For The Edge Join the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce on its tenth annual Tour de Coal bicycle ride on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015, at the Benld City Hall-Civic Center, 201 E. Central Ave. in downtown Benld, Ill. The story of the 10th Annual Tour de Coal has several parts this year: The Committee is honoring Joe Magnani, a local resident from the early 1900’s and cyclist in Europe; a portion of each Tour de Coal Ride fee is going to benefit the organization H.E.I.D.I.; and the Tour de Coal is again a ride, not a race, with a choice of 3 lengths which will be in conjunction with the CCCC Fall Festival. The Tour de Coal is for riders of all ages and abilities who have an interest in cycling in the Macoupin County, Ill., area and will allow cyclists to ride in memory of Joe Magnani, who grew up in Mt. Clare right here in Coal Country. Magnani became one of the premier cyclists on the European scene in the 1930 and ‘40s. The ride will be held in conjunction with the 17th Annual Fall Festival held at the Benld City Park, where the bike ride ends. Jim Marcacci, a member of the Tour de Coal Committee which is sponsored by the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce, is trying to bring Joe Magnani his due in his home town area during this year of the 10th anniversary of the Tour de Coal Bike Ride. In the 1930s and ‘40s, Magnani’s heroics were largely ignored in the U.S. because there were few followers of the sport here. Magnani raced professionally for several French and Italian teams from 1935 to 1948. In early 1943, Magnani was captured by the German Gestapo and sent to a concentrations camp in northern France where he nearly starved to death. Magnani was released after the liberation of Paris in 1944 and returned to cycling. In 1948 he came back to Chicago, was in a crash which forced him into retirement, and began a longtime affiliation with Schwinn Bicycle Co. Marcacci reports that Magnani assembled the coveted Paramount track and road racing bicycles and did part time coaching. Even though Magnani was a fixture of Europe’s road races, he never had the opportunity to be in the Tour de France because at that time the teams were organized into national teams and were not sponsored as they are today. At one time, Magnani was close to competing on an international composite team, but another rider bought his place onto the team. Magnani was born in LaSalle, IL, but moved to Mount Clare as a child. His father worked in the coal mines, but as work dried up and the Depression loomed, Magnani, then a teenager, and a sister were sent to live with relatives near the French-Italian border, not an uncommon practice with bigger families, said Marcacci. Magnani visited the Coal Country area into the 1970’s. He died in 1975 at age 63 of Parkinson’s disease. Magnani still has relatives in Mt. Clare and Staunton. Marcacci and the other members of the Tour de Coal Committee believe that this 10th year of the Tour de Coal is a good time to revive the memories of the Joseph Magnani, who won races all over Europe decades before other known breakout American cyclists, such as Davis Phinney and Greg LeMond. This year a portion of each person’s registration fee will go to H.E.I.D.I., Helping Every Individual Develop Independence. H.E.I.D.I.’s Facebook page is found at https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ HEIDI/202802349763460?fref=ts and their web site is: http://www.heidihelps.com/ . A description of H.E.I.D.I. that is found on Facebook is as follows: “ This fund has been established in memory of my daughter Heidi

Brand. She passed away May 26th, 2011. She was a special needs child and was an advocate for the rights of the disabled..This fund will benefit the special needs children of the Gillespie Community School District.” Other proceeds from Tour de Coal are used by the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce which encompasses the communities of Benld, Dorchester, Eagarville, East Gillespie, Gillespie, Mount Clare, Sawyerville and Wilsonville. The Chamber sponsors events such as a free Summer Concert Series, the Fall Festival, and Snack with Santa. In the Tour de Coal Bike Ride, cyclists choose from a 13.6-mile family ride, a midlength 35-mile ride or a metric century (64.8 miles). The terrain is flat to rolling with some hills. There are 6 rest stops throughout the 64-mile route. Registration is from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Benld City Hall-Civic Center on the day of the event. You can save money by registering in advance either by mail or through Active.com. Advance registration is $15 per person and $40 for a family of three

or more people living in the same household. On the day of the ride, the cost is $20 per person and $50 for family of three or more people living in the same household. Now is the best time to preregister. Riders need to have their preregistrations in by Sept. 18 in order to be assured of receing a 10th Anniversary Tour de Coal t-shirt. You can register online through the ride’s Web site, www.coalcountrychamber.com . You also can download a paper registration form at the website or pick one up at St. Louis-, Metro-East- and Springfield, Ill.-area bicycle shops. The Tour de Coal did their first mass start in 2014. There will be a mass start beginning at 7:00 AM for those riding the metric century. If you want to find someone with similar riding skills, this is a good way to find them. It will start at the registration area on Central Avenue (Rt. 138). All other riders will start their ride heading north on Second Street as in the past. The mass start is NOT mandatory for Metric century riders. If you plan to ride the metric century

August 13, 2015

and do not want to start at 7:00 AM that is alright too. Again, it is not mandatory. All riders other than the mass start riders can begin their ride any time prior to the closing of registration. Out-of-town visitors to the Tour de Coal can camp Friday night (Sept. 25) at Benld City Park, which is just 1 block north of the Benld Civic Center. For information about camping, contact Mickey Robinson at (217) 710-5218 or mrer@madisontelco.com. Bananas, bottled water and oatmeal cookies will be available at the registration desk the day of the ride. Late registration will be honored with T-shirts while supplies last. At registration, riders are also given a redeemable ticket for a choice of sandwich and soft drink at the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce food booth at the Fall Festival in the Benld City Park. For more information about the Tour de Coal, contact Coal Country Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mickey Robinson at (217) 710-5218 or mrer@ madisontelco.com.

MoBOT brings back Lantern Festival

The Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to an international

exhibition of 22 lighted works of art from Zigong, China when it debuts “Lantern Festival: Magic Reimagined” in 2015. Following critical acclaim and rave reviews from visitors during the 2012 Festival, the Garden has commissioned new sets crafted from silk and steel to once again offer visitors from around the world the opportunity to see an event rarely staged outside of Asia. Lantern Festival will again be an outdoor, evening display running May 23 to August 23, 2015. “We were overwhelmed with the reaction our 2012 Lantern Festival received and for the last two years have heard from so many people asking if another festival would ever be held,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “At the same time, we have continued our botanical research in China, and feel it is fitting to highlight the growing number of botanical gardens in that country as we celebrate the continued contributions the Missouri Botanical Garden makes in science on a global scale.”

Lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture, dating back thousands of years. Today, lante rn fe s tiv als traditio nally mark the Chinese New Year, when complex and ornate lanterns fill cities. The 22 sets that will be seen during Lantern Festival 2015 will be constructed using traditional materials including silk, wire and porcelain. Each set will include interpretation detailing the design’s tradition, symbolism and meaning. Among the planned sets is “Soaring Dragon Horse,” located in the Garden’s Central Axis, depicting a well-known symbol in Chinese culture, the dragon horse. The dragon horse is considered a spirit of Heaven and Earth and thought to bring good fortune. “Porcelain Stupas Pagoda” will be constructed with more than 300,000 porcelain pieces including plates, bowls, spoons, teacups, ladles and wine cups. It serves as a replica of the Stupas Pagoda b uilt in t he Q ing Dy nas t y in the Manfeilong Village of the Yu n n a n P ro v i n c e . I n k e e p i n g

Sheldon to welcome Iris DeMent

The Sheldon is pleased to announce the return of Iris DeMent, Sunday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Singer/songwriter Iris DeMent returns to The Sheldon, performing music from her new release, The Trackless Woods, an album that sets Russian poet Anna Akhmatova’s words to music. Born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, Iris DeMent grew up immersed in gospel and traditional country music. A late bloomer as an artist - she wrote her first song at the age of 25 her first release, Infamous Angel,

immediately established her as a promising and talented artist. Her follow-up recordings, My Life and The Way I Should, were each nominated for a Grammy. Several of DeMent’s songs have become cultural touchstones including “Let The Mystery Be,” sung as a duet by David Byrne and Natalie Merchant on MTV Unplugged, and “Our Town,” which was played over the farewell scene in the series finale of Northern Exposure. Tickets are $35 orchestra/$30 balcony. Call MetroTix at 314-5341111 or visit TheSheldon.org.

"Southpaw"

If you've ever wondered what might have happened to Job if had a strong left hook, "Southpaw" may be the film for you. The rapid descent of light heavyweight champ Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Antoine Fuqua's boxing drama is of biblical proportions. Not weeks after Hope — rich, happy, successful — has defended his belt and unblemished record, a fatal altercation strips him of his family, his mansion and his career. This being a boxing film, redemption is as much a certainty as a training montage. But Fuqua, an avid boxer himself, has pushed the pugilist parable even further. "Southpaw" is downright Old Testament. As a tale of transformation, "Southpaw" functions two ways. There's the story of Billy Hope striving to build his life back. And then there's the tale of the actor who plays him. The latter packs the bigger punch. Our first real view of Gyllenhaal is of him streaming toward the camera, emerging from a hazy blur a snarling, bloody spit of rage, rampaging across the ring. The shot, in a way, is fitting. Gyllenhaal, as one of the most exciting leading men in Hollywood, is coming into focus, even as he's eluding the frame. His maturation as an intense, all-in shape-shifter has become especially clear of late in films like "Nightcrawler" and "Prisoners." ''Southpaw" is him romping in his new weight class. Much has already been made of Gyllenhaal's bulking up for "Southpaw," and it's indeed impressive. But beyond the startling sight of the actor we once knew a s D o n n i e D a r k o c o v e re d i n m u s c l e s a n d t a t t o o s , Gyllenhaal's performance is most dynamic in his tender, mumbled moments with his wife, Maureen (Rachel McAdams) or daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). Outside of the ring, his Billy Hope sounds like a guy who's been knocked around. RATE: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout and some violence." RUNNING TIME: 119 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Vacation"

The great American family road trip seems, in the 32 years since we first met the Griswolds, as antiquated a concept as ever. Middle class families fly now — device enabled, efficiency obsessed and always aware of the outside world. Families flew in 1983, too, of course. "National Lampoon's Vacation" actually begins with a bit of a debate about air versus ground, but road trips back then, even cross-country ones, weren't so out of the question for a family of four, especially when they had two weeks to do it. There's beauty and humor, probably, in the ways families travel now, but "Vacation," a spiritual and literal continuation of what John Hughes and Harold Ramis imagined three decades ago, isn't interested in the now of it all. Rather, "Vacation" is an over-the-top, often hilarious homage to the original from the earnest and talented writing-directing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. It's also completely divorced from the reality that made the first so perfect. In 2015, Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) is grown and living in the Chicago suburbs with his wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) and sons, James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins). They're middle class in the way that all families are middle class in the movies these days — you wouldn't know it from the house, the clothes, or their choices. Their life looks as genuine as a stock photo. They vacation annually at the same cabin, but Rusty realizes the routine has become a rut. To shake things up he decides to recreate his own childhood trek to Wally World, leading to the introduction of the movie's best long-running joke: The Tartan Prancer. It's too ostentatious with its oddities and elaborate key device featuring cryptic symbols on each button (a rocket ship, a top hat, a muffin, and a swastika, to name a few). But then we see the bizarre vehicle in action, and watching each function come alive is a treat. The moments are crafted with invigorating imagination, care, and perfect goofiness. "Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation"

There's some interesting talk in the cleverly satisfying script of "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" about the element of luck. As in: How much is luck a factor in the success of Ethan Hunt and his IMF cohorts? After all, in the last movie they merely saved us from a nuclear holocaust. Was it talent, work, or dumb luck? Whatever you decide about that, let's be clear about this: When it comes to Tom Cruise and his durability as an action hero, luck has little to do with it. The guy's an action star extraordinaire, and it's not luck or chance but work and smarts and yes, some swashbuckling derring-do that get him there. Whatever you may think of Cruise and his complex off-screen persona, let's give him this: At age 53, he and his Ethan Hunt are, if anything, getting more fun to watch. And they make "Rogue Nation" not merely a serviceable summer flick, but an entertainment well worth your inflated ticket price. Let's give kudos to a few other folks, too, starting with director-writer Christopher McQuarrie, who, like each director in the franchise, puts his own stamp on the proceedings. McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") does this with both a wry script that often makes fun of what's happening, and some seriously entertaining action pieces, including a complicated assassination sequence set in Vienna's glittering opera house during a lavish production of Puccini's "Turandot." (Parents: here's a chance to get some opera into your kids' summer — sort of like hiding the broccoli in the brownie mix.) Also invaluable is returning "MI" vet Simon Pegg as Benji, the wise-cracking (and safe-cracking) computer whiz who provides a crucial dose not only of humor but also of humanity here. Welcome newcomers include Alec Baldwin, as a pompous CIA boss with deliciously dry delivery, and Rebecca Ferguson, making the most and then some of the obligatory female role. Ferguson is — get this — Swedish-born, named Ilsa here, and, yes, shows up in Casablanca, too. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of intense action and violence." RUNNING TIME: 131 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Diary of a Teenage Girl"

In "Diary of a Teenage Girl," a bell-bottomed California 15-year-old girl comes of age in 1970s San Francisco. She documents the transition she's been craving, narrating into a tape recorder her eager plunge into sex and adulthood, and illustrating it in crude cartoons that take after R. Crumb. The awakening of Minnie Goetze (23-year-old Bel Powley) is awkward and brash, enthusiastic and angst-ridden, lewd and tender. And it's gloriously honest. As a film made by women and starring a female protagonist, "Diary of a Teenage Girl" is a bracingly fresh entry in a coming-

August 13, 2015

of-age tradition that has, in the movies, almost always been seen through male eyes. It's an unusually accomplished first film from Marielle Heller, who also wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of Phoebe Gloeckner's 2002 graphic novel. The different perspective is clear from the first shot, in which Heller, in close-up, trails from behind and below the hippy strut of Minnie. She narrates: "I had sex today. Holy s--." Minnie smiles to herself, but her glow momentarily fades when a buxom blonde jogs past her. Such fleeting, contrary emotions of exuberance and selfdoubt pinball throughout "Diary of a Teenage Girl," a movie with a firm grip on how it feels to be a precocious 15-year-old in burning pursuit of self-discovery. She finds much of it within her family's wall-papered, second-floor San Francisco apartment, where she lives with her mom, Charlotte (Kristen Wiig), and little sister, Gretal (Abby Wait). The air is filled with cigarette smoke, California sunlight and the moral muddiness of post-60s, Patty Hearst-era 1976. After a string of men, her mom is "looser now," Minnie says. She vacuums during coke-fueled cleaning binges. Minnie, big-eyed with dark bangs, is told she "exudes sexuality." Her first sexual experience, and one that continues throughout the film, is with her mother's 35-year-old easygoing, beer-drinking boyfriend, Monroe (a striking, naturally charismatic Alexander Skarsgard). What begins with childlike playfulness begets a full-blown affair. The age difference, of course, makes the relationship inappropriate, but "Diary" largely withholds that judgment. Minnie is the one who's choosing her partners and driving her story. After their first time in bed, she asks Monroe to take a polaroid of her, so she can see how she's changed. She deduces she looks different: "probably my aura." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content including dialogue, graphic nudity, drug use, language and drinking involving teens." RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"The Gift"

Nobody likes a bully. Especially a past victim with a long memory. Figuring out who's the bully and who's the victim is part of the mystery in "The Gift," a satisfying directorial debut from writer, producer and star Joel Edgerton. While it doesn't break any new ground, the first feature from new studio STX Entertainment succeeds as the kind of unsettling psychological thriller that could inspire one to double-check the locks on the front door. Simon (Jason Bateman) and wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) just relocated from Chicago to a picture-perfect house in his hometown of Los Angeles, where he has a great new job and an impending promotion. Simon insists his wife not start working right away so they can focus on starting a family. While out shopping, the couple bumps into Simon's old high school classmate, Gordo (Edgerton). Shy and awkward, he re-introduces himself to Simon, who didn't recognize him. They exchange pleasantries and innocuously part ways. Suddenly, a bottle of wine appears on the couple's doorstep, a gift from Gordo, though they hadn't given him their address. Then he pops by unannounced, ostensibly to be helpful. More spontaneous gifts follow — he fills their pond with koi — along with a dinner invitation. To Robyn, Gordo seems lonely. To Simon, he seems delusional. He remembers they called him Weirdo back in high school. When Simon insists they cut ties, Gordo responds with an ominous reference to their shared history, which inspires Robyn to examine what happened between them as teenagers. "Vacation" still a laughing matter By LINIDSEY BAHR Associated Press The great American family road trip seems, in the 32 years since we first met the Griswolds, as antiquated a concept as ever. There's beauty and humor, probably, in the ways families travel now, but "Vacation," a

spiritual and literal continuation of what John Hughes and Harold Ramis imagined three decades ago, isn't interested in the now of it all. But then we see the bizarre vehicle in action, and watching each

function come alive is a treat. The moments are crafted with invigorating imagination, care, and perfect goofiness. It's almost enough to upstage the actors — who are fun to watch, even if they're as broadly drawn as a sitcom family. The Griswolds of '83 seemed like people you might know. These are entertaining caricatures. Still, there is pleasantness to the family dynamic, like when Rusty (a blank situational slate made passable by Helms' wide-eyed charm) attempts, quite sincerely, to get everyone to sing along to Seal's "Kiss from a Rose." It doesn't, however, extend to the revelation of Debbie's "do anything" sorority past, an odd and unsuccessful tangent meant to give Applegate something more physical to do.

Cruise still has the "it" factor By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I was smartly impressed with the fifth “Mission: Impossible” movie, a rousing good time called “Rogue Nation”. It was breezy and brisk, despite a formidable running time that’s easily butt-numbing when you by less capable filmmaking hands to craft sub-par pictures. If this franchise is now the “James Bond” of America – and I think it is – then that makes Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt Bond himself, a thought that fills me with confidence and excitement… and leaves me a little sad for all those couch-jumping, over-compensation jokes I’ve made at his expense over the years. Paramount’s rumored to already be on board for a sixth picture and so am I. A long time ago, when television was almost as small as the sets on

which it was watched, a series called “Mission: Impossible” launched viewers into the world of the IMF, one that was better suited to the high budget productions values of major motion pictures. And then the 1996 threw Tom Cruise and Jon Voigt at us in a plot that was so convoluted that I still can’t claim to have understood or enjoyed it. The sequel didn’t fare much better, other than to give Thandie Newton fans a thrill. “Part III” featured a cool rock-climbing intro, but the only other thing I remember was that Keri Russell was in it. And here’s where the series diverges for me. Just like with “Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire”, things get interesting when the characters grow up and the story turns dark. “Ghost Protocol”, the first IMAX feature to play in Edwardsville, is still a rollicking adventure; I caught it on TV last week.

“Rogue Nation”, though, holds its own against all of those other movies. From watching Cruise hang from the side of a cargo plane – a star nefarious for performing his own stunts – to a great free dive into a water-cooled computer security system, the shows is cram-packed with the types of stunts that play well to the general public, but also that fit seamlessly into a story that is solid enough to incorporate these shocking set pieces into the framework. In addition to bring back a slew of supporting cast favorites (Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Jeremey Renner), “Rogue Nation” also introduces Alec Baldwin as the rival head of the CIA, an administrator that hates IMF more than anything and is uncandidly out for their reputation/funding/blood. He’s all but convinced that Hunt is a scam artist who won’t stop until someone stops him. But Ethan’s

got bigger things on his mind, like The Syndicate, an organization run by Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) that is using formerly disavowed agents from about the globe to create his own network of thuggery aimed at world domination. To help Lane and thwart Hunt (or is it the other way around) is Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a former British agent that plays that catty line between good girl and bad girl so well that we don’t know from one scene to the next on whose side she actually is fighting. And when you throw in Ferguson’s unimpeachably perfect combination of shiny brown hair and icy blue eyes, every audience member will understand the trust issues our villain and hero each face. It’s really Cruise’s show. He’s the star we all come to cheer for and see what impossible shenanigans he’ll overcome for our enjoyment this time

out. I am sorry for all the teasing, Tom. If you throw out your curious history with older, taller women and Scientology and that whole Katie Holmes thing, you’re left with one of the great screen star resumes of the last quarter century. I’ll still cheer when Kaffee gets Jessup to admit the Code Red at the end of “A Few Good Men”. I’ll continue to choke up when Goose goes down at the end of “Top Gun” because it leaves a lump in my throat that only Kenny Loggins’s music will reduce. And I’ll never not come out to see what you give us next. Even if it’s that rumored “Top Gun” sequel that sounds like a terrible idea, Maverick! "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" runs 149 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, and brief partial nudity. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

uncovered. In addition to all of the major battles and campaigns, there are exhibits touching on "The Arsenal of Democracy," "America Needs You," "Propaganda and Censorship" and "The Price of Freedom." You'll see a B-24 Liberator

bomber, a bridge from a cruiser, a door taken from the U.S.S. Arizona and a mock up of the Fat Man atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki just before the end of the war. Personal letters, photographs, mess kits, uniforms and more offset the weapons on display.

Hand-held audio devices provide additional information at the touch of a button, giving visitors a greater understanding of what the men in the Pacific experienced. A museum store, with an extensive collection of books on the war, is on site and windows across the hall allow visitors to look inside

Located in the same town Admiral Chester Nimitz was born in, the museum offers a detailed history of the Pacific War. Set up with an indoor/outdoor arrangement, the museum is divided into the George Bush Gallery, the Admiral Nimitz Museum, the Pacific Combat Zone, Plaza of Presidents, Memorial Courtyard and Japanese Garden of Peace. The George Bush Gallery is the primary draw at the museum, as it contains the war relics and interpretive displays. A brief film sets the stage for your museum visit and the first exhibit hall chronicles those events leading up to Dec. 7, 1941 – the day the Japanese attacked American military bases in Hawaii. The first relic you encounter is a midget submarine used in that attack. It's not so midget up close. From there, you will view virtually every piece of equipment used by American, Japanese and Australian soldiers during the war. No aspect of the Pacific War goes

the midget sub they encountered earlier. Outside, a number of artillery pieces sit on display as does a submarine coning tower. The Combat Zone, which features re-enactments, was closed during our visit, but should reopen for the summer of 2016. A separate gallery inside the museum showcases temporary exhibits. During our visit, Bob Hope and his time spent entertaining American servicemen was featured. The Admiral Nimitz Museum, meanwhile, is located offsite in downtown Fredericksburg. A part of the National Museum of the Pacific War, the building, constructed in the late 1800's, once served as the Nimitz Steamboat Hotel and is where the future admiral grew up. Fredericksburg itself is worthy of a visit. The city's German heritage is obvious and the downtown area's shopping district resembles that of Old St. Charles in terms of what is offered. The National Museum of the Pacific is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors over 65, $10 for those with a military ID (active or retired), $7 for students with an ID and free to children 5 and under. Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge While my dad and I's recent expedition to Kansas City wasn't focused on food, it was my mission to discover the most delectable barbecue I could while I was there. Through the urging of friends, my familiarity through “Man vs. Food” and ravings on the internet, my dream destination was found inside an unlikely place — a gas station. Widely renowned as a barbecue mecca, Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que didn't disappoint. It has reigned supreme in the KC area for a long time. Located inside a gas station at 3002 West 47th Avenue in Kansas City, Kan., Joe's Kansas City Bar-BQue definitely lives up to its hype. Formerly known as Oklahoma Joe's, the original hot spot came in Stillwater, Okla., but with current owners Jeff and Joy Stehney being residents of Kansas City and their partner who ran the Oklahoma joint getting out of the business, it became apparent that KC was the place to be. The first restaurant opened in 1995 in Stillwater, now closed, but later that same year the famous gas station locale was opened. In November of 2014 the name change was officially made, shifting to Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Whatever the name, it didn't matter, this barbecue machine had too much power to be slowed down. It doesn't look like much when you pull up, just an old gas station in a residential area. Parking is pretty atrocious, with cars just grabbing a spot wherever they can. Once you get out of the car and the barbecue smell smacks you in the

14

face, you realize you have found the promised land though. Dad and I were lucky enough to arrive a little before 4:30 p.m. and we were lucky we did. There were still plenty of patrons, but by the time we got our food and sat down, the line was wrapped out the door and well into the parking lot. It was quite ridiculous. As for the food, I went with one of the sandwiches that has made Joe's famous — the Z-Man. The Z-Man consists of beef brisket, smoked provolone cheese and two crispy

On the Edge of the Weekend

onion rings on a toasted kaiser roll. This could go on the Mount Rushmore of sandwiches; it's a classic. The brisket was so tender it practically melted in my mouth and the smoked provolone cheese was a fantastic touch. Throw in the onion rings with their delectable crispiness and sensational taste and this beast fulfills the hungriest of bellies, including mine. But not finished, I had to get a side of smoked chicken gumbo and since I was in Kansas City, I went

August 13, 2015

with a Boulevard Pop-Up Session IPA (local beer) to wash it all down. The gumbo was unbelievably good, too. Fat pieces of chicken and okra packed the thick roux along with a good amount of rice. It supplied the perfect amount of kick to put it over the top also. It was a meal fit for kings, or slightly portly vacationing food connoisseurs. Dad wasn't complaining either. He went with the brisket and ribs combo and ordered a side of potato salad. He raved about the

tenderness of the brisket and ribs and said the potato salad made for a nice companion to his main course. There are plenty of other great choices available. There are classic sandwich choices like pulled pork, smoked turkey, smoked ham and brisket. The “Smokie Joe” consists of smoked beef and pork on a bun after being simmered together in Joe's barbecue sauce. The specialty sandwiches h a v e s o m e p o w e rh o u s e s l i k e the “Carolina Pork Sandwich,” with pulled pork on a toasted bun topped with spicy cole slaw and Bubba's sauce. The “Pulled Chicken Breast Sandwich” sounds scrumptious too, comprised of smoked chicken breast, barbecue mayo, lettuce and a tomato jam. You can also order combo meals with all the delicious meats. Sides include red beans and rice, barbecue beans, spicy cole slaw, creamy cole slaw, dirty rice and the potato salad. Carry out and catering are available, too, so you can order in bulk. A second location can by found in Olathe, Kan. It opened in 2005. TV food critic Anthony Bourdain said in 2009 that Joe's was one of the “Thirteen places to eat before you die.” It definitely jumps to the top of my “You Gotta Eat” all-star list of restaurants. You can learn more about Joe's on their webiste, www.joeskc. com. If you make it to the KC area, make sure Joe's is on the to-do list while you're there, it's definitely a destination place when you gotta eat.

Dining Delights The Ege's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. J. Gumbo’s 3949 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis Central West End This is a chain restaurant, but it doesn’t feel that way. Check out the St. Louis location at 3949 Lindell Blvd. to get some really good Cajun and Creole food quick and cheap. Make sure to check out the crawfish etoufeé. The menu does a really good job of informing you of spiciness levels. Joanie’s Pizzeria 2101 Menard St., St. Louis Soulard A stable in the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis, this is a spot that offers great pizza and Italian dishes along with great drink specials and entertainment. Visit prior to a Cardinals game or other various events in St. Louis, eat dinner, and ride the free shuttle to and from the event. Los Tres Amigos 1011 Century Dr. Edwardsville T h e J o s e M o r a l e s Ta c o i s the highlight of this Mexican Restaurant. The deep fried goodness of the taco is topped off with Parmesan cheese to give it that special flavor. Check out the rest of the extensive menu for other great Mexican dishes, too. Wang Gang Asian Eats 1035 Century Dr. Edwardsville This is a hip, fun spot if you’re into Asian cuisine. It’s an Asian fusion restaurant that puts unique spins on classic Asian dishes. Brickhouse Tavern & Tap 2 McBride and Son Center Dr. Chesterfield This is a great place to take a date or have a good time with a group of friends. Fun and creative menu and huge line of beers on tap and in bottles. Enjoy your meal sitting on a couch in front of a fire. The real allstar here are the bacon and jalapenó deviled eggs on the appetizer menu. The LuBar & Bistro 911 Fairfax St. Carlyle Pretty cool place to chill out and have a good dinner. The dining area is separated from the bar, as this establishment is split into two levels. The LuBar nachos are arguably the best nachos I’ve ever had and the pulled pork sandwich is a winner. Check out the full breakfast menu also and don’t forget to order some ice cream from the ice cream bar before you leave. Fazzi’s Bar and Restaurant 1813 Vandalia St. Collinsville Opa! You’ll probably hear this a few times here as patrons order the signature appetizer dish, Saganaki, consisting of breaded goat cheese which is doused in oil and set on fire. This Greek and Italian restaurant is very affordable and has some great choices, including the

Mousaka. The gyro plate isn’t bad either. Roma’s Pizza 121 E. Bethalto Dr. Bethalto This is a treasure in Bethalto. Fantastic pizza, some of the best in the metropolitan area. Always packed so be prepared to wait, but it’s worth it. Make sure to check out the bosco sticks also. Mini Corral Hamburgers 1500 Main St. Alton Small shack that serves great mini burgers, French fries and onion things. Nothing special on aesthetics, get your food in a greasy white box but its been a staple in Alton for a long time. King Louie’s Drive-In S. 6th St. Wood River This is an old-style drive-in restaurant where you can still order your meal from you car. Great burgers and fries and make sure to check out the fried cauliflower. Their root beer soda is also fantastic. There is also a dining area where you can go inside.

1530 E. 4th St. Alton Check out the cheapest food around in a fun atmosphere. Order a Fat Eddie Burger or a Big Elwood and make sure to scarf down some peel and eat shrimp, all for under $10. Also includes great live entertainment and plenty of drinks. I warn you, it does get a little packed. Sunday afternoons are great, a little less of a crowd and usually a pretty good band. LaFonda Mexican Restaurant 2310 Troy Rd. Edwardsville Be prepared to get your food quick and delicious. There is a huge menu to pick from. The fajitas and chimichangas are great. It also offers a good build-yourown portion of the menu and nothing will hurt your pocket book

too bad either.

Mazzio’s Italian Eatery 2683 Northern Way Highland Good pizza and has a nice salad bar and buffet. It’s a great place to take the family for nice dinner out. If you don’t want pizza, it also offers pasta dishes and sandwiches. The mini meatball bake and the greek pasta are good choices.

S&S Sandwich Shop 2505 State St. Alton If you’re in the mood for a good, independently owned deli shop, then this is the spot. Delicious and fresh, they offer a creative line of sandwiches, along with soup selections.

The Pump House Bar & Grill 1523 E. Edwardsville Rd. Wood River This is a cool place to go get a bite to eat or check out live entertainment and grab some drinks. It gets a little creative for bar food and a little expensive, but it’s good. The beef brisket sandwich and the pulled pork are both good. They also have some good craft beers

Chava’s Mexican Restaurant 217 E. Vandalia St. Edwardsville A good place to go for a highquality Mexican meal. Check out the Jenas on the appetizer menu, j a l a p e n ó h a l v e s s t u ff e d w i t h Mexican charizo (sausage) and white queso cheese. The “build a burrito” portion of the meun is fun, too.

Bigelo’s Bistro 140 N. Main St. Edwardsville It has classic sandwiches and a cool atmosphere to have lunch or chill out with some friends. It can get a little pricey for what it is, but it’s well worth it. Make sure to check out the Pigggelo and the Chicken Guy for a couple of great sandwiches. Cleveland-Heath 106 N. Main St. Edwardsville Great place for a dinner date, intimate seating and the eclectic menu is amazing. Expect a wait, it gets busy. Plenty of unique creations to choose from, but make sure to check out the awesome sweet potato fries. A must to try here is the beignets off of the dessert menu. They practically melt in your mouth. The Arts Artistic adventures Storied St. Louis Artists’ Guild celebrates new location

Earlier this summer, the St. Louis Artists’ Guild moved to a new location in Clayton, boasting over 5,500 square feet of gallery space. The Artists’ Guild focuses on displaying regional artists and educating anyone about art who expresses an interest. Currently in its 129th year of operation, the Artists’ Guild is preparing to move into its fourth permanent location. The Artists’ Guild moved out of its 20 year home in Oak Knoll Park to the new location off North Jackson Avenue, where it believes it can further its mission to share art with everyone. "It has always been the mission of this organization to present artists' work,” said Kathryn Nahorski, Executive Director of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. “Exhibition is at its core, and we want to make sure that we are doing the very best for our regional and national artists." One such regional artist recently displayed at the new location is Keith Baizer, an artist based in St. Louis. Though he spends most of his time as owner of St. Louis’ Artmart, Baizer relishes the opportunity to see his own creativity come to life at the Artists’ Guild. “Our city is truly fortunate to have an organization as historic and well-established as the St. Louis Artists’ Guild,” Baizer remarked. “To add my work to the myriad of artists who have already come through these halls is an exciting moment, and I know the Artists’ Guild will continue to attract highly skilled artists in their next chapter.” Artmart has partnered with the Artists’ Guild for over 60 years by supporting shows, events, and programming, including their endowment for children’s art events. The St. Louis Artists’ Guild was founded in 1886 for people who love art. Today, it boasts almost 700 members committed to their mission statement: “To be a resource and advocate for creative expression, serving the Midwest as a center that exhibits, supports, and promotes the visual arts.” The St. Louis Artists’ Guild is now located at 12 North Jackson Avenue. The gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, call (314) 727-6266. Artmart is located on 2355 South Hanley Road. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information on Artmart, please call (314) 3674527.

Religion Religion briefs GOP hopeful Dr. Ben Carson blasts Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dr. Ben Carson has urged people of faith to stand up against what he calls the "blatant evil" of Planned Parenthood. The Republican presidential hopeful addressed a rally outside the U.S. Capitol yesterday as an anti-abortion group released a third undercover video of Planned Parenthood officials discussing the provision of organs from aborted fetuses for research. The organization says the videos are heavily edited. Carson told abortion opponents he had spent many nights as a surgeon "toiling so hard to save one of those lives." Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, who also are seeking the GOP nomination, said Congress should cut off the hundreds of millions of dollars it gives Planned Parenthood. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office says he's working "to address this horrific issue with the goal of taking a

vote" before Congress's August recess.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The Massachusetts Marine who was killed a by a gunman in Tennessee this month has been remembered by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Springfield as "exemplary" and "a leader and a man of true courage." Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan was one of five service members killed by a Muslim gunman in Chattanooga on July 16. The gunman was killed by police. Bishop Michael Rozanski said the 40-year-old Sullivan's "love for his family, his selfless dedication to being a Marine and his solid faith in God" helped him face deployments in Iraq and the fatal attack on July 16. Monday's funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church — the church Sullivan attended as a child — was attended by family, friends,

Air Force base near Clovis accused of religious favoritism

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — Officials at an Air Force base in New Mexico are denying claims that they improperly promoted an upcoming religious event. The Clovis News Journal reports that emails about an Aug. 15 Gospel Explosion event planned for the Cannon Air Force Base chapel said "please post everywhere and spread the word." The Military Religious Freedom Foundation says a master sergeant and first lieutenants sent emails to seven people who later contacted the organization. In a news release Thursday the group said the emails could be construed as supporting or endorsing religion.
