Wineries a hit with local connoisseurs Edwardsville area carves out its own niche By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge There is no need to drive for hours if you want to enjoy a nice glass of wine and the chance to relax with friends. There are some great opportunities to taste the best that Illinois wines offer within a 30 minute drive. One of the newest wineries in the area is Villa Marie Winery, located at 6633 East Main St., in Maryville. Judy Wiemann turned her beloved family farm into what is now known as Villa Marie Winery.

The project was created to honor the memory of her mother, Mary, and her father John Drost, who served 13 years as the Mayor of Maryville. Not only does Villa Marie claim to marry the perfect wine climate of Illinois with the fabulous grapes of the world to create some of the best local wines, but they also offer an elegant location for a wedding ceremony, reception or banquet. Villa Marie has quickly become a popular spot for friends and families to gather together to

enjoy music, wine, the scenery and relaxation. They offer lunch on Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and an appetizer selection on Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cheese and crackers are always available for purchase. Some of the signature wines available under the Villa Marie label are “Fuzzy Fuzion” a sweet white wine with hints of peaches, pineapple and mango. It’s fresh and crisp sure to become your favorite sipping wine. “Pleasant Ridge,” is a dark blue/black wine made with Corot Noir grapes grown in the Villa Marie Vineyard. Visit their Web site at www. thevillamariewinery.com for more information and their live music schedule. In 2007, Wiemann added to her winery business by acquiring Piasa Winery, located at 211 West Main St. in Grafton. The Piasa Winery offers a selection of award winning and signature wines that come from the fruit of the Piasa Vineyards. Piasa Winery also carries more than 400 varieties of Illinois and international wines and more than 100 imported and domestic beers. They invite guests to come sit on the deck, maybe enjoy some live music or just enjoy the natural surroundings at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Fore more information about the Piasa Winery, visit www. piasawinery.com. Springer’s Creek Winery is definitely a hop, skip and jump away, located at 817 Hillsboro Ave., in Edwardsville, just five blocks from old-town Edwardsville’s Main Street. Their tasting room was built in an original Route 66 store front and

offers two levels of seating. The atmosphere is both eclectic and cozy. A renovated 1800s home that they refer to as their Lincoln House seats 40 people for parties and meetings. Their hours are Thursdays: noon to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays: noon to 10 p.m.; and Sundays: noon to 7 p.m. Springer’s wine menu features: Lincoln Head – dry red, Riverland – dry white, Harvest Moon – semisweet white, Mother Road Red – sweet red, Route 66 – semi-sweet blush, and more. They offer live music Thursdays through Sundays. Visit their Web site at www.springerscreekwinery. com for times for live music and for more information about the winery. Villa Marie Winery and Springer’s Creek are going to be hosts to the ArtEast tour on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. Stop by during those dates to view the artists’ work that will be exhibited at those locations. For more information about ArtEast, visit www.arteasttour. com.

Located in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Crown Valley is a true destination for enjoying the best Missouri has to offer. The scenery is second to none, making for the perfect back drop to what has to be titled a first-class operation. The Crown Valley Winery is maybe what is the best known venue in the Crown Country. architectural masterpiece that overlooks the vineyards and the Crown Valley Farm, which is where the farmer ’s market and property gardens are. The vegetables grown in the gardens and greenhouses are used in all the crown properties restaurants and cafe’s and are also made available for sale to visitors. Opened in 2007, it is the first true champagne house in the Midwest. The sparkling wine is made using two fermentation processes, the traditional Champagne method and the Charmat method. Stop by the tasting bar and try the different

buckets of six beers), or a “growler” of your favorite brew which can be brought back for refills at a reduced price. The brewery may be new to the area, but the Brewmaster makes sure that the timeless method of brewing is at its best. Featured are handcrafted beers that include American Blonde Ale, Amber Lager, Porter, Traditional Wheat, Cider, Dubbel and Raspberry Wheat beers. All of the products are produced in the state-of-theart 15 barrel microbrewery. Enjoy tasting, draft selections, bottled beer (including disposable or souvenir

There is a delectable salad selection that also features the fresh produce. If dessert is your thing, try the “Crown Chocolate Selections for Two,” “Choclate Marquise,” or the executive chef ’s specialty cheese cakes, flavored according to the chef’s taste for that day. Charleville caters to many tastes Winery and microbrewery nestled in a rustic location By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge ‘Tis the season at Charleville Vineyard Winery and Microbrewery. Grapes are in season and are being handpicked as you read this. The family oriented business started out as being a plan to just plant, grow and sell premium grapes that only the Missouri soil can produce so well. As time went on, owners Jack and Joal Russell had a change of plans. They drew on inspiration fro the land and family heritage to offer distinctive, hand-crafted wines and microbrews that come from the fruit of their land. Located in the western part of Ste. Genevieve county, Charleville Vineyards offers a tasting room, where you can try a portion of their

wines and microbrews for free, and the rest for a nominal fee. After you choose your favorite,

purchase a glass or a bottle and take a trip to the back porch donned with rocking chairs, bar stools around homemade barrel tables or just a nice lawn chair to enjoy the rolling hills and meadows surrounding the property. It’s a breathtaking view that is sure to keep you coming back for more. Charleville Vineyards is nestled back in the wooded area of Ste. Genevieve county, where their vineyards line the country road that leads to the property. A beautifully refurbished 1860s log cabin adjacent to the tasting room serves as a two-bedroom bed and breakfast for guests on weekends. Be sure to call for a reservation so they can be sure to accommodate you. Guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch or you can purchase a variety of cheeses and sausages from their tasting room. Visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings up close by hiking the trails that run throughout the

property or maybe a relaxing day around the bonfire is more your style. If you are interested in how Charleville produces their many flavors of wines and microbrews, Jack, Joal or other family or friends are always on hand to answer any questions you might have. The tasting room hours are Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 6 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you would like to make a weekend of your visit, the Bruckeroff Cabin Bed and Breakfast is available for Friday and Saturday nights at $115 per night, which includes a full breakfast. Dinner is available at several nearby restaurants along the wine trail as well as in Ste. Genevieve and Farmington. Hidden Lake Winery A treasure in Clinton County By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge A recent trip to Hidden Lake Winery revealed a big surprise when the country road opened up to the hidden treasure that the location really is. A beautiful lake with the rustic, yet classic, winery perched on a small hill above it made a fantastic setting for visitors. Comfortable outdoor chairs abound by the lakeside with fire pits scattered throughout. This makes for a very inviting setting for those coming to try some of the specialty wines and relax. Angie and Dale Holbrook are the owners of the property that houses the Hidden Lake Winery complex. What started out as family trips to Napa and a genuine love for wine, the Holbrooks brought back their love to Clinton County. In 2004, the Holbrooks began to make wine, and on June 1, 2005, they opened their winery to the public. Their goal was to offer a variety of wines that will satisfy many palates while

October 15, 2009

guests enjoy the tranquil setting with friends. The Barrel Room Grill and Steakhouse is the restaurant offering in the complex. The restaurant offers full-service fine dining, with lunch and dinner selections served with views of the serene wooded surroundings. The menu features their signature crabcakes, handmade by their Executive Chef, along with fresh baked breads and the highest-quality steaks served with their house-made herbed butter. Other menu choices consist of Frenched Pork Chop, Bison Kabob and Jamaican Jerk Shrimp. The restaurant not only features Hidden Lake wines, but also a selection of California wines. If you enjoy a fabulous Sunday brunch, then a trip to Aviston should be on your agenda. They offer many breakfast and luncheon items along with tempting desserts and an omelet and Belgian waffle station. If you are looking for a destination for a wedding, anniversary celebration or family reunion, Hidden Lake Winery has a

number of options. For overnight visits, they offer the Silent Forest Retreat Cabins, which includes honeymoon cabins and deluxe cabins. Some even have a heart shaped Jacuzzi and fireplace. Rates are available on their Web site. If you are visiting with your sweetheart, make sure to take a leisurely walk around the “wine trail” that leads briefly through some of the wooded areas, past the party rental gazebo and back to the winery. Hidden Valley Winery is located at 10580 Wellen Road, in Aviston. The winery is open Mondays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to midnight; and Sundays, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Barrel Room hours are: closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, Wednesday through Friday: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (10 p.m. on Fridays); Saturday: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday Brunch: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information about Hidden Lake Winery, visit www. hiddenlakewinery.com or call 618-228-9111 or 888-966-WINE.

Music Tuning in Wash. U. to present “Ragtime” “Ragtime,” Terrence McNally’s acclaimed adaptation of the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, is a sweeping and ambitious tale of race, class and the promise of America at the dawn of the 20th century. It is also a tremendously demanding theatrical production, requiring almost 50 actors and at least a dozen musicians. Indeed, “Ragtime” is so logistically challenging — more than 150 different costumes must be designed and sewn — that it virtually precludes staging by all but the largest of regional theaters. Yet next month, The Black Rep will join forces with Washington University’s Performing Arts D e p a r t m e n t ( PA D ) i n A r t s & Sciences to present this Tony Award-winning musical as the PAD’s fall Mainstage production. Performances will take place in the university’s Edison Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Performances will then continue the next two weekends, at 8 p.m. Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31; and at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Student Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. Tickets are $20, or $15 for Washington University faculty and staff and $10 for children, students and seniors. Tickets are available through the Edison Theatre Box Office, (314) 935-6543, and through all MetroTix outlets. For more information, call (314) 935-6543 or visit padarts.wustl. edu. Set predominantly in New York, Ragtime follows three families — one Jewish immigrant, one

upper-class Protestant and one African-American — as their lives intertwine amidst the era’s social upheavals. At the center of the story is Coalhouse Walker Jr., a successful and easygoing ragtime piano player who turns to violence after a white mob destroys his custom Model T. Mingling with the fictional characters are historical figures from the period, ranging from Henry Ford and Booker T. Washington to Harry Houdini and the anarchist Emma Goldman. “In essence, Ragtime is the story of America,” says director Ron Himes, founder of The Black Rep as well as the Henry E. Hampton Jr. artist-in-residence in the PAD. “It’s the immigrant story and the African-American story and the story of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and all the intersections inbetween. It’s also a story about justice — who gets justice and who doesn’t. In a lot of ways, the issues it raises are still with us today. “Ragtime has a scale and a scope that neither The Black Rep nor the PAD could have accomplished alone,” continues Himes, who also is teaching a seminar titled “Ragtime: From Page to Stage.” “Combining our resources really affords a unique opportunity.” For example, to cast the show, Himes held two separate auditions — one for PAD students, one for young actors associated with the Black Rep — then combined the two groups during callbacks. Meanwhile sets (designed by Black Rep veteran Jim Burwinkel) and costumes (designed by Bonnie Kruger, costume director in the PAD) are being created in both The Black Rep and PAD workshops. “It’s been great watching the groups meld together,” Himes adds. “They’ve really become a unified company. You forget who’s from the university and who’s

from The Black Rep.” Jeffery Mathews, drama program coordinator in the PAD, notes that Ragtime preparations have given students a visceral sense of the frenetic pace of professional theater. “We’ve never done anything quite this enormous before, so we’re working them pretty hard,” Matthews says with a smile. “They’re basically working a semiprofessional schedule, rehearsing 20 hours a week. Students are actually getting additional credit hours because of the demands. But the energy is just extraordinary.” The cast is led by Shaun Hudson as Coalhouse Walker and Janessa Morgan as Sarah, with whom Coalhouse is in love, along with Renae Adams and Jonathan Forsythe as Mother and Father to the upper-class family; Matthew Howard as their Young Boy; and Peter Winfrey as Mother’s Younger Brother. Micah Herstand is Tateh, a Latvian widower who has come to America with his daughter, played on different nights by the sisters

Alessandra and Veronica Silva. Also featured are Malcolm Foley as Booker T. Washington and Carly Schulman as Emma Goldman. Catherine Moreton and Dan Davis play Evelyn Nesbit and Harry Houdini. David Blake is Willie Conklin, the racist fire chief whose men attack Colehouse’s car. Lighting is by Sean Savoie, l e c t u r e r i n t h e PA D . M u s i c direction and choreography are by The Black Rep’s Charles Creath and Millie Garvey, respectively.

Movies

“The Invention of Lying”

It would be such a joy to bend the truth and say that “The Invention of Lying” lives up to the potential of its inspired premise. The conceit — that an alternate universe exists where everyone tells the truth all the time — sets up an uproarious beginning, but then the movie plummets precipitously. It’s not just the high-concept gag wears thin, which it does. The bigger problem is that Ricky Gervais, in his directorial debut (alongside co-director and co-writer Matthew Robinson), zigzags awkwardly between dark humor and heavy melodrama. One character is suicidal and another is on the verge of dying, both of which are played uncomfortably for laughs. It certainly doesn’t help that “The Invention of Lying” is lighted so hideously, everyone looks like death — even Rob Lowe and Tina Fey. This is especially obvious given Gervais’ fondness for cutting back and forth between close-ups his actors, which he does with distracting frequency. On camera himself, he’s likable enough as Mark Bellison, a wisecracking sad sack who discovers the unheard-of notion of lying one day and explores its many benefits. But sharing scenes with him are Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton and Jason Bateman, who go to waste in barely-there cameos. Comedians like Fey, Jeffrey Tambor and Louis C.K. get a bit more time on screen but their characters are flatly one-note. Gervais deserves credit for approaching the idea that God and heaven are part of an elaborate lie meant to assuage the masses — a bold move for a big-studio comedy with lots of stars — but then backs off, as if he and Robinson hadn’t thought it through all the way. RATED:PG-13 for language including some sexual material and a drug reference. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

“More Than a Game”

An inspiring story that works very hard to remind you it’s an inspiring story at every opportunity. “Hoosiers” looks subtle by comparison — and this is a documentary. “More Than a Game” traces the origins of LeBron James before he was an NBA superstar, when he and his high school teammates rose from being scrappy Akron, Ohio, kids to three-time state basketball champions. With his first film, director and co-writer Kristopher Belman combines old home videos and TV news footage with fresh interviews with James, his buddies and their coach, Dru Joyce II. Feel-good speeches and proclamations abound, frequently accompanied by the swell of uplifting music. (“Our kids just had a never-say-die attitude,” recalls the coach, speaking in one of many sports cliches, even though the tears in his eyes at the memories seem genuine.) Too often,

Belman also states the obvious; we could have figured out for ourselves, for example, that Joyce served as a father figure to James, who was raised in the projects by a single mother who gave birth to him at 16. The fact that James’ talent and discipline allowed him not only to overcome his childhood hardships but thrive on a stratospheric scale is a compelling story in itself — and to his credit, he’s not the sole focus of the film, even though he’s an executive producer. “More Than a Game” also takes plenty of time to let us get to know his teammates, their back stories, and how they found a way to work together and win. RATED: PG for brief mild language and incidental smoking. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING:Two stars out of four.

“A Serious Man”

It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what a Coen brothers movie is. That’s part of the allure of them. As writers and directors, brothers Joel and Ethan Coen don’t just pump out the same movie over and over, as so many filmmakers do. From the comic antics of “Raising Arizona” to the noir of “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” the goofballs of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” to the outlaws of “No Country for Old Men,” they’re all strikingly different. They surprise us. But there are some thematic threads that frequently run though them, which get tangled together here in the Coens’ most personal film yet. Basically the point is that the universe is random, it gives you insurmountable challenges, and there’s nothing you can do about it. The concepts of justice and karma are irrelevant: Things happen to people whether their behavior is good or bad, and you can question them all you like, but good luck finding any answers. You could invoke “The Big Lebowski” in trying to explain this philosophy: They’re nihilists. But the Coens are clearly having a little fun in making life so difficult for the nebbishy Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a physics professor raising his family in a predominately Jewish suburb of Minneapolis in 1967. Larry tries to do the right thing at home and at work — tries to be a serious man — but out of nowhere one day, the troubles start piling up until they reach an absurd level. Watching and wondering how and when he’ll snap provides laughs, but also a mounting sense of unease, and it should provoke lengthy debate about the nature of faith. RATED: R for language, some sexuality/nudity and brief violence. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Whip It”

Drew Barrymore has forged a persona as both an actress and producer with movies that exude a playful sense of girl power, so it only makes sense that her first feature as a director would share that same sort of vibe. What is surprising, though, is Barrymore’s ability to find just the right tone all the time, which would be a difficult feat for any first-time filmmaker

to achieve — even one who’s had the benefit of spending her entire life on movie sets. “Whip It” is funny without trying too hard to be wacky, sweet without being overly sentimental. It has an appealing sort of low-budget, ‘70s-style kitsch. And after a recent string of femalecentric films including “All About Steve” and “The Ugly Truth” that wallow in the worst kinds of stereotypes, it is such a relief to see women depicted as strong, smart, cool individuals. It’s also a joy to see Ellen Page play a character other than the impossibly clever smart-alecks she’s become known for in movies like “Juno” and “Hard Candy.” Here, Page stars as Bliss Cavendar, a misfit growing up in the nowhere town of Bodeen, Texas, and working as a waitress at the local barbecue joint. Bliss is reluctantly following in the footsteps of her beauty-queen mother (Marcia Gay Harden), but on a visit to the big city of Austin, she sees a flier for the local roller derby league and is immediately intrigued. Not only does she secretly try out, she makes it and becomes the league’s petite, speedy star. Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Juliette Lewis, stuntwoman Zoe Bell and Barrymore herself are among the solid supporting cast. RATED” PG-13 for sexual content including crude dialogue, language and drug material. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Zombieland”

You’d be justified in thinking you’ve visited “Zombieland” before. There’s been no shortage of zombies at the movies in recent years, just as there’s been no shortage of vampires. And within that genre, a crop of zombie comedies has arisen, from “Shaun of the Dead” to “Zombie Strippers” to “Dead Snow.” Like “Shaun” before it, though, “Zombieland” mostly finds that tricky balance of the laugh-out-loud funny and the makeyou-jump scary, of deadpan laughs and intense energy. It’s a total blast even if the story is a bit thin, and it does run out of steam toward the end, but thankfully our trip to “Zombieland” is appropriately quick. First-time director Ruben Fleischer grabs you from the get-go with stylized visuals, and the script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is hilariously bizarre while still remaining rooted in contemporary reality. Jesse Eisenberg stars as an uber-nerdy college student who’s managed to survive a viral zombie outbreak by adhering to a strict series of rules, which are inspired by his innate fear of everything. While trying to get home to Ohio to see what’s become of his parents, he runs into a fellow survivor (Woody Harrelson) who’s his brash, butt-kicking opposite. They come to regard each other by their destinations — Columbus and Tallahassee — rather than their real names to avoid forging a personal relationship, should potential zombiedom force either of them to take drastic action against the other. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin co-star as Wichita and Little Rock, sisters who join them in hopes of staying alive. RATED: R for horror violence/gore and language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“An Education” one of year’s best By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sixteenyear-old Jenny learns the ways of the world in the coming-of-age drama “An Education,” but there’s a revelation in store for us, as well. We get the pleasure of meeting an exciting young actress who surely deserves to become a star. Carey Mulligan is radiant as a suburban teenager in 1961 London who is curious and clever beyond her years but still rather innocent and impressionable. Although she’s a diligent student and dutiful daughter on track to study at Oxford, she sits alone in her bedroom at night longing to be adult enough to live in Paris on her own, basking in the culture. Mulligan maintains a beautifully believable balance of these contrasting forces, even as Jenny gets drawn from the sedate and boring life she knows into a glamorous new one. Her guide is David (Peter Sarsgaard doing a solid British accent), a thirtysomething man with whom she has a chance meeting one rainy day and experiences an immediate connection. He whisks her away in his flashy sports car to nights filled with concerts and late-night suppers and, eventually, weekend trips out of town. Even her protective parents (Alfred Molina and Cara Seymour), who are initially skeptical of David’s intentions because he’s twice her age, fall for his urbane charms. And we do, too, Sarsgaard is so smooth — even though we should know better. David is funny and attentive, generous and sweet. He takes good care of her and seems genuinely interested in spending time with her, never pressuring her to have sex. And under his tutelage,

In this film publicity image released by Sony Pictures Classics, Carey Mulligan is shown in a scene from, “An Education.” Jenny positively thrives. She was pleasingly cute in her schoolgirl uniforms, but once she begins dressing fashionably, wearing her long hair in a twist and carrying herself with a more sophisticated air, it’s easy to see the gorgeous woman she was always meant to become. (And the details in the production and costume design are all flawless.) Danish director Lone Scherfig and writer Nick Hornby find

just the right touch here with some tricky material, based on the memoir by Lynn Barber. (It’s a rare example of Hornby, author of “High Fidelity” and “About a Boy,” adapting someone else’s work.) The challenge is: How to make David, and this ill-advised relationship, seem thrilling rather than creepy? Through Jenny’s eyes, we get caught up in the excitement, too, but as bystanders we know it can’t last — even before David’s

dark side starts to surface — and that’s what gives “An Education” an inescapable tension. Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike ideally round out David’s clique as the wealthy, worldly Danny and his beautiful but vapid girlfriend, Helen. With the icy, blond looks of a Hitchcock femme fatale and a stylish wardrobe of gowns and furs, Helen may appear perfect but she’s clueless when Jenny drops French phrases here

and there in her speech, and their unlikely friendship provides “An Education” with some comic relief. Olivia Williams and Emma Thompson also function as strong female role models in Jenny’s life, co-starring as her English teacher and the school’s headmistress, respectively. And Sally Hawkins, so lovely in “Happy-Go-Lucky,” has one great scene in which she provides Jenny with a less pleasant sort of education.

“Whip It” will keep you laughing By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge After the back-to-back-to-back 3-D Technicolor fiesta of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “Toy Story,” “and Toy Story 2,” I decided to take things down a notch and catch a movie that wasn’t quite as modern. And, short of a movie describing the Amish religion, what could be less modern than roller derby, skates, and cotillion? Drew Barrymore makes her directorial with the girl power comedy “Whip It.” Based on the novel by Shauna Cross, Whip It is a story about roller derby, the eclectic sport of the 1970s, and the effect it has on one unhappy girl from outside Austin, Texas. Bliss Cavender (Ellen Page) is working her way out of her Podunk town by waitressing her buns off at the local diner and twirling around the beauty pageant circuit with her obsessive mother (Marcia Gay Harden).

“Whip It”

RATED: PG-13 for sexual content, including crude dialogue, language, and drug material. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: two and a half stars out of four. There is no fulfillment for Bliss, though, in this effort and she needs something else to express herself. A chance visit to a roller derby match in an abandoned warehouse gives her something to set her sights on. The members of the women’s derby league are an odd bunch. They come in all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and ages. The one thing they do share is an incredible since of selfconfidence, the primary drawing point for the aimless Bliss. She feels an especially strong pull toward the Hurl Scouts, the

league’s perennial losers who dress like rebel rock stars in merit badge sashes and pleated skirts. They have amazing nicknames like Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), Rosa Sparks (Eve), and Smashley Simpson (Barrymore) and aren’t shy about being tough broads who can take an elbow to the stomach or do a bloody header right into the track. As the untested rookie, Bliss, who goes by the moniker Babe Ruthless, is tested by each and every foul-mouthed Hurl Scout. They take her under a collective wing, especially when she runs afoul of Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), the angry team captain of a rival skate squad. Her coach, Razor (played by Andrew Wilson, Luke’s and Owen’s older brother), thinks she’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. She can skate like the wind and bounces back from injury like a rubber ball. She becomes a league star and then has to reconcile with her distraught parents, including her dad played tenderly

by Daniel Stern, after they realize that she’s been playing roller derby (in a circuit for those 21+) instead of taking a college test prep course. Bliss’s newly-found confidence and since of purpose takes its fair share of knocks, too. The circumstances find her in a relationship with a cute indie rocker boy who eventually turns out to be the same as every other bum who can’t be faithful to a nice girl. Then there’s the cotillion I mentioned earlier. Her mom insists on putting Bliss in beautiful gowns and pearls to participate in contests that judge her poise and speech-making. Needless to say, this does not go over well with her bruises, black eyes, and amazing new attitude. And funny? There are plenty of zinging one-liners in this movie, mostly from league’s emcee (Jimmy Fallon, husband of producer Nancy Juvonen and good friend of Barrymore), that stick with you. I still find myself laughing two days later.

The Screamatorium Haunted House is located at 1703 N. Belt west in Belleville, which is the location of the old Bel-Air bowling alley. Legend states that the old bowling alley is actually haunted by a former customer who choked to death while eating in the restaraunt downstairs. The haunted house is open from 6- midnight and open every Friday and Saturday through Oct. 31. Other week dates will be Oct. 8,11,28, and 29. The Screamatorium recommends that customers be at least age 10. This is the second year for the Haunted house which is now longer and on average will take about 25 minutes to go through. This is the first haunted house in the metro-east to rival the large scale st.Louis haunts, but at $10, is half the cost. For more information call 4106374, or check out our link at Z-107.7 radio.

People People planner MOBOT presents “Losing Paradise” “Losing Paradise? Endangered Plants Here and Around the World,” an exhibition of botanical artworks, will be on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15. The exhibit will be displayed on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is included with Garden admission. T h e f re e o p e n i n g p ro g r a m , s p o n s o re d b y t h e G a rd e n i n conjunction with the Center for Plant Conservation takes place on Oct. 7 at 5:45 p.m. in Shoenberg Theater and includes remarks by Dr. Peter H. Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden; Carol Woodin, exhibitions coordinator for the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA); Dr. Kathryn Kennedy, executive director of the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC); and Dr. Matthew Albrecht, cons e r v a t i o n b i o l o g i s t a t t h e Missouri Botanical Garden. A reception will be held on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center immediately following the program with hors d’oeuvres, wine and conversation. The opening event is free and open to the public. Featuring 44 botanical artworks of endangered plants, the traveling exhibition is celebrating its national opening at the Missouri Botanical Garden. The juried exhibition was curated by the ASBA in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Works by some of the world’s most well-known botanical artists are included, as are pieces by some relative newcomers to the field. Technical assistance was provided by the Center for Plant Conservation, which is based in St. Louis, and many artworks portray subjects in its National Collection of Endangered Plants. In order to highlight the beauty and the stories of the world’s atrisk plants, artists sought out these endangered plants in botanical g a rd e n s , i n t h e f i e l d a n d i n horticultural collections. About half of the plants represented are from around the world and half are North American, including such fascinating plant stories as that of Utah’s dwarf bear-claw poppy (Arctomecon humilis), one of the rarest poppies in the world and one of the first species in the United States to be listed as endangered in 1979, and the Wollemi pine (Wollemia nobilis), thought to be extinct for 2 million years but found in a remote Australian canyon. Other American rarities include the lady’s slipper orchid (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens), the Midwestern lakeside daisy (Tetraneuris herbacea) and California’s coastal Santa Cruz cypress (Cupressus abramsiana), all listed as endangered or threatened and all part of CPC’s National Collection of Endangered Plants.

October 15, 2009

The exhibition and accompanying book ($29.95) are the result of a three-year project undertaken by ASBA members from the United States, Australia, Israel, Brazil, South Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Many of these artists will attend the opening event. Dr. Peter Raven wrote the book’s introduction, and Dr. Kathryn Kennedy contributed an essay. In addition to the opening program and reception, the Garden hosts a Beginning Botanical Painting -- Autumn Gourds class on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this course, visiting artist Marilyn Garber, president of the ASBA and founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art, teaches the basic techniques used in traditional botanical watercolor painting. Some materials will be provided; students should bring a pencil, eraser, notebook, two small containers to hold water and a sack lunch to the class. Registration is $75 for Garden members and $85 for nonmembers. The class will be held in the first-floor conference room of the Monsanto Center, located at 4500 Shaw Boulevard at the intersection of Shaw and Vandeventer. Preregistration is required at www. mobot.org/classes. The Center for Plant Conservation, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009, is the only national organization dedicated solely to saving America’s

most at-risk plants. It is a nonprofit conservation organization with a network of 36 selected botanical institutions coordinated by the national office in St. Louis. By developing standards and protocols and conducting conservation programs in horticulture, research and restoration and raising awareness, CPC’s network is striving to save America’s rarest plants from being lost forever. For additional information on the Center for Plant Conservation, visit the CPC website at www. centerforplantconservation.org. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, easily accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit. Free parking is available on-site and at two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer. For general information, visit www.mobot.org or call the recorded event line at (314) 577‑9400 or tollfree 1 (800) 642-8842. The Missouri Botanical Garden is the oldest continually operating botanical garden in the nation, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2009. Missouri Botanical Garden: Green for 150 Years.

Contemporary plans new exhibit The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is pleased to present the

international group exhibition For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there, organized by Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis Chief Curator Anthony Huberman. The first largescale collective exhibition since the Contemporary’s inaugural show in 2003, For the blind man … is on view throughout the entirety of the museum’s exhibition spaces from September 11, 2009 to January 3, 2010. For the blind man … celebrates the speculative nature of knowledge and proposes that curiosity matters more than understanding. While the artists featured in the exhibition all share our common urge to understand the world, they are also eager to keep art separate from explanation. As speculations, the works on view each allude to a search for knowledge, while insisting that art is not a code that needs cracking. Embodying a spirit of playful non-knowledge, unlearning, and productive confusion, For the blind man … is dedicated to the inquisitive mind and to the pleasures of finding our way in the dark. Sarah Crowner re-inserts into circulation the two issues of the 1917 journal The Blind Man (edited by Marcel Duchamp, Henri-Pierre Roché, and Beatrice Wood), offering copies on sale at the museum’s front desk at the publication’s original cover price of 10 and 15

cents. In search of an explanation of a painting, Marcel Broodthaers interviews his cat in a recording from 1970 in his Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles. For their 16mm film Flash in the Metropolitan (2006), Nashashibi/ Skaer (Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer) wander through the Metropolitan Museum of Art with the lights off, using a strobe light to briefly illuminate portions of small sculptural statues and vessels, as if the long story of the Metropolitan was reduced to a series of short poetic haikus. A 17th century anonymous illustration of a Renaissance Wunderkammer, or curiosity cabinet, reminds visitors that museums have long been places where people enjoy discovering extraordinary things that they do not understand. Peter Fischli and David Weiss struggle to understand the world, embracing large metaphysical and ethical questions about the human condition. In The Right Way (1983), dressed in rat and bear costumes, they walk through the infinitely beautiful Swiss countryside, through streams and glaciers, stopping to consider existential questions along the way. With a mix of humor and anguish, their childish discoveries offer playful explanations, also represented in a newly revised series of diagrams Order and Cleanliness (2003-2009).

Jacoby Arts Center Gift Shop features artist’s interactions to her tools Each month, the gift shop at the Jacoby Arts Center in Alton known as “The Artist Shop” features the works of an area artisan. Featured this month is local artist Linda J. Miller. The works presented by Miller reflect her approach to making art. The medium with which she works determines the images that evolve. When Miller is working with water-soluble oil pastels and watercolor paints, she says that she loses herself in

the pleasure of color, line, and movement. Miller rarely paints objects; but instead, paints her response to the world around her. According t o M i l l e r, h e r p a i n t i n g t i t l e d “ Wre c k i n g B a l l ” c o n t a i n s a l l of the anxiety she felt while contractors tore down the walls of her kitchen last summer. Gel pens and markers were Miller ’s inspiration to make the dancing and posturing figures of her “Goddess Series.” Miller said the colored pencil drawings began as experiments in layering color on dark paper. H o w e v e r, M i l l e r s a y s s h e couldn’t get past her fascination with the wispy quality of the lines made by the white pencils as she drew a flower that had lost it blooms. As a result, she never did get around to adding color,

but instead the flowers became figures. Miller ’s artwork will be featured in The Artist Shop at the Jacoby Arts Center through the end of September. The Artist Shop and the Jacoby Arts Center are open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays 12 noon to 4; and located in Alton just off the Clark Bridge between Ridge and Henry Streets. The Jacoby Arts Center is a n o n p ro f i t o rg a n i z a t i o n w h o s e mission is to foster the artistic development and economic success of artists, and to expand accessibility to the arts through programs that promote education, participation and exploration. The Jacoby Arts Center receives support from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Eighty-one percent of amusement parks will hold Halloween or fallthemed events this year, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. But fewer than half of them offered Halloween attractions 15 years ago, illustrating the tremendous growth in recreation related to the holiday, according to an informal survey conducted by IAAPA among more than 100 park managers. Some parks offer haunted walks and other fun for thrill-seekers, complete with zombies and bloody axemen. Other places are geared for kiddies, with pumpkin-decorating and hay rides. And some cities have haunted houses created from abandoned prisons and other creepy places using Hollywood-style special effects. Here is information on some of these attractions, compiled by the IAAPA. Scaring up a good time Area makes plans for Halloween

By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge You don’t have to cross the river to get frightened this Halloween. The Screamatorium Haunted House in Belleville will return this year with even more bang for your buck. Vice-president Tim Becherer said the Screamatorium opened its doors last year at the former Bel-Air Bowling Alley. “This is the first haunted house in the metro-east to rival the large scale St. Louis haunts, but at $10 – half the cost,” Becherer said. He said the legend is the bowling alley is haunted by a former customer who choked to death while eating in the restaurant downstairs. The Screamatorium taglines this year are: “We scare you long time” and “For 10 dolla we will make you holla.” Becherer said he started the project along with his cousin Denny Tribout Jr. who is the President and Dave Skaer and Brian Gaskill. “We both had the idea for years, but we could never find the right location and the time to put together this large of a production,” Becherer said. “We all thought this would be fun and challenging and mainly because there is no large scale haunted house on this side of the river.” Becherer said the Screamatorium had a great opening year in 2008, but they are

October 15, 2009

looking forward to this season. “The reaction last year was tremendous, but we are even more excited this year because we have lowered our price to $10 and we purchased state-of-the-art props and devices at the national trade show,” Becherer said. “In addition, we have made the house longer with the average time to get through 25 minutes.” Along with the price, Becherer said one of the other bonuses to guests is customers can wait indoors while they are in line. In addition, Becherer said the actors at Screamatorium do a great job. He said many are local college students. “Because we wanted to know who we were putting in those rooms and they do a terrific job,” Becherer said. “Their enthusiasm is as good at 6:30 p.m. as it is at the end of the night.” Becherer the Screamatorium has a lot to offer guests. “People should try us for the price,” Becherer said. “And we have a very entertaining lobby, our customers say that our live actors in every room is better than any special effect out there.” The Screamatorium is open from 6 p.m. to midnight every Friday and Saturday through Oct. 31 and on select weekdays Oct. 8, 11, 28 and 29. The cost is $10 for all ages. (The Screamatorium recommends that customers be at least 10 years old).

Family Focus Texting isn’t a dinner time activity By KARYN D. COLLINS Associated Press Holly Kopczynski always prided herself on raising her k i d s t h e r i g h t w a y, t e a c h i n g them etiquette basics like saying “please” and “thank you.” Then it happened. “We were at a restaurant for m y m o m ’ s b i r t h d a y. I l o o k e d over and there are my daughter and my oldest son texting, holding their phones under the table,” said the mom of four in Lewiston, Idaho. “I just came unglued. I was like, ‘Are y o u k i d d i n g ? Yo u ’ r e a t y o u r grandma’s birthday party. Put those phones away now!”’ We all know teens love their gadgets — more for texting than talking. But the devices are posing some new challenges for parents. How can they teach their tech-savvy kids some electronic etiquette? So far, parents are learning on the fly, imposing new rules for their young offenders such as “no texting at dinner.” Beth Herina of Ringwood, N.J., made that rule two years ago because her 13-year-old son was texting friends at the dinner table. She has another rule, too: No texting on family outings. “He can text en route but not when it is family time,” she said. “And I ask questions about who he is texting.” Her son Dylan may not like mom’s rules, but she considers them mild. Her brother-in-law goes into his children’s cell p h o n e a c c o u n t s t o re a d t h e i r texts. When it comes to gadgets like cell phones and computers, some kids and even some adults don’t seem to consider their gadget behavior rude, said P.M. Forni, co-founder of Johns Hopkins University’s Civility Initiative. “ We ’ re s e e i n g b e h a v i o r t h a t you never would have seen before,” he said. “Students getting up in the middle of class to answer their phones, texting during class, students watching TV on their laptops during lectures.” Kopczynski said she told her 20-year-old son and 16year-old daughter to shut their phones off and put them away, which they did, but it was their reaction to her order that still bothers her. “That was a sad moment for

October 15, 2009

me,” she said. “I grew up with rules, the ‘no elbows on the table’ kind of things. And I’ve raised my kids with that. But they didn’t even realize what they were doing.” It’s not only cell phones that parents are restricting. Many are establishing control over their children’s computer use — setting themselves up as administrators for Internet accounts, asking kids q u e s t i o n s a b o u t w h o t h e y a re communicating with online, and at times looking directly over their shoulders at the screen. Some even go so far as to put the computer in a common a re a o f t h e h o u s e s o t h e y c a n monitor the sites their children are visiting. Laura Lambert, a Chicago m o m o f f o u r, t r i e s n o t t o implement time limits and other rules. Her 16-year-old son has his own laptop now after years of using the family computer. “What I’ve found is if you say you only get 90 minutes, they obsess about it all day and t h e y ru s h t h ro u g h e v e r y t h i n g else and it almost elevates the importance of it,” she said. “ I f i n d t h e y re g u l a t e ( t h e i r usage) better if I just say ’I want you to balance your time better so you can get everything else done.”’ For kids, the rules and parent checks can seem intrusive and a bit extreme. Kopczynski’s daughter Kaitlyn had her phone taken away recently because she was texting after her mother told her to turn it off. “I guess I understand why there are rules,” Kaitlyn said. “But I don’t think I’m that bad. I have a lot of s who don’t have rules at all.” J o y We a v e r, w h o s e D a l l a s based Protocol Enterprises offers etiquette classes for a l l a g e s , s a i d p a re n t s s h o u l d begin establishing rules and expectations early on about cell phones and computer use. Monitor usage closely with the help of available applications and programs, she said. Sending a consistent message to children is also crucial. “ Yo u c a n ’ t h a v e t w o s e t s o f rules,” she said. “If you don’t want your children to text at the dinner table you need t o i g n o re y o u r o w n p h o n e o r excuse yourself from the table, too.”

Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot. Good group setting. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination! Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections – fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can’t be beat. La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also. Bigelo’s Bistro Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts,

October 15, 2009

but Bobby’s has a following in Madison County that most people know. Great custard, great carmel apples, lots of selections and more. Strawanna and the Bobby’s Turtle are some of the favorite selections. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover! St. Louis Bread Company Edwardsville/Collinsville 4 1/2 Stars OK men, don’t scoff at the rating, but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place.

The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. Pantera’s Pizza Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars Still some of the best pizza around, but the decor needs a bit of updating, along with the dinner ware. The buffet is good if they keep it full, but that can be an issue at times. You better put on your running shoes to get that hot selection before everyone else beats you to it! El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes. Authentic Mexican dishes are delivered promptly to your table. Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up.

Fashion Scarves & Pashminas...

They really are “freaky fast!” Big Daddy’s Edwardsville 3 stars Typical bar fare of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and wraps round out Big Daddy’s menu. They offer specials on certain days that are a real value. Service can be a bit slow when they are busy. Fiona’s Family Restaurant Edwardsville 4 stars S p e c i a l s e a c h d a y, l o t s o f selections, great breakfast. Service is fast and food is hot. Very friendly environment where you won’t spend a lot to get a great meal. Bella Milano Edwardsville 4 stars Quickly becoming a legend in Edwardsville, Bella Milano is a favorite for many. Great dining atmosphere and lots of good Italian food and drink. Come hungry with loose fitting clothing. Bull and Bear Edwardsville

3 1/2 stars A sports bar and grill with that offers bar side and dining room seating. A selection of appetizers, sandwiches, steaks, baby back ribs, chicken, seafood, pizza, and a kid’s menu make it family friendly, yet a great hangout for friends. Buffalo Wild Wings Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars If you like wings, this is a great place for you. Other selections of appetizers, sandwiches and mostly bar fare round out the menu. A little pricey for wings, but if you gotta havem’ you gotta havem’. Service is kind of a toss up. Has been good, has been slow. 47 Port Street Grill Ameristar Casino-St. Charles 5 stars This is a fantastic, fabulous steak house that is a great date night or special group night out. The steaks are perfect, the lobster delectable, the sea bass melts in your mouth, and the fresh pastries are world class. The ambiance is straight out of the “Rat Pack” scene.

Dining Delights Can anyone get a child to eat vegetables? By J.M. HIRSCH Associated Press Can television chefs make my 5year-old a better eater? Having spent too many meals watching my son skirt around the veggies on his plate — or during more pouty dinners simply shove them off — I wanted to see if the

celebrity chefs from the Food Network could persuade him to embrace produce beyond fruit. After all, when it comes to kids, the network knows its stuff. The Food Network doesn’t talk numbers, but children make up a considerable chunk of its viewers. Could that make folks like Alton Brown and Rachael Ray experts at something

that stymies most parents? I called the network and laid it out. I’d give them a profile of my son’s eating habits; they’d round up the celebrity chefs who would come up with vegetable-based recipes catered to his (sometimes frustrating) tastes. He’d try them all and declare a winner. THE KID

I shouldn’t complain about him too much. Parker scarfs eel and shrimp tempura sushi, devours Mexican mole and Ethiopian doro wat, and doesn’t know there is such a thing as white bread. He’s never been to McDonald’s and couldn’t pick Cocoa Puffs out of a lineup. Yet I can’t get him to eat veggies. Mashed potatoes are fine, but that’s the

low-hanging fruit of the produce world. As with so many kids, it hasn’t always been this way. From 6 months to 2 years, he ate everything. His favorite greens were palak paneer, a sort of curried spinach. Today, it’s “That’s disgusting!” if something green is even in his presence, never mind on his plate. See "VEGGIES" on Page 23

Dining Delights Veggies Continued from Page 22

Supposedly, this is normal. Supposedly, his tastes — especially if he’s been exposed to a broad range of foods early on — will expand. I decided not to take chances. And while the experiment isn’t scientific, my son’s immunity to the celebrity factor (we don’t have television, so he doesn’t know what the Food Network is, never mind who its stars are) means he’ll only eat something if he really likes it. THE RULES Sorry Jessica Seinfeld, no hidden vegetables allowed in this game. While sometimes there is cause to force kids (by trickery or brute strength) to eat good foods, it doesn’t teach them to make, enjoy or desire good choices. If kids only eat lima beans because they don’t know they’ve been ground up and mashed into a brownie, where’s the progress? The only other rule was that Parker had to

take at least one bite of every dish. No matter what. THE RECIPES AND CELEBRITIES • Brown, host of “The Next Iron Chef,” took the easy road and offered parsnip muffins. I almost disqualified him because the veggies are tucked inside a baked good. I let it slide because it didn’t feel as devious as putting puree in a brownie. The recipe also was jammed with 2 cups of parsnips and, based on the recipe name alone, there’s no mistaking what you’re eating. Parker eyed the sliced almonds on top of the muffin suspiciously, then plucked them off and piled them next to his plate. “Better than I thought it was going to be,” he said. “I’d take it for lunch tomorrow. Without the almonds.” • Ray, of “30 Minute Meals” fame, offered up a bechamel-soaked white lasagna baked in a cast-iron skillet. It also was heavy on green stuff — nearly 3 pounds of chopped spinach and chard. It was savory and cheesy and totally delicious. “What’s in it?” Parker asked, poking his fork

at the wilted greens. “There’s green cheese, white cheese and lasagna noodles,” one of the AP’s test kitchen cooks answered. “I don’t like the green cheese,” Parker said as he put a greens-free bite of noodle in his mouth. “Yummy, but not the greatest. I’d like it without the green. Sort of.” He never did taste any of the greens, but its proximity to the noodles was enough to sour the experience. • Alexandra Guarnaschelli, host of “Alex’s Day Off,” suggested roasted butternut squash soup with popcorn croutons. I considered this a pretty inspired idea. So did Parker. “Yum! Dad, your recipes are the best!” he said as he slurped it up. Hmm... Not only did she get him to eat squash, but I also got the credit for it. Sorry about that, Alexandra. • Holly Smith, a contestant on “The Next Iron Chef,” tried a recipe that was doomed before it was even made — pappa al pomodoro, a tomato and bread soup served at room temperature. Parker would rather eat wilted greens than touch a tomato.

“This is the wrong sort of recipe,” he said without tasting it. After a minuscule bite, “This is not my favorite. No more of this! The muffins should be the winner.” • Melissa d’Arabian, host of “Ten Dollar Dinners,” bravely offered a cheese-coated creamed spinach. We felt it best to cover this dish so he wouldn’t see it until just before taking a bite. Didn’t matter. “I knew this was the baddest recipe,” he said as he dunked the tip of one fork tine in the cheese sauce. “I’m not eating the green.” He was true to his word. We asked him to at least hold a forkful up to his nose and smell, hoping the cheesiness might draw him in. “No thank you because I might miss and put it in my mouth.” • Finally, there was a vegetable cake from Jehangir Mehta, another contestant on “The Next Iron Chef.” Think zucchini bread, but add beets, broccoli, cauliflower and hot paprika. If Mehta could get my kid to eat this, he deserved way more than just being an Iron Chef. But he didn’t.

Pet owners can decorate with style easy or one-size-fits-all solution, but each of the designers has ideas for combatting the problem. It helps to choose colors that blend with the pet’s hair color, though that can be tough in homes with more than one pet. Flynn generally loves decorating with bold hues, but his new dog’s white hairs would be very visible on, say, a deep purple sofa. In his new home, he opted for upholstery in neutral shades (“Stick with the gray and taupe family,” he says) and saved the bolder colors for walls and floors. With textures, Flynn points out that woven and nubby fabrics may show less pet hair than smoother surfaces. But there also could be a greater risk of damage; pets may be drawn to scratching nubbier weaves, or tiny nails may get caught on

By MELISSA RAYWORTH Associated Press

It’s a question that comes up frequently for interior designers: How do you create a stylish living space when a dog who sheds or a cat who scratches is part of the mix? “Many people are incorporating their pets into daily life,” designer Mallory Mathison says, yet they don’t want to sacrifice style. Designers are often called on to camouflage litter boxes, keep pet gear organized and create stylish sleeping arrangements for dogs and cats. Today, Mathison says, pet-focused design is “much more that just the old standard ’doggie door.”’ We’ve quizzed Mathison and designers Janine Carendi and Brian Patrick Flynn about their favorite strategies for designing when pets are in the picture: SOFA SCRATCHING, CHAIR CHEWING AND SEAT STAINING All three designers mentioned using indoor/outdoor rugs and fabrics in homes with pets. Flynn especially likes the velvet-like durable fabrics made by Sunbrella, which he says feel wonderful and can be washed with soap and water. “You can even clean a milkshake off it,” he says. Carendi points out that regular indoor fabrics can be treated to make them similarly durable and stainresistant. In homes with a new puppy or kitten, Flynn suggests putting the most fragile or treasured pieces of furniture in storage during the early months to protect them from damage and accidents. Retailers like Crate and Barrel’s “CB2” have attractive coffee tables for as little as $200 to $300, he says. Use an inexpensive piece until the pet is trained, then sell it on eBay and go back to your original furniture. Wood is most at risk from scratching and chewing, so remove temptation by using furniture with metal legs or bases in the rooms where the pet spends most of its time. Are snags or stains on upholstery a potential problem? Choose a sofa with seat cushions that are upholstered on both sides, so they can be flipped over to hide damage. Also, pick a sofa with several large pillows across the back, rather than one long cushion. Individual pillows can be recovered much less expensively than an entire sofa. Carendi mentions one other secret weapon: safety gear designed for babies. She has used the protective corners made to protect unsteady toddlers from sharp edges to keep

October 15, 2009

them. Mathison’s suggestion: “Ultra suedes, cotton velvets, heavy weight cottons, chenille are good choices,” as long as they are treated with a stain guard. Vacuuming and lint-brushing definitely help with pet hair, says Carendi. She has one client who uses a Roomba automatic vacuum during the day to battle pet hair. Also, training pets to stay off certain furniture can help, though it may take a lot of time and effort. One last strategy that’s simple and effective: If your pet has adopted a particular piece of furniture as a napping spot, keep a blanket draped over it. Remove the blanket just before guests arrive. The opposite also works — keep a stylish throw handy and drape it over the hairiest spots when guests are due.

Decorating with the old and new

By MELISSA RAYWORTH Associated Press

You probably didn’t realize, when you put an ornate old picture frame next to the sleek Pottery Barn sofa in your living room, that you had your finger on the pulse of America’s design culture. But you did. What some interior designers call “transitional” decorating — artfully mixing contemporary pieces with vintage ones — is “the No. 1 featured style in magazines like House Beautiful, and in Elle Decor on a fine level, and in Cottage Living,” says interior designer Mallory Mathison. It’s a trend that seems tailormade for 2009. It works in any room, and helps you get style mileage out of things you already own or buy second-hand. It’s also environmentally friendly and practical to use older items in otherwise contemporary rooms. “There is something to be said about a well-made, 50-year-old piece still doing its job in your present home,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn. “A lot of older things were just made better. But mixing those quality older pieces with something new gives them a fresh look.” Another money-saver: The look can be easily tweaked and ages beautifully, unlike all-modern or alltraditional rooms. “If everything is brand new and matchy-matchy,” Flynn says, “your home will look like a catalog or a showroom and appear flat or dated.” Designer Janine Carendi agrees: “Interiors that do not age well,” she says, “are those that are designed

without any reference to other styles.” Mixing old and new has its challenges, of course. But it can be done just as easily and more affordably than sticking with one style. “Contemporary is hard to pull off without looking cheap if you don’t have very fine things,” Mathison says. “And traditional can get old and staid if you don’t have very fine pieces also.” Another bonus: This approach is all about personal expression. “I have never come across a client who is one-dimensional,” Carendi says. “And interiors should reflect their experiences, tastes, travels and personalities. Mixing old and new is a way to achieve this.” Sounds appealing. But how do you create an eye-catching combination of old and new, rather than a jumbled hodgepodge of conflicting styles? TEXTURE, SCALE AND SHAPE “It doesn’t matter how many old or new pieces are mixed together, but rather how it’s done,” says Flynn, whose trademark style is creatively combining the two. “A

muted, traditional sitting room can be totally updated with one piece of bold modern art. On the flip side, a super-minimalist modern space can be given that unexpected touch of traditional with a crystal chandelier hanging above a sleek dining table.” One good tactic is using contrasting textures, like smooth and rough or shiny and matte. “If your new pieces and old pieces all have the same or similar textures, the room will fall flat,” Flynn says. “If your new sofa has the same type of upholstery as an old ottoman, break it up by introducing a new texture with throw pillows.” “In my old loft, I paired a sleek 1960’s vinyl sofa with rustic barn door window shutters, a gigantic traditional brass chandelier sprayed red, chrome 1970’s club chairs and a super plush kelly green shag rug. It worked well because it was balanced and had a collected look. The different styles were all united through color and scale.” You’re aiming for contrast, but

not cacophony. “I would not mix more than a few styles,” says

Carendi, but the percentage of old versus new is up to you.
