Working out while doing the chores By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge One day in early April, Tammy Bauer found herself having one of those days. Too much to do around the house and no time left to squeeze in one of the workouts that had become so much a part of her new life. “Errands, appointments, laundry that is about to consume the family, and a house that needs some attention,” is the way she put it on the Facebook page of Blue Wave of Madison County, a fitness and martial arts center in Hamel where Bauer teaches. For Bauer, it was a teachable moment. She wrote that instead of her normal swim that day she had decided to stay home and take care of things that needed attention. But because she still wanted to get her workout in, she pulled out her jump rope and, before each chore, knocked out 100 jumps and 10 pushups. “I plan on getting 1,000 jumps and 100 pushups in today, a couple of minutes at a time,” she wrote. “That is how I fit mine in today! What do you do?” Blue Wave of Madison County is a Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do school that operates behind Hamel Elementary School at the Community Center, on Park Avenue. It opened about two years ago as a way for Bauer to share the benefits of martial arts training with her students, who range from grade school age to older adults. “I love to share fitness,” she said recently. “It truly, truly is my passion, especially martial arts training and the benefits it brings to people’s lives. I could not be happier doing what I’m doing.” On a recent afternoon, Bauer arrived early to prepare for a boot camp fitness class. One of her students is Denise Randall, 43. Asked
whether she had followed Bauer’s advice to begin incorporating short workout bursts into her day, Randall said that she had been doing squats and calf raises, in bursts of 25. The easiest to fit in, she said, were the calf raises. “If you’re just standing there waiting on the wash to be done, or cooking supper, you can just work those in whenever you can. Those two are really good.” Randall says she shoots for 200 squats during the course of a day, though that doesn’t happen every day. Randall learned about the class from a friend, Denise Machuga, 45, who says she has to work out every day or she just doesn’t feel right. She does a lot of walking at the gym she belongs to. “And I just try to get some exercise in every day, even if it’s just cutting the grass,” she says. “It’s kind of a habit now.” Bauer says most of her students have seen results from the short-burst workouts around the home or office. Things like pushups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, lunges. “Any place where you have an office,” she says. “You can shut the door and knock out your five or 10 pushups. And you don’t get sweaty. You just get up and go on with your life and maybe in the next hour or so you can do it again. Or maybe back at home.” Bauer grew up on Dunlap Lake in Edwardsville. Her sister, Barb Honchak, a professional mixed martial arts fighter, recently won the world flyweight title in the Invicta Fighting Championships, held in Kansas City. The family has always been active. Their parents were passionate scuba divers, and their mother, Jan Jurkus, said recently that the girls began diving at the age of 8 and earned diving certificates by 12 , the first year they were eligible. But the road to fitness hasn’t always been
easy for Bauer. She got a job with Master Card, and worked her way up to IT manager in a department known as the Command Center, in O’Fallon, Mo. The company later transferred her to Kansas City, but in a few years she and her husband, Michael, moved back to O’Fallon. In 2011, she lost the job when Master Card laid off a team that Bauer was managing. At the time, Honchak was in the midst of a transition to mixed martial arts. “She really went and got what she wanted - on her own,” Bauer says. “When I lost the job with Master Card, she inspired me to go ahead and tackle what it is I really wanted to do.” But over time, Bauer had added 50 pounds to her weight and was looking to change her lifestyle. When her sister visited her, Honchak urged her to enter an MS 150 event. The MS 150 is a benefit ride for Multiple Sclerosis that requires cyclists to ride 75 miles each day, for two consecutive days. For Bauer, it was her first MS 150. “It was horrible,” she said recently. “I walked about every hill.” But she finished. And the next year she entered a double century - a hundred-miles, for two consecutive days. In 2011, she traveled to Branson and completed a Half Ironman - a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a run of 13.1-miles. But soon she found that she had lost too much weight. After a quick adjustment of her diet, Bauer bounced back to a more comfortable 150. A couple of knee surgeries have slowed down her racing schedule in recent months. But she added strength training to a regimen that included running, biking and martial arts. Since opening Blue Wave of Madison County, Bauer’s focus has been on her martial arts and boot camp students, in Hamel and in

Lake St. Louis. There’s little time for training. “That’s okay,” she says, “this is so much better.” On a recent afternoon, Bauer led a class of 11 boot campers. They spread out in an oval pattern inside the center. Each picked out a small medicine ball and the class warmed up by lifting the ball overhead and slamming it to the floor. Then she ran through a series of other exercises, by themselves and with partners. In between, she marched them outside, for a run down Park Avenue, holding the weights or medicine balls over their heads. Bauer kept an eye on them. “Get those over your head,” she cajoled. “Do you know where your head is? It’s not down by your bottom.” When they returned, Bauer asked at one point whether anyone was having difficulty. “No? You guys are being tough. I like it!” To add interest, Bauer intersperses workouts with games. Bauer has been training under Sixth Degree Black Belt Master David Blevins since 2008. Her goal is to pass the Tae Kwon Do training on to her own students. It’s a centuries-old martial arts system that involves the whole person, she says, a connection of mind, body and spirit. The rigorous training creates great camaraderie among her students. Bauer has also earned a personal training license. Some day - maybe in five or seven years she would like to open another studio, maybe in Bethalto or Edwardsville. Losing her job at Master Card forced the Bauers to scale back their lives. For one thing, they sold their house, and are now renting. And on weekends they no longer go out to the movies. “We had to significantly scale back our lives financially to do this,” she says, “but it has been worth every bit of it.”

s a child, I remember our next door neighbor grew the most beautiful dark purple irises. Every spring they would come up in clusters right beside the fence that separated their property from ours. To this day, purple remains one of my favorite colors, and I’m convinced those irises are part of the reason why. If you love irises too, then head to the Missouri Botanical Garden for the annual Iris Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18 where you’ll find hundreds of beautiful irises perfect for adding a splash of color to your garden next spring. “For the mid-to-late-spring garden, nothing can surpass the rainbow of colors provided by irises,” stated North Gardens Supervisor Jason Delaney in a news release. “Requiring very little care, irises are hardy in our freezing winters, tolerant of our summer drought, and they are resistant to deer and rabbits. Plus they are wonderfully fragrant! What could be better?” Visitors can choose from hundreds of varieties of irises in different colors, sizes and blooming season. The sale consists of iris plants from the Alice Goodman Iris Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. All divisions within the bearded group, including tall,

border, intermediate, miniature and standard dwarf will be available at the sale. Certain varieties offered will bloom multiple times throughout the season and others are historically significant. Don’t worry if you’re not an iris expert though. Visitors will be able to identify the different cultivars by name along with a color photo. Members of the Greater St. Louis Iris Society will also be available to give plant care advice and share information about their organization. a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. All plants come from the Garden’s famous daylily collection and will be available for purchase while supplies last. Visitors can choose from thousands of plants representing hundreds of cultivars, including new varieties and old favorites. All the varying sizes and shapes of daylilies will be available, from plants with miniature to extra large blooms, double flowers, spiders and unusual forms. Selections available this year may include ‘Marked by Lydia’, ‘Fires of Fuji’, ‘Egyptian Queen’, ‘Early to Bed’, ‘Flutterbye’, ‘Frances Joiner’,
and more. Daylilies are members of the Xanthorrhoeaceae family, making them a reliable producer of summer color and a favorite of gardeners. Visitors may preview the daylilies for sale in full summer bloom by visiting the Jenkins Daylily Garden and the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening. This spectacular display lasts for six weeks in June and July during which the daylilies produce a show of blooms, seemingly coordinated to last for weeks. The Garden displays over 2,000 specimens, with over 1,800 in the Jenkins Daylily Garden alone. Of those hundreds of plants, over one dozen species and over 1,700 cultivars are represented. Experts from the MBG Daylily Association and the West County Daylily Club will be on hand to give plant care advice and answer questions about the cultivars. Visitors can also pick up information about the MBG Daylily Association, which has been hosting annual sales of the Garden’s daylily divisions since 1989. Tw i l i g h t T h u r s d a y s will run starting in June and will continue through September. Bring your cameras to watch the remarkable sunset from the tower’s three platforms. Twilight Thursdays will allow visitors to view the memorable summer sunsets over the confluence. Admission is $5, which includes a tour of the Tower. Bring family, friends, a special someone or just enjoy the view alone to wind down from a stressful day. Visitors are more than welcome to stay until nightfall. Keep an eye out on the time of sunset to plan your trip accordingly. This season the Tower has synced the sunset days with the lunar cycle. Every new and full moon, expect to see the Tower open for viewing. “I have never seen a better sunset. This is the perfect place to watch the sun go down after a long day,” says Don Russell, longtime volunteer at the Tower. “You can see the sun set and the moon rise, all at once. Bring your camera because it’s beautiful.” Twilight Thursdays will be on every first and third Thursday of the month from now through September. Times of the event will be set to match the sunset. Run with the Rev event planned Radio personality and avid runner Rev. Gregory Seltz has issued a challenge for runners and walkers in the St. Louis area to join his team and participate in the MO’Cowbell Half Marathon this fall. “Come Run with the Rev.!” he says. Seltz is Speaker of The Lutheran Hour, the world’s longest-running Christian outreach radio broadcast and flagship program of St. Louisbased Lutheran Hour Ministries. The Lutheran Hour airs on more than 1,350 stations and reaches a nationwide audience of nearly 800,000 each week. Seltz began
serving in the Speaker role in. “Run with the Rev. is about developing ‘muscular Christians’ for the 21st century,” Seltz says. “The resources we provide online, including devotions, training videos and personal testimonies, will offer inspiration that propels you to achieve your fitness goals and increase your mental toughness, while also strengthening your faith and deepening your personal relationship with God.” Preparation for the race will involve a 12-week training program geared to help each participant be physically, emotionally and spiritually ready at the starting line. “A good overall approach to your physical and mental training is just as important as having a specific running plan, and it can help you be at your best on race day,” says Seltz. The MO’Cowbell Half Marathon will be held Sunday, Oct.6 at Frontier Park in St. Charles, Mo. Registration is $90 before Aug. 31 and $100 after Sept. 1; the deadline to register is Oct. 1. MoBOT plans summer floral display Step into a fascinating desert e n v i ro n m e n t a t t h e M i s s o u r i Botanical Garden this summer, from June 29 through August 4, and enjoy the newly introduced Desert Show: Plants and People of the Western U.S. Deserts. The display emphasizes the important role desert plants play in our lives, highlighting the North American deserts. Visitors will get a chance to see cacti varieties and learn about the use of plants by Native Americans for textiles and food. Garden visitors just how important collaborations with these cultures are; the Native American people in the Western United States use hundreds of different plant species for food, medicine, fiber, dye and other purposes. This shared knowledge allows us to conduct meaningful ethnobotanical, conservation, and ecological research projects. Several assorted genera of cacti will be on display including Yucca, Agave, Opuntia and Mammallaria and specimens of the Garden’s private collection, not usually seen by the public, will also be featured. Two hogan replicas are placed amidst the collection of cacti and cultural artifacts lending a strong sense of the U.S. Western Deserts. Collections of traditional and colorful Kachina dolls are included in the show. These historic figurines date back hundreds of years and were originally used in ceremonies to capture the essence of desired earthly traits. The Henry Shaw Cactus Society presents the Midwest’s largest succulent event during the opening weekend of the Desert Show, June 29-30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cacti and succulents of all shapes and sizes will be available for viewing and purchase. Brown Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden plays an important role in the new Desert Show by presenting how plants provide humans with basic resources such as food, medicine, fiber and other useful products, historically and today. Their mission, “To study, characterize and conserve useful plants and associated traditional knowledge for a sustainable future,� demonstrates ethnobotany through plants and cultural artifacts on display throughout the show. “Plants provide essential nourishment and resources in the desert cultures of the western United States,� explains Karen Walker, ethnobotanist for the Garden’s William L. People People planner Italian Fest to host midnight ride This fall, Collinsville’s Italian Fest once again offers activities to get you off the couch and moving. The 25th annual Italian Fest 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. in Uptown Collinsville. The route takes runners through the heart of the city along paved roads with police escort and traffic control. Big River Running Company will provide electronic chip timing for quick, reliable results, and runners will enjoy music at the finish line before the awards ceremony. Awards are given to the top 3 male and female finishers and the top three finishers in each age group. Individuals who take advantage of early bird registration get a discounted registration price and are guaranteed a T-shirt. MoBOT plans "Garden Glow 2013" The Missouri Botanical Garden is excited to announce its plans for “Garden Glow 2013,” the Garden’s first-ever winter light exhibit. Visitors will have the opportunity to stroll through the Garden at night surrounded by a spectacle of unique light installations. The exhibit will open Nov. 23, 2013 and run through Jan. 4, 2014. Hundreds of thousands of lights will adorn some of the Garden’s most iconic locations including the Climatron®, Kaeser Memorial Maze, the Central Axis and Tower Grove House. Walkways will be transformed into sensory light tunnels providing an explosion of visual magic, while more traditional candlelight village displays will delight crowds of all ages. “Our members, visitors and staff have asked about the possibility of seasonal lights for years. Religion Religion briefs Vatican commission clears John Paul II for sainthood, may be canonized with John XXIII VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope John Paul II has cleared the final obstacle before being made a saint, awaiting just the final approval from Pope Francis and a date for the ceremony that could come as soon as Dec. 8, a Vatican official and news reports said Tuesday. The ANSA news agency reported that a commission of cardinals and bishops met Tuesday to consider John Paul’s case and signed off on it. A Vatican official confirmed that the decision had been taken some time back and that Tuesday’s meeting was essentially a formality. One possible canonization date is Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a major feast day for the Catholic Church. This year the feast coincidentally falls on a Sunday, which is when canonizations usually occur. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized by the church to discuss saint-making cases on the record, confirmed reports in La Stampa newspaper that John Paul could be canonized together with Pope John XXIII, who called the Second Vatican Council but died in 1963 before it was finished.
Man, 51, arrested after fight over church pew space during Utah baby blessing service PLAIN CITY, Utah (AP) — Utah authorities say a dispute over pew space during a Mormon church baby blessing led to a bloody nose. Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther says officers were called Sunday morning to a Plain City meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lowther says a family had saved some seats so they could have a better view of the baby blessing. Witnesses say the argument began when 51-year-old Wayne Dodge sat in the section. Irish lawmakers give strong initial approval for bill allowing abortions in health emergencies DUBLIN (AP) — Ireland appeared on course to legalize abortion in extremely restricted circumstances as lawmakers voted Tuesday to support a bill that would permit pregnancies to be terminated when deemed necessary to save the woman’s life. Catholic leaders warned that the proposed law, which faces a final vote next week, would become a
“Trojan horse” leading eventually to widespread abortion access in Ireland. But Prime Minister Enda Kenny insisted Ireland’s constitutional ban on abortion would remain unaffected, and his government’s Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill won overwhelming backing in a 138-24 vote. Ireland’s 1986 constitutional ban on abortion commits the government to defend the life of the unborn and the mother equally. Ireland’s abortion law has been muddled since 1992, when the Supreme Court ruled that this “ban” actually meant that terminations should be legal if doctors deem one essential to safeguard the life of the woman — including, most controversially, from her own suicide threats. Six previous governments refused to pass a law in support of the Supreme Court judgment, citing its suicide-threat rule as open to abuse. This left Irish hospitals uncertain and

Prosecutor, legislator to help defend law banning abortions based on race, sex PHOENIX (AP) — A prosecutor and a state legislator are asking for court permission to help defend an Arizona law that bans abortions based on the race or sex of the child. A lawsuit filed on behalf of two civil rights groups challenges the law, which also makes it a felony to knowingly provide a sex- or racebased abortion. The suit contends the law unconstitutionally singles out Asian and black women based on stereotypes and beliefs that Asian and black women may choose an abortion because of race or the baby’s sex.

“World War Z”
Might there be a real zombie apocalypse one day? The way zombies have invaded our pop culture the last several years, it’s maybe a bit less implausible than it once was. What IS increasingly quite plausible, alas, is a global pandemic, and “World War Z,” the long-awaited Brad Pitt thriller, cleverly melds that real-life threat into the more fanciful zombie premise. Talk about more bang for your buck: Once you’ve settled back into your seat after a good snarling zombie chase, there’s nothing like the thought of a SARS outbreak to get the blood racing again. Despite the much-discussed production delays and budget overruns, this movie, based on the 2006 novel by Max Brooks (son of Mel), is pretty much what you’d want in a summer blockbuster: scary but not-too-gross zombies, a journey to exotic locales, a few excellent action scenes, and did we mention Pitt? As Gerry Lane, a former U.N. investigator called upon to save the planet, Pitt is a calm, intelligent presence amid the insanity. The most impressive scene is at the beginning, as the streets of Philadelphia are suddenly overrun by packs of wild, raging zombies. For an hour, the action is swift: North Korea, Israel, a harrowing plane crash. The final act takes place on a dramatically smaller scale, and at a slower pace. Oh, a reminder: Turn off those cellphones. After all, it’s not just your movie-going partner you’ll annoy here. Cellphones also happen to awaken zombies. Consider yourself warned. RATED: PG-13 for intense frightening zombie sequences, violence and disturbing images. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“The Way, Way Back”
There’s something inherently formulaic about summer coming-of-age movies. A quirky, awkward and misunderstood kid takes a summer off from regular life and finds a way — at the beach or by the pool — to, well, come of age, often with the help of an equally quirky adult. Summer ends. Life is changed. And that’s precisely what happens in “The Way, Way Back,” featuring an expert cast led by Steve Carell, Toni Collette and the terrific Sam Rockwell as that quirky adult. Luckily, though, the film, written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, is done with enough skill and delicacy that its adherence to formula doesn’t matter quite so much. Yes, it could have been a better movie had it taken bolder plot turns. But that likely won’t diminish the smile on your face — and very possibly the tear on your cheek — as you exit this charmer of a film. About that title: “The Way, Way Back” refers to the back seat in a station wagon that faces out to the road — the way, WAY back seat. RATED: PG-13 for, according to the Motion Picture Association of America: “thematic elements, language, some sexual content and brief drug material.” RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

obituary. It’s about empathy. In recounting (and slightly fictionalizing) the final day of 22-year-old Oscar Grant’s life, first-time writer-director Ryan Coogler has made a film that piles small daily gestures — and one final, heartbreakingly tragic one — into an inspiring reminder about basic human decency. That may sound trite, but “Fruitvale Station” — already a hit on the festival circuit — resonates not just for its portrait of injustice, but because its argument for treating strangers kindly, decently, comes at a time when fear and presumption often trump simple kindness, and the public sphere is navigated in cellphone bubbles. In a star-making performance, Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, the San Francisco Bay Area ex-convict and former drug dealer who, famously, was fatally shot by a transit police officer early on New Year’s morning, 2009. The moment is glimpsed in raw cellphone footage at the start of “Fruitvale Station,” before shifting back to the morning before and the start of Oscar’s last full day. On its surface, it’s a regular day of errands. But all of the stops reflect Oscar ’s struggle to balance his past, his unemployment and his family: girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), four-year-old daughter Tatiana (Ariana Neal) and mother Wanda (Octavia Spencer, also a producer of the film). RATED: R for some violence, language throughout and some drug use. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Only God Forgives”
At one point in this cartoonishly dark revenge saga starring Ryan Gosling, a man is terrorized by having sharp chopstick-like blades rammed through both arms, then both legs. And the torture session’s just getting going. By this point, alas, you’ve so thoroughly given up any hope of caring about these miserable characters that you’re thinking less about what this poor guy is feeling, and more about what you’re feeling, sitting there in your seat. As in, what time is it? As in, I’m thirsty. As in, I wonder what would feel worse, watching some more of this or actually being stabbed by sharp chopstick-like blades? There’s a word for this feeling: boredom. And that’s the biggest surprise and disappointment of this film by Nicolas Winding Refn, though some may take issue with the stylized violence, which also involves limbs being sliced off (albeit very quickly), and a scene involving a hand stuck into a bloody womb. On the plus side, Refn has created an evocative underworld in Bangkok — lonely, dark and tinged in a seductive neon red. But the movie’s real saving grace can be summed up in three words: Kristin Scott Thomas. You may know her as regal and graceful and British (or sometimes French), but here, she is American, garish, profane, and very, very nasty. It’s delicious to see this wonderful actress sink her teeth into something so off-type. And it’s a shame that Gosling, a terrific actor, doesn’t get to do more here. Mostly we just look at him as he, in turn, looks somewhere else, silently and stoically. He’s nice to look at. But still. At the end, you’ll be thinking of Thomas, whose exit is as splashy as her entrance. RATED: R for “strong bloody violence including grisly images, sexual content and language.” RUNNING TIME: 89 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS: One and a half stars out of four.

“The Conjuring”
As sympathetic, methodical ghostbusters Lorraine and Ed Warren, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make this old-fashioned haunted-house horror film something more than your average fright fest. In 1971, they come to the Perrons’ swampy, musty Rhode Island farmhouse — newly purchased from the bank — to investigate the demonic spirit that has begun terrorizing the couple (Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor) and their five daughters. Lorraine is clairvoyant, and Ed is a Vatican-sanctioned demonologist. They’re best known as the married, devoutly Catholic paranormal pros whose work with the Lutz family served as the basis for “Amityville Horror.” The film is built in the ‘70s-style mold of “Amityville” and, if one is kind, “The Exorcist.” Does it live up to it? More than most horror films, certainly. But as effectively crafted as it is, it’s lacking the raw, haunting power of the models it falls shy of. “The Exorcist” is a high standard, though: “The Conjuring” is an unusually sturdy piece of haunted-house genre filmmaking. The director is James Wan, who’s best known as one of the founding practitioners of that odious type of horror film called “torture porn” (“Saw”). Here he goes classical. Though it comes across as a self-conscious stab at more traditional, floorboard-creaking horror, Wan has succeeded in patiently building suspense (of which there is plenty) not out of bloodiness, but those old standbys of slamming doors and flashes in the mirror. RATED: R for sequences of disturbing violence and terror. RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Pacific Rim"
It’s one of the saving graces of “Pacific Rim,” Guillermo Del Toro’s new mega-budget monsters vs. robots extravaganza, that at a key juncture, it knows how to make fun of itself. This welcome bit of comic relief amid all the crunching, smashing and groaning in 3-D comes just as the good guys — that would be the robots, or rather the humans operating the 25-story machines built to save humanity — have hit a snag. These massive, digitally controlled contraptions suddenly all fail at once. But then — eureka! — someone points out that one rusty old robot is analog. And so, in a movie that has spent some $200 million to boast the very best in state-of-the-art tradecraft, an analog machine saves the day, at least temporarily. Ha! Holy retro technology. It’s too bad that Del Toro’s film, a throwback to the Japanese Kaiju monster films made famous by “Godzilla,” didn’t have more such deft moments. Though it’s made by an obviously gifted director and will likely please devotees of the genre, it ultimately feels very short on character and heavy on noise, noise, noise. Did we mention the crunching, smashing and groaning? Happily, the plot is not convoluted (the script is by Travis Beacham and Del Toro) and there’s at least one really cool concept, called “The Drift.” No, this doesn’t involve land formations. Happily, the plot is not convoluted (the script is by Travis Beacham and del Toro) and there’s at least one really cool concept, called “The Drift.” No, this doesn’t involve land formations. It’s the mind-melding that occurs between the two pilots of each Jaeger — that’s what they call the mega-robots that humans have built to fight the monsters rising from the sea. Subjected to a pre-flight “neural handshake,” the pilots are suddenly sharing brains, the better to command their robot. This leads to amusing dialogue, such as: “You know what I’m thinking?” Beat. “I’m in your brain!” That’s meant to be funny, but a later remark seems inadvertently so,
when the hero balks at going back to battle: “I can’t have anyone in my head again!” The real action begins some seven years into the Kaiju offensive (and circa 2020.) The Jaeger program, once successful, is failing. Global defense authorities decide to drop it and go for a giant coastal wall. Didn’t they see “World War Z?” Ask Brad Pitt: Walls don’t keep out zombies, and they won’t keep Kaiju out, either. It’s back to the Jaegers. Enter jaded former pilot Raleigh Becket (a handsome but bland Charlie Hunnam). Raleigh lost his co-pilot and brother in a Jaeger fight, and is in no mind to share his, er, mind again. But humanity’s at stake.
"Grown Ups 2" not good, but popular By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I have got to hand it to Adam Sandler. As the perennial man-child ages into his middle years, he’s continuing to do in Hollywood what he’s always done, on his own terms, and getting largely the same results from his work. We throw millions of dollars a year at him to talk like a baby, or a grouchy old man, or a pudgy stroke victim and the antics, long stale, continue to make him shine like the menorahs he so fondly sings about in his “Hanukah Song”. So why do we stand up for jokes about bathroom behavior, marital disharmony, and the lusty curvaceousness of ditzy ladies? I guess he appeals best to the pubescent thirteen year-old inside each man in America. And he remains oddly
humble all the while doing it. "Grown Ups 2" is pretty easy to figure out. It’s been three years since the monster hit that Sandler’s crew scored in 2010 with the first installment that introduces Lenny Feder (Sandler), his family (including a wife played by Salma Hayek Pinault), and an assortment of buddies (played to varying levels of believability by Kevin James, David Spade, and Chris Rock) and their families. The plot now is that the Feders have moved back to the idyllic little town they visited in Part I in order to raise their children somewhere more wholesomeness that the Big Bad of Los Angeles. The denizens of this perfect hamlet, however, are as oddball as anyone you’d meet in/on "Twin Peaks" or another great TV
cult classic, "Jericho." This goofy bunch, though, isn’t as charming. They’re sexual deviants, alcoholics, violent thugs, and an AfricanAmerican family of preternaturally balding folks (including Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Meadows, and Ellen Cleghorne) that all use the same annoying catchphrase/whine of confusion. O’Neal, at least, provides several delightful showcases for his surprising comic timing. Big men, especially from the NBA, aren’t known for that. The major obstacles to this film being nothing more than a family get-together is a feud between Lenny and his friends and the kids of a local fraternity that claim the bluff-side swimming hole that everybody wants to use. Led by a jerk jock (Taylor Lautner), the frat
boys are nothing more than bullies who use every opportunity to remind the central characters that they are aging rapidly and their best days might indeed by behind them. A climactic rumble between the two factions at the Feders’ ’80sthemed block party is predictablystaged and ends with every character either cartoonishly hurt or inflatably heroic. It was dumb, it was loud, and it was infrequently funny, but "Grown Ups 2" was exactly what we want to see, apparently. It opened No. 2 at the box office ahead of (the entertaining, but strange) ""Pacific Rim and trailing only the dominant "Despicable Me" sequel. It does have going for it the fact that, as one of my colleagues put it, (the film) “corners the season’s market on deer urine humor.” The growing list of cameo

and bit part characters that Sandler is known for putting in his cast is outrageous and longer now than ever. It even includes most of his real life family. I soon lost count, but his recent interview with Jimmy Fallon proved that there are no less than 16 current or former SNL performers lampooning themselves on-screen. For me, the best one was John Lovitz’s pervy fitness center janitor. He really owned that role. And if my brother-in-law should read any of this…I hope you have a great time, buddy. I know you’ve been dying to see the movie. "Grown Ups 2" runs 107 minutes and is rated PG-13 for crude and suggestive content, language, and some male rear nudity. I give this film one star out of four.

The Arts Artistic adventures CAM prepares for 10th anniversary This f a l l t h e C o n t e m p o r a r y Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) celebrates the tenth anniversary of its critically acclaimed building. The exhibition Place is the Space—on view September 6 through December 29, 2013— marks the beginning of a year-long celebration that will include special programming and exhibitions in honor of the Museum. Featuring new site-specific commissions by six major contemporary artists, Place is the Space is an unprecedented curatorial collaboration between the building’s architect, Brad Cloepfil, founding principal of Allied Works Architecture, and Dominic Molon, CAM’s chief curator. The opening of CAM’s building in September 2003 heralded not only the introduction of a new space for contemporary art in St. Louis but also a new identity for an institution that had begun as the First Street Forum in 1980. The twostory, 27,000-square-foot museum was designed with open, flexible spaces that allow for variation and emphasis on the artwork while highlighting transparency and natural light. After his work with CAM—Cloepfil’s first museum— the award-winning architect went on to design the Museum of Arts and Design, New York (2008), the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor, Michigan (2009), and the Clyfford Still Museum, Denver, Colorado (2011), among many other celebrated projects. Each of the five works in Place is the Space will respond to different aspects of the structure, including surface, scale, transparency, and boundaries. While demonstrating the building’s unique ability shape the presentation and experience of contemporary art, the exhibition also examines the larger idea of how various artists address museum spaces as a key element in the development of their work. In addition to Place is the Space, this fall CAM will present work by Anthony McCall and Thomas Bayrle and will introduce two new exhibition series that incorporate the building itself into the artwork: a sound art series titled Audible Interruptions as well as a series of video works that will be projected onto the Museum’s façade titled Street Views. PLACE IS THE SPACE ARTISTS AND WORKS A r o c h a - S c h r a e n e n ( C a r l a Arocha, b. 1961, Caracas, Venezuela; Stephane Schraenen, b. 1971, Antwerp, Belgium. Both live and work in Antwerp, Belgium) Founded in 2006, the ArochaSchraenen collective is known for their installation-based and sculptural work that explores the relationship between material, space, and perception. Arocha and Schraenen will extend this exploration at CAM with the installation of an overlapping abstract graphic pattern on the windows of the museum’s café and performance space. Jill Downen (b. 1967, Belleville, Illinois; lives and works in Kansas City and St. Louis) Downen’s work incorporates surfaces, flaws, and other elements of a space to create organic forms. Her project for Place is the Space, titled Beauty Mark, will feature the seaming of a long fissure in CAM’s concrete floor with gold

leaf as well as the reconstruction of a wall sculpture that she created at the Museum nearly a decade ago. Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle (b. 1961, Madrid; lives and works in Chicago) Manglano-Ovalle’s sophisticated sculptures and video installations often use natural forms such as clouds, icebergs, and DNA. The artist will present a new sculpture comprising a massive cube c o n s t ru c t e d o f c h a r re d c e d a r planks and a grid of white maple beehive structures to address issues of scale, proportion, and surface within the building. Vi rg i n i a O v e r t o n ( b . 1 9 7 1 , Nashville, Tennessee; lives and works in Brooklyn, New York) Known for graceful sculptures that use raw materials such as drywall, mud, and wood beams, Overton will create an elegant arrangement of long metal pipes across architectural voids between the Museum’s main galleries and performance space and between the performance space and lobby. Dominique Petitgand (b. 1965, Laxou, France; lives and works in Paris) Petitgand, one of the most prominent French artists working i n s o u n d , c re a t e s w o r k s t h a t address the relationship between the spoken word, silence, music, and space. His project will juxtapose abstract sounds emanating from speakers placed in the main galleries and performance space, with a French vocal narrative and video translation, prompting visitors to consider their physical and public presence in the space. Place is the Space is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Dominic Molon, Chief Curator, and Brad Cloepfil, Founding Principal, Allied Works Architecture. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog that focuses on the artists and their respective projects; an annotated visual history of CAM; and a scholarly appreciation of the building by Bruce Lindsey, Dean of the School of Architecture at Washington University, St. Louis. EAC finds partner for bench project By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

oon visitors to the Edwardsville Arts Center will be able to sit outside on new benches and enjoy the sculpture garden thanks to collaboration between the EAC and the nonprofit organization St. Louis Artworks.
The collaboration began when Dan Willis, an Edwardsville resident who joined the EAC board last June, learned about the St. Louis Artworks program from Joel Fuoss, a co-worker at Trivers Associates where both are architects. Fuoss is also the chairman of the board for St. Louis Artworks. He described the organization’s mission as “basically educating and training mostly disadvantaged inner city youth in employment training with really the vehicle for that being art.” Founded in 1993, St. Louis Artworks first began as a sixweek summer-only program that hired a select group of young adults, ages 14 to 19, to work as apprentices with some of the region’s most notable artists. The six-week curriculum teaches the teen-apprentices not only the artistic discipline but also the business of being an artist. Working on commissioned artwork, apprentices gain experience meeting clients, preparing a project budget and seeing their work installed. The program has since grown to include a 12 week program in the fall and spring as well. “The students apply for a position,” Fuoss explained. “They go through an interview process. Then we select from that our group – this year about 86 kids – that we hire for six weeks to work with different clients throughout the area for specific
artwork projects. Those 86 students come from a pool of about 500 applications, and most of the students are city of St. Louis residents or St. Louis County.” The projects they work on range from outdoor furniture such as the benches for the EAC, to printmaking to murals. “We just finished up a rain barrel project with MSD,” Fuoss pointed out. “We have a wide range.” “What’s unique about us is that our apprentices are paid to do this work. They do get a paycheck, but then we supplement that with financial training with partners like Wells Fargo, and credit etiquette. Equifax is one of our funders,” Fuoss further elaborated. “We have etiquette training where we have a dinner and we’ll teach them how to eat during a business session – what utensils to use, what things to do and not do. We have social workers that help them through other issues that they may have – personal or private issues they may be dealing with – or helping them apply to colleges or business schools. It’s not just a job, and it’s not just a social endeavor as well, but a mix of both.” While Artworks is known in St. Louis for its production of bike racks, Fuoss said that they had begun a new venture called Bloom Works “that focuses on sustainable approaches and environmental site furniture that has a focus on outdoor components.” “I found out that one of the areas where they are they are trying to expound on is bench projects, and benches were kind of a need,” Willis said of why he pursued this collaboration for the EAC. “We have a greater need for benches right now than a bike rack. We need some seating out in the sculpture garden and what better way to collaborate with these guys and have it as an art piece as
well. Collaborating with another nonprofit has been a nice partnership.” After meeting with St. Louis Artwork to establish the EAC’s goals for the sculpture garden, the students traveled to the EAC. “We introduced them to the site and they began to sketch and create ideas,” Willis said. “The third meeting was yesterday – with the presentation of the designs. They gave us a handful of boards, and we’re going to select three for the three benches. From there, they will start production and the benches will be installed in late July.” Sponsors are being sought for the bench projects. Three benches, at $1,000 each, are proposed for the EAC. Both Willis and Fuoss have another connection to Edwardsville. They both worked on the new SIUE Arts and Design building renovations. “Joel was a project architect – he and I worked on that project for the last three years. We’re finishing up the fourth phase of construction currently,” Willis noted. “And Joel is over there about every other week if not every week.” “SIU Edwardsville is a big supporter of ours,” Fuoss added. “We have teaching artists that come from SIU Edwardsville art school. One SIUE student, Amanda Arnett, is one of the mentors for the bench project. And our executive director is a graduate of the art school. So we have a lot of connections with the artists and faculty there.” Artwork including paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures produced by the St. Louis Artworks’ apprentices will be sold at the Final Summer Sale which takes place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on July 18 at the Old North Studio located at 2707 N. 14th Street in St. Louis. omen have found many ways to make their creative mark on the world around them despite their efforts often going unrecognized. A new show at the Edwardsville Arts Center, “Women’s Marks,” will address this issue by putting the spotlight firmly on the work of area female artists and their methods of creative expression.
“Women’s Marks” opens July 26 with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The show runs through Aug. 30. The exhibition is being sponsored by Reality Salon & Spa in Edwardsville, which donated funds to ensure the success of this exhibition. Curator and EAC Board Director Pat Quinn explained that this is the first time the EAC has produced a show exclusively for women and their art. She said the center originally created the exhibition in conjunction with Women’s History Month back in February as a way to continue “the celebration of women and their creativity, ingenuity and strength.”
“This exhibition is to raise awareness for the young women, who are just starting out, that art can be part of their lives,” added Quinn. Because the show’s purpose is to highlight “women’s marks” in general, it will include artwork from all mediums, including painting, handmade paper, textiles, photography and ceramics. Nearly a dozen artists from both the St. Louis region and beyond are taking part in the show. They include: Cindy Buob, Katherine Strause, Deb Douglas, Elizabeth Adams-Marks, Nicole Ottwell, Annie Pennington, Casey Maul, Carmelita Nunez, Dionna Raedeke, Patti Sheppard and Jennifer Bryant. Quinn said that when it came to selecting the artists for the show, the center sought female artists who had either not previously shown their work with the EAC before or had not shown their work lately. She said each artist has a local connection with the Edwardsville community in some way, including having lived, worked or studied here. The show will highlight the significance of women’s creative expression, which historically has not been as recognized or publicized as the work of male artists. “Today that is changing, and has come a long

way, although there still is a disparity,” said Quinn. She said there could be several reasons for this. She said one possibility may have to do with “antiquated gender roles and duties of males and females in society.” Another possibility, according to Quinn, could be due to the types of images and materials women use to create their art. She gave the examples of artists Mary Cassatt, who frequently painted children, and Georgia O’Keefe, who painted flowers. She also cited artwork created using traditional “women’s work” methods such as quilting. This, Quinn said, was not previously considered credible enough as artwork to be in the public art work. Fortunately, there is now an increasing amount of female artists working in a variety of mediums to “make their mark” on the world. The EAC’s annual quilt show, though not strictly limited to female artists, is an

example of how traditional female artwork has been showcased by the center. In fact, last year’s “Cornucopia of Quilts” exhibition was the most successful show the EAC has ever had, with more than 800 people coming through its doors. And thanks to shows like that and “Women’s Marks,” female artists are at last getting the opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience. Visitors who view this exhibition should also take time to check out the work of SIUE student Jessica Hatfield. Her work will be exhibited in the student gallery throughout this exhibition. I
n between the psychedelic rock of the ‘70s and the guitar-smashing hair bands of the ‘80s, there was a brief moment in music when a smoother sound ruled the airwaves. Step aboard that ship again with the best of ‘70s and ‘80s soft rock when Sail Rock arrives at The Family Arena on Aug. 19.
The superstar line up includes Christopher Cross, Orleans, Gary Wright, John Ford Coley, Player, Robbie Dupree and Firefall. For fans of soft rock, this is a musical event not to be missed. Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene as the biggest new star of 1980 with a series of smoothly sophisticated ballads that virtually defined adult contemporary radio. His 1980 self-titled debut album with the lead single "Ride Like the Wind" rocketed to the No. 2 spot while the massive success of the second single, "Sailing," made Cross a superstar. He went on to achieve two more Top 20 hits, "Never Be the Same" and "Say You'll Be Mine.” Cross made history with an unprecedented and record-setting five Grammys in 1981, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Sailing." He also scored a second number one hit, as well as an Academy Award, with "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)." For 40 years the members of Orleans have been creating musical history together. The band began life as a favorite at colleges and clubs in the Northeast United States before finding Top 10 success with nowclassic hits such as “Still the One”, “Dance with Me” and “Love Takes Time.” Since those early years, Orleans has done both studio and live collaborations with industry greats Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Little Feat and others. Although the death of founding member Larry Hoppen in July,
2012 left an irreplaceable void in the band, the remaining members carry on his memory through the music he helped to create. Gary Wright has spent more than 30 years shattering conventional ideas about how to make chart-topping records. His classic songs "Dream Weaver," "Love is Alive" and Really Want You" have proven their genius by achieving hit status in three different decades. Wright's wizardry has also extended to changing the very sound of contemporary pop. John Ford Coley is best known as one half of the Grammynominated duo England Dan and John Ford Coley. He has spent decades touring, writing, recording, and producing. He has become a legend in the music industry thanks to the success of hit songs, including “I'd Really Love To See You Tonight," "Nights Are Forever Without You" and "Love Is The Answer." Foley is classically trained on piano and an avid guitarist. He continues with an active roster
performing the platinum and gold record hits for audiences around the world. When you think of ‘70s rock, Player is one of those bands that immediately come to mind. The band was voted by Billboard Magazine's honor roll as Best New Single Artist for 1978 for the song “Baby Come Back.” This was immediately followed by their top ten hit, “This Time I'm In It For Love.” Player began as a chance meeting between Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley, in 1977. The band also added keyboard/
synthesizer player Wayne Cook, former band member of Steppenwolf, as a session artist. A few short months later, with massive radio play, Player had an international number one hit single with “Baby Come Back.” The song broke on the radio in October of 1977 and reached number one early January 1978. Robbie Dupree’s debut selftitled album yielded two Top 10 singles, "Steal Away" and "Hot Rod Hearts," and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. To date, "Steal Away" has been played on American radio almost three million times. Over the past 25 years, Dupree has released 11 albums. His latest album, “Arc of a Romance,” features covers of the songs that most influenced his career. Firefall’s mellow, easy countryrock sound coupled with a penchant for pop melodies and high-pitched harmonies produced a series of successful LPs in the late '70s. The group released a series of chart singles, including the hit "You Are the Woman," "Just Remember I Love You," and "Strange Way.” Sail Rock will take place at 7:30 p.m. (doors 6:30 p.m.) on Aug. 15 at The Family Arena, located at 2002 Arena Parkway in St. Charles. Music Tuning in Steely Dan to appear at the Peabody Legendary jazz-rock icons Walter Becker and Donald Fagen have announced that Steely Dan will hit the road again in 2013, taking their Mood Swings: 8 Miles To Pancake Day Tour to over four dozen stops throughout North America. Opening in Atlantic City on July 19, the tour hits major markets including Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston, with additional special engagements to be announced soon. Family Focus Dazzling performers return to Jamestown Mall By KRISTA WILKINSON MIDGLEY Of The Edge

et ready for a sensory overload when the dazzling lights and pulsating sounds of UniverSoul Circus comes to town. The show is now playing through July 28 under the red and yellow big top at Jamestown Mall in Florissant. Now in its 19th year, this highly interactive show combines circus arts, theater, and music that spans genres including pop, classic R&B, Latin, hip hop, jazz and gospel. It embraces and celebrates the unique and familiar aspects of pop culture globally by bringing them center stage with a cast of international performers. UniverSoul Circus is rated as one of the top three circuses in America along with Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey and Cirque du Soleil. This fresh approach to family friendly live entertainment has garnered UniverSoul Circus a coveted spot as one of Ticketmaster’s top ten most requested family events, along with other shows including Sesame Street Live, Disney on Ice, and Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Concert and theater promoter Cedric Walker founded the UniverSoul Circus in 1994 in Atlanta. The show is the result of Walker’s lifelong love of the circus combined with a passionate entrepreneurial spirit that began with a shoe shine business at the age of six. In 2013, UniverSoul will perform more than 500 shows in 43 major markets split between two separately touring circuses. The
UniverSoul Circus 2013 production, entitled the “Turn’t Up Tour,” features new acts, including a neckbreaking head balancing act from Vietnam, Comedy Cat Illusions featuring a live tiger and a troupe of female contortionists from Ethiopia. This sensational line up features artists handpicked from across the United States, as well as Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Vietnam, South Africa, Russia, Ethiopia and West Africa. Bright, bold colors are a hallmark of UniverSoul Circus and that extends to the show’s brand new big top tent featuring red and yellow stripes and purple accents. With a mast standing 70-feet tall at its highest peak and spanning 158-feet in diameter, the new tent arrived in North America late last year and
accommodates 2,278 seats. The tent was designed and constructed in collaboration with the famed Italian design firm Canobbio. The new 26,000-square-foot tent system includes the Big Top, Concessions Tent, Ticket Takers Tent and the Artist Entrance. UniverSoul Circus Founder and President Cedric Walker stated in a press release that for 2013, “UniverSoul Circus has reached a new level of exuberance and energy never before witnessed under the big top. The energy level is heightened. Bottom line – this show is on fire…it’s turn’t up!” he stated. According to Walker, fans will witness dynamic young performers who combine the past with the future to create groundbreaking performance art that is unique in
the circus world. He stated: “Our event is all about lifting spirits. Whether you’re sitting on the edge of your chair with excitement, dancing to the music or highfiving our performers as they pass through the aisles, UniverSoul Circus is designed to move the audiences in a positive way.” The show’s creative team includes Walker, who regularly travels the globe to find amazing talent, and award winning live entertainment production designer Tom Marzullo. Marzullo has designed and/or managed the production of major international tours for some of the biggest names in show business, including T-Pain, KISS, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo and Prince. Marzullo designed, produced and managed the production for Justin
Bieber’s international My World Tour, which earned Marzullo the 2010 Tour Link Top Dog Award for Production Manager of the Year.
