People Zoo birds experience baby boom For The Edge
S
pring and summer have been exciting for the Saint Louis Zoo Bird Department with chicks hatching and keepers hopping! Sired by the oldest male (age 45) in the care of zoos, a king vulture chick named Agnes hatched on April 3 and is now in its Bird House habitat for visitors to see. The birth of this year’s chick marked the first time since 1991 that the king vultures have had chicks for two consecutive years.
For the third year in a row, the rhinoceros hornbill pair in the Bird House nested. This year, for the first time ever at the Zoo, they produced two chicks on March 28 and March 30—a rare occurrence for this species. They recently fledged the nest and can be seen in their habitat. A Collie’s jay chick hatched on July 5 and is in the nest with its parents. Visitors might catch a glimpse of the chick when the parents are feeding it. With a strikingly long-tail, this large bird from northwestern Mexico is the watchdog of the forest with its loud, raucous call. On June 1, a critically endangered horned guan hatched—this is the second offspring for this pair (the first hatched last year). The chick is being cared for in a private area of the Bird House. The Saint Louis Zoo is one of only two Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) institutions to ever breed the horned guan in the U.S. Last year’s chick was the first for the
Zoo and only the second recorded breeding of the species in the United States. Two endangered Congo peafowl recently hatched on July 5 and 8 at the Bird House and are being cared for in the private area. The Congo peafowl from the Central Congolian lowland forests of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo is the national bird of that country. In addition, a white-headed buffalo weaver hatched on July 17 and is also being cared for behind the scenes. This summer, the Saint Louis Zoo is open from Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for Prairie Farms Summer Zoo Weekends. For more information, visit stlzoo.org, facebook.com/stlzoo, twitter.com/ stlzoo, youtube.com/stlzootube, pinterest.com/stlzoo. About the birds: The king vulture: This colorful bird makes its home in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Like all vultures, it is a scavenger and is adept at finding dead animals even in dense forests. Vultures are vanishing around the world at an alarming rate. Of the 23 species of vultures in the world, 11 are currently threatened. These birds are declining due to poisoning from feeding on medicated cattle carcasses, power line collisions and loss of food and habitat. Vultures play a vital role in the environment by cleaning up carcasses and preventing the spread of disease. Conservationists around the world are monitoring populations and implementing measures to conserve vultures and their habitats. The rhinocerous hornbill: As is customary for all hornbills, when the chicks’ 20-year-old mother laid her eggs, she sealed herself in a log with mud and fruit and incubated the eggs, relying solely on the 15-year-old male to pass her food through a tiny hole. About 30 days after the chicks hatched, the female broke out of the cavity and resealed the
entrance. She and the male jointly fed the growing chicks until they emerged at approximately 80 days of age. Native to South East Asia, the rhinoceros hornbill has large yellow beaks on a small black feathery face. It is named for its golden-yellow upturned horn, called a casque, which is thought to act as a “resonating chamber,” amplifying the animal’s nasal cells. The casque may look heavy and cumbersome, but it’s actually very light. It’s made up of thin, hollow cells supported by tiny, hollow bones. The breeding of the Zoo’s rhinoceros hornbills was recommended by the AZA Species Survival Plan® (SSP). The Zoo is a participant in this cooperative program, working with other conservation organizations to ensure the survival of the species. The species is listed as near threatened. The Collie’s Jay: These intelligent birds live in Northwestern Mexico in arid scrub, thorn forests, brush and open woodlands and in groups of five to ten animals. They eat a variety of foods, such as small animals, large insects, seeds, fruits, and grains. They also sip nectar from Balsa blossoms. Both the male and female jay help build the nest high in a tree, where the female lays and sits on three to four eggs. The Horned Guan: Large and dramatic, the horned guan (or pavon) has a unique two-inch-long red horn of bare skin extending from the top of its head. This horn is thought to be ornamental to attract a mate. These unique horns will start to develop at approximately 3 months of age. The horn begins with two bumps on the top of the head. These
bumps gradually twist and grow together. In 2007, the Saint Louis Zoo became the first accredited zoo in the nation to exhibit this species. One of the rarest bird species in the world, the horned guan population in the wild is down to only 1,000 to 2,000 individuals in southeastern Mexico and Guatemala because their cloud forest habitat has been destroyed for logging, coffee plantations and other cash crops. The recent hatchings are an important development in what has been a great effort to save this species. The Zoo has worked with this endangered family of birds in Trinidad and Columbia for several years, and, in 2004, founded the WildCare Institute and the Center for Conservation of the Horned Guan. The Horned Guan Conservation Center staff has worked with its partners to conduct research on this elusive species. Congo Peafowl: The Congo peafowl is a species of peafowl native to the Congo Basin. Very little is known about this species, which was only recorded as a species in 1936. The Congo peafowl has physical characteristics of both the peafowl and the guineafowl. The male (peacock) of this species is a large bird of up 25 to 28 inches in length. The Congo peafowl’s diet consists mainly of fruits and insects. The male has a similar display to that of other species of peafowl. The Congo peafowl is monogamous, though detailed mating information from the wild is still needed. Due to ongoing habitat loss, small population size, and hunting pressure in some areas, the Congo peafowl is evaluated as vulnerable among threatened species.

Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis
On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017. Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. R o ut e 66 : Mai n St re e t through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road. Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps. "The Secret Life of Pets"
Any pet owner who's imbued their furry or feathered friends with deep thoughts and mysterious intentions will relate to the imagination behind "The Secret Life of Pets ." It may not have the emotional resonance of a Pixar movie, but with its playful premise, endearing performances and outstanding score by Alexandre Desplat, "Pets" is fun, family (and animal)-friendly fare. People's favorite non-speaking companions are brought to life here by Illumination Entertainment (the studio behind "Despicable Me") and given voice by an all-star cast that includes Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate and Albert Brooks. Plot-wise, "Pets" follows the path Pixar set with talking toys 20 years ago in "Toy Story": Two would-be rivals fighting for the love of their owner are forced to unite for a common cause. Little terrier Max (C.K.) is the top dog in the life of his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper), and a leader among the other house pets in their New York City apartment building, including neighbor Pomeranian Gidget (Slate), and the fat cat next door, Chloe (Lake Bell). But his exalted position is threatened when Katie brings home a giant, fluffy mutt named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). Like Woody and Buzz, Max and Duke are instantly at odds. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action and some rude humor." RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Captain Fantastic"
"Captain Fantastic " is about the fantasy of being able to create a perfect world for your children, and the crushing realization that such control is ultimately impossible. Ben (Viggo Mortensen) pursues this ideal in a particularly extreme way — by removing his family from society altogether and creating his own little utopia in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. We meet the family in the midst of a hunt. They're all covered in camouflaging mud. The eldest, Bo (George MacKay), slaughters an animal, and Ben tells him that he is a man now. Primitive though the ritual may be, this family is not. Far from it. They are survivalist philosopher kings — highly educated and extremely self-sufficient. Ranging in age from single digits to late teens, the six children, Nai (Charlie Shotwell), Zaja (Shree Crooks), Rellian (Nicholas Hamilton, who resembles young River Phoenix), Vespyr (Annalise Basso), Kielyr (Samantha Isler) and Bo have been molded in Ben's very specific image. And, for the most part, they worship their father and their lifestyle — Noam Chomsky day and all. The casting director should win an award for finding these truly excellent young performers, who shine alongside the always wonderful Mortensen. But the cracks are starting to show in this little family unit, and not just because normal hormones and attitudes are emerging. "I'm not a Trotskyist any more. I'm a Maoist!" Bo says in an angsty teenage huff at one point. No, there is something more serious festering. Their mother, Leslie (Trin Miller), has been away for three months, hospitalized with severe depression. The kids miss her dearly, and her absence is becoming an issue. But we never get the chance to really meet her. Ben finds out early in the film that she's killed herself. He tells the kids this fact very frankly. Ben never lies to his children. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and brief graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Star Trek Beyond"
In the previous "Star Trek" installment, Spock cried. In the latest, "Star Trek Beyond," he laughs. And not just a little snicker, either, but a belly-full one. What bold explorations into the farthest reaches of the galaxy hold for Spock no one knows. A sigh? A hiccup? "Star Trek Beyond," like most of the rebooted properties flying around our movie theaters, delights in nostalgically resurrecting iconic characters and tweaking them anew. The balance is a delicate one, as seen in the pre-release debate around this film revealing Sulu (John Cho but formerly played by LGBT icon George Takei) as gay. The scene in question turns out to be a mere moment, lightly handled, showing Sulu greeting his same-sex partner and their daughter after a long mission. It's all expressed with just a few arms tenderly draped across shoulders. And it's the kind of welcome touch that director Justin Lin, the "Fast & Furious" veteran who takes over for J.J. Abrams, has brought to this pleasingly episode-like installment. The film finds a bored Enterprise finishing up a fiveyear tour in deep space. The (albeit brief) change of pace is immediately appreciated. The last two beefed-up "Star Trek" movies, as if overcompensating for decades of Trekkie nerd-dome, threatened to make the once brainy "Star Trek" less distinct from other mega-sized sci-fi adventures — just another clothesline of CGI set pieces strung together. Like its recent predecessors, "Star Trek Beyond" is mostly an assortment of effects-heavy scenes with bits of talking in between. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi action and violence." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Absolutely Fabulous"
Pour some Champagne, light a smoke and put on something gorgeous, dahling, because the women of "Absolutely Fabulous" are back. It's been 24 years since Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley made their debut as hard-partying best friends Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone on the BBC sitcom, and they bring the same outrageous boozy charm to their big-screen adventure, "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie." They've also brought along some familiar faces, including Eddy's put-upon daughter, Saffron (Julia Sawalha), and long-suffering assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks), as well as a slew of celebrities, models and designers in delightful cameos. Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson and Chris Colfer play small roles. Fans of the series will be relieved to see that Eddy (Saunders, who created the show and wrote the film's screenplay) and Patsy (Lumley) haven't matured a bit during their time away from the screen. But no prior knowledge of the characters is needed to appreciate such overblown selfishness and superficiality in a post-Kardashian world. An opening scene shows Patsy injecting her own face and lips with a syringe as part of her regular get-ready routine. "You need to be using fetus blood and a little spritz of afterbirth," she advises her friend. Patsy is a successful magazine editor, while Eddy's career in fashion public relations has stalled. She dreams of representing supermodel Kate Moss — who happens to be a guest at Patsy's London fashion show — but their meeting is disastrous: Eddy accidentally pushes the supermodel into the Thames and becomes a pariah blamed for her death, which is depicted as an international tragedy. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language including sexual references, and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: Running time: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Jason Bourne"
Jason Bourne, as played by Matt Damon across four movies, is forever disappearing off the grid only to reluctantly resurface years later and again menace the CIA. He's the spy who came in from the cold only to return to the cold, come in again, and, yet again, head back to the cold. In the chilly and bleak "Jason Bourne," the amnesia-ed assassin has been resurrected again, along with director Paul Greengrass, with whom Damon returns to the franchise after a nine year break. Bourne is still brooding. Greengrass' hand-held camera is still frenetic. And the saga's lethal precision is still sharp. The spy game, already far from a martini-sipping affair in previous installments, is resolutely grim in "Jason Bourne." The superspy, now a hulking mass of bullet-scarred muscle, is spending his days torturing himself in bare-knuckle brawls, haunted by his past. In shattering set-pieces and terse emotionless dialogue, any remaining sunlight has been drained away. The amount of people brazenly killed by Vincent Casell, the "asset" in Bourne's pursuit, may well outnumber the words spoken by Bourne in the entire film. Though first conceived in 1980 by Robert Ludlum, Bourne is perhaps the ultimate post-9/11 hero. Especially in the hands of Greengrass (who also employed his gritty realism in the Sept. 11 drama "Flight 93"), Bourne is a wrecking ball of accountability for America's clandestine past. He's part fantasy (his preternatural control of out-of-control events is reassuring) and part reality (American disillusionment made visceral). In "Jason Bourne," the digital dragnet is tightening around Bourne. The film is self-consciously set in a post-Snowden world; the CIA is hacked by Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles, whose smarts have given all of these films a kick), who's threatening to reveal the covert Treadstone operation. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence and action and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Bad Moms"
The comedy "Bad Moms " fancies itself a "Hangover" for the PTA set. And, while a wild send-up of modern parental perfection — that insidious idea that exists only in commercials and glossy magazines — is a worthy and fresh subject for a fun summer comedy, "Bad Moms" is ultimately rather conventional. Set in an upper middle class Chicago suburb, "Bad Moms" centers on Amy (Mila Kunis), a perpetually stressed and overworked 32-year-old with a part time job and two super busy pre-teens. Lest you think Kunis is a little too young to have pre-teens, the first line in the movie has her explaining that she got pregnant at 20. The movie is on the defense before it even gets going. Amy spends her days shuttling her kids (Oona Laurence and Emjay Anthony) from school to soccer practice to Russian lessons. She puts up with grief from her incompetent 20-something boss (Clark Duke), her loser husband Mike (David Walton) and the mean moms of the PTA (Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith, Annie Mumolo). She does her son's school projects for him and apologizes profusely to her ungrateful family for being late with the beautiful homemade roast chicken she's made for dinner while her husband sits around like a dope. And she does all of this while still maintaining perfect hair, makeup and clothes. Her breaking point comes when she realizes her spouse is not only a lazy dope, but also cheating on her with a woman from the internet. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual material, full frontal nudity, language throughout, and drug and alcohol content." RUNNING TIME: ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Jason Bourne" keeps saga sharp By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Jason Bourne, as played by Matt Damon across four movies, is forever disappearing off the grid only to reluctantly resurface years later and again menace the CIA. He's the spy who came in from the cold only to return to the cold, come in again, and, yet again, head back to the cold. Especially in the hands of Greengrass (who also employed his gritty realism in the Sept. 11 drama "Flight 93"),
Bourne is a wrecking ball of accountability for America's clandestine past. He's part fantasy (his preternatural control of out-ofcontrol events is reassuring) and part reality (American disillusionment made visceral). In "Jason Bourne," the digital dragnet is tightening around Bourne. The film is selfconsciously set in a post-Snowden world; the CIA is hacked by Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles, whose smarts have given all of these films a kick), who's threatening to reveal the covert Treadstone operation. The film, penned by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse (editor of previous "Bourne" films, and also this one), introduces a tech magnate (Riz Ahmed) whose celebrated social networking platform is secretly feeding information to CIA
director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones, whose wonderful sad face at this point has everything good and bad about America written all over it). In a way, Bourne is himself a leak. He's a rogue weapon who can't remember his own encryption code. Here, the mystery he's trying to solve revolves around his father's role in his initial recruitment. But aside from updating to today's surveillance state, "Jason Bourne" largely sticks to the franchise's familiar moves, and they often don't have the same kinetic finesse they used to. Here again are scenes of digging through old CIA documents, breathless stretches of crowded escapes and public rendezvous where Bourne fools lurking agents.
"Bad Moms" has its moments By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Like many of you, I have a good mom. In fact, again like many of you, I’ll fight anyone out there that thinks they have a better mom than I do. Now that said, it’s perfectly reasonable and quite easy to empathize with the titular bad moms in this weekend’s surprise hit comedy “Bad Moms”. It’s an unlikely concept even in 2016 that a cast where the six leads are all female and funny can be successful. They don’t use cleverness to win you over. This comedy hits you right over the head and begs you to laugh at its antics. And because I was in a crowded weekend showing, clearly with an overwhelming female audience, I enjoyed myself almost more by listening to the reactions out of all the moms in the rows around
me than I did by watching the zany Hollywood conglomeration on the silver screen in front of me. Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis) is an overworked mom. She’s the ‘have it all’ type and why shouldn’t she be. That’s the American dream. She has a husband that loves her, a cute house, two darling children, a so-ugly-he’s-cute pooch, and a job at a hipster coffee brand for which she has both aptitude and passion. She’s also burned out beyond belief and can’t figure out why the one trait for which she is most recognizable is her lack of punctuality. After a day of late to school, stuck at the vet, boss on her back, lunch down her blouse, and coffee spilled in the minivan, she has a nervous breakdown in the middle on an emergency PTA meeting where the resident Head Mom in Charge (Christina Applegate) establishes
martial law over the distribution of safe desserts at the upcoming Bake Sale. Amy’s done. She checks out and into the nearest watering hole where she meets up with Carla (Kathryn Hahn), a divorced mother of a giant middle school athlete, and Kiki (Kristen Bell), the mousy mom to four, including toddler twins, who plays second class citizen to her husband by staying at home. Over too much whisky, the trio decides that enough is enough and they’re going to take back a modicum of their own identities. Power to them. Amy’s rebelliousness is also punctuated when she finds hubbie (David Walton) carrying on an Internet affair with some dairy farmer (Leah McKendrick) on the other side of the country. She starts driving an old muscle car and stops cooking breakfast (and lunch) for her winsome kids (Emjay Anthony, Oona
Laurence). The kids fear, at first, that their mom is no longer supportive or loving, but a heart to heart over why they now need to do their own homework and take responsibility for household chores sets them and the record straight. Having no children of my own, and thus being an expert on rearing everyone else’s, I find this scene about over-indulged, spoiled children being strung along into entitlement by their tiger parents to be spot on. Take that, you little brats. I could also hear the audience about me collectively hold their breath as this zinger buzzed a little too close to home. Nothing supplants watching a comedy on the big screen and this is my Exhibit A. The plot of the movie, from comedy mainstays Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (“The Hangover” franchise), follows Amy as she attempts to indict and replace Gwendolyn as the president

of the PTA. She has to fight off a bad impression and a couple of cronies (Jada Pinkett Smith, Annie Mumolo) to do it. This movie is also chock full of sexual hijinks, especially when Amy meets a good looking widower (Jay Hernandez) at the kids’ school. The funniest bit for me, though, was a series of mother-daughter interviews that plays immediately before the closing credits where our six lead actresses talk about motherhood with their own real life moms. That’s a testimony to the type of comedy you’d find yourself at with this one: filthy, truthful, and absolutely okay to take your own (adult) mother to see with you. “Bad Moms” runs 100 minutes and is rated R for sexual material, full frontal nudity, language throughout, and drug and alcohol content. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above is the Dirty's Pile at Dirty's Bar and Grill in Charleston. Below, the fresh caps off of the appetizer portion of the menu.
Dirty's Bar and Grill in Charleston By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge On a recent trek to Charleston I came across another college-town treasure in Dirty's Bar and Grill. Dirty's is just moments from the Eastern Illinois University campus, located at 706 Lincoln Ave. in Charleston. They are open seven days a week and have plenty to choose from. You can check out everything they have to offer on their website at www. dirtysbarandgrill.com. With a name like Dirty's for a bar in a central Illinois college community, I know what you're probably thinking — sketchy. That's not the case. The name is ode to their selections of martinis on the drink menu. Dirty's offers 20 different specialty martinis on their menu. From names like the Beanie Tini, the Loosey Goosey, the Pineapple Express and the Sheeky Cheeky, it's easy to see they like to have fun at Dirty's. It's the same way with the food. My dinner partner Evan and I swung by Dirty's following the IHSA boys' state track meet and weren't disappointed. Unfortunately I wasn't able to partake in any of those martini selections, but I didn't hesitate heading to the unique portion of the food menu. I ordered the fresh caps off of the appetizer menu and then sniffed out a Dirty's specialty — the Dirty's Pile. The fresh caps came out first, they are fried portabella mushroom caps breaded and fried and served with ranch dressing. What really stood out to me is how they reminded me of homemade fried mushrooms. The breading really reminded me of the way my mom used to fry up morel mushrooms when I was a kid. The breading had a rich and hearty taste and the mushrooms

themselves were juicy as heck. It was a good way to start the meal. Maybe the best thing was the fresh caps weren't even supposed to be on the menu that day, but when they found out we were out of towners, they made them up special for us. Now that's some service. Next it was time to get a gander at the Dirty's Pile. This glutenous treasure is as awesome as it sounds. It was simply seasoned waffle fries (the elite cut of the French fry family), breaded chicken chunks, cheddar-jack cheese, Dirty's

signature buffalo sauce and ranch dressing. Pure classic. The buffalo sauce had a great kick, but was not overly spicy, the creaminess of the ranch cut it well and then the juiciness of the chicken and fluffiness of the waffle fries pushed it over the top. Each cog in the machine made for a gratuitous bar-food masterpiece. Evan followed suit and got the same thing and totally agreed with my assessment. The atmosphere at Dirty's was quite nice with a long bar for
August 11, 2016
patrons to sit at, or high tables around the restaurant area for additional seating. The walls had warm colors to invite a relaxing place where you could stay awhile. As we started perusing the rest of the menu we could see there was plenty to offer at Dirty's. There are great choices like the Dirty's nachos off of the appetizer menu, comprised of tortilla chips, chili, queso lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, sour cream and salsa. For a $2 up charge you can add chicken or spicy taco meat, too.
There is also the cheezy squealer with grilled ham, bacon, cheddar cheese, spinach, tomato, on sourdough and served with chips and the dirty's stud, which is a baked potato stuffed with chicken strips, buffalo sauce, cheddar-jack cheese, bacon bits, chives and ranch dressing. Dirty's makes its own line of sauces also, including: Dirty's signature hot, Kansas style Q, the Yum Yum, Southwest, Buffalo, Sweet Chili, Sweet Teriyaki, Sweet BBQ and Garlic Parmesan. Those sauces go well with Dirty's chicken wings, served either bone-in or bone-out. They are dry rubbed and baked and then spun in your choice of sauce. You will also find a burger portion of the menu, seafood portion, salads, wraps, flatbread sandwiches, soups and a kid's menu at Dirty's. There is also a dessert menu. I'd like to check out the martini sundae off that delectable dessert menu, including fried chocolate chip cookie dough, vanilla bean ice cream, Oreo crumbles and chocolate syrup. If that doesn't get you salivating I don't know what's wrong with you. The prices weren't to extravagant either. My Dirty's Pile cost $9 and the fresh caps were $7, not too shabby for the amount of food that came with the order. But what else do you expect out of a college town joint? It's usually pretty easy to find cheap and glutinous anywhere near an institution of higher learning and that's right up my alley, because I like to consider myself a college kid at heart. So next time you're passing through Charleston, I definitely recommend Dirty's as a place to go when you gotta eat.

According to Paul Leahy, president of the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Council and director of golf at Tan-Tar-A Resort, the Lake of the Ozarks rivals any golf destination in the country. "When you consider that we have 14 outstanding courses crafted by some legendary golfers and designers, all within 30 miles from one another, and at some of the most affordable rates you'll find, it's hard to beat what the Lake area has to offer for golfers and their families," Leahy says. "It's the quality, convenience and affordability that make the Lake of the Ozarks the go-to place for golf." The Oaks course at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach was designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge. Recognized as the "Best Golf Weekend Getaway" by AAA's Best of the Midwest magazine, the Lake of the Ozarks has a well-earned reputation for providing top-notch golf and accommodations yeararound. "We've heard time and time again from visiting golfers from all over the U.S. that they had considered going to Florida, California, Arizona or Alabama, but when they looked at the travel time and expense, the Lake of the Ozarks made the most sense. For many, it's the perfect fit," says Leahy. The most sought-after courses at the Lake were planned by some of the best to design courses or play the game: Arnold Palmer (Osage National Golf Resort, Lake Ozark), Tom Weiskopf (Old Kinderhook Golf Resort, Camdenton), Robert Trent Jones, Sr. (The Cove at The Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark), Ken Kavanaugh (The Ridge at The Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark), Jack Nicklaus (The Club at Porto Cima, Sunrise Beach), Floyd Farley (Lake Valley Golf Club, Camdenton), Jim Lewis (Hidden Lakes at Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach) and Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge (The Oaks at Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach). Although these are the marquee courses at the Lake, there are many more gems that have endeared themselves to golfers at the Lake of the Ozarks over the years. Sycamore Creek Golf Club (Osage Beach) is one of the only golf courses in the country built around a working aquaculture habitat. Bear Creek Valley Golf Club (Osage Beach) features some of the most dramatic elevation changes in the area. The Golf Club at Deer Chase (Linn Creek), Eldon Golf Club (Eldon), Indian Rock Golf Club (Gravois Mills) and Rolling

The Oaks course at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach was designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge. Hills Country Club (Versailles) are all off the beaten path, but those golfers who seek them out find they are well worth the short, scenic drive and offer some of the most enjoyable holes and affordable prices in the area. For more details on the courses at the Lake of the Ozarks, visit the golfing page at www.FunLake. com, or check out the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Trail website at www. LakeoftheOzarksGolfTrail.com. All of the courses are interspersed throughout the Lake area, yet conveniently located within a 30-minute drive from one another (some are even only five minutes apart). This ease of layout makes it easy to play two different courses in a day, or all 14 over an extended stay. For a golf getaway of any length, the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Trail makes it simple for those visiting the area to combine golf and lodging for one affordable rate. The Golf Trail's lodging members, as well as many additional lodging facilities at the Lake of the Ozarks, specialize in booking money-saving Golf Getaway Packages, where all a golfer has to do is make one phone call to the facility of his or her choice to have their lodging and tee times booked for them, all for a price that's lower than booking golf and lodging s e p a r a t e l y. Midwest Wine and Beer Festival planned For The Edge Visitors to the Lake can sample some of the Show-Me State's best wines and beers at the Midwest Wine & Brew Festival, from 2 until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at The Lodge of Four Seasons, 315 Four Seasons Drive in Lake Ozark. Missouri has long been known as a major producer of fine wines and easy drinking beers. In fact, when the country of France experienced a crippling grape blight in the early 20th century, it was Missouri that came to the rescue by sending grafts of blight-resistent grape vines across the seas to supplement the bleeding nation's grape crop. And, of course, Missouri was the birthplace of Annheuser-Busch, which began producing Budweiser in 1876 and quickly became the leading brewer in the US. Missouri's beautiful and fertile countryside still produces some of the best wines in the nation, including the state's own Norton grape, and the Show-Me State has quickly established itself as a leader in the micro-brewery scene as well. This all goes to reason that the Midwest Wine & Brew Festival is a can't-miss event for seasoned connoisseurs and amateur aficionados alike. "Last year, we had around 450500 people come out to enjoy the different offerings from the excellent wineries and breweries from around the area, and everyone was really impressed with the quality of the products," says Jamie Beitzell, marketing, events and visitor center coordinator at the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. "We're hoping that we surpass those
numbers this year. We've gone out of our way to bring in new participants and vendors, and we have a new host venue in The Lodge of Four Seasons, so we're really excited about it. It's going to be a great time and a lot of fun." The event, presented by the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, will feature over 20 different vendors representing some of
the state's most popular wineries and microbreweries, as well as a meadery and a local distillery that specializes in six different types of moonshine. All vendors will have their wares available to sample and purchase. Lake-area restaurants also will be on hand to offer light fare as a perfect complement to the wine and brew samples. Advance tickets for the festival
are available for $15 and will include a tasting of all of the wines and beers, as well as a souvenir wine glass. Tickets bought the day of the event are $20. For more information, call the Lake Area Chamber at 573-964-1008. Or, visit the Wine and Brew Festival page on the Chamber's website (www. LakeAreaChamber.com) to purchase tickets.

Aside from the Midwest Wine & Brew Fest, there are ample opportunities to sip on the Lake's best wines. The Lake of the Ozarks Wine Trail features a handful of stops, inviting visitors to sample area wines and enjoy vineyard views. They feature a pastoral setting (Seven Springs Winery and Shawnee Bluff Vineyard), in-town convenience (Golden Rock Winery), and scenic lake views (Shawnee Bluff Winery). Visitors will find a variety of vintages for tasting and amenities such as food to complement the wine, a gift shop, picnic tables and more. Each stop along the trail has its own unique sights, sounds, smells and tastes to excite the senses and create lasting memories. And, for those looking to spend the weekend sampling the Lake's best vintages, there are many different lodging options to complete the perfect "sip and stay" getaway. From large, fullservice resorts to smaller, familyowned resorts, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds and RV parks, to chain hotels and independent motels, condominiums and vacation homes, the Lake has it all. Many of the Lake's lodging properties offer different specialty discount packages throughout the year. For a complete list of lodging options, please check out the "Places to Stay" tab on www.FunLake.com. For more information about all the fun activities, events and dining options at the "Best Recreational Lake" in the Nation, call the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) at 1-800-FUN-LAKE, or visit the CVB's award-winning website, www.FunLake.com.

Rep announces 50th anniversary season For The Edge The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis announced recently its 50th Anniversary Season for 2016-2017. The Rep’s biggest season yet runs September through April at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, kicking off with Stephen Sondheim’s masterwork musical Follies. Follies runs September 7–October 2, followed by world premiere Until the Flood (October 12–November 6), A Christmas Carol (November 30–December 24), All My Sons (January 4–29, 2017), To Kill A Mockingbird (February 8–March 5, 2017) and Million Dollar Quartet (March 15–April 9, 2017). The Berges Family Foundation is the Mainstage Season Sponsor for The Rep’s 50th Anniversary Season. and supporters. We expect the excitement surrounding this special anniversary year to carry us into the future." The Rep’s 2016-2017 season subscription campaign is underway, with packages available for the Mainstage and Studio Theatre series. Mainstage subscriptions range from $108 to $489. Studio Theatre shows will be announced this summer. Tony Awards. Until The Flood, by Dael Orlandersmith. Directed by Neel Keller. A w o r l d p re m i e re . T h e R e p h a s commissioned celebrated writer, performer and Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith to write and perform a one-woman play about the recent unrest in our region. She has fashioned a sensitive and moving portrayal of the people in our community, and how they feel about an event that placed St. Louis in a spotlight it didn’t expect or relish. A Christmas Carol, adapted by David H. Bell, from the novella by Charles Dickens. Directed by Steven Woolf. Charles Dickens’ immortal tale comes to The Rep stage for the first time in 35 years. The redemption story of Ebenezer Scrooge endures because it touches a core part of our humanity — the idea that empathy, compassion and generosity can thaw even the coldest heart. All My Sons, by Arthur Miller. Directed by Seth Gordon. Miller’s breakthrough play is a searing and very personal search for morality that has
shattering repercussions. A factory owner’s corrupt business practices during World War II come back to haunt him and his family in this Tony Award-winning drama. To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, adapted by Christopher Sergel. Directed by Risa Brainin. This adaptation of Lee’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel brings one of American literature’s best-loved novels to vivid life. Join the precocious Scout and her wise father Atticus Finch in a story that has only gained emotional resonance in the 55 years since its publication. Million Dollar Quartet, book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. Original concept and direction by Floyd Mutrux. Inspired by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Directed by Hunter Foster. When Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins get together to jam at Sun Studios, the air crackles with star power. This jukebox musical features massive hits from all four performers. For additional information on the upcoming season, visit http://www.repstl.org.

People planner Artisans sought for Litchfield market
The Litchfield Tourism Office would like to announce that registration is open for the October 9th Litchfield Pickers Market, Art & Crafter vendor booths. Once again as a final hurrah for the 2016 Pickers Market season, this Litchfield Pickers Market will not only incorporate the vintage, antique, and refurbished items the market is known for, but it will be a special month featuring the creative talents of Artisans and Crafters. This market will be a one stop shop for visitors to accomplish all of their pre-holiday shopping in one convenient and fun location. Litchfield Tourism and Prairie Pickers would like to invite you to be an art vendor for the October 9, 2016 Litchfield Pickers Market! The Litchfield Pickers Market takes place every second Sunday of the month from 9 AM to 3 PM in downtown Litchfield beginning on the corner of Union Avenue (Route 16) and State Street. During the market, the streets are filled with around 100 vendors specializing in all items prior to 1980. During the October 9th Market, a special section will be allocated to Artisans and Crafters. All items must be handcrafted by participants, and no buy/sell or retail mass marketed merchandise is allowed. For registration requirements and an application, please log on to www.visitlitchfield.com/events or pick one up at 120 East Ryder Street in Litchfield. For questions call the Litchfield Tourism Office at 866-733-5833.
Saint Louis Art Museum showcases folk art
The Saint Louis Art Museum will present Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum, an exhibition charting the development of folk art in America while pondering the motivations for artists who were at times considered to work outside of canonical art history. The ticketed exhibition will be on view now through Sept. 11. The exhibition explores the continuum of American folk art and the concept of a “self-taught geniusâ€? through more than 100 works of art from the Revolutionary War to contemporary times. When Self-Taught Genius premiered at the American Folk Art Museum in 2014, The New York Times called it “enthrallingâ€? and “an intellectually provocative effort to rethink the nature of artistic creativity.â€? Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, the exhibition and its national tour are made possible by generous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, as part of its 75th anniversary initiative. “Because folk art has not been a major collecting area for the Saint Louis Art Museum, we sought an exhibition that presents our visitors with works of exceptional quality that tell the story of a uniquely American artistic tradition,â€? said Brent R. Benjamin, Barbara B. Taylor Director of the Saint Louis Art Museum. Paintings, works on paper, textiles, decorative arts and sculpture are presented within context of seven perspectives from which artists are compelled to create—achievers, encoders, messengers, improvement, reformers, ingenuity, and guides. Achievers: Working outside the realm of fine arts, achievers often created works of art that were a testament to their own passionate vision or grandiose thought. For example, Marino A u r u t i i n t e n d e d h i s 11 - f o o t E n c y c l o p e d i c P a l a c e t o s e r v e a s a model for a 136-floor museum that would celebrate every achievement of humankind. Encoders: Winthrop Chandler, whose Scenic Overmantel oil painting on panel is included in the exhibition, can be viewed as an example of an encoder, who might blur the meanings of a creation to keep outsiders away or to maintain complete control over the art. Messengers: Artists like MartĂn RamĂrez, whose Reina is featured in the exhibition, might create works that invite the viewer into their personal world by incorporating symbols that announce their visions or beliefs. Improvement: Represented in the exhibition by self-taught artists depicting their own refinements or achievements, or those attained by their subject, improvement is exemplified in Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog, a portrait by Ammi Phillips that emphasizes the genteelness of the young, 19th-century sitter. Admission is free for Members. For the general public, tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $6 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children age 5 and under. Tickets are available in person or through MetroTix. Tickets purchased through MetroTix incur a service charge.
