Premiering in 1896, “Ubu Roi” is considered a precursor to the Theater of the Absurd as well as the surrealist art movement of the early 20th Century. The character Ubi is Jarry’s metaphor for the modern man; he is an antiherof a t , u g l y, v u l g a r, g l u t t o n o u s , grandiose, dishonest, stupid, voracious, cruel, cowardly and evil. The play follows and explores Ubi’s political, martial and felonious exploits and offers a parody-like adaptation of situations and plot lines from
Shakespearean dramas such as Macbeth, Hamlet and Richard III. Due to subject matter and themes, the Department of Theater and Dance Main Season is not recommended for children under age 12. The Arts Artistic adventures Kemper to host Brazilian artist The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University will highlight Brazilian artist Rivane Neuenschwander with “A Day Like Any Other” from Oct. 8 to Jan. 10. Brazilian conceptual artist Rivane Neuenschwander creates playful, ephemeral and often participatory artworks that blur distinctions between author and viewer, object and memory, permanence and temporality. This fall, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other, the artist’s first major midcareer survey. Covering a decade of work, the exhibition reveals a wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice that merges painting, photography, film, sculpture, installation and collaborative action. Like her predecessors Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, Neuenschwander is at once artistic instigator, commissioning agent and social organizer, exploring themes such as nature, language, time and the poetry of the quotidian. The exhibition will highlight three works that invite direct audience participation: Walking in Circles (2000), First Love (2005) and Joe Carioca and Friends (2005). Walking in Circles consists of several circles of varying size rendered in transparent adhesive on the gallery floor. The circles darken over time as they pick up dirt from visitors’ shoes, creating a physical map of movement through the exhibition space. In First Love, participants are asked to describe their “first love” to a forensic sketch artist; the resulting portraits will be displayed in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. For Joe Carioca and Friends, Neuenschwander painted over several pages of a popular Brazilian comic, leaving visible only the speech bubbles and vibrant background colors. Each panel is then transferred to the wall as a large blackboard on which people are invited to draw their own stories. Further highlights include a pair of large-scale environmental installations. In Rain Rains (2002), buckets suspended from the ceiling drip water into corresponding buckets beneath them, creating artificial rain. Every four hours, museum staff will pour the collected water back into the upper buckets, thus maintaining the Sisyphean system of circulation. The second installation, The Conversation (2010), pays homage to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 film of the same title and, like the film, investigates the systematic invasion of privacy in an era of dangerously purposed technology. To stage the piece, the Kemper Art Museum will work with security experts to create an Orwellian environment filled with listening devices. Then, prior to the exhibition’s opening,
October 7, 2010
Neuenschwander will raid the “bugfilled” room in an attempt to uncover those devices — a performance that will be recorded and played back in the partially dissembled exhibition space. In addition to these participatory works and installations, the exhibition will include two recent suites of paintings. For After the Storm (2010), Neuenschwander exposed maps of New York state counties to the elements for the length of the Brazilian rainy season. At a Certain Distance (ExVoto Paintings) (2010) alters the traditional form of the ex-voto — a type of commemorative painting that serves as a remembrance or an expression of gratitude — by removing all reference to pictorial drama or caption, leaving only brilliantly colored abstract spaces. Other works will include The Tenant (2010), a lustrous film that follows the journey of a soap bubble as it drifts through the rooms of an empty apartment; Involuntary Sculptures (Speech Acts) (2001–10), a series of communally evolved sculptures made by customers during conversations at bars and restaurants near Neuenschwander’s home in Brazil; and A Day Like Any Other (2008), an installation consisting of modified flip clocks in which all numbers have been replaced by zeros. Indeed, by constantly advancing but leading nowhere, these altered clocks — which will be placed all around the museum building — highlight the theme of temporality that runs throughout Neuenschwander ’s work. Rivane Neuenschwander was born in 1967 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where she currently lives and works. Over the past 20 years she has exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at the South London Gallery, London; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; Saint Louis Art Museum; and Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Wien, Austria; Stedelijk Museum, The Netherlands; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Guggenheim Museum, New York. She was featured in the 55th Carnegie International (2008); the 28th São Paulo Biennale (2008); T2, the Torino Triennale (2008); the 9th Havana Biennial (2006); the 51st Biennale di Venezia (2005); and the first Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art (1999).

The Arts A Season for the Child presents “Treasure Island” A Season for the Child (SfC)—the family-oriented live theater season sponsored by the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Friends of Theater and Dance (FOTAD), TheBANK of Edwardsville, Ameren Utilites and the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation in St. Louis—opens its 21st season with a delightful musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s beloved classic, “Treasure Island,” on Saturday, Oct. 23. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. that Saturday in the theater in SIUE’s Katherine Dunham Hall. The first FOTAD season premiered in 1990. Planting spring bulbs before winter
University of Illinois News Service If your spring landscape needs a little brightening, fall is the time to plant some bulbs, said a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator. “ Wi t h a p ro p e r s e l e c t i o n o f bulbs and bulb-like plants, you can have very reliable blooms from February until November, but spring is when bulbs shine the most,” Jeff Rugg said. True bulbs, like daffodil, lily, tulip and onion are composed of modified leaves. Cutting a true bulb in half vertically will reveal an entire miniature plant. Next year's leaves, roots, stem and flowers are surrounded by the leaves of the bulb, which stores all of the food necessary for growth. A corm is modified stem tissue that is used to store food. Crocus, gladiolus, and freesias a l l g ro w f ro m c o r m s . T h e t o p o f t h e c o r m h a s t i n y g ro w i n g points called eyes that develop into leaves, stems, and flowers. A tuber is another type of underground stem used for food storage. Anemone, gloriosa lily, r a n u n c u l u s , a n d p o t a t o g ro w from tubers. Tubers also have eyes t h a t g ro w i n t o a l l o f t h e adult plant’s parts. Most spring bulbs prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Plant daffodils and
A little work now will mean a lot of blooms in the spring crocuses in light tree shade. While grape hyacinths prosper in heavy shade, most bulbs will not be able to store enough food to flower well in such conditions. In these cases, you may need to replant every few years for the best blooms. “Good drainage is a must— the bulbs will rot and be unable t o b l o o m i f t h e g ro u n d s t a y s soggy,” Rugg added. Large beds of solid colors or companion plantings of bulbs, perennials, and evergreen ground covers look much better than planting a few stragglers. When buying bulbs, plan to plant them in groups of about 30. S m a l l b u l b s , s u c h a s c ro c u s or trout lily, naturalize well in the lawn as long as you wait to mow until the foliage turns brown. The bulbs can then store enough energy to grow another year. “Unfortunately, most people will mow the lawn before the bulbs are able to store enough energy for the following year,” Rugg said. Most bulbs are best planted two to three times deeper than the size of the bulb. Large bulbs should be planted about eight inches deep and small ones
three to five inches deep. The pointed end of the bulb should face upwards. Space large bulbs six inches apart and small bulbs three inches apart. Multiple bulbs can be planted into the same hole. Plant the lower bulbs first and add a thin layer of soil before planting smaller bulbs over the top. “ Tr y n o t t o p l a n t t h e u p p e r layer of bulbs directly over the lower bulbs,” Rugg said. “Plant them so they will grow between e a c h o t h e r. D o n o t p l a n t t o o many bulbs in the same hole or they will become too crowded when they begin to grow. Before planting, the soil should be amended with bone meal or bulb fertil¬izer and loosened about three inches below the bulb planting depth so the roots can grow into good loose soil. Cover the bed with three inches of mulch or compost and water thoroughly. Keep the bed moist until the g ro u n d f re e z e s . I f i t i s a d r y or warm winter, more watering
may be required. In parts of the United States that do not get three full m o n t h s o f f r e e z i n g w e a t h e r, the bulbs will not be able to break through their dormancy. Some southern nurseries store bulbs in a refrigerator for three months to meet their cold dormancy needs. These bulbs will bloom early and should be treated as annuals because they will not bloom again if left in the ground. “ Yo u w i l l w a n t t o p l a n t t h e bulbs as early as you can in the fall, so they have the most time to grow roots before the ground f r e e z e s , ” h e s a i d . “ H o w e v e r, they should not be planted until after the ground cools to about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This usually occurs after the first killing frost, so use that date as a reminder to plant them soon after that. “If you forget to plant the bulbs at the right time, you can still plant them even if the ground is frozen. The bulbs
will not put out roots in the fall like they should, but they will still get their cold dormancy period.” Yo u c a n a l s o p l a c e t h e forgotten bulbs in flower pots filled with potting soil. Cover the bulbs to just over the top of the bulb and put the pot in a plastic bag. Then place the p o t i n t h e re f r i g e r a t o r. W h e n the bulbs begin to sprout, take off the plastic bag, but do not forget to keep the soil damp. “Refrigerators dry out the s o i l q u i c k l y, s o k e e p a n e y e on the pot,” Rugg said. “After three months in the refrigerator, bring the plants out to a sunny windowsill to grow. They can be planted in the ground as soon as the weather warms up, but if they do not get a full season o f l e a f g ro w t h , t h e y p ro b a b l y won’t bloom for a year or two. “Potted spring bulbs can be planted in the ground and, after three months of cold weather, be brought indoors where they will bloom.”

Going green with the green
By LAURA JOFRE Associated Press In the beginning, I said of our lawn: “as long as it’s green.” That approach, it turns out, is like saying of your children, “as long as they’re kids,” then sitting back and hoping for the best. My lawn is now a wreck of weeds and brown patches, littered with nutshells from the squirrels, who can tell this is the sort of lawn where anything goes. Who knew a simple, postagestamp-size lawn would be so problematic? I had been keen to putter in my first lawn, thinking that gardening was relaxing, assuming that grass would just grow. My husband bought a small push mower and a bag of rye seed. Soon we had a sparse and bashful lawn. Little did I know what was in store. The trend in so many home projects these days — from growing vegetables to hanging out the laundry — is toward doing it yourself, going green, simplifying. But anyone who wants to take that approach to lawn care had better be ready for research and hard work. The lawn turns out to be a humbling, non-relaxing, neverending project served by a conflicting mess of information, intentions, guilt and crazy internal accounting. It’s not so easy to decide: • Do you do it yourself, or go with a pro? That first summer, it became clear that most of our neighbors employed professionals, who careened around on noisy, air clogging, gas-guzzling power mowers and planted ominous yellow flags warning of herbicide use. Surely, I reasoned, lawn maintenance was not so difficult or important that we couldn’t care for our little lawn without poisoning the entire neighborhood. Mowing was easy. Prioritizing
mowing time was harder, and I failed to acknowledge that if the lawn was to be green, it also would need some reseeding and maybe even fertilizing. By the next summer, our fragile lawn was sprouting crabgrass and harboring grubs. I took myself down a peg and ... hired a gardener. • Can you be ecological AND effective? For a few years, our greenish yard was ecologically sound, though it lacked the professional sheen of the neighboring lawns. The gardener, who was more of a mower and selfproclaimed non-expert, suspected my no-toxins rule was to blame. In my next lawn-maintenance failure, I consulted the Internet instead of an expert, with predictably inconclusive results: Lawn products are safe or they’re toxic; the “organic” label is trustworthy or it’s misleading; the dog will be fine or get sick. There were some inexpensive, innocuous solutions for weeds, like vinegar or lemon juice; wouldn’t it be virtuous to use those? Even better, use them myself and renew my efforts with the push mower? I let the gardener go. Here’s the problem: Virtue is time consuming and labor intensive. We kept weeding by hand, if we were going to be outside anyway, watching the kids or cooking hamburgers. It was not enough. The crabgrass unfurled its tentacles and sneered, “Try to love this environment, you weak tree hugger!” I did try. Maybe its bad rap was undeserved; after all, crabgrass was green, and grew well all summer. A mid-Atlantic crabgrass lawn would be a perfect solution, as sensible as a Southwest cactus garden. On the subject of chemical lawn products, the Internet offered myriad conflicting stories.

Village Bistro co-owners Frank Schmidt, left, and Ken Gulledge stand in front of Maryville’s newest restaurant.
Living up to its name Village Bistro now open in Maryville By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge Ken Gulledge and Frank Schmidt want you to do more than just eat at the Village Bistro, they want you to experience it, too. The co-owners of Maryville’s newest restaurant, located at 2922 North Center St. (Route 159), have been busy these last several months turning their dream into a reality. The Village Bistro conducted a soft opening just over three weeks ago. Schmidt has always wanted to be a restaurateur and when he found out Gulledge, who had spent the last 14 years working for Express Scripts, was looking for a new challenge, the two quickly became partners. After settling on a location in one of Maryville’s new strip malls, Schmidt called on a friend, Eric Gates, to help with the food. “Frank has been associated with a young man named Eric Gates, he’s a chef, he’s going to culinary school," Gulledge said. “He has some unique ideas on some dishes to make our menu a little different than your standard menu.” With so many restaurants trying to stand out, Gulledge and Schmidt knew they had to do something to rise above the crowd. Gates responded. “We had a tasting over at my house with all these unique things like the pork with pineapple chutney, the cabernet steak sauce,” Gulledge said. “We had about 20 people come over and had people taste these entrees and

get their feedback. We actually gave out survey cards and they gave us their comments. We tweaked a few things.” Still, that wasn’t enough. Schmidt said the staff and its creations are intended to be a cut above the rest. “When you get down to it, everyplace around here hires a few cooks. We have a professional cooking staff,” Schmidt said. And that staff actually cooks as nothing at the Village Bistro comes pre-packaged. “Other places buy frozen, pre-made appetizers. We don’t do that. We make everything from scratch. Our chicken strips don’t come frozen. They come as chicken which we cut, bread, fry,” Schmidt said. “We’re going to go the extra step as far as labor to make it a special experience for everyone to have. We can do it a little bit cheaper because the ingredients are actually cheaper than the pre-made stuff so even though we’re spending on the labor, we still have pretty moderate prices.” And, going one step further, Gulledge and Schmidt made it a point to educate their servers, who can describe the cilantro-lime Aioli dipping sauce and recommend the best wine pairing for a steak dinner. “It’s not enough to have this good stuff and sit it on the table,” Gulledge said. “When people come in, they’re going to see something they haven’t seen before. So every person in here is capable of pointing them in the right direction.” The owners also wanted a Maryville stamp on the restaurant.
So they worked with the village’s historical museum to have photos of Maryville reproduced. Those photos now hang on the restaurant’s walls. The Village Bistro wants to be Maryville’s bistro, hence the name. “It says what we want to be – being part of the town and respecting what it’s done,” Gulledge said. “We think Maryville is a great location. We’ve been well received so far.” The Village Bistro, which has almost 35 employees, is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. There is a full bar offering 17 different wine choices and almost 60 different brands of beer, including nine on tap. The restaurant offers more than a dozen different appetizer and salad choices. There are 16 different sandwiches, not to mention the burgers, and just some of the dinner choices include pistachio encrusted chicken, pork tenderloin with cucumber salsa, smothered steak and sashimi tuna steak. There’s also a children’s menu and a choice of desserts. Takeout is available. The Village Bistro is off to a smooth start, but Gulledge knows there’s still a lot of work to be done before the restaurant can become the experience he envisions. “We’re very committed to making this a success,” he said. “We want to make this the best place in the area to go for casual dining.” For more information, contact the Village Bistro at 288-0300.

It doesn’t end with altered salmon WASHINGTON (AP) — We’ve always played with our food — even before we knew about genes or how to change them. For thousands of years, humans have practiced selective breeding — pairing the beefiest bull with the healthiest heifers to start a new herd. That concept was refined to develop plant hybridization and artificial insemination. Today we’ve got tastier corn on sturdier stalks, bigger turkeys and meatier cattle. Now comes an Atlantic salmon that is genetically engineered to grow twice as fast as a regular salmon. If U.S. regulators approve it, the fish would be the first such scientifically altered animal to reach the dinner plate. Scientists have already determined that it’s safe to eat. They are weighing other factors,
including environmental risks, after two days of intense hearings. Whatever the decision on salmon, it’s only the start of things to come. In labs and on experimental farms are: — Va c c i n e s a n d o t h e r pharmaceuticals grown in bananas and other plants. — Trademarked “Enviropigs” whose manure doesn’t pollute as much. — Cows that don’t produce methane in their flatulence. And in the far-off future, there may be foods built from scratch — the scratch being DNA. Sometimes when science tinkers with food, it works. Decades ago, Norman Borlaug’s “Green Revolution” of scientifically precise hybrids led to bigger crop yields that have dramatically reduced hunger.

“Glee” star to perform with SLSO By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Ask anyone what the hottest show on TV is right now. The majority will give the answer “Glee” and they would be right. Viewers of every age range are tuning in for the musical comedydrama series and are loving it. One of the newest cast members of the show is Idina Menzel. It was revealed at the end of the last season that she was the biological mother to Lea Michele “Rachel,” who genuinely bears a striking resemblance to Menzel, and is the rival group “Vocal Adrenaline’s” coach. Both Menzel and Michele have similar voice styles and have been heard on the show in both duo and individual singing spots. “Glee” may not be the first place that viewers recognize Menzel as she is also well known for many o t h e r ro l e s a n d a p p e a r a n c e s , in television, film and on the Broadway stage. In film, Idina appeared opposite Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams in Disney’s hit, “Enchanted,” directed by Kevin Lima. Prior to that, Idina was seen in director Chris Columbus’ film version of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical “Rent,” in which she reprised her role as Maureen. This was on the heels of her co-starring role in Robert Towne’s “Ask the Dust,” opposite Salma Hayek and Colin Farrell. In television, Idina recently completed an arc on the “Grey’s Anatomy” hit spin-off, “Private Practice” on ABC. QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“Howl”
Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s film is reverent enough about Allen Ginsberg that it doesn’t dare try to bring him to life. “Howl” is mostly a docudrama, recreating Ginsberg’s first public reading of the great poem in 1955 San Francisco and the famous trial two years later in which his poetry was alleged to be obscene. James Franco plays Ginsberg, in both the reading scene and in recreated interviews interspersed throughout the film. He does well enough with the poet’s halting intonation and glint of mischief, but there’s no fleshed out role for him here. The courtroom scenes are the film’s best mainly because they supply some drama and are populated almost exclusively by fine actors: Jon Hamm, David Strathairn, Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker and Bob Balaban among them. As a love letter to “Howl,” the movie cannot be denied. The language is soaked into the film and lines like “I’m with you in Rockland!” reverberate. But “Howl” is far too emotionless. One hungers for a better, more ambitious movie about the Beats, whom Ginsberg describes in the film as “just a bunch of guys, trying to get published.” RATED: Not rated. RUNNING TIME: 84 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Waiting for ’Superman”
Davis Guggenheim puts a human face on an unwieldy, seemingly unsolvable problem — the wretched state of America’s public schools — in his latest documentary. The director of the Academy Award-winning “An Inconvenient Truth” naturally has plenty of statistics to back up his points: state-by-state deficiency levels in math and reading, the cost of incarcerating a prisoner vs. sending a kid to 12 years of private school, the number of bad teachers who lose their jobs each year (it’s low, given the protections they enjoy under tenure). All staggering stuff — especially depressing if you’re the parent of a young child. But Guggenheim offers some glimmers of hope in the alternative and charter schools cropping up across the country, and in the educators who dare to take a fresh approach. There’s also suspense and heartbreaking human drama as he follows five kids — four of whom live in impoverished areas — waiting to find out whether they’ve won the lottery to nab a rare opening in these types of institutions. He tortures the “Superman”

metaphor, but he does know how to take a potentially dry topic and make it cinematic. RATED: PG for some thematic material, mild language and incidental smoking. RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”
Oliver Stone was making a statement on the glibly moneyhungry times when his “Wall Street” came out in 1987 and, with it, the iconic figure of Gordon Gekko declaring that greed, for lack of a better word, was good. Twenty-three years later, greed is still getting a lot of people into a lot of trouble. The entire country, in fact. And so Stone’s latest is the rare sequel that not only feels relevant but necessary. Of course, his hindsight is 20/20. But here, Stone takes the economic collapse of 2008 and places Gekko — played masterfully by Michael Douglas, returning to the role that earned him an Academy Award — in the middle of it. Having been released from federal prison after serving time for securities fraud, money laundering and racketeering, Gekko is now free to swim among even more dangerous sharks than he ever dreamed of being himself. How will he react? That story line alone could have provided the basis for one meaty, worthwhile movie. “Money Never Sleeps” also crams in a father-daughter story, a few different mentor-protege stories and a romance. It’s big and loud and brash in an almost operatic way. For a movie about a depressing topic that we’re all-too familiar with, “Money Never Sleeps” is surprisingly entertaining. Shia LaBeouf costars, with Frank Langella and Josh Brolin among the strong supporting cast. RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language and thematic elements. RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“You Again”
Really, the women of “You Again” should just get over it. They should move on from the resentments, jealousies and grudges they’ve held onto since high school and embrace the people they’ve become today — even if what they’ve developed into are stock characters in a lame, PG-rated comedy. Instead, they try and tear each other apart in the most crass, slapsticky manner possible. Sure, it’s only a
movie, and so any sense of indignation in watching it is probably misplaced. But “You Again” unfortunately perpetuates all the worst cliches about women being insecure, petty, spiteful, competitive and cruel, and it does it in the name of comedy — which is a problem, because it’s pretty much never funny. What’s truly disheartening: It was written by a woman, Moe Jelline, with her first produced screenplay. Kristen Bell stars as a former nerd whose older brother is marrying the mean girl (Odette Yustman) who tormented her in high school. Coincidentally, Bell’s mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Yustman’s aunt (Sigourney Weaver) are former high school best friends who had an ugly falling out over 30 years ago. Director Andy Fickman (“She’s the Man”) telegraphs his jokes and sight gags from a mile away; later, his characters have well-timed epiphanies and changes of heart. RATED: PG for brief mild language and rude behavior. RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger”
Woody Allen is once again gleefully messing with his ridiculous characters’ lives, but there isn’t much joy for anyone watching. Sure, there are some laughs to be had here and there at the sheer absurdity of it all. But mostly these people feel shallow, and it’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for their foibles. They’re just like us, Allen seems to be saying — except they’re less interesting. Not that it matters all that much. This is a very minor entry in the writer-director ’s prodigious canon, despite the majorleague cast: Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas. But it’s a couple of supporting players who make the greatest impression: Freida Pinto and Lucy Punch, who represent opposite ends on the spectrum of female desirability. And desire is what “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” is all about. These people all want something or someone that’s different — or as they perceive it, better — than what they have, whether it’s a job, an apartment or a new love. Set in London like Allen’s recent “Match Point,” “Scoop” and “Cassandra’s Dream,” “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” similarly features the intertwined lives of the rich and the far less privileged who covet such wealth. RATED: R for some language. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

Movies “Easy A” earns high marks By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The movies are getting faster. This fall, the dialogue seems to be speeding up to an instant messaging pace. Like another websavvy, hyper-verbal movie out soon — “The Social Network” — “Easy A” has some of the wordy whipsmarts of “His Girl Friday,” though its inspiration is much more John Hughes with a dash of Nathaniel Hawthorne. High school teenager Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) is beautiful, sarcastic and witty. She breezes through phrases like “terminal illogical inexactitude” (falsehoods that travel quickly), makes elaborate Google Earth metaphors and does it all without arrogance or even an upturned eyebrow. She is, in short, way out of any teenage boy’s league. “Easy A” begins with her speaking directly into the camera — her computer’s webcam — explaining that “the rumors of my promiscuity have been greatly exaggerated.” Introducing her story, she declares herself a reliable narrator “of sound mind and average breast size.” This narration continues sporadically throughout “Easy A,” but we only in the end find out its reason. In between, Olive accidentally develops a reputation as an “easy” girl after — to satiate her badgering best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) — she lies about losing her virginity. The rumor, spread by the school’s resident religious zealot Marianne (Amanda Bynes, playing the blond type usually made a cheerleader in such movies), moves at the
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Screen Gems, Emma Stone stars as Olive Penderghast in a scene from, “Easy A.” speed of Twitter. Olive doesn’t especially mind that her reputation is soiled since she was previously anonymous. She even embraces the role, sacrificing her rep for the sins of her classmates’ sexual anxieties. Unlike most any high-schooler, Olive doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her. To help a gay friend fend off his heterosexual bullies, she pretends to have sex with him. Other suitors
soon come calling, too, like a portly kid looking for an image boost. It quickly gets out of hand and even her friends turn on her. Still undaunted, Olive dresses more provocatively (like a young, similarly chaste Britney Spears) and pins a red “A” to her outfit. The reference, of course, is Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter,” which she’s reading in a class taught by the school’s coolest teacher (Thomas Haden Church, in perfect casting).
Narrating, Olive recommends “the original” film version, not “the Demi Moore one” where she takes “a bunch of baths.” “Easy A” cleverly inverts Hawthorne’s tale: Virginity is never lost, but in the age of Facebook (which, incidentally, Church’s character gives a wonderful rant on), rumor alone is cruel enough. “Whatever happened to chivalry?” wonders Olive, an outcast by then. “Did it only exist in
‘80s movies?” “John Hughes did not direct my life,” she adds. That’s true; Will Gluck did. Gluck — whose previous film was another high school film, 2009’s “Fired Up!” — ably and stylistically transfers Bert V. Royal’s excellent, nimble script. Gluck weaves in modern technology seamlessly. In one sharp running gag, a pop song goes from an annoyance to an obsession to a ring tone.
Bad movies dent fall’s arrival By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I tried my hardest to love You Again, a formulaic comedy with many prize parts, but the overall combination just left me with a goofy little smile on my face and no lasting positive remarks to share with you. Seriously, what’s wrong with movies this fall? It seems like it’s been weeks since anything truly worthwhile has come out. Yo u A g a i n f e a t u r e s m y BFF Kristen Bell (stuck in the Friends Zone, as she insists on being engaged to that loser Dax Shepard) as Marni, a supersuccessful marketing guru whose life is finally firing on all cylinders after a horrendous high school experience left her self-confidence on the floor. She traded in the acne, glasses, and stringy hair for the gorgeous and
October 7, 2010
glossy visage we all know and love from the greatest TV series of the last decade, Veronica Mars, or her breakthrough feature role as (Forgetting) Sarah Marshall. Marni’s great progress encounters a major roadblock when she returns to the family h o m e f o r h e r o l d e r b ro t h e r ’ s w e d d i n g . Wi l l ( J i m m y Wo l k ) is an awesome big brother. He loves his siblings and used his popularity to shield them from the harshest criticism in high school. The downside is that his fiancé is Joanna (Odette Yustman), the perfect girl who wrecked Marni’s formative years so thoroughly that she still has flashback scars from the bullying and tormenting. Despite her outwardly pleasant bride-to-be goodness, Marni is unconvinced that Joanna--who claims not to e v e n re m e m b e r M a r n i - - i s a l l peaches and cream.
The new girl does have the family snowballed, but the movie takes on another layer when Marni’s mom (Jamie Lee C u r t i s ) re a l i z e s t h a t J o a n n a ’ s a u n t ( S i g o u r n e y We a v e r ) i s her own high school nemesis. Can two generations of hotties catfight their way through, relying only on PG humor? Kind of. But you can even extrapolate that concept out another level when you consider the Grandma Bunny Factor. 88 year-old Betty White, the hottest commodity in Hollywood over the last eighteen months, plays Marni and Will’s grandmother, gets the best lines, and even has her own archrival show up during the wedding rehearsal dinner. I won’t ruin the cameo by telling you who it is, other than to say her bio boasts the most performance Emmy wins of any actress. This trivial factoid aside, the movie
was kind of a dud. You Again runs 105 minutes and is rated PG for brief mild language and rude behavior. I give this film one star out of four. ••• I stumbled onto a movie I ’ d n e v e r e v e n h e a rd o f o n a recent trip out of state. With no pretense or expectations to misdeliver upon, I bought a t i c k e t a n d w a n d e re d i n . T h e Virginity Hit will certainly not be a hit; I was the only person in attendance for an evening show. What I discovered over ninety raunch-filled, embarrassing, and cringe-inducing minutes was a documentary-style stinker p ro d u c e d b y Wi l l F e r re l l a n d Adam McKay about a trio of buddies who follow around their friend Matt (Matt Bennett), filming his attempt to lose his v i rg i n i t y d u r i n g t h e s u m m e r of his second anniversary
with girlfriend Nicole (Nicole Weaver). The movie is full of hyper sexualized kids doing unsavory things and using the unfortunate blend of bad language, free-flowing alcohol, and modern technology that cause so many problems in the American school system these days. A bad reputation seems to be the goal and, thankfully, it takes no time to earn, forever to get rid of, and makes the stars of this picture--a comedy team that uses the moniker Superzack1000--something of YouTube celebrities. I wish a sense of shame came standard, too. T h e Vi r g i n i t y H i t r u n s 9 5 minutes and is rated R for strong crude and sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, drug and alcohol use. I give this film 1/2 of a star out of four.

Movies Reynolds goes underground for "Buried" TORONTO (AP) — After spe n d i n g a n e n t i re f i l m s h o o t i n a b o x , Ry a n R e y n o l d s w a s overjoyed to go off and play a comic-book hero. Reynolds was tucked in a coffin on set for two and a half weeks on the one-man show “Buried,” a thriller opening Friday in which he plays a contract driver in Iraq who has been buried alive by terrorists. He went from that shoot into “ G re e n L a n t e r n , ” p l a y i n g t h e title role as the DC Comics test pilot who gains extraterrestrial powers after he receives a mystical ring from a dying alien. On “Buried,” Reynolds could barely move, often stuck inside his box for full days, since getting in and out between scenes was too time consuming. He was claustrophobic, his heart would race and he lost weight from the anxiety and sense of confinement. “There’s just a humility that y o u g a i n f ro m a n e x p e r i e n c e like this,” Reynolds, 33, said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, where “Buried” played. “I just f e l t l i k e I w o u l d n e v e r, e v e r, as long as I live, complain on a film set again after living through ‘Buried.’ “I’m not a fan of actors overly romanticizing their process, because it’s generally just selfaggrandizement for the most part. But it was tough, ‘Buried’ w a s r e a l l y, r e a l l y t o u g h , e m o t i o n a l l y a n d p h y s i c a l l y. I left there changed. And then to go on a great wide open set like ‘Green Lantern,’ run around for six or seven months playing a superhero was pretty great.” Reynolds got his start on
t e l e v i s i o n i n t h e 1 9 9 0 s b e f o re breaking out with a starring role in the 2002 campus comedy “Van Wilder.” He landed a role in the comic-book adaptation “Blade: Trinity,” starred in the horror remake “The Amityville H o r ro r ” a n d c o s t a r re d i n t h e crime thriller “Smokin’ Aces.” His career has defied categorization as Reynolds moved from action to comedy to romance with such love stories as “Definitely, Maybe” and last year ’s Sandra Bullock hit “The Proposal.” Reynolds also took on a role in last year ’s Marvel Comics s u p e r h e r o a d v e n t u re “ X - M e n O r i g i n s : Wo l v e r i n e . ” T h o u g h it was a small part, he got to play the mutant mercenary Deadpool, a comic-book character he particularly loved growing up. “It was one of those situations where it may not have been the most ideal situation for that character, but I’ll be damned if someone else was going to play it,” said Reynolds, who hopes a script in development for a “Deadpool” spinoff will come to pass. That could put Reynolds in a rare position in Hollywood,
where more and more actors sign on for superhero franchises. If things go his way, Reynolds would have two. “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. I don’t have two superhero franchises,” Reynolds said. “If the pieces f i t t o g e t h e r i n t h e r i g h t w a y, then I’m there. It’s certainly something I’m passionate about, because I’ve known it for so long, and I know the mythology so well. It’s a great character. He’s a true anti-hero, and that’s why I like him.” Reynolds’ character in “Buried” is anything but a superhero. He plays an ordinary guy who wakes up in a nightmare situation, stuck underground with a dying cell phone, running up against a cold and distant bureaucracy as he desperately calls for help. “I loved some of the themes of it. I mean, this hidden enemy being bureaucracy. Not terrorists and not a coffin and n o t a l i m i t e d o x y g e n s u p p l y, but bureaucracy’s going to kill this guy,” Reynolds said. “This guy is calling everybody he can to get some help, and he’s being asked ridiculous questions like his Social Security number, and

people don’t really necessarily believe him. They don’t say it so much as you just hear it in the tone of their voice.” Reynolds is shooting the romantic comedy “The Change-Up” this fall. And with “Green Lantern,” he’ll be part of Hollywood’s superhero summer next year, playing an adventurer he describes as “Han Solo crossed with Chuck Yeager.” Given all the dark, brooding superheroes running around on
screen, Reynolds hopes “Green Lantern” can lighten things up a bit. “It’s a real classic kind of guy. I t ’ s t h e g u y w h o c a n t h ro w a punch, kiss the girl and tell a joke. That’s something I’d love t o s e e o n s c re e n a g a i n , a n d I hoped it’s embraced for that kind of spirit,” Reynolds said. “ Yo u c a n ’ t b e i n t e r m i t t e n t l y clenching your jaw muscles in place of emotion. You’ve got to be having a little fun with it, too.”

Travel Travel briefs Yoko Ono installation seeks healing amid violence BERLIN (AP) — At the center of Yoko Ono’s new installation is a perfectly round bullet hole shot through a large pane of glass that John Lennon’s widow says challenges viewers to confront “incredible violence and abuse” in the world today. Titled “Das Gift” — a play on the word’s meaning in English, a present, and German, poison — the exhibit opened in Berlin Friday. The 77-year-old artist told The Associated Press she hoped it would force viewers to confront violence without losing hope. “I want all of us to understand what is going on in the world now, which is incredible violence and abuse,” Ono said. “Instead of just putting that reality under the rug and just forget about it, we have to face it.” The centerpiece of the installation is called simply “The Hole,” the oversized bullet hole in the window that Ono said she made with the idea of the violence that takes place daily around the world. “There are many, many holes in many, many windows in our world. And I was thinking about that,” Ono said. But it then took on a larger, more personal meaning as a tribute to her late husband, slain outside their New York City home 30 years ago in December. “When I made it, I though, ah, I remember,” Ono said. In addition, the installation features seven overcoats that were worn by people who were shot at point-blank range, and a wall where viewers’ shadows are projected and intermingle. There is also a series of German army helmets suspended from the ceiling and filled with pale-blue puzzle pieces — pieces of “sky” that viewers can take home with them. In an upstairs room, people are invited to smile into a computer fitted with camera, allowing their happy images to be added hundreds of others that Ono has collected in a database — some of which are flashed onto an adjacent wall. Ono said she wanted to show the installation in Berlin, where it runs at the Haunch of Venison gallery until Nov. 13, because the city’s turbulent history paralleled the turmoil that touched her own life. “I felt all the time that I was making this that people in Berlin would understand me,” Ono said. She said her ultimate aim is to spread a message of hope and peace. “There’s a dream of hope, and I think that this century that just started now, started very badly, but it is going to be very beautiful,” Ono said.

Chicago building plans sky-high ice skating CHICAGO (AP) — Ice skating in Chicago in January is nothing new. Doing it on the 94th floor of a downtown skyscraper certainly is. Officials at the 100-story John Hancock Center said Thursday that they’re installing a rink that will allow visitors to skate at 1,000 feet up in the air. About 20 people at a time will be able to skate on the 1,000-square foot rink. It will be open from January through March. The rink actually won’t be made of ice. It will be made of a synthetic material that creates a hard, plastic floor with a slick silicone glaze. It’s an attempt to attract more visitors to the building during a normally slow time of year. deaths decreased in the early 1980s and early 1990s when difficult economic conditions led many drivers to cut back on discretionary travel. Last year’s reduction in fatalities came even as the estimated number of miles traveled by motorists in 2009 increased 0.2 percent over 2008 levels.
Barbara Harsha, executive director for the Governors Highway Safety Association, said the new data was “particularly encouraging given that estimated vehicle miles traveled actually increased slightly in 2009, thus exposing the public to greater risk on our roadways.” LaHood said the weak economy
was a contributing factor as many Americans chose not to go out to bars and restaurants after work or on the weekend. But he said many motorists are more safety conscious behind the wheel. About 85 percent of Americans wear seat belts while benefiting from safety advances found in today’s cars and trucks.
U.S. highway deaths fall to lowest level since 1950 WASHINGTON (AP) — Traffic deaths have plummeted across the United States to levels not seen in more than a half century, spurred b y t e c h n o l o g y, m o r e s a f e t y conscious drivers and tougher enforcement of drunken driving laws. The Transportation Department said Thursday that traffic deaths fell 9.7 percent in 2009 to 33,808, the lowest number since 1950. In 2008, an estimated 37,423 people died on the highways. Government and auto safety experts attributed the improvement t o m o re p e o p l e b u c k l i n g u p , side air bags and anti-rollover technology in more vehicles and a focus in many states on curbing drinking and driving. Economic conditions were also a factor. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called the new data “a landmark achievement for public health and safety” but cautioned that too many people are killed on the road each year. “While we’ve come a long way,” he said, “we have a long distance yet to travel.” Forty-one states, the federal enclave of Washington and Puerto Rico saw reductions in highway fatalities, led by Florida with 422 fewer deaths and Texas, down 405. The rate of deaths per 100 million miles (160 million kilometers) traveled also dropped to a record low. It fell to 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles in 2009, compared with 1.26 the year before. Year-to-year declines in highway deaths have occurred in previous economic downturns, when fewer people are out on the road. Traffic

Iowa Catholic leaders back constitutional convention as quickest way to undo marriage ruling DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Roman Catholic leaders in Iowa are urging voters to back a constitutional convention, saying the rare gathering would be the quickest way to overturn the court ruling that legalized gay marriage in the state. The Iowa Catholic Conference, which represents the state’s four Roman Catholic dioceses, issued the statement Monday in favor of a yes vote on a Nov. 2 ballot question that would require a constitutional convention. Gay marriage has been legal in Iowa since 2009, when the state Supreme Court affirmed a lower court decision that found a samesex marriage ban approved by lawmakers violated the Iowa Constitution. Since then, about 1,800 same-sex weddings have been held in Iowa, most by couples who live in other states. Tom Chapman, executive director of the Catholic Conference, said the group was part of a larger effort to encourage Iowa’s roughly 500,000 Catholics to vote their conscience on
a number of issues. Vo t e r s l a s t c a l l e d f o r a constitutional convention in 1920, but it wasn’t convened, according to Rich Johnson, the legal director for the Legislative Services Agency. He didn’t know why. In such a convention, the Legislature would set a process to select delegates and voters would have to approve any changes delegates propose. Separately, Minnesota’s Catholic bishops are launching a new effort against same-sex marriage, with a DVD being mailed to parishioners. Winona Bishop John Quinn said the DVD explains church teaching on marriage and describes what church leaders consider the potential impact of allowing same-sex marriage in Minnesota.
N.Y. town tells Muslim community to remove corpses SIDNEY CENTER, N.Y. (AP) — Members of a small Muslim community in rural upstate New York say the uproar over a planned mosque near ground zero is behind attempts by local officials to shut down the community’s graveyard and remove the two bodies buried there. Hans Hass of the Osmanli Naksibendi Hakkani community, 130 miles northwest of Manhattan, says
Tuesday that anti-Islamic bigotry motivated the Sidney Town Board’s August vote to pursue legal action to shut down the Sufi community’s cemetery. Town Supervisor Bob McCarthy says the cemetery is illegal and bigotry has nothing to do with it. He says no legal action has been taken yet. Hass has a 2005 document from the town zoning board saying the cemetery is legal, as well as burial permits.
Oregon judge says toddler can live with faith-healing parents; must continue treatment OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) — A judge says a baby girl taken from her parents because of an untreated medical condition can return home to live, with her treatment monitored by the Oregon Department of Human Services. Clackamas County Circuit Judge Douglas Van Dyk imposed several conditions last Friday on the parents, Timothy and Rebecca Wyland, who belong to a faith-healing church. They must give 9-month-old Alayna the medicine prescribed for a serious eye condition and continue treatment as directed by doctors. The couple agreed.
