Bridging the homework gap New education center will show parents the way By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Amie Hanneken spent five years teaching in North Carolina before moving to Edwardsville three years ago with her husband. When she began teaching at Lincoln Middle School, she immediately recognized that it was different here. While teaching in North Carolina, she said that there was very little parental help at home, but that here in Edwardsville it’s completely different. “Parents are incredibly helpful at home and they want to be able to help their children but they might not necessarily know how,” she said. Bridging that gap between parents wanting to help their children with homework and either not being able to communicate with them or not understanding the concepts they are learning was the catalyst for Hanneken’s new tutoring center, Building Bonds and Bridges Education Center that opened in Edwardsville on June 1. Hanneken’s education center is different from others in town because her classes bring together both the parent and the child into the tutoring class. “As parents we’ve been through high school and we’ve learned all the computation ways for math, but we forget about how to use manipulatives and different strategies for the little kids,” Hanneken said. Her goal is to change that by having parents revisit the curriculum with the child so that they can help their student. She also intends to show and teach parents different strategies that teachers use in the classroom that parents might not be familiar with. Hanneken’s no stranger to the field of education. She has a bachelor ’s degree in secondary education-biology from Milliken University, and she taught middle and high school in North Carolina for five years. After moving to Edwardsville, she taught sixth grade for two years and seventh grade this past year at Lincoln Middle School. Beginning in the fall, Building Bonds and Bridges Education Center will be offering parent/child classes for children from age 2 through eighth grade. The fall parent/child class lineup includes Tinkering

Amie Hanneken (right), a certified teacher, opened Building Bonds & Bridges Education Center in Edwardsville. The center features unique tutoring classes where parents attend classes with their child. The parent/child classes allow the parent to revisit curriculum they learned years ago which allows them to better help their students with their homework. Julie Podshadley (left) is Hanneken’s teaching assistant. Toddlers for ages 2 to 3, Wiggle Worms for ages 2 to 5, Curious Critters for ages 4 to 5, Elementary Essentials for grades one through four and Middle Math Mania for grades five through eight. Hanneken was especially excited about the new fall program “Wiggle Worms” that will take place on Fridays and is for children between 2 and 5 years old. “It’s going to be more for kids who are very active and not necessarily able to sit down yet, but you want to do some educational things,” Hanneken said. The parent/child 60 minute themed classes for preschool aged children are led by a teacher and cater to busy stay at home and working moms and dads by offering morning and evening classes. In these classes parents spend oneon-one time with their child and it creates a social environment for parents with children similar in age. Both parent and child will spend quality educational play time at organized centers that incorporate skills such as colors, sizes, shapes, sorting, sharing imaginative play, arts and crafts, fine and gross motor skills, hygiene and nonverbal and verbal language development. “This would be an opportunity where parents, for an hour, can take their child during the day, do some educational playing with them and

I would prepare everything and have the clean up,” she said. “I would take care of all of that and they would just come and enjoy that time with their child without having to pay daycare prices, make long term commitments or (pay for) preschool.” The Elementary Essentials and Middle School Math Mania fall parent-child 60 minute classes begin with a bonding activity to help the children and the parents learn to communicate with each other. “It will hopefully open up some of the communication and make it less stressful especially at the middle school level,” Hanneken said. “My son is only three-and-a-half but I hear homework can be nightmares some nights. Parents saying it one way and the children saying, “Well the teacher told me to do it this way.” If the parent is there learning side-byside then it kind of gets rid of that gap in communication about how it’s supposed to be done or what point of view they are seeing it from.” Following the opening activity, the teacher will provide instruction for the designated mathematical topic. Each lesson incorporates hands-on activities, modeling, immediate feedback and positive reinforcement. Parents and students will work side-by-side to complete tasks and solve problems, and then

the last 15 minutes will be allotted for individual homework questions. Parents will also receive information on that day’s lesson, how it relates to state standards and practice problems for home. The parent/child classes are offered once a week which Hanneken felt “will be less demanding as far as time commitments” and that her tutoring approach would be less costly for parents than the traditional three-day a week programs. Although Hanneken is looking forward to the parent/child classes in the fall, right now her focus is on the student-only summer math camps. Both elementary and middle school camps are offered and individual classes are determined by which grade a child is entering next fall. The elementary summer math camp’s theme is “Beach Boys & Girls” which was planned and developed by a certified math teacher. The lessons taught during the camp reinforce mathematical concepts taught during the previous school year through a variety of theme and age appropriate manipulatives such as paints, magnets, Play-Doh and sand. All lessons are based on the Illinois State Math Standards and class size is limited to 12 students per class for a period of two hours Monday through Friday. Middle school math camp is

geared for students entering fifth through eighth grade. The primary focus is mathematical concepts such as fractions, decimals, percentages a n d a l g e b r a i c e x p re s s i o n s . A certified middle school math teacher will reinforce the Illinois State Mathematical Standards for each specified grade year. Students will enjoy and gain a better understanding for math as all lessons incorporate a variety of manipulatives such as cards, dice, fraction bars and Legos. Summer math camp sessions are offered throughout the summer beginning in late June. Classes meet for two hours Monday through Friday and cost $150 per one-week session. The schedule for summer math camps, the fall parent/ child classes as well as other classes offered by Building Bonds and Bridges Education Center can be found online at www. BuildingBondsBridges.org or by calling the center at 570-3786. Anyone interested in learning more about Building Bonds and Bridges is invited to attend a Grand Opening event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 12 at the center which is located at No. 2 Sunset Hills Executive Park, Suite 4 in Edwardsville – next to the Comfort Inn on Route 157.

Business Is Booming!! But… Supply Shortage Drives Local Car Dealer To Pay-Off Consumer Auto Loans And Leases Early To Keep Inventory Full

EDWARDSVILLE – Good news for people who are tired of their ride: Koetting Ford needs used cars and is willing to do just about anything to get them…including helping you to eliminate the remaining payments on your current lease or loan. Dealers nationwide have experienced a spike in sales recently, but manufacturers have slowed production to a near standstill and President Obama’s Cash For Clunkers program removed 690,000 vehicles from the road. This all means there are not enough vehicles “for sale” right now to keep up the current sales pace. One local car dealer, Marty McCabe from Koetting Ford, invented a unique solution to the problem. “Our business can’t afford to wait for this problem to run its course. We need to keep selling cars this month. But with only a 56-day supply on-hand nationally, we need to do something pretty drastic. There are thousands of people in this town who want a nicer, newer car but are still making payments. Then there’s me, who needs used cars. So…how about I help you handle the remaining payments and you get a better car right now?”

A

t most dealerships, the credit score matters more than the person. But our relationships with many flexible lenders allows us to match your credit application with the lender most likely to approve you…a bank that will take the person into consideration, not just the credit score. Heck, just looking at the credit scores is what got us into this mess in the first place. It’s high time to put the person first, in my opinion. That’s how we operate here. Marty McCabe

This unusual proposal makes sense because rather than removing a car from the inventory at the time of purchase, you actually replenish the supply when you trade in. Marty McCabe says that each transaction has a unique “Inventory Footprint” with some transactions resulting in -1, some in 0, and some in +1. According to McCabe, “This month we’re looking for 0’s and +1’s, which means we’ll buy your current vehicle even if you don’t buy one from us and we will help you pay off your loan or lease early, just so we can keep our inventory from running dry.”

How Long Will This Last?

When asked about timing, McCabe explained, “This problem should only last about a month. I expect the supply to level out by July as the manufacturers pick up the pace and other dealers’ sales slow down. But we only have 12 months in a year, and I’m not willing to go dark for one of them.” Automotive experts indicate that this inventory correction could last anywhere between 10 and 45 days. The offer to help you eliminate the remaining payments on your loan or lease is good until June 30, 2010 or until the inventory supply returns…whichever comes first.

A Trader’s Market?

“It’s a lot like a perfect storm,” says McCabe. “Nobody could have predicted it, and it only comes around every 10 or 15 years. Suppliers have been slowing down consistently over the past few years. But nobody expected so many sales to be made so quickly in the first part of 2010. Until it’s resolved, this ‘perfect storm’ creates what’s known as a ‘Trader’s Market’ which places upward pressure on

Edwardsville residents are lining up at Koetting Ford to have their car loans or leases paid off early (sometimes YEARS early) and then driving home in a nicer, newer vehicle long before they thought they could. National auto supply shortages are forcing Koetting Ford to overpay for trades, resulting in early pay-offs. This rare ‘trader’s market’ will only last through the end of the month. Call or visit Koetting Ford at 3465 Progress Pkwy., Granite City 62040 (Rt 3 at Pontoon Rd. next to Granite City WalMart)!

the value of your trade. That extra value gives me the leverage I need to negotiate favorable buy out terms with your original bank.”

The Banks Want Out

To make the timing even better, it seems that some banks are anxious to eliminate loans made between two and five years ago. “There was a lending frenzy during that time that caused many banks to make deals they wish they wouldn’t have made (now known as toxic assets). Now they’re trying to clean their books up…and many are more than happy to be finished with loans that aren’t yet paid off. This works in your favor.” “It truly is a good opportunity for all involved: the bank gets their money, I get the inventory I need, and you get the nicer, newer car you want. There are no losers in this deal!” trumpeted McCabe.

Heck, just looking at the credit scores is what got us into this mess in the first place. It’s high time to put the person first, in my opinion. That’s how we operate here.”

What Next?

Marty McCabe expects a heavy response to this offer, so please call ahead and make an appointment to have your current loan or lease evaluated. Walk-ins will be accepted, though may require a short wait. If lines are busy, please keep calling. “Iron Man 2”

Lots of things get blown up and torn apart in “Iron Man 2,” as you would expect from any self-respecting blockbuster kicking off the summer movie season. The magnitude of destruction far exceeds that of its predecessor and includes repeated instances of characters walking away from a massive fireball without looking back. ’Cause looking back is for wimps. But that’s not all that gets obliterated here. The substance of the original “Iron Man,” the brain and the soul that set it apart from the typical seasonal fare and made it one of the best films of 2008, also have been blown to bits. Tony Stark had purpose back then, and despite the outlandish fantasy of his Marvel Comics-inspired story, as a person he had a believable arc. Here, he’s purely arrogant once more, with some glimmers of mortality and daddy issues. And Robert Downey Jr., so irresistibly verbal and quick on his feet in the first film (and in pretty much every film he’s ever made), seems to be on autopilot. Sure, he’s got a way with a one-liner, and his comic timing is indisputable, but he’s done this songand-dance routine before and seems rather bored with it. Then again the character — and the sequel itself — are less defined this time. Narratively, “Iron Man 2” is a mess. Director Jon Favreau, working from a script by Justin Theroux, throws in too many subplots, too many characters. Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle and Samuel L. Jackson are among the crowded supporting cast. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of intense sci-fi action and violence, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 124 min. 2-D only. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Shrek Forever After”

Given that this is the first film in the “Shrek” franchise in 3-D, it’s surprisingly flat — and we’re not just talking about the look of it. This fourth and allegedly final installment in the series is lifeless, joyless and woefully devoid of the upbeat energy that distinguished the earlier movies — well, at least the first two. If “Shrek the Third” from 2007 felt tired, “Shrek Forever After” is practically narcoleptic. Brief bursts of manic energy give way to long, heavy stretches that drag. Most of the hackneyed pop culture references of its predecessors are gone, mercifully, but so is the fun. This time, the big, bad ogre (voiced as always by Mike Myers) is having a mid-life crisis — not exactly a hoot for the kids in the audience, and their parents can suffer through that at home for free. As for the

June 17, 2010

animation, presenting it in 3-D doesn’t add a whole lot. This is not a deeply immersive experience; more often, it consists of stuff being flung at you in gimmicky fashion. And the frustrating part is, the “Shrek” movies didn’t need an added dimension: They already had an impressive visual scheme all their own. Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas return to the voice cast. RATED: PG for mild action, some rude humor and brief language. In 3-D and IMAX 3-D. RUNNING TIME: 93 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Micmacs”

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, whose films include “Amelie” and “Delicatessen,” combines the spirit and visual flair of those fantasies for a frivolous, featherweight yet fun concoction about lovable misfits messing with big, bad weapons manufacturers. Like a grown-up gang of Little Rascals, with shades of Charles Chaplin’s Little Tramp and Buster Keaton’s wild antics, Jeunet’s ensemble romps through clever stunts and gimmickry to carry out their low-rent “Mission: Impossible” stratagems. Comedian and filmmaker Dany Boon stars as a gentle soul aiming to inflict some personal justice on the arms companies that made the munitions that left him with a bullet lodged in his brain and that killed his father. He finds allies in a band of scroungers and gatherers living in an elaborate subterranean dwelling made of scrap in a Paris junkyard. With a big heart and a playful visual style, the film is a nice palate cleanser among all the computer-generated action of Hollywood’s summer blockbusters. RATED: R for some sexuality and brief violence. RUNNING TIME: 104 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”

As we await the eventual arrival of “Donkey Kong: The Musical!” yet another movie based on a video game, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” arrives in theaters. As this genre goes, “Prince of Persia” doesn’t have the shoddy appearance of, say, “Alone in the Dark” or “House of the Dead” or any number of films from the infamous German director Uwe Boll. No, this is a Jerry Bruckheimer production, so it looks cheesy in the kind of monster-budget way you can only achieve through

copious amounts of computer-generated imagery. There’s nothing terribly memorable about “Prince of Persia”; recalling the plot a half-hour afterward might require some effort. Somewhere beneath all the fake, glossy effects — which in no way suggest anything even remotely resembling a tangible reality — there must be a story and characters and, you know, acting. Jake Gyllenhaal, as our courageous and resourceful hero Dastan, always has an engaging presence about him — those big, blue eyes, that goofy smile — and that sweetness helps keep the mood light when “Prince of Persia” threatens to take itself too seriously. Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina co-star. RATED: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Sex and the City 2”

So over-the-top ridiculous, it plays like a parody of what a sequel to the 2008 hit movie would be. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) travel to Abu Dhabi, wear outrageous costumes and ride camels across the desert. So much goes wrong here: It’s self-indulgent, way too long and never as clever or funny as it’s intended to be. Writerdirector Michael Patrick King and Co. found a balance of substance and style with the long-running, hugely popular HBO series. Even the original “Sex and the City” movie, for all its fashionable splashiness, still managed to be about something: the way the characters adapted as they morphed from single party girls into women building families for themselves. But the sequel too often feels like a series of lavish set pieces with sporadic discussions about careers, marriage and babies in between (although one of those talks, between Charlotte and Miranda about the realities of motherhood, is the purest moment in the movie). The wretched excess clangs, and much of the shtick has long since gotten old. Carrie’s running voiceover, the structural thread all along, feels intrusive and pat. Charlotte’s cutesy prudishness seems an ill fit on a married mother of two. And Samantha’s corny puns reach a new low, as evidenced by her reference to a hot, globe-trotting architect she meets in the desert as “Lawrence of my labia.” It’s seriously cringe-inducing. RATED: R for some strong sexual content and language. RUNNING TIME: 146 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies “Greek” a breath of fresh air By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Finally this summer, a movie that lives up to its hype. “Get Him to the Greek” is a complete blast, a much-needed breath of fresh air — well, as much fresh air as you can get in crowded clubs, packed rock shows and trashed hotel suites. But you get the idea. Its energy is what’s so refreshing, its lack of pretension or self-seriousness, especially during a season of bloated, boring blockbusters. Like the 2008 hit “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” which inspired it, and like the other stand-out Judd Apatow productions such as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and “Superbad,” “Get Him to the Greek” is primarily here to offer up a good time, with rapid-fire jokes, great pacing and (of course) a litany of clever pop-culture references. But there’s always that layer of humanity and sweetness that sneaks in, providing some heart along with the raunchiness. Russell Brand’s performance was one of the funniest, most memorable parts of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and here he reprises the role of preening British rock star Aldous Snow. Brand stole that movie in just a few scenes, and a little of this character would seem to go a long way. Aldous is self-centered, arrogant and condescending. People are disposable to him, and he’s incapable of being loyal. He’s also flat-out brilliant and highly verbal, with a quick wit and an arsenal of hilariously off-kilter quips and observations. So he’s sort of a fascinating mix of contradictions, and a guy you wouldn’t mind hanging out with and partying all night — just to see what happens.

Associated Press

“Get Him to the Greek” co-stars Rose Byrne, left, and Russell Brand prepare for their appearance on the NBC “Today” television program in z York on June 3. But “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” director Nicholas Stoller, who directed and wrote the script this time based on Jason Segel’s characters, also shows Aldous’ vulnerability, his caring side and even a darkness in expanding the role. “Get Him to the Greek” might actually go to some places that are too uncomfortably dark, its only weakness. But Brand seems comfortable and confident throughout, and the stand-up comic

shows he’s capable of more than just earning laughs. When we first see him in “Get Him to the Greek,” Aldous has released his latest album, “African Child,” to universal critical derision. (The video for the title song opens the film, and it’s a scream.) At the same time, he’s also just been dumped by his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his son, model/pop star Jackie Q (Rose Byrne in a beautifully

deadpan turn as a clueless, vapid musician). So after years of sobriety, he’s now numbing the pain with booze, drugs and as many women as he can find: basically living the cliched rock-star life. B u t u p - a n d - c o m i n g re c o rd executive Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) has an idea: stage a 10-yearanniversary concert of Aldous’ legendary show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. It’ll provide

a jolt not just to Aldous’ career but his own, and hopefully impress his mercurial, demanding boss, Sergio Roma (Sean Combs, a scene-stealer himself). Hill is the straight man again, as he was opposite Brand in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” but he’s not playing the same character. Both guys share a fawning admiration for Aldous’ work. In “Get Him to the Greek,” at least, this dynamic will change.

Two films can’t manage two stars By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I felt infantilized by the two films I saw this week. Sure, I expected as much from Marmaduke, a live action/CGI blend involving the characters of the longrunning single pane comic strip. But I felt more of a commiseration in it toward Killers, a movie that tries to be all genres. Together, with Splice and Get Him to the Greek, the four new releases left a lasting, underwhelming impression on a pathetic box office. In syndication, “Marmaduke” has run for almost sixty years in Sunday newspapers around the world. The stories feature the exploits of an over-sized Great Dane, who, in this movie, is voiced by a cool Owen Wilson, an actor I admire for really stepping out of his comfort zone to try new things--and admittedly taking a step back on occasion. Due to his size, friendly

June 17, 2010

disposition, easy-going demeanor, and shocking sense of curiosity, Marmaduke constantly finds himself in sticky situations and responsible for his fair share of blame in creating havoc in the life of his family, the Winslows (Mom and Dad are played by Judy Greer and Lee Pace). The movie features a bevy of heavyweight voice talents like Kiefer Sutherland, Sam Elliott, and George Lopez as a sassy, loyal pussycat. Marmaduke aims to be so much more to its audiences than, say, Garfield, another comic strip adaptation using smug humor and an oversized CGI pet. It’s better, but only by a tiny fraction. There are more humorous dog joke per square inch in this film than should be allowed by law. The best parts all involve Wilson’s smug asides directly to the audience. Marmaduke runs 97 minutes and is rated PG for some rude humor and language. I give this film one star out of four.

Killers, on the same hand, is a misfire, smashing together a dozen films we’ve seen time and again. It’s similar to a comedy version of the fun 2005 Brangelina movie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith (which is to say that it’s also like an action version of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1941 movie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Seriously, how do I know this stuff?). Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, as Spencer and Jen, play a pretty married couple whose idyllic home life is shattered by the return of dangerous characters from his past. Spencer might have forgotten to tell his wife about the time he worked for the CIA before they got married. It was on his final mission, in fact, that the two met in Nice, the South France destination for anyone interested in the perfect vacation. The arrival of mercenary sleeper agents turn their facile life into a run for survival. After hitting homeruns in Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, I felt Katherine Heigl owed

me something after that debacle called The Ugly Truth last year. Re-teaming with director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde) seemed like an odd way to go about it, but I’m going to call the Killers experience a draw in my standing feud with her choice in roles. She had a glow, maybe due to a pregnancy subplot, but even that couldn’t save this movie from being a total bomb. For a picture featuring such gruesome occurrences as impalement, crushing, and more bullets than bad words, Killers doesn’t show much blood or guts. In fact, the most revealing scenes in the movie feature Jen’s ultra-controlling parents, Catherine O’Hara (playing an outright lush) and Tom Selleck (that mustache still rocks). There’s really no reason to see this movie if you don’t have to. Killers runs 109 minutes and is rated PG13 for violent action, sexual material and language. I give this film 1/2 of one star out of four.

"Toy Story 3" shines less brightly By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press This is what happens when you’re good at your job: Everyone expects excellence f ro m y o u , a n d a n y t h i n g e v e n slightly short of that feels like a letdown. “Toy Story 3” is a gorgeous film — funny, sweet and clever in the tradition of the best Pixar movies — but because it comes from that studio’s nearly flawless tradition, including two “Toy Story” predecessors, the expectations naturally are inflated. Excluding “Cars,” Pixar has a perfect track record of animated classics, with the innovative “ To y S t o r y ” s t a r t i n g i t a l l i n 1995. And so the pressure’s on to come up with a tale that makes a sequel worthwhile. The storytelling in no way is in question; it never is at Pixar, which is the fundamental reason their films are so strong. Neither is the voice cast, led once again by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, with formidable newcomers like Ned Beatty thrown into the mix.

The details are as vibrant and tactile as ever: the textures and e x p re s s i o n s , t h e u s e o f l i g h t , angles and perspective. And the core concept — that toys have a rich, complex interior life when people aren’t a ro u n d — s t i l l h o l d s u p a n d resonates all these years later. I f “ To y S t o r y ” h a d n ’ t c o m e out in 1995 and “Toy Story 2” hadn’t followed it in 1999, “Toy Story 3” would stand on its own as a breakthrough. Trouble is, those earlier movies do exist. And by comparison, this third installment doesn’t feel quite so fresh. And then, of course, there i s t h e 3 - D — the trend of the summer, the thing that makes this “Toy Story” different from the first two. It’s not intrusive. It doesn’t consist of stuff being flung at you and plopped in your laps in gimmicky fashion. But as is so often the case, it’s also completely unnecessary. That’s especially true with the kind of strong writing you have here. The script comes from Michael Arndt, an Oscar-winner for

He’s heading off to college, and as he’s cleaning out his room, he must decide what to do with his old friends. Mom (Laurie Metcalf) gives him two options: stick them in a box for s t o r a g e i n t h e a t t i c o r t h ro w them in a trash bag for the garbage men. The toys, including the neurotic dinosaur Rex (Wallace Shawn), know-it-all piggy bank Hamm (John Ratzenberger) a n d w i s e c r a c k i n g M r. a n d Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), are understandably freaked out by b o t h p ro s p e c t s . P l u s , t h e y ’ re just sad to see their friend go

and have all the good times end. It raises the kind of deep, existential question you don’t often see in a kids movie: If no one acknowledges you, do you still exist? Through a couple of mixups (and some “Mission: Impossible”-style maneuvering), they wind up instead at a day care, which seems awesome: Kids play with you all day! And new kids are constantly coming through, so the toys will never be bored or lonely! It’s paradise — until they’re placed in the room with all the wildly grabby toddlers, rather than the older kids who play a little more gently. A n d t h e w h o l e p l a c e i s ru n with a firm, fuzzy paw by Lotso’-Huggin’ Bear (the excellent Beatty), who’s all Southern charm at first but is actually a Machiavellian tyrant. He’s like a pink, strawberry-scented Tennessee Williams character. Among the other new cast members, Timothy Dalton is a total scene-stealer as a hedgehog i n l e i d e r h o s e n n a m e d M r. a c t o r, a n d M i c h a e l K e a t o n i s perfect as pretty-boy Ken, who’s just as obsessed with clothes as Barbie (Jodi Benson) is. It’s some of the best work Keaton’s done in years, and a great reminder of how funny he can be. Unkrich, who was a film editor on “Toy Story” and codirector on “Toy Story 2,” plays the petite prison elements of the situation for tons of clever laughs. There’s also a beautiful, sepiatoned flashback that explains the origin of Lotso’s anger, as well as the back story of his c h i e f e n f o r c e r, a c r e e p y d o l l named Big Baby. But then “Toy Story 3” turns unusually dark as it heads toward its climax — it might be too intense for littler kids — before turning heavyhandedly sappy at the absolute end. Adults in the audience will undoubtedly shed a tear or two. But that’s how good the folks at Pixar are: They make you feel genuine emotions for hunks of plastic.

How to. . . There is a difference In your search for a women’s specialty doctor, it’s important to first realize that not all gynecologists are obstetricians.

Choose an obstetrician

Finding an obstetrician is becoming an increasingly difficult thing. But there are still plenty of worthy candidates out there, and choosing the right person for you just takes a little bit of legwork.

Another point of advice is to choose a doctor who is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ABOG). Visit www.abog. org for more information.

In your search for a women’s specialty doctor, it’s important to first realize that not all gynecologists are obstetricians.

For those women who prefer alternate care, a qualified nurse-midwife who also provides prenatal care might be the way to go.

While the Ob/Gyn title seems to follow many doctors’ names, some, because of the aforementioned rising costs in liability insurance, are strictly sticking to gynecology these days.

Information provide by Dr. Midkiff

So if you were looking for “one-stop shopping” so to say, you may need to do a little more research into doctor choices. 1. Referrals: When selecting a doctor, a good place to begin is with referrals from friends and family, provided these people live close by. Talk to new mothers and find out what they have to say about their doctor or group practice. Remember, though, that everyone has different preferences in doctors, so this is merely a jumping-off point to finding the right obstetrician fit for you. 2. Proximity: Take your list of referrals and see where the doctors are located. Most women desire a doctor who is relatively close to home. Having a doctor in close proximity can be an advantage when the latter part of the pregnancy requires weekly trips to the doctor.

If you were looking for "one-stop shopping" so to say, you may need to do a little more research into doctor choices.

With an obstetrician close by, it’s easier to schedule appointments that may fit into your day, with a quick return trip home or to work. 3. Insurance carrier: You may find a doctor that was highly referred and is close to home, but doesn’t take your insurance plan. That is why it is essential to visit the Web site of your insurance carrier during the research process and see what doctors are affiliated. Just because a doctor’s name appears on insurance lists is not proof enough that he or she accepts your plan. Some insurance company Web sites are infrequently updated. Other times a doctor who once practiced alone may have accepted your insurance, but now that he or she is part of a group practice, the insurance is no longer accepted. Call the office and verify that they accept your insurance before getting your heart set on a doctor. Just because your insurance carrier Web site lists them as accepting your plan, it is a good idea to call and inquire. 4. Gender: Think about whether you feel more comfortable with a male or female doctor. This will also weight into your choice. 5. Hospital affiliation: Most obstetricians are affiliated with one or more hospitals in the area. That means they have privileges to those hospitals, and that is where you’ll be sent to have your baby or for any routine medical tests not handled at the Ob’s office. Make sure you are comfortable with the hospital affiliation. Don’t be afraid to visit the hospital and see what the maternity ward looks like, and watch the interaction of staff and doctors. 6. The staff and office: The obstetrician won’t be the only person with whom you interact when visiting the office. You also have to feel comfortable with the nurses and administrative staff. Again, a visit to the office can give you a good idea whether the staff is friendly, professional, and values your privacy. While there, you can also see if there is a long wait time for visits, something to consider especially if you’ll be there frequently during peak times, such as after work.

How to. . . Why wait? Start communicating with your parents before they need assistance. Many of us are faced with the task of assisting our parents as they grow older. Good communication, organization and proper planning are the keys to prevent crisis. The following are a few suggestions to make it easier.

Care for your aging parents

Communication Start communicating with your parents before they need assistance. It is often a difficult conversation to start. Open with questions about their desires as they age or bring up someone else’s experience and ask what they would want you to do in that case. Do not make promises that you can’t keep, such as “I will never put you in a nursing home.” None of us can predict the future and the level of care that may be needed. Instead make promises of “I will always be there for you” or “I will make sure that you are taken care of.” This will prevent feelings of guilt when situations arise which warrant advanced care. Start a journal of information that you will need to provide care. Below is a list of things to start gathering: 1. Full legal name and residence 2. Birth date and place 3. Social Security number 4. Employer and dates of employment 5. Military records 6. Sources of income and assets; investment income (stocks, bonds, property) Stock brokers’ name and phone number. 7. Insurance policies, bank accounts, deeds, investments, and other valuables 8. Most recent income tax return 9. Money owed, to whom and payment schedule 10. Name of bank and bank accounts 11. Location of safe deposit box and key 12. Location of most recent will 13. List of medications Legal Documents Find an attorney that specializes in Elder Law. This is the legal practice of counseling and representing older persons and their representatives about the legal aspects of health and long - term care planning, public benefits, surrogate decision making, conservation, disposition and administration of older persons’ estates. To find an attorney that practices Elder Law, visit the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys Web site at www.naela.com. Below is a list of some of the legal documents to consider. • Durable Power of Attorney for Finances-gives a designated person the authority to make legal/financial decisions on behalf of the person. • A Will-indicates how a person’s assets and estate will be distributed among beneficiaries after his or her death. • Living Trust-describes how the person wants to allocate funds and settlements.

Medical Care There are several documents that are designed to assist with making health care decisions should your parent become incapacitated. These are referred to as Advance Directives for Health Care. Below are the documents and a brief explanation of their purpose. • Living Will-allows a person to specify what medical treatment they do or do not want at the end of their life. • Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care-appoints a designated person to make health care decisions when they are no longer able. This document also allows the designated person access to private medical information. Managing Care When a parent needs assistance it is important that all members of the family play a role. This can be a challenge when family members live at a distance and hold different opinions of how things should be handled. Below are a few questions: • Hold a family meeting and discuss who is good at what and what each member can contribute. One person may be good at handling the finances, another at providing hands on care. Each member can play a role even if they are at a distance. • Hire a Geriatric Care Manager. This is a licensed professional that specializes in geriatrics. Their services can include conducting care planning assessments to identify problems and offer solutions, screen, arrange and monitor in-home services, act as a liaison to families at a distance, assist with moving an older person to assisted care or nursing home, and provide consumer education and advocacy. To locate a Geriatric Care Manager, visit the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers at their Web site www.caremanager. org. • Investigate all of the resources available in your community. There are often many groups and businesses that support caregivers or specialize in catering to seniors needs. The local senior center can be a good place to start. • Educate yourself on the medical conditions that your parents have. This will help you recognize potential problems early.

Jackson Browne California sound coming to The Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Whether you are “Running on Empty” or a “Pretender,” you want to make sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, Aug. 10, for Jackson Browne, with special guest, David Lindley. The duo will be coming to The Fabulous Fox Theatre for a one night only special concert. Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973’s “For Everyman,” and on classics including “Late For The Sky” and “The Pretender” (the latter two both on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest lbums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983’s acclaimed “El Rayo-X.” Prior to 2010’s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain – in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming two-CD album “Love Is Strange,” “En Vivo Con Tino”- featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Released worldwide on May 11, 2010, Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, “Love Is Strange” was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter. The breakthrough continues with the not-to-be-missed 2010 Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour. In 2004, Browne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Springsteen gave the induction speech, commenting to Browne that although the Eagles were inducted first, he said, “You wrote the songs they wished they had written.” Browne had written an uncounted number of hit songs that many artists, including the Eagles, and Springsteen himself had recorded over the span of his career. For “promoting peace and justice through his music and his unrelenting support for that which promotes nonviolent solutions to problems both nationally and internationally,” Browne received the Courage of Conscience Awards from The Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Jackson Browne and David Lindley will play at The Fabulous Fox Theatre on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $58.50, $53.50, $48.50 and $43.50. A limited number of Gold Circle seats are also available. Limit of four tickets per transaction Purchase tickets at the Fox Box Office, MetroTix outlets or by calling 314-534-1111. Homegrown Summer Contemporary Art Museum welcomes the season By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Some great things are happening in St. Louis this summer and the arts are certainly being celebrated in high fashion. The Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) St. Louis located at 3750 Washington Blvd., St. Louis is a non-collecting institution, the Contemporary focuses its efforts on featuring local, national and international, well-known and newly established artists from diverse backgrounds, working in all types of media. As St. Louis’ forum for interpreting culture through contemporary visual art, the Contemporary connects visitors to the dynamic art and ideas of our times. As a gathering place for experiencing contemporary art and culture, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis pushes the boundaries of innovation, creativity and expression. CAM is again creating the perfect venue for local artists to share their work. Beginning with the opening of the Great Rivers Biennial 2010 exhibition in its Main Galleries on April 30,

2010, the Contemporary Art Museum is looking no further than its own backyard for inspiration this summer. Just as Great Rivers celebrates the richness and diversity that make the St. Louis art scene so vibrant, the museum’s Homegrown Summer series of events pays tribute to the breadth and depth of St. Louis culture and life – its food, music, ideas, and citizens. “We want to engage people, to get them talking with us, and with neighbors and friends. We use art to get the conversation going, and food, and music, too,” said Director Paul Ha. “This summer, we’re focused on the local; what we grow here, what we eat and listen to. The museum is going to be a really great place to hang out in this summer. We’ve got a lot going on.” Homegrown Summer exhibitions In addition to the Great Rivers Biennial 2010 exhibition, which runs through Aug. 8, the Contemporary will present a series of five smaller exhibitions in its intimate Front Room gallery, each of which will be curated by a St. Louisan. The Arts Artistic adventures Dance St. Louis plans 45th season Dance St. Louis will open its 45th season of bringing great dance of the world to St. Louis in October with one of America’s premier ballet companies, Houston Ballet, and will close the following August with the 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical. “Through the year we will journey to emotions only dance can bring, with each performance from a company admired all over the world,” said Michael Uthoff, Dance St. Louis artistic & executive director. Dance St. Louis’ 2010-11 season opens October 8 and 9 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center when, as part of the first-ever American Arts Experience–St. Louis, Houston Ballet brings an intimate program of sweet and playful classical dances by George Balanchine, Houston Artistic Director Stanton Welch, and Houston Associate Choreographer Christopher Bruce. The holiday season kicks off at the Fox Theatre on December 2-5 with The Joffrey Ballet in Nutcracker at the Fox, combining dancing of “exceptional fire and exuberance” (Chicago Sun-Times), Tchaikovsky’s evergreen score played live by the Ballet Orchestra of St. Louis, luscious Victorian sets and costumes, and performances by young St. Louisarea singers and dancers. Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet comes to St. Louis for the first time at the Touhill on January 28 and 29. In just seven years, this New York-based troupe of 16 international dancers has vaulted into the front ranks with its cutting-edge repertory from Europe’s most daring choreographers. On March 11 and 12, the monumental Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox on March 11 and 12 for a mixed program blending modern dance and African American spirit, climaxed by the celebration of 50 years of its signature masterwork, Revelations. On March 25-27, the Fox explodes with the ever-popular international percussion sensation STOMP, co-presented by the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. Unique St. Louis art on display at the Arch Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host a special exhibit from St. Louis artist Sheila Harris at the Old Courthouse now through Aug. 22. Created especially for the memorial, the exhibit consists of nearly 40 watercolor paintings of buildings that once stood on the Arch grounds. Harris’ “portraits” of buildings depict structures from several generations of the city’s architectural history illustrating how the landscape on the riverfront evolved over time. The paintings are grouped based on four historic and stylistic eras on the riverfront. In addition, each portrait will include maps showing the buildings’ original locations, architectural fragments from the buildings, interpretive text and an artist’s statement. Harris, a St. Louis native, taught art at Rosary High School for 36 years. The exhibit is curated by her sister, NiNi Harris, a local historian and the author of nine books on St. Louis history, architecture, city neighborhoods and the Gateway Arch. While the exhibit is on display at the Courthouse, Harris will d i s c u s s a n d demonstrate her technique during several scheduled appearances. A schedule of the appearances can be found online at www.nps.gov/jeff. NiNi Harris will also present a historical play based on the exhibit during its run. NiNi offers that the exhibit will “expand in a different media the riverfront story and bring to life the fact that there was once a wonderful collection of buildings there ranging from simple to ornate and from modest to grandiose. We have been so very fortunate in St. Louis, for we tore down a great collection of buildings, but got a great sculpture (the Gateway Arch) and landscape in their place. This is very rare in history and is one of the points I hope the exhibit will demonstrate.”

SIUE alum to display work on campus Millions of people have seen the work of Gib Singleton, a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate who may be best known for creating the crucifix atop the crosier of the late John Paul II during his time as Pope and now carried by Pope Benedict XVI. Singleton’s sculpture inspires in seemingly diverse locations, ranging from the Vatican Museum to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and from the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Remembrance Authority to private collections around the world. For the first time, 28 of the artist’s

works—representing religious, western, and contemporary subjects—will be on display at his alma mater in the exhibit, From the Earth, from Thursday, May 13th, through Sunday, June 27th in SIUE’s Morris University Center Gallery. A native Missourian, Singleton was raised in Granite City and attended SIU Carbondale before enrolling at SIUE. He attended classes at what was then known as the Alton Residence Center and then at Edwardsville when the main campus opened in 1965. He graduated two years later and went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Singleon’s efforts earned him a Fulbright Scholarship to study

at the Accademia di Bella Arti in Florence, Italy. While there, he was made part of the team responsible for the restoration of Michelangelo’s Pieta, after it was damaged by a vandal in 1972. Now 74, Singleton lives and works in Santa Fe, NM, where much of his art is on display at Galerie Zűger, and he just completed life-size representations of the 14 Stations of the Cross, which will be loaned to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe for the next 25 years. For more information on the exhibit or the artist, visit the website: www.siue.edu/alumni, or contact Steve Jankowski, director of Alumni Affairs, (618) 650-2346.

Circus Flora A summer tradition returns to St. Louis By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge It’s here! The 24th season of Circus Flora has arrived and is an all new explosion of color, magic and excitement for all ages. “Ingenioso,” inspired by the impossible dream of Don Quixote is being presented in such a fantastical way that only the beloved one-ring, European-style circus can do. The sizzling Spanish flair and variety of classic circus acts including galloping conquistadors, hilarious farmyard animals, classic equestrian ballet, breathtaking aerial acts and an awe-inspiring low-wire walker, Circus Flora’s ensemble brings this tale of misadventure to life. Circus Flora was originally commissioned by Gian Carlo Menotti, for the 1986 Spoleto Festival USA. Based on the overwhelmingly positive response at its debut, Artistic Director/ Producer, Ivor David Balding, together with Sheila and Sam Jewell and Alexandre Sacha Pavlata, established Circus Flora in 1987, as a permanent performing arts organization in St. Louis.

Established as a theater company, Circus Flora specialized in an ensemble, one-ring circusperformed in a big top tentaccessible and affordable for all. Flora, for which the circus is named, is an orphaned elephant that Balding rescued when her mother was killed by ivory poachers in Africa. For 15 years, Flora was a beloved star of the circus. In 2000, Flora retired from stage life and currently resides in the elephant sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn. In the 2010 “Ingenioso” production, the circus ring becomes the fields of LaMancha, as the story follows the noble, often haphazard quest of Don Quixote, the Knight of the Mournful Countenance, and his squire, Sancho Panza, to right the wrongs of the world – or at least the wrongs of the world within riding distance. Here, windmills transform before viewers eyes into giants, peasant girls into princesses; a barnyard scene becomes a 12-pony liberty act, and the swineherd, an elegant lady. With returning favorites and surprising new acts, the brand new 2010 production reunites worldrenowned Circus Flora stars, Cecil

MacKinnon as Yo-Yo the Narrator, Carlos Svenson as Don Quixote, Giovanni Zoppe as Nino the Clown, the Flying Pages, the St. Louis Arches and the Circus Flora Band. Show times are Tuesday through Thursday, at 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; and “Little Top Wednesday” at 10 a.m – a special one-hour show for smaller kids or the “kids at heart.” The performances are currently under way and will run through Sunday, June 27. Tickets for “Ingenioso are $8 to $39 and available through all MetroTix outlets, including www. MetroTix.com and by phone at 314534-1111. Tickets are also available at the Emerson Box Office in the Centene Center for the Arts and Education and by calling Circus Flora, at 314-289-4040. Group discounts are available for groups of 20 or more. The ‘big top tent” is set up in Grand Center, on Samuel Shepard Drive, adjacent to Powell Hall. Family Focus Splurging during fragile times NEW YORK (AP) –Meet Jim Breitinger, Alison Hinson and Joanne Cleaver. Their lives are different but they’ve got one thing in common as they navigate the fragile economy: an oh-so-good splurge. Breitinger is a single guy who returned to the ski slopes near home in Salt Lake City, Utah, last season, but he made far fewer trips than he wanted as he dug his way out from under thousands in credit card debt. Hinson and her husband have a 4-year-old daughter and a modest home just outside Portland, Maine. They have kayaks but no boat big enough to put on the ocean a halfmile away. What they do have is a shiny new counter depth refrigerator as they spiffed up their kitchen. Cleaver, who loves to quilt and sew herself knit wrap dresses, recently hit her favorite fabrics store, ignoring for an instant her husband’s plea to use up her abundant stash stacked on shelves in their Chicago home. All three have jobs and have gone through recent job transitions. Breitinger ’s back in the corporate world after a huge mid-career pay

drop to retrain and teach, then go into business for himself. Though Cleaver and Hinson have husbands who make nice livings, Hinson was laid off as the business manager of an outdoor school and works as a freelance financial coach. Cleaver added a startup doing research to her writer’s resume. They’re not in the direst of circumstances, considering, but they play into a small trend noted recently by bellwether Walmart: Some wealthier shoppers are starting to spend up. Consider them three people behind the world’s daily dance of economy urgency, splurging beyond a little more latte at Starbucks to feel better a lot: JIM BREITINGER At 44, the editorial director spent two years living like a pauper with his dog in an Airstream trailer as he paid off more than $50,000 in credit card debt. Breitinger’s troubles began after he left the corporate world to go to grad school so he could devote himself to teaching history, writing and starting a business selling pieces of meteorite at rock and gem shows.

“It was a mid-career thing,” he said after watching his income plummet from $100,000 to $30,000. “I found it somewhat impossible to deal with my lower income.” O n t h e v e rg e o f d e c l a r i n g b a n k r u p t c y, h e n e g o t i a t e d settlements with numerous credit card companies — and things are looking up. Recent splurges? — Skiing about six times last season on rented equipment, using free lift tickets he got through work. In better times, he would have been out on the slopes 20 days or more. — Jake, his half Great Pyrenees and half German shepherd, gets a break from staying home alone about once a week at doggy day care. “He loves it and it makes me feel good to know he’s not just sitting at home doing nothing.” — Breitinger just bought a new Honda Fit for $17,500, selling his gas-guzzling, 4-year-old Dodge Ram for what he owed on it. “Getting a new car felt like a luxury, even though the whole point was to get a vehicle that would be cheaper to own.”

It’s the first time we didn’t have to buy something because it broke down.” — A two-week family vacation in Alaska this summer after Hinson took a cruise to Mexico in January with some girlfriends. “We’ve always watched our pennies but all of a sudden there’s been kind of a loosening up.” — A new lawnmower and new gutters. “For us, compared to what we had been doing, it’s all huge bucks.” JOANNE CLEAVER Cleaver, 51, considers herself a “fabric nut.” She’s been sewing since she was 12 and started quilting at 14. Sewing is a passion, but putting her three kids through college is a necessity for her and her husband — and where a major chunk of money has been going. They have two down and one to go, estimating the cost for all three, including housing and other related expenses, at half a million over 13 years.

ALISON HINSON Hinson, also 44, said she’s always been good with money. She and her husband, who works in information technology for the state of Maine, live with their 4-yearold daughter in a three-bedroom, one-bathroom house of about 1,000 square feet, complete with a large garage. They decided to stay put after the baby was born to pay off their 16-year mortgage early, putting off renovations, new cars and other luxuries. Hinson left her full-time job a year ago to hire out as a personal finance consultant and public speaker, exchanging a drastic drop in income for more job flexibility. The work, she said, is “pretty steady, nowhere near where it needs to be, but that’s true of the first year of any business.” Recent splurges? — Work on their house, including a new kitchen floor and new ceiling, floors and lighting to finish their basement for more play space. Travel Travel briefs Illinois cross draws tourists, ire from atheist ST. LOUIS (AP) — Farmers sold pigs to help raise money to build the towering cross on southern Illinois’ highest point as a yearround testament to faith. The 11story monument draws thousands of visitors each year, and supporters say it has promoted self-growth and reflection for nearly half a century. But over the years, the onceglistening structure about 130 miles southeast of St. Louis began to show its age. The 650 or so white porcelain panels that cover the concrete and steel frame rusted or fell off. Some remained attached with only coat hangers and bailing wire. A group cobbled together $360,000 of the $550,000 needed to restore the Bald Knob Cross of Peace, including a $20,000 grant from the state of Illinois. Now, a Chicago-area atheist who objects to the grant as a bit of unconstitutional pork has threatened to sue if the group doesn’t return the money to the state. Pitching the project as the renovation of a major tourist attraction “is a nice cover story,” Rob Sherman said in a telephone interview Wednesday. But the retired Chicago-area radio talk show host who successfully fought Illinois’ “moment of silence” in public schools said he thinks it would be more appropriate to use the money for such public interests as schools and roads. If it isn’t returned, he promised “a long and expensive” lawsuit. That didn’t deter the Friends of Bald Knob Cross. The money was used long ago as a down payment on the renovation of the monument near Alto Pass, Ill., said Bill Vandergraph, a minister and Friends board member. “We’re not shaken in any way,” Vandergraph said Thursday. “We’re trying to stay low-profile, and that’s not out of fear. We’re absolutely not intimidated.”

DOT: Airlines should pay bumped passengers more WASHINGTON (AP) — Airline passengers would receive as much as $1,300 for being bumped from a flight and would have 24 hours to cancel reservations without penalty, among other consumer protections proposed Wednesday by the Obama administration. Currently, airlines must pay up to $800 for involuntary bumping of passengers. The new rules, which will likely go into effect later this year, would also require airlines to fully and prominently disclose baggage fees as well as refunds and expense reimbursement when bags are not

June 17, 2010

delivered on time, provide special notice any time baggage fees are increased, and notify passengers buying tickets whether they must pay to check up to two bags. Price increases after a ticket is purchased would also be prohibited under the proposal. Airlines would also have to give passengers timely notice of flight status changes. The proposal would extend to foreign airlines a three-hour limit on the time airlines can keep passengers waiting on airport tarmacs. The threehour limit went into effect for U.S. carriers in April. Currently, airlines may limit compensation to $400 for involuntary bumping of passengers if the carrier arranges substitute transportation scheduled to arrive at the passenger’s destination one to two hours after the passenger’s original scheduled arrival for domestic flights, or one to four hours for international flights. They limit compensation to $800 if the substitute transportation is scheduled to arrive more than two hours later for domestic flights, or more than four hours later for international flights. The proposed rule would increase the limits to $650 and $1,300, respectively, and adjust those limits every two years inflation every two years. “This administration believes consumers are entitled to strong and effective protections when they fly,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. While acknowledging the financially troubled condition of the airline industry, LaHood said he believes airlines can factor the new rules into their schedules with causing disruptions in service. James May, president of the Air Transport Association, which represents major carriers, said airlines would evaluate the proposals “with a focus on minimizing potential passenger inconvenience.” Bumpings due to overbooking are becoming a more frequent occurrence. They rose in three of the past four years and jumped 10 percent to 762,422 in 2009, the highest total since 2002. They soared 17 percent in this year’s first quarter. Airlines are required to first ask for volunteers before involuntarily bumping ticket holders. They can reward volunteers with travel vouchers, but people forced off flights must be paid in cash or check. Critics say airlines often flout that rule. The Transportation Department recently fined Southwest Airlines $200,000 for that and other shortcomings in its bumping practices. When the government first regulated bumping three decades ago, passenger no shows were far more common. Today, with most airline tickets are deeply discounted and nonrefundable, no shows are much less of a problem. Planes are also more likely to be full due to cutbacks in airline schedules over the past two years. That means passengers who

are denied boarding because a flight is overbooked often have a harder time finding a seat on another flight. Interested parties have up to 60 days to submit comments to the Transportation Department. LaHood estimated DOT will finalize the new rules some time this fall.

Jackson’s hometown moves ahead with museum plans GARY, Ind. (AP) — Work could begin next year on a $300 million museum and arts center dedicated to Michael Jackson in his hometown, his father and Gary officials announced Wednesday. The late singer last visited Gary in 2003 to talk about the project, but no progress was made on it before his death last year. His father, Joe Jackson, said Wednesday that he was “just carrying out his legacy” by getting involved. “This is a happy day for me because this is something that my family and Michael have always wanted,” Joe Jackson said. “We’re bringing something back.” Gary Mayor Rudy Clay said the project would create thousands of jobs and, when finished, was expected to bring at least 750,000 visitors a year to the city. He estimated it would generate $100 million to $150 million in income for the community each year. “This project will be the magnet that will draw people from all over the world,” Clay said. The money to build the Jackson Family Museum and Hotel and the Michael Jackson Performing Arts and Cultural Center and Theaters will come from investors and donations, Clay said. After years of promises about the project but no action, residents were cautiously optimistic. People said they were hopeful because Wednesday’s announcement was the furthest along the project has ever come, with the city’s donation of 300 acres of land. Police Chief Gary O. Carter was impressed by Joe Jackson’s presence. “Why would he come all the way here if it wasn’t” going to happen, Carter said. Seretha Harvey, 24, grew up in Gary and said she hoped the project would happen, and that it would bring jobs and help change people’s image of the financially struggling city. “I’ve been in and out of Gary for the past few years, and I’ve seen it deteriorate. I’m worried about whether this is actually going to matriculate,” she said, but added, “I’m optimistic about it.”

Brooklyn Bridge getting a $500 million makeover NEW YORK (AP) — The Brooklyn Bridge has been through a lot in its

127 years, and now the New York icon needs a facelift. The famous 1.1-mile suspension bridge is getting a $500 million makeover, a project that includes a complete repainting and the repair of elements that were part of its original construction. Vice President Joe Biden joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg Wednesday to mark the beginning of the rehab, which is set to be completed in four years. The federal economic recovery act provided $30 million for the effort; the rest of the funding comes from the city and other federal sources. Standing in front of an access ramp where huge swaths of peeling paint exposed patches of rusted steel, Biden said the makeover was a “badly needed” upgrade for the beloved bridge.

“This bridge is an emblem of what this great country represents,” he said. The bridge, with its two neoGothic towers and elegant steel cables, is one of New York City’s most revered pieces of architecture. Designed by engineer John Augustus Roebling, it opened May 24, 1883, after 13 years of building at a cost of $15 million. The East River span — the subject of several books, a Ken Burns documentary and countless songs — helped spur the growth of the city’s outer boroughs. It also has played an important role in major events throughout city history, including on Sept. 11, 2001, when a flood of people fled lower Manhattan by walking across the bridge. The structure has been spruced up many times over the years, but not recently.

Travel Travel briefs Amtrak makes free wireless part of Acela service WASHINGTON (AP) — Free wireless will become a standard service for passengers on Amtrak’s Acela Express trains. Amtrak made the announcement Tuesday. It follows a three-month trial run in which all 20 of Amtrak’s Acela Express cars provided free service. A m t r a k s a y s a b o u t 11 5 , 0 0 0 passengers per month have used the service, or about 39 percent of ridership. It plans to expand the wireless service to other routes starting in the late fall of 2010. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Acela Express train service, which began operating in 2000. The trains make the trip from Washington to Boston in about six and a half hours, about an hour and a half faster than regional trains.

New NYC hotel offers up-close views of ground zero NEW YORK (AP) — The rooms at the new World Center Hotel are about as close as you can get to ground zero without a hard hat. The 169-room hotel just south of the World Trade Center site celebrated its grand opening Wednesday and Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed World Center Hotel Day. But in what hotel executives call a soft opening, guests have been staying there for months as construction was completed floor by floor. Deena Mendlowitz, an improv performer from Cleveland, said after checking out that it was “phenomenal” to see the rebuilding firsthand. Mendlowitz said she visited New York in 2002 and the trade center site was depressing then, just a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. “It’s more hopeful now,” she said. “It seems like they’re reaching the next phase, which is great.” Some of the hotel’s rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the trade center site or the former Deutsche Bank building, which was irreparably contaminated w h e n t h e t w i n t o w e r s w e re destroyed and is being dismantled. The 20th-floor restaurant terrace is just about level with the formerly 40-story Deutsche Bank tower. The hotel’s Web site advertises its proximity to the trade center rebuilding process and to the financial industry. Rooms start at $199. Some rooms have been made into corporate apartments for extended stays. “People choose to be here for a number of different reasons,” said Cheryl Palmer, vice president of

June 17, 2010

Club Quarters Inc., the company that’s opening the hotel. She added, “There are people who want to come and view the site. People do appreciate the opportunity to be as close as they are to the rebuilding.”

Grand Canyon West Airport is expanding H U A L A PA I INDIAN RESERVATION, Ariz. (AP) — A new terminal and welcome center will open next month at Grand Canyon West Airport with a new runaway expected to be in service by the end of this year. Airport officials said Tuesday that the runway will be 5,000 feet long and 75 feet wide with adjacent helipads accommodating both fixedwing planes and helicopters. The new terminal and welcome center total nearly 2,000 square feet and will contain all guest services including concierge, ticketing, gift shop, air tour terminal, hop-on-hopoff shuttle station, espresso bar and cafe. Grand Canyon West Airport began as a gravel air strip in the late 1980s serving air tours in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters from Las Vegas.

Surgery not required to change gender on passports WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Transgender travelers no longer will need surgery in order to change their stated genders on U.S. passports, the State Department said Wednesday. Beginning Thursday, a transgender person applying for a U.S. passport will just need to show a physician’s certification that the applicant has “undergone appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition” to declare a new gender on a passport, the department said. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said appropriate treatment could mean surgery for some patients and nonsurgical care for others. The State Department said there are guidelines detailing what the certification must include, but no other medical records are required. The government also said it’s

possible to obtain a temporary passport if a physician’s statement shows that an applicant is in the process of gender transition. Under previous rules, the State Department would only change the sex on passports if travelers had completed sexual reassignment surgeries, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality. But Keisling said that policy put some transgender people in jeopardy when they traveled through countries where changing genders is dangerous. The State Department says the new policy is based on standards and recommendations from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Jekyll Island makes new deals for $75M development S AVA N N A H , G a . ( A P ) — Revitalization plans for Jekyll Island got revived Wednesday after a six-month delay as t h e i s l a n d ’ s g o v e r n i n g b o a rd approved $75 million in private development for two hotels and a 4-acre beach village at the state park. Jones Hooks, executive director of the Jekyll Island Authority, exclaimed “hallelujah” after the board voted to finalize deals with three developers who will take over projects stalled since D e c e m b e r, w h e n t h e s t a t e ’ s prior private partner backed out because of the sour economy. N o t e v e r y b o d y w a s h a p p y. Mindy Egan of the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island said the p ro p o s e d a m e n i t i e s s e e m t o o upscale for a state park mandated by state law to be accessible to Georgians of average means. A new 200-room beachfront hotel next to a new convention center is projected to fetch average rates of $170-per-night. Average rates of $130-per-night are planned for a new mid-scale hotel nearby. A third developer will build the centerpiece beach village with 40,000-square-feet of space for shops and restaurants plus 60 loft apartments. “The presentation gave me the impression that the whole beach center complex is going upscale,”

LIFE • HOME • AUTO • FARM • BUSINESS

Egan said. “People come here so they can walk in their T-shirts and flip-flops and not feel like anybody’s looking down their noses at them.” Some of the criticism stemmed from officials’ prior promises that building a new economy hotel would be a priority for the island. Jekyll Island spokesman Eric Garvey said that was part of the now-defunct deal with former partner developer Linger Longer Communities. The new developers picking up the project now weren’t required to stick to those plans. “We have plenty of lodging inventory that fits the economy level” among the island’s older hotels, Garvey said. “The midscale is something we know there’s a market demand for. We’re very comfortable this is the right approach.” Jekyll Island has spent more than four years working toward a makeover to replace the island’s musty, aging convention center and hotels that have been blamed for a decline in visitors. Officials had to scramble to find new private partners to complete the projects by the summer of 2012, when the island’s new convention center is scheduled to open. The state is spending $50 million in the convention center and other improvements. The deals call for the developers to pay Jekyll Island about $374,000-a-year total in rent once the projects are finished. The island authority will also receive a percentage of revenues, Garvey said. “Jekyll Island, as Georgia’s jewel, needed a little polish,” said Bob Krueger, chairman of the authority’s board. “What we’ve seen merely enhances what is already Jekyll’s natural beauty.”

Insure it all. Prices fall.

Delays in anti-pilot fatigue rules criticized WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Lawmakers demanded Wednesday that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood write new rules aimed at preventing pilot fatigue, as he promised to do last year after an airline crash near Buffalo, N.Y., killed 50 people. The top Democratic and Republican members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and its aviation subcommittee sent LaHood a letter complaining that new rules governing how many consecutive hours airlines can require pilots to work haven’t been proposed by the Transportation Department. “Now is the time for DOT to fulfill its obligation to put forward new regulations,” the lawmakers said. “The safety of the traveling public is paramount and we urge DOT to follow through on its commitment.” LaHood responded to the letter, saying: “Safety is our number one priority and addressing pilot fatigue is a crucial step toward making our skies safer. This rule is under review and we’re working as quickly as possible to put forth a proposal.” Last June, LaHood and Federal Aviation Administrator Randy Babbitt convened a special committee of airlines and pilots’ unions to draft new regulations drawing on modern research on the causes and effects of fatigue. The committee delivered its recommendations to the FAA in September. At that time, Babbitt said the FAA would draft its own proposal and formally publish it before the end of the year.

Young foodies more exhibitionist, less highbrow Who needs a cookbook when there’s the World Wide Web? NEW YORK (AP) – Young people immersed in food culture today are as likely to praise a fish taco from a food truck as filet mignon from a four-star restaurant. T h e y d i d n ’ t re a d G o u r m e t magazine — the longtime bible of highbrow culinary taste stopped printing last year. But they do follow blogs and websites that feature everything from straight recipes to goofy fusions to bite-by-bite dispatches about last night’s dinner. And many young connoisseurs are kitchen amateurs. “The twentysomethings right now are probably one of the most educated food generations ever. And by that I mean they can talk to you about foie gras or cooking sous vide or the flavor profile of a Bordeaux,” said Cheryl Brown, editorial director of the popular website Slashfood. “But what they can’t do is truss a chicken or cook a pot roast. So there’s this funny balance of having an amazing breadth of food knowledge but not having the kitchen basics to back it up,” she said. Try to imagine a young Julia Child showing viewers how to make awesome 2-minute sashimi burgers or Robert Parker blogging about Red Bull and reisling for an idea of how attitudes have changed. Whether this amounts to a refreshing democratization of hoity-toity food culture or an invasion of “foodiots” depends on your point of view. But it’s clear that Internet culture,

Brian Kraus, who hosts a food blog, poses in his kitchen in Albany, N.Y.. Kraus loves to cook but has only one cookbook. When Kraus wanted tips on preparing a whole fish, he headed to the Web and did a “mishmash” of stuff he liked from different sites. with its tendency to knock down old-guard authority, continues to be the driving force. Consider cookbooks. Cooking enthusiasts traditionally had shelves groaning with cookbooks, maybe old reliables like “The Joy of Cooking” mixed with a Moosewood offering. David Kraus, a 24-year-old from Albany, N.Y., loves to cook but has only one cookbook. When Kraus wanted tips on preparing a whole fish, he headed to the Web and did a “mishmash” of stuff he liked from different sites. “I don’t really have cookbooks, probably because in our generation we’re more for the dynamic media,” Kraus said. “We want people to have a comment on our recipes.” Kraus posts his creations on his EatInAlbany.com blog, one of a mind-boggling number of food sites running the gamut from the heavily trafficked Epicurious and Food2 to bloggers like himself. If it’s about food, it’s online: Ti p s o n s l i c i n g f l a n k s t e a k ? Check. Recipes for fugu and frog croquettes? Yes and yes. How about

what 34-year-old New York City librarian Emily Drabinski had for lunch yesterday? You bet. “I guess I wanted a reason to put a stake down in my day, every day,” explains Drabinski, who blogs at WhatIAteForLunchAndWhy.com. Much of this information is useful, or at least interesting. But in a world where anyone can contribute to food discussions, anyone does. Highbrow types are hardly immune, contributing reports about eating fried squid or tuna with wasabi mayonnaise. “Foodiots,” scoffed Joe Pompeo in a New York Observer article last fall. He argued eating “has become a dominant, and perhaps obnoxious, part of our everyday cultural discourse.” Laura Shapiro, a culinary historian and author of “Julia Child: A Life,” sees it more like a best-of-times-worst-of-times era in food culture. The Web provides an unprecedented range of useful expert culinary advice. But there’s also “these dimwits who go to 16 restaurants a week and say, ’We had

this there, but couldn’t get in there.’ Who cares?” What seems like narcissism to some comes naturally to a generation that grew up on food TV shows that emphasized oversized personalities (think of Emeril’s “Bam!”) or turned cooking into a game (make this squid into a tasty meal in an hour!). M a r k L e v i n e , s i t e d i re c t o r for Food2, notes that their core audience of college-educated young women grew up in a world where they could buy sushi at the grocery store and eat pad thai in the school cafeteria. Haughty food culture is history. So Food2 — a kid sister to Scripps Networks’ Food Network — features recipes along with posts along the lines of 15th Annual Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss. “We didn’t want to take ourselves too seriously,” Levine said. That boundary blurring reflects the spirit of the times. It’s not just the increasingly eccentric fusion cuisines that have brought the world curry chitlins and the Wok A Mole Chinese-Mexican restaurant

in Texas. Highbrow and lowbrow don’t mean what they used to either when food trucks serve Marrakech lamb with couscous and fancy restaurants feature hamburgers. This mashed-up mix might be best symbolized by the McNuggetini, the tongue-in-cheek cocktail that made Web video stars out of the Los Angeles duo of Alie Ward, 31, and Georgia Hardstark, 29. Yes, the cocktail includes a McDonald’s entree and it’s as gross as it sounds. But the young pair ’s goofy presentations of the McNuggetini and other gag-worthy concoctions make the meat-and-booze idea easier to swallow. For all their stomach-churning mixology, Hardstark still prides herself on her cooking and loves a good meal. Like a lot of young people, she just doesn’t want to be a snob about it. “ O u r e n t re e s h a p p e n t o b e shameless and revolting,” said Ward, “but we both have foodie sensibilities.”

Dining Delights Joe’s Crab Shack Fairview Heights 2 1/2 stars Great fun, but for the price and what you get, not really a bargain. Wait staff sing and dance and very casual dining. Alfonzo’s Maryville 3 1/2 stars Food is awesome, especially the tomato basil pizza and their bread bites. Prices are a bit higher than you would expect to pay for a pizza dinner. Good for families with kids, they can play in the arcade while you are waiting on the food, just bring your wallet. Chevy’s Fresh Mex O’Fallon 4 1/2 stars One of my personal favorites, love their fresh salsa and chips. Also love their chicken fajita nachos. Portions are large and prices are very reasonable. Service has been great every time. Lone Star Steak House O’Fallon 4 stars Great steaks, seafood and chicken. Salads are good, including their Texas Ranch dressing. Of course they have “bloomin’ onions” and peanuts to munch on while you wait for your food. Fun atmosphere. Wasabi Edwardsville 4 stars Okay, I admit that I hesitantly give this four stars as I am not a lover of Sushi, nor am I an expert of Sushi. But, I have eaten their Shrimp Tempura, and have tasted some of their other dishes, all of which are very good. But those I went with love Sushi and claim that theirs is awesome. Service was very good and helpful. Buffet City Edwardsville 3 stars Huge selection of food. Chinese selections, American selections, both hot and cold. Some really good, some not so much. Dinner prices a little high if you are going as a

family. Good service. Finn Inn Grafton 3 stars Fun ambiance with fish tanks built into the wall. Watch the fish while you eat. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full.

Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat.

Dining Delights Summer is here – bring on those vegetables By J.M. HIRSCH Associated Press Finally — fresh peas for busy people. The trouble with frozen peas is that, no matter how you cook them, they tend to be mushy. Fresh peas are another world entirely. They are tender, but still a bit firm. And they have a pleasantly fresh taste lost in frozen and canned varieties. Of course, they also come in their pods. Which means to eat more than a smattering of them, you need to commit some time to popping them out. While that can be fun, and is a nice project for the kids, it doesn’t always fit with weekday cooking. So I was pleased to see that a growing number of grocers are carrying shelled fresh peas by the bag in the produce section. Of course, you do pay for the convenience, but the quality is good and the prep is effortless. Whether you buy them shelled or in the pod, try fresh peas in this simple bruschetta-like recipe. Thick slices of sourdough bread are toasted, then topped with a slab of brie and a quick

saute of asparagus, fresh peas and onion. The asparagus and pea mixture also would be good tossed with cooked pasta. If you go that route, cut up the brie as best you can and toss that in, too. You may need to add 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water to help create a sauce to coat the pasta. ASPARAGUS AND PEA TOASTS WITH BRIE Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4 2 tablespoons butter 4 large slices rustic sourdough bread (1/2-inch-thick) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 small yellow onion, diced 1 bunch asparagus, bottoms trimmed, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 cup fresh peas Salt and ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 6 to 8 ounces brie Heat the oven to broil.

Divide the butter between the bread slices, spreading it evenly over one side of each. Set aside. In a large skillet over medium, heat the olive oil. Add the garlic, onion, asparagus and peas. Saute until the asparagus is just barely tender, about 4 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the mint. Set aside. Place the bread slices under the broiler. Toast until just lightly browned and the butter is melted. Remove the bread from the oven and smear a quarter of the brie over each slice. Return to the broiler for another minute. Top each slice with a quarter of the asparagus and pea mixture.
