“G-Force”

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s usual visual-effects mayhem has been shrunk down to rodent size. Not much has been lost in inter-species translation. “G-Force” is centered on an elite squad of guinea pigs who resemble small(er) versions of Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible.” A number of stars lend their voices (Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan, Penelope Cruz) in a 3-D action farce that despite its diminutive characters, maintains all the large-scale obviousness of your standard blockbuster. The guinea pigs spout off tired slang (“Holla!”) and scroll through their Facebook pages. (One highlight is Cage’s voice work as Speckles the mole, which probably sounds like damning by faint praise.) If “G-Force” has a cousin, it isn’t “Ratatouille” (not by a long shot), but “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” the 2007 film that also married live action with furry, animated cliches. The on-screen actors (Zach Galifianakis, Will Arnett, Bill Nighy) do their best to stay cheerful, but perhaps their experience is best represented in a scene in which a surveillance mosquito flies up Nighy’s nose. Directed by visual effects veteran Hoyt Yeatman, the film’s 3-D effects — depending on your point of view — make the viewing experience either more interesting or simply more expensive. RATED: PG for some mild action and rude humor. RUNNING TIME: 89 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

“Orphan”

Esther is unfailingly polite, a sensitive painter and pianist, a vision of traditional feminine charm in her prim dresses and bows. But this 9-year-old also has a way with a hammer and a handgun and knows a thing or two about arson and destruction of evidence. Yes, she’s complicated, the little girl at the center of “Orphan,” a descendant from a long line of cinematic evil children. Still, despite similarities to predecessors like “The Bad Seed” and “The Omen,” this wellcrafted flick has frights all its own. Director Jaume ColletSerra, working from a devilishly clever script by David Leslie Johnson, maintains steady suspense while mercifully mixing in some moments of dark humor. He’s got a strong cast to work with in Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard and CCH Pounder (Claudette from “The Shield”), but in young Isabelle Fuhrman, he has a formidable force. Fuhrman, who was only 11 when she shot “Orphan,” can command the screen with just a sunny smile or a menacing glare. She’s called upon to do some gnarly stuff here and more than rises to the challenge. Sure, sometimes Esther seems like an impossibly unstoppable killing machine — like a Soviet-era spy in a pint-size body — but seeing how far “Orphan” will go is part of the fun. Farmiga and Sarsgaard star as Kate and John, a wealthy Connecticut couple reeling

August 13, 2009

from the stillbirth of their third child. Wanting to give all that love to a child who needs it, they decide to adopt Esther, who’s obviously more than a little different from the other girls at the orphanage. RATED: R for disturbing violent content, some sexuality and language. RUNNING TIME: 123 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Shrink”

Say what you will about some of Kevin Spacey’s more questionable choices over the past decade, movies like “Pay It Forward,” ‘’K-PAX,” ‘’The Life of David Gale” and his laborof-love Bobby Darin biopic, “Beyond the Sea.” When he’s on — when he has strong dialogue to work with and solid actors to play off of — he’s got a presence and a command that are tough to beat. “Shrink” allows him to show off one of his strongest sides: He’s sharply verbal but darkly funny. He’s the central figure in an L.A. story that may seem too familiar, one in which the members of a large ensemble, many of whom are involved in entertainment, end up being cosmically connected. The coincidences can get more than a bit contrived. And it’s way too obviously ironic that Spacey’s Dr. Henry Carter, a psychiatrist to Hollywood’s elite, is in desperate need of repair himself. Among Carter ’s mixed-up clientele are a veteran starlet struggling to stay relevant (Saffron Burrows); an Alist actor who’s an alcoholic sex addict (an uncredited Robin Williams), an obsessive-compulsive agent (Dallas Roberts); and a wannabe screenwriter (Mark Webber). Into Carter ’s appointment book stumbles a precocious but troubled high school student (Keke Palmer), whom he takes on as a pro bono case. Yes, these all sound like cliched types. Still, the characters in Thomas Moffett’s script are intriguing enough, and director Jonas Pate gets sufficiently lively work from his eclectic cast, that you end up caring about them anyway. R for drug content throughout and pervasive language including some sexual references. 104 min. Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Ugly Truth”

At the end of this drearily formulaic romantic comedy, as our two leads are finally admitting they’ve fallen for each other (no spoilers here, folks), Katherine Heigl’s character asks Gerard Butler’s why he’s in love with her. Basically he says he has no idea, only he phrases it with a word we can’t reprint here. Our sentiments exactly. Obviously, in a battle-ofthe-sexes comedy like this, the guy and the girl who hate each other at the beginning realize they’re meant for each other by the end. But there’s nothing even remotely likable, much less lovable, about Heigl’s Abby Richter. She’s a control freak who runs a tight ship at a Sacramento TV station, producing the morning news with unflappable efficiency and zero creativity.

She uses the same approach in her personal life, which is why she’s hopelessly single, despite the fact that she looks like Katherine Heigl. Sure, it’s meant as a joke, but come on. The idea of a woman being so rigid and frigid is purely archaic — which is why it’s so disheartening that the script comes from three women: Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, who had much greater success writing female characters in “Legally Blonde” and “The House Bunny,” and first-timer Nicole Eastman. (Robert Luketic, who also did better work with “Legally Blonde,” directs the slapstick antics in rather unspectacular fashion.) When Butler’s brash Mike Chadway gets hired to boost ratings at the station after hosting a popular cable-access show on dating, he and Abby immediately clash. Naturally, that will change. RATED: R for sexual content and language. RUNNING TIME: 100 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“Funny People”

If only Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen hadn’t gotten in the car. If only they hadn’t left Los Angeles, where everything was going so well, and driven north to Marin County, where everything falls apart. Judd Apatow would have had his most mature, accomplished film to date. Instead, the last hour or so meanders interminably, its tone wavering all over the place, leading to a quickie conclusion that feels pat. And that is such a letdown when you consider the strength and ambition of the material that preceded it. “Funny People” provides the eternally adolescent Sandler with yet another opportunity to show his serious side, following substantive turns in “PunchDrunk Love” and “Spanglish.” But it also allows Apatow, as writer and director, to display some previously unexplored darker instincts, with a story that mixes his typically raunchy guy talk with deeper discussions about mortality. Both men rise to the challenge. But Apatow should have maintained his focus on the friendship that forms between Sandler (as superstar George Simmons) and Rogen (as aspiring stand-up Ira Wright) as well as the established comics and wannabes that surround them. Instead, he has his characters make an unnecessary road trip in search of George’s long-lost love — with both George and the film losing their way. George, who’s not exactly a thinly veiled version of the real-life Sandler, learns he has a terminal disease. He hires Ira as his assistant, joke writer and friend — and the one person in whom he feels comfortable confiding. Apatow’s wife, Leslie Mann, figures prominently in the tedious and overlong third act. RATED: R for language and crude sexual humor throughout, and some sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 145 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Movies Sweetness shines through in “Paper Heart” By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — You could think of “Paper Heart” as sort of a benevolent version of the Sacha Baron Cohen model, with its mixture of documentary and fiction. Only instead of providing raunchy satire or exposing people’s prejudices, it seems all Charlyne Yi wants to do is sweetly entertain. The writer, actress and standup comic travels the country interviewing regular people about being in love, a phenomenon that has eluded her in her early 20s. She goes to a biker bar in Oklahoma City, a playground in Atlanta and everywhere in between. She also gleans insight from friends, including her “Knocked Up” costars Seth Rogen and Martin Starr. At the same time, Yi (playing a version of herself) finds that she’s unexpectedly falling for a new guy she’s met named Michael (Michael Cera, playing a version of himself). They court at hipster hangouts in Hollywood — Cera in a wide array of hoodies, Yi in her messy ponytail and dark-rimmed glasses — play music for each other and hold hands in the grocery store while shopping for frozen pizza. This is the made-up subplot. In real life, Yi and Cera are close pals; they even co-wrote the score for “Paper Heart” together. It was rumored that they’d been dating and recently broke up, though Yi now says they’ve always been just friends. Again, the lines get blurrier. Meanwhile, the “director” of Yi’s documentary, Nick Jasenovec, is played by actor Jake Johnson; the real Jasenovec is the real director of “Paper Heart,” making his feature debut. Confused? Just go with it.

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by Overture Films, Michael Cera, second right, and Charlyne Yi, right, are shown in a scene from, “Paper Heart.” Sure, it might be a little too twee for its own good, with its use of intentionally crude puppets to recreate the love stories Yi’s interview subjects share with her. She wanted to find a unique, whimsical way to depict these tales, rather than just showing talking heads, but the figures and sets she and her dad fashioned are just too self-consciously cute. Nevertheless, “Paper Heart” is

a charming little movie based on a clever concept that will leave you with a genuinely positive feeling afterward. Yi is a nerd goddess — goofy, tomboyish, unapologetically awkward with an off-kilter sense of humor — and the fact that she’s so self-deprecating and seems so earnest in her quest to find the meaning of true love makes her pretty hard to resist. Regardless

of the setting or the person she’s interviewing, she never condescends, she always seems open to hearing what people have to say and even willing to make herself vulnerable. “Paper Heart” becomes a little too conventional when it starts focusing on how the constant documentary cameras are taking a toll on Yi and Cera’s relationship, as if they were reality TV stars under

a microscope. (“Do you need to take my microphone?” he turns and asks the crew at the end of one of their dates.) It’s really a rather tired complaint to be making, even in a semi-fictional setting. But for the most part, “Paper Heart” is way more innovative than the formulaic romantic comedies that all too often trek through the multiplex, and a much-needed refreshing change.

“Funny People” better than expected By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Judd Apatow’s new film, “Funny People,” is getting a bad rap. The buzz was nil. Most folks I heard discussing the movie before its release were concerned that it was going to be too bleak. Others were bothered by a serious lack of faith in Adam Sandler’s ability to anchor a movie that had any dramatic aspirations at all. And these frustrations were clearly expressed in a dismal take at the opening weekend box office. I’m here to tell you, though, that when approached as a dark comedy – as a tragically unhappy comedythis film is quite good. Judd Apatow and Sandler are old friends. When the two were aspiring comedians in the early ‘90s, they shared an apartment in Los Angeles while trying their luck on the dangerously competitive and strangely self-supportive stand-up circuit. When the opportunity came to make this movie, once again written and directed by Apatow, I’m

sure it was the best course of action to fill the call sheets with the sort of actors that make you feel safe. That way, as Apatow has wisely done, you surround yourself with a stable of performers who feel like a family and can certainly lend that type of nuance to their roles. George Simmons (Sandler) is a famous comedian and actor who is, at age forty, diagnosed with a grave illness, one that gives him only a slim chance at survival. When confronted with his immediate mortality, an

active depression takes him over. He gives up the crock lifestyle his notorious pictures and fame have brought him. Characters such as a talking baby and the nefarious Mer-Man fall by the wayside). He takes back to stages at smoky nightclubs in hopes of finding the mojo that’s left him, replaced with deadening celebrity. He wants to be the dorky guy trying to make it oh so much more than the millionaire who has it all. In this way, Sandler was the logical and perfect choice for this role. I have admired his performances in “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Spanglish,” knowing that this guy had far more talent than he showed us in dreck like “Little Nicky” and “Billy Madison.” George hires Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) as an assistant/protégé/friend to console him during the worst periods of his illness. Ira has been trying to break into the comedy fraternity for years and meeting George, an idol, is like achieving a perverse version of his own dream. Rogen, for his part, is a comic relief monkey, but plays the part expertly. He’s a long time stable in Apatow’s repertory

company. In fact, co-stars Leslie Mann (the director’s wife), who plays George’s “the one who got away” ex-girlfriend, and Jonah Hill, who plays Ira’s jealous roommate, have also appeared in all three films directed by Judd Apatow. His daughters, Maude and Iris, also have small parts in the movie (albeit ones that could have been excised from the long picture for deleted scenes in the inevitable unrated DVD package). The dark, brooding picture is punctuated (frequently) by a signature brand of raunchy humor, self-deprecation, and Eric Bana doing a bizarre take on the Australian accent, but if you peel through this rigmarole, take away some of the shenanigans, and forget anything to do with the greasy-haired Jason Schwartzman (who plays another, more successful, roommate) you’ll find a movie that is both telling and perhaps a touch autobiographical about life in the comedy world. Apatow, for his part, isn’t telling, but the truth appears to be up there on the screen for us to judge for ourselves.

Get Rid of that Ache in Your Back...Once and For All...

Finally...the Obvious Answer to BACK PAIN! People are sweating up a storm—doing yoga, lifting weights and going to the fitness center. They’re getting acupuncture, taking glucosamine and even miracle herbs. But when they’re still in agony...when even pain killers, shots, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories don’t make a dent in their back pain, they abandon hope and wonder, “WHAT’S MISSING?” The solution may be surprisingly simple...

I

magine if you could visit every healer in the world, and you finally found someone who could “fix” your back?

Imagine if you took a physical therapist, a trainer, a rehabilitation therapist, a chiropractor and a massage therapist—rolled them into one— and finally got help with problems like: SCIATICA—burning down the leg NUMBNESS—with tingling, throbbing and aching that haunts you day and night PINCHED NERVES—with electric shocks when you bend or lift SPASM—like being tortured “on the rack”—feels like something’s gotta give

this diagram of your spine, pelvis, vertebra, tailbone, hips and a couple muscles. Each one can cause pain, but if they’re all ganging up on you, it can be horrible!

The Hidden Healing Power of a Combination Approach If your car is having a lot of problems, you don’t just ask for an oil change. You want the engine, brakes, coolant, tire pressure—everything checked out! You don’t want to drive a mile and have it towed right back in again. So why should your back be any different? Why would you only get “part” of your back fixed—just a muscle or a bone or a nerve? Why not the whole ball of wax? #1-bones #2-joints

#3-muscles

Well, at HealthSource®, that’s actually what we’ve done. We’ve combined super-powerful healing techniques from different professions, and this combination approach is called Progressive Rehab™. It works so well, here’s what Melba Walker had to say after being treated at HealthSource®: “I had sciatic nerve and pain down my left leg and across my back. One doctor recommended shots in the spine and I wouldn’t take them. I couldn’t drive, hardly walk, couldn’t get upstairs and couldn’t sit or stand for any period of time. I rested, put ice packs on my hip and back. Also took Voltaren every 6 hours, Valium 2 times daily and Motrin prescribed at the hospital. HealthSource has made me pretty mobile again and the pain has really subsided. I’m sleeping better and back to being independent. They certainly have handled my problem. I like their kindness and willingness to listen and help work on your problem. I also like their professionalism.” —Melba Walker What’s even better is you don’t have to roam the earth to get the “dream team” approach to your pain– it’s right here in your own backyard. In fact, you can even check it out FREE...but more on that in a minute. First, you should know about...

The MAGIC BULLET for Healing Your Back Healers have been searching for a “magic bullet” for decades—looking for the one nerve, muscle or bone that will finally unlock the mystery of back pain. But at HealthSource®, the “secret” is finally out of the bag—there really is no ONE “cure” for back pain. The reason is obvious—our bodies are far too complex, as you can see from Copyright 2009 HealthSource

#4-nerves

That’s why we treat your back with several powerful techniques that impact: MUSCLE: release techniques from therapists, chiropractors and trainers BONE: chiropractic adjustments to unlock stiffened up spine, hip and pelvic joints TENDON: pain-free therapies to soothe and support fast, lasting healing NERVE: advanced nerve release to get you well faster and stay that way REHAB: of spine and muscle to help rebalance, stretch and strengthen So this week we’re offering our our famous famous 191900 EXAM, point, $189 EXAM, for only $1700 - but justjust point, $189 —but untiluntil (DATE HERE). 8/31/09. Why would we give away an expensive exam like this? Because even when folks are in pain, we know how cautious they can be about something new. And we feel the same way...that if anything is really so great, it should prove itself. And since you don’t know us except from this letter, WE want you to realize...how our extraordinarily detailed exam can get to the root of your pain. You see, we go over everything with a fine-toothed comb, including:

spine, joint, body alignment grinding/clicking/painful turning joint/vertebra restriction & stiffness muscle knots, spasm and weakness tendons/ligaments orthopedic and neurological tests imbalances and compensations chronic aching and tingling reflexes, muscle strength adhesions in muscles/ligaments (even necessary X-RAYS are FREE) It’s important we go deep into why you have pain and problems— so we find out...

Where Is the Pain Really Coming From? Without this attention to detail, it’s easy to go down a lot of rabbit trails—all the while thinking you’re getting at the CAUSE when you’re only dealing with symptoms. That’s what pain relievers, muscle relaxants and cortisone are all about. Unfortunately... the pain almost always comes back and by that time, it’s probably become more serious and difficult to treat—so it takes longer and costs more to get better. That’s why the exclusive HealthSource® approach to eliminating back pain is about as close to a “magic bullet” as you can get, and it also gives us...

An Unfair Advantage If you had Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron on the same team, it wouldn’t really be fair. And our ‘dream team’, combination approach isn’t really fair to your pain. These techniques are so powerful, your pain hardly stands a chance! But maybe it’s been so long since you were pain-free that you don’t even remember what it’s like. Well then, just for a moment... IMAGINE: Feeling strong, fluid and flexible— carefree about lifting and bending IMAGINE: Getting down on the floor and wrestling with the kids or grandkids IMAGINE: Greeting the day with energy and enthusiasm—instead of dread! PICTURE Yourself working in the yard or doing chores around the house and actually enjoying it, because for the first time in years, you don’t hurt anymore! PICTURE Yourself getting back on your bike, going back to the golf course or just going out for a hike and having people ask, “Hey, how’s your back doing?” And you realize you forgot about it!

What’s Next for YOU? Since I’ve treated literally thousands of folks with every kind of back pain imaginable, I KNOW how easy it can be to live pain free again—even if you can’t imagine it. And it drives me crazy to see people suffering when they really don’t have to. That’s why it’s become my mission to get the word about our new combination approach to as many people as possible—and to make it so easy and risk free to check it out that folks would be crazy not to. We’re not promising a cure or claiming to be superior, we simply like to believe that our clinic is built on helping people feel better. So your next step is to grab this letter and call us before the offer expires. The details are in the coupon below. In a short time you could be living a completely different life—one without pain!

Family

“Dreams Are Forever” There’s still enough summer left to work in a good book By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Dreams are Forever is a story that takes place in 1956, and is about two young men who are in their senior year of high school. Dak and J.D. (Johnny David) are the main characters and the setting is Shawneetown. A couple of storylines take place throughout the book. The first about Dak’s family, and how his father was killed in the war. Second about his friendship with J.D. and how they are struggling with being in-between boy and man, searching for treasure and love at the same time. Finally, the twisting story of the finding of two abandoned graves, it’s link to slavery and a mysterious mansion in town. The story unfolds in a fascinating way, linking Dak’s family to the mansion, a place that the whole town finds intriguing. The book is a different genre’ and I am not totally sure who the target audience is, but it is a good read for men or women, young and old, those who enjoy history, especially since it takes place in historic Shawneetown. According to the notes on the book cover, Shawneetown is the oldest town in the state of Illinois and is a “little-known historic jewel.” The author, William Hayes, has explored its (Shawneetown) tragic history and the culture of the ‘50s in this fun, and often moving, account of a principled and resolute young man coming of age while wrestling with some terrifying situations. The reader will catch themselves wishing that the youth of today would read this and take lessons of the maturity and focus that the main character portrays. The author does capture the probability of the main character ’s need to mature early since his father was an absent figure in his life and his family dynamic. The setting is definitely a simpler time when there was not a fascination with television,

August 13, 2009

the Internet, cell phones, etc., and kids still had chores and a respect for authority. Heading to the local swimming hole was a treat and looking for treasure was entertainment that kept a makebelieve hope alive. The book’s description is: “William Hayes, a lover of history and writing, spent his childhood in the historic old town where this novel takes place. After receiving his Master ’s Degree in Physics

from Northwestern University, he did a lot of writing of another kind as part of the team that put man on the moon, developed the Space Shuttle, and put the International Space Station in orbit. For that work, he received the NASA Public Service Medal. Along with his two sons and four grandchildren, he and his wife Jean make their home in Texas.” “Dreams are Forever” is published by Llumina Press, www.llumina. com. It is available at Amazon.com.

With amazing scenery, cool breezes and plenty to do, Telluride could be a great spot to plan for. www.SummerMountainTravel. com describes the wonderful options that Telluride has to offer, not just during ski season. Never far from its ranching roots, Telluride remains firmly linked to Western tradition. A 75year Olympic heritage and some of the best family programs in the industry all distinguish Telluride as one of the premier resort destinations in the world. Located in northwestern Colorado, ski country meets cowboy country in Telluride, where Stetsons and jeans are the norm. With so many lodging options, Telluride offers a unique Colorado experience. The free gondola provides transportation from 7 a.m. to midnight between Telluride and the European-style Mountain Village, just one of the reasons Telluride is free of long lines for shuttle busses, traffic and even traffic lights. The mid-mountain Village boasts rejuvenating spas and plush lodges. Telluride is home to world-class dining, shopping and nightlife with accommodations located at the base of the mountain. Historic buildings, quaint bakeries and local watering holes blend with five-star restaurants, some of the finest spas in the world, luxury hotels and sophisticated shops. During your Telluride summer vacation enjoy things like hiking, climbing, camping, mountain biking, golf, various tours, kayaking, fly fishing, rafting, motor sports, skateboarding, tennis and more. Surrounded on three sides by the beautiful 13,000-ft. peaks of the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is the festival hub of the Rocky Mountains. Here you can find festivals celebrating everything from technology, hot air balloons or chamber music to jazz, bluegrass, movies or even mushrooms! If there were a summer weekend where Telluride didn’t have something to celebrate, they would have a festival celebrating their lack of something

Travel Travel briefs Historic Boulder Dam Hotel reopens thanks to donor BOULDER CITY, Nev. (AP) — The historic Boulder Dam Hotel has reopened after being shuttered on July 11 due to financial problems, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. An anonymous donor gave $260,000 to help revive the 76-year-old hotel, which also features a restaurant, history museum and art gallery. The hotel has started taking online reservations again. The hotel’s Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum documents the Boulder Canyon Project, which built the dam. Innkeeper Roger Shoaff told the ReviewJournal that the infusion of money would keep the hotel going for about 18 months. He says the hotel board hopes to use some of the money to create a foundation, find donors and secure sponsorships for the hotel.

FAA says it will take years to consider Crater Lake helicopters GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A company wants to fly helicopter tours over Crater Lake National Park, but the Federal Aviation Administration says it will take “several years” to consider the proposal. Managers of the nation’s deepest and clearest lake want to see whether flights will significantly disrupt one of the rarities of

national parks — silence. Park officials also want to make sure that flights do not bother northern spotted owls and peregrine falcons nesting in areas near the lake, said park Superintendent Craig Ackerman. Tour boats on the lake already are regulated for noise. Located at the crest of the Cascade Range in southern Oregon, Crater Lake was formed after a volcanic eruption more than 7,000 years ago. Leading Edge Aviation has applied for permission to fly over the lake 300 times a year with the number of flights per day and times of year depending on demand, said company vice president Travis Warthen. Helicopters would fly from an airport outside the park, he said, and stay at 1,500-feet following Rim Road, which circles the lake. FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the agency has a backlog of 85 national parks where air tour management plans have to be developed since enactment of a law in 2000. In the meantime, Leading Edge has asked for an interim permit, but the FAA and the National Park Service disagree on which agency is responsible for considering the company’s request. Crater Lake is Oregon’s only national park.

magazine. For foodies, the issue offers lobster recipes; for travelers, there are recommendations for places to go hiking around the Pine Tree State. The hikes range from strolling around scenic Monhegan Island to trekking up Mount Katahdin, where the Appalachian Trail terminates. Other suggestions in the magazine include trails on Bigelow Mountain, Douglas Mountain, East Royce Mountain, Isle au Haut, Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Mount Blue, Mount Megunticook, and Old Speck Mountain.

Trip to Bonaire offered for handicapped divers SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) — Bonaire, an island off Venezuela, is well-known as a diving destination, and its fans include the Handicapped Scuba Association, based in California, which is organizing its 25th annual trip there. The Aug. 8-15 trip to the island’s Divi Flamingo Beach Resort costs $1,240 for seven days, including accommodations and six days of boat diving, based on double occupancy. The trip is open to certified dive buddies as well. The Divi has welcomed handicapped scuba divers since 1983 and offers customized dive boats outfitted to accommodate wheel chairs and wheelchair lifts. There are more than 3,000 instructors trained to teach the disabled how to dive, according to the association. The sport is especially appealing to people who have

trouble moving on land but who are easily able to glide through the water with the proper equipment. Details at http://www.hsascuba.com/ (click on travel).

Mobil Travel Guide to become Forbes Travel Guide CHICAGO (AP) — Beginning in October, the Mobil Travel Guide brand will become the Forbes Travel Guide. The change is the result of a new licensing agreement that transfers the brand as of Oct. 1 from ExxonMobil to Forbes Media. Mobil’s four- and five-star awards for hotels, restaurants and spas will become Forbes awards when the annual ratings results are announced in November. Mobil’s guidebooks will also be re l a u n c h e d u n d e r t h e F o r b e s b r a n d . Currently there are 45 books in the series, including 15 regional guides, six city guides and other titles covering national parks, golf, traveling with pets, and wineries. Mobil has offered the ratings since 1958. Forbes specializes in media coverage of business, wealth and luxury lifestyles, so partnering with Mobil’s rating guides “was a natural fit,” said Miguel Forbes, Forbes’ president of television and licensing. He added that the partnership would “expand Forbes’ presence in the consumer travel industry while upholding the credibility” of the ratings system.

Travel Explore the legend of Billy the Kid in N.M. LINCOLN, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Tourism Department has launched a Web site dedicated to Billy the Kid. The site has links to maps and tours in Billy the Kid territory, including a complete six-day itinerary, at http://www.newmexico. org/billythekid/. State Tourism Secretary Michael Cerletti says the site is “a travel experience unlike any other in New Mexico,” where visitors can retrace the steps of the famous young outlaw and the sheriff credited with shooting him. A B i l l y t h e Ki d P a g e a n t i s scheduled to take place during the annual Old Lincoln Days, Aug. 79, in the southern New Mexico community of Lincoln, with performances of “The Last Escape of Billy the Kid.” Places featured on the travel Web site include Silver City, where you’ll find markers noting the sites of Billy the Kid’s boyhood home, one of the foster homes he lived in, and the city jail, which he escaped by shimmying up the chimney. His mother is buried nearby in Memory Lane Cemetery. The outlaw was tried of murder in a courtroom that today is an art gallery and souvenir shop in La Mesilla, and the town’s Gadsden Museum has his jail cell on display. In Lincoln, a circular stone tower still stands where Billy and others ambushed and killed the county sheriff and his deputy. His rifle, chaps and spurs are on display at the Billy the Kid Museum in Fort Sumner.

The Arts Artistic adventures Edison Theatre announces 2009-10 line-up For its 2009-10 season, Washington University’s Edison Theatre will present more than a dozen events by nationally and internationally renowned performing artists. Shows range from provocative dance and multimedia rock opera to funkinfused klezmer (or is that klezmerinfused funk?) and whimsical twists on literary classics. The Edison Theatre OVATIONS Series opens Sept. 25 and 26 with David Dorfman Dance in u n d e rg ro u n d , w h i c h t a k e s a subversive look at 1960s activism. Dorfman, a Washington University alumnus, has emerged as one the most celebrated choreographers of his generation, acclaimed for his exuberant and “delightfully oddball” style. The series continues Oct. 2 and 3 with the theatrical power-pop trio GrooveLily in Sleeping Beauty Wakes, their latest collaboration with Tony Award-winning librettist Rachel Sheinkin. The story — a witty musical theatre take on the timeless Grimm’s fairy tale — finds Beauty, awakening after a 900-year sleep, ensconced in a 21st-century sleepdisorder clinic, far from the land far, far away. Next up, on Nov. 14 and 15, is the rock opera dance piece Remember Me, a recent collaboration between

New York’s acclaimed Parsons Dance Company and East Village Opera Company. Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Roger Rees, a 22-year veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, stops by Nov. 20 with What You Will, a oneman-show combining the Bard’s greatest soliloquies with sidesplitting accounts of the funniest disasters ever perpetrated on the stage. The spring semester begins with the return of ScrapArtsMusic Jan. 23. Fusing world and pop sensibilities, this high-energy “action percussion” ensemble employs kinetic, oneof-a-kind instruments built from recycled and salvaged materials such as sewage pipe and artillery shells. Aquila Theatre Company, the foremost producer of touring classical theatre in the United States, takes the stage with Shakespeare’s As You Like It (Feb. 12) and Henrik Ibsen’s thrilling Enemy of the People (Feb. 13). Next up, on Feb. 19 and 20, is the trailblazing PHILADANCO, a modern dance company rooted in African-American traditions. The troupe is followed Feb. 27 by Abraham Inc., an all-star ensemble fusing funk, jazz, hip-hop and klezmer, which is led by virtuoso c l a r i n e t i s t D a v i d K r a k a u e r, trombonist Fred Wesley and “beat architect” Josh Dolgin, aka Socalled. The OVATIONS season concludes March 26 with the Grammynominated Tiempo Libre, known for their incendiary, joyful performances

23 with Scrap Arts Music and Feb. 20 with PHILADANCO in Rosa, a tribute to civil rights activist Rosa Parks. The ovations for young people series concludes May 8 with CORBIAN Visual Arts and Dance in Darwin, a unique theatrical experience that employs electroluminescent wire to create crayon-like characters and creatures in a heart-warming tale of a young dinosaur who discovers the true

of tibma, an irresistible mix of highvoltage Latin jazz and seductive rhythms. Meanwhile, the popular ovations for young people series, which offers specially priced Saturday matinees for audiences of all ages, opens Jan. 16 with the eclectic clown, juggler, balancing artist and poet Jamie Adkins, whose Circus INcognitus transforms everyday objects into outrageous circus routines. The series continues Jan.

Dining Delights

Julia Child's legacy – beyond the techniques By HOLLY RAMER Associated Press CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — From the timesaving tools and French techniques she loved to a famously dropped dinner, Julia Child left a lasting impression on a generation of cooks. In the forthcoming biographical movie, “Julie & Julia,” Meryl Streep channels America’s first celebrity chef. As the movie opens, chefs and food magazine editors remember the real Child’s vast contributions to American home cooking — a scholarly yet accessible approach to recipes, an enthusiasm for efficiency and above all, a spirited sense of fun. At the most basic level, Child introduced home cooks to their stoves, knives, pots and pans, said chef Jacques Pepin, Child’s longtime friend and collaborator. “We’re in a country where we have to cook very, very fast with the microwave or very, very slow with Crock Pot cooking. Then you have the regular stove that’s lost in the middle,” he said. He said he most remembers Child’s great love for life and the great pleasure she took in cooking as well as eating. “You often see people cook and never taste. For her, it was cook, taste, cook, taste, cook, taste. With a little sip of wine on the side,” he said. Chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse said Child emphasized that cooking was important but need not be serious business. “I think of her sense of humor, her joie de vivre about cooking and really about her interest in g a s t ro n o m y — h e r a c a d e m i c insistence on writing the recipe right,” said Waters. “It was curiosity and exploration and learning all folded together to make food an art. That’s what she did.” And she gave novices the confidence to try, added Art Smith, former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey. He made a whole meal out of blanched asparagus for his first girlfriend after watching Child on TV. “Julia Child was not only an amazing cook but taught America that it could learn to cook,” said Smith. “That spirit continues to this day, and this why we have great cooking shows.” Tina Ujlaki, executive food editor at Food & Wine magazine, said she often thinks of Child when she has kitchen mishaps. “I don’t think, ’What would Julia do?’ I just do what she would do: Keep on going,” she said. “That was a really big part of the Julia liberation. Not only did she teach

August 13, 2009

the techniques ... she said, ’It’s OK. Relax. It doesn’t have to be perfect.” That said, there are certain processes or gadgets that Ujlaki associates with Child. “I can’t cut up a chicken without thinking of her and how lovingly she would cut it up,” she said. And Child did not shy away from modern appliances or tools if they made cooking easier, she said. She put her blender to work on a variety of classic soups and once told Ujlaki that she even used a stand mixer to make mashed potatoes for a crowd instead of the food mill she favored for smaller amounts. “She probably used more gadgets than they used in typical French cooking,” she said. “She was always very quick to embrace anything that made sense, but I don’t think she had silly gadgets or gizmos. She

didn’t like clutter.” Her kitchen tools reflected her utter lack of pretense, said John Willoughby, executive editor of Gourmet magazine. “If something worked well, for example, she really couldn’t care less if it was traditional or not; efficiency in the kitchen was always to be embraced,” he said. The food processor is a perfect example, he said. “When it was first introduced, I remember thinking that I probably should just ignore it, since chopping things by machine rather than by hand couldn’t possibly be right. Then Julia endorsed it, and like hundreds of thousands of other American cooks, that convinced me to give it a try. Think of the millions of hours of chopping that she has saved by her openness to new

Turning Pointe Academy of Dance is proud to celebrate their first anniversary this past June. We are quite proud of what we have been able to accomplish in only a years time. Turning Pointe’s main goal is to provide the highest quality dance education in the metro east area. Our instructors all have their Bachelor or Masters degree in dance and are often asked to teach workshops both regionally and nationally. Turning Pointe also encourages it’s instructors to continue their dance education to keep up with current trends. We are also excited about the addition of our pre-professional student dance company. The dance company is an opportunity for students to experience a taste of what a professional dance career is all about. Another addition to our classes this year is tumbling. Turning Pointe is the only studio in our area that offers such a variety of classes. Meet the owner: Dianna Andrews Gaither received a BFA in dance from Webster University. She was also granted departmental honors upon graduating. Dianna furthered her studies in New York City at The Ailey School, where she extensively studied the Lester Horton technique of modern dance. She has performed with The Ailey School, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Slaughter Project, Atrek Dance Collective, Webster University Dance Ensemble, and other local venues. She has over ten years of teaching experience and is one of the four founding company members of Turn of Change Dance Collective. Dianna is currently on staff at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the dance department. Dining Delights St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foofoo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. El Maguey Mexican Restaurant

August 13, 2009

Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!” Big Daddy’s Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches,

salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Northside Dairy Haven Edwardsville 4 stars This seasonal drive-in has been part of the Edwardsville landscape for nearly 50 years. Still famous for their Charco Burger, they also have an array of other sandwiches and barbecue plate specials. The prices cannot be beat! Fiona’s Family Restaurant Edwardsville 4 stars Specials each day, lots of selections, great breakfast. Service is fast and food is hot. Very friendly environment where you won’t spend

a lot to get a great meal. Bella Milano Edwardsville 4 stars Quickly becoming a legend in Edwardsville, Bella Milano is a favorite for many. Great dining atmosphere and lots of good Italian food and drink. Come hungry with loose fitting clothing. Bull and Bear Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars A sports bar and grill with that offers bar side and dining room seating. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, seafood, pizza, and a kid’s menu make it family friendly, yet a great hangout for friends.
