600 meals a day for seniors from Godfrey to Lebanon. “We have a dedicated staff that starts cooking at 5 a.m.,” Becker said. “We make sure seniors get a healthy, nutritious meals and we make sure they’re safe. “Sixty percent of our meal recipients don’t have relatives that live in the area. Outside of mail delivery, our staff may be the only ones knocking on their door.” It didn’t take much arm-twisting to get Montgomery involved with the benefit. “They called and asked if I would like to be part of it,” Montgomery said in a phone interview from his home in Nicholasville, Ky. “I love to help out, especially if it’s people who have fallen on hard times or if it’s kids. I’m a big St. Jude’s (Children’s Research Hospital) donor. “Helping raise money for a good cause is my way of giving back. I get a lot of requests to do shows for charities and it’s impossible to do all of them, but I whittle them down and try to do the ones that fit into my schedule.” Montgomery has been a major force on the country music scene since beginning his major-label solo career in 1992. He has had more than 30 singles on the Billboard country charts, with five reaching No. 1. Two of his songs, “I Swear” and “Sold,” were named as the top country songs of 1994 and 1995, respectively. Montgomery’s recordings of “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That” were both released concurrently with rhythm and blues versions by the group All-4-One. Several of his singles crossed to the Billboard Top 100, including “Letters From Home,” which peaked at No. 2 country and No. 24 pop in 2004. While Montgomery has played many times in the St. Louis area, this will be his first show at the amphitheater, which is booking more national acts this year. “I don’t remember being in Alton, but after 22 years on the road, I don’t remember every show in every city,” Montgomery said. “I might have played the (Argosy) casino. I’m looking forward to checking out the amphitheater because I’ve heard good things about it.” Montgomery is just getting into the busiest part of his touring schedule. “In March, April and May, I’m usually out one weekend and off one weekend,” Montgomery said. “June is when we hit the road hard, doing things like fairs, festivals and

John Michael Montgomery rodeos. “When it comes to touring, I’ve seen both ends of the spectrum. I was playing nightclubs when I got my break in 1992, and by 1995 I was headlining big arenas. “Now I’m pretty much playing smaller venues, but I still put my pants on the same way, put on my guitar in the same way and stand in front of the microphone the same way. I want to put on the best show I possibly can.” Montgomery, who hasn’t been in the studio since 2008, is headed back there along with rhythm and blues band All-4-One. “All-4-One is doing a duets album to mark the 20th anniversary of “I Swear” and I’m doing a collaboration with them,” Montgomery said. “That song is also going to be part of a new greatest hits album for me along with a couple new songs.” Montgomery also hopes to go into the studio with his brother Eddie, who along with Troy Gentry would form the duo Montgomery Gentry. Before John Michael was signed to a record contract, he performed for a while in a band called Early Tymz with Eddie and Gentry. “My brother and I have talked a long time about heading into the studio and doing a song or two together, but as we get older, it’s hard to find the time,” Montgomery said. “We’ve never recorded together because we’re on different labels and different booking agencies, which means a lot of red tape. “We’re doing a show this weekend in Roanoke, Va., which will be our first together in 10 years. We’d like to do some more and this is a way of testing the waters.” Montgomery has a loyal fan base around the nation, and the Alton area is no exception. “I’ve been very fortunate to have fans who

May 29, 2014

have stuck with me through thick and thin since 1992,” Montgomery said. “Now a lot of those fans have teenage kids who grew up hearing my music while riding in the back seat of the car. “It’s great that I’ve been around long enough to see that happens. I think a lot of those songs are timeless and fun to sing for the fans.” With so many hits over the years, Montgomery has no problem filling an entire set list with recognizable songs. “I switch around a song here and there, but the fans want to hear the hits and I try to sing as many of them as I can,” Montgomery said. “If I didn’t sing some of those songs, people would want their money back, but I still love singing them.” Montgomery was born in Danville, Ky., to parents who imparted a lifelong love of music. The family band played on weekends throughout the area and guitarist John Michael took over the lead vocals when his parents divorced. “Having a mom and dad in the music business was a great thing for me and my brother,” Montgomery said. “For my dad, being on stage on front of people, that was a natural thing, and I learned a lot from him. “He didn’t just sings songs, he would tell stories and acknowledge the crowd. These days, that might be considered kind of old school, but I grew up watching my dad talk to the audience like they were in his living room. To this day, I try to do the same thing.” Kim Campbell, events and activities coordinator for Senior Services Plus, is thrilled to have Montgomery as the “Feed the Need” headliner. “Having a big-name artist like John Michael Montgomery does a lot of justice to the Meals on Wheels program and helps

build awareness because it doesn’t get a lot of attention,” Campbell said. “There are a lot of homebound seniors and this program gives them nutritious meals and provides somebody to check in on them to make sure they’re OK. It also helps those individuals remain able to live on their own, which is our main goal.” The Harman Family Bluegrass Band consists of first- and second-generation musicians with roots dating back to 1975. Their style ranges from traditional to contemporary bluegrass, country, gospel and various other types of music. “We knew John Michael Montgomery would draw a lot of people,” Campbell said. “The meet and greet tickets are great because people can bring items for him to sign and get a photo with him while raising money for a good cause. “I believe he’s been to Alton before (at the casino), but not for a fundraiser. Our ticket sales have been the best we’ve had so far and we hope to sell a lot more. “But we also wanted to draw the local crowd, which is why we brought back the Harmans, who are originally from Shipman, Ill.” Tickets are $30 and are available online at seniorservicesplus.org or the Alton Center, 2603 N. Rodgers Ave. in Alton. For more information, call 465-3298, ext. 100 or 1-800233-4904. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the Harmans taking the stage at 6 p.m. Montgomery and his band are slated to play at 8:30. In addition to the regular tickets, $80 “Meet and Greet” tickets are also available. Fans who purchase those tickets will be able to have personal items autographed by Montgomery and have a photo taken with him. The meet and greet will be held from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. prior to his performance. There is also a raffle to win an autographed Fender CD60 guitar autographed by Montgomery, along with a hard-shell case. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Alton Center or Halpin Music, 2375 Homer Adams Parkway in Alton. The winner will be drawn at the concert on June 7. “ F o r a n y o n e w h o i s i n t e re s t e d i n supporting Meals on Wheels, this is a prime opportunity,” Campbell said. “For people who have never seen a concert at the amphitheater, it’s a very enjoyable venue. We hope to draw the spotlight onto the Meals on Wheels program.” While most people are familiar with the Meals on Wheels concept, they may not be aware of the other benefits of the service. “We’re not supposed to leave the meals without making contact with people, and in many cases they’ve fallen and broken a hip or had some other serious injury,” Becker said. “Many times, we’ve called 911 to send help for them. “The majority of people we serve meals to are lower income or poverty level and our funding only pays for about half of the cost. We have a suggested donation of $3.50, but the average that we actually get is 63 cents. With food prices and fuel prices continually increasing, that makes it really hard.” The economic and social benefits are equally important. “We provide a service for homebound seniors and support people staying at home,” Becker said. “It’s proven that Meals on Wheels saves the state money “We serve 22 townships every day. Our combined programs outside of Meals on Wheels touch the lives of about 3,000 people.” With those challenges in mind, Becker is happy to have someone of Montgomery’s stature perform at the amphitheater. “He’s been great to work with,” Becker said. “The Harman family has been working with us for the last three years and they’re great too.”

Music

For The Edge

Kristina Cottone, left, with Honey & the 45s.

By SCOTT MARION Of The Edge

I

t's a long way from the classrooms of Edwardsville High School to the blues clubs of Chicago, but for Kristina Cottone, the path is connected by her love for music.

A Glen Carbon native and a 2004 EHS graduate, Cottone is a singer, guitarist and songwriter for Honey & the 45s, which also includes singer, violinist and saxophonist Kim Kozel; bassist Sean Tatum; lead guitarist Jon Gould and drummer Jarad Kleinstein. They were recently named Best Blues/Jazz Band in Chicago at the Chicago Independent Music Awards, held in April at the Field Museum. "Chicago is such a blues and jazz city with places to play, and so many blues and jazz monsters have come out of them," said Cottone, who is 28. "We were excited just to get the nomination and we were surprised to win it." "I think it's because we're a fresh face and we're bringing the younger crowd back to blues, jazz and soul. It's good timing because we're on the cusp of recording a new album." It will be the second full-length album for the band, following its debut, "The Need," which was released in September, 2012. "We have a six-song EP coming out of music that we've already recorded, and it feels good to get those songs out," Cottone said. "We'll start recording the new album in late May or early June and we're hoping it will be released in late August or early September. "We'll be doing the album at a great Chicago studio, I.V. Labs, where our lead guitarist and drummer have both recorded before. They like the equipment there and they have a good working relationship with some of the engineers. "We recorded the first album completely on our own at several different locations, but it was fun recording it that way. It will be a lot different going into an efficient, professional studio and we'll probably use a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for it. We enjoyed doing the first album, but we've found a new direction and we want to go with it." Cottone's description of the recording process could also apply to the themes on the new album. "We talk about changing directions and the calling back of

one's self," Cottone said. "We talk about taking the path less traveled in your life. "We have a new bassist and a new drummer since we did the first album, so our sound is a little different. On the first album, I wrote a lot of the songs ahead of time, but this time there are a lot more cooks in the kitchen. It's more collaborative. "It's still got a blend of rock, soul and blues, but from me, there's also a little bit of that folk influence. The sound is more cohesive and there are more jazz undertones from our new drummer." Cottone is the daughter of Laura Perkins of Glen Carbon (a retired SIUE professor) and Robert "Rocco" Cottone of St. Charles, Mo. While she doesn't get home very often, she has fond memories of her family and her high school days, especially in regard to music and theater. "I just got an invitation for my 10-year reunion, which makes me feel old," Cottone said, laughing. "My aunt was an actress and my grandfather was a jazz singer who spent some time in Chicago. Then he moved to Mexico and played mariachi for a while." After being in the show choir in middle school, Cottone got even more involved with music and theater at EHS. "Kate Motley is an outstanding high school drama teacher who pushes her students to be the best they can be," Cottone said. "She's a big part of why I got into acting." Cottone went on to Northern Illinois University, where she graduated in 2008 with a bachelor of fine arts in acting. She moved to Chicago and soon became an actress and marketing director for Organic Theater Company, whose producing artistic director, Alexander Gelman, is also on the faculty at NIU. "After I graduated from NIU, I did a showcase in Chicago and signed with an agency and that's when I joined Organic Theater Company," Cottone said. "I was marketing director for five years, but I recently resigned because things are going so well with music. But I'm still close with Organic and I'm not ruling out going back there to do some shows." On the music front, Cottone got a chance to play in her hometown when Honey & the 45s did a show at the Wildey Theatre in March 2013. "It was one of my favorite shows we've ever played and the band loved it, too, because everyone was so warm and welcoming," Cottone said. "We'd love to do it again."

Another favorite venue for Honey & the 45s is BB's Jazz, Blues and Soups in St. Louis, where the band played on April 12. "St. Louis always treats us well and when we play there, the band gets to crash at the house where I grew up in Glen Carbon," Cottone said. "We really enjoy BB's and they seem to like working with us, so we'll probably come back to St. Louis this fall. "We'd also like to do something in Edwardsville. We also played at SIUE last year when we played at the Wildey, and that was special for me since my mom taught there." Cottone's full-time job is as an administrative assistant at Navigant Economics, a consulting firm. "Kim Kozel, who is in the band with me, also works there and the company is extremely supportive of us," Cottone said. "They've hired the band to play at some of their functions and they gave us some advice to make sure we're all on the same page." Regular concert stops for Honey & the 45s include Chicago and its suburbs, St, Louis, Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. But the band is expanding its range to Champaign, Springfield, Ill., Columbia, Mo., Kansas City and Minnesota. "In November, we're booked to do a wedding in Detroit, and we're thinking about going to the East Coast after that," Cottone said. The band was originally known as Snow on Sunday, a folk/ acoustic trio featuring Cottone and Kozel, when it was formed in 2009. It changed its name to Honey & the 45s in 2011. "The five of us have been together long enough that we know how to push each other's buttons — the chemistry is there," Cottone said. "We give each criticism and feedback and we're all helping each other. "We're committed to really strong rehearsals and the group is focused on musicianship. We're not just a brand - we hold ourselves up to higher standards." Cottone remembers what a thrill it was to hear the band's music on the radio for the first time. But it may not be long before Honey and the 45s makes its mark on another medium. "We have some potential licensing deals to use our music on some upcoming TV shows," Cottone said. "I can't say anything else about it right now, but we're pretty excited." For more information about the band, go to its website, http://www.honeyandthe45s.com/

Fox to welcome Bob Weir

Bob Weir and Ratdog with very special guest The Chris Robinson Brotherhood will appear Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. Live at The Fox Theatre. Tickets are $99.50, $59.50, $49.50, $39.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. With a touring history that has made him one of the most traveled road musicians of all time and a restless music personality that has kept him occupied for over 50 years, Weir knows a thing or two about staying fresh and living in the moment. Although best known as one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, adding Dead staples such as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Cassidy” to the band’s catalog, Weir obtained a long and affluent music career that has allowed him to do what he loves and share it with others for nearly his entire life. In 1964, at the age of 17, Weir spent the majority of his time at a Palo Alto music store where Jerry Garcia taught guitar lessons. It wasn’t long before Weir and Garcia, along with Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, formed a blues and folk outfit. Originally called Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks—adding Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzman to the lineup—and eventually came to be known as the Grateful Dead. Throughout the late 1980s and during the first half of the 1990s, the Dead remained Weir ’s primary gig. Touring incessantly while all the while building up a community of “Deadheads,” the band finally found commercial success with their 1987 album, In the Dark. When Garcia died in 1995, Weir had just recently formed RatDog with Rob

Wasserman, a bassist he had been playing duo shows with since the late 1980s. After Garcia’s death, former Primus drummer Jay Lane and ex-Kingfish harmonica/guitar player Matthew Kelly were added into the mix. With a revolving lineup, the group toured relentlessly, building a name for themselves while performing a mix of new Weir compositions and older, reworked Dead songs. In 1998, Weir reunited with several former Dead bandmates to tour as The Other Ones, releasing a live album in 1999 and hitting the road again in 2000. The same year, RatDog released their first album, Evening Moods. In 2009, original Grateful Dead members Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart teamed up with guitarist Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboardist Chimenti to tour as the Dead. The results, however, were erratic, leaving Weir feeling like the road trip was more work than fun and Lesh saying the music didn’t seem to be moving forward. Besides stirring up some commotion, the ’09 Dead tour reminded Weir and Lesh of the chemistry the two had as bandmates. This led to the creation of Furthur—arguably one of the most successful Dead projects Weir has participated in to date. On April 29th, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood returns from gathering the ineffable with Phosphorescent Harvest, their third long playing album for Silver Arrow Records. Having first unshackled the air with Big Moon Ritual (June 1012) and The Magic Door (September 2012), the band--Robinson (Lead vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Adam Macdougall (keys, vocals), George Sluppick (drums), and Mark Dutton (bass, vocals)--trucked the realms relentlessly, including a 118-show stretch that never failed to illuminate blank nights to just this side of clarity. Late 2013 saw the fruits of that labor forever captured in the proverbial amber by legendary tape priestess, Betty CantorJackson (Grateful Dead), on the eight-sided limited-edition vinyl release Betty's S.F. Blends Volume 1, which documented a glorious five night run at San Francisco's famed American Music Hall. Phosphorescent Harvest features ten new songs that build on the California group's impressively growing repertoire by combining the direct and immediate songwriting Robinson has long been known for with an expansive sense of space and texture that has never been so fully realized until now. In an age when so many put their beliefs in trends, the volumes have all collapsed and rooms are filled with tiny rock and dampened lamps, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood rolls on to sharpen the blur at your brow and wind like smoke through your mind.

Harris, Jena Irene, Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, MK Nobilette, Alex Preston, Dexter Roberts, Majesty Rose, Malaya Watson and Sam Woolf. Florida Georgia Line will perform Sunday, Aug. 10, the day after the Pitbull concert.  The vocal duo has rocketed to stardom since the first four singles from its platinum-selling debut album, "Here's to the Good Times," shot to number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, including "Cruise," the bestselling digital country song of all-time and the Country Music Association's 2013 "Single of the Year." Tuesday, Aug. 12, will feature a "triple bill" of classic rock.  Headlining the show will be 70s supergroup Boston, whose hits, including

"More Than A Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Long Time," "Don't Look Back" and "Amanda," remain a staple of classic rock radio today.  Joining Boston will be the Canadian rock group April Wine, which has released more than 20 albums and performed together for more than 40 years, and Sweet, a British glam band best known for songs such as "Ballroom Blitz" and "Little Willy."  Singer and songwriter Hunter Hayes, the youngest, solo, male act ever to reach the top of the Hot Country Songs chart, will take the Grandstand stage for a concert Wednesday, Aug. 13.  Hayes already has six hit singles to his credit, including "Wanted," which reached number one just after his 21st birthday in September of 2012.  Friday, Aug. 15, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steely Dan will perform.  The duo released a string of hit songs in the 1970s, including such classic rock staples as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Do It Again," "Hey Nineteen," "Reelin' In the Years" and  "Deacon Blues."  Country singer Jake Owen, the 2012 American Country Awards "Breakthrough Artist of the Year," is the featured entertainment Saturday, Aug. 16.  Owen already has nine Top 20 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart to his credit, including the number one smash hits "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" and "Alone with You." Performers have yet to be booked for Thursday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 17. In addition to Pitbull, fairgoers also can begin buying tickets May 3 for the Hunter Hayes and Steely Dan concerts.  They will be available online at http://www.ticketmaster. com/, by phone at (800) 745-3000, or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets for the American Idol Live! Tour can be purchased the following Saturday, May 10.  Tickets for the other announced acts already are on sale. The new concert bookings were announced during a preview party on the fairgrounds to begin the countdown to the fair.  The event also included the unveiling of the 2014 Illinois State Fair theme, "Making Memories." "For many Illinoisans a trip to the fair has become a family tradition, an annual pilgrimage to celebrate our state's people, culture and heritage," Agriculture Director Bob Flider said.  "And the life-long memories of those visits have kept families coming back for generations.  I invite your family to make memories of its own when this tradition known as the Illinois State Fair is renewed Aug. 7-17." For more information about the Grandstand entertainment line-up, visit the fair's website at http://www.illiniosstatefair.info/ or call (217) 782-1979.

Music Tuning in O'Jays to perform at The Fox

Fox Concerts presents The O'Jays and Chaka Kahn on Friday, June 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $125, $90, $75, $65, $55, $45 and are on sale online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. The O'Jays are living legends… American treasures.   The term "living legend" is often overused and abused, but with The O'Jays, well, there's little argument that the honorable tag truly applies. With their place in modern music secure, The O'Jays could have cruisecontrolled to that comfy hammock on a sandy beach, umbrelladecorated drinks in hand. Why? (1) An ocean-wide body of work that spawned 24 Top Ten smashes and 59 total charted songs. (2) Incredibly energetic and dynamic live shows. (3) Mad respect for their Olympian vocals. And (4) their social and political impact on generations and nations. But doing things slowly is not Eddie Levert, Sr., Walter Williams, Sr. and Eric Nolan Grant’s modus operandi. After 40+ years making such international hits as "Back Stabbers," "For The Love Of Money," "Darlin' Darlin' Baby," "Love Train," "I Love Music," "Use Ta Be My Girl" and "Have You Had Your Love Today,". There have been “four faces” of The O’Jays. This vocal group from Canton, Ohio originated with Eddie Levert, SR., Walter Williams, SR., William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles and they were named after Cleveland DJ Eddie O’Jay. Isles left the group in 1965. Massey left to become a record producer in 1971 and Levert, Williams and Powell continues as a trio. Powell retired from touring due to illness in late 1975, passing at the age of 35 in 1977 and was replaced by Sammy Strain, formerly with Little Anthony & The Imperials. Strain returned to his former group in 1993 and was replaced by Nathaniel Best. After the departure in 1995 of Nathaniel Best, Eddie Levert, SR. and Walter Williams, SR. reached out to Eric Nolan Grant, a gifted vocalist who was already a part of the group’s extended Cleveland-based musical family. Their chart-topping album “Love You To Tears” marked Grant’s first appearance with the group. Chaka Khan is one of the world's most gifted and celebrated musicians, with a rich musical legacy, the 10-time Grammy Award-winner is looking forward to a celebration of a lifetime. A songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur and activist, Chaka Khan has influenced generations of recording artists. She has the rare ability to sing in seven music genres, including R&B, pop, rock, gospel, country, world music and classical. Affectionately known around the world as Chaka, she is revered by millions of fans as well as her peers for her timeless, classic and unmatched signature music style and ability. The late, great Miles Davis often said, "She [Chaka] sings like my horn." And the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin says, "[Chaka] is a one- of- a -kind, premier vocalist."

Church to appear in St. Louis

Eric Church’s The Outsiders World Tour will launch in North A m e r i c a o n S e p t e m b e r 11 , 2014 with 31 arena dates being announced today. Tickets for the tour are on sale with additional information made available on EricChurch.com. Members of the Church Choir will have access to a pre-sale starting on April 15. Church selected Dwight Yoakam as the special guest for the entire tour. Opening the tour on different dates throughout the first leg will be rising country music duo Brothers Osborne, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Brandy Clark, or the hard rocking band Halestorm. Hailed as a top entertainer by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN Magazine, and more, Church will bring his rip-roaring attitude when he performs at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, the Sprint Center in Kansas City, the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Atlanta, ThompsonBoling Arena in Knoxville, and FedExForum in Memphis, among others. Church will also return to the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. where he sold more than 15,000 tickets in 2012 as part of his headlining arena tour, The Blood, Sweat & Beers Tour— which Pollstar named a Top Tour of 2012. While The Blood, Sweat & Beers

Tour employed a succession of backdrops as the focus of the show, Church's The Outsiders World Tour will use a much more high tech design and will offer fans a 360° view of the entertainer and his band. Church will perform at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Sept. 13. On sale dates and ticket information for each market will be announced on EricChurch.com. The best seats on The Outsiders World Tour will once again be paperless so fans get them instead of scalpers. A limited number of VIP tickets for each show will also be available for purchase. Each VIP ticket includes a premium ticket in the first 15 rows or in the general admission pit, an invitation to a pre-show party at The Outsiders Joint, a two song acoustic pre-show performance by Eric Church, a limited edition show poster, and a dedicated VIP concert concierge. Fans have the chance to gain access to pre-sale tickets for each show by becoming a Standard or Premium member of the Church Choir. Join the Church Choir by visiting http://smarturl.it/ churchchoir.  Church’s current album, The Outsiders, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and the Billboard Country Albums Chart earlier this year, and his current hit single “Give Me Back My Hometown,” is Top 5-andrising. “Eric Church is working on a level that few other country artists of his generation can touch,” said Ken Tucker at NPR Music in his review of the album, continuing, “Shrewd, defiant, sly and funny, Eric Church has succeeded in what he set out to do: He’s using the power he’s accrued from making hit records to make exactly the kind of album he wants, heedless of industry approval. And this is how good he is: Now he’ll go out and — through the singles he’ll release, the touring he’ll do and the videos he’ll make — probably turn this personal project into a big commercial deal. The Outsiders deserves nothing less.” The Outsiders is the follow-up to Church’s Platinum-certified album

Religion Italian nun shows off singing voice By JIM YARDLEY New York Times News Service ROME — A true if unlikely tale: Young woman enrolls at a drama school sponsored by nuns, where the artistic director is a former Italian erotic film actress who redirected her career after a religious awakening. The students are selected to perform before the pope at St. Peter ’s Square, but during rehearsals the young woman fractures an ankle. Unable to perform, the young woman, Cristina Scuccia, acts on a persistent spiritual tug and commits to becoming a nun. She travels to Brazil to work with poor children and then returns to Italy to live quietly in a convent in Milan. Except she is still a talented singer, so talented that she wins a Christian singing competition, and then auditions on March 19 for Italy’s version of the television show “The Voice.” There, dressed in a full habit, with the crowd on its feet and a tattooed rap-star judge fighting back tears, she belts out a hip-shaking

rendition of “No One,” by Alicia Keys, that brings down the house and quickly goes viral on the Internet, topping 47 million views on YouTube. Gossip magazines have splashed her on their covers in her habit and featured her in articles. “It’s a very good piece of content,” said a smiling Marco Tombolini, a producer of the program, who has seen its ratings jump sharply. “It just is.” “Content” is the digital-age term for what once was called a story, and in Italy few stories match that of Sister Cristina, who is now 25. Both Keys and Whoopi Goldberg, the star of “Sister Act,” the 1992 comedy hit about singing nuns, have offered praise on Twitter. Sister Cristina has since won a “battle round” by outdueling another contestant during a duet of Cyndi Lauper’s 1980s hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and more recently sang “Hero,” by Mariah Carey. Her next appearance is expected Wednesday night. What once was nothing more than a singing show with mediocre ratings has become a TV phenomenon in Italy, with no shortage

faith is the last transgression. So the time was ripe, but no one noticed.” Others see savvy programming. Aldo Grasso, television critic for Corriere della Sera, the Milan daily, said that reality shows occasionally produced viral singing sensations, such as Susan Boyle in Britain, but that the producers of “The Voice” also “were smart to exploit the fact that there is a popular pope who speaks to the faithful using popular language.” He added: “The Web is strange, because she went viral. The ‘Sister Act’ model, the nun that can sing, is always intriguing.” Early in the year, as “The Voice” was looking for competitors to give a boost to the new season, the show’s creative director, Pasquale Romano, was scouring the Internet when he came across a video of Sister Cristina. He was stunned, and the staff invited her to sing in a conference room at the production company’s office in Rome. “It was not just picking a nun,” said Tombolini, the producer. “It was picking that specific nun. She is young. She is talented. She fits perfectly the spirit of the show.”

of potential story lines: Will Sister Cristina survive until the final round in early June? Will she convert her singing coach — the Italian rapper J-Ax — to Catholicism? And why has her appearance stirred such a huge reaction in Italy and beyond? “My dream was to be a singer,” Sister Cristina told ANSA, the state news agency, in her only interview. “The Lord has made use of my wish to call me to him, and is taking me to realize my dream in a way that I could have never imagined.” To some observers, the success of Sister Cristina is another byproduct of the new tone established during the first year of the papacy of Pope Francis. If it once might have seemed inappropriate for a nun to even appear on the show — an issue still stirring discussion on different Catholic websites — now the outpouring of public support is seen as more proof of the so-called Francis effect. “There is a tendency for music to need to be transgressive,” said the Rev. Raffaele Giacopuzzi, artistic director of the Good News Festival, the Christian singing competition won by Sister Cristina last year. “But today

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Belle"

There may be no whiter genre than the costume drama. The flowing gowns, the horse-drawn carriages, the codes of aristocratic courtship all evoke an era not exactly known for diversity. That’s why the simple poster of “Belle,” a new film directed by Amma Asante, is so striking. A beautiful, finely outfitted black woman in an 18th century parlor room stares back with regal poise. The historical incongruity is all the more arresting because, it turns out, it’s real history. “Belle” is the based-on-a-true-story of an 18th century mixedrace woman, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), brought up in British aristocracy. While such a tale is undoubtedly rich, filled with questions of identity, class and race, “Belle” is unnaturally rendered like a Jane Austen story of dowries and engagements. It’s an awkward, ill-fitting match of social progress and costume drama convention. And those 18th century conventions of speech and etiquette are often gratingly stilted in “Belle,” stifling the film of any naturalism. Instead, “Belle,” made with fine intentions, has none of the uniqueness of its remarkable subject. “Belle,” written by Misan Sagay, was inspired by a 1779 double portrait of Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray — one biracial, the other white — captured in seeming friendship. Sagay and Asante (who’s made one film before, 2004’s “Way of Life”) were intrigued by the story behind the painting. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for “thematic elements, some language and brief smoking images.” RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Neighbors"

If ever two genres of film were inextricably intertwined, it would seem to be the frat house movie and the gross-out comedy. After all, do frats ever do anything that's NOT gross? Not in the movies, they don't. "Neighbors," starring (and produced by) Seth Rogen and directed by Nicholas Stoller, proudly straddles these two genres and boldly tosses in a third: The "We've-just-becomeparents, NOW-what?" movie. You know these: Baby arrives, cute as a button but bringing ALL kinds of trouble, and then things are resolved in a syrupy sweet finale. It's safe to say that syrupy sweetness is not a problem with "Neighbors." In fact, it is noisy, crude, profane, gross, and sometimes mean. Luckily, it's also extremely funny, and you'll realize by the end that it has some heart, too. Most importantly, what it may suffer in narrative coherence it makes up for with a first-rate cast — the reliably funny Rogen, the game-for-anything Rose Byrne, and in the most pleasant surprise, a truly excellent Zac Efron as an immature, narcissistic, vindictive and, by the way, unbelievably buff frat leader whose obnoxious brio might just be masking deeper issues. (Zac, as a parent who had to watch the "High School Musical" films at least 400 times, maybe more, let me just say: I forgive you now.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout." RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Palo Alto"

The Coppola family has given us Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire and some very good wine. Gia Coppola, 27, the granddaughter of Francis and niece of Sofia, is the latest Coppola to enter the family business. "Palo Alto" is her debut, an adaptation of James Franco's book of short stories about disaffected California youth.

12

On the Edge of the Weekend

From "The Outsiders" to "The Virgin Suicides," teenage wastelands have been a Coppola specialty, whereas Schwartzman presented a more idiosyncratic portrait of teen angst in the great "Rushmore." In "Palo Alto," Gia very much takes after the soft aesthetic of Sofia ("The Bling Ring," ''Somewhere") in presenting a cluster of direction-less California teenagers backed by a mellow, synthesizer-heavy score. "Palo Alto" is rife with the stylistic clichés established by Gia's aunt and directors like Gus Van Sant. But for a first film, "Palo Alto" shows promise in its character-first storytelling and its young filmmaker's evident ease with actors. Coppola doesn't force anything on her characters, instead capturing the unthinking momentariness of youth. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and pervasive language, all involving teens." RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Million Dollar Arm"

Let's face it, there's something about a baseball movie that just invites corniness. The hardest hearts soften at the mere sound of a cracking bat. It's hard for a filmmaker to resist laying the syrup on too thick. And so it is with the Disney film "Million Dollar Arm," which makes a direct, uncomplicated, er, pitch for your heart — a pitch that will probably hit its mark, despite your best instincts telling you this movie should really be subtler at almost every turn. Oh well. Somehow, this flaw doesn't feel like the biggest crime — especially when you have a high-quality cast at work. The quality starts with Jon Hamm, who by virtue of his wellknown charisma, makes a good case for his future film career, now that his days as Don Draper on TV's "Mad Men" are sadly ending. Like Draper, Hamm's character here, the real-life sports agent JB Bernstein (the film's based on a true story), has a certain narcissism at his core. Unlike Draper, however, this isn't a deeply drawn character. Whatever faults he displays at the beginning (he prefers to date sexy models, and he wants to make money — oh no!) are pretty much neatly cured by the end. In any case, the best parts of the story are actually not about Bernstein, but about the two young Indian men he brings to America in hopes of creating the next international baseball sensation — and opening up a huge, untapped market in the world's second most populous country. Hence the title, "Million Dollar Arm," which is the contest that Bernstein devises to find his young stars. As the film begins, Bernstein and his partner Ash (the always entertaining Aasif Mandvi) are searching for ways to revive their flagging business. A failure to land a major account means they can't even pay their LA office rent. One night, though, idly channelflipping between a cricket game and Susan Boyle's famous outof-nowhere audition on "Britain's Got Talent," Bernstein comes up with the idea to find cricket players who might be able to pitch a baseball. RATEDL PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for mild language and some suggestive content." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Godzilla"

No one can blame Gareth Edwards for admittedly feeling nervous when asked to helm a remake of the biggest monster movie of all time. Sure, the only other film he had directed happened to be 2010's "Monsters." But this

May 29, 2014

time, it was Godzilla. Well, the latest iteration of the 60-year-old franchise is in capable hands. Edwards' "Godzilla" is a pleasingly paced 3-D spectacle that pays chilling homage to the artful legacy of the original 1954 film — Ishiro Honda's "Gojira" — while emerging as its own prodigious monster movie. Created as a symbol of the nuclear threat following America's atomic attacks on Japan in World War II, Godzilla's reappearance suggests the nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. in the Pacific after the war were really meant to hold the radioactive dinosaur back. This story begins in Japan in 1999 as nuclear physicist Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston, edgy in an unbearable wig) investigates questionable seismic activity at the Janjira nuclear power plant. When a team at the plant, including his scientist wife, Sandra (an underused Juliette Binoche), dies in what everyone believes is a natural disaster, Joe dedicates his life to proving that what caused the devastation was anything but natural. His obsession creates a rift between himself and his son, Ford. Fifteen years later, we catch up with Ford (played by a placid but sexy Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in San Francisco, where he lives with his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and their son. Serving in the U.S. Navy, Ford disarms bombs, a skill that later helps him save the planet from MUTOs — "Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism" — that emerge from a long dormancy and begin traveling the globe, feeding on radiation. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence. RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Words and Pictures"

If it wasn't for the charming top-liners who can make literary dialogue sound sexy in their sleep, the war in Fred Schepisi's "Words and Pictures" would have to be called off after the opening skirmish. The battlefield is a country prep school where Clive Owen's drunken English teacher and Juliette Binoche's prickly art instructor square off, then pair off, in an amusing school-wide debate over whether literature or painting is best. The way the challenge between these two sharp minds will play out is the only thing that isn't a foregone conclusion in the smooth-as-vodka screenplay, a middle-brow mashing together of "Dead Poets Society" and a rom-com for audiences allergic to vulgarity and sex scenes. The film gives Binoche, who plays Italian painter Dina Delsanto, a chance to show off her own artwork, which is liberally displayed in the film and which looks considerably better and more painterly than simple props. Working with portraiture and large-scale abstraction, she plays a famous artist struck with rheumatoid arthritis and increasingly unable to move her arms and hands freely. Her solution is to use industrial-size paint dispensers hanging from overhead hooks which she can move artistically without fine brushwork. All these difficulties more or less justify her fierce anti-social attitude, which Binoche is able to carry off without becoming an unpleasant character. Owen pulls out a surprisingly literate side of himself in the role of Jack Marcus, an irrepressibly outspoken English teacher and wordsmith who, on the verge of being ousted from the school for alcoholic disorderliness, does something repulsively unethical to save his job. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual material including nude sketches, language and some mature thematic material." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes.

Hamm's film corny but fun By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press Let's face it, there's something about a baseball movie that just invites corniness. The hardest hearts soften at the mere sound of a cracking bat. It's hard for a filmmaker to resist laying the syrup on too thick. And so it is with the Disney film "Million D o l l a r A r m , " w h i c h m a k e s a d i re c t , uncomplicated, er, pitch for your heart — a pitch that will probably hit its mark, despite your best instincts telling you this movie should really be subtler at almost every turn. Oh well. Somehow, this flaw doesn't feel like the biggest crime — especially when you have a high-quality cast at work. The quality starts with Jon Hamm, who by

virtue of his well-known charisma, makes a good case for his future film career, now that his days as Don Draper on TV's "Mad Men" are sadly ending. In any case, the best parts of the story are actually not about Bernstein, but about the two young Indian men he brings to America in hopes of creating the next international baseball sensation — and opening up a huge, untapped market in the world's second most

populous country. One night, though, idly channel-flipping between a cricket game and Susan Boyle's famous outof-nowhere audition on "Britain's Got Talent," Bernstein comes up with the idea to find cricket players who might be able to pitch a baseball. Thus begins a picturesque journey through the Indian countryside — making for director Craig Gillespie's most compelling visuals — for Bernstein and the wise-cracking,

constantly napping baseball scout he recruits, Ray (the reliably cranky Alan Arkin) and a local baseball fanatic working for free, Amit (sweetly played by the comic actor Pitobash.) Most of the young men they find can't pitch worth a darn. But ultimately they come across Dinesh (the handsome Madhur Mittal, of "Slumdog Millionaire") and Rinku (the soulful Suraj Sharma, who starred in "Life of Pi.") Neither is actually a cricket player. But no matter — they can throw. Back in Los Angeles, Bernstein gets to work setting up a Major League tryout, hiring a canny baseball coach (Bill Paxton) to get the boys ready in the impossible time frame of several months — a demand of their financial backer — despite the fact that they've barely touched a baseball and don't even know what the glove's for.

Allen shines in "Fading Gigolo" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Though I'm well known as a fan of Woody Allen's films, it doesn't often come up that I also get a kick out of his acting. He's a one note performer. He's all nervous and uncomfortable, fending off the idea of flop sweat with quick jokes that maybe aren't so much funny as they are clever. There's a lot here that I can relate to. The same cannot be said for Mr. Allen's supporting role in "Fading Gigolo," a film that he neither wrote nor directed. It focuses on some life skills that aren't distributed amongst too much of the population. Murray Schwartz (Allen) owned a vintage book shop that focused on rare findings until he couldn't

make a go of it anymore. It seems that this business was much more in demand during the days when his father and grandfather ran things. The quick-witted Murray now spends his days babysitting for the neighbor lady (Tonya Pinkins) and hanging out with his good buddy, Fioravante (John Turturro). Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the famously Italian Turturro goes Spanish for his starring turn in this film that he both wrote and directed. Fioravante is a thinking man. He's patient and often quiet. His trade skills range from plumber to horticulturist. I know they are just props, but many of the flower arrangements Turturro works with in this film are quite lovely. Also, the films soundtrack is amazing. Just thought I'd throw that in here.

One day a unique offer falls into Murray's lap. His wealthy and attractive dermatologist (Sharon Stone) asks him if he knows anyone that she and a girlfriend (Sofia Vergara) might hire for a ménage a trois. Of course baffled by the proposition, Murray puts forth Fioravante's name and then begins a series of justifications to his friend for how being a modern day gigolo could solve their money problems. Murray would be his manager for a slice of the dough, naturally. After a first "date" with the sexy skin doctor, Fioravante finds that he's naturally good at his new job. And why not? It most involves listening to women when they want to talk and then challenging them to be better people in ways they don't even realize he's teaching them. The sex

is almost an afterthought for him. Fioravante and Murray cement their new venture by taking the professional names of Virgil Howard and Dan Bongo, respectively. I don't necessarily find these inspiring, but the scene where they debate it was a riot. In fact, the first half of this film is a so funny that I laughed out loud numerous times. Turturro takes a page out of Allen's filmmaking guide and uses much the same type of humor that the famous director is known for. The fast jab dialogue. The awkward situational comedy. The Jewish in-jokes (they live in a fully Orthodox Brooklyn neighborhood). One line where Murray mistakes "acidic" for "Hassidic" knocked me for such a loop I almost had to step out of the auditorium I was

May 29, 2014

laughing so hard. It all gets messy - and much more serious - for Virgil and Bongo when they try to bring a little light into the sad world of a widow on their street. Avigal (Vanessa Paradis) grieves still for her two years gone husband and they look to help her find happiness again by experiencing the love of a man. Intimacy is off the table for a woman of her religious virtues, but Virgil has a knack for finding exactly what it is that will make each lady feel better about herself and her lot in life. He's a hero... even if Bongo steals most of the show. "Fading Gigolo" runs 95 minutes and is rated R for some sexual content, language, and brief nudity. I give this film three stars out of four.

Remembering the struggle

The National Civil Rights Museum located in Memphis, Tenn., re-opened its doors after a nearly two year closure for renovations totaling $27.5 million. My family and I took the opportunity to take a weekend trip to Memphis and attend the grand re-opening. The newly designed exhibits and interactive displays, including 40 new films and listening posts, a replica of the courtroom where the U.S. Supreme Court heard the Brown v. Board of Education case, and a large March on Washington exhibit with life-size statues of marchers holding protest signs, give viewers a highly emotional feeling of being immersed in the history and experiences of the civil rights struggle in America. The museum re-opened April 5, 2014, the day after the 46th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in Memphis on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. The motel was then later converted into the museum. One display that remained untouched, was Room 306, where King stayed in what were to be his last days, ending in an assassination by James Earl Ray. Toward the end of the museum is the Join the Movement table, which asks questions to see where you stand on popular issues today and encourages you to take action. Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, the Italia frittata with bacon and fresh fruit. Below, the exterior of Cafe Indigo.

Breakfast in Iowa at Cafe Indigo By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge To be honest, breakfast is a meal I don't have the pleasure of eating in restaurants very often. It's basically because I'm not much of a morning person and kind of grouchy, so I don't feel it's a good idea to unleash myself on the world. But during the postseason run for the Edwardsville Tiger boys' basketball team this season I found myself doing some hotel living and thought it was as good a time as any to do a "You Gotta Eat" breakfast style. My place of choice, Café Indigo in Davenport, Iowa. After watching the Tigers win a sectional championship and spending a wonderful night in the La Quinta Inn in East Moline, I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone, visit Iowa for the first time in my life and get a breakfast food review. Online reviews had Café Indigo looking like the place to be, so I decided to make that my destination — I wasn't disappointed. Established in 2007, Café Indigo has become a stable in Davenport. From its eclectic menu to its lively and eclectic color scheme in its dining area, Café Indigo is a fun place to eat. With separate breakfast, lunch and dinner menus available, there is plenty to choose from. Like I said, for my purposes I attacked the breakfast menu. Late on a Saturday morning, there was plenty of business on my visit. I actually had to wait a few minutes to be seated. Once seated, I got a chance to look at the unique menu at Café Indigo. From breakfast sandwiches, to breakfast entrées, various breakfast items and a frittatas and omelettes portion of the menu, there were plenty of choices. I decided to go with the Italian frittata. This was my first frittata experience. Those of you that don't know what a frittata is, it is an Italian dish comparable to an omelette or a

crustless quiche. Frittata derives from an Italian word that roughly translates to egg-cake. Slightly different from an omelette, a frittata isn't folded over its internal ingredients, instead the ingredients are mixed with the raw, beaten eggs, cooked on low heat on the underside and then either flipped to cook the top or more commonly baked for at least five minutes to create a crisp top. At Café Indigo the frittatas are baked. The Italian frittata, which I chose, consisted of four eggs with mushrooms, spinach, asiago cheese, artichokes and was topped with a roasted red pepper pesto. I'm kind of a sucker for pesto, so this was a key ingredient for me. My first frittata experience was definitely a success. It had a savory taste, different from an omelette or a breakfast skillet. I would compare it more to a quiche in taste. The crispiness from having it baked was very apparent, but then consistency-wise it was still closer to an omelette.

With the variety of ingredients, my Italian frittata was very memorable. There were plenty of spinach, mushrooms and artichokes to fill up every bite and the sweetness of the asiago and the pesto made for a great change of pace in taste. The Italian frittata also came with a side, your choice of either fresh fruit or hash brown casserole. I ordered the hash brown casserole, but when my entrée arrived it was accompanied by the cup of fruit. I informed my server and he quickly apologized, left the fruit and brought me the hash brown casserole for no extra charge. It was the right move in terms of customer service and left me with additional food, which is always a bonus in my book. The fruit consisted of pineapple, cantaloupe and honey dew melon. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of cantaloupe or honey dew melon, so I picked out the pineapple and left the rest. What I didn't leave was any of the hash brown casserole. Baked to

a golden brown with a plethora of cheese, this memorable dish was so good the thought crossed my mind to pick up the bowl and lick the bottom of it clean, but then I remembered I was in public and needed to mind my manners. The cheese on the top was crusted over, creating a cocoon to encase the hash browns and keep them tender and juicy. Maybe there wasn't too much to this dish in the way of culinary creativity, but sometimes the basics are enough. On top of all of this I also couldn't resist and added a side order of bacon to my meal. It's hard for me to pass up bacon when it is available. As for the rest of the breakfast menu, there were some pretty unique finds. There is the pretzel sandwich, consisting of sautéed green onions, sausage and sun dried tomatoes with eggs and topped with pepper jack cheese on toasted pretzel bread. The Andy's breakfast burger includes an eight ounce indigo black peppered burger topped with two eggs over

May 29, 2014

medium, sautéed onions, blue cheese, bacon and roasted red pepper pesto on a toasted kaiser bun. There was also the open faced monte cristo with sautéed ham and turkey piled on a slice of vanilla cinnamon French toast, topped with Swiss cheese and one egg sunny side up with your choice of fresh fruit or cheesy hash brown casserole. One other selection that caught my eye (or stomach) was the andouille sausage bake made with pan fried hash browns, sautéed peppers, onions and andouille sausage topped with a cheese blend, baked and topped with two eggs over medium and pico de gallo. If you make it later in the day for lunch or dinner, there are some other quirky choices at Café Indigo, too. The crab cake burger slider jumps out on the lunch menu. It includes a pan fried crab cake served on a bed of mixed greens, spicy ranch aioli with tomatoes and sprouts on a ciabatta bun. There's also the turkey apple wrap, consisting of roasted turkey with black peppercorn sage mayo, provolone cheese, bacon, granny smith apples and romaine lettuce in a tortilla shell. On the dinner menu, there are selections like the baked goat cheese cake, consisting of a warm goat cheese cake with sautéed swiss chard, balsamic reduction and diced tomatoes. There's also a pan seared red snapper available and a pan seared duck breast to name a couple other choices. Adult beverages are available at Café Indigo also, including the popular winetinis and some craft beer selections. Price-wise, my breakfast was $14.70 before a tip, so a little pricey for breakfast, but the frittata was $8.99 itself. Most selections were in the $7-9 range. As for everything else, the service was friendly, the atmosphere was cool and the food was really good, so if you're ever passing through Davenport, Iowa, check out Café Indigo when you gotta eat.
