Matt Winte/The Edge

A foundation has been poured and building materials have been delivered as work progresses at the future site of Hotshots Sports Bar and Grill located on Route 157 in Edwardsville.

Couple realizing their dream November opening eyed for Hotshots on Route 157 By MATT WINTE Of The Edge Hotshots Sports Bar and Grill bills itself as the perfect place to meet with friends and enjoy great food and cold beer. And soon, the residents of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon will be able to do exactly that when Hotshots Sports Bar and Grill opens off Route 157 later this year. Donna and Jim Krueger of Wentzville, Mo., had talked about opening a bar since they got married 17 years ago and while visiting Hotshots, an opportunity presented itself. “My husband and I have talked about this since we’ve been married. This is our dream. We’ve frequented the Hotshots franchise for a long time, as long as we’ve been down here,” Krueger said. “One day my husband was there for lunch and came home and said, “Hey they’re franchising.” The couple began to look into the opportunity and realized it was a good deal and they decided to try it. Aside from the familiarity with the company from being patrons, the support Hotshots provides for people who are new to the industry was a major driver in their choice to get a franchise. “They give us a lot of help, a lot of training… they help us find the location. They help us find the builder. They help us with the training with everything and the

cost was well within our means and we like the Hotshots brand," Krueger said. "We’ve been to several of their locations in the area and we’ve really, really liked what they stand for and the whole business model. We thought it was very successful because both my husband and I have business backgrounds.” Krueger said. The process for the Kruegers began almost two years ago. Part of it came down to finding the right location in Edwardsville, which wasn’t their first choice. “We actually wanted the Wentzville location, but we listened to the owners of Hotshots and they wanted a cooperate store out in Wentzville and they wanted a franchise out here, because they figured the Edwardsville location would be better suited for a franchise location. We didn’t have any problems as my husband and I are from Chicago, so we are used to long commutes,” Krueger said. Looking at the area, they saw how much the area has built up and with SIUE, the Kruegers agreed with the owners that Edwardsville would be a perfect fit. Then it came time to find a site, which proved to be a major hurdle. Initially, a site near Edwardsville High School was considered but because of the 100-foot rule, which doesn’t allow for the sale of alcohol within 100 feet of a school, this property was ruled out.

Several other sites were considered before settling on the property located on Route 157 near Edison’s Entertainment Complex. With the site selected, everything began to come together much quicker. “It was kind of exciting, especially when we started really going around and looking at other sites that really could work and sites that we really liked that were in the price range for what the rent we could sustain,” Krueger said. Getting to see the progress on the plan on her final day at work made it all really sink in. “I think what really made it real for me was my last day at Boeing, when I turned in my badge and walked out the door with all of my stuff and then got into my car and I’m like, 'OK, this is really happening,' that was when it was really real,” Krueger said. With the site selected, work has begun and the restaurant is beginning to come together. “You have to put it in perspective. . . My husband and I have been married for 17 years and this is something we’ve talked about on and off for 17 years and this is year 2014 and we’re finally actually stopping by, parking in the Edison’s parking lot and looking over and saying, 'Oh my gosh, it’s actually going to happen this year,” Krueger said. “You just sit there and say, 'Wow, finally.' You know sometimes people don’t have their dreams

October 2, 2014

come true, but sometimes they do.” Right now Krueger is preparing for training, getting vendors and accounts set up and getting licenses. Construction is projected to wrap up on Nov. 14, but with weather delays that date may be pushed back. The hope is to still to open in November. Krueger describes Hotshots as being primarily a sports bar that serves bar food and has lots of televisions showing all types of sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, mixed martial arts and any other sports. The fact that Hotshots is a true sports bar, where sports are the emphasis and it doesn’t try to be a restaurant, is what Krueger said sets it apart from other establishments. “I think because they gear it towards good, true sports instead of trying to make it a restaurant type. It’s basically a true sports bar. You come in and just seat yourself. It's good cold beer, good wellpriced drinks and you can watch games whenever you want to,” Krueger said. With only a couple of months until opening, Krueger is excited to come to Edwardsville and begin doing business. “I really am excited and I think Edwardsville is going to be a really good location and I think we’re going to do really well and I hope you guys are going to be happy,” Krueger said.

Green Ball has environmental message For The Edge The fifth annual Green Ball will roll out the green carpet in the Delmar Loop to welcome the green-minded movers and shakers of St. Louis for a night of fun philanthropy. Presented by Moonrise Hotel, Green Ball 2014 will be held from 7-11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, in celebration of all things green. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the EarthWays Center, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden that promotes sustainability through environmenta l education and improving the built environment. Ticket prices are $40 for Garden members and $50 for nonmembers. Tickets include locally-sourced and organic appetizers and seasonal cocktails, prepared by the Eclipse Restaurant’s award winning staff, plus complimentary bar service. Swinging hot jazz by Miss Jubilee and visually stunning Vivant entertainers roaming amongst the crowd create a “mod autumnal” theme. To highlight the importance of making events “green,” the ball will be zero waste. Brochures will be printed on recycled paper, food waste will be composted and décor will be eco-friendly. Paper and glass waste will be recycled, and St. Louis’ nationally known “best tasting” tap water will be offered to guests, rather than bottled water. Free valet parking will be provided to carpools of four or more riders. “We’re so pleased to partner with the Moonrise for this fifth annual Green Ball,” said Glenda Abney, director of the EarthWays Center. “It’s a fun and unique way to raise sustainability awareness in St. Louis. It’s also a great way to showcase the various Moonrise green building features. Green Ball guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening, while helpinGreen Ball g

The idea for the Green Ball developed five years ago, when the Moonrise Hotel decided to stage an event to celebrate those

“living green” in the St. Louis area and draw attention to local green businesses and organizations. The EarthWays Center seemed a natural beneficiary. The Moonrise Hotel itself employs extensive green efforts such as hotel-wide recycling and composting, the first hotelbar open-air roof in America made entirely of solar panels, and an

electric vehicle car charging station. During the event, guests may purchase raffle tickets for premium baskets of their choice, including eco-friendly home goods, gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, and energy efficiency items like a home energy audit. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the EarthWays Center. To purchase your Green Ball 2014 tickets, please visit the event webpage or call 314-577-5118. Additional event information may also be found on Facebook. The Green Ball is hosted by EarthWays Center of the Missouri B o t a n i c a l G a rd e n . P re s e n t i n g sponsorship is provided by Moonrise Hotel. If you are interested in sponsoring the Green Ball or making a raffle donation please contact Joyce Gorrell at joyce. gorrell@MOBOT.org or 314-5770220. While the Missouri Botanical Garden’s mission is to protect and preserve plants, the EarthWays Center specifically focuses on helping people learn to live more sustainably. EarthWays offers more than 20 programs and projects on sustainable living and learning for students, educators, business and community leaders, municipalities and green building professionals and contractors in Missouri throughout the year. More than 45,000 households in the St. Louis region hold memberships to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Memberships begin at $65 ($60 for seniors) and offer 12 months of free general admission for two adults and all children ages 12 and under, plus exclusive invitations and discounts. Members help support the Garden’s operations and worldchanging work in plant science and conservation. Learn more at www. mobot.org/membership.

performing La Pistola y El Corazón Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, 7:30 p.m. Meridian Ballroom, Morris University Center Celebrating their 40th Anniversary as a group and the 25th Anniversary of their Grammy-winning release, La Pistola y El Corazón (1989-Best Mexican-American Performance,) Los Lobos will, for the first time, perform the album in its entirety, followed by a set of fan favorites performed acoustically. More than four decades have passed since Los Lobos released their first album, “Just Another Band from East L.A.” Since then, they’ve repeatedly disproven that title—Los Lobos isn’t “just another” anything—but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of its humble roots. Arts & Issues to welcome Los Lobos By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

S

IUE Arts & Issues continues its 30th year anniversary celebration on Oct. 16 with “An evening with Los Lobos” at 7:30 p.m. in the Morris University Center's Meridian Ballroom. The band, celebrating its 40th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of its Grammy-winning release “La Pistola y El Corazón,” will be performing this album in its entirety followed by a set of fan favorites performed acoustically.

Los Lobos, which in Spanish means “the wolves,” was formed in a garage in E. L.A. back in 1973 when members would get together to play. The band's strong Mexican background produced an interesting mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country folk, R&B, blues and traditional Spanish and Mexican music, that Los Lobos drummer Louie Perez once described as “the soundtrack of the barrio.” Los Lobos' roots were firmly set in East L.A. and the group's members were neighborhood legends by the time it won its first Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American/ Tejano Music performance in 1983. Los Lobos recorded their major label debut the following year in 1984 entitled, “How Will the Wolf Survive?” Although the group's “How Will the Wolf Survive?” record was actually inspired by a National Geographic article about wolves in the wild, the band saw parallels to the name in regards to their struggle to gain mainstream rock success while maintaining their Mexican roots. Three decades later after garnering two more Grammys, releasing the wildly successful smash single “La Bamba” and thousands of performances later, Los Lobos still brings its unique sound to the stage with the same intensity of that garage band 40 years ago. Los Lobos still remain the original members of Perez, Cesar Rosas (Vocals, Guitar, Mandolin), Conrad Lozano (Bass, Guitarron, Vocals), David Hidalgo (Vocals, Guitar, Accordion, Percussion, Bass, Keyboards, Melodica, Drums, Violin, Banjo) and Steve Berlin (Saxophone, Percussion, Flute, Midsax, Harmonica, Melodica), who joined Los Lobos after performing on co-producing their breakthrough 1983 EP. Enrique "Bugs" Gonzalez (Drums/Percussion) joined the band in 2011. “Disconnected in New York City,” is the bands latest release that was recorded over two nights in December 2012 at The City Winery in New York City. By design, this album contains those Los Lobos longtime staples performed on tours but also has those Los Lobos gems that were the group's favorites that had somehow fallen by the wayside. According to the Los Lobos Facebook page, “Disconnected in New York City” marks Los Lobos 40th anniversary and “features

fresh interpretations of songs from throughout their three decade recording career, including their first ever live recording of “La Bamba,” their worldwide pop crossover hit from the 1987 film which reached #1 on the U.S. and UK singles chart and whose video won a 1988 MTV Music Video Award. The collection covers the band’s 25 year studio

discography, from “Gotta Let You Know” (a bouncy zydeco rocker driven by Hidalgo’s accordion from How Will The Wolf Survive?) through “Tin Can Trust,” a bluesy rock ballad that was the title cut from their last studio release in 2010.” “Disconnected in New York City” is unique in that it's mainly

acoustic music. Lozano, who plays the Guitarron, explained that they got the idea to do an acoustic album when this venue had hired the group and specifically requested something more acoustic to fit its “smaller dinner house vibe.” Los Lobos members got the idea to record the performances and Lozano noted online that the venue was

“cool with that.” When Los Lobos takes the stage for its SIUE Arts & Issues performance on Oct. 16, it will be performing its Grammy-winning release, “La Pistola y El Corazón,” for the first time in its entirety, for the SIUE Arts & Issues audience. Los Lobos will also perform acoustically a set of fan favorites afterwards. Tickets for Los Lobos as well as the remaining Arts & Issues performances can be purchased online at artsandissues.com or on campus at the Morris University Center welcome desk Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Welcome Desk is closed on Sundays. Call 618-6505194 for additional information about the Arts & Issues season or to obtain a brochure. The SIUE Arts & Issues program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Religion Religion briefs Merkel leads Berlin rally against anti-Semitism

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel has led a rally against antiSemitism, telling thousands of people in Berlin that Jewish life is part of Germany's identity. Germany's Jewish community organized Sunday's rally at the capital's Brandenburg Gate after tensions over the Gaza conflict spilled over into demonstrations in Europe that saw anti-Jewish slogans and violence. Jewish leader Dieter Graumann said the summer saw "the worst anti-Semitic slogans on German streets for many, many decades." Merkel said it pains her to hear of young Jewish parents asking whether they can

Her father was Muslim, and her mother was an Orthodox Christian. She married Daniel Wani, a Christian from southern Sudan, in 2011. Muslim women in Sudan are prohibited from marrying non-Muslims, and children must follow their fathers' religions. In an interview to be aired Monday night on Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File," Ibrahim says she gave birth to her daughter while in prison and shackled at the ankles. She says she refused to give up, even if it meant death.

"Last Days in Vietnam"

There are many differences between America's troubled exit from Iraq and its ramshackle retreat from Vietnam. But the U.S. flight from Saigon as seen in Rory Kennedy's documentary "Last Days in Vietnam" has incredible, unmistakable resonance on the political, ethical and military confusion that occurs when, after years of war, a far-away nation pulls up stakes. These are scenes of a humbled superpower and the terrifying vacuum left behind. South Vietnamese soldiers (allies to the U.S. through years of combat) mobbing the last World Airways flight out of Da Nang as it moves down the runway. Packed refugees crouching around the pool of the U.S. embassy in Saigon. Helicopters being pushed into the ocean so that more could land on a destroyer escort. (The boat, the Kirk, received 17 helicopter loads of refugees.) "It looked like something out of Exodus," remembers an American soldier in the film. The end came two years after a 1973 peace accord, one celebrated with Bloody Marys at the U.S. embassy. But the agreement between President Richard Nixon and the North Vietnamese Army proved empty. After Nixon was impeached, North Vietnam launched a major attack on the South, and streamed down the coast largely unabated. The U.S., tired from the long, aimless war, no longer put up a fight. President Gerald Ford couldn't even get Congress to approve some $700 million in aid, leaving little support for South Vietnam. RATED: Not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them"

"The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them," All the lonely people. Where do they all belong? You won't hear that line in "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them" (more on that title in a moment), a highly absorbing if unwieldy film starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy as a couple struggling to cope — apart and together — with tragedy. In fact, you don't hear any of that famous Beatles song. But it doesn't matter, because you'll probably be hearing it in your head. It's also an apt 12-word summary of the broader life issues the movie addresses. We're all alone, essentially, no matter how close we grow to others. We're born alone, we die alone, and in between, we cope alone. No one can cope for us. Not that "Eleanor," written and directed by Ned Benson in his debut feature, is a total downer of a movie. It can't be, with the luminous Chastain and the appealing McAvoy heading an almost ridiculously high-quality cast. "Eleanor" is about messiness, and risk — in life and in love. But it's not all sad. A word about the format, for those coming in cold: "Eleanor" was originally made as a pair of movies, "Her" and "Him," each a full-length film from the point of view of one character, and made to be seen in either order. Then the Weinstein Company decided to make "Them," a more conventional approach, edited from the other two (which will both be released next month.) Some who saw the first versions at festivals have objected that much has

been lost. But the rest of us need to judge "Them" on its own merits. And it's an engrossing film. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language." RUNNING TIME: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Longest Week"

In " T h e L o n g e s t We e k , " J a s o n B a t e m a n p l a y s a privileged, pampered, narcissistic New Yorker whose sole effort at productivity in life is his meandering work on a novel called "The Directionless Generation." This may be a winking reference to the character himself, who clearly lacks direction, but alas, it's an even more prescient reference to the movie as a whole. There are moments here and there to be enjoyed, mainly for the slick visuals (and wonderfully hip New York apartments), but basically it feels like a directionless enterprise. And though the film is only 86 minutes long, it tends to feel bloated and even a bit tedious by the end — perhaps not an entire generation long, but too long nonetheless. It also feels derivative of other filmmaking styles. Writer-director Peter Glanz, making his debut feature, is clearly a Woody Allen fan; he uses the same jazzy-type music to accompany his dreamily appealing views of New York City, and he likes psychoanalysis scenes, too. Heck, the first scene has our main character, Conrad, venting to his analyst about his troubles with women, and the analyst is none other than Allen favorite Tony Roberts. Conrad even refers to himself as "Jungian." RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content and smoking." RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes. "This Is Where I Leave You"

Somebody dies. Family gathers to mourn. Everybody's stuck in one house, with all their quirks and foibles and enough emotional baggage to fill an aircraft carrier. What could go wrong? Ha ha. What couldn't? This scenario could be a drama or a comedy — or, in the case of "This Is Where I Leave You," both: a dramedy. In the best dramedies, of course, laughter and tears alternate seamlessly and gracefully, and you leave both entertained and enlightened. Alas, this isn't that film. Instead, "This Is Where I Leave You," directed by Shawn Levy and adapted from Jonathan Tropper's novel by the author himself, seems to be constantly questioning — or doubting — what it is. Which means that just when it enters into some meaty issues that deserve serious treatment, it gets nervous and falls into forced comedy — or full-on slapstick. Which can get grating. And it's a shame, because the film has an A-list ensemble cast, headed by Jason Bateman and Tina Fey, but also featuring nice work from Jane Fonda, Connie Britton, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Debra Monk and more. A cast like that deserves an A-list movie; they got maybe a solid B. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language, sexual content and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Tracks"

The movies, it seems, are increasingly headed down paths in the woods, out to open water and, in the case of John Curran's excellent new film "Tracks," into the deepest reaches of the Australian desert. Surely our desire to disconnect, to feel the harshness of nature and the quiet of solitude feeds into the appeal of films like last year's near-wordless sea adventure "All Is Lost" with Robert Redford or the upcoming "Wild," in which Reese Witherspoon hikes the Pacific Coast Trail. But while those movies have their attributes, I'll take "Tracks" for the way it subtly and unsentimentally builds emotionally, step by step, across 1,700 miles. That's the distance traveled by Robyn Davidson ( p l a y e d b y M i a Wa s i k o w s k a ) , w h o s e j o u r n e y w a s chronicled by National Geographic. She then wrote an acclaimed 1980 memoir, "Tracks," about the trip in which she and her dog, Diggity, with four camels in tow, trekked across the Western Australian desert, ending at the Indian Ocean. It's a mad journey that earns her the moniker "Camel Lady" and turned her into a reluctant celebrity. "Tracks" gradually unspools why she's spending half a year alone and in the harshest of conditions, filling in with flashbacks to her mother's suicide and the simultaneous and (to the young Robyn) equally devastating loss of her childhood dog. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, some partial nudity, disturbing images and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Equalizer"

If you were lucky enough to catch Denzel Washington in "A Raisin in the Sun" on Broadway, you saw the hugely charismatic actor portray, in an iconic role, the full complexity of a human being: strengths and weaknesses, attributes and flaws, durability and vulnerability. All topped off, of course, with that boyish Washington charm. Alas, Washington doesn't always choose big-screen roles similarly worthy of his unique talent. This is especially true of "The Equalizer," a mediocre thriller that tries to establish the 59-year-old actor as a middle-aged action hero, a la Liam Neeson. Here, we get to see Washington kill a lot of people. Yawn. OK, he does it in somewhat inventive ways. Still: Yawn. "The Equalizer" isn't a terrible movie, as action sagas go. It just doesn't nearly live up to what it aspires to be, which is a smart, classy update of the 1980s TV series of the same name, about an ex-government agent who spends his retirement as a sort of ultra-violent avenging angel, rubbing out villains who treat good people badly. Changes have been made — liberally. On TV, Robert McCall (Edward Woodward) was a debonair middle-aged guy in a trench coat, collar upturned, cruising the streets of New York in a black Jaguar. Here, no trench coat, no Jaguar, no New York. Director Antoine Fuqua and writer Richard Wenk have moved the action to Boston, and Washington's McCall is a blue-collar type. A widower with few possessions, he spends his days working at the Home Mart, and his nights reading literary classics and drinking tea at the diner. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for strong bloody violence and language throughout, including some sexual references." RUNNING TIME: 131 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Tracks" leaves a mark By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The movies, it seems, are increasingly headed down paths in the woods, out to open water and, in the case of John Curran's excellent new film "Tracks," into the deepest reaches of the Australian desert. But while those movies have their attributes, I'll take "Tracks" for the way it subtly and unsentimentally builds

emotionally, step by step, across 1,700 miles. That's the distance traveled by Robyn Davidson (played by Mia Wasikowska), whose journey was chronicled by National Geographic.

And this, despite the camels, is a movie for the dogs. Rarely has there been a more affecting portrait of a girl and her pup. On her trip, Robyn, in an uncharacteristic moment of affection, sleeps with the photographer (Adam Driver) despite his ceaseless yammering. But he has nothing on Diggity, the black lab whom she tenderly and far more contentedly shares her bed with. Curran, who has an old-fashioned touch for the intimate adventure, is at his best finding the slower rhythms of exotic locales, like the colonial Far East of his W. Somerset Maugham adaptation, "The Painted Veil." And while Curran and cinematographer Mandy Walker give the film an elegant emptiness, "Tracks" is as

much in Wasikowska's fretful eyes as it is the beautifully barren desert. As Driver's Rick Smolan says, she has a problem with people. The desert pulls her as an escape from "the malaise" of her generation and as a refugee away from humans, altogether. When friends visit her shortly before she departs, she cringes at the cacophony of their conversation and bristles at having her photograph taken. She's idolized for the romance of her intrepidness, but for Davidson, it's a necessary withdrawal from society. She tolerates the company of few besides Diggity and her camels, like the Aboriginal elder "Mr. Eddie" (the charming Roly Mintuma), who guides her through sacred territory.

"This is Where I Leave You" should be left alone By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge There have been many movies m a d e a b o u t t h e p re s s u re o f family and family commitment. Some, like Ordinary People and American Beauty, have a tragic and unforgettable spirit. Others aren't as lucky and fall by the wayside. "This is Where I Leave You" will sadly fall into that second category. Using a lovely ensemble cast, including legends of the big and small screens, the movie manages to provide exactly was is expected of it - tepid smugness and dark humor - but fails to inspire or surprise. I think anyone with a large family will agree that those are necessary ingredients in the recipe of life.

The Altman clan should be renamed the Dysfunctionals. That would hit their family dynamic a little closer to home. Upon the unseen death of their patriarch, siblings Judd (Jason Bateman), Wendy (Tina Fey), Paul (Corey Stoll), and Phillip (Adam Driver) are requested by their mother, Hillary (Jane Fonda) to 'sit shiva' in memory of their dad. The concept is ultimately a canned pre-text. The Altmans are hardly Jewish and all the forced togetherness does is give the story a delivery system for the audience. We soon learn that if there was no final wish to keep these folks in the same room, they'd quickly jet away to lead whatever madness is in store for each of them separately. The film takes Judd as its primary

focus. His breakup with his pregnant wife (Abigail Spencer) is precipitated by her dalliance with his boss (Dax Shephard). He mourns their relationship when he can't find the words to describe the loss of his father. Wendy gives him a little shoulder to lean on, but her life with kids and a workaholic husband is almost as screwed up. She's still in love with her high school boyfriend (Timothy Olyphant), who nurses a severe brain injury from one of their youthful indiscretions. He lives across the street and still manages to look gorgeous even with a wicked scar across his forehead. Judd and Wendy usually take sides against Paul for his straightlaced nature and holier-than-thou attitude. He's maintained the family

business for many years and feels that his opinion should matter more than the ones that left town to follow a different dream. He and his wife (Kathryn Hahn), who is also Judd's ex-girlfriend, are struggling mightily to conceive. Paul is the opposite of Phillip, the youngest. His freespirited nature and sophomoric personality wear thin quickly. He brings his significantly older fiancĂŠ (Connie Britton) to the funeral. She's also his therapist and funding his bad lifestyle choices during her own mid-life crisis. So how did these kids turn out so messed up? Look no further than their mother, a famous writer who achieved her highest level of critical success by authoring a family tell-all at the height of the Altman children's

October 2, 2014

adolescence. If anyone had to survive their roughest years while living in a fishbowl, they would be bound to crack up. I would say it's a pleasure to see Fonda back at work, but a look at her filmography will show that she's been constantly at work on various small projects that largely floated under the radar. Her turn here in "This is Where I Leave You" is manipulative, but never shrewish. In fact, it has an uncomfortably sexy aura to it. Even at age 77, some sex symbols never leave that behind. "This is Where I Leave You" runs 103 minutes and is rated R for language, sexual content, and some drug use. I give this film one star out of four.

On their journey, the sheep protagonists show us a secret world, strong and fragile at the same time, capable of communicating the extraordinary beauty of nature to children. The Art of Nick Cave Saint Louis Art Museum plans special exhibit For The Edge The Saint Louis Art Museum will present a free exhibition presenting new works by artist Nick Cave, the Missouri native who has captivated audiences with artworks spanning sculpture, fashion, installation and performance. The exhibition, Currents 109: Nick Cave, opens Oct. 31 and runs through March 8, 2015. The exhibition will include installations in Galleries 249 and 250 in the museum’s new East Building; a new media installation in Gallery 301; and an intervention in Gallery 102, a large gallery devoted to historical African art. The free exhibition will highlight Cave’s remarkable inventiveness, said Nichole Bridges, associate curator in charge, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas and co-curator of the exhibition with Tricia Paik, former associate curator of

contemporary art. Nick Cave is best known for his imaginative and theatrical Soundsuits—wearable sculptures composed of fibers as varied as raffia, hair, yarn, twigs, and items such as buttons, sequins and an array of found objects that Cave finds in flea markets and thrift stores. Soundsuits are named for the audible rustling and rattling these wildly mixed materials create when the sculptures are worn and performed. Once referred to by the artist as “body armor,” Soundsuits t r a n s c e n d p re c o n c e p t i o n s w i t h t h e i r ambiguous identities. While accumulated m a t t e r o f d i s c a rd e d t o y s a n d k i t s c h suggests a critique on consumerism, the kaleidoscopic and tactile qualities of Cave’s meticulously crafted works convey a dazzling vibrancy that both implicates and invites. Cave’s oeuvre resonates with performance

and mixed-media arts from Africa and the African diaspora, such as for ceremonial masquerades and carnival festivities. Both Cave’s Soundsuits and mixed-media African arts are admired as singular works of art in our galleries; yet they were also created for performance in multisensory spectacles complete with dance, music and a community of audience participants. Trained as a visual artist and dancer, Cave animates his Soundsuits through dancers who inhabit and perform them. A Missouri native, Cave was born in Fulton in 1959. He received a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and a MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Cave lives and works in Chicago, where he is chair and professor of fashion design at the Art Institute of Chicago. Cave’s recent solo exhibitions were at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2014), Denver Art Museum (2013) and

October 2, 2014

Peabody Essex Museum, Salem (2013). He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2011) and Kemper Museum, Kansas City (2010), among others. He has received various awards, including the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award (2008) and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2001). The Arts Artistic adventures The Fox to welcome The Piano Guys

AEG Live & Nine Network presents The Piano Guys Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. Live at The Fox Theatre. Tickets are $103, $47.50, $42.50 and $32.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fox Theatre Box Office. Hailing from Utah, The Piano Guys became an Internet sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos. They’ve made over 35 since joining forces in early 2011, including their hit video, an innovative 10-handed version of One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” But it’s the Guys’ highly original blend of classical music with pop that has really been the cause of an Internet phenomenon that has brought them to their major label debut album, The Piano Guys, released on Sony Masterworks on October 2nd, 2012. In the last few months, The Piano Guys have performed on everywhere from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” to “The Today Show” and “Katie.” Their most recent video “Mission Impossible” featuring YouTube violin sensation Lindsey Stirling, continues to build momentum with over 1.5M views in a month. It finds the band and Stirling in a spy thriller as covert operatives while playing their unique take on this famous musical theme. The album features more of the imaginative mash-up arrangements that The Piano Guys are already famous for, including sources ranging from Michael Jackson to Mozart, The Bourne Identity to David Guetta. It also includes an

original song and innovative takes on hits by One Direction, Adele and Christina Perri. But just who are The Piano Guys? Actually, there’s only one piano player, Jon Schmidt, and one other instrumentalist, Steven Sharp Nelson, on cello. Yet the other two Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek - are equally significant members of the group. The Piano Guys’ name comes from Anderson’s piano store in St. George, Utah, which was called The Piano Guys. Looking for an alternative to low-yield conventional advertising, Anderson devised a Facebook promotional page and YouTube channel featuring the most famous pianist he could find – local pianist, Jon Schmidt. A self-described “New Age Classical” player, Schmidt was indeed wellestablished locally, thanks to eight albums and seven piano books of his song transcriptions. He also performed concerts throughout Utah, one of which featured a young guest artist, Steven Sharp Nelson, who adventurously combined traditional cello playing with percussion effects. “I was 15 when I met Jon and started playing with him,” Nelson recalls. “I had to get a ride to shows! But we’ve had a great brotherhood that’s now lasted 20 years.”

The accrediting schools by professional, national, and regional associations of like schools (schools with similar objectives and subject content), has long characterized the American educational scene. Through the years, accreditation of schools has been the most authoritative and reliable index of a school’s concern for integrity toward its students and quality education.
