Ranken Technical College Rising up to meet the challenges of today – and tomorrow By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge With the economic climate constantly changing comes a shift in the job market. Jobs that were in high demand five years ago are not necessarily what is in demand today. Along with the economic issues has come an increase in a number of college and university tuitions. These factors are causing high school students and people already in the work force to take a second look at their career choices. Many are turning to technical schools and colleges, which are offering more programs, degrees, and certifications in fields that are in high demand. Not only do students receive an education in a needed field, but they can achieve their education at a more excelerated rate than most universities. Ranken Technical College is quickly becoming one of the most respected technical colleges in the Midwest. Ranken is a private, non-profit institution that is steeped with history. Ranken has provided students with top quality educational programs for 100 years. Ranken’s primary mission is to provide the comprehensive education and training necessary to prepare students for employment and advancement in a variety of technical fields.

June 10, 2010

Ranken Technical College’s educational programs include degree and certification programs in automotive, construction, electrical, information technology and manufacturing. Their modern facilities, state-of-the-art shop equipment and abundant resources provide an excellent environment for comprehensive technical education. “Students come here seeking an education in a facility that is going to give them the experience they will need to work in the real world. We offer that,” said Susan Flayer, Director of Marketing. “We just recently opened our new dormitory facilities offering student housing and that has become very popular.” In 2009, Ranken was proud to offer housing for students to be able to live on campus while attending the school. Prior to that, students had to either find their own housing or commute, limiting many students from further distances from being able to attend Ranken. Walker Hall is the new student dormitory, which not only houses male students, but a few females also. Walker Hall offers a number of extra options for students including group work-out times, financial awareness workshops, microwave cooking classes, video game tournaments, and a number of other events. There is around the clock security, a recreation center complete with pool table and foosball table and a workout

room with weights and cardio equipment. Ranken works very hard to offer training in the latest technological education and is always trying to add new programs as they become available. “Students look to Ranken to offer training in technological careers that are most in demand. We are really proud to add the “Fabrication and Welding Technology” program to our curriculum,” said Flayer. The new program offers the fundamentals of welding, blue print reading and quality inspection, welding fabrication, equipment technology, GMAW/MIG (Gas Metal Arc Welding), GTAW/TIG (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding, SMAW/Stick (Shielded Metal Arc Welding, FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding, structural fabrication, chassis fabrication and CNC Cutting/ Blueprint Reading. This program covers a number of certifications for students interested in furthering their education can seek information about additional education to be credited toward an Associate of Applied Science degree. Ranken Technical College is located at 4431 Finney Ave., in downtown St. Louis, near the Central West End. They offer daytime and evening classes and programs. For more information about any of the programs offered or any other questions, visit their Web site at www.ranken.edu or call (314) 371-0236; Toll-free: (866) 4RANKEN.

People People planner Circus Flora returns to St. Louis In its 24th season, Circus Flora, St. Louis’ beloved one-ring, Europeanstyle circus, presents an all-new show, Ingenioso, inspired by the impossible dream of Don Quixote and presented by Edward Jones. The show premieres June 3 and runs through June 27, adding a full week of performances to the regular production schedule. The always affordable, family-friendly circus takes place under the air-conditioned, red-and-white, big top tent in Grand Center, St. Louis’ arts and entertainment hub, adjacent to Powell Symphony Hall (corner of Grand Boulevard and Samuel Shepard Drive). With a sizzling Spanish flair and a variety of classic circus acts including galloping conquistadors, hilarious farmyard animals, classic equestrian ballet, breathtaking aerial acts and an awe-inspiring low-wire walker, the world-renowned Circus Flora ensemble brings this memorable tale of misadventure to life. The story of Don Quixote lends itself perfectly to the circus arts, where before our eyes, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, and heroes emerge as gentle, triumphant clowns persuading others to see the glory of the world as they do. The circus ring becomes the fields of LaMancha, as Ingenioso follows the noble, often haphazard quest of Don Quixote, the Knight of the Mournful Countenance, and his squire Sancho Panza to right the wrongs of the world – or at least the wrongs of the world within riding distance. Here, windmills transform before our eyes into giants, peasant girls to princesses; a barnyard scene becomes a twelve-pony liberty act, and the swineherd, an elegant lady. Ingenioso refers to the ingenious, quick-thinking of Don Quixote as he mistakes ordinary objects and people for the fantastic, and falls into misadventure after misadventure, always managing to emerge unscathed. His sidekick, Sancho Panza, however, suffers the physical assaults and vicissitudes of the escapades. Thus the beloved clown Nino (Giovanne Zoppe) plays the role of Sancho Panza as he tries to carry out the orders of his sometimes irrational master, Don Quixote, played by Carlos Svenson, animal and horse trainer. With returning favorites and surprising new acts, the brand new 2010 production reunites world-renowned Circus Flora stars Cecil MacKinnon as Yo-Yo the Narrator, Carlos Svenson as Don Quixote, Giovanni Zoppe as Nino the Clown, the Flying Pages, the St. Louis Arches and the Circus Flora band. Highlights include the breathtaking trapeze artistry of the Flying Pages, Sasha Alexandre Nevidonski’s equestrian ballet aerial silk act, Jenny Vidbel’s Mixed Animal Act and Liberty Pony Act (Vidbel also plays the love interest of Don Quixote), the Cossack Riders as the trick riding galloping conquistadors, Vince Bruce of Vince Bruce Roman Riding and Trick Roping as the Knight of the Mirrors, low-wire walker Julien Posada in his Circus Flora debut, aerial straps duo Erika and Andrew Adams, and Hovey Burgess. Show times are Tuesday through Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday at 1 and 5:30 p.m.; and “Little Top Wednesday” at 10 a.m., a special one-hour show for smaller kids or the “kids at heart.” Tickets for Ingenioso are $8 - $39 and available through all MetroTix outlets including www.MetroTix.com and by phone at 314-534-1111. Tickets are also available at the Emerson Box Office in the Centene Center for the Arts & Education and by calling Circus Flora, 314-289-4040.

The Arts

“Character” Edwardsville duo featured in Jacoby Arts Center exhibit By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Maybe it has been mentioned before, but this community is so fortunate to have such fantastic opportunities to display and enjoy art in so many mediums. I personally have lived on both sides of the river and have to say that I never saw the local communities embrace or patronize the arts like they do in this area. Artists are so fortunate also to have a number of venues to access for display of their works. The art community has embraced and has been embraced by so many excited patrons, admirers and artists, that it stands to be mentioned from time to time. Jacoby Arts Center presents “Character,” featuring the work of artists Patrick Dailey, Dennis D e To y e a n d D a v i d M . Ya t e s .

DeToye and Yates are both of the Edwardsville area and Dailey is from the Alton area. “Character,” is a distinguishing quality that makes each individual unique. Patrick Dailey states that, “Part of my character lies in the creative work I produce.” In his illuminated alphabet series, character, doubles as a graphic communication and a visual representation of Dailey’s need to collect, organize, sort and analyze the complexities of nature. He is an educator in the biological sciences as well as an artist. Dennis DeToye’s larger than life portraits investigate the character of a person up close and personal. A new series of portraits relate his process to his changing tastes in music. As his musical leanings turn towards bluegrass and roots music, his paintings have affected a folk style all of their own. Reminiscent of patchwork quilts, DeToye’s latest portraits weave pattern across the surface of his subjects. Sometimes the patterns fade into the skin and appear to become an intricate part of the person while in others the quilt pattern overwhelms and engulfs the subject. D a v i d M . Ya t e s ’ l a rg e s c a l e portraits of birds became a series of grand history portraits eschewing the typical subject of nobility and heads of state for that of birds. Despite their

a p p a r e n t s i m p l i c i t y, t h e s e paintings are infused with elements of art history, allegory, and symbolism. The Arts Artistic adventures Dance St. Louis plans 45th season Dance St. Louis will open its 45th season of bringing great dance of the world to St. Louis in October with one of America’s premier ballet companies, Houston Ballet, and will close the following August with the 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical. “Through the year we will journey to emotions only dance can bring, with each performance from a company admired all over the world,” said Michael Uthoff, Dance St. Louis artistic & executive director. Dance St. Louis’ 2010-11 season opens October 8 and 9 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center when, as part of the first-ever American Arts Experience–St. Louis, Houston Ballet brings an intimate program of sweet and playful classical dances by George Balanchine, Houston Artistic Director Stanton Welch, and Houston Associate Choreographer Christopher Bruce. The holiday season kicks off at the Fox Theatre on December 2-5 with The Joffrey Ballet in Nutcracker at the Fox, combining dancing of “exceptional fire and exuberance” (Chicago Sun-Times), Tchaikovsky’s evergreen score played live by the Ballet Orchestra of St. Louis, luscious Victorian sets and costumes, and performances by young St. Louisarea singers and dancers. Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet comes to St. Louis for the first time at the Touhill on January 28 and 29. In just seven years, this New York-based troupe of 16 international dancers has vaulted into the front ranks with its cutting-edge repertory from Europe’s most daring choreographers. On March 11 and 12, the monumental Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox on March 11 and 12 for a mixed program blending modern dance and African American spirit, climaxed by the celebration of 50 years of its signature masterwork, Revelations. On March 25-27, the Fox explodes with the ever-popular international percussion sensation STOMP, co-presented by the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. On April 8 and 9, the Touhill blossoms into phantasmagoric visions of Mother Nature with MOMIX in Botanica. C re a t u re s re a l a n d m y t h i c a l materialize thanks to props, costumes, lighting, and the impossibly nimble dancer-illusionists. On May 26, 27 and 28, Dance St. Louis and the Touhill co-present SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL 2011, the fourth annual Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza of 30 dance companies from across the Midwest and beyond, for three completely different programs over three nights at only $10 per night. The season concludes on August 10-28 at the Fox Theatre with Billy Elliot the Musical, co-presented with the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. The Arts Artistic adventures Unique St. Louis art on display at the Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host a special exhibit from St. Louis artist Sheila Harris at the Old Courthouse now through Aug. 22. Created especially for the memorial, the exhibit consists of nearly 40 watercolor paintings of buildings that once stood on the Arch grounds. Harris’ “portraits” of buildings depict structures from several generations of the city’s architectural history illustrating how the landscape on the riverfront evolved over time. The paintings are grouped based on four historic and stylistic eras on the riverfront. In addition, each portrait will include maps showing the buildings’ original locations, architectural fragments from the buildings, interpretive text and an artist’s statement. Harris, a St. Louis native, taught art at Rosary High School for 36 years. The exhibit is curated by her sister, NiNi Harris, a local historian and the author of nine books on St. Louis history, architecture, city neighborhoods and the Gateway Arch. While the exhibit is on display at

the Courthouse, Harris will discuss and demonstrate her technique during several scheduled appearances. A schedule of the appearances can be found online at www.nps.gov/jeff. NiNi Harris will also present a historical play based on the exhibit during its run. NiNi offers that the exhibit will “expand in a different media the riverfront story and bring to life the fact that there was once a wonderful collection of buildings there ranging from simple to ornate and from modest to grandiose. We have been so very fortunate in St. Louis, for we tore down a great collection of buildings, but got a great sculpture (the Gateway Arch) and landscape in their place. This is very rare in history and is one of the points I hope the exhibit will demonstrate.” This exhibit is possible due to the generous support from Jefferson National Parks Association.

He attended classes at what was then known as the Alton Residence Center and then at Edwardsville when the main campus opened in 1965. He graduated two years later and went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Singleon’s efforts earned him a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence, Italy. While there, he was made part of the team responsible for the

restoration of Michelangelo’s Pieta, after it was damaged by a vandal in1972. Now 74, Singleton lives and works in Santa Fe, NM, where much of his art is on display at Galerie Zűger, and he just completed life-size representations of the 14 Stations of the Cross, which will be loaned to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe for the next 25 years. How to. . . Quick and easy Until now sterilization required incisions and anesthesia and was performed in hospitals or surgery centers. Previous procedures carried the risks of general anesthesia and major surgery with incisions that were painful, requiring 5-7 days off work to recover.

Understand Essure

Essure is a permanent birth control procedure that works with your body to create a natural barrier against pregnancy. This gentle procedure can be performed in a doctors office in just minutes. Unlike traditional laparoscopic tubal ligation, it is not a major surgery re q u i r i n g h o s p i t a l i z a t i o n with general anesthesia and a 5-7 day recovery period. Instead, an Essure -certified doctor inserts soft flexible micro-inserts into the fallopian tubes in the office. No incision is needed because the inserts are delivered through the vagina and cervix, requiring only local anesthetic.

the hormone based birth control and are often temporary. Essure is covered by most health insurance. If it is performed in a doctor ’s office, depending on a specific insurance plan, payment may be as low as a simple co-pay. It is best to review insurance coverage with a particular carrier and doctor before receiving the procedure.

With Essure, you'll never have to worry about an unplanned pregnancy again. It is 99.74 percent effective.

Essure offers women what no other birth control ever has......no cutting,.. no general anesthesia...no slowing down to recover...no hormones ...short procedure time ...and peace of mind, knowing that you can rely on Essure for protection from unplanned pregnancy.

Most women actually watch the procedure on the monitor while it is being done. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes. Some women report mild discomfort or cramping during the procedure and after the procedure, similar to their monthly cycle. Women are typically able to go home within 45 minutes after having the procedure performed and return to their normal activates within the first day. Over the next several weeks, a natural barrier forms around the micro-inserts and prevents sperm from reaching the eggs. The ovaries will continue to release eggs and producing hormones, but the eggs will be absorbed by the body. Unlike some forms of birth control, Essure blocks the egg from meeting the sperm so conception never occurs.

Unlike other permanent birth control, the Essure procedure does not require cutting into the body or the use of energy to burn the fallopian tubes, all which presents a significant risk to the patient.

For the first three months after the procedure, the patient is instructed to use another form of birth control. After three months, an Essure confirmation test is performed to verify that the tubes are completely blocked. This test uses a dye and a special kind of x-ray to ensure that the patient is protected from the worries of an unplanned pregnancy.

Essure in 99.8% effective . In four clinical trials, there have been no pregnancies among Essure users. The procedure is not reversible. Like a vasectomy or a tubal ligation, Essure is permanent, so you should be sure that you do not want to have children in the future. With the Essure in place, periods will still occur and are usually unchanged. If a person has stopped birth control pills after the Essure was placed she may experience heavy cycles. These changes may be the result of discontinuing

How to. . . Quality does matter Products are available in a wide range of prices and qualities. In order to get the most out of your flooing investment, it is recommended to purchase the highest quality product you can afford.

Make the right flooring selection Choosing the right flooring for your home or office can be one of the hardest decisions to make. Narrow down your choices by considering your needs for the room you are doing. Consider how much traffic the area gets, the type of flooring you prefer, and your budget for the project. Product choices include carpet, vinyl, laminates, hardwood, tile, and stone. Ecofriendly products are available and offer an environmental advantage to your selection. Products are available in a wide range of prices and qualities. In order to get the most out of your flooring investment, it is recommended to purchase the highest quality product you can afford. Less expensive products are usually designed for low use areas and can show “wear” in heavy traffic areas. As products increase in price, they will offer improved finishes and textures, extended warranties and be made with higher quality materials. When choosing carpet, there are several textures and colors available in solids, prints, and multi-tone flecks. Certain styles and colors may show seams more than others, so it is important to consider the room size when selecting a carpet. Depending on the style, carpets are available in 12’ wide, 13’6” wide, and 15’ wide. Textured carpet adds casual beauty to any room. They have been the most purchased style over the years for their elegant look. Frieze’ carpets are increasing in popularity and resemble more of a “curly” or “shaggy” look. Frieze’s can hide seams better than other styles and may also minimize foot print and vacuum marks. Berber loop and commercial carpet is a good choice when looking for a durable carpet that is reasonably priced. A tightly constructed carpet will hold up better under foot traffic and is less likely to exhibit the pile distortion that typically occurs in carpets. Durability can be added by choosing the correct cushion choice to go under your carpet. The Manufacturer’s Warranty will state the specific cushion requirements in order for the warranty to be in effect. Often the “free” pad with a carpet purchase falls below the minimum standard and will void your carpet warranty. Vinyl Flooring is a durable and cost effective product that is easy to

maintain. Luxury vinyl tile and wood grain products offer a realistic look without the maintenance associated with real tile and wood. Laminate flooring is offered in wood and tile patterns that can offer you the look of the real thing at a fraction of the cost. Laminate is up to nine times harder than hardwood or vinyl flooring. It is a great selection for families with children or pets. Hardwood flooring is one of the most beautiful floors to put in your home, but requires more attention to keep it looking its best. There are many species of wood available that offer a wide selection of cosmetic looks at various hardness levels. Solid products are most popular, can be refinished in the future, and can be installed on or above grade. Engineered wood flooring can be installed on, above, or below grade. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are offered in a wide range of colors, sizes, and textures. You have the ability to customize your tile installation with the use of patterns, borders, and decorative accents that will add your personal touch to your home or office. Keep in mind that the cost of the tile is only a fraction of the total cost of a tile installation and it is important to use high quality setting materials to prevent future problems with your flooring. Make sure you go through the product maintenance brochure and use only the manufacturers care and cleaning recommendations. Most damage to flooring is caused by improper care and maintenance by the consumer and is not covered by manufacturer’s warranty. Floor finishes have changed over the years and can be easily damaged by house-hold cleaners or excessive water. With a little preventive maintenance and proper floor care, you can keep your floor looking good for several years into the future. A quality installation is the key to any flooring purchase. By using a local retailer you will be able to find a qualified, trained installer who will offer you a professional installation. Your local flooring retailer will be able to provide you with information and guidance to help you find the right floors for you. The Internet is a useful tool for researching a company’s product, but doesn’t replace the expertise a salesperson can offer.

How to. . . Water is the key Water deeper and less frequently. This develops the healthiest roots.

Care for your tree

Care Instructions Watering-Please Don’t Tease Your Plants! Water deeper and less frequently. This develops the healthiest roots. For most soils, you should be able to apply 10 to 30 gallons of water once a week, depending on plant/root ball size. It is always good to apply the water slowly enough that the soil will absorb it and have as little run off as possible. Make sure the water is penetrating deeply into the soil (more than just a couple of inches.) Soil basins and mulch are helpful in retaining water. DO NOT depend on rainfall to provide an adequate amount of moisture to your newly planted tree or shrub. With quick summer showers and hot weather, the moisture may run off or evaporate from the soil surface and not penetrate the root zone. Once established (after a full growing season,) trees and shrubs should require only supplemental watering during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Drought summer conditions adversely affect flower buds for the following year as much as does extremely cold winter weather. Before the ground freezes in the late fall, give plants a thorough soaking, especially those that retain their leaves during the winter months. Mulching-Most plants will benefit from an organic mulch covering the soil surface around them. A good organic mulch, such as hardwood bark mulch, will conserve moisture, help maintain a more even soil temperature, inhibit weed growth, and prevent soil compaction and erosion from rain

and irrigation. Applying mulch two to three inches deep surrounding, but not resting against the trunk, will give you a more vigorous plant. Also, mulch will help prevent damage by a mower or other lawn equipment which can severely harm trees. Water Basins-Use water basins for newly established trees and shrubs. Make the basin larger than the initial hole diameter with a three to four inch brim. Fertilizing-Feed your trees anytime from late fall to early spring, starting the second year. Trees that are fertilized may have two to three times more growth than a tree that has not been fed. Pruning-Watch for double tops and bad branch angles. Corrective pruning at an early age avoids problems later on. Please ask if you have questions on when and how to trim your particular tree. Borer Prevention-Recently transplanted trees that are yet to show strong yearly growth (or recently pruned or damaged trees) are susceptible to borer damage. The damage is done before it becomes obvious and small trees usually die the following growing season. As a preventative, spray the trunk and lower limbs with a borer killer in early June and again four weeks later. Mark your calendar! It is imperative that you do this, as there is no cure for this damage, and prevention is the key. Submitted by Art-Waldbart Nursery

“Wicked”

Life in the Land of Oz B.D. (Before Dorothy) By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Really, how much do we know about the witches of The Land of Oz. I mean really, you only see the legs of the Wicked Witch of the East, we only see Glenda, the Good Witch of the North in short segments of the film, and who knows what happened to the witch of the south, as she gets the short end of the stick in “The Wizard of Oz.” According the a Web site that tells everything you ever wanted to know about “The Wizard of Oz” (www.thewizardofoz.info/faq05.html#4), in the movie, only Glenda, the Good Witch of the North had a first name. So, other than the fact that we know that Glenda rides around in a bubble and the hag of the north has a thing for monkeys with wings and doesn’t shower, what do we really know? Well you are about to have a great way to find out more. After breaking box office records and selling out in record time in 2005 and 2007, “Wicked,” the smash-hit musical, will return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, June 16 to July 11. “Wicked” is returning to the Fox after two previous record-setting engagements. Curtain times for this limited four-week run are Tuesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are: Thursday, June 17, at 1 p.m.; Monday, June 28, 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 1, at 1 p.m. with no show on July 4. The role of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) will be played by Vicki Noon and Glinda (the Good Witch) will be played by Natalie Daradich. Playing the role of Madame Morrible will be Marilyn Caskey and The Wizard will be played by Don Amendolia. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Pippin,” Academy Award-winner for “Pocahontas” and “The Prince of Egypt”) and book by Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “Once And Again” and “thirtysomething”), “Wicked,” the untold story of the witches of Oz, is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (“Take Me Out,” “Love! Valour! Compassion!,” “The Vagina Monologues”) and features musical staging by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento (Aida, The Who’s Tommy, How To Succeed...). Based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked,” winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, is the untold story of the witches of Oz. It is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One – born

with emerald-green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. “Wicked” tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. “Wicked,” has “cast quite a spell” (Washington Post) throughout North America, breaking box office records in every city that it has played, including Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C, Philadelphia and Boston to name a few. Grammy Award-Winning Cast recording available on Decca Broadway. For more information about “Wicked,” log on to www. wickedthemusical.com. Ticket prices for “Wicked,” start at $33 and are available in person at the Fox Theatre box office or MetroTix outlets, online at www.metrotix. com or by phone at 314/534-1111. Tuning in Clayton’s Parties in the Park return The region’s best and original outdoor happy hour, Parties in the Park, hosted by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce, is back for its 27th season of live music and cold drinks in beautiful Shaw Park in Clayton. It will be THE place to be after work this summer. Best of all, admission to one of the city’s most familiar and eagerly anticipated parties in town is free and open to the public. The Parties in the Park 2010 season at Shaw Park, located on the southwest corner of Brentwood and Forsyth boulevards, continues on the second Wednesday of the month through August and the third Wednesday in September. May’s party featured Griffin & the Gargoyles, followed by Fat Pocket on June 9, GalaxyRed on July 14, Paint the Earth on August 11 and Kim Massie on September 15. By popular demand, “Rainouts at the Restaurants” will be held on the following Wednesday at participating Clayton restaurants in the event of a cancelation of any of the five scheduled parties. “People ask about rainouts every year,” said Ellen Gale, executive director of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. “And we think hosting them (rainouts) the following week at the restaurants is the perfect solution!” This summer, as the sun sets over Shaw Park and the workweek nears completion, catch up with friends old and new at the longest running outdoor happy hour. And come early each month for the best drink special in town: half-priced beer from 5 to 5:30 p.m. “What better way to unwind in the middle of the workweek than with cold drinks, live music and the great company of friends and colleagues?” said Brent Stevens, president and longtime volunteer of Parties in the Park. “And not just a great evening out in Clayton, Parties in the Park is a great benefit to the community. Whether looking to mingle with friends and colleagues, meet new people or just relax after a hard day’s work with a refreshing cocktail in the martini lounge or an ice-cold

beer, you won’t want to miss the 27th season of Parties in the Park. • July 14 - GalaxyRed with food by Miso on Meramac • August 11 - Paint the Earth with food by Maggiano’s Little Italy • September 15 - Kim Massie with food by California Pizza Kitchen For more information about Parties in the Park, call the Clayton Chamber of Commerce at 314-7263033 or visit www.partiesinthepark. org.

Travel

Life’s a beach Expert ranks America’s top spots SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — An annual list of top 10 beaches released Friday includes two in Florida, with the list’s creator saying he’s not worried about pollution from the oil spill. Dr. Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, who is also known by the friendly nickname Dr. Beach, included Siesta Beach in Sarasota and Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, on his list of best beaches. He said Cape Florida, on the southeast coast, “doesn’t get the wave activity” that can lead to tar balls washing up. As for Siesta Beach, he said he had looked at currents and believes “there’s very low probability the oil will get to southwest Florida.” The No. 1 beach on this year’s list is Coopers Beach in Southampton, N.Y., on the east end of Long Island. It offers pristine white sand gently sloping toward a shoreline of lapping waves, convenient parking and amenities and nary a gum wrapper in sight. “New York has world-class beaches, but I don’t think a lot of people in the United States know about them,” said Leatherman. This is Leatherman’s 20th year of compiling a list of the country’s top 10. Leatherman’s list also features another New York beach, Main Beach in East Hampton, Long Island, not far from Southampton. Main Beach takes the No. 5 spot on this year’s survey. “When most people think of a beach vacation destination, they go south,” Leatherman said. “I

kind of think the east end of Long Island is a well-kept secret for most Americans.” Rounding out the top 10 are Coronado Beach, Calif. (3), Cape Hatteras, N.C. (4), Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki, Honolulu (No. 6), Coast Guard Beach in Cape Cod, Mass. (7), Beachwalker Park in Kiawah Island, S.C. (8), and Hamoa Beach in Maui, Hawaii (9). Coopers Beach has been a contender for the top spot in recent years, but this is the first time a New York beach has made it to No. 1, Leatherman said. He considers factors like water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand, safety and facilities in making his list. Once a beach makes it to the top

spot, it is retired from consideration in future years, he said. Leatherman added that designation as the country’s No. 1 beach usually brings as much as a 20 percent bump in tourism. “Both Main and Coopers beaches have been recognized in the past as being among the top 10 beaches in the country — and to now hold the top spot is especially significant when you consider the quality of the company we’re in,” Moke McGowan, president of the Long I s l a n d C o n v e n t i o n & Vi s i t o r s Bureau, said in a statement. Main Beach was in the headlines in April after a 13-ton baby whale washed ashore and had to be euthanized; thousands of onlookers

visited the ailing mammal on the seashore while it struggled for life over several days. Several miles away on Coopers Beach, the Hamptons’ hometown crowd spoke about the cleanliness of the beach and described it as a welcoming, family-oriented playground. “It’s wide, the sand is like baby powder,” said Carol Gerbereux, a visitor for at least 40 years. “It’s just a beautiful location; it has wonderful facilities and it’s just a pleasure to come here.” Joseph Graygor, another longtime devotee, said litter is a no-no. “It’s a very, very clean beach,” he said. “There’s no garbage on it.” He also said a concession stand, showers, and other amenities are key assets at Coopers. “The parking area is very, very close to the beach. There are some beaches where you have to park a long ways away and walk a long way.” Village residents get access via a beach parking permit; those without permits face a $250 fine. But nonresidents can also visit for a daily fee of $40 — it is the Hamptons, after all. Alcohol is banned, along with tents, bonfires and overnight camping. Laura Masterson, a lifelong Southampton resident, noted that people thousands of miles away from Coopers Beach can visit via webcam. “It’s a gorgeous place to be,” she said as she settled into a beach chair. “We were just in Florida. We’ve been to Puerto Rico and Bermuda and you can’t find beaches as beautiful as this.”

NYC’s Whitney to build new, bigger downtown museum NEW YORK (AP) — The Whitney Museum of American Art will break ground on a new museum in downtown Manhattan in 2011. The museum’s board on Tuesday night unanimously approved the construction of the Renzo Pianodesigned building at the entrance to the new High Line park. It said the six-story, asymmetrical, metal-clad museum will provide “essential new space” for the Whitney’s holdings. The museum’s current Madison Avenue location can display only 150 works at a time from its 18,000piece permanent collection. The museum has raised $372 million of the $680 million project. It’s expected to be completed in 2015. The fate of the uptown museum

June 10, 2010

hasn’t been resolved. The Whitney board agreed to continue discussions with the Metropolitan Museum of Art about possibly sharing it.

Harley-Davidson Museum hosts Evel Knievel exhibit M I LWA U K E E ( A P ) — T h e Harley-Davidson Museum is hosting an exhibit on motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel. We d n e s d a y m a r k s t h e 3 5 t h a n n i v e r s a r y o f h i s We m b l e y Stadium jump in London, where he crashed and broke his back while trying to jump over 13 buses. “True Evel: The Amazing Story of Evel Knievel” will run from July 10 to Sept. 6. Among the items there will be his signature leathers and cane, personal photographs and letters, and the half-motorcycle, halfrocket “Skycycle” used to jump the Snake River Canyon. Artifacts will be from Harley-Davidson and the Knievel family. Knievel, who died in 2007, often used the Harley-Davidson XR-750 and was sponsored by the company in the 1970s. Knievel’s oldest son, Kelly, will be at the museum July 17 to talk about his father.

Tour of Missouri bike race canceled JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — O rg a n i z e r s o f t h e To u r o f Missouri have canceled this summer ’s bicycle race after state tourism officials declined to help fund it. To u r o f M i s s o u r i C h a i r m a n Mike Weiss said organizers pulled the plug on the race after Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration refused to back it or even to meet with race supporters. E a r l i e r T h u r s d a y, a b u d g e t committee for the Missouri Tourism Commission endorsed a $13.4 million spending plan that included no state money for the race. State lawmakers had indicated a preference to allot the race $1 million. Nixon spokeswoman Christine Bertelson said the final decision o n s t a t e f u n ding for the race b e l o n g e d t o t h e To u r i s m Commission, not the governor. But she indicated that Nixon agreed with the decision. “In these economic times, given all the cuts that are going on all o v e r s t a t e g o v e r n m e n t , t h e re are a lot of things that would be great if they could happen, but the state can’t afford them,” Bertelson said.

T h e 2 0 1 0 To u r o f M i s s o u r i had been scheduled for Aug.

31 through Sept. 6. Organizers had said previously that it likely

would be canceled if the state did not subsidize it.

“Iron Man 2”

Lots of things get blown up and torn apart in “Iron Man 2,” as you would expect from any self-respecting blockbuster kicking off the summer movie season. The magnitude of destruction far exceeds that of its predecessor and includes repeated instances of characters walking away from a massive fireball without looking back. ’Cause looking back is for wimps. But that’s not all that gets obliterated here. The substance of the original “Iron Man,” the brain and the soul that set it apart from the typical seasonal fare and made it one of the best films of 2008, also have been blown to bits. Tony Stark had purpose back then, and despite the outlandish fantasy of his Marvel Comics-inspired story, as a person he had a believable arc. Here, he’s purely arrogant once more, with some glimmers of mortality and daddy issues. And Robert Downey Jr., so irresistibly verbal and quick on his feet in the first film (and in pretty much every film he’s ever made), seems to be on autopilot. Sure, he’s got a way with a one-liner, and his comic timing is indisputable, but he’s done this songand-dance routine before and seems rather bored with it. Then again the character — and the sequel itself — are less defined this time. Narratively, “Iron Man 2” is a mess. Director Jon Favreau, working from a script by Justin Theroux, throws in too many subplots, too many characters. Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson are among the crowded supporting cast. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 124 min. 2-D only. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Shrek Forever After”

Given that this is the first film in the “Shrek” franchise in 3-D, it’s surprisingly flat — and we’re not just talking about the look of it. This fourth and allegedly final installment in the series is lifeless, joyless and woefully devoid of the upbeat energy that distinguished the earlier movies — well, at least the first two. If “Shrek the Third” from 2007 felt tired, “Shrek Forever After” is practically narcoleptic. Brief bursts of manic energy give way to long, heavy stretches that drag. Most of the hackneyed pop culture references of its predecessors are gone, mercifully, but so is the fun. This time, the big, bad ogre (voiced as always by Mike Myers) is having a mid-life crisis — not exactly a hoot for the kids in the audience, and their parents can suffer through that at home for free. As for the

June 10, 2010

animation, presenting it in 3-D doesn’t add a whole lot. This is not a deeply immersive experience; more often, it consists of stuff being flung at you in gimmicky fashion. And the frustrating part is, the “Shrek” movies didn’t need an added dimension: They already had an impressive visual scheme all their own. Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas return to the voice cast. RATED: PG for mild action, some rude humor and brief language. In 3-D and IMAX 3-D. RUNNING TIME: 93 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Micmacs”

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, whose films include “Amelie” and “Delicatessen,” combines the spirit and visual flair of those fantasies for a frivolous, featherweight yet fun concoction about lovable misfits messing with big, bad weapons manufacturers. Like a grown-up gang of Little Rascals, with shades of Charles Chaplin’s Little Tramp and Buster Keaton’s wild antics, Jeunet’s ensemble romps through clever stunts and gimmickry to carry out their low-rent “Mission: Impossible” stratagems. Comedian and filmmaker Dany Boon stars as a gentle soul aiming to inflict some personal justice on the arms companies that made the munitions that left him with a bullet lodged in his brain and that killed his father. He finds allies in a band of scroungers and gatherers living in an elaborate subterranean dwelling made of scrap in a Paris junkyard. With a big heart and a playful visual style, the film is a nice palate cleanser among all the computer-generated action of Hollywood’s summer blockbusters. RATED: R for some sexuality and brief violence. RUNNING TIME: 104 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”

As we await the eventual arrival of “Donkey Kong: The Musical!” yet another movie based on a video game, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” arrives in theaters. As this genre goes, “Prince of Persia” doesn’t have the shoddy appearance of, say, “Alone in the Dark” or “House of the Dead” or any number of films from the infamous German director Uwe Boll. No, this is a Jerry Bruckheimer production, so it looks cheesy in the kind of monster-budget way you can only achieve through

copious amounts of computer-generated imagery. There’s nothing terribly memorable about “Prince of Persia”; recalling the plot a half-hour afterward might require some effort. Somewhere beneath all the fake, glossy effects — which in no way suggest anything even remotely resembling a tangible reality — there must be a story and characters and, you know, acting. Jake Gyllenhaal, as our courageous and resourceful hero Dastan, always has an engaging presence about him — those big, blue eyes, that goofy smile — and that sweetness helps keep the mood light when “Prince of Persia” threatens to take itself too seriously. Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina co-star. RATED: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Sex and the City 2”

So over-the-top ridiculous, it plays like a parody of what a sequel to the 2008 hit movie would be. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) travel to Abu Dhabi, wear outrageous costumes and ride camels across the desert. So much goes wrong here: It’s self-indulgent, way too long and never as clever or funny as it’s intended to be. Writerdirector Michael Patrick King and Co. found a balance of substance and style with the long-running, hugely popular HBO series. Even the original “Sex and the City” movie, for all its fashionable splashiness, still managed to be about something: the way the characters adapted as they morphed from single party girls into women building families for themselves. But the sequel too often feels like a series of lavish set pieces with sporadic discussions about careers, marriage and babies in between (although one of those talks, between Charlotte and Miranda about the realities of motherhood, is the purest moment in the movie). The wretched excess clangs, and much of the shtick has long since gotten old. Carrie’s running voiceover, the structural thread all along, feels intrusive and pat. Charlotte’s cutesy prudishness seems an ill fit on a married mother of two. And Samantha’s corny puns reach a new low, as evidenced by her reference to a hot, globe-trotting architect she meets in the desert as “Lawrence of my labia.” It’s seriously cringe-inducing. RATED: R for some strong sexual content and language. RUNNING TIME: 146 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies “Holy Rollers” shows formulatic rise, fall By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press “Holy Rollers” depicts a world the majority of us have never visited — the insular existence of Brooklyn’s Hasidic Jews — only to wind up following the same rise-and-fall formula we’ve seen countless times before. But the film does allow Jesse Eisenberg to put a new spin on the brainy-but-sweetly-awkward shtick he’s perfected in movies like “The Squid and the Whale” and “Adventureland.” Here, it feels like he’s really acting — and he’s really a grown-up — for the first time. Inspired by the true story of Orthodox Jews who functioned as drug mules in the late 1990s, smuggling a million Ecstasy pills into the United States from Europe, this first feature from director Kevin Asch offers some strong performances and a vivid sense of place with its synagogues and modest homes. And the first time Eisenberg’s character, Sam Gold, meets the young woman he’s been arranged to marry, it’ll make you laugh and squirm simultaneously. Everyone’s had a disastrous first date; few are as excruciating as this one. But this is the quiet, respectable life that’s been determined for him: a wife from a decent family, kids (she wants eight) and a career as a rabbi. Soon, though, she finds a match from a family of higher social status, and Sam finds himself intrigued by the brash flashiness of his next-door neighbor, Yosef Zimmerman (Justin Bartha, the bachelor from “The Hangover”). We know Yosef is cool — and probably trouble — because he smokes and drops a lot of F-bombs. Not exactly proper Orthodox behavior. You can see his self-destruction

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by First Independent Films, Jesse Eisenberg, left, and Justin Bartha are shown in a scene from, “Holy Rollers.” coming from a mile away — long before he gets in over his head with an Israeli drug cartel — in the script from Antonio Macia. And yet Yosef is charismatic and undeniably magnetic, for Sam and for us, so it’s hard not to get dragged along for this wild ride. At the same time, Yosef conducts his life in a way that deviates so vastly from convention that we have to wonder, was he ever observant? Did something

happen that prompted him to break from tradition? We never find out. Yosef lures his scholarly younger brother, Leon (Jason Fuchs), and Sam into his world by telling them they can make a few extra bucks importing “medicine” from Amsterdam — the logic being, no one would ever suspect them coming through Customs looking the way they do. It doesn’t take long for them to figure out what

this stuff actually is, and while Leon balks, Sam doesn’t seem to mind, and the excitement of being around Rachel (Ari Graynor, the party-girl pal from “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist”) is an added enticement. She’s the girlfriend of suave Israeli drug dealer Jackie Solomon (Danny Abeckaser), whom they all work for, but she’s awfully flirty. There is a bit of a vicarious thrill watching Sam lose his inhibitions

and enjoy life as he starts wearing hipper clothes, attending all-night raves and, eventually, sampling the product. Still, we know that despite his rebellion, the stern words of his proud father (Mark Ivanir, dignified and intense) ultimately will win out. Guess the party has to end sometime. It’s just obvious how this one’s going to end from the start.

Action unfolds in different forms By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The summer season offers many opportunities for action-obsessed moviegoers to see the biggest, baddest, coolest do-gooders out there. Action heroes are the bread and butter that feed us May through August. That said, there are two distinct styles of action star setting the table right now and they couldn’t be more different if they tried. The first is Dastan, an orphan raised by a king to become a warrior hero. The other is MacGruber, a bumbling expert on everything who isn’t good at anything. The material that serves each hero is also indicative of the type of hero they actually are. Will Forte is hilarious each week on “Saturday Night Live.” His characters talk in funny ways and often say inappropriate things. Neither is more true than when he plays MacGruber, a parody of Richard Dean

June 10, 2010

Anderson’s popular MacGyver character from the long-running 1980s ABC series of the same name. While MacGyver often applied science, ingenuity, and patience toward solving live and death problem, MacGruber uses the same coolness to cause calamity. He frequently fails to diffuse the bomb, rescue the girl, or save the day. His standard uniform is a flannel shirt, multipocketed fishing vest, aviator sunglasses, and a major helmet of hair. He gives mullets a worse name than even Billy Ray Cyrus. In this film, humor often patches up the failing in the storyline. That could be a the fault of turning a thirty-second sketch into a ninety-minute feature. The joyless adventures of MacGruber, Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig), and Lieutenant Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) really only succeed in their imbecility. Wiig never dazzles with the same ease we see in her sketch comedy, including especially the bizarre love scene she shares with MacGruber. Phillippe is as wooden as

ever. The only real talent in this film belongs to the writers of MacGruber ’s frequent breakdowns in which he offers to trade awkwardly explicit (and, yes, raunchily funny) sexual favors for some type of gain. Otherwise, the only tool he’d have to defeat the villainous Dieter (Val Kilmer) would be a kit full of toilet jokes, the least impressive of which features a stalk of celery in a way no one ever intended for it to be used. Funny? Maybe. But only heroic in term of failure. MacGruber runs 90 minutes and is rated R for strong crude and sexual content, violence, language and some nudity. I give this film 1/2 of a star out of four. Dastan is the opposite of MacGruber. He’s sleek, buff, and, as played by Jake Gyllenhaal, cute as a button. He’s probably the only reason that a movie like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time appears on anyone’s radar. He’s the type of hero that

actors have to train physically to play. It’s all weight training, protein dieting, and cardio for Dastan. But the character has other appeal, too. He uses two swords instead of one (oooh!). And he carries those curved scimitars in a clever sheath on his back. That never fails to look like fun. Dastan can hold his own in a battle against assassins, rescue princesses (like Bond girl Gemma Arterton), and (allegedly, because I haven’t seen the whole thing) turn back time. The desert rat’s hectic schedule must be part of the reason he never bothers to trim his hair or shave that itchy looking stubble. Judging my low box office returns and poor Wordof-Mouth, if Dastan is truly a hero, he’s one that won’t be very well remembered as soon as next week. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time runs 116 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence. I offer no rating, having only seen an extended portion of the film.

"Sex and the City 2" in for long haul Summer films aimed primarily at male audience

LOS A N GE L E S (A P ) — Ta lk about an anticlimax. Hurt by withering reviews and perhaps some bad timing, “Sex and the City 2” — despite i t s p e d i g re e — c a m e i n t h i rd place on its opening weekend, grossing less money over five days than the original made in three. But looking toward a summer dominated by testosteronef u e l e d f i l m s , Wa r n e r B ro s . i s hoping the sequel has legs as long as Carrie and her fashionista friends. And depending on those legs, the studio is not ruling out a third go at it. Dan Fellman, the studio’s head of distribution, acknowledged that many of the women the film targets may have had other plans over Memorial Day weekend. But he also figures his is the only female-driven movie over the

next few weeks of summer. Including its Thursday opening, “Sex and the City 2” made $51 million in its first five days, while the original took in $56.8 million in its first three days in 2008 — when tickets w e r e l e s s m o n e y. I t c a m e i n third behind “Shrek Forever After” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” T h e c o m e d y, b a s e d o n t h e beloved and influential HBO series, follows longtime friends Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) as they travel to Abu Dhabi on an all-expenses-paid adventure. Paul Dergarabedian, boxo ff i c e a n a l y s t f o r H o l l y w o o d . com, called it “a headscratcher” that the sequel’s opening numbers weren’t bigger. Expectations were high, especially since the original had the biggest opening ever for an R-rated comedy on its way to making nearly $153 million domestically alone. “It was a surprise. I think everyone had it pegged to be the No. 1 film of the weekend,” he said. “Pretty much every

woman I talked to could not wait to see the movie. Even if they didn’t think the movie would be that great, they wanted to go for the camaraderie, the experience, the girls’ night out. It turns out Memorial Day weekend was a m u c h m o re f a m i l y o r i e n t e d weekend.” Fellman said he wanted to open on a weekend when there were no other female-driven movies: “Sex and the City 2” competed against the video game adaptation “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” as w e l l a s h o l d o v e r s l i k e “ S h re k Forever After” — which ended u p s t a y i n g a t N o . 1 — “ I ro n Man 2” and “Robin Hood.” This week, the new releases include “Get Him to the Greek,” a Judd Apatow-produced comedy that’s a spin-off from “ F o rg e t t i n g S a r a h M a r s h a l l ” ; the horror movie “Splice”; and the action-comedy “Killers,” starring Katherine Heigl and A s h t o n K u t c h e r, w h i c h i s n ’ t b e i n g s h o w n t o c r i t i c s b e f o re opening day. Plus, it’s a sequel, so the four years of pent-up excitement for the original film following the TV series finale no longer exists. “I think with ‘Sex and t h e C i t y, ’ t h e f i r s t o n e w a s such a novelty: the bigscreen manifestation of the characters they love so much,” Dergarabedian said. “Sometimes with a sequel, it’s a little bit of diminishing returns.” A s f or t h e mo v i e ’ s n e g a t i ve critical reception, Fellman said: “Great reviews are always good b u t t h i s i s a f r a n c h i s e w h e re we have such a strong fan base. ... Dining Delights

Fond Fresh, Local, Delicious

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge O p e n i n g a re s t a u r a n t i s a challenge. Opening an upscale restaurant is even more so. Few see success and many times don’t make it past the year mark. Fond has proven those common statistics to be incorrect. Since opening in 2008, Fond has made a name for itself not only in the local realm, but “foodies” across the river are talking about Fond, too. Last year, Fond was voted “Best New Restaurant” by Sauce Magazine, which is actually a vote taken from the opinion of their readers. So the word about Fond has gotten around. S e r v i n g i n d i v i d u a l e n t re e s , “Sunday Supper,” brunch and a “market menu,” there is sure to be something for everyone cooking up in the Fond kitchen. The decor is elegant, yet not overstated. White linen table clothes, comfortable modern seating, simple candle light, and a relaxing color scheme, the dining room is a nice spot for a romantic dinner or even a business meeting.

June 10, 2010

Owner and chef Amy Zupanci, knows the local clientele pretty well, as she is an Edwardsville native. She trained at the Culinary Institute of America and worked in New York and under Gerard Craft at the St. Louis restaurant Niche. It is important to Zupanci to bring local fare to the table, and she tries very hard to support local farmers. Lately, some of her produce has come from 2 Acre Farm in Carlinville. 2 Acre Farm (Facebook2 Acre Farm) is owned by Aimee Arseneaux-Payne and her husband Nathan, who started growing their own produce and have found a customer in Fond. Zupanci can be found on many a Saturday morning browsing the Goshen Market for fresh locally grown produce. The great thing about Fond’s menu isn’t just the fresh quality of their food, but the fact that it changes often, depending on what is available from the local growers. On a recent visit, the “market menu” included: “Wild Salmon Crudo” – fingerling potatoes, creme fraiche, chives, preserved lemon with the wild salmon. “Roasted Asparagus” – which also includes a sunny sideup egg, parmesan, and a square of five grain toast. “Sea Scallop” with a bed of hummus, cumin-coriander carrots and a charmoula broth. “Pork Loin” – with tempura sugar peas and romesco. A “ChocolateStrawberry Tart” was the finishing touch, topped with chamomile cream. The “Market Menu” is $50. Each selection suggests a different wine pairing you may want to try with your meal. However, if you would like the wine steward to pair your wines, you can add that to your meal for an additional $25. If you are more of an ala carte type person, the selection is not lacking. Start off with “Steak Tartare” including capers, shallot, charred

scallion mayonnaise, moutarde violette, and potato gaufrettes. “Beet and Goat Cheese Napoleon” includes baby greens, pickled spring onion, radish, quail eggs, cucumbers, and green goddess dressing. Or for your second course, you might choose “Wild Columbia River Salmon” with caramelized fennel, fingerling potatoes, bouillabaisse sauce, “Gnocchi” – Italian beef, spinach, melted leeks, creme fraiche or “Carrot Risotto” with sugar peas and parmesan tuile. M o s t o f t h e a p p e t i z e r s a re between $10 and $12 and entrees vary from low $20s to high $20s. It isn’t just food creations that Fond diners experience. The Fond cocktails are creations in themselves. Maybe try an “Orange Blossom” green tea infused orange liqueur, club soda and an orange twist. Or maybe, “Sweet ‘n Salty Dog” with Prairie Organic Vodka, fresh squeezed ruby red grapefruit juice, superfine sugar and sea salt rim. Try a “Cucumber-Mint Gimlet” – Hendrick’s gin, English cucumbers, fresh lime juice and mint. Or treat yourself to a “Lavender Refresher” f r e s h l a v e n d e r, S t . G e r m a i n elderflower liqueur, Pisco, and fizzy water. So many to choose from. Fond also has a large wine selection, a full bar, and a number of craft beer selections for your beverage enjoyment. As stated earlier, Fond’s menu changes often, so you may want to call ahead and ask for the day’s selections. Reservations are suggested and may be made by visiting their Web site at www. fondfinedining.com and selecting the reservation tab, or by calling 656-9001. They are located at 106 North Main St. in downtown Edwardsville.

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts, but Bobby’s has a following in

June 10, 2010

Madison County that most people know. Great custard, great carmel apples, lots of selections and more. Strawanna and the Bobby’s Turtle are some of the favorite selections. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover! St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it! El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!” Big Daddy’s Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They

offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Northside Dairy Haven Edwardsville 4 stars This seasonal drive-in has been part of the Edwardsville landscape for nearly 50 years. Still famous for their Charco Burger, they also have an array of other sandwiches and barbecue plate specials. The prices cannot be beat! Fiona’s Family Restaurant Edwardsville 4 stars S p e c i a l s e a c h d a y, l o t s o f selections, great breakfast. Service is fast and food is hot. Very friendly environment where you won’t spend a lot to get a great meal. Bella Milano Edwardsville 4 stars Quickly becoming a legend in Edwardsville, Bella Milano is a favorite for many. Great dining atmosphere and lots of good Italian food and drink. Come hungry with loose fitting clothing. Bull and Bear Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars A sports bar and grill with that offers bar side and dining room seating. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, seafood, pizza, and a kid’s menu make it family friendly, yet a great hangout for friends. Buffalo Wild Wings Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars If you like wings, this is a great place for you. Other selections of appetizers, sandwiches and mostly bar fare round out the menu. A little pricey for wings, but if you gotta havem’ you gotta havem’. Service is kind of a toss up. Has been good, has been slow. 47 Port Street Grill Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 5 stars This is a fantastic, fabulous steak house that is a great date night or special group night out. The steaks are perfect, the lobster delectable, the sea bass melts in your mouth, and the fresh pastries are world class. The ambiance is straight out of the “Rat Pack” scene. Amazing wine selections, but any drink available. Prices are a bit steep, but a memorable feast for that special occasion. Falcon Diner Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 4 stars This top notch diner serves more

than typical diner fare and you will not leave hungry. With their “Happy Days” decor and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menue that includes a one pound chicken fried steak and burgers made to order, you will have to ask for a doggy bag. Their bakery counter is so popular, they had to give it a place of its own outside the diner so passers by can enjoy the magic also. Bartolino’s Osteria St. Louis 5 stars Italian cuisine at its best. Elegant dining with a decor reminiscent of the glamours ‘40s. Most of the traditional Italian dishes but additional gourmet Italian fare that is fantastic to the pallet. The Linguine Pinoli, includes shrimp, mushrooms, spinach, pine nuts, lemon butter and garlic, is a tasty combination over fresh linguine. The bread is fresh and wonderful. A little pricier than a family restaurant, but well worth the price for a nice date night or special night out. Boat House Restaurant Forest Park, St. Louis 3 1/2 stars A fun place to dine, whether you are out on a nice spring afternoon or want a great place t o e a t b e f o r e a M u n y s h o w. Serving brunch ever Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; lunch everyday,

dinner Tues. - Sun. starting at 3 p.m. Choose from an array of signature sandwiches, pizzas, appetizers, salads, and more. There is a kids menu and you can pull up the pooch to the table, inside or outside, as they are pet friendly. Jump in a paddle boat and take a cruise to work off the good food. Best Steak House St. Louis St. Louis 1 star Maybe it is the price (very cheap), maybe it is “shouting out” your order, maybe it is just the ambiance of the noisy, a bit chaotic atmosphere that draws people to Best Steak House, but some of those reasons are exactly why I wouldn’t return. Not to mention the poor quality of “steak” they serve. Many people love it, so try it for yourself. Right across from the Fox Theatre. Bandana’s Barbecue Collinsville 4 stars Bandana’s is one our family favorites. Excellent food, excellent prices, great service. Their smoked meats have a great smoky flavor and are so tender. The sauce choices are the best. You have the choice of two sides, but I love their cole slaw. Their garlic toast is fabulous! Come hungry, loosen the belt on the way out.

Dining Delights A healthy bread that comes hot off the grill NEW YORK (AP) – Want to transform pizza from greasy to healthy? You can start by leaving off the cheese. In fact, most of time it’s the toppings that turn pizza into junk food. Add sausage, pepperoni or bacon and your favorite pie by turns into a fat and calorie catastrophe. It isn’t hard, however, to end up with a relatively healthy meal, especially when making it at home. For lighter toppings stick with veg e t a b l e s , s t a r t i n g w i t h t h e traditional tomato sauce. Tomatoes are loaded with healthy antioxidants such as lycopene, plus they’re high in flavor and fat-free. If you want to skip the sauce, you can make a white pizza sauce by pureeing roasted garlic cloves with a small amount of extra-virgin olive oil. As for meat toppers, stay away from the greasy sausage and pepperoni. Prosciutto is satisfying and has a great salty flavor, but is much less fatty than bacon. If your heart is set on sausage, choose lower-fat turkey versions or even try vegetarian sausage crumbles, which are surprisingly tasty. You can find vegetarian sausage with other meat substitutes, usually in the produce or frozen foods sections. Finally, for additional nutrients and dietary fiber, include some whole-wheat flour in the dough. This grilled summer herb and olive focaccia gets intense flavor from fresh rosemary and thyme along with a handful of chopped Kalamata olives layered into the crust. Grilling a pizza, focaccia or flatbread gives it a great smoky flavor and lets you avoid heating up your kitchen in summer. But if you like, you can bake this at 450 F for 12 to 15 minutes. To make this light flatbread even easier to prepare, you can use a 1 1/2-pound ball of store-bought white or wheat pizza dough for the crust. GRILLED SUMMER HERB AND OLIVE FOCACCIAS Start to finish: 1 hour (25 minutes active) Servings: 8 For the dough: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) quickrising yeast 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil 3/4 warm water For the topping: 1/4 cup pitted and chopped Kalamata olives 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme In a food processor with a bread blade, combine both flours, the yeast, salt and sugar. Pulse to mix.

Grilled summer herb and olive focaccia. Fresh off the grill, this focaccia has a smoky flavor along with a tasty handful of Kalamata olives layered into the crust. In a measuring cup, combine the oil and water. With the food processor running, gradually pour the liquid through the feed tube. If the mixture is too dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of additional warm water. Process until the dough forms a ball, then process for 1 minute more to knead. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 15 minutes before rolling. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut the dough into 4 pieces and roll out into circles. Sprinkle each piece of dough with some of the olives, then fold in half and then in quarters to incorporate the olives into the dough. Roll each ball of dough out again into a circle and place on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with a clean dishtowel and let rise at room temperature for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat a gas grill to high on one side and medium-low on the other. Set 2 of the dough circles on the hot side of the grill and cook until the underside is golden brown, about 6 to 8 minutes. Keep a close eye on the color, as grill temperatures vary widely. Using tongs, flip the crusts to the cooler side of the grill, brush with olive oil, sprinkle with some of the herbs and close the lid of the grill. Cook, rotating once or twice, until hot and crisp. Repeat w i t h t h e re m a i n i n g p i e c e s o f dough, olive oil and herbs. Cut each focaccia in half to serve. ••• Most chicken burgers suffer from a dry, mealy texture, qualities that don’t quite scream summer grilling fun. Blame the bird. Ground chicken generally has little or no fat. So by the time you’re done manhandling ground chicken into a patty and tossing it on the grill, you end up with a pretty forgettable burger. You could keep it moist by adding cheese. Of course, if you’re just adding saturated fat, why not just do a beef burger? CURRIED CHICKEN BURGERS WITH CHIVE MAYO

Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 / 2 t e a s p o o n g ro u n d b l a c k pepper 1/2 teaspoon curry powder 1 1/4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into large chunks 4 hamburger buns 1 avocado, pitted, peeled and thinly sliced Heat a grill to medium. Oil the grates, or coat them with cooking spray. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ginger and chives. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, garlic powder, salt, black pepper and curry powder. In a food processor, pulse the chicken breasts until well chopped but still chunky, about 10 seconds total. Scrape the sides of the bowl and pulse again if any large pieces remain. Transfer the chopped chicken to the bowl with the egg mixture, then mix well. Form the meat into 4 loose patties. They will be moist and not hold together well. Use a spatula to carefully place the burgers on the grill and cook, covered, for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the burgers — they should be firm enough to move easily now — and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes, or until an instant thermometer reads 165 F at the thickest part of the burgers. To serve, place each burger on a bun, then top with mayonnaise and avocado.

Television

3rd Annual

A teenage boy – and then some NEW YORK (AP) — From those to whom much is given, much is expected. That even applies to the seemingly shortchanged 15-yearold RJ Berger, who sizes himself up for the audience as “scrawny and weird-looking, awkward and pale.” T h e h e ro o f t h e n e w M T V scripted comedy “The Hard Times of RJ Berger,” he follows in a rich TV tradition of winsome misfit adolescents — kids with smarts, c re a t i v i t y a n d s p u n k l u r k i n g just beneath the surface of their systematic victimhood. But RJ comes with a bonus tucked away in his boxer shorts: He’s extremely well-endowed. Thus does “Hard Times” raise issues that consume males from their early adolescence onward: How much is big enough? Why don’t I have more? Why is life so unfair? A show aimed at teen and twentysomething guys (plus girls with their own interest in the subject), “Hard Times” portrays the ultimate wish fulfillment of its primary audience, while reminding the viewer that no blessing comes without a cost. Here is a young man whose gift (never witnessed by viewers, of course, and thus enhanced e v e n m o re i n t h e m i n d ’ s e y e ) is plenty big enough, and then some. And yet, doggonit, RJ’s life isn’t perfect. For RJ, a large penis is as much a curse as a blessing, as much a burden as an object of pride. As what could be described as “The Wonder Years” meets “Boogie Nights,” the 12-episode series premieres Sunday at 11 p.m. EDT following “The MTV Movie Awards.” It focuses on RJ’s relatable misadventures in high school, as well as his relatable ambivalence about his manhood, however much the physical evidence might scream “case closed!” “Hard Times” bears a passing resemblance to HBO’s “Hung.” In that drama series, which returns for its second season June 27, a

financially struggling family man and high school teacher becomes a male prostitute. But RJ, who is played with understated forbearance by Paul Iacono, isn’t nearly so desperate. His struggles are more those of selfacceptance and gaining acceptance of his fellow teens. RJ is free to stew over such dilemmas in private until, in the premiere, the cat (so to speak) is out of the bag. In a wardrobe malfunction during a basketball game, his secret is exposed to the whole student body. RJ’s nerdy, marginal presence is instantly revised among all who behold him. From now on, it seems, he will be identified on campus with a blend of envy, jeering and a bit of the yuck factor. What might very well serve as an advantage is also likely to further stigmatize him. The long and the short of it: What is expected of RJ is how to deal with his package deal. RJ’s best friend, the sex-obsessed and sex-deprived Miles (Jareb Dauplaise) is thrilled to learn of RJ’s previously undisclosed bounty. Miles bets he will seem desirable to girls by mere association. “It’s our golden ticket!” Miles rejoices. After the revelation, RJ’s stalkerish hanger-on Lily (Kara Taitz) is all the more interested in RJ. But his sole, unrequited love interest remains the beautiful Jenny (Amber Lancaster), whose boyfriend is Max (Jayson Blair), the meanest jock in school. Now Max gives RJ more grief than before, mocking him (jealously?) as a freak. Meanwhile, a friendship blossoms between RJ and sweet Jenny, who by chance are paired as study buddies. It’s a friendship challenged in the third episode when, playing the romantic leads in the school musical, they share a kiss. RJ’s sudden onstage tumescence literally stops the show. But “Hard Times” isn’t totally fixated on RJ’s phallus.
