HOW TO...
Choose a Kitchen Designer
Is your older kitchen starting to bore or depress you? Maybe the silverware drawer just broke down again? An expanding family creating a need for an additional bathroom? Or maybe you are just tired of the dated look and want to bring your home up to date. With all the new appliances, kitchen designs, countertops and other technological advances in cabinets and counter tops, having an expert on your side will help a lot. Read on for some helpful tips on how choosing the right company for the job can make a huge difference in the final result and the years of enjoyment you receive from your investment. Many people will go through their whole lives and never design a kitchen because a quality kitchen lasts so long, and can be expensive and a challenge to replace without the right help. An experienced kitchen designer and installer can make inexpensive cabinets look great and be efficient to work in. But a poor plan installed without the care required can make the most expensive cabinets look cheap and hard to work in. We would like to help introduce you to the process of designing a kitchen, bath, home office, craft room or any other cabinet need to meet your dreams and your budget. Whether it is for a new home you plan to build, if you are remodeling an existing kitchen, adding an office space, bath or laundry room, you will want to work with an experienced kitchen designer as there are a vast array of choices and quality in all aspects of this kind of project.
CABINETS
Kitchen designers specialize in finding what your needs and desires are, and creating the most efficient and beautiful kitchen that meets those needs while staying within a budget. Kitchen designers are not distracted with other building materials as in the large home improvement centers and can stay focused on your desires in the design. Buying a new kitchen is not like picking up a new refrigerator, range or microwave. When done properly, they add serious value to the home, they can last a long time, and will rarely need replacing. Working with the right local business can make all the difference at the time of sale and for the years after. **Don’t remove anything until the replacements are on the way and you know about when they will arrive. With all the possible choices of woods, styles and colors, it can take weeks or months to get the kitchen you really want. We have had people come in to buy a kitchen after removing their old cabinets, and either they had to settle for a stocked cabinet instead of what they really wanted, or re-install enough of the old cabinets to get a working sink again. Stock cabinets rarely save much money, they have immediate availability as their main asset.
COUNTERTOPS
**Work with a Kitchen Designer for your best experience. Traditionally, people used to just go to a building center or lumberyard for their cabinetry needs, when kitchens were simple. The kitchen is now the heart of the home, and technology and new design techniques have changed how we can make kitchen a joy to spend time in. You should get the advice of a good kitchen designer so your kitchen can be a fun and efficient room to work in while being aesthetically pleasing and adding to the value of your home. Many times, a good design can save money, increase utility and be more pleasing to the eye over a design done by a less than competent designer. **Work with a reputable dealer so you get the support after the sale. A kitchen lasts a long time and is a large investment in your home. You will want to work with someone that will be here years from now if you want to add to your kitchen or get repairs made or replacement parts to keep it working and looking as it should. Kitchenland is a fourth generation family business that has had an A+ rating with the BBB for decades and been in the same location since 1925 when we started as a lumberyard.

HOW TO...
Choose an HVAC Company
Prolong the life of your HVAC system and prevent equipment failure by hiring a qualified professional to service and maintain it. When your heating or air conditioning system fails, it can be a nightmare. Whether it is a cold winter day or sweltering hot outside, the HVAC system in your home is important for your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Like any other product on the market, heating and cooling equipment differs in quality depending on the manufacturer. The top 4 manufacturers of HVAC equipment are Bryant, Carrier, Lennox, and Trane. Ask people in your social network whom they might recommend. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. Ask friends, neighbors, and co-workers for contractor referrals. You can also contact local trade organizations for names of members in your area. After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many complaints on their record. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about manufacturers, pricing, time to complete the job, guarantees, energy efficiency and warranties. The lowest price may not be the best deal if it’s not the most efficient because your energy costs will be higher, eventually costing you more money. A heating and cooling system is one of the largest purchases you’ll make as a homeowner. Keep your costs down by checking around for available rebates on energy-efficient ENERGY STAR qualified heating and cooling equipment. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result.
But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Also, sign a written proposal with a contractor before work gets started. It’ll protect you by specifying project costs, model numbers, job schedule and warranty information. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. Does the contractor carry replacement parts for the equipment they sell? Whether the part you need is under warranty or not, will you have to wait a week or more for parts? This is very important considering your system could have a problem in the middle of summer or winter. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come.
Make sure that the contractor you choose has full knowledge of the equipment they are installing. The best equipment, installed improperly, will never perform the way the manufacturer intended it to. In some cases, improperly installed heating and cooling systems will cost you more to operate than the system you are replacing. Before any work begins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office.

Legal Safeguards for Your Golden Years
Seniors who feel comfortable with their financial futures and health coverage are more likely to enjoy good health. When seniors retire, there are a wide variety of potential legal issues facing them. Medical expenses, nursing care, estate planning and wealth management are just some of the topics that seniors must keep in mind. It is great to have legal expertise in these areas to help guide you through some complicated matters. It is too important to risk doing on your own. Proper planning puts the power into their hands. It is a fantastic way to preserve their wealth in order to get lasting benefits for their families. MEDICARE BENEFITS Created in the mid-1960s, Medicare remains one of the several federal programs that exist to benefit seniors. It ensures that Americans over the age of 65 will have health coverage. Certain higher income seniors have increased premiums. People who are younger than 65 may also receive benefits under certain conditions. Hospitalization, prescription drugs, visits to the doctor and home nursing assistance expenses are covered by this program. Many of these younger Medicare beneficiaries are also eligible for Medicaid. An elder law attorney can help with careful planning. Buying a Medicare supplement policy when it is first available is necessary to avoid exclusions for preexisting conditions; Obama care did not end all preexisting condition exclusions. If you want to learn more about Medicare benefits, consult an elder law attorney. Qualified lawyers with
experience in this area can provide information about program eligibility. They can also tell seniors how to maximize their benefits. MEDICAID BENEFITS While many people confuse Medicaid and Medicare, the two programs are different. Medicaid offers medical coverage for younger and older low-income citizens. It also offers coverage for adults with disabilities. In Illinois a different Medicaid program offers coverage to adults with low income. Medicaid will help pay expenses of prescription drugs, home health care, doctor visits and more. Lawyers who specialize in elder law guide clients through the Medicaid application process. These attorneys will instruct clients about getting the maximum level of assistance possible. DISABILITY LEGAL ASSISTANCE Lawyers who specialize in disability issues inform clients about healthcare resources, financial assistance and even educational benefits. Most elder law attorneys also help these persons who have special needs. Consulting with a special needs attorney ensures that anyone suffering from a disability has access to available resources to help them fulfill their potential. VETERANS’ AID Eligible veterans have many benefits available for their use. Seniors who may be entitled to receive these benefits should always consult with an attorney to make sure they receive everything they are due. Attorneys specializing in veterans’ affairs have a
firm understanding of the different benefits and the procedures for claiming them. Spouses of veterans may also be eligible for certain benefits. An experienced lawyer can help them navigate the system. ASSET MANAGEMENT AND PROTECTION Wealth management strategy is one of the most critical aspects of estate planning. No senior should ignore it. Having a deliberate, tactical strategy is a strategic way to safeguard wealth for future generations. Failing to draft a thorough estate plan can be expensive. It can be devastating to decedents who may not have the financial resources to work through legalities. Estate planning lawyers will craft documents and review beneficiary designations that detail their client’s true intent regarding asset distribution. Wills and trusts are two common ways of smoothly transitioning assets from one family member to another. Very few people need strategies to minimize the estate tax liabilities that heirs may face. But skilled estate planning lawyers will offer creative solutions for protecting assets from the sometimes negative effects of the probate process. Getting proper and professional elder care and legal advice not only protects you and your loved ones; it also provides peace of mind.

Choose a Flooring Dealer
Is your floor looking worn and tired? No matter how much cleaning you do, does it still look dull? New flooring can give your home a whole new look. It can make rooms look bigger or smaller, lighter or more elegant. You can choose between carpet, hardwood, bamboo, laminate, stone and tile. With so many options, it is important to choose an experienced flooring dealer. You will need guidance on which brands and types are durable. Let a good dealer help you determine which flooring material will best fill your needs. When picking the best flooring and respective dealer, don’t be overly frugal. You must think about longevity. Your budget may be tight and you might be concerned about pricing, but you must get the best value possible. What if something happens in 10 years and you have no warranty to repair or replace the damange? Or if the installers make a mistake and leave your flooring perma-
nently damaged?
check with the Chamber of Commerce.
So be sure to look at additional support and services. Find a dealer who has a great reputation and long track record of excellent customer service. Spending extra money is worth purchasing a product from a flooring dealer you can trust. You aren’t just buying flooring. You are also creating a relationship.
After making a list of potential dealers you are considering, give each of them a call. Inquire about the background of the company and how long they’ve been in business. You may ask for referrals from previous customers for references.
When looking for a flooring dealer, look on the Internet or your local phone book. On the Internet, you can find review sites to see how local flooring dealers compare. You can also check advertisements in your local newspaper to find specials and deals. Keep in mind, though, the Internet can be misleading when it comes to finding a qualified floor dealer. Just because it is one of the top search engine results doesn’t mean that the company is reliable.
Find out about the installation services they use and their reliability. Do they use in-company groups or outside contractors? Also, find out about prices and warranty coverage. If you visit their offices, they might even show you a scrapbook of prior work. Experience should play a role in which company you ultimately select. Quality of materials, comparable or lower prices and good references will all make a big difference in finding the right flooring dealer.
Instead, look on consumer review sites. Then check with the Better Business Bureau to see if the company has had any complaints lodged against it. If so, look to see how they were resolved. You might also

Choose the Best Maternity Care
Choosing maternity care, especially if this is your first baby, is an exciting yet stressful time. Pregnancy is a huge milestone in a woman’s life. There are so many things to consider. One of the most essential decisions is choosing a maternity care provider. If your gynecologist is also an obstetrician, it means she can deliver babies and perform a C-section, if needed. It is likely you can continue seeing the same practitioner. But if you need to find a new maternity care provider, there are a few things to consider. Recommendations One of the most effective ways to find a good practitioner is to ask your family and friends who have been through the birthing process. Inquire about their experiences. Most people will have strong opinions about the quality of their care. In particular, seek out people who have had complicated pregnancies or births. Your primary care physician should also have recommendations for you. Compile the list of names and check your insurance to see if those doctors are covered by your policy. Office Visit
Sometimes doctors have a reputation for performing C-sections when they are not needed. Ask to see the doctor’s C-section rate. Midwives Of course, a doctor isn’t your only option for prenatal care. Many women are choosing to use a midwife. A midwife is specially trained in pregnancy and childbirth. These caregivers provide more personalized attention. Some women feel more comfortable with a midwife. If you prefer minimal medical intervention, a midwife can be a great choice. In some cases, you can even give birth at home. Just remember that a midwife is not a doctor. If your pregnancy or childbirth runs into complications, you will still need to go to a local hospital. Delivering the Baby Your maternity care provider needs to be available when it is time for you to give birth. Your chosen caregiver should have no vacations scheduled near your due date.
The Hospital Find out about the reputations of the maternity wings at your local hospital. Check to make sure the doctor you choose has credentials to deliver at the hospital of your choice. It is always best to choose a hospital with a good neonatal care unit in case your baby is born prematurely. Get a tour of facilities. While you are visiting, ask them which incidentals will be provided and which items you should pack in your hospital bag. You will need a comfortable robe, a change of clothes and other toiletries. Also, look at the postpartum recovery rooms. It may be a private or shared room. Make sure it fits your preference. Find out what the hospital’s policy is regarding having your newborn stay in the room with you. Looking at all of these aspects will help reduce your anxiety about giving birth. Giving birth is a thrilling yet tumultuous time in a woman’s life. Choosing a good maternity care provider will go a long way toward easing the process of having a baby.
Find out what happens if she is unavailable when Once you have narrowed your list of potential you go into labor. Choose a Zero-turn Mower
8 TIPS FOR MOWING IN LESS-THANIDEAL CONDITIONS
your blade tip, and that’s another fail-safe way to slow down your mowing.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all rain came during the night, and would result in dry grass every time you wanted to mow? Wouldn’t it be wonderful for mowing if every surface was completely flat and level? The truth is, the world isn’t flat, and sometimes we receive way too much rain (just like at the end of April). We can’t always mow in ideal conditions, so here are eight tips for using your mower when conditions are not at an optimum.
3) Round your turns. One of the advantages of a zero-turn mower is the square turn (stopping, pivoting and turning). On dry grass, that can really speed up your cutting. But any pivot motion on dry grass increases the chances of tearing up your grass. Take your corners in a round motion when grass is wet, and you will greatly reduce the damage to your lawn.
1) In wet weather, slow down. You wouldn’t drive as fast on an interstate highway when roads are slick as you would when roads are dry. It just makes sense to do the same thing on your lawn. When the ground is soft, it’s very easy to pull the grass out without much effort. Take your time and slow down your cutting. A zero-turn mower typically goes at speeds twice what a conventional riding mower can be propelled at, and that is especially hard on the grass beneath it. You’re cutting your grass, not setting a land speed record. Just remember that a little extra time means you are saving your yard! 2) Pull that throttle back. On wet grass, the easiest way to do this is to pull back on the throttle. You’ll want to set the throttle at no more than the ¾ position. This makes the hydros less responsive, and that means you are less likely to tear up your yard. It also decreases the speed of
4) Take time to master braking. Most zero-turn mowers are braked by moving both steering turn levers to the neutral position. When doing this on wet grass at high speeds, the chances of you damaging your yard increase. It’s also easier to brake at low speeds compared to high speeds, so practice braking if you must cut wet grass, and remember it’s not a race.
tions. If you are not sure if a hill is too steep, try backing straight up the hill. If you can’t back up the hill, it’s too steep to turn with a zero-turn mower. 7) Avoid sharp turns on hills. Sudden changes in direction on a hillside can be dangerous in the best of conditions, but especially so if the grass is wet. Sharp turns can result in skidding, and that could mean a very dangerous tumble down the hill. 8) If you don’t have to do it, don’t. If you can wait until the grass is dry, do it. If you absolutely must mow in wet conditions, following these tips can help keep you and your yard safe. Marine Mower and Saw has more tips for using your mower safely. For more info, visit www. marinemower.com.
5) Mow hills up and down. Moving across a hill on wet ground causes stress on grass which can cause it to be ripped out of the ground by the blade of a zero-turn mower. Mowing up and down a hill reduces that stress, resulting in a far better cut. 6) Over 15 degrees, leave it be. Zero-turn mowers are generally not designed to handle slopes of more than 15 degrees. If you are faced with a incline greater than 15 degrees, find an alternative to your zero-turn mower, even in dry condi-

HOW TO...
Choose the Right Landscaper
There is nothing like looking out the window to see beautifully maintained grass. Blooming flowers, rocks and moss will give your surroundings beauty and a feeling of warmth. A well-landscaped yard, cared for by a professional, will increase the value of your home and property. If you are in the market for a landscaper, consider these tips. Types of Landscapes There are usually five types of landscaped yards. Each requires the landscaper to have a different skill set. It is best to determine which landscape appeals to you before you begin your search for a quality professional. A formal garden uses many geometrical shapes in it’s design. Plants provide a focal point, making the yard appear balanced. To achieve this design, a landscaper will need to carefully prune hedges. An informal landscape looks like organized chaos. Plants appear to be placed randomly. Landscapers who use this design should be skilled at working with planters and urns. The English garden landscape uses the house as its focal point. All aspects of the yard will flow together. Professionals who use this design should be skilled at working with climbing vines, critical to this style. Oriental designs use rocks, mosses and evergreens. Calmness and quiet minimalism tend to be the effect of this style. To create a woodland design, the landscape must have great knowledge of native plants and making
them look their best. Set Your Budget Cost is always a concern when hiring a home improvement specialist. Set a budget and stick to it Understand what you can afford and are willing to spend annually on your landscaping. It will help you prioritize your list so you can at least get your necessities. You might need to make sacrifices. If you need a new landscaping wall, you might have to delay getting a sprinkler system. On the other hand, if irrigation is a must, then you might need to cut back on how often your lawn is mowed each month. Even if your budget is tight, don’t get discouraged. Some landscapers may charge less in order to get your business. Prioritize Your Needs Determining what you need will help you decide which services you require from a landscaping company. Most professionals offer the following: weekly or monthly lawn and garden maintenance, weed control, tree pruning and shaping, garden installations, inspection and maintenance of irrigation systems and possibly even the construction of retaining walls or other structures. Get Referrals
the company perform work. It will give you an idea about their employees and work habits even before contacting them. You could also do an online search for landscaping companies. Be sure to read reviews from prior customers. Keep in mind, though, not all bad reviews are necessarily true. Some past clients may harbor a grudge and could inflate the problem. Good reviews also need to be taken into consideration. Some companies have people post good reviews even if the person has never used their service. Also check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for more information. If any complaints have been lodged against the company, the BBB will inform you. Consider Availabilty Availability is another factor when looking for a landscaper. One of the first questions to ask is how often the company will be available for maintenance. If you want to be home while the landscaper is working, make sure you can coordinate your schedule. Also consider community regulations. For example, if your town has noise regulations, ask each landscape company what they will do to adhere to them. Once you find a landscaper that meets your needs, you can sit back and enjoy your bountiful reward.
Neighbors are sometimes the best way to get referrals. If you like what you see in their yard, ask them for their landscaper’s name. Discuss the pros and cons of the service as well. You can even watch

Nothing beats a great game of golf when played on the best of courses. Golf remains one of America’s most popular sports. Men, women and even children enjoy spending time on a golf course. The quiet, beautiful surroundings are a fantastic way to unwind and escape from daily life. If you are looking for a great golf course, you have many options. The ideal course should be difficult enough to challenge you. While going to the same handful of courses close to home is a good way to learn the basics, now is the time to grow your skill set. Most golf courses display their course layouts online. There is also a difficulty rating so you know what to expect. Look for a layout and rating that is very different from your usual fare. Care for Family Members with Autism or Disabilities
Find Tailored Services The first, and one of the most important things you should do, is to reach out for help. There is no shame in seeking help, and the advice and services you find will only be a benefit to you and your loved one. There are many services available to help you, and you should look for ones that are an ideal match for your loved one’s age and circumstances. For example, young children with autism may need early intervention, specialized childcare, social integration and programs that involve playtime — things that can make the therapy fun. Older children with autism will need different services such as help making their transition from school to work. Adults, on the other hand, will need their own tailored services to help them more fully participate in the community. The nature of your loved one’s disability will have a big impact on the type of support you need and the programs that are available. From in-home care to adult daycare and even building a better, stronger relationship with your doctor, you should seek out advice and research that fits your family’s needs. Look for Caregiver Support Because disabilities affect entire families, and can sometimes take a toll on your own personal health and energy level, you should look for programs that can help and support the caregivers, too. Communicating and participating with support groups and others who are going through the same thing as you are will not only offer comfort and support, you will likely find good advice and other ideas from others experiencing much the same as you. Being a caregiver, no matter what your situation, comes with certain stresses and responsibilities. Caregivers are often responsible for making decisions about planning for the future of loved ones and
how to best care for them. Choosing the right kind of care is one of the most difficult decisions you can make, so look for trusted resources that can walk you through the process and explain all the options that are available to you. And if you’re a caregiver, you should never forget to take care of yourself, too. If you devote some time to focus on your own needs, keeping yourself in good mental and physical shape, you’ll be better able to provide excellent care for the people around you. Hopeful, Positive Attitude While caring for people with autism or disabilities is undeniably difficult, many people also can experience tremendous joy by serving others and watching them grow and improve. That’s where a positive attitude comes in. No matter the nature of your loved one’s disability, every person should have the support that helps them lead a life full of hopes and dreams, successes and accomplishments. Children and adults with disabilities can still make tremendous contributions to society, but they need to be surrounded by the right community and find access to the right services and technologies that can make their life as rich and full as possible. A disability doesn’t mean there’s no hope. Finding the right kind of support and care group, as well as keeping and projecting a hopeful and positive attitude, will go a long way in improving you and your loved one’s life while instilling confidence and security. Why Choose We Rock the Spectrum? Traditional indoor play gyms and playgrounds do not meet the unique needs of children with disabilities, or even the needs of all typically developing kids. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and
other special needs often struggle with managing an over-stimulating environment, developing appropriate social interactions, and participating in structured classes that do not provide individualized attention and adaptations. Our specialized equipment, sensory-based toys, and fine motor/crafts area are designed to provide the tools needed for children with special needs to play and grow. In addition to the equipment, our programs offer an Open Play/ We Rock Care structure, and unique birthday parties, in an environment where ALL kids have a place to play, create, and use their imagination. The equipment and play structure are not all that set us apart from the other kid’s gyms. Our staff and philosophy also make the difference. We have a staff of highly dedicated and trained professionals who offer a single purpose to parents: continued efforts toward growth and improvement of the skills and talents of their children in a fun environment. This is accomplished by using our all-inclusive philosophy that allows all kids to play together regardless of ability level. We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for ALL KIDS, to foster learning, exploration, and safe-sensory experiences. We offer specific guidance and a mentoring program for parents with newly diagnosed children on the spectrum. Additionally, we offer parent support groups as well as parent advocacy nights. These forums are another wonderful resource for the newly diagnosed parent as well as the parent who has a history with the Autism community. These types of events enable your WRTS gym to gain exposure throughout your community while serving as a resource for families. Including speakers at these events is a wonderful way to help parents, as well as keep your franchise at the forefront of all specialists who participate.

HOW TO...
Choose a College or University
Choosing a college or university is an important, very personal decision that you should research extensively. Crucial selection criteria can help when sorting through admission catalogs and visiting websites or local college fairs. Prepare a list of five to seven schools, advises Dr. Joni Bastian, vice president for student affairs at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. “You may want to include both larger and smaller schools if you are unsure about the size of the campus you want to attend,” she says. Admission counselors—professionals who work for colleges and universities—will guide you through the decision process but before you apply, consider the following: Does the college offer quality academic programs? Colleges offer a wide variety of academic programs, from liberal arts to pre-professional. If your major is not listed but you are interested in other programs, you may have an opportunity to minor, pursue independent study or self-design a major.
offered to athletes or to students who have been exceptionally active in their schools or communities. Many independent scholarships can be researched and applied for online. Additionally, grants are available from the federal and state governments, and from the institutions themselves. The financial aid office can help you and your family understand the process for obtaining scholarships, grants and private aid. Be sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine what state and federal support is available based on your family’s or personal income. Will you live on campus? Living on campus is a great way to immerse yourself into the college community. It makes it easier to meet people and get involved. Research indicates that students who are engaged with their learning community are more likely to succeed in school Some schools require first and second-year students to live in campus housing; some do not allow them to have vehicles on campus; and others offer limited housing. Compare the cost of room and board to that of commuting from home or living in town.
How will you pay for tuition? Do you need special attention? Financial aid is available through grants, loans and a variety of scholarships. These are based on financial need or good grades and activities outside the classroom. For example, scholarships may be
A small student-to-faculty ratio offers more opportunity to participate actively in class, know your professors and receive personal attention. Many col-
leges and universities offer tutoring, special testing environments or academic support centers to help students succeed. If accessibility is an issue, inquire about ways to get around the campus. Where is the school located? Location is important not only for commuter students but also those who want to get involved in the community. It can also affect the availability of internships and employment opportunities. Internships are programs that give you an opportunity to work part-time in the field you are studying. As a student intern, you can gain valuable work experience and make connections in your chosen profession. Safety is also an important factor to consider when selecting a school. Be sure to ask what the college or university does to keep its students safe. Does the college offer co-curricular activities or athletics that interest you? Co-curricular activities and athletics expand students’ participation on campus. Ways to get involved include student government, residence life, activities and special interest organizations, campus ministry, intercollegiate athletics, forensics and debate, Model United Nations, social fraternities and sororities, and academic pursuits such as honor societies, the college newspaper, literary magazine, band, choir or theatre productions.
