Missouri History Museum to exhibit Nazi Propaganda The Nazi Party developed a sophisticated propaganda machine that deftly spread lies about its political opponents, Jews, and the need to justify war. But Nazi p ro p a g a n d a w a s m u c h m o re complex than that. For the Nazis to achieve power and pursue their racial policies and expansionist war efforts, a much more nuanced picture had to be painted—one that would appeal to broad swaths of the population, not just a fanatical extreme. Featuring rarely seen artifacts, State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda draws visitors into a rich multimedia environment vividly illustrating the insidious allure of much of Nazi propaganda. The exhibition opens at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on April 11, 2015 and will be on display through September 7, 2015.

community.” As Germany pushed the world i n t o w a r, N a z i p r o p a g a n d a rationalized Germany’s territorial expansion as self-defense. Jews were depicted as agents of disease and corruption. The Nazis’ actions against them, in Germany and occupied countries, were promoted as necessary measures to protect the population at large. Admission to State of Deception is free. The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri History Museum seeks to deepen the understanding of past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community; and facilitate solutions to common problems. Due to its innovative approach to public service, the Missouri History Museum was the first recipient of the Institute of Museum and Library Services N a t i o n a l Aw a rd f o r M u s e u m Services in 1994. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traveling exhibitions; tours; theatrical and musical presentations; programs for school classes and youth groups; family festivals; special events; workshops; and lectures.

“Adolf Hitler was an avid student of propaganda and borrowed techniques from the Allies in World War I, his Socialist and Communist rivals, the Italian Fascist Party, as well as modern advertising,” says exhibition curator Steven Luckert. “Drawing upon these models, he successfully marketed the Nazi Party, its ideology, and himself to the German people.” The exhibition reveals how shortly after World War I, the Nazi Party began to transform itself from an obscure, extremist group into the largest political party in democratic Germany. Hitler early on recognized how propaganda, combined with the use of terror, could help his radical party gain mass support and votes. He personally adapted the ancient symbol of the swastika and the emotive colors of red, black, and white to create the movement’s flag. In doing so, Hitler established a potent visual identity that has branded the Nazi Party ever since. After seizing power, the Nazi Party took over all communications in Germany. It marshaled the state’s resources to consolidate power and relentlessly promote its vision of a “racially pure,” utopian Germany that needed to defend itself from those who would destroy it. People People planner MoBOT brings back Lantern Festival

The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to an international exhibition of 22 lighted works of art from Zigong, China when it debuts “Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined” in 2015. Following critical acclaim and rave reviews from visitors during the 2012 Festival, the Garden has commissioned new sets crafted from silk and steel to once again offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to see an event rarely staged outside of Asia. Lantern Festival will again be an outdoor, evening display running May 23 to August 23, 2015. “We were overwhelmed with the reaction our 2012 Lantern Festival received and for the last two years have heard from so many people asking if another festival would ever be held,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “At the same time, we have continued our botanical research in China, and feel it is fitting to highlight the growing number of botanical gardens in that country as we celebrate the continued contributions the Missouri Botanical Garden makes in science on a global scale.” Lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture, dating back thousands of years. Today, lantern festivals traditionally mark the Chinese New Year, when complex and ornate lanterns fill cities. The 22 sets that will be seen during Lantern Festival 2015 will be constructed using traditional materials including silk, wire and porcelain. Each set will include interpretation detailing the design’s tradition, symbolism and meaning. Among the planned sets is “Soaring Dragon Horse,” located in the Garden’s Central Axis, depicting a well-known symbol in Chinese culture, the dragon horse. The dragon horse is considered a spirit of Heaven and Earth and thought to bring good fortune. “Porcelain Stupas Pagoda” will be constructed with more than 300,000 porcelain pieces including plates, bowls, spoons, teacups, ladles and wine cups. It serves as a replica of the Stupas Pagoda built in the Qing Dynasty in the Manfeilong Village of the Yunnan Province. In keeping with the Garden’s commitment to sustainability, “Giant Dandelion & Panda” will be constructed using recycled water bottles. Visitors will be able to take pictures with the larger-than-life flowers creating a cherished photo opportunity. In addition to using recycled materials in several sets, the Garden plans to conduct a sale following the conclusion of the festival for St. Louisans to take home their own unique piece of Garden history. Ameren Missouri Pure Power will donate Missouri wind energy credits to offset the electricity required to power the exhibit. Lantern Festival tickets are on sale now. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to ensure they have the opportunity to see the exhibit on their preferred night. There is no additional charge to view the Lanterns during daytime hours, but special evening pricing begins at 6 p.m. on the nights the exhibit is open. Lanterns will not be lit during Whitaker Music Festival evenings. The Missouri Botanical Garden is

Hillsboro plans Summer Concert Series

The Hillsboro 2000 & Beyond committee is excited to announce the lineup for the 6th Annual Summer Concert Series sponsored by Roger Jennings, Consolidated

Communications and Patton Mining. The series is held in Sherwood Forest Campgrounds on the bluegrass stage located at 920 City Lake Road in Hillsboro, IL June through August. The lineup has been secured and the committee is bringing top-notch regional talent to the area. This summer ’s series is expected to be the biggest yet as the talent has played to sell out crowds in major cities and music festivals. August 7 – Bones Jugs N Harmony (Eclectic) Urbana, IL Bonesjugs.com It’s not world music nor folk music. It’s not rock, blues, bluegrass, country nor jazz. It’s not anything in particular. Bones, jug, xylophone, kazoos, steel pan, resonator guitar, banjo, double bass, drums, all sorts of noise makers. These are just some of the instruments Bones Jugs N Harmony use to conjure up their eclectic acoustic sound. It’s Frank Zappa meets Spike Jones, it’s Looney Tunes meets Nintendo. It’s seriously silly. It’s a party. It’s for dancing, for listening, for enjoying. It’s for adults. It’s for kids. It’s for everyone. Bones Jugs N Harmony believes music should bring joy, and they work hard to put this in every song. From the first note till the end they strive to send their joyful sound into the ears where it will quickly saturate the entire body. It’s a frenzy of frivolity, a marvel

of merriment. In short, it’s just loads of fun. This concert series is created not only for the community but by the community working together. Top-quality celebrations and events like these would not be possible without the involvement of a dedicated corporate community. The series is sponsored by Roger Jennings, Consolidated Communications, Patton Mining, Casey’s General Stores, CNB Bank & Trust, Hayes Abrasives, Springfield Clinic, The Journal-News, TCCU, Lincoln Land Community College, Refreshment Services Pepsi and Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce. Any money raised during the series will be used for Hillsboro beautification improvement projects. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Ted 2"

"Ted 2" asks a question that we never needed, or particularly wanted, to know the answer to: Is Ted, the magical, foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear, a person in the eyes of the law? While it's unfair to judge a comedy simply for a ridiculous premise, here, it also happens to be the unlikely killer of the overstuffed "Ted 2." And resolution does not come quickly enough in this nearly two-hour rumination on civil rights and abject stupidity. P a r t o f t h e c h a r m o f " Te d , " w r i t e r- d i re c t o r S e t h MacFarlane's better-than-it-should-have-been story of a grown man and his sentient stuffed animal, was how unaffectedly it treated its talking teddy. Ted just is. No one thinks too hard about the why of it. Combining that silly foundation with Mark Wahlberg's endearingly dopey intensity was a stroke of brilliance. The movie was allowed to only be about their friendship, and it worked. Making a sequel to an original comedy is always a tough game, though. More often than not, the desire to please fans and recreate the magic of the first produces nothing more than an exaggerated rehash. I n a n a d m i r a b l e e ff o r t t o g o a d i ff e re n t ro u t e , MacFarlane has instead done something hopelessly bizarre: He's given his film too much sincerity and story, and it practically crushes whatever fun does exist. This time, we meet up with Ted (voiced again by MacFarlane) at his wedding to fellow grocery store clerk and gum-smacking bombshell Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth). Their newlywed bliss soon curdles and they decide to have a baby to save the marriage. R AT E D : R b y t h e M o t i o n P i c t u r e A s s o c i a t i o n of America for "crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use." RUNNINT TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"The Little Death"

I come to praise the portmanteau. Anthologies, omnibuses, whatever you want to call them: Those cinematic conglomerations of disconnected or slightly interwoven stories are what I'm talking about. As a storytelling tradition, it stretches back beyond "The Canterbury Tales," and runs through "Pulp Fiction." The latest is "The Little Death," an Australian series of sex fetish fables. The portmanteau is often good fun because it's happily free of conventional structure. Many great directors have tried their hand in them, from Francis Ford Coppola ("New York Stories") to Robert Altman ("Short Cuts," ''Nashville"), and Roberto Rossellini ("L'Amore") to Eric Rohmer ("Six in Paris"). When portmanteaus work, they have an internal rhythm of their own, like the time zone-skipping clocks of Jim Jarmusch's "Night on Earth." Hopscotching from tale to tale, they can feel like dreams (Powell and Pressburger's mesmerizing "Tales of Hoffman") or mimic day-dreamed nightmares (Preston Sturges' hysterical "Unfaithfully Yours"). In others, the poetic brevity of their tales (Wayne Wong and Paul Auster's "Smoke") take on the feeling of a good short story collection. Lately, anthologies have seemingly grown in popularity on all kinds of screens, including TV's "True Detective" and "Black Mirror," and the Argentinian, Oscar-nominated movie of extreme revenge vignettes, "Wild Tales." The current appeal probably owes something to our digitally scrambled minds; author Alissa Quart dubbed multi-linear movies "hyperlink cinema." RATED: nrated by the MPAA. The film's language, violence and sex would likely merit an R-rating.

On the Edge of the Weekend

RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Max"

It's officially summer. What better time for a heartwarming caper movie about a troubled but noble Texas teen, his troubled but noble dog, and those crazy mean gun smugglers they tangle with? Yes, we said crazy mean gun smugglers. Mexican cartels, too. If that doesn't sound like normal PG-rated fare to you, well, you're right, there's nothing too normal about "Max." Billed as a family adventure, this movie is probably best described as a mix of "Lassie" and "No Country for Old Men." It's like they invited the Coen brothers — or maybe Quentin Tarantino — to script a few scenes of a "Dora the Explorer" episode. We could go on with the analogies, but let's just say that there are still some people who'll appreciate "Max," directed and co-written by Boaz Yakin, because they love dogs, and thus any film about a good dog is a worthwhile endeavor. And the dog IS good. But beware: This is No Movie for Little Kids. We begin in Afghanistan, where Max (a Belgian Malinois, actually played by four pooches) is a highly trained military dog, performing risky searches alongside his devoted handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. We see Max singlehandedly locate a Taliban weapons cache in a secret compartment in a home. But then tragedy strikes, and Kyle is killed. Back in Texas, the Wincott family — Mom Pamela (Lauren Graham, totally underused), Dad Ray (Thomas Haden Church) and teenager Justin (Josh Wiggins) — are grieving at the funeral when they meet Max, who, heartbreakingly, knows his boss is in the coffin. Max, understandably, is suffering from trauma, and is hard to handle. He only seems calm around Justin; he senses the boy is Kyle's brother. The family brings the dog home. At first, Justin, sensitively portrayed by the sweet-faced, soulful Wiggins, wants no part of training a dog. He's obsessed with video games, and resentful of his father, who he feels has always favored hero Kyle. He'd rather stay in his room than manage a growling canine. But the movie dispenses with all that pretty quickly. Soon, Justin and Max are fast friends, nursing each other through tough times. Spicing things up a bit is a love interest for Justin, the plucky Carmen (Mia Xitlali), cousin of Justin's buddy Chuy (Dejon LaQuake), a typical movie best bud whose every line is, like, yo, more clichéd than the next. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for action violence, peril, brief language and some thematic elements." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Minions"

Sidekicks rarely shine when thrust into the spotlight, but what about a few hundred of them? The Minions, having been the best part of the two previous "Despicable Me" movies, have swarmed the screen in "Minions." As candidates for center stage, they are seemingly ill-suited. Slavishly — if rarely competently — devoted lackeys, they're underlings by both definition and verticality. They don't speak intelligibly, which, to be fair, isn't a bar all of Hollywood's leading men reach. Instead, they talk in a bright babble that belies their fondness for colorful phonetics. "Banana" and "piñata" are their kind of words. Their unsuitability for the lead role, or just about anything else, is much of the fun of "Minions," a happy henchmen overload that largely succeeds in its simple mission: More Minions! Directed by Pierre Coffin (who co-directed "Despicable Me" one and two and voices the Minions) and Kyle Balda, "Minions" begins in fine form. The little yellow ones are

July 16, 2015

already humming the Universal theme as the film begins. With Geoffrey Rush narrating, we get the history of the Minions, which stretches back across eons and begins with them — a curios early mammal — literally walking out of the sea. But the evolution stops there. For thousands of years, we see, they've been letting down their evil masters, from a Tyrannosaurus Rex accidentally tipped into a volcano, to Dracula, whom they excitedly wake with a birthday cake and wide-open blinds. The Minions have their own Ice Age, however, ending up leaderless in Antarctica. After a few hundred years, the joy of snow ball fights beginning to dim, three of them — Kevin, Bob and Stuart — set out on a quest to find a new supervillain to idolize. Soon, they're on their way to Villain-Con, a riff on ComicCon only a convention celebrating the likes of Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), an evil world-conqueror in a beehive. The trio inadvertently wins a job in Overkill's entourage, and they're soon enmeshed in her plan to take the British throne, along with Overkill's inventor, Herb (Jon Hamm). RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action and rude humor." RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Self/less"

"Self/less," if you couldn't tell from the preposterous title, is a deeply silly movie that takes itself very, very seriously. The premise is interesting enough: A dying man (Ben Kingsley) undergoes a procedure to save his mind by ditching his failing body for a shiny new model (Ryan Reynolds, you could do worse). But, the lofty ambitions, trite messages, half-hearted allegories and over-the-top caricatures make director Tarsem Singh's ("The Cell," ''The Fall") latest a misguidedly campy experience. Here, the dying man, Damian (Kingsley), is possibly the worst person in the world. In the opening scene, he destroys a young competitor who is aiming to encroach on his real estate empire. Damian, you see, is extremely wealthy and powerful. He's "the man who built New York from the ground up" and he can ruin another's life before lunch, almost for sport. He's also only got six months to live. His cancer has metastasized and he has yet to come to terms with it. He hasn't even told his daughter ("Downton Abbey's" Michelle Dockery in a tiny role), although we'll soon find out that they're estranged. This is a selfish, egotistical man. The type who walks all the way over to the driver's side of his town car to knock on the window so the driver will get out and open the passenger seat door for him. The type who is so consumed with his own specialness that he will pay $250 million for a new "vessel" for his brilliant mind. The type who also craves immortality so wholly that he doesn't ask too many questions about the origins of the new body. The doctor behind the controversial "shedding" procedure, Albright (a mustache-twirling Matthew Goode), snivels that the bodies are grown in labs. Right. Anyway, in his new, youthful body Damian goes off to live in New Orleans to play pickup basketball, party and get girls — a lot of them. (There's an entire montage of young beauties falling on his bed). Because even with 86 years of wisdom, when you're suddenly given the body of Ryan Reynolds, priorities shift. So much for using that great mind! RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence, some sexuality, and language." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

Scarlet Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock, second left, appears with minions Stuart, left, Kevin and Bob, right, in a scene from the animated feature, "Minions."

"Minions" a prequel for the kids By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Sidekicks rarely shine when thrust into the spotlight, but what about a few hundred of them?

The little yellow ones are already humming the Universal theme as the film begins.

Soon, they're on their way to VillainCon, a riff on Comic-Con only a convention celebrating the likes of Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), an evil world-conqueror in a beehive. The trio inadvertently wins a

job in Overkill's entourage, and they're soon enmeshed in her plan to take the British throne, along with Overkill's inventor, Herb (Jon Hamm). There are, it should be noted, more ambitious seats of power to set one's diabolical sights on. But this is 1960s Swinging London, a colorful if over-familiar backdrop, and the goggle-wearing Minions could just as well be chipper Mods. The irreverent slapstick unfortunately gives way to the kind of action set pieces that have now even corrupted children's movies. The bombast, though never serious, is still loud enough to, for too long, drown out the best thing the movie has going for it: The chuckles and squeaks of the Minions.

Indie film makes mark over holiday By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the holiday weekend's action films (Terminator Genisys) and sequels (Magic Mike XXL) was a glorified indie film plainly called Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and it was good to see something quirky fill in between all of the perfectly p re d i c t a b l e . I t ' s f u n n y, b u t never silly. Instead Me and Earl focuses on the damaged beauty that we sometimes have to cope with in our lives. The three main characters are all played by relative newcomers and they're supported by some top-notch character actors. "Me" is Greg (Thomas Mann), the first-person narrator of the film and its central figure. He's

a "terminally-awkward" student in suburban Pittsburgh who is just shy of content to skate t h ro u g h h i g h s c h o o l w i t h o u t generating anything in the form o f a m e a ningful re latio ns hip . His greatest fear, one he wears with a coat of prickliness, is to have either someone who cares greatly for him or that is his mortal enemy. Such fear cannot be uncommon in our nation's youth, but it remarkably sad in the way that Greg goes about it. His only personal creative outlet is in the amateur films he makes with Earl (RJ Cyler), his "co-worker" in name only because Greg is afraid to admit to having a friend. Together they remake great classic films with revised titles. For instance, My Dinner with Andre becomes My Dinner with Andre the Giant. By taking

a legitimate property and giving it a goofy name, the boys find that they're works only become terrible in the final editing p ro c e s s . I d o n ' t k n o w w h a t Andre the Giant, Andre Gregory, or Wallace Shawn may think of this notion, but after forty-two movies, Greg and Earl show no signs of giving in to the obvious pressures of bad aesthetics. Some influences - like Greg's dad (Nick Offerman) or their favorite teacher (Jon Bernthal) - even spur them on encouragingly. The dying girl comes in pretty early in the story. Her name is Rachel (Olivia Cooke) and she's Greg's classmate, though the two barely know each other at all. His mom (Connie Britton) forces him to call her up and visit her when she discovers that Rachel's been diagnosed with leukemia.

Over Greg's staunch and childish objections, he finally does meet up with Rachel (and her tipsy mother played by Molly Shannon) and the two forge a friendship based on shared awkwardness and mutual disdain for many of the things they face in their lives each day. The both love and hate the same cute/fake girl in their class (Katherine C. Hughes) and all of the Get Well cards that show up in the mail each day. Greg is quick to point out to the audience that his bond with Rachel will never be romantic. They soon become inseparable, though his procrastination at school and her looming cancer treatments give each a bleak outlook. Instead, they live in the hour and Greg does something particularly meaningful. He spends all of his time with Rachel, never giving her obligation

July 16, 2015

to feel anything other than the emotions that come to her mind. He's down when she sulks. He laughs with her when they discover his films. He even gets talked into making a movie just for her when Earl convinces him that it would be a good idea. When the time comes to apply for college, Rachel even guilts Greg into submitting an essay. Having a sick friend is a milestone benchmark for proving who you will be as a person, especially in young adulthood. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is based on a 2012 novel of the same name by Jesse Andrews. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl runs 105 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sexual content, drug material, language, and some thematic elements. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will meet with homeless people, immigrants and prisoners during his upcoming trip to Cuba and the U.S. He'll also preside over a meeting about religious liberty, a major topic for the U.S. Catholic Church in the wake of the Supreme Court's gay marriage decision. The Post and Courier of Charleston quotes Haley as telling the audience the Confederate flag will come down, adding that when it does, the families of the victims will be at peace. Lawsuit challenges governor's religious objections order

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A lawsuit has been filed challenging Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's executive order that aims to give special protections to people who oppose same-sex marriage. Gay rights advocates argue that it's unconstitutional and should be thrown out. The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana, the Forum for Equality Foundation and six New Orleans residents are challenging the governor's May 19 order in state court in Baton Rouge. Jindal, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, describes the legal challenge as a "left wing lawsuit." He says religious liberty is fundamental to "our freedom as Americans," and he won't back down from defending it.

CAM to present the works of Wyatt Kahn Exhibit scheduled to run September through December For The Edge

T

he Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis presents Object Paintings, the first solo museum exhibition of work by New York-based artist Wyatt Kahn, on view September 11 through December 27, 2015. Containing references ranging from Soviet architecture to Cubism, Kahn’s work explores how paintings can be made entirely without paint and hover between two and three dimensions. The exhibition features the artist’s signature constructed works, which he creates by stretching unprimed canvas over irregular, hand-cut wood panels and then piecing them together, leaving large gaps in the picture plane and disrupting the otherwise dense compositions. Smudges, stains, and erasure marks on the raw surface of the canvas allow the material to retain a flawed authenticity and allude to a human body, as seen in Him (2011), Her (2012), and Bad Girl (2015). These compositional gestures allow the viewer to, in the artist’s words, “experience the errors in the process that reveal my hand and the very human experience of imperfection.” In 2013, Kahn turned his attention to color, examining how white canvas can exude color from within. Taking a cue from the Old Masters of the Renaissance and their tradition of underpainting the

human figure, Kahn conceals brightly colored fabric underneath the stark white canvas, creating subtle tonal variations that quietly allude to skin tones. In recent works, Kahn’s compositions are no longer abstract, but are rather hand-cut shapes combined to form recognizable objects—for example, a clock, a drum, and a guitar. One of these paintings, Father Time (2014), is made up of three types of hand-drawn and shaped canvases: one group in which hand-written texts denote the subject (“tick tock”), another that serves as pictographic symbols of the overall painting, and a third that reveals an abstraction of the object depicted. This exhibition premieres a new series of relief paintings that are composed of multiple panels of varying depths. Taken as a whole, the works that comprise Wyatt Kahn: Object Paintings investigate how we read signs and symbols, and communicate narrative and content through abstract works of art. Wyatt Kahn (b. 1983, New York, New York) lives and works in New York. He received his M.F.A from Hunter College in 2012 and his B.F.A from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006. In fall 2005, Kahn will premiere a solo project at Performa, New York (2015). Recent solo exhibitions include Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich; Tanya Leighton, Berlin; Adrian Rosenfeld, Los

Angeles; LAXART, Los Angeles, and T293, Rome. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions, including The Space Between, FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2015); A Chromatic Loss, Bortolami, New York (2014); The Shaped Canvas, Revisited, Luxembourg & Dayan, New York (2014); and ReMap 4, Athens (2013). Kahn’s work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the CCS Bard Hessel Museum; and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Wyatt Kahn: White Paintings is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Jeffrey Uslip, Chief Curator. Australian Pink Floyd coming to St. Charles

Acclaimed tribute band, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, today announced a North American tour kicking

off on July 21 in Lewiston, New York at Artpark. The 30-plus date tour will take the world famous band to Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Atlanta, Montreal, New Orleans and more. Led Zeppelin2 will join the tour as special guests. Selling 4 million tickets worldwide and described by The Times as "the Gold Standard" and The Daily Mirror as "The Kings of The Genre," The Australian Pink Floyd Show gave its first concert in Adelaide, Australia in 1988. Since then, they have performed in over 35 countries worldwide; played at David Gilmore's 50th birthday celebration and were even joined on stage by Rick Wright. Performing the music of Pink Floyd with note for note perfection, this critically-acclaimed tribute show has been astonishing audiences worldwide and their plans for North America are no different as their live shows will be packed with the greatest Pink Floyd hits ever. Striving to reproduce the Pink Floyd experience and bring new music to new audiences, the live show continues t o i n c l u d e a s t u n n i n g l i g h t a n d l a s e r s h o w, v i d e o animations, film projected onto a large circular screen and other special effects. With 27 years of history, the world's biggest, best and greatest tribute band continues to delight audiences. Led Zeppelin2 - The Live Experience brings fans the excitement of Led Zeppelin "In Concert" by re-enacting the live improvisation and onstage interaction that earned Led Zeppelin their legendary status for performing. Rather than a "greatest hits" show, fans experience Zeppelin as Zeppelin would have played in front of an audience. The band has earned critical praise along the way with Chicago Sun Times proclaiming, "As good a Zep as Zep ever did back in the day." while the Dallas Observer says Led Zeppelin2 is "‌ the closest thing to seeing the real Led Zeppelin." TimeOut Chicago adds, "A lot of Zep tributes out there, but this one’s our favorite‌ its members fully immerse themselves in the musicianship and style of the four classic-rock heavyweights. That Yakuza howler Bruce Lamont does a mean Robert Plant is icing on the cake." A performance is scheduled Tuesday, August 4, at The Family Arena in St. Charles. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com. To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-534-1111. For help purchasing accessible seating, please call The Family Arena ADA Hotline at 636-896-4234.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, the chorihuevo torta served with chile-crusted French fries at Mission Taco Joint in Soulard. Below, the sign out front at Mission Taco Joint in Soulard.

Mission Taco Joint in Soulard By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Before attending a Cardinal game recently, my buddy John and I went on a mission to find a joint with great food and a great atmosphere. We found it in the aptly named Mission Taco Joint in Soulard. This St. Louis hot spot has plenty to offer in Mexican cuisine. Mission Taco gets creative with its selections and it rarely disappoints. The Soulard location, at 908 Lafayette Ave., is the second locale for Mission Taco. The original spot came in the The Loop at 6235 Delmar Blvd. and is still thriving today. In addition to their sensational food, Mission Taco offers great craft beer and cocktail choices and has a cool atmosphere with high and low wooden tables for dining, a large bar area and garage doors to open during nice weather. John and I were neither Mission Taco rookies on our visit, but we vowed to try some new dishes to expand our Mexican-cuisine horizons. We of course started with an appetizer. There are some unique appetizers on the menu and we chose the Mexi-Cali cheese curds. Battered in a breading made of Sub-Mission IPA beer, the “Marcoot Creamery” cheese curds are served with pork belly carnitas (which means “little meats”), ancho sauce and are topped with pickled onions and cilantro. Marcoot Creamery is a locally owned creamery in Greenville. Mission Taco likes to support local business when ordering its ingredients. John and I thought we were a little misled. By reading the menu we were under the impression the pork belly was going to be inside

24

the cheese curds, but it was served on the side. Unfortunately, the pork belly was only lukewarm, but it did have a good taste. The cheese curds were decent, but my favorite part were the pickled onions, which had a great taste. Now it was time for the main course. John went with some of the delectable tacos, while I delved into the torta options, which are Mexican sandwiches. The tacos are fairly small and served in a corn tortilla with a slew of scrumptious choices. John went with the baha fish and the roasted duck. The fish comes either wood-fire grilled or fried with a chipotle baja

sauce, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo and queso fresco, while the Chile roasted duck is served with crisp pork belly carnitas and an avocado serrano sauce. John was more than satisfied with both options. Now onto my gargantuan torta, which was accompanied by a side of chile-crusted French fries. I went with the chorihuevo, which was served on a giant crusty, white roll with house made chorizo sausage, a soft fried egg, pickled jalapenos, smashed black beans, Chihuahua cheese and garlic lime mayo. It had a sensational flavor, but to call it spicy would be an

July 16, 2015

understatement. Between the chorizo and the seedy jalapeno slices I couldn't feel my lips when I was done eating it. Normally this would be a deal breaker for me, but the taste before the spice was so outstanding that I would definitely eat it again. Creamy yolk cascaded over every bite and meshed well with the chorizo, jalapenos and black beans to put it over the top. The chile-crusted fries were really tasty. They were very fresh and the seasoning gave them a somewhat sweet taste. There are other delicious options at Mission Taco, too. I've tried the Brah'rito off of the burrito portion

of the menu on a previous visit and it is the bomb. It includes carne asada, chipotle bacon, black beans, crema, chile-crusted potato fries, Chihuahua cheese, ancho sauce and is topped with guac and pico. It's a monster, but worth every bite. On the appetizer menu the carne asada fries intrigue me. They're served with wood-fire grilled flank steak, chile-crusted potato fries and Chihuahua cheese topped with guacamole, crema and pico de gallo. Also on the appetizer menu there's the huitlacoche empanadas, with crisp corn masa pockets filled with roasted corn, poblano peppers, huitlacoche (a fungus found on corn and served as a Mexican delicacy), Chihuahua and goat cheese and served with salsa. There are plenty of taco choices to accompany the baha fish and roasted duck, like carne asada, chorizo, portobello mushrooms, beef brisket, chicken and even tofu. The Ahogada is another torta that caught my attention. It's served with slow roasted shredded pork, smashed black beans, Chihuahua cheese, pickled onions, chipotle bacon and smothered in a chile ancho sauce. Th ere is on e desser t men u item also — the churros. They are a Mexican pastry, fried crisp, cinnamon-sugar coated and served with Mexican chocolate sauce. As for price, Mission Taco takes it fairly easy on you. My torta was $9 and the cheese curds were $8, but John's tacos were only $3 and $3.50. The tacos are pretty small, so expect to eat a few. To check out everything Mission Taco has to offer visit www. missiontacostl.com. If you're in the mood for some creative Mexican fare it's a place to visit when you gotta eat.
