The Treasure Shack Lamps – and a whole lot more By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge East Vandalia has become a place to shop for unique things. The shops along the roadway including the long-time shop – Maggie’s Primitive Cottage – were recently joined by Niko’s Antiques and Collectibles, located at 452a East Vandalia. And now, a new shop called The Treasure Shack, located at 452b East Vandalia, has opened. Kelly and Curt Lovsey of Edwardsville started the business nearly a week ago in the same place Maggie Schmitz started her business in 2003 – the little yellow building right behind Niko’s. “We are just hoping it will do well,” Kelly said. Kelly said she and her husband Curt have been involved in collecting unique things for years. Most recently, she said they have had booths at Trish’s Treasures in Maryville and the Historic Route 66 Flea Market off of the Chain of Rocks Road in Granite City. Kelly said they learned this

building on Vandalia was available and thought this would be a good space for their business. “This has been a dream of ours for a long-time,” Kelly said. “To have a shop of our own.” She said they are also friends of Schmitz and she has been very supportive of their endeavor. T h e Tr e a s u r e S h a c k h a s a variety of items for sale from die cast cars, beer and HarleyDavidson memorabilia, Coca-Cola collectibles, Shawnee ceramics, jewelry (new and vintage, antique furniture, angels, clocks, lamps and more. “All different types of clocks and vintage clocks,” Kelly said.

But the one things Kelly said she is known for is lamps. “A lot of lamps,” she said. Kelly said she also loves

collecting angels in memory of her son who passed in 2007. “ We h a v e a l i t t l e b i t o f everything,” Kelly said. “And most prices are negotiable.” Kelly said they go to auctions and estate sales often, so merchandise available is changing all the time. “We try to get nice things,” Kelly said. L o u i s . There are competitive races for men, women and fun races for children. The events will be held Thursday – Monday, September 3-6. Mike Weiss, event director of the THF Gateway Cup and owner of Big Shark Bicycle Company expects the THF Gateway Cup to bring out some of the region’s most talented cyclists. “It’s an important and prestigious event for the St. Louis cycling c o m m u n i t y, a n d a l s o o u r f o r city neighborhoods. The energy and support of this event grows every year. The fans just can’t get enough.” On Thursday night, Big Shark Bicycle Company invites all competing cyclists to “carb up”

with pizza and beer at Pi, one of St. Louis’s favorite places to grab a slice. Participants can also pick up their race number at Big Shark Bicycle Company off of Delmar as part of the Early Bird registration. Kids are encouraged to participate in the cycling events. In the place of charging a registration fee for the Kid’s Races, the THF Gateway Cup will be accepting donations for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Amachi Program, which provides assistance to children with incarcerated parents. People People planner “McKendree Harvest Challenge” set Walk or run the streets of historic Lebanon and the surrounding countryside in the “McKendree Harvest Challenge” on Saturday, Sept. 18. McKendree University will host the road race, which includes a 5K run or walk and a half- marathon run. The race starts at 8 a.m., with a pre-event briefing at 7:40 a.m. The 3.1 mile and 13.1 mile courses begin at the center of campus and travel through quaint downtown Lebanon. The 5K route then goes to Lebanon’s Horner Park and returns to the main campus finish line. The half-marathon winds through the rolling, scenic, rural landscape of northern St. Clair County and also finishes back on campus. Walkers are welcome to participate in the 5K only. The registration fee is $12 for the 5K and $30 for the half-marathon, with an additional $5 charge for those who sign up on race day. Tour of Illinois flower and wine operations set Brightflower Nursery in Stockton and Famous Fossil Winery in Cedarville are the destinations of a tour sponsored by University of Illinois Extension. The tour is scheduled for Friday, August 13, and will begin at Brightflower Nursery at 9 a.m. Jeanie McKewan and Michael Staver started Brightflower Nursery in 2006. “After working for a variety of business entrepreneurs on Chicago’s North Shore, I decided that it was time to start my own,” said McKewan, who is president of Brightflower. “I have always been involved in growing and gardening and have a master’s degree in plant pathology.” Brightflower Nursery is certified organic. McKewan said the choice to become certified was partly about nurturing the land, but also as a marketing niche. “We are small with very little capital so it is difficult to build the business. We’re far from some of our market, so delivery costs are high,” she said. Visitors will tour the greenhouse and hoop house production, the field production of cut flowers, the bouquet-

Mid-morning the tour will caravan to Famous Fossil Winery in Cedarville, which is owned and operated by Ken and Pam Rosmann. They began by planting the vineyard in 2004 and today have over 2,000 grapevines. The winery was opened in 2008. T h e v i n e y a rd i s c e r t i f i e d biodynamic. “Our wines are made with the minimum of handling and preservatives,” said Pam Rosmann. “We do not use any genetically modified yeasts to ferment the wine, and we use evaporated cane juice for our sweet wines.” T h e R o s m a n n s h a v e a l s o incorporated green technology in their structures. “Our building was built with maximum insulation in the walls, roof and windows,” Rosmann said. “We use a heat exchanger, and a highvelocity heating and cooling system with on-demand hot water. Our woodwork, tasting bar, and display cabinets were grown, milled and built using local resources. All of our appliances are energy star and we use as many recycled products as we can find. We serve local foods as much as we can for our private parties and in our café.” Guests on the tour will visit the tasting room, the vineyard, and the winery operation, as well as the fossils that were discovered when the

vineyard was being planted. Rend Lake and the surrounding area is one of those places. Seasons Lodge and Condominiums is a complex on the golf course at Rend Lake. The lodging itself is not on the actual lake, but it is within a mile driving distance. The Rend Lake Golf Course is a beautiful, renowned 27-hole course that people come from all over the country to play on. There is a lighted driving range also. Seasons Lodge and Condominiums is located right on the course, with the club house and Gibby’s on the Green Restaurant directly adjacent to it. The welcoming atmosphere begins with the inviting front porch, complete with tables and comfortable rockers and chairs for relaxing, visiting or playing a round of cards. Enter the front lobby to another comfortable living ro o m a r r a n g e m e n t in front of the fireplace, complete with a checker game ready for fun. A beautiful staircase leads to the second floor of the lodge. The only downside of the stair case is that there is no elevator. Travel Travel briefs AP source: Obamas to vacation on Gulf Coast WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House official says President Barack Obama and his family will vacation on Florida’s Gulf Coast next month. The Obamas are scheduled to travel to the coast on Aug. 14 and stay the weekend. Obama has made four trips to the Gulf region, including one overnight stay, since an underwater well began spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico in April. First lady Michelle Obama is making her second visit to the area on Friday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the trip had not been formally announced. Both the president and first lady have made a point of encouraging people to visit those Gulf Coast beaches that are open and free of oil damage to help the local economy.

Rare photos of Amelia Earhart in Hawaii on display HONOLULU (AP) — Amelia Earhart is returning to The Royal Hawaiian. The historic Waikiki hotel is hosting an exhibition of rarely seen photographs taken of the pioneering aviator when she visited Hawaii and stayed at the “Pink Palace of the Pacific” during the 1930s. The black-and-white images show a Earhart relaxing in a swimsuit and leaning against a palm tree while she gazes at the ocean. A few show her observing legendary surfer and Hawaii icon Duke Kahanamoku carve a pineapple for her. The photos show a side of Earhart many people might not be familiar with, especially those who have only seen her wearing a bomber jacket and aviator pants. “They bring her to life,” said Lynn Krantz, the archivist at Matson Navigation Co. which found the images in their files last year. “For instance, when you look at this one and you see her smile — it’s like whoa, joie de vivre,” Krantz said, using the French phrase for “joy of living.” Matson, which operated a luxury ocean liner between California and Hawaii in the early 20th century, built the Royal Hawaiian in the 1927 to give its well-heeled passengers a place to stay in the islands. One of the photos shows Earhart listening to guitarists on a lanai that’s next to the lounge where the exhibit is being held. Several shots show Earhart during a two-week trip to Hawaii that began in December 1934. She had arrived in Honolulu on Matson’s S.S. Lurline from Los Angeles, with her husband George Putnam, a publicist, and a Lockheed Vega airplane.

The couple initially explained they planned to use the plane to tour the islands. A few days later they surprised everyone with the announcement Earhart would pilot the plane back to California, a journey no one — man or woman — had ever attempted. She completed the flight in 18 hours on Jan. 12, 1935. Other shots show her on her last trip to Hawaii in March 1937 — several months before she vanished over the South Pacific during an attempt to be the first woman to fly around the world. Earhart, then 39, and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared on July 2 en route to Howland Island from New Guinea. Kelly Hoen, general manager of The Royal Hawaiian, said she’s heard from longtime returning guests who are enjoying getting a glimpse of what hotel looked like when their parents stayed there. Younger guests, meanwhile, are learning more about the heritage of resort, she said. Hoen stressed everyone — not just those staying at the five-star hotel — are welcome to enjoy the exhibit. “We encourage everybody to come and take a look,” Hoen said. SpaceShipTwo may make first glide test this year LOS ANGELES (AP) — Virgin Galactic’s space tourism rocket SpaceShipTwo may fly free in its first glide test later this year, a company official said Friday. The six-passenger spaceship has been carried aloft three times attached to the wing of its special jet-powered mothership, including a July 15 flight with two pilots aboard for the first time. That flight, conducted by spaceship-builder Scaled Composites LLC over California’s Mojave Desert, allowed the crew to evaluate all systems and functions in the air, said Stephen Attenborough, an executive with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic in London. “Scaled are now evaluating the data from this recent captive-carry flight before we know when the first SS2 independent glide flight will be but there’s a reasonable possibility that we could see it happen in the Fall,” Attenborough said in an email to The Associated Press. Virgin Galactic also released the first photographs of SpaceShipTwo with its wings and tail structures in the “feathered” position, a unique and critically important element of the system created by legendary aviation designer Burt Rutan. By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge One of the most popular innovations in art these days is for artists to turn their work into something for daily use. Whether it be pottery for your kitchen or d i s p l a y i n y o u r l i v i n g ro o m , glassware used for dining or display, or even jewelry for special occasions or everyday wear. Artist Nancy Giere, a fused glass artist, began her life interested in all mediums of art. Instead of a toy or security blanket, she carried around a tangled rainbow of yarn that she pulled from her mother’s knitting basket. As soon as she was old enough, her mother helped her manage a crochet hook and a knitting spool. She jokes in her bio about how she created endless coils of yarn and had visions of turning her mother’s leftover yarn into a room-size braided rug. After taking a glass fusing class for fun, she set up her own work area in her basement. She began making her fused pieces in to jewelry, or wearable art. Dichroic glass was created by NASA when the need arose to create glass face shields and other equipment to block harmful spectrums of light. The Arts Artistic adventures Immediacy Theatre Project Presents “Drawn & Quartered” Immediacy Theatre Project (ITP) invades a new venue as it continues its 2010 season with the Drawn and Quartered series at Mad Art Gallery (2727 South 12th St., St. Louis, MO 63118) July 30 and 31, August 20 and 21, September 23 and 24, and October 29 and 30, with new plays each month. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the show starting at 8:00 pm each night. Tickets are $8 at the door. Each Drawn & Quartered offers thirty-five new two-minute plays performed in an order chosen by the audience. The super-short plays are written by a crack team of ITP ensemble members, and they abandon many conventional theatrical elements such as character, location and suspension of disbelief. In these plays, the ensemble members portray themselves, the audience is always acknowledged, and the plays always exist exactly where they are: in an art gallery in St. Louis. Says ITP nArtistic Director Matt Heckman, “You don’t just come to Drawn & Quartered; you come to be part of it. Our audiences make this series special.” This year ’s episodes will be directed by Heckman, Director of Development Danielle Borsch and Managing Director Kyle Kratky, and 2010 marks the fifth anniversary of Drawn & Quartered. “Although we have five years of experience at being Drawn & Quartered under our theatrical belts, the show never gets tired,” says Borsch. “It’s a different experience every single time: different plays, new commentaries on what’s going on in the world, fresh pop culture trends, and a changing order of plays that alters the plays themselves.” In honor of ITP’s five-year milestone with Drawn & Quartered, this year ’s episodes are going to have an extra-special edge. “We’re proud to announce that Drawn & Quartered has gone High Definition. “Inception”

We’re happy to report, with great relief, that all the hype is justified. Writer-director Christopher Nolan’s first film since “The Dark Knight” is a stunningly gorgeous, technically flawless symphony of images and ideas. “Memento,” the mystery-in-reverse that put Nolan on the map a decade ago, looks almost quaint by comparison. In its sheer enormity, it’s every inch a blockbuster, but in the good sense of the word: with awesomeness, ambition and scope. The cinematography, production design, effects, editing, score, everything down the line — all superb. But unlike so many summer movies assigned that tag, “Inception” is no mindless thrill ride. It’ll make you work, but that’s part of what’s so thrilling about it. With its complicated concepts about dreams within dreams, layers of consciousness and methods of manipulation, “Inception” might make you want to stop a few times just to get your bearings. The juggernaut of Nolan’s storytelling momentum, however, keeps pounding away. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as dream thief Dom Cobb, an “extractor” who enters the mind while a person is dreaming to steal their secrets; Joseph GordonLevitt plays his detail-oriented right-hand man. Ken Watanabe, as the powerful businessman Saito, hires Dom and his team for a different kind of crime: sneak into the subconscious of a competitor (Cillian Murphy) and implant an idea that will ruin his empire. Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Dileep Rao are all excellent as members of Dom’s crew. One of the year’s best films, and it’ll surely get even better upon repeated viewings. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout. RUNNING TIME: 147 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

“Countdown to Zero”

Nuclear armageddon has taken a back seat to other doomsday scenarios, from global warming to economic chaos. Lest we forget, director Lucy Walker proceeds to scare the stuffing out of viewers with this thoughtful exploration into lingering dangers of nuclear disaster, whether by a rogue nation such as Iran or North Korea, a terrorist attack or some terrible accident. The doom and gloom comes with the voice of authority. Among the dozens interviewed are Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair and former U.S. cabinet members Robert McNamara and James Baker III. The film offers some alarming recollections about false alarms

that nearly led to catastrophe in the old U.S.-Soviet staring match. Yet these Cold War flashbacks feel like ancient history, even filler, next to Walker’s examination of the terrorist and rogue nation threats. The film’s impact might have been even stronger and more immediate had it lingered longer and probed deeper into those perils and kept the history lesson to a minimum.\ RATED: PG for thematic material, images of destruction and incidental smoking. RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Life During Wartime”

Todd Solondz revisits his characters from 1998’s “Happiness,” but he doesn’t reveal much that’s new about them — or his world view. People are monsters, whether they live in suburban New Jersey or suburban Florida. As writer and director, Solondz looks for the humanity within them — his preferred method is to matter-of-factly depict their alienation without a shred of pathos — but they’re still monsters nonetheless. There’s repetitious talk about forgiving and forgetting, and debate over which is preferable, but Solondz doesn’t seem particularly interested in either. Everyone stays the same, even though Solondz has replaced the cast of “Happiness” with all new actors here; he’s even inserted a couple of characters from 1995’s “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” which is still his best film. Still there’s a detached nature to the most shocking words and deeds, which frequently makes “Life During Wartime” feel almost like a parody of a Solondz film. But at the same time, the deadpan delivery of lacerating dialogue remains a reliable source of uncomfortable comedy. Solondz again reveals himself as a master of wringing laughs from the most awkward situations. Allison Janney, Michael Lerner, Shirley Henderson, Ciaran Hinds and Ally Sheedy are among the ensemble cast. RATED: Unrated but contains language, nudity and adult situations. RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

“Ramona and Beezus”

Little kids and tweens — girls, specifically — will probably eat this up, or at least be suitably amused by it.

They won’t be troubled with things like a lack of plot or narrative momentum. And it’s sad to report that, given the strength of the source material. “Ramona and Beezus” is based on Beverly Cleary’s beloved children’s books, which have been around for more than 50 years and vividly capture the playfulness and awkwardness of youth. Laurie Craig and Nick Pustay’s script features tales from several of Cleary’s books, and as a result it feels like a series of individual episodes — both madcap and heartrending — rather than a cohesive story with any real drive. And Elizabeth Allen, who also directed “Aquamarine,” plays up the antics for maximum wackiness. Newcomer Joey King has a likable way about her, though, as the high-spirited, accident-prone Ramona Quimby. The movie follows the adventures of the 9-year-old, her teenage sister, Beezus (Disney star Selena Gomez), baby Roberta, dad Robert (John Corbett) and mom Dorothy (Bridget Moynahan). Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Duhamel co-star as former high-school sweethearts and have the film’s only interesting subplot. RATED: G. RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Salt”

Despite the cryptic ads that pose the question, “Who Is Salt?” and regardless of the various twists and turns designed to throw us off, the intentions of Angelina Jolie’s super-spy character, Evelyn Salt, never really seem to be in question. Nonetheless, no actress working today is as convincing an action star as Jolie, and she does tear it up here; the fight scenes are visceral, not balletic like the “Tomb Raider” movies or supernaturally trippy as in “Wanted.” And “Salt” allows director Phillip Noyce to return to the kind of action thrillers he’s made previously, like the Tom Clancy adaptations “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger.” It’s muscular, gritty and propulsive. (Robert Elswit, an Oscar winner for “There Will Be Blood,” is the cinematographer.) It’s also totally ludicrous and lacking in even the slightest shred of humanity. What Jolie is called upon to do as a CIA operative accused of being a Russian spy grows increasingly difficult to accept, even for summer escapism. Yes, she’s supposed to be a highly trained undercover operative — whether she’s working for the United States or Russia — but this is ridiculous and even laughable when, in theory, we’re supposed to be engrossed. Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor co-star. RATED: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes.

S p e a k i n g o f a d a y, t h a t ’ s apparently how long it takes to organize a wedding for dozens of guests, including altering a gown to fit a bride who’s several inches shorter than the woman who walked down the aisle in it the first time. This all sounds like uptight, grown-up nitpicking, probably. This is also a good thing, though, because Bea’s subplot with next-door neighbor Hobart (Josh Duhamel) is probably the most intriguing aspect of the movie — at least for anyone over the age of 12. Bea and Hobart were highschool sweethearts; 15 years later, he wants her to accompany him to Alaska. Goodwin and Duhamel (who co-starred in “Win a Date With

Tad Hamilton!”) are extremely cute together and have tons of chemistry — but most of their moments are upended by Ramona’s silliness. She ruins Hobart’s car by spilling paint all over it in a rainbow of colors. She nearly burns down the kitchen trying to make dinner. She can’t even do show-and-tell right in class (Sandra Oh has some deadpan zingers as her strict teacher).

Children’s movie is this week’s highlight By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Angelina Jolie loves her reputation as an action movie queen. I know she does. Tomb Raider, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Wanted, and now Salt. They all add up to make her this generation’s answer to Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton. And we love her for it. She does her own stunts, which is not commonplace for an A-List star of her caliber (remember, she has an Oscar) or a mother of six. Salt aims to be more, though, than just another amped up spy movie. It wears its Hitchcockian roots like a heart on a sleeve, as Angie has to save her good name and solve the mystery herself as a wrong woman accused in a dastardly plot. I suppose one could compare it to North by Northwest, just with better special effects and without the charming sarcasm of Cary Grant. Then again, who would want that? Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, an agent for the

CIA who has done everything her country has ever asked for her, including spending months in a Korean prison, being tortured for information she never revealed. When a walk-in confessor (Daniel Olbrychski) accuses her of being a double agent for a dissident group of Russian expatriates, Salt goes on the run to solve an attempted Presidential assassination and put down the dogs who have smeared her reputation. The action sequences are pretty amazing, including a freeway chase that has Jolie l e a p i n g f ro m t h e t o p o f o n e v e h i c l e to another with surprising ease. She is pursued doggedly by agents that believe her story (Liev Schreiber) and those who don’t (Chiwetel Ejiofor), but, by movie’s end, I found this to simply be another very predictable whodunit with terrible makeup (no one would every believe Jolie in disguise as a man), implausible penetrations (the President probably does have a secret underground bunker, but

nobody’s getting in), and other suspensions of disbelief (like waking the dead) that I can’t even get my head around. Salt runs 100 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. I give this film one star out of four. ••• Were I a naive man, I would expect that simply because Ramona and Beezus was a great movie, many people would be lining up to see it. Aside from girls under the age of six, and their doting mothers, that’s hardly the case. I must confess that my history with the tales of Beverly Cleary is spotty at best. I remember my brother having a brief fascination with a character called Ralph S. Mouse when we were in elementary school, but that’s about it. I’d heard of Ramona Quimby, t h e u b i q u i t o u s re c u r r i n g c h a r a c t e r i n many of Clearly novels, but I had never taken the opportunity to read up on her or to find out what exactly a ‘beezus’ is.

The story centers on the rambunctious, unique Ramona (Joey King) and her o l d e r s i s t e r, B e a t r i c e ( S e l e n a G o m e z ) , who goes by the nickname of Beezus. The Quimby sisters have to survive each other while dealing with their Aunt Bea’s (Ginnifer Goodwin) crazy love life, their infant sister Roberta, and their father ’s ( J o h n C o r b e t t ) re c e n t u n e m p l o y m e n t . They do it carefully (Beezus) and not at all gracefully (Ramona). While Clearly’s story was first published in early 1950s, the material is again very timely and certainly a welcome change for those of us looking for a live-action alternative to the standard summer fare that Hollywood is cooking up this year. Refreshing. Ramona and Beezus runs 104 minutes and is rated G. It is suitable for all audience, though does deal with weighty issues like job loss and the death of loved ones. I give this film three stars out of four.

Yiddish seeps into American culture By AMY BIANCOLLI Houston Chronicle “Dinner for Schmucks,” which opened recently, concerns folks who compete to invite the biggest clots to dinner. It’s a remake of “Le Diner de Cons,” the title of which contains the French word for “idiot” and, uh, something specifically female. The word “schmuck” is Yiddish for its male equivalent. Such are the joys of etymology. And such are the joys of Yiddish, an ancient linguistic stew of Hebrew, German and assorted other tongues that has enlivened and reflected Jewish life and culture for about a millennium. Forcefully blunt and colorfully descriptive, it packs more meaning into a single term than most languages cram into a sentence. “It’s a very batamt language -it’s full of taste, full of feeling, it’s full of nuance and the use of the senses,” said Peninnah Schram, a professor of speech and drama at the Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University in New York City. Schram, who grew up in a Yiddish-speaking household, is also a storyteller and author of 10 books of Jewish folk tales. The can-you-top-this premise of “Dinner for Schmucks” is, she said, “very much a motif in folktales all over the world - who’s going to be the stupidest or talk first?” It’s also very much in the spirit of Yiddish, a vernacular used by the Ashkenazic Jews of central and Eastern Europe. Like its Sephardic counterpart, the Spanish-heavy Ladino, it contains elements of Hebrew and Aramaic as well as bits and pieces of local dialects. Wherever the Diaspora took them, Jews molded their language to suit. But just as Yiddish has absorbed words and sounds from varied parts of the world, this punchy, vivacious tongue has given plenty in return. For decades now it has seeped into American pop culture, crossing over from Yiddish literature and

entertainment into mainstream film, TV, press. Jewish talent arrived in Hollywood and brought along the lingo and attitude of their mame loshn, or mother tongue. “People like Paul Muni, and John Garfield, and Edward G. Robinson - these were all Jewish actors from the Yiddish theater,” Schram explained. Yiddish is everywhere. Famously deployed by the Three Stooges and the Marx Brothers, indispensable in “The Producers” and “The Frisco Kid,” it’s also shown up in “Norma Rae” (“Kvetch, kvetch, kvetch”), “Taxi!” (the Irish James Cagney chats in Yiddish, which he learned on the streets of New York) and “Clueless” (Alicia Silverstone uses “kvelling,” or gushing with pride for a loved one). The language was all over “Seinfeld,” of course; George even coined a phrase, “shiks appeal,” to describe Elaine’s allure to Jewish men as a

“shiksa” (gentile woman). Yiddish has an efficiency and pizzazz that can’t be beat, especially for a writer; I employ it on an almost weekly basis, and I’m just a goy from Connecticut. What better word than “schmaltz” (Yiddish for lard) to describe a movie’s oozing sentimentality? Or “klutz” (wooden block) to describe a bumbling character? I’m especially fond of “schlemiel” and “schlimazel,” which readers of a certain age might recall from “Laverne and Shirley” (“Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hassenpfeffer Incorporated!”). Imagine one unfortunate lunk spilling soup on another. The spiller is a schlemiel. The spill-ee, a schlimazel. Such explanations abound in Yiddishkeit. “It is such a powerfully evocative language,” said Ira J. Black, who teaches speech and theater

For instance, he says, “There is no way to define the word ’chutzpah’ unless you use it in a metaphor.” The best is unprintable. Another, cleaner definition of the word describes a man who kills his parents, comes to trial and then asks the judge for leniency - because he’s an orphan. One of Black’s favorite Yiddishisms is “schnorrer,” often defined as “beggar.” But beggar doesn’t capture the extreme parasitic tenacity - or the “chutzpah” - of the term. As Black explains it: “A beggar comes to you and asks for a dollar. You say, ‘I can’t help you,’ and he goes away. A ’schnorrer ’ comes and asks, and when you say, ‘I’m sorry, times are hard,’ he says, ‘Well, why should your hardship be put

on me?”’ (In “Animal Crackers,” Groucho sings: “Did someone call me schnorrer?”) He cited the origin, meaning and diminutive of “schmuck,” but most of these remarks were unprintable as well. Schram cited a different use of the word as it appeared in another relevant Cagney film, Billy Wilder’s sidesplitting Cold War farce “One, Two, Three.” In it, the star unleashes a long staccato “spiel” (or play) detailing the head-to-toe capitalist makeover of a young East German. At one point, he orders: “cut the schmooze (small talk).” Moments later, an assistant enters the room. “Schmuck!” he yells, and Cagney recoils in shock. “What did you say?” “Schmuck!” the man says again, then snaps open a velvet tray of baubles. He was only using the German word for jewelry.

The scenic riverfront makes for a great backdrop for many outdoor events and a great art exhibit will soon be hosted in that area. Saint Charles Riverfront Arts (SCRA) will be hosting its third annual Saint Charles Plein Air Competition between Sept. 12 and Oct. 1, in the Main Street and Frenchtown Historic Districts in St. Charles. SCRA’s Plein Air Competition encourages area artists to paint “plein air”, which is French for “in the open air”. \This event is family-friendly, and the SCRA encourages the public to stop by and visit with artists as they paint in the downtown St. Charles community. Family Focus L’Oreal's future hangs in the balance Mother/daughter battle captures France's attention PARIS (AP) — An ugly battle at beauty icon L’Oreal between Europe’s richest woman and her daughter could end up shaping the future of the world’s No. 1 cosmetics maker. As France stands transfixed by lurid claims of dirty campaign cash and tax dodging that have ensnared President Nicolas Sarkozy’s government, the 87-year-old heiress to the L’Oreal fortune fears her daughter could let the family-owned business fall into foreign corporate hands. L o s i n g L’ O r e a l — w h o s e Maybelline mascaras, Lancome face creams and Armani perfumes are used by women around the globe — would be a blow to France, a nation as renowned for its beauty secrets as it is determined to remain a global economic player. Much hinges on the woman set to inherit the century-old company, which has weathered criticism over Nazi ties and stayed friendly with generations of French leaders on the right and left — and may well shrug off this latest storm. L’Oreal’s shares haven’t taken a hit, and have in fact risen amid the scandal, which stemmed from a feud between heiress Liliane Bettencourt and her daughter, Francoise Bettencourt Meyers. It erupted into a political affair a month ago over leaks by former

Bettencourt employees about the family’s fortune. Big shareholders and L’Oreal’s workers appear eager to maintain its family-controlled structure, its cosmetics focus — and its Frenchness. Potential suitors could be Switzerland-based Nestle, which already owns 30 percent of L’Oreal, and Cincinnati, Ohio-based Procter & Gamble. But analysts say a takeover would be a costly investment even for those large companies, and wouldn’t necessarily be a good fit. “We don’t believe it would make sense for Nestle to take over L’Oreal. They are two different businesses. In terms of the combination, we don’t see synergies that would explain” a takeover, said Claudia Lenz, analyst for Bank Vontobel in Zurich. If anything, she said, Nestle might be looking to dump its L’Oreal stake to focus on its food and beverage business. Procter & Gamble is a key rival to L’Oreal in the beauty products business — a market estimated at some $360 billion a year worldwide — and analysts said it could be eyeing a stake, though likely a minority one. Neither Nestle nor Procter & Gamble would comment on the speculation. Lenz said L’Oreal looks less

susceptible to takeover now than five years ago, when long-serving CEO Lindsay Owen-Jones announced he would step down. Owen-Jones helped transform the company from a France-focused company into an international powerhouse, pushing into Asia and farther into the United States. The Bettencourt women have been estranged for years, all because of a celebrity photographer with a charming smile. The daughter accuses photographer FrancoisMar ie Banier of abusing her mother’s alleged mental frailty — and bilking the elder heiress out of 1 billion euros in cash, artworks and other gifts. Francoise Bettencourt Meyers insists she does not covet the money — she already has billions of her own — but is heartsick to see her mother manipulated by those around her. The mother has defended the photographer and publicly questioned her daughter’s motives. Bettencourt’s lawyer describes the daughter as a “57-year-old little girl” seeking the attention of a mother more at ease in the company of a dandy photographer than her only child. The details of household conversations came out in secret recordings by Bettencourt’s ex-butler leaked last month, including one in

which the mother seems confused about whether or not she gave an island in the Seychelles to Banier as a gift. The company’s origins date to 1909, when Bettencourt’s chemist father, Eugene Schueller, invented a hair dye he named Aureale. After World War II, several L’Oreal executives Schueller hired were accused of Nazi sympathies. Liliane Bettencourt’s husband Andre wrote for a Nazi-controlled newspaper, “La Terre Francaise,” though later joined the underground Resistance. The family maintained close ties to the political elite, as Andre Bettencourt worked for Presidents Charles de Gaulle, Georges Pompidou and Francois Mitterrand. The current scandal includes accusations that Liliane Bettencourt’s financial adviser gave envelopes of cash illegally to the treasurer of Sarkozy’s conservative party months before his 2007 election. Sarkozy denies the claims and calls them a smear campaign. Liliane Bettencourt is Europe’s r i c h e s t w o m a n a c c o rd i n g t o Forbes, and one of France’s biggest taxpayers. In a statement last week, she raised concerns about the company’s future. “I hope my daughter will

not destabilize the group, which my father and I have wanted to be French,” she said. L’Oreal officials would not comment on the legal affairs or speculation about its future. Last week it reported a 13 percent rise in sales in the second quarter to euro4.95 billion after a slump last year linked to the global financial crisis. CEO Jean-Paul Agon isn’t showing public signs of worry. The sales figures “reassure us about our grand strategic choices, and allow us to face the second half with confidence,” he said. Currently the Bettencourt family owns 31 percent of the company, Nestle 30 percent, with the rest primarily held by institutional investors and small shareholders. When Liliane Bettencourt dies, a shareholder agreement stipulates that nothing can be done with the ownership balance for at least six months. After that, all eyes turn to her daughter. A published writer, Francoise Bettencourt Meyers leads a relatively private, quiet life with her husband and two sons, only one of whom is still in contact with his grandmother.

Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers – oh, my! By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge This is the time of year I love. The tomatoes are ripe and full on the vine, the cucumbers can’t be picked fast enough and peppers of all kinds are coming out our ears. Whether you have a garden of your own or a favorite farmer ’s market, this is the time to enjoy the fruit of the harvest, literally! I f y o u a re h a v i n g t h e s a m e d i l e m m a I a m , a n d a re t r y i n g really hard to eat up as much of this great fresh garden fare before the abundance ends, here are some recipes to try to give some variety to your dinner table. Stuffed Green Peppers 6-8 large green peppers 1 lb ground beef 1/2 onion diced 1 bag shredded mozzarella 2 medium cans tomato sauce 2 cups rice Wash green peppers, cut off top and scoop out insides carefully w i t h o u t p o k i n g t h ro u g h t h e

pepper. Set aside. Cook rice as usual. Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet, drain off grease and add tomato sauce (leaving some to cover bottom of cooking dish). Add cooked rice to meat mixture and stir together well. Place some mozzarella in bottom of green peppers and then spoon in meat mixture, packing down carefully until filled. Sprinkle mozzarella on top. Bake at 375°F in a covered roasting pan or baking dish with foil over top until green pepper is slightly soft. Olives may also be placed inside with meat mixture, if desired. Fresh Tomato and Cucumber Salad 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon sea or kosher salt 3-4 cloves garlic, minced 10 fresh basil leaves 5 fresh oregano leaves 3 small fresh cucumbers (pickling or thin slicing) 2 large beefsteak tomatoes, vine ripened Mince garlic or press through a garlic press. Let garlic stand in balsamic and wine vinegars for 10 minutes (this takes the “edge” off). Discard any garlic which has green sprouts in the center, as the flavor is too sharp and bitter for this salad - use for another purpose. Wash basil and oregano leaves (pick at noon time on a sunny day for best flavor). Roll up leaves and slice into little strips (chiffonade). Chop and add to your best olive oil and allow to stand in oil while garlic marinates. Meanwhile, prepare salad ingredients. Wash cucumbers and tomatoes. Peel cucumbers, leaving a scant amount of peel (helps with digestion). Slice cucumbers into 1/4 inch coins (circles). With a sharp knife, remove stem and blossom end from tomatoes (a very small amount). Slice tomatoes into wedges, being careful not to crush and lose juice. Place tomatoes and cucumbers in salad bowl and sprinkle with sea salt or kosher salt. Combine olive oil with vinegars, whisking together well. Use to dress tomatoes and cucumbers; serve at room temperature. Variations: Add one thinly sliced red onion, pitted oil cured black

olives and fresh mozzarella, sliced (or use the small bocconcini). Fresh Tomato Salad 3 garlic cloves 6-8 ripe tomatoes 4 tbsp. olive oil Salt to taste Italian seasoning to taste 1/4 c. water 6 fresh basil leaves, chopped Slice tomatoes. Add all ingredients and toss together. Chill two hours or longer. Enjoy! Makes four to five servings, a nice, fresh tasting salad. Fresh Roasted Red Peppers 6 large red bell peppers 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon chopped parsley salt and pepper, to taste brown paper bag 1 tsp sea salt or kosher salt Preheat broiler or grill. Cook the whole peppers over high heat until they have blackened spots and blisters and are tender. Place the peppers into a brown paper bag and roll up the top to seal, close to the peppers. Set aside until the peppers cool. When the peppers are cool, remove the skins. Slice the peppers open and scrape out the cores and seeds. Rinse under water quickly and dry well with paper towels. Cut into strips or halves. In a clean jar, combine salt, olive oil, garlic and parsley. Add peppers and store in refrigerator for up to three weeks.

Green Pepper Steak 1 pound beef round, * 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 clove garlic 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, ** 1/4 cup salad oil 1 cup green onion, sliced thin 1 cup red and green bell peppers, cut in 3/4” cubes 2 stalks celery, sliced thin 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 cup water 2 tomato, cut into 2” chunks 8 ounces waterchestnuts, canned, sliced 4 ounces mushrooms, sliced With a very sharp knife cut beef across grain into thin strips, 1/8inch thick. Combine soy sauce, garlic, ginger. Add beef. Toss and set aside while preparing vegetables. Heat oil in large frying pan or wok. Add beef and toss over high heat until browned. Taste meat. If it is not tender, over and simmer for 30 to 40 min. over low heat. Tu r n h e a t u p a n d a d d vegetables. Toss until vegetables are tender crisp, about 10 minutes. Mix cornstarch with water. Add to pan; stir and cook until thickened. Add tomatoes and heat through. You can prepare the beef ahead and refrigerate just before adding the vegetables. Finish cooking later. * May use beef chuck. Be sure to trim fat. ** May substitute 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh ginger. Serves four.

Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination!

Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover! St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK m en , don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings.

Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat.

Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it!

La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also.

El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table.

Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts,

Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!”

3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Northside Dairy Haven Edwardsville 4 stars This seasonal drive-in has been part of the Edwardsville landscape for nearly 50 years. Still famous for their Charco Burger, they also have an array of other sandwiches and barbecue plate specials. The prices cannot be beat! Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars If you like wings, this is a great place for you. Other selections of appetizers, sandwiches and mostly bar fare round out the menu. A little pricey for wings, but if you gotta havem’ you gotta havem’. Service is kind of a toss up. Has been good, has been slow. 47 Port Street Grill Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 5 stars This is a fantastic, fabulous steak house that is a great date night or special group night out. The steaks are perfect, the lobster delectable, the sea bass melts in your mouth, and the fresh pastries are world class. The ambiance is straight out of the “Rat Pack” scene. Amazing wine selections, but any drink available. Prices are a bit steep, but a memorable feast for that special occasion.
