Under the Sea Jean-Michel Cousteau to speak at McKendree University By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The first name in ocean exploration would have to be the late Jacques Cousteau. He was certainly a pioneer in showing the world what was under the mysterious waters. His curiosity of the vast oceans lead him to educate people of all ages on ocean life and the necessity to preserve and protect it. His son has certainly followed in his foot steps. French explorer, environmentalist and documentary film producer Jean-Michel Cousteau has now communicated his love and concern for the world’s oceans for over four decades. He will speak at McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The program, a presentation o f t h e G e o rg e E . M c C a m m o n Memorial Distinguished Speaker Series, is open to the public. A d m i s s i o n i s f re e b u t s e a t i n g i s l i m i t e d s o re s e r v a t i o n s a re recommended; call 537-6863 or visit the Hett box office. Wearing newly invented scuba gear at the age of 7, Cousteau was first “thrown overboard” the Calypso by his famous father. In 1999, Jean-Michel founded the Ocean Futures Society, a nonprofit marine conservation and education organization to carry on his father ’s pioneering work and to honor his heritage. As its spokesman, he stresses the critical bond between people and the sea and the importance o f w i s e e n v i ro n m e n t a l p o l i c y. Cousteau and his Ocean Futures Society team continue to follow closely the impact of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, its longterm effect on wildlife and what innovations are ahead to rebuild the Gulf. Cousteau and his team know t h a t i t w i ll take years, maybe even decades, before we know the full impact of the “Deepwater Horizon” oil spill. With the beginning of the first wintering migration about to begin, the team expects to get a small sense of just how farreaching the oil spill effects will

People planner Mindstorm takes unique look at schizophrenia Nine mental health organizations in the St. Louis area have partnered together to present a free educational event to educate the general public on severe mental illnesses, beginning with schizophrenia, and hopefully improve the stigma felt by those receiving treatment. Mindstorm – Experience the Virtual Reality of Schizophrenia will be held on Thursday, October 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the OMNIMAX Theater at the Saint Louis Science Center. The powerful seven-minute, first –person experience simulates the symptoms of schizophrenia such as hearing voices and visual hallucinations. The video presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with a panel of individuals living with schizophrenia and mental health experts, moderated by Al Wiman, vice president of Public Understanding for the Saint Louis Science Center. Approximately 70 percent of people with schizophrenia

experience auditory hallucinations, or hearing voices, and 25 percent experience visual illusions or distortions. Using input from individuals with the disease and a panel of expert psychiatrists, Mindstorm was developed by Janssen, Division of Ortho-McNeilJanssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as a tool to create understanding and empathy toward schizophrenia by simulating realistic sensory hallucinations. Jason & the Scorchers Nashville legends to perform at The Old Rock House By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge If you are in a bar band looking to get your music heard, there is a venue in St. Louis that has become the place to be seen and heard. The Old Rock House, located at 1200 South Seventh St. in downtown St. Louis. The venue is a threestory music lovers hot spot. With free parking in their lot and on the street, food and drink specials, and a music calendar that rivals no other, The Old Rock House is a band’s best friend. Legendary Nashville rock band Jason & The Scorchers, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Music Conference in 2008, will make their way to The Old Rock House on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and are $18 in advance, $20 the day of the show. Must be 21 or over to attend. Jason & The Scorchers spent 2009 working on their latest project, “Halcyon Times,” which was released in Feb. 2010. Their bio and latest reviews are giving a whole renewed outlook on the band and their newest accomplishment, “Halcyon Times.” With its release, Jason & The Scorchers have accomplished an extremely rare feat – deep into their career, they have made a rock ‘n’ roll record every bit as dynamic and mind-blowing as their vintage work. Very few rock bands can make this claim. Jason & The Scorchers can, they should, and they do. Indeed, ‘Halcyon Times’ is a true career record.” In addition to founding members Jason Ringenberg and Warner E. Hodges, “Halcyon Times” marks the band’s first recording with its muscular new rhythm section of bassist Al Collins (Stacie Collins) and young Swedish drummer Pontus Snibb (Bonafide, Snibb). In addition, the album was coproduced by Brad Jones (Chuck Prophet, Over the Rhine, Tim Easton, Hayes Carll, Justin Townes Earle) and features special guest contributions from Dan Baird of

September 23, 2010

Homemade Sin, Ginger from The Wildhearts, and Tommy Womack. “Halcyon Times” also contains a 24-page booklet with extensive photos, lyrics, and liner notes from each member of the band as well as the guest players on the record. “Halcyon Times” is no “return to their roots.” It is instead a creative leap forward, showing the band at its peak, not on some sort of self-absorbed nostalgia trip. “Moonshine Guy” opens the record, full of bravado and bravery, driven by a character who “yells and he roars / likes The Stones, hates the Doors.” While “Mona Lee” is certainly as exciting as anything the band has ever recorded, it’s hard to pick a standout track on the record they are all that strong. Hodges’ guitar work is better than ever, full of style and inspired originality, while Ringenberg rocks like he is still 18, leaping off the edge of the world, laughing while doing it. Snibb and Collins supply that elusive, magic rock ‘n’ roll groove, full of energy but grounded in confident and unhurried power. However, like all classic rock records, “Halcyon Times” has more than enough moments of sublime grace to balance out the hormones. Listen to the 12-string guitar on “Land of the Free.” It’s like stepping into a Steinbeck novel. Or put on headphones and let “Mother of Greed” take you down a road that winds from

northern Wales in 1910 to Birmingham, Ala., in 2009, the protagonists careening from one set of “arms of need” into another. It’s that kind of song, literary without being pretentious. In terms of production, it’s hard to imagine a better team than Warner Hodges and Brad Jones. They succeeded in making a JATS record that captures the live energy of the band, with enough added ear candy to keep you coming back repeatedly. This release almost demands multiple listening experiences; there is so much to take in. Fourteen songs deep, covering a staggering range of emotions and style, “Halcyon Times” shows Jason & The Scorchers are still expanding that creative envelope, still in command of their legacy. You can bet your life that in concert they will deliver with equal majesty. Make sure to order tickets now for Jason & the Scorchers St. Louis show at The Old Rock House on Saturday, Oct. 16. To find out more information about where to purchase tickets or about the venue, visit www.oldrockhouse. com. For more information on the band or their music, visit www. jasonandthescorchers.com

Music Tuning in Lissie to perform at Redstone Room Lissie is gradually becoming the Quad-Cities claim to fame with praise from Rolling Stone, Paste, Nylon, Filter, Marie Claire, and even Perez Hilton. Lissie will be performing at the River Music Experience in the Redstone Room on Saturday, October 16. Lissie was born in Rock Island, Illinois. She’s a straight-talking Midwestern girl, all flaxen hair and big blue eyes, and this girl is smart and gutsy and tough, with a big old voice to match it: Laurel Canyon prettiness stewed in campfire and bourbon. Why You Runnin’ - the Fat Possum released & Bill Reynolds (Band Of Horses) produced - EP released in the US late last year, earned the young singer high praise. The EP caught the attention of new fans and the U.S. press, with praise rolling in from Paste, Nylon, Filter, and Marie Claire, among others. She toured with Ray LaMontagne, A.A. Bondy, City & Colour, and The Low Anthem and eventually tackled a whirlwind SXSW schedule (10 shows, 4 days) with ease and won over tough critics like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and even Perez Hilton. She headed to Nashville to record with Jacquire King (who was fresh from working with the Kings of Leon), and also recorded some more with Reynolds. What came out of these sessions is the bulk of her debut album, Catching A Tiger: 12 songs that range from bluesy-folk to unfettered pop, and showcase both her remarkable voice and her songwriting chops. Since early this year, Lissie has

largely been based in London, where Catching A Tiger was first released. Embraced lovingly by the British press, she’s been featured in Q, The Sun, The Sunday Times, The Mirror, Time Out, The Big Issue, and on the BBC and Later…with Jools Holland, among others; she’s played with Joshua Radin, The Local Natives, and Alan Pownall, in addition to performing at Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, and The Great Escape in Brighton, England. She’s also picked up praise and support from a wide range of fellow artists, including Katy Perry, Courtney Love, Mumford & Sons, and Ellie Goulding, who joined her onstage to perform “Everywhere I Go” at The Great Escape in May. Lissie will perform in the Redstone Room on October 16 at 8:30PM. Tickets to see this show are on sale now at www.redstoneroom. com or by visiting the River Music Experience box office or either Quad City Co-Op location.

Chamber Chorus opens new season The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus opens its 55th season, themed “Progressions - Transitions,” with a musical journey “From Hungary to Hollywood.” The tradition of choral music in Hungary is second to none, with its roots planted firmly in both the free spirit of folk music and the more formal environment of the AustroHungarian Empire. The program travels from the Romanticism of Franz Liszt, through Zoltán Kodály’s celebration of Nationalism, to the ‘diaspora’ to

America exemplified by Miklós Rózsa. From developing a curriculum for music instruction, to collecting and arranging folk melodies and composing sacred music, no one exerted a greater influence on the musical life of Hungary than Kodály. The Chamber Chorus will perform his signature piece, “Jesus and The Traders,” as well as his “Ode to Franz Liszt,” along with works by Liszt himself. Anchoring the program will be “Missa Brevis,” a poignant epitaph to Kodály’s most illustrious

student, Mátyás Seiber, who was developing into a fine composer before he was tragically killed in a traffic accident in 1960. Seiber’s daughter, Julia Seiber Boyd, will travel from her home in the UK for this performance. The Chorus will complete its travels with the music of Miklós Rózsa. Rózsa’s career ranged from the concert hall to the silver screen, having won three Oscars and numerous nominations for his scores for movies such as “Spellbound” and “Quo Vadis.” From his works for concert choir,

the concert will feature his setting of Psalm 23, a difficult piece performed rarely and recorded but once, on LP. This Chamber Chorus performance will offer the audience a rare chance to enjoy the marriage of Hungarian and American musical influences. Join the Saint Louis Chamber C h o r u s o n a j o u r n e y “ F ro m Hungary to Hollywood,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 3 at St. Mary of Victories Catholic Church. Tickets are $27, $10 for students. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“Eat Pray Love”

This does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. Yet it also offers sufficient emotional heft and self-discovery that it’ll make people feel as if they’ve actually learned something and, perhaps, emerged as better people solely through osmosis. It’s easy to see why Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir became an international phenomenon, even without help from Oprah. Everyone’s looking for something — for answers, for their true and higher purpose — and Gilbert had the fortitude (and the wherewithal) to take off alone on a journey around the world to find herself after her divorce. Having Julia Roberts star as Liz Gilbert in the film version of the best-seller, in theory, only makes it more appealing to an even wider audience. Roberts is radiant as ever, and director and co-writer Ryan Murphy’s adaptation allows her to show off her full range with plenty of hardcore hanky moments. It’s overlong and it wraps up with the kind of romantic comedy cliches that, for the most part, were absent from the first two-thirds. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, though, it’ll make you want to head out for wine and pasta with your girlfriends afterward. Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco star as the various loves of her life. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity. RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Lottery Ticket”

The odds of winning the lottery are what, like, 1 in 175 million? The laughs aren’t quite so hard to come by here, but they’re not a safe bet, either. The feature debut from longtime music video director Erik White, which he co-wrote with Abdul Williams, starts out amiably enough, with a shaggy, shambling vibe. But it eventually devolves into a weirdly violent streak, followed by some seriously heavy-handed sentimentality. Still, the ensemble cast manages to keep things sporadically enjoyable. Rapper-actor Bow Wow is all grown up here as Kevin, a recent high school graduate who’s stuck working at Foot Locker but dreams of creating his own shoe line. “Lottery Ticket” is at its strongest off the top, as Kevin tries to make his way to work at the mall one morning but keeps getting delayed by the random neighbors in his Atlanta housing project. Brandon T. Jackson has a loose, easy energy about him and gets many of the best lines. But when Kevin plays the lottery and wins the $370 million jackpot, everything

September 23, 2010

changes, with people cozying up to him or trying to kill him because he’s now a rich man. And because he wins over the extended July 4 weekend, he must wait three days to cash in. Loretta Devine, Naturi Naughton and Ice Cube co-star. RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, language including a drug reference, some violence and brief underage drinking. RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“Flipped”

Rob Reiner’s latest has been billed as a return to form for the director and a companion piece to his “Stand By Me.” Like that film, “Flipped” is a coming-of-age ode to youth cloaked in mid-century Americana (the early 1960s). It’s nostalgic for nostalgia. There’s charm here and some honest observations of adolescence. But there’s also a willful, cloying datedness to the movie — overly stuffed with period detail like an “Archie” comic strip. It tracks a boy (Callan McAuliffe) and a girl (Madeline Carroll) from 7-years-old to 13, and all the fluctuating emotions in between. The strength of “Flipped” is in its trueness to humdrum adolescence. It’s filled not with extravagant dramas, but instead portrays how seemingly minor happenings take on grand meaning: the tragic tearing down of the cherished sycamore, the terrifying formality of a sit-down dinner, the frightening awkwardness of nearly everything. But it lacks both the darkness and comedy of “Stand By Me” and its device of flipping every scene to show both kids’ perspective drags the film. With Aidan Quinn and Anthony Edwards as the fathers, and John Mahoney as a grandfather. RATED: PG for language and some thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Last Exorcism”

One of the scariest movies to come along in a long time — until the last five minutes or so, when it completely falls apart. Director Daniel Stamm’s faux documentary starts out with deadpan delivery and a dry sense of humor, then it turns riveting, then truly frightening, then just plain silly. It’s like it morphs from being a Christopher Guest movie to “The Blair Witch Project.” Until then, the filmmakers keep you guessing as to what’s real and what’s imagined, what’s a disturbing mental disorder and what’s actually demonic possession. And the fact that this Eli Roth production uses all unknown actors helps us get sucked into this eerie world. Evangelical Louisiana

preacher Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) has been performing exorcisms for the past 25 years but he knows they’re all a sham. He long ago lost his faith, and for a while has had no qualms about taking money from true believers in the name of supporting his own family. Now, with his conscience weighing on him, he lets a camera crew come behind the scenes to expose his tricks as he “performs” one last exorcism. Fabian finds the balance in his character’s conflicting motivations, and Ashley Bell is extraordinary as the teenager who’s been acting strangely. RATED: PG-13 for disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material. RUNNING TIME: 88 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“I’m Still Here”

Joaquin Phoenix may truly have walked away from a much-heralded acting career two years ago to pursue his artistic expression as a rapper. His look, which went from dark and mysterious to shaggy and doughy, may simply have been part of his transformative process. Or not. It becomes increasingly difficult to care about discerning what’s real and what’s a hoax as this documentary drones on. We have to use the word “documentary” loosely, however, because it suggests an attempt at capturing fact on film. What “I’m Still Here” captures is questionable. Casey Affleck, an esteemed actor in his own right who is directing for the first time, gets such intimate access to Phoenix, it’s often uncomfortable to watch. Affleck’s camera stalks Phoenix as he walks and talks and rants and smokes (four things he does for the entirety of the film), and tries to explain the conundrum of reconciling art and celebrity. At times, “I’m Still Here” suggests it’s trying to achieve an understanding of the fragility of fame. Mostly, though, it feels like an elaborate put-on, with celebrities such as Ben Stiller and Sean Combs in on the joke. Ultimately, Phoenix turns more sullen, demanding, abusive and paranoid. If we’re truly witnessing the unraveling of a talented man in his prime, it’s just sad. If it’s all performance art, though, it’s just pointless. RATED: Not rated but contains copious amounts of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll — some of which may actually have been real — and much profanity and full-frontal nudity. RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKINIG: Two stars out of four.

Movies “I’m Still Here” just drones on By JAKE COYLE Associated Press Joaquin Phoenix may truly have walked away from a much-heralded acting career two years ago to pursue his artistic expression as a rapper. His look, which went from dark and mysterious to shaggy and doughy, may simply have been part of his transformative process. Or not. It becomes increasingly difficult to care about discerning what’s real and what’s a hoax as the documentary “I’m Still Here” drones on. We have to use the word “documentary” loosely, however, because it suggests an attempt at capturing fact on film. What “I’m Still Here” captures is questionable. Casey Affleck, an esteemed actor in his own right who is directing for the first time, gets such intimate access to Phoenix, it’s often uncomfortable to watch, especially when Phoenix is bent over a toilet yacking or having a particularly vile prank played on him while he’s asleep. That’s unsurprising, given that Affleck is married to Phoenix’s sister, Summer, and the two costarred in Gus Van Sant’s “To Die For” 15 years ago. And similar to Van Sant’s recent films, “I’m Still Here” often has a natural aesthetic and a languid, meandering vibe that makes you wonder what’s going to happen next — that is, if you’re still awake. Affleck’s camera stalks Phoenix as he walks and talks and rants and smokes (four things he does for the entirety of the film), and tries to explain the conundrum of reconciling art and celebrity. If he watches his own performances,

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by Magnolia Pictures, Joaquin Phoenix is shown in the film, “I’m Still Here.” does he become too conscious of them, and does that affect future performances? If he reads articles about himself that describe him as emotional and intense, is he really that way, or does he become that way because it’s the image that’s being projected onto him? Intriguing existential questions, all. And at times, “I’m Still Here” does give the impression that it’s trying to achieve an understanding of the fragility of fame. Mostly,

though, it feels like an elaborate put-on, with celebrities such as Ben Stiller and Sean Combs in on the joke. The fact that Affleck often has multiple cameras going at once is a hint. So are the closing credits, in which Affleck and Phoenix are listed as co-writers. If there is an actual structure here, though, it’s often elusive. Phoenix complains a lot about being misunderstood, gives passionate bear hugs to fellow actors Sean

Penn, Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson and Danny Glover at a play rehearsal, and makes a halfhearted attempt at attending President Obama’s inauguration. He also snorts what looks like cocaine off the naked breasts of a woman who is supposedly a prostitute, smokes joint after joint and cavorts with the various sycophants who are constantly around and frequently nude. He also raps — badly. His rhymes

are monotone, his beats are tinny and his lyrics are inane. He agonizes in his home studio and performs awkwardly on stage in front packed, bewildered crowds in Las Vegas and Miami. When he finally gets Combs to sit down and listen to his demo, Combs is polite but direct: Phoenix is not good enough to do this. The producer’s reaction crushes Phoenix. But is it a genuine reaction? Phoenix does seem crestfallen, and

You’ll fall in love with “Flipped” By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge “Resident Evil: Afterlife” proves that no matter how many beautiful people you cram into a movie, you can’t make a pig pretty. I mean no disrespect to Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Sienna G u i l l o r y, o r, y e s , We n t w o r t h Miller by this statement. It’s purely a matter of fact. Instead, I honed my interests in the new Rob Reiner film that I’ve been waiting to see for what seems like months. It’s called “Flipped” and it’s based off of a novel by w e l l - k n o w n c h i l d re n ’ s a u t h o r Wendelin Van Draanen, writer of the Sammy Keyes series. This standalone tale is a delight, but a definite throwback to another time. “Flipped” is a junior high school romance, something that

September 23, 2010

many would argue is silly and impractical, but handled here with the tenderness that such a fleeting concept deserves. It wasn’t always a love-filled relationship for Bryce Loski ( C a l l a n M c A u l i ff e , a s p i t t i n g image of actor Ryan Reynolds) and Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll, an established actress best known for playing Kevin Costner ’s daughter in Swing Vote), at least on his part. When the two met as seven year-olds in 1959, he couldn’t believe the tenacity of this ragamuffin girl. She was curious, kooky, and absolutely undeterred by having to take ‘no’ for an answer. As the new boy in town, Bryce was devastated to find that this girl was the first new schoolmate to welcome him to town and befriend him. This wins no points with seven year-

old boys, a macho crowd to be sure. Bryce’s especially macho best friend, Garrett, is a chief offender here. He might not understand why Juli won’t leave Bryce alone, but just can’t stop himself from making fun of his confused buddy for it. Juli is smitten at first by Bryce’s shimmering eyes and soon finds herself unable to stop sniffing his hair, which smells like summer watermelon, and following him around, despite the hurtful ways that boys will be boys. She’s strong-willed, this girl. But by the time she becomes a young woman, as she and Bryce enter the eighth grade, her self-awareness starts to creep in, making her intelligence, determination, compassion, a n d c u r i o s i t y s e e m m o re l i k e liabilities than the assets they

are for such a rare and delightful character. I like old-fashioned things and I hope that in 1963 I would have liked to have known Juli Baker, even with her bizarre propensity for climbing sycamore trees. The short running time of this picture, a mere ninety minutes, is compounded by the fact that it really only takes half of that time to tell the story. Each scene is alternately shown from both points of view of the central characters. It gives perspective how the events of our lives can truly be i m p a c t f u l o n t h o s e w e k n o w, those we care about, and those we love. Being of a different generation, some notable parts of Flipped’s setting show how far America has come as a society. Music d o e s n ’ t r i n g a n y m o re l i k e i t does in this movie, using doo-

wop and easy-going pop to keep the tone light. Boys and girls wear ties or dresses to school, instead of their pajamas (or worse). Bryce’s dad’s (Anthony Edwards) language isn’t exactly PC. He drinks, criticizes, keeps his wife in the kitchen, and, unlike most of us, doesn’t blanche at t h e w o rd ‘ re t a rd ’ w h e n u s e d to describe Juli’s dad’s (Aidan Quinn) mentally-handicapped b r o t h e r ( K e v i n We i s m a n ) , a c h a r a c t e r v i s i t e d i n a g ro s s l y antiquated sanitarium. John Mahoney, Rebecca De Mornay, and Penelope Ann Miller co-star. Flipped is a nice movie. Maybe even kind of dorky. I loved it, though, and you should too. ••• Flipped runs 90 minutes and is rated PG for language and some thematic material. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Movies Directors hook viewers with "Catfish" By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press The problem with writing about “Catfish” is that you have to write about “Catfish” — and potentially divulge the many twists the documentary has in store. Still, you’ve got to say something. So this is probably going to be a short review. Know this much, at least: You should see the film, and you should force yourself to learn as little about it as possible beforehand. Directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost didn’t know what they were in for, either. They started out making one kind of movie and in no time found themselves lensdeep in something completely different. Producer Andrew Jarecki, who directed the Oscar-nominated

2003 documentary “Capturing the Friedmans,” found himself in a similarly unpredictable situation; the results here are similarly breathtaking. That they and their subject, Ariel’s brother Yaniv Schulman, followed this path wherever it would lead — and let us go along for the ride — is what’s so exciting about this genre. These guys just picked up their hand-

has some revelations as it moves from comedy to romance to places beyond that we shouldn’t mention.

The Arts

Art meets history Grace Manor to host exhibit opening, show By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Grace Manor has teamed up with Art Park Ost and has been hosting beautiful art work along with the amazing cuisine that they serve. The historic walls of Grace Manor serve as the back drop for local artists to showcase their artwork and diners have the privilege to soak it all in while enjoying a gourmet feast. The next upcoming exhibit is entitled “Equinox” and will be opening on Saturday, Oct. 2. The public is invited to the “Equinox” opening celebration at Grace Manor, located at 1801 North Main St., in Edwardsville (the former Klingel House location). Art Park Ost and Grace Manor Seasonal Restaurant will proudly present the work of Jeremy Rabus, Ash Forrest, Aaron Happe, and Rebecca Grant in this new exhibit. This is a collection of artists working in both abstract and representational methods to investigate the formal element of color. Both Ash Forrest and Jeremy Rabus are recent graduates of SIUE who exhibit locally in the St. Louis area. Rebecca Grant and Aaron Happe are current students at SIUE, with both working in a number of media including their

present display of work in drawing and painting. “Equinox” strives to represent the focus of the element of color in the seasonal changes taking place at Grace Manor Seasonal Restaurant reflecting fall. Ash Forrest received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2009. She works in various mediums, including letterpress, painting, audio, photography, video, textiles and sculpture. Ash has exhibited both locally and internationally, and her most recent solo exhibit was “Suburban Decay” in St. Louis, December 2009. She currently resides in St. Louis. Jeremy Rabus is an artist living in Wood River with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from SIUEs. His paintings are improvised, unplanned records of pictorial instinct, begun with little notion of a final image. Globes, capsules, tendrils, and arabesques of color are layered one upon another. Between sessions of applying paint, he works a power sander into areas of the piece, obliterating bits of over-painting and removing most brushstroke textures. This infuses the image into, rather than applying it onto, the surface, and excavates traces of the painting’s history, which

are integrated onto the final piece. Currently, Jeremy is represented by Hoffman LaChance Contemporary in St. Louis, and his work belongs to many private collections. Jeremy is also an active member of both and St. Louis Artists Guild and Art Dimensions of St. Louis where he shows and paints live. Rebecca Grant is currently an undergraduate student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics in December of 2010. She utilizes a wide range of skills from a variety of artistic disciplines including drawing, painting, fiber arts, metal working and sculptural techniques. Numerous pieces of her functional pottery now reside in private collections. Her current work consists mainly of figurative

The Arts Artistic adventures Rulan Tangen and Dancing Earth launch Edison Ovations series In the beginning, people came from the sky, descending to the earth that would thereafter sustain them. It’s a theme found in the “constellation” creation myths of the Iroquoian, Mayan, Algonquin and other First Nation peoples. It is also a theme reinforced by modern science. Carbon, the basic element for all life on earth, is only formed in the heart of a star. In October, the Edison at Washington University will launch its 2010-11 Ovations Series with Of Bodies of Elements, a new evening-length concert by Dancing Earth, the premier indigenous contemporary dance ensemble working today. Led by choreographer Rulan Tangen, this acclaimed troupe is poised at the intersection of ritual, culture and ecology, employing Native American traditions and perspectives to explore contemporary — particularly environmental — issues and concerns. Performances, which are co-sponsored by the Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies at WUSTL’s George Warren Brown School of Social Work, will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1 and 2. Tickets are $35; $30 seniors; $25 for Washington University faculty and staff; and $20 for students and children.

In addition, at 11 a.m. Saturday, the company will present a special all-ages matinee, titled Elements of Dancing Earth, as part of the ovations for young people series. Tickets are $12. Tickets are available at the Edison Box Office and through all MetroTix outlets. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt C e n t e r, 6 4 4 5 F o r s y t h B l v d . F o r m o re information, call (314) 935-6543 or e-mail edison@wustl.edu. Of Bodies of Elements opens with a suite of dances illustrating constellation creation myths as well as the native belief that all life forms are in some way related. Elegantly summarized by the Lakota prayer “Mitakuye Oyasin” — an expression of harmony with nature that literally translates as “all of my relations” — this belief also finds a corollary in modern science, which has shown that many strands of DNA are shared by both humans and animals. The program continues with dances exploring native agriculture and diet, the staples of which were corn, beans and squash, also known as the “Three Sisters.” In some regions a “Fourth Sister,” the sunflower, was planted to protect corn from being eaten by birds. In recent years, the sunflower has taken on additional resonance as the symbol of the anti-nuclear movement: its roots have a unique ability to leech heavy metals and radiation from soil and water. Subsequent dances explore the European

colonization of “Turtle Island,” a native term for the North American continent, as well as the early reservation period and the legacy of forced assimilation. Symbolizing renewal are the whirling “ T h u n d e r s t o m p , ” w h i c h c a p t u re s t h e spirited energies of fire, water, wind and lightening; and the concluding “Resurging Wilderness,” which speaks to the constant change and evolution of life throughout the earth’s many ages. Tangen made her professional debut at age 17 and has since performed with ballet and modern companies in New York, Santa Fe and California. A champion powwow dancer, she has created lead roles for a number of native dance projects, including Kaha:Wi Dance Theatre in Toronto, TRIBE at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul, MN; Minigoowezewin at the Banff Centre, Canada; No Home But The Heart with the DAYSTAR Company; Here On Earth for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian; and the PBS-televised Music From a Painted Cave. Dancing Earth, which Tangen founded in 2004, reflects both the cultural heritage and the contemporary identity of native peoples. The company boasts an entirely indigenous creative team of nine dancers and more than a dozen composers, costumers, filmmakers, visual artists and stage crew. Between them, members represent the First Nations of Blackfoot, Hawaiian,

Tarasco, Pueblo, Pima/Maricopa, Seneca/ Cayuga Seminole/Pawnee, Yaqui, Apache, Juaneno, Coushatta, Chamorro, Metis, Cherokee, Choctaw, Shoshone, Aotearoa, Dene, Papanga, Shoshone, Tarahuamara, Lummi, Jenizaro, Naragansett, Pima and Taino. Every aspect of production — from sets and lighting to costumes and body paint — is shaped by a commitment to environmental sustainability. For Of Bodies of Elements, set designer Lawrence Santiago included recycled materials such as industrial cardboard and red willow branches, along with solar-powered lighting. Since its formation, Dancing Earth has performed at international festivals, cultural centers, museums, educational institutions and reservation youth conferences across North and South America. In 2007, the company was named “One of the Top 25 To Watch” by Dance Magazine. More recently, Dancing Earth made history as the first Indigenous contemporary dance ensemble to be awarded a prestigious National Dance Project grant. Earlier this year, the troupe received an award for Expressive Arts from the National Museum of the American Indian. Travel briefs Virginia colonial sites seek world heritage designation WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — Colonial Williamsburg is seeking the designation of the Historic Triangle as a World Heritage Site. The historic area says it is partnering with Preservation Virginia and working with the National Park Service to seek the designation. The Historic Triangle is comprised of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. Colonial Williamsburg says there are 20 sites in the U.S. on the World Heritage Committee list, but none that relate specifically to the establishment of English society in America. The move comes as Colonial Williamsburg and Preservation Virginia are partnering to enhance visitor experience through compelling stories of discovery, diversity and democracy. It also will work to give visitors a glimpse at archaeological discoveries found in the area.

Museum brings its art outdoors around Detroit area DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Institute of Arts is putting up ornately framed reproductions of some of its most significant paintings on the streets of southeast Michigan as part of a celebration of its 125th anniversary. The life-sized digital copies look as if they’ve been pulled from the museum’s walls and will be on display through November. “We hope people will be surprised and pleased when they see them,” museum Director Graham W.J. Beal said in a

statement. Some of the reproductions for “DIA: Inside/Out” are on walls outside shops and restaurants, while others are on freestanding posts at parks or other outdoor locations. Each is accompanied by an information plaque like one that would be seen at the museum. All but two of the 40 reproductions are of paintings. One is of a tapestry and one is from a ceramic tile piece. A number already are on display, including the Georges Seurat’s “View of Le Crotoy from Upstream” along the Detroit RiverWalk near the Rivard Plaza carousel, and Henry Fuseli’s “The Nightmare” outside Noir Leather in downtown Royal Oak. In Grosse Pointe, Jean Marc Nattier ’s “The Marquise de Vintimille as Aurora” is on the wall outside a Borders bookstore. Frederic Edwin Church’s “Syria by the Sea” — which shows an expanse of old ruins — is to be put on display next week outside one of Detroit’s most recognizable ruins: The 17-story Michigan Central Depot. Vincent van Gogh’s “Portrait of Postman Roulin” is expected to go up at The Wilson Barn, a historic site in Livonia. And Edgar Degas’ “Dancers in the Green Room” is to greet visitors to Mercer Beach in Walled Lake. An interactive map of the locations in Wayne, Macomb, Oakland and Washtenaw counties will be posted on the museum’s website in mid-September, when the installation is complete. The waterproof vinyl copies are produced by SM/ART Editions. The company, which specializes in making such reproductions for home and office decor, plans to sell copies of the “DIA: Inside/Out” works on its website.

2010 summer good for tourism on SC’s Grand Strand MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Officials along the Grand Strand say business this summer has been solid after a couple of tough years at South Carolina’s most popular vacation destination. Tourism researchers at Coastal Carolina University found hotel occupancy is up 8 percent this summer and attractions like Broadway at the Beach reported a steady increase in customers, according to a story Monday by The Sun News of Myrtle Beach. The increase in tourists should lead to higher hotel rates and jump start other parts of the economy around Myrtle Beach. Construction on new hotels could begin again in a couple of years, said Taylor Damonte, director of the Clay Brittain Jr. Center for Resort Tourism at Coastal Carolina University. “The big picture is that we are now in the beginning stages of the new business cycle,” Damonte told the newspaper. Credit for the increase in tourists goes to several different factors, said Brad Dean, president and chief executive of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. The airport added direct flights to Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Chicago, while tourism officials increased advertising, including trying to lure visitors leery of going to the Gulf of Mexico because of the oil spill. The ads emphasized Myrtle Beach as an affordable destination for people on a tight budget, Dean said. “The last 18 months have been some of the most challenging times for our local industry,” Dean told the newspaper.

Udder-ly satisfying Dr. Hess’ products continue to sooth skin By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

I

n the world of skin care products, there are literally thousands to choose from. In 2009 alone, the skin care industry included about 800 companies with combined annual revenue of $50 billion. Anyone with a skin care product idea is out there attempting to get a piece of the $50 billion pie.

With so many products to choose from, it becomes very intimidating to go to your local drug or department store and make a decision about those products. So many claim to do something fantastic for your skin, whether it be to make the consumer look younger, make your skin glow, make it more elastic (whatever that means) or a million other claims that rarely ever happen. Once a skin care product is found that actually meets the standards that a consumer is looking for, many times the manufacture quits making it or the store quits carrying it. Few stand the test of time.

September 23, 2010

Dr. Gilbert Hess, in 1893, created a product that has withstood the test of time and is still a favorite of both men and women alike. Dr. Gilbert Hess, who had degrees as a medical doctor and as a veterinarian, and J.L. Clark, a businessman from Ashland, Ohio, teamed up to manufacture Dr. Hess’ invention, Dr. Hess Udder Ointment. The duo created Hess & Clark farm remedies, which became an almost instant success. By 1897, the company had begun building what was to become one of the largest factories in Ohio and by 1915 employed 260 workers and 30 full-time salesmen. The two men became wealthy and used this wealth to benefit their community; building a hospital, starting a student endowment, supporting the County Children’s Home, the American Red Cross and several other local charities. After the deaths of Dr. Hess in 1923 and Mr. Clark in 1942, the company of Hess & Clark continued but was finally purchased by Vick Chemical in 1955. Over the years, several subsequent buyouts have occurred. Although the company itself has evolved and changed hands, the original product, Dr. Hess Udder Ointment has not. Originally developed

for treating chapped teats and udders of dairy cattle, farmers and other users quickly found that it had amazing effects on their hands. Since that time, Udder Ointment has been widely used as both a veterinary remedy and a home remedy as well. Currently, Polly and Tyler Tribe, greatgrandchildren of J.L. Clark, are now owners of Dr. Hess Products, LLC, and are continuing in the tradition of their ancestors. They not only offer the famous Dr. Hess Udder Ointment, but have added some other products to their line. Dr. Hess also makes Dr. Hess Udder Ointment for Baby Butts, which has been shown to be great for diaper rash and chaffing. Dr. Hess Udder Stick, which now has four flavors, is a great solution for the driest and most chapped lips. Flavors include Original Vanilla, Mango, Pomegranate and Vanilla Mint. Dr. Hess products contain almost all natural skin healing ingredients including lanolin, beeswax, olive oil, vitamin E, jojoba seed oil, shea butter and more. You can purchase Dr. Hess products directly from their Web site at www.udderoinment.com, or at Amazon.com, and drugstore.com.

Religion God's words are true now and forever Do you ever feel as though no matter how fast you move, you just can’t keep up? I’m not only speaking about tasks and duties, but just the constant changes occurring in society. One day this is the ‘in’ outfit and the next month things have changed. One time it was very important, if you were a woman, that the part in your hair was straight. Well, now it seems that part can be anyplace and it really doesn’t matter if it is straight or not. One time curls are ‘the thing’ and later you can be assured that ‘straight’ is in. If you are a man, you will also know that styles change in clothing as well as personal appearances. What once was the ‘in’ thing now is relegated to the ‘old timers’. I remember years ago when my daughters were in high school. The skirts were so short and the hair so long and so straight. I really thought that had passed into ‘history’ but that’s not the way it is. Now I see skirts that are even shorter, and hair that is both longer and ‘straight’ is stylish again. I’ll admit. I can’t keep up so at my age, I’ll just do what I like. But I am in total agreement with many women who bemoan the fact that it is hard to find a ‘dress’ that doesn’t look like it should be worn by a teenager or at least someone very young. It seems we live in a society where things seem to change from year to year not only in fashion but also in our homes. There was a time when harvest gold or avocado green were the ‘thing’ for kitchens. Now, if I am to believe the home decorators on television,

Doris Gvillo stainless steel is the only way to go. Sorry, I have white and I can’t quite justify the expense of changing it. So are there some things that shouldn’t change…even though at times they do. In my mind, there are certain moral values that I hold dear and I surely don’t intend to change. Honesty, loyalty, dependability, commitment, faithfulness, forgiveness, and I guess I could go on for quite a bit longer, but I’ll stop there. These are attributes that I think should not change because they are values that provide a foundation for how to live in our lives. They seem a great deal more important than fashions that change our outward appearance. When all of our moral values disappear, our society changes and not for the better. I suppose thinking about ‘change’ made me recall an article I read recently that made me ponder some of the values in our society. It was an article about the Reformation and it spoke of how four letters used during that period in history denoted an important message. The letters were V.D.M.A. I had no idea what they stood for or could possibly mean. But the author soon explained that they were the first initials of a Latin statement. I’ll pass it on to you, but I doubt in all honesty that I will be able to remember it. It is “Verbum, Donimi, Manet in Aeternum” If you are like me, you are now wondering just what in the world

those words mean. Well, luckily the author shared that information. They are “The Word of the Lord endures forever.” What a great and powerful truth…a truth that we can trust and build our lives upon. If you are a Biblical scholar, (I can’t pretend I am) you will know that our scripture tells us of countless individuals who knew that what God promised did come into fruition. Whether the promises made by God were promises for good or promises citing what would happen for lapses of faith …God’s word remained true. God has offered salvation through Jesus’ death on the cross. He has promised mercy and has warned about judgment. I, for one, can’t take His word lightly because I guess I really believe not only that God’s words endure forever, but also that they can be trusted.

Each and every day change comes. We need only turn on our radios or televisions early in the morning to learn what has happened. And for the most part, the things reported involve, war, murder, traffic accidents, another drop in the stock market, still more unemployment, and on and on. Each and every day brings another disaster, either natural or manmade. If we only focused on the bad, life would offer little promise. But we know that there is much good in our world. It is only that the focus seems to be on ‘the unusual and the bad’. If we study history or if we read Scripture, we will find that through the centuries, life has always held troubles, evil, and also periods of joy and prosperity. Through it all, God’s word remains the same, truthful and also eternal. While change may come into our

lives by circumstances beyond our control, one thing remains true, God is the same today, tomorrow and forever and His word can be trusted. I know that shortly after I write this article, I will not be able to remember those letters V.D.M.A. let alone the Latin words they stand for, but I can assure you that the essence of those words…”The Word of the Lord endures forever” will remain in my heart forever. And on those words, we can build a life knowing we have been promised that He is with us always. I’ve said before I worry and I think it is time to try my best to cease those fretful times, and focus on God’s promises because they will never vary, they will never change, and they are true forever and ever. The flavors of autumn Three cocktails to help usher in the season By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Although we hate to see summer wind down, it is a lot of fun to look forward to comfy sweaters, bon fires, hay rides, football, Halloween and changing leaves. If you are planning some adult fall festivities, be sure to try some of these cocktail recipes to liven up the fun. As the cool breeze consumes the air, three vivid cocktails reflect the shifting seasons with innovation and allure. Renowned New York City Mixologist Jonathan Pogash channels the flavors of the season using festive ingredients to elevate autumn and winter occasions. For a Halloween cocktail, entice guests with the thrilling flavors in the Corzo Bite, a vampire inspired blood orange cocktail. Highlights

include festive colorings: reminiscent of the crimson shades of blood; “bloody” ingredients: a bloody illusion is created with ripe blood oranges and homemade red grenadine; bite garnish: the strawberry syrup garnish on the glass creates and tasty vampire bite effect. Corzo Bite 1 1/2 parts Corzo Silver Tequila 1/2 parts Campari 1 part fresh blood orange juice 1/4 parts blood (aka homemade grenadine) ** 2 parts Jarritos Tamarindo Soda Process: Build all ingredients into a highball glass filled with ice. Add the “blood” at the end. Garnish: blood orange wheel and strawberry syrup ** Home-made grenadine: Add equal parts white sugar and POM pomegranate juice together and dissolve sugar over high on stove-

top. When dissolved, add several drops of orange flower water, simmer on low heat for 10 mins., chill, and serve. ** If blood oranges are not available, use a slice of regular orange that is soaking in “blood” as a garnish. ••• Give thanks with the flavors of muddled pear and sweet honey in the Corzo Pilgrimage. This crisp cocktail will warm taste buds on a cool Thanksgiving night. Highlights Include innovative flavor: pear, honey, and tequila add a light sweetness that pairs well with a variety of desserts; autumn garnishes: topped with fresh apple and nutmeg for a added taste of fall; vibrant colors: the drink’s yellow hue adds a tasteful hint of color to the décor. The Corzo Pilgrimage 1 part Corzo Silver Tequila 3 parts Martini-Rossi Prosseco

An English muffin for the perfect burger NEW YORK (AP) – Michael Symon is a man who likes to think beyond the traditional sesame seed burger bun. In February, the Food Network Iron Chef blew away the competition at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s annual

Burger Bash challenge with a beef patty topped with his own pastrami, Swiss cheese and coleslaw — all layered on a brioche bun. And now he gives AP’s 20 Burgers of Summer series his Lola burger, a super-moist burger

made from three grinds of beef and topped with pickled red onions, cheddar cheese and a spicy ketchup — all nestled in a toasted English muffin.

Beyond finding the right bun for the burger, Symon also spent three years perfecting the right ratio of the different cuts of meat — brisket, cheek and sirloin — as well

as settling on a cooking method. Today, the burger is one of his signature dishes at his Cleveland restaurant, Lola. See "BURGER" on Page 24
