Located along the Great River Road in Grafton, Ill., the 28-acre waterpark continues to provide families from all across the region with unbeatable prices, endless excitement and cool waters during the hot summer days. The season began on Saturday, May 28, when Raging Rivers opened for another fun-filled summer. “Raging Rivers is our mini oasis offering an excellent and affordable option for families to spend the day or make a weekend out of their visit and get away from it all,” states Donna Smith, general manager of Raging Rivers WaterPark. “Our team is excited to welcome families and friends as they make memories all summer long enjoying all the park has to offer, from the thrill of our rides to relaxing in our cabanas.” Raging Rivers provides guests with entertainment enjoyable for individuals of all ages. Park goers can challenge their daring side through the 500-foot dual Cascade Body Flumes, which gives riders a rush as they speed, twist and turn down the natural hills and contours of the park. Visitors looking for a more relaxing experience can float along at a tranquil 2 ½ mile per hour pace in a continuous 700-footlong Endless River of cool, clear

Zoo to celebrate pollinators For The Edge One out of every three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators. Honeybees, bumblebees and other insects, birds and small mammals pollinate over 90 percent of the planet's flowering plants and one third of human food crops. June 20-26, 2016, has been declared “National Pollinator Week” to recognize the importance of pollinators for the health of ecosystems as well as our own survival. During this week, the Saint Louis Zoo’s Monsanto Insectarium will host keeper chats and demonstrations on attracting bees to gardens, identifying different types of bees, beekeeping and more. Cafe Kudu will offer daily specials featuring food provided by pollinators. The Zoo is offering a special “Pollinator Dinner” on Tuesday, June 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. in The Living World at the Zoo. Guest speaker for the evening is Dr. Laura Jackson, Director of the Tallgrass P r a i r i e C e n t e r a n d P ro f e s s o r of Biology at the University of Northern Iowa. Her research has focused on the restoration of biological diversity in agriculture landscapes and the process of seedling establishment in tallgrass prairie restoration. Her talk will be “Crossing the Corn-Bean Desert: Prospects for Restoring Pollinator Habitat on a Meaningful Scale,” which will explore the farm as a natural habitat and ways to re c o n n e c t f o o d s y s t e m s w i t h ecosystems. The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with a honey tasting, informational booths and cash bar serving honey bourbon, honey beer and hard cider. The farm-to-table-inspired gourmet dinner buffet includes salads, sides, main courses and desserts with ingredients provided by pollinators and will feature locally sourced produce from EarthDance Farms and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds

and dishes based on the United Nation’s declaration of 2016 as the International Year of Pulses (plant species members of the pea family, including kidney beans, navy beans, chickpeas, black-eyed peas, and lentils). Reservations are $31.50 for adults and $20 for children ages 12 and under. Reservations can be made by calling (314) 646-4897 by noon on June 13. Advanced registration required. See menu and more information at stlzoo.org/ PollinatorDinner. Proceeds benefit the Zoo. Pollinator Conservation The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Center for Native Pollinator Conservation focuses on the importance and diversity of native pollinators for the maintenance and survival of

wildlife, ecosystems and agriculture. The activities of the Center include surveys of native bee populations, education and outreach programs, producing the first guide to the Bumble Bees of Illinois and Missouri with the University of Illinois, and developing additional bee field guides. Bee surveys are being conducted in the St. Louis area to examine bee diversity and abundance and identify possible areas of conservation concern. Zoo researchers are also surveying bee populations in Forest Park's restored prairies in cooperation with Forest Park Forever and St. Louis Parks Department. The Center is collaborating with Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri Department of Transportation and the Xerces Society to develop P o l l i n a t o r R o a d s i d e g a rd e n s
within Missouri and is working with Gateway Greening and other community garden groups to help them develop best pollinator practices and educate the public about the importance of protecting pollinators. There are over 20,000 species of bees in the world and 425 species of bees in Missouri alone. That is more than all species of birds and mammals put together, according to Ed Spevak, Curator of Invertebrates at the Zoo and Director of the Center for Native Pollinator Conservation. “Many of the more than 4,000 native bees in North America are actually far better pollinators than honey bees for crops like alfalfa, clover, tomatoes, peppers, blueberries, squashes and more,” said Spevak. “But more importantly,
they are invaluable to the functioning of many habitats and to the birds and other animals that feed on the seeds, nuts and fruits from the labors of these pollinators. Unfortunately, a number of native bees are disappearing. Everyone from local homeowners to farmers to conservationists can help the bees as well as other pollinators by growing a wildflower garden, protecting habitat and reducing our use of pesticides and herbicides. Everyone can participate in their conservation.” The Saint Louis Zoo’s website now offers directions on how to build bee nesting boxes, in addition to tips on how to plant pollinator gardens and identification guides for Missouri and Illinois bees. Religion Religion briefs Speaker defends nuns over birth control mandate
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Paul Ryan says the Obama administration's treatment of the Little Sisters of the Poor "has shown a total misunderstanding of faith." A t t h e N a t i o n a l C a t h o l i c P r a y e r B re a k f a s t , Ry a n criticized the accommodation the Obama administration offered the nuns and other faith-based groups that object to providing birth control through their health insurance, even if they don't have to pay for it. Ryan said the nuns "should not have to participate in any way," even if it's only by submitting a government form stating their religious objection. Faith-based groups have said that still makes them complicit in something they believe is sinful. Ryan said the Obama administration "seems to believe only in a material world where the only stuff that matters is dollars and cents." Jordan Brown of Austin issued an apology on Monday, saying he was "wrong to pursue this matter and use the media to perpetuate this story." Whole Foods vigorously denied the allegation when Brown first came forward in April. The Austin American-Statesman reports that the company released surveillance video that it said showed Brown was lying and filed a counter suit against him. The company said in a statement Monday that given Brown's apology and public admission that his story was false, it sees "no reason" to move forward with its lawsuit.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The son of the Rev. Billy Graham is urging Missouri's Christians to run for office and support candidates who adhere to biblical principles. Franklin Graham delivered his message Tuesday as thousands rallied in the rain outside the state Capitol. Some attendees stepped onto ledges outside lawmakers' office windows to get a better view. Graham made Jefferson City the 23rd stop of his 50-State Decision America Tour. He compared Christians' struggle against secularism to America's fight against communism. He said Christians might have to hold their nose during some elections and choose the lesser of two "heathens." He said in those cases, voters should look for the candidate who will at least listen to Christians on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage.

"A Bigger Splash"
A craggy, stormy volcanic island off Sicily. Some fabulous real estate. A little food porn. Tilda Swinton's face, and Ralph Fiennes' — well, a lot more than his face. What more could a film buff want? To be fair, "A Bigger Splash," by director Luca Guadagnino, has an uneven feel. For 90 minutes it floats along as a relaxed exploration of four quirky characters — attractive, lustful, bored, somewhat confused — and the shifting ties that bind them, carnally and otherwise. Then, suddenly and shockingly, it turns into a psychological thriller for the last half hour. It's a shift in tone that feels uneasy and a little forced. But by then, you've been lulled into a second-glass-of-wine feeling — perhaps a result of watching those lazy, al fresco meals overlooking the sea. Your defenses are down, and you're ready to flow with it until the end, even though you have a feeling you're going to be left a little unsatisfied. The setting is the Sicilian island of Pantelleria near Tunisia, where Marianne (Swinton) and her boyfriend of six years, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are staying in a sprawling home atop rocky cliffs, with a nice swimming pool (the film is a reworking of the French New Wave classic "La Piscine," which should give aforementioned film buffs a sense of where things are headed). Marianne is a rock star not unlike David Bowie — a role that fits the pale, androgynous, chameleon-like Swinton to a T — who is recovering from vocal cord surgery and not allowed to speak. This means that for most of the film, Swinton lacks one of an actor's chief instruments: the voice. This challenge also suits Swinton to a T; in fact, it was her own idea to render Marianne virtually speechless, jettisoning dialogue originally planned for her. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for graphic nudity, some strong sexual content, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: hree stars out of four.
"The Lobster"
Does anything break through the glum satire and unremitting deadpan that cover "The Lobster" like the gray Irish skies that hover over it? Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos' first English-language film begins with a distraught woman driving through the rain. She gets out on a remote plain, walks up to a donkey and shoots it right in the face. It's a brutal announcement of the absurdity to come. This is a film for neither lovers nor animal lovers. In "The Lobster," a "Saturday Night Live" sketch carried out with the severity of Antonioni, singlehood is outlawed. The lonely and divorced are rounded up in white vans and brought to a country resort where they have 45 days to meet a mate or they will then be turned into an animal of their choosing. The questions at check-in go like this: "Have you ever been on your own before? Are you allergic to any foods?" Rules include that volleyball and tennis courts are reserved for couples only, and that crossbreeding species — a wolf and a penguin, a camel and a hippo — isn't allowed. "That would be absurd," says the hotel manager (Olivia Colman). The style here is at once gleefully bonkers and grimly banal. Though "The Lobster" has been called a dystopia, there are no fantastical elements besides its extreme conceit, a savage parody of our coupling obsession. At the hotel, people pair off based on only the most superficial commonalities like robotic Tinder users. John C. Reilly is identified only as the Lisping Man; Ben Wishaw as the Limping Man. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content including dialogue, and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Love & Friendship"
It was the comedy, not the romance, in Jane Austen's work that drew writer-director Whit Stillman to her unfinished novella "Lady Susan." Stillman spent years adapting the collection of letters into "Love & Friendship," a talky tale centered on the manipulative, self-serving ways of an attractive young widow. Romance is but a trifle for Lady Susan Vernon, considered "the most accomplished flirt in all England," and her callousness breeds comedy, briskly delivered here in stylized language. The wit comes so quickly, the film demands a second viewing. The heartlessness of the central character, though, makes that option unappealing. It's a testament to the performance, writing and direction, and she should be so odious, but sometimes hanging out with a sociopath can be a drag. "Love & Friendship" (the title borrowed from a different Austen story) reunites the stars of Stillman's 1998 film, "The Last Days of Disco." Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny again play friends obsessed with relationships and reputation, except this story takes place at least 100 years earlier (Austen's novella was set in 1790). Sevigny is Alicia Johnson, the only remaining friend of the elegant, unscrupulous Lady Susan, played by Beckinsale, commanding and effortless in every scene. In opulent costumes by Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh and a mountainous tumble of curls, Beckinsale's Lady Susan is immaculate in her appearance and delivery of Stillman's wellcrafted prose. She leads an ensemble cast that includes Jemma Redgrave, Tom Bennett, Xavier Samuel, Morfydd Clark and Stephen Fry. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements." RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Money Monster"
George Clooney plays a Jim Cramer-like television personality who's forced to grow a conscience when a disgruntled viewer holds him hostage on live TV in "Money Monster," a serviceable, if slight, real time thriller from director Jodie Foster. Clooney's character Lee Gates is one of those cable news stars who probably hasn't spoken to a non-celebrity in decades. His flashy show opens with him in dancing in costume with two gyrating ladies at his side like he's in his own rap video, and the vulgarity just escalates from there with ridiculous graphics and sound effects that even a shock jock radio host would likely find tasteless. We see him being dismissive of the pleas from his put-upon producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) to stick to the script, or at least give her a heads up as to where he's planning to go, but Lee Gates is one of those roguish improvisational types who is somehow charismatic enough to get away with it. This is not really a likable guy, and it's not even clear how smart a financial mind he is, but Clooney has that perfect combination of nonthreatening smarm and swagger to make Lee not completely reprehensible. It does, however, make it a little hard to care when Jack O'Connell's character Kyle comes skulking in through the back of the set with a gun and a vest full of explosives made especially for Lee. Kyle, we find out, trusted Lee's advice on an investment that went awry when a stable company's stock plummeted and he lost everything. The company's explanation and the narrative in the press is that it was just a computer glitch, but Kyle's not buying it and wants some answers. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, some sexuality and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising"
Heaven help the next generation of American women if "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" represents what Hollywood thinks of them. In Nicholas Stoller's sequel to his 2014 "Neighbors," even the with-it girls — the ones too freethinking to join a cookie-cutter sorority — are so dumb they make the bros in the first movie look like elder statesmen. Smarts aren't the point, of course — the reason these freshmen strike out on their own, renting a house next to Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, is that they hunger for their very own place to get stoned. But in their awkward attempt to shoehorn these kids into the first pic's formula, Stoller and his writing collaborators care far less about creating believable characters than getting to the next laugh. Those yuks are plentiful enough to ensure a reasonable boxoffice return. But viewers prone to worries about Hollywood's treatment of women — a fair chunk of whom are young students this film wants to attract — may be laughing less loudly than those around them. In an uncharacteristically flat performance, Chloe Grace Moretz plays Shelby, who doesn't fit the Barbie mold at the sorority she's rushing, Phi Lambda. She sticks with rush even after learning that sororities can't host their own parties, and must go to frat houses to get wasted. But at her first such party, the rapey vibe is so intense (is a "No Means Yes!" banner perhaps too subtle a clue?) she and new friends Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein) decide to start their own club. The search for a party house to call their own leads them to the vacant home next door to Mac and Kelly Radner (Rogen & Byrne), who successfully ran Zac Efron and his crew out in the last picture. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "crude sexual content including brief graphic nudity, language throughout, drug use and teen partying." RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes.
"The Nice Guys"
Take two charismatic actors. Give them characters that are, on the surface, totally incompatible. Plunk them into your basic whodunit, a mismatched team fighting fill-in-the-blank bad guys. Stir in some shoot-em-up action, and poof: You have a buddy cop movie, one of the most durable formulas in Hollywood. Now, technically, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe don't play cops in "The Nice Guys," by writer-director Shane Black (who knows a thing about buddy cop movies, having written "Lethal Weapon" back in 1987.) One's a bumbling private investigator, the other a low-life hired enforcer. But the equation's the same, and like a buddy-cop movie (or a porn film — more on that later) the important thing isn't the plot. It's the chemistry. Gosling and Crowe do have chemistry, and an obvious sense of humor which gets them far. They'd have gotten farther, though, if the movie, while at times hilarious, didn't have such an uneven feel, particularly a nasty edge that simply clashes with the desired jocular tone. Yes, there's such a thing as dark comedy, but this is a comedy that occasionally just makes you feel queasy. There were moments I knew I was supposed to be laughing but found myself scribbling in my notes: "hmm, funny but not?" Then again, there are some inspired moments, such as when enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe, paunchy and amiably violent) tracks down Holland March (Gosling — sweet, clumsy, effortlessly funny ) in a men's room stall. March is understandably wary, considering Healy had broken his arm at their last meeting, leaving him howling on the kitchen floor like a wounded cat. RATED:R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence, sexuality, nudity, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

But at her first such party, the rapey vibe is so intense (is a "No Means Yes!" banner perhaps too subtle a clue?) she and
new friends Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein) decide to start their own club. The search for a party house to call their own leads them to the vacant home next door to Mac and Kelly Radner (Rogen & Byrne), who successfully ran Zac Efron and his crew out in the last picture. But how will three girls pay the $5,000 rent? Enter an unlikely mentor: Efron's Teddy Sanders, whose bros have done an astonishing amount of growing up in the two years since we saw them (and, in the case of Dave Franco's Pete, come out of the closet). Mac and Kelly, getting set to have a second child, have just managed to sell this house and buy a bigger one in the suburbs. But this one is in escrow, with the new owners having 30
days to make random inspections and back out for any reason. Reasons like, say, a yard full of beer cans next door. Teddy, looking to get even with his old neighbors (let's forget they actually patched things up after the last movie's parents-vs.fratboys warfare), sets out to host parties so outlandish no prospective homebuyer could ignore them. But as they come into their own as party animals, the girls give Teddy the heave-ho, saying the most hurtful thing a low-IQ stud like this could hear: "You're not like us, dude, you're an old person." Teddy rebounds by joining Mac and Kelly in their attempt to shut the sorority down. The ensuing back-and-forth assault is often funny, but doesn't work nearly as well as the first film's action.
"The Nice Guys" worth a look By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge “The Nice Guys” is a nice throwback to a dirtier time. It’s set in and around 1970s Hollywood, a setting that writer-director Shane Black is familiar with in both his work and his life. The look and t exture a re f a n t a s t i c a n d t h e comedy is what sets this actioncomedy apart from many other movies that we’re seeing in release right now. Billboards for “Jaws 2” and Tim Allen’s headlining name on The Comedy Store’s marquee could give you almost the exact date when this movie takes place. L.A. is the opposite of Las Vegas, where nothing ever stays the same for too long. The buddy concept of two mismatched private detectives working together on the same case
(but initially from opposite ends) is clever, but the casting of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe into these roles is something good for both actors. Neither is much like the other roles they’ve played and yet feel realistic and true to their spirits as performers. The movie has much in common with Black’s earlier works (the “Lethal Weapon” series) and his fantastic 2005 Val Kilmer/Robert Downey, Jr. farce “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang”, for which he adapted the screenplay. Jackson Healy (Crowe) is a more brutal investigator than Holland March (Gosling). He’s the heavy, both in action and in appearance, played as a thug by the thicker version of Crowe that exists nowadays. Brass knuckles and make-good threats are the hallmark of his business, which
he proudly advertises as one where he’ll beat people up for the right price. March is more of a traditional P.I., using surveillance, varying degrees of street smarts, and pounding the pavement to actually, you know, investigate things. Neither is necessarily a nice guy or even a legitimate business person. They’re clearly in it for a buck until the work turns personal and they quickly roll up their polyester sleeves and take in on the chin. Healy will be nobody’s fool; March has a tiny sense of pride from having reared a bright and articulate child (Angourie Rice, stealer of most of her scenes). Together, they try to find Amelia (Margaret Qualley), a mysterious girl wanted by both her mother (Kim Basinger) and the mafia – possibly for the same reasons –
in connection with the death of a high-profile adult film star named Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio). While searching the city for Amelia, forced together by dumb luck and not enough sense to go it alone, Healy and March find themselves in over their heads almost from the beginning. Scuzzy Los Angeles keeps beating them down with quirky characters like Amelia’s protest group and her neighbors, but also thwarting their advancement by keeping them in bind after bind as they avoid political enforcer types (Beau Knapp and Keith David) and an assassin nicknamed John Boy (a creepy Matt Bomer), who also wants to get his hands on Amelia. The gunfights are a little lackadaisical, but it fits within the overall tone of the picture.

I like movies that portray Hollywood – for good or for bad – either realistically or as I idealize it in my head. “The Nice Guys” isn’t as romantic as “Singin’ in the Rain” or as noir as “L.A. Confidential” (though it comes close, especially with the Basinger connection). It’s pulp fiction in a way that’s finer than “Pulp Fiction” could ever hope to be. Come for the comedy, stay for the crass behavior and the underhanded methods of those that support the glamorous lifestyle of our favorite celebrities and the cops, crooks, and politicians that hang on for dear life to them. “The Nice Guys” runs 116 minutes and is rated R for violence, sexuality, nudity, language, and brief drug use. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

For The Edge CAM (Contemporary Art Museum) presents the seventh edition of the Great Rivers Biennial featuring new work by St. Louisbased artists Lyndon Barrois Jr., Nanette Boileau, and Tate Foley. The Great Rivers Biennial Arts Award Program, a collaborative initiative between CAM and Gateway Foundation, identifies talented emerging and mid-career artists working in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, providing them with a $20,000 honorarium and a major exhibition at CAM. T h re e d i s t i n g u i s h e d j u ro r s — Anne Ellegood, Senior Curator at the Hammer Museum; Valerie Cassel Oliver, Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum H o u s t o n ; a n d P a u l P f e i f f e r, sculptor, photographer, and video artist—selected the 2016 winners from more than 80 submissions. The exhibit runs now through Aug. 14. Lyndon Barrois Jr. Through a multi-disciplinary practice including installation, painting, and sculpture, Lyndon Barrois Jr. examines questions of aesthetic value, race and representation, and the creation of meaning through imagery in popular culture. Of Color situates eight life-size assemblages— composed of cropped images of athletes, fashion models, and domestic objects culled from magazines—on an asphalt basketball court. By repositioning this outdoor setting within the protected space of the Museum, the artist asks viewers to consider how people, cultures, and lifestyles typically sited on the periphery can gain visibility in a new context. The Arts New exhibit open at Edwardsville Arts Center By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge “Multiplicity: The use of repetition in contemporary art” is the next exhibit planned at the Edwardsville Arts Center. Curated by the EAC's Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball, the exhibit opened p.m. on May 27 and will run through June 17. Tidball elaborated about the concept of multiples and how artists use it in their work. “Multiples meaning making or using a lot of small parts that are the same and creating something that's bigger – using those little pieces,” she explained. “And sometimes that means that it will create the illusion of something totally different than what the small pieces are made of or it's about the grouping of pieces that are similar or it's about the process of making something over and over. So there's a lot of different reasons that artists will make multiples rather than just one stand alone piece.” “It's always just been interesting to me to see the different ways that people work in a series,” Tidball added about her interest in multiples. “I just personally know a lot of artists who work in multiples.” The artists that will be featured in the “Multiplicity: The use of repetition in contemporary art” upcoming exhibit will include Zach Balousek, Brad Brewer, Kahlil Irving, Jenna Smith, Kelsie Ward and Tidball. Tidball provided some insight into the work of a few of the artists beginning with Balousek whose piece in the exhibit is quite large. “He had done some work a couple of years ago with packing peanuts. He casted in clay packing peanuts – probably thousands of them individually. He had this whole
amazing system set up for making these packing peanuts,” Tidball recalled. She elaborated about Balousek's piece stating that the clay packing peanuts are situated inside a large crate. “You can see the packing peanuts inside the crate, but they are also billowing out of the crate as if it were an object being packed up and transported somewhere,” Tidball said. “So it's about this idea that these massed produced materials like packing peanuts, bubble wrap and stuff like that we use - that it is something we discard and throw away like it's nothing, but that stuff lasts forever. It's this idea of like we're moving and we're going to throw it away, but these packing peanuts are made of clay just like how real packing peanuts are made of Styrofoam and are going to last forever.” “It's an amazing large piece that when you stand in front of it, it's almost intimidating it's so big. It's kind of overwhelming,” Tidball added. “So I think he gets his point across that these things are permanent and yet we use them so wastefully.” Tidball also felt that Balousek's piece had a little to do with “transitions in life.” “How we move from one thing to another so quickly but really everything impacts us along the way. At least that's what I take away from it,” she said. “So there's like two aspects of it that work on a kind of global economy of scale but also a personal level.” Brewer's contribution to the exhibit is a series of jars that he made for functional purposes. “Multiples are so important in pottery,” Tidball stressed. “When a potter throws cups, they throws tons of them at a time. It's not so much always about making a lot of work. It's about learning from
each piece, and it becomes sort of a meditative process. Making one cup after another and focusing on each one individually, but then seeing them as a group together in the end has sort of a different impact than just one individual one.” Ward, a recent MFA graduate from SIUE, is another artist who will be displaying work in the exhibit. Ward works in resin and other materials, but the piece she's planning to display in the exhibit is made of resin and vinyl. “Kelsie is inspired by rock formations and geology. She has taken a trip to Iceland that was really inspiring to her, and she has these locations in the world that she thinks about constantly when she's making work and they sort of work through her hands into the pieces she's making,” Tidball said. “It's interesting to see how she's so meditative on some interesting formation and the way it comes through in her work. She'll often make a series of little rock pieces – small and large – that come together to create almost like an environment in the gallery.” “The thing I know that Kelsie really finds interesting about multiples and really exciting to work with, is that each time you
install her pieces, it's different,” Tidball pointed out. “So like this gallery show is going to be different from any time that she's shown this piece before in a different gallery because this space is different. She'll set it up differently. It might have a different feeling – is it by a window, is it on a flat wall somewhere, is it in a corner. So each time she displays her work in a different space it becomes a different piece. I know that that really resonates with her working with multiples.” Tidball not only is curating the exhibit, but will be participating in it as well. “I'm actually a little bit new to multiples, but it's been an idea that I started exploring toward at the end of my time at SIUE and I've been wanting to get back into but just haven't had the time to be making bigger sculptural work.” She explained that multiples, for her, were about forms that she'd revisit over and over again whether it was in pottery, sculpture or drawing. “Usually they are connected to nature - to plants or flowers and are forms that I find interesting like cone shapes, spiral shapes, leaf like shapes, stems – things that I like for whatever reason. They just interest me,”
Tidball noted. “So working in multiples for me has been sort of an investigation into those forms that attract me, and I'm also interested in the way that that one thing that I find interesting looks different when it's exploded into a bigger idea or object.” Working in multiples is not about the end product for Tidball. It's more about the process in getting to the end product. “In making these pieces in the last few months, I haven't really known what they were going to become, but I've been trusting my instincts,” Tidball said. “That's really how art has gone for me my whole life. I just pick something that I like and I trust myself, and I go for it and see what happens. So it's exciting to see the way that a piece develops without really knowing what the end product is going to be.” “Multiplicity: The use of repetition in contemporary art” exhibit opens May 27 and runs through June 17 at the EAC located at 6165 Center Grove Road in Edwardsville. The Dennis DeToye Student Gallery will concurrently feature the artwork of both the EAC adult dropin art classes as well as the kids' free Saturday art classes.

The Saint Louis Art Museum is hosting a new exhibit, The Carpet and the Connoisseur. During the early 20th century, St. Louis businessman James F. Ballard became one of the country’s top collectors of Oriental carpets. An unlikely collector, he was celebrated for his approach to collecting Anatolian carpets from provincial centers in Turkey at a time when most other rug connoisseurs were acquiring the classical Persian and Indian carpets. In addition to his passion for collecting, Ballard was also a patient teacher, inveterate traveler, and, above all, the first Oriental carpet enthusiast to acknowledge the importance of Turkish influence on the history of the pile carpet. Ballard ultimately divided his collection of carpets between The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1922 and the Saint Louis Art

Museum in 1929. Another group of carpets were added to the St. Louis collection through a later donation by his daughter, Nellie Ballard White, in 1972. As a result of these two gifts, the Museum has amassed a collection of Oriental rugs recognized as one of the most significant collections in the world. The Carpet and the Connoisseur will highlight 51 carpets from the Ballard collection, including three Cairene rugs, a Spanish rug, and examples of “Lotto and small-pattern “Holbein carpets, all important examples of works f ro m t h e l a t e - 1 5 t h a n d 1 6 t h centuries. Ballard also acquired two 19th-century Persian pleasure tents that were used for outdoor gatherings. These are also featured in the exhibition. The Carpet and the Connoisseur is guest-curated by Walter B. Denny, University of Massachusetts distinguished professor in Islamic Arts in collaboration with Philip Hu, associate curator of Asian art, and textile conservator Zoe Perkins. This exhibition of selected works from the Museum's collection explores how real and imagined landscapes in Chinese art are seen within paintings as well as threedimensional objects. Works in the exhibition include two hanging scrolls bearing titles that refer to actual named places: The Taibo Wine Pavilion at Caishi Rock by Miao Song and Elegant Gathering at the Poetry Niche, a collaborative work by Fa Shishan and his friends. Gathering of the Immortals by Wang Wending depicts the birthday celebration of the Daoist deity Queen Mother of the West in a garden of lotus, plantain, and exotic flowering plants. These screens present symbols of longevity, and were painted in honor of the 60th birthday of the Li family matriarch Madame Chen. Other works in the exhibition that interpret landscapes through visual imagination include the hanging scroll by Wan Shanglin with scenery that arouses a sense of tranquility, and two porcelain barrelform garden seats decorated with peacocks in landscape settings. works by self-taught artists. These modern and contemporary artistic visionaries expressed distinct and unorthodox creativity, and were active participants in shaping American visual culture. As selftaught geniuses they influenced generations of artists and established lively artistic traditions, from post-
Revolutionary times to today. Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, Self-Taught Genius was brought to the Saint Louis Art Museum by M. Melissa Wolfe, curator of American art. The exhibition will travel to the Tampa Museum of Art after its presentation in St. Louis.
The Saint Louis Art Museum will host an exhibit titled Self-Taught Genius from June 19 through Sept. 11, in the Main Exhibition Galleries, East Building Self-Taught Genius explores the continuum of American folk art through the concept of a “self-taught genius, an enduring term that has changed dramatically over time. Music Tuning in Stapleton to appear at The Fox
Chris Stapleton boldly introduced himself to the public at-large in 2015 with the release of his breakthrough debut album, Traveller. Released in May on Mercury Records Nashville, Traveller initially debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart with more than 27,000 albums sold, making it one of the bestselling first weeks by a debut country artist in 2015. The album also received extensive critical acclaim and has landed him bookings on multiple national TV shows including recent appearances on Saturday Night Live and CBS News Sunday Morning. Stapleton will appear at the Fox Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $79.50, $59.50, $54.50, $49.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Following a historic turn on the CMA Awards—where Stapleton became the first artist to win Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the same awards— Traveller became the first album to re-enter the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart at No. 1, where it stayed for two straight weeks. T h e b re a k t h ro u g h s u c c e s s continued earlier this year at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, where Stapleton took home two awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance ( “ Tr a v e l l e r ) . M o s t re c e n t l y, Stapleton won six awards at the 51st Annual ACM Awards—Album of the Year (for Traveller as both artist and producer), Song of the Year (for “Nobody To Blame as both artist and songwriter), Male Vocalist of the Year and New Male Vocalist of the Year. With the six wins, Stapleton ties the record for most ACM Awards won in a single year (only Garth Brooks and Faith Hill have previously won six in the same year). Co-produced with Dave Cobb, Traveller is comprised of songs written throughout Stapleton's 15- year career and evokes his childhood when country, blues, rock and R&B swirled together to create a distinctive sound that still resonates with modern fans.
Culture Club to perform in St. Charles
Of all the exciting groups to come out of the alternative music scene in the early 80's, Culture Club became the first to achieve arena headline status. The adulation from around the world and soaring record sales that followed the release of their classic single, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" saw Culture Club explode on a global level. Over the course of their career, they have 50 million record sales to their name. The band went on to achieve stunning success with their debut album Kissing To Be Clever, and in particular scored three Top Ten hits in the US - becoming the first group to hit that milestone since The Beatles. ‘’Time (Clock of the Heart) has also been included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 songs that shaped rock and roll. This show will see the original line-up on stage: singer Boy George, guitarist/keyboardist Roy Hay, bassist Mikey Craig and drummer Jon Moss.

Summerland Tour coming to Ballpark Village
The 5th annual Summerland Tour is proud to announce that Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit and Sponge will perform at each date of this year's acclaimed '90s alternative music tour. TheSummerland Tour, previously heralded by Rolling Stone as one of the "10 Hottest Summer Package Tours", kicks off on July 8th in Louisville, KY, and will include more than 25 dates throughout the US before wrapping on August 21st in San Antonio, TX. For more information, please visit: http://summerlandtour.net/. The tour will stop at Ballpark Village in St. Louis on July 31. Formed in 2012 by Art Alexakis, lead guitarist and vocalist of Everclear, the Summerland Tour has featured notable nostalgic alternative rock bands such as Soul Asylum, Eve 6, Space Hog, Gin
Blossoms, Marcy Playground, Live, Fuel, American HiFi, The Toadies and Filter. Tickets for Summerland Tour 2016 went on sale Friday, April 15th. With tremendous excitement towards this year's Summerland Tour, Alexakis explains, "This is the kind of line up I've dreamed of when I started the Summerland Tour. We kicked it off with Sugar Ray for the first year, so it feels great to have band join us for the 5th Anniversary. We love Lit & Sponge and cannot wait to share the stage with them. This lineup is stacked and this summer is going to be an adventure."
The Fox to host Celtic Thunder
Storming onto the main stage are international megastars Celtic Thunder, with Legacy, a brand new show that celebrates the influence of Irish and Celtic music around the world. Celtic Thunder will appear at the Fox in St. Louis on Oct. 8. Tickets are $45 to $75 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Legacy is a live show featuring a mix of lively, fast paced and upbeat songs “A Place in The Choir “Galway Girl and “Raggle Taggle Gypsy that represent the fun loving nature of the Irish and
slower classic ballads “Danny Boy “Noreen and “Buachaille On Eirne that portray a more nostalgic and romantic side. Continuing their tradition of paying homage to the musical culture and traditions of Ireland, Celtic Thunder ’s latest show is a depiction both their musical footprint over the past 8 years as well as their amazing heritage of Irish and Celtic music. Both the ensemble and solo performances in this thrilling evening of entertainment highlight the diversity of Irish music and song. Powerful anthems Ireland’s Call and Caledonia, heartwarming
ballads Song For The Mira and Take Me Home and lively crowd favorites such as Seven Drunken Nights all serve to showcase the musical talent of each soloist. Formed in Dublin in 2007, Celtic Thunder is a multidimensional musical and theatrical ensemble celebrated around the world for emotionally powerful performances and a state-of-theart production. Billboard magazine has named Celtic Thunder the Top World Album Artist (in 2008, 2009 2011 and 2015) while the group has had LPs placed in the World Album Top 10 every year since 2008.
