The Mother Road in Madison County

Local author takes unique look at Route 66 By WENDY WOOD For The Edge Local author Cheryl Eichar Jett has written a fourth book. The book, “Route 66 in Madison County” is part of the ongoing series “Images of America” and the second on historic Route 66. The newest addition to the series contains a history of the segment of Route 66 that runs through Madison County, following is an excerpt: “Route 66 zigzagged southwest across Madison County, Illinois, before crossing the Mississippi R i v e r i n t o M i s s o u r i . Va r i o u s alignments of this segment of the ‘ M o t h e r R o a d ’ ro l l e d t h ro u g h pastoral farmland, headed down main streets, and later straightened as it bypassed towns. From 1926 to 1977, the path of the highway c h a n g e d n u m e ro u s t i m e s a n d crossed the Mississippi River on no less than five different bridges. Along the way motorists watched for the blue neon cross on St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to guide their nighttime travel; they counted on the doors of the Tourist Haven, Cathcart’s, or the Luna Cafe to be open for business. Travelers crossed their fingers that they wouldn’t get stuck at the bend of the Chain of Rocks Bridge and hoped they could make it up Mooney Hill in the winter. A later alignment took motorists right by Fairmount Park and Monks Mound.” The book also has over 200 vintage black-and white images from various sources.

Chapter three is dedicated to the city of Edwardsville. Jett has lived in six cities in Illinois and is a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Alum. Those interested in the book or meeting the author can attend the following events: Thursday, Sept. 30 6 p.m to 8 p.m. Wine Tasting at Market Basket 447 South Buchanan St. Edwardsville Thursday, Oct. 14 7 p.m. P re s e n t a t i o n o n R o u t e 6 6 i n Madison County Sponsored by Madison County Genealogical Society and Edwardsville Public Library Edwardsville Public Library 112 South Kansas St. Edwardsville Sunday, Oct. 17 Noon to 5 p.m. Leclaire Parkfest Leclaire Park Edwardsville Sharing a booth with fellow Arcadia author Cindy Reinhardt, author of “Leclaire” Saturday, Dec. 4 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Dec. 5 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Olde Alton Craft Fair Alton High School 4200 Humbert Rd. T

here is an annual speaker series that has a lineup like no other. Maryville University is again presenting its popular St. Louis Speakers Series, which takes place over the next several months at Powell Symphony Hall, located on North Grand just North of the Fabulous Fox, in downtown St. Louis. The featured speakers appearing in the series are a unique mix that will offer interesting information for both men and women, of all ages. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International and host of CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS will kick off the series on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010. He is a frequent commentator and author about issues related to international relations, trade and American foreign policy. American novelist, essayist, short story writer, biographer and memoirist Elizabeth Glibert will be the speaker on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Her best-known book, “Eat, Pray, Love” spent 180 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List. The film of the same name was released this past summer, with Julia Roberts playing the roll of Gilbert in the film. Ben Carson, celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon, will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Dr. Carson is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008. He is the author of three bestselling books, “Gifted Hands,” “The Big Picture,” and “Think Big.” The first book is an autobiography, and the other two are about his personal philosophies of success that incorporate hard work and a faith in God; Carson is a Seventhday Adventist. Former presidential speech writer Peggy Noonan, will speak on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011. Noonan is the author of seven books on politics, religion, and culture and is a weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal. She was a speech writer and special assistant to President Ronald Reagan. Journalist Lisa Ling may be best remembered for her role on “The View,” but Ling moved on in 2002 to work for National Geographic Explorer. She has hosted several in-depth reports on several tough subjects: human trafficking in Ghana, gang rapes in the Congo, bride burning in India and more. Environmental Advocate and Attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be the guest on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Son of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy and

nephew of John F. and Edward M. Kennedy, he specializes in environmental law and is co-host of “Ring of Fire” on the Air America Radio network. The series’ final presentation will be a first-time ever debate between former Bush advisor Karl Rove and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Both have been known to be on opposite sides of the political fence and sure to hold nothing back in sharing those thoughts and opinions in this historic debate. Rove is former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor for the Bush administration, and Dean is a former Vermont governor and candidate for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination. In true form, the debate will include an opportunity for each to respond to the other ’s presentation, as well as a period for audience questions. Bill Conrow, president and founder of the series, knows this year ’s lineup is one of the best they have hosted. “This year is going to be different than any other year we’ve had before,” said Conrow. “While all of our speakers are unique, we are extremely excited about the introduction of a debate with two of the most well-known and highly-respected men in the political world. It is our hope that this is just the first of many powerhouse debates to come to the series in the future.” “This season provides an incredible opportunity for the students, faculty and St. Louis community to hear some of the great thinkers and leaders of this time,” noted Mark Lombardi, Ph.D., president, Maryville University. “Each of these speakers will have the audience on the edge of their seats. The question session is thoughtful and energetic – just like St. Louis.” All of the presentations, with the exception of Noonan’s (which will be on a Thursday), will take place on Tuesday nights at Powell Symphony Hall, beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are sold by series subscription only and prices range from $285 to $420 per person. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the ticket office as soon as possible to order their seats. For more information, visit www. stlouisspeakersseries.org or call 314-533-7888. Presented by Maryville University, the series also is sponsored by the law firm Gallop, Johnson & Neuman, L.C., PBS station KETC-TV, St. Louis Public Radio station KWMU (90.7 FM), and The St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association. Music Tuning in Music of the Baroque expands season M u s i c o f t h e B a ro q u e h a s expanded its season to include two more performances for the upcoming 2010–11 concert season. The season, Music of the Baroque’s 40th, opens September 26 with Purcell’s Dido and Aenaes and runs through May 23. In the first significant expansion of the concert season in more than a decade, in 2010–11 Music of the Baroque will present 19 performances of eight concert programs. All programs except the ensemble’s traditional holiday brass and choral concerts will be presented at the 1500-seat Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. The season also includes six performances at 900-seat First U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u rc h i n Evanston and Music of the Baroque’s début at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Holiday concerts will be offered at St. Michael’s Church in Chicago, Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, and Divine Word Chapel in Northbrook. “We’re delighted to mark Music of the Baroque’s 40th season with an expanded schedule of concerts at both the Harris Theater and on the north shore,” said Executive Director Karen Fishman. “The commitment and enthusiasm of our audience, and the generosity of our donors, have made it possible for us to reach this milestone in our performing history, and we look forward to many more years of bringing Chicago musiclovers superb concerts.” Music by Purcell opens season Music of the Baroque’s 2010–11 concert season opens with works by the great English musical dramatist Henry Purcell, including

his miniature masterpiece Dido and Aeneas. Music Director Jane Glover leads the orchestra, chorus, and soloists in performances Sunday evening, September 26, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Monday evening, September 27, at the Harris Theater, with mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó in the title role. The program also includes music from Timon of Athens and the ode to St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, “Welcome to all the pleasures.” Principal Guest Conductor Nicholas Kraemer takes the podium i n N o v e m b e r f o r a p ro g r a m showcasing the acclaimed Music of the Baroque chorus, hailed earlier this year by Opera News as “one of Chicago’s musical glories.” George Frideric Handel’s exhilarating setting of the psalm Dixit Dominus, with which Nicholas Kraemer made his Music of the Baroque début in 2001, will be heard along with Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria and instrumental music by Handel. Performances are Sunday evening, November 7, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Tuesday evening, November 9, at the Harris Theater. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio to be heard in December Jane Glover returns in early December to lead the Music of the Baroque orchestra, chorus, and soloists in the ensemble’s first performances in more than two decades of Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental Christmas Oratorio. Scottish tenor Paul Agnew, whom the Chicago Tribune called “simply miraculous” in his appearance with Music of the Baroque in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, will sing as Evangelist and tenor soloist in these concerts. Soprano Lisa Saffer and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Rivera, both making their débuts with the ensemble, and baritone Sanford Sylvan will also

be heard. Performances of the Christmas Oratorio are Sunday evening, December 5, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Tuesday evening, December 7, at the Harris Theater. Five performances of Music of the Baroque’s traditional Holiday Brass and Choral Concerts will also be offered in December. Music from the 16th and 17th centuries, performed by the Music of the Baroque chorus and eight-part brass ensemble, will be heard Thursday evening, December 16, at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest; Friday evening, December 17, at St. Michael’s Church in Chicago; and at Divine Word Chapel in Northbrook on Saturday afternoon and evening, December 18, and on Sunday afternoon, December 19. The conductor will be Music of the Baroque’s newly-named chorus director, William Jon Gray. Orchestral programs begin the New Year Music of the Baroque’s first concerts of the new year feature music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leopold Mozart, and Haydn. Londoner Jane Glover leads the orchestra in two of Haydn’s “London” symphonies, Nos. 102 and 104. Principal bassoon William Buchman will be heard in the Mozart bassoon concerto, and coprincipal trumpet Barbara Butler in his father Leopold Mozart’s trumpet concerto. Performances are Sunday evening, January 23, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Monday evening, January 24, at the Harris Theater. A second program showcasing the principal players of the Music of the Baroque orchestra follows in mid-March. Nicholas Kraemer leads three of J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Nos. 3, 4, and 6, as well as a triple violin concerto from volume two of Tafelmusik by Georg Philipp

Telemann, and music by Georg Muffat. These concerts, scored for intimate forces, take place Sunday evening, March 13, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Monday evening, March 14, at the Harris Theater. Handel’s Messiah to be performed during Lent Jane Glover returns in April to lead the Music of the Baroque orchestra, chorus, and soloists in her first-ever performances with the ensemble of Handel’s Messiah— originally composed for performance during Lent, and arguably the most beloved work in the choral repertoire. Soprano Elizabeth Futral, mezzo-soprano Catherine WynRogers, tenor John McVeigh, and baritone Christòpheren Nomura are the featured soloists. Performances of Messiah are Friday evening, April 15, at the Harris Theater, and Sunday afternoon, April 17, at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Music of the Baroque’s 40th anniversary season comes to a close in May with a program of Mozart’s final three symphonies, Nos. 39, 40, and 41. Mozart authority Jane G l o v e r, w h o s e p e r f o r m a n c e s of the composer ’s symphonies with Music of the Baroque have drawn consistent praise, leads the orchestra in concerts Sunday evening, May 22, at First United Methodist Church in Evanston, and Monday evening, May 23, at the Harris Theater. “Catfish”

The problem with writing about this documentary is that you have to write about it — and potentially divulge the many twists it has in store. Know this much, at least: You should see it, and you should force yourself to learn as little about it as possible beforehand. Directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost didn’t know what they were in for, either. They started out making one kind of movie and in no time found themselves lens-deep in something completely different. That they and their subject, Ariel’s brother Yaniv Schulman, followed this path wherever it would lead — and let us go along for the ride — is what’s so exciting about this genre. These guys just picked up their hand-held cameras and started shooting, and while that’s often an exercise in useless narcissism, “Catfish” actually has some revelations as it moves from comedy to romance to places beyond that we shouldn’t mention. Yaniv (or Nev, as he’s known) is a photographer in his mid-20s living in New York City. He strikes up an innocuous, long-distance friendship with 8year-old Abby, who saw one of his photographs in her local Michigan newspaper, made a painting of it and had her mom, Angela, ship it to him. Soon a Facebook and phone relationship develops. Ariel (or Rel) and their friend Henry keep shooting, thinking maybe they’ll make a movie about this art prodigy. Then they make a road trip to meet the family. RATED: PG-13 for some sexual references. RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Easy A”

High s c h o o l t e e n a g e r O l i v e P e n d e rg h a s t (Emma Stone) breezes through phrases like “terminal illogical inexactitude,” makes elaborate Google Earth metaphors and does it all without arrogance or even an upturned eyebrow. She is, in short, way out of any teenage boy’s league. Olive accidentally develops a reputation as an “easy” girl after — to satiate her badgering best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) — she lies about losing her virginity. The rumor, spread by the school’s resident religious zealot Marianne (Amanda Bynes), moves at the speed of Twitter. Like a young actor, Olive embraces the role, even pinning a red “A” to her provocative outfits in an ode to Hester Prynne. For all its Hawthorne quoting, “Easy A” is clearly the stepchild of John Hughes. Will Gluck’s stylish direction of Bert V. Royal’s

nimble, word-stuffed script results in a whip-smart film. It’s a terrifically deadpan, lively performance from Stone, but the adults nearly steal the film. With Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen sexuality, language and some drug material. RUNNING TIME: 93 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Jack Goes Boating”

Directorial debuts by actors are sometimes scene-chewing, ego-stroking exercises. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s film, so refreshingly bereft of those qualities, is more content with humility and authenticity. Quiet and stuttering, Jack is a limo driver with the goal of landing a job with the MTA. Though apparently a sad sack, he shows hints of vibrancy, like a love for reggae. When his married friends, Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega), set him up with Connie (Amy Ryan), he’s spurred to self-improvement. He learns to cook and Clyde — in the film’s best scenes — teaches him to swim. As Jack and Connie’s love blooms, Clyde and Lucy’s marriage is falling apart. The acting is top notch, particularly from Ortiz and Rubin-Vega, who both (along with Hoffman) starred in an earlier Broadway version by playwright Bob Glaudini. An ancestor of Paddy Chayefsky’s “Marty,” Hoffman’s film contains none of the easy, syncopated lilt of a reggae tune, but it moves to the awkward beat of life. Reespek, mon. R for language, drug use and some sexual content. 90 minutes. Three stars out of four.

“Never Let Me Go”

Philosophically provocative and achingly sad, “Never Let Me Go” manages to touch the mind and the heart at once, and with equal measure. Longtime video director Mark Romanek, whose last feature was the haunting “One Hour Photo” from 2002, has made a film that’s sumptuously gorgeous and filled with sterling performances. The textures, the lighting — everything is carefully crafted but never stuffy, and, at times, even a little gritty in an appealing way. But, based on the novel by acclaimed “Remains of the Day” author Kazuo Ishiguro, “Never Let Me Go” also raises intriguing questions about medical ethics and the nature of humanity itself. Some may find its tone suffocatingly heavy, and the score can feel a bit melodramatic and intrusive here and there. But if you give into it, you’ll find yourself

sucked into this melancholy alternate world, an ambitious hybrid of sci-fi drama and coming-of-age romance set in a British boarding school. That’s where the tale begins in the late ’70s, at the exclusive Hailsham. Prime among the students are Kathy, Tommy and Ruth, whose tentative love triangle at age 11 will form the film’s dramatic arc (as adults, they’re played by Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley). In adapting Ishiguro’s book, screenwriter Alex Garland (”28 Days Later”) reveals the mystery of the children’s unusual existence slowly and suspensefully, through details and gestures that are small and spare. RATED: R for some sexuality and nudity. RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“The Town”

This may not have quite the emotional heft of “Gone Baby Gone,” Ben Affleck’s startlingly assured 2007 directing debut. What it has instead, though, is a greater technical complexity, a larger scope, and the promise of a director who’s well on his way to establishing a distinctive vision and voice. Affleck also has a way with his actors — unsurprising, having been one himself for so long and not always getting the credit he deserves — and he’s once again attracted some tremendous talent: Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and Chris Cooper, who leaves his mark in just one powerful scene. Even Blake Lively is surprisingly good, playing against type as a damaged single mom. But besides directing and co-writing the script with Peter Craig and Aaron Stockard, Affleck himself is at the center of the action in front of the camera, starring as Doug MacRay, the leader of a Boston bank-heist crew, and giving the best leading performance of his career. During the group’s latest crime, Doug’s volatile best friend (Renner) takes a hostage of the bank manager (Hall), but when they realize later that she lives just a few blocks away in insular Charlestown, they check up on her to determine whether she might have seen anything. Doug treats her with unexpected kindness, then ends up befriending her, then falls for her — and she falls for him, too, not knowing she’s getting involved with the thief who just turned her world upside-down. RATED: R for strong violence, pervasive language, some sexuality and drug use. RUNNING TIME: 128 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Movies “The Town” reveals Affleck’s talent By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press “The Town” may not have quite the emotional heft of “Gone Baby Gone,” Ben Affleck’s startlingly assured 2007 directing debut. But besides directing and cowriting the script with Peter Craig and Aaron Stockard, Affleck himself is at the center of the action in front of the camera, starring as the leader of a Boston bank-heist crew and giving the best leading performance of his career. (Yes, of course everyone enjoyed “Chasing Amy,” but previously he’d stood out best as a supporting player in films like “Hollywoodland,” “Extract,” “Boiler Room” and “Shakespeare in Love.”) And so here he is, in a location he knows well surrounded by actors at the top of their game, making a movie that, like “Gone Baby Gone,” oozes authenticity. Locals will split hairs, since Affleck is from Cambridge and the movie takes place in Charlestown — and there’s even a thrillingly staged police

And yes, everyone gets the accent right, something that can often go so horribly wrong in a movie set in New England. Based on the novel “Prince of Thieves” by Chuck Hogan, “The Town” focuses on a group of lifelong friends living in

Charlestown, just across the Zakim Bridge from Boston. Having grown up poor amid the impenetrable cycle of crime and drugs, they haven’t got much going for them — except their meticulous ability to rob banks and armored cars and get away clean. Affleck is their leader, Doug MacRay, whose father (Cooper) was a pretty legendary criminal in the neighborhood himself before being sent to prison for life.

Doug had a chance to leave Charlestown and forge a better future as a professional hockey player, but his temper cost him his big break. Now, along with his best friend Jem (Renner) and a couple of other guys, he pulls off these perfectly timed heists for the local crime boss, a surly Irish florist played by the always-welcome character actor Pete Postlethwaite. During their latest crime, the

volatile Jem takes a hostage of bank manager Claire Keesey (Hall), but when they realize later that she lives just a few blocks away in Charlestown, they check up on her to determine whether she might have seen anything. Doug treats her with unexpected kindness, then ends up befriending her, then falls for her — and she falls for him, too, not knowing she’s getting involved with the thief who just turned her world upside-down.

Emma Stone has been wowing me for about a year now and I love what she’s done here as Olive Penderghast, the central character in “Easy A,” a new movie that doesn’t replace Mean Girls in the modern pantheon of classic comedy, but certainly draws on its success to keep those of us who want the genre to survive swimmingly happy. It eventually gets her in a little trouble, though, when her best friend, Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka), questions her about her love life. Shy about her attraction to a cute boy (Penn Badgley), Olive’s been creating fictional boyfriends and other conquests for some time to keep her vivacious and flirtatious friend quiet. Things take a dicey turn when an overheard exaggeration

ripples through the grapevine and gives our heroine that last thing any young lady wants - a reputation. It takes her a few days to realize exactly what her falsehoods have created, but Olive is considered the school trollop before any time at all. Like no pseudo-tramp before her, the divine Ms. Penderghast uses the notoriety to her advantage, having fun with the rumors and perpetuating them when she sees fit. Desperate classmates, in fact, begin to seek her out for her skills. A closeted young man (Dan Byrd) pays her to be his “girlfriend” to keep the gaybashing bullies off his scent. "Money Never Sleeps" hits the mark By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press Oliver Stone was making a statement on the glibly moneyhungry times when his “Wall Street” came out in 1987 and, with it, the iconic figure of Gordon Gekko declaring that greed, for lack of a better word, was good. Twenty-three years later, greed is still getting a lot of people into a lot of trouble. The entire country, in fact. And so Stone’s latest, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” is the rare sequel that not only feels relevant but necessary. Of course, his hindsight is 20/20. Everyone’s is. But here, Stone takes the economic collapse of 2008 and places Gekko — played masterfully by Michael Douglas, returning to the role that earned him an Academy Award — in the middle of it. Having been released from federal prison after serving time for securities fraud, money laundering and racketeering, Gekko is now free to swim among even more dangerous sharks than he ever dreamed of being himself. The question becomes: How will he react? Will he use his

shrewdness to try and beat them at their game, or will he actually have found a moral center during his time behind bars? That story line alone could have provided the basis for one meaty, worthwhile movie. “Money Never Sleeps” also crams in a fatherdaughter story, a few different mentor-protege stories and a romance. It’s big and loud and brash in an almost operatic way — and knowingly, joyfully so. For a movie about a depressing topic that we’re all-too familiar with, “Money Never Sleeps” is surprisingly entertaining. The dialogue from Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff is biting and propulsive, and the hugely esteemed ensemble cast is a kick. Besides Douglas, who’s better than ever even as a toned-down snake, Shia LaBeouf is solid as an ambitious young trader — he feels like a grown-up, finally — and the two stars have a couple of electric exchanges. But there are plenty of showy supporting roles, as well. A beefedup, suspendered Frank Langella provides both gravitas and humor as founder of the powerful Keller

Zabel Investments; he also serves as a father figure to LaBeouf’s Jacob Moore. Susan Sarandon chews up the scenery as Jacob’s tacky, talkative mother, a former nurse who’s been enjoying the good life as a high-end Long Island real estate agent. And Josh Brolin is a formidable villain as Bretton James, a billionaire partner at a rival investment bank who ruins Keller Zabel with rumors of debt, then arranges a brutal takeover. Just listening to him describe why he has a particular Goya painting in his office is intimidating. Most of the time, simply through the sheer enormity and force of this juggernaut, it all works. “Money Never Sleeps” looks fantastic — the work of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Broken Embraces”) — with its shimmering aerial shots of Manhattan. The place rises from the Hudson River like Oz, an idealized, bustling city of endless possibility (although Stone

Ask Dr. Jacobs Clean, Clear, and Confident

didn’t need to add split screens and tickers running through skyscrapers to magnify the sense of movement). Every sleek highrise office and modern loft offers dazzling views; every character is expensively dressed. As if there weren’t enough ego and testosterone bursting through, Jacob and Bretton even race Ducati motorcycles through the fall foliage to escape the reality of the stock market plummeting. Yes, it’s over-the-top like that. But fun — for a while. Eventually, “Money Never Sleeps” goes soft and loses its way. The romantic subplot between Jacob and Gekko’s estranged daughter Winnie, of all people, feels needless, even though it does allow for the radiant presence

of Carey Mulligan. It also raises some questions: As Gekko himself so astutely wonders, if Winnie hates her father so much, why would she get involved with a man who does the exact same thing, which she found so reprehensible? Jacob’s dream of funding an alternative-energy company is intended to redeem him somewhat, but really, he gets that same gleam in his eyes when it comes to the prospect of getting rich. And what happens in the last couple of scenes especially stands as a stark and almost laughable contrast to where these characters began and what they’re supposedly made of. Then again, as the song goes, money changes everything.

“High” Kathleen Turner returns to the stage in Missouri By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

T

he Repertory Theatre of St. Louis will be presenting “High,” a very intense performance starring Kathleen Turner on their Mainstage. The performances begin on Wednesday, Oct. 13, and continue through Sunday, Nov. 7. “High” was written by Matthew Lombardo and will be directed by Rob Ruggiero. Ms. Turner plays the part of Sister Jamison Connolly, who agrees to sponsor a 19-year-old drug user, thinking that she can help him beat his addiction problem. She, herself, is a reformed alcoholic. She is tough talking and does not fit the typical nun persona, but her reliance on God is her saving grace. Through her acceptance of this challenge, her own faith is tested. Turner ’s character searches within herself to use the knowledge she has as a rehabilitation counselor, but at times it contradicts her religious faith. She begins to question her belief in her spiritual teachings when there becomes a real doubt as to

whether a person can really change. “High” explores the universal themes of truth, forgiveness, redemption and human fallibility. Kathleen Turner, a native of Springfield, Mo., is a wellknown big screen actress with her previous performances in “Body Heat,” for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination, “Romancing the Stone” and “Prizzi’s Honor,” both of which earned her Golden Globe Awards. She received a Golden Globe nod along with an Academy Award nomination for “Peggy Sue Got Married” and another Golden Globe nomination for “War of the Roses.” She also starred in several other critically acclaimed movies throughout her career. Turner is also no stranger to the Broadway stage with performances in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Indiscretions,” “The Graduate,” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” Some of those performances earned Tony nods. More recently, Ms. Turner had a major recurring role last season playing the role of Sue Collini on the Showtime series “Californication.” Her role in “High” has already

earned the critics’ praises. Kathleen Turner ’s appearance is supported by a grant from the

Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation. Evan Jonigkeit is also raising eyebrows for his part as Cody Randall, hustler and addict. He too has been seen in films “Calendar Girl,” “The Gift,”

You Can’t Take It With You, a play in three acts, first debuted at the Booth Theatre in New York City in the winter of 1936, running for nearly two years with over 830 performances. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, this romantic comedy has since been adapted for both film and television and takes audiences everywhere on a laughfilled adventure. Wr i t t e n b y t ru e m a s t e r s o f comedy, Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, You Can’t Take It With You is a light-hearted story filled with crazy antics about a truly idiosyncratic family trying to be on their best behavior when their “normal” daughter’s boyfriend and parents come over for dinner. The story begins when Alice Sycamore announces to her eccentric family that she is in love with Tony, the son of a rather rich and conservative family—the polar opposite of the Sycamore’s. Worried that her father ’s snake collection and sister’s deep aspiration to become a ballerina, despite her uncanny inability to dance, will embarrass her, Alice attempts to get her family to act as normal as possible. When Alice finally invites Tony and his parents over to her quirky family’s house for dinner, lively and noisy events take place, inevitably leading to exploding fireworks and a hilarious mess! You Can’t Take It With You showcases the inherent differences in people, teaches us lessons about life and family, and is sure to captivate audiences of all ages!

Dining Delights

Surf & Sirloin Fine dining in Des Peres

By BILL TUCKER Of the Edge

A

ny restaurant that offers something called the Flintstone Steak is likely to be a treat.

That proved true at Surf & Sirloin, a slightly-upscale eatery on Manchester Road in Des Peres. Officially named Kari’s Surf & Sirloin, the restaurant is operated by owners Larry and Aleka Karagiannis and their four sons. And it lives up to its name, focusing its offerings on a variety of seafood dishes and USDA prime beef selections. Surf & Sirloin doesn’t fall into the kid-friendly category, but every restaurant doesn’t need to. That’s why there’s Chuck E. Cheese’s. What Surf and Sirloin does offer is a complete and delicious meal served in a warm setting by an attentive, but unobtrusive staff.

Appetizers include shrimp cocktail, Blue Point oysters, shrimp tempura, oysters Rockefeller and toasted ravioli – hey, it’s St. Louis – in the $6 to $10 ranger. And note now that as with any seafood that has to be transported from the East Coast, West Coast or Gulf Coast, some menu items are subject to availability. Soups include a daily selection, beef vegetable and New England clam chowder. A house, Greek or Caesar salad can be added to any meal and a table Caesar salad – plenty for two people – is priced at $14. Soups and salads are not included with entrees. The entrees are essentially

divided into three categories: beef, seafood and eclectic. The beef menu offers a pretty impressive variety of steaks including – a 6-ounce filet mignon, a 9-ounce pepperloin, a 14-ounce New York strip, a 16-ounce ribeye and a 22-ounce porterhouse. All fall somewhere between the $23.50 and $35 price range. There’s a chateaubriand bouquetiere for two – a 16-ounce center cut tenderloin served with a bouquet of fresh vegetables for $65. And then there’s the Flintstone steak, a bone-in, dry-aged ribeye. It can be had in 26-ounce or 37ounce versions for $34 and $46 respectively. The Colorado rack of lamb, served Greek style, runs $33. On the seafood side, entrees include: salmon dijon, trout almondine, grouper, Gulf shrimp tempura, American red snapper, cod, Maryland style crab cakes, sea scallops, and Dover sole. Those entrees range from $17.50 to $29. South African cold water rock lobster tails and Alaskan king crab legs are also available and

subject to market price. The eclectic side of the menu, where prices run from $15.50 to $25, includes seafood pasta, chicken alfredo, pork rib chops, grilled breast of chicken, chicken chardonnay, chicken marsala, veal piccata and veal oscar with asparagus. The beef and seafood entrees are served with a choice of starches – baked potato – and the vegetable of the day. Premium side dish substitutions at $2.50 apiece are creamed/sauteed spinach, twice-baked potato and fresh asparagus. (I’ve always wondered why asparagus is considered a premium. If someone paid me $2.50, I might eat it.) As mentioned, the service at Surf & Sirloin is exceptional – just the right amount of attention without being annoying. And the food is very good. Surf & Sirloin is located at 13090 Manchester Road in Des Peres, just west of Interstate 270 near West County Center. For more information, call (314) 822-3637 or visit the restaurant’s Web site, www.surfandsirloin.

Dining Delights Gluten-free food the latest rage NEW YORK (AP) – Gwyneth Paltrow gushes over gluten-free. Chelsea Clinton’s wedding cake was baked without it. The new Old Spice guy avoids the ubiquitous protein to help stay buff. In fact, odds are good you too have tried — or at least encountered — a product with the gluten removed. Because gluten-free is what lowcarb was a decade ago: The “it” diet discussed on daytime talk shows, promoted by hyper-slim actresses and adopted by masses. Grocery aisles are stocked with the likes of gluten-free pasta, crackers, cereal and beer. Americans are enthusiastically exiling a dietary staple that wasn’t even in most people’s vocabulary a decade ago. But why? Unlike some other dietary boogeymen like trans-fats, gluten is not inherently bad to eat. Only a small percentage of people can’t tolerate the protein, which occurs naturally in wheat, barley and rye. Plus, banning gluten from your diet can be really hard. Not only is gluten an essential element of traditional breads and pastas (it’s the protein that gives them their structure), it often is used as a thickening agent in processed foods, such as ketchup and ice cream. And cutting out gluten is no guarantee of weight loss. The fad seems to be partly fueled by the celebrity factor: Paltrow talks it up on her website, Clinton stirred online chatter this summer when she ordered a gluten-free cake for her big day, and the muscular guy on the funny Old Spice commercials recently told Jay Leno gluten is one of the things he cut from his diet. Then there are the claims that going “G-free” makes you feel more energetic. “I feel better when I don’t do it. If I go out to a restaurant with friends and I have a beer and a plate of pasta I’m going to feel it the next day. No one wants a gluten hangover,” said Silvana Nardone, former editor-in-chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine. Nardone, the mother of a teenage boy with a gluten intolerance, just released a cookbook of gluten- and dairy-free recipes titled “Cooking for Isaiah.” These sort of claims are common, if hard to prove. But that hasn’t slowed the industry’s growth. U.S. sales of gluten-free food has more than doubled since 2005 to over $1.5 billion, according to the market research company Packaged Facts. And the growth spurt is expected to continue at least through 2012. Gluten does affect some people, notably people with celiac disease. But celiacs, who suffer an immune reaction if they eat food with

Pan-fried shrimp and caramelized scallion rice cakes gluten, such as bread or pasta, are estimated to represent less than 1 percent of the population. Some other people have less severe gluten allergies or sensitivities. Dr. Alessio Fasano, director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, figures that up to 7 or 8 percent of the U.S. population have some kind of sensitivity to gluten. Yet about a quarter of U.S. adults are either trying to reduce or completely avoid gluten in their diets, according to the marketing firm NPD Group’s Dieting Monitor. That means most of the people eating gluten-free foods probably don’t have to, but want to. “ S o m e o f t h e p e o p l e w e ’ re talking about most are people who are dabbling in raw foods and dabbling in vegan and dabbling in different things and they see

gluten-free as part of that world,” said Shauna James Ahern, better known as the popular blogger “Gluten-Free Girl.” Ahern, diagnosed with celiac at age 38 after feeling “low-level lousy” her whole life, said that even as dabblers drop the diet, they build awareness of glutenfree, which leads to more people getting diagnosed. That’s why she thinks the diet will still be around in a decade. Many of these gluten watchers are people like Akiia James, a 33-year-old news producer from Durham, N.C., who already was healthy and fit before she decided to cut out gluten and dairy several months ago. “The main thing is just feeling better after you eat, not feeling the weight of eating,” James said. “I mean, I never anymore feel like I’m stuffed ... People who eliminate gluten-rich foods may eat more produce, and therefore have a healthier diet overall, said Dee Sandquist, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Fasano suggests that gluten is generally harder to digest, p e rh a p s b e c a u s e i t w a s o n l y introduced to the human diet about 10,000 years ago. In evolutionary terms, that’s not a lot of time to adapt to digesting a new protein. Dr. Brian Bosworth, associate director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at New York P r e s b y t e r i a n H o s p i t a l / We i l l Cornell Medical Center, noted that while gluten can certainly be an irritant to some people, he wouldn’t make a blanket statement that it’s harder to digest for everyone. “I don’t think that, in general, that there’s a reason to strictly avoid it,” said Bosworth, who has celiac disease. Sandquist says there’s no harm in avoiding gluten, as long as you eat a balanced diet. But she said it can be a challenge to eat a nutritionally sound without gluten, despite the recent proliferation of products. And watch out: just because a product is labeled gluten-free doesn’t mean it’s low in calories. And some gluten-free prepared meals can run high in both calories and salt. “There are just as many calories, if not more, depending on the food choices,” Sandquist said. “It’s all about the food choices.” ••• To keep the first batch of cakes warm while the second cooks, place them in a 200 F oven. A wasabi-spiked mayonnaise or sour cream would make an excellent dipping sauce for these fried cakes.

With God, you never walk alone There are times in all of our lives when we feel ‘alone’. We may even be in a crowd of people but we feel isolated and lonely. When I first lost Bill many of my friends reached out to me and I often went out to dinner with some of them. But it was still an unusual feeling of being alone in your heart when you were well aware you were with others. The first time in a group when the waitress asked about the checks and I had to say, “I’m by myself”, I felt myself close to tears. There are times when we all say to another person, “I know just how you feel” when in truth, no one can know just how another person feels when happiness seems to envelop them or when tragedy strikes. For me, though, there is something about the feel of another putting their arm around my shoulder, clasping my hand, or in some way touching me. It is as though an infusion of love and care passes from one to another. I am delighted that my three grown grandson’s give such wonderful hugs. I’m sure that is all in my head, but nonetheless I believe the feeling of a touch does communicate something to another person. I suppose that is why I was touched to read

Doris Gvillo about how an old dog, a long time family pet, sometimes laid a paw on the owner’s leg or arm. Somehow in my mind, it meant a connection between trusted friends. Maybe that is why the hymn “Precious Lord” always seems to touch me deep down and often brings tears to my eyes. Perhaps it is the fact that my years are adding up very rapidly and sometimes I do feel ‘alone’ in spite of my loving supportive family and many friends. I hear the words in that hymn that often describe my feelings and my mood. When we sing, “I am tired, I am weak, I am worn”, I think ‘yes’ that describes me perfectly. But then the imagine of a gracious and loving God holding my hand and guiding me into the future brings a kind of peaceful reassurance that I am not alone. I am sure that I am not the only person who feels alone and I am equally positive that it isn’t age alone that brings that feeling. It can be worry about a job, concern about an illness, anxiety about a family member or friend, or even worry about the economy and the lack of peaceful coexistence in our world.

Age alone doesn’t cause us to feel alone and often frightened of the future. The writers of many of our hymns must have known fear, loneliness, and sometimes despair because some of the words are so poignant. There are many hymns, both old and new that seem to touch a spot in my heart. They reassure me, they strengthen me, and they reinforce the promises we find in scripture. Music touches my soul. At various times in the church year, certain hymns are a part of the worship service, but there are other times when a hymn is, I’d suppose, chosen to reinforce the message of the day. For me when I am feeling down and depressed a verse or two of “O God, Our Help in Ages Past, Our Hope for Years to Come” never fails to remind me to look back at my life, the life of my family, even the ups and downs of society and to know that whatever happened, God was there and willing and ready to bolster our strength and renew our spirits. But…and I guess this is sometimes our problem. We need to turn to Him, open our hearts and minds to Him, and, above all, trust Him. As I look back, I marvel at the times when my life seems filled with trouble, illness, despair, and even loss. But, there were

those who rallied around, ‘held my hand’, offered comfort and guidance and somehow I ‘muddled’ through. In this simple mind of mine, I am convinced that through those individuals God was ‘holding my hand’. I think they were living examples of the verse that says, “We love because God first loved us.” And so while as I sit to write this I am feeling tired and worn, I am not despairing because I know that just as the hymn says God will “hold my hand lest I fall” and if I but trust, He will lead me ‘through the storm, through the night, and on to the light” because God’s promises never fail. So I think I’ll close, not with a verse from scripture, nor a quote from a hymn, but just something I jotted down on a scrap of paper because it seemed to speak to me. It is, “Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles, but it takes away today’s peace.” May there always be someone to take your hand and offer strength when you feel weak and burdened. And, may you find within your heart the willingness to reach out to others who are hurting and in need. Doris Gvillo is a member of Eden United Church of Christ.
