ick off your Sunday shoes, and put on some sneakers. July is National Park and Recreation Month, which gives everyone an excuse to get moving. Americans are fond of the outdoors, after all, and it’s evident in the amount of greenbacks they invest on green space. In 2014, the most populous U.S. cities collectively spent more than $6.4 billion on parks and recreation.
And those cities should expect a handsome return on that investment. Neighborhood parks a re i n s t ru m e n t a l t o b u i l d i n g community cohesion, boosting property values, improving public health and reducing pollution. In Washington, for instance, close proximity to a park increases a home’s value by 5 percent. And neighborhood parks in Sacramento, Calif., contribute an estimated savings of nearly $20 million on health care costs. But the term “parks and recreation” encompasses far more than just park facilities and exercise. In this study, we also consider those whose favorite pastime may be exploring museums, going to concerts or even attending food festivals, all of which contribute to the overall well-being of a city. To highlight the benefits of public spaces and recreational activities to consumers and the local economy, Wal l et H ub c omp a re d t h e 1 0 0 largest U.S. cities across 27 key metrics. In each city, we examined basic costs, the quality of parks, the accessibility of entertainment and recreational facilities as well as the climate. To find the best and worst cities for recreation, WalletHub compared the 100 most populated U.S. cities across four key dimensions, including: 1) Entertainment &
Recreational Facilities, 2) Costs, 3) Quality of Parks and 4) Climate. We then identified 27 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Please note that “city” refers to city proper and excludes surrounding metro areas. St. Louis finished eighth among the 100 ranked cities earning fourth place for entertainment and recational facilites, 29th place
for recreation costs, 84th place for quality of parks and 94th place for climate. In particular, St. Louis ranked second nationally in terms of music venues per capita. Overall, Kansas City ranked 23rd and Chicago 54th. Methodology: Entertainment & Recreational Facilities – Total weight: 10

*Accreditation means that a school has met national sandards of educational performance which have been established by an impartial nongovernmental agency. The accrediting schools by professional, national, and regional associations of like schools (schools with similar objectives and subject content), has long characterized the American educational scene. Through the years, accreditation of schools has been the most authoritative and reliable index of a school’s concern for integrity toward its students and quality education.

Religion Religion briefs Touting progress, Obama says Islamic State is losing ground
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the Islamic State's efforts to inspire and win recruits can only be defeated with Muslim help. Flanked by top military commanders at the Pentagon Monday, Obama said, "It's going to be up to Muslim communities, including scholars and clerics, to keep rejecting warped interpretations of Islam, and to protect their sons and daughters from recruitment." The president portrayed the U.S.-led coalition as gaining ground in a long fight against the Islamic State, which he described as a nimble and opportunistic enemy. But Obama stressed that the U.S. is not at war with Islam. Instead, he said, "We're fighting terrorists who distort Islam and whose victims are mostly Muslims." The president said patriotic Muslim Americans are "partners in keeping our country safe."

Pope presses environment message in bio-diverse Ecuador
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Pope Francis is challenging Latin America's youth to take up his environmental protection campaign, saying the defense of God's creation isn't just a recommendation but a requirement. Francis' appeal, delivered at Quito's Catholic University, is particularly relevant for Ecuador, a Pacific nation that is home to one of the world's most species-diverse ecosystems in the Galapagos Islands and Amazon rain forest, but is also an OPEC country heavily dependent on oil extraction. Francis told students and professors that God gave humanity the Earth not only to cultivate, but to care for — a message contained in his encyclical on the environment. Francis on Tuesday began his last full day in Ecuador with an open-air Mass that drew more than 1 million people. In his homily, Francis urged Latin Americans to channel the same urgency that brought them independence from

Low turnout marks anti-gay demonstration in Kenya
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A demonstration against homosexuality in Kenya has fizzled after attracting only a handful of protesters. Monday's demonstration by about 35 people was called by the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya in advance of this month's visit of President Barack Obama. The group is calling on Obama not to advocate for gay rights during his visit to Africa July 24-28. Alliance leader Bishop Mark Kariuki said homosexuality is immoral and that Obama should "respect the faith of Kenyans." On Sunday, Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto said same-sex couples should leave the country. Gay sex is a crime in Kenya punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
"Max"
It's officially summer. What better time for a heartwarming caper movie about a troubled but noble Texas teen, his troubled but noble dog, and those crazy mean gun smugglers they tangle with? Yes, we said crazy mean gun smugglers. Mexican cartels, too. If that doesn't sound like normal PG-rated fare to you, well, you're right, there's nothing too normal about "Max." Billed as a family adventure, this movie is probably best described as a mix of "Lassie" and "No Country for Old Men." It's like they invited the Coen brothers — or maybe Quentin Tarantino — to script a few scenes of a "Dora the Explorer" episode. We could go on with the analogies, but let's just say that there are still some people who'll appreciate "Max," directed and co-written by Boaz Yakin, because they love dogs, and thus any film about a good dog is a worthwhile endeavor. And the dog IS good. But beware: This is No Movie for Little Kids. We begin in Afghanistan, where Max (a Belgian Malinois, actually played by four pooches) is a highly trained military dog, performing risky searches alongside his devoted handler, U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott. We see Max singlehandedly locate a Taliban weapons cache in a secret compartment in a home. But then tragedy strikes, and Kyle is killed. Back in Texas, the Wincott family — Mom Pamela (Lauren Graham, totally underused), Dad Ray (Thomas Haden Church) and teenager Justin (Josh Wiggins) — are grieving at the funeral when they meet Max, who, heartbreakingly, knows his boss is in the coffin. Max, understandably, is suffering from trauma, and is hard to handle. He only seems calm around Justin; he senses the boy is Kyle's brother. The family brings the dog home. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for action violence, peril, brief language and some thematic elements." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Minions"
Sidekicks rarely shine when thrust into the spotlight, but what about a few hundred of them? The Minions, having been the best part of the two previous "Despicable Me" movies, have swarmed the screen in "Minions." As candidates for center stage, they are seemingly ill-suited. Slavishly — if rarely competently — devoted lackeys, they're underlings by both definition and verticality. They don't speak intelligibly, which, to be fair, isn't a bar all of Hollywood's leading men reach. Instead, they talk in a bright babble that belies their fondness for colorful phonetics. "Banana" and "piñata" are their kind of words. Their unsuitability for the lead role, or just about anything else, is much of the fun of "Minions," a happy henchmen overload that largely succeeds in its simple mission: More Minions! Directed by Pierre Coffin (who co-directed "Despicable Me" one and two and voices the Minions) and Kyle Balda, "Minions" begins in fine form. The little yellow ones are already humming the Universal theme as the film begins. With Geoffrey Rush narrating, we get the history of the Minions, which stretches back across eons and begins with them — a curios early mammal — literally walking out of the sea. But the evolution stops there. For thousands of years, we see, they've been letting down their evil masters, from a Tyrannosaurus Rex accidentally tipped into a volcano, to Dracula, whom they excitedly wake with a birthday cake and wide-open blinds. The Minions have their own Ice Age, however, ending up leaderless in Antarctica. After a few hundred years, the joy of snow ball fights beginning to dim, three of them — Kevin, Bob and Stuart — set out on a quest to find a new

supervillain to idolize. Soon, they're on their way to Villain-Con, a riff on ComicCon only a convention celebrating the likes of Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), an evil world-conqueror in a beehive. The trio inadvertently wins a job in Overkill's entourage, and they're soon enmeshed in her plan to take the British throne, along with Overkill's inventor, Herb (Jon Hamm). RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action and rude humor." RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Self/less"
"Self/less," if you couldn't tell from the preposterous title, is a deeply silly movie that takes itself very, very seriously. The premise is interesting enough: A dying man (Ben Kingsley) undergoes a procedure to save his mind by ditching his failing body for a shiny new model (Ryan Reynolds, you could do worse). But, the lofty ambitions, trite messages, half-hearted allegories and over-the-top caricatures make director Tarsem Singh's ("The Cell," ''The Fall") latest a misguidedly campy experience. Here, the dying man, Damian (Kingsley), is possibly the worst person in the world. In the opening scene, he destroys a young competitor who is aiming to encroach on his real estate empire. Damian, you see, is extremely wealthy and powerful. He's "the man who built New York from the ground up" and he can ruin another's life before lunch, almost for sport. He's also only got six months to live. His cancer has metastasized and he has yet to come to terms with it. He hasn't even told his daughter ("Downton Abbey's" Michelle Dockery in a tiny role), although we'll soon find out that they're estranged. This is a selfish, egotistical man. The type who walks all the way over to the driver's side of his town car to knock on the window so the driver will get out and open the passenger seat door for him. The type who is so consumed with his own specialness that he will pay $250 million for a new "vessel" for his brilliant mind. The type who also craves immortality so wholly that he doesn't ask too many questions about the origins of the new body. The doctor behind the controversial "shedding" procedure, Albright (a mustache-twirling Matthew Goode), snivels that the bodies are grown in labs. Right. Anyway, in his new, youthful body Damian goes off to live in New Orleans to play pickup basketball, party and get girls — a lot of them. (There's an entire montage of young beauties falling on his bed). Because even with 86 years of wisdom, when you're suddenly given the body of Ryan Reynolds, priorities shift. So much for using that great mind! RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence, some sexuality, and language." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
"Irrational Man"
Woody Allen has always been interested in man's search for meaning in life — a search he clearly sees as futile. Who can forget the young woman in "Play it Again, Sam," staring at a Jackson Pollock painting and seeing "the hideous lonely emptiness of existence, nothingness, the predicament of man forced to live in a barren, godless eternity"? That's not even the whole quote —but it could be Allen's mantra. The director has also mined the themes of crime and punishment, including murder —think "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Match Point." All these threads — plus, of course, love and seduction —come together in his 45th
July 23, 2015
feature, "Irrational Man," which may not be his very best recent work, but is by far not his worst, either. As in so many Allen films, even if some parts don't gel, others do. If "Irrational Man" falls short of late-career home runs like "Midnight in Paris" and "Blue Jasmine," it also feels more fully realized than last year's visually gorgeous but otherwise uneven period piece, "Magic in the Moonlight." As always, the casting is something any director would kill for. Here, we have Joaquin Phoenix (grizzled, slightly potbellied) as an existentially challenged philosophy professor, Emma Stone (utterly effervescent) as his bright-eyed student, and Parker Posey (warmly kooky) as the sex-starved academic who forms the third side of this odd triangle. The setting is Newport, Rhode Island, and that wind-swept, seaside town looks beautiful — no surprise, given the pedigree of cinematographer Darius Khondji. It's summer session at a small college, and Abe Lucas (Phoenix) arrives to teach philosophy. Accomplished and brilliant, he's also known for having affairs with students and swigging often from a flask in his pocket. "That should put some Viagra into the philosophy department," an observer says of his arrival. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some language and sexual content." RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Trainwreck"
Women can be jerks, too. Everyone knows that. And yet in the movies, the female schmuck is generally relegated to side characters. She's a friend. She's a villain. She's never the heroine. In the outdated rulebook of who we get to see on the big screen, leading ladies need to be likable — that tiresome, comedy-killing characteristic. Thank goodness, then for Amy Schumer, the paradigmbusting, enfant terrible who's there to snap us out of our malaise with one rowdy gal: Amy. Her vehicle, "Trainwreck," written by and starring Schumer, luxuriates in the idea of selfishness while shifting our antiquated ideas of what we want from a female lead, because, most importantly, it's very funny. Bawdy, brash and beaming with confidence in every mistake, Amy does not suffer fools gladly or suitors at all. As a young girl, her good time Charlie father (Colin Quinn) instills in her the idea that monogamy is impossible. Or, "monogamy isn't realistic" as he makes Amy and her even younger sister recite over and over after a conversation comparing partners to dolls. It becomes her mantra. We meet up with her 23 years later, boozing and sleeping her way through Manhattan. Well, not sleeping. She never sleeps over at a man's place or lets them stay at hers. Amy is pro-pleasure, anti-romance, and just a "modern chick who does what she wants" in gold lamé miniskirts. She's a selfsatisfied mess. Her sister Kim (Brie Larson) has chosen a different route, marrying a sweet, dorky guy (Mike Birbiglia) with a sweet dorky son (Evan Brinkman). Amy pokes fun at them with caustic abandon. Were it not for the great performances from Larson and Birbiglia, the ongoing finger-pointing at Kim's boring life might just come across as mean. Instead, they just accept Amy (with an eye roll). Amy is a true jerk. She's selfish. She's rude. And she knows it. It's an interesting line that the movie skirts for the duration and a testament to Schumer that this mostly unlikable character remains enjoyable to watch. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: 125 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

The director has also mined the themes of crime and punishment, including murder — think "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Match Point." All these threads — plus, of course,
love and seduction —come together in his 45th feature, "Irrational Man," which may not be his very best recent work, but is by far not his worst, either. Here, we have Joaquin Phoenix (grizzled, slightly potbellied) as an existentially challenged philosophy professor, Emma Stone (utterly effervescent) as his bright-eyed student, and
Parker Posey (warmly kooky) as the sexstarved academic who forms the third side of this odd triangle. Abe is precisely the sort of disgruntled, unattainable intellectual that young women can't stay away from. That's what happens to
Jill (Stone), who's beautiful, brilliant, kind and also an accomplished pianist (that last part may be overkill, but it's certainly not the film's most outlandish plot point). Bored with her clean-cut boyfriend, she finds herself drawn to her bad-boy professor, who's "so darned interesting and different." Meanwhile, frustrated wife Rita (Posey) has been dreaming of bedding Abe since before his arrival, and will NOT be denied. Yet Abe's long stretch of depression has left him with some issues in the sack. What's more, he's exhibiting disturbing nihilistic tendencies. At a party, he gets hold of the family gun and plays a game of real Russian Roulette, hoping to teach some sort of metaphysical lesson.
"Minions" another money maker By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Another Summer weekend, another $100 million-grossing film opening. So goes 2015. I hate to be ho-hum on the matter, but the facts show that it's only mildly amusing to get to the century mark these days. Between kick-off oversaturation and t h e i n f l a t ed t i c k e t p r i ce s of the day, this is hardly the milestone it was even ten years ago. The latest blockbuster I refer to is Minions, Universal's third picture in the series about a mad super-villain and his stooges. This time around, Gru i s g o n e a n d t h e M i n i o n s a re given a suitable origin story in a winning prequel that was going to be a hit from the minute it was announced last year. Their
marketing is totally on point and I see a kid in a Minions T-shirt at least once every day somewhere in town. I even ate a box of their Tic Tacs last week. So where did the Minions come from? Did they have their own country like the Oompa Loompas? Where they manufactured in a lab like Spidey's radioactive arachnids? No. Minions have been around since the age of the dinosaurs. Their saga begins by tracing them back to their first leader, one that they would follow with typical blind loyalty, the T-Rex. After inducing the extinction of the thunder lizards, they move through history meeting some o f t h e g re a t l o o m i n g f i g u re s of thuggery (like Dracula) and serving with thickheaded bootlicking. The new movie is
set primarily in the swinging 1960s when a trio of Minions leaves their tribe at the South Pole (where they're auditioning for the Yeti) and venture out into the modern world. Kevin, the de facto leader, is the tall and skinny o n e . S t u a r t i s t h e re b e l l i o u s guitar player. Baby Bob is the one they all kind of look out for as their adventures take them first to New York City and then O r l a n d o f o r Vi l l a i n C o n , a n annual gathering of masterminds, henchmen, Mr. Bigs, and those that love them. At the convention they meet Scarlett Overkills (Sandra Bullock), the baddest babe of them all. She recruits them after B o b s u c c e s s f u l l y p ro v e s t h e i r worth during a heist contest. They wing their way to London where the plan is to steal Queen
Elizabeth's crown so that Scarlett can fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a real princess. The story is beside the point; little kids don't need plot so much as you think. Instead the 88 minutes of this movie feature a lot of sight gags that largely hinge upon the charm of the Minions nonsensical made-up language, a mish-mash of the S p a n i s h a n d F re n c h R o m a n c e languages with just enough English peppered in for people to get the idea of what they're trying to say. The context is more than enough to help the jokes land. I can guarantee that you'll be saying "Ba-na-na" for days after hearing the boys chant for their favorite treat. Co-director Pierre Coffin voices all of the Minions' parts. After a hilarious jab at history
July 23, 2015
when Bob pulls Excalibur from a stone and is crowned King, the movie wraps up with the kismet of all endings and an introduction to a future boss for our Twinkie-shaped friends. The movie is chock full of '60s references and really does a great job of incorporating hit tunes f ro m b a n d s l i k e T h e B e a t l e s , Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and The Turtles. You might even miss a cool Abbey Road joke if you blink too fast. Jon Hamm, Geoffrey Rush, Michael Keaton, and Allison Janney provide additional voices. It's a good thing that the Minions are still funny because they're clearly still very popular and not going anywhere soon. Minions runs 91 minutes and is rated PG for action and rude humor. I give this film two stars out of four.

Straight No Chaser to appear at The Fox
Atlantic Records recording group Straight No Chaser has announced the release of their much-anticipated new album as well as details of a major North American tour. "The New Old Fashioned" – the world famous a cappella group’s fifth fulllength release – arrives this October. Straight No Chaser will celebrate the album’s release with what will be their biggest headline tour to date. “The New Old Fashioned Tour” sets off on October 16th in Las Vegas at the MGM Casino’s David Copperfield Theatre and then continues into 2016, concluding with 2 dates in Hawaii (Honolulu and Maui) to ring in the New Year (see attached itinerary). The tour will stop at The Fox
Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. show on Nov. 27. Tickets may be purchased at at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. “The New Old Fashioned Tour” follows Straight No Chaser ’s recently concluded “The Happy Hour Tour,” an epic 2014/2015 world trek which saw the group perform over 67 shows in the US alone, as well as dates in more than 15 countries, including Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Austria, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Kingdom for more than 200,000 paying fans. Additionally, Straight No Chaser is set to take part in one of their home state of Indiana’s greatest traditions, the singing of “(Back Home Again In) Indiana” prior to the start of the annual Indianapolis 500. The group – which was founded in 1996 at Indiana University Bloomington – will perform “(Back Home Again In) Indiana” during
the pre-race festivities, taking on the honor following legendary entertainer Jim Nabors’s 2014 retirement after having performed the song live 35 times since 1972. The Indianapolis 500 Pre-Race Show airs live on ABC on May 24th at 12 Noon ET (check local listings). Straight No Chaser ’s fourth full-length release, 2013’s “Under the Influence” saw the renowned vocal group reimagining a selection of their all-time favorite songs alongside many of the superstar artists and undisputed music icons
that made them famous. Produced by Mark Kibble (a founding member of the legendary a cappella group Take 6 and one of Straight No Chaser ’s primary influences), the album included unprecedented collaborations with some of popular music’s best and brightest – including Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Rob Thomas, Seal, Sara Bareilles, and Jason Mraz – as Straight No Chaser put their distinctive and inimitable spin on songs known and loved the world over.

Travel Museum to unveil special exhibit on Aug. 3 For The Edge A groundbreaking exhibit on Abraham Lincoln’s relationships with the small but growing Jewish population of Civil War-era America opens at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on Aug. 3. “With Firmness in the Right: Lincoln and the Jews” examines Lincoln’s role in paving the way for acceptance and inclusion of Jews in America. It also tells the story of how a number of Jews, as a group and as individuals, affected Lincoln deeply and became his neighbors, friends, colleagues and allies. The exhibit gathers Lincoln documents, photographs, letters, Bibles and other artifacts from many different sources. The Shapell Manuscript Foundation, the Chicago Historical Society, Brown University, the Library of Congress, the National Archives and the Lincoln Presidential Library all contributed. Some items have never been exhibited publicly until now. Inspired by the book “Lincoln and the Jews: A History,” by Jonathan D. Sarna and Benjamin Shapell, the exhibit opened at the New-York Historical Society earlier this year. A significantly revised version will open at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on Aug. 3 and run through Nov. 15. “Abraham Lincoln befriended Jews and would not tolerate bigotry toward them, even from his most vaunted general. His acceptance of Jews set a pattern that made acceptance a bit easier for other
minorities coming to America in the years ahead,” said Eileen Mackevich, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “We hope this exhibit brings new attention to this part of the Lincoln story.” By the time of his death, Lincoln had had more Jewish friends and acquaintances than any president before him. They included Julius Hammerslough, who owned a Springfield clothing store; Samuel G. Alschuler, a photographer who produced portraits of Lincoln in 1858 and 1860; Abraham Jonas, a Quincy attorney whom Lincoln described as “one of my most valued friends”; and Issachar Zacharie, a doctor who operated on Lincoln’s feet. The exhibit will display correspondence between Lincoln and Jonas, photos by Alschuler, and Lincoln’s hand-written praise for the treatment provided by Zacharie. It also includes Lincoln’s appointment of the U.S. military’s first Jewish chaplain, the commissions of Jewish officers and eulogies written by rabbis after Lincoln’s assassination. The exhibition is guest curated by Dr. Ann Meyerson. “This exhibit does more than shed light on Lincoln’s views of a specific group. It tells us about his heart, his fundamental sense of fairness,” said Daniel Stowell, the Lincoln Presidential Library’s curator for the exhibit. “He was always willing to look past old prejudices. Lincoln’s broader view for America found expression in his Second Inaugural Address, segments of which will appear in
the exhibit in Lincoln’s own hand.” The Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum plans an array of events and activities inspired by the new exhibit. Gary Zola, professor of the American Jewish experience at Cincinnati’s Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion, will speak at the opening night reception for the exhibit. Daniel Stowell, director of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln, will speak Aug. 23 at the museum. The event will be presented in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Springfield. On Oct. 3, the presidential library presents an evening of the American songbook. The event will feature Laurence Maslon, from the Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and Ollie Watts Davis, music professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Jonathan Sarna, co-author of “Lincoln and the Jews: A History,” will speak Oct. 15. Sarna is chair of the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program at Brandeis U n i v e r s i t y, p re s i d e n t o f t h e Association for Jewish Studies, and chief historian of the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia. The Lincoln Presidential Library presents a discussion of American Jewish history on Nov. 7 with Hasia Diner, director of the GoldsteinGoren Center for American Jewish History at New York University. 4,000th Mesker facade discovered in North Dakota For The Edge
T
he Illinois Historic Preservation Agency’s search for buildings decorated with historic “Mesker” façades has reached a milestone by finding its 4,000th building.
No. 4,000 is a hardware store at 46 Main Avenue in New Leipzig, North Dakota. Installed around 1910, the façade was purchased by F & E Lumber Co. and featured in the 1911 Mesker catalog. Mesker façades were made of galvanized steel and cast iron. They offered a simple, affordable way to add decorative touches to a building. The durable facades often survive despite the occasional neglect and lack of

maintenance. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency began the “Got Mesker?” effort 10 years ago to find all remaining buildings adorned with Mesker products. The goal is to encourage protection of these buildings that are rich with architectural history. Meskers have been found in 1,667 communities in 49 states and Canada. Hawaii is the only state without any documented Mesker buildings. Illinois has the most – at least 920. Two firms produced the façades from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Mesker Brothers Iron Works of St. Louis and George L. Mesker & Company of Evansville, Ind., were owned by brothers but operated independently. They best

demonstrate the trade of mass-produced building parts during the turn of the century. Information about Mesker buildings is available at http:// bit.ly/mesker. Darius Bryjka, project reviewer at IHPA, began the Mesker identification effort in May 2005. He continues chronicling Mesker buildings through a blog at www. meskerbrothers.com. “What began as a statewide initiative in Illinois turned into a nationwide search, with everyday citizens becoming history detectives as they uncovered their communities’ heritage,” Bryjka said. “Now, because of ‘Got Mesker,’ more than 1,600 communities across the country are more aware of the historic treasures they have right next door.”

Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, avocado, bacon and tomato hash, accompanied with fresh fruit, an English muffin and strawberry jam at First Watch. Below, the front of the restaurant.
First Watch in St. Peters By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, so when my dad and I set out to embark on our annual father-son trip recently, it was important to find a good place to kick things off. We found First Watch in St. Peters, Mo. Our trip this year was to Kansas City, so I knew there was great barbecue ahead of me and wanted to start the trip with a good breakfast before we got out of town. First Watch is a chain restaurant, something I normally try and stay away from, but it doesn't have the feel of a chain. We visited the St. Peters location at 312 Mid Rivers Center. When we walked in we were immediately impressed with the extreme cleanliness of the restaurant and the friendliness and speediness of the staff. Only open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., First Watch focuses on good breakfast options and offers a slew of healthy choices. You can get lunch there too, but for the purposes of this visit it was all about the breakfast. My eyes quickly became affixed to the hashes offered by First Watch. I decided to try the delectable sounding avocado, bacon and tomato hash. Mine came with two scrambled eggs atop a hash of fresh seasoned potatoes, sliced avocado, bacon and diced tomatoes mixed with cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. It was accompanied by an English muffin with strawberry jam and a cup of fresh fruit, comprised of strawberries, grapes, pineapple and honey dew melon. When it all arrived, I squirted ketchup and hot sauce on top and dug in. It was quite delicious. The avocado was cut into sizable chunks

and added a great burst of flavor. One complaint was that it lacked on tomatoes. I think they were cut so small they weren't allowed to stand out. I was extremely pleased with the hash though. It was a little crispy on the edges, but a problem I run into with ordering dishes like this sometimes is the potatoes are dried out, but at First Watch that was not the case. It was all fresh

and all blended together for a very satisfying experience. The fruit was a nice touch. I gobbled up the strawberries, grapes and pineapple, but am not a fan of honey dew so I passed it off to dad. He had no complaints about it. The best part of the meal was the strawberry jam that went on the English muffin. I could have guzzled this stuff from a tube. It had a rich and hearty flavor and the

English muffin was very fresh. Dad went with a simple selection for his choice. He ordered scrambled eggs, accompanied by a ham steak, grilled potatoes and a n E n g l i s h m u ff i n w i t h t h a t scrumptious strawberry jam. He raved about the great flavor in the ham steak. Looking over the rest of the breakfast menu at First Watch, it was easy to find other great choices, too.
The French Toast Monte Cristo jumped out at me. It included a house-made sourdough French toast layered with ham, turkey, melted Swiss cheese and creamy Dijonnaise grilled to perfection and dusted with powdered cinnamon sugar. It's served with dressed greens and a side of raspberry preserves for dipping. There is also the chickichanga with whipped eggs, white-meat chicken, chorizo sausage, green chilies, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, onions and avocado rolled in a flour tortilla. It's topped with Vera Cruz sauce and sour cream and served with seasoned potatoes and fresh fruit. One of the healthy choices is the power wrap, served with egg whites, turkey, spinach, houseroasted Crimini mushrooms and Swiss cheese wrapped in a sundried tomato basil tortilla. It's served with fresh fruit and housemade salsa. First Watch also offers a slew of omelette options, pancakes, waffles, French toast, crepes, more hash choices, oatmeal and much more. To check out the whole First Watch breakfast menu, as well as its l u n c h m e n u , v i s i t w w w. firstwatch.com. There are other St. Louis area locations if you can't make it to the St. Peters locale, but they are all on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. Other First Watch spots include: Webster Groves, Creve Coeur, Des Peres, Kirkwood, Clayton, Chesterfield and Okawville. It's a little expensive for breakfast food, but dad and I had no complaints with the overall experience. It was a wonderful start to our trip and I would recommend First Watch as a great place to start your day when you gotta eat.
