Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. So it is a necessity to have a trustworthy mode of transportation. But at some point your are likely to find yourself in an accident. It is vital to choose an auto body shop that
If the person seems both knowledgeable and helpful, keep that shop on your short list. If the person seems rushed or uninterested, it can mean that the shop is too busy right now or just simply has poor customer service. In either case, you can eliminate that shop from your list. Once you have chosen a shop, check for
HOW TO...
Choose an Auto Body Shop you can depend on. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Even the smallest accident can throw your entire car, and schedule, into disarray. You’ll need an auto body shop that you can consult when you have an accident to ensure your car is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly the first time. Talk to your friends and family that live near you and ask which auto body shops they prefer. Once you have a list of names, consult the Internet for more information and customer reviews. Internet testimonials, both positive and negative, should be taken with a grain of salt. No business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate, no matter what they say. Someone will always be displeased. Also, keep in mind that people are more apt to leave a negative review than a positive one. If you can’t get any good recommendations from friends or family, consult the Yellow Pages or perform an Internet search. After you have created a short list of auto body shops, make some phone calls. Describe to the person who answers the phone your exact problem and pay attention to the type of response you get.
plainly displayed prices, certifications and guarantees. Be aware that you most often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they may also mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is not applied properly. Ask the shop manager or owner for references before you have them work on your car. They should be more than happy to provide names of customers with whom you can speak. Also be sure to look at their work. If you notice a car with paint drips, panels that don’t line up or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not be saving money in the long run if you have to have the work redone. Make sure that the shop is able to inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not visible. Choosing a shop that can complete the entire job will save you from having to take your car to several places for a complete repair. Picking a great auto body shop is the first step in getting your car back on the road. Once you have made your selection, you should be comfortable with every aspect of the shop: customer service, price and quality of work.

Lawn tractors can help cut down the time it takes to mow your lawn. A high-quality vehicle can assist you with a variety of tasks, making landscaping easier and even more enjoyable. It’s very important to find the right fit for you in order to get the features you need and want. Everyone knows it’s important to use the right tool for the job. Finding a good lawn tractor that is built to last will go a long way toward making your job
The transmission and speed is also a factor. How easy is it for you to change gears and turn in different directions? The zero-turn mower is another popular option. These vehicles can turn quickly and precisely to cut lawns of all sizes and shapes. While they have been used for years by commercial lawn crews, only recently have these mowers become affordable for the average homeowner.
HOW TO...
Choose a Lawn Tractor less of a hassle. THE RIGHT FIT Lawn tractors come in a variety of capabilities and price points. Most range from $1,500 for a simple, basic model to $10,000 or more for a fullyfeatured, commercial-grade tractor. In between, you will find a vast mixture of features and durability. You can select the right model by asking yourself how you will use the lawn tractor. The size of your lawn is important, of course. Bigger lawns need a wider mowing deck. You should also consider other things you will do with your lawn tractor. High-end lawn tractors are more like pieces of farm equipment than traditional ride-on mowers. You can purchase accessories for them, such as baggers, trailers, powerful tillers and snowblowers. You are not only buying a lawn mower. These tractors are platforms that can be used for all kinds of jobs. So check on the accessories that come with each model, even if you don’t plan on purchasing them yet. You may appreciate the choices in the future. SPEED, MANEUVERABILITY Most people want to finish the job in the least amount of time. While it is true that large mowing decks will cover more ground with each pass, there are other things to consider as well.
Zero-turn mowers are particularly useful when mowing close to homes, playground equipment and other tight areas. DURABILITY The longevity of your lawn tractor is also an important consideration. The brand’s reputation should weigh heavily when you are making a decision. Research consumer reviews and talk to your friends and family members about the best brands of lawn products. Also, visiting a retail store and talking to knowledgable salespeople will also help you. There are plenty of low-end, affordable riding mowers out there, but few have a reputation for durability. It is economical in the long run to choose a well-built model from a reputable manufacturer. Inspect the construction of each lawn mower carefully to verify that it will meet your needs. While you probably don’t need the extreme engineering and high price of a commercial-grade model, you ought to buy the best model you can afford and follow the maintenance directions closely. It will help you get the most usage for your money. Finding a good dealer is an essential part of the process. When you locate an experienced local retailer with a long track record of happy customers, you will be well on your way to selecting the right lawn tractor for you.

When should I replace my existing heating and cooling unit(s)? The time frame to replace an existing unit would be anywhere from 15-20 years old. Also, when replacing a unit (heater or air conditioner), it’s not necessary to replace both units when just one fails. In most cases it depends on the age of the equipment, most often the air conditioner will fail before the furnace.
system but will soon pay for it self in utility savings. Not every home is suited for a geo system; ground loops are often times the problem. If your home sets on a smaller lot or on rocky soil, you may not have the available area to place the loops. Installation is another factor when considering a new HVAC system. Ask the contractor for
HOW TO... Select and Save on
Your Heating & Cooling Systems Choosing the correct company to install the equipment is just as important as choosing the right equipment. A poorly installed high efficient system can be less efficient than a properly installed standard system. Many of the top name brands available have the same standard warranty. When choosing higher end HVAC equipment, the warranty usually increases as well. This is an added bonus because the higher end equipment typically has more expensive parts. Typically the most expensive parts on a furnace are the electronics, i.e. the control board, and on the A/C typically it’s the compressor. You may also inquire about extended warranties the manufacture may offer. Furnaces have different efficiency ratings which are indicated as a percentage, the higher the percentage, the more efficient the unit. Higher efficiency furnaces produce the same amount of heat as lower efficiency units of the same output BTU size. The difference is that the higher efficiency furnaces use less gas to do so, thereby saving you money. Geo-thermal systems are a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to heat and cool your home. Typically geo systems are more expensive to install initially due to the cost of the ground loop installation and the equipment cost 2-3 times that of a conventional
a load calculation on your home. This will tell you how many BTU’s are required to heat and cool your home. Make sure they inspect your ductwork for possible air leaks and proper sizing, mismatched systems will cost you more to operate and can cause premature problems with the equipment. Cost is another factor when deciding on a HVAC contractor and the equipment he will be selling you. It is best practice to get at least three estimates from HVAC dealers. Often, equipment will fail at the most inopportune times, when this happens it’s hard to resist the temptation to just say yes to the first estimate you get. Some contractors try to push you into purchasing their equipment right away; a reputable contractor will not be pushy and will give you the time needed to make an educated decision. Be cautious of the contractors willing to “give” you the air conditioner for “free” if you purchase the furnace. In reality you’re paying for the equipment it’s just hidden in the cost. Manufactures don’t give their equipment away to the dealer for free. Ask your HVAC dealer for references for past jobs. Ask the customer how well they liked the contractor, where they on-time, did they hold to the price they quoted. Call the Better Business Bureau and check into the contractors past to see if they have had any claims. Hopefully we have given you enough information to make you realize that brand alone is not as important as once thought.

Making funeral arrangements can be hard. Dealing with the death of a loved one is a challenge. That’s why it is better to think ahead so you can have a clear mind while making these difficult decisions. Most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals. When the time comes

The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices
HOW TO...
Choose a Funeral Home to visit a funeral home, they find prices vary dramatically. Indeed, funerals can be costly. Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when you must select a funeral home. The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been planned. If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those wishes. If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the deceased. If you are in this situation, look around to see if another funeral home has a better arrangement, or make adjustments as necessary. Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be
are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges. Do not decide on a funeral home right away. Think about it for a bit. The decision should be made with clarity, free from emotion. After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget. Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want. Tell them if something is not being done according to your intentions. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of grief and hardship, preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace.

A reputable Realtor and real estate agency can make a big difference when you buy or sell a home. There are thousands of dollars at stake. You could get the asking price or maybe you will have to settle for the best offer on the table. A real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency.
The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly influence the sale of your home. Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find a business with a
HOW TO...
Choose a Real Estate Agency Reputation says a lot about a company. What do people say about their services. Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. If an agency is focusing on their own best interests rather than marketing your home, you should drop them from you list. You need someone who will help you. Choose an agency that has connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the Realtor helps you find your new one.
focus that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours. Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? The size of the agency will have an impact on your experience. Small agencies can provide more personalized service, but they may not have the networking advantages of a large company. Big agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home, but they may have to divide their time among many clients. Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: -- How will you advertise my home? Will you use the Internet and newspapers? -- How many pictures of my house will appear online? -- On which sites will my home be featured? -- Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? -- How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? -- What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime is buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency you can find.

Today's retirees want a lot more than rocking chairs. As more Americans remain active in retirement, they are looking for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. When deciding on a retirement community, a series of factors should be taken into consideration, including the price, amenities and activities offered.
PET POLICIES If you have a pet that you do not want to leave behind, this is another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some facilities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES These days, senior citizens are more active and health conscious than ever before. Many want to keep their activity levels high during their retirement years. Thus, it is important to research whether such activities are easily accessible at any prospective retirement community. Many seniors also enjoy participating in arts and crafts, board games, dancing and other organized activities. Taking part in a wide range of social activities can provide a tremendous opportunity for retirees to make new friends, so pay attention to what social events are organized by the retirement community. It is also useful to research whether prospective retirement communities provide opportunities for residents to venture further on organized trips to theaters, museums and other events.
You should also know where the nearest libraries and churches are located, as well as where you can access public transportation such as trains and buses. You will also want to ask whether the retirement community provides its own transportation for local trips. Some communities have their own fleet of minivans and buses for the purpose of providing local transportation. This is extremely helpful for seniors who no longer drive, do not have access to a vehicle or simply need to do some routine personal shopping.
CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS
HOW TO... Choose the Best Retirement Community for your Needs
MEDICAL CARE FACILITIES It is advisable to conduct research prior to choosing a facility so that you know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other health professionals. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers.
THE COMMUNITY When selecting a retirement community, it makes sense to talk with current residents to get a feel for their level of satisfaction with the neighborhood. Ask questions about their experiences since moving into the community and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. By taking the time to research multiple facilities, you can be sure to find more than just a place to live. You can find a warm, welcoming community in which you will build lasting friendships and where you can get the support you need to thoroughly enjoy your retirement.

Pregnancy is a huge milestone in a woman’s life. It is also incredibly stressful. There are so many things to consider. One of the most essential decisions is choosing a maternity care provider. If your gynecologist is also an obstetrician, it means she can deliver babies and perform a C-section, if needed. It is likely you can

Choose the Best Maternity Care continue seeing the same practitioner. But if you need to find a new maternity care provider, there are a few things to consider. Recommendations One of the most effective ways to find a good practitioner is to ask your family and friends who have been through the birthing process. Inquire about their experiences. Most people will have strong opinions about the quality of their care. In particular, seek out people who have had complicated pregnancies or births. Your primary care physician should also have recommendations for you. Compile the list of names and check your insurance to see if those doctors are covered by your policy. Office Visit Once you have narrowed your list of potential providers, make an appointment to see the top two or three. This first appointment is like an audition or interview. Observe everything. How does the staff treat patients? Is there a long wait? Is the office clean? Do you have a good feeling about this doctor? Sometimes doctors have a reputation for performing C-sections when they are not needed. Ask to see the doctor’s C-section
more personalized attention. Some women feel more comfortable with a midwife. If you prefer minimal medical intervention, a midwife can be a great choice. In some cases, you can even give birth at home. Just remember that a midwife is not a doctor. If your pregnancy or childbirth runs into complications, you will still need to go to a local hospital. Delivering the Baby Your maternal care provider needs to be available when it is time for you to give birth. Your chosen caregiver should have no vacations scheduled near your due date. Find out what happens if she is unavailable when you go into labor. Some ob/gyns work at a practice with other doctors. They may rotate being on delivery duty. If this is the case with your doctor, schedule some of your prenatal checkups with the other practitioners so you can get to know them better. Giving birth is a thrilling yet tumultuous time in a woman’s life. Choosing a good maternity care provider will go a long way toward easing the process of having a baby.

More than 150 million bikes are produced in the world each year, with Americans buying more than 15 million of those to the tune of $6 billion per year. Riders have lots of choices in what kind of bicycle is correct for their situation, how much to spend and where to buy. It is important to know what kind of bicycle you
Next, choose a shop that has a good education program. These programs should show you the pros and cons of each bike and help you to make the best selection based on your individual needs. Also, attend events in your biking specialty. Look at who is sponsoring these events, and ask people in your specialty about their experiences with various bike shops.
HOW TO...
Choose a Bike Shop need before you start looking for a bike shop – different shops specialize in different types of bikes. In the United States, bicycles fall into four main categories – comfort bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes and fitness bikes. Comfort bikes are the least expensive and are meant to be ridden in an upright position on smooth surfaces. Mountain bikes are built for rugged terrain. These bikes feature wide, knobby tires that will not go flat easily and offer the best shock absorption to keep the rider comfortable over roots and rocks. Road bikes are the most aerodynamic, and are meant to be ridden on pavement over a long distance. Fitness bikes are more comfortable than road bikes, but less aerodynamic. They require the rider to put forth more effort, which increases the number of calories burned. After deciding what kind of bike you want, research shops that offer that specialty. This will allow you to find the best fit most easily. Search the Internet, read online reviews and ask other riders about shops with a good reputation in your specialty, then look for a shop that has been in business for a few years. While not always true, this generally means that they will be there for years to come offering you service after the sale.
Once you have your list of shops narrowed down to two or three, visit the shops. The first thing to look for during a visit is a knowledgeable salesperson. This person should be able to discuss different bikes from personal experience. Look for a shop that will allow you to test drive a bike at a setting of your choice. Sometimes, it will be necessary to leave a deposit to protect the bike shop’s investment. Look for a shop that offers fully assembled bikes. This will assure you that the bike is correctly assembled and adjusted. Each nut and bolt has a specific purpose. The sales associate should be willing to help you choose the right size bike and to adjust it to your individual requirements. Finally, look for a shop that offers activities to help you meet other people involved in this sport. This will keep you encouraged to ride often. Buying your bike is the start of a great adventure. By knowing what type of bike you want to purchase and doing your research on shops dealing in that specialty, you’ll be ready for miles and miles of fitness and fun.

Choosing the right dentist will go a long way toward helping you maintain your health and appearance. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a complex dental procedure, finding the right dentist will save you time and money. No one wants to have a root canal redone because of shoddy work.
services. If you break a tooth or need to have a root canal done right away, it is vital to find an available dentist. Lead time for appointments is another consideration. HOW TO...
Choose the Right Dentist It is vital that you find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable, someone who will help you improve your dental health in a hygienic environment. Finding a dentist near your home or workplace will help you make your appointments on time. As well, their office hours should accommodate your schedule. So how should you start your search? First off, ask your social network for recommendations. Friends, family and colleagues can be a great resource. Searching on the Internet for dental offices in your area will also help. Professionals often have their own websites, which include the backgrounds of those working there. The website may also tell you about how they handle procedures and appointments, as well as specialized services they offer. Once you have gathered a list, begin calling each prospective dentist. You can talk to a receptionist or other staff person if the dentist is unavailable. Check that he or she has earned the necessary degree from a reputable school and are current on all licensing and continuing educational requirements. Ideally, he will be familiar with the latest dental technologies and trends. Ask if the dental office provides emergency
your dental insurance. If not, you may need to cross that person off your list. If you have no dental insurance, inquire about payment plans. The office should give you an estimate before performing any work. When someone meets all of your requirements, visit the office. The staff should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer all of your questions. Some people are afraid of dentists or pain. If you have any concerns, communicate with the staff and dentist. Many professionals are willing to go above and beyond to help you work through these issues. A basic oral health history should be taken by the dentist or staff. They should tell you about future treatment and prevention options. A quality dentist will help you feel comfortable during your visit. If you experience anything less, cross that person off your list. The best dentists offer friendly, happy dental experiences. Teeth are extremely important to your overall health. They can also help or hinder your appearance. Finding a good dentist is like finding a friend who consistently brings out your best smile.

Floor carpeting helps set the decorating tone for a room. It also gives warmth and protection for your family and pets. With hundreds of choices available, it is possible to find the perfect carpet to fit your family’s lifestyle and budget. Carpeting is a long-term purchase, and you should expect your carpeting to last for years. So choose wisely since you will be living with
dimensions to the carpet store and let them do the estimate and discuss possible seams. Most carpet stores will give precise estimates for free or at a low cost. 3. Consider the color and texture that will most suit your needs. You might want to create a warmer feel, lighten a dark room or match existing décor.

Choose Your Carpet Selection When you find a carpet you think is right, take a sample home to determine whether it is actually what you want.
your choice for many years. In order to choose the best carpet for your home and to ensure you get the best value for your investment, consider the following: 1. Consider the pros and cons of wall-towall carpeting. Wall-to-wall carpeting is the most popular choice. It is permanent, though, and tends to be more costly; you have the cost of padding and installation added to the cost of the actual carpet. 2. Figure out how much you can afford to spend. Quality carpeting will last longer, wear better and be more stain resistant, so it is wise to choose the best carpeting you can afford. When determining cost for an area rug, measure the room and determine how much, if any, of the bare floor you want exposed. Area rugs tend to come in standard sizes, 5-by-8 or 9-by-12, and so on. There are some beautiful area rugs, patterned or solid, available at reasonable prices. When calculating the cost of wall-to-wall carpeting, bear in mind that it, too, comes in standard widths. If you have an especially large or oddly shaped room, you may have waste or seams. If you feel you are unable to get an accurate estimate yourself, bring the
4. Consider the options on where to buy carpeting. You can purchase carpeting from large stores, warehouses and small niche carpet dealers. Each has its benefits and drawbacks. You can even purchase carpeting online. Generally, the store with the lowest cost will also have the most limited services. Some smaller suppliers will bring samples to your house and make measurements before quoting a price. Visit a number of showrooms and ask lots of questions. Small flooring stores will tend to put their focus on service. They may offer discounts for ongoing services after the sale such as carpet cleaning and stain- resistance protection. One advantage of big box stores is that they often have financing plans. These warehouse stores often offer a package deal that includes not only carpeting but also padding and installation. But they tend to have limited and relative bland options. They offer low prices because they buy a few standard type carpets and buy a lot of them.

The average American eats out one of every four meals. That means we are eating 25 percent of our meals outside of the home. Many people choose to eat out more often than that. Here are some things to consider when selecting a fine restaurant.
Food Cuisine in five-star restaurants varies widely with each restaurant having its own specialty. The best way to learn about the menu at a topnotch restaurant is to look at its website. Most five-star restaurants will post their menus online. Ask all people in the party what they feel like eating. If someone is on a special diet,
HOW TO...
Choose a Fine Restaurant Ratings One way that a consumer can find out about the quality of a restaurant is to read the Zagat reviews. These reviews have been written since 1979. More than 156,000 surveyors ate out 25 million times, each offering their opinion on the quality of food and service at a variety of restaurants. Zagat gives a total of 30 points to any given establishment. Each establishment is also given a letter grade. Another great source when looking for a top restaurant is Michelin. Since the early 1900s, Michelin, better known for its tires, has produced restaurant guides for numerous countries around the world. Unlike, Zagat, it relies on a professional to personally visit each of the restaurants that are then given star ratings. The company gives each recognized restaurant a rating from one star to five stars. Each restaurant can also receive additional rankings for being cost-effective or for having a grand view. Trip Advisor is a great online source for restaurant rankings. A viewer can search for restaurants in many cities and with different cuisines. They can then read what writers have to say about the establishment.
be sure to take that into consideration. Many restaurants now offer heart-healthy meals or low carbohydrate meals. Furthermore, someone in the party may simply not like a given cuisine. Budget If money is a consideration, there are ways to get a better deal. Most restaurants offer a cheaper lunch menu. Many others have great deals in the middle of the afternoon. Eating at these times will assure that you get to try the restaurant’s great food without breaking the bank. Other great restaurants offer outstanding specials. It is perfectly acceptable when making a reservation to ask about any special the restaurant is offering. If you are treating the whole party, order the special for everyone when making your reservation. This will save time and will assure you of being able to pay the bill. Some restaurants offer coupons, which are a great way to save money when trying a new restaurant. These coupons can often be found in the Sunday newspapers where the restaurant is advertised. Also look online for these coupons and print them out before visiting the restaurant. Eating out at five-star restaurants can be great fun. Just remember to check the reviews first. Then stay on budget. Try the tasting menu for the best opportunity to try a wide variety of foods.

With the advent of new shoe soling materials and the recent growth trend of European Fashion Comfort, women today have some of the broadest selections of attractive and comfortable footwear to choose from. Today, comfort is fashion—a trend many women hope is here to stay. Foot comfort and foot health is often a
cushioning and shock absorption: i.e. latex or polyurethane; • a broader and deeper toe shape; • a design (pattern) that comes up higher on the instep; • a store that knows and cares about fitting— and has a selection of choices for you to choose from.
HOW TO... Choose a Comfortable
Casual, Career & Dress Shoe function of shoe selection. The wrong shoes can cause pain and discomfort. Women should select from lower heels with broader bases that will help take pressure off of the ball of the foot. For additional forefoot comfort, select a style with a broader and deeper toe shape that actually fits the shape of your feet. Experts recommend that you choose a style with a shock absorbent sole and padding at the ball of the foot—made from either latex or polyurethane. Today, many such styles exist—a vast improvement over the leather-bottomed, pointed shapes of yester-year. Pointed, leather-bottomed dress shoes on high heels are a recipe for discomfort and foot problems such as bunions, neuromas, hammertoes, etc. Shoes that come up higher on the instep provide a better all-around fit. The instep is a stronger part of the foot than the toes. Shoes that hold-on through the instep don’t have to hold so much through the toes. These shoes allow the toes more room and comfort than low-cut shoes. When selecting a Career or Dress shoe, look for: • a low (10/8” or less) broad based heel; • a good, firm heel counter; • sole and heel materials that provide
Very tired feet should consider using dressy footbed sandals as dress shoes (one of the great advantages of Spring/Summer over Fall/Winter). There are many dressy footbed sandals that have tremendous support but still look great. Some footbed sandals even come in black patent leather and have higher heels. The construction of these sandals provides almost as much support as a custom foot orthosis. It helps to think outside the box: look at all of the waking hours in your week and maximize the number of hours spent in truly foot-friendly footwear. If you have to wear pumps for eight hours at work, wear a footbed sandal, casual shoe, walking shoe, or athletic shoe at home or on the weekends. By resting and supporting your feet during your “off hours” you give the muscles and joints in your feet the rest they need for the working week—and make your dressier shoes more comfortable. Did You Know? • According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, seventy-five percent of all Americans will develop a foot problem in their lifetime. • Approximately 88 percent of American women wear shoes that are too small for them.

important to understand the differences between how a man feels when he is having a heart attack and a woman feels when she is having a heart attack. Chest Pressure Like men, a woman having a heart attack will often feel chest pain. However, the chest pain is often lower. This leads some women to feel that the discomfort is coming from their stomachs rather than their chest. Shortness of Breath Almost six out of ten women who are having a heart attack feel that they are short of breath. Like men, this will cause the woman to want to rest, which will lessen the symptoms in some cases. Extreme Fatigue The woman having a heart attack will feel unusually tired. Selecting a daycare can seem like a daunting task. It is important that you choose a place where you’ll feel comfortable leaving your child. Daycares can vary widely in terms of professionalism and quality, so it is vital that you research each place you are considering. Making on-site visits will tell you plenty about the quality of the facility. Schedule an appointment
The lighting needs to be adequate. Inspect the bathrooms, dining areas and nap rooms. Everything should be decorated with children in mind. Look outside at the play areas. Every area should be designed with safety in mind. Look for locks on doors, sharp edges and dangerous objects that might be in a child’s reach.
HOW TO... Choose the Best Daycare
for Your Child
with the director so you can ask questions. Have your children accompany you on this trip so you can see how they will react to this environment. Observe your child and gauge his or her comfort level. Here are other factors to consider when choosing a daycare. STAFF The quality of a daycare rests on its employees. These staff people must be reliable and responsible. Request information on background checks of the staff. Ask about the ratio of caregivers to children. Adults cannot do their jobs effectively when they have to care for 30 children at once with no extra assistance. Good hygiene habits are a must. Sickness is easily spread among children and adults at a daycare. Observe how the employees interact with children. They should communicate well and like kids. The best daycare employees do not play favorites. They spend equal time with everyone and make every child feel important. BUILDING The facility should be in a safe and inviting environment. It should have bright colors and fun decor.
ENTERTAINMENT AND ACTIVITIES No child should be bored at a daycare. Highquality daycares offer activities to keep your child preoccupied throughout the day. Ask the director what kind of activities are available for children. It should be a mixture of free play and structured activities. Crafts, music, stories and age-appropriate lessons will help your child grow. DISCIPLINE Discipline is an essential issue. Ask the daycare how they deal with specific discipline issues. What are the consequences for undesirable behavior? Also, if your child has difficulties with sharing, talk to them about how they might handle it. They should give you thoughtful answers. Ask for a copy of the daycare’s rules. Selecting a daycare is such an important decision. Look at each option thoroughly before making a final decision. Follow your gut instinct. If you feel something is wrong at a particular facility, don’t be afraid of crossing them off your list. You can find another daycare that is more comfortable for you and your child. With a bit of close observation and intuition, you should have no trouble finding a suitable daycare for your child.

Heating and air conditioning are a modern luxury many people take for granted. You adjust the thermostat and settle in comfortably. That is, until your HVAC system fails, leaving you sweltering in the summer or freezing in the winter. Prevent equipment failure and prolong the life of your HVAC system by hiring a quality professional to service and maintain it.
interest. If a worker is injured or causes any damage on your property, you’ll want his employer’s insurance to cover it. Otherwise, you may have to file a claim on your homeowner’s insurance, which could result in increased premiums. Before your HVAC company starts a project, check to insure that all the required building permits are in place. Many of the better
HOW TO...
Choose a HVAC Company Look for a contractor you will be comfortable using for years to come. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a bad one can cost you a lot of money, cause you frequent headaches and put you in uncomfortable situations. Recommendations and referrals from past and present customers are your first line of defense. Ask neighbors, relatives and friends who they recommend. Once you’ve developed a short list of likely candidates, check out their reputations with the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or builders’ association and perhaps your town’s building inspection office. Avoid companies that have a long list of complaints lodged against them. After you’ve eliminated the potential problem HVAC shops, call the remaining ones to ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties, their average time to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. Your HVAC company should also service what it sells. Find out if you need to buy a separate service contract or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of the new installation. It’s very important to know if they provide around-theclock emergency service. Make sure a company is fully licensed, bonded and insured. You may think this is being overly inquisitive, but it’s in your best
companies will file the permits for you at the local building codes office. Don’t take this for granted. Check with the permitting office first, because any work performed without the proper permits could become a major headache for you. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The company you hire should do this. The best ones don’t cut corners by using a general rule of thumb for sizing equipment rather than doing a thorough calculation. Don’t assume that a load calculation was done before the old system was installed. Buildings can change shape slightly over time due to foundations settling and cracks widening, affecting the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t automatically replace the old unit with a new one of the same size. If your old unit didn’t heat or cool your home adequately, you will want to install a new one that does. And a system that’s too big will be inefficient. Talk with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model that will best get the job done. Follow up by having your HVAC contractor check over the system yearly to make sure it’s running at peak efficiency. With these guidelines, you can select a quality HVAC business you can rely on for years.

People who suffer from back, head or neck pain, often find relief by visiting a chiropractor. These trained professionals believe that realigning your spine will help relieve tension throughout the body. Treatments can also help your muscles, joints, bones and ligaments. This type of care can improve your general health as well. Some patients discover
In addition, most chiropractors offer affordable payment plans or low cash rates to help patients who aren’t covered by insurance. Even without health insurance, many people still find that chiropractic care is a cost-effective method of treatment that gets good results. HOW TO...
Choose a Chiropractor headaches and other ailments heal after treatments. Whether you are experiencing pain or just want to improve your overall well-being, you might benefit from seeing a chiropractor. Here are some tips for finding the right chiropractor to fit your needs. Quality According to the American Chiropractic Association, accredited chiropractors go through at total of at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training time combined. The educational requirements are among the most stringent in the health care industry. Each student spends four years in a pre-medical program, in addition to the required four or five years of professional training. This rigorous training ensures you will receive expert care. Before choosing a chiropractor, ask about their training and credentials. Insurance Coverage Check with your insurance company to make sure your visit is covered. Most insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage. Find out if your insurance company offers discounts for choosing an “in-network” chiropractor, such as a lower co-pay or more affordable coverage.
your family, friends and co-workers for referrals. Chances are someone you know has received excellent treatment from a chiropractor. They are usually happy to share their experiences with you. Ask about the chiropractor’s demeanor and the ease with which you can schedule office visits. You should inquire about the chiropractor’s philosophy about health and other wellness topics. Some practitioners will also recommend other forms of care, including massage. By taking your time to find a good chiropractor in your area, you are guaranteeing yourself the affordable, convenient and effective health benefits that come from chiropractic care. With the cost of medical care skyrocketing, chiropractic care is still rather affordable. Given the results it can provide, it is also usually well worth the money. Unlike the ridiculous amount of time spent in waiting rooms for large doctor’s offices, chiropractors are usually quick to see their patients. Despite the hectic schedule you may have, they can usually find a time that fits into your busy day. Overall, people are satisfied with the care they get from their chiropractor and will gladly tell you about it. However, the best way to see what it is like is to try it for yourself.

More than 40 million Americans suffer some degree of hearing loss, frequently affecting day-to-day life for them and the people around them. To reduce the potentially serious consequences of hearing loss, such as safety issues and isolation, many people seek out hearing aids to help them live richer, fuller lives.
enabling the wearer to hear conversations clearly even in crowded settings. Like most electronic devices, the way hearing aids are designed can make a big difference in their performance and their pricing. Two hearing aids that look similar may actually sound very different based on how the electronics work inside them. Nearly all of today’s hearing aids are
HOW TO...
Choose a Quality Hearing Aid Hearing aids are highly technical medical devices, customized to meet the patient’s specific needs. Every person’s ear canal and type of hearing loss is different, ranging from mild to severe, and often affecting some frequency ranges more than others. Today’s hearing aids use digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies the patient needs most, and many of them are so small they’re virtually invisible. Here’s a look at how to choose hearing aids: Styles Hearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, and a specialist can help you pick the right ones to meet your needs. Among the most popular are hearing aids that fit completely within the ear canal. These are virtually impossible to see, but their small size means they are typically more expensive and may not have as long a battery life as larger hearing aids. Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, behind-the-ear and open-fit hearing aids. Internal Electronics Each hearing aid also comes with advanced electronics that will amplify the correct frequencies and help your hearing be as close to natural as possible. The best ones can filter out background noise,
digital, which results in better sound and more customization options for people who suffer from hearing loss. If you have outdated hearing aids, it may be smart to consider upgrading to the more modern devices because of how much better they sound and how much more easily they can be hidden within your ear. Options Just like the options list when you buy a new car, hearing aids can be fitted with special features that may be helpful for you. Some examples: BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS: Some hearing aids are able to connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as cellular phones, to let you hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aids. TELEPHONE ADAPTERS: These devices can sense when you’re talking on the phone and adjust the sound to make it clearer while you talk. DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: If you want to only hear that sound directly in front of you, such as when you’re having one-on-one conversations with a person, a directional microphone can improve your hearing. Some can be switched between directional mode for conversations and nondirectional for more general hearing, like at a concert.

Choosing a college or university is an important, very personal decision that you should research extensively. Crucial selection criteria can help when sorting through admission catalogs and visiting websites or local college fairs. Prepare a list of five to seven schools, advises Dr. Joni Bastian, vice president for student affairs at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. “You may want to include both larger and smaller schools if you are unsure about the size
students who have been exceptionally active in their schools or communities. Many independent scholarships can be researched and applied for online. Additionally, grants are available from the federal and state governments, and from the institutions themselves. The financial aid office can help you and your family understand the process for obtaining scholarships, grants and private aid. of the campus you want to attend,” she says. Admission counselors—professionals who work for colleges and universities—will guide you through the decision process but before you apply, consider the following: Does the college offer quality academic programs? Colleges offer a wide variety of academic programs, from liberal arts to pre-professional. If your major is not listed but you are interested in other programs, you may have an opportunity to minor, pursue independent study or selfdesign a major. Undecided on a major? A liberal arts curriculum will expose you to a variety of subjects as you complete your general education requirements. Ask what services are provided to help you decide on a major. “Remember that it is common to change your major and that it’s OK to not declare a major during your first year,” Bastian says. Make sure you meet academic requirements for application. Many colleges and universities require qualified ACT or SAT scores and these tests are given throughout the year. Some give a writing proficiency exam to students seeking admission. Others require high school students to have taken some college preparatory courses. Most colleges want high school records to check an incoming student’s grade point average minimums. How will you pay for tuition? Financial aid is available through grants, loans and a variety of scholarships. These are based on financial need or good grades and activities outside the classroom. For example, scholarships may be offered to athletes or to
Will you live on campus? Living on campus is a great way to immerse yourself into the college community. It makes it easier to meet people and get involved. Research indicates that students who are engaged with their learning community are more likely to succeed in school. Some schools require first and second-year students to live in campus housing; some do not allow them to have vehicles on campus; and others offer limited housing. Compare the cost of room and board to that of commuting from home or living in town. Do you need special attention? A small student-to-faculty ratio offers more opportunity to participate actively in class, know your professors and receive personal attention. Many colleges and universities offer tutoring, special testing environments or academic support centers to help students succeed. If accessibility is an issue, inquire about ways to get around the campus. Where is the school located? Location is important not only for commuter students but also those who want to get involved in the community. It can also affect the availability of internships and employment opportunities. Internships are programs that give you an opportunity to work part-time in the field you are studying. As a student intern, you can gain valuable work experience and make connections in your chosen profession. Urban area colleges and universities may be accessible via public transportation; however, some students may not

feel comfortable living in a big city. Suburban schools offer convenient access to the city but transportation may be limited. A rural environment may be regarded as safe but offers limited professional and cultural opportunities. Safety is an important factor to consider when selecting a school. Be sure to ask what the college or university does to keep its students safe. If you choose to live on campus, you should factor in the cost and means of traveling to and from home for special
Why visit the campus? Visiting the campus is very important, emphasizes Bastian. “Often you can tell immediately if it is a good match or not, just by how friendly the campus community is during your visit.” Try to visit at least twice. Arrange the first one with an admission counselor. Request a campus tour that includes seeing the residence halls where students live, and an opportunity to meet with a professor in your academic field.

Some admission offices host Facebook groups or live web chats, where prospective students can talk to current students or admission counselors.
occasions, holidays and spring breaks. How does the school encourage independence? For many first-year students, going to college is a step toward independence. Families can help young students make decisions and will want to stay informed about activities offered at the school. Although privacy laws prohibit sharing grades and attendance records, many schools offer a variety of sources, such as a parent association, to keep families connected and supportive. Does the college offer co-curricular activities or athletics that interest you? Co-curricular activities and athletics expand students’ participation on campus. Ways to get involved include student government, residence life, activities and special interest organizations, campus ministry, intercollegiate competition, forensics and debate, Model United Nations, and academic pursuits such as honor societies, the college newspaper, literary magazine, band, choir or theatre productions. Consider the sporting events that you like to participate in or watch. Schools offer various levels of intercollegiate athletic competition; some may offer only intramural sports. Social, or “Greek,” fraternities and sororities are another way to meet others on campus. Colleges and universities often have special housing for their larger Greek organizations. Other fraternities or sororities focus on community service. Participation in service learning can strengthen your resume by offering opportunities to gain leadership, public speaking, budget management and planning experience.
