Steve Davis bringing "Memories of Elvis" to the Wildey By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge "Well, it's one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go cat, go." Go, to the Wildey Theatre, that is. On June 25, Elvis impersonator Steve Davis will bring his "Memories of Elvis" show to Edwardsville. Presented by the Friends of the Wildey, the event will begin at 7 p.m. with an appearance by special guest Thomas Hickey appearing as Buddy Holly. Davis, who has been performing as Elvis for more than 33 years, will bring his version of the king's brand of rock and roll. Davis is a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University with a degree in theater education. He'll be joined at the Wildey by the Mid-South Revival Band. The event will have a Fourth of July feel to it, as well. “Steve Davis and the Mid-South Revival Band is a great combination for re-creating a patriotic themed Elvis Presley concert,” said Friends of the Wildey President Rich Walker. “This show will have everyone dancing and singing to their favorite Elvis hits. There will be a few StarBannered surprises thrown in too.” While he performs some 450 shows a year, Davis said the Wildey is among his favorites. "I love it," he said. It's got a wonderful energy." The setlist changes from show to show but Davis said fans can expect 90 minutes of music spanning Elvis' career with the setting of that being a Las Vegas performance. Davis is one of 68 living members of the Elvis Impersonators Hall of Fame. Davis describes his adventure with Elvis as a "college prank that backfired." He was invited to a party by one of his professors and had to dress as

a historical figure. "My friends in the dorm said I'd be an idiot not to choose Elvis," Davis said. A trip to the Salvation Army helped him outfit his costume and, when the party was over, he thought he was done. But he was just beginning. "I got a phone call from somebody whose mom was a fan and he wanted me to sing 'Happy Birthday' to her for $20," Davis said. That performance led to others and Davis was making a hundred or so dollars a week while in college appearing as Elvis. Tickets for this patriotic concert start at $20 for reserved seating and can be purchased online at www. wildeytheatre.com. The Wildey Theatre is located at 252 North Main Street in Downtown Edwardsville, Illinois. For more information about this event, contact the Wildey Theatre at 618307-1750. J.F. Electric is sponsoring this event. All proceeds from “Memories of Elvis” Salute to America will benefit the Wildey Theatre, a city-owned community performing arts theater in downtown Edwardsville.

MoBOT brings back Lantern Festival

The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to an international exhibition of 22 lighted works of art from Zigong, China when it debuts “Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined” in 2015. Following critical acclaim and rave reviews from visitors during the 2012 Festival, the Garden has commissioned new sets crafted from silk and steel to once again offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to see an event rarely staged outside of Asia. Lantern Festival will again be an outdoor, evening display running May 23 to August 23, 2015. “We were overwhelmed with the reaction our 2012 Lantern Festival received and for the last two years have heard from so many people asking if another festival would ever be held,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “At the same time, we have continued our botanical research in China, and feel it is fitting to highlight the growing number of botanical gardens in that country as we celebrate the continued contributions

6

the Missouri Botanical Garden makes in science on a global scale.” Lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture, dating back thousands of years. Today, lantern festivals traditionally mark the Chinese New Year, when complex and ornate lanterns fill cities. The 22 sets that will be seen during Lantern Festival 2015 will be constructed using traditional materials including silk, wire and porcelain. Each set will include interpretation detailing the design’s tradition, symbolism and meaning. Among the planned sets is “Soaring Dragon Horse,” located in the Garden’s Central Axis, depicting a well-known symbol in Chinese culture, the dragon horse. The dragon horse is considered a spirit of Heaven and Earth and thought to bring good fortune. “Porcelain Stupas Pagoda” will be constructed with more than 300,000 porcelain pieces including plates, bowls, spoons, teacups, ladles and wine cups. It serves as a replica of the Stupas Pagoda built in the Qing Dynasty in the Manfeilong Village of the Yunnan Province. In keeping with the Garden’s commitment to sustainability, “Giant Dandelion & Panda” will be constructed using recycled water bottles. Visitors will be able to take pictures with the largerthan-life flowers creating a cherished photo opportunity.

In addition to using recycled materials in several sets, the Garden plans to conduct a sale following the conclusion of the festival for St. Louisans to take home their own unique piece of Garden history. Ameren Missouri Pure Power will donate Missouri wind energy credits to offset the electricity required to power the exhibit. Lantern Festival tickets are on sale now. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to ensure they have the opportunity to see the exhibit on their preferred night. There is no additional charge to view the Lanterns during daytime hours, but special evening pricing begins at 6 p.m. on the nights the exhibit is open. Lanterns will not be lit during Whitaker Music Festival evenings. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway North and South exit. Free parking is available on site and two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer. For general information, visit www.mobot.org or call (314) 577‑5100 (toll-free, 1‑800‑642‑8842). Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi propaganda was much more complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015. “Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising,” says

exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people.” The exhibition reveals how shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. Admission to State of Deception is free. The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri History Museum seeks to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community; and facilitate solutions to common problems.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Entourage"

ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Like the HBO show, "Entourage" delights in Hollywood excess. This is a world where you might land your helicopter on someone's lawn to crash a business meeting, or take a little yacht to meet up with your buddy on his bigger yacht. It's a land of celebrities, wealth and topless women. This is the Hollywood where movie star Vince (Adrian Grenier) and his friends live; where what matters most is business and your bros. Fans of the series will feel right at home in the film, which plays like an extended episode on the big screen. All the familiar characters are there, along with ostentatious mansions, convertible Ferraris, Los Angeles landmarks and those topless women. It's a celebration of idealized consumption, presented without criticism. The film opens on a yacht off the coast of Ibiza, where Vince has retreated to mourn the end of his dayslong marriage. His lifelong friends — manager E (Kevin Connolly), driver Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and brother Johnny "Drama" (Kevin Dillon) — come to cheer him up. Just then, Vince's former agent, Ari (Jeremy Piven), now a studio head, calls to offer him the leading role in the company's next film. Surrounded by babes and with his buddies beside him, Vince says without irony: "This whole rushing-into-marriage thing is because I'm searching for something. I've decided that whatever I do next, I also want to direct." Ari goes for it, and thus begins their adventure. Ari's fight for financing with a pair of tough Texans (Billy Bob Thornton and Hayley Joel Osment) comprises much of the action on the business end. But that's not where the real action is, of course. It's with the guys (and the women they sleep with). Did I mention there are lots of naked, pretty girls in this movie? RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive language, strong sexual content, nudity and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Jurassic World"

Along the scaly spine of the Tyrannosaurus Rex runs the evolution of Hollywood blockbustering. Twenty-two years ago, Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" set the standard for the kind of movie the industry has, ever since, bred like test-tube dinos. Their genes are genetically modified for the requisite computer-generated effects, merchandising tie-ins and theme park-style attractions. While it's easy to lament the kind of films born out of Spielberg's box office record-setter, "Jurassic Park" was — and still is — a kind of pop perfection that has since been endlessly copied but rarely equaled. "Jurassic World," the latest incarnation of the franchise, is lacking the deft sense of wonderment, wit and suspense that guided the original. Director Colin Trevorrow, who ended his first and only other feature, "Safety Not Guaranteed," with a Spielbergian magical twist, has instead made a more biting thriller hung up on the corporate mandates of post-"Jurassic Park" Hollywood. What was once a charmingly hokey, if fatally misguided island resort off Costa Rica created by a wealthy, wide-eyed carnival showman has grown into a sprawling, monorailtraversed theme park worth billions. Jurassic World is a Dino Disney World, complete with long lines, bored teens and no shade to speak of. For better or worse, "Jurassic World" has done a very good job of recreating the theme park experience. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes.

"Madame Bovary"

What is it about Emma Bovary? She is, of course, one of literature's most famous and tragic heroines, and so it's no surprise that directors from Jean Renoir (1934) to Vincente Minnelli (1949) to Claude Chabrol (1991) have tried to immortalize Gustave Flaubert's frustrated, yearning 19th-century housewife on film. But the task has proven exceedingly difficult. Now, tantalizingly, we have a female director — Sophie Barthes — attempting to capture Emma's devastating story. Sad to say, Barthes' version doesn't break much ground. In fact, though it's often beautiful and stars the usually compelling Mia Wasikowska, the film is maddeningly flat, and at times simply tiresome. The curiosities of this version start at the very beginning. We see Emma running through the woods in a lovely embroidered dress, clutching at her stomach, clearly suffering. Soon she's lying on the ground, turning deadly pale. Barthes is, essentially, giving us the end before the start. It would have been more effective to get there gradually. We now need to put this image behind us, and focus on how Emma got to her moment of crisis. But the drama of the next 117 minutes never lives up to that of the first. After the opening, we go back to Emma's school years in a rural Normandy convent. Her education is ending, though; Emma is to be married to a country doctor chosen by her father. Barthes does a lovely job portraying a simple French country wedding, with a church ceremony and family meal in the garden. Soon Emma's off in a horse-drawn carriage to her new life. Charles Bovary (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) is a very decent but dull man, with few ambitions other than to serve the local townspeople. Emma dreams of something more. One of this film's main problems surfaces early: a strange disconnect in the way the actors sound. They speak in English, but in their own accents — French accents, British accents, American accents. Wasikowska, though she's Australian, sounds like she's in the modernday U.S here, and her very contemporary manner of speaking becomes increasingly jarring in this period piece. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some sexuality/nudity." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Inside Out"

"Inside Out," the latest Pixar punch to the heart, navigates the labyrinth of a young girl's mind in an antic, candy-colored romp through childhood memory to arrive, finally, gloriously, at epiphany. By now it's a familiar Pixar trajectory from wackadoodle to waterworks: We know it's coming and we know there's nothing we can do about it. The wave of tender nostalgia is going to crash down and wash us — happy, misty-eyed saps — out to sea, maybe with Nemo and Dora swimming alongside. Those moments, sentimental and sublime, come in unlikely places: the sudden understanding of a forgotten toy, the astonished realization of a bitter food critic, the flashback of a grouchy old man. The epiphanies are almost invariably about giving into the natural course of life and time: An acceptance, a letting go. Part of the magic is that even when out in space or in a rat-run restaurant, Pixar films stay earthbound. What's most striking about "Inside Out" isn't its inside-thebrain gee-whiz design, but that it's probably Pixar's most

directly human story yet: An 11-year-old girl, growing up. It's an event observed and subtly manipulated by a gaggle of voices in the head of young Riley: Joy (Amy Poehler), an effervescent, pixie-haired burst of positivity; Sadness (Phyllis Smith), a blue-tinged, bespectacled mope; Anger (Lewis Black), a red block of fury; Fear (Bill Hader), a perpetually nervous squiggle; and Disgust (Mindy Kaling), a snobbish socialite. From inside the "headquarters" of her head, the quintet have all watched Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) compile personalityforming memories, each of which rolls into headquarters like a glowing pinball, to be filed away accordingly in places like long-term memories or the more central "core memories." Things begin going haywire when Riley and her parents (Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan) move from Minnesota — the scene of her idyllic, hockey-playing youth — to a rundown San Francisco town house. Sadness begins creeping into her core memories, jeopardizing Joy's previously unchallenged sunny supremacy. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mild thematic elements and some action." RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out four.

"Infinitely Polar Bear"

In 1978, when writer-director Maya Forbes was 10 years old, her mother went away to graduate school, leaving Forbes and her little sister in the care of their mentally ill dad. The girls, and even their mom, didn't fully understand his diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Doctors still called it manic-depression in those days. Dad was unable to work, so while mom pursued studies that would improve the family's financial lot, he spent a year and a half raising their daughters in his own unconventional way. Forbes draws on her childhood for her directorial debut, "Infinitely Polar Bear," a quiet, personal film that plays as a cinematic love letter to her dad. It may be overly ambitious, aiming to make race and gender secondary themes while depicting the toll mental illness can take on a family, but succeeds with compelling performances and a deeply heartfelt story about the fatherdaughter bond. Cam Stuart (Mark Ruffalo) is crazy about his family, and also just a little crazy. He struggles with bipolar disorder, which his youngest daughter mistakenly calls "polar bear." Wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) still believes he's a capable parent, even after a mental breakdown lands him in the hospital. She leaves him in charge of their young daughters, hoping the daily routine of making meals and taking them to school will provide healthy structure to his life. The novelty wears off quickly for 10-year-old Amelia and 8-year-old Faith. They're embarrassed by their dad — he can be overly outgoing and oblivious when others are uncomfortable — and ashamed of their apartment, where clothes, clutter and his half-finished projects cover every surface. But there are upsides to Cam's ways. He helps his daughters make friends when he spontaneously rallies the neighborhood kids into a basketball game, and he stays up all night making an elaborate, last-minute costume for Faith's pageant. The girls begin to understand his fragility, and the caretaking becomes reciprocal. R AT E D : R f o r l a n g u a g e b y t h e M o t i o n P i c t u re Association of America. Limit your expectations for "Jurassic World" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I don’t think of myself as a film critic so much as I think of myself of someone who is critical about movies. Often, I’m torn between wanting to love a movie and also for best how to honestly represent its depiction and creation for you. It’s never easy. Would Jurassic World be the rockin’ vision of what every kid in 1993 wanted to see – real life working theme park with dinosaurs and funnel cakes and thrill rides all in close proximity? 12 year-old me would have given anything to experience that. Or would this movie just be more of the same? 34 year-old me is sad to say that it mostly was. That doesn’t make it terrible, just disappointing. Looking back at them now, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III

are pretty terrible sequels. They’re lame, hare-brained, and without the originality that Spielberg’s first movie brought with it. Citizens from San Diego are still probably trying to live it down. When they announced last year that Star-Lord Chris Pratt was going to headline World, I practically did a somersault imagining how good he’d be in it and how great the picture could be with him influence. That consideration obviously held sway with the general public as well. With $208.8 million dollars in ticket sales this weekend, Jurassic World set the new opening record and surprised many jaded “insiders”. Pratt stars as Owen Grady, a game warden who chiefly works with velociraptors and has essentially trained them to follow simple commands. He’s not the whisperer that you’d like to believe. He’s a

seen-it-all soldier and behavioralist that knows how to work responsibly with animals that want to kill you at all times…including humans (like Vincent D’Onofrio’s character). The disappointing part in Jurassic World is that nothing really unpredictable happens. We meet several inconsequential characters (like B.D. Wong, reprising his role as geneticist Henry Wu), extras gush at cool dinosaurs like the mosasaurs and the ankylosaurs, and then things fall apart. It’s soon chaos as the park’s newest project, a hybridized Indominus Rex, breaks out of containment and uses its super-dino skills to run amok ON AN ISLAND. With nowhere to run, Owen takes the lead that is soon followed by the park’s management figurehead (Bryce Dallas Howard) into restoring order to the theme park guests that are quickly being

eaten and gored. She also has to look for her lost nephews (Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins) and that part is a snore. The absurdity of this conundrum lands only ironically for all of the characters. For me, I was only into it for the humor (largely provided by Jake Johnson in a supporting role) and the cool factor. Things I would cool were the addition of water-based dinosaurs, real beasts, and the way Pratt found so many uses for that weird-shaped knife sheathed in the small of his back (I’m not the only one that thought that was fun!). The boys’ gyroscopic vehicle was neat and so was the celebrity cameo they got to voice its software. Pintsized triceratopses in the “pony rides” were hilarious and the battle between humans and pteradons on Restaurant Row was great. An IMAX movie theatre and Jimmy

Buffett’s Margaritaville got trashed in that process! Jurassic World is fine. It gives you want you want to see, but don’t put more expectations on it than you should. I read in the newspaper that scientists think we might actually be able to clone a real dinosaur within the next ten years. Re-engineering extinct species would be ultimate accomplishment of my lifetime would that prove true. And it still might be a bad idea folks. Dinosaurs and people clearly can’t survive and the sophomore efforts of director Colin Trevorrow and shown us that again. I bet that doesn’t stop us from trying in movies or life, though. Jurassic World runs 124 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of science-fiction violence and peril. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Obama thanks Catholics who supported health care law

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has thanked Catholics who helped convince Congress to pass his health care law. In a speech to the Catholic Health Association on Tuesday, Obama said "without your moral force, we would not have succeeded." The president was speaking to a friendly audience. The Catholic Health Association split with the U.S. Roman Catholic bishops to support the Obama administration in shaping a disputed compromise over the law's birth control coverage. Many Catholic institutions are fighting the contraceptive coverage mandate, and polls show the law remains unpopular with the public. But Obama maintained that even those who already had health insurance "may not know that they've got a better deal now than they did, but they do." The president said he and Catholics have "a shared belief

Gay pride ceremony features LGBT military officers, chaplain

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force chaplain says coming out as a lesbian hasn't impeded her ministry to troops. Col. Karis Graham took part in a panel Tuesday at the Pentagon's celebration of LGBT Pride Month, where Defense Secretary Ash Carter was the keynote speaker. Graham and other military officers, including Army Brig. Gen. Randy Taylor, introduced their same-sex spouses and described how difficult it had been for them to serve in the military before the lifting of the Don't Ask-Don't Tell policy. Graham said that once she could be open about being married to another woman without fear of being discharged, she was able to minister more effectively to other married troops, and has also been accepted by her fellow chaplains.

DETROIT (AP) — A memorial service planned by Aretha Franklin for her late father and brother has drawn hundreds of people to a Detroit church where they were ministers. The Detroit News reports the Sunday service featuring gospel music and a free soul food buffet packed New Bethel Baptist Church. Several people shared their memories of Franklin's father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, and her brother, the Rev. Cecil Franklin. Her father, who died in 1984, was also a civil rights activist, and her brother, who died in 1989, managed her career. Nearly two hours into the service in her hometown, the soul singer appeared on stage to perform the gospel tune "The Old Ship of Zion." Some in the audience cried. The newspaper reports Franklin's father would have turned 100 this year.

The Arts "From the Earth: Contemporary Ceramics" Edwardsville Arts Center set for next exhibit By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Often, the word “ceramics” brings forth ideas of functional work or decorative vessels, but it does not need to be confined to such. The next Edwardsville Arts Center exhibit, “From the Earth: Contemporary Ceramics,” will feature a variety of ceramic work, both falling under the umbrellas of functional pottery but also extending far into areas outside of the medium's stereotypes. “From the Earth: Contemporary Ceramics” opens June 26 with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Edwardsville Arts Center located at 6165 Center Grove Rd. in Edwardsville. The exhibit runs until July 31. Curated by Carmelita Nunez, “From the Earth: Contemporary Ceramics” will feature several artists with a variety of aesthetic approaches, giving both a totality to the world of ceramic work but also provoking new questions for the viewer. “This show is a reflection of the functionality of clay in its many forms,” Nunez said. “Clay is an ancient and permanent material that has served many different functional ends - plumbing, food vessels, storage, tiles, etc. “Function” takes on many different meanings when it comes to clay, even in our modern world - space shuttle tiles, medical devices, and bio-ceramics, electronics, etc. We all have ceramic items we use every day that help us through our lives. Please use your imagination

and discretion in engaging with functionality. Artists included in the exhibit will be Susan Bostwick, Tom Dykas, James Ibur, Kahlil Irving, Hannah Montford, Ruth Reese, and Yael Shomroni. Irving explained the process and theory behind his art pieces. “I began adding found and personal materials to clay to record the spaces that are residual to the process of firing and burning the materials away,” Irving wrote in his artist's statement. “The more I add to the clay more spaces are present.” “I also began replicating found objects from the street that are “throw aways,” Irving states. “In combination to the decay and burning away of materials to replicas from street create an interesting passage way to how objects and space can be contained within sculpture. I am interested in the juxtaposition between fragility and strength, stability and degradation, and networking, which are all present within the works I am developing.” Irving noted that the discovery of this process established a connection between the function of objects in reality and recreating recognizable trash into objects that can exist eternally in clay. “The work is a visual representation of decay that is no longer breaking down or developing, even though the work is complete and non-functional,” Irving said. Irving also notes that between the form and surface, there can

May 28, 2015

always be more discoveries. “I have discovered a new way to communicate in formal dialogue and surfaces to add more visual information,” he pointed out. “There is an endless source of information that can be created t h ro u g h t h i s c o m b i n a t i o n o f materials; paper, wood, cloth, plastic containers, and clay.” Yael explained that her work is wheel thrown stoneware that is altered, assembled, glazed with her own formulas, and then fired multiple times. “I strive to create functional objects that express my own artistic voice,” she said. “My emphasis, at the moment, has been liquor containers.” “ Ye a r s a g o w h i l e l i v i n g i n Jerusalem, I worked as a bartender in several charming, diverse, and inclusive bars,” Yael further explained. “It makes me sad that these sorts of places no longer exist. My liquor containers are a bit nostalgic for me and an homage to that brief moment when Israelis and Palestinians co-existed peacefully.” “From the Earth: Contemporary Ceramics” opens June 26 and runs through July 31. At the same time, the work of SIUE Student Bijan Mehmandoost will be featured in the DeToye Student Gallery.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

The combo beef and sausage sandwich, above, served on a freshly baked nine-inch hoagie bun at Joey's Place in Charleston. Below, mozzarella sticks served as a side at Joey's Place.

Joey's Place in Charleston By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge When visiting a college town it's a pretty safe bet you're going to find some good and cheap places to eat. There is a common theme for college kids, most of them like to eat and few of them have money, so local eateries keep that in mind when setting up shop. It's why places like La Bamba and Jimmy Johns found success starting near college campuses and have flourished and expanded since. On a recent trip to Charleston I discovered another cheap eatery with delicious treats for Eastern Illinois students — Joey's Place. Located at 850 Lincoln Ave. in Charleston, Joey's Place is a reminder of home for many of the Chicagoland students at EIU. It offers many of the classic amenities of the Windy City, like hot dogs, polish sausages, Italian sausages and Italian beef sandwiches to name a few, and best of all, it's light on the pocket book. On my visit I was torn on what to get off the delectable menu so I asked the advice of one of the college-aged guys working at the counter. He told me hands down I had to go with the combo beef and sausage sandwich, calling it his “go-to sandwich.” I obliged him by ordering it and headed to my seat to await my meal. Like many college-town eating establishments, Joey's Place isn't going to win any interior decorating awards anytime soon. It's an older building with booths equipped with high backs to separate patrons and provide a little privacy while eating. I don't want to run down the atmosphere

24

there, but I would categorize it as pretty plain. But in the end what's more important, the fanciness of the seating, or the food itself? I don't know about you, but for me it's definitely the food. Joey's Place could have had a monkey riding a unicycle and juggling hot dogs for entertainment, but if the food wasn't good I wouldn't return. When my food arrived the ambiance quickly became a nonfactor anyway and I can safely say I would return. My sausage and beef combo was served on a nine-inch loaf of

On the Edge of the Weekend

fresh bread, baked in-house. It was plump with sliced sausage, topped with beef and then drizzled in au jus. It was a pretty big sandwich. First of all, I would like to commend Joey's Place on their fresh bread, it did a sensational job of not immediately becoming soggy from the au jus, which can become a concern when eating a sandwich like this at other establishments. On top of that the bread had a stellar taste, too. As for the beef and sausage, they were delicious also. There was enough au jus to add a great influx of flavor, but it wasn't swimming

in sauce. The beef was tender and easy to eat and the sausage tossed in the bonus of spice needed to put it over the top. It was just a simple sandwich with a savory taste and one I would definitely eat again. I also went with a side order of mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce. The order came with five fat pieces of fried cheese and was very good. There wasn't anything really standout about these mozzarella sticks from any other I'd had before, but I'll applaud Joey's Place for cooking them to a perfect golden brown and for being tender and gooey in every bite.

It was an extremely good and filling meal and it was all done — including a drink — for $10. The sandwich itself was only $4.60. If you wanted to go real cheap, you can order a single hamburger for $2.05, or a honey-dipped corn dog for $2.50. Perusing the rest of the menu, there are plenty of affordable and mouthwatering choices. For one there's the Chicago dog with a steamed Vienna hot dog topped with mustard, sport pepper, pickle, onion, relish, tomato and celery salt. You can also get the double dog, the same thing with two dogs in the same bun, the cheese dog, the chili dog and the cheese and chili dog. All the hot dogs are served on fresh baked buns, too. The burgers look good also and all are charbroiled. Then there's the Italian beef sandwich, Joey's homemade chicken salad sandwich, a gyro, the meatball deluxe, a Philly cheesesteak and a chicken Philly, among others. Sides are limited. Besides the mozzarella sticks, Joey's Place has waffle fries, onion rings and either regular or barbecue potato chips. There is also one dessert item simply called original sin brownies. The menu describes them as “the best.” Unfortunately I was full and didn't put that moniker to the test by trying one. Another nice convenience from a college-town eatery is the availability and Joey's Place lives up to that. It's open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight and offers delivery to boot. Check out the website at www.originaljoeysplace. com. So if you're looking for convenience, good eats and cheap eats, then Joey's Place is a great spot to visit when you gotta eat.
