Take a flight into history World War II bomber flying into Spirit of St. Louis Airport By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge For flight lovers everywhere there’s a great opportunity to experience a piece of history on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 21 and Aug. 22. The Liberty Foundation’s B-17 “Flying Fortress” will be at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, Mo., as part of the 2010 salute to veterans tour. The “Liberty Belle” is one of only 14 B-17’s that still fly today. The B-17, dubbed the “Flying F o r t re s s ” a s a re s u l t o f h e r defensive fire power, saw action in every theater of operation during World War II. The majority of all Word War II B-17’s were operated by the 8th Airforce in Europe and participated in countless missions from bases in England deep into enemy territory. There were 12,732 B-17’s produced between 1935 and 1945. Of these, 4,735 were lost in combat. Following World War II, the B-17 saw combat in three more wars, B-17’s saw service in Korea, Isreal used them in the war in 1948 and was even used during Vietnam. “Liberty Belle” was built toward the end of the war and never saw any combat. It is painted in the colors and nose art of the original “Liberty Belle” B-17 that flew countless missions with the 390th bomb group of the mighty 8th Air Force. The Liberty Foundation’s B-17G had an interesting post war history. Sold scrap in 1947 to a mining

Above, the Liberty Bell B-17 bomber. Below, the bombardier’s position inside the plane. company, in short order it was sold again to Pratt & Whitney for the sum of $2,700.00. Pratt & Whitney operated the B-17 until 1967, in which it was heavily modified test bed for their T-34 & T-64 turbo prop engines thus making it a five engine B-17. In 1968 the B-17 was then donated to the Connecticut Aeronautical Historic society. Unfortunately, in 1979 the B-17 was heavily damaged in a tornado that threw another airplane onto the B-17’s mid-section breaking her back. The wreck was stored until 1987 when acquired by an aviation enthusiast in Florida with the intent to restore the aircraft.
In 1992 the slow laborious task of restoration began and with the turn of the century saw the B-17 sold again to Don Brooks of the Liberty Foundation. Mr. Brooks, whose father flew B-17s with the 390th bomb group during WWII, founded the Liberty Foundation; a non profit museum dedicated to preserving our aviation heritage, and funded the complete restoration of the B-17 back to her full wartime configuration as she appears today. He chose to paint the B-17 as the ‘Liberty Belle” as a tribute to his father who was a tail gunner and flew numerous combat missions in the original “Liberty Belle,” and all the brave aircrew of WWII. The B-17, following a 14 year restoration, took to the skies again after 38 years on Dec. 8, 2004. The “Liberty Belle” provides visitors the opportunity to take a step back in time and gain respect for the men and women who gave so much to protect our freedoms. At each stop, flight “missions” are available in the airplane, which allow people to take flights in this historic aircraft. During flight operations, there will be a designated, secure area for those who would like to watch the bomber flight at no charge. For enthusiasts that choose to take a
flight experience on this legendary aircraft, these participants receive a pre-flight safety briefing containing the historical significance of the aircraft and a spectacular scenic air tour around the city. During the flight, passengers enjoy the unique opportunity of moving about the aircraft to the different combat crew positions to see the viewpoint that thousands of our heroes saw in combat over 60 years ago. World War II was the single greatest challenge to freedom in the 20th Century. Through the 46 months of war, more than 300,000 American soldiers, sailors and aviators died defending the beliefs that they held dear, with many more sacrificing in other ways. These men became our heroes through their struggles and came home to a grateful nation. Over the half century since, those heroes became our husbands, uncles, fathers and grandfathers; in many cases their stories were never shared with their families. Now with the popularity of movies like “Pearl Harbor” and the Steven Ambrose book “The Wild Blue,” families are seeking to learn more about our veterans. They realize that these stories of courage and valor need to be preserved for future generations. Estimates place the number of
World War II veterans dying each day at over 1,500. With each death, another story of courage, honor and sacrifice is lost forever. This aircraft represents that legacy of courage and valor. The total flight experience takes 45 minutes with approximately half hour in flight. Flights experiences are $395 for Liberty Foundation members and $430 for non-members. Passengers can become a Liberty Foundation Member for $40 and receive the member discount for family and friends. While $430 per person sounds expensive, it must be put into perspective when compared to a B-17’s operating cost. A Flying Fortress cost more than $4,500 per flight hour and the Liberty Foundation spends over $1 million annually to keep the\ ”Liberty Bellez’ airworthy and out on tour. The Liberty Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit flying museum and funds generated merely help offset these high costs. Only the public’s interest and other generous donations keep the “Liberty Belle” flying and from being silenced permanently in a museum for years to come. For more information about The Liberty Foundation or the “Liberty Belle” visit www.libertyfoundation. org.

John Mellencamp American storyteller to perform at The Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge John Mellencamp has made some transitions over his career. Starting out as John Cougar, he returned to his roots as he changed his name to John Cougar Mellancamp, and after realizing that he wanted all along to be in touch with reality and not show-biz, he dropped the stage name “Cougar” and now is back to his birth name, John Mellencamp. Known as one of the most downto-earth, nice guys of rock music, Mellancamp has been able to sell records and concert seats for over three decades. Writing songs about real life and the working folks, Mellancamp’s music has remained a favorite across generations. Mellencamp and his band are set to embark on the first leg of the “No Better Than This Tour” in late October following the Aug. 17 release of his Rounder Records debut album, “No Better Than This.” The tour, designed as a uniquely formatted “evening with,” brings Mellencamp’s music to theater-sized venues, a rare opportunity to experience one of America’s most iconic songwriters and performers in an intimate setting, highlighting all phases of his artistry. The tour, anticipated to continue through the spring of 2011, will kick off on Oct. 29, in Bloomington, I n d . , w h e re M e l l e n c a m p a n d his family make their home. Fame inductee over the course of his 35-year career as well as the new music from “No Better Than This.” The new album was produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded in three historic locations in the American South: Savannah’s First African Baptist Church, Sun Studio in Memphis and Room 414 of San Antonio’s Gunter Hotel where Robert Johnson recorded in 1936. The sessions were documented o n a 5 5 - y e a r- o l d m o n o t a p e recorder using just one vintage m i c ro p h o n e a t e a c h l o c a t i o n . Rolling Stone’s review of the album noted, “Mellencamp has never sounded looser or easier on a record,” suggesting the artist was “channeling spirits and stepping into period styles. They fit him perfectly.” As a reflection of the diversity of styles and material that have been a hallmark of Mellencamp’s eclectic career, the concerts are formatted into three segments. These showcase John Mellencamp in an acoustic context, fronting a small combo recalling blues/country
and rockabilly roots and with his full rock band. Musicians backing Mellencamp include Michael Wanchic (guitar), Andy York (guitar), Miriam Sturm (violin), John Gunnell (electric and upright bass), Dane Clark (drums) and Troye Kinnett (accordion/keyboards). Of special note is the fact that the tour ’s “opening act,” is a documentary film by Kurt Markus entitled “It’s About You.” Shot on Super 8 film over the course of last year’s Bob Dylan-John MellencampWillie Nelson tour of minor league baseball stadiums, it chronicles the creation of “No Better Than This” while serving as a cinematic ‘think piece’ on the state of the country at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century. Markus, whose still work has put him in the front ranks of contemporary American photographers, has been cited for his extraordinary vision of his work documenting the American West and is the recipient of Life Magazine’s Alfred Eisenstaedt Photography Award. Ticket holders are urged to get to their respective “No Better Than This Tour” venues in advance of the film’s 6:45 p.m. start time. Mellencamp noted, “I’m very excited to have the opportunity at this time in my life to go on tour and present these songs in this manner.” Fans should to log on to www. mellencamp.com for the most up-to-date concert and ticket sale information. Mellencamp will be at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 6, with tickets on sale now. Cost: $42.50 - $92.50. A limited number of Gold Circle seats are also available. Limit of six tickets per transaction. Tickets available through the Fox Theatre Box Office, MetroTix.com, aeglive.com, and Charge-by-phone 314-534-1111. Produced by AEG Live.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Inception”
We’re happy to report, with great relief, that all the hype is justified. Writer-director Christopher Nolan’s first film since “The Dark Knight” is a stunningly gorgeous, technically flawless symphony of images and ideas. “Memento,” the mystery-in-reverse that put Nolan on the map a decade ago, looks almost quaint by comparison. In its sheer enormity, it’s every inch a blockbuster, but in the good sense of the word: with awesomeness, ambition and scope. The cinematography, production design, effects, editing, score, everything down the line — all superb. But unlike so many summer movies assigned that tag, “Inception” is no mindless thrill ride. It’ll make you work, but that’s part of what’s so thrilling about it. With its complicated concepts about dreams within dreams, layers of consciousness and methods of manipulation, “Inception” might make you want to stop a few times just to get your bearings. The juggernaut of Nolan’s storytelling momentum, however, keeps pounding away. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as dream thief Dom Cobb, an “extractor” who enters the mind while a person is dreaming to steal their secrets; Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays his detail-oriented right-hand man. Ken Watanabe, as the powerful businessman Saito, hires Dom and his team for a different kind of crime: sneak into the subconscious of a competitor (Cillian Murphy) and implant an idea that will ruin his empire. Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and Dileep Rao are all excellent as members of Dom’s crew. One of the year’s best films, and it’ll surely get even better upon repeated viewings. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout. RUNNING TIME: 147 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
“Cairo Time”
Writer-director Ruba Nadda’s fourth film seeks poetry and comes up short. Shot on location in Egypt, it has the exotic setting. With Patricia Clarkson as a visiting wife left alone by her waylaid husband, and Alexander Siddig as her host and companion, it has the roles. But the slow pace and elegant mood of “Cairo Time” fails to summon any magic, and this film — a kind of Middle East version of “Lost in Translation” — passes with merely a picturesque tick-tock. A deeper relationship gradually forms between the visitor and native, and a question of how far they’ll take it becomes the film’s muted drama. But Clarkson and Siddig’s lack of
August 19, 2010
chemistry and Nadda’s flat script keep things languid and unemotional. Nadda and cinematographer Luc Montpellier succeed in fashioning a graceful postcard to the city, but a story, too, would have been nice. RATED: PG for mild thematic elements and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 89 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Disappearance of Alice Creed”
There’s so much to say here, so much to pore over and praise. Trouble is, the less you know about this movie heading into it, the better. So ... what can we say about it, then? Well, it’s one you should definitely see: a small, intelligent thriller you’ll be glad you went out of your way to find, especially during the summer when so much is so mindless. It’s so deftly handled, so sharp and clever, you’d never know it’s the first feature from British writer-director J Blakeson. A tense, twisting tale about the kidnapping of a wealthy man’s daughter, “Alice Creed” keeps you on your toes as secrets are revealed and allegiances shift. With its three characters in a cramped space, it has the claustrophobic feel of watching a play on film. Yet there’s also a dry sense of humor that surfaces sporadically and keeps it from being completely suffocating. But perhaps we’ve already said too much ... Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston are great as the kidnappers whose power dynamic is constantly shifting, with Gemma Arterton as their feisty target. RATED: R for violent content, pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Middle Men”
You’ll probably want to take a shower after watching this, just to wash all the “ick” off yourself. And that’s a compliment. Inspired-by-a-true-story film about the birth of Internet porn, it’s giddily sleazy, full of convincing crazies and criminals, as well as the scumbags and wannabes who surround them. Writer-director George Gallo seems to have been influenced by “Boogie Nights” and “Goodfellas,” not just in their subject matter but in their fast-paced, in-
your-face hodgepodge of images, styles and music. It’s a predictable rise-and-fall tale, but at least it’s fun while it lasts. Besides, the details and the characters are what make these types of movies work. Giovanni Ribisi is gloriously over-the-top as a former veterinarian who helps come up with the idea of distributing porn online in the late 1990s when he becomes bored with his own, um, inspirational material. The real brains behind the operation is a former NASA technician (Gabriel Macht) who creates a program within minutes that allows users to provide their credit card information and receive photos and videos in return. But Luke Wilson is at the center of it all as the Texan with a knack for problem solving who helps legitimize their business RATED: R for strong sexual content, nudity, language, drug use and violence. RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“The Other Guys”
If the mismatched-buddy cop movie seems egregiously overdone, the idea of a parody of that genre would seem especially needless — which is what makes this such a wonderful surprise. On paper, this could have been painfully lame. Will Ferrell is doing a variation on his triedand-true film persona: the overly earnest guy who’s totally confident and oblivious to his buffoonery. Mark Wahlberg, meanwhile, is playing with his screen image as a tough guy and a hothead, doing a version of his Oscar-nominated role in “The Departed.” It all could have been too familiar, too cute. But there are just enough tweaks to these characters and this formula — and a refreshingly weird, kinky streak throughout — that make “The Other Guys” an unexpected kick. Director and co-writer Adam McKay’s film runs out of steam in the third act and probably could have been tightened a bit. And we didn’t need the Powerpoint-style presentation over the closing credits preaching to us about corporate greed. But the majority of it works. A big reason for the film’s success is that the action sequences are played totally straight. The comedy similarly has a deadpan tone; it’s self-aware but not tongue-in-cheek. RATED: PG-13 for crude and sexual content, language, violence and some drug material. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Movies “Alice Creed” a taut, twisted thriller By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press There’s so much to say about “The Disappearance of Alice Creed,” so much to pore over and praise. Trouble is, the less you know about this movie heading into it, the better. So ... what can we say about it, then? We l l , i t ’ s o n e y o u s h o u l d definitely see: a small, intelligent thriller you’ll be glad you went out of your way to find, especially during the summer when so much is so mindless. With its three characters in a cramped space, it has the claustrophobic feel of watching a play on film. Yet there’s also a dry sense of humor that surfaces sporadically and keeps it from being completely suffocating. But perhaps we’ve already said too much ... Anyway, “Alice Creed” sucks you in immediately with a beautifully edited opening sequence. The whole film moves really well, but off the top it’s especially fluid, as two guys wordlessly go to a hardware store to pick up supplies. Then they quickly and efficiently outfit a shabby, one-bedroom apartment with soundproofing and extra locks and line the inside of a nondescript white minivan with plastic sheeting. One of them says to the other, “OK,” and that’s it. Then they’re off to steal away with the young woman.

In this publicity photo provided by Anchor Bay Films, actor Martin Compston, left, plays the role of Danny and actor Eddie Marsan plays the role of Vic in the film, “The Disappearance of Alice Creed”. We learn later that their names are Vic (Eddie Marsan) and Danny (Martin Compston). Their target, Alice (Gemma Arterton), is the daughter of a rich businessman. Once inside the apartment, they strip her down and place her in different clothes, tie her spread-
eagle to a bed, then place a ball gag in her mouth and a pillowcase over her head. (And if there is a complaint to be had here, it’s that the film has a slightly skeevy, exploitative vibe to it.) And from there, Vic and Danny’s scheme to make $2 million off
Alice’s father doesn’t exactly go as planned. I t n e v e r d o e s , r i g h t ? We know this going in and yet it’s impossible not to be engaged, to hang on every word, wondering who’s going to do what to whom next. “Alice Creed” feels almost
quaint in its minimalism: It’s all about story and character and pacing. These guys thought they’d picked the perfect mark to make some easy money. Boy, were they wrong. But that’s all we’ll say about that.
Bizarre twists sink “The Other Guys” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Will Ferrell is great at comedy. He’s not necessarily a comedian, and his skills aren’t really what I would call impressive acting, but he’s great at a hybrid of the two. When I think of his past work I see a colorful flash of genius: a Spartan cheerleader on SNL, a mysterious and perfect cameo in Wedding Crashers, proclamations of genius aimed at Baxter the dog in Anchorman, and the Pepsi-swilling exemplification of American consumerism in Talladega Nights. When you add the great things that have come out of FunnyorDie, a website he co-created, this is more than enough to create a lasting legacy of greatness. His role in The Other Guys attempts to be a further reinvention, but peters out into the same old Will Ferrell we’ve seen a dozen other times (like in that dreadful mess called Semi-Pro). Allen Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz
August 19, 2010
(Mark Wahlberg, whose intensity I’ve always liked) are “the other guys”. They’re the cops that work the desk, make the calls, write the reports, and get none of the credit that goes to “the guys”, cops like NYC’s favorite buddy duo Danson (Samuel L. Jackson) and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson). They don’t see the glamour in a gunfight. They can’t seem to get promoted, especially after Terry’s accidental shooting of Derek Jeter ruins the Yankees’ chances in the playoffs. Even the other desk cops (Rob Riggle, Damon Wayans, Jr.) ride them for being lame because, you see, Allen is really an accountant hired by the police to investigate corruption by following the money. He doesn’t even carry a real gun. When Danson and Highsmith are taken out of the picture, Terry sees it as a great opportunity to flex their cop muscles and take down a scumbag or two. On Allen’s tip, they aim to take down a corporate baddie (Steve Coogan) who distracts them
with shiny faux cooperation in the form of “Jersey Boys” tickets and a series of “Who, Me?” facial expressions. The Other Guys is fairly serious for a comedy, especially one starring Ferrell, but all that changes about halfway through when some of Allen’s backstory starts to flesh out. We learn that he was, essentially, a pimp in college. He operated mercilessly under the guise of “Gator”, a mad man you wouldn’t want to cross. The persona takes over in the modern day from this point forward and everything that happens after the chang is colored almost negatively by it. Other, equally bizarre story elements round out a running length that is unnecessary. Eva Mendes stars as Allen’s wife, a woman who is stunningly beautiful in the eye’s of everyone she meets except her hubby. Director/screenwriter Adam McKay cameos as a street person involved in some unwholesome antics that shouldn’t be described here. I would
have enjoyed more of Derek Jeter. The premise for his involvement was hilarious and the guy can do more than just play shortstop. I would recommend another movie in place of this one, but the week’s other new offering, Step Up 3, doesn’t really have much to offer, even in 3D locations, besides more complicated dancing that allegedly makes it “urban”. I can’t even remember the names of the actors. I am optimistic, though, for next week’s o ff e r i n g s o f E a t P r a y L o v e , s t a r r i n g Julia Roberts, and Sylvester Stallone’s long-awaited Action Guy Fest 2010, The Expendables. Time will tell. Summer is almost over and that means the best movie season of the year is about to start. ••• The Other Guys runs 119 minutes and is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, language, violence, and some drug content. I give this film one star out of four.

“Scott Pilgrim” offers high-energy mix By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press This is going to sound like blasphemy — especially to the film’s target audience — but here goes: “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is way more involving when it focuses on actual people and the palpable angst of young love rather than the video game-style duels to the death in which the title character finds himself. T h e re . G o a h e a d a n d s e n d n a s t y e mails. But it’s true. Director and co-writer Edgar Wright certainly creates an infectious energy in bringing Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels to the screen, with wonderfully weird little details sprinkled throughout. N o s u r p r i s e t h e r e , g i v e n Wr i g h t ’ s previous films — the excellent “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” — which reveled in the deliriously absurd elements of everyday life. But it’s those kinds of relatable factors — and some lively performances from an appealing, eclectic cast — that make the movie work. The video game flourishes grab you
the first couple times: the point totals that accumulate on screen during b a t t l e s , t h e t i n y, p i n k h e a r t s t h a t explode from the mouths of a couple’s first kiss, the way in which Scott’s enemies collapse into a pile of coins once he’s vanquished them. Often the action is split in a way that suggests the panels of a comic book coming to life, or words like “Ding Dong!” and “Blam!” appear on screen. It’s the ultimate geek mash-up. These devices grow repetitive and tiresome, though, especially once you realize that Scott really is going to have to fight every one of his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes — the arbitrary task that’s placed before him. (Thankfully, he takes on a set of twins simultaneously.) Scott doesn’t have all that much going for him anyway that would make him a natural fighter; the fact that he’s played by Michael Cera pretty much tells y o u a l l y o u n e e d t o k n o w. J u s t w h e n you thought Cera might have more c h a r a c t e r s t o o ff e r o n s c re e n b e y o n d the sweet, smart, hoodie-clad underdog . . . w e l l , a p p a re n t l y h e d o e s n ’ t . F ro m “Arrested Development” to “Superbad” to “Youth in Revolt,” he’s got that guy
down pat. The schtick has long since grown old but, in this case, at least it makes sense. S p e a k i n g o f a r re s t e d d e v e l o p m e n t , that’s Scott’s perpetual state. He’s 22 and plays bass in a garage band with his friends (Mark Webber, Johnny Simmons and a hilariously surly Alison Pill on drums). He lives in a shabby studio and shares a mattress on the floor with his gay best friend (Kieran Culkin). And he’s dating a worshipful high schooler named Knives Chau (a charmingly pathetic Ellen Wong), with whom he peruses the many record shops and thrift stores of Toronto. But when he meets the saucy and mysterious Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a delivery girl with ever-changing hair colors, he’s instantly smitten. Just as quickly, though, he finds he must defeat her seven evil exes to win her heart. As played by Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman and Chris Evans, among others, they’re a bizarre crosssection of humanity, and the animated flashbacks explaining how Ramona ended up with each of them are brief
and amusing. (If nothing else, Wright makes “Scott Pilgrim” move with consistent fluidity. Michael Bacall cowrote the snappy script.) Trouble is, Scott is never as interesting as the various freaks who surround him, both friends and foes. There’s a ton of great roles for strong young actresses here; besides Pill and Winstead, Anna Kendrick is engagingly sharp as always as Scott’s younger s i s t e r, a n d B r i e L a r s o n s t a n d s o u t a s t h e e x w h o b ro k e h i s h e a r t e n ro u t e to becoming a rock star. Culkin steals e v e r y s c e n e h e ’ s i n , a n d h i s p re s e n c e alone is enough to make you wonder how much better “Scott Pilgrim” might have been with a central figure who had a little more personality. Sure, Scott is s u p p o s e d t o b e a n e rd , b u t h e d i d n ’ t have to be boring. Nevertheless, the dialogue and the music keep you engaged, at least while the movie lasts. "Expendables" expected to hit the jackpot LOS ANGELES (AP) — Looks like Friday the 13th will bring good luck to the movie industry as Lionsgate’s “The Expendables” wreaks weekend havoc with an expected gross in the $30 million-plus range. Directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, this new arrival takes the notion of star power to a whole new level by enlisting a veritable who’s who of the action world, including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin. By flexing its considerable muscle, “The Expendables” looks to dispatch all comers in this
weekend’s box office smackdown. The second spot will likely be filled by the softer, gentler “Eat Pray Love,” Sony’s highly anticipated, big-screen version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling novel, starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem. The film will likely gross in the $20 million range, but should also generate solid word-of-mouth and respectable returns over the long haul. With exotic locations, noteworthy performances and a very “un-Expendable”-style sensitivity, women will be lining
up to follow this romantic journey of enlightenment that features one of the biggest female stars in the world. In the battle for third place, it should be “Scott Pilgrim” vs. “The Other Guys,” with grosses in the $15 million to $17 million range. Unique and visually stunning, Universal’s debuting “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” starring Michael Cera will attempt to wrestle the young male demographic away from Sony’s “The Other Guys,” last weekend’s No. 1 film, but not without a major
challenge from stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. O f c o u r s e , Wa r n e r B r o s . ’ “Inception” will continue to be a factor in the top-five derby with yet another impressively small drop in the mid to high 30 percent range that will likely land it in fifth place with a gross of more than $10 million. A major box office milestone is also in the cards this weekend as Disney’s “Toy Story 3” looks to become only the 11th film in history to cross the $400 million mark in domestic revenue.

Add shopping on top of that and you have every woman’s fantasy. Girlfriends, great food, desserts and great shopping give a girl a heart flutter. Josephine’s Tea Rooms and Gift Shops opened in 1979 in Godfrey. They are located four miles north
part of Monticello College that was founded in 1838. Josephine’s M o n t i c e l l o H o u se w a s a d d e d a s a n a d d i t i o n n e x t d o o r. Make sure to allow plenty of time for shopping as there are literally thousands of items to look at. The newest addition is Fred’s Shed located behind the Monticello House. It features sales, close outs
of Alton, and a 30 minute drive from downtown St. Louis. The beautiful perfectly manicured gardens are a lovely spot to sit for a while or take a leisurely stroll. Enjoy the fountain, gazebo, outdoor seating and just the beauty of the surroundings. The gift shops are in the original house which once was
and mark downs. The tea rooms were added in 1986. There are three dining rooms plus the outdoor patios. Lunch is served six days a week. To tempt your taste buds, here is a sampling of the menu: Fresh Garden Salad: Lettuce, fresh greens, and a variety of fresh vegetables with homemade roll. Chef’s Special: Mixed salad with

A tight time for teen stores NEW YORK (AP) — Half-priced jeans and promotional freebies are already popping up at the mall with the start of school still weeks away. Teen clothing sellers may have had some misplaced optimism about the strength of the economic recovery when orders were placed in the spring, and department stores are armed with hip jeans and fast fashion of their own. The battle for back-to-school dollars is giving parents more affordable choices for back-to-school clothing. Aeropostale Inc. just started marking down all new jeans by 50 percent. They’re 40 percent off at Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Other sales gimmicks include free cell phones and a chance to audition for a movie. The economy, which seemed on the mend a few months ago, has hit some speed bumps, and that has some industry experts wondering if teen merchants will be able to get rid of the piles of jeans and flashy T-shirts they bought expecting a stronger consumer rebound. Stubbornly high unemployment, especially bad among teens, has shoppers keeping a lid on spending and spurring bargain-hunting in a teen back-to-school clothing market worth $11 billion, according to market research firm NPD Group Inc. Consumers have been shopping increasingly later for back-to-school needs, with the bulk of the buying in August and September. That’s why stores are trying to grab shoppers now with big discounts, though they could take a hit on profits if the discounting goes too far. Often, that’s what it takes to get parents to spend. “If my kids really want something that’s not on sale, I make them use their own money,” said Lori Ahrenhoerster, 40, of Whitefish Bay, Wis., the mother of two daughters, ages 7 and 15, and a 12-year-old son. With Americans spending more of their limited discretionary dollars away from clothing and more toward gadgets like flat-panel TVs and Apple Inc.’s iPads, the fight to get shoppers to spend for back-toschool fashions will be intense for all clothing merchants. But for teen chains in shopping malls, it’s been a slower climb out of the recession’s sales funk than for their bigger rivals. More-expensive merchants such as A&F had to cut prices to cater to thriftier shoppers. J.C. Penney Co. and Macy’s Inc. are muscling in on their turf as well, taking a page from white-hot fastfashion chains such as Forever 21 and Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB by quickly changing assortments of exclusive, affordable fashions. Macy’s is betting its new Material Girl fashion line, created by pop star Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes, will resonate with

a younger generation who didn’t go clubbing in sheer lace tops. The collection, a modern twist on that 1980s look, is priced from $12 to $40. Department stores are going after teens where they hang out online. Penney recruited six trend-setting teens to create YouTube “haul” videos, where they critique fashions from their latest shopping trips (which Penney paid for). These videos are a key ingredient in the chain’s fall marketing. Teen retailers have more to lose. They get about 25 percent of annual sales from the back-to-school season, instead of 10 percent to 15 percent for department stores, according to Kurt Salmon Associates, a retail consultancy. They were also hurt more by
the recession. Teen merchants’ 1.5 percent revenue increase since February, the start of the industry’s fiscal year, is hardly a rebound compared with last year ’s 10.5 percent drop during the same period. Department stores had a 4.5 percent increase so far this year, a firmer bounce from a 5.9 percent decline. The figures are based on revenue at stores open at least a year. Complicating everything is teen clothing specialists were much more optimistic than rivals when they placed orders earlier in the year when the economy looked stronger, said Eric Beder, retail analyst at Brean Murray, Carret & Co. That forced them to cut prices more than planned on summer goods to make
room for fall deliveries. “The mistakes of the second quarter are still piling up into the third quarter,” Beder said. “We are going to see very aggressive discounting.” Department stores will fare better, he said. Also working against the teen chains: In tough economic times, spending decisions shift more toward parents. That favors discounters and department stores, which tend to carry more wholesome brands, Beder said. The slump for the teen chains, which had routinely posted strong sales gains for a decade or more, began in 2008 with the recession. Teen unemployment has since risen steadily and is now at 26 percent. The burgeoning recession also meant
teens couldn’t rely on their parents to buy extras and pushed the teen chains to double-digit sales declines. One bright spot has been Aeropostale, which has consistently posted sales increases and whose jeans are 20 percent less expensive than A&F’s, which run about $53 for the premium washes. But even Aeoropostale sees the need to discount. Business at The Buckle, which offers name-brand clothes like Lucky jeans ($89 and up), has sputtered since April. Besides discounts, teen retailers are rolling out a raft of gimmicks. A&F resurrected its racy and controversial catalog after a sevenyear hiatus. The theme: a “VIP Backstage pass” to an A&F screen test.

New season to feature paintings, prints, concert posters By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
G
allery 210, one of the areas most cutting edge art venues, will once again be hosting some great exhibits for the 2010-2011 season. Located on the University of Missouri St. Louis campus, this gallery offers some of the best art exhibit selections in the area. The next season at Gallery 210 will include the following exhibits: From Aug. 26 to Dec. 4, “Exposure 13” will feature artwork by local artists Joe Chesla, Martin Brief and Asma Kazmi. The exhibit is part of a long-running annual series hosted by Gallery 210. The goal of the series is to present new and challenging work by local artists. From Aug. 26 to Oct. 9, the gallery will display “Robot Love,” a video exhibit by Hilary Harp. Inspired in part by the cover of “Megatron Man,” Patrick Cowley’s archetypal ‘80s disco album, “Robot Love” is a celebration of the playful, synthetic, party-driven and disposable culture of disco. From Oct. 21 to Dec. 5, “Rosalyn Schwartz: A Survey of Paintings”
will feature paintings and works on paper by Schwartz from 1995 to present. Schwartz is a professor emeritus of painting at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Her bold paintings are sometimes abstract, occasionally brooding and always intense. From Oct. 28 to Dec. 5, the gallery will present “No Damage,” by Caspar Stracke. The video art is a composition made of fragments from more than 80 different feature and documentary films showing the architecture of New York City. From Jan. 20 to March 12, the gallery will feature “POSTGIG,” a compilation of music posters curated by Clifford Stoltze, founder and creative director of Boston-based Stoltze Design. The traveling exhibit will feature posters created by several collectives, including Modern Dog, Aesthetic Apparatus, Patent Pending, The Small Stakes, Seripop, Hammerpress and The Decoder Ring. From Jan. 20 to April 2, the gallery will exhibit “Poster Girl,” a video by Hester Scheurwater, that depicts the protagonist’s nightmarish visions, thoughts and fantasies. From Feb. 17 to May 28, “Wildwood Press 1996-2009” will feature work by a group
of printmaking artists based in Wildwood, Mo. Dedicated to experimentation and the unexpected, Wildwood Press is known both for its printmaking and custom papermaking. From April 7 to 30, the annual exhibit “Parental Advisory” will
feature artwork by students from the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in the Department of Art and Art History at UMSL. From April 7 to May 28, the gallery will show “Suspension.” The video by Nicolas Provost lets go of realist constraints and goes back to the mirror images of some of the Brussels-based
visual artist’s earlier work. Provost’s work often walks the fine line between dualities, creating a balancing act between fiction and fine arts, the grotesque and the moving, and beauty and cruelty. From May 13 to 28, the gallery will present “Collaboration” featuring work by students from Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis and Hazelwood East High School in Missouri. The annual exhibit was previously known as “Portfolio” and focused on work by graduating students from St. Louis’ magnet school for the arts. This year, the exhibit also features collaborative art between Hazelwood East and Central VPA students. Gallery 210 was established in 1976 at UMSL. It was named for its initial location, 210 Lucas Hall. The gallery has since grown to include three exhibition spaces and a 50-seat auditorium at its current location, the Telecommunity Center at UMSL, One University Blvd. in St. Louis County (63121). Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or by appointment. All exhibits are free and open to the public. Call 314-516-5976 or visit gallery210.umsl.edu for more information.

Meet me at the fair The Missouri State Fair hosts First Lady’s Pie Contest By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge By the time you read this, the 2010 Missouri State Fair will be well under way, but there will still be plenty of time to enjoy the festivities that run through Sunday, Aug. 22. Missouri First Lady Georganne Wheeler Nixon will host the 2010 Missouri First Lady’s Pie Contest at the 2010 Missouri State Fair on Thursday, Aug. 19. This is Mrs. Nixon’s second year officiating the pie contest, which is one of the highlights of the fair. “I have met great chefs and bakers when visiting families from across the state of Missouri,” said the First Lady. Speaking in a video recently posted on YouTube, Mrs. Nixon recollected: “One of my favorite childhood memories is an apple pie, baking in my mother ’s kitchen.” Apple pie is still the First Lady’s favorite, although she speaks fondly of her mother ’s blueberry pies, as well as the pecan and pumpkin pies her mom made during the holiday season. Mrs. Nixon still takes time to bake pies herself, and shares her secret for a great cherry pie. “I use the tart cherries and just the right amount of sugar so that the pie isn’t too sweet,” she said, noting that when she and Governor Nixon were courting, he was,
“dazzled by my cherry pie.” “I encourage people to enter this contest and take part in the bounty of Missouri and be a part of the celebration at the State Fair,” said Mrs. Nixon. “May the best pies win.” Official rules, recipe forms and entry b l a n k s a r e a v a i l a b l e o n l i n e a t w w w. The 2010 Missouri State Fair will be conducted in Sedalia and continues through Aug. 22 under the theme, “Growing Great Memories,” which reflects Missouri’s agricultural heritage and the fair ’s place as one of the Show-Me State’s most popular family attractions. Visit www.MoStateFair. com or call 800-422-FAIR (3247) for more information. The Missouri Grape & Wine Board will also host a “Wine 101” class at 4 p.m. each Thursday, Friday and Saturday (August 19-21) at the Missouri Wine tent. Fairgoers 21 and older may attend, for a cost of $5, which includes a complimentary wine glass. Missouri’s Gold and silver medal-winning wines from the Missouri Wine Competition will be on display at the Missouri Wine booth in the Agriculture building. In addition to the many livestock and agriculture contests, non-professional performers with dreams of following in the
footsteps of Blue Springs, Mo., native David Cook can participate in the Missouri State Fair Idol Contest. The Budweiser tent will host qualifying rounds at 4 p.m. each of the first 10 days of the fair. One contestant from each daily round will move on to the finals at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22. Other highlights of the 2010 Missouri State Fair include: • The 58th Annual Governor ’s Ham Breakfast, 8 a.m., Thursday, August 19. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster for $20 per person. • Missouri Electric Cooperative Day, Friday, Aug. 20, featuring MSF Championship Bull Riding, at 7 p.m. in the State Fair Arena, sponsored by the Kansas City Area Toyota Dealers; and a Pepsi Grandstand Concert performance by Darius Rucker with The Band Perry at 7:30 p.m. • Science Saturday, Aug. 21, coordinated by SCOPE, Missouri 4-H, Hooked on Science and the Missouri State Fair, featuring a Science Street Fair on the 14th and Aerospace Fun on the 21st, including a world record for water rocket launch at 1:30 p.m. For more information about the 2010 M i s s o u r i S t a t e F a i r, “ G r o w i n g G r e a t Memories,” visit www.MoStateFair.com or call 800-422-FAIR (3247).

Travel Travel briefs Maine State Museum hosts sardine canning exhibit AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The last three sardine cans packed at America’s last industrial sardine cannery are on display as part of a new exhibit on display at the Maine State Museum in Augusta. The museum’s exhibit, “End of the Line...America’s Last Sardine Cannery,” is on view until Sept. 4. The old Stinson Seafood plant in Prospect Harbor was the last industrial sardine cannery not only in Maine, but in the U.S., when it shut down for good in April. The Maine State Museum’s exhibit features videos on Maine’s storied sardine industry, historical artifacts and photographs. More information is available at www.mainestatemuseum.org.
Web embraces JetBlue flight attendant in N.Y. ruckus NEW YORK (AP) — A folk hero in digital times, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater has been thoroughly embraced by the Web. Not only have news stories about his meltdown on a plane from Pittsburgh to New York City been exceptionally popular on the Internet, but he’s been feted in all manner of online tribute. Even JetBlue Airways Corp. wryly noted on its blog post Wednesday that many people reacted: “Like, the entire Internet.” Slater has consistently ranked as one of the most popular topics on Twitter and has birthed a small cottage industry of Facebook pages, with titles such as “Free Steven Slater” and “I Support Steven Slater.” One group, dubbed the “Steven Slater Legal Defense Fund,” is seeking to raise money for the airline veteran. More than 650 people are members of the group, which was founded by Gary Baumgardner, a pilot who pledges transparency in donating all the collections to Slater. He said he had raised more than $1,500 as of early Wednesday. Slater, 38, is accused of cursing out a passenger over the intercom after his plane landed Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport, grabbing some beer and exiting on the plane’s emergency slide. He was arrested and jailed before being freed on bail. A defense attorney says Slater didn’t put anyone in danger. The website Free Steve Slater has been launched in support of Slater. It introduces itself: “Steve! This page is for you! Get in touch and let us know what you want to do with it!”
August 19, 2010
One of the trends on Twitter has been to imagine T-shirts dedicated to Slater ’s audacious escape. Film
critic Roger Ebert was among those churning out ideas, including: “Front: ‘I may be under arrest...’
Back: ‘But I got two free beers out of it.”’ Actual T-shirts were already for
sale online, though with the more simple “Free Steven Slater” printed on them.
Unlikely Educator Spurs Economic Growth With Alphabet Marty McCabe of Koetting Ford Says The ABCs Can Help You Own A Nicer, Newer Car Just In Time For “Back To School”
EDWARDSVILLE – At it once again is the uncommon car dealer, Marty McCabe from Koetting Ford, just in time for the new school year to begin. McCabe says his new approach to owning a nicer, newer car will simplify your life and help the local economy. “Let’s face it…everybody wants a nicer, newer car. And buying a car is great for the economy! A better car can help you get to work, get your kids to school on time and in style, plus it helps us keep 48 good people employed here at our business…not to mention the countless other folks who work to design, build, transport, maintain, fuel and insure the vehicles,” explained Marty McCabe. McCabe says that buying a car doesn’t need to be complicated or stressful. He believes that there’s a lesson to be learned from grade school. “My kids are getting ready to head back to school, and that got us thinking about learning the ABCs and 123s – and how, back in school, life was simple and fun. I think buying a car should be simple and fun too…so I created the ABCs of Car Buying.”
This “back to school” themed sale makes this month an excellent time to upgrade to a newer car, truck van or SUV. Here‛s how it works:
A: Any trade, running or not, gets the highest trade value of the year! B: Bring in just $250 for a down payment, and you could drive away the same day.
Buying a car should be simple and fun, so Koetting Ford has created the ABCs of Car Buying. A: Any Trade gets the highest trade value of the year! B: Bring in $250 for a down payment and drive away the same day. C: Credit is not an issue because we work with the most helpful lenders in the country. Our goal is 100% approval. Call or visit Koetting Ford at Illinois Rt. 3 at Pontoon Rd., Granite City, IL 62040 today!
C: Credit is not an issue. We work with the most helpful lenders in the country and understand that bad things happen to good people. Our goal this month is 100% approval. Additionally, when you buy any vehicle from Koetting Ford before August 31, we’ll donate $100 to the elementary, middle or high school of your choice. What a great way to kick the school year off the right way! “We always have fun here at Koetting Ford but this month is going to be something to remember. We’re helping the schools, helping the kids, helping the economy and helping you too. It’s never been easier to get a nicer, newer
We want to sell cars. You want to buy a car. So we‛ve simplified the process and made owning a nicer, newer car as easy as ABC. Here’s the deal:
A: Any trade, running or not, gets the highest trade value of the year!

car!” The generous tradein allowance was inspired by the popular Cash For Clunkers program initiated by President Obama, which proves even car dealers can learn a thing or two. “People are still talking about Cash For Clunkers…which happened one year ago this month. We pay attention to what our customers want. They’ve been asking for Cash For Clunkers to come back, and we’re giving it to them. We thought back to school time was the perfect time to show off what we’ve learned!” explained McCabe.
Why Is August A Good Month To Buy?
Many people don’t realize that the new car manufacturers start releasing next year’s models this time of year. That means that every car at the dealership essentially turns one year older this month than it was last month. That extra month drives prices down making August one of the best times of year to buy.
Banged Up Credit From The School of Hard Knocks?
“At Koetting Ford we realize that things have been pretty tough the past few years. We’re really good at helping you overcome the bruises on your credit report that you’ve earned from living in the real world. We believe in helping people make a fresh start. Come in and give us a chance to help,” says McCabe.
ABCs Make Buying A Car Fast, Fun and Easy
What will you do with the extra money you receive for your trade-in? You could use it to lower your monthly payments. You could use it to be able to afford “more car” for your money. You could use it to pay off other bills. You could even use it buy all new clothes for your kids before school starts. It’s entirely up to you. Come in to Koetting Ford located at Illinois Rt. 3 at Pontoon Rd., Granite City, IL 62040 or call 618-452-5400 and buy a nicer, newer vehicle before August 31 and take advantage of top dollar for your trade, $250 down payments, and more lenient credit requirements. Plus let Koetting Ford donate $100 to the school of your choice.

Travel Travel briefs July is busiest month in Yellowstone’s history YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — More people are visiting Yellowstone National Park than ever before. The park announced Wednesday that it set a new monthly record for visits during July, when more than 957,000 people came through its gates. That’s nearly 60,000 more than last July, when the park’s previous monthly record was set. July usually is Yellowstone’s busiest month, followed by August, June, September and May. Yellowstone is on track to meet or exceed last year ’s record year. Nearly 3.3 million people visited Yellowstone — the world’s first national park — in 2009. Visits for 2010 are up 5.8 percent over last year so far. Just over 2 million people visited in the first seven months of the year, the first time that’s happened in the park’s history, spokesman Al Nash said. Nash said visitors, especially families, continue to be attracted to Yellowstone during the recession, likely because their stay can easily be adapted to how much they’re able to spend. For $25, a carload of visitors can roam Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park for a week and can choose to camp or stay in a lodge in the park or motel beyond its gates. During July, both campgrounds and lodges reported being full by mid-morning. In previous years, Nash said campsites could still be found in the afternoon.
Disney World opening luxury pet resort Aug. 27 LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Pluto never had it so good: The next major attraction to open at Walt Disney World won’t be for the kids — it will be for the dogs. The luxury facility will accommodate way more than 101 Dalmatians. vacation villas with outdoor patios and flat-screen TVs for watching videos like “Homeward Bound” ($59), or 226-square-foot luxury suites ($76) with private outdoor p l a y y a rd s and personal pet concierges. Cats can choose between two- and four-story condos. In addition to the water park, Best Friends offers play groups, outdoor runs, walking trails and areas for playing ball or Frisbee. Pets can be left for the day without overnight boarding, and owners can drop by to visit or play on their way from hotels to the park. “We know that people who bring their pets with them to Disney want to see their pets,” said Deb Bennetts, spokeswoman for Best Friends, which operates more than 40 pet-boarding facilities around the U.S. “If they were simply going to board their pet, they would board their pet at home. They want to see and interact with their pet while at the resort, so we’ve made it easy for them to do that with all of this wonderful outdoor space.” The Best Friends resort will replace five existing kennels at Disney World and will be located on Bonnet Creek Parkway within the Disney complex directly across from the Port Orleans resort.
NH’s northernmost city starts sightseeing tours CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The city of Berlin, which is redeveloping itself after the loss of its pulp mill industry in 2006, has started a weekly sightseeing bus tour of historic sites that focuses on early settlers and the industrial boom years. “I love this city,” said Paul “Poof” Tardiff, a local historian who has written three books about the North Country city. “I want this place to bloom.” Tardiff will narrate the two-hour tours, presented by the Northern Forest Heritage Park, a nonprofit
group. The tour will take in the two distinct mountains in Berlin. Mount Jasper housed a mine and quarries that was worked by Native Americans. “It has 7,000 years of history,” Tardiff said. People can walk a trail to see the cave where they worked. The other is Mount Forist, which dominates the city. “I call it the guardian of the avenues,” he said. “All the avenues are right there at the base. Looking at it is astonishing.” The tour also features a Russian church and the Brown Company Research and Development buildings, which housed scientists and researchers who helped develop patents for the city’s mills. Tardiff also plans to recount stories such as the invention of an early tape rule by Berlin resident Hiram Farrand, and the growth of skiing in the area. Dick Huot, director of Northern Forest Heritage Park, said the city used to offer a tour of the pulp mill, which has since closed and been demolished. From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, the city was a center for logging and paper industries. Residents seem to be interested i n l e a r n i n g m o re a b o u t t h e community’s heritage, Huot said. “Locally, people have e-mailed me and said, ’That’s a really cool idea. I’m going to take my kids on that,”’ Huot said. The tour, which costs $10 for adults and $6 for children 5-11, can be combined with a pontoon boat tour of the Androscoggin River, which provided water power for sawmills. The package would cost $15 for adults and $8 for children.

The committee also designated four sites as endangered, including E v e rg l a d e s N a t i o n a l P a r k i n Florida. The Everglades, home to 20 endangered species, was previously on the list from 1993 to 2007 because large amounts of water were being diverted to cities. UNESCO said in a statement the park was added again for the same reason. Other places newly added to the endangered list were the Atsinanana rain forests of Madagascar, where illegal logging and poaching are a threat to rare lemurs; the Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery in Georgia, and the tombs of Buganda Kings in Uganda. The Galapagos Islands in Ecuador were removed from the endangered list. Being on the endangered list allows the agency to allocate immediate assistance from the World Heritage Fund. In a statement, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization said the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands was designated a World Heritage Site because it symbolizes the “dawn of the nuclear age.” Nuclear bomb tests conducted there in the 1940s and ’50s also had “major consequences” on the geology and environment of the atoll, UNESCO said. Also designated a World Heritage site was the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a trade route from Mexico north to the U.S. that was used

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge There are a couple of truths that ring evident right now. First, it is hot. Not just take-a-swim hot, or wear-shorts hot. It is hard-to-breathe, break-a-sweat-at-first-stepinto-the-outdoors, miserable hot. Second, the electric meter is spinning at an alarming pace from all the air conditioning and fans needed to keep us comfortable. When the weather is like this, I do not want to go home to fix a big dinner that heats up the house, and in turn heats me up. I want quick and cool. Flavorful finds – a taste of what’s new By GREG MORAGO Houston Chronicle If you like Indian foods, clap your hands. If you’re a fan of pumpkin and squash, rejoice. If you dig local products with a sense of place, take heart. Are bold flavors high on your list? Good. What about puckery flavors (such as pickles and vinegars)? If they’re your thing, we’ve got news for you. All those flavors - and so many more - are on their way to your supermarket and gourmet food store in abundance, according to the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade. The association’s annual Fancy Foods Show, held recently in New York, is the staging ground for more than 80,000 specialty food products vying for the attention of retailers and food service professionals. That’s a lot of food to take in. And yet each year flavor trends emerge from so many gourmet foods trying to find their way in the marketplace. This year ’s trending flavors are an interesting lot: Acid trip: The tart smack of good vinegar showed up in a great number of products including hibiscus vinegar, walnut champagne vinegar, olive oil peach vinegar, lime rice vinegar and apple ice wine vinegar. Out of India: The riches of the
Asian spice market show up in a variety of new Indian-inspired products including curry ketchup, cashew and cream cooking sauce, tandoori chicken sandwiches, tikka masala-flavored marinara sauce, and masala-spiked flavoring salts. Even Cabot is coming out with a Tiki Masala Cheddar Cheese. Hot shots: Chiles, Sriracha, chiledusted salts, hot pepper pickles, spicy marinades and chile-flecked jellies are bringing on the heat. Fall friends: Squash, pumpkin and sweet potato aren’t just autumnal c r a v i n g s . N e w p ro d u c t s t h a t showcase these fall flavors include pumpkin salsa, butternut squash pasta sauce, sweet potato butter and sweet potato chocolate. Nut job: Grains, nuts, corn and seeds continue to grow in popularity. That means more flax seed crackers, high-end popcorn, oat and corn cakes, lentil chips and flavored nuts. Fig and pig: Two great foods that go well together and are delicious on their own. Fig jams, fig syrup and fig dressings are right up there with a growing variety of pork products. Think locally: Foods that speak of regional flavors and showcase local and heritage products show support for the culinary artisans in our own back yards. Those products include local jerky, pickles, chowders, hot sauces, chips, candy and cheeses.
Upstate New York produce Bronx bound SCHOHARIE N.Y. (AP) — A local bounty of potatoes, carrots, lettuce and more was loaded on to a truck one recent morning in upstate New York farm country. Within a day, the just-picked food began showing up on dinner plates 130 miles south in some of New York City’s poorest neighborhoods. It’s a new farm-to-city pipeline offering a fresh take on communitysupported agriculture, or CSAs, the increasingly popular programs in which households buy shares of farmers’ harvests and get weekly deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables. This program, called Corbin Hill Road Farm, began linking farmers here in the Schoharie Valley with New York City families in June. Organizers have some grand ambitions: nourish thousands of people in poor city neighborhoods and give them some ownership in a faraway farm while helping upstate farmers who need a market for their goods. “New York, it has the biggest appetite in the world. We grow food,” Richard Ball of Schoharie Valley Farms said before he helped load food from his and neighboring operations into the Bronx-bound

truck. “We’ll probably all do better. They’ll eat better. It’s really a matter of connecting the dots.” About 225 people — mostly in the South Bronx area but also Harlem — pay $18 or less for weekly deliveries from Corbin Hill — prices that are cheaper than grocery stores. Overseers want to grow the project steadily over the next decade to eventually feed about 3,500 households in those neighborhoods. The South Bronx not only ranks as one of the poorest areas in the country, but many families there can neither afford nor find fresh food. Jill Roche of the Hunts Point Alliance for Children said their Bronx neighborhood — of the same name — could be considered a “food desert” given the paltry produce selection available at many corner stores. While demand for fresh, local food has soared in recent years, that means little to people who can’t afford to pay more for fresh arugula or drive to a market. Advocates have made some progress in poorer city areas through traditional CSAs, urban gardens and farmers markets. Corbin Hill organizers have respect for those approaches, but are thinking bigger.
Make it easy: Convenience drives successful product introductions. Make the product easy to use; let us get a delicious dinner on the table faster and we’re happy. These new flavors and products have a reason for coming into marketplace prominence: You can thank yourself for their arrival. “It usually comes from what consumers are looking for,” said Ron Tanner, vice president of communication and education for NASFT. “It’s pretty much driven by consumer preference. People have developed a liking for certain flavors.” Those flavors emerge in a number of ways. They might start with hot trends in upscale restaurants; top chefs and influential food television personalities could also drive the trend. Eventually, if manufacturers are paying attention, it’ll find its way to the specialty foods marketplace and eventually to mass market. “Three or four years ago the big trend was salt and chocolate,” with
a few key products peaking at the show, Tanner said. This year, there were more than 300. The flavors on display at the show say a lot about what Americans are eating and where they choose to spend their food dollars. Even in a weak economy, certain gourmet foods can spike. Indian foods and heritage food products are good examples of that, Tanner said. “Indian food has been on the cusp of emerging for many years and it finally broke out. Consumers love those flavors,” he said. “With heritage foods, we found that people are looking for those types of products. They want local flavor and will continue to support local entrepreneurs. It makes people feel better about how they’re spending their money.” So who is spending on specialty foods? A growing population of culinary consumers who are developing more sophisticated food tastes. “Specialty food consumers a re y o u n g e r. T h e y a re m o re experimental. And they’re willing
to part with their dollars for food because food is an important part of their lifestyle,” Tanner said. But at the end of the day it just has to taste good. And never underestimate the willingness of consumers to try something that will save them time but not scrimp on flavor. Two of the most interesting things at the show were examples of both. In terms of taste, a product called Taste No. 5 Umami Paste is billed as transformation in a tube. A squirt of the paste promised to turn the blandest meals into something delicious by cranking up their flavors (it can be added to soups, sauces, spreads). The other cool thing was a jarred Pot Roast Sauce from Tyler Florence. Throw it in a slow cooker or roaster with a hunk of meat and some veggies and you have Sunday supper. What flavors are peaking that might be major trends in 2011? Get ready for a rise in smoked foods and a growing hunger for fermented foods. Hello, kimchee!
