Dr. Peck – bringing wellness to the community By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Dr. Timothy Peck and his staff are wanting to offer the community something everyone needs, wellness. Chronic pain, stress, tension, muscle issues, bone imbalance and other ailments are some of the health issues that Dr. Peck wants to address with patients. “People come here with many different complications and are relieved to find that we do have solutions for them,” said Dr. Peck. Although Dr. Peck has been practicing in Glen Carbon for almost 13 years, he made the decision to partner with HealthSouce about two and a half years ago. “The reason I decided to partner with HealthSource was to improve serving patients and do what was best for them. HealthSource offered a lot of options to move further in that direction,” said Dr. Peck. According to EntrepreneurMagazine, HealthSource is known as the fastest growing and largest franchise in the world and was ranked as the number one business opportunity in its category, and number five in the magazine’s “Top New Franchise” category. CEO and founder Dr. Chris Tomshack launched HealthSource in April 2006 to provide a true franchise opportunity to other chiropractors, which enables them to run an efficient clinic with outstanding service to patients. HealthSource specializes in proven, systematized treatment procedures and operating protocols, while providing a unique combination of chiropractic and rehabilitative care to its patients. There are now 240 HealthSource franchises nationwide. The staff at HealthSource in Glen Carbon work side by side to achieve the common goal of treating “whole body wellness” in their patients. Spinal Decompression is one of the leading edge non-surgical and non-invasive technologies, and is a procedure that Dr. Peck believes in. Progressive Rehab is another focus that is offered and is the combination of precise chiropractic adjustments with pain relieving and stabilizing rehab therapies. This allows the addressing of muscles, joints and alignment in the same visit, offering quick relief of pain and nerve pressure. Massage therapy is an area that HealthSource places a high priority, in order to provide prevention and wellness for their patients. Prevention and tension relief are an important part of treating the whole body. If you are suffering from mild to extreme back

Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra goes blue The Blue Planet Live! set for two performances By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Believe it or not, fall is right around the corner. The good news is that signals the start of theater and symphony season. The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is once again presenting a wonderful line up, along with special events and series that are great for the entire family. SLSO Presents series returns this year with an amazing lineup of popularly oriented concerts, ranging from the magical symphonic arrangements of Walt Disney movies and the music of famed film score composer John Williams to a swing music tribute. The first concert of the SLSO Presents 2009-10 season is The Blue Planet Live! at Powell Hall on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. The SLSO will go “blue” and dive into the depths of the sea with the presentation of The Blue Planet Live! Specially-edited film sequences from the acclaimed BBC/ Discovery Channel documentary series are projected onto a giant screen as the SLSO plays the original score by Emmy Award winner George Fenton live. The breathtaking undersea footage, which involves nearly 200 filming locations and took almost five years to make, will surely stir a range of emotions. The remarkable scenes of dolphins diving, sharks hunting and whales migrating will appeal to adults and children alike. The Blue Planet Live! will be conducted by Ward Stare, the SLSO’s talented 26year-old resident conductor. The production also includes narration by St. Louis native and KMOX sports anchor Tom Ackerman, who will introduce the audience to the footage and provide interesting statistics and facts about the film sequences as well as a behind-the-scenes account of what went into the filmmaking process. This production has entertained audiences across the globe with its beautiful music, but it has also shared an environmental message so that humans can better understand and protect the wonders of the oceans by witnessing them. The Blue Planet Live! is truly a unique and dramatic presentation of Natural History. Tickets for The Blue Planet Live! are $35-$80 and are available at SLSO’s box office, online at www.slso.org, or by phone at 314-534-1700. SLSO’s Box Office is located at 718 North Grand Boulevard in Grand Center. The 2009-10 SLSO Presents Series continues with the following performances: • Swing, Swing, Swing; Guest conductor: Victor Vanacore; Guest Dancers: A Tall Order Dance Company; Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. • The Movie Music of John Williams; Conductor: David Robertson; Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. • The Magical Music of Walt Disney; Conductor: David Robertson; Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 3 at 2:00 p.m. • Bugs Bunny on Broadway; Conductor: George Daugherty; Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. For ticket prices and concert information please visit the SLSO Web site at www. slso.org or call 314-534-1700.

Music Tuning in SLSO featured in new recordings Nonesuch Records has released a recording of two works by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams, the Doctor Atomic Symphony and Guide to Strange Places, performed by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) under the direction of its Music Director, David Robertson. This is the premiere recording of both works, recorded live in 2008 at Powel Hall in St. Louis, and the first CD recording of Robertson with the SLSO. The Nonesuch recording is also available as an MP3 download. Adams’ Doctor Atomic S y m p h o n y i s d r a w n f ro m h i s opera Doctor Atomic, a modern Faust story depicting the final
hours before the detonation of the first atomic bomb. At the encouragement of Robertson, Adams adapted music from his opera into symphonic form, dedicating the completed work to Robertson. T h e N e w Yo r k T i m e s s a i d o f t h e s y m p h o n y, “ … t h e s c o re i n v i t e s y o u t o h e a r t h e music—driving passages with pounding timpani, quizzically restrained lyrical flights, bursts of skittish fanfares—on its own terms, apart from its dramatic context.” Also on the CD is Adams’ 2001 work, Guide to Strange Places. Adams has said he was inspired by a French guide book of Provence in the creation of the work. “A chapter was dedicated to paysages insolites—or ‘strange places,’”

Adams explained. “It set my i m a g i n a t i o n o ff … . I n a s e n s e , all of my pieces are travel pieces, often through paysages insolites—it’s the way I experience musical form.” The recording was made possible by a generous gift from the Centene Charitable Foundation, St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1880, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) is the second-oldest orchestra in the country and is w i d e l y c o n s i d e re d o n e o f t h e world’s finest. In September 2005, internationally acclaimed conductor David Robertson became the 12th Music Director and second American-born c o n d u c t o r i n t h e O rc h e s t r a ’ s history. Currently in the 129th season - the SLSO continues to
strive for artistic excellence, fiscal responsibility and community connection. In addition to its regular concert performances at Powell Hall, the SLSO is an integral part of the St. Louis community, presenting more than 250 free education and community partnership programs each year. In June 2008, the SLSO launched Building Our Business which takes a proactive, two-pronged approach: build audiences and re - i n v i g o r a t e t h e S L S O b r a n d making the SLSO and Powell Hall the place to be; and build the donor base for enhanced institutional commitment and donations. This is all part of a larger strategic plan adopted in May 2009 that includes new core ideology and a 10-year strategic
vision focusing on artistic and institutional excellence, doubling the existing audience, and revenue growth across all key operating areas.

“Cold Souls”
People are so preoccupied with the importance of the soul, it’s become its own cottage industry. Oprah Winfrey has devoted an entire series to the evolution of one’s soul. If yours is hungry, you can feed it chicken soup. But what if you just didn’t need yours? What if you decided one day you’d be better off without a soul and just ... had it removed? That’s the inspired and absurd premise of the feature debut from writer-director Sophie Barthes. And who better to personify such existential hand-wringing than Paul Giamatti? His bug eyes, hunched carriage and exasperated delivery suggest that he constantly bears the weight of the world on his shoulders, even in a comedy or an action picture. Here, Giamatti plays himself — or a version of himself, not unlike John Malkovich in “Being John Malkovich,” which is fitting. “Cold Souls” explores some of the same questions about identity, memory and reality that frequently arise in Charlie Kaufman’s writing. Paul is preparing to star in a production of Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” and rehearsals are vexing him. One day, his agent suggests he read an article in The New Yorker about a lab on New York’s Roosevelt Island where they extract the soul and store it until you decide you need it again — unless you’d like to try someone else’s, that is. The process is intended to alleviate worries and fears: Instead, you feel nothing at all. David Strathairn is coolly amusing as the deadpan doctor who runs the place, which looks like a day spa designed by Stanley Kubrick. RATED: PG-13 for nudity and brief strong language RUNNING TIME: 101 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“District 9”
The mysterious signs have been out there for weeks, months even: On billboards, benches and bus stops featuring crude cartoon alien drawings, they’ve warned us of non-humans, they’ve urged us to remain separate. They’re ads for the enormously buzzed-about “District 9,” and thankfully, given their ubiquity, all the hype is justified. This is one intense, intelligent, well-crafted action movie — one that dazzles the eye with seamless special effects but also makes you think without preaching. Like the excellent “Moon” from earlier this summer, “District 9” has the aesthetic trappings of science fiction but it’s really more of a character drama, an examination of how a man responds when he’s forced to confront his identity. Aliens who arrived in their spaceship more than 20 years ago have now been quarantined in cramped and dangerous slums; the nerdy bureaucrat charged with moving them to new quarters (the tremendous Sharlto Copley) is transformed in the process. What’s amazing is that this visceral yet philosophically sophisticated film is the first feature from commercial and music-video director Neill Blomkamp, who co-wrote the script with Terri Tatchell. (Peter Jackson is the big name attached to this refreshingly star-free project — he’s one of the producers.) Blomkamp set “District 9” in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was born and raised, so it’s easy

to assume his themes of racial division are a metaphor for apartheid. You could interpret it that way, but its quick bursts of violence and urban warfare also feel like a statement on Iraq. RATED: R for bloody violence and pervasive language. RUNNING TIME: 113 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard”
Enduring the soul-sucking process of buying a used car is bad enough. Watching a movie about soulless used-car salesmen is even worse — especially when it’s a comedy that strains desperately for raunchy, politically incorrect laughs. In theory, the pieces were there for something more inspired. “Chappelle’s Show” co-creator Neal Brennan directs for the first time (from a script by Andy Stock and Rick Stempson) and the large ensemble cast features Jeremy Piven, David Koechner, Ving Rhames, Ed Helms, Tony Hale and Ken Jeong. A lot of improv supposedly went on, as well, as you might expect in a movie from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions. After all, these are the people behind “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights.” But this time, except for a couple of amusing lines here and there, the results just feel flat and generally unpleasant. Every character is singularly unlikable, but beyond that, they’re drawn so one-dimensionally that they’re not even interesting. Piven, as hotshot used-car salesman Don “The Goods” Ready, is essentially doing a variation on his cocky, fast-talking Ari Gold character from “Entourage” — which is pretty much all we’ve seen him do for years now. Don is the leader of a brash crew of mercenaries (played by Koechner, Rhames and Kathryn Hahn) who are hired to travel from town to town, moving cars off flailing lots. Their latest stop is Temecula in Southern California, where they have to help sell 141 cars over the three-day July 4 weekend. RATED: R for sexual content, nudity, pervasive language and some drug material. RUNNING TIME: 90 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
“Ponyo”
If you’re 5 years old, or under the influence of some hallucinogenic drug, this movie is probably awesome. Clearly, these are the ideal scenarios in which to watch the latest animated fantasy from Japanese writer-director Hayao Miyazaki. For everyone else, though, “Ponyo” will seem beautiful but surprisingly boring: a children’s film that’s at once overly simplistic and needlessly nonsensical. The handdrawn images can be wondrous and inventive as they are in all of Miyazaki’s films, but this story of a goldfish who longs to be a little girl lacks the sophisticated depth and engaging weirdness of his most acclaimed and best-known work, such as the Oscar-winning “Spirited Away” and the Oscar-nominated
“Howl’s Moving Castle.” It feels safe — and that extends to the casting in this English-language version. Rather than playing in Japanese with subtitles, “Ponyo” comes to you with a team of all-stars voicing the characters, with Pixar Animation guru John Lasseter among the co-directors and Melissa Mathison (“E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”) writing the translated screenplay. It might have been easier to immerse ourselves in Miyazaki’s story, inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Little Mermaid,” if it featured unknown actors rather than Tina Fey, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson and Cate Blanchett. Exceedingly capable as they are, they also remind you of their stardom with every word. Meanwhile, Ponyo is voiced with girlish enthusiasm by Noah Cyrus, Miley’s younger sister, with the Jonas Brothers’ younger sibling Frankie (otherwise known as the “Bonus Jonas”) playing Sosuke, the boy she befriends on land. RATED: G. RUNNING TIME: 100 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Time Traveler’s Wife”
So let’s try and get this straight, here. Eric Bana plays a guy named Henry who can travel through time, only he can’t control where or when he goes. He also can’t control how he gets back, except for when he tries certain tricks to place himself in a state of mind to time travel. Even then there’s no way to guarantee which version of Henry will show up: the same one who left or a younger or older version of himself. The only constant seems to be that when he shows up at his destination, he’s always naked. (Somehow, Henry has found time between all his travels to hit the gym.) Hunky as he is, he’d be a frustrating guy to fall in love with, or even date. But Rachel McAdams’ character, Clare, must be made of stronger stuff than the rest of us, because not only does she tolerate Henry’s pesky inconsistency, she believes he’s her destiny, and that he has been since the first time she saw him as a precocious 6-year-old girl. Director Robert Schwentke’s film, based on the Audrey Niffenegger best-seller, breezes over the fact that Clare and Henry’s meet-cute is more like a meetcreepy. He doesn’t freak her out at all, presumably because she knows, even at this tender age, that she is cosmically meant to be with this much-older man. Maybe it’s more plausible on the written page — or maybe you just have to be a hopeless romantic, and willing to shut off the part of your brain that craves logic, to enjoy this. But strangely, in the script from Bruce Joel Rubin (an Oscar-winner for “Ghost”), the timetravel gimmick supersedes any sort of substance, depth or character development. RATED: PG-13 for thematic elements, brief disturbing images, nudity and sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 107 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Giamatti shines in “Cold Souls” By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — People a re s o p re o c c u p i e d w i t h t h e importance of the soul, it’s become its own cottage industry. David Strathairn is coolly a m u s i n g a s t h e d e a d p a n D r. Flintstein who runs the place, which looks like a day spa designed by Stanley Kubrick. As Paul examines a row of souls being held in their cylindrical glass containers, the doctor explains that “they mostly come in dark tones — blacks, browns, grays.” And so he’s understandably horrified to find when his own soul comes out
that it looks exactly like a chickpea (it’s a neat little visual gag). Barthes cuts back and forth between Paul’s story and that of a Russian woman named Nina (a confident performance from Dina Korzun), who functions as a sort of “soul mule” for a guy running a black-market operation. She takes them in on one end and has them extracted on the other; trouble is, after so many transfers, she’s got a build-
up of residue in her body. And so, like Paul — whose path will eventually cross with hers — she’s a bit mixed up about who she is herself. Katheryn Winnick is also very good as the soul merchant’s trophy wife, a notalent soap-opera star who wants the soul of an American actor (preferably Al Pacino, George Clooney or Sean Penn) to help her improve her craft. The combination of themes and visuals does make “Cold Souls” feel a little slow, but it’s also invigorating to walk out of a movie that actually makes you think — especially during this time of year.
“District 9” a late-summer treat By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The originality lacking in Hollywood is usually bandied about this time of year, explaining away recent late August releases like Snakes on a Plane and Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – neither a winner by any stretch of the imagination. 2009 has been a different kind of box office year for many reasons and the eighth month has just yielded us two more to add to the tally board. This week Disney releases their fifteenth anniversary tribute to extreme sports. As far as something different goes, I can’t believe emotive dirt bike racing, thematic skateboarding jumping, and narrative snowboarding wouldn’t take the gold medal. The 3-D X-Games: The Movie only has a one-week engagement, precluding me from reviewing it in a timely enough fashion for readers to still catch it, but I’m excited to tell you all about District 9, the other way August is different.

“District 9”
RATED: R for bloody violence and pervasive language. RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: four stars out of four.
Actively produced by the legendary Peter Jackson, District 9 is an alien apartheid story, though this phrase hasn’t existed before now. Leave it to the media to develop such buzzwords. District 9 is filmed mostly in documentary fashion, with quite a lot of its first act storytelling come from security camera footage and news chopper angles. It centers on Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copely), a cubicle drone for the fictional MNU, a Blackwater/Halliburton-style corporation,
who is tapped by his CEO father-in-law to lead the company’s next big project. The film is directed by Niell Blomkamp, based on his own Oscar-nominated short film from 2005. Wikus’s undertaking is to present eviction notices to the troubled refugees in the District 9 slum in Johannesburg. This will allow MNU to move the entire population to a new, more secure location outside the city limits. The twist on this seemingly simple exercise is that these residents are space aliens named Prawns that, despite being over seven feet tall, closely resemble briny shrimp. As the film tells us, Prawns have been in residence at District 9 since their disabled craft first appeared over the large South African city in 1982. Sickened by their journey, dying without supplies, and unable to flee, the Prawns were doomed until the United Nations hired MNU to provide for their care (at a hefty annual salary). During the evictions, Wikus is contaminated with some of the organic/electronic material that one alien, “named” Christopher Johnson, has been collecting over these last twenty
years. The oily goo is their fuel and is contained in components of the damaged ship. Johnson’s plan is to repair their sole means of transportation so he can return his son to their home world. The contamination begins a metamorphosis in Wikus and his body slowly begins to change into that of a Prawn. Alone, scared, and hunted by his own co-workers, Wikus turns to the streets of District 9, and the promise of Christopher Johnson that he can be turned back into a human, in order to stay alive in the face of total upheaval. This film is unique in its superb political undertones, unintentional humor, amazing action sequences, and unparalleled combination of live action and CGI images. Current success is being attributed to an equally unique and interactive marketing campaign. Copely, anchoring nearly every scene as the only major human character, does not disappoint with his acting debut. It’s absolutely one-of-a-kind and I couldn’t be more pleased to encourage you to race out and see it.

Travel
A day at the beach Surrounded as we are by oceans of corn and soybeans, the beach – any beach – is only slightly more accessible to most of us than the moon. Sure, we know what horseradish looks like in a field, but do we know what a horseshoe crab looks like in the water? At some point, most of us have been to the Atlantic, the Pacific or the Gulf of Mexico. We enjoyed the surf and sand, but a seashell is a seashell is a seashell. To keep you in the know when it comes to the beach, here are brief rundowns of the most common life forms you’ll encounter.
• The Ghost Crab (also known as a Sand Crab). These little guys scuttle along the beach, popping in and out of their holes. They’re called Ghost Crabs because of their ability to disappear quickly. They’re common on the east coast of Florida, but can be found in Australia as well. In the evening, they make a mad dash to the ocean to wash water over their gills so they may obtain oxygen.
• The Sand Dollar. Flat, round and quite interesting, Sand Dollars are marine animals related to sea urchins and sea stars. They live just beneath the surface in sandy areas and enjoy a diet of crustacean larvae and algae. Most of the ones you’ll find at the beach are not longer alive. If you do pick one up for your collection, brush on a mixture of white glue and water when you get home to keep it from crumbling.
• Sea Oats. Yes, they are pretty and yes, you’ll probably get fined if you get caught picking them. Sea Oats are a tall type of grass that grows along the East Coast. They thrive in the beach environment and, just as importantly, help keep the beach environment intact as their long root systems help keep soil in place. They are generally found on dunes, just before you reach the actual beach. Remember, don’t pick them.
• Conch Shells. Prized picks on any beach, Conch Shells come in a variety of sizes and colors. By the time you see them, the snail that once lived inside has departed (or died). Should you find a still-living Conch, return it to the water as in most states, it is against the law to take any living sea creature home. Conch (the meat) is served as food, fried as fritters in the Bahamas. Rumor has it that if you hold one up to your ear, you can hear the echo of the ocean.
• Brown Anoles. These lizards don’t live at the beach per se, but can be found all over the state of Florida. Try as you might, you won’t catch one. These long, slender lizards also come in a green variety. They can grow to be 8 inches long. The Brown Anole thrives in disturbed habitats, among ornamental plants and are common around buildings – which is why they seem to be everywhere outside your hotel. They’re harmless to humans and, we’re told, don’t do well outside of Florida’s climate.
• Cockle Shells. Probably the most common type of shell on the Atlantic Coast, the Cockle Shell comes in a number of colors – from brown, to calico, to gray, to white. The biggest ones are at best 5 inches across, but anything over 1 inch is probably worth picking up. Rarely will you find both halves of the same shell still together. 82-year-old Yosemite hotel getting upgrade First Clover Leaf Bank YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — The landmark A h w a h n e e H o t e l i n Yo s e m i t e National Park is due for its first major remodel and seismic upgrade since the stately Art Deco lodge opened 82 years ago. Park rangers say the Ahwahnee could use everything from new carpets to a paint job. They expect the remodel will cost millions and last years. The top-to-bottom overhaul likely will include engineering work to ensure the hotel meets modern safety standards and building codes and is accessible to people with disabilities. The National Park Service plans to release its initial assessment of the deluxe hotel’s needs this week and will send out its final plans for public comment and environmental review.
First Clover Leaf Bank has been a member of the Edwardsville Community since 1889. The celebration of their 120th Birthday this year has been a true honor. In their humble beginnings, they supported the area by making loans to the early settlers. These early roots have kept First Clover Leaf Bank deeply invested in the local communities. The bank is now a full service community bank that focuses on community, customer relationships and business partnerships.
Former Kentucky governor’s mansion opening for tours soon
Added convenience is another priority First Clover Leaf Bank strives to accomplish. One step in adding convenience is the Post Office located in the Goshen banking facility. The Post Office facility was established to help the local residents easily access postal services. Since it’s located in the lobby of the branch, you can have a cup of coffee, make a deposit and mail a letter all in the same stop. This is part of the ongoing commitment to convenience and customer needs.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The “Old Governor’s Mansion,” which has been undergoing a needed revitalization, is scheduled to open for public tours next month. The mansion, completed in 1798 and on the National Register of Historic Places, has hosted numerous dignitaries over the years, including former presidents Andrew Jackson and Theodore Roosevelt. The governor ’s office says the High Street mansion will be open for tours from Sept. 19 through Oct. 3.
Inn owner donates land to Smokies park GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) — The 86-year-old owner of the historic Gatlinburg Inn is donating 104 wooded acres to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the largest private gift to the park in a decade. Wilma Maples said she always considered the property near Cove Mountain between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg a special getaway for her and her late husband R.L. “Rellie” Maples. She says she doesn’t want it sold off to developers after she’s gone. “I get so sick of seeing midnight rentals on every hillside,” Maples told The Mountain Press. “When I die, I didn’t want the land to be sold and have the same thing happen up there. I don’t want to be part of tearing up the earth.” Smokies officials say the property could figure into a final path for the Foothills Parkway project.

Saving money – and the environment Ryobi tools can show you the way By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Sometimes companies and public relations firms send me products that they would like me to try out and, hopefully, give some publicity. Some times I like the products and I share that information with the readers. Since my mother taught me that “if I can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all,” the ones that are not so great just go away quietly. Recently I received a couple items that at first I didn’t know what to think about them or their necessity in my life. But as I read the information about these items and saw what the “new” feature was that made them different, I realized that these items are worth talking about. You may be familiar with the name Ryobi. I know that Home Depot carries a lot of Ryobi tools and products. They have come out with a “revolutionary lithium-ion battery that replaces 6,000 AA alkaline batteries” and it is rechargeable. If you are like me, I have two sons who seem to eat batteries at my house. And everything seems to need batteries. It is inevitable that when the electric goes out or my husband is under the sink hollering for a flashlight, there is never a good battery to be found. Here may be the solution. The first item I received was a Ryobi High Intensity LED Flashlight, which came with the Tek 4 4V lithiumion battery. The features read: “This flashlight offers a number of advanced features such as: ultra compact design for convenience, dust proof, water proof and
shock proof for the toughest jobs. Backed by Ryobi’s two year warranty.” This says a lot for me. On down the features information, it says that the light can withstand a six feet drop. How many times have I dropped the flashlight and had it not work because the bulb filament broke on impact. Plus the features say that there is “no need to replace bulbs over the life of flashlight.” Yippee! That is the number one reason I throw many a flashlight away. I never have a clue which bulb my flashlight takes when I go shopping and always forget to take the broken one with me to match it up. So in the trash they go. Another plus for the flashlight is that it has a belt clip on it. I have gone out for a walk at dusk and wished I had brought one with me before, or I am trying to do a job that takes three hands and the belt clip would have been very handy. Finally, environmentally speaking it is a need that is long overdue to have a battery that will last as long as 6,000 AA batteries. Imagine all the landfill space that will save, not to mention the leaking battery acid into the water tables. Ryobi has a number of other items that will also use this battery technology. Self-Leveling Plumb/Cross Laser, Professional Laser Distance Measure, Professional Digital Multimeter, Professional Infrared Thermometer, Durashot 8 MP Digital Camera, Motion Sensing Alarm with Remote, Digital Key Lock Box, Audio Plus Noise Suppression Headphones and Portable Power Source. All of these items will be available wherever Ryobi products are sold.
Clockwise from top: Professional Infared Thermometer, Professional Digital Multimeter, Audio Plus Noise Suppression Headphones and High Intensity LED Flashlight.

Americans make their gardens last By KIM COOK Associated Press Retail may be in a drought, but for many garden supply stores, it’s been a green season in more ways than one. We’re paying a lot more attention to beautifying our own backyards, perhaps because we’re traveling less. Americans are spending about 20 percent more than last year on planters, benches and outdoor accessories, according to online sales tracker CSN. That ’ s w h a t o f t e n h a p p e n s
Gloria DeMatas and Donna Bianco echo the positive assessment. They’ve done well with wind chimes, window boxes and pottery. “We’ve sold lots of cobalt blue pots. They’re so eyecatching; they stand out nicely in the garden, and all flowers look beautiful in a blue pot,” says DeMatas. Birdbaths are another brisk seller. “Right now, people are enjoying staying at home,” Bianco says. “Inside and out, they want to surround themselves with things that make them happy.” People investing the last of their discretionary cash in their gardens
probably want to enjoy them beyond the summer. Pam Brooks, president of online retrailer Arizona Pottery, likes the durability of polyresin planters, which resist the stresses of freeze and thaw and are conveniently lightweight. “They’re crack-proof, weatherproof, and will never fade like plastic,” Brooks says. A wide palette of hues, and styles ranging from classical to modern, make these a versatile choice. For something a little different, Brooks suggests Vietnamese river

Sharon Acocella, manager of Tony’s Nurseries in Larchmont, N.Y., remembers her old boss saying years ago, “Economy’s doing badly; we’d better buy heavy.” She reports that while there’s been a falloff in some categories — notably statuary and fancier items — there has been vigorous activity on other fronts. “Blue and black glazed pots are more popular than ever,” she says. “We’ve re-ordered those, and many of our square and rectangular containers, too.” Next door at Larchmont Nurseries,

Summer sippin’ There’s still time to brew up some delicious drinks By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge We may not of exactly had the dog days of summer this year, but there is still time for those hot days to make their presence felt before fall. Whether you are hosting a party, a family get together or just sitting out on the patio sipping a fun drink, it is always fun to have something different in your glass. Following are some great beverage recipes, some with a little “kick” to them and some without. Take a little time and try one or two before you need to think about hot cocoa! Mock Sangria Makes: 10 (about 6-ounce) servings Start to Finish: 15 minutes Ingredients 2 cups orange juice, chilled 1 cup unsweetened white grape juice, chilled 1 cup reduced-calorie cranberry juice
1 1-liter bottle diet lemon-lime carbonated beverage, chilled Ice cubes 2 cups assorted fresh fruit (such as oranges, cut into wedges; thinly sliced and halved lemons and/or limes; pineapple wedges; seedless red or green grapes; sliced, peeled and pitted peaches; and halved strawberries) Fresh mint sprigs Directions 1. In a large bowl or pitcher, stir together chilled orange juice, white grape juice, and cranberry juice. 2. Add the lemon-lime beverage; stir gently. Fill each of 10 glasses about two-thirds full with ice. Divide fruit among glasses. Pour juice mixture into glasses. Garnish with fresh mint sprigs. Makes 10 (about 6-ounce) servings. From BHG.com Summer Dew Ingredients 1 part Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey 6 large mint leaves 1 scoop of sugar Splash of water Directions: Muddle mint leaves, sugar and water. Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also.
Stop In After School!
Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts, but Bobby’s has a following in Madison County that most people know. Great custard, great carmel apples, lots of selections and more. Strawanna and the Bobby’s Turtle are some of the favorite selections. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover! St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars
OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings.
Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up. They really are “freaky fast!” Big Daddy’s
Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Northside Dairy Haven Edwardsville 4 stars This seasonal drive-in has been part of the Edwardsville landscape for nearly 50 years. Still famous for their Charco Burger, they also have an array of other sandwiches and barbecue plate specials. The prices cannot be beat!
Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it! Dining Delights Many cooks get reacquainted with the kitchen Wi t h h o u s e h o l d s w a t c h i n g every penny, a growing number of Americans are ditching their takeout menus and heading into the kitchen to cook dinner at home. The trouble is, many don't know how. "We h a v e f o rg o t t e n h o w t o cook," says author Mollie Katzen, best known for "The Moosewood Cookbook." As families learned to rely on dialing for pizza, they stopped being able to bake their own. Now, lots of people want to save money but can't even make eggs, she says. We've become a nation of inexperienced but newly determined cooks, and that has given cookbook authors and publishers a promising new niche. After years of cookbooks that ranged from pretentious celebrity chef volumes to glossy tributes to cupcakes, the latest trend embraces Cooking 101 — books that take readers back to the basics. This fall, British chef Jamie Oliver releases "Jamie's Food Revolution," which teaches basic techniques that save money and produce healthier eating habits. And Katzen will roll out "Get Cooking," the first in a series of books that targets beginning cooks with straightforward recipes for soups, pasta, chicken and burgers. These new offerings follow last fall's "Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics" by television chef Ina Garten and "Martha Stewart's Cooking School" by Martha Stewart. Garten's book was the top seller and Stewart's was in the top five, says Kathryn Popoff, vice president of trade books for bookseller Borders Group, Inc. Books such as New York Times' columnist Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" and "Cooking Know-How," by Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough also populate the growing genre. D o r o t h y H a r r, a 4 1 - y e a r old marketing executive from Centerville, Va., is among the more than 40 percent of people surveyed by Worthington, Ohiobased consumer research firm B I G re s e a rc h w h o s a y t h e y ' re cutting back on dinners out. But her limited skills mean her family doesn't eat much variety. "I tend to cook the same thing over and over and it gets really boring," she says. She's hoping a brush-up of the basics will change that. Basic cookbooks have long been a staple of the cookbook industry. Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" walked Americans through Gallic cuisine. Fannie Farmer taught home cooks how to measure properly. "The Joy of Cooking" introduced asparagus

and how to handle it. What has changed is the level of knowledge — or, perhaps, ignorance — these new books assume. Katzen is amazed at the level of skills. "The questions I get are so basic 'Should I buy the frozen spinach or the fresh,' 'I'd like to make an omelet, how do I do that?' I thought it was obvious, but it's not." Culinary historians say America's migration from the stove began sometime after World War II, when more women moved into the workforce and the makers of packaged foods began casting cooking as drudgery to be dispensed with quickly. Our skills eroded through the 1960s, '70s, and '80s as families worked more and ate fewer meals together. Now the average home cook's knowledge has declined so thoroughly that The Betty Crocker Kitchens Stylebook, which is used for recipes and package directions, has simplified some of its terms. For instance, modern cooks are
instructed to "beat" sugar and butter together rather than "cream" it (the instruction of yesteryear), cookbooks manager Lois Tlusty said in an e-mail. At the same time, people began to eat out more. Not just hamburgers, but high-end fare at restaurants presided over by culinary luminaries. Chefs became celebrities and food-driven media like specialized magazines and the Food Network helped make contemporary diners more sophisticated than ever — at least on the surface. "People want to throw around terms like 'jus' or 'coulis,'" says Anne Mendelson, a culinary historian and contributing editor at Gourmet magazine. "Some people say we're getting more sophisticated. But then you look at the cookbooks meant to teach people to cook and you hear horror stories of the trouble ordinary people have using those books." Cookbooks are only part of the effort to help Americans get comfortable in the kitchen again.
to improvise — that is, cook with confidence. "How do you teach such a special skill?" says Kopsidas. "You can show people, look, there are two or three ways that we tend to cook things like vegetables, and then give them a few recipes to use as a foundation." But some culinary observers worry a whole shelf of books on cooking 101 won't help a culture that has moved so far from the kitchen. "We've fallen into the hands of other people making our food for us," Mendelson says. "And I don't know if there's any road back from that." B r u c e We i n s t e i n a n d M a r k Scarbrough take an unconventional, yet intuitive approach to cooking in their recent cookbook, "Cooking Know-How." They focus on basic techniques and recipe styles, then suggest using them with different ingredients to produce a variety of dishes. In this case, they offer a simple approach to bouillabaisse, a seafood stew.
Many beginning cooks seem to want more instruction than a book can reasonably offer, giving rise to cooking schools. Roughly 350 cooking schools can be found across the country, says Stephan Hengst, spokesman for the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., up from just over 200 a decade ago. In 2007, the latest year for which figures are available, more than 62,000 students were enrolled. "People realize that at the core of it, they never really learned to cook to begin with," Hengst says. "With the rise of Whole Foods and farmers' markets people are discovering ingredients that they're completely unfamiliar with and they want to know what to do with them." At Sterling, Va.-based Cookology, where timid cook Harr has taken more than a half-dozen classes, owner Maria Kopsidas even offers a farmers' market class based on what cooks might find at their local markets. But she also recognized the need to teach these same cooks
