People

Love really does conquers all Local author’s passion pays off By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge Edwardsville’s Megan Kelly is not wishing for her dreams to come true anymore, because, well, most of them have come true. Kelly is a Harlequin Romance author. Her first book was published in 2007 and soon a second followed. “The Fake Fiancee” and “Marring the Boss” were released by Harlequin American Romance in 2008. Now, Kelly said she has two more books coming out in 2011. Kelly did not have a fairy god mother waive a magic wand nor did she win the lottery, but rather she took the hard way – the old fashion way – she never gave up. Kelly said she always knew what she wanted to be when she was growing up. “Since I was young, I knew I wanted to be a writer,” Kelly said. But she said her desire to become a Harlequin Romance author did not sprout until she was a teenager. She said on a trip to her grandmother's house, they were on a bus when she spotted a Harlequin Romance that had been abandoned. Kelly said her grandmother immediately told her she had to review the book before she could see it. “She said it was about lions,” Kelly said. “And handed me the book.” Kelly said, with a chuckle, that the book opened with a home with lion statues outside. Soon, Kelly, an avid reader, read a lot of Harlequin Romance books, but she was not content. “I was dissatisfied with the endings,” Kelly said. “I knew I could do a better story than that.” Kelly, originally from Granite City, moved to Edwardsville, graduated from SIUE, got married and had children. But it was not until later, after having a family and meeting a group of fellow writers at the l o c a l chapter of the Romance Writers of America ( M O R WA ) did her drive to get published blossom. “I would not be published if it wasn’t for my g ro u p , ” K e l l y said. Kelly said writing takes a lot of time and dedication. As a wife and mother of two, she said her family was supportive, especially

September 2, 2010

her husband. “He is the most supportive person in the world,” Kelly said. On nights when she had MORWA meetings, Kelly said he would watch the kids. Between MORWA and her family’s support, Kelly said she never gave up. “I continued to write even though I did not sell,” Kelly said. After 13 years of hard work and dedication, Kelly said she got her big break in March 2007. “It finally happened,” Kelly said. “March 1, 2007.” Soon after her first book was released by Harlequin American Romance, the second one followed, “The Fake Fiancee” and then “Marring the Boss.” Now, two more of Kelly’s books are coming out in 2011. Her first two books were well received too. “Marring the Boss” was nominated by readers as the best book by a new author by “RT (Romantic Times) Book Reviews.” “That meant a lot to me,” Kelly said. Now that book is also set to be released internationally. Kelly said it will be available in Spain next June. And obviously, Kelly is thrilled. She loves her family and loves being able to write. “I like happy endings,” Kelly said. Kelly said she tries to make her books all have happy endings. “Positive things,” Kelly said. “They make me feel good.” In addition, Kelly said she does believe in love too. “I have been married for 25 years and I wanted to share it.” So, it does appear Kelly is not only writing happy endings, but living them too. Kelly did have some advice for other writers with aspirations to become published. She encouraged them to never give up and get involved with organizations like MORWA, which are filled with writers to offer support, encouragement and advice. Kelly’s newest books will be available in stores and online once they are released in 2011. Her first two books are still available electronically via www.eharlequin.com. Missouri’s state parks 10 parks in 10 days

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge When my kids were young, we were always searching for fun things to do that cost little or no money. Every Sunday after c hu rch , we wo u ld e it he r ha v e a picnic lunch ready or we would pick up some fast food that was inexpensive and we would go to a different park and just explore. We had some really great times doing that. Things aren’t so different now, except my kids are older and have their own schedules, but the money issue is still at hand. So every once in a while we seek out a new park to take in. Maybe you have some vacation left to take and are wondering what adventurous idea you can come up with or maybe, like my family, you need a family friendly event for a weekend outing and need a real value. You can’t find a much better value than the state parks. Vi s i t i n g 1 0 M i s s o u r i S t a t e P a r k s i n 10 days is an ambitious adventure that highlights the best of the Missouri Ozarks, from mountaintops to river valleys, with a few wineries in between. Maybe you don’t have 10 consecutive days, but you could plan 10 Saturdays or 10 Sundays, or every other week. Whatever works

for you, here is a plan for 10 parks that will fill 10 days of fun and they are right across the river too! T h e schedule has plenty of built in downtime to soak in a sparkling stream and to explore the subterranean treasures of the Cave State. The adventure starts in one of Missouri’s most beautiful landscapes, Hawn State Park near Ste. Genevieve. The park is home to the 10-mile Whispering Pine Trail. Give those feet a break by dipping your toes into picturesque Pickle Creek, a designated natural area. From Hawn, the first overnight, if you choose, could be in a cozy cabin at Sam A. Baker State Park, which is south of Hawn. The next day take one of Missouri’s most challenging hikes, the 12mile Mudlick Trail, which climbs to a mountaintop for a taste of wilderness. Or, you could take a leisurely stroll back on the Shut-Ins Trail and spend the day lolling in the deep pool below the bluff. Day 3 can be spent roaming over the giant formations at Elephant Rocks State Park and standing on the state’s highest point at Taum Sauk Mountain State Park. A two-night stay at the new camper cabins or campground at Johnson’s ShutIns State Park leaves a full day to enjoy the park’s namesake – a playground of

chutes, pools and spires carved in the ancient purple rock by the Black River. On Day 5, go early to Montauk State Park for a little trout fishing. If you like, spend a night or two at the park’s lodge. You can even float the spring-fed Current R i v e r, w h i c h b e g i n s i n t h e p a r k . T h e stretch from Cedar Grove to Akers passes Welch Spring, which pumps 105 million gallons of crystalline water into the river each day. Leaving Montauk, go underground at Onondaga Cave State Park to see one of America’s most spectacular caves, then head to Meramec State Park, which is home to impressive Fisher Cave, one of the more than 40 caves in the park. Meramec Caverns also offers cabins, nestled under towering oaks. The day could be spent floating the Meramec River or hiking. From Meramec, the adventure continues at Hermann, on the Missouri River in wine country. Day 9, bike a section of Katy Trail State Park, the nation’s longest rail-to-trail conversion. Check into one of the many bed and breakfasts and spend an evening sampling German wines and food in Hermann. Head east on Day 10 to Castlewood State Park near St. Louis, where the River Scene Trail offers the biggest bang for the buck, ending with a panoramic view from the bluffs overlooking the Meramec River Valley. The natural beauty of these state parks offer not only a beautiful back drop to

create family memories, but they have a wealth of wildlife, activities, trails and just fun for all. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ State Parks Division has divided the state into six regions: Kansas City, Northeast, Central, St. Louis, Lakes and Southeast. Take it one region at a time; add another element to the idea and visit them all by theme. Here are a few themes to get the mind going: Famous Faces. This theme could include the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio State Historic Site in Kansas City; Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood State Historic Site in Laclede; Florida is home to the Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site; the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site is in St. Louis; and the Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site is in Ash Grove. Natural attractions could be another theme. Start in the Southeast Region at Taum Sauk Mountain State Park in Ironton; Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park near Lesterville and Elephant Rocks State Park near Ironton; and Missouri’s “Little Grand Canyon” at Grand Gulf State Park in Thayer. Whether you visit one or all, Missouri State Parks or Historic Sites will offer something of interest to the entire family. For information on Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, go to www.VisitMO. com or call 800-519-4800 for your free Official Missouri Travel Guide.

Elephant Rocks State Park, above, offers a natural playground for young and old with the huge rock formations. The beautiful waters of Johnson Shut-ins, at left, bring visitors from all over to either wade, swim or just enjoy the beautiful scenery. Photos for The Edge.

American Airlines to charge for front-row seats NEW YORK (AP) — American Airlines has found another fee. The Fort Worth, Texas, airline s a i d We d n e s d a y i t ’ s n o w charging between $19 and $39 for “Express Seats” — those spots in the first few rows of coach that include bulkhead seats. American said the price of the seats includes getting on the plane in the first “general boarding” group of passengers. The seats that will cost extra are in the first two or three rows of the coach cabin, depending on

the size of the plane. Anne Banas, executive editor o f S m a r t e r Tr a v e l . c o m , t h i n k s passengers will see more packaged fees like this in the future — where benefits like free standby or boarding perks are included. The carrier, which is operated by parent AMR Corp., is following in the footsteps of several other airlines who already charge for special seats. UA L C o r p . ’ s U n i t e d A i r l i n e s , Continental Airlines, US Airways, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit and AirTran all have some seats that cost extra. The American seats don’t give passengers much extra for their money, said Steven Hall of CompareAirlineFees.com. Most of the other airlines’ premium seats offer more legroom. But it is a benefit for passengers to be among the first to board the plane, he added. The seats on American can only be bought at airport kiosks between 24 hours to 50 minutes before the flight for travel within the U.S. American, the country’s s e c o n d - l a rg e s t a i r l i n e b e h i n d Delta Air Lines, still provides its elite frequent fliers those seats for no extra charge. On Tuesday, AirTran raised its fee for the first checked bag by

$5 to $20 for travel starting in September. The cost is now on par with bigger airlines. U.S. airlines collected about $1.9 billion from fees in the first quarter, the most recent period for which data is available from the Transportation Department. Muslim employee: Disney banned her head scarf ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — A Muslim woman who works as a hostess at a Disneyland re s t a u r a n t a l l e g e d t h e t h e m e park would not allow her to a p p e a r i n f ro n t o f c u s t o m e r s while wearing her head scarf. Imane Boudlal, 26, appeared outside the resort’s Grand Californian Hotel after filing a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She said when she wore the hijab to work Sunday, her supervisors told her to remove it, work where customers couldn’t see her, or go home. Boudlal, who wore the scarf in observance of Ramadan, chose to go home but reported to work for the next two days and was told the same thing. “Miss Boudlal has effectively understood that they’re not i n t e re s t e d i n a c c o m m o d a t i n g her request either in timing or good faith,” said Ameena Qazi,

an attorney from the Council on American-Islamic Relations who is consulting with Boudlal. Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said Disney has a policy not to discriminate. T h e re s o r t o ff e re d B o u d l a l a chance to work with the head covering away from customers while Disneyland tries to find a compromise that would allow Boudlal to cover her head in a way that fits with her hostess uniform, Brown said. “ Ty p i c a l l y, s o m e b o d y i n an on-stage position like hers wouldn’t wear something like that, that’s not part of the costume,” Brown said. “We were trying to accommodate her with a backstage position that would allow her to work. We gave her a couple of different options and she chose not to take those and to go home.” Boudlal, who is a native of Morocco, has worked at the Storyteller restaurant at the hotel for 2 1/2 years but only realized she could wear her hijab to work after studying for her U.S. citizenship exam in June, Qazi said. She asked her supervisors if she could wear the scarf and was told they would consult with the corporate office, Qazi said. Boudlal didn’t hear

anything for two months and was then told she could wear a head scarf, but it had to be designed by Disneyland’s costume department to comply with the Disney look, Qazi said. She was fitted for a Disneysupplied head scarf but was not given a date when the garment would be finished and was told she couldn’t wear her own hijab in the interim. Boudlal wore her own hijab to work for the first time Sunday. “After these two months and t h i s c o m p l i c a t e d p ro c e s s , s h e decided to come forward,” Qazi said. “She really wanted to be able to wear it on Ramadan.” Boudlal has the support of her union, which has been in a bitter fight for months with Disneyland over an expired contract for hotel workers. Brown accused the union of distorting the facts in Boudlal’s c a s e t o d i s t r a c t f ro m t h e k e y issues in the contract fight. Leigh Shelton, a spokeswoman for the union, said Boudlal’s coming forward now had nothing to do with the negotiations. “There’s absolutely no correlation,” said Shelton, who’s with Unite Here Local 11.

Classic vs. contemporary, emerging vs. established, traditional vs. cutting-edge. Every year, the Edison OVATIONS Series manages to bridge these supposed dichotomies with groundbreaking presentations by some of today’s most critically acclaimed performing artists. For its 2010-11 season, Edison will host a range of innovative events, from Philip Glass’ modern take on Antonio Vivaldi to fresh explorations of Irish and Native American traditions to uproarious re-conceptions of works by William Shakespeare and Mary Shelley. “The classics are not corrupted, although they are in some cases dissected and re-imagined,” says Charlie Robin, director of Edison. “The intent is not to improve upon but rather to reinterpret with a contemporary mindset that speaks to an audience affected by technological advances and shifting social mores. “It’s about tweaking tradition,” Robin says. The OVATIONS Series will open Oct. 1 and 2 with Rulan

Tangen and Dancing Earth in Of Bodies of Elements, an evening-length concert exploring the complex relationship between humanity and nature. Founded by Tangen in 2004, this up-and-coming company fuses indigenous and contemporary styles, exploring both the cultural heritage and the present-day identities of Native peoples. The series will continue Oct. 15 with The Seasons Project, a collaboration between celebrated violinist Robert McDuffie and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. The program will feature Philip Glass’ new Concerto No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra, The American Four Seasons — which was written for McDuffie — along with its inspiration: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Next up, Chicago sensations 500 Clown will tackle a pair of literary classics with 500 Clown Macbeth (Nov. 5) and 500 Clown Frankenstein (Nov. 6). Pluck, the world’s funniest string trio, will present Musical Arson, their slapstick spoof of concert hall decorum, Nov. 19. The spring semester will begin with a special event, as Edison joins forces with Metro Theatre Company, St. Louis’ foremost professional troupe for young people, for a new

production of The Giver, Eric Coble’s celebrated adaptation of the Newbery Medal Award-winning science fiction book by Lois Lowry. Performances, recommended for ages 10 and up, The OVATIONS Series will resume March 5 with a concert by Danú, one of today’s leading traditional Irish ensembles. The Trey McIntyre Project, which both challenges and expands the vocabulary of traditional ballet, will return to Edison April 1 and 2. Also returning, April 15 and 16, will be cuttingedge poetry collective Universes with Ameriville Unplugged, a passionate “State of the Union Address” set against the backdrop of post-Katrina New Orleans. Tickets to OVATIONS events are $35, or $30 for seniors, $25 for Washington University faculty and staff and $20 for students and children. Subscriptions are available at the basic level (three, four or five events at $30 per ticket) and at the premiere level (six or more events at $25 per ticket). ovations for young people events are $12; subscription are available at $8 per ticket. Tickets to The Giver are $16, or $12 for students, seniors and Washington University faculty and staff.

Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, this romantic comedy has since been adapted for both film and television and takes audiences everywhere on a laugh-filled adventure. Written by true masters of comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You” is a light-hearted story filled with crazy antics about a truly idiosyncratic family trying to be on their best behavior when their “normal” daughter ’s boyfriend and parents come over for dinner. The story begins when Alice Sycamore announces to her eccentric family that she is in love with Tony, the son of a rather rich and conservative family – the polar opposite of the Sycamores. Worried that her father ’s snake collection and sister ’s deep aspiration to become a ballerina, despite her uncanny inability to dance, will embarrass her,

Alice attempts to get her family to act as normal as possible. When Alice finally invites Tony and his parents over to her quirky family’s house for dinner, lively and noisy events take place, inevitably leading to exploding fireworks and a hilarious mess! “You Can’t Take It With You” showcases the inherent differences in people, teaches us lessons about life and family, and is sure to captivate audiences of all ages! The cast of “You Can’t Take It With You” at The Rep is Tony Campisi as Paul Sycamore, Stephanie Cozart as Essie, Benjamin Eakeley as Tony, Jeffrey Hayenga as Mr. Kirby, Joneal Joplin as Martin Vanderhof, Barbara Kingsley as Mrs. Kirby/Grand Duchess, Jamie LaVerdiere as Ed, Todd Lawson as Henderson/Man, Rachel Leslie as Rheba, Anderson Matthews as Boris Kohlenkov, Amelia McClain as Alice, Scott Schafer as Mr. De Pinna, Carol Schultz as Penny, Susie Wall as Gay Wellington, and Scott Whitehurst as Donald. Haochen Zhang Piano virtuoso to open Arts & Issues series By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Every four years since 1962, t h e Va n C l i b u r n F o u n d a t i o n h a s h o s t e d t h e Va n C l i b u r n International Piano Competition in search of the world’s best virtuosic p i a n i s t s . T h e l a t e s t p ro d i g y to emerge from the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009 is gold medal winner Haochen Zhang. Zhang kicks off the SIUE’s 201011 Arts & Issues Series when he takes the Dunham Hall Theater stage at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 10. Seating is limited. The youngest participant in the Van Cliburn competition at 19, Haochen Zhang (pronounced How-shen Jhang) was previously recognized for his prodigious talent as the youngest winner of the 2007 China International Piano Competition when he was just 17 years old. Zhang tied for first place honors with Japan’s Nobuyuki Tsujii in the Van Cliburn competition and a part of the prize for winning was three years of managed concert tours performing in hundreds of venues across the U.S. and abroad as well as extensive media exposure. Zhang has since been in high demand worldwide for orchestral and recital engagements. He launched his first year as a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medalist with prestigious engagements, including the Aspen Summer M u s i c F e s t i v a l a n d A c a d e m y, the Washington Performing Arts Society, and as part of Carnegie Hall’s “Ancient Paths, Modern Voices: A Festival Celebrating Chinese Culture.” He also made a triumphant return to his native China as soloist at the Beijing Music Festival in the winter of 2009. In the summer of 2010, Zhang celebrated his Cliburn win in a gala event featuring all three medalists of the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition with the National Orchestra of the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo. In June 2010 he opened the summer season at the Mann Center for Performing Arts in Philadelphia, performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, O p . 23 wi th the Philadelphia Orchestra, under the baton of Rossen Milanov. He also made

September 2, 2010

his New York City recital debut at Avery Fisher Hall as part of the Lincoln Center ’s Mostly Mozart Festival in July. Critics have described Zhang as having “impeccable skill” and a “depth of musical understanding and subtle expressive nuance.” Scott Cantrell of The Dallas Morning News noted that Zhang “demonstrated a musical maturity almost unimaginable in one so young,” and the San Diego Arts raved that “His style is lean and clean, the clarity of his runs, arpeggios, parallel thirds, and trills absolutely frightening to anyone who’s ever taken piano lessons. The scales and turns in Mozart were bright and light, C major scintillations that dazzled the listener.” Highlights of Zhang’s 20102011 season include solo recitals with the Gilmore Rising Stars Recital Series in Michigan, the Celebrity Series in Boston, and the Cliburn Concerts series in Texas. Zhang will also appear with the acclaimed Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv, performing Rachmaninoff ’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30 with Maestro Roberto Abbado, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Nicholas Milton. Other engagements will take him across all regions of the United States, as well as Asia and Europe, in solo recitals and appearances with orchestras such as the Krakow Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, and Kansas City Symphony Orchestra. Zhang’s Cliburn Competition performances of Stravinsky’s “ Tr o i s m o u v e m e n t s d e Pétrouchka;” Chopin’s Twentyfour Preludes, Op. 28; Mason Bates’ “White Lies for Lomax;” and Liszt’s “Spanish Rhapsody” were recently released by harmonia mundi. His complete competition performances are available at Cliburn.tv. Zhang has a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity that is nurtured through his continuing studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Gary Graffman. His early training was at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and in 2001 at the age of 11, he was admitted to the Shenzhen Arts School, where he studied under Professor Dan Zhaoyi. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“Eat Pray Love”

This does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. Yet it also offers sufficient emotional heft and self-discovery that it’ll make people feel as if they’ve actually learned something and, perhaps, emerged as better people solely through osmosis. It’s easy to see why Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir became an international phenomenon, even without help from Oprah. Everyone’s looking for something — for answers, for their true and higher purpose — and Gilbert had the fortitude (and the wherewithal) to take off alone on a journey around the world to find herself after her divorce. Having Julia Roberts star as Liz Gilbert in the film version of the best-seller, in theory, only makes it more appealing to an even wider audience. Roberts is radiant as ever, and director and co-writer Ryan Murphy’s adaptation allows her to show off her full range with plenty of hardcore hanky moments. It’s overlong and it wraps up with the kind of romantic comedy cliches that, for the most part, were absent from the first two-thirds. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, though, it’ll make you want to head out for wine and pasta with your girlfriends afterward. Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco star as the various loves of her life. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity. RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Lottery Ticket”

The odds of winning the lottery are what, like, 1 in 175 million? The laughs aren’t quite so hard to come by here, but they’re not a safe bet, either. The feature debut from longtime music video director Erik White, which he co-wrote with Abdul Williams, starts out amiably enough, with a shaggy, shambling vibe. But it eventually devolves into a weirdly violent streak, followed by some seriously heavy-handed sentimentality. Still, the ensemble cast manages to keep things sporadically enjoyable. Rapper-actor Bow Wow is all grown up here as Kevin, a recent high school graduate who’s stuck working at Foot Locker but dreams of creating his own shoe line. “Lottery Ticket” is at its strongest off the top, as Kevin tries to make his way to work at the mall one morning but keeps getting delayed by the random neighbors in his Atlanta housing project. Brandon T. Jackson has a loose, easy energy about him and gets many of the best lines. But when Kevin

plays the lottery and wins the $370 million jackpot, everything changes, with people cozying up to him or trying to kill him because he’s now a rich man. And because he wins over the extended July 4 weekend, he must wait three days to cash in. Loretta Devine, Naturi Naughton and Ice Cube co-star. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, language including a drug reference, some violence and brief underage drinking. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Piranha 3D”

Mere words cannot describe how awesomely gnarly this is, how hugely entertaining, and how urgently you must get yourself to the theater to see it. This is not a joke, by the way. This movie is a complete blast. To borrow a phrase from the kind of B-horror flicks to which “Piranha 3D” is such an effective homage: Run, don’t walk. Like “Snakes on a Plane,” which came out in the dead of summer four years ago, “Piranha 3D” knows exactly what it is and does exactly what it should do. It’s about piranhas ... in 3-D. It’s cleverly knowing without collapsing into parody. It makes great use of its extremely random cast, including Elisabeth Shue in an unusually bad-ass role as a sheriff, Ving Rhames as her deputy and Jerry O’Connell as a Joe Francis type. Christopher Lloyd has one great scene in full-on, crazed Christopher Lloyd mode as the resident fish expert. The second you see Eli Roth — playing the emcee at a wet T-shirt contest, no less — you know some hideous fate will befall him. And then there’s Richard Dreyfuss, who makes a very cute cameo off the top. That’s all we’ll say. But the whole point of this kind of movie is the gore, and French director Alexandre Aja finds hilarious and creative ways to kill off his characters — drunk, horny college kids who’ve descended on a lake for spring break. RATED: R for sequences of strong bloody horror, violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language, and some drug use. RUNNING TIME: 82 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“The Switch”

Not a single moment rings true in “The Switch,” which is unfortunate because it’s actually about a situation in which a lot of women find themselves. Jennifer Aniston’s character, Kassie, is a single, 40-year-old New York TV producer who

wants to have a baby but doesn’t want to wait around for a man — or worse yet, the wrong man — to make that happen. So she turns to a sperm donor, only to have her longtime best friend, the uptight stock trader Wally (Jason Bateman), switch the specimens in a drunken stupor. Why, you may be wondering, does Wally even have access to the cup that contains the makings of Kassie’s future child? Because the whole deal is going down at an insemination party thrown by the movie’s obligatory wacky best friend (Juliette Lewis), complete with jokey turkey basters. Like most situations — and like the similarly hokey “The Back-up Plan” from earlier this year, starring Jennifer Lopez — this one is played in broad, sitcommy fashion, utterly divorced from the way people behave in real life. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic content, sexual material including dialogue, some nudity, drug use and language. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

“The Tillman Story”

Pat Tillman was many things to many people: a son, brother, husband, friend and, as a player for Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals, a football star who drew cheers for his exciting, physical style. But once he gave up his NFL career to join the Army Rangers in 2002 and then was fatally shot in Afghanistan in 2004, he became something else entirely, something larger than life through his death: a symbol of American patriotism, a poster boy, a crucial part of the government’s message. And that turned him into something he wasn’t. “The Tillman Story” attempts to get to the bottom of what happened the day he was killed by following the exhaustive investigative efforts of Tillman’s family — namely, his mother, Dannie — and, in the process, allows us to get to know who the man himself really was. Director Amir Bar-Lev, whose previous documentaries include the smart, suspenseful “My Kid Could Paint That,” approaches “The Tillman Story” as a bit of a mystery, as well. Tension builds as details emerge and the disparity between lie and truth becomes more glaringly obvious. Not all of this is new. Books have been written on the subject since Tillman’s death, including one by his mother. But Bar-Lev thoroughly and methodically lays it all out and lets the information speak for itself. RATED: R for language. RUNNING TIME: 94 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

Movies “Animal Kingdom” an intense thriller By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press We know we’re in for a different kind of family values early in “Animal Kingdom” — right off the top, actually — as we watch a teenager sitting next to his passedout mother on the couch while some inane game show blares on the television in the background. It’s only when the paramedics arrive at their shabby apartment that we realize she’s dead from a heroin overdose, and yet the boy’s expression remains stoic throughout. This development will force Joshua “J” Cody (James Frecheville) into a life with the relatives he never really knew — relatives his mother tried to keep him away from because they were even more screwed up than she was. Now, this 17-year-old must find his place among them, even though he’s clearly in over his head from the start. Wa t c h i n g t h i s s m a l l - t i m e Melbourne crime family unravel under the weight of their overconfidence is riveting, as Australian writer-director David Michod takes his time methodically detailing their self-destruction. The combination of steady pacing, intimate cinematography and startling performances will leave you feeling tense throughout “Animal Kingdom” and probably for a while afterward. It’s such a stripped-down, assured little thriller, you’d never know it was Michod’s feature debut. Upon his mother ’s death, J reaches out to his grandmother, a diminutive, doting blonde known as

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by Sony Pictures Classics, Jacki Weaver, left, and Joel Edgerton are shown in a scene from “Animal Kingdom.” Smurf (Jacki Weaver), who lovingly takes him into the fold. This consists of her three grown sons and their close friend and fellow partner in crime. They’re into petty stuff and violent stuff — drugs, whatever they can get away with — and while the police are after them, they’re not much more scrupulous. The rules are there are no rules, as Michod presents a seemingly sedate suburbia that’s actually percolating

with bloody retribution. The leader of the family is Pope (Ben Mendelsohn), who’s in hiding at the film’s start but, once he shows up, he wastes no time reestablishing himself as the alpha dog. Craig (Sullivan Stapleton) is the speed freak and drug dealer — volatile and frequently shirtless to show off his array of tattoos. Darren (Luke Ford) is the passive youngest brother, who does what he’s told

when he’s not smoking pot. Pope’s best friend, Baz (Joel Edgerton), is the most levelheaded one among the crew; he also has the most normal life, with a wife and baby at home. He seems like such a good guy, he makes you wonder why he’s bothering with these crooks who are also unpredictably dangerous — and not quite as smart as they think they are. As back-and-forth attacks with

the police heat up, J inevitably gets sucked into the family’s criminal doings. His girlfriend, Nicky (Laura Wheelwright), also finds herself at risk. The one detective with enough brains and spine to try and stop the madness, played intelligently as always by Guy Pearce, can’t single-handedly end such pervasive corruption.

“Piranha 3-D” doesn’t need a sequel By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The recent advent of digital 3-D technology has taught us that the format, at time both a throwback to a different age and the dawn of a new age, is not created equally across all genres. It seems tailor-made for animation. Indeed, the eye-popping visuals of Avatar (in strictly-limited re-release with eight additional minutes of footage this week) or the shocking realism behind “Toy Story 3” make a crisp image pop. Conversely, live action has been a less successful venture for 3-D. Unless filmed directly as a 3-D formatted picture (like “Avatar”), the effects are left to the mercy of a retro-fitting process that doesn’t gel with some fans. They might be a tad defensive here; personally, I find the red face flaw of live characters far more disturbing. Either way, “Piranha

3-D” is going to leave a sour taste in your mouth. For a movie designed to be fun, it’s little enjoyment whatsoever. Much like exploitation Piranha films of yesteryear, films that launched the careers of Joe Dante and James Cameron, this iteration of the franchise does nothing but exploit its qualities. And, yes, most are profane, objectionable, unbelievable, and silly. When Spring Break comes to the Southwest’s lovely Lake Victoria so too does the litter of college students, the litter of debauchery, and t he litter of, well, litter. The lake is full of party-hearty boys and girls who apparently have very short-term memory. Alcohol only can’t erase the memories of the bad decisions we see here. Sheriff Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her deputies (including Ving Rhames) have their hands full keeping law and order, peace, and

decency. Coupling their already hectic problem is the emergence of cannibalistic killer fish from the piranha family. The species comes to the surface after a movie-starting earthquake opens a subaquarian cavern beneath the placid blue lake. The fish themselves are a mass of fury, but the design is only seen briefly in any detail. They look like demon creations from a schlock-master designer who loves horror films and the graphics of his classic NES. The main plot is a rescue mission to save Sarah’s three children from their slowly sinking boat in a secluded cove where happenstance puts them at anchor with a sleazy “Girls Gone Wild” type director (Jerry O’Connell) and his bevy of ladies. Such horrible things occur in this movie that I winced several times. A coed’s hair, tangled on a boat motor, pulls the skin from her head and

neck leaving a bloody, bare skull, for instance. Couple this mess with its silly plot, including a secondary part involving NBC’s Parks and Recreation actor Adam Scott, and two wasted cameos by Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss, and you’ve got a real flop that couldn’t find its way to the top of the box office list with a compass or a star chart. Such over the top antics are exactly

what this genre and the 3D format where originally created, but I think they should move on and find something better. No more, please. ••• “Piranha 3D” runs 84 minutes and is rated R for strong, graphic violence, gore, language, nudity, sexual content, and alcohol use that persist throughout the film. I give this film ½ star out of four.

"Lottery Ticket" not a total loss By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press The odds of winning the lottery are what, like, 1 in 175 million? They include his God-fearing grandma (Loretta Devine), the gossipy neighbor (Charlie Murphy) and the crazy recluse who lives in the basement and only pops his hand out with some cash for Kevin to buy him some beef jerky and a Cherry Coke (his identity will be revealed later). Along for the ride is his broke, unemployed best friend, Benny, played by Brandon T. Jackson, who has a loose, easy energy about him and gets many of the best lines. (He was also great as Alpa Chino in “Tropic Thunder.”) And there’s Kevin’s childhood pal, the collegebound Stacie (Naturi Naughton), who clearly wants to be more than friends, and should be. After a run-in with neighborhood ex-con Lorenzo (Gbenga Akinnagbe) over some Air Jordans gets him fired from his job, Kevin buys himself a lottery ticket while stopping at the corner store to buy one for his grandma. And whaddya know? The numbers he got out of a fortune cookie that day just happen to win him the $370 million jackpot. (Faheem Najm, better known as TPain, is hilarious in a low-key way in just a few scenes as the bemused store owner.) But because we need a plot contrivance to make things difficult for Kevin, it just happens to be the extended July 4 weekend, so he has to wait three days to cash in at the lottery office. This also means he has to survive three days of people cozying up to him or trying to kill him because he’s now a rich man. Keith David is reliable as the godfather of the projects, who gives Kevin a $100,000 “loan” in hopes of doing business with him (with an underused Terry Crews as his chauffeur/enforcer). Taking lessons from the masters Two local swimmers meet Michael Phelps By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Edwardsville resident Hanna Nelson, 14, and her friend Paige Eavenson, 14 of Granite City, received some elite swim training over the final week of July. The two teenagers traveled to the state-of-the-art North Baltimore Aquatic Club (NBAC) in Baltimore, Md., and learned from legendary swim coach Bob Bowman and got the opportunity to meet Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps. The small camp of about 40 boys and girls was instructed by Bowman, the head coach and CEO of NBAC, and his staff. Bowman had coached at NBAC from 19962004, but left to be the head swim coach at the University of Michigan from ‘05-'08 before returning. Bowman is also Phelps’ head coach and helped guide him to six gold and two bronze medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics and an unprecedented eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Nelson discovered the prestigious camp online and pined over attending the camp until her opportunity finally arose. “I got online and found the camp by chance,” she said. “I went to the NBAC Web site and they had a summer camp and I looked at it and they were already full. This was Christmas of ‘08 and they were already full for the 2009 summer. “I started saving money, because it was kind of expensive, and my parents told me I needed to save up if I wanted to go. It took me about a year to get the money and then I talked to Paige about going to the camp together. She really wanted to go and her parents were willing to pay for her. They didn’t let a lot of people in. There were only about 50 spots and then 15 of those spots were reserved for local kids and anyone who’s gone to the camp before had a 15 day window to sign up (before it opened to general public).” Nelson said she and Eavenson signed up in early November and on Nov. 20 the pair found out via email they were accepted to attend. It was right after the twosome returned from a swim meet and they were elated over the news. “When we found out, it was like the greatest day,” said Nelson. “I couldn’t believe we’d actually gotten in because it was so hard to get in and we were holding our breath for a while there, just hoping and praying that we were going to get into this camp. It was just mindboggling that we were going to get to go and train under (Bowman) and be at that sort of facility. That’s

September 2, 2010

For the Intelligencer

Pictured from left to right are: Michael Phelps, 14-time Olympic gold medal swimmer; Paige Eavenson, 14 of Granite City; and Hanna Nelson, 14 of Edwardsville. Eavenson and Nelson were thrilled when they met Phelps in July while attending a swim camp at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Baltimore, Md. one of the top clubs in the country.” Nelson followed Phelps at the Olympics and follows all the major swim meets when they’re on television or the Internet, so she’s a student of the sport and understands the importance of the great swim minds she was going to sponge off of in Baltimore. There was a plethora of outstanding tutelage to take in at the camp. The students received instruction on each stroke technique from different coaches, all serving the purpose of increasing their speed in the water. “In the morning we would go over certain drills we can do in practice that I’m going to use when I start training this winter (for the YMCA Breakers) to make sure I’m swimming correctly and doing the strokes correctly,” Nelson said. “That’s really important, because if you’re not doing it right, you’re not doing it the fastest you can. “In the afternoon we would get to swim a lap and they would have an underwater camera and they played it back for you and they’d say, ‘You need to rotate here differently or here differently.’

Earlier this summer my shoulders were hurting from the way I swam the backstroke and they told me to rotate differently and now they’re not hurting very much, so that’s a plus.” But the biggest thrill was getting to meet Phelps and pick his ultraexperienced brain for swimming tips. “He was a really cool guy,” said Nelson. “It was so surreal because everyone at the facility and on the team just treated him like a regular guy. He wasn’t the greatest Olympian there, he was just Michael. He came in one day and signed autographs and signed whatever we wanted and he said, ‘Ask me any questions you’d ever want to ask me and I’ll answer them.’ So we sat there for 45 minutes to an hour asking him different questions about swimming and how he trains, so it was really cool.” So what did Nelson ask him? “I asked him if he had any prerace rituals or anything he had to do the day of a meet or behind the block, or it would automatically be a bad day in the pool,” she

said. “It was really cool, because he talked directly to me when he answered my question and made eye contact. He said on the blocks he just kind of takes his hands and swings them forward while he’s bending down. It was really cool when I thought about it, because I’ve seen him do it before. “He also talked about how he has to stretch behind the blocks and listen to music and stuff like that.” She loved her time there meeting Phelps and Bowman and now that she’s attended the camp, she’s eligible for the early enrollment opportunity for next year, but after deliberation she thinks one visit is enough. “I learned a bunch while I was there,” said Nelson. “A crazy amount of stuff, but I don’t think I’ll be going back next year because it was so much money to raise. I had to raise $925 by myself, so it was a lot and I had to save for a year. I think I got all I could out of the camp and if I went back I’d have a lot of fun again and probably learn a little more, but I think I’m just happy I got to go this summer.”

Will Chelsea play the name game? NEW YORK (AP) – Is Chelsea a keeper or a changer? That’s what researchers call the newly married once they figure out what to do — if anything — about their names. Now that the big Clinton-Mezvinsky wedding is a wrap and Rhinebeck, N.Y., is back to its idyllic self, the question remains what Chelsea’s choice will be. There are loads of options, from making up brand new names and hybrids (Clevinsky) to hyphenates and add-ons like mom (Hillary Rodham Clinton). Research suggests more women than you might think — 77 to 95 percent — legally change their names when they marry, including those who take the time to make a switch but incorporate their maiden names informally to preserve their identities on the job. Jo-Anne Stayner, who provides name-change assistance at ImaMrs. com, said the decision today for many first-time brides is all about the value of a woman’s digital footprint, along with her educational and professional oomph. We’re not all Clintons, but we still care about the name game. “With most women establishing a career before marriage (the average new bride is about 27 years old), it makes sense to want to protect the personal brand they have worked 14-hour days to create,” Stayner said. The question-and-answer site Ask.com fields more than a million queries every day on a variety of subjects. In the last 30 days, three of its top 25 questions covered marital alphabet soup. — How long before a wedding do you start planning for a name change? Once engaged, Ask’s experts recommend. Legal steps must usually wait until after the ceremony because a marriage certificate is required as proof of a name change. Gathering forms and researching requirements can take time, so getting a prenuptial jump on the chore will help. Government a g e n c i e s , b a n k s , c re d i t c a rd companies and employers have their own procedures. — Whose last name goes first in hyphenation? The decision is usually based on sound, alphabetical order or personal preference. — What percentage of brides takes their husband’s name? Though recent research indicates a range spanning well over half, Ask cited one study done at Indiana University last year estimating 80 percent, with 70 percent of Americans surveyed saying brides SHOULD take their husband’s last name. A recent study out of the Netherlands indicates women who use their husbands’ surnames earn an average of about $1,150 less a month than those who keep their maiden names. Name-changers

Presidential daughters over the last four decades have either left their names alone or pushed them to the middle. At 30 with an advanced college degree and some work experience to her credit (as an investment analyst), Chelsea’s a pretty average bride, other than her dad being a former president, her mom secretary of state and her pricey nuptials dubbed the latest wedding of the century. She’s off on a top-secret honeymoon with no name announcement yet. But consider Samantha Saephan, 29, of the San Francisco Bay Area. She’s a public relations manager for a large communications and will soon dive in to a name change after getting hitched to Sean Thai on May 22. Of ethnic lu-Mien origin, her parents are from Laos and named her Meuang Ay Saephan. She chose Samantha for her public self in middle school but remained Meuang Ay legally and at home. “I already knew that I wanted to change my last name so I would have my husband’s last name,” she said. “It’s a little bit of being old fashioned and traditional, and also further down the line when we do have children I’d like to have the same last name as my kids.” Saephan wants to preserve part of her past, a decision made easier by her lack of a middle name. “I’m going back and forth on what part of my birth name I should leave as a middle name so I’ll still have something tied to my birth name.” On the table are “Samantha

Saephan,” “Samantha Meuang Ay Thai” and “Meuang Ay Thai.” Business law professor David Ryan Polgar, 31, in West Hartford, Conn., married Leslie Doane the same day Saephan and Thai wed. Doane legally took her hubby’s last name, informally preserving Doane

as a second middle name for her work as a real estate agent. “I want to come up in searches if people look me up under Doane, but the whole process is frustrating,” she said. And the male perspective? “I could never imagine changing my

name,” her husband said. Lauren Rotchford, 34, in Atlanta needs more time to make the leap after marrying Randy Holmes on May 8. She wants to change her name, but she’s having trouble letting go. “I think it’s important. We’re married. He’s my husband and I want to show that I’m committed to him,” she said. “It’s just that I feel like I waited a while to get married and I have experience in my career and I’m known as Lauren Rotchford. It’s a little bit harder than I thought it would be.” Until recently, Mary Dean Taylor’s feminist side was battling her madly in love side over taking on Birkel as she counts down to her wedding in Kansas City, Mo. “He’d really like for me to take his last name, though he hasn’t been insistent or vocal about it,” said Taylor, 31. She had a recent revelation to do the extra middle name thing informally and legally take on the hub’s surname. That’s four names. “My boss is already practicing,” Taylor said. In San Antonio, Texas, Alisa LeSueur is confidently on the other end of the spectrum. She was 46 when she married for the first time two years ago. It was husband Rob Salter’s second time around. “There was never a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t change my last name when I married,” she said. “It doesn’t make sense to me that I should lose my entire identity just because I have chosen one person to share the rest of my life with.”

Nothing smells better than freshly baked bread. For many of us, just thinking about baking a loaf of bread seems too time-consuming and if you are like me, I can never get it to rise properly. Best-selling cookbook author Judith Fertig reveals secrets to creating and baking incredible artisan breads in her new book: “200 Fast & Easy Artisan Breads “(Robert Rose; September 2009; Softcover/$24.95; ISBN: 978-0-77880212-9). Judith’s secret? Artisan bread dough can be created in about five minutes, simply by combining the ingredients, along with instant, or bread machine yeast, in one bowl. “Artisan bread baking, with its time-honored tradition and classic forms and methods, has seen a recent surge of revision. Baking experts and bread bloggers are taking old recipes and giving them new life,” said Fertig. “As a cookbook author, culinary instructor, and vocational baker, I’ve questioned, challenged, and tested my way to the best methods for baking artisan-quality breads in an easier, more achievable and rewarding activity for busy people.” Here are a couple sample recipes from the book: Master Recipe No. 1 Easy Artisan Dough This first master recipe introduces you to the basics of the Easy Artisan bread method. As you begin to make bread, all of this will get even easier. You won’t have to check the temperature of the water, as you’ll know what lukewarm feels like. You’ll get quite good at forming the various types of loaves and sliding them onto the hot baking stone. You’ll be able to tell by how fast the temperature rises on the instant read thermometer — when your bread reaches 190°F (90 °C) and is done. Your artisan loaves will have a crisp, darkened crust, a tender and moist crumb, and a mellow, toasty flavor — all with this easy method. The dough will also make delicious rolls, pizza, or flatbread. Makes bread, rolls, pizza, or flatbread to serve 12 to 16 Equipment

Measuring cups and spoons Instant read thermometer 16-cup bowl Wooden spoon or Danish dough whisk 3-sided cookie sheet, flexible cutting board, or baker’s peel Baking stone Broiler pan 6-1/2 cups (1.575 L) unbleached all-purpose or bread flour, plus more for dusting 1-1/2 tablespoon (22 mL) instant or bread machine yeast 1-1/2 tablespoon (22 mL) fine table or kosher salt 3 cup (750 mL) lukewarm water, about 100°F (38 °C) 1/4 cup (50 mL) cornmeal or polenta for sprinkling 2 cups (500 mL) hot water for broiler pan Measure. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup, level with a knife or your finger, then dump the flour into a large mixing bowl. Mix. Add the yeast and salt to the flour. Stir together with a wooden spoon or Danish dough whisk. Pour in the water and stir together until just moistened. Beat 40 strokes, scraping the bottom and the sides of the bowl, until the dough forms a lumpy, sticky mass. Rise. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature 72°F (22 °C) for 2 hours or until the dough has risen near the top of the bowl and has a spongelike appearance. Use Right Away or Refrigerate. Use that day or place the dough, covered with plastic wrap, in the refrigerator for up to 9 days before baking. Tip Combining 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) hot with 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) cold tap water will result in lukewarm water approximately 100°F (38 °C). Tip Before storing the dough in the refrigerator, use a permanent marker to write the date on the plastic wrap, so you’ll know when you made your dough — and when to use it up 9 days later. Flatbread with Caramelized Onion and Brie As an entrée for a casual meal or cut into squares for an appetizer, this flatbread always gets rave reviews.

Makes 1 flatbread to serve 4 as an entrée, 8 as an appetizer Equipment Spatula 8-inch (2 L) square baking pan or dish Baking stone Instant read thermometer 1/4 recipe prepared Easy Artisan Dough Unbleached, all-purpose flour for dusting 1 cup prepared caramelized onion 8 ounces brie, cut into 1-inch pieces, rind on 2 cups hot water for broiler pan Form. To form the flatbread, remove a fourth of the dough— about the size of a softball—with a serrated knife and a dough scraper. The remaining dough in the bowl will deflate somewhat. Transfer the dough portion to a floured surface and dust very lightly with flour. Flour your hands. Working the dough as little as possible and adding flour as necessary, pat the dough into an 8-inch/20 cm square. Lightly flour any sticky places on the dough. The dough should feel soft and smooth all over, like a baby’s skin, but not at all sticky. Rest. Grease an 8-inch (2 L) square baking pan or dish. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan and pat to fit. Use a fork to spread the Caramelized Onion over the top of the flatbread, then dot with brie. Cover with a tea towel and let rest at room temperature for 40 minutes. Prepare Oven for Artisan Baking. About 30 minutes before baking, place a broiler pan on the lower shelf and a baking stone on the middle shelf of the oven. Preheat to 450°F

(230 °C). Dimple Flatbread with the Handle End of a Wooden Spoon. When ready to bake, the dough will not have risen much, but will finish rising dramatically in the oven. Using the handle end of a wooden spoon, dimple the flatbread at 2inch/5 cm intervals. Slide Flatbread onto Baking Stone and Add Water to Broiler Pan. Using an oven mitt, carefully pull the middle rack of the oven out several inches. Place the pan of flatbread on the hot stone. Pull the lower rack out, pour the hot water into the broiler pan, and push the lower rack back in place. Close the oven door immediately so the oven will envelop the steam. Bake. Bake for 25 to 27 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned. Transfer to a rack to cool. Change It Up: For Heirloom Tomato Flatbread, prepare the flatbread recipe through the “Form” Step. Place the flatbread in the prepared pan, dimple the dough with handle of a wooden spoon, then top with 8 fresh basil leaves. Arrange 1 cup (250 mL) chopped fresh heirloom tomato (try using golden or orange heirlooms) on top of the basil. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup (125 mL) freshly grated Parmesan and drizzle with 2 tablespoons (25 mL) olive oil. Bake for 25 to 27 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned. Any grill can produce great barbecue NEW YORK (AP) – Making mouthwatering smoked and barbecued meats in your backyard is easy, so long as you don’t mind being a control freak. Te n d e r, f l a v o r f u l b a r b e c u e is all about slow cooking at low temperatures. That’s why it is essential that you be able to carefully control the heat in your grill or smoker. The good news is that no matter what equipment you have, it’s possible to get great barbecue. The trick is knowing how to use your grill for indirect cooking, which is just a fancy term for not cooking directly over a flame or bed of coals. By cooking to the side of the heat source, the meat cooks more slowly and won’t burn. How you do that depends on the type of grill you have. Here are some tips on making the most of what you have. — Classic charcoal grills with a cover, such as a Weber kettle, work well when you use the special baskets they make to keep the coals contained to one or both sides of the grill. This allows you considerable control over the temperature at which you cook the meat. It also helps to place a pan filled with liquid (water, wine, cider, beer, whatever) under the meat to add moisture. Vents at the top and bottom of the grill will need to be adjusted often, and fresh coals added in order to maintain a constant temperature. — Cookers that are more specifically designed for barbecue are made by companies such as Brinkmann. They offer vertical models that have a heat source at the bottom with a water pan above it, as well as horizontal designs that have separate sections for the coals and the food (which reduces drying). Both varieties will produce tender results, but still need coals added to them regularly and must have the vents monitored to keep the temperature stable. — One of the most efficient (and expensive) styles is a ceramic, barrel-shaped grill/smoker, such as The Big Green Egg. These have a vent at the bottom along with a chimney on the top that allow them to burn coals extremely efficiently and maintain steady temperatures over a long period of time with little or no adjustment. The ceramic materials these cookers are made of hold plenty of moisture, which helps keep meats from drying out. — But if ease is essential, consider a common gas grill. Some barbecue purists may scoff, but gas grills have advantages for making good barbecue. They hold their temperature well without any adjustments, have separate burners to facilitate indirect cooking, and gas heat is less drying. The downside of gas is that you

Chili and coffee-rubbed smoked chuck roast. Low and slow is the mantra of backyard barbecue gurus and this recipe is perfect for a first timer or a seasoned BBQ chef. miss out on the flavor that charcoal adds to the meat, though you can get decent smoke by putting wet wood chips in a foil packet or a smoker box directly on the heat source. This chili- and coffee-rubbed smoked chuck roast came out equally moist and tender on a gas grill and a Big Green Egg. The flavor was undeniably more complex from the ceramic cooker, but the intense, sweet flavors of the rich coffee and toasted chilibased rub made the beef a treat even when cooked with gas. CHILI- AND COFFEE-RUBBED SMOKED CHUCK ROAST Start to finish: 5 to 7 hours (15 minutes active) plus at least 1 hour marinating Servings: 6 to 8 1 dried whole Anaheim or New Mexico chili 1 dried whole ancho chili 2 t a b l e s poons whole cumin seeds 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder

Transfer to a cutting board. Add the cumin seeds to the skillet and toast, stirring constantly, until fragrant, 60 to 90 seconds. Transfer the seeds to a blender or the bowl of a mini food processor. Remove and discard the stems from the chilies and cut into 1-inch pieces, then add to the blender or processor. Add the vinegar, brown sugar, garlic powder, espresso powder, salt, pepper and water. Process to a smooth paste, adding water, a teaspoon at a time, if necessary. Place the chuck roast in a large bowl or baking dish and coat completely with the chili paste. In addition to the house there is an open front corrugated metal “loafing” style building to the back for parking or storage. The foundation is native stone and houses a large easily accessed basement. Call the auctioneer for a private viewing. Auction Terms: Seller confirmation of final bid is required.
