Since beginning his career with The Beatles in the 1960s, Ringo has been one of the world’s brightest musical luminaries. Music Tuning in The Fox to welcome Bob Weir
Bob Weir and Ratdog with very special guest The Chris Robinson Brotherhood will appear Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. Live at The Fox Theatre. Tickets are $99.50, $59.50, $49.50, $39.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. With a touring history that has made him one of the most traveled road musicians of all time and a restless music personality that has kept him occupied for over 50 years, Weir knows a thing or two about staying fresh and living in the moment. Although best known as one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, adding Dead staples such as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Cassidy” to the band’s catalog, Weir obtained a long and affluent music career that has allowed him to do what he loves and share it with others for nearly his entire life. In 1964, at the age of 17, Weir spent the majority of his time at a Palo Alto music store where Jerry Garcia taught guitar lessons. It wasn’t long before Weir and Garcia, along with Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, formed a blues and folk outfit. Originally called Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks—adding Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzman to the lineup—and eventually came to be known as the Grateful Dead. Throughout the late 1980s and during the first half of the 1990s, the Dead remained Weir’s primary gig. Touring incessantly while all the while building up a community of “Deadheads,” the band finally found commercial success with their 1987 album, In the Dark. When Garcia died in 1995, Weir had just recently formed RatDog with Rob Wasserman, a bassist he had been playing duo shows with since the late 1980s. After Garcia’s death, former Primus drummer Jay Lane and ex-Kingfish harmonica/guitar player Matthew Kelly were added into the mix. With a revolving lineup, the group toured relentlessly, building a name for themselves while performing a mix of new Weir compositions and older, reworked Dead songs. In 1998, Weir reunited with several former Dead bandmates to tour as The Other Ones, releasing a live album in 1999 and hitting the road again in 2000. The same year, RatDog released their first album, Evening Moods. In 2009, original Grateful Dead members Weir, Lesh, Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart teamed up with guitarist Wa r re n H a y n e s a n d R a t D o g keyboardist Chimenti to tour as the Dead. The results, however, were erratic, leaving Weir feeling like the road trip was more work than fun and Lesh saying the music didn’t seem to be moving forward. Besides stirring up some commotion, the ’09 Dead tour reminded Weir and Lesh of the chemistry the two had as bandmates. This led to the creation of Furthur—arguably one of the most successful Dead projects Weir has participated in to date.

Historic sites are scattered across the Missouri landscape By SCOTT McCULLOUGH For The Edge Historic sites are not measured by time and age, but rather by the events of historic significance that took place there. They expose you to a location where our country and our state were forever changed. Visit some spots where history actually happened. Renowned agricultural scientist, educator and humanitarian George Washington Carver (1864-1943) discovered more than 300 uses for the peanut, 70 uses for pecans, in excess of 110 from sweet potatoes, and hundreds of items using other agricultural crops. The George Wa s h i n g t o n C a r v e r N a t i o n a l Monument in Diamond, 16 miles southeast of Joplin, is his birthplace and childhood home. Facilities include a visitor center, a museum chronicling his life, a theater, an interactive discovery center, a gift shop and a nature trail. In the winter of 1838, Cherokee Indians were removed from their homelands to Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma), resulting in the deaths of approximately 4,000 Cherokees. The forced march, known as the Trail of Tears, crossed the Mississippi River and entered Missouri in an area preserved as Trail of Tears State Park, 11 miles north of Cape Girardeau. The visitor center features exhibits covering the march. The park offers camping, hiking and equestrian trails, a lake, fishing, a swimming beach, picnicking and an overlook of the Mississippi River.
In 1799, at the age of 65, iconic frontiersman Daniel Boone moved his family to an area of Spanish Louisiana that eventually became Missouri. The Historic Daniel Boone Home & Heritage Center, seven miles northwest of Defiance, holds the home Daniel built for his
youngest son, Nathan. Daniel spent most of his time in his son’s home; a massive four-story structure, with limestone walls two-and-a-half feet thick, built to provide protection in case of an Indian attack. Daniel Boone passed away in the home in 1820. The site includes a village
made up of more than a dozen relocated 19th century buildings, including a general store, school house, grist mill, carpenter shop and the Old Peace Chapel. Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) was a world-renowned American painter and muralist who painted

scenes of the American South and the American West. Two of his most famous murals can be seen in the House Lounge inside the state Capitol and in the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence. In 1977, Benton's late-Victorian residence and carriage house studio in Kansas City was designated the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site; it has been preserved nearly unchanged from the time of his death. A blank canvas, paintbrushes and paints remain in the studio just as he left them. The main house and the studio contain many of his belongings, along with 13 original works of his art. Founded in 1857, the population of Sedalia reached 15,000 by 1900, making it the fifth-largest city in the state. When the railway reached the town in 1861, Sedalia became the primary railhead for the massive Texas cattle drives. The Katy Depot and Railroad Heritage Museum chronicles the heydays of railroads, cattle drives and prosperity. During 1866 alone, more than 260,000 head reached the Sedalia stockyards, to be carried eastward by the MissouriKansas & Texas Railroad (the KATY), continuing through much of the 19th century. In addition to the museum, the Katy Depot serves as one of many trailheads for the Katy Trail State Park; at more than 237 miles it is the longest rails-to-trails conversion in the United States. The Depot’s facilities include a visitor center (yes, they have snacks) that has bicycle rentals, sales, and service.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"The Fault in Our Stars"
Let's start with the obvious. For its core audience, "The Fault in Our Stars" is essentially critic-proof. If you're a fan of the wildly popular young-adult book by John Green, and have already shed tears at its story of teenage cancer patients learning about life, love and sex as they fight to stay alive, then you'll be a fan of this movie. Slam dunk. Go buy your ticket. But of course, you probably already have. The situation becomes more nuanced, though, for those who haven't read the book. Both author and fans have pronounced the movie, directed by Josh Boone, extremely faithful to the novel, but does that make for the optimal cinematic experience? Many films have failed, after all, for adhering too strictly to the written page. Happily, we can report that "The Fault in Our Stars" is, despite the occasional misstep in tone, largely a solid success — a film that not only manages the transition from page to screen nicely, but also navigates with skill that hugely tricky line between the touching and the trite, the moving and the maudlin. And that latter task ain't easy. But there's one major reason that the movie succeeds in this regard. Her name is Shailene Woodley. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for thematic elements, some sexuality and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 125 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Edge of Tomorrow"
The time-shifting sci-fi thriller "Edge of Tomorrow" has perfectly encapsulated what it is to be a summertime moviegoer. We're dropped into a battlefield of digital effects with the fate of the world at stake. Torrents of gunfire and explosions surround. Some alien clonks us over the head. We black out and it all happens again. And again. "Edge of Tomorrow," in which Tom Cruise plays an officer who continually relives a day of combat against extraterrestrials, probably isn't a commentary on the repetitiveness of today's blockbusters. Its star, after all, has been the unchanging, unstoppable avatar of big summer movies. But in the film directed by Doug Liman ("Swingers," ''The Bourne Identity"), the action-star persona of Cruise is put into a phantasmagorical blender. As military marketer Maj. William Cage, he's thrown into battle against his will by an unsympathetic general (the excellent Brendan Gleeson), and then finds himself stuck in a mysterious time loop. Cruise dies dozens of times over and over, often in comical ways. Does this sound like a great movie, or what? The selling point of "Edge of Tomorrow" may indeed be seeing one of Hollywood's most divisive icons reduced to Wile E. Coyote. He's like a real-life version of the video game "Contra," with the code of seemingly endless life. Dying again and again, Cruise has rarely been so likable. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and brief suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"22 Jump Street"
Things are always worse the second time around, the deputy police chief warns the buddy-cop team of Jenko and Schmidt in "22 Jump Street."

On the Edge of the Weekend
He's talking about their next assignment, but of course, it's an inside joke — with the audience. "22 Jump Street," starring the inspired comic duo of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, is a sequel, and movie sequels are indeed often worse (especially when, as the chief also points out, the budget's bigger the second time around.) Self-referential jokes aside, things aren't worse the second time around for Hill, Tatum and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It's fine to make fun of sequels — and this movie does, all the way to a fabulous ending-credits bit that steals the film — when you know you've made a pretty darned good one yourself. Not that this film is perfect — some jokes go too far, or too long, or both, and one running gag involving prison sex is gratuitous, ill-advised, unfunny, and, well, we'd say more but three adjectives are enough. Many more jokes, though — spoken and visual — succeed beautifully. And the cast? It's a pretty heavenly group, anchored of course by Hill and Tatum, who have a Laurel-and-Hardy-like implausible chemistry that keeps you laughing pretty much no matter what they're doing. If you never saw "21 Jump Street," no worries — the filmmakers bring you up to speed fast. The last film saw Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) go undercover to high school. This time, it's college they're ordered to infiltrate, to thwart a nasty drug ring. ("I'm the first person in my family to pretend to go to college," Jenko says proudly.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language throughout, sexual content, drug material, brief nudity and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"How to Train Your Dragon 2"
You thought it was tricky to train a dragon? It's even trickier to take a much-admired animated film and make a sequel that feels satisfying and worthwhile. And it's harder still to balance the competing needs of stretching the story in new directions but retaining the guiding spirit of the original enough to make fans happy. It's nice to be able to report that "How to Train Your Dragon 2," written and directed by Dean DeBlois, does all that tricky stuff pretty darned well. And you'll be happily surprised at the new twists it takes — sort of like getting an unexpected second candy bar in the vending machine. "How to Train Your Dragon 2" doesn't play it safe, and that's why it's the rare sequel that doesn't feel somewhat stale. The story returns us to Berk, where our young Viking hero, Hiccup (again voiced by Jay Baruchel), lives and frolics with his devoted dragon, Toothless, whom he befriended in the first movie, with momentous ramifications for human-dragon relations. Five years have passed, and now Berk is a virtual playground for dragons and Vikings alike. Hiccup's restless nature, though, is at odds with the aspirations of his burly father, Stoick the Vast (a sweetly gruff Gerard Butler), who wants Hiccup to take up new responsibilities. But Hiccup doesn't feel leadership is really his thing. That's what he tells spunky Astrid (America Ferrera, back from the first film), who is now his girlfriend, as well as a fellow explorer. (Other famous returning voices are Jonah Hill as Snotlout and Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut.) RATEDE: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for adventure action and some mild rude humor." RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Jersey Boys"
You don't have to be middle-aged, or even an adult, to know songs like "Sherry," ''Big Girls Don't Cry," and "Walk Like a Man." Sure, they're '60s-era hits by The Four Seasons, but they've become such pop culture fixtures that even youngsters who've never heard the name Frankie Valli could surely croon a few bars in his signature falsetto. It's little wonder that the stage musical "Jersey Boys" has become one of the most successful shows in Broadway history on the strength of those sublimely catchy tunes. And it's also little wonder that the prospect of bringing the show to the screen appealed to Clint Eastwood, who at 84 is still, blessedly, up for challenges. What's rather curious, though, is that with all the talent involved — not only Eastwood as director, but an excellent cast plucked from "Jersey Boys" stage regulars — the film is distinctly uneven, hugely appealing at times and oddly pedestrian, even cheesy, at others. One problem may be that "Jersey Boys" tries to do a few things at once. On one level, it's a fairly faithful re-creation of the Broadway show; the same writers, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, penned the screenplay, and the excellent John Lloyd Young reprises his Tony-winning performance as Valli. But it also aims to be an edgier film exploring the band's entanglements with the mob back in Jersey — a sort of "Goodfellas" to pop music. The goals don't always mix. The dialogue, too, sometimes sounds overly, well, stagey. And a key convention of the show — band members breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly — is used unevenly, abandoned for long stretches and suddenly popping up when it doesn't feel needed. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language throughout." RUNNING TIME: 134 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Venus in Fur"
Roman Polanski. Sadomasochism. What could possible go wrong? The combination of director and subject material in "Venus in Fur" is wickedly perverse, just as it should be. Polanski and David Ives' award-winning play are a match made if not in heaven, then surely in some demon's dungeon. The play was a Broadway hit, led by a star-making, Tonywinning performance by Nina Arianda. Here French actress Emmanuelle Seigner takes over the role of Vanda, a tardy, gum-smacking actress who arrives on a stormy night for an audition with a director (Mathieu Amalric) at a Paris theater for a production called "Venus in Fur." That is just the start of the hall of mirrors. "Venus in Fur" is a movie-within-a-play based on a play-within-a-play, which itself is based on a novel-within-a-novel. The origin is Austrian author Leopold von SacherMasoch's semi-autobiographical 1870 novella "Venus in Furs," about a man who craves to be dominated by his love, Vanda. ("Masochist" derives from the author's name.) Ives' play is about an arrogant playwright adapting the novel for the stage. Polanski had stayed largely faithful to the play, but has translated it to French, substituted his wife (Seigner) for Vanda, cast Amalric as a younger doppelganger for himself and added a terrific, carnival-esque score by Alexander Desplat. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some bloody violence." RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

show — band members breaking the fourth wall to address the audience directly — is used unevenly, abandoned for long stretches and suddenly popping up when it doesn't feel needed. We begin as Frankie Castelluccio, a sweetfaced boy of 16 (Young, at 38, somehow pulls this off) is trying to break through as a singer while training at a barbershop. Luckily, he's supported by music-loving mob boss Gyp DeCarlo (Christopher Walken, in a sure-bet role here) and loyal buddy Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza), who can't stay out of trouble himself, but through sheer grit launches the band that will become The Four Seasons. The two, plus bassist Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda) are struggling for attention when aspiring agent Joey Pesci (yes, that Joe Pesci) introduces them to songwriter Bob Gaudio
(Erich Bergen.) Gaudio's talent is just what they need. It takes a full hour to get to a big musical number, and boy, it's a welcome relief to hear the boys sing "Sherry," their first number-one hit. Other hits follow — and all kinds of trouble. The movie, best when it lets us simply enjoy these lovely harmonies and Young's terrific falsetto stylings, soon veers back into band infighting. Tommy, we learn, has landed the boys in serious financial straits. Heartache ensues. And what about the women, you ask? Alas, they begin on the sidelines, and stay there. As Mary, Frankie's wife, Renee Marino is sexy and smart in the beginning, but turns into a total caricature of a drunken shrew by mid-movie. Speaking of caricatures, Frankie's

As Vanda arrives, the director, Thomas, is on the phone complaining in misogynistic frustration that after a day of auditions, he can't find a woman with both intellect and sex appeal. The impolite Vanda, clad in black leather with a dog collar around her neck, initially seems no different. But after she rebuffs Thomas' attempts to dismiss her, Vanda slyly begins to reveal her great, commanding talent. Though she initially acts unfamiliar with the story ("It's basically S&M, right?" s he s ays ), Vanda re v e als he r mastery of the text, the role and, eventually, men like Thomas. Soon, she's fixing the lights on the stage (decorated for a musical adaptation of "Stagecoach," with a giant cactus center stage),
pulling period props from her bag and eventually has the tables completely turned on Thomas. The role reversal takes on mythical grandeur. S e i g n e r, p e r h a p s m o r e appropriately older than Arianda, is a powerhouse as the increasingly domineering Vanda. But it often feels that the offstage director — the 80 year-old Polanski — is having the most fun, commenting on the director-actress relationship and his own helplessness before such goddesses. This is the second chamber piece in a row for Polanski, long a master of terror in confined spaces. "Venus" follows 2011's "Carnage," from the Tony-winning "God of Carnage," also about a breakdown of roles in a single setting (two pair s of paren ts debating an

incident between their young boys). Such stage-to-screen endeavors almost always suffer from claustrophobia, and one can't help wondering if they somehow reflect Polanski's own restriction of movement. (His fine 2010 thriller "The Ghost Writer," too, dealt with a character practically imprisoned on a remote island.) While "Venus in Fur," shot in widescreen, breathes better than "Carnage," one of the film's most exciting moments is its very first. While Desplat's score kicks off, the camera drifts down a rainy Paris boulevard before turning into the theater, the doors opening before it. It's the arrival of Vanda, like a conjured apparition. It's also a reminder of the live danger of Polanski's camera when on the prowl.

Religion Religion briefs Obama extension of gay rights may not include religious exemption
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama plans to sign an executive order banning federal contractors from discriminating against employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity, but it's unclear if there will be a religious exemption. Obama hoped that Congress would pass a broader non-discrimination measure that would apply to nearly all employers. Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch called on the White House to include the same religious exemptions in the executive order that are included in legislation the Senate passed but which is stalled in the House. The bill includes exemptions for churches and other houses of worship, as well as religiously affiliated organizations. Nathan Diament, Executive Director for Public Policy for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, says if there's no religious exemption, some Christian

Arizona break-in highlights gun-possessing clergy
Mormon church agency leaving adoption business
PHOENIX (AP) — A deadly burglary at an Arizona church is raising questions about the wisdom of clergy possessing weapons, no matter how dangerous their mission. Authorities say a Roman Catholic priest responding to a break-in last week at his downtown Phoenix church grabbed a handgun that ended up in the burglar's hands — and was then used to kill a fellow priest who tried to help. Many American Catholic leaders have argued that church teaching compels them to advocate for greater limits on guns, but selfdefense is also part of Catholic theology, and Catholics have different views of the issue. Concern about security at churches has grown in the last decade or so in the wake of several high-profile shootings.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The social services arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says it will no longer operate a full-service Mormon adoption agency, but will shift resources toward adoption-related counseling. Officials with LDS Family Services made the announcement Tuesday, saying the change will provide would-be parents with more opportunities to adopt. David McConkie, who manages the organization's services for children, tells The Salt Lake Tribune that the traditional adoption agency model wasn't working for LDS Family Services. He said fewer women are putting their children up for adoption these days, likely because the stigma of being an unwed mother has subsided. Family Services has been placing 200 to 300 children per year, down from a peak of 665 in
2002. Officials tell KSL that the decision isn't driven by pressure to facilitate adoptions for same-sex couples.
Kenya president blames locals for deadly attacks
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The killers in the Kenyan village singled out non-Muslims Monday night, shooting them point-blank or slitting their throats, just like the previous night in an adjacent hamlet. A Somali extremist group claimed responsibility but Kenya's president on Tuesday blamed local political networks for the 60 deaths. President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a national address, said al-Shabab, a Somali group linked to al-Qaida, was not behind the attacks. But other Kenyan leaders said the second night of deadly attacks against a Christian community on Kenya's north coast seemed designed to try to inflame religious tensions, and al-Shabab said such attacks will continue in retaliation for what it considers Kenya's oppression of innocent Muslims.

CAM offers free summer admission
The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) is excited to announce free admission to the Museum for the summer exhibition season, today through August 10, compliments of the Gateway Foundation. Building on previous initiatives to make the Museum more accessible—including evening hours on Thursdays and Fridays and a wide variety of free and lowcost programs—free admission fulfills the Museum’s longtime goal of being able to open its doors to the entire community. This summer CAM celebrates St. Louis’s vibrant arts scene with the 2014 Great Rivers Biennial, featuring the work of three St. Louis-based artists and sponsored by the Gateway Foundation. Free admission is timed to coincide with this special exhibition, bringing transformational experiences with art to an even broader audience. “We are thrilled to be working with the Gateway Foundation to present both free admission and the Great Rivers Biennial,” said CAM Executive Director Lisa Melandri. “We invite the public to experience art at CAM all summer long—come see us any time, often, on us!” The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is located at 3750 Washington Blvd in St. Louis. from the press, the public, and fellow comedians: “He is one of my favorite, favorite stand-up comedians.” Jerry Seinfeld “Honestly, Brian Regan’s the best stand-up working today. Period.” – Patton Oswalt “You’re the guy people look up to…Brian Regan’s the funniest guy…there’s Brian Regan and then there’s other people.” – Marc Maron “I’ll take all of that guy you got…Very funny man.” – David Letterman Wi t h h i s f i r s t a p p e a r a n c e on The Late Show with David Letterman in 1995, Regan solidified his place on the show and recently made his 26th appearance, the most of any comedian on the CBS show. Regan’s non-stop theater tour visits close to 100 cities each year since 2005, and continues through 2014. Last August, Regan sold out the legendary, 8600-seat Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver, and in February 2014, Regan performed two soldout shows at the 12,500-seat EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City. Occasionally venturing off the stand-up stage, Regan recently appeared in Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. He will also be seen in the upcoming Chris Rock movie Finally Famous, and he voiced the character of Weib Lunk for the 40th episode of The Looney Tunes Show titled, Spread Those Wings and Fly. Recently, Regan was nominated for a 2014 American Comedy Award for Best Concert Comic. For more on Brian visit www. BrianRegan.com and follow Brian on Twitter - @BrianReganComic
