People People planner Route 66 Festival plans announced Plans are currently for the 13th Annual Route 66 Festival at Edwardsville City Park on Friday and Saturday, June 11 and June 12. The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to assume the role of organizing the festival from the Edwardsville Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce. The bands have been booked, food and beverage vendors have been lined up and the tents, inflatables, games and clowns have all been ordered. The Parks Department is seeking artists to participate in the Fine Art Fair, groups and individuals to perform in the Talent Show and classic cars to participate in the Classic Car Cruise and volunteers for a number of needs. Chesterfield Garden Tour set Chesterfield’s fourth annual Garden Tour will be held Saturday, June 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine. This self-guided tour offers six distinctly different residential Chesterfield gardens for a day of inspiration. A variety of gardens are featured this year, each illustrating a different area of gardening such as those dealing with slopes, drainage, full sun, shade, and water features. New to the tour this year are three connecting gardens, which enhance the neighborhood as well as each other’s space. All gardens were homeowner

designed and planted. Kay Folsom, event chairperson, states that, “All of our homeowners have successfully dealt with problems that arise in everyone’s landscape plans. The uniqueness with which they have addressed their individual gardens illustrates creativity, patience and hard work.” Ponds, pools and waterfalls can also be found on the tour along with entertainment and relaxation areas. Meramec Caverns offers Lantern Tours Meramec Caverns again presents Lantern Tours through the world-famous show cave every Friday and Saturday evening in June. Tours begin at 7:30 p.m. with an introduction to the aweinspiring beauty of the cave. Then each visitor is equipped with an aged, hand-held electric lantern. “There’s something about the ca ve b ei ng l it with lanterns,” said Erica Turilli, educational director at Meramec Caverns. “It gives you a sense of mystery and discovery.” During the 80-minute Lantern To u r, m a n y m y s t e r i e s a n d f o l k l o re a re told by a variety of characters. The historic characters portrayed include an Osage Native American who tells about Indians of Missouri; a Civil War soldier covering how the cave was mined to manufacture gunpowder; and the infamous outlaw Jesse James. The highlight of the tour is the Stage Curtain, a 70-foot tall, 60-foot wide and 35-foot deep vertical dripstone. “You hear dripping water, but only see a portion of the curtain a s y o u e n t e r t h e ro o m , ” s a i d Turilli. “It’s only when you get closer and can illuminate it with the lantern do you see the height

Choose a heating and cooling specialist It’s all about efficiency

Geothermal energy is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as the most energy efficient system on the market. Installation of a geothermal system is the equivalent of planting 750 trees or taking two cars off the road.

An old, inefficient heating and air conditioning system adds to your monthly costs. Air conditioners are rated on a seasonal energy efficiency ration or (SEER). The higher the SEER rate, the more efficient the unit is. Older equipment installed before 1990 can have a SEER rating of only nine or 10. The minimal SEER rating that is permitted to be sold now is 13. • What is the most efficient type of system to use? Geothermal energy is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as the most energy efficient system on the market. Installation of a geothermal system is the equivalent of planting 750 trees or taking two cars off the road. • How does geothermal energy work? Think of your lawn as a constant, renewable source of heating, cooling and water heating for your home. The earth absorbs almost 50 percent of all solar energy and remains nearly constant. Working with an underground loop system, geothermal heating and cooling systems utilize this constant temperature to exchange energy between your home and the earth as needed for heating and cooling. It’s environmentally friendly. In the winter, heat from the earth is carried to the geothermal unit. In the summer, the system expels heat from your home into the cooler earth via the loop system. As far as safety issues are concerned, there are no flames, no fumes, no flues, and no threats of carbon monoxide. It’s safe...no combustible gas! There are several loop configurations available. They can either be vertical, horizontal, or submerged in a nearby pond or lake. A water well can be used in many cases. Your energy dealer can help you determine the

type of loop best suited for your property. Geothermal energy is designed to operate quietly. There is no outdoor unit to disturb your landscaping. This is a flexible system to fit any home whether it’s new construction or an existing structure, large or small. Geothermal energy can be used with an all electric system or a dual fuel gas and electric system. Using a geothermal system, a typical home can save up to 60 percent over a conventional system...the lowest operating cost available. Currently household energy consumption is responsible for nearly 20 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal technology can provide a viable and cost effective solution to reduce this environmental hazard. • If I don’t have room in my yard to place a loop, what else can I do?A dual fuel system using a high efficiency gas furnace with an air to air heat pump is a good choice. • Why would I want a dual fuel system? Consider the economic balance point. This is the point at which it is most economical to use electric energy and the point at which it is most economical to switch to gas. This is based upon the rise and fall of electric and gas energy rates. • What are other points I should discuss with my heating and cooling contractor? Be sure your contractor is well trained and experienced. Request a load calculation to determine the equipment size your home will require. Ask the contractor to inspect ductwork for leaks, incomplete connections and compatibility with the rest of your system. Leaks should be fixed using a quality duct sealant. In some cases, ducts might need to be modified to ensure proper supply and return airflow.

Choose a lawn mower

Whether you choose a manual or riding mower, make sure the equipment fits your needs. There are many considerations when purchasing the right lawn mower. Answering some simple questions first to evaluate your particular needs may make your choices easier to manage. Lawn mowers come in such a variety of sizes, types, and price ranges that you should do some careful research before purchasing one. There are a whole range of things to consider, such as the kind and size of your lawn, what you can afford, how long the lawn mower will last, and even your mechanical abilities because all lawn mowers need some maintenance. The best way to begin your research is by taking a careful look at your lawn. If you are replacing your old mower, you probably already have a good idea of what will work for you. If you have just moved into a home, you need to know how many square feet of lawn you have. Do you have a lot or one or more acres to mow? This is important because recommendations for various mowers are partially based on lawn size. Take these steps when you are preparing to purchase a lawnmower:

Remember, no matter which type of lawn mower you choose, be sure it has an automatic shutoff if it tips over, the handle is disengaged or you dismount it automatically shuts off. Service and Maintenance

Lawn mowers come in such a variety of sizes, types and price ranges that you should do some careful research before purchasing one.

• Carefully walk around your lawn. Is it smooth? Does it have shady spots that are always wet? Does it have a problem with surface roots from a tree? What kind of of obstacles are on the lawn? Planter boxes, trees, bushes, patios, walls, and other obstacles can make maneuverability a very important factor. Is your lawn level, or is it on a slope? Since it is usually difficult to push a mower uphill, a selfpropelled lawn mower may be the most prudent choice for a sloping lawn.

• Take a realistic look at yourself. Do you really enjoy working in the yard? If not, you will probably hire a lawn service in a month or two. If you do enjoy working in the yard, will you also feel comfortable cleaning the air filter, changing the oil, and checking spark plugs? A good quality mower will last for many years if it is maintained properly. A poorly maintained mower will soon have to be replaced. • The next thing to consider is your budget. What can you realistically afford? How long will you live in this home? Will you need your mower in two years? Five years? Once you have answered these basic questions, you can begin your research. Walk behind mowers allow you to get some exercise as you mow. Do you prefer to use a self-propelled mower? What is your price range? What kind of transmission will you need? Manual or automatic? Automatic transmissions provide a much greater east-of-use and efficiency. Do you have the strength to pull the cord to start your mower or do you need an automatic starter? Perhaps you have not even thought about the following points.

What is included in your maintenance agreement and do you have one? Can you get service from the dealer after you buy your mower? It’s not always easy to get your mower annual maintenance. Maintaining your equipment leads to hassle free ownership, better resale value and less headaches in general.

A bit of Tuscany in southern Illinois By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

Back on the winding country roads of southern Illinois, just outside of Marion, lies a treasure from the Shawnee Hills Illinois Wine Trail. Blue Sky Vineyard is in Makanda at 3150 South. EGYPTIAn Hills Resort When you’re looking to get away from it all

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Lake Egypt (also called Lake of Egypt) is a beautiful lake. It is located about six miles south of Marion and extends over approximately 2,300 acres. The lake is owned by Southern Illinois Power Cooperative (SIPC). SIPC created the reservoir in 1962 by damming the south fork of the Saline River. This allowed them to supply cooling water for a coalburning power plant. The water stays at a warmer temperature throughout most of the year, making the fishing fantastic. Since this is a privately owned lake, there are a number of beautiful homes and cabins along the 90 miles of shoreline, but plenty of gorgeous forestry, which for the most part is part of the Shawnee National Forest. Once you see the beauty of this area, you will certainly want to stay for a while. One of the nicest resorts in the southern Illinois lakes area is right on Lake Egypt, Egyptian Hills Resort. Egyptian Hills Resort is a familyoriented getaway that has a number of “cabins” all of which have some kind of lake view. A majority of the cabins are owned by families, but there are plenty available for rent for a night, a week, several weeks or even months. Egyptian Hills Resort has been in its current location for many years, but in the past five years has seen a complete facelift due to the hard work of Jody and Kendra Perrotto and their entire extended family. Their brother-in-law, Judd, is a partner and is also one of the reasons the resort is now a first class place to stay. The Perrottos moved back to the region, having grown up in the area and then moved all over the country for their careers. They decided to retire to Lake Egypt to be closer to their parents and other family members. They were made aware of the availability of a dilapidated marina

with cabins, which was directly across the lake where they had just moved to. It was Jody’s first thought that this was not of any interest to him. But after a friend who was knowledgeable in real estate convinced him that if Jody didn’t buy it, he would, Jody had second thoughts. After a family discussion, the purchase was made and the hard work began. The family worked hard to literally mine a huge amount of slate rock from a pond area and built a waterfall that runs from the top of the property down to the lake. They have made a number of beautiful walking paths and edged the landscaping with this rock also. The other big project was all new cabins. These cabins are all cedar, have decks and beautiful views of the lake. They built a community pavilion, which plays host to live music on the weekends (maybe it will be the local “singing lawyers” or some bluegrass). There is a large fire circle that is lit most weekend nights and even at times during the week, and is open to anyone who wants to stop by. The marina itself has a gas dock where boats can easily pull right in to full gas service and then take a short walk up to the store that has just about anything you could possibly need. Whether it is ice, beer, fishing gear, boat needs, or even a life jacket for your pooch, you will find it at the store. There is a big selection of food and beverages, including homemade

pizza that will knock your socks, or at least your taste buds, clean off. Don’t forget to try some of the Starbuck’s coffee, latte, cappacino or expresso while you are there or have an ice cream sundae if you wish. Do not be surprised if you are greeted by a four-legged, furry family member upon your arrival to the marina. Sister golden retrievers, Mollie and Seabiscuit, keep watch not only on the arrivals to give a friendly welcome, but can be found many times wading at the boat launching ramp watching the water for any sign of a fish – which they rarely are ever successful at catching. Or maybe it will be Sampson, Benji, Betsy or Lilly wagging a welcome to make you feel right at home. If you too would like to bring your pet, just make mention when you book your stay and they will put you in a pet friendly cabin. All cabins are non-smoking, but you may smoke outside. Linens,

kitchen cookware, towels, cable TV and Înternet access provided. The rest, you will need to provide. There are three different types of cabins, “Cabin 8,” “Chalet,” and “Double Chalet.” “Cabin 8” has one bedroom with a queen bed and bunk set, a kitchenette, range top, microwave and fridge, living room, a bath, large deck and grill. It sleeps up to four and includes one boat dock. “Chalet” has a full bedroom and two loft bedrooms, a full kitchen, a bathroom, living room, large deck and a grill. Sleeps six and includes a boat dock. “Double Chalet” has two full bedrooms; two loft bedrooms, full kitchen, dining room, two baths, large living room with pull out sleeper, and an extra large deck with grill. Sleeps up to 10 and includes two boat docks. The prices start around $150 and

go up, per night, but there are a number of packages, so call for rates. There are even vacation packages that offer a number of weekly options and weekend options, for a reasonable monthly payment. Surrounding the Lake Egypt area is the Shawnee National Forest, which offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, lakes, canoeing, camping and wineries. If the lake doesn’t offer enough to keep you busy, there are many options surrounding it. The Perrotto family are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and they want you to feel like you are family too. “This is an extremely family friendly resort and we want you to experience that family feel when you visit,” said Jody. “Our main thing is to offer a place for people who own boats or want to rent a boat, but don’t have a lake house. Travel briefs State parks, sites among most endangered in U.S. WASHINGTON (AP) — When chunks of plaster began falling from the ceiling of the national cathedral of African Methodism last year, one of Washington’s oldest black congregations nearly had to abandon its sanctuary. Instead, the people of Metropolitan A.M.E. Church — where funerals were held for member Frederick Douglass and, a century later, for Rosa Parks — have begun emergency repairs. They brought in a scaffolding with wood planks to block falling debris. Now they worship with yellow construction lights strung overhead. On Wednesday, the church was among the sites named America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places because it needs $11 million in critical repairs. Also, for the first time, one spot on the list was reserved for all of the state parks and state-owned historic places in the country — a nod to widespread budget cuts affecting such sites. Metropolitan A.M.E., an 1886 red brick Victorian Gothic-style church, was once among the largest integrated meeting halls in the segregated nation’s capital. It deterioriated over time, suffering cracks and water damage as its residential neighborhood a few blocks from the White House was swallowed by downtown development. “It’s an expense the congregation by itself simply cannot afford,” said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “We all need to help.” State-owned properties are also among those listed as needing help, as about 30 cash-strapped states turn out the lights on as many as 400 sites and slash their budgets. New York state alone is shutting down dozens of parks and sites, including abolitionist John Brown’s farm where he is buried near Lake Placid. It has been open to the public since 1895. Vandals could cause costly damage at such sites if states turn off the heat and water and abandon aging structures, Moe said.

“This is really an alarm bell to call on Americans to realize the places they love are in trouble,” he said. Some states have cut their budgets for state parks and sites by as much as 75 percent in recent years, he said, threatening sites from New Jersey to Arizona. The group is urging states to follow Ohio’s example by pursuing public-private partnerships to keep sites open with fewer tax dollars. Among the most endangered sites on the 2010 list is one of the last surviving Negro League ballparks, Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, N.J. The 10,000-seat Art Deco stadium was home to the New York Black Yankees. In Lincoln, Neb., the Industrial Arts Building could meet the wrecking ball. And in the Silicon Valley, the oldest structure in Palo Alto, an 1844 adobe home built by one of the original Hispanic residents of San Francisco sits abandoned and could be demolished. The Juana Briones House recalls California’s Spanish and Mexican heritage.

In addition to the church, the state park and historic sites, the ballpark, the adobe home, and the Industrial Arts Building, other endangered sites on the National Trust list are: — Black Mountain in Harlan County, Ky. The historic mining towns of Benham and Lynch have built up heritage tourism that is now threatened by possible new deep mining permits around Black Mountain. — Merritt Parkway in Fairfield County, Conn. The National Trust said Connecticut has neglected maintenance on the scenic roadway with its decorative bridges and landscaping. — Pagat in Yigo, Guam. A large military buildup in the westernmost U.S. territory is threatening remnants of the ancient settlement of Pagat, home to the Chamorro people. — Saugatuck Dunes in Saugatuck, Mich. About 2,500 acres of natural sand dunes and wetlands along Lake Michigan are threatened by a proposed 400-acre development of homes, hotels, restaurants and

shops. — Threefoot Building in Meridian, Miss. A 16-story Art Deco building lavishly decorated but vacant since 2000 could face demolition after the city has been unable to deliver financing to help a developer restore the 80-year-old structure. — Wilderness Battlefield in Virginia. Near the site where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant first met in one of the bloodiest Civil War battles, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. intends to build a Supercenter. Preservationists are fighting the plan in court, saying it will attract more sprawling development within the battlefield boundaries.

But prices often aren’t far off from premade items of similar quality. In some cases, what you pay is tied to how elaborate your design gets. The biggest surprise? Customized items are typically refundable, even if they were monogrammed. A look at some options. 1. For the stone, there are 15 colors and six styles to choose from. The inside of the ring can be engraved with up to 18 characters and spaces. Rings bearing college names aren’t available, because Zales doesn’t have the necessary licensing rights. Cost: Rings range from $79 to $779. Most are under $400, however. How it Works: The company has let shoppers design sneakers for more than a decade now. But the level of customization was greatly expanded in the last year. Beyond design, shoppers can now tailor sneakers for comfort and performance as well. For example, runners can opt for firmer or softer cushioning, or pick soles for roads or trails. Of course, you can also specify the colors you want for various parts of the shoe, including the Nike swoosh logo. If you’re in New York City, you can also make an appointment at select Nike stores for help designing your sneakers. Orders are delivered within four weeks. Music Blueberry Hill to host Twangfest 2010 By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge As part of what has become a St. Louis tradition, Twangfest 2010 is soon to be under way. The mission of Twangfest is to preserve and promote the unique tradition and culture of Americana music. Twangfest works toward this goal primarily by organizing an annual multiple-day event that encourages, promotes and supports the development, performance and enjoyment of Americana music outside the profit-oriented institutional framework of the recording industry. What is Americana Music? Americana is a unique musical form, blending traditional and contemporary elements of American folk and popular music into new combinations that rearticulate older forms such as Western Swing, Rhythm and Blues, Appalachian mountain music, bluegrass, honky-tonk, polka, and rock-abilly, in terms of present-day social and artistic concerns. Primarily supported by grassroots initiatives and the efforts of its practitioners, Americana is a recognized and influential genre of contemporary popular music, although not one that is central to the profit-motivated categories generally promoted by the recording industry. Twangfest is an annual multipleday nonprofit festival featuring approximately 15 acts. The festival is hosted each June with performances at area venues in St. Louis. Legendary Nashville rock band Jason & The Scorchers, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award at

Jason & the Scorchers the Americana Music Conference in 2008, is one of the featured acts at Twangfest 2010. Band Bio: Creative Diversion By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Creative Diversion, a.k.a. Vendetta Sonata is an original and experimental progressive/hard rock band from St. Louis, Mo. The band was established in 2005 by Jonathan Baker. After years of long searching, he finally found the proper musicians to fit the band (but are currently seeking a drummer and keyboard player). The sound is influenced by many styles of music which includes: classic rock, blues, hard rock, classical and metal. Consisting of unique compositions, ripping guitar solos, hard grooving bass and drums and powerful vocals. Providing music that is not only easy to move to but dreamy and hypnotic. Tuning in SLSO Youth Orchestra bound for New York The Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra (YO) will perform at the historic Riverside Church on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at 7 PM as part of its first trip to New York City. YO Music Director and SLSO Resident Conductor Ward Stare will conduct the performance, which will benefit the Riverside Food Pantry. The concert repertoire will include Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony and other works performed during the YO’s 20092010 season. This concert is the first in a series of events to commemorate the YO’s 40th anniversary season. The YO was founded in 1970 by SLSO Conductor Laureate Leonard Slaktin. Sixty-four current members of the YO and three alumni will spend four days in Manhattan visiting several New York music landmarks. YO musicians will tour two of the city’s famed performing arts institutions: Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. The young musicians will also visit three of the country’s top music schools: The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes College. “The Youth Orchestra trip to New York will give members a new and unique performing experience in a wonderful space, introduce them first hand to some of New York’s musical institutions, and offer them a tour experience based on the professional operations’ procedures of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.” says YO Manager Peggy Neilson. As part of the tour, YO members will also attend a New York

Philharmonic concert on June 5. The following day, the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections will rehearse and be coached by members of the Philharmonic. People planner SIUE alum to display work on campus Millions of people have seen the work of Gib Singleton, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate who may be best known for creating the crucifix atop the crosier of the late John Paul II during his time as Pope and now carried by Pope Benedict XVI. Singleton’s sculpture inspires in seemingly diverse locations, ranging from the Vatican Museum to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and from the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority to private collections around the world. For the first time, 28 of the artist’s works—representing religious, western, and contemporary subjects—will be on display at his alma mater in the exhibit, From the Earth, from Thursday, May 13th, through Sunday, June 27th in SIUE’s Morris University Center Gallery. A native Missourian, Singleton was raised in Granite City and attended SIU Carbondale before enrolling at SIUE. He attended classes at what was then known as the Alton Residence Center and then at Edwardsville when the main campus opened in 1965. He graduated two years later and went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Singleon’s efforts earned him a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence, Italy. While there, he was made part of the team responsible for the restoration of Michelangelo’s Pieta, after it was damaged by a vandal in1972. Now 74, Singleton lives and works in Santa Fe, NM, where much of his art is on display at Galerie Zűger, and he just completed life-size representations of the 14 Stations of the Cross, which will be loaned to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe for the next 25 years. Kemper Museum puts photography in focus Over the last several years, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has built an exceptional collection of works by an international array of contemporary artists who both examine and expand the parameters of traditional photography. For these artists, photography is not a single, rigidly defined discipline or practice, but a versatile medium

that can be filtered through a wide range of artistic processes and used to address a wide range of aesthetic questions and concerns. From May 7 through July 26, the Kemper Art Museum will showcase this collection in Focus on Photography: Recent Acquisitions. Organized by assistant curator Karen Butler, the exhibition will feature more than 100 pieces by more than 20 artists, ranging from historical figures who helped define early photographic standards to contemporary photographers working within what art historian George Baker has termed “photography’s expanded field.” Taken together, these artists offer a lens through which to address the question: What is photography today? The earliest works on view a re ro o t e d i n p h o t o g r a p h y ’ s documentary tradition. Edward C u r t i s s o u g h t t o re c o rd a n d preserve the culture of disappearing Native American tribes, yet he also was deeply influenced by aesthetic conventions — the portrait, the pastoral landscape — borrowed from traditions of painting. This dichotomy reflects the complex n a t u re o f e a r l y 2 0 t h - c e n t u r y photography, which frequently negotiated between scientific instrument and artistic endeavor. Conversely, in artfully staged portraits such as Picasso, Cannes (1955), Lucien Clergue consciously attempted to supplant the painted portrait with a photographic image capturing the individual’s psychological essence. The work of artists such as Andy Warhol and Louise Lawler would further transform our understanding of the photographic image, radically undermining it’s apparent promise of objective knowledge or truth. Warhol, who lived life both through and for the camera, is represented by a large group of working Polaroids and black-and-white snapshots, the latter of which portray personal and public activities but, paradoxically, reveal very little about Warhol himself. Lawler, meanwhile, is represented by Not Yet Titled (2004/05), a recent example from a long line of photographs that investigate the life of artworks after they leave the studio and enter the public domain. These figures set the stage for a vast array of artists whose varied forms of critical engagement define the state of photography today. In Ecrivain public / Public letter writer, Rafaèle Decarpigny (2007), Sophie Calle uses photography to explore questions of subjectivity and identity, creating an unconventional portrait out of the response of one woman, a professional letter writer, to an upsetting email that Calle received from a boyfriend. Questions of identity also inform Christian Jankowski’s series Poster Sale (2005), which depicts 40 Washington University students posing with images they had selected to decorate their dorm rooms, thus allowing viewers to glimpse the ways popular culture

contributes to the construction of individuality. In Untitled (Pollock/Titian) #4 (1984/2005), Andrea Fraser deploys photography as a form of institutional critique b y j u x t a p o s i n g a n d t h e n re photographing slides of wellknown paintings by two renowned male artists. Wolfgang

Ti l l m a n s , i n Wa l d ( B r i o l I I ) (2008), addresses the issue of photographic representation head-on by photocopying his own photograph, of a man walking through a forest, rendering it dark, flat and blurry. Tillmans then scanned, enlarged and printed the photocopy again, this time as a singular image, thus placing it

somewhere between a photograph and a unique artwork. Rounding out the exhibition will be recently acquired works by Howard French, David Goldblatt, Doug Hall, Ulrike Kuschel, Sharon L o c k h a r t , A l e n M a c We e n e y, Abelardo Morell, Simon Nieweg, George Rousse, Georgina Starr and John Stezaker.

Arts The home of the blues New exhibit traces the history of this musical genre By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Blues music has been at the heart of St. Louis for more than a century. The roots of the song “The St. Louis Blues” by W.C. Handy hailed from this area and were published in 1914. “The lyrics tell of a sophisticated woman from St. Louis, Missouri, who has stolen the affection of the singer ’s lover. The opening line, “I hate to see that evenin’ sun go down” may be one of the more recognizable lyrics in pop music, and set the tone for many subsequent blues songs.” This was the description given as the influence this song has had over the generations. This song has been performed by numerous musicians of all styles, from Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith to Glenn Miller and the Boston Pops Orchestra. The influence of the song was so deep to the area that even the pro hockey team took on the name as representative of the reflection of St. Louis. Currently on exhibit, The Sheldon Art Galleries presents “Legends of St. Louis Blues Music,” through Aug.28, 2010 in the History of Jazz Gallery. “Iron Man 2”

Lots of things get blown up and torn apart in “Iron Man 2,” as you would expect from any self-respecting blockbuster kicking off the summer movie season. The magnitude of destruction far exceeds that of its predecessor and includes repeated instances of characters walking away from a massive fireball without looking back. ’Cause looking back is for wimps. But that’s not all that gets obliterated here. The substance of the original “Iron Man,” the brain and the soul that set it apart from the typical seasonal fare and made it one of the best films of 2008, also have been blown to bits. Tony Stark had purpose back then, and despite the outlandish fantasy of his Marvel Comics-inspired story, as a person he had a believable arc. Here, he’s purely arrogant once more, with some glimmers of mortality and daddy issues. And Robert Downey Jr., so irresistibly verbal and quick on his feet in the first film (and in pretty much every film he’s ever made), seems to be on autopilot. Sure, he’s got a way with a one-liner, and his comic timing is indisputable, but he’s done this songand-dance routine before and seems rather bored with it. Then again the character — and the sequel itself — are less defined this time. Narratively, “Iron Man 2” is a mess. Director Jon Favreau, working from a script by Justin Theroux, throws in too many subplots, too many characters. Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson are among the crowded supporting cast. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 124 min. 2-D only. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Letters to Juliet”

The doomed heroine of “Romeo and Juliet” is the nominal inspiration for this unbearably predictable romance that would profane her name if it were not lifted a notch by the graceful, if inexplicable, presence of Vanessa Redgrave. The movie takes viewers on a road trip through the gorgeous Italian countryside, which at least makes it pretty to look at. But Amanda Seyfried and Redgrave are stranded along the romantic byways in this phony story. Director Gary Winick and screenwriter Jose Rivera pile on contrivances relating to letters from the lovelorn written to Juliet, including one composed half a century earlier that brings Seyfried and Redgrave together on a quest for a lost love. Every turn of the movie is obvious and expected, even insufferable (there will be more than a few groans when audiences see where the

climax takes place). Gael Garcia Bernal and Christopher Egan co-star. RATED: PG for brief rude behavior and sensual images, some language and incidental smoking. RUNNING TIME: 105 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Robin Hood”

Darth Vader. Batman. Captain James T. Kirk. Now another legendary figure gets the origin-story treatment in Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood.” The world probably didn’t need another version of this famous tale, even though it arrives with outstanding production values and an impeccable pedigree. Besides Scott, the script comes from Oscar-winning “L.A. Confidential” writer Brian Helgeland, and the heavyweight cast is anchored by Russell Crowe as the title character and Cate Blanchett as Marian. (Solid supporting work comes from Mark Strong, William Hurt, Eileen Atkins, Matthew Macfadyen and the excellent Max von Sydow.) This Robin Hood is not a man in tights — he’s not even robbing from the rich and giving to the poor just yet — but rather an expert archer in the crusading army of King Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston) at the turn of the 13th century. Working with “Gladiator” director Scott for the fifth time, Crowe is hulking and overly serious, and the same can be said of “Robin Hood” itself. With its sweeping scope and tangible grittiness, it does look great. But then the brawny battle scenes, which set this incarnation apart from its lilting and swashbuckling predecessors, are shot and edited in such a chaotic, choppy way, it’s nearly impossible to tell what’s happening. RATED: PG-13 for violence including intense sequences of warfare, and some sexual content. RUNNING TIME: 140 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Holy Rollers”

The film depicts a world the majority of us have never visited — the insular existence of Brooklyn’s Hasidic Jews — only to wind up following the same rise-and-fall formula we’ve seen countless times before. But it does allow Jesse Eisenberg to put a new spin on the brainy-but-sweetly-awkward shtick he’s perfected in movies like “The Squid and the Whale” and “Adventureland.” Here, it feels like he’s really acting — and he’s really a grown-up — for the first time. Inspired by the true story of Orthodox Jews who functioned as drug mules in the

late 1990s, smuggling a million Ecstasy pills into the United States from Europe, this first feature from director Kevin Asch offers some strong performances and a vivid sense of place with its synagogues and modest homes. Eisenberg stars as Sam Gold, a serious man with plans to marry, have children and become a rabbi. But he finds himself intrigued by the brash flashiness of his next-door neighbor, Yosef Zimmerman (Justin Bartha, the bachelor from “The Hangover”), and getting drawn into his smuggling ring. You can see the self-destruction coming from a mile away — long before Yosef gets in over his head with an Israeli drug cartel — in the script from Antonio Macia. And yet Yosef is charismatic and undeniably magnetic, for Sam and for us, so it’s hard not to get dragged along for this wild ride. RATED: R for drug content and language throughout, and brief sexual material. RUNNING TIME: 89 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Shrek Forever After”

Given that this is the first film in the “Shrek” franchise in 3-D, it’s surprisingly flat — and we’re not just talking about the look of it. This fourth and allegedly final installment in the series is lifeless, joyless and woefully devoid of the upbeat energy that distinguished the earlier movies — well, at least the first two. If “Shrek the Third” from 2007 felt tired, “Shrek Forever After” is practically narcoleptic. Brief bursts of manic energy give way to long, heavy stretches that drag. Most of the hackneyed pop culture references of its predecessors are gone, mercifully, but so is the fun. This time, the big, bad ogre (voiced as always by Mike Myers) is having a mid-life crisis — not exactly a hoot for the kids in the audience, and their parents can suffer through that at home for free. As for the animation, presenting it in 3-D doesn’t add a whole lot. This is not a deeply immersive experience; more often, it consists of stuff being flung at you in gimmicky fashion. And the frustrating part is, the “Shrek” movies didn’t need an added dimension: They already had an impressive visual scheme all their own. Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas return to the voice cast. RATED: PG for mild action, some rude humor and brief language. In 3-D and IMAX 3-D. RUNNING TIME: 93 min. The texture of the surroundings that made the franchise stand out among a slew of animated fare — the tactile nature of the grass and trees, the water, Donkey’s fur — gets obliterated when rendered in 3-D. And so in theory, all that’s left is the story, but that doesn’t reach out and grab us either. into the ground — Shrek loses it. He misses the simple pleasures of being a fearsome ogre: terrorizing villagers, wallowing in the mud, etc. He throws a tantrum. Blinded by his frustration, he enters an ill-advised contract with the obviously evil Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) to revisit his old life for one day. But this sends him to an alternate universe where the land of Far, Far Away, as he knew it, no longer exists. Fiona isn’t his wife but

rather a warrior princess leading a rebellion; his best friend, Donkey (Eddie Murphy), is still perky and sassy but doesn’t know him; and, most troubling purely from a survival standpoint, ogres are being hunted in the woods. That’s right, it’s the old alternateuniverse bit. So Shrek must befriend Donkey and woo Fiona to make everything right again: basically, repeat all the steps he went through in part one,

which only reinforces the lack of originality now that we’ve reached part four. An attempt an injecting some novelty with the Rumpelstiltskin character also falls flat: He’s tiny but hugely obnoxious. It’s one thing to have an over-the-top villain if he’s a compelling, well-developed figure. This guy is just off-putting. The only thing that changes about him are the wigs he wears for various occasions.

“Sex and the City 2” – without the city By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I feel somewhat troubled by the fact t h a t “ t h e C i t y ” , a s i n N e w Yo r k C i t y, is a such a part of the title and history of the Sex and the City franchise, yet feels irrelevant to the new sequel hitting theatres this weekend. Just having explained to a co-worker that it was like an additional character, not just a location of the events, I expected to see the Big Apple shown in sparkling detail and brought to life for the movie. Alas, “Sex and the City 2” spends most of its considerable running time (again, five back-to-back episodes’ worth) abroad in Abu Dhabi. Our favorite characters - Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte Yo r k ( K r i s t i n D a v i s ) - e a c h l e a d f u l l , interesting, successful, trying lives. They w e re t a i l o r- m a d e ( n a t u r a l l y ! ) f o r t h e silver screen, but so were their problems. The first half of the films establishes the overwhelming obstacles that lead to

“Sex and the City 2”

each character ’s cry for catharsis. To wit, Samantha rages against the on-set of menopause. In a fit of empowerment, Miranda leaves her law firm after feeling u n a p p re c i a t e d . B e i n g m a r r i e d t o M r. Big has Carrie feeling boxed in (and him unable to roost). Worst, In a bid to escape the children she tried so hard for so long to have, Charlotte starts to abuse the services of her nanny (Alice Eve), an overly attractive young Irish woman who turns many heads with her naive sexual appeal. Some of the classic stuff is still present: the husbands (Chris Noth, David E i g e n b e rg , a n d E v a n H a n d l e r ) g a t h e r

for golf or dutifully hold their wives’ purses. Carrie’s books continue to fly off the shelves, while leaving her artistically unfulfilled. Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) still revs up Samantha’s engine, but she’s onto something new with Rikard (Max Ryan), a dreamy Danish architect. When life gets too hard, though, the girls get going on an all-expenses-paid trip to the capital city of the United Arab Emirates for a relief vacation. Under the guise of Samantha’s publicity agency, and through the graces of a wealthy hotelier sheik (Art Malik), they do it up right, turning “the new Middle East” on its ear. They live like kings in a region where women are still second-class citizens. There is no political message here, but the topic is merely noted and discussed frankly as the quartet sip strong coffee, ride camels and spend time being doted upon by their personal butlers (only one of whom gets actual lines). The rabble-rousing reaches a climax, first, when Carrie bumps into former beau Aidan Shaw (John Corbett, looking

better than ever) at a spice market. They meet cute, have a friendly date, a n d i n t ro d u c e t h e m s e l v e s t o t h e i d e a of rekindling what once burned so hot for them. Would Carrie cheat? I won’t s a y h e re , b u t t h e e n t i re s c e n a r i o w a s the closest thing that passed for plot in a film based on flash (Liza Minnelli, Penelope Cruz, and Miley Cyrus cameo), excess (who really needs two great Manhattan apartments), and decadence ( M o ro c c o d o u b l e s f o r t h e U A E i n t h e picture, but it might as well be the moon for what this Middle American knows about living that high kind of life). It did get a little more interesting when Samantha faced possible detainment for immodest behavior, a crime punishable by imprisonment in the seaside desert destination. Wr i t e r / p r o d u c e r / d i r e c t o r M i c h a e l Patrick King did what he knows best how to do. We should at least be pleased that the movie flows better than the original picture. It’ll never be as good as the series, but it’s still a great date movie... especially if you don’t mind going armin-arm with your best gal pals.

Old favorites score at box office

"Shrek Forever After," "Sex and the City 2" are holiday weekend winners LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Shrek Forever After” won another weekend at the box office, while “Sex and the City 2” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Ti m e ” w e re i n a p h o t o f i n i s h for the No. 2 spot. Wi t h $ 5 5 . 7 m i l l i o n o v e r t h e l o n g M e m o r i a l D a y h o l i d a y, D r e a m Wo r k s A n i m a t i o n ’ s “Shrek Forever After” was No. 1 for a second-straight weekend. The movie raised its 10-day domestic total to $145.5 million. “To be so decisively No. 1 in the face of these other two big movies is pretty thrilling,” said Anne Globe, head of marketing for DreamWorks Animation. Many in Hollywood thought “Sex and the City 2” would debut at No. 1. But the Warner Bros. release may have to settle for third-place. Based on studio estimates Monday for the four-day weekend, Disney’s “Prince of Persia” debuted at No. 2 with $37.8 million, slightly ahead of the $37.1 million for “Sex and the City 2.” T h e t w o m o v i e s w e re c l o s e enough that second- and thirdplace rankings could change once final numbers are released Tuesday.

Based on the video game, “Prince of Persia” stars Jake Gyllenhaal in an action adventure set in ancient times. Fishermen: Gulf seafood is still safe NEW ORLEANS (AP) — As the thick oil from the BP spill bubbles t h ro u g h t h e G u l f o f M e x i c o , threatening sea life and wetlands, foodies are taking up knife, fork and wine glass to defend the equally vulnerable reputation of the coast’s seafood industry. The New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, an annual celebration of the city’s love of all things tasty, is pairing wines from around the world with the cooking of some of the city’s best chefs to help deliver the message: Louisiana seafood is still safe, available and delicious. “What’s at stake is a whole way of life,” said John Besh, a cookbook author and one of the city’s most celebrated chefs. “It’s one of the richest ecosystems in the world. Anything that lives, swims, eats or breeds in the Gulf of

Mexico starts out in the Louisiana wetlands,” he said. “We need to protect it, and we need to let the world know it’s still available.” The festival, which opened last Wednesday, is a bit more tony than the recent Jazz and Heritage Festival or French Quarter Festival — organizers say they expect attendees in the $100,000-plus income bracket. It traditionally p ro v i d e s a t o u r i s m b o o s t a s New Orleans’ begins its slide into summer, when visitors tend to avoid the city’s heat and high humidity. To help attract national attention, Besh and Paula Deen, the queen of southern cooking and Food Network star, are teaming up during the festival to hype local seafood and raise money for the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation.

Television DeGeneres looks to broaden horizons NEW YORK (AP) — When Ellen DeGeneres was selected to replace Paula Abdul on “American Idol,” there were a few grumblings from people who questioned her musical expertise. While it was clear from her boogying ways on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that she’s a music fan, DeGeneres had no official role in the industry and had never played a role in creating music. Now, that’s all changed. With her new record company, eleveneleven, DeGeneres is poised to become more than just a tastemaker; she’s hoping to be a star-maker. And some of music’s top executives and entertainers believe the talk-show host and “Idol” judge is the right person to help a sagging industry. “She has talent, she has feel, and she has the platform. She’s the modern record company. Ellen is what a record company will look like

in the future,” said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope, Geffen and A&M Records. In an announcement earlier this week, DeGeneres said the first artist to be signed to the label is 12-yearold Greyson Chance, who recently became a sensation on YouTube with his piano version of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.” There’s no date for the album’s release, and a source familiar with the new label said DeGeneres is in talks to distribute eleveneleven through a major record company. Eleveneleven is a partnership between DeGeneres and Telepictures Productions, the producer of her hit show. Even before creating the label, DeGeneres was seen as a powerful force to boost music in the industry. While many talk shows have music guests, DeGeneres’ show stands out because she’s a fan.

“Her openness to music and her love of music has been a great aid in us really sort of breaking our artists and exposing our artists,” said Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman of
