If your dog could talk Professional pet sitting service takes flight By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Terry Ayers is very direct when she says, "No farm animals." Any other creature, however, falls under the umbrella of what Sit. Stay. Play. professional pet sitters will care for. Ayers and her partner, Carol K o h l e r, r e c e n t l y s t a r t e d t h e business after realizing from their own experiences that pets don't need to get away from home as often as people do. So after taking all of the steps to become licensed, bonded, insured and certified, the duo is offering in-home pet care services in the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area. "We come to your home instead of you taking your animal to a shelter, which is more stressful on the animal," Kohler said. Sit. Stay. Play. offers more than just daily feeding visits. Ayers and Kohler will bring in mail, pick up newspapers, turn house lights on and off in addition to caring for pets, which includes walking and playing with those animals who enjoy such activities. And while dogs will likely be the primary recipients of care from Sit. Stay. Play., just about any animal – except farm animals – is a possibility. Ayers said the business will take care of cats, birds, guinea pigs, fish, turtles, frogs, tarantulas – just about any pet a family can own. Ay e r s a n d K o h l e r – b o t h mothers as well as entrepreneurs – have handled many different animals over the years. They know, too, that in-home pet care is as much about the pet owner as it is about the pet itself. "I think the biggest thing about having pet sitters is giving you peace of mind," Ayers said. "When we go in and make our initial visit, we'll play with the pet. Not only that, if we feel the pet is uncomfortable with us, we'll ask to come back at least one more

Sit. Stay. Play. owners Carol Kohler, left, and Terry Ayers prepare to take Ayres' dog, Belle, for a walk. time before they go on vacation. We want to make sure the pet is comfortable with us." "You think you're just going to be dealing with the animals, but really your customers are the people who have to make the decisions to let us care for their animals," Kohler said. And care is the key as it involves more than just feeding. "If a dog could talk to you, he would tell you, 'stay and play.' That's how our name came to be," Kohler said. Ayers and Kohler will tell you that they aren't anti-kennel, but they know that some pets don't like to travel and some can't. "People that have cats – cats don't want to be put in a car or put somewhere. When they go off to visit or go on vacation, (people)
don't have a place to leave their cats," Ayers said. "Small animals – guinea pigs, fish, a bird – what you do for them?" Ayers' own dog, Belle, likes as much attention as she can get and that fact is another reason this business is being launched. "There's so many dogs to take care of (at a kennel) and they take care of them well. Some dogs like Belle love individual attention and they don't get it at a kennel," Ayers said. "We'll go in and spend 30 to 45 minutes with each pet." Sit. Stay. Play. will not only interact with pets, they'll allow them the comfort of staying home. "The biggest thing is the travel trauma – they don't have to go anywhere, they don't have to leave their home," Ayers said. "Some
dogs and cats stress out more than others." Ay e r s a n d K o h l e r h a v e researched their business extensively and they know it's something needed in this area. "We know there's a demand. For people to come to your home, we know there's a demand," Kohler said. "We've been to veterinarian's offices, groomers and pet-related business in the area. Last week we went from Maryville to Collinsville, Edwardsville and Glen Carbon and dropped off our cards. "Every person we gave our information to said, 'I always have people asking.'" Ayers and Kohler both have children attending Metro East Lutheran High School. They were talking during a
football game about their pets and one thing led to another. "We were talking about how expensive it was some times to take your pets to kennels," Ayers said. "We wanted to combine our love of animals with a business we thought would succeed," Kohler said. "We're not a one person business. We can cover for each other." S i t . S t a y. P l a y. w i l l o f f e r discounts to animals adopted through the Metro East Humane Society. Ay e r s a n d K o h l e r a re s t i l l developing their Web site, but will be at the Goshen Market on July 24, distributing information on pet care and talking to pet owners. People People planner Tour of Illinois flower and wine operations set Brightflower Nursery in Stockton and Famous Fossil Winery in Cedarville are the destinations of a tour sponsored by University of Illinois Extension. The tour is scheduled for Friday, August 13, and will begin at Brightflower Nursery at 9 a.m. Jeanie McKewan and Michael Staver started Brightflower Nursery in 2006. “After working for a variety of business entrepreneurs on Chicago’s North Shore, I decided that it was time to start my own,” said McKewan, who is president of Brightflower. “I have always been involved in growing and gardening and have a master’s degree in plant pathology.” Brightflower Nursery is certified organic. McKewan said the choice to become certified was partly about nurturing the land, but also as a marketing niche. “We are small with very little capital so it is difficult to build the business. We’re far from some of our market, so delivery costs are high,” she said. Visitors will tour the greenhouse and hoop house production, the field production of cut flowers, the bouquet-building facility, and the cooler for flowers. For more about
the nursery, visit http://www. brightflowernursery.com. Mid-morning the tour will caravan to Famous Fossil Winery in Cedarville, which is owned and operated by Ken and Pam Rosmann. They began by planting the vineyard in 2004 and today have over 2,000 grapevines. The winery was opened in 2008. T h e v i n e y a r d i s c e r t i f i e d biodynamic. “Our wines are made with the minimum of handling and preservatives,” said Pam Rosmann. “We do not use any genetically modified yeasts to ferment the wine, and we use evaporated cane juice for our sweet wines.” T h e R o s m a n n s h a v e a l s o incorporated green technology in their structures. “Our building was built with maximum insulation in the walls, roof and windows,” Rosmann said. “We use a heat exchanger, and a high-velocity
heating and cooling system with ondemand hot water. Our woodwork, tasting bar, and display cabinets were grown, milled and built using local resources. All of our appliances are energy star and we use as many recycled products as we can find. We serve local foods as much as we can for our private parties and in our café.” Guests on the tour will visit the tasting room, the vineyard, and the winery operation, as well as the fossils that were discovered when the vineyard was being planted. Lunch will be served at the winery, and the tour will conclude at 2 p.m. For more about the winery, visit www.famousfossilwinery.com . A quartet for the quartet Arianna String Quartet to be featured in series at Touhill
The Arianna String Quartet (ASQ) has announced its 2010-11 St. Louis concert series. Recognized as one of America’s finest chamber ensembles, the ASQ will perform four concerts – “Death and the Maiden,” “Arianna by Request,” “Quint-Essential!” with special guest pianist Anton Nel, and “Titans of Style” – in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. Subscriptions are on sale now. Single tickets go on sale August 9. The ASQ, comprised of violinists John McGrosso and David Gillham, violist Joanna Mendoza and cellist Kurt Baldwin, has been based in St. Louis since 2000 and is the quartetin-residence at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. “The Arianna’s audience has significantly expanded over the last couple of years, leading to full and enthusiastic houses,” said John Cattanach, managing director of the Touhill. For the upcoming season, the ASQ has created the concert series with the connoisseur as well as the newcomer in mind. “Our goal in programming is to present the powerfully expressive masterpieces of the quartet literature,” said ASQ cellist Kurt Baldwin, “while simultaneously keeping the concerts new and interesting for our audience.” The ASQ kicks off its St. Louis series with “Death and the Maiden,” September 10, 2010. The evening celebrates quartets by three composers whose dramatic creations helped chart the course of classical music. Antonin Dvorak’s alluring String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op.51 presents a landscape of rolling beauty, filled with Czech folk music that sparks the imagination. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Quartet No.7 expresses the breadth of life’s jagged emotional journey in this piece dedicated to the memory of his wife. Franz Schubert’s tour de force, the Quartet in D minor,

For The Edge
The Arianna String Quartet “Death and the Maiden,” closes the program with a musical drama that captures the power and fragility of the human experience. “Arianna by Request,” October 29, 2010, the ASQ turns to its audience to choose the line up in this uniquely interactive concert e x p e r i e n c e . I n s p i re d b y t h e support of the hometown crowd, the ASQ compiled a list of 12 masterpieces from which concertgoers choose. The top-three, votegetting pieces will be performed in this concert. Patrons can go to touhill.org to vote. On March 5, 2011, Anton Nel – one of the most cherished and celebrated pianist in the world – shares the stage with the ASQ for “Quint-Essential!” This piano quintet gala concert showcases the power and intimacy of Dvorak, Elgar and Brahms. Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times hails Nel as, “An uncommonly elegant pianist.” The evening of three great piano quintets features Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op.81; Elgar ’s Piano Quintet in A
minor, Op.84; and Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op.34. The ASQ closes its 2010-11 St. Louis concert series with “Titans of Style,” May 6, 2011. It features three landmark quartets, whose innovative languages and styles forged new paths for musical expressivity. Mozart’s Quartet in A Major, K.464, is a tonally adventuresome work that sets the stage for the future of classical music. As Mozart said about this work in 1785, “Look what I could produce, if only you were ready for it.” Bela Bartok’s groundbreaking Quartet No.5 introduces a new sonic world that shows the composer at the height of his compositional genius. Finally, Claude Debussy’s exhilarating Quartet in G minor takes listeners on a nuanced odyssey through French traditions, world cultures and Debussy’s compositional ingenuity. “And as part of our Touhill concert series,” commented B a l d w i n , “ w e a re t h r i l l e d t o welcome the award-winning
Parker Quartet, January 28, 2011. They are an exciting, superb group. Augmenting our series of concerts to include other quartets from around the country, especially groups as fine as the Parker, helps enhance our audience’s chamber music experience in St. Louis.” Hailed by the New York Times as “something extraordinary” and by the Boston Globe for their “fiercely committed performances,” the Parker Quartet has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the p re e m i n e n t e n s e m b l e s o f i t s generation. The Parker Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2009-2011 Cleveland Quartet Award. Given biennially by Chamber Music America, this award honors and promotes a rising young string quartet whose artistry demonstrates t h a t i t i s i n t h e p ro c e s s o f establishing a major career. Artistic adventures Immediacy Theatre Project Presents “Drawn & Quartered”
Immediacy Theatre Project (ITP) invades a new venue as it continues its 2010 season with the Drawn and Quartered series at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South 12th St., St. Louis, MO 63118) July 30 and 31, nAugust 20 and 21, September 23 and 24, and October 29 and 30, with new plays each month. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the show starting at 8:00 pm each night. Tickets are $8 at the door. Each Drawn & Quartered offers thirty-five new two-minute plays performed in an order chosen by
the audience. The super-short plays are written by a crack team of ITP ensemble members, and they abandon many conventional theatrical elements such as character, location and suspension of disbelief. In these plays, the ensemble members portray themselves, the audience is always acknowledged, and the plays always exist exactly where they are: in an art gallery in St. Louis. Says ITP nArtistic Director Matt Heckman, “You don’t just come to Drawn & Quartered; you come to be part of it. Our audiences make this series special.” This year ’s episodes will be directed by Heckman, Director of Development Danielle Borsch and Managing Director Kyle Kratky, and 2010 marks the fifth anniversary
of Drawn & Quartered. “Although we have five years of experience at being Drawn & Quartered under our theatrical belts, the show never gets tired,” says Borsch. “It’s a different experience every single time: different plays, new commentaries on what’s going on in the world, fresh pop culture trends, and a changing order of plays that alters the plays themselves.” In honor of ITP’s five-year milestone with Drawn & Quartered, this year ’s episodes are going to have an extra-special edge. “We’re proud to announce that Drawn & Quartered has gone High Definition. We’ve always been ahead of the curve on the 3D movement – we were doing it five years ago! – but now we’re taking it further.” says Kratky.
“This year we’re going HD. The plays will feel so real you can almost touch them. In fact, you can! You can touch them.” For more venue information, please visit www.madart.com.

45 and going strong Dance St. Louis announces 2010-11 season Dance St. Louis will open its 45th season of bringing great dance of the world to St. Louis in October with one of America’s premier ballet companies, Houston Ballet, and will close the following August with the 2009 Tony Awardwinning Best Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical. “Through the year we will journey to emotions only dance can bring, with each performance from a company admired all over the world,” said Michael Uthoff, Dance St. Louis artistic & executive director. Dance St. Louis’ 2010-11 season opens October 8 and 9 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center when, as part of the first-ever American Arts Experience–St. Louis, Houston Ballet brings an intimate program of sweet and playful classical dances by George Balanchine, Houston Artistic Director Stanton Welch, and Houston Associate Choreographer Christopher Bruce. The holiday season kicks off at the Fox Theatre on December 2-5 with The Joffrey Ballet in Nutcracker at the Fox, combining dancing of “exceptional fire and exuberance” (Chicago Sun-Times), Tchaikovsky’s evergreen score played live by the Ballet Orchestra of St. Louis, luscious Victorian sets and costumes, and performances by young St. Louis-area singers and dancers. Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet comes to St. Louis for the first time at the Touhill on January 28 and 29. In just seven years, this New York-based troupe of 16 international dancers has vaulted into the front ranks with its cutting-edge repertory from Europe’s most daring choreographers. On March 11 and 12,
the monumental Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox on March 11 and 12 for a mixed program blending modern dance and African American spirit, climaxed by the celebration of 50 years of its signature masterwork, Revelations. On March 2527, the Fox explodes with the ever-popular international percussion sensation STOMP, copresented by the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. On April 8 and 9, the Touhill blossoms into phantasmagoric visions of Mother Nature with MOMIX in Botanica. Creatures real and mythical materialize thanks to props, costumes, lighting, and the impossibly nimble dancerillusionists. On May 26, 27 and 28, Dance St. Louis and the Touhill co-present SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL 2011, the fourth annual Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza of 30 dance companies from across the Midwest and beyond, for three completely different programs over three nights at only $10 per night.
The season concludes on August 10-28 a t t h e F o x T h e a t re w i t h B i l l y E l l i o t t h e Musical, co-presented with the U.S. Bank Broadway Series. Based on the smash hit movie about a coal miner ’s son who discovers a surprising passion for ballet, Billy Elliot is the winner of ten 2009 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Choreography for Peter Darling’s dances, with music by Elton John. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. For more information, call the Dance St. Louis box office at 314-534-6622 or visit dancestlouis.org. Single tickets for Houston Ballet, Nutcracker at the Fox, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and MOMIX in Botanica go on sale September 7, Tuesday after Labor Day. SPRING TO DANCE FESTIVAL 2011 goes on sale in Spring 2011. On-sale dates for single tickets to STOMP and Billy Elliot the Musical are TBA.

Glen Ed Pharmacy is a new, independent pharmacy located in Ginger Creek. It is locally owned by Gary Ceretto, RPh and Rod Haselhorst, RPh, and is both a traditional and specialty pharmacy that was designed to meet the needs of many different patients. The pharmacy is a member of Health Mart and PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) the recognized leader in pharmaceutical compounding training.
He is also a member of MEPA and IPHA. These two exceptional pharmacists came together to create Glen Ed Pharmacy, a very well-rounded pharmacy. The idea was to design a pharmacy where patients would receive the “family-like” service while also having the ability to fill almost any prescription for any patient.

purpose of compounding: a certified sterile lab and a non-sterile lab. Glen Ed Pharmacy is the only retail pharmacy in the Metro-East with a sterile lab and utilizes it to make compounds such as injectables or eye drops that require a sterile environment during preparation. The non-sterile lab is used to make medications in the form of creams, ointments, shampoos, suppositories, lollipops, troches/ lozenges, oral disintegrating tablets, etc. Both labs make prescriptions for humans and animals. The last and most important factor to Glen Ed Pharmacy is the service. Because it is a locally owned pharmacy, the staff goes out of their way to help the patient in any way possible. Patients can make requests as to what is stocked on the shelves and can have anything ordered at no additional charge. The pharmacy offers free local delivery to any patient and will also ship medications upon request. Glen Ed Pharmacy also has a drive thru for patients to conveniently pick up and drop off prescriptions. All of these services wrapped up into one pharmacy is what makes an independent pharmacy the top choice for many patients. Glen Ed Pharmacy is located at 1 Ginger Creek Meadows in Glen Carbon. Eckert’s A new era begins in Belleville By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The peaches are piled high. The black berries are so ripe they could burst. An Eckert’s employee rushes by to run out to the field to pick some green tomatoes at the special request of a customer wanting to make fried green tomatoes. There is a mixture of many voices in the air as people push their carts past all the fresh produce, bakery goods, and more. They are shopping at Eckert’s Country Store. Why is that so special? Because it is the first week of the grand opening of their brand new $5 million, 22,000 square-foot country store. The previous store was built in 1927, and although it had many renovations over the years, including electricity and indoor plumbing, it was a favorite stopping point for locals to pick up some fresh produce and maybe a freshly baked pie. Although this new store brings a whole new look to the country store business, it doesn’t change what the Eckert’s family was doing in the previous location. “This store basically has all
the same products and produce as the previous store. We are just able to display it better, stock more and customers have much more space to move around,” said Chris Eckert, president of Eckert’s, Inc. “We didn’t want to create the typical grocery store atmosphere. You aren’t going to find toilet paper and cereal on our shelves. What you will find is locally grown produce, meat, cheeses, wines, and a number of other great items.” The well-lit facility incorporates a greatly expanded wine area. There is a temperature controlled wine room, along with a number of wine racks that house vino from all over the United States, including Missouri and Illinois. If you are confused about the wine selection or looking for a certain kind, there is an attendant on duty to assist you. The store is definitely a far cry from the roadside stand that Alvin O. Eckert opened 100 years ago. However, the family values that were at the heart of the Eckert’s farm then are still what the Eckert family stands for today. “Creating Family Memories” is the focus and mission of the Eckert’s
family and their employees. As a reminder and a welcome, this is the statement displayed across the side of the building, adjacent to the customer parking lot. “We have fantastic employees who are committed to this place. We are all family. It is very important that people know what a valuable asset our employees are. Many of them sacrificed their July 4th holiday to get this place open and we are very grateful and fortunate to have them,” said Chris Eckert. Chris’ wife, Angie Eckert, is the Vice President of Retail Operations. She has been one of the key figures in getting the store set up and everything in place. Chris Eckert said he and Angie and the rest of their family felt very blessed to have such a great crew of people to help them create such a wonderful family atmosphere. “Everyone knows Eckert’s for picking apples and peaches, we just really wanted to expand on that mission so people can enjoy all the food products that we offer. We are providing as much locally grown and produced food as possible,” said Chris Eckert. “We find guests in general enjoy locally produced food simply because it just tastes better.” Eckert’s offers a full deli of fresh
sliced meats and cheeses along with hot ready-to-serve items that customers can stop by and grab for dinner. There is a full service meat counter offering some of the freshest meats available. Eckert’s has partnered with a couple of ranches and all meat is 100 percent U.S. raised, and the majority is locally raised. You can even call ahead with your meat or deli orders and they will have every thing packaged and ready to go when you arrive. This week marks the peach picking start. Although the store is a great addition to the Belleville farm, there are still plenty of “pickyour-own” peaches and black berries. Of course the apples and pumpkins will be ready for picking this fall. Make sure to put a trip to
Eckert’s on your agenda, maybe even make it a regular date. There is a great selection of products that are grown and/or prepared with lots of care and love. One other addition to the new store is the full service teaching kitchen. This will be the place for cooking classes for both adults and children, and wine classes. There is a complete schedule of classes available at the store or by signing up for their e-mail newsletter on their Web site. Eckert’s Country Store is located on the farm in Belleville, at 951 South Greenmount Road. Their phone number is 800-745-0513. They have other farm locations in Milstadt and Grafton. You can read more about the farm or learn about cooking and wine classes at www. eckerts.com.

We were voted #1 for 2008
Fighting fat with summer dishes NEW YORK (AP) – Creamed vegetable dishes are delicious, comforting classics. But it can be a bit troubling to take nature’s healthiest foods and essentially nestle them in a pool of fat. Many recipes for creamed corn or spinach call for using a traditional white sauce made from whole milk thickened with a butter and flour roux. Others are primarily reduced heavy cream and sour cream, which don’t have a stellar nutritional profile, either. Yet creamy lower-fat vegetable dishes can be every bit as tasty and satisfying as their full-fat cousins. One way to go is to make a low-fat white sauce by heating 3/4 cup of skim or low-fat milk until steaming. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour with 1/4 cup of cold milk. Stir the flour mixture into the hot milk and cook, whisking constantly, until thick, 2 to 3 minutes. Once thickened, add 1/4 cup of any extra-sharp sharp cheese (use full fat, because with its superior flavor even a little will go a long way) and a bit of Dijon mustard to make a cheesy sauce, or add herbs and spices, such as snipped chives and a pinch of nutmeg, to make a more traditional white sauce. Mix the sauce with any cooked vegetables you like. You also can thicken a cup of skim or low-fat milk by stirring in 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch as it heats, then seasoning in the same way as when thickened with flour. some cornstarch as a thickener, but also gets much of its velvety texture by pureeing two-thirds of the corn in a blender. A mere teaspoon of butter goes a long way in adding a familiar richness to the complex blend of sweet and spicy flavors. Look for smoked paprika in the spice section of most grocers or in a pinch, just use plain paprika instead. SMOKY CREAMED CORN WITH GREEN CHILIES Start to finish: 20 minutes Servings: 4 1 teaspoon butter or canola oil 4-ounce can diced green chilies 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 3 cups fresh corn kernels, divided (about 7 cobs) 1 1/4 cups skim milk 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon salt In a medium saucepan over medium, heat the oil. Add the chilies and paprika and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a blender, place 2 cups of the corn, the milk, cornstarch and salt. Blend until smooth. Transfer the puree to the saucepan with the chilies and add the remaining 1 cup of corn. Cook over mediumhigh, stirring constantly, until the mixture simmers and thickens and the corn is tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts, but Bobby’s has a following in Madison County that most people know. Great custard, great carmel apples, lots of selections and more.
July 22, 2010
Strawanna and the Bobby’s Turtle are some of the favorite selections. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to
LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover!
St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is
something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java.
Business Is Booming!! But… Supply Shortage Drives Local Car Dealer To Pay-Off Consumer Auto Loans And Leases Early To Keep Inventory Full
EDWARDSVILLE – Good news for people who are tired of their ride: Koetting Ford needs used cars and is willing to do just about anything to get them…including helping you to eliminate the remaining payments on your current lease or loan. Dealers nationwide have experienced a spike in sales recently, but manufacturers have slowed production to a near standstill and President Obama’s Cash For Clunkers program removed 690,000 vehicles from the road. This all means there are not enough vehicles “for sale” right now to keep up the current sales pace. One local car dealer, Marty McCabe from Koetting Ford, invented a unique solution to the problem. “Our business can’t afford to wait for this problem to run its course. We need to keep selling cars this month. But with only a 56-day supply on-hand nationally, we need to do something pretty drastic. There are thousands of people in this town who want a nicer, newer car but are still making payments. Then there’s me, who needs used cars. So…how about I help you handle the remaining payments and you get a better car right now?”
A
t most dealerships, the credit score matters more than the person. But our relationships with many flexible lenders allows us to match your credit application with the lender most likely to approve you…a bank that will take the person into consideration, not just the credit score. Heck, just looking at the credit scores is what got us into this mess in the first place. It’s high time to put the person first, in my opinion. That’s how we operate here. Marty McCabe
This unusual proposal makes sense because rather than removing a car from the inventory at the time of purchase, you actually replenish the supply when you trade in. Marty McCabe says that each transaction has a unique “Inventory Footprint” with some transactions resulting in -1, some in 0, and some in +1. According to McCabe, “This month we’re looking for 0’s and +1’s, which means we’ll buy your current vehicle even if you don’t buy one from us and we will help you pay off your loan or lease early, just so we can keep our inventory from running dry.”
How Long Will This Last?
When asked about timing, McCabe explained, “This problem should only last about a month. I expect the supply to level out by July as the manufacturers pick up the pace and other dealers’ sales slow down. But we only have 12 months in a year, and I’m not willing to go dark for one of them.” Automotive experts indicate that this inventory correction could last anywhere between 10 and 45 days. The offer to help you eliminate the remaining payments on your loan or lease is good until June 30, 2010 or until the inventory supply returns…whichever comes first.
A Trader’s Market?
“It’s a lot like a perfect storm,” says McCabe. “Nobody could have predicted it, and it only comes around every 10 or 15 years. Suppliers have been slowing down consistently over the past few years. But nobody expected so many sales to be made so quickly in the first part of 2010. Until it’s resolved, this ‘perfect storm’ creates what’s known as a ‘Trader’s Market’ which places upward pressure on
Edwardsville residents are lining up at Koetting Ford to have their car loans or leases paid off early (sometimes YEARS early) and then driving home in a nicer, newer vehicle long before they thought they could. National auto supply shortages are forcing Koetting Ford to overpay for trades, resulting in early pay-offs. This rare ‘trader’s market’ will only last through the end of the month. Call or visit Koetting Ford at 3465 Progress Pkwy., Granite City 62040 (Rt 3 at Pontoon Rd. next to Granite City WalMart)!
the value of your trade. That extra value gives me the leverage I need to negotiate favorable buy out terms with your original bank.”
The Banks Want Out
To make the timing even better, it seems that some banks are anxious to eliminate loans made between two and five years ago. “There was a lending frenzy during that time that caused many banks to make deals they wish they wouldn’t have made (now known as toxic assets). Now they’re trying to clean their books up…and many are more than happy to be finished with loans that aren’t yet paid off. This works in your favor.” “It truly is a good opportunity for all involved: the bank gets their money, I get the inventory I need, and you get the nicer, newer car you want. There are no losers in this deal!” trumpeted McCabe.
than the person. But our relationships with many flexible lenders allows us to match your credit application with the lender most likely to approve you…a bank that will take the person into consideration, not just the credit score. Heck, just looking at the credit scores is what got us into this mess in the first place. It’s high time to put the person first, in my opinion. That’s how we operate here.”
What Next?
Marty McCabe expects a heavy response to this offer, so please call ahead and make an appointment to have your current loan or lease evaluated. Walk-ins will be accepted, though may require a short wait. If lines are busy, please keep calling. Ask The Dealer For The People:
Q: Who is this right for? A: This is good for anyone who is currently making a car payment but would like to switch to a nicer, newer car and stop making his or her current payments. Q: Will there be a negative impact on my credit score? A: No. Your current lease or loan will be paid off and there will be no negative consequences. If anything, it could help your score because you’ve successfully paided of the loan or lease. Q: What will my new payment be? A: That depends on what car you choose next. Often we can keep your payment the same and sometimes the payment is actually a bit lower. Imagine driving a nicer newer car with a lower payment. Q: How much will I need for a down payment? A: There is no fee for us to evaluate your trade-in and eliminate your payments. And many of the banks we work with offer no to low down payment options. They’re certainly original Royal Accessories spices up household chores By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Everyone thinks about having that breakthrough idea that they can market and become independently wealthy – maybe a beauty product, a new tool, or something for your pet. But few ever act on those ideas. Created in 2003, Royal Accessories, LLC, the parent company of His and Her Majesty’s Accessories had the idea to take everyday items and add a glamorous touch to them. Why? Well, doesn’t it feel much more elegant to wash the dishes or clean the toilet if you have a pair of gloves with faux fur trim or pearls or crystal detailing? How about a faux fur apron. Maybe you think that the days of wearing an apron are passe’, but you will have a whole new outlook when you don a faux leopard fur apron to entertain your guests. Royal Accessories realized that in today’s competitive marketplace, they needed to stand apart, offer original designs, high quality workmanship and prices suitable for self indulgence as well as gift giving. They have managed to accomplish that task. Their gloves have donned the hands of the “Desperate Housewives,” making it glamourous to clean your house. They have been featured in “Domino” magazine and in New York’s Daily News. If you like the aprons, what about a duster to match. Along with their line of faux fur aprons, you can get a matching duster that
is sure to complete the ensemble. Have you ever needed a unique gift for the person who has everything? This might be just what you are looking for. Or how about that person who turns up their nose when you mention cleaning? This might just be the ticket for a cute gift to change their mind about the dirty job. These items make fantastic bridesmaids gifts too! I f y o u a re o n e w h o d r y c l e a n s y o u r garments or has a college student who needs a laundry bag, Royal Accessories not only has a selection of luxury bags to carry the unmentionables in, but they will custom embroider them. Maybe a monogrammed dry cleaning bag for the guy or gal that is tough to buy for. Royal Accessories uses quality fabrics and the embellishments – faux fur, rhinestones
and luxury trim – are all hand sewn. Laundry and shoe bags are lined in 100 percent cotton. The “luxury collection” is lined in charmeuse and skillfully embroidered. Each season they introduce new updated fabrics, designs and new products to keep their line fresh. They continue to set standards for elegant gift giving and receiving. They have the ability and capacity to provide custom design and production to meet corporate gift giving as well as private labeling needs. All of their products feature original designs and are made in the United States of America. Family Focus Parents go electronic By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press Parents who want a way to talk so little ears can’t hear have moved beyond s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g in favor of a new kid-proof system: the text message. E-mail, text and instant messaging have become the go-to technology for parents on family outings or at the end of a long day, when mom’s chilling on the couch in front of the TV and dad’s reading in the bedroom more than a whisper away. “There was a time when I would get really upset if I was IMed from another room in the house. Now it’s a complete parental survival tool,” says KellyAnn Bonnell, whose kids are 10 and 15. Tammy Gold, a parenting coach in Short Hills, N.J., says phones and online tools are particularly important in tight spaces like apartments, where there are fewer secluded spots, and especially with older kids who stay up as late or later than the grown-ups. “I’ve had parents who say it’s weeks before they can speak,” she says. “Parents these days put ‘sex’ into each other’s phones or else it won’t happen.”
Parents in two-BlackBerry households are using the company’s free text service and relying on the messaging features on Facebook since they’re logging on frequently anyway. Others have come up with languages all their own. “Should we partake in a visit to the place with aluminum obstacles or cages containing mammals?” Greg Abel and his wife value their synonyms — that’s the playground and the zoo — when their kids are listening, especially when more open discussion would likely lead to a sibling spat or major disappointment. “We have a bright 5-year-old who can spell, so we can’t spell out words in front of him,” said Abel, from Baltimore, Md. “If we’re trying to decide if we should give him ice cream, but only after his younger brother has gone to bed, we might say, ‘Should we give the elder a frozen confection?”’ With a 2-year-old, Melissa Kaupke in Nashville, Tenn., can still spell that and lots of other things, but she wishes her husband was on board with her own parents’ secret language of “Ob.” You know the one — http://bit.ly/az19n4 — it sounds like you’ve got rocks in your mouth.

Some clothes a vacation all their own NEW YORK (AP) — Missed the boat on that great getaway? Put on the right clothes and you still can bring a bit of the beach to your summer. OK, so it’s not exactly the same as a jaunt to the Greek isles or Hawaii, but you can infuse a hint of exotic escapism into your life with sun-kissed-colored T-shirts, shell-like embellishments, coralshaped jewelry and rope-handled handbags. Surfer styles in oversized prints and Neoprene fabrics take you to the shores of Southern California or the Hamptons in New York. “When you see some clothes, you say, ‘vacation,”’ says designer Tommy Hilfiger. “Some businesses are built entirely on occasion or vacation clothes. The guys who w e a r To m m y B a h a m a s h i r t s envision themselves on vacation when they’re going to work. ... We do yachtsman clothes for people in landlocked states — and we can sell them in the middle of winter when people can’t wait for the idea of putting on lightweight clothes and that beachy feeling.” For those more interested in a journey to a faraway land, wooden beads, mirrored baubles and safari styles suggest somewhere more exotic. “ ‘ Tr a n s p o r t i n g ’ i t e m s l e t s consumers dream. It’s almost like playing dress-up or pretend,” says Ed Bucciarelli, CEO and president of retailer Henri Bendel. “It’s fun. It almost allows you to be another person and project a different persona — one that’s visited all these fabulous places around the world.” Actually having been to the place is icing on the cake, Bucciarelli says, but there’s still an emotional connection to the idea of a location you’ve always dreamed of visiting. “As we’re creating product, we think of how we can allow customers to emote and dream. The really far away places — the places few people get to go to — are the ones that often get the best reaction. People really dream about going to Bali, Fiji or Africa.” Hence the tribal display earlier this summer in Bendel’s Fifth Avenue flagship. The transporting vibe works in other seasons, too.

“Knight and Day”
Introducing an exciting new talent: Tom Cruise. Sure, we know Tom Cruise after his three decades in the business. We know way too much about Tom Cruise, actually, thanks to his well-documented off-screen antics the past few years. “Knight and Day” is a refreshing reminder, though, of why he is a superstar: He has that undeniable charisma about him and he really can act, something for which he doesn’t always get the credit he deserves. Here, he plays a Vintage Tom Cruise Role: He gets to be charming but also toy with the idea that he might be a little nuts. As secret agent Roy Miller, he has that twinkle in his eye and that sexy little smile but he’s also strangely calm in the middle of elaborate car chases and shootouts — relaxed, articulate and abidingly courteous when most mortals would be freaking out. That’s part of the fun of the character and the movie as a whole, that contradiction. Cruise’s presence also helps keep James Mangold’s film light, breezy and watchable when the action — and the story itself — spin ridiculously out of control. Cruise and Cameron Diaz make an oddly appealing pair as a (possibly) rogue spy and the innocent woman he must now protect. But the romance between them feels forced and is one of the movie’s chief weaknesses. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of action violence throughout, and brief strong language. RUNNING TIME: 109 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Despicable Me”
Despite some clever moments and colorful characters, this could have been called “Forgettable Me” instead. It has a pleasingly off-kilter look about it — the work of a French animation house — a strong voice cast led by Steve Carell as the bumbling bad guy Gru and a delightfully cruel sense of humor. It’s actually darker and odder than most familyfriendly animated fare, and that’s a good thing — until it goes predictably soft and gooey at the end, that is. But what’s mainly missing from this first animated 3-D offering from Universal is story. There’s just nothing to “Despicable Me,” and that becomes glaringly obvious when you compare it to this summer’s “Toy Story 3” in particular and Pixar movies in general, where story is paramount. Here, the look of the film is what makes it stand out amid the glut of summer cartoons. The characters are cute in their weirdness, down to Gru’s

shaggy, growling dog. Even the trio of spunky orphans crucial to Gru’s diabolical plan to steal the moon are adorable in an unusual way. The scene-stealers, though, are the Minions: tiny, yellow, pill-shaped creatures with one eye and sometimes two who carry out Gru’s evil deeds. At least, they try. Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews are among the supporting cast. RATED: PG for rude humor and mild action. In 2-D and 3-D. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“The Girl Who Played with Fire”
This sequel feels like a hasty knockoff compared to the adaptation of the first book in Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trilogy, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” The story falls back heavily on action from the far-superior first film, and the secrets revealed about its heroine’s dark and violent past are not exactly earthshaking. Yet it’s hard to go wrong with a psycho-genius such as Lisbeth Salander, again played with pitiless, unbridled courage and savagery by Noomi Rapace. This is a woman who will not back down from the harshest of obstacles or the most frightening of adversaries. So she’s not going to let a little thing like a weak followup story completely spoil the party. While uneven, repetitive and occasionally nonsensical, the movie still offers a fair dose of suspense and action for those who can stomach its brutal violence. The story casts Lisbeth as prime suspect in several murders and sheds light on some nasty mystery men from her past. Michael Nyqvist reprises his role as Lisbeth’s journalist ally. RATED: R for brutal violence including a rape, some strong sexual content, nudity and language. RUNNING TIME: 129 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“The Kids Are All Right”
The two kids of the film — teen siblings getting to know
their biological dad — are great — smart, mature, highminded, well-adjusted. The three adults, played with fierce heart and a genuine sense of well-meaning inadequacy by Annette Bening, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, are a mess. Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko’s scenario is a bit forced — repressed lesbian parents forced into contact with the carefree sperm donor who fathered their children. The mayhem that ensues strains credibility here and there. Yet Cholodenko (“High Art,” “Laurel Canyon”) and her cast turn what could have been an utterly artificial story into a warm, funny, sharptongued and broiling examination of the volatility underlying even the happiest of families. Bening and Moore play a cozy couple whose 18-year-old (Mia Wasikowska) and 15-year-old (Josh Hutcherson) turn the household upside-down after they contact the anonymous donor (Ruffalo) their moms chose to sire them. The performances, particularly Bening’s, deserve a close look from awards voters come Oscar season. RATED: R for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some teen drug and alcohol use. RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Predators”
This, the third “Predator” film (there have also been two “Predator vs. Alien” spinoffs), opens with Adrien Brody in free-fall. His parachute barely opens in time, and he crashes hard onto the floor of a jungle. Other mercenaries follow from the sky like Wile E. Coyotes. Bugs Bunny cartoons, though, have more complex narratives than this franchise reboot, directed by Nimrod Antal (“Armored”) and originally written by Robert Rodriguez. Our gang of warriors (predators themselves) eventually deduce that they’ve been dropped on another planet as little more than game for the lurking predators, those dreadlocked monsters who bleed glow-stick green. The “most dangerous game” thrill is so much the center of the “Predator” series that there’s almost nothing else to it. Why bother with silly things like plausibility when your trademark climax is your star covering himself in mud? With Topher Grace and Walton Goggins enlivening things, and Laurence Fishburne in a Col. Kurtz-like cameo. RATED: R for strong creature violence and gore, and pervasive language. RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Movies “The Last Airbender” sets up sequels By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press “The Last Airbender” is a joyless, soulless, muddled mess, but the worst part of all doesn’t come until the very end. That’s when it makes the clear suggestion that two more such movies are in store for us. Hopefully, that won’t happen. Based on the Nickelodeon animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this live-action fantasy adventure has epic scope and soaring ambitions, exotic locations and a cast of thousands, but manages to get everything wrong on every level. It is yet another misstep for writer-director M. Night Shyamalan, whose career has been steadily on the decline since the marvel of “The Sixth Sense” (although “Signs,” from 2002, tends to be underappreciated). A 2-D movie converted to 3-D, “The Last Airbender” often has a smudged and blurry look about it, as if there’s some kind of schmutz on your clunky plastic glasses. It’s bad enough that this is one of those glossy CGI monstrosities, utterly divorced from anything resembling reality; transferred needlessly to 3-D, it’s just plain ugly. This is especially true during moments of darkness or scenes that take place at night — and that’s a problem, since a lot of pivotal stuff takes place at night. At least, one can surmise as much. The script is so incomprehensible, it’s often difficult to follow, despite several instances of characters stopping whatever they’re doing to explain what’s going on. Then there’s the acting, which can charitably be described as stiff — although Noah Ringer, the young Chosen One at the center of the film’s mythology, has a certain likable spunkiness about him. Too

In this film publicity image released by Paramount, Dev Patel plays Prince Zuko in a scene from “The Last Airbender.” bad he’s called on to say and do such ridiculous things. At the film’s start, the world has been at war for nearly 100 years, with the Fire Nation trying to take over the other nations of Air, Water and Earth. The people who live in these tribes can manipulate or “bend” their respective elements: hurl giant blobs of water or zap someone with a wave of flames. It’s like an elaborate game of rock-
paper-scissors, though it’s hard to tell which bendy skill is preferable; they all seem kind of lame, with Earth being the most cumbersome one. Apparently, no one knows how to bend air anymore because the Fire Nation warlords eradicated everyone with that skill — except one person, a boy named Aang (Ringer), who arrives one day in a block of ice with his hulking,
six-legged bison buddy. A young waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her older brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone, who plays the vampire Jasper in the “Twilight” movies), discover Aang and realize he may be the prophesied Avatar who can control all four elements and unite all four nations. Katara and Sokka promise to protect Aang from the various villains who are out to get him;
this is a good thing, because at least it gives them something to do. They’d be totally bereft of personality otherwise. There’s Prince Zuko (“Slumdog M i l l i o n a i re ” s t a r D e v P a t e l ) , v e n g e f u l s o n o f t h e p o w e rhungry Fire Lord Ozai (Cliff Curtis); Zuko’s uncle and coconspirator Iroh (Shaun Toub); and unscrupulous military man Commander Zhao (Aasif Mandvi).
In Hollywood, it pays to be predictable LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s summertime at the movies, the season of getting-to-knowyou-all-over-again as audiences reacquaint themselves with old screen pals such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, Iron Man, Shrek and that Karate Kid. Yet new ideas occasionally pop up even in Hollywood, the place that thrives on sequels, remakes, spinoffs and adaptations based on best-selling novels, TV shows, comic books or toys. Among this summer’s handful of original stories are Tom Cruise’s “Knight and Day,” Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” and Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Inception,” from “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan. With old standbys such as “Sex and the City 2,” ‘’Robin Hood” and “The A-Team” falling short of box-office expectations, fresh concepts play a bigger role in determining the success of Hollywood’s summer. “Inception” in particular has the

industry and fans captivated, coming from a filmmaker with a track record for blockbuster entertainment that’s also bold and smart. Starring DiCaprio as a man using technology to sneak into people’s dreams and steal their ideas, “Inception” arrives in theaters July 17 with the best buzz for an original story since James Cameron’s “Avatar” last December. At $2.7 billion worldwide, “Avatar” leads the box-office charts, hurtling past “Harry Potter,” ‘’Spider-Man” and other franchise adaptations. “I would like to say we were very encouraged by the success of ‘Avatar ’,” Nolan said with a big laugh. F o r m a n y f a n s , “ Av a t a r ” w a s a s groundbreaking a movie experience as one of the prime cinema adventures of Nolan’s boyhood, “Star Wars.” “That was an entire world that didn’t exist
anywhere else before. It only existed in that movie, and then your brain lived in it for a couple of hours, and it stuck with you,” Nolan said. “Ever since I saw that film, whether I knew it or not, my ambition has been to give the audience that kind of experience,” Nolan continued. “To create a world that they hadn’t expected before and hadn’t seen before and let them lose themselves in it. ... There’s a huge advantage of jumping into something original that can be anything.” So why does Hollywood keep coming back to the same old things? Simple. It pays better. Most of the movies that draw colossal audiences are based on something that existed before. Familiarity sometimes can breed contempt as audiences tire of characters, but it’s generally easier to get fans to buy tickets for the latest in a continuing saga.
Studios are not likely to change their ways unless they sense that audiences would rather see new things over the tried and true. “It really is up to the audience and critics. A lot of people jump on Hollywood for that, but the truth is, if they’ll come, we’ll make them,” said producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the toyinspired “Transformers” flicks and Jolie’s upcoming spy thriller “Salt.” “The audience leads us where we’re going to go. Every once and a while, we get ahead of the audience,” said di Bonaventura, who as an executive at Warner Bros. oversaw another original idea with the sci-fi sensation “The Matrix.” ‘’There was no indication the audience wanted that kind of movie, yet when we delivered it, it was clear they did. ... It’s a scary thing to take on the unfamiliar, knowing the audience has embraced the familiar so strongly.”

Recreation Program offers novices a chance at camping AFTON, Minn. (AP) — Out in the woods, miles away from the sounds of televisions and air conditioners, it's easy to spot camping novices like Maxine Hall. "Whoa, there's a really big spider there! Can you make sure it won't get in?" Hall asks a Conservation Corps Minnesota volunteer who shows her how to pitch her tent. "That's a Daddy Long Legs," volunteer Brent Gerike replies. "They're harmless." "Can we take bets to see if she makes it through the night?" another camping novice asks. Everyone laughs. Such moments will be common at state parks across Minnesota this summer, as a new program teaches families the skills needed to enjoy one of the state's traditional pastimes. Among the list of activities on the two-day agenda: learning how to set up camp, identify poison ivy and start a campfire. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources tested the program last year, and officials decided to launch an expanded version this summer. The goal is to introduce families to the outdoors in a supportive environment so they develop an appreciation for the state's natural areas and pass it on to younger generations. During a recent "I Can Camp" session at Afton State Park, five families — including Hall and her 5year-old son Langston — were eager to learn from Gerike and the other workshop leader, Brian Hubbard. Among the participants were a mother and daughter, a dad and three kids taking Mom on her firstever camping trip, and a family of six that shops at REI — but only for certain things. "We get water bottles and shoes there," said Samara Postuma, of St. Michael, who saw an ad for "I Can Camp" while at the outdoors store, which donated tents, stoves and air
mattresses for the program. Postuma had gone camping as a child, but her husband Jeff and four children ages 19 months to 11 years had never been camping before. "We wanted to do something like this, but we didn't really have the courage before now," Jeff Postuma said. B u i l d i n g c onfidence among parents is one of the program's goals, said Courtland Nelson, director of the DNR Parks and Trails Division. "There's some fear of people being in the out-of-doors. It has to do with a new setting, it has to do with maybe some stories that have been embellished into urban legends over the years," Nelson said. "It's just new territory for people." Pulling people with limited camping experience together makes the atmosphere less intimidating, Nelson said. Participants pay a fee of $55 per family, which includes the use of equipment, a state park vehicle pass and an overnight stay in the park. It also includes camping instruction and activities like fishing and geocaching. Attendance has ranged from two to about 40 during the first 10 sessions of the program, and DNR officials expect attendance will rise as more people hear about it. The program has 30 sets of camping gear with each set able to accommodate up to six people. There are 28 more workshops this summer, and many still have openings, Nelson said. Besides the participant fees, funding for "I Can Camp" is raised through sales tax money from the Legacy Amendment. As a new program, it's unclear whether it will be successful enough to become a permanent offering, especially as the state faces another budget deficit. Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer has questioned whether tax dollars should go toward a similar program
— one that teaches women outdoors skills. But Nelson said the program is worthwhile and expects the DNR will offer it again next year. Studies have shown young people are spending more time on the Internet or in front of a TV and less time outdoors — a troubling trend for a state with long-held outdoors traditions. "We are achieving what we hoped, which is new folks in the out-ofdoors," he said. Gerike said giving families a break from their busy routines can help them see the benefits of outdoor activities. "When you get out and children have the opportunity to use their creativity and to use their imagination with the world around them, it's really quite a powerful thing," he said. "I think people see that and understand that when they get outside." The program is also a chance for Gerike and other young college graduates to gain job and leadership experience. Gerike's involvement in the program is part of his Americorps volunteer year with the Conservation Corps. He's enjoyed teaching others so that they might like camping as much as he does. "Some of my fondest memories from childhood were camping with my family," Gerike said. During the camping workshop at Afton, Gerike tells the novices they have nothing to fear. "We're here to help guide you in your learning process," Gerike says. "Come to us with questions, even if it's the middle of the night." Hall, of Belle Plaine, tells him she'll definitely have questions. She grew up in inner-city Detroit and has been camping twice. "But it didn't work," she said. "I'm here with an open mind," Hall said, adding that Langston has
been begging to go camping ever since his preschool had a "camping
day" two years ago. "I'm all for my kid being well rounded."
