Parks and Rec Alton's Riverview Park Not easy to get to but worth the effort, Alton's Riverview Park sits on a bluff – literally – overlooking the Mississippi River. There are no playground or true picnic facilities, but the view is spectacular and the gardens and historic feel make for a pleasant way to spend an hour. To reach the park, take State Street to Bluff Street and head west. Turn left onto Riverview Drive to reach the park. (Note: This is a hilly area and you will encounter rough, brick streets.) People People planner Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017. Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between. As the road meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous motes. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road. Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west. Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places

that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 Park-In Theatre. Artifacts include neon signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer. Route 66 opened on Nov. 11, 1926, as the major highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants west to find a new life. It carried military transports through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California. Route 66 bore witness to the rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps. By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete. The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that. Although Route 66 is long gone, relics of it still remain across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an adventure and mom-and-pop diners and motels ruled the road. Admission is free.

The Missouri History Museum is located in Forest Park. For more information, visit www.mohistory.org.

From IMAX Entertainment, "A Beautiful Planet", the latest space documentary from director Toni Myers and made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), opened at the Saint Louis Science Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on May 13. The film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and is narrated by Academy Awardwinner Jennifer Lawrence. Tickets are on sale at slsc.org. “We are very excited to be launching 'A Beautiful Planet' in the OMNIMAX Theater. This film gives our audiences a breathtaking view of our home planet as can only be experienced on our giant dome screen,” said Jackie Mollet, Managing Director Visitor Services at the Saint Louis Science Center. “The images will leave a lasting impression on visitors, helping us understand the impact we make on a global scale. The fact that all of the images of earth are captured by astronauts on the International Space Station, allows us a peek into their world and their perspective. The musical soundtrack and Jennifer Lawrence’s narration add to the experience of making this the next, classic IMAX film.” "A Beautiful Planet"reunites much of the filmmaking team from Hubble 3D and Space Station 3D, led by producer and director Toni Myers, who also wrote and edited the film. Director of photography James Neihouse, ASC, served as the astronaut training manager. Graeme Ferguson, IMAX co-founder and pioneer producer of many IMAX space films, is the executive producer, and Judy Carroll is the film’s co-producer. Marsha Ivins also served as space operations consultant on the film. The music is composed by Micky Erbe and Maribeth Solomon. Sound design is by Peter Thillaye. The IMAX release of A Beautiful Planet will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie. "The BFG"

There's a secret about children that Steven Spielberg, Melissa Mathison and Roald Dahl have always known — that no matter how innocent, kids are as capable of understanding darkness as adults, and sometimes even more so. It's not that it's some completely unacknowledged truth, but it is one that rarely seems to permeate what we consider "children's entertainment" in any real way. It just makes adults too uncomfortable. It's also the reason why the under-10 set flocks to Dahl. A measured embrace of the deep menace in Dahl's words is why this long-time-coming adaptation of his 1982 book "The BFG " not only succeeds, but shines. It's not just some pleasant romp into the world of giants. It's an honest-to-goodness, gut punch of a journey, crackling with heart, uncertainty, and overflowing with all-out wonder. There's really no other way to tell a story about an orphan who is captured by a giant and taken to a land crawling with much larger giants who like the taste of human beings, or "beens" as they're called. The orphan, Sophie, is played by the newcomer Ruby Barnhill. Sporting a Dorothy Hamill haircut and rounded glasses, this little brunette moppet is a delightful revelation who is at turns feisty, lovable and even a little annoying (in a good way). In other words, she's a believable kid — a result that Spielberg has been coaxing out of child actors since "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Thankfully, Sophie has been taken not by man-eaters, but the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance, who was just in Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies"), who prefers to create dreams for the children of England, not snack on them. But Sophie, who lays awake night after night, saw him gliding through the streets of London and she can't be trusted with the knowledge that giants really do exist, no matter how pure her intentions. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action/peril, some scary moments and brief rude humor." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 117 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Independence Day: Resurgence"

If you have any interest in a sequel to "Independence Day," you'll likely not be disappointed by the improbably enjoyable "Independence Day: Resurgence ." It's silly, lightas-air popcorn entertainment. Director Roland Emmerich's conceit is simple and hilariously dumb: What would happen if 20 years after aliens invaded, they came back in a 3,000-mile-wide ship? It's both a redux of the first film — and also not. The world has changed in the two decades since those hovering ships destroyed the White House and most major cities around the globe, and alien defense is now basically a subset of every military outfit — not just some shadowy undercover operation in an undisclosed base in the middle of the desert. Misunderstood genius David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) is now the first guy they call, not the one knocking at the door trying to persuade everyone to listen. His dad, Julius (Judd Hirsch), wrote a memoir about the whole saving-the-Earth thing. And the generation of kiddos from the first movie have seemingly devoted themselves to their government, including the president's daughter, Patricia (Maika Monroe), and Dylan Hiller (Jessie T. Usher), son of Vivica A. Fox's Jasmine Hiller and stepson of Will Smith's Steven Hiller, who died years ago and is memorialized as a national hero. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi action and destruction, and for some language." RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Secret Life of Pets"

Any pet owner who's imbued their furry or feathered friends with deep thoughts and mysterious intentions will relate to the imagination behind "The Secret Life of Pets ." It may not have the emotional resonance of a Pixar movie, but with its playful premise, endearing performances and outstanding score by Alexandre Desplat, "Pets" is fun, family (and animal)-friendly fare. People's favorite non-speaking companions are brought to life here by Illumination Entertainment (the studio behind "Despicable Me") and given voice by an all-star cast that includes Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate and Albert Brooks. Plot-wise, "Pets" follows the path Pixar set with talking toys 20 years ago in "Toy Story": Two would-be rivals fighting for the love of their owner are forced to unite for a common cause. Little terrier Max (C.K.) is the top dog in the life of his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper), and a leader among the other house pets in their New York City apartment building, including neighbor Pomeranian Gidget (Slate), and the fat cat next door, Chloe (Lake Bell). But his exalted position is threatened when Katie brings home a giant, fluffy mutt named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). Like Woody and Buzz, Max and Duke are instantly at odds. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action and some rude humor." RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Captain Fantastic"

"Captain Fantastic " is about the fantasy of being able to create a perfect world for your children, and the crushing realization that such control is ultimately impossible. Ben (Viggo Mortensen) pursues this ideal in a particularly extreme way — by removing his family from society altogether and creating his own little utopia in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. We meet the family in the midst of a hunt. They're all covered in camouflaging mud. The eldest, Bo (George MacKay), slaughters an animal, and Ben tells him that he is a man now. Primitive though the ritual may be, this family is not. Far from it. They are survivalist philosopher kings — highly educated and extremely self-sufficient. Ranging in age from single digits to late teens, the six children, Nai (Charlie Shotwell), Zaja (Shree Crooks), Rellian (Nicholas Hamilton, who resembles young River Phoenix), Vespyr (Annalise Basso), Kielyr (Samantha Isler) and Bo have been molded in Ben's very specific image. And, for the most part, they worship their father and their lifestyle — Noam Chomsky day and all. The casting director should win an award for finding these truly excellent young performers, who shine alongside the always wonderful Mortensen. But the cracks are starting to show in this little family unit, and not just because normal hormones and attitudes are emerging. "I'm not a Trotskyist any more. I'm a Maoist!" Bo says in an angsty teenage huff at one point. No, there is something more serious festering. Their mother, Leslie (Trin Miller), has been away for three months, hospitalized with severe depression. The kids miss her dearly, and her absence is becoming an issue. But we never get the chance to really meet her. Ben finds out early in the film that she's killed herself. He tells the kids this fact very frankly. Ben never lies to his children. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and brief graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Star Trek Beyond"

In the previous "Star Trek" installment, Spock cried. In the latest, "Star Trek Beyond," he laughs. And not just a little snicker, either, but a belly-full one. What bold explorations into the farthest reaches of the galaxy hold for Spock no one knows. A sigh? A hiccup? "Star Trek Beyond," like most of the rebooted properties flying around our movie theaters, delights in nostalgically resurrecting iconic characters and tweaking them anew. The balance is a delicate one, as seen in the pre-release debate around this film revealing Sulu (John Cho but formerly played by LGBT icon George Takei) as gay. The scene in question turns out to be a mere moment, lightly handled, showing Sulu greeting his same-sex partner and their daughter after a long mission. It's all expressed with just a few arms tenderly draped across shoulders. And it's the kind of welcome touch that director Justin Lin, the "Fast & Furious" veteran who takes over for J.J. Abrams, has brought to this pleasingly episode-like installment. The film finds a bored Enterprise finishing up a fiveyear tour in deep space. The (albeit brief) change of pace is immediately appreciated. The last two beefed-up "Star Trek" movies, as if overcompensating for decades of Trekkie nerd-dome, threatened to make the once brainy "Star Trek" less distinct from other mega-sized sci-fi adventures — just another clothesline of CGI set pieces strung together. Like its recent predecessors, "Star Trek Beyond" is mostly an assortment of effects-heavy scenes with bits of talking in between. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi action and violence." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Absolutely Fabulous"

Pour some Champagne, light a smoke and put on something gorgeous, dahling, because the women of "Absolutely Fabulous" are back. It's been 24 years since Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley made their debut as hard-partying best friends Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone on the BBC sitcom, and they bring the same outrageous boozy charm to their big-screen adventure, "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie." They've also brought along some familiar faces, including Eddy's put-upon daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha), and long-suffering assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks), as well as a slew of celebrities, models and designers in delightful cameos. Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson and Chris Colfer play small roles. Fans of the series will be relieved to see that Eddy (Saunders, who created the show and wrote the film's screenplay) and Patsy (Lumley) haven't matured a bit during their time away from the screen. But no prior knowledge of the characters is needed to appreciate such overblown selfishness and superficiality in a post-Kardashian world. An opening scene shows Patsy injecting her own face and lips with a syringe as part of her regular get-ready routine. "You need to be using fetus blood and a little spritz of afterbirth," she advises her friend. Patsy is a successful magazine editor, while Eddy's career in fashion public relations has stalled. She dreams of representing supermodel Kate Moss — who happens to be a guest at Patsy's London fashion show — but their meeting is disastrous: Eddy accidentally pushes the supermodel into the Thames and becomes a pariah blamed for her death, which is depicted as an international tragedy. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language including sexual references, and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Fans of the series will be relieved to see that Eddy (Saunders, who created the show and wrote the film's screenplay) and Patsy (Lumley) haven't matured a bit during their time away from the screen. Determined to avoid punishment, Eddy and Patsy flee to the French Riviera, where they try to keep a low profile while maintaining their drug-fueled, consumption-based lifestyle. Directed by Mandie Fletcher and s u mp t uou s ly ph ot og r ap he d b y Ch r is G o o d g e r, t h e f i l m l a n g u i s h e s i n t h e intoxicating turquoise waters and terraced hills of Cote d'Azur, a bittersweet sight in the aftermath of this month's Bastille Day massacre in Nice.

The settings are fittingly luxe and Eddy and Patsy's adventures have been appropriately amped-up for the big screen — witness a chase scene where they barrel down narrow cobblestone streets in a runaway rickshaw. Saunders and Lumley are every fiber their alter egos. But this parody of a lavish life of irresponsibility and consumption doesn't mean what it did when "Ab Fab" first hit in the early 1990s. Today, many Kardashians and "Real Housewives" live this parody as reality everyday on TV. Instead of appearing obviously ridiculous, Eddy and Patsy's indulgent lifestyle looks almost aspirational in an atmosphere of endless selfies and instant fame. It's hard to go over the top with what's already over the top.

"Star Trek Beyond" a great time at the movies By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I found myself this week with significantly more down time that I'm used to. During this blissful period of rest and relaxation I dove deep into a special edition of "Time" magazine that celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Star Trek franchise. From humble beginnings on NBC in 1966, to this weekend's vaunted reception at Comic-Con announcing the Fall's debut of the sixth television series, "Star Trek" is everywhere. The proximal timing to Paramount's release of "Star Trek Beyond" is surely no coincidence. I jumped at my first chance to get into the cinema and check it out. After the debacle of 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness", the rebooted feature franchise - of which this is

the thirteenth - is starting to show the signs of fading from relevance, but I still quite enjoy the humor and styling of this cast and crew. Chris Pine continues to shine as James T. Kirk. Our hero is also starting to show signs of wear and tear. During the maudlin opening scenes he narrates aloud a log entry that shows us where his head's at: tiring of constant searching and dangerous exploration. He's ready to take the next step in his career, a vice-admiralty position, that would allow him to settle into a more structured future that could potentially include a chance at starting a family without the constant danger of intergalactic war looming outside of his viewscreen. In fact, the future is on the minds of all of his daring and reliable crew. They're looking forward to a much

needed shore leave at the Yorktown, a deep-space star station home to a million people and a wealth of distraction. Their visit is short-lived. Answering the bell when a lone escaping survivor (Lydia Wilson) of a crash landing appears, Kirk whisks the Enterprise back into a dangerous nebula only to be ambushed by a swarm of alien ships that buzz about, severing the engines and sending the saucer section crash landing onto an uncharted planet below. Here the story takes a basic approach to reuniting the leads after they're sprinkled hither and yon in small parties. Kirk and Chekov (the late Anton Yelchin) seek the reason for their situation. Scotty (co-writer Simon Pegg) befriends another crash survivor (Sofia Boutella) who shows him the scavenging that's kept her alive for years. Bones (Karl Urban)

and Spock (Zachary Quinto) battle grave injuries while Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Sulu (John Cho) work to subvert the enemy leader, Krall (Idris Elba, unrecognizable under alien makeup), from their position as his prisoners before he can launch his greater objective to destroy all of the Federation. "Beyond" captures the essence of what makes Star Trek great in the first place - the very first place. Gene Roddenberry's characters were diverse (this movie adds the franchise's first gay Starfleet officer), yet unified. They were well-trained and highly-intelligent, but they never stopped having a reckless heroism when overcoming obstacles that got in their way. The bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise remains an enviable team worthy of admiration by fans both old

August 4, 2016

and new. Those same traits are magnified in this picture that uses something another great scifi franchise also recently used to great success: don't forsake what got you here in the first place. Like "The Force Awakens" did last year, "Beyond" remembers what made it remarkable and delivers again. Jim Kirk is nothing but a thinking man's Han Solo. And the Enterprise - I'll say it - is a better ride that the Millennium Falcon. Pepper in enough back story (concerning the U.S.S. Franklin) and some smart close-quarters combat and I'm happy to call it a great time at the movies! "Star Trek Beyond" runs 120 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence. I give this film three stars out of four.

Religion Religion briefs Vatican sets Albania's beatification of 38 martyrs

TIRANA , Albania (AP) — The Catholic Church in Albania says the Vatican has set Nov. 5 as the day of beatification of 38 Albanian religious martyrs killed by the former communist regime. In April, Pope Francis officially recognized as martyrs Archbishop Vincens Prenushi and 37 other priests who died in prison or were murdered in 1945-1974 by the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha's regime, the church said a statement Wednesday. Hoxha's regime banned religion In 1967 and persecuted its leaders and believers. During Francis' visit to Tirana in 2014, big posters of the 38 clergy were placed along the Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard in the capital. Francis held up Albania, with a majority of Muslims and also with Orthodox and Catholic communities, as a model for interfaith harmony.

Mississippi leaders divided on religious-beliefs law appeal

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi's Democratic attorney general says he won't join the Republican governor in appealing a federal judge's ruling that blocked a state law on religious objections to gay marriage. Attorney General Jim Hood said a continued legal fight would be "divisive and expensive" in a state that's already

struggling with a tight budget. The law sought to protect three beliefs: That marriage is only between a man and a woman; that sex should only take place in such a marriage; and that a person's gender is determined at birth and cannot be altered. Hood says that Mississippi has no law that would force clergy members to perform weddings for same-sex couples, and the state enacted a Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 2014 that would protect private businesspeople and others from violating their own beliefs.

Nun who stood up to Billy the Kid to be subject of TV series

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An Italian-born nun who once challenged Billy the Kid and later opened New Mexico hospitals and schools will soon be the subject of a TV series. An Albuquerque production company is scheduled Wednesday to announce a new project about Sister Blandina Segale. Saint Hood Productions will oversee the production "At the End of the Santa Fe Trail" just as the Roman Catholic Church is examining the 19th-Century nun for possible Sainthood. Segale, a nun with the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and an advocate for Hispanics and Native Americans, founded schools in New Mexico and St. Joseph Hospital. Her encounters with Old West outlaws became the subject of an episode of the CBS series "Death Valley Days," titled "The Fastest Nun in the West." She worked as an educator and social worker in Ohio, Colorado and New Mexico.

NY candidate's Quaker faith prompts threatening online posts

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police have been asked to investigate threatening online comments directed at state Senate candidate Sara Niccoli, whose Quaker faith prohibits her from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Niccoli, a Democrat and the town supervisor of Palatine, says Wednesday that she believes the attacks were orchestrated by her opponent, Republican. Sen. George Amedore. Amedore denies any responsibility. The comments about Niccoli were placed on a Facebook page that criticized her refusal to say the pledge. The page has since been deleted. Commenters called for Niccoli's death and said she should be run out of the country. Quaker teaching prohibits the swearing of oaths. Two Palatine Town Boardmembers wrote to State Police Tuesday seeking an investigation into what they called "hateful" attacks on Niccoli and her religious liberty.

People vote in churches and synagogues and a mosque

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Palm Beach County voters have been assigned to polling stations in about 80 Christian churches and five synagogues or Jewish centers this year, along with schools, government buildings and other locations. Until last week, a single mosque was part of this mix. County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher had invited the Islamic Center of Boca Raton to host a polling site for the Aug. 30 Florida primary and Nov. 8 general elections.

Seoul Taco in St. Louis By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Do you like Korean cuisine? How about Mexican food? Combine them and you get the latest stop on the “You Gotta Eat” express — Seoul Taco. My buddy Mike and I recently made a pit stop at Seoul Taco's restaurant in The Loop in St. Louis prior to taking in a concert at The Pageant. The locale found at 6665 Delmar Blvd. in St. Louis is one of five Seoul Taco locations. The fusion phenomenon started as a food truck and has soared into orbit from there. The joint in The Loop was next and since there have been venues added in Champaign, Chicago and Columbia, Mo. The idea of Seoul Taco is weird and creative at the same time, but the way they run with it is genius. Everything from the food to the décor is a hodgepodge of Mexican and Asian. Check out murals of luchadors wearing Tae Kwon Do uniforms on the wall, quite witty. The food is where you really find the combo with burritos, tacos and nachos highlighted by kimchi and takes on Korean spices. They even offer gogi bowls if that's what you're into. Mike was a little confused and weary when we arrived. He just heard the word taco in the name of the restaurant and was sold. When I explained the mad scientist fusion idea he quickly became hesitant. He had never tried Korean food and was scared of what he was getting himself into. I assured him it would be fine and he was quickly transformed into a fan. He went with two chicken tacos and a Jarritos mandarin orange soda. Mike's tacos came with a Korean salad mix, green onions, the

18

Seoul sauce, crushed sesame seeds, a wedge of lime and of course the chicken. He looked puzzled with his first bite, explaining it as good but weird. I think weird stands for uniqueness, which there is a lot of at Seoul Taco. As for his Jarritos soda, which is a line of soft drinks made in Mexico with all fruit flavors, he was a huge fan. Jarritos is said to be more carbonated than sodas in the United States. He said the flavor popped with each drink. I dredged a little deeper into the menu, so my food came a little later. I selected the chicken nachos for us to share, but then went with a spicy pork burrito, a side of kimchi slaw

On the Edge of the Weekend

and washed it down with a Contact High, a delicious summer wheat ale by 4 Hands Brewery in St. Louis. I'll start with the nachos. They consisted of the chopped up chicken on a bed of corn tortilla chips, with green onions, roasted sesame seeds, sour cream, kimchi and queso blanco. It's those last two ingredients that put this flavorful masterpiece over the top in uniqueness. Kimchi is of course the epitome of Korean cuisine, while the queso blanco white cheese is a staple in Mexican dishes. I went as far as taking a piece of kimchi on a tortilla chip and lathered it in cheese to get the full effect. East met West on my palate,

joining forces to create some sort of super nachos which I've never encountered anywhere else. It made me want to do the Mexican hat dance and roundhouse kick something at the same time. The best of my order was the kimchi slaw though. This delicious slaw had an American cole slaw twist to it with vinegar and just a slight kick to it. Traditional kimchi can get quite spicy. I could have eaten a lot more of this stuff. It is definitely a Seoul Taco staple. The final part of my meal was by far the biggest, the spicy pork burrito. This plump specimen of Mexican cuisine was stuffed with some odd flavors, starting

with the kimchi fried rice. It also included lettuce, cheese, carrots, green onions, sour cream and Seoul sauces. It was good, but far removed from a traditional burrito in taste, clinging to the moniker only by appearance. I guess I would have liked to have some black beans or a little corn or pico de gallo thrown in there to give it a little more of a Mexican twist, but I'm not really complaining, it was still good and definitely unique. As for the rest of the menu, there are also quesadillas and the gogi bowls, comprised of rice, fresh veggies, a fried egg, carrots, green onions, sesame oil and spicy Gochujang Pepper Sauce with your choice of filling. The fillings are steak, chicken, spicy pork and tofu. Sides include that delectable kimchi slaw, traditional kimchi or the kimchi fried rice. Bottled water, soda and beer are available for beverages. They have a nice craft beer selection. So it's a small menu, but it doesn't take much to awaken your palate here. I doubt you've ever encountered anything like it. Seoul Taco has a little soul, too. Throughout Mike and I's meal we were serenaded with classic 90s rap music by artists such as Snoop Doggy Dogg, Eazy E and Ice Cube, among others. There is even a wall of old boom boxes painted in various bright yellow, green and blue colors when you first enter the restaurant. Price-wise it won't break you either. Everything on the menu is under $10. That delicious kimchi slaw is only $2 for a side order. So if you like Korean and Mexican food and have always wondered what they tasted like together, or you just enjoy fantastic, unique cuisine, then Seoul Taco is a place to visit when you gotta eat.

The Arts For The Edge Tickets for "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" and "Once" at the Fabulous Fox Theatre went on sale Saturday, July 16 and online at MetroTix.com, by phone at 314534-1111 and in person at the Fox Theatre Box office. Ticket prices for "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" start at $20; ticket prices for "Once" start at $25. Both shows are part of the Fabulous Fox’s 2016 – 2017 U.S. Bank Broadway series. "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" is the first production in the six-show season ticket package; "Once" is an off-series special. "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" – September 13–25, 2016 Getting away with murder can be so much fun… and there’s no better proof than the knock-‘em-dead hit show that’s earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award® for Best Musical—"A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder"! As one most gentlemanly NPR critic put it, “I’ve never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical!” Gentleman's Guide tells the story of Monty, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by - you guessed it - eliminating the eight relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way. All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress, his fiancée and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance… and be done in time for tea. The Hollywood Reporter raves, “Gentleman's Guide restores our faith in musical comedy.” "Once" – September 30–October 2, 2016 Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, "Once" is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, "Once" tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give

up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally

captivating and theatrically breathtaking, "Once" draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams... not living in fear... and the power of music to connect all of us. Single ticket on sale dates for the remaining shows in the 2016 – 2017

The Arts

For The Edge

Alexandre da Cunha's Mix (Americana) has been installed at Laumeir Sculpture Park.

Outdoor piece marks Laumeier's anniversary For The Edge Laumeier Sculpture Park announced the recent installation of Alexandre da Cunha’s Mix (Americana), 2013 in honor of the Park’s 40th Anniversary year. The large-scale artwork was gifted to Laumeier’s Permanent Collection by the Brazilian artist and CRG Gallery, New York, following exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) as the fifth MCA Plaza Project. The sculpture is now on view in Laumeier’s Museum Circle, visible from the Lower Entrance parking lots. Mix (Americana) is a full-scale cement mixer. Polished and painted in a patriotic red, white and blue, the sculpture has been stripped of its mixing duty on the back of a truck and staged instead as a functional sundial. When viewers peek inside the steel hallowed chamber, light gently reflects and refracts, creating an intricate web of shadows and shapes, giving splendor and mystery to the industrial barrel. Within the context of Laumeier ’s green space, Mix (Americana) inspires discussion about the suburban landscape and the complex meeting point between natural and manmade environments. “Da Cunha’s artwork is a sly commentary on how we now orient ourselves in the landscape using the concrete constructions of the urban world,” said Marilu Knode, Laumeier’s Executive Director. “Mix (Americana) is a meaningful addition to the artworks in the Park that frame our relationship to the environment in new ways.” Da Cunha’s artwork adds to Laumeier’s thematic focus of New Territories: BRICS, 2015–19. New Territories broadens our look at the world’s cultural zones as they have directly and indirectly impacted life in St. Louis. Projects, programs and activities twist the economic acronym BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa] beyond the market forces driving the global economy. About the Artist Alexandre da Cunha was born in 1969 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1996 from Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado – FAAP, São Paulo. Da Cunha attended Royal College of Art, London, and earned his Master of Arts from Chelsea College of Art, London, in 2000. He has had solo exhibitions at CRG Gallery, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo; Sommer & Kohl, Berlin; Thomas Dane Gallery, London; Centro Cultural Sao Paulo; Camden Arts Centre, London; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; and NAK, Aachen, Germany, among others. His work has been included in group exhibitions at

His selected museum collections include the Tate Modern, London; Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte; Inhotim - Instituto de Arte Contemporanea, Brumadinho; CIFO - Cisneros Collection, Miami; and Rennie Collection, Vancouver. Da Cunha lives and works in London. Laumeier will kick off its 40th Anniversary festivities with a free, outdoor performance of musical selections in celebration of the Park on Saturday, July 16, at 11:00 a.m. in the Public Plaza outside the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center. The event features Dr. James Henry with Vocal Point, Dr. Gail Fleming with Melodia and Vaughans Quartet, among others, and includes a presentation of the original composition Laumeier Sculpture Park Anthem, by Dr. Barbara Harbach. The performance is organized by Laumeier’s 2016 In-Residence: Composer Dr. Barbara Harbach and Conductor Dr. James Henry, both faculty at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Supported by the Ferring Family Foundation. In addition, the St. Louis County Council and the City of Sunset Hills both proclaimed Friday, July 1, 2016, “Laumeier Sculpture Park Day” in honor and celebration of 40 years of providing St. Louis residents and visitors with world-class artistic experiences, education programs and special events in the unique cultural landscape of the Park. More information about Laumeier’s unique history will be celebrated and shared throughout the year on Laumeier’s website and social media channels (Facebook and Instagram). Exhibitions scheduled for Laumeier ’s 40th Anniversary year include an indoor multimedia exhibition by Sowetoborn, Cape Town-based artist Mohau Modisakeng in the Whitaker Foundation Gallery at the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center and an outdoor exhibition by local sculptors Alison Ouellette-Kirby and Noah Kirby at the Ampitheater in the Way Field for the 2016 Kranzberg Exhibition Series. Both exhibitions open Saturday, November 5, 2016, and run through Sunday, January 29, 2017. Next spring, Laumeier will open a multisensory exhibition by Mexican new media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer,

supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, followed by an exhibition by Ghanaian-born conceptual artist Yvonne Osei for the 2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series, opening fall 2017. With these projects, Laumeier continues its legacy practice of bringing globally renowned artists to St. Louis. History of Laumeier Sculpture Park In 1968, Mrs. Matilda Laumeier bequeathed the first 72 acres of the future Laumeier Sculpture Park, together with a large stone house, to St. Louis County in memory of her husband, Henry Laumeier. In 1976, local artist Ernest Trova gifted 40 artworks to St. Louis County, and Laumeier Sculpture Park was dedicated as part of the St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation system on July 7, 1976. Today, Laumeier is a nonprofit, accredited art museum that operates in partnership with St. Louis County Parks. Projects and programs are supported by the Mark Twain Laumeier Endowment Fund, the Regional Arts Commission, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri Arts Council and the Arts and Education Council of St. Louis. Laumeier presents 60 works of large-scale outdoor sculpture in a 105-acre park available free to the public year-round, and serves 300,000 patrons annually through temporary exhibitions, education programs, public events and sculpture conservation. In 2015, Laumeier closed its first major capital campaign, Sculpting the Future, culminating in the renovation of the Laumeier’s 1917 Estate House into the Kranzberg Education Lab and the construction of the new Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center for exhibitions, programs and events. Laumeier Sculpture Park is a living laboratory where artists and audiences explore the relationship between contemporary art and the natural environment. Founded in 1976, Laumeier is one of the first and largest dedicated sculpture parks in the country, making it an institution of international significance as well as a unique complement to the cultural landscape of the St. Louis region. Projects and programs are supported by the Mark Twain Laumeier Endowment Fund, the Regional Arts Commission, the University of MissouriSt. Louis, Missouri Arts Council and the Arts and Education Council of St. Louis. Laumeier presents 60 works of largescale outdoor sculpture in a 105-acre park available free to the public year-round, and serves 300,000 patrons annually through temporary exhibitions, education programs, public events and sculpture exhibits.

Litchfield Tourism and Prairie Pickers would like to invite you to be an art vendor for the October 9, 2016 Litchfield Pickers Market! The Litchfield Pickers Market takes place every second Sunday of the month from 9 AM to 3 PM in downtown Litchfield beginning on the corner of Union Avenue (Route 16) and State Street. During the market, the streets are filled with around 100 vendors specializing in all items prior to 1980. During the October 9th Market, a special section will be allocated to Artisans and Crafters. All items must be handcrafted by participants, and no buy/sell or retail mass marketed merchandise is allowed. For registration requirements and an application, please log on to www.visitlitchfield.com/events or pick one up at 120 East Ryder Street in Litchfield. For questions call the Litchfield Tourism Office at 866-7335833.

to create—achievers, encoders, messengers, improvement, reformers, ingenuity, and guides. Achievers: Working outside the realm of fine arts, achievers often created works of art that were a testament to their own passionate vision or grandiose thought. For example, Marino Auruti intended his 11-foot Encyclopedic Palace to serve as a model for a 136-floor museum that would celebrate every achievement of humankind. Encoders: Winthrop Chandler, whose Scenic Overmantel oil painting on panel is included in the exhibition, can be viewed as an example of an encoder, who might blur the meanings of a creation to keep outsiders away or to maintain complete control over the art. Messengers: Artists like Martín Ramírez, whose Reina is featured in the exhibition, might create works that invite the viewer into their personal world by incorporating symbols that announce their visions or beliefs. Improvement: Represented in the exhibition by self-taught artists depicting their own refinements or achievements, or those attained by their subject, improvement is exemplified in Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog, a portrait by Ammi Phillips that emphasizes the genteelness of the young, 19th-century sitter. Reformers: Some self-taught artists driven to change the people and world around them. Works of art by reformers—including Ralph

Fasanella’s 1950 painting Subway R i d e r s — w e re i n t e n d e d t o b e transformative. Ingenuity: By elaborating on a practice through mechanical or visual inventiveness, some selftaught artists reveal an exceptional

The Saint Louis Art Museum will present Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum, an exhibition charting the development of folk art in America while pondering the motivations for artists who were at times considered to work outside of canonical art history. The ticketed exhibition will be on view now through Sept. 11. The exhibition explores the continuum of American folk art and the concept of a “self-taught genius” through more than 100 works of art from the Revolutionary War to contemporary times. W h e n S e l f - Ta u g h t G e n i u s premiered at the American Folk Art Museum in 2014, The New York Times called it “enthralling” and “an intellectually provocative effort to rethink the nature of artistic creativity.” Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, the exhibition and its national tour are made possible by generous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, as part of its 75th anniversary initiative. “Because folk art has not been a major collecting area for the Saint Louis Art Museum, we sought an exhibition that presents our visitors with works of exceptional quality that tell the story of a uniquely American artistic tradition,” said Brent R. Benjamin, Barbara B. Taylor Director of the Saint Louis Art Museum. Paintings, works on paper, textiles, decorative arts and sculpture are presented within context of seven perspectives from which artists are compelled
