Elementary, my dear Watson Saint Louis Science Center to host Sherlock Holmes exhibit For The Edge Footprints, splatter patterns and the powers of observation mark the journey through The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, opening October 9, 2014 at The Saint Louis Science Center. The interactive experience combines science with history and culture to bring to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories. Museum visitors will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most mysterious crimes. His practices and techniques, created in the mind of doctor-turnedauthor Conan Doyle, changed the way police work was conducted and remain in practice today. The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes features original manuscripts and period artifacts, investigative tools influenced and used by Sherlock Holmes, and interactive crime-solving opportunities. Guests will be transported into Sherlock Holmes’ London to solve a crime in a world filled with innovation and experimentation – and just receiving its introduction to his groundbreaking methods. “Sherlock Holmes was the consummate student – always curious, observing and investigating. He used his extensive knowledge in chemistry and in all areas of science to solve baffling mysteries through observation, reason and deduction. In doing so, Sherlock Holmes became one of the most popular, fictional characters ever to be embraced by both readers and movie-goers,” says Christian Greer, Chief Education and Programs Officer at the Saint Louis Science Center. “So to use that popularity in a science-based exhibition that challenges visitors to use scientific methods to solve a mystery – well, it’s elementary!” “The Conan Doyle Estate can’t reme mber a n u n d e r t a k i n g a s involved and exciting as this one,” says the Estate’s U.S. representative Jon Lellenberg. “Museum visitors will experience the scientific

The galleries in the exhibition include: Dr. Conan Doyle’s Study – Conan Doyle, a scientifically educated physician, was a curious and tireless investigator his entire life. Guests will discover his

world first as a medical student at Edinburgh University, then as an apprentice at Royal Surgeons’ Hall, next as a practicing physician in Southsea, Portsmouth, and finally as a creator of literary genius who moved to London in the early 1890s and became a full-time author. On display will be an original manuscript, letters, and illustrations through which guests will gain perspective on the experiences that influenced Conan Doyle in creating Sherlock Holmes. Science and History – Sherlock Holmes solved mysteries using observation and solid scientific experimentation, something realworld detectives (police or private) had not fully embraced. Guests will participate in experiments of their

own by exploring the developments in science and technology in the 1890s -- developments that are still highly relevant today. Supported by forensics expert and crime historian E. J. Wagner, author of The Science of Sherlock Holmes, the exhibition digs into real forensic studies in order to demonstrate the link between the Sherlock Holmes stories, detective science and the world of today. Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street – Guests will visit Sherlock Holmes’ and Dr. Watson’s sitting room at 221B Baker Street, London, where their investigations began and concluded – a room looming large in popular imagination around the globe ever since the first Sherlock Holmes tale, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887. Poet Vincent Starrett said of the famed room: “Here dwell together still two men of note / Who never lived and so can never die . . . Here, though the world explode, these two survive / And it is always eighteen ninety-five.” Become a Detective – Guests will exchange the museum map for a book full of clues while hot on a trail to solve a remarkable murder. Using their own powers of observation, guests can crack a new Sherlock Holmes mystery written exclusively for this exhibition by Daniel Stashower, the acclaimed writer and award-winning Conan Doyle biographer (author of Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle and co-editor of Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters) and the author of new Sherlock Holmes stories as well. C u l t u re o f S h e r l o c k – P o p culture enthusiasts will enjoy the exhibition’s final gallery, housing a robust collection of all things “Sherlockian,” ranging from vintage Sherlock Holmesthemed card games, comics, and

magazines, to radio scripts, and movie and television show props and costumes. Featured are hero props from the Warner Bros.’ current Sherlock Holmes movies set in the Victorian era, alongside c o s t u m e s , p ro p s a n d b e h i n d the scenes tools from the hit CBS television shows Elementary and the BBC’s Sherlock, both of which set Sherlock Holmes in the present day. The exhibition will offer museum guests the most comprehensive display anywhere of Sherlock Holmes as portrayed in popular imagination over the last 126 years since his creation. The conclusion of the exhibition celebrates today’s real forensic scientists and their exceptional work. The exhibition is brought to the Saint Louis Science Center as the result of a unique arts partnership between Exhibits Development Group (EDG); Geoffrey M. Curley + Associates; Conan Doyle Estate Ltd.; the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry; and the Museum of London. To purchase tickets, please call 314.289.4424. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"If I Stay"

'Tis clearly the season for exceedingly attractive young adults in mortal peril. Just two months ago, we had the charming Shailene Woodley as a teen cancer patient, fighting for time while learning about life and love in "The Fault in Our Stars." Last week, we had Aussie heartthrob Brenton Thwaites in "The Giver," risking his life for the sake of truth and memory. And now we have the sweet Chloe Grace Moretz in "If I Stay," spending the movie in a state of limbo between life and death, after a catastrophic accident shatters her comfy world. Like all successful YA novels brought to screen, "If I Stay," based on the 2009 teen tearjerker by Gayle Forman, brings with it a ready-made audience. All the filmmakers need do is cast the most appealing couple they can find and stay faithful to the story, and the kids should be happy. It's safe to say director R.J. Cutler has done that — Moretz is beautiful to look at, and as her rocker boyfriend, Jamie Blackley is satisfyingly sensitive and hunky. And they have good lips. This is one screen couple that knows how to kiss. If only the dialogue worked as well. Shauna Cross' script lapses into syrupy platitudes far too often. Just as a scene is building, you may suddenly feel like you've walked into a life-size Hallmark card. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements and some sexual material." RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Life of Crime"

Some may pine for George Clooney's chin or Scarlett Johansson's lips, but no body part should be more envied than Elmore Leonard's ear. Leonard's dialogue seemed to have walked in off the street. He filled countless pages with the stuff, capturing with preternatural acuity the diverse, often ungrammatical, frequently comic ping-ponging sounds of American voices shooting the breeze. And he did it, like a magician, without showing his hand. "If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it," was one of his 10 rules. He probably would have rewritten these sentences. It's both why Leonard has been so alluring to filmmakers, and why adapting him is so difficult. His talky, screenplayfriendly books have already produced some 20 movies (including "Out of Sight," ''Jackie Brown," ''Get Shorty" and "3:10 to Yuma") and several TV shows (like the pulpy "Justified"). Now, a year after his death, comes the film "Life of Crime," a largely faithful and appropriately admiring adaptation of Leonard's 1978 novel "The Switch." It has three very good things going for it: the crinkled face of John Hawkes, the nasal deadpan of Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) and Jennifer Aniston in the kind of comedic-dramatic part she should have always been playing. Hawkes and Bey play a pair of Detroit criminals — Louis Gara and Ordell Robbie, respectively — who conspire to kidnap the wife, Mickey (Aniston), of a suburban sleaze ball, Frank Dawson (Tim Robbins). Their plan to hold her goes awry when the plot is one-upped by others swirling around Dawson with equally bad motives. With his mistress (Isla Fisher), Dawson has sneaked off to the Bahamas, where he's hiding money skimmed off his business and plotting a divorce. Is getting rid of his wife even a threat? Also interfering on their home abduction is a country-club acquaintance (a mustachioed, cowardly Will Forte), whose ill-conceived romantic pursuit of Mickey brings him calling at precisely the wrong time. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language, some sexual content and violence."

"Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"

After being clonked over the head in 1944's "Murder, My Sweet," Raymond Chandler's immortal private eye Philip Marlowe wryly narrated the experience of being knocked out: "A black pool opened up at my feet. I jumped in." In "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," a belated, 3-D sequel to 2005's "Sin City," cultishly-adored graphic novelist Frank Miller and genre-exploiting director Robert Rodriguez have again jumped right into the same dark abyss Dick Powell's Marlowe fell into, into the same noir sea — or, at least, some hyper-stylized version of it. This is hardboiled on heroin. Both "Sin City" movies are double layers of aesthetic idolatry: Miller, famed for his "Dark Knight" reimagining of Batman, worships at the pulp altar of Chandler and Mickey Spillane, while Rodriguez is slavishly devoted to turning Miller's two-dimensional drawings into cinematic flesh. (Miller's name precedes the film's title and he shares directing credit with Rodriguez.) They each approach their tasks with gusto that can only be admired, even if the results can't. Like its predecessor, "A Dame to Kill For" was made with an almost entirely digital palate, placing actors — Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Eva Green — on a starkly black-and-white canvas in a fictional (but very Los Angeles-like) permanent-midnight metropolis of rampant crime, extreme brutality and skin-baring luridness. It's described with tough-guy poetry like: "the kind of place your father doesn't want to talk about." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Last Days in Vietnam"

There are many differences between America's troubled exit from Iraq and its ramshackle retreat from Vietnam. But the U.S. flight from Saigon as seen in Rory Kennedy's documentary "Last Days in Vietnam" has incredible, unmistakable resonance on the political, ethical and military confusion that occurs when, after years of war, a far-away nation pulls up stakes. These are scenes of a humbled superpower and the terrifying vacuum left behind. South Vietnamese soldiers (allies to the U.S. through years of combat) mobbing the last World Airways flight out of Da Nang as it moves down the runway. Packed refugees crouching around the pool of the U.S. embassy in Saigon. Helicopters being pushed into the ocean so that more could land on a destroyer escort. (The boat, the Kirk, received 17 helicopter loads of refugees.) "It looked like something out of Exodus," remembers an American soldier in the film. The end came two years after a 1973 peace accord, one celebrated with Bloody Marys at the U.S. embassy. But the agreement between President Richard Nixon and the North Vietnamese Army proved empty. After Nixon was impeached, North Vietnam launched a major attack on the South, and streamed down the coast largely unabated. The U.S., tired from the long, aimless war, no longer put up a fight. President Gerald Ford couldn't even get Congress to approve some $700 million in aid, leaving little support for South Vietnam. RATED: Not rated by the Motion Picture Association of

America. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Longest Week"

In "The Longest Week," Jason Bateman plays a privileged, pampered, narcissistic New Yorker whose sole effort at productivity in life is his meandering work on a novel called "The Directionless Generation." This may be a winking reference to the character himself, who clearly lacks direction, but alas, it's an even more prescient reference to the movie as a whole. There are moments here and there to be enjoyed, mainly for the slick visuals (and wonderfully hip New York apartments), but basically it feels like a directionless enterprise. And though the film is only 86 minutes long, it tends to feel bloated and even a bit tedious by the end — perhaps not an entire generation long, but too long nonetheless. It also feels derivative of other filmmaking styles. Writerdirector Peter Glanz, making his debut feature, is clearly a Woody Allen fan; he uses the same jazzy-type music to accompany his dreamily appealing views of New York City, and he likes psychoanalysis scenes, too. Heck, the first scene has our main character, Conrad, venting to his analyst about his troubles with women, and the analyst is none other than Allen favorite Tony Roberts. Conrad even refers to himself as "Jungian." RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content and smoking." RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them"

"The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them," All the lonely people. Where do they all belong? You won't hear that line in "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them" (more on that title in a moment), a highly absorbing if unwieldy film starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy as a couple struggling to cope — apart and together — with tragedy. In fact, you don't hear any of that famous Beatles song. But it doesn't matter, because you'll probably be hearing it in your head. It's also an apt 12-word summary of the broader life issues the movie addresses. We're all alone, essentially, no matter how close we grow to others. We're born alone, we die alone, and in between, we cope alone. No one can cope for us. Not that "Eleanor," written and directed by Ned Benson in his debut feature, is a total downer of a movie. It can't be, with the luminous Chastain and the appealing McAvoy heading an almost ridiculously high-quality cast. "Eleanor" is about messiness, and risk — in life and in love. But it's not all sad. A word about the format, for those coming in cold: "Eleanor" was originally made as a pair of movies, "Her" and "Him," each a full-length film from the point of view of one character, and made to be seen in either order. Then the Weinstein Company decided to make "Them," a more conventional approach, edited from the other two (which will both be released next month.) Some who saw the first versions at festivals have objected that much has been lost. But the rest of us need to judge "Them" on its own merits. And it's an engrossing film. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language." RUNNING TIME: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Longest Week" a wink at Allen By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press In "The Longest Week," Jason Bateman plays a privileged, pampered, narcissistic New Yorker whose sole effort at productivity in life is his meandering work on a novel called "The Directionless Generation." This may be a winking reference to the character himself, who clearly lacks direction, but alas, it's an even more prescient reference to the movie as a whole. There are moments here and there to be enjoyed, mainly for the slick visuals (and wonderfully hip New York apartments), but basically it feels like a directionless enterprise. And though the film is only 86 minutes long, it tends to feel bloated

and even a bit tedious by the end — perhaps not an entire generation long, but too long nonetheless. It also feels derivative of other filmmaking styles. Writer-director Peter Glanz, making his debut feature, is clearly a Woody Allen fan; he uses the same jazzy-type music to accompany his dreamily appealing views of New York City, and he likes psychoanalysis scenes, too. Heck, the first scene has our main character, Conrad, venting to his analyst about his troubles with women, and the analyst is none other than Allen favorite Tony Roberts. Conrad even refers to himself as "Jungian." Bateman's no stranger to unlikable characters —remember his memorable misanthrope in the recent "Bad Words," who mercilessly stole

spelling-bee trophies from innocent kids? But at least that character had an important justification for his ugly behavior, albeit one we didn't learn 'til the end. Here, Bateman's Conrad doesn't have a redeeming secret. He's just rich and self-centered and duplicitous. Conrad has lived his entire life in the sumptuous Valmont hotel, owned by his parents, but soon after we meet him, he falls on unfortunate circumstances. His parents, who've spent years traveling the world, are getting divorced, and neither wants to foot Conrad's hotel bill anymore. So he's out on the streets. He escapes to the apartment of his well-to-do friend Dylan (Billy Crudup), who's also a rather pretentious elitist but at least has a modicum of moral sense.

Which Conrad does not. He repays Dylan's hospitality by making a move on the lovely Beatrice (Olivia Wilde), a model and literature lover whom Dylan covets. And he lies to both of them about his financial situation, insisting his temporary homelessness has been necessitated by a hotel renovation. Nevertheless, Beatrice falls for Conrad — one could ask why, but Allen's characters always got the girls, too. Beatrice, we're told by the omnipresent narrator, loves the precise way Conrad makes a Tom Collins, or ties a perfect Windsor knot in his necktie. The two share a few blissful days together — kissing by the river, for example, as the Manhattan lights glow (another Allen specialty) before things get really messy.

There's a reason some films are classics By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge It was a bumpy weekend at the movies, but only for the chumps that took a chance on the scant new films. I’m pretty sure that no one had a good time watching The Identical, a riff on the Elvis Presley story that was insulting to both rockers and the faith-based crowd to which it was marketed. And those horror thrill seekers that tried out the two-week old As Above, So Below? They were found wondering why red lighting, demon lore, and claustrophobia done this poorly were supposed to be scary. I wanted to walk out after about ten minutes of the found footage nonsense. Instead, everything that was old was new again. And in

these cases, ‘old’ means ‘classic’. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Ghostbusters was put back into release for the Labor Day holiday weekend. I have fond memories of seeing this movie about a dozen times. Our next door neighbors had a VHS copy of it when we moved in to our house in 1987 and we about wore that thing out. As I look at it now from the perspective of an adult, I don’t know that it was necessarily appropriate for a six-year old, but no one had dreamed up PG-13 to that point. The bawdy humor, the cheesy special effects, and the gaggle of now legendary comedy stars still make the hokey premise of poltergeist disposal fun and believable. Dan Aykroyd looks so

young, especially with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth! The late Harold Ramis did deadpan so much better than anyone else! Sigourney Weaver ’s off-the-shoulder dress looks like it’s made out of a wet Fruit Roll-up! But nothing beats the frantic, boundless timing of star Bill Murray. His range plays from slapstick to maudlin to manic across every scene. I know audiences loved this movie the first time around, but did we ever really appreciate how talented this guy was going to be long-term? Ghostbusters runs 105 minutes and is rated PG for sci-fi action violence including frightening images, suggestive dialogue, brief language, and smoking. I give this film three stars out

of four.

••• Eerily, another favorite also happened to get a one-week IMAX re-release for its 20th anniversary run at the same time. Forrest Gump is far too great a picture to simply bridge the Premium Large Format gap between Guardians of the Galaxy and The Maze Runner, but I’ll take it any way I can get it. 1994’s Best Picture has long been my favorite movie for the sheer fact that it features many great filmmakers doing their career best work at the same time. Tom Hanks was on his way to winning his second straight Best Actor Oscar (and should have gotten a third the next year for Apollo 13. And a fourth for 1998’s Saving Private Ryan) in what would

September 18, 2014

become a critical slam dunk and a box office behemoth. Would the Academy still reward this moving film about the adventures of a simple man from rural Alabama? Few fictional characters saw as much of the 20th Century as did Forrest Gump. In real life probably only Walter Cronkite had as good a seat. The film held off the hardcharging Pulp Fiction, a movie that Harvey Weinstein clearly loves more than I ever will, but hasn’t the year’s other great title, The Shawshank Redemption, fared even better over the last two decades? Chew on that for a minute. Forrest Gump runs 142 minutes and is rated PG-13 for drug content, some sensuality, and war violence. I give this film four stars out of four.

It’s the summer of 1963, and 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is on vacation in New York’s Catskill Mountains with h e r o l d e r s i s t e r a n d p a re n t s . Mesmerized by the racy dance moves and pounding rhythms s h e d i s c o v e r s i n t h e re s o r t ’ s staff quarters, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle, the resort’s sexy dance instructor. Passions ignite and Baby’s life changes forever when

she is thrown in to the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady, both on-stage and off. The Arts One-woman play explores significance of hijab For The Edge Chicago-based playwright and actress Rohina Malik presents her one-woman show ‘Unveiled’ Sept. 27. It can be plain or embroidered, a single hue or richly patterned. It can be black or white or brightly colored. It can be a bold statement or a humble custom. The hijab is many things to many women. In “Unveiled,” Chicago-based playwright Rohina Malik explores the significance of the traditional Muslim headscarf through the lives of five contemporary women who choose to wear it. At 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, Malik will bring her acclaimed one-person show to Washington University in St. Louis as part of the Edison Ovations Series. Born in London to an Indian mother and Pakistani father, Malik immigrated to the United States as a teenager and attended high school in Skokie, Ill. Self-conscious about her multicultural background, Malik initially chose to forego the veil. However, as she grew more immersed in the world of theater, she came to see her Muslim heritage as a source of artistic inspiration. In college, at age 19, she adopted the hijab. That interplay — of tradition, identity and self-determination — deeply informs the five portraits at the heart of “Unveiled.” Inspired as a way of combating negative stereotypes in the wake of 9/11, the play depicts a wide variety of Muslim experiences. Each character represents a different culture and background. What unites them are the veil; the humor and honesty of their stories; and the tea they serve to welcome guests. The evening opens with Maryam, a wry, Pakistan-born housewife who designs wedding dresses for Chicago women in search of a Bollywood look. “All the girls have wanted it since ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ” she

Rohina Malik in "Unveiled." teases a client. For Shabana, a British hip-hop artist, the hijab represents rebellion against her own mother, who worries it will affect marriage prospects, but also a form of empowerment. “Deal with my mind, not my body,” Shabana argues. “This is my feminism.”

Other characters include a MoroccanAmerican lawyer, an African-American Texan who reconnects with the Islam of her childhood, and a Palestinian restaurant owner who confronts a would-be attacker. The Chicago Tribune calls Malik a “hugely talented writer-actress” and “a remarkable

new theatrical voice … In her rich, upbeat and very enjoyable 70-minute collection of five character studies of Muslim women in modern-day America, Malik gives voice to characters from whom we hear far too little in the theater.” Currently a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists and an artistic associate at the 16th Street Theater, Malik was one of four writers in the inaugural group of The Goodman Theater’s Playwrights Unit. “Unveiled,” her professional stage debut, received its world premiere in May 2009 at the 16th Street Theater, directed by Ann Filmer. Subsequent productions include Victory Gardens Theater, Chicago; Next Theater, Evanston, Ill.; Brava Theater, San Francisco; and Crossroads Theater, New Brunswick, N.J. Other plays include “Yasmina’s Necklace” (2010), an exploration of cultural identity, and “The Mecca Tales (2011), a Goodman commission inspired by Chaucer ’s classic “The Canterbury Tales.” Tickets and sponsors “Unveiled” begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Tickets are $36, or $32 seniors, $28 for Washington University faculty and staff and $20 for students and children. Tickets are available at the Edison Box Office and through all MetroTix outlets. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Center, 6465 Forsyth Blvd. For more information, call (314) 935-6543, e-mail edison@wustl.edu or visit edison.wustl. edu/. Performances of “Unveiled” are supported by the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program in Arts & Sciences. The Ovations Series is made possible with support from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency; the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis; and private contributors.

Religion Religion briefs Ebola survivor: I felt like I was going to die

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A U.S. doctor who survived after contracting Ebola while doing missionary work in Liberia says he's "very close" to the doctor most recently diagnosed with the disease and has spent time in "tearful prayer" for him. Dr. Kent Brantly also told NBC News that he feared his own death, telling a nurse at one point he had "no reserve and I don't know how long I can keep this up." NBC News released a portion of its interview with Brantly on Tuesday, the same day officials from the North Carolinabased missionary group SIM said a third U.S. aid worker had contracted the disease. Brantly and missionary, Nancy Writebol, recovered in isolation at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Both were released last month.

American Muslim group denounces latest beheading

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Council on American Islamic Relations is expressing "horror, disgust and sorrow" at the new video purporting to show the beheading of U.S journalist Steven Sotloff by the Islamic State group. CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad says no

one who believes in the Islamic tradition of peace and justice would kill an innocent civilian. In the video distributed Tuesday and titled "A Second Message to America," the militant who performs the beheading says it's retribution for continued U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq. Awad insists there's nothing Islamic about the extremists, despite their claim to be establishing a Muslim caliphate in Syria and Iraq. He says some young Muslims who have joined the Islamic State group have been horrified by what they've seen, but can be killed themselves if they try to leave.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A San Antonio church known for its inclusiveness is set to close this month. When a group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Catholics was banned from a nearby parish, Beacon Hill Presbyterian Church opened its doors. The neighborhood association, artists and recovery groups also used the space. But the San Antonio Express-News reports Beacon Hill will hold its last service after 117 years this weekend. Travel 13th International Route 66 Mother Road Festival and Car Show begins Sept. 26 For The Edge

T

he lure of over 1,000 cool cars, live music, food and fun will bring over 80,000 spectators to scenic Downtown Springfield, IL between Washington and Capitol and 4th and 7th streets on Friday through Sunday, September 26-28, 2014.

The 13th Annual International Route 66 Mother Road Festival and Car Show celebrates the Golden Age of Automobiles, and America’s love of the open road on the legendary Route 66. Vehicles can register at www.Route66Fest. com but admission is free to all spectators. “The Route 66 Festival has become a tradition,” said Kim Rosendahl, President of the Board of Directors for the Festival. “We’ve worked year-round since 2002 to put all the details in motion to make sure that all of our thousands of guests have a great time. We strive to bring variety and fresh attractions every year while maintaining the features that have proven to be so popular year after year. It’s our chance to showcase our beautiful city and its historic sense of place along the iconic Mother Road.” The fun starts on Friday evening, September 26th at 6:15pm with the Route 66 City Nights Cruise for Crime Stoppers. A thousandcar-long parade of classic cars will wind their way from Capital City Shopping Center (3095 S. Dirksen Parkway) to Downtown. Participants are asked (but are not required) to donate $5.00 for each car benefitting Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard Counties. Each cruising car that donates will receive a commemorative 2014 Route 66 city Nights Cruise for Crime Stoppers window decal. Once the cruise reaches downtown expect spectators to line the route by the thousands. For those who register their vehicles, there is joy in just watching the reactions of the crowds who walk by their special, lovingly-prepared machines. Among those scrutinizing their work most closely will be CASICertified National judges who will hand out awards at the end of the weekend for the best in over 40 classes of cars. Horsepower Alley at the Festival will play host to two areas where participants can fire up their rides and put them to the test. The Mickey Thompson Tires Burnout Competition is judged by the reaction of the crowd that will gather to see and hear which contestant can generate the loudest and smokiest burnout in 30 seconds. The Lucas Oil Dyno Challenge allows participants to get a scientific measurement of the amount of at-the-wheels horsepower their ride delivers.

Just a block away will be a huge area called the "Travel Illinois Expo." Inside and around the tented area will be showcases and hosted booths offering visitors information about unique travel opportunities along the Illinois miles of the Mother Road. Coordinated by the Illinois Route 66 National Scenic Byway, the Travel Illinois Expo has been a feature of the Festival since its beginning. Once again, this year’s Travel Illinois Expo will feature a commemorative exhibit honoring the late Bob Waldmire. Waldmire, a Route 66 Hall of Fame Inductee, was an international and national icon of US Route 66, traveling the road numerous times over his lifetime, becoming the unofficial Route 66 Ambassador while making friends and creating art along the way. Bob reached the end of "his road" in 2009. As a special feature of the Festival, Bob's brother, Buz Waldmire, will bring a commemorative exhibit to the Festival as well as having posters, post cards, note cards and more displaying Bob's artwork will also be for sale. Travel Illinois Expo will also host another exhibit that Festival-goers can “ink” to become a part of Route 66 history. Every year, the IL Route 66 National Scenic Byway creates a car hood with the Route 66 emblem that attendees can sign. The hood is always a huge draw, garnering

thousands of signatures from Festival-goers. This year, another hood will be on display waiting for signatures near the Travel Illinois Expo all weekend long. By signing the hood, people can become part of Illinois Route 66 and a part of history. The rhythm of the Festival comes from the live music stages. On Friday night, headlining the Hot Rod Stage at 6th St. and Washington will be St. Louis-based “Sh-Boom” from 7:30pm-10:00pm. On Saturday, there will be great rockin’ sounds outside Recycled Records at 625 E. Adams St. featuring the “Johnny Concheroo Band” from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. On the main Hot Rod Stage on Saturday will be sounds from “Hipbone Sam” from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, and “The Blue Suede Crew” from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Participants may register in advance at www.Route66Fest. com or by calling 1-866-RTE-66IL (1-866-783-6645) through Friday, September 19th for $40 plus a $3.50 handling fee. Registration will continue on-site beginning on Thursday, September 25th for $55. All makes and models are accepted, and a free t-shirt goes to each entrant. For a full schedule of events, visit www.Route66Fest.com, www. facebook.com/Route66Fest or call 1-866-RTE-66IL (1-866-783-6645).

Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”– the title track of his 1986 debut album–

became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Béla Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny and Robbie Robertson. Hornsby’s performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain. Patron tickets are on sale now at $150 and include preferred seating, free parking and a tax deduction. For patron tickets and more information, call The Sheldon’s Development Department 314533-9900.
