The modeling life Edwardsville woman shares love for horses By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge Cindy Neuhaus has turned her hobby of collecting model horses into a business. Neuhaus is the founder and owner of the Edwardsville-based The Lakeshore Collection, Ltd. – a company that produces limited edition fine bisque porcelain horses. Neuhaus has lived off of Dunlap Lake in Edwardsville with her husband Rick since 1991. She said her love for horses began many, many years ago when she was a child growing up in Livingston. “In 1969, I wanted a horse,” Neuhaus said. Neuhaus said she never got that horse, but in order to fill that void she started collecting model horses as a young child. More than 20 years later, she has more than 1,000 horses in her collection. And in 2002, Neuhaus took that love and made it her career. She left her job as a materials, inventory and forecasting manager to start The Lakeshore Collection, Ltd. Neuhaus said the company she was working for was going under same changes, and she just decided to leave and do something else – something she loved. So, she began the process to produce model horses. At the time, she said consumers basically had two choices when buying a model horse: a plastic piece with an average price of $45 or a
ceramic piece from $400 to $700. “ T h e re w a s n o t h i n g i n t h e middle,” Neuhaus said. Neuhaus said she wanted to fill this hole. “We fill a void for those who want heirloom-quality, more exclusive pieces than mass-produced plastic model horses made by companies such as Breyer, yet that sell at a fraction of the cost of high-end ceramic and resin pieces, which typically go for over $1,000 each,” said Neuhaus. “In recent years, plastic Breyer editions of 350 release at $150 to $200; even our more exclusive porcelain editions of no more than 30 made typically release at $140 or less.” In addition to making a more affordable model horse, Neuhaus said she also wanted to make a high quality product. She said her products are hand crafted and painted, heat fired, made with fine bisque porcelain and sculpted by the finest of today’s equine sculptors.
Neuhaus said the models are something that can be treasured for many years to come. “A heirloom-quality,” she said. She said her products are made with bisque porcelain. “Harder than earthenware or china,” Neuhaus said. Pointing to one of her horse models name Hidalgo, she said it was made from 12 molds and then fired up at more than 2,000 degrees and the hand-painted finish is hard to damage and then fired up again. She even used a car key against Hidalgo’s finish and there was no mark left on him. Another bonus, Neuhaus said is she only makes 1,000 pieces and then they are gone – limited editions. “Extra nice rare pieces,” she said. Plus, Neuhaus said many of the artists and sculptors make special artist series with just a dozen or so pieces, such as the “Art of Fire” Raku pieces by artist George Robert Boothe of St. Louis – it is one-of-akind. Neuhaus said she works with artists and sculptors all across the country to make these unique pieces. “I am constantly looking for new artists to do new editions,” Neuhaus said. Neuhaus is also doing well in the business. I n J u l y, s h e re c e i v e d s o m e recognition for her work. Two model horses from the Lakeshore Collection, Ltd. won national awards at the North American National Championship Model Horse Show conducted in Lexington, Kentucky.
Horses owned by Sue Stewart of Texas and Jeanne Farnsley of Florida won the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion honors. The NAN Championship Model Horse Show is the largest and most prestigious in the world, with more than 200 attendees and more than 6,000 models exhibited. “I couldn’t be more thrilled when I heard,” said Neuhaus. “It’s such an honor. As someone who has shown at NAN in the past and knows the caliber of pieces exhibited, many of which cost thousands of dollars each, it makes me all the more proud since Lakeshores have the quality and beauty at an affordable price, which was my objective in starting the company. ” Neuhaus said the models had to first qualify at sanctioned shows to be allowed to enter the NAN. “It is an honor just to be on the floor,” Neuhaus said. So, Neuhaus said she was excited to here two of her models had been selected not only to be in the NAN, but also be winners. At the show, she said the models are judged on a variety of items from breed, gender, condition, quality, paint, performance and more. Neuhaus said Lakeshore C o l l e c t i o n a l s o o ff e r s a f re e collectors club and bi-monthly eNewsletter, and is offering all new customers 30 percent off their first order in celebration of the championships. People People planner Saint Louis Science Center hosts Legends of Flight Saint Louis Science Center visitors and aviation enthusiasts will climb into the command seats when the newest giant screen film Legends of Flight plays out on the OMNIMAX Theater. The film demonstrates how modern science and materials help aeronautical engineers build aircraft that emulate natural flight better than ever before. “St. Louis has always been at the center of the aviation industry, from the connection to Charles Lindbergh, to the contributions of McDonnell Douglas, to the work Boeing continues here today,” said Doug King, President and CEO of the Science Center. “We’re so pleased to share this film with the community and celebrate such an important part of our city’s history.” Legends of Flight also makes generous use of computer animation and other effects to provide possibly the most advanced flight teaching tool ever presented to a general audience. “Our mission was not to make another airplane movie - but to share with the viewing public the significance of achievement in design and manufacture,” said Legends of Flight Director Stephen Low. “It brings the concept of manufactured flight closer to nature than ever before. Our goal is to connect the dots between prior aviation advances and by doing so make the viewer more aware of just how far flight has come.”
To shape its story, Legends of Flight relies on Mike Carriker the Chief Test Pilot for the Boeing 787 program and an array of seminal aircraft and designs to help the audience understand advanced airplanes. “When compared to highlyadvanced aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner is more sophisticated,” Low added. “Compared to the Constellation, it is simpler in terms of systems reliance. By making these and other comparisons, the film takes the viewer to a new level of understanding. This is not about how things work better, it is about how contemporary flight engineers are learning more about how to apply the principles of natural flight to human machines.” Carriker is himself a legend and is flight qualified on more than 100 aircraft. His insight and personal connection to aviation, art and science allows for an avenue of understanding that equally meets the fascination of a schoolchild or aviation’s most avid fan. Featured airplanes include the nonpowered Schleicher glider, Stearman PT 17 trainer and Lockheed’s classic tri-tail Super Constellation - considered by many to have been the height of piston-powered passenger aircraft design. It was the Constellation that helped solidify the notion of general passenger aviation services, with elegant cabins matched to long range capability and reliable service life. The Connie set the standard for flight comfort in the 1950s and shared ramp space with the first passenger jets. Soon, its reign as mistress of the skies was displaced by the early Boeing and McDonnell Douglas jets and European entries from deHavilland and others. In some
ways, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner resets the stage as it becomes the torch bearer for advanced passenger and cargo long-range flight and like the Constellation, cuts a dramatic profile on the runway. Legends of Flight is directed by Stephen Low and produced by The Stephen Low Company (producer Pietro L. Serapiglia), executive produced by K2 Communications (executive producers Bob Kresser and Jan Baird), and is in association with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for children, college students with an ID and seniors, and free for Members with vouchers. Showtimes are available at 314.289.4424 or slsc.org..

Decorator creates fantasies for stars
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The first time Cheryl Tiegs and Martyn Lawrence-Bullard met, they sat on folding chairs inside the fixerupper she’d just bought. It came with sticky aluminum doors, small louvered windows and worries that she might have to raze it. That was 14 years ago. They gutted the house, raised the roof and, in 14 months, turned a fivebedroom teardown into a fantasy home — “a beautiful Balinese paradise with British Colonial touches,” said Tiegs, 63. The model’s home was one of Lawrence-Bullard’s first jobs as an interior designer and still ranks as one of his favorites. At 43, he travels the globe to work and shop, and to this day keeps Tiegs’ tropical tastes in mind. Lawrence-Bullard talks about friends instead of clients. He has spent the last three Christmases with Cher, toasted every New Year since 2005 with Elton John and vacationed in Paris with Ellen Pompeo. “I love to travel with clients because we get inspired together,” he said. And they reciprocate. Tiegs threw Lawrence-Bullard’s 40th birthday party. On Oct. 18, Lawrence-Bullard receives the Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year award, an Oscar-scale honor for a decorator. In January, Architectural Digest magazine listed him as one of the world’s top 100 designers. People want to live out their fantasies, he said. “I am an enabler. What makes my job exciting is that I can help people live out their fantasies.” At her Malibu home, Cher wanted Oriental and Orientalist. For her Los Angeles duplex, she wanted an Indian fantasy: a maharani palace with a slight harem feel to it, Lawrence-Bullard said. “Cher has fantastic tastes and ideas. Her interiors are almost like stage sets and become a further e x t e n s i o n o f h e r p e r s o n a l i t y. Her extraordinary dress sense in everyday life is very rock ’n’ roll sexy, she loves that leather and lace vibe,” he said. On stage, he added, she incorporates all her fantasies, “from the gypsy look to the American Indian to her sleek ’70s Halston-y vibe.” Fantasy ideas accumulate over a lifetime, but some decorating decisions come quickly, Tiegs said. She and Lawrence-Bullard were up in the attic when they decided it would take $2,500 and one day to scoop out all the ceilings at the fixer-upper in the toney Bel Air

Now, the Great Room — “that’s capital G and capital R” — with its 35-foot
fireplace to sit and read, television space and room to exercise. “I was afraid it would become like a gymnasium. But when I walked in I burst into tears I was so happy. It was so beautiful. It was so warm and so inviting,” Tiegs said. She said she can see first-time visitors take a deep breath. “It has the calmest, sweetest, most serene vibe of any house I’ve been in,” she said. Lawrence-Bullard has freshened up Tiegs’ Great Room four times over the years with upholstery, pillows, plants and other accents. The transition in her son’s room has been a bit more extreme. Zack Peck’s room started full of friendly stuffed animals when he was 4, took on lifelike tigers and cheetahs when he was 8, and became a rock star ’s room when he was 14 and Lawrence-Bullard converted it to zebras, rock stars and music legends. Lawrence-Bullard insists on a splash of red and something green or living in every room. It also has to be clutter-free. Tiegs tends to leave books sitting around. After Lawrence-Bullard visits, she will find them all put away. She has a little Balinese lamp at her front door. “It’s very feng shui. That’s my
red,” Tiegs said. “I’m trying to green up my house as much as possible. I’ve put Cambria all over my kitchen, which is a natural quartz countertop, which is a green product. That was pretty major.” Besides Cher, John, Tiegs and Pompeo, Lawrence-Bullard’s client list includes Eva Mendes, Kid Rock, Ozzie and Sharon Osbourne and Keenen Ivory Wayans. The decorator ’s present workload includes projects in six countries. He has his own fragrance, and candle, furniture, fabric and wallpaper lines; this year ’s colors a re s a ff ro n y e l l o w, l i l a c a n d turquoise. And he has designed a series of rugs for The Rug Co. He has turned down only one interior decorating job. “I said no to gold-leafing the interior of somebody’s garage once. I found that to be somewhat vulgar and not something I wanted my name attached to,” he said. A building’s history should guide its restoration and decoration, Lawrence-Bullard said. His own home was built by silentmovie star Rudolph Valentino. Over the years, it also was owned by actress Gloria Swanson and author William Faulkner, and it has an Italian, 1920s vibe, he said.

Rosalyn Schwartz Gallery 210 exhibits a look back at her life’s work By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge St. Louis is one of the greatest locales for the arts. There are so many great galleries that showcase not only the well-known artists but give the local budding artists a place to be seen. Rosalyn Schwartz planted her painting roots here in St. Louis. She was born in St. Louis, earned her BFA at Washington University and her MFA at Fontbonne College. Schwartz recently retired after 20 years as professor of art at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Gallery 210 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will take a look back at more than 20 years of paintings and works on paper by St. Louis native Rosalyn Schwartz. The exhibit, “Rosalyn Schwartz: A Survey of Paintings,” will open with an artist’s reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Gallery 210. It will be on display through Dec. 4. Her paintings present a contemporary investigation of the quintessential conflicts between our notions of beauty and futility, perfection and impossibility. Her work has been featured in group and solo
exhibitions in Chicago, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Mo., and Gdansk, Poland. It is also part of numerous private and public collections including Harpo Studios in Chicago, Illinois State Museum in Springfield, the Aronson Collection in Philadelphia and the Wood Collection in New York. Her personal statement regarding her art reads, “While explicit in their unapologetic allure, my paintings present a contemporary investigation of the quintessential conflict between our notions of beauty and futility, perfection and impossibility. I explore these dualities by using improbable juxtapositions of representational and abstract imagery with decorative motifs and patterns taken from elements in such interiors as eighteenth-century French and German rococo and twentieth-midcentury modern contemporary interiors. I am interested in how these elaborately adorned spaces, both public and private, become visual and psychologically compelling substitutes for a presumed sense of harmony, comfort, and prosperity. My paintings are meant to implicate and seduce viewers by confronting
them with a stereotypical interpretation of the “beautiful painting,” willful in its attention to detail, intense color, and refinement of surface, at the same time that it exploits the tension between reality and illusion. Purposely not limiting subject matter to one particular idea, I am questioning the premise that there is a predictable evolution to the history of painting.” “Rosalyn Schwartz: A Survey of Paintings” is sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History at UMSL, the Center for the Humanities at UMSL, Regional Arts Commission and Missouri Arts Council. Schwartz will discuss her work beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the gallery. She will also give a slide presentation in the Gallery 210 Auditorium at 7 p.m. Nov. 3. All exhibits at Gallery 210 are free and open to the public. The gallery is in the Telecommunity Center at UMSL, One University Blvd. in St. Louis County (63121). Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Visit www.umsl.edu/~gallery or call 314-516-5976 for information.

Music
The Big Band Beat Max Weinberg to appear at Alton’s Argosy Casino By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
B
ig Band is back baby and it is better than ever! The saying is that everything eventually comes back in style and that is true of music. Big Band music has had a surge in popularity with the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble’ and even new group Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, which took one of the top spots last year in the “Greatest American Band” competitions. Maybe one of the most well known Big Band leaders would be Max Weinberg. Weinberg’s most recent gig has been with the “Conan O’Brien Show,” which was recently bumped from NBC and will begin a new run in November on WTBS. Weinberg, however, opted to end his run with O’Brien and is now hitting the road doing what he loves best – playing with his band on the road. Weinberg’s love of Big Band music came from the influences of Frank Sinatra, Count Bassie, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Doc Severinsen and Maynard Ferguson. “I’m old enough to remember when “a night on the town” included a great meal at a nightclub in New York City and a performance by entertainers like The Buddy Rich Orchestra, Duke Ellington, Bobby Darin’s Orchestra, Sammy Davis Jr. and so many others who created a golden era of musical variety. I’ve been so fortunate to not only see so many of my favorite legendary performers but, with my work on both the “Late Night” and “The Tonight Show” programs, I’ve had the opportunity to perform with such greats as Tony Bennett, BB King, Isaac Hayes (performing a classic “Shaft” with a 25-piece orchestra of my own design), grow as a musician, and finally take my act on the road,” said Weinberg. 2010 has also marked 36 years that Weinberg has performed and recorded with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. He is still planning to continue that relationship, especially after enjoying the success of the sold out 2008 Magic Tour and 2009 Working On A Dream Tour with the group. Weinberg, who was voted Rolling Stone Magazine’s Critics Poll’s Best Drummer, will share his talents with the St. Louis metro area when he comes to the Argosy Casino in Alton’s Music Hall, located at 219 Piasa Street, in Alton, on Thursday, Oct. 21, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Show time at 8:30 p.m. There is a very limited amount of VIP seating, which is very intimately placed right next to the stage and costs $50 per person. General admission tickets are $35 and will be sold right up until show time, depending on availability. Weinberg is one of the most talented musicians of this generation and brings with him some of the members of the talk show band along with a number of other talented professionals that are considered some of the best. Weinberg puts on an amazing show, performing some standards that everyone will recognize, some that he has put his own spin on, and he always has some surprises up his musical sleeves. His career is envied by most aspiring musicians, as he is has played with the best, many who are no longer with us. His bio reads, “Though citing his work through the years with Bruce and The E Street Band as, ‘the attainment of everything a 12-year old drummer from the suburbs of Jersey ever dared to dream,’ Max has kept himself busy for nearly four decades performing with the likes of Paul McCartney, Sting, Tom Jones, Ringo Starr (on Ringo’s drums!), Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bono of U2 and Levon Helm and the Band. Of particular importance and one of Max’s biggest thrills was backing Tony Bennett on television, a venue where Mr. Bennett rarely performed without his own group.” Tickets are now on sale and currently can be purchased through the link www.seemaxinalton.com “or in person at Halpin Music in Alton.”. If tickets are still available the night of the performance, they will be sold at the door.

Music Tuning in SLSO issues financial report The St. Louis Symphony completed its 2010 fiscal year on August 31, 2010. The results clearly demonstrate that ticket re v e n u e s a n d a t t e n d a n c e a re rising, and deficits shrinking, both important long-term goals laid out in the STL Symphony’s Building Our Business initiatives launched in 2008. Earned Revenues Earned Revenues for FY2010 totaled $8.1m, an increase of more than $1.03m or 14.5% over FY2009. Ticket sales, which account for 80% of earned revenue, reached $6.47m, up 16% or $890,000 over FY2009. This represents 197,105 seats sold, an increase of 18,268 seats or 10.2% over FY2009. Per concert attendance averaged 1,792, up 9.2% over prior year. These results represent the highest ticket revenue for all concerts in a decade, and the largest total attendance since 2002. Total ticket revenues and paid attendance growth over a twoyear period (since the launch of major audience development initiatives) for all concerts at Powell Hall for the 2009-10 Season as compared with the 2007-08
Season are up 33.7% or $1.63m, with total seats sold up 18.8% and per-concert average attendance up 17.7%, reversing downward sales and attendance trends that characterized preceding years. Contributed Revenues Contributed revenues totaled $8.52m, unchanged from FY2009. Annual Campaign declines were o ff s e t b y a h i g h l y s u c c e s s f u l gala - the Symphony’s first in a decade - and strength in special underwriting support for operations. Sponsorship revenues were up 3.4% over FY2009. Total contributed revenues of $8.52m in FY2010 remain up $762,000 or 9.8% over FY2008 contributed revenues totaling $7.76m. Endowment The endowment at the close of the fiscal year stood at $116.6m, down from its high of $142m in 2007, but rebounded from its March 2009 low of $93m. The “draw” for the current fiscal year, $6.24m, was down from $6.44m in FY2009, due to the overall decline in market value since start of the recession. The annual draw on endowment is calculated as 5% on a three-year rolling average. Expenses Expenses totaled $26m, 1.8% over FY2009. A disciplined and
sensible approach to expenditures continues to be a parallel strategy to revenue growth initiatives being implemented in Building Our Business. Budget Results: The “Bottom Line” The St. Louis Symphony beat its “bottom line” budget projection with its structural operating deficit declining to $2.62m for FY2010, a decline of $$337,000 or 11.4% from FY2009, and the smallest operating deficit since 2005. This decrease was achieved despite a drop in endowment revenue of $200,000 from the prior year, and was driven by growth in ticket revenues. Since 2007, the operating deficit has decreased $773,000 or 23% from $3.4m to $2.62m in FY2010, and declined as a percentage of budget from 14% to 10%. There continues to be
no accumulated debt with deficits currently funded into 2014 by special revenues raised for this purpose. Structural deficits are projected to fully close by 2019. “In 2008, we launched our Building Our Business initiatives,” said Fred Bronstein, St. Louis Symphony President a n d E x e c u t i v e D i re c t o r. “ T h e fundamental focus of the plan has been to build all operating revenues with an emphasis on audience growth, as well as maintain a disciplined approach to expense planning while investing in revenue generating approaches. These results follow two years of implementation of our plan. And we have made important p ro g re s s i n t h e k e y a re a s o f major audience development and meaningful reduction of the longstanding operating deficits. Going
forward,” Bronstein added, “we will continue to focus relentlessly on growing audience, building our fundraising base with a particular emphasis on strengthening our repeatable annual contributed revenue capability, and reducing and eliminating the structural deficit – essential to continued financial stability, all within the f r a m e w o r k o f p re s e n t i n g t h e highest quality music-making possible.” Founded in 1880, the St. Louis Symphony is the second-oldest orchestra in the country and is widely considered one of the world’s finest. In September 2005, internationally acclaimed conductor David Robertson became the 12th Music Director and second American-born conductor in the Symphony’s history.

Chile
Feeling right at home By CLAUDIA PEROZZI For The Edge Editor’s note: This is the first article of a six-part series from former Glen Carbon residents Bill and Claudia Perozzi. The Perozzis are fortunate to have traveled to some of the most exotic places in the world. Leave Los Angeles. Fly all night. Arrive back in Los Angeles? No, arrive in Santiago, Chile. We knew we had a long flight but it looked like we just circled back to southern California, where we now live. Instead we had arrived in the South American capital of Chile, the west coast country in the shape of a long, skinny chili pepper. It turns out that Santiago and Los Angeles are about equidistant to the equator and mirror each other in many ways. Both have year round warm climates, abundant agriculture, great grapes for fine wines, brown hills with green chaparral, some fog leading to some smog and lots of Spanish speaking residents. Something else they have in common is a tendency to experience earthquakes. One of the first things my husband Bill and I realized when we started planning our journey to South America is that continent is not directly south of North America but is actually significantly to the east so their west coast lines up more closely with our east coast. The next thing we learned is that we were undertaking a very complicated journey to include sightseeing on our own in Santiago and Valparaiso; a two week cruise from Valparaiso around the Horn to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with excursions along the way; a flight to Iguazu Falls and finally four days in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It would be an adventure, as vacations with Bill usually are. We felt very much at home in Santiago as we settled into our comfortable Hotel Presidente, close to many points of interest. By the way, we found all the hotels that we had reserved in South America, while not cheap by our standards, were convenient, comfortable, clean and a good value for our money. As we struggled with the language and carried our camera in plain sight, it wasn’t hard to tell we were tourists. Locals immediately won our hearts by helping us figure out what to order at restaurants and warning us to watch our wallets and cameras. Our first lunch was delicious grilled beef sandwiches with guacamole sauce. Great choice! We had written Bill’s name on our order and as we were about to leave our waitress called out his name and

motioned to hold on to the camera. We returned the favor with a good tip. We s t a r t e d t o u r i n g a t t h e beginning by visiting Santa Lucia, the park commemorating Pedro de Valdivia’s founding of Santiago and by extension, Chile. Locals reenacted the clash between Valdivia and the natives. The natives lost and then the actors posed for photos with Valdivia going Hollywood and wearing another tourist’s sunglasses. Santiago provides plenty to see and actually showed us the pattern of South American cities both large and small. The city square or Plaza des Armas is framed by a cathedral, governmental buildings and historic structures with side streets for restaurants and shopping. In the Plaza, statues attracted birds, benches offered respite to young and old, chessboards drew contestants and one crazy comedian corralled the biggest crowd. Loco Freddy’s comedy was on the raunchy side and he seized upon Bill as a token Gringo. When Bill good naturedly went along, he too became a crowd pleaser. Just off the Plaza we found the museum most highly recommended in our guide books, the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. Here we viewed artifacts from before Europeans reached South American shores. One large pottery figure had several heads stacked like a totem. Another figure of a man with extra hands and feet would have made a great waiter. Depicting extra body parts made me think the natives might have known how to multitask. There were so many sculptures in parks throughout the city that I expected the art museum to be filled with similar art. But, alas,
Photos by Bill and Claudia Perozzi
Above, the beach at Vina Del Mar. Below, Bill Perozzi with Loco Freddy. inside the Palacio de Bellas Artes with its beautiful high glass ceiling there wasn’t much left to display. A special exhibit showcased crude drawings that I thought should have gotten the artist sent for psychiatric help. We had to take a funicular ride to reach the highest sight, the white statue of Mary, mother of Jesus, who overlooks the city. She’s smaller and more approachable than the Cristo in Rio de Janeiro and is especially lovely bathed in spotlights at night. For our last night in Santiago we treated ourselves to a specialty w e h a d s e e n p i c t u re d i n a d s throughout the city: steak topped with French fries, topped with sautéed onions and crowned with two fried eggs. Would the taste match the eye appeal? Yes! In every way, Santiago left us with a good taste. We decided to take the bus from Santiago to Valparaiso, a way many locals and few tourists travel. The bus station was packed
and all signs were only in Spanish but once again the locals helped direct us to the correct ticket line. When a scalper tried to sell Bill tickets, others in line emphatically told him “no!” and kept him on course. Throughout the city we had seen couples in public displays of affection and the bus station was no exception. We saw one young couple, oblivious to the rest of the world, locked in a passionate embrace to the point that we assumed they were saying farewell before one left on a long journey. But then they just boarded the bus together and made out some more. Valparaiso nestles charmingly in a harbor on the Pacific ocean and we had only one day to see it before our cruise ship left. Before touring, we deposited our luggage at our hotel, The Patrimonial, which we eventually found down a narrow, cobble stone street. T h e u n i m p re s s i v e e x t e r i o r o f corrugated steel painted yellow opened into an elegant interior with high ceilings, old world furniture and gracious hosts. Like our hotel, other pastel colored buildings seemed stacked on the hillsides. While Santiago reminded us of southern California, Valparaiso has the seaside hilly look of northern California, especially as lights twinkle at night. In both Chilean cities we spotted something we have never seen any where else: street jugglers. Yes, right in the middle of busy intersections we could see jugglers totally focused on tossing pins or balls while cars sped by. When the traffic stopped the performers took a few minutes to pass the hat. A clever way to make a buck – if you don’t get hit or drop your balls. Another interesting character,
the deceased poet Pablo Neruda, is a national hero who lived in a five-story whimsical house in Valparaiso that is now a museum. It’s hard to appreciate the poetry of another language but climbing the spiral staircase, seeing the harbor views, imagining the gatherings of interesting guests seated in the original furniture –all this gave us insights into the mind of the man. The other man who stood out for me was the moai, the statue from Easter Island now in the nearby town of Vina del Mar. This iconic figure with the large head carved from volcanic rock is the only one in mainland Chile which annexed Easter Island as a special territory. While it was the similarities that we noticed at first, the longer we stayed the more we found the uniqueness. But our time had come to move on. Little did we realize when we left that these two lovely cities would never be quite the same. About a week after we departed on our cruise and by the time we had reached the Atlantic side of the ocean, we heard the news that Chile had an 8.8 earthquake centered in Conception but reaching to Santiago and Valparaiso. Lives were lost and b e a u t i f u l o l d b u i l d i n g s w e re damaged or destroyed. The Chileans had won our hearts which now went out to them. About a month after we returned to southern California, with our whole extended family gathered at our home in Temecula for Easter, the ground began to roll. We felt the effects of a 7.2 earthquake centered near the Mexican border. A reminder of our connection to Chile. Our journey continues as our cruise begins in the next article.

Travel Aussie lifeguards push beach safety for tourists
featuring
ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — A beach safety campaign including inflight videos and brochures in eight languages was launched Thursday by Australian lifeguards seeking to reduce the number of drowning deaths on Australian beaches. The move coincides with the release of an annual report by Surf Life Saving Australia that showed one-third of drowning victims in the last year were international tourists or migrants. Australia is known for its laid-back beach lifestyle, and locals are raised with beach rules that include only swimming between flags placed along shore, swimming with a friend, and watching the beach for any safety warning signs. In the 2009-2010 season, the overall number of coastal drowning deaths in Australia dropped to 82, from a five-year average of 88, said the report by Australia’s lifeguard organization. Twenty-six of those were tourists and migrants, compared to nine in 2006. “Our research indicates that this high-risk group has limited English skills, a lack of knowledge about the beach, overestimate their swimming ability, inadequate swimming skills and a general lack of surf safety awareness,” Surf Life Saving Australia CEO Brett Williamson said in a statement. Williamson said Surf Life Saving had worked with multicultural marketing experts to develop a campaign to spread “essential beach safety messages” to a diverse audience. Six international airlines have agreed to screen an animated safety video before landing in Australia, and the life saving organization will produce brochures, posters and online games in English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, Malay and Arabic.

Pinnacle expands Baton Rouge casino plan NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. has expanded its plan for a riverboat casino complex in Baton Rouge, including a larger hotel, more playing positions for gamblers and a covered parking facility. Las Vegas-based Pinnacle said late Monday that it decided to boost the project from $250 million to $357 million after studying the Baton Rouge market, which currently has two riverboats. “Current market research
indicates that a very significant portion of the adult population in Baton Rouge region bypasses two existing gaming options and travels two to three hours to other gaming markets,” Pinnacle CEO Anthony Sanfilippo said in a statement. “The expanded scope of our project will address this customer demand with a high-quality entertainment option that will be significantly closer to potential guests.” Pinnacle plans to compete against Hollywood Casino, owned by Penn

National Gaming Inc., and the Belle of Baton Rouge, owned by Tropicana Entertainment Inc. The new Pinnacle plan doubles the size of the casino’s hotel from 100 to 200 rooms and adds 257 more playing positions for a total
of 1,857, in addition to the 800car parking garage. The plan also envisions three restaurants, a multievent center and outdoor festival grounds. Pinnacle said it expects to fund the remaining $343 million budget
through cash-on-hand, cash flow from its other properties and a $375 million credit facility that it has not yet used. The expanded plan will have to be approved by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews
“It’s Kind of a Funny Story”
With only two feature films to their credit — “Half Nelson” and “Sugar” — Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck had already established themselves as an original, confident and exciting writing-directing team. Both movies stood out for the purity of their storytelling, the honesty of their characters and the complete lack of cliche even within genres that are pretty familiar. All this makes their third film such a letdown. It has some strong performances from a solid cast. Zach Galifianakis especially stands out in an uncharacteristically meaty, serious role, but there are also some tonal inconsistencies, too much narration and ill-fitting fantasy sequences. Ultimately, the whole effort feels too pat, given that it’s about something as complex as mental illness. The movie finds 16-year-old Craig (Keir Gilchrist) checking himself into a Brooklyn hospital. Seems he’s been feeling suicidal and wants someone to fix this for him, but he’ll have to stay there for a minimum of five days, and can’t just zip in and out overnight. Galifianakis becomes his makeshift mentor, and Emma Roberts is appealing in a more mature role as the only other teenager there; the rest of the place is populated with the stock characters you’d find in any movie set in a mental institution. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic issues, sexual content, drug material and language. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Life As We Know It”
Katherine Heigl has again been saddled with an unexpected baby, only this time, no one calls her parenting mate a schlub. Unlike Heigl’s “Knocked Up” co-star, Seth Rogen, Josh Duhamel is emphatically in her league. In “Life As We Know It,” they have a good and believable chemistry as opposites pushed together through fate. Heigl and Duhamel have handsome movie-star presences and keep the movie entertaining, even though its familiar story passes with nothing to distinguish itself from the many other similarly plotted films and sitcoms. They play godparents to mutual friends, who die suddenly. Guardianship to their baby girl is left to the pair, even though they hate each other. Everything from there proceeds exactly as you’d expect: some combination of antics with diapers, anxious speeches over kitchen sinks and — Spoiler Alert!! — gradual heartwarming toward each other and their makeshift family. With Sarah Burns and Melissa McCarthy as candid onlookers.
october 21, 2010
RATRED: PG-13 for sexual material, language and some drug content. RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Nowhere Boy”
How refreshing to go back and see John Lennon the adolescent, a scruffy, lusty, angry, beguiling, confused, defiant and yearning kid. Sure, things that were little incidents at the time — Lennon’s first meetings with fellow Beatles Paul McCartney and George Harrison, or his mom showing him how to play banjo — become momentous for the audience, knowing the musical revolution this boy will help orchestrate. Yet director Sam Taylor-Wood does a lovely job carving out this formative slice of Lennon’s life, without mythologizing the man. At times an eerie lookalike, Aaron Johnson makes a wonderful teen John, capturing the mischievous rebel we all know he had to be at that age and the pained youth torn between the stern aunt who raised him and the sparkling mother who inspired him. Kristin Scott Thomas as John’s Aunt Mimi and Anne-Marie Duff as his mother, Julia, are terrific. RATED: R for language and a scene of sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Secretariat”
In a world of inspiring real-life sports stories, the tale of Secretariat is one of a kind. It’s too bad the Hollywood version about the legendary racehorse is just another one of the pack. Director Randall Wallace and his team do what the horse and its caretakers never did on the way to Triple Crown glory in 1973. They play it completely safe, offering a classy but standard Disney-fication of the tale, whose thrilling race scenes are offset by some of the blandest “you can do it if you try” dialogue you’re likely to encounter on film. Cheery performances from Diane Lane as the housewife-turned-horse-owner and John Malkovich as Secretariat’s oddball trainer help rein in some of the movie’s sentimental excesses. Still, the movie has exhilarating moments, especially the re-creation of Secretariat’s breathless finale at the Belmont Stakes. RATED: PG for brief mild language. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
“Stone”
Robert De Niro vs. Edward Norton should have been a thrilling clash of the titans: two actors who are famous for their transformational methods, intense performances and
decades of challenging roles. Turns out their showdowns are just about the only moments worth watching. The rest is implausible melodrama. The prison tale from director John Curran and writer Angus MacLachlan is heavy on stereotypes, cliches and repetitive religious symbolism. But when the two stars square off in long scenes that make you feel as if you’re watching a play on film, it can be riveting. Norton stars as Gerald Creeson, a Michigan prisoner nicknamed “Stone” who has served eight years for covering up his grandparents’ murders with a fire. De Niro plays Jack Mabry, the parole officer tasked with deciding whether Creeson should return to the outside world. He is stoic in his demeanor both at work and home, where his longsuffering wife (Frances Conroy) spends her days drinking and feeding her emotional needs with biblical passages. Get it? These guys are both made of STONE. If it had just been about them breaking each other down, “Stone” would have been fine. Instead, it becomes a ridiculous love triangle, with Stone’s wife (Milla Jovovich) seducing Jack to ensure that he recommends Stone’s release. RATED: R for strong sexuality and violence, and pervasive language. RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Tamara Drewe”
Tamara Drewe was such a saucy little minx growing up in her idyllic village in the English countryside that years after her departure, men of various backgrounds and generations still feel a tingle at the very thought of her. Now she’s returned home in this light and whimsical affair that isn’t quite so unforgettable as the title character herself. It does feature a beguiling turn from Gemma Arterton, who is on a roll lately in various parts, including the haughty royalty in “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and the resourceful kidnapping victim in “The Disappearance of Alice Creed.” The latest entry in director Stephen Frears’ lengthy and eclectic filmography, which includes “The Queen,” “High Fidelity” and “Dangerous Liaisons,” is a clever twist on the traditional romantic British romp — only instead of being filled with charming characters, nearly everyone is selfish, scheming or unlikable. Moira Buffini’s screenplay is based on the graphic novel by Posy Simmonds, which was inspired by Thomas Hardy’s “Far From the Madding Crowd.” And wouldn’t you know, much of the action occurs at a rural writer ’s retreat where one of the would-be authors is working on a book about Thomas Hardy. Tamsin Greig, Roger Allam, Dominic Cooper and Luke Evans co-star. RATED: R for language and some sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Movies Lane befriends the real Penny Chenery By SANDY COHEN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Diane Lane didn’t know much about horse racing when she signed on to play horse owner Penny Chenery in “Secretariat.” Luckily, the actress had Chenery herself to explain the difference between a length and a furlong. “This is like Elvis trying to explain rock ’n’ roll,” Lane says. Though different careers and more than 40 years separate the two women, they became fast friends when they met last spring. Now, with “Secretariat” in theaters Friday, they reunite to discuss the legendary winning racehorse and the winning woman who owned him. At 89, Chenery is reliving the g l o r y o f S e c re t a r i a t ’ s Tr i p l e Crown win and the rough road she traveled to get him there. A housewife with a Columbia University education, she was discouraged at every turn when she decided to take over her ailing father’s Virginia stable in the early 1970s. She persevered, spending long stretches away from her family in Denver to become a horsewoman in a man’s world. “I had to raise four children, and be a wife to my husband and a community member. And then, with my left hand, I’m going to be a public figure and have a role in life,” Chenery says. “I thought, ’I’m a 50-year-old woman given a second chance at an interesting life, and I’m going to do this.”’ The film shows Chenery in charge. She faces down one of her father’s wealthy business partners,

She stands up to her naysaying brother and husband, enduring bouts of tears and loneliness as she musters the confidence to continue. She withstands taunts from the press and her competitors, all with perfectly coifed hair. “We take it for granted that we make it look easy backwards in
heels,” Lane says. But don’t call “Secretariat” a feminist film. The term makes the two women bristle. “We are all certainly ... fighting to be a person and not a woman,” Chenery says, impeccably dressed, a delicate string of pearls around her neck. “I like being a woman, and I’d rather look pretty than ugly, but that’s not the point. The point is I, as a person, am doing something.”
Lane praises her character’s reallife counterpart for not allowing herself to be pigeonholed, whether as a housewife or a face of the women’s movement. “I don’t think it’s a feminist agenda,” the 45-year-old actress says. “I think it’s more of an equality agenda and a personhood that Penny’s speaking of: recognition for your deeds, not for what you look like while you’re doing them.”
Lane added that she and Chenery “love guys, and it’s fine to be an underdog in a man’s world because they’re pretty good.” Still, Chenery’s daughter, Kate Tweedy, who is portrayed in the film as an idealistic teenager and today is an attorney, says her mother wasn’t admitted to the allmale Jockey Club until eight years after Secretariat won the Triple Crown, when three women were invited to join the group together.
It’s kind of a good movie, too By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge It is somewhat unfair to compare “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” but it has to be done. Both feature a bevy of memorable characters sharing the experience of confinement in a psychiatric treatment center while cutely fighting back against the very system designed to help them. Ken Kesey’s seminal 1962 novel, and the even more famous 1975 Best Picture-winning movie starring Jack Nicholson (which I bet you didn’t know is also based on a 1963 play by Dale Wasserman), is decidedly more adult-oriented than the new trifle from the writer-director duo of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. It is kind of a funny story, though, that proves Zach

He also comes to realize that his suicidal impulses were foolish and the worst way to act out against his stresses (namely his inattentive father, played dryly by comedian Jim Gaffigan, and the undue social and academic pressures he faces at school). Things, in fact, take an ugly turn when a sultry classmate (Zoe Kravitz), turned on by Craig’s new illness, visits with naughty intentions. Movies De Niro keeping busy TORONTO (AP) — Robert De Niro is retiring. On screen, at least. In his latest film, the psychological drama “Stone,” De Niro stars as a veteran parole officer ending his career in a showdown with a manipulative inmate (Edward Norton) and seduction by the prisoner ’s wife (Milla Jovovich). At 67, De Niro himself has no retirement plans, though he does foresee an end to one facet of his film career. After two outings as a director, he figures he has time to oversee three more movies, at most. “They take a lot out of me,” he said in an interview at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where “Stone” debuted. “They’re great to do, but just the way I did the two that I did (1993’s ’A Bronx Tale’ and 2006’s ’The Good Shepherd’) and the ones that I would do, I say to myself, maybe I would do five altogether. So three more.” That’s three, tops, De Niro makes clear, talking about the time commitment of years required as a director, compared to just weeks for some roles as an actor. Thirteen years passed between his first and second directing gigs as he maintained a busy acting schedule while developing potential filmmaking projects and trying to line up studio backing.
“It’s an uphill battle. ... The creative part, that’s difficult enough. But the fun stuff is all the other stuff that goes with it: people; the input from studios, and all the people who have to justify their jobs; and the money; and is this actor going to get more, or they’re not right for it. All the other things. It’s a lot you’ve got to field. A lot coming at you,” he said. That’s also a lot of words coming from the typically close-lipped De Niro, so you know he means it. Among possible future directing plans is another installment of “The Good Shepherd” saga, De Niro’s epic tale of the roots of the CIA that starred Matt Damon. But nothing’s definite, unlike De Niro’s on-screen career and his sideline as co-founder of the Tribeca
Film Festival, launched to help revitalize lower Manhattan after the Sept. 11 attacks. Along with “Stone,” De Niro co-starred in Robert Rodriguez’s revenge romp “Machete” and reteams with Ben Stiller for this December ’s “Little Fockers,” the third chapter in the “Meet the Parents” comedy franchise. De Niro has two other movies in the can — the action tale “The Killer Elite” and the thriller “The Dark Fields” — and he’s doing a quick three-week shoot in Italy for the anthology romance “Manual of Love 3.” He’s also set to star as Vince Lombardi in a film biography about the Green Bay Packers coach and hopes to do a sequel to his 1988 crime comedy “Midnight Run.”

A couple of things to ponder At a recent church service, the scripture reading for the day was the one that begins “Let the little children come unto me, and forbid them not, for to such belong the kingdom of heaven.” I’ve always understood that portion of scripture to be a rebuke to the disciples because it seemed to me that they did not view children as ‘important’ enough to bother Jesus. And in Jesus’ eyes, those little ones were indeed worthy. As a child, I always liked the idea of Jesus reaching out and holding those little ones close. I especially liked the artwork depicting this scripture that showed a loving Jesus surrounded by little children. It made me feel important, valued, and especially ‘loved’. Now as an adult, I find myself wondering what, other than love for all, had Jesus adding the words, “for to such belong the kingdom of heaven” Our pastor did an excellent job of explaining the need to include children in the life of the church in various ways. We were reminded that we were to provide a ‘space’ in the life of the church that always was open to the young folks.
Doris Gvillo I’ve been thinking all week about the rebuke given to the disciples even though in their eyes, they were protecting Jesus. And, I guess that is why I found myself going to my Bible to look up that other scripture in which Jesus admonishes us to ‘become like little children’. Remember when He said, “In truth I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.” What, I found myself thinking, are the qualities we lose that we had as innocent young children? Well, I think perhaps it is the complete and utter trust that children have. You have only to watch a little one reach out those tiny arms to a loving parent and know that in those tiny little individuals, there is complete trust that they will be picked up, cuddled, and comforted. I’ve watched as a parent holds out arms and says to a child, “Come on, jump, I’ll catch you.” And they jump because they ‘trust’.
As adults, do we place the same confidence in our God that when we need help? He stands ready and willing to offer comfort and strength to meet the circumstances that surround us. I think about the openness of a child. As adults, we often begin to put people into categories…those we will associate with and those we’d rather ignore. But I have watched through the years as small children smile at everyone. So, perhaps they are less judgmental than we are. I’ll even venture the guess that they are more forgiving. Haven’t you ever watched an argument that moves on to hitting, scratching and crying? But isn’t it amazing that after a ‘time out’, those same two children can play together and enjoy themselves. Are we more apt to withdraw when disagreements occur? Withdrawing is bad enough, but do we badmouth those with whom we have disagreed? Do we carry a grudge and vow not to forgive? I’m thinking about prejudice that exists among adults… perhaps it is racial, religious,
or even any diversity that sets someone apart. Have you not seen all types of little ones on a playground having a delightful time? It seems they see the ‘heart’ of a person and not their outward appearance. I guess I could go on and make this a lot longer article, but I hope that I have given you two things to ponder this week. One… that Jesus welcomes all who come willingly and accepts all regardless of age or any other difference. Two…that maybe we need to examine our lives, look into our hearts and decide if we have
incorporated into our lifestyle, the kindness and gentleness of a child. As I said in the beginning of this article, these two bits of scripture have resided in my heart for years and while sometimes I may ‘put them on the back burner ’, our pastor ’s sermon reminded me that incorporated in the simple story and the additional later admonition I remembered, we are offered a glimpse of how we should live our lives regardless of our age. Religion Religion briefs Kansas diocese launches fundraising campaign SALINA, Kan. (AP) — The needs of retired and future priests h a v e p ro m p t e d t h e C a t h o l i c Diocese of Salina to begin a $15 million capital campaign — the largest fundraising campaign in the diocese’s history. The five-year campaign, called “Yesterday, Today and Forever,” will raise money for the priest retirement fund, seminary education, Catholic Charities and a new strategic pastoral plan for the diocese. “ We ’ v e n e v e r u n d e r t a k e n anything this big in our diocese,” the Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, Bishop of Salina, said Wednesday. “It’s ambitious but attainable.” The campaign’s primary beneficiaries will be a fund for retired priests, The Salina Journal reported. “As priests in our diocese have aged, we’ve drawn on that fund, and now it’s dangerously underfunded. If we kept going the same way, it would be exhausted in five years. That was the catalyst for us,” Coakley said. It costs $1,980 a month to support each retired priest, he said. If the capital campaign goal is reached, $8 million will be allotted for the retirement fund. Coakley said the diocese has already received about $2.1 million, including significant contributions from the diocese’s 38 active priests, eight international priests, Capuchin Franciscans of Ellis County and 22 retired priests. For future priests, $3 million will be alloted for seminary costs. The average yearly cost for seminary education is $33,000, Coakley said. Another $1.25 million would be designated for Catholic Charities, with $250,000 of that for repair and renovation of the group’s headquarters. And about $750,000 will go toward a new pastoral plan to provide the dioceses’ 86 parishes w i t h e x p a n d e d t e c h n o l o g y, electronic classrooms, to strengthen family life ministries and other areas of church growth, he said. The balance of the $15 million will be used for campaign expenses and the Catholic Community Annual Appeal, he said. The campaign will start in the diocese’s eastern third, which covers counties north of Interstate Highway 70 from Manhattan to Salina. After that effort ends in December, the second phase, from January through April 2011, will move from Salina to Hays. The final phase will cover far western Kansas, from Hays to the Colorado border, from April through June 2011.

Cambridge to shut schools for Muslim holidays in what backer says is fair religious treatment CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Cambridge will close its schools for one Muslim holiday each year beginning next year. The school will close for Eid alFitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, or Eid al-Adha, which celebrates the end of the hajj, or annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims follow a lunar calendar, so the dates of holidays change each year. School administrators say they will close school on whichever holiday falls within the academic year. If both days fall within the school calendar, the district will close for one of the days. Cambridge School Committee member Marc McGovern, who advocated for the policy, argued that Cambridge schools close for some Christian and Jewish holidays and Muslims should be treated the same.

Landmark NYC synagogue’s new stained glass window culminates 24-year restoration NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s historic Eldridge Street Synagogue has a new stained glass window, capping a 24-year restoration. The 1887 synagogue was the city’s first congregation built by Eastern European Jews. It drew 1,000 worshippers during its peak years before falling into disrepair by the 1930s. The stained glass window was unveiled last week by the Museum at Eldridge Street housed within the synagogue. It’s
a focal point of the neo-Moorish interior. It replaces a clear tabletshaped glass-block installed in the 1940s. There’s no visual documentation of the original window. Pizza and wine
Edwardsville woman creates an award-winning combination By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge
S
ilvia Cianci Cloninger was recently named a top three finalist in the 2010 American Best Gourmet Pizza contest.
The contest called the Cavit Gourmet Pizza Classic is hosted by Cavit Collection wines in conjunction with Bon Appetit magazine. The contest asks contestants to enter their favorite gourmet pizza recipes and the perfect Cavit wine pairings. Cianci Cloninger entered a bresaola, mozzarella, grape tomato, arugula and balsamic pie paired with a Cavit Chardonnay. “I was visiting the Web site and saw the contest advertised,” Cianci Cloninger said. “I thought I could make a pizza and pair it with a wine.” Cianci Cloninger, a native of Italy and a professional chef, said she wanted to introduce a pizza that Americans were not familiar with – something truly Italian. “I started with bresaola, a dried cured beef,” Cianci Cloninger said. “And then I put my spin on it with buffalo mozzarella, arugula and cherry tomatoes…using balsamic on it.” Cianci Cloninger said then she selected a sweet wine to compliment it. “Something to contrast the saltiness,” she said. “Sweeter than pinot, but not too sweet.” More than 16,000 people across the country entered the contest this year, and Cianci Cloninger was one of three finalists. Last month, she said they called and told her she was a finalist. “I was not expecting it,” Cianci Cloninger said. She along with the other two finalists, one
from Boston and one from Houston , were flown to New York City to watch the judges try their pizzas and wine pairings and declare a winner. The grand prize was a trip for two to Italy . Cianci Cloninger said New York City was fun. “They picked us up in a limo,” Cianci Cloninger said. “It was nice.” Cianci Cloninger said upon arriving they took pictures and interviewed the finalists before announcing the winner. And although Cianci Cloninger did not win, she was not heartbroken. She said first, it was an honor to be a top three finalist, and second, the grand prize was a trip to Italy where she had just returned from visiting her family. “The women who won had never been to Italy ,” Cianci Cloninger said. “So, I did not mind.” Cianci Cloninger moved to Edwardsville from Italy eight years ago after meeting her husband Jason. She said “love” brought her here. And it is here, where Cianci Cloninger began doing what she loves – cooking – and where she has become a successful chef. “My family has a restaurant in Italy ,” Cianci Cloninger said. “And I love to cook.” So, Cianci Cloninger said she brought the two together. One of her first jobs was as a chef at Edwardsville’s Bella Milano for four years before moving to her current job as an executive chef in the pasta research and development at Louisa Foods in St. Louis . “The people at Bella Milano were great,” Cianci Cloninger said. She said the owners let her share some of her traditional Italian and Sicilian creations from meat balls to tiramisu. Now, Cianci Cloninger designs the pasta many see at places from Italian chain restaurants to the frozen food section at the grocery store. Although, Cianci Cloninger admits she misses being in a restaurant sometimes, there are many perks to her current job, such as spending more time with her family. In her free time, Cianci Cloninger said she cooks for her family and sometimes she teaches cooking classes, such as those offered at Dierburg’s. “It is important that you do a job you love,” she said. Cianci Cloninger said she enjoys cooking it for many reasons.

Cianci Cloninger’s Pizza with Bresaola, Mozzarella, Grapes, Tomatoes, Arugula, Parmigianino and Balsamic Main Ingredient: Cheese Course: Main Course Suggested Wine or Spirit: Cavit Chardonnay Ingredients: Pizza Dough: 2 cups high gluten flour unbleached, unenriched 200 ml warm water (80F) 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp sugar 1/3 packet dry yeast 1 tbsp high quality extra virgin olive oil Topping: 6 paper thin slices of Bresaola (substitute Prosciutto) 1 bunch of baby arugula 1/4 lb grape tomatoes halved 1/2 garlic clove minced 8 oz Buffalo Mozzarella 1/2 cup shaved Parmigianino Reggiano 1 cup Modena Balsamic Vinegar 1 tbsp confectioner sugar High Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil kosher salt dried oregano leaves
Directions: Pizza Dough: Combine water, salt, sugar and yeast. Stir until yeast is completely dissolved. Let it sit for 10 minutes, yeast should start foaming and that’s how you know that is activated. Add olive oil. Combine liquids to flour and knead dough for 15 minutes adding flour little at a time to prevent sticking on your hand until you reach the right consistency. Form a dough ball, coat with very little olive oil to prevent drying out. Place dough on a tray covered with a kitchen towel in 70 F warm room. Dough should proof for at least 3 hours. Balsamic Reduction: In a pot combine balsamic and sugar then reduce until syrupy. Place in a squirt bottle at room temperature. In a small bowl combine arugula, grape tomatoes, garlic and season with salt and little olive oil. Preheat oven at 500 F. Stretch an 18 inch diameter pizza and place on a pizza stone or a pizza tray. Drizzle with olive and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 7 minutes, then add buffalo mozzarella and sprinkle with dried oregano. Cook for 5 minutes longer. Arrange Bresaola slices on the pizza then top with arugula- grape tomatoes mix, shaved Parmigianino and drizzle with balsamic redux.

Dining Delights Turning cake pops into fame on the Internet NEW YORK (AP) – When Angie Dudley launched her baking blog three years ago she never imagined it would lead to an appearance on Martha Stewart and an invitation to the Emmys. And now she has a new accomplishment to add to the list — a spot on the New York Times Best Seller list for her new book based on that blog, “Cake Pops: Tips, Tricks and Recipes for More than 40 Irresistible Mini Treats” (Chronicle Books, 2010). BASIC CUPCAKE BITES These cake bites use a plastic candy mold to help transform round balls of cake into mini cupcake-like treats. And they are much easier to make than they look. The molds are widely available online, as well as at craft stores and baking supply shops. The candy melts usually can be found alongside the molds, but many grocers also carry a limited variety of colors. Feel free to substitute the colors of your choosing. Note that when handling the treats, the heat from your fingers can melt the chocolate. It’s a good idea to wear cloth candy gloves or other thin, clean gloves to prevent this. Start to finish: 3 hours Makes 48 cupcake bites Special equipment: Large plastic squeeze bottle (such as a clean ketchup bottle) Sheet of medium plastic candy cup molds (these resemble small muffin tins; each cup should be about 1 1/2 inches wide) Ingredients: 18 1/4-ounce box vanilla cake mix Eggs (as called for by the cake mix; most call for 3 eggs) Butter or vegetable oil (as called for by the cake mix) 12 ounces prepared frosting (any flavor) 3 pounds chocolate candy melts 1 1/2 pounds purple candy melts M&M’S or similarly shaped candy Candy sprinkles Heat the oven as directed by the cake mix directions. Coat a 9-by-13inch baking pan with baking spray. Prepare the cake mix as directed, then pour the batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake according to package directions, then let cool completely in the pan. Once the cake has cooled completely, break it into chunks and rub the chunks together between your hands over a large bowl to create crumbs. There should be no large crumbs. Add the frosting to the cake crumbs, then mix well. Divide and roll the mixture into 1 1/2-inch balls, arranging them on a

waxed paper-covered baking sheet. The cake ball should be slightly smaller than the width of the candy mold. Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap, then place in the freezer for 15 minutes to make the balls firm, but not frozen. Meanwhile, place the chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium power for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between. Once melted, transfer the chocolate to a large plastic squeeze bottle. Use the squeeze bottle to fill one cup of the candy mold about halfway with chocolate coating. Immediately place a cake ball into the coating. Slowly push the cake ball down until the pressure causes the candy coating to force its way up the mold and fill in around the sides of the cake ball. You may have to experiment with a couple to get the right amount of chocolate coating. Stop pushing once the chocolate coating reaches the top edge of the candy mold, so that it doesn’t form a lip around the edge. Repeat for the remaining cups and cake balls. Set the filled candy mold tray onto a baking sheet to keep it from bending, then place in the freezer for 3 to 5 minutes to let the chocolate set. When making the balls as directed above, you likely will need to work in batches. If the squeeze bottle of chocolate melts becomes too thick to work with, microwave briefly. Remove the tray from the freezer and separate the cupcake bites from the candy mold. Twist the mold to loosen and pull on the exposed cake ball. Set aside and repeat with remaining balls. Place the purple candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on medium power for 30 seconds at a time, stirring between, until fully melted. Holding each cupcake bite by the flat bottom, dip the rounded top into the melted purple candy coating until it meets the edge of the chocolate coating. You can also use a toothpick to touch up any uncoated areas. Immediately decorate with 1 M&M (M-side down) on the top center of the purple side and some sprinkles, then return to a waxed paper-covered baking sheet to dry and set completely. Repeat with the remaining cupcake bites. Store in an airtight container on the counter or in the refrigerator for several days. (Recipe adapted from Bakerella’s “Cake Pops,” Chronicle Books, 2010).

Television "VH1 Divas" lineup announced NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Being a diva is different than it used to be. Katy Perry, Sugarland, Keri Hilson, Nicki Minaj and Paramore are this year’s “VH1 Divas,” but they’ll be taking some of the focus off themselves, singing for the military through a partnership with the USO. Perry, Sugarland, Hilson and Minaj will perform for thousands of men and women in uniform at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Paramore will visit Marines, soldiers, airmen, sailors, coastguardsmen and reservists at a military base in the Middle East. Hilson called it an incredible opportunity. “I get to be among so many other influential women, groundbreaking women, strong, powerful, confident women, not only on that day, but just to be a part of the legacy of ’VH1 Divas,”’ she said. Hilson said she embraces the positive characteristics
of being a diva. “Strong woman, yes I am. Leader, yes I am. Innovative, creative, all those things, yes, I am that,” said Hilson. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland has a similar definition for the modern day diva. “All of these women definitely have a larger than life persona, be it on stage or who they are or what they wear,” she said. “I think there’s something to be said for celebrating that.” Hilson and Nettles love the idea of supporting the troops through the show. Hilson’s dad served in the Army before she was born, and Nettles has a brother in the Air Force. Sugarland is the only country act on the bill, and Nettles is excited to show people “that country music is hip and young and fun and accessible.”
