Complete Fitness lives up to its name “Women need to put themselves first” By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Exercise is not a favorite pastime for many women. Whether the excuse is lack of time, lack of effort or not wanting to get sweaty, Complete Fitness owner Erica Hunt has heard them all. Although she has heard them, generally she doesn’t tolerate them. “Women need to put themselves first. They need to do something good for themselves and we want to encourage them to do that,” said Hunt. After working at Contours Express for a while, Hunt had the opportunity to purchase the business from the previous owner and with only a two-month notice, she did just that. “Members, friends and relatives helped me to repaint and get everything set up the way I wanted the new Complete Fitness to look. My husband was so supportive and we just took a giant leap of faith,” said Hunt. Not only did she freshen the paint and rearrange a few things, she opened the shop with a new attitude about the clientele. “We are much more hands-on. We work out along with our clients. We encourage them, letting them know that they can do it. We have everything under one roof to help women to achieve their goals,” said Hunt. She said there are three things women need to keep them moving toward their goals: 1) motivation, 2) healthy food education, and 3) guidance with workout progress. These three steps are what make Complete Fitness clients see results and keep returning.
resistance, no negative). Third, the majority of benefit derived from any workout comes from negative resistance. Fourth, the only way to increase the workout with hydraulics is to push faster. There is a limit to how fast anyone can push, so after two to three

One of Hunt’s pet peeves is when prospective clients compare Complete Fitness to Curves. She has even created a fact sheet that she hands to prospects with all the reasons that Complete Fitness is not like Curves. First, they have weightbearing equipment, which requires lifting (positive resistance) and lowering (negative resistance). Second, they do not have hydraulic equipment, which only requires pushing and pulling (only positive

months, most people will plateau, or max out. Their doctor-recommended weight-bearing equipment was designed especially for women and can help increase metabolism, lean muscle and bone density. In addition, the trainers customize the clients workout to best fit their current needs and help everyone reach their goals. It is true that Complete Fitness offers
workout stations, where clients use the station for 45 seconds and are notified by the music orator when to move to the next station. The workout takes approximately 30 minutes, not including warm up and cool down time. If clients are interested, Complete Fitness also offers the “Thin & Healthy Total Solution” weight management program. This program has been designed by dieticians and is based around the foods women love to eat. Through healthy foods education and one-on-one motivational training and guidance, the staff will encourage clients to lose weight and keep it off permanently. Hunt does know first hand that the program works, as she was 35 pounds heavier when she first answered an ad for a part time job at Contours Express. “It was hard at first to work out and keep up, but after a short period of time, I started seeing results right along with the clients and I loved how I felt,” said Hunt. There are a number of women who have been members of Complete Fitness for a long time and are very proud of the results they have seen. Elisa M. of Glen Carbon is one of the members that has had a fantastic selftransformation. “Before I joined Complete Fitness, I had settled in my mind that I was now in my “mom” body and things would never be the same. After seeing another member with amazing results, I started believing the impossible. I signed up and by finally getting my “diet” and “exercise” plans in sync and having the support of a food coach and personal trainer, I now have a leaner, healthier, and toned body. I love this “mom” body!” said Elisa M. Janice Bellm of Glen Carbon would have loved to have written several paragraphs on how she feels about Complete Fitness, but she did her best to sum it up in a few sentences. “Complete Fitness is and has been
a WONDERFUL experience for me. The staff has been a GREAT support, with challenge and encouragement. I highly recommend Complete Fitness to women of all ages. I joined CF in February 2010, I consistently followed the program assigned to me and within six months, my goals were attained,” said Bellm. Kathy Fink-Luna of Edwardsville shares her thoughts about Complete Fitness: “Complete Fitness has been such a great benefit for me. I started the program in February and not only have I lost pounds but over 45 inches. I started for the health benefits and I have received so much more. Not only do I feel so much better, but I have gained more confidence and have a greater enjoyment of life. Erica and her staff make you feel welcome and treat you like a friend and I can’t say enough about their expertise in the health and weight management field. I highly recommend Complete Fitness and the program.” This all-female environment has proven to be just the right atmosphere for many local women. They offer a number of membership plans and also offer a couple extra classes. For $5, anyone can join the “drop-in” yoga class on Thursdays, beginning at 7 p.m., lasting one hour, or on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. Anyone is welcome, just dress comfortably and bring a mat. Hunt teaches a “super butt and thighs” class on Tuesdays, at 7 p.m. for those who would like to see stronger legs and a butt lift. She is hoping to offer a Zumba class in the fall. Complete Fitness is located at 1051 Century Dr., in Edwardsville, behind McDonald’s. The phone number is 655-1515. Their hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can visit their Web site at: www.complete-fit.com.

The House of Savoy New chef stirs the pot at Lumiere Place By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
T
he St. Louis metro area cannot get enough Italian cuisine. We are fortunate to have some of the best Italian restaurants in the country and the citizens of the bi-state area heartily patronize each one of them.
The basic concept may be the same, pastas, sauces, seafood, veal, etc., but each chef seems to give a different twist to the dishes they become known for. The House of Savoy, a Lumiere Place restaurant, is certainly a fine example of a chef putting their own special touches on the cuisine they serve, making it all their own. New Executive Chef Paola Bugli is causing a stir with foodies who love fresh and vibrant cuisine. Originally from Florence, Italy, Chef Paola keeps her selections simple, yet elegant and flavorful. At a recent introductory tasting, I was introduced to a few of her signature dishes and there was nothing served that didn’t knock me over. Mussels were the first course, and just the right touch to start things off. Fresh, tender with a little spice, they were some of the best I had ever eaten. They were

Chef Paola Bugli cooked to perfection, not gritty or chewy, and the bit of spice was just right for any palette. Tomato salad was the second course. Taking advantage of the seasonal favorite and adding her touch to the light but delightful dressing she found a great combination. I don’t know if I had ever eaten veal before, but the taste and the texture were amazing, full of flavor and very light. The Mahi Mahi was a perfect
example of how fish should be cooked – lightly breaded and lightly seared. So many times fish is served overcooked or is not breaded or heavily breaded. The fish was served on a bed of risoto that was just the right pairing. It was both light and full of flavor. The desserts were a Torta Caprese and an English custard cream. Just the right flavors to finish off an amazing tasting. The portions were meant to be a taste of her creations, but everyone
walked away from the table unable to take another bite. The highlight of the evening for me was to find out that Cardinal players Jon Jay, Adam Ottavino and Bryan Anderson were at the table with us enjoying the tasting. They, too, left the restaurant praising the flavors of Chef Paola. Glazer ’s Distributors hosted the wine pairings and the selection was fantastic. Some of the selections included feudi san gregorio greco di tufo bianco, la scolca gavi black label, rocca chianti, travaglini gattinara and planeta chardonnay, plus a wonderful dessert sparkling rosa as a finale. Great selections. The House of Savoy is located on the corner at 999 North Second St., in downtown St. Louis, with entrances inside and outside the HoteLumiere. The dress is business casual and the price range for the entrees is from $15 to $25 on average. There is a full bar and wine list. The hours are Sunday through Thursday, 5 p.m to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Parking is free in the Lumiere Place lot and valet parking is available. Dining Delights Icy treats become a pop trend ATLANTA (AP) — The line of people in the sweltering gas station parking lot grows longer as the sun beats down. They aren’t here for gas. One-by-one, each person steps up to a small cart festooned with a multicolored umbrella and is handed what they’ve all come miles to get — what they probably have been craving all day: a frozen pop. And not the red, purple and orange sugary pops from childhood, either. These sweets are full of unexpected ingredients
like cardamom, cilantro, lavender and ginger. They’re iced tea mixed with lemonade — called an Arnold Palmer — or banana pudding with chunks of vanilla wafers. Meet the King of Pops, as he’s known to the throngs of people who stop by his cart in Atlanta each week to buy ice pops loaded with fresh fruit in delectable combinations. Some show up with out-of-town guests, while other bring coolers full of dry ice so they can tote dozens home. “My favorite thing right now is
talking to everyone,” said Steven Carse, 26, who started the King of Pops cart last year when he was laid off from his job as an analyst with AIG in suburban Atlanta. “ E v e r y o n e ’ s u s u a l l y p re t t y excited, or at least in a good mood, if they’re coming to get a popsicle,” he said. “You don’t get too many people that are super mad at the world, so you get people at their
best instead of their worst.” First, there was the cupcake. Then, the doughnut. Now, fancy frozen pops — both purchased and homemade — are taking their turn as the favorite sweet treat of adults looking for a little nostalgia and some tongue-tingling flavors. Pop shops from Austin, Texas, to Nashville, Tenn., to Brooklyn, N.Y., have developed cult followings,
while carts have become staples in farmers markets in Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles. Shoppers at Williams-Sonoma, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target can pick up an array of pop molds, from rocket ships to rabbits. And daring cooks can select recipes from several recent cookbooks or from dozens of recipes available online at sites such as Epicurious.com.

Weeknight cooking gets a makeover NEW YORK (AP) – Weeknight cooking is no time for nuance. Meals must stand and be noticed. They must cut through the clutter of weekday chaos. And they must do it quickly and without fuss, mess, or toil. It’s a simple premise. Let high-flavor ingredients do most of the work. Foods that taste g re a t g o i n g i n t o t h e p o t n e e d less work from you to taste great when they come out. I’m talking about the Parmesan cheeses, balsamic vinegars, jalapenos, chorizos and wasabis of the world. In my cookbook, “High Flavor, Low Labor: Reinventing We e k n i g h t C o o k i n g ” ( t o b e released Sept. 7) ease and flavor rule. Because bland foods just don’t satisfy. We crave assertive foods — rich chocolate cakes, savory chilies and sauces, s h a r p c h e e s e s , b r i g h t , c i t ru s y desserts. These flavors comfort and satisfy. Getting those flavors to the table, and fast, is at the heart of how I cook. And it doesn’t require any special skills or hours at the stove. It’s just a matter of taking good raw i n g re d i e n t s , a d d i n g i n t e n s e l y flavorful stuff, then eating. I’m not big on fancy techniques. I’m not a chef and I’ve never worked in a restaurant. I’m just a working dad who loves good food and won’t sacrifice eating well just because I have a crazy life. Here are some of my favorite highflavor ingredients. All are easy to get and even easier to use. — CINNAMON In the U.S., cinnamon makes us think of sweets and baked goods. In the rest of the world, it’s a savory seasoning that shows up in meat rubs, vegetable stews and curries, as well as sprinkled over grains, such as couscous. And with good reason. Cinnamon imparts a mellow, delicious warmth and aroma. Try a little in your next batch of chili. Or combine it with garlic powder, cumin and salt for an awesome steak or chicken rub. — CITRUS JUICE AND ZEST Citrus effortlessly brightens and sharpens flavors. The j u i c e s a re b e s t i n m a r i n a d e s , d re s s i n g s , s a u c e s , e v e n s o u p s (try a splash in chicken and tomato soups). a n d o f t e n c h e a p e r. A s f o r t h e zest, you can use a vegetable peeler to remove it, but a wandstyle grater is better. — GINGER Fresh ginger (sold as a funky brown root in the produce section) has a peppery sweet flavor and is essential to Asian cooking. Also try it grated over steamed and buttered potatoes or mixed into a vinaigrette. The best place to store fresh ginger is the freezer. Not only does it keep for months, it is easier to grate. And as long as you use a very fine grater, there is no need to peel it first. Dry ground ginger (sold with the other spices) is excellent in meat rubs, chili and vegetable sautes. Its flavor is milder than fresh. Crystallized ginger has been candied. Sold cut into a variety of sizes, it can be eaten as is, or m i n c e d d i c e d , o r g ro u n d . I t ’ s also wonderful finely chopped and simmered in homemade cranberry sauce. — SALT Many foods — even sweets — simply taste flat without a pinch of salt. It doesn’t take much, and it doesn’t take the pricey gourmet stuff. The best
bet is kosher salt, which is inexpensive and easy to pinch. Keep a bowl of it next to the stove. — WINE It’s all about getting sauced. Or is that making sauce? W h i c h e v e r, w i n e i s g r e a t f o r deglazing pans. When wine i s c o o k e d , i t re d u c e s a n d t h e f l a v o r s a re i n t e n s i f i e d . I f t h e wine tastes good, this is good. If the wine tastes bad, this is bad. So while you don’t need to spend a fortune, skip the rotgut. Use whatever you drink. For cooking and drinking, I’m pretty happy with $10 bottles. Use reds for beef- and tomatobased dishes; stick with whites for everything else. — HOT SAUCE This is my secret ingredient in hummus and cheese sauces. Just a dash brightens the other flavors without a d d i n g s i g n i f i c a n t h e a t . Tr y it in macaroni and cheese and mixed into burgers. Use it to perk up mayonnaise for a sandwich or potato salad. Also try it in vinaigrette on a hearty salad (something with m e a t a n d c h e e s e i n i t ) . T h e re are innumerable hot sauces;
experiment until you find a favorite. — ANCHOVIES For many people, anchovies a r e a n o - g o z o n e . To o b a d . T h e y a r e i n c r e d i b l y s a v o r y, inexpensive and easy to use. Best yet, you don’t need to e a t t h e m w h o l e t o a p p re c i a t e them. Place a few in a hot pan and stir around; they will melt into a flavorful paste. Now continue with your saute. You’ll never know the anchovies are there, but the taste will be tremendous. This is great with sauteed hearty greens, such as kale and chard, as well as for pan sauces tossed with pasta. T h e y a l s o c a n b e p u re e d i n t o salad dressing. Because they are salty, be sure to taste as you
cook. — BALSAMIC VINEGAR A good balsamic can be breathtaking. It has an intensely sweet and mouth-puckering flavor that is awesome drizzled with olive oil onto a salad. It m a k e s a g re a t d i p p i n g s a u c e for chunks of Parmesan cheese and dark chocolate. When it comes to red sauce, it can make the difference between so-so and superb. For a great dessert sauce (over shortcake, angel food cake and cheesecake) simmer equal parts chopped fresh strawberries and balsamic vinegar until reduced and thick. For most cooking purposes, inexpensive varieties are fine. For dipping, consider splurging on the good (aged) stuff.

“Eat Pray Love”
This does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. Yet it also offers sufficient emotional heft and self-discovery that it’ll make people feel as if they’ve actually learned something and, perhaps, emerged as better people solely through osmosis. It’s easy to see why Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir became an international phenomenon, even without help from Oprah. Everyone’s looking for something — for answers, for their true and higher purpose — and Gilbert had the fortitude (and the wherewithal) to take off alone on a journey around the world to find herself after her divorce. Having Julia Roberts star as Liz Gilbert in the film version of the best-seller, in theory, only makes it more appealing to an even wider audience. Roberts is radiant as ever, and director and co-writer Ryan Murphy’s adaptation allows her to show off her full range with plenty of hardcore hanky moments. It’s overlong and it wraps up with the kind of romantic comedy cliches that, for the most part, were absent from the first two-thirds. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, though, it’ll make you want to head out for wine and pasta with your girlfriends afterward. Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco star as the various loves of her life. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity. RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Lottery Ticket”
The odds of winning the lottery are what, like, 1 in 175 million? The laughs aren’t quite so hard to come by here, but they’re not a safe bet, either. The feature debut from longtime music video director Erik White, which he co-wrote with Abdul Williams, starts out amiably enough, with a shaggy, shambling vibe. But it eventually devolves into a weirdly violent streak, followed by some seriously heavy-handed sentimentality. Still, the ensemble cast manages to keep things sporadically enjoyable. Rapper-actor Bow Wow is all grown up here as Kevin, a recent high school graduate who’s stuck working at Foot Locker but dreams of creating his own shoe line. “Lottery Ticket” is at its strongest off the top, as Kevin tries to make his way to work at the mall one morning but keeps getting delayed by the random neighbors in his Atlanta housing project. Brandon T. Jackson has a loose, easy energy about him and gets many of the best lines. But when Kevin
September 9, 2010
plays the lottery and wins the $370 million jackpot, everything changes, with people cozying up to him or trying to kill him because he’s now a rich man. And because he wins over the extended July 4 weekend, he must wait three days to cash in. Loretta Devine, Naturi Naughton and Ice Cube co-star. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, language including a drug reference, some violence and brief underage drinking. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Piranha 3D”
Mere words cannot describe how awesomely gnarly this is, how hugely entertaining, and how urgently you must get yourself to the theater to see it. This is not a joke, by the way. This movie is a complete blast. To borrow a phrase from the kind of B-horror flicks to which “Piranha 3D” is such an effective homage: Run, don’t walk. Like “Snakes on a Plane,” which came out in the dead of summer four years ago, “Piranha 3D” knows exactly what it is and does exactly what it should do. It’s about piranhas ... in 3-D. It’s cleverly knowing without collapsing into parody. It makes great use of its extremely random cast, including Elisabeth Shue in an unusually bad-ass role as a sheriff, Ving Rhames as her deputy and Jerry O’Connell as a Joe Francis type. Christopher Lloyd has one great scene in full-on, crazed Christopher Lloyd mode as the resident fish expert. The second you see Eli Roth — playing the emcee at a wet T-shirt contest, no less — you know some hideous fate will befall him. And then there’s Richard Dreyfuss, who makes a very cute cameo off the top. That’s all we’ll say. But the whole point of this kind of movie is the gore, and French director Alexandre Aja finds hilarious and creative ways to kill off his characters — drunk, horny college kids who’ve descended on a lake for spring break. RATED: R for sequences of strong bloody horror, violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language, and some drug use. RUNNING TIME: 82 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
“Flipped”
Rob Reiner’s latest has been billed as a return to form for the director and a companion piece to his “Stand By Me.” Like that film, “Flipped” is a coming-of-age ode to youth cloaked in mid-century Americana (the early 1960s). It’s nostalgic for
nostalgia. There’s charm here and some honest observations of adolescence. But there’s also a willful, cloying datedness to the movie — overly stuffed with period detail like an “Archie” comic strip. It tracks a boy (Callan McAuliffe) and a girl (Madeline Carroll) from 7-years-old to 13, and all the fluctuating emotions in between. The strength of “Flipped” is in its trueness to humdrum adolescence. It’s filled not with extravagant dramas, but instead portrays how seemingly minor happenings take on grand meaning: the tragic tearing down of the cherished sycamore, the terrifying formality of a sit-down dinner, the frightening awkwardness of nearly everything. But it lacks both the darkness and comedy of “Stand By Me” and its device of flipping every scene to show both kids’ perspective drags the film. With Aidan Quinn and Anthony Edwards as the fathers, and John Mahoney as a grandfather. RATED: PG for language and some thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“The Last Exorcism”
One of the scariest movies to come along in a long time — until the last five minutes or so, when it completely falls apart. Director Daniel Stamm’s faux documentary starts out with deadpan delivery and a dry sense of humor, then it turns riveting, then truly frightening, then just plain silly. It’s like it morphs from being a Christopher Guest movie to “The Blair Witch Project.” Until then, the filmmakers keep you guessing as to what’s real and what’s imagined, what’s a disturbing mental disorder and what’s actually demonic possession. And the fact that this Eli Roth production uses all unknown actors helps us get sucked into this eerie world. Evangelical Louisiana preacher Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) has been performing exorcisms for the past 25 years but he knows they’re all a sham. He long ago lost his faith, and for a while has had no qualms about taking money from true believers in the name of supporting his own family. Now, with his conscience weighing on him, he lets a camera crew come behind the scenes to expose his tricks as he “performs” one last exorcism. Fabian finds the balance in his character’s conflicting motivations, and Ashley Bell is extraordinary as the teenager who’s been acting strangely. RATED: PG-13 for disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Movies “The Tillman Story” clears up picture By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press Pat Tillman was many things to many people: a son, brother, husband, friend and, as a player for Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals, a football star who drew cheers for his exciting, physical style. But once he gave up his NFL career to join the Army Rangers in 2002 and then was fatally shot in Afghanistan in 2004, he became something else entirely, something larger than life through his death: a symbol of American patriotism, a poster boy, a crucial part of the government’s message. And that turned him into something he wasn’t. “The Tillman Story” attempts to get to the bottom of what happened the day he was killed by following the exhaustive investigative efforts of Tillman’s family — namely, his mother, Dannie — and, in the process, allows us to get to know who the man himself really was. Director Amir Bar-Lev, whose previous documentaries include the smart, suspenseful “My Kid Could Paint That,” approaches “The Tillman Story” as a bit of a mystery, as well. Tension builds as details emerge and the disparity between lie and truth becomes more glaringly obvious. Sometimes it’s little things, like the moment Tillman and his brother, Kevin, decided to enlist — not immediately after Sept. 11, 2001, as had been depicted, but rather six months later. Sometimes the discrepancies are galling, as in the documented evidence that Tillman didn’t want the very military funeral he was given; his widow, Marie, describes being forced to comply with the wishes of military brass.
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by The Weinstein Company, Pat Tillman, left, and his brother Kevin are shown in a still from, “The Tillman Story.” And sometimes there’s just flatout deception, as in the military’s attempts to cover up the fact that Tillman died as a result of friendly fire, something that was known a week after his death but didn’t come out until some five weeks had passed. A memo written by then-Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal and leaked to The Associated Press shows that knowledge of this possibility went all the way to the White House, but it was
kept quiet for a while to avoid “public embarrassment.” Not all of this is new. But Bar-Lev thoroughly and methodically lays it all out and lets the information speak for itself. He takes interviews with the men who were there that day and reams of documents (the military tried to overload the Tillman family with over 3,000 pieces of paper, many of their details redacted) and presents
them in a clear-eyed, streamlined way. Most importantly, he lets the emotion shine through on its own without overdramatization. Obviously, there is enough inherent heartache and frustration here. But getting to know the Tillman family — and through them, Pat — provides inspiration. At the funeral, with all its proper military pomp and circumstance, youngest brother Richard hopped on stage in a T-
shirt and jeans, holding a beer and dropping F-bombs. Dannie, meanwhile, was tireless in making phone calls and poring over documents filled with jargon intended to intimidate her. And middlebrother Kevin, who was part of the same mission as Tillman that fateful day, has only spoken once publicly about his brother’s death — before a congressional committee — but he did so eloquently and forcefully.
Two good films help usher in autumn By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge George Clooney isn’t necessarily a great patriot in his new film, The American. It’s a label, that title, that many of the native Italians use to refer to his character during his stay in their beautiful country. The lovely lady characters in this film, and there are several knockouts, refer to him as Mister Butterfly after both his fascination with the insect and the ornate tattoo on the back of his naked neck. Either way, you can think of him as an assassin, though killing people isn’t his preference. He’d rather just be the wellcompensated gunsmith meeting their frequent and bizarre needs. I don’t want to build it up too much, though. “The American” is a big-time drama--very serious and often
September 9, 2010
quite slow (read: boring). The American’s real name is probably not Jack, though that’s the one he uses over clipped phone conversations with his shady handler. He’s Edward when chatting up the client, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), or the prostitute, Clara (Violante Placido), he favors. H e ’ s p u re l y G e o rg e C l o o n e y throughout this picture, using a combination of the finer elements of Syriana, with a dash of selfloathing and massive introspection. After an brief and explosive opening sequence, George relocates to a quaint, intricately laid out Italian mountain village where he spends his day locked in seclusion, building a rifle from spare parts and machine tooled elements he hones in his hermitage. At night, he ventures out to seek either his enemies (Swedes, in this case) or consolation (Clara, in an embarrassing, cheesy brothel).
Mathilde’s rationale for needing such a weapon is never shared, though we get the feeling that the target is political and famous--an odd match for the setting of this film. The closest thing to a celebrity this sleepy hamlet has to offer is the local priest, Father Benedetto ( P a o l o B o n a c e l l i ) , a t ro u b l e d spiritual advisor who has a lot to say about each person he meets and very little about his own checkered past. He wasn’t always a man of God and has struggled with his vows, keeping few completely intact. Look for each character to weigh heavily in the events that spring from the action. ••• “The American” runs 103 minutes and is rated R for sexual content, nudity, and violence. I give this film two stars out of four. •••
Another great film of the week is “Get Low,” a real scene-chewer starring Bill Murray as a shyster undertaker, Lucas “Slingblade” Black as his assistant, and Robert Duvall as a mountain man bent on celebrating his funeral before needing unpleasant death as a prerequisite. In 1930s Tennessee, Felix Bush (Duvall) finds that as he ages, his friends seem to grow fewer and fewer. He’s the last of a dying generation and it saddens him, even forty years into his selfimposed isolation atop a mountain amongst virgin timber. It’s when he sees no other options that he decides the time has come to chuck the whole kit and caboodle and be done with it. His plan is to offer his significant acreage in the form of a lottery. Tell a story about his hermit-like mystique, earn the
right to buy a ticket, and then have a chance at the great prize. What results is a whimsical approach of polite (but ill-meaning) society on a nasty (but well-intentioned) individual. Duvall’s character is slow and guttural, but that comes from years of hate, aimed inward, after a tragic accident causes his love life to spin out of control. It’s a showcase against the motor-mouthed Murray and the awkward, coming-into-his-own style of Black. The movie’s a chuckle, but great to get together some actors that don’t normally run in the same circles, including Sissy Spacek as the sister of Duvall’s lady love. ••• “Get Low” runs 103 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some thematic material and brief violent content. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Fall will see a wide variety of films LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood aims to help you escape from all that lousy economic news in the real world this fall, with a lineup heavy on fun and fantasy. But Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas won’t let audiences completely off the hook. They’re putting Gordon Gekko, poster boy for greed a generation ago, back into theaters to remind fans about the sharks that got us into this mess. Stone’s “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” — a followup to the 1987 hit that won Douglas the bestactor Academy Award — picks up with ex-con Gekko broke, barred from the stock market, alienated from his family and trying to find a place for himself in 2008 as the global economy races toward chaos. “You’re in the joint for eight years, coming back without your fortune and the ability to trade. He’s estranged from his daughter, he’s lost a son while he’s in prison,” Douglas said. “Initially, Gordon’s more vulnerable.” The key word is initially. Gekko still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. The “Wall Street” sequel is among September and October releases arriving as a prelude to the big holiday season, whose heavy-hitters include the latest in the “Harry Potter,” “Chronicles of Narnia” and “Meet the Parents” franchises. H e re ’ s a l o o k a t h i g h l i g h t s among films debuting in early fall: FAMILY STUFF: Zack Snyder (”300”) directs the animated adventure “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” based on Kathryn Lasky’s children’s books about owls on a mythic quest against evil. The animated comedy “Alpha and Omega” features the voices of Justin Long and Hayden Panettiere in a tale of two wolves on a journey home after park rangers move them halfway across country. “Secretariat” gives wholesome treatment to the story of the 1973 Triple Crown winner, with Diane Lane as the housewife who takes over her ailing father’s stables and guides the horse to triumph. Lane was 8 years old at the time and traveling outside the United States with a theater company, yet she recalls the story of Secretariat gripping people around the world. “The export of Secretariat to the rest of the world, coming from the American news wire, was really something. It was a great sigh of relief compared to all the other offerings we brought to the global news at that time,” Lane said. “I had such a crush on Secretariat as a little girl. He was like Pegasus to me at the time. I’ve always had a crush on that species. There’s

something about horses and girls.” FUNNY STUFF: Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver star in “You Again,” a comedy about a woman and her mother coping with their old high school rivals at a family wedding. Other comic tales include: “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” about a stressed teen (Keir Gilchrist) who finds a mentor (Zach Galifianakis) at a mental clinic; Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel as a reluctant pair forced to care for their orphaned goddaughter in the romance “Life as We Know It;” “Easy A,” a comic twist on “The Scarlet Letter,” with Emma Stone as a teen turning a rumor about losing her virginity to her own advantage; and Stephen Frears’ “Tamara Drewe,” about a former ugly ducking (Gemma Arterton) who returns to her British hometown a striking beauty. SERIOUS STUFF: The sober British drama “Never Let Me Go” reunites Keira Knightley with close pal Carey Mulligan, who got her start with a small part in Knightley’s “Pride & Prejudice.” “My first job was with Keira when I was 18, and she was the star of the movie. It’s really amazing that I get to play alongside her now in a kind of more level way,” said Mulligan, who also co-stars in the “Wall Street” sequel. “Never Let Me Go” features Mulligan, Knightley and Andrew Garfield (recently cast in the title role of the next “Spider-Man” movie) as three boarding school friends raised for a stark destiny in an alternate-reality Britain. Among other dramatic offerings: David Fincher ’s “The
Social Network,” featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake in a drama about the founders of Facebook; Hilary Swank in “Conviction,” the story of a woman who embarks on an 18year crusade to clear her brother (Sam Rockwell) of murder; and Woody Allen’s latest mix of comedy and drama, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” with Naomi Watts, Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Jones, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas and Freida Pinto as Londoners struggling with old and new relationships. Matt Damon and director Clint Eastwood, who collaborated on last year ’s “Invictus,” reunite for “Hereafter,” a drama about a Frenchwoman, a British boy and an American man with unusual connections to death whose lives gradually intersect. Damon said the film seeks answers about the most serious question — is there an afterlife waiting for people when they die? “I have to believe there is. I guess I choose to believe there is,” Damon said. “If I’m wrong and the light’s just going to go out, then I’ll be none the wiser. But it seems like a pretty cruel twist of fate if it’s this and only this. I like to believe there’s a bigger point.” SCARY STUFF: Three horror franchises re t u r n : “ P a r a n o r m a l A c t i v i t y 2,” a followup to last year ’s supernatural sensation; “Saw 3D,” with survivors of diabolical killer Jigsaw finding new terror as they seek solace from a self-help guru; and “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” with Milla Jovovich back on the job killing undead zombies. Hollywood’s love affair with vampires continues with “Let Me

In,” adapted from the best-seller “Let the Right One In,” about the friendship between a bullied boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and a young bloodsucker (Chloe Moretz). Other frightening tales include “Buried,” with Ryan Reynolds as an American contract driver in Iraq who wakes up buried alive in a coffin; “My Soul to Take,” Wes Craven’s tale of a serial killer who may have returned from the dead; and “Devil,” about a group of people beset by supernatural terror after they’re trapped in an elevator. MONEY STUFF: B e n A ff l e c k p e r f o r m s i n a couple of money-related dramas. In “The Company Men,” Affleck stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner in a story of executives coping with hard times after their downsizing company lets them go. Affleck directs and stars in “The Town,” playing a bank robber who falls for a branch manager (Rebecca Hall) his gang took hostage on their last job. “In ‘Company Men,’ we’re going down the economic ladder, and in ‘The Town,’ we’re trying to steal our way up,” Affleck said. Affleck deliberately chose not to act in his directing debut, “Gone
Baby Gone.” With “The Town,” he joked that at least he knew the director and star would not clash. “There was a lot of harmony between the director and the lead actor on this movie,” Affleck said. “I knew as a director that I would always be on time, I would always be cooperative, and our tastes would always be in sync.” Affleck pal Damon narrates Charles Ferguson’s documentary “Inside Job,” a sweeping chronicle of the 2008 economic crisis. Amid that crisis, Stone and Douglas unleash Gekko for their “Wall Street” sequel. Estranged from his daughter (Mulligan), Gekko ingratiates himself with her fiance (Shia LaBeouf), a young investment whiz who falls under his future father-in-law’s spell. LaBeouf said today’s climate as depicted in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” makes 1980s Gekkostyle greed look like child’s play. “We’re living in the epitome of greed now more so than ever,” LaBeouf said. “Greed where you have people with absolutely no scruples, and you’re dealing with money on a totally different level. ... These are hustlers who could sell water to a whale. It’s cutthroat in a different way. It’s a totally different business now.”

The Big To-Do
Party store bringing glass art to Edwardsville By DEBBIE SETTLE Of the Edge To-Do’s, The Ultimate Party Store, is hosting The Big To-Do, a show and sale celebrating local glass artisans on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A large white tent will be set up between the To-Do’s store and McDonald’s on Troy Road so interested visitors should not miss the location. The will allow the event to take place rain or shine, so come out and enjoy. T h e B i g To - D o w i l l f e a t u re handmade lampwork beads, fusedglass art, glass jewelry and glass pendants from 11 local vendors.
The Saint Louis Lampworker ’s Society will present lampworking demonstrations, in which artists make delicately detailed glass beads with an open flame and Jon
Branton will demonstrate glass blowing with an open torch. Following are some of the artists and their glass companies which will be featured in the show: Faye Malench – “Glass Niche” Teri Wathan – “Hothead Beads” Lendy Middendorf – “Moldy Glass” Fred Linders – “Fire Under Glass: Emily Finnegan – “Finnegan Designs” Michelle Mindrup Strader & Carmen Schenato – “Schoozles” Joan Cross – “Aquareebe” To - D o ’ s o w n e r K a t i e E l ro d , who is a member of the Saint L o u i s L a m p w o r k e r ’ s S o c i e t y, is excited about hosting The Big To-Do. “Being a local small business owner myself, I believe in supporting other locals – both businesses and artisans. It just seemed like a perfect match. I have a great location for an event and the artists have some wonderful products. Everything at this event is handmade by the artisans themselves, and no two items will be exactly alike due to the nature of the process. All of it is made in the U.S.A., unlike the things that you can find in some of the big chain stores, and I want to help Americans discover how easy it is to support American businesses and artists,” says Elrod. “In fact, you might be surprised to
find that your neighbor is one of our artisans.” Elrod enjoys glasswork but with her business, To-Do’s, being very busy, she wasn’t able to create any projects for the show. The element of surprise Edwardsville Art Center showcases the versatility of tin By ANN NICCUM aniccum@edwpub.net The latest exhibit at the Edwardsville Arts Center displays art work from more than 20 artists from all across the country. EAC Exhibition Committee member Dan Anderson said the show titled, “Tin, The Element of Surprise” opened with a reception on Sept. 3. Anderson said it will feature artists who utilize tin as a medium in their artwork. “Whether used for its color, text or imagery, to make a political statement or social commentary, tin is a versatile material that a number of contemporary artists are utilizing in the creation of their artwork,” Anderson said. “As interest in this medium grows, the Edwardsville Arts Center chose to highlight
the wide range of creativity and vision of artists using it in their work in this one-of-akind, invitational group exhibit.” Anderson said the show will feature 23 artists. Artists include: Robbie Barber, of Waco, Texas; Harriete Estel Berman, of San Mateo, Calif.; Teri Blond of San Antonio, Texas; Kat Cole, Tim Lazure, Marissa Saneholtz and Robert Ebendorf of Greenville, N.C.; Margaret Couch Cogswel, of Penland, N.C.; Bobby Hansson, of Risin Sun, Md.; Jane Harrison, of Kinston, N.C.; Judith Hoyt, of New Paltz, N.Y.; Donna McCullough, of Westminster, Md.; Tedd McDonah, of Tempe, Ariz.; Kim Overstreet and Robin Kranitzky, of Richmond, Va.; Bryan Peterson, of Bozeman, Mont.; Leonard Streckfus, of Upperco, Md.; Robert Villamagna, of Wheeling W.Va.; Ellen Wieske and J. Playground of the rich and famous now open to everyone By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge You don’t have to be rich to visit Jekyll Island, Ga. But you did. One of Georgia’s Golden Isles, Jekyll Island is located between Savannah and the Florida border along a stretch of the Atlantic Coast unsurpassed in beauty. About 2 miles wide and 22 miles long, Jekyll Island provides visitors with a near-perfect blend of history and nature in a setting where golf balls and alligators peacefully coexist. But the story is the thing. Back in 1886, Jekyll Island was purchased by a group of New Yorkbased millionaires to be used as a winter hunting lodge. Those millionaires included J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Vanderbilt and Marshall Field. Their “lodge,” the Jekyll Island Club, was unlike any in the world, offering such amenities as electricity and indoor plumbing when such luxuries were unheard of in much of Georgia. It was the playground of the rich. For decades, the Club was the place to be during the winter months, but the Great Depression took its toll and World War II, which
drained the labor pool dry, put an end to the fun. The Jekyll Island Club was purchased by the state of Georgia in 1946 and three years later, the Jekyll Island-State Park Authority was created to govern and manage the island. The Jekyll Island Club was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and ebbed and flowed as a resort under a number of different owners. It wasn’t until 1986, when private investors bought the Club, that it was restored to its original beauty, eventually reopening as the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. That hotel, with 157 rooms in a wide array of configurations, now serves as the centerpiece of the island’s historic district. The Jekyll Island Club Hotel, which can boast rooms slept in by William Rockefeller and Robert
Redford, is a destination in its own right, sitting on the banks of the Intercoastal Waterway. The buildings that once supported the club – the old infirmary, the power house – have been restored and are part of the historic district, although each has a new role. The island has grown up around the Club and today offers a number of activities to keep visitors – young and old – occupied for days. There’s a miniature golf course in addition to three 18-hole courses and a nine-hole, historic course. Jekyll Island is also renowned as a tennis mecca of sorts as its clay courts have been recognized with awards from Tennis Magazine and the United States Tennis Association. Summer Waves Water Park keeps youngsters happy with 11 acres on which visitors can slip, slide, splash and dash. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center
provides state-of-the-art care to sick and injured sea turtles who, hopefully, are returned to the ocean after their rehabilitations. There are carriage rides, kayaking and bird watching opportunities and, of course, the beach. Jekyll Island’s beach offers the white sands of Florida without the crowds. It’s not much for shelling or surfing, but if you want to actually swim in the Atlantic Ocean, this is the place to do it. A handful of hotels and resorts line the beach, but don’t spoil it. The abundance of Spanish moss and palm trees give the island a Southern, yet tropical feel. Because the island is operated as a state park, visitors are charged $5 upon every entry. On the flip side, development is kept in check, which has prevented Jekyll Island from becoming dotted with neon-screaming fast food restaurants and souvenir shops. In fact, the island’s first and only gas station is scheduled to open later this fall. Jekyll Island is a well-kept secret and that’s understandable. Those who have discovered it probably don’t want to share it. For more information, visit www. jekyllisland.com.

Travel Travel briefs Preservation group backs Gettysburg casino plan GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A proposal to build a new casino near the Gettysburg battlefield has picked up support from a historic preservation association that aims to protect the battlefield from development. L a s t w e e k , t h e G e t t y s b u rg Battlefield Preservation Association announced its support for the p rop o s a l t o t u r n a n e x i s t i n g conference center into a casino with 600 slot machines and 50 gaming tables near the historic Civil War site. Other groups have weighed in. The national commander of the American Legion calls the proposal “a national disgrace” while the head of the local American Legion post has remained neutral. The proposed Mason-Dixon Resort & Casino is competing with three other applicants for Pennsylvania’s final resort casino license. The state Gaming Control Board will hold a hearing on the proposal on August 31.
SeaWorld fined $75,000 for whale trainer’s death ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The federal job safety agency fined SeaWorld Orlando $75,000 on M o n d a y f o r t h re e v i o l a t i o n s uncovered while investigating the February death of a trainer who was grabbed by a killer whale and dragged underwater. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration categorized the most serious violation as “willful,” or showing indifference or intentional disregard for employee safety. That citation, carrying a $70,000 penalty, was for exposing workers to drowning hazards when interacting with killer whales. The agency proposes not allowing trainers to have any physical contact with the killer whale responsible for trainer Dawn Brancheau’s death in February unless protected by a physical barrier. It also suggests that trainers not play with other killer whales at the park, either in the water or out of water, unless they are protected by a barrier or deck. The second citation, deemed serious, was for failing to install a stairway railing system beside the stage in Shamu Stadium. That citation carried a $5,000 penalty. The third citation was considered “other-than-serious” and was for failing to have weather-protected electrical receptacles at the stadium. That citation didn’t have a penalty. S e a Wo r l d s p o k e s m a n F r e d Jacobs said the park will contest the citation.

“SeaWorld disagrees with the unfounded allegations made by OSHA today,” Jacobs said in a statement.
One letter on a plane ticket says a lot about you NEW YORK (AP) — There are a few bits of information to pay close attention to on an airline ticket: the flight number, gate number and boarding time. Fare basis code? Not a common concern. But the single-letter code can make a big difference in some parts of the travel experience, even though most passengers don’t pay any attention. A fare basis code further divides passengers into classes based on how much they paid and how far out they booked. There are about a dozen in coach class alone. When you’re on the plane, there’s no difference in service between a passenger who has a “Y” or “Q” — a full-fare and a discounted ticket — if you’re both in coach. But the codes are still important: Some indicate your trip isn’t eligible for frequentflier miles or an upgrade; others tell a ticket agent where to rank you on a standby list. Deciphering the code The letters airlines assign to

certain levels of coach can vary widely, but a couple are universal. “Y” class is a widespread denotation for the highest class in coach among most major airlines, according to Jami Counter, senior director of TripAdvisor Flights and a former pricing strategist at American Airlines. These tickets are usually f u l l y re f u n d a b l e , l a s t - m i n u t e coach fares purchased mainly by business travelers. They’re the most expensive tickets, but they have the most flexibility. Some others that are generally used among the airlines: “J” or “C” usually indicate business class. “F” and “P” denote first class or premium. Why are the codes there? Airline tickets weren’t always so complicated. Codes were developed as the airlines created complex systems that let them make more money per ticket. The fare basis code is found on most e-tickets by itself, but it can also be shown as the first letter of a longer code with a mix of other letters and numbers. The rundown The good news: The better code you have, the better your chance of not getting bumped. You also might receive more frequent flier miles if you’re in the top tiers. The bad news: The main way to improve your code

is to pay more. Most leisure travelers wouldn’t think of forking over double or triple the usual fare for a refundable ticket or more perks. But there are ways to avoid hassles without paying through the roof. One way to prevent bumping with a discounted ticket? Check in early. In addition to ranking by price, airlines also prioritize passengers by check-in order. Get in the habit of checking in online 24 hours before your flight. You can even check bags online through most airlines, and just drop them off at a counter when you arrive at the airport. But fare classes aren’t just important when it comes to keeping your seat. Fare classes are also key if you want to upgrade your ticket. Generally, “Y,” “B” and “M” are the only coach fares that are upgradeable. You can search by fare class directly on most airline websites. If building up frequent flier miles is important to you, avoid auction tickets on sites like Hotwire and Priceline where you name your own price, or don’t see all the flight information before you book. Those tickets, like Hotwire “Hot Rates,” are often ineligible for frequent flier miles. The cheapest tickets doled out to certain travel agents also aren’t always eligible, either. It’s important in these cases to always read the
fine print, because whether you’re going to the next state or around the world, you may be out of luck.
Paddleboat cruises coming to Philly waterfront PHILADELPHIA (AP) — There’s a new attraction expected soon on Philadelphia’s waterfront: a 260-foot paddlewheel riverboat replica. The newly dubbed Philadelphia Belle arrived at Penn’s Landing on Tuesday amid fanfare that included a Mummers string band and a Ben Franklin impersonator. A group of investors led by Norfolk, Va.-based CI Travel bought the steamship three months ago and chose Philadelphia as the spot where they wanted to make it a tourist attraction. The ship is expected to open for dinner cruises and entertainment this fall. The ship formerly was named the Mississippi Belle II. It just completed the 3,200-mile journey from its former home on the Mississippi River and will get final renovations in Philadelphia. Investors group vice president Tom D’Amato says the investors chose Philadelphia because of the potential of the city’s waterfront.

Dr. Zhivegas will perform at the Criterium Kick-Off at 5 p.m. Sepot. 11 in City Park. in Edwardsville City Park, featuring food, drink and live music will begin at 5:00 p.m., with regional favorite Dr. Zhivegas taking the stage at 7. The Kick-Off event is sponsored by Dierbergs, Big Daddy’s and Madison Mutual. On Sunday, Sept. 12, more than 500 cyclists and 200 volunteers will descend on Downtown Edwardsville, rain or shine, for the Wells Fargo Advisors Edwardsville Rotary Criterium, a series of fast-paced professional and amateur bicycle races held on the streets of Downtown Edwardsville. The Criterium features a $10,000 purse, one of the largest oneday payouts in the St. Louis region. Cyclists and spectators who want more information or want to register for the race on race day can stop by the Race Headquarters, located in the Big Daddy’s Parking lot on Main Street. Preregistration is also available on-line at www. edwardsvillecriterium.com FREE KIDS RACE: A t 1 2 : 1 5 p . m . o n S u n d a y, f o u r F R E E Kids Races will take place in the following categories: Ages 3 & Under, Ages 4-6, Ages 7-9, and Ages 10-11. Kids will ride on a short version of the course and must wear helmets and be registered to participate. Registration will take place for the Kids Race from 9:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. WHAT TO EXPECT: Expect fast-paced bicycle races on a short seven-tenths of a mile course. There will be seven separate races beginning at 8:30 a.m. Here’s how it works: Cyclists follow the same route for a pre-determined amount of time, followed by a pre-determined number of laps. (For instance: 25 minutes+5 laps). During that time they will attempt to jockey for position. The first to cross the finish line on the last lap is the winner. For added excitement, officials will award $50 primes (pronounced preems)
during the race to winners of selected laps. BEST PLACES TO WATCH THE RACE: Most of the action will take place on Main Street near the Start/Finish Line. But the corner of Main and Vandalia will definitely be an action-packed area as the curve is tight and the cyclists will be starting a significant straightaway. The area in front of Ninian Edwards Plaza and TheBANK of Edwardsville may also be an interesting place to watch as the cyclists will be traveling on a narrow portion of the route AND setting up for one of the toughest corners. The final corner before the Finish Line at St. Louis and Main will also provide a great vantage point for spectators. Hosted by the Edwardsville Rotary Club, the goals of the Criterium are to raise money for community-enhancing projects and create a signature event for Edwardsville and Rotary. “This is not just an event for cyclists and cycling fans,” said Race Director SJ Morrison. “This is an exciting, community-wide event for spectators of all ages. Some of these cyclists will be careening through Downtown Edwardsville at speeds of 35 mph or more.” For more information, cyclists and spectators can call SJ Morrison at 618-558-3062. Details for all of the events are posted on-line at www. edwardsvillecriterium.com or on Facebook. I n a d d i t i o n t o We l l s F a rg o A d v i s o r s , presenting sponsors include: The City of Edwardsville, and the Simmons Law Firm Miles for Meso event. Individual races are sponsored by: Richards Brick Company, TheBANK of Edwardsville, Metro Tri-Club, SIUE, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Metro East Park & Recreation District. Tube Time New fall shows Alton Symphony Orchestra Leon Burke worth watching With Maestro PRESENTS NEW YORK (AP) — So many shows! So little time! You already have to keep up with your slate of favorite returning shows. Now the networks expect you to carve out more hours to sample their 22 newcomers. What to do? Prioritize, of course. Here are some of new series that deserve an early look: • “Hellcats” (CW; premieres Sept. 8). It’s almost laughably formulaic, but the formula works like a charm. Gorgeous prelaw student Marti scorns her university’s cheerleading squad. “I don’t trust any culture that builds pyramids — human or otherwise,” she scoffs. But suddenly she needs to join the squad to keep her all-important scholarship. As luck would have it, Marti (Aly Michalka) was a gymnastics champ in high school. But even as she enters the notaltogether-embracing world of the Hellcats, her scholarship still isn’t assured: continued funding for the Hellcats is in question. So is Marti’s continued presence on the squad, thanks to a certain scheming rival. But in the meantime, golly, can those Hellcats dance! “Hellcats” is one part youth melodrama, one part “Glee” in skimpy spandex. • “Nikita” (CW, premieres Sept. 9). It’s payback time for Nikita, who is on the run from the secret government agency that trained her as a spy and an assassin — and now wants her dead. “I’m gonna take you apart, piece by piece, mission by mission,” vows this petite powerhouse (played by Maggie Q). Meanwhile, Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) is a new recruit in the sinister, mysterious Division. She wants out, too. An actionpacked reboot of the 1990 film and subsequent USA network series, this “Nikita” is a slick celebration of conspiracy and sexy gals who mean to put a stop to it. • “Hawaii Five-O” (CBS; premieres Sept. 20). From the opening titles with the timeless rocking theme to the nickname “Danno,” this new version of the 1970s original is a miracle of souped-up, loving restoration. Alex O’Loughlin plays simmering Steve McGarrett, who’s got a score to settle with some very bad people. The governor of Hawaii gives him carte blanche to set up a justice team, which includes kvetching New Jersey transplant Danny “Danno” Williams (Scott Caan), as well as Chin Ho Kelly (“Lost” alumnus Daniel Dae Kim) and his sexy, two-fisted sister, Kono (Grace Park). The pilot is a fast-paced, eye-popping, modern-day homage. Be there! Aloha! • “Lone Star” (Fox; premieres Sept. 20). A charismatic con man is married to one beautiful woman and shacking up with another, deep in the heart of Texas. Bob truly loves them both.
September 9, 2010
He also loves the opportunity this double life affords him to pull scams in two communities — as long as he can keep his two worlds separate. “Lone Star” would make a dandy soap opera, which it is. But it’s more: a solid drama of a man in conflict who needs it all. The pilot is outstanding as it introduces this fall’s budding breakout star, James Wolk, as the schemer you root for. Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights”) and Eloise Mumford (“Mercy”) are Bob’s unsuspecting mates. It’s been called a blend of “Dallas” and “Friday Night Lights.” Judging from the pilot, it’s the fall’s best new series. • “The Event” (NBC; premieres Sept. 20). Do you miss “Lost”? Do you wish last season’s “FlashForward” had been better? Check out “The Event,” the lone new entry in the serial thriller genre. Boasting a large ensemble cast, far-flung locations and helter-skelter time sequence, “The Event” demands a week-to-week commitment for the viewer to have any chance of making sense of the conspiracy that rages at its core. Certainly the pilot episode gives you fair warning; it’s anything but selfcontained.

While the house currently generates income it could easily be converted back to a single family “show piece” Victorian styled residence or commercial space. In addition to the house there is an open front corrugated metal “loafing” style building to the back for parking or storage. The foundation is native stone and houses a large easily accessed basement. Call the auctioneer for a private viewing. Auction Terms: Seller confirmation of final bid is required. The successful bidder will enter into a Real Estate contract at the close of the auction. In addition a deposit (non-refundable earnest money) shall be made with the auctioneer with guaranteed funds in the amount of $5,000 which will be applied at closing. Additionally a 3% Buyers-Premium will be added to the final successful bid price. This will be added to the final bid and paid at closing. Final settlement will be in approximately 30 days from auction date upon delivery of a clear and merchantable deed. All announcements made by the auctioneer or his firm or the seller take precedence over earlier statements or claims. All information is presented in good faith but the auctioneer and seller do not warrant or represent that the information provided is complete or accurate. All inspections, due diligence and determinations are the sole responsibility of the buyer. All financing must be in order before the auction. Renters rights prevail.
