Sacred Melanesian wood carvings on display at Lambert Airport For The Edge

S

ago bowls, a wave splitter, spirit board, and crocodile canoe prow are just a few of the intricately carved Melanesian art pieces on exhibition at the Lambert Gallery in St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The William and Florence Schmidt Art Center at Southwestern Illinois College is presenting the exhibition titled, Function & Ceremony: The Art of Melanesia. Each item provides a practical function of daily living for the people of Melanesia, while simultaneously serving a sacred and often ceremonial function. Every swirl, embellishment, or animal depiction has a spiritual or sacred purpose or meaning. Informative labels in the exhibition space bring insight as to the history of each

piece, how it was used, and its religious significance. Melanesia is considered to be a sub region of Oceania, consisting of four countries: Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, as well as the territories of West Papua and New Caledonia. In such a small region, there are more than 1000 languages, the densest rate of languages in relation to landmass on Earth. The indigenous populations are divided amongst hundreds of small-scale societies, ranging from a few dozen to 200,000 people, and these societies are often completely cut off from each other due to the extreme topography of the lands. Function & Ceremony: The Art of Melanesia is on display in the Lambert Gallery, located near the C Gates exit, through November 17, 2017. This exhibition is part of the Lambert Art and Culture Program, with support by the Regional Arts Commission.

The Lambert Art and Culture Program curates and commissions works of art that elevate the visitor experience, generate regional pride, and sustain the vibrant local arts community. The Lambert Art and Culture Program is guided by the Airport Art Advisory Committee: Lisa Cakmak, Associate Curator of Ancient Art at Saint Louis Art Museum; Ellen Gale, Executive Director of Clayton Chamber of Commerce; Shelly Hagen, Curator of Corporate Art Resources at Wells Fargo; Leslie Markle, Curator for Public Art at Washington University; Kiku Obata, President & CEO for Kiku Obata & Company; Roseann Weiss, Director of Community and Public Arts at the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis; and Carlos Zamora, Creative Director at Express Scripts. Please visit www.ArtofTravelSTL.com to learn more about the Lambert Art and Culture Program, see the latest art installations, and get exciting event details for the Airport’s annual art fundraising gala.

packages of desalting chemicals, a seawater desalter kit, two survival lights, a machete and two bottles of sunscreen. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Visor: Buzz Aldrin wore this outer helmet while on the surface of the moon. It fit over his clear pressure-bubble helmet. • Aldrin’s Extravehicular Gloves: These gloves have an outer, cutresistant shell of Chromel-R fabric across the hands to prevent fatal air leaks caused by handling sharp objects and gauntlets to protect against solar heating. The blue fingertips were made of silicone rubber to provide more sensitivity for touching. Vescolani said, “‘Destination Moon’ will help visitors of all ages to appreciate the accomplishment of the Moon Landing and all of the work that went into making it happen. We hope the exhibition inspires our guests to think about what is next in space discovery. Perhaps one of them will play a role in exploring Mars and beyond.” Saint Louis Science Center The mission of the Saint Louis Science Center is to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning. Named a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate in 2016, the Saint Louis Science Center features more than 700 interactive exhibits, as well as a fivestory OMNIMAX Theater, Boeing Hall and the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. For more information about the Saint Louis Science Center, please visit slsc.org.

The Saint Louis Science Center is proud to announce that it is one of four science museums nationwide to host “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition will feature the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, marking the first time in 46 years the module has left the museum, as well as 20 artifacts from the historic mission. After the exhibition tour, the artifacts will return to the Smithsonian for a new exhibition, also titled “Destination Moon,” which will open in 2020. “Destination Moon” will be at the Saint Louis Science Center from April 14 to Sept. 3, 2018. The 49th anniversary of the moon landing is July 20, 2018. “St. Louis played a vital role in the Space Race, with McDonnellDouglas serving as a key leader in the development of the Mercury and Apollo mission technology,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO. “We are honored to have the opportunity to host this exhibition, which represents an iconic period in our country’s history. We are the only museum in the Midwest to host this exhibition, which is so special for the city of St. Louis. We feel very honored because we know that for many people this will be a once- in-alifetime chance to see these artifacts.” In addition to the Apollo 11 command module Columbia, the only portion of the historic spacecraft to complete the first mission to land a man on the moon and safely return him to Earth, the exhibition will feature: • Star Chart: The chart shows the positions of the sun, moon and stars at the time Apollo 11 was scheduled to leave Earth’s orbit and head for the moon. • Rucksack #1, Survival Kit: One of two rucksacks filled with equipment to help the crew survive for up to 48 hours in the event of an emergency landing somewhere on Earth. The kit includes three water containers, a radio beacon and spare battery, three pairs of sunglasses, six

People People planner Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the worldfamous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017. Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between. As the road meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous motes. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road. Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west. Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 Park-In Theatre. Artifacts include neon signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer. Route 66 opened on Nov. 11, 1926, as the major highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants west to find a new life. It carried military transports through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California. Route 66 bore witness to the rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps. By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete. The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that. Although Route 66 is long gone, relics of it still remain across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an adventure and momand-pop diners and motels ruled the road. Admission is free. The Missouri History Museum is located in Forest Park. For more information, visit www. mohistory.org.

"Wakefield"

"Baywatch"

Have you ever fantasized about one day walking away from your well-ordered life? Just ditching work and the humdrum routine of life? You have? Then, before you go, you need to see the curiously brilliant film "Wakefield." Bryan Cranston stars as Howard Wakefield, a successful, upper class suburbanite with a wife and kids who, on an otherwise ordinary day, doesn't come home from work. He effectively drops out of life. No, "Wakefield " isn't a story about running away. Our hero actually chooses to stay very close to his family — he hides in his home's unheated garage attic and scrounges for food in Dumpsters. He spends the next several months quietly spying on the life he has removed himself from. "I ask you: What is so sacrosanct about a marriage and a family that you should have to live in it day after day, however unrealized that life may be?" he asks. "Who hasn't had the impulse to just put that life on hold for a moment?" "Wakefield" is directed by Robin Swicord from her adaptation of E.L. Doctorow's short story. Her film is a moody meditation on modern living and surveillance, true to the original 10,000-word tale but also beautifully cinematic. It taps into a deep vein of American angst at social conformity, explored before by everyone from Henry David Thoreau to "American Beauty." It arrives at a time when there's a surge in interest in a more natural life far from the crowds — so-called "cabin porn." But the suburban cabin Wakefield finds himself leads to a brutal, unromantic life. Forever peering down into the main house's windows, Wakefield must endure freezing New York winters and its blistering summer days. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for some sexual material and language." RUNNING TIME: 109 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three star out of four.

Of this, dear moviegoer, rest assured: Dwayne Johnson's biceps still ripple and glisten in the sunlight. So do his triceps, pecs, abs, delts, quads, lats and the other 600 or so muscles of the human body. And that charismatic, multi-million dollar grin? Still there, too. But the dude isn't a magician. And only a true magician could find a way to make something light and fun and fresh out of the unwieldy, derivative and mostly unfunny endeavor that is "Baywatch." Now, maybe the filmmakers weren't thinking light and fun and fresh. They opted to make an R-rated film, upping the raunch factor of the '90s TV series starring David Hasselhoff and a slo-mo running Pamela Anderson. But the R rating doesn't mean they've gone all dark and deep; it just seems to mean lots of raunchy language, humping gags and extended crotch shots. That last category includes a centerpiece scene in which our two leading men, Johnson and Zac Efron, play around with a penis on a corpse in a morgue. Yes, that's actually what they do. Let's try to wipe that image out of our brains now, shall we? "Baywatch," directed by Seth Gordon, begins by establishing the heart and brawn of our main guy, Mitch Buchannon, leader of the Baywatch squad and hometown hero. We see him hurtling into the water to save a kitesurfer from certain death. Running along the beach, he ducks into a basketball game to expertly block a shot. He passes an adoring beachgoer building an elaborate sand sculpture of him. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, crude sexual content, and graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales"

"Wonder Woman " has been the subject of so much superfluous fuss, it'd be easy to forget that behind all of the hand-wringing and both symbolic and real pressure to succeed there's actually a movie meant to entertain. Yet, like the heroine at its center, "Wonder Woman" the movie rises with powerful grace above the noise. It's not perfect, but it's often good, sometimes great and exceptionally re-watchable. Director Patty Jenkins' film is so threaded with sincerity and goodness it's a wonder how it got past the pugnacious minds responsible for what's come before. "Wonder Woman" evokes not only the spirit of Richard Donner's "Superman," but also Joe Johnston's "Captain America: The First Avenger," while still being its own thing. Just look to the image of Gal Gadot confidently striding out alone onto an unwinnable battlefield with only a shield, a sword and a mission — and prevailing. It's enough to give you goosebumps. "Wonder Woman" is structured as a coming-of-age story about how Diana, the Amazonian princess, becomes Wonder Woman. It's framed, clumsily, as an over two hour flashback provoked by a note from Bruce Wayne. Of all the stupid interconnected universe things! Thankfully, Jenkins transitions quickly into the actual story about a naive idealist who comes to accept the complexities of mankind. From a tender age, Diana, living on the achingly idyllic island of Themyscira, dreams of being a warrior. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) disapproves, although she inexplicably withholds the real reason. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content." RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

The opening scene of the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" is a fitting metaphor for where we stand in this long franchise: A creaky old galleon is unceremoniously yanked up from the ocean depths and the only things aboard are cranky old ghosts. A weary, battered fifth chapter — "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" — lumbers into theaters this summer high on GCI tricks but with a hopelessly muddled plot and recurring characters basically running on fumes. Johnny Depp is back as Jack Sparrow, as is Geoffrey Rush as a well-bearded Barbossa, looking a lot like the Cowardly Lion, and his faithful capuchin monkey. Newcomers include Golshifteh Farahani as a pretty cool, punky witch, and Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites, who play young star-crossed lovers with serious daddy issues, adding vitality and maybe future franchise possibilities. The bad guy this time is Javier Bardem as a ghost ship captain and he proves to be an extraordinary actor because he comes across as a very believable ghost ship captain. His full-throttled, single-minded fury recalls Ricardo Montalban in "The Wrath of Khan." RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some suggestive content and adventure violence." RUNNING TIIME: 128 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

"It Comes at Night"

"It Comes at Night " has the title of a horror film and, at times, the mood of one, but it is far too restrained to get the juices of the genre crowd going. That's not an accident or a mistake, however. More likely, it's a cheeky riff on the leaden, generic titles of so many jump-scare films before it. The "It" in writer and director Trey Edward Shults' "It Comes at Night" might be the deadly disease that's turned an isolated family into ruthless survivalists or the actual intruder that upends their lives; but it could just as well be the crippling and overwhelming power of doubt and paranoia. If that's any indication, it shouldn't be a surprise then that "It Comes at Night" is a psychological thriller that is more likely to haunt than scare. That's not to say there aren't some moments that might make you yelp. Shults, in only his second feature following his splashy debut with the family psychodrama "Krisha," stylishly and effectively builds tension and mystery in this strippeddown experiment that crescendos occasionally into the stuff of nightmares. It's centered on one family, Paul (Joel Edgerton), Sarah (Carmen Ejogo), their teenage son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and their dog Stanley. They live in a big house deep in the woods and entirely alone. There's some sort of disease going around in the world outside of their protected fortress, and it's turned people crazy and desperate. The disease itself, which hits quickly and is highly contagious, is barely explained. It's also possible that it's scarcely understood by these people. Nevertheless, they've decided that strict isolationism is the only means for survival. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for violence, disturbing images, and language." RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie"

With a title like "Captain Underpants," you expect kidfriendly fart jokes and toilet humor. What you may not expect is a sweet story that touches on adult loneliness, the importance of arts education and how laughter and friendship are life essentials at any age. Based on the popular children's book series, "Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie " condenses four volumes into one brisk and colorful tale, but no prior knowledge of the books or characters is necessary. Honestly, you don't even need to bring a kid with you to have fun watching this film. The story centers on fourth graders Harold and George, who are best friends and the most popular pranksters at Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. When they aren't playing tricks or being admonished by mean-spirited Principal Krupp, they're hanging out in George's treehouse writing comic books. That's where they come up with their signature superhero, the dimwitted but joyous Captain Underpants. Imagining kooky adventures for their caped character keeps the boys creating comics and laughing for hours — sometimes in class, which draws ire from the already-angry Principal Krupp. He's determined to catch Harold and George misbehaving, and threatens to put them in separate classrooms when he does. In a desperate attempt to avoid punishment, the boys hypnotize Krupp and convince him he's actually the valiant Captain Underpants. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mild rude humor throughout." RUNNING TIME: 89 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

The "It" in writer and director Trey Edward Shults' "It Comes at Night" might be the deadly disease that's turned an isolated family into ruthless survivalists or the actual intruder that upends their lives; but it could just as well be the crippling and overwhelming power of doubt and paranoia. If that's any indication, it shouldn't be a

surprise then that "It Comes at Night" is a psychological thriller that is more likely to haunt than scare. That's not to say there aren't some moments that might make you yelp. Shults, in only his second feature following his splashy debut with the family psychodrama "Krisha," stylishly and effectively builds tension and mystery in this stripped-down experiment that crescendos occasionally into the stuff of nightmares. It's centered on one family, Paul (Joel Edgerton), Sarah (Carmen Ejogo), their teenage son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and their dog Stanley. They live in a big house deep in the woods and entirely alone. There's some sort of disease going around in the world outside of their protected fortress,

and it's turned people crazy and desperate. The disease itself, which hits quickly and is highly contagious, is barely explained. It's also possible that it's scarcely understood by these people. Nevertheless, they've decided that strict isolationism is the only means for survival. Still, something has managed to penetrate their barricade and made the grandfather ill. This is how the movie starts — with a stark image of a dying, decaying face. They bury him out back and thus are already on edge when someone breaks into their home as they sleep. Before they can even take a look at the trespasser's face, Paul has already beat him to a pulp and tied him to a tree where he spends the night wailing. P a u l d o e s n ' t t r u s t t h i s m a n , Wi l l

(Christopher Abbott), but after it's established that he is not sick and is merely looking for water for his wife (Riley Keough) and kid (Griffin Robert Faulkner), the main family decides that the only option is to invite this new threesome to stay with them. They figure they can't let them go now that they know where they live, so might as well band together. As you might imagine, everything goes great in this away-from-the-apocalypse outpost for a while, but there is feeling that something is not quite right. Or maybe it's just in their heads. Much of the weirdness comes from Travis, who is living out an already fraught time in life (the teen years) in a particularly fraught moment (the possible end of days?).

Count on a "Wonder Woman" sequel By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge The Wonder Woman character first appeared in 1941, meaning that seventy-six years elapsed before she earned her way into a major motion picture focusing purely on her and her elaborate, e x c i t i n g b a c k - s t o r y. F r a n k l y, that's shocking, but the historical context of the superhero movie boon in which we find ourselves belies just what that means. T h i n k a b o u t i t . S p i d e r- m a n , who's about to be rebooted for a third go 'round, didn't make i t u n t i l 2 0 0 2 . Te n y e a r s a g o stalwarts like The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers were only names muttered by fans of actual paper comic books. The X-Men were huge in the 2000s and remain so today, but it you

really want to go back to the heart of this genre, it comes down to the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. They're the only ones that pre-date 1990. I assure you that misogyny is alive and well in the entertainment industry, but I don't think that angry-ing up your blood over this particular glass ceiling is the right course of action. It's a good movie, one that at times sparkles, but hardly re s e t s m y S u p e rh e ro F a t i g u e (trademark pending) meter, I'm sorry to say. The best things about "Wonder Woman" are its setting and its cast, but not always in that order. Director Patty Jenkins and a screenwriting team led by DC guru Zack Snyder put the action of this movie in the heart of World War I where Amazonian Prince Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot)

finds herself up to her shiny battle boots in defending democracy f ro m t h e c l u t c h e s o f G e n e r a l Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and his chemist madwoman, Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya). Those two are both nefarious and so over-the-top that they just ooze 'villain'. Joining Diana on her first foray into the world of men is American aviator and spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). I don't want to knock Pine, who is so charismatic that his dimples make me sick, but why are all white bread heroes these days named 'Steve' and played by actors named 'Chris'? Google it. Otherwise, this is a fantastic way to introduce a bunch of new faces into a crowded landscape that is making up the so-called "DC Extended Universe". The opening act features Diana growing up on

her hidden, matriarchal island home world, made into being by the love of her mother (Connie Nielsen) and the power of gods like Zeus and Aphrodite. She's trained as a warrior by her aunt ( R o b i n Wr i g h t ) . B u t i t ' s t h e compassion and determination of her own personality - keenly exhibited by the fierceness of Gadot's performance - that make Diana shine as a heroine for all people in all times. When she plucks Trevor from his watery plane crash, she's thrown into the war to end all wars by his pleas for help, while under the power of her Lasso of Truth. There's a playfulness to the relationship between Diana and Steve Trevor. The chemistry between the two actors, especially during a few suggestive scenes early in the picture, really crackles.

June 15, 2017

A sturdy opening weekend gross ($103M+) ensures that Diana will return in her own sequels, probably for many years to come, but the character will be a major component in November's "Justice League" showpiece with Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman, and a bunch of other exciting new characters teaming up to, um, save the world. If that movie is half as cool as this one, and you can reference the scene where an entrenched Diana stares down a machine gun to the tune of Led Zepplin's "Immigrant Song" for fact checking, then we could be in for a real treat. "Wonder Woman" runs 141 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content. I give this two and a half stars out of four.

Gaza Strip short on jobs, freedom

BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip (AP) — Grim records mark the 10th anniversary of Hamas rule in Gaza — the longest-ever daily electricity and water cuts, 60 percent youth unemployment, and a rising backlog of thousands waiting for a rare chance to exit the blockaded territory. Unable to offer a remedy, the Islamic militant group has been doubling down on oppression. It has jailed the few who dare complain publicly, including the young organizers of a street protest against power cuts and an author who wrote on Facebook that "life is only pleasant for Hamas leaders." Polls show almost half the people would leave altogether if they could, but that support

for the group, despite three short, devastating wars with Israel, is steady at around a third. With potential opponents crushed, there is no obvious path to regime change. Meanwhile, for most of Gaza's 2 million people, life is bound to get worse. The international isolation of Hamas, which refuses to recognize Israel, will likely continue — and with it the border blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after the group seized Gaza in June 2007. A new political program that Hamas hoped would mollify the West and Arab nations instead underscored its ideological rigidity; while softer in tone, the manifesto reaffirms a call to armed struggle and the creation of an

Islamic state in historic Palestine, including what is now Israel. There are also signs that one of Hamas' remaining foreign backers, Qatar, is in trouble. On Monday, four Arab countries cut ties with the Gulf nation, in part over its support of Islamist groups, such as Hamas. Qatar reportedly asked several Hamas leaders-inexile to leave. Hamas also faces financial pressure by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose forces it drove from Gaza a decade ago. Fed up with failed reconciliation efforts, the West Bank-based Abbas has warned he would cut more Gaza subsidies, such as electricity payments.

Hamas spokesman Salah Bardaweel dismissed suggestions Hamas should step aside, but acknowledged a deal to improve Gaza's lot is unlikely as long as the 82-year-old Abbas, who runs autonomous enclaves in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, remains in power. He said Hamas was never given a chance to govern. "How do you hold someone accountable for a failure he did not create?" he said, referring to the blockade. Bardaweel was recently skewered on social media after asserting Gaza will remain "steadfast." Local writer Abdullah Abu Sharekh landed in jail after writing on Facebook that "people are not steadfast."

The Georgia Queen, soon to be rechristened as the Mary M. Miller, plies the Savannah River. Below, the deck of the ship.

For The Edge A new excursion riverboat has docked on the shores of Louisville Waterfront Park in Louisville, Ky. The new boat, formerly known as the Georgia Queen, will be christened the Mary M. Miller and begin her public cruising later this summer. She joins the Belle of Louisville on the Louisville Wharf. The riverboat’s new name is in honor of the first woman in the United States to receive a steamboat master’s license. Captain

Miller, who paved the way for women to become masters and pilots in the steamboat industry, was born in Louisville in 1846. Upon her retirement, Captain Miller and her husband returned to Louisville in 1891 to the house they had maintained in the Portland neighborhood. Mary Miller died in 1894, and is buried in the Portland Cemetery in the city. Louisville’s Portland Museum has a permanent animatronic display on Captain Miller at its facility at 2308 Portland Avenue. The new boat, formerly docked in Savannah, Ga., arrived in Louisville in late

April. She is undergoing a few minor maintenance tasks that include cleaning, painting, woodworking repair and a rehab of the main deck restroom to make it accessible. The boat will be able to host private events, and is perfect for casual gatherings, cocktail parties, and seated lunch or dinner service. Visit www.belleoflouisville.org or call 502.574.2992 for more information and schedule of cruises on the Mary M. Miller and the Belle of Louisville. Travel For The Edge The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) will open Extreme Ice, a new temporary exhibit illustrating the immediacy of climate change and how it is altering our world, on March 23, 2017. American photographer James Balog captured thought-provoking images over a multi-year period that showcase the dramatic extent of melting glaciers around the world. Through stunning photographic documentation and time-lapse videography of these glaciers, Extreme Ice provides guests an emotionally visual representation of climate change. This exhibit encourages and educates guests on how they can make a difference in their daily lives. Extreme Ice will run through early 2019. Balog is the founder and director of the Earth Vision Institute and Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), the most w i d e - r a n g i n g , g ro u n d - b a s e d , photographic study of glaciers. Extreme Ice features the EIS team’s global documentation of glacier melt—alongside other handson interactive and informative elements—to illustrate what is happening around the world at a rapid rate. “MSI has a responsibility to our guests, schools and communities to showcase exhibits that present complex scientific concepts in an accessible way,” said Dr. Patricia Ward, director of science and technology at MSI. “Extreme Ice showcases James Balog’s beautifully powerful photography to illustrate the real and alarming speed at which glaciers are melting around the world. The exhibit presents a unique and emotional way to educate guests about climate change.” Nearly 200,000 known glaciers have been mapped and catalogued around the world, according to an international team from the University of Colorado Boulder and Trent University in Ontario, Canada. Since the early 20th century most of them have been retreating due to the warming climate, according to the National Snow & Ice Data Center. Balog and his team used precisely engineered time-lapse cameras to

document 24 glaciers around the world, recording their dramatic changes, which are on display in the exhibit. His team’s compelling and high-resolution footage places guests directly into settings such as Glacier National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Alps, giving everyone a chance to see the real and alarming speed at which glaciers are melting around the world. “It is a privilege to showcase the Extreme Ice Survey at the Museum of Science and Industry, as it is vital to engage with new audiences about climate change,” Balog said. “Photography is one of the most powerful mediums of communication we have; visual evidence illuminates our world in a way that nothing else can.” Large-scale high-resolution photo prints in the exhibit depict scenes around the world, including: • Mount Kilimanjaro ice field in Tanzania, Africa, expected to melt

by 2060 • Trift Glacier in Switzerland, one of the fastest-retreating in the European Alps • Retreat of the Columbia Glacier in Alaska between 2009 and 2015 • Blue ponds formed by meltwater in Alaska’s Columbia Glacier • Retreat of the Bridge Glacier in Canada between 2009 and 2012 • Icebergs off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula • Mont Blanc in the French Alps, where many glaciers are quickly receding • Greenland “moulins,” when melting ice drains through the surface and into tunnels that release the water to the ocean • Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland • Grinnell Glacier in Montana’s Glacier National Park • Mount Everest in Nepal Artifacts on display include equipment and a customized

camera that Balog and his team used on their expeditions, helping guests to understand the physical demands that he and his team encountered traveling to these remote destinations. Guests will also learn about the technological advances James and his team created to capture such compelling footage. Other items on display include protective insulated clothing, helmets and climbing equipment. To f u r t h e r e m p h a s i z e a n d illustrate the effects of climate change, guests can also: • Touch and see a real 7-foottall ice wall, providing a physical connection to the footage in the exhibit • Interact with maps showcasing the potential impact of coastal flooding around the world, from N e w Yo r k C i t y t o S h a n g h a i , Copenhagen to London • See how rising temperatures will affect Chicago • Explore the work of other ice scientists throughout the world • Discover how bold individuals are single-handedly making radical impacts • Understand the part they can play in mitigating the effects of climate change Extreme Ice opens March 23, 2017 and runs through early 2019. It is included in Museum Entry ($18 for adults and $11 for kids 3-11). Buy tickets online in advance at msichicago.org. The Extreme Ice MSI exhibition team utilized a wide variety of scientific resources to inform its overall content as well as the specific information and visualizations displayed in the exhibition. MSI is grateful to the help of these universities, organizations and individuals for their insight.

For a full list, please see separate documented list in the press kit. Extreme Ice is presented by the Aunt Marlene Foundation with additional major support from the Malott Family Foundation. For perfect grilled food, take advantage of LongHorn Steakhouses Grill Us Hotline.

LongHorn offers grilling hotline

For The Edge Every LongHorn Steakhouse across the country has a team of expert Grill Masters specially trained in the art of grilling. This summer, these certified Grill Masters will share their expertise with at-home grillers to help them become masters of their own craft. LongHorn’s Grill Us Hotline will return for the fifth year, connecting guests directly with these top Grill Masters when they dial 1-855-LH-GRILL. Experts will be standing by on the days leading up to summer ’s biggest grilling holidays to help guests prepare for cookouts with family and friends. While the Memorial Day Weekend has passed, the Hotline will be live from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET on the following dates: Sunday, July 2 – for Fourth of July advice Sunday, September 3 – For Labor Day advice Over the past five years, Grill Masters have received a variety of questions from guests, ranging from grilling basics to hard-core techniques. As summer heats up, here are some of their top tips based on some of the most popular questions since the Grill Us Hotline began. Grill Open vs. Grill Closed: It depends on what’s going on the grill. For steaks, boneless chicken, pork, fish or vegetables, keep the grill lid open. Close it up if to make bone-in chicken or hamburgers. Grilling A Lot of Steaks at Once: Set up temperature zones on the grill. Designate a “hot zone,” and heat it to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, create a “warm zone” on

18

a quarter of the grill, and set the temperature between 100 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. When a steak reaches the right temperature, move it to the “warm zone” so it stays hot but doesn’t get overcooked. Making a Great Grill Seasoning: LongHorn restaurants have a secret blend, but a solid substitute is called “The Big Four.” Mix salt, pepper, granulated onion powder and granulated garlic powder. Pat the mixture into both sides of a cut of meat – and don’t be shy with the seasoning. To help make every grill-out successful, LongHorn has even more

Engage on Social Media: Guests can chat live with LongHorn for expert advice from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, seven days a week, on Facebook, Tw i t t e r a n d I n s t a g r a m . T h i s summer, LongHorn is also debuting an all-new Grill Hero Facebook Messenger, where fans have roundthe-clock access to mouthwatering recipes and grilling know-how tailored to their personal tastes. This new feature is now available on LongHorn’s Facebook page. Text “GRILL” to 55702: Guests can get some of LongHorn’s top tips and recipes delivered straight to their

Music Tuning in Rock of the '70s Tour planned

Four-famed acts will appear at The Family Arena in St. Charles on Oct. 14. Foghat’s live performances show why the band is still around today and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. Foghat fans are everywhere and these days their audience consists of all ages. From the young kids who play Guitar Hero III and know all of the lyrics to ‘Slow Ride’, to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the ‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8 track! Firefall was one of the first bands to bring the creative and musical richness of the Rocky Mountain area to the forefront of the industry. They helped spearhead the birth

and continuation of the country rock / folk rock sound of the 70's. The band continues to dazzle audiences with their exuberant and rocking performances - this was no 'light rock' band. FIREFALL is a group of exceptional musicians and singers, with a repertoire of recognizable songs few bands can match. Their many hits - "You Are The Woman," "Just Remember I Love You," "Strange Way," " Cinderella," "Mexico," " Livin' Ain't Livin'," " So Long," " Goodbye I Love You," " Sweet and Sour" and others - are faithfully recreated with a freshness rare in live performances of such classics. Formed from the cream of Atlanta’s studio musicians, the Atlanta Rhythm Section (actually hailing from nearby Doraville, Georgia) came together in 1970 after working on a Roy Orbison recording session. In 1977, “So In To You” became the band’s breakthrough single, reaching the U.S. Top 10, and the album from which it came, A Rock And Roll Alternative, went gold. Their platinum follow-up album, Champagne Jam, broke into the Top 10 in 1978, together with the blockbuster single “Imaginary Lover” (“I’m Not Gonna Let It
