The show is presented by the Midwest Gateway RV Dealers Association. Nearly 300 recreational vehicles, including motorhomes, 5th wheels, travel trailers, sport utility trailers, pop-ups, and camper vans from ten recreational vehicle dealers which make up the Midwest Gateway RV Dealers Association will be displayed on the Mall’s parking lot. Chicago Dance Crash performs "Evil & Good," the show that will open Arts & Issues at SIUE on Sept. 16.

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

T

he multi-disciplined, contemporary dance company, Chicago Dance Crash, kicks off the SIUE Arts & Issues season at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 in the Dunham Hall Theater on the SIUE campus.

The performance, “Evil & Good” is the latest production of Chicago Dance Crash (CDC) and is inspired by CDC’s street dance aesthetic which utilizes the company’s signature blend of concert dance and hip-hop. This explosive, full-length conceptual piece is inspired by the world’s constant struggle between its angels and demons. Led by artistic director Jessica Deahr, CDC is known for being a multi-disciplinary style of company – meaning that it uses several dance styles like ballet, break-dance, acrobatic, capoeira, contemporary dance and hip hop to blend into their own fusion style that the company refers to as “athletic and accessible.” Since the company was founded in 2002 by Marissa Moritz, Mark Hackman, and Charlie Cutler, CDC has emerged as a critical staple of the Chicago scene. Sponsored by Commerce Bank, CDC's performance is the finale to the university's annual Xfest, a week-long “Xperimental theatre” featuring different performances each day by dance companies and theatre groups across the country. Xfest was founded in 2009 by the SIUE Department of Theatre and Dance. Peter Cocuzza, professor of theater and dance, and Chuck Harper, associate professor of theater and dance, led the efforts. Harper describes

experimental theater on the SIUE web site like conducting a science experiment. “Basically, you're saying: What would happen if?” Harper states on the web site. It further notes that experimental theater asks questions that traditional theater has stopped asking. Questions like what is the performer's relationship to the audience? What is the performer's responsibility to the audience? What is the audience's responsibility to the performers? Where can theatre happen? Is there more than one way to tell a story? Just how important is the story anyway? Is there any such thing as "character" or are there only people and words and ideas? With the creation of Xfest, the department has striven to give alternative theatre a thriving platform at SIUE and within the community. This year's Xfest line-up begins on Sept. 13 when Equally Represented Arts, a St. Louis theater group, presents R+J: A Telephone Play (also known as Don't Drink the Milk). The 7:30 p.m. performance takes place in the Metcalf Theatre on the SIUE campus. According to the Xfest web site, R+J: A Telephone Play is the performance of six new plays created through the context of a game of telephone where a person whispers a message to another person. The message is then passed through a line of people until the last player announces the message to the entire group. “The original message for this particular game of telephone is the last scene of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We created an audio recording of this scene and sent it to the first playwright in the line. The playwright listened to the recording and wrote what he/she heard in the form of a play. Then, we sent an audio recording of this new play to the next playwright in the line, and so on,” the web site states. A Zombie Odyssey, presented by Seattle's Theatre

September 8, 2016

Simple, takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. The Xfest web site describes this play as an “intensely physical theatrical experience” about our hero, Brian Smith, who embarks on an epic quest to reunite with his wife after his demise. The play pushes the audience to question “what is human, and what makes a monster?" while at the same time playing between humor and horror in this zombie radio-drama/physical theater mash-up. “Love zombies? It's got all the fights, sex, gore, and nerd references you crave,” the website notes. “Hate zombies? Come anyway. This risky, highly-physical show serves up helpings of drama, humor, horror, and humanity-examining philosophy.” The Coldharts, a New York theater group, presents Edgar Allan at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 in the Metcalf Theater. The Xfest web site describes this two-person musical as a manic lullaby inspired by the childhood and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. “Edgar Allan is a dark, comedic riff of the childhood, the mania, and the insanity that haunted the life and work of America's first professional writer,” it states. Xfest then wraps up the week with the CDC's performance. Information about additional Xfest performances can be found at siuexfest.com Arts & Issues tickets can be ordered on-line at artsandissues.com or in-person at the Morris University Center (MUC) Welcome Desk. The MUC Welcome Desk is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Welcome Desk is closed on Sunday. Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017. Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest c i t y i n b e t w e e n . A s t h e ro a d meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous mot e s. R out e 6 6 : M a i n S t re e t through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road. Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and

depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west. Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 ParkIn Theatre. Artifacts include neon

signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer. 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California. Route 66 bore witness to the rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps. By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete. The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with

This film gives our audiences a breathtaking view of our home planet as can only be experienced on our giant dome screen, said Jackie Mollet, Managing Director Visitor Services at the Saint Louis Science Center. “The images will leave a lasting impression on visitors, helping us understand the impact we make on a global scale. The fact that all of the images of earth are captured by astronauts on the International Space Station, allows us a peek into their world and their perspective. The musical soundtrack and Jennifer Lawrence’s narration add to the experience of making this the next, classic IMAX film. "A Beautiful Planet"reunites much of the filmmaking team from Hubble 3D and Space Station 3D, led by producer and director Toni Myers, who also wrote and edited the film. Director of photography James Neihouse, ASC, served as the astronaut

The Arts STAGES to present "Sister Act" For The Edge There’s a real reason to rejoice for everybody’s favorite nun, Deloris Van Cartier, is coming to STAGES to stir up her special brand of habit-forming fun! Playing September 9-October 9 at the Robert G. Reim Theatre in Kirkwood, Sister Act will close STAGES’ 30th Anniversary Season with the gift of laughter, the power of music, and a touch of heavenly inspiration. Join the happy multitudes who have made Sister Act one of Broadway’s favorite new musical comedies and enjoy all the fun, laughter, and irresistible music that packed pews all over America in this regional theatre premiere. This divine comedy about a sassy, low-rent lounge singer forced to hide out from the mob in the last place anyone would ever look for her – a convent – recently became one of Broadway’s smash-hit musicals. With its soulful chorus of swingin’ sisters, Sister Act continues to attract flocks of faithful followers. Blessed with a rollicking new musical score from Tony and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken – the composer who brought us Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Newsies, and Aladdin, this production boasts powerful music and show-stopping dance numbers. With its truly moving story, Sister Act celebrates the universal power of love and the joys of friendship and sisterhood. Before Sister Act was seen on stage, a film version of the same name appeared on the silver screen in 1992, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith, and Harvey Keitel. As the eighth-highest grossing film worldwide in 1992, the film became one of the most financially successful comedies of the 1990s. The stage version of Sister Act opened in the Pasadena Playhouse in 2006, followed by a run at London’s West End in 2009. Originally written by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner, both known for their work on the hit TV show “Cheers”, the show was later revised with additional book material written by Douglas Carter Beane. This new version opened on Broadway in April 2011 and garnered five Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Broadway Actress Dan’yelle Williamson stars as Deloris Van Cartier. Making her STAGES debut, Williamson has appeared on Broadway in Memphis, Scandalous, and Rocky as well as Off-Broadway in Soul Doctor. National Tours/Regional credits include The Lion King, Dreamgirls, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Wicked. Broadway Actress Corinne Melançon stars as Mother Superior. Melançon returns to STAGES, previously appearing this season as the title role in The Drowsy Chaperone. She also has appeared in several of STAGES’ earlier productions, including A Little Night Music, Sweet Charity, and High Society. Melançon recently completed an 11-year run on Broadway in Mamma Mia! and has appeared in several other Broadway shows, including Kiss Me, Kate, Jekyll & Hyde, Big, and My Fair Lady. Other New York credits include appearances at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and Rainbow & Stars. Also starring is New York Actor Curtis Wiley as Eddie Souther. Making his STAGES debut, Wiley has appeared in the National Tours of Jersey Boys, The Lion King, and Motown: The Musical and the Off-Broadway Revival of Pageant: The Musical. Other New York credits include The Great Society, Tut, and King Lear. New York Actor Kent Overshown stars as Curtis Jackson. Returning to STAGES, Overshown most recently starred in STAGES’ 2015 production of Smokey Joe’s Café. Overshown has performed in the National Tours of Memphis and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and also has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra as well as in multiple productions at The Muny. Returning to STAGES, St. Louis Actor Steve Isom stars as Monsignor O’Hara. A familiar face in St. Louis, Isom has performed at venues throughout the city, including The Muny, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, St. Louis Actors’ Studio, and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Rounding out the cast are Leah Berry (Mary Robert), Keith Boyer (Pablo), Sarah Michelle Cuc (Sister Mary Patrick), Kevin Curtis (T.J.), Michele Burdette Elmore (Sister Mary Lazarus), and Myles McHale (Joey). DixiesTupperwareParty.com The Book Of Moron December 27, 2016-January 1, 2017 All seats: $50 Robert Dubac’s newest Off-Broadway hit The Book Of Moron has been described as one of the most hilarious, intelligent and scorching satirical attacks on idiocracy since Mark Twain. Having b e e n b r a i n w a s h e d b y a c u l t u re t h a t worships the Kardashians over character, delusion over truth, and selfies over selfeffacement, Dubac begins his journey with a simple question: Who am I? What do I believe? What’s the point? Okay, that’s three questions but suffice to say, he has no answers. Just voices. Inner voices who come to life with precision and wit. One by one they pull him into a hysterical alternative universe of critical thought in search of the bigger picture. It’s a head trip on a banana peel. The Book Of Moron is a fast-paced, hilarious production that combines satire and theater into what is being described by critics as: “Razorsharp!” “Laugh Out Loud!” “Provocative!” “Thought Provoking!” “Brilliant!” and “A Thin king Man ’ s O n e Man Show! ” If you are yearning for some satire that cuts with a clever intelligent edge or if you are tired of adolescent comedies generated by the mediocrity of television, then buckle them up for a hilarious joyride over the pot-holed highways of cultural hypocrisy. It’s comedy on steroids. Do you think your funny bone can handle it? For more information, please visit www. Artistic adventures Rep announces Studio Theatre series

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) has announced its 2016-2017 season of performances in the Studio Theatre: Mothers and Sons, October 26-November 13, 2016; Constellations, January 18-February 5, 2017; and The Royale, March 8-26, 2017. The Studio Theatre series opens on October 26 in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the LorettoHilton Center for the Performing Arts with Mothers and Sons by Terrence McNally. Mothers and Sons is a moving illustration of how societal changes have mpacted gay A m e r i c a n s i n t h e p a s t t h re e decades. The show spotlights the journey of Katharine, a woman who is still coming to terms with the AIDS-related death of her son 20 years prior. She seeks out her son’s former partner, Cal, only to discover that he now has a husband and a six-yearold son. As she and Cal explore memories of someone they both loved, Katharine begins a rocky

journey toward reconciliation with the side of her son that she never understood. The Studio Theatre series continues with Constellations by Nick Payne. This daring, twoperson show illuminates the limitless possibilities contained within one relationship. When Roland and Marianne meet at a party, a multiverse of potential outcomes unfolds. Each choice they make unlocks a series of branching story paths — some wonderful, some tragic. Payne’s genre-busting new play explores these alternate universes with wit, wonder and an overflowing sense of life. Hailed by The New Yorker as “a singular astonishment, Constellations creates a vibrant collision of love and theoretical physics. Closing the series is The Royale, by Marco Ramirez and directed by Stuart Carden. The brutal rhythm of boxing underscores this brilliantly stylized drama. Rising black prizefighter Jay “The Sport Jackson dominates his opponents, but the harsh social realities of the early 1900s force him to fight twice as hard to earn recognition

outside of the ring. Loosely based on iconic fighter Jack Johnson, The Royale brings us ringside to one man’s quest for victory against all odds. “Our Studio Theatre season has incredible stylistic diversity, said Steven Woolf, The Rep’s Augustin Family Artistic Director. “Mothers and Sons is a beautiful and understated piece, Constellations is an impressive feat of unconventional storytelling, and The Royale makes full use of lighting and sound to capture the audience’s imagination. It’s a remarkable collection of shows that adds exciting new dimensions to The Rep’s 50th anniversary season. Season ticket packages for The Rep’s 2016-2017 Studio Theatre series are on sale now. By purchasing season tickets, subscribers can save substantially o v e r t h e c o s t o f p u rc h a s i n g individual show tickets and enjoy exclusive benefits. Studio Theatre subscription packages range from $105-$162 for all three shows. Studio Theatre single tickets (starting at $43.50) go on sale October 1.

Artistic adventures "Love Jones – The Musical" coming to The Fox

Fox Concerts is excited to announce that "Love Jones – The Musical" will play live at the Fabulous Fox Theatre October 29 – 30. Inspired by one of the greatest urban films of all time, Love Jones, written and directed by Theodore Witcher. Music sensations Musiq Soulchild, Chrisette Michele, Marsha Ambrosius, MC Lyte, Dave Hollister and Raheem DeVaughn join forces to tell the classic love story of Darius and Nina in Love Jones – The Musical. Tickets are $88, $78, $73, $68, $63, $58, $53, $48, $38 and are on sale at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office.

Fox selling 2016-17 tickets

Tickets for "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" and "Once" at the Fabulous Fox Theatre are on sale. online at MetroTix.com, by phone at 314-534-1111 and in person at the Fox Theatre Box office. Ticket prices for "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" start at $20; ticket prices for "Once" start at $25. Both shows are part of the Fabulous Fox’s 2016 – 2017 U.S. Bank Broadway series. "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" is the first production in the six-show season ticket package; "Once" is an offseries special. "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" – September 13–25, 2016 Getting away with murder can be so much fun‌ and there’s no better proof than the knock-‘em-dead hit show that’s earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony AwardÂŽ for Best Musical—"A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder"! As one most gentlemanly NPR critic put it, “I’ve never laughed so hard at a Broadway musical!â€? Gentleman's Guidetells the story of Monty, an heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by - you guessed it - eliminating the eight relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way. All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress, his fiancĂŠe and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his

inheritance‌ and be done in time for tea. "Once" – September 30–October 2, 2016 Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, "Once" is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, "Once" tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Single ticket on sale dates for the remaining shows in the 2016 – 2017 U.S. Bank Broadway Series will be announced at a later date. New six-show subscription packages are still available and include tickets to "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder", "Fun Home," " Finding Neerland," "An American in Paris," "Something Rotten!" and Roundabout Theatre Company’s "Cabaret". "Pete's Dragon"

After an exhausting summer buffet of set pieces, superheroes and whatever s-word you might use for "Suicide Squad," the gentle "Pete's Dragon" is a welcome palate cleanser. Where other summer movies are chest-thumping, it's quiet; where others are brashly cynical, it's sweetly sincere; where others are lacking in giant cuddly dragons, "Pete's Dragon" has one. Few may remember the 1977 Disney original, in which a young boy's best friend was a bubbly dragon invisible to others. As part of Disney's continuing effort to remake its animated classics in live-action, "Pete's Dragon" has been confidently reborn as an earnest tale of green-winged wonder. David Lowery, a veteran of the independent film world and the director of the lyrical crime drama "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," inherits a far bigger film. But his "Pete's Dragon" still maintains the homespun feel of an American fable. Spielberglight, you might call it. The film begins, in the "Bambi" tradition, in parental tragedy. Pete's family is driving through a remote Pacific Northwest forest with Pete nestled in the backseat of the station wagon, reading a children's book about a dog named Elliott. A deer sprints out and, in poetic slow-motion, the gravity of the car's interior is upended. The car flips off the road and Pete staggers from the crash. Flashing forward six years, Pete (Oakes Fegley) is a wild 10-year-old orphan living in the woods alone except for his magical companion, the dragon Elliott. As far as CGI creatures go, Elliott is an irresistible one. Furry as a fairway, he's like an enormous emerald-green puppy. Far from the "Game of Thrones" dragon variety, he's more adept at chasing his own tail than breathing fire. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action, peril and brief language." RUNNIING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Sausage Party"

It's happened. Someone has outdone the "Team America" puppet sex scene and even made it look somewhat quaint in comparison. Anyone even vaguely interested in the very R-rated animated film "Sausage Party " has likely heard whispers about the food orgy. Words can't even begin to do this sequence justice, but I guarantee you've never seen anything like it in a mainstream studio movie. It's jaw-dropping. Of course it's compliments of the minds that blew up a foreign leader in "The Interview" and reveled in the comedy of rape by demon in "This is the End." Yes, co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations once more to concoct what is easily the year's most audacious film. And it's packaged in animation cutesy enough for Pixar. In the grand tradition of "Toy Story," ''Sausage Party" imagines the lives of the foodstuffs in the local supermarket aisle. But it doesn't merely anthropomorphize the food. It gives them sexuality, lust, ethnicities and even religion. "Sausage Party" is just as much a sweet story about belief and faith as it is a vehicle for the filthiest jokes you've never dared imagine. Frank (Seth Rogen), a non-descript hot dog, waits somewhat impatiently with his fellow mates to be selected by the gods (humans) to be taken to a paradise in The Great Beyond (purchased). Everyone in the store knows something good is out there waiting. The foods and condiments and sweets begin every day with a rousing song about The Great Beyond and the Gods, each putting their own spin on it (i.e. the German mustard has added a line about exterminating Juice). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong crude sexual content, pervasive language, and drug use." RUNNING TIME: 89 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Ben-Hur"

Remaking a film that won 11 Academy Awards invites inevitable comparison, but the latest adaptation of "Ben-Hur" distinguishes itself from William Wyler's 1959 epic by retooling key character and story elements. It's still a big, biblical-era tale of power, loyalty and vengeance, only refocused through rosecolored lenses with an eye toward appealing to the lucrative faith-based audience. Produced by the power couple behind "The Bible" miniseries, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, this "Ben Hur" is like an abbreviated, more Christ-centered take on Wyler's film. It boasts similar sweeping desert landscapes, well-dressed Roman armies and heart-pounding equestrian action. Some shots pay clear homage to the Oscar-winning classic. The violence here is far more graphic, thanks to modern special effects (and sensibilities). This film is also an hour and 40 minutes shorter than Wyler's epic (thank goodness). But where Wyler's version is ultimately about family and unrequited romance, director Timur Bekmambetov is more interested in redemption and the words of Jesus Christ. Jesus was silent and his face unseen in Wyler's film. Played handsomely by Rodrigo Santoro, Jesus has a lot to say here. Screenwriters Keith Clarke and Oscar winner John Ridley ("12 Years a Slave") start with the premise and characters from the original 1880 novel. Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and Messala (Toby Kebbell) are like brothers until Messala becomes a Roman officer who falsely accuses Judah of betrayal. Messala condemns Judah to slavery and jails his innocent mother and sister. After years of captivity and an unlikely escape, Judah befriends a horseman who insists he exact vengeance against Messala during the celebrated Roman chariot race. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence and disturbing images." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"War Dogs"

"War Dogs " is too good of a true story not to get the Hollywood treatment, even if the end result doesn't entirely do justice to the moral ambiguities and larger geopolitical implications of one of the craziest hustles in modern American history. Essentially, in 2007, a couple of 20-something stoners from Miami Beach landed a nearly $300 million contract from the Department of Defense to supply ammunition to the Afghan military. And, unbeknownst to the U.S. government at the time, many of the supplies they were selling were over 40 years old, manufactured in China and basically unusable. It's an absolutely insane story of the ambition, delusion and megalomania of a few young strivers who managed to find a lucrative place in the international arms game. The events have been chronicled extensively in the press over the past eight years, including by journalist Guy Lawson, whose Rolling Stone article "The Stoner Arms Dealers" and book became the basis for the film. Director and co-writer Todd Phillips, best known for chestthumping comedies like "The Hangover" trilogy, reaches beyond his comfort zone to tell this complicated and fraught tale. The film struggles to find the right tone, and instead of consistency goes for a more disjointed kitchen-sink approach that juggles satire, bro fantasy and high-stakes thriller with varying results. Miles Teller stars as David Packouz, a struggling massage therapist who takes up with Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) in a moment of desperation. A much shadier figure but a childhood friend nonetheless, Efraim has the plan to game the government contracts system and make a few bucks from the war. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, drug use and some sexual references." RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Hands of Stone"

"Hands of Stone " is a sprawling yet fairly conventional biopic about the Panamanian boxing champion Roberto Duran — a man The Associated Press once declared the 7th greatest fighter and No. 1 lightweight of the 20th century. For the uninitiated, the title refers to Duran's nickname. He was known for packing a mighty hit and (usually) winning. When he faced Sugar Ray Leonard for the Welterweight title in 1980, he was 71-1. He won that match too, only to forfeit it six months later in a bizarre re-match that's become known as the "No Mas Fight." Popular myth would have us all believe that Duran said "No Mas" to end the match partway through. He'd fallen out of shape in the months between the two fights. That event is dramatized in writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz's film, with Edgar Ramirez as Duran and the singer Usher Raymond as Leonard. But while it might be the showdown that has cemented Duran's unique place in history (even if he probably didn't utter those words), it's hardly the main event of "Hands of Stone," which strives to give context to Duran's life — complications and all. Our entry to the story is oddly through the famed coach Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro), who comes to observe Duran in action before agreeing to train him. He's already great at this point, but Arcel is there to take him to the next level — namely the United States. Duran isn't interested at first — he hates the U.S. for what they've done to his country. The framework allows "Hands of Stone" to jump back in time to a glossy reenactment of the 1964 riots over sovereignty of the Panama Canal. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout and some sexuality/nudity." RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Don't Breathe"

To all you Detroit-area robbery crews, we should probably warn you right away: It's just not a good idea to pick 1837 Buena Vista Street for your big — and final — score. Take our word for it, walk away. Sure, it sounds like an easy hit. The address is a home in a run-down section of the city, so there's nobody around. The house is kind of moldering, too. And, yes, the owner is an old blind man living alone who apparently has a fortune stashed somewhere. But, listen, let this one go. You won't? Fine. Then beware, you are walking into the well-plotted trap of Fede Alvarez, who made his Hollywood debut with the reboot of the horror classic "Evil Dead," and returns this month with "Don't Breathe ." It pits a team of inept burglars against a homeowner who fights back. In that sense, it's kind of like a twisted "Home Alone" for millennials. This isn't a gore-fest or a flick that relies on the supernatural. It's more a thriller wedded to a horror film. Our trio of wouldbe predators quickly becomes hunted by the surprisingly spry old man, who happens to be a military veteran and comfortable with all sorts of weapons. Oh, did we mention his rather nasty dog? Written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, "Don't Breathe" is almost a throw-back to older horror films. It's meticulously planned and thrillingly satisfying with a camera always a step ahead — if you see an array of sharp tools near the beginning, bet on them being used at some point. Roque Baños' discordant soundtrack manages to capture dread beautifully. The set-up stars three young Detroiters — a brutish Daniel Zovatto, his lovely girlfriend Jane Levy and their smart friend Dylan Minnette. They have bought into that cliche that somehow makes robbers less villainous — one last job and they're out. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "terror, violence, disturbing content and language including sexual references." RUNNING TIME:: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

They have bought into that cliche that somehow makes robbers less villainous — one last job and they're out. "If we do it right, we never have to do it again," the young woman promises. That turns out to be correct, but not in the way she means. In their way is Stephen Lang, playing the blind guy. He harbors a dirty little secret that the trio soon uncovers and most of the

film is spent with everyone rushing about in his claustrophobic home, filled with creaky floorboards and more locks than a Lowe's. Everyone seems to die multiple times, even the dog. The plot gets sort of ludicrous by the end — right around the time Lang gets to start talking — but there were moments at a recent preview where a pin could drop and make more noise than one of the poor burglars trying to do what the movie title demands. You try standing perfectly still while an annoyed vet aims a pistol in your general direction. So again, robbery crews are strongly advised to avoid 1837 Buena Vista, but moviegoers hoping for a thrill might like to visit. But don't linger.

"Southside with You" is middle of the road By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Late August is the home base of the little picture. Such is the case with this week’s timid new release “Southside with You”, a fictional representation of the first date between law student Barack Obama and his fledgling attorney mentor, Michelle Robinson. That the film would be made is not a surprise. That it would be made today is a little strange. With the uncertainty in our current political landscape nightmare, I would have thought this movie more suited for distribution back when the Obamas were the New Kennedys just after the Inauguration Ball in 2009. The horizon was full of “yes we can” possibilities and no one was feeling anything but hopeful, given the President’s already clear

ability to hold an audience and inspire a room. Still, they were so much younger then; being Commander in Chief has aged Mr. Obama greatly in eight years. And even though the First Lady is still glamorous in all she does, I’m sure she’s counting down the days to change her address from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There’s a luster on the White House, but I would hypothesize that it’s never really home. First time feature director Richard Tanne takes a really great idea for a movie and whips into shape something that has appeal for many folks, mostly older members of the audience who remember a time when the Office was and should have been revered. He liberally applies dramatic license to some sequences, like the parts where Barack talks to a group at a church

about race and public service. While true, and a recurring element of his pre-political life, Mr. Obama didn’t take Michelle to such a rally on their first date. It comes later. This one starts way back when pre-Senator Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) was a summer intern at the Chicago firm of Sidley Austin after law school in 1989 and where he met the lovely Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter). As the low-man on the totem pole, so to speak, Michelle had the obligation to show him around the firm and keep him company at a few informal corporate events, all the while turning his requests for dates. I do like that one of today’s most relevant and conspicuous political marriages is based on events that have a certain unethical vibe, however thinly evident, in what is quite arguably one of the biggest

sins of workplace harassment. He wore her down, though, and their first official date - now the stuff of legend that keeps their daughters proud when they think about it – was a tour of south Chicago that actually sounds like it might have been a pretty good affair. There was an art exhibit focusing on African tribal works. There was a screening of the hot button, hot summer film “Do the Right Thing” from now supporter Spike Lee. The movie may actually have stood the test of time as well as, or even better, than the relationship between our President and his First Lady, given its status as a modern classic in the depiction of racial tensions. There was also ice cream and a first kiss outside that parlor. It’s this tender scene that encapsulates their chemistry, this pretty actress from other films like “Ride Along” and

September 8, 2016

“Think Like a Man” and this bigeared fella we’ve not seen much of before. He seems like a decent talent, though, his mannerisms and speechifying delivery giving him an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Obama. As far as romantic comedies go, this one is pretty tepid. Hard winks foreshadow things we know now about their habits (her healthy eating; his occasional sneak of a cigarette). But as far as relationships go, this one is fairly well documented. They were married in 1992. Malia was born in 1998 and Sasha joined her in 2001. That’s a legacy any parents can be proud of. “Southside with You” runs 84 minutes and is rated PG-13 for brief strong language, smoking, a violent image, and a drug reference. I give this film two stars out of four.

Religion briefs Pope Francis chats in person with Facebook CEO Zuckerberg

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has met with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Z u c k e r b e rg a n d Z u c k e r b e rg ' s wife, Priscilla Chan, at the Vatican. Vatican spokesman Greg Burke says one topic of discussion at Monday's meeting was "how to use communication technologies to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter, and make a message of hope arrive, especially to those most in need." The atmosphere appeared informal, with the chat taking place in the Santa Marta residence, the guest house in Vatican City where the pope lives. Zuckerberg wore a dark suit and tie for the occasion while Chan wore a black, knee-length dress.

The Kitchen Sink Bar & Grill By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge My latest food adventure took me to a unique and quirky joint in downtown St. Louis, aptly named The Kitchen Sink Bar & Grill. This cross between Cajun and American cuisine is located at 626 N. 6th St. in St. Louis. The Kitchen Sink gets its name from the fact you can eat just about everything you can think of there except the kitchen sink. Many of the selections on the menu will have you salivating and scratching your head at the same time. Maybe the most famous item on the menu is something I can't even really explain. It's called the IDK. That stands for “I Don't Know” and this brilliant marketing idea leaves your fate in the hands of the cooks. The IDK is comprised of ingredients that may not even be found on the menu. You have no say in what you're getting. My buddy Brian and I visited recently before going to a Cardinal game and we were intrigued by the IDK so we asked some questions about it. “What if you have a food allergy?” Brian asked. The waitress responded, “Then it's not for you.” “I don't like gravy, can I ask for it not to include gravy?” I asked. The waitress responded again, “Then it's not for you.” There are no requests and no refunds. You pay $15 and get a unique creation with whatever blows the chef's skirt up. As a dedicated and professional journalist, I really wanted to order the IDK and share the experience with you, but my fear that it would be smothered in disgusting, thick white gravy was just too overwhelming. Instead I went with arguably the most ridiculous sandwich on the menu — the Al'Key Burger — along with The Kitchen Sink's staple, their dirty fries. Brian was a little more tame, ordering the Phat Albert and the bistro fries. We'll start with Brian's selection. I wouldn't categorize the Phat Albert as tame, but in

comparison to my order it definitely was. The Phat Alberts is comprised of a half pound fusion patty of ground chuck and ribeye, topped with brisket, country slaw and swiss cheese. It's served on Texas toast. Brian said it was very good. As for his bistro fries, you could tell they were freshly cut spuds with skin on gussied up with some spices. Brian said they were kind of sweet and he raved about their freshness. My meal was a bit more glutinous than Brian's. I'll start with my dirty fries, which I would promptly rename fantastic fries. I guess it depends on your definition of dirty, sometimes dirty can be good. These were the same freshly cut fries as Brian's pedestrian bistro version, but mine were blanketed in wonderful red kidney beans, delicious andouille sausage and finished with a creamy cheese sauce. They were also garnished with a little chopped parsley. Oh my goodness were they magnificent. The beans and sausage made them heavy enough that they could have almost served as a full meal. My palate jumped from sweet, to spicy, to salty all in the same dish and you can't go wrong with that. I should have jumped up and given the dirty fries a

standing ovation while I was there; that's how good they were. The Al'Key Burger I didn't have quite the same infatuation with, but it wasn't bad. The problem with this unique monstrosity is it's extremely heavy, even for a champion eater like myself. Let's breakdown the Al'Key Burger. It's a beer-battered burger, topped with beerbattered bacon and smothered in beer cheese sauce on a toasted white bun. Heavy is an understatement for this beast. When it arrives all you notice is plump, deepfried hunks of food on a bun. As I bit into that's where you got the juicy burger and equally juicy bacon freed from their fried containment. Throw in the thick and creamy beer cheese oozing all over everything and I could only eat half of it. It wasn't bad by taste, but a little went a long way. Our waitress informed me that my mistake is I ate the Al'Key Burger prior to going to the Cardinal game and partaking in a few adult beverages. She admitted patrons usually say it goes down smoother under the enhancement of alcohol. I don't know about that, but I give the Al'Key Burger a thumbs up on creativity for sure. There is plenty of uniqueness and thinking

outside of the box at The Kitchen Sink. From an appetizer menu that includes oyster rockefeller, to a full breakfast menu, to burgers, sandwiches, wings, entrees, salads and crazy sides, there's plenty to choose from. I'd love to try the breakfast burger, constructed with a half pound burger topped with Muenster cheese, bacon, a hash brown patty and one egg cooked to order. The muffuletta sandwich caught my eye also. It's served as a half or whole sandwich because it's so big. Brian and I were told the humble pie is a go-to item. It's The Kitchen Sink's take on Sheperd's Pie. It's built with jalapeno cornbread, sauteed peppers, onions, shrimp, andouille sausage and Tasso ham and topped with sweet mashed potatoes and bananas topped with etouffee sauce and white cheddar and baked. The sweet fries on the sides portion of the menu are also on my radar the next time I return. They're an ode to Thanksgiving, with sweet potato fries spun in a marshmallow and syrup glaze. They serve as more of a dessert than a side, but paired with the dirty fries make The Kitchen Sink a French fry destination restaurant. I could keep going on about The Kitchen Sink menu, but check it out for yourself at thekitchensink.letseat.at. There is plenty more goodies to peruse, trust me. There is plenty of room for large groups at The Kitchen Sink. Brian and I ponied up to the bar on our visit, but it's really spread out with plenty of booth seating so you won't be on top of your neighbor wherever you sit. The downtown location is pretty new so it wasn't overly busy when we went, but now it's their only restaurant remaining open. They closed their location at 255 Union Blvd., to focus on the downtown crowd. As for cost, it's not too steep. My Al'Key Burger was $10 and Brian's Phat Albert was $11. I also had a charge for upgrading to the dirty fries. You definitely won't go away hungry. If you're in the mood for some glutinous fun, The Kitchen Sink is a hot spot when you gotta eat.
