Scopes monkey trial still stirs passions DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) — In 1925, two o f A m e r i c a ' s m o s t re n o w n e d f i g u re s f a c e d o ff i n t h e s o u t h e a s t Te n n e s s e e town of Dayton to debate a burning issue — whether man evolved over millions of years or was created by God in his present form. To d a y, o n l y o n e o f t h e t w o , t h e Christian orator William Jennings Bryan, is commemorated with a statue on the c o u r t h o u s e l a w n . A g ro u p o f a t h e i s t s hopes to change that. Bryan defended the Biblical account while trial lawyer and skeptic Clarence Darrow defended evolution in the " S c o p e s m o n k e y t r i a l " — f o r m a l l y, Tennessee vs. John Thomas Scopes. The case became front-page news nationwide and i s me mo ri a li z e d i n s o n g s , b o o k s , plays and movies. N e a r l y a c e n t u r y l a t e r, t h e d e b a t e pitting evolution against the biblical account of creation rages on nationally and locally. Nearly all scientists accept evolution, but many Christians see it as incompatible with their faith. Just two y e a r s a g o i n D a y t o n , p ro f e s s o r s a t a Christian college named for Bryan were fired in a dispute over whether Adam and Eve were historical people. One might expect a town that reveres Bryan to resist efforts to memorialize his antagonist, but Reed Johnson, managing editor of The Herald-News in Dayton, said that vocal resistance hasn't m a t e r i a l i z e d . H e d o e s n ' t re c a l l a n g r y
letters to the editor. County Commissioner Bill Hollin said he doesn't think many people are aware of the effort, but he's against it and thinks others will join him. "I don't see where it would help the community at all to put it up there," he said. Bryan, on the other hand, represents more than the Scopes trial, Hollin said. His legacy in Dayton includes the college that was founded in 1930 and educates many of the area's young people. Still, townspeople are resigned to the idea of a Darrow statue, said Christian writer Rachel Held Evans, a Bryan College alumna. "I think there is a sense that, 'Oh, it's only fair. We have our side, and they have their side. We have our statue, and they have their statue," she said. Ed Larson, who wrote a Pulitzer Prizewinning book about the trial called "Summer for the Gods," said that Dayton has historically been hospitable to both sides, and that outrage over the teaching of evolution in 1925 was manufactured. The trial is often remembered as the persecution of teacher Scopes for t e a c h i n g e v o l u t i o n , w h i c h Te n n e s s e e had outlawed, but it actually began as a publicity stunt for Dayton, Larson said. Larsen explained that locals had responded to a newspaper advertisement by the American Civil Liberties Union looking for someone to test Tennessee's anti-evolution law in court. No one had complained about Scopes or his teaching;
he was recruited to be the defendant, Larson said. Scopes never spent time in jail and was offered his job back after the trial, Larsen said — and Bryan even offered to pay his fine. Evans said part of the trial's legacy has been negative: a lasting sense that belief in evolution conflicts with Christianity, something she no longer believes. "I grew up as a conservative evangelical, and we always heard about the trial that William Jennings Bryan was a hero who came in and put everyone in their place," she said. "Even in college, I was told I could either believe in the Bible or I could believe in evolution." But many say part of the legacy is positive: Dayton has seen a stream of visitors to the red-brick courthouse in the town square that still looks much as it did when the judge moved the trial's action onto the lawn — worried the floor would cave in from the weight of spectators — and Darrow began questioning Bryan's views on the Bible. The courthouse basement now holds a small museum. On the trial's anniversary i n J u l y, a f e s t i v a l i s h e l d , w i t h a courtroom play re-enacting trial scenes. At this year's festival, Dayton resident Richard DeArk sold hand-crafted earrings, some with a monkey theme, on the courthouse lawn near the Bryan statue. Asked about the Darrow statue, he said, "It's about time!" Tom Brady, the courthouse maintenance s u p e r v i s o r, s a i d h e h a s n ' t h e a r d

To m D a v i s , p r e s i d e n t o f t h e R h e a County Historical and Genealogical S o c i e t y, w a s a s k e d t o m a k e a recommendation to the county executive about the two statues. He said in an interview that the group supported the Bryan statue in 2005 but realized at the time "if we do this, we'll probably f ace a req uest f or a Dar row statue one day, and we'll probably have to support that." The American Humanist Association is raising money for the statue, but the creative side is the work of Pennsylvania sculptor Zenos Frudakis, who says Darrow is too important to the story to leave out. Frudakis said he has the county executive's permission to erect the statue opposite Bryan on the courthouse lawn as long as the county doesn't have to spend any money on it and it is similar in size and style to the Bryan statue. But County Commissioner Hollin said he believes his panel will have to give its blessing first, something he does not see happening. Frudakis said he is a fan of Darrow but doesn't want his statue to be controversial. " R i g h t n o w t h e y o n l y h a v e Wi l l i a m Jennings Bryan there, standing alone," F r u d a k i s s a i d . " A d d D a r r o w, a n d i t recreates the historical drama of 1925, the way it played out in the public eye and galvanized the nation."

"Jason Bourne"
Jason Bourne, as played by Matt Damon across four movies, is forever disappearing off the grid only to reluctantly resurface years later and again menace the CIA. He's the spy who came in from the cold only to return to the cold, come in again, and, yet again, head back to the cold. In the chilly and bleak "Jason Bourne," the amnesia-ed assassin has been resurrected again, along with director Paul Greengrass, with whom Damon returns to the franchise after a nine year break. Bourne is still brooding. Greengrass' hand-held camera is still frenetic. And the saga's lethal precision is still sharp. The spy game, already far from a martini-sipping affair in previous installments, is resolutely grim in "Jason Bourne." The superspy, now a hulking mass of bullet-scarred muscle, is spending his days torturing himself in bare-knuckle brawls, haunted by his past. In shattering set-pieces and terse emotionless dialogue, any remaining sunlight has been drained away. The amount of people brazenly killed by Vincent Casell, the "asset" in Bourne's pursuit, may well outnumber the words spoken by Bourne in the entire film. Though first conceived in 1980 by Robert Ludlum, Bourne is perhaps the ultimate post-9/11 hero. Especially in the hands of Greengrass (who also employed his gritty realism in the Sept. 11 drama "Flight 93"), Bourne is a wrecking ball of accountability for America's clandestine past. He's part fantasy (his preternatural control of out-of-control events is reassuring) and part reality (American disillusionment made visceral). In "Jason Bourne," the digital dragnet is tightening around Bourne. The film is self-consciously set in a post-Snowden world; the CIA is hacked by Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles, whose smarts have given all of these films a kick), who's threatening to reveal the covert Treadstone operation. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence and action and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Bad Moms"
The comedy "Bad Moms " fancies itself a "Hangover" for the PTA set. And, while a wild send-up of modern parental perfection — that insidious idea that exists only in commercials and glossy magazines — is a worthy and fresh subject for a fun summer comedy, "Bad Moms" is ultimately rather conventional. Set in an upper middle class Chicago suburb, "Bad Moms" centers on Amy (Mila Kunis), a perpetually stressed and overworked 32-year-old with a part time job and two super busy pre-teens. Lest you think Kunis is a little too young to have pre-teens, the first line in the movie has her explaining that she got pregnant at 20. The movie is on the defense before it even gets going. Amy spends her days shuttling her kids (Oona Laurence and Emjay Anthony) from school to soccer practice to Russian lessons. She puts up with grief from her incompetent 20-something boss (Clark Duke), her loser husband Mike (David Walton) and the mean moms of the PTA (Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith, Annie Mumolo). She does her son's school projects for him and apologizes profusely to her ungrateful family for being late with the beautiful homemade roast chicken she's made for dinner while her husband sits around like a dope. And she does all of this while still maintaining perfect hair, makeup and clothes. Her breaking point comes when she realizes her spouse is not only a lazy dope, but also cheating on her with a woman from the internet. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual material, full frontal nudity, language throughout, and drug and alcohol content." RUNNING TIME: ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

"Suicide Squad"
"Pete's Dragon"
The superhero movie is at a strange crossroads. It generally either takes itself too seriously ("Man of Steel," ''Batman v Superman") or delights in not caring a bit ("Deadpool"). The choice, dear moviegoer, is yours. Do you prefer your costumed heroes to brood or to break bad? Right now, good is out; self-proclaimed "edginess" is in; and a cape might get you turned away from the nightclub. Riding the trend is David Ayer's day-glo superhero circus "Suicide Squad," a gleefully nihilistic, abysmally messy romp that delights in upending the genre's conventions and tries desperately to, like, totally blow your mind with its outre freak show. It's less of a movie than a long trailer that doesn't provoke as much as it thinks it does. It's stitched together by an endless jukebox of everything from "House of the Rising Sun" to K7's "Come Baby Come," a soundtrack gimmick taken straight from "Guardians of the Galaxy" (which more successfully gave the superhero movie new moves). It's employed three times before the opening credits have even finished rolling, an early cue to the filmmaking talent at work. Despite the train wreck of "Batman v Superman" (the last DC Comics challenge to Marvel's dominance), excitement is high for "Suicide Squad" thanks to a marketing campaign that rivals the presidential ones and the promise of some punk in the poppy, PG-13 realm of the superhero movie. But the nastiness of "Suicide Squad" is superficial, merely fetishized gestures of ultra-violence that will impress few beyond 13-year-old boys. (Sorry, that's unkind to 13-year-old boys.) RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language." RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
After an exhausting summer buffet of set pieces, superheroes and whatever s-word you might use for "Suicide Squad," the gentle "Pete's Dragon" is a welcome palate cleanser. Where other summer movies are chest-thumping, it's quiet; where others are brashly cynical, it's sweetly sincere; where others are lacking in giant cuddly dragons, "Pete's Dragon" has one. Few may remember the 1977 Disney original, in which a young boy's best friend was a bubbly dragon invisible to others. As part of Disney's continuing effort to remake its animated classics in live-action, "Pete's Dragon" has been confidently reborn as an earnest tale of green-winged wonder. David Lowery, a veteran of the independent film world and the director of the lyrical crime drama "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," inherits a far bigger film. But his "Pete's Dragon" still maintains the homespun feel of an American fable. Spielberglight, you might call it. The film begins, in the "Bambi" tradition, in parental tragedy. Pete's family is driving through a remote Pacific Northwest forest with Pete nestled in the backseat of the station wagon, reading a children's book about a dog named Elliott. A deer sprints out and, in poetic slow-motion, the gravity of the car's interior is upended. The car flips off the road and Pete staggers from the crash. Flashing forward six years, Pete (Oakes Fegley) is a wild 10-year-old orphan living in the woods alone except for his magical companion, the dragon Elliott. As far as CGI creatures go, Elliott is an irresistible one. Furry as a fairway, he's like an enormous emerald-green puppy. Far from the "Game of Thrones" dragon variety, he's more adept at chasing his own tail than breathing fire. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action, peril and brief language." RUNNIING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
When a generous patriarch dies, the lives of two families are altered in Ira Sachs' beautifully poignant slice of life drama "Little Men ." In the film, Brian Jardine (Greg Kinnear), a struggling actor, his wife, Kathy (Jennifer Ehle), a psychotherapist and the breadwinner of the family, and their 13-year-old son Jake (Theo Taplitz) uproot their Manhattan lives and move into Brian's late father's home in Brooklyn. On the ground floor of the residence is a tiny store that sells handmade dresses. The owner, a Chilean woman, Leonor Calvelli (Paulina Garcia) also has a young son, Tony (Michael Barbieri), who Jake quickly befriends. Jake is an old soul with an artist's eye and sensitivity. Tony is a charismatic neighborhood kid with a thick Brooklyn accent and acting ambitions. They're both angling to get into the same art school too. Their friendship is pure, immediate and quite charming — these two kids are some true talents. But there's an unspoken tension lingering below the surface in Leonor's interactions with the Jardines. She knows what's coming even if the audience can't quite see it yet. They live side-by-side in relative peace for a time, and then the conversation happens: Brian tells Leonor that she needs to sign a new lease and pay more rent. Leonor had been shielded from the changing tides of the neighborhood under the charity and protection of Brian's father. They were friends, and he liked the "glamour" of having the shop there, she explains. But Brian is not his father and he and his sister are thinking practically about the space. What do they owe this woman, after all? And hasn't she gotten by for longer than she would have under any other circumstance? But even at a discount, Leonor can't afford the new rent. RATEDL PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, smoking and some language." RUNNING TIME: 85 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
It's happened. Someone has outdone the "Team America" puppet sex scene and even made it look somewhat quaint in comparison. Anyone even vaguely interested in the very R-rated animated film "Sausage Party " has likely heard whispers about the food orgy. Words can't even begin to do this sequence justice, but I guarantee you've never seen anything like it in a mainstream studio movie. It's jaw-dropping. Of course it's compliments of the minds that blew up a foreign leader in "The Interview" and reveled in the comedy of rape by demon in "This is the End." Yes, co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations once more to concoct what is easily the year's most audacious film. And it's packaged in animation cutesy enough for Pixar. In the grand tradition of "Toy Story," ''Sausage Party" imagines the lives of the foodstuffs in the local supermarket aisle. But it doesn't merely anthropomorphize the food. It gives them sexuality, lust, ethnicities and even religion. "Sausage Party" is just as much a sweet story about belief and faith as it is a vehicle for the filthiest jokes you've never dared imagine. Frank (Seth Rogen), a non-descript hot dog, waits somewhat impatiently with his fellow mates to be selected by the gods (humans) to be taken to a paradise in The Great Beyond (purchased). Everyone in the store knows something good is out there waiting. The foods and condiments and sweets begin every day with a rousing song about The Great Beyond and the Gods, each putting their own spin on it (i.e. the German mustard has added a line about exterminating Juice). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong crude sexual content, pervasive language, and drug use." RUNNING TIME: 89 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

Far from the "Game of Thrones" dragon variety, he's more adept at chasing his own tail than breathing fire. He's also the subject of local folklore, mostly as told by Robert Redford's woodcarving storyteller. But it's his forest ranger daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) that first encounters Elliott and ultimately leads to the dragon's discovery. Grace coaxes Elliott back into society and into the fold of her family. She has a daughter, Natalie (Oona Laurence) and lumber millrunning husband Jack (Wes Bentley). It's the push by a logging company — where
Jack's brother, Gavin (Karl Urban) is a guntotting lumberjack — into the forest that simultaneously begins flushing out Pete and Elliott from their home in the trees. The lush forest (New Zealand, again, subbing for North America) reigns over "Pete's Dragon," a tale scored with soft bluegrass and exuding an environment-friendly love for the beautiful and exotic splendors of nature. When competing interests come for Elliott, they are really fighting for the soul of the forest. There are Spielbergian gestures here of magic and family and faith, perhaps better orchestrated than Spielberg's own recent try at a Disney film, "The BFG." But it's missing a spark, a sense of danger and maybe a little humor.
Streep delivers on screen again By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I’ve always been more than a little interested in how an actor chooses his or her role. Surely, for most of the working actors, professional satisfaction is important, but I suspect a good many of them hope to earn a living and provide for their families. I’m talking more about the stars. Take Johnny Depp as an example. While Disney has courted his recurring presence as Captain Jack Sparrow, there was always a first time around where the character was unique. His other choices illustrate a man that has a winsome and selective process that keeps his audience guessing just as much as his agent. Edwards Scissorhands, Raoul Duke, Willy Wonka, Mort Rainey (“Secret Window”)…these are all performances
of a person clearly in control of their career trajectory. Do you think Will Smith would be Ali or Dr. Bennet Omalu if he hadn’t nailed down “Independence Day” and “Men in Black” back when we was just the big-eared comedy star of “The Fresh Prince”? I lead into this because the headlining star of this week’s biggest release is Meryl Streep, a woman clearly with nothing to prove to anyone in this generation or the one prior as to how to select a role that she is both confident she can perform and make her absolute self shine through. The titular “Florence Foster Jenkins” is an heiress, a true Manhattan socialite if ever there was one. She uses the immense wealth of her land-owning family to pursue in later life the artistic expression of music that has been a life’s work. A benefactor of many organizations, Florence is superbly
in tune with how to support music in her community and love it for the reasons many do, without having any true ability of her own to create it. But that’s the thing about music; it swells within you even when others don’t dance to your same melody. Her loving and supportive husband, St. Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant at his most charming), is there to make sure that his chronically ill and desperately eager wife never stumbles in her chase of the illusive return to prominence she felt during her one time playing piano for President Hayes at the age of seven. He works behind the scenes, freely spending her wealth, to pack venues with favored guests and kind friends who would never deign using hurtful words to describe Florence’s warbling and dramatic ham-handedness. He’s a keeper, this man, who clearly allows Florence to be the sun around which
his world revolves. But there is far more to him and to their relationship than anyone would suspect. While passionately in love, he also lives apart from her in a walk-up with his own age-appropriate girlfriend (Rebecca Ferguson) with whom he can live a more commonplace existence with things like casual clothing, drink, and physical intimacy. St. Clair wasn’t born into the prominence that he’s enjoyed with Florence, or so he tells the new pianist (Simon Helberg of TV’s “The Big Bang Theory”) he hires to help her daily practice. Helberg’s Cosme McMoon is a wispy whisper of both a man and a performer, but he can tickle the ivories with the best of them. He struggles to adapt to both Florence’s style (atrocious and awful to only those uncouth enough to hurt the feelings of a generous and lovely woman) and her
August 25, 2016
world. He’s never known the money or fame that their short association brings to him. At one of St. Clair’s parties, where I swear to you Grant says ‘hepcats’ and swing dances, he is ill at ease and a twist of worry. This was a big part in a film for an actor that is certainly in need of branching out. As for Streep herself, the actress really is at her best when she is able to convince all of her audience, in particular those in a big Carnegie Hall sequence that she is so untalented as to sing terribly. But shame on you, our talented friend. I was never suckered in for even a minute. Truly, it takes a remarkable presence to deliver so badly on cue, time and time again. “Florence Foster Jenkins” runs 110 minutes and is rated PG-13 for brief suggestive material. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Tuning in Springfield, Loverboy to perform in St. Charles
Over the past three decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. The creator of some of the finest powerpop of the ’80s, he’s a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl, “Don’t Talk to Strangers, “An Affair of the Heart, “I've Done Everything for You, “Love Somebody, and “Human Touch. He’s an accomplished actor who most recently starred opposite Meryl Streep in the feature film Ricki and the Flash and gave a chameleonic performance as the creepy Dr. Irving Pitlor in HBO’s prestige drama True Detective. He’s also a talented author — both his candid 2010 memoir Late, Late at Night (which Rolling Stone named one of the 25 greatest rock memoirs of all time) and his 2014 comedic novel Magnificent Vibration earned rave reviews and spots on the New York Times Best Sellers’ list. Rick’s latest studio album which is out now, Rocket Science features expertly crafted pop-rock songs that are open and electric. Loverboy With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound a n d h i g h - e n e rg y l i v e s h o w s , LOVERBOY has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multiplatinum plaques, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s Keep It Up and 1985’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend, such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It, “This Could Be the Night, “Hot Girls in Love, “The Kid is Hot Tonite, “Turn Me Loose, “When It’s Over, “Heaven In Your Eyes and “Queen of the Broken Hearts. Tommy Tutone In 1982, Tommy Tutone exploded onto the music scene with what is one of the best known songs in history. The song that sparked millions of prank calls is none other than ‘Jenny/867-5309’. Coming on the scene at the same time as MTV certainly didn’t hurt at all either, thus cementing him a place in the culture of the 80’s. The concert is Saturday, October 15, at The Family Arena in St. Charles. Tickets can be purchased at the Family Arena Ticket Office or online at www.metrotix.com. Prices: $90 (Gold Circle), $80 (Floor), $65 (Lower Level Sidelines), $60 (Lower Level Endzone), $45 (Upper Level) To charge by phone call MetroTix at 314-534-1111. All the while, he’s got to juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth

it if he can slay his way to his inheritance… and be done in time for tea. The most celebrated musical of the 2013-14 Broadway season, Gentleman’s Guide received ten 2014 Tony Award nominations, eventually winning four awards:

"Follies" to kick off Rep's season
For The Edge
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) will kick off its 50th anniversary season with an all-star cast performing in Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece "Follies". Directed by Rob Ruggiero, this brilliant and innovative musical runs September 7 – October 2 on the Browning Mainstage of the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts. Leading the cast are Broadway standouts Emily Skinner (as Phyllis), Bradley Dean (Ben), Christiane Noll (Sally) and Adam Heller (Buddy). The supporting cast includes Broadway performers Nancy Opel (Carlotta)
and Dorothy Stanley (Emily), as well as Chicago theatre luminary E. Faye Butler (Stella). St. Louis’ local theatre stars will also be well-represented in the cast. Joneal Joplin (Weismann), Zoe Vonder Haar (Hattie) and Ron Himes (Max) are among the area performers taking part in this landmark production of "Follies". The cast includes three Tony nominees: Skinner (for Side Show), Noll (for Ragtime) and Opel (for Urinetown). “We have assembled an extraordinary cast of actors which include Tony nominees, Broadway vets, top-notch local talent and
exciting young performers,” Ruggiero said. “I couldn’t be more excited to be helming this production of "Follies", which opens The Rep's 50th season.” “This is just a brilliant way to launch our 50th season,” said Steven Woolf, The Rep’s Artistic Director. “With a thrilling cast and impressive creative team, this will be a very special production of this amazing show." Featuring a book by James Goldman, Sondheim’s remarkable musical salutes the world of show business with lavish panache. The former stars of the Weismann "Follies" have gathered one last time to relive their faded glories. Past and present collide as

The Arts EAC looking forward and backward Exhibition varies from classic to contemporary By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge The Edwardsville Arts Center ’s current exhibit is entitled “Retro/Future: Classic Forms, Contemporary Designs” which features mostly metal work with forms that vary from classic jewelry with contemporary elements, to free standing or wall-hung sculptures. Sixteen artists from all over the country are a part of this exhibit that runs through Sept. 2. EAC Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball said that this show is being curated by SIUE Metalsmithing Professor Aimee Howard. “Aimee is the newest metalsmith professor at SIUE,” Tidball explained. “She’s from Indiana. She knows all of these artists.” Exhibiting Artists include Uli Rapp, Suzan Rezac, Sangsook Park, Laura Elizabeth Mullen, Paulette Myers, Jennifer Crupi, Christina McNealy, Amelia Toelke, Caitlin McDonald, Kelly Miller, Jill Baker Gower, Katelyn Butler, Stephanie Voegele, Rebecca Zink, Anika Smulovitz and Ashley Buchanan. “These artists are from all over which is cool because usually we only have local artists,” Tidball noted. “We have some new artwork that we’ve never seen before from other parts of the country which is always fun to have. It’s fun to see what people are doing in other parts of the world.” “All of these artists work with a classic design in some way whether it’s jewelry or something oldfashioned like hats or head-wear,” Tidball added. “There’s a lot of jewelry and fashion wear that is things that people have worn for hundreds and hundreds of years so classic in that way, but there’s a contemporary spin to everything.” Three of the artists – Kelly Miller, Christina McNealy and Caitlin

A piece of jewelry by Caitlin McDonald. McDonald – have connections to SIUE as either current grad students or students who have recently completed SIUE’s grad school. Miller describes her work as being influenced by demolition sites which are prevalent where she lives in the city of St. Louis. “Classic textures found in the mesmerizing industrial landscapes have seeped into my metalwork,” Miller writes in her artist’s statement.
“The repetitions of mechanized patterns visually anchor this work together. I embrace the mishmash of industrial aluminum, urethane foam, powder coating, and old tins, with precious metals and stones as materials used in my jewelry. This body of work offers a satirical yet aesthetically pleasing point of view on consumerism in America.” Miller’s work can also be found in the EAC’s gallery shop where it is
available for purchase. Tidball noted that McNealy, who will be starting grad school at SIUE this fall, takes sort of a sculptural approach to jewelry making and metalsmithing. “She talks about sort of the negative aspects of beauty and fashion and the burden it can place upon them,” Tidball said. “Her work is really interesting.” McDonald, a grad student at SIUE, has several pieces in the show. is entitled Entangled Bliss which is a unique neck piece of stunning metal flowers made of Nu gold brass and sterling silver. “She does a lot of fine cutting. She’s extremely skilled. It’s all made by hand – hammering and cutting. And if you look closely at the petals there’s words inscribed on the other side of the petals,” Tidball noted. The piece was inspired from the novel, “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” by D.H. Lawrence. “In this piece I’ve searched to unravel and understand the thoughts and feelings of Constance Chatterley, and other women that go through similar situations,” McDonald writes in her artist’s statement. “Like ivy, her commitment and eternal love for her husband never leaves, it’s everywhere, even when she finds comfort in the arms of another. But at the same time, this all encompassing, deep-rooted care and compassion causes harm and restlessness, 'taking possession of her like a madness.' As an escape, she finds the spark of a secret love and bliss, like gardenias growing midst the ivy. To the outside viewer one sees an elegant garden façade, but internally the entanglement is all consuming.” Concurrently in the Dennis DeToye Student Gallery is artwork made by District 7 Summer Zone students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The artwork was created by the students who participated in Masterpiece Mondays which were led by EAC art teachers. “We have two new teachers this year. They did a different project every Monday and each class had between one and two hours to complete a project. There were seven classes,” Tidball added. The student work includes oil pastel drawings, yarn work, tissue paper stained glass windows, yarn and tin foil art.

Rep announces Studio Theatre series
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) has announced its 2016-2017 season of performances in the Studio Theatre: Mothers and Sons, October 26-November 13, 2016; Constellations, January 18-February 5, 2017; and The Royale, March 8-26, 2017. The Studio Theatre series opens on October 26 in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts with Mothers and Sons by Terrence McNally. Mothers and Sons is a moving illustration of how societal changes have mpacted gay Americans in the past three decades. The show spotlights the journey of Katharine, a woman who is still coming to terms with the AIDSrelated death of her son 20 years prior. The Studio Theatre series continues with Constellations by Nick Payne. This daring, two-person show illuminates the limitless possibilities contained within one relationship. When Roland and Marianne meet at a party, a multiverse of potential outcomes unfolds. Closing the series is The Royale, by Marco Ramirez and directed by Stuart Carden. The brutal rhythm of boxing underscores this brilliantly stylized drama. Rising black prizefighter Jay “The Sport Jackson dominates his opponents, but the harsh social realities of the early 1900s force him to fight twice as hard to earn recognition outside of the ring.Season ticket packages for The Rep’s 2016-2017 Studio Theatre series are on sale now. By purchasing season tickets, subscribers can save substantially over the cost of purchasing individual show tickets and enjoy exclusive benefits. Studio Theatre subscription packages range from $105-$162 for all three shows. Studio Theatre single tickets (starting at $43.50) go on sale October 1. For more information about The Rep’s 2016-2017 season or to purchase subscriptions, visit The Rep Box Office, located inside the Loretto-Hilton Center at 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves. Ticket buyers may also charge by phone at 314-968-4925. For additional information on The Rep’s upcoming season, visit www. repstl.org.
