The wild blue yonder On July 12 and 13, area residents were offered flights aboard a World War II B-17 bomber at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield. One of just 13 B-17 bombers still flying, the “Movie Memphis Belle” is operated by the Liberty Foundation, a nonprofit flying museum that is dedicated to keeping one of our nation’s most famous planes alive. The B-17 currently touring the nation was built in 1945 for the war, but did not see any combat action. Further, it should not be confused with the original Memphis Belle, which was one of the first bombers of its kind to complete 25 missions over Europe. That feat was documented in the 1990 film, “Memphis Belle,’ which starred Matthew Modine, John Lithgow and Harry Connick Jr. B-17s, known as Flying Fortresses due to their ability to take a beating as well as dish one out with their 13 50-millimeter machine guns, often operated 5 to 7 miles above the earth, where temperatures below zero were constant. While the bomber has come and gone, the Liberty Foundation also accepts donations, which may be made by visiting its website, www.libertyfoundation.org. Photos by Bill Tucker.

A one-kilometer children’s fun run is a new addition to McKendree University’s “Harvest Challenge” road race on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Lebanon, Ill. Adult competitors can choose their distance, a 5K run-walk or a half-marathon run. Start time for the 5K (3.1 miles) and 13.1 mile-races is 8 a.m., after a pre-race briefing at 7:40 a.m. Both courses begin at the center of campus and travel through historic downtown Lebanon and the surrounding area. The “Kids’ K” option, for children ages 12 and under not entered in a longer race, will start at 8:50 a.m. at the Harvest Challenge finish line. The 1K (1,000 meters or .62 mile) run or walk will make a loop and return to the finish line chute.

Walkers and strollers are welcome to participate in the 5K or the 1K. Medals will be awarded in six age categories to the top three male and female finishers of each race, with trophies to the overall winners. “Our race has become a popular training opportunity for runners who will compete in the Chicago Marathon in October,” said Kim Smallheer, McKendree director of recreational programs and organizer of the Harvest Challenge. The fee is $15 for the 5K and $33 for the half-marathon ($20 or $40 respectively on race day). The 5K participants will receive threequarter sleeve T-shirts, while halfmarathoners will receive long-sleeve “performance” T-shirts and finisher medals. Post-race refreshments will be provided while supplies last. The “Kids’ K” fee is $5 and includes a bib number and runner ’s medal. Register in person on campus at the intramural gym inside the Melvin Price Convocation Center on Alton St.; or download and mail in the form on the website mckendree. edu/raceday. Narrated by renowned journalist and author Tom Brokaw, D-Day: Normandy 1944 provides a new, penetrating look at this defining moment in history in a truly unique manner. D-Day itself is wellknown, yet few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this became the most important location in the world. “We wanted to make a film to pay tribute to the millions of men and women, soldiers and civilians, who gave their lives for our freedom 70 years ago. Regardless of nationality, virtually everyone today has a parent, grandparent or even a great-grandparent with a connection to World War II,” explained writer and director Pascal Vuong. “I thought for a long time about how to produce a large format documentary on this subject, and finally found my own way of telling this complex story to family audiences using a brandnew ‘cocktail,’ mixing innovative film techniques.” Blending multiple cinematographic formats, including animation, CGI and stunning liveaction images, D-Day: Normandy 1944 brings this monumental event to the world’s largest screens for the very first time. Exploring science, technology, engineering and mathematics, audiences of all ages, including new generations, will discover from a

Science Center to screen D-Day film

The Saint Louis Science Center and 3D Entertainment Distribution invite audiences to step back in time with the new giant screen theater film D-Day: Normandy 1944, which opens at the Science Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on April 25, 2014. In May 1943, World War II is at its apex. To counter Hitler and the Axis forces, the Allies decide to open a second front on the western side of Europe. The Allied forces, led by U.S. General Eisenhower, have just months to organize the operation code-named “Overlord,” with only a 50/50 chance of success, that will break Hitler ’s Atlantic Wall fortress and lead to the Battle of Normandy.

new perspective in breathtaking OMNIMAX how this landing changed the course of history. “What I was drawn to in this film is that it tells us the story of D-Day in a new way that gives such clarity to one of the most important events in the history of mankind,” said Brokaw. “I originally thought this was going to be another traditional documentary featuring grainy black and white footage, but as soon as I saw the first minutes of this film on the giant OMNIMAX screen, I found it irresistible.” “After seeing this film, we think our audiences will feel a deeper gratitude for the courage and sacrifices of these champions of freedom,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of the Saint L o u i s S c i e n c e C e n t e r. “ A n d , because we are a science center, we hope our audiences will discover a deeper appreciation of the science, engineering and technology involved in this monumental event.” Over three years in the making and with a budget of $5 million, all live-action sequences for the film were shot exclusively on location in Normandy, France. Religion Religion briefs Methodist panel overturns pastor's defrocking

Church to change. Lomperis adds that he hopes Schaefer's restoration to ministry gets appealed to the church's highest court.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A United Methodist Church appeals panel has overturned the church's decision to defrock a pastor who presided over his son's same-sex wedding ceremony and said he would perform other gay marriages if asked. A lower church court suspended Frank Schaefer of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, last year for officiating at his son's 2007 wedding. The church then defrocked Schaefer because he wouldn't promise never to preside over another gay ceremony. Schaefer appealed, arguing the decision was wrong because it was based on an assumption he would break church law in the future. But at a news conference Tuesday, Schaefer said he "absolutely" will perform more samesex weddings, and is confident that church law will change. John Lomperis (lahm-PAYR'-is), director of the conservative group United Methodist Action, says Schaefer should have joined another denomination whose views he shares rather than expect the United Methodist

Freed Christian woman, family detained in Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — A lawyer for the Sudanese Christian woman sentenced to death and later freed says the woman and her family were detained at the international airport in Khartoum while trying to leave the country. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters in Washington that the Sudanese government informed American officials that 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim, her husband and two children were "detained for several hours" Tuesday over issues relating to their travel documents. Harf said the Sudanese assured the U.S. that the family is not under arrest, has "since been released" and is safe. She said U.S. officials are continuing to work on getting them out of the country. Ibrahim was raised by her Christian mother but her father was Muslim, making her a Muslim under Sudanese law, so the country

didn't recognize her Christian wedding to an American citizen. Instead, she was convicted of adultery and apostasy and sentenced to 100 lashes and execution by hanging. A Sudanese appeals court dropped Ibrahim's charges and freed her after worldwide outrage.

Judge voids Austin's pregnancy-center law

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge has thrown out an city ordinance in Austin, Texas, that required pregnancy resource centers — religiously-based organizations that do not offer abortions or refer women to abortion providers — to post signs announcing they do not offer medical care. The Austin American-Statesman reports that Judge Lee Yeakel ruled Monday that the requirement is unconstitutionally vague and violates the centers' due process rights. The ordinance was passed unanimously by the Austin City Council in 2012. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of four pregnancy centers — LifeCare, Austin

Pregnancy Resource Center, South Austin Pregnancy Resource Center and the Gabriel Project, which is run by Catholic Charities of Central Texas.

Mormon church excommunicates women's group founder

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church has excommunicated the prominent founder of a Mormon women's group. The group, Ordain Women, announced Monday afternoon that Kate Kelly's former church leaders in Virginia notified her of the decision. Kelly's former leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had weighed the high-profile decision overnight. She did not attend the disciplinary hearing but instead held a vigil in Salt Lake City with about 200 supporters. As the leader of Ordain Women, Kelly is accused of apostasy, which is repeated and public advocacy of positions that oppose church teachings.

When our brewers were working on variations to a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in hat very vessel. You could call it fate, but the brewers called it Tank 7, and so it is. The taste of this straw-colored ale begins with a burst of fruity Belgian yeast characteristics and big grapefruit-hoppy notes. The maltiness tappers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Since beginning his career with The Beatles in the 1960s, Ringo has been one of the world’s brightest musical luminaries. He has enjoyed a successful, dynamic solo career as a singer, songwriter, drummer, collaborator, and actor. Drawing inspiration from c l a s s i c b l u e s , s o u l , c o u n t r y, honky-tonk and rock ‘n’ roll, he continues to play an important recording, touring, and unofficial mentoring role in modern music. Ringo’s candor, wit and soul are the lifeblood of his music. As he sang on the autobiographical Liverpool 8, “I always followed my heart and I never missed a beat.” Peace and love are his life’s rhythm and melody, and he propels this universal message in everything he does: his evocative artwork, his enthused live performances, his legendary songs, all imbued with the joy, reflection, and wisdom of the music icon the world knows and loves simply as ‘Ringo.’ Ringo has toured with over 12 All Starr Bands since the 1990s. Members who will be performing as part of His All Starr Band in St. Louis include Steve Lukather from Toto, Richard Page from Mr. Mister, Gregg Rolie from Santana & Journey, the phenomenal Todd R u n d g r e n , Wa r r e n H a m a n d Gregg Bissonette.

Fox to welcome Bob Weir

Bob Weir and Ratdog with very special guest The Chris Robinson Brotherhood will appear Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. Live at The Fox Theatre. Tickets are $99.50, $59.50, $49.50, $39.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. With a touring history that has made him one of the most traveled road musicians of all time and a restless music personality that has kept him occupied for over 50 years, Weir knows a thing or two about staying fresh and living in the moment. Although best known as one of the founding members of the Grateful Dead, adding Dead staples such as “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia,” and “Cassidy” to the band’s catalog, Weir obtained a long and affluent music career that has allowed him to do what he loves and share it with others for nearly his entire life. In 1964, at the age of 17, Weir spent the majority of his time at a Palo Alto music store where Jerry Garcia taught guitar lessons. It wasn’t long before Weir and Garcia, along with Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, formed a blues and folk outfit. Originally called Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, the band was later renamed The Warlocks—adding Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzman to the lineup—and eventually came to be known as the Grateful Dead.

Music For The Edge Two of the greatest performers in American music history will appear this summer at the Du Quoin State Fair. Fair Manager Shannon Woodworth announced today the 2014 event will open with an all-star weekend of entertainment featuring Foreigner and Kenny Rogers. “We have assembled a top-notch lineup of grandstand entertainers to go along with an outstanding array of free entertainment and educational opportunities on the grounds in an effort to make this the most family-friendly fair ever,” Woodworth said. “Our goal is the best 11 days of entertainment and education offered in Du Quoin’s long history.” “This year’s fair is going to be something you don’t want to miss,” Agriculture Director Bob Flider said. “There will be something for every member of the family, from agriculture, to games and rides, to a terrific grandstand lineup, so mark your calendars and plan to visit the fair August 22 to September 1.” Foreigner has 10 multi-platinum albums to its credit as well as 75 million digital downloads, more than any other classic rock act in history. Its hits include such rock staples as “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Hot Blooded” and “Double Vision.” When the band performs its bestknown song, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” during its Saturday, Aug. 23, concert, a choir of Du Quoin High School students will sing backup. “This is an incredible opportunity for these wonderful high school students to take the stage and perform alongside one of the greatest and most popular rock acts of all-time,” Woodworth said. Country music Hall of Famer Rogers will bring his long list of timeless classics and number one singles to Du Quoin Sunday, Aug. 24. That list that includes such memorable tunes as “The Gambler,” “Lady,” “Lucille,” “Islands In The

For The Edge

Above, Foreigner. Below, Kenny Rogers. Stream” and “We’ve Got Tonight.” “Between these two shows, nearly every song that is sung will have been a hit at some point,” Woodworth said. “America’s greatest music and greatest performers are coming to Du Quoin.” On Monday, Aug. 25, two-time Grammy Award and three-time CMA Award-winning artist Travis Tritt will perform. Tritt, who is known for hits like “Here’s A Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares),” “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” and “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” has sold more than 25 million albums in his

illustrious career. On Tuesday night, the Jon Henninger Band will take the grandstand stage. The contemporary gospel group’s hit song “We Will Stand” was featured at the Daytona 500 and is the theme song for the Code Of Support Foundation, which assists American troops and military veterans. The following night, pro wrestling Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler will be featured in the main attraction against Scott Steiner as USA Championship Wrestling comes to the Du Quoin State Fair.

“There will be a number of wrestling greats who enter the ring at the grandstand that night,” Woodworth said. “This is a family event where children and their parents can spend time together while enjoying professional wrestling at its best.” .38 Special has been booked Thursday, Aug. 28. The southern rock band charted several singles in the 1980s, including “Hold On Loosely,” “Rockin” Into The Night,” “Caught Up In You” and “Fantasy Girl.” On Friday, Aug. 29, country music’s Rodney Atkins is the featured entertainment. Atkins’ song “If You’re Going Through Hell” was not only a number one hit in 2006, but also the most played country song of the year. His other number one hits are “These Are My People,” “Take A Back Road” and “It’s America.” The grandstand performances conclude on Saturday, Aug. 30, with KC and the Sunshine Band. Founded in 1973, this band used a mix of funk, R&B and disco to create such super hits as “Get Down Tonight,” “Shake Your Booty” and “That’s The Way (I Like It).” All the grandstand shows are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. With the exception of the gospel show, which costs $10 a seat, and the wrestling match, which is priced at $20 for adults and $10 for children, tickets cost either $25 or $30. Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, June 18 at 9 a.m. at the fairgrounds ticket window. Phone orders will be taken beginning at 10 a.m. that day. Seats in the first three rows will be made available on a first-come, firstserve basis. “For a chance at the best seats, it’s best to be waiting at the window at 9 a.m.,” Woodworth said. Harness racing will begin

July 17, 2014

the fair with three sessions at the grandstand on the opening weekend, while championship auto racing will conclude it Labor Day weekend with 100-mile races scheduled for both Sunday and Monday (Aug. 31 and Sept. 1). In addition to the grandstand lineup, free attractions will be offered daily on the grounds throughout the fair’s 11-day run. Two of the featured shows will be “The Marvelous Mutts” and “The Grizzly Experience.” Others include Mater, the tow truck from the Disney movie ‘Cars,’ Elvis impersonators, The Enchanted Wagon, Magic Mike, The Horse Whisperer and Riverboat John. The fair also will offer a veterans appreciation day that includes free parking, free food and free entertainment in VIP Tent One for military veterans. “Private sponsors have made this event possible,” Woodworth said. “At the very mention of veterans, Francis Pass of Pass One Hour Heating and Air and Chip Banks of Chip Banks Chevrolet Buick in Du Quoin didn’t blink at the opportunity to financially support our nation’s greatest heroes.” Pepsi MidAmerica will also provide soft drinks for veterans. The fair opens with its annual parade on Friday, Aug. 22. Jeannine Baxter, the fair’s long-time receptionist, will serve as parade marshal. “Talk about ‘Love A Fair,’ it’s Jeannine’s love for the Du Quoin State Fair that keeps her coming back year after year,” Woodworth said. “She is loved and respected throughout Du Quoin and all of Southern Illinois and is a woman full of compassion and grace.” Friday also will be Jeannine Baxter Day at the fair.

"Venus in Fur"

Roman Polanski. Sadomasochism. What could possible go wrong? The combination of director and subject material in "Venus in Fur" is wickedly perverse, just as it should be. Polanski and David Ives' award-winning play are a match made if not in heaven, then surely in some demon's dungeon. The play was a Broadway hit, led by a star-making, Tonywinning performance by Nina Arianda. Here French actress Emmanuelle Seigner takes over the role of Vanda, a tardy, gum-smacking actress who arrives on a stormy night for an audition with a director (Mathieu Amalric) at a Paris theater for a production called "Venus in Fur." That is just the start of the hall of mirrors. "Venus in Fur" is a movie-within-a-play based on a play-within-a-play, which itself is based on a novel-within-a-novel. The origin is Austrian author Leopold von SacherMasoch's semi-autobiographical 1870 novella "Venus in Furs," about a man who craves to be dominated by his love, Vanda. ("Masochist" derives from the author's name.) Ives' play is about an arrogant playwright adapting the novel for the stage. Polanski had stayed largely faithful to the play, but has translated it to French, substituted his wife (Seigner) for Vanda, cast Amalric as a younger doppelganger for himself and added a terrific, carnival-esque score by Alexander Desplat. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some bloody violence." RUNNING TIME: 96 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Transformers: Age of Extenction"

Crash. Shatter. Boom. Crash. Shatter. Boom. Smattering of silly dialogue. Pretty girl screams: "Dad!" Crash. Shatter. Boom. Silly dialogue. "DAD!!!" Crash. Shatter. Boom. What? Oh, sorry. We were falling into a trance there. Which is, dear moviegoer, what may happen to you during Michael Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction," the fourth Transformers film and, at 165 minutes, precariously close to the three-hour mark that Bay undoubtedly will reach — by our sophisticated calculations, and at the current growth rate, with his sixth installment. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Despite what you've just read, this film will likely be a massive hit because by now, if you're buying a "Transformers" ticket, you surely know what you're getting into, and you want more, more, more. And Bay is the Master of More. Or just take it from the 11-year-old sitting next to me, who reserved any audible judgment — he, too was in a trance, though maybe from sugar intake — until the moment he saw a Transformer become a dinosaur. Overwhelmed by the pairing, he proclaimed: "That's the sickest thing I've ever seen in my life." It was as if peanut butter and jelly had been tasted together for the first time. While you ponder where between these extreme reactions you'll fall, a quick update. This time, there's a whole new human cast. Most important, Mark Wahlberg has replaced Shia LaBeouf as, well, Main Human Guy, and the good news is that Wahlberg's grounded quality, rough charm and really nice biceps make him a thoroughly welcome presence. The bad news: He isn't immune to the numbing effects of some desperately cheesy dialogue (Ehren Kruger wrote the screenplay). RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, language and brief innuendo." RUNNING TIME: 165 minutes.

"They Came Together"

David Wain's "They Came Together" identifies the tropes of the romantic comedy with uncommon acuity. If only it would stop winking so much. Wain has made his film with an enviable collection of funny people. It stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler as the intractably drawn together couple, and Wain wrote it with "Wet Hot American Summer" co-writer and fellow "The State" alum Michael Showalter. Nearly everyone in the movie, even in small roles filled by Ed Helms to Bill Hader, is a comic talent. Most if not all of the filmmakers and cast have themselves trafficked in that so-loved, so-loathed genre — including Wain's last movie, "Wanderlust." ''They Came Together" thus feels like a parody party, thrown by those who know romcoms from the inside out. But in spoofing romantic comedies, Wain has made a film that can be both hailed and derided for its nonstop cleverness. "They Came Together" is an excellent sketch. It is a less successful movie. The film is framed by the couple — Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler) — explaining to friends (Hader, Ellie Kemper) over dinner how they met. The clichés come fast and furious, beginning with their repeated instance that New York — a city that should feel ashamed of itself for how many cheesy romances it has fostered — is really, truly its own character in their story. At repeating this fake witticism, Poehler mugs for the camera, looking directly into it, the overriding posture of Wain's self-aware satire. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and sexual content." RUNNING TIME: 83 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Tammy"

Meet Tammy. Boy, is she a mess. Angry, profane and aggressive, then suddenly shy and sweet. Sometimes she's funny, sometimes totally not. She can't figure out what she wants to do or be, or where to go. She has loads of people around her, yet can't figure out what to do with them. This one's in desperate need of outside help. And you thought we were talking about Tammy, the character — played by lovable Melissa McCarthy in her first venture as producer, star and co-writer with husband Ben Falcone. Well, sure. But really we're talking about "Tammy" the movie, about which all of the above descriptions are also true. Especially the "mess" part. Other recent comedies have been described as elongated "Saturday Night Live" skits, but it's especially apt here, and not just because McCarthy and Falcone, who also directs, are veteran improv performers. Exaggerated characters, some wacky side plots, a couple of famous faces sprinkled in, and you're off. Some of it's good, some terrible, but you keep it all, 'cause, hey, why not? It's a comedy sketch. Only this is a much anticipated, heavily promoted feature-length film, and as such, it can only be deemed an unfortunate, though ambitious and intermittently enjoyable, misfire for McCarthy, so adorably entertaining in better movies like "Bridesmaids" and "The Heat." Part of the problem is miscasting. "Tammy" is full of name actors: Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Toni Collette, Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh, Dan Akyroyd. Most are misused. (Bates is a happy exception.) RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language, including sexual references."

"LIfe Itself"

If Roger Ebert had never written a film review or dramatically articulated his thumb, he would have still been a man to admire. Steve James' new documentary on the late critic has plenty on Ebert's Chicago rise to Pulitzer-winning reporter, his unique position as the world's most famous film critic and his robustly populist cinephilia. But what comes through most in "Life Itself," a film named after Ebert's 2011 memoir, is his great, open-minded vigor. His undying movie love. His passionate embrace of the Internet late in life. His bravery in the face of cancer. His championing of overlooked filmmakers. His generous support of younger critics. Ebert's voice grew only stronger after he lost it. His life seemed to only swell in integrity with age. For someone who made a living in criticism, he was an unusually positive force, largely free of the cynicism that often plagues the profession. Capturing that is the essence of "Life Itself," which, at its best, has the glow of a wake in an old Chicago bar, the kind Ebert used to haunt with regularity and the kind some of his old newspaper pals speak from in the documentary. Before giving up drinking, Ebert lived as fast as he wrote. James has often documented Windy City tales, including "Hoop Dreams" and "The Interrupters" — films Ebert hailed. "Hoop Dreams," Ebert wrote with typical directness, "is what the movies are for. It takes us, shakes us and makes us think in new ways about the world around us. It gives us the impression of having touched life itself." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for brief sexual images/nudity and language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Boyhood"

Early in "Boyhood," Richard Linklater's bracingly original, utterly enthralling new film about the passage of time through the lens of one boy's life, we find our characters at a real Houston Astros game. And, with the cameras rolling, wouldn't you know it — the Astros hit a home run. How lucky, you think, that Linklater was able to incorporate a real-life homer into his scene. But as the film progresses — at its own relaxed, distinctive pace — you soon realize that virtually every scene is a little home run of its own. And luck has very little to do with it. We already knew Linklater was one of our most accomplished independent filmmakers, and anyone who's a fan of his "Before" trilogy — "Before Sunrise," ''Before Sunset" and the recent, wonderful "Before Midnight" — knows how eloquently he can portray the passage of time. But "Boyhood" is something different entirely. Filmed over 12 years, for a few days each year, the movie follows one family — two parents, two kids — as they navigate love, marriage, divorce, school, work, pain, pleasure and everything else a family can go through. Yet the story isn't particularly dramatic — certainly not by the standards of typical Hollywood storytelling. Indeed, its utter simplicity — some might say even banality — is its strength. What happens to this family, and specifically to Mason, the main character, over 12 years? Life. That's what happens. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language including sexual references, and for teen drug and alcohol use." RUNNING TIME: 166 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

Thumbs up to Ebert documentary By JAKE COYLE Associated Press If Roger Ebert had never written a film review or dramatically articulated his thumb, he would have still been a man to admire.

It takes us, shakes us and makes us think in new ways about the

world around us. It gives us the impression of having touched life itself." Ebert was defined, perhaps, by that eagerness to see outside himself. In a taped speech at the start of the documentary, he calls the movies "a machine that generates empathy." Of course, he wasn't a saint. Ebert could be snippy and egotistical, particularly when prodded by his "At the Movies" co-host, Gene Siskel. Some of the most entertaining clips in "Life Itself" are familiar videos that have long been on YouTube of the two bickering in outtakes. Ebert's voluminous reviews and simple, up-or-down judgments, too, were sometimes derided as "junk food," as Time's Richard Corliss once levied. Either way, most writers today would gladly welcome a return to the days when any single critic held such sway,

regardless of its nutritional value. Time, in the end, has been kind to Ebert's achievement. Corliss sounds regretful in the documentary, and director Werner Herzog's label of Ebert — "a soldier of cinema" — has won out. James began the documentary before Ebert's passing at the age of 70 in April 2013. So the film is full of footage of Ebert battling his cancer of the thyroid and salivary glands, and conspiring with his longtime wife, Chaz, to sneak out of the hospital to go to the movies. He even sneaks information on his medical status to James that he shields from Chaz. (She, it should be noted, is in many ways the hero of the film: an astoundingly steadfast companion to her husband through his pain.) Despite surgeries that removed his lower jaw and left him unable to speak, Ebert kept typing away up to the end.

Week sees release of two forgettable films By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Last summer's surprise hit called "The Heat" hardly put Melissa McCarthy on the map. "Bridesmaids" did that. The 2011 megahit was a show that launched Kristen Wiig into features, but made McCarthy a scene-stealing star. Fans of her CBS comedy, "Mike & Molly," are also very devoted. What "The Heat" did do was given her moderate credibility with the studios for banking as a headlining star. I suppose that might have had a little bit to do with her new film, "Tammy," being released as the 'big new film' over the Fourth of July holiday. Forget that it was female-oriented, rated 'R', and chock full of aging comedy stars that are no longer A-list;

this was a good idea. I'd heard numerous slams against Tammy from the early reviews and my aunt (one of those "Mike & Molly" fans I mentioned earlier), none of which were kind. The best thing I'd heard about it was that it was a depressing comedy. I disagree. For me, Tammy was borderline absurd. It reminded me a little of Tommy Boy, the cherished 1995 Chris Farley and David Spade vehicle that - for me - is an example of terrible filmmaking at its worst. But Tammy, both the film and the central character, just skirt that level of ridiculousness. Instead, McCarthy uses her skillful comedic chops to takes the worst day of Tammy's life and turn it into a growth experience. The style is reminiscent of "Wedding Crashers; "the content is equal buffoonery.

After spectacularly wrecking her car and losing her job, Tammy hoofs it home to find her husband (Nat Faxon) in the early stages of a romantic dinner affair with their next door neighbor (Toni Collette). One dramatic breakdown later lands Tammy on the road trip of a lifetime with her boozy, diabetic grandmother (Susan Sarandon). Grandma's got a potty mouth, but she's also able to make Tammy realize that life is worth living and not the wallowing that their journey (eventually to Niagara Falls) initially sports. My favorite scene was when they do an a cappella version of The Allman Brothers song "Midnight Rider". It was bizarre, hilarious, and surprisingly patriotic. If this isn't for you, go watch Transformers again.

Tammy runs 96 minutes and is rated R for language including sexual references. I give this film one and a half stars out of four. ••• One of the other films to debut over this past holiday weekend was for the kids. It's called "Earth to Echo" and I don't blame you if you hadn't heard of it before it came out. Sixth place openings don't get a lot of press after they've already bombed. I'd originally written it off as an E.T. rip-off, but now I'm sure I gave it too much credit. A q u a r t e t o f yo u n g t e e n s (Teo Halm, Brian Bradley, Reese Hartwig, Ella Wahlestedt) decide that they must follow the bizarre map that has infested their electronic devices on the final night before they're forced to move away from the freeway extension that is

July 17, 2014

about to flex its eminent domain muscles on their neighborhood. In the Nevada desert they find a little owl-shaped alien being that they name Echo and help him on a scavenger hunt mission to locate his missing ship. There is little to fear in a film where the pursuing villain is played by Jason GrayStanford (TV's "Monk"). Instead, Earth to Echo reminds me of some of the simple sci-fi films that were made for children when I was a kid, like "Flight of the Navigator" and "Batteries Not Included." I'm appreciative for the nostalgia of the moment, but this film is better left forgotten. Earth to Echo runs 89 minutes and is rated PG for some action and peril, and mild language. I give this film one star out of four.

Pere Marquette Lodge offers more than meets the eye By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge So, you’ve visited Pere Marquette State Park and often thought about staying in the Lodge but, like so many other things, you’ve never gotten around to it. Stop putting it off. Trust me. An Alton native, I waited 51 years. Mistake. Pere Marquette Lodge, located in Pere Marquette State Park north of Grafton, is the getaway you’ve been looking for. There’s lodging, dining and plenty to keep you busy – or not. When the last of the snow melted in March, my wife and I decided to take a weekend off and Pere Marquette Lodge was our choice. And then we had to make another. There are three choices of accommodations: Cabins, newwing lodge rooms and historicwing lodge rooms. We opted for a cabin – since the seasonal price for one that slept two was a very reasonable $118. You’ve seen the cabins, right? Well, they are far more spacious and far more modern than you’d expect. They’re suprisingly clean, too, given the fact that they stand at the foot of a forest. We peeked inside one of the new-wing lodge rooms and it looked to be a cross between Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and a Hampton Inn – nice, rustic, not a

tremendous amount of room. We toured the Lodge and found the indoor swimming pool, game room, restaurant and gift shop. We stopped in the Mary Michelle Winery, located just beyond the front desk, ordered a couple of drinks and spent the next hour relaxing in the Lodge’s

great room, where a couple of children tried to play chess on the almost life-sized board. You’ve seen it, right? The next morning, found us eating breakfast in the Lodge’s restaurant. The restaurant offered an outstanding breakfast buffet that

didn’t empty the wallet. Scrambled eggs, French toast and biscuits and gravy done the right way were among the most memorable selections. Lunch and dinner, however, are the big draws as many folks stop for a meal at Pere Marquette Lodge either headed to or coming from

Calhoun County during apple season. The place can get crowded in the fall as folks patiently wait for burgers, steaks, fish and, yes, fried chicken. At the end of March, there wasn’t a whole lot going on at the Lodge – that's why we went when we did. We weren't looking for a whole lot going on. But spring, summer and fall see a number of programs scheduled to cater to a variety of interests. Parasailing will be offered on the Illinois River in June and July. Additional events this summer include: a Hummingbird Festival, an evening with Elvis, a couple of murder-mystery dinner theaters and themed beer garden events. Or, you can lose yourself in Pere Marquette Park, hiking one of its many trials or stopping by the visitor ’s center for lessons in history and geography. You can also drive back to Grafton and visit Raging Rivers water park or sail down a zipline. To the north are Hardin, Batchtown and Eldred – quiet, quaint farm communities where everyone still says hello. There’s plenty to do – or not do – at Pere Marquette Lodge. Stop waiting and make a reservation. It took me 51 years to figure it out – and I won’t be waiting another 51 to go again. For more information, visit www. pmlodge.net or call 786-2331.

Eating your way across Missouri Here's a look at the places you don't want to miss By TOM UHLENBROCK Missouri Department of Tourism Deciding on a dessert at the Blue Owl brought to mind the restaurant scene from the 1996 movie "Michael," starring John Travolta as an archangel. Michael asks the waitress what kind of pie they serve. "Apple, banana cream, coconut cream, sour cream raisin, chocolate cream, strawberry rhubarb and cherry," his server replies. Being a naughty archangel, Michael says, "We want two slices of everything and vanilla ice cream on the side." Summer is the perfect time to cruise the countryside for the "best of" food and drink Missouri has to offer. With the help of the readers at Rural Missouri magazine, here is a list of the Top 10 spots to find everything from breakfast to barbecue, chicken wings to ice cream. The Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery in the quaint Mississippi River town of Kimmswick is a good place to start, because it is the perennial winner in the dessert category. The legendary Levee High Caramel Apple Pecan Pie is named for the levee that saved the town during the Great Flood of 1993. After the pie was featured on Oprah, in 2011, followed by the Today Show, mail orders poured in from throughout the country. "We peeled 75,000 apples in a month's time to feed the United States of America," said Mary Hostetter, who started the business with five employees in 1985 and now has more than 100 workers in four outlets, including Festus and House Springs.

While pie created its nationwide reputation – the Blue Owl currently offers 30 varieties, some seasonal – Hostetter pointed out other favorites on the menu, including the white chili, Reuben sandwich and chicken fried steak. Just remember to save room for dessert. Kimmswick is a couple of miles off Interstate 55, at exit 186, about 25 miles south of downtown St. Louis.

The Blue Owl is the centerpiece of a thriving downtown that features more than 30 shops, historic building and museums. That's good because you'll need a little walking room after finishing off lunch with a foot-high slice of caramel apple pie. Located on historic Route 66, the restaurant uses a special rub for its beef and pork and then smokes it in cherry wood. Runner-up was Lutz's BBQ in Jefferson City. Best breakfast: Billy Gail's Café in Branson. The pancakes used to be described as big as a hubcap. But since hubcaps have gone the way of pay phones, let's say they're as big as a medium pizza. Runner-up was Country Bob's Diner in St. James. Best pizza: Brooklyn Pizza in Fulton. The pies are made with the freshest ingredients, including whole-milk mozzarella cheese. Runner-up was Shakespeare's Pizza in Columbia. Best Agri-Missouri product: Burgers' Smokehouse in California. The smokehouse produces nearly half a million hickory-smoked hams a year. Runner-up was Vera Belle Soap Co. in Hannibal. Best winery: St. James Winery in St. James. The winery had 15 best of class awards, 10 double gold awards and 40 gold medals in last year's wine competition. Runner-up was River Ridge Winery in Commerce. Best sandwich: Café Blackadder in Warrensburg. One of the best sellers is the Hearty Turkey Salami Panini. Runner-up was the barbecue sandwich at Piggy's in O'Fallon. Best chili: Casper's in Springfield. The concoction is unusual because it has no tomatoes or onion, but there is plenty of beef in a "secret base." Runner-up was Booches in Columbia. Best ice cream shop: Central Dairy in Jefferson City. The dairy makes 50 flavors from Missouri cows located within a 65-mile radius. Runner-up was Beggs Berry World in Benton.

The Arts Dance St. Louis announces season For The Edge Dance St. Louis announces its full 2014-2015 season, which features eight striking, entertaining and diverse productions. The upcoming 49th season includes: New Dance Horizons III, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Tango Buenos Aires, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Compagnie Käfig in Correria Agwa, the 8th Annual SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL 2015 and two co-presentations with the U.S. Bank Broadway Series at the Fox Theatre: Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage and STOMP. Season ticket packages are currently on sale and single tickets sales for certain shows go on sale on September 2, 2014. New Dance Horizons III October 10 & 11, 2014 Touhill Performing Arts Center Dance St. Louis kicks off the season with its very own commissioned production, New Dance Horizons. The concept is simple, and the result is stunning. Dance St. Louis brings three nationally renowned c h o re o g r a p h e r s t o S t . L o u i s , pairing each one with a local professional dance company to create distinct world premieres. N o w i n i t s t h i rd y e a r, N e w Dance Horizons III welcomes the B i g M u d d y D a n c e C o m p a n y, which performs a new work by the dynamic and accomplished Katarzyna Skarpetowska, a native of Warsaw, Poland, Julliard graduate and current dancer with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Katarzyna has worked with the likes of David Parsons and Robert Battle, and professional companies across the country have performed her choreography. MADCO performs a new work by Roni Koresh, an Israeli-born choreographer and founder of Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company who blends ballet, modern and jazz, and has earned a reputation for highly technical and emotionally charged work. Choreographing since the age of 14 and dubbed a “prodigy” in the press, the impressive Brian Enos, former Houston Ballet dancer and Hubbard Street choreographer, collaborates with Saint Louis Ballet. New Dance Horizons III is a part of the American Arts Experience – St Louis festival. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage October 21 – November 2, 2014 Fox Theatre Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance and sensational dancing. Seen by millions across the globe, this worldwide smash hit tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds, who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage features the hit songs, “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and the heart stopping “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” London’s Sunday Express says, “This crowd-pleasing stage adaptation hits the jackpot!” Don’t miss this record-breaking live theatre sensation. Dance Theatre of Harlem November 7 & 8, 2014 Touhill Performing Arts Center The country’s first AfricanAmerican ballet company returns to St. Louis in all its splendor, glory and magnificence! Founded

For The Edge

The Dance Theatre of Harlem will appear at the Touhill Performing Arts Ceenter Nov. 7 and 8. in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and the late Karel Shook, Dance Theatre of Harlem was considered “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (The New York Times, 1971). After its establishment, the company received unparalleled international acclaim and unprecedented success. It has been said that Dance Theatre of Harlem definitively debunked stereotypical opinions that African Americans could not dance ballet. Now, almost a half-century later, and after an eight-year hiatus, Dance Theatre of Harlem has re-launched. Under the artistic direction of the remarkable Virginia Johnson, former Dance Theatre of Harlem principal dancer and founding member, the company consists of 18 racially diverse dance artists, who perform an eclectic and demanding repertoire at the highest level, ranging from new and classical to neoclassical and contemporary. In the past year alone, the company has received outstanding accolades, critical acclaim and extensive media attention. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the resurgence of Dance Theatre of Harlem! Tango Buenos Aires January 30 & 31, 2015 Touhill Performing Arts Center Back by popular demand, Tango Buenos Aires, one of Argentina’s greatest cultural exports, presents another fiery, hypnotic a n d e x p re s s i v e p e r f o r m a n c e . Accompanied by musicians from Buenos Aires, the dancers flawlessly execute the Tango with impressively intricate muscular grace and interlacing movements between couples. For this special production, Tango Buenos Aires performs the “Song of Eva Perón” – a Tango dance and music presentation inspired by the most important feminine character in Argentinian history, Eva Perón. Tracing her epic life—from her ascent to fame in the 1930s to her death in 1952—this sparkling and poignant spectacle reveals the influence of Tango on Perón’s life. It’s a saucy and passionate story that keeps

you fully engaged while you’re simultaneously swaying in your seat. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet February 27 & 28, 2015 Touhill Performing Arts Center Cutting-edge, sophisticated, versatile, gifted and techniqueconscious – all describe the topflight dancers of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Hailed by The New York Times as “a breath of fresh air” and by the Boston Herald as the “classically trained company of the future,” Aspen Santa Fe Ballet combines rugged athleticism with liquid grace, and blends European aesthetic with American vigor. The company, also known for its commitment to commissioning new works, performs from a diverse and engaging repertoire by some of the world’s foremost choreographers, ranging from Twyla Tharp and William Forsythe to Nicolo Fonte and Moses Pendelton. With its sophisticated repertoire and broad appeal, combined with a blend of entertaining and engrossing contemporary dance, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet is one of the great success stories in American dance today. Composed of 12 young, talented dancers, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet presents a lively program enjoyable for all audiences. STOMP April 10-12, 2015 Fox Theatre See what all the noise is about! STOMP is explosive, inventive, provocative, witty, and utterly unique—an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered armfuls of awards and rave reviews and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eightmember troupe uses everything b u t c o n v e n t i o n a l p e rc u s s i o n instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. Year after year, audiences worldwide keep coming back for more of this pulsepounding electrifying show. As the Boston Globe says, “If you haven’t

seen STOMP, GO! If you have seen it, take someone and share the pleasure!” Compagnie Käfig in Correria Agwa / CCN Créteil et Val-deMarne April 24 & 25, 2015 Touhill Performing Arts Center There’s hip-hop and then there’s Compagnie Käfig’s brand of hiphop, with its global composition, international flavor and fusion of styles. With dancers set in motion to the rhythmic beats of samba, bossa nova and electronic music, this show is a savvy, wild mash-up of innovative, dynamic choreography that promises to be one of the most entertaining highlights of the year. Compagnie Käfig is the brainchild of Mourad Merzouki, a native of Lyon, France who studied martial arts and circus arts as a child and was influenced by hip-hop as a teen. Since 1996, the company has expanded the language of hip-hop by cleverly introducing a wide range of influences, ranging from Bollywood, Russian dance and contemporary dance to samba and capoeira to Merzouki’s own expertise in circus and martial arts. By avoiding social stereotypes, Compagnie Käfig has managed to create its own unique style that does not deny its hip-hop origins, but rather enables the hip-hop movement to win over diverse audiences around the world. Take a seat, sit back and enjoy a transformation in modern hip-hop like no other. 8th Annual SPRING TO DANCE® FESTIVAL 2015 May 22-24, 2015 Touhill Performing Arts Center One of the region’s must-see festivals returns! Going strong for nearly 10 years, the SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL has become a Memorial Day Weekend tradition. Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, the what-a-burger cheeseburger with onion rings, fried cauliflower, fried mushrooms and two onion rings. Below, the restaurant's exterior.

Centralia's Burger Haven heavy on nostalgia By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge A mid-week Edwardsville Tiger baseball game took me to Centralia in April and an empty stomach took me on a pitstop at a Centralia staple — Donnie and Connie's Burger Haven. Burger Haven, located at 639 N. Poplar St. in Centralia, is a tribute to classic burger joints of the past, offering a nostalgic feel from when you were a kid. Places like Burger Haven are few and far between. Locally we have our own North Side Dairy Haven in Edwardsville and there's King Louie's in Wood River and a few others, but spots like Burger Haven are vastly outnumbered by fast food joints and are disappearing quickly. Burger Haven brought back memories for me of being a little kid and visiting the now defunct Dairy Palace in Bethalto with my parents after baseball practice or karate class and grabbing a footlong hot dog and a root beer float. Those times were an absolute treat and something kids today should have an opportunity to enjoy. (Man, I'm starting to sound old!) As for the legend of Burger Haven, it was originally established in 1946 as the BBQ Haven and offered carhop service in a 40-foot trailer. Donnie and Connie Cole bought the restaurant in 1975 and in 1983 the current building was constructed with two new wings added in 1986 and 1994 to give it its spacious look of today. There isn't much fancy on the

menu at Burger Haven, just classic, wholesome American fare — burgers, corn dogs, sloppy joes, grilled cheese and fish and chicken to name a few. Another treat is you won't break the bank eating at Burger Haven. I went with the go-to item on the Burger Haven menu, the what-aburger cheeseburger. The what-aburger is a carry-over item from the original owners and remains a favorite.

It's a charbroiled burger on a five-inch bun that comes with mustard, onion, pickle, lettuce and tomato and mine of course had cheese on it. I had them hold the mustard and pickles for my order. It was heaping with lettuce, tomato and onion and had a good, classic burger taste. Not a bad investment for $2.59. For my side I went with a sampler selection, ordering the breaded mix which included two cheese

sticks, breaded cauliflower, fried mushrooms and two onion rings. Everything was good, cheap and quick. Burger Haven probably isn't going to win any awards for best sandwich or anything, but it's just a relaxing, wholesome, smalltown family spot where mom and dad can take their kids on a Saturday afternoon, grab something to eat as a family and not go away broke.

July 17, 2014

As far as the ambiance and the service, it's top notch. The service is quick and friendly and the decor gives you a since of American pride, painted with a red, white and blue scheme with stars above the counter painted in an American flag theme. As for the rest of the menu, there's choices like the country burger, consisting of a thirdpound burger with cheese, bacon, barbecue sauce, mayo, onion, pickle, lettuce and tomato and the big double TD burger with thousand island dressing, cheese, onion, pickle, lettuce and tomato with two patties. Burger Haven also offers a BLT, a BBQ sandwich and a pork tenderloin, among others. The sides and specialties portion of the menu includes items like: chicken strips, tacos, homemade chili, chicken noodle soup, french fries and chili cheese fries to name a few. Get a Burger Haven meal special for as cheap as $3.19, which includes a cheeseburger, french fries and a 20-ounce drink. And of course Burger Haven offers ice cream, shakes, sundaes and floats. The shakes come in chocolate, strawberry, cherry and vanilla. You can like Burger Haven on Facebook and check out their menu and see some pictures from inside if you're interested. It's definitely a downhome place to visit when you gotta eat. It just made me feel like a grubby little snot-nosed kid again.

Dining Delights Modified foods prove confusing MARY CLARE JALONICK Associated Press WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Genetically modified foods have been around for years, but most Americans have no idea if they are eating them. The Food and Drug Administration says they don't need to be labeled, so the state of Vermont has moved forward on its own. On Thursday, Gov. Peter Shumlin signed legislation making his state the first to require labeling of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. What about the rest of the country? And does labeling matter? There's a lot of confusion about genetically modified foods and their safety. Some people feel very strongly about GMOs. Opponents, who at times have protested in the streets, say consumers have the right to know whether their food contains GMOs. The Vermont law is their first major victory. The food industry and companies that genetically engineer seeds have pushed back against the labeling laws, saying GMOs are safe and labels would be misleading. "It's really polarizing," says New York University's Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition and food studies. "There's no middle ground." A look at the debate and some of the facts about genetically modified foods: WHAT THEY ARE GMOs are not really a "thing," Nestle says, and that's hard for the average consumer to grasp. You can't touch or feel a GMO. Genetically modified foods are plants or animals that have had genes copied from other plants or animals inserted into their DNA. It's not a new idea — humans have been tinkering with genes for centuries through selective breeding. Think dogs bred to be more docile pets, cattle bred to be beefier or tomatoes bred to be sweeter. Turkeys were bred to have bigger breasts — better for Thanksgiving dinner. What's different about genetically modified or engineered foods is that the manipulation is done in a lab. Engineers don't need to wait for nature to produce a desired gene; they speed up the process by transferring a gene from one plant or animal to another.

What are the desired traits? Most of the nation's corn and soybeans are genetically engineered to resist pests and herbicides. A papaya in Hawaii is modified to resist a virus. The FDA is considering an application from a Massachusetts company to approve a genetically engineered salmon that would grow faster than traditional salmon. IN YOUR GROCERY CART Most of the genetically modified corn and soybeans are used in cattle feed, or are made into ingredients like corn oil, corn starch, high fructose corn syrup or soybean oil. Even in some of those products, the manufacturing process itself may eventually remove some of the modified genes. A few fruits and vegetables are engineered — the Hawaiian papaya and some squash and zucchini, for example. Only a small amount of sweet corn, the corn we eat, is genetically modified. But there's no genetically modified meat or fish, like the fastgrowing salmon, currently in the market for human consumption; the Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve any. THE RISKS The vast majority of scientific research has found genetically engineered foods to be generally safe. An Italian scientist's review of 10 years of research, published in 2013, concluded that the scientific research conducted so far has not detected "any significant hazard directly connected with the use of GM crops." One French research team raised safety questions, but their muchcriticized 2012 study linking genetically modified corn to rat tumors was retracted in 2013 by the scientific publisher, who cited weak evidence supporting the conclusions. Even the food police say they are safe: The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a well-known critic of food companies and artificial and unhealthy ingredients in foods, has not opposed genetically modified foods, on the basis that there's no evidence they are harmful. Though what we are eating now appears safe, the main concerns for the future would be new genetically engineered foods — from the United States or abroad — that somehow become allergenic or toxic through the engineering process.
