Cupcakes, get your cupcakes
The sweet story of a new business By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge The next time you’re in the mood for a delicious dessert and a cup of Joe, you need look no further than the University Pointe II shopping plaza on Route 157. The Cupcakery, a spin off business of The Cakery in St. Louis, opened its second St. Louis metro area location in Edwardsville Tuesday. Located behind Quiznos and next to Studio E Dance, The Cupcakery offers a variety of freshly-baked cupcakes with butter cream frosting. Co-owner Ericka Frank has had butter cream frosting running through her veins since childhood. She recalled catching the baking craze at age 12. “I saw cakes that my neighbor had been decorating and thought it was fantastic,” Frank said. “And I thought, I want to learn how to do that.” Frank’s neighbor invited her over and taught her how to decorate cakes and by age 14, Frank had made her first wedding cake. She continued to bake and decorate cakes throughout high school and college as a hobby while at the same time pursuing a degree in, of all things, nutrition and dietetics. It was when she moved to St. Louis to pursue her master’s in medical dietetics that she had a profound change of heart. “A few years after I got into the nutrition field, I realized, you know what, this is a great field, but I was not created to do this,” Frank said. “There is something else I’m supposed to be doing and I think that is baking. I love to bake. I love to decorate those cakes that I make.” A few years later in 2005, Frank decided to take the risk and follow her passion and opened The Cakery in St. Louis, which offers all-occasion cakes and customized wedding cakes. “I didn’t know if it was going to fly or not but I met a girl, Julie Van Elswyk, who was interested in making a small business work and I was the one who had that small business idea,” Frank said. “So we partnered together and it was just a great combination of her business know how and my practical production know how.” Frank credited Van Elswyk with much of The Cakery’s success. “She had family members who were business owners and so she grew up in that atmosphere and it truly excited her to create the systems,”
October 22, 2009
Frank said. “And I think that’s a lot of why we were successful is because she knew that we had to provide the same quality product over and over and over. We couldn’t keep switching things up and trying new things. Once we got it set and once we created a great product, we kept it. Our butter cream recipe has not changed. Our other recipes, we develop on a very slow basis. We aren’t coming out with new recipes every month. We try to come up with things that people are really looking for.” Just two years later, as the popularity of cupcakes washed across the country, Frank decided that she wanted to expand their operation and open The Cupcakery featuring freshly baked cupcakes. But Van Elswyk wasn’t on the same page as Frank. “It was very clear for the first time in our business relationship, we had completely opposing views about what we wanted to do about something and that was specifically about opening the cupcake shop,” Frank said. “It was a very friendly departure, but it was clear that I was excited and really felt led to open a cupcake shop and she was just not there in her life. She had just had a baby and it totally made sense that she was not ready to take on a new business venture and so she moved back to Minnesota.” Realizing that she couldn’t branch out and open The Cupcakery on her own, Frank partnered with a friend and a “huge fan” of The Cakery, Nicole Panepinto, and opened The Cupcakery in St. Louis’ Central West End (CWE) in 2007. “She (Nicole) was living out of town and when she would come back in town, she’d go to The Cakery to get our cake whether I was there or not,” Frank said. She wasn’t really coming to see me she just came to the bakery to get our little cakewiches. She’s not a baker herself but she’s the one who does a lot of business growth for us. She comes from more of a corporate background.” Now, a little over two years later, Frank and Panepinto have decided to open their second Cupcakery in Edwardsville. Edwardsville made sense for several reasons. “We chose Edwardsville because we already have a loyal following of people who drive over from E d w a rd s v i l l e a n d d r i v e o v e r f ro m o t h e r p l a c e s i n I l l i n o i s
Marci Winters-McLaughlin/The Edge
Ericka Frank, and Nicole Panepinto, co-owners of The Cupcakery, with a red velvet and a tuxedo, some of the sweet cakes offered at their newest location in Edwardsville. to the Central West End,” Frank said. “Also my business partner Nicole lived in Edwardsville for about a year and a half and really liked it and recognized that it was a growing community. And the third reason is that our business development director, Sara (Hentz) - she is the one who is helping us open new stores and coordinates that - she is from Edwardsville and absolutely loves it. Her family still lives there and so there are multiple connections that we have with the Edwardsville area. We are thrilled to be going into Edwardsville.” The Cupcakery offers seven classic flavors daily – confetti, double chocolate, gold rush, peanut butter cup, tuxedo, cuppa coffee cake and red velvet. There are four seasonal flavors that are rotated in during holiday s e a s o n s s u c h a s t h e c u r re n t pumpkin harvest. Then each month the additional feature flavors of strawberries ‘n’ cream, lemon drop, mocha cappuccino, Italian cream, island dream and grasshopper rotate into the menu. Frank pointed out that the business is driven by what customers want as is the case for red velvet being a classic flavor offered daily. “We started with red velvet as a feature flavor so red velvet would arrive for one week, every four weeks, but we had so many requests, sometimes it was more than a request, it was a demand, so February the week of Valentine’s Day, we brought in red velvet as a classic, and we have it every day now,” she said. The Cupcakery recently added Kaldi’s coffee drinks on its menu.
“We are so excited to be working with Kaldi’s because they roast right here in St. Louis,” Frank said. “We’re doing our coffee training through them. They have won national barista competitions for the quality of their products and the quality of their baristas. Eventually we will sell their whole bean coffee as well as a line of espresso drinks and brewed coffee.” Frank felt the addition of Kaldi’s coffee added to the atmosphere they were building. “It’s more of a café atmosphere even though we don’t serve meals,” she said. “We have created a café atmosphere so you can do more than just come in and pick up cupcakes. You can do both. You can come in and pick up a dozen and also have one sitting down with a friend.” The Edwardsville location will also be offering a small line of custom decorated cupcakes. “It’s sort of a hybrid approach to what we’re doing at The Cakery and The Cupcakery (in St. Louis) to be able to serve those customers who are looking for baby shower cupcakes or birthday cupcakes,” Frank said. A single cupcake at The Cupcakery costs $2.75 while a dozen runs $31. Walk-in customers can purchase up to two dozen cupcakes. “Above two dozen we do require advanced ordering because every cupcake is hand scooped,” Frank said. “We don’t have thousands on hand, but we’re baking every day.” Frank is quite pleased that she made the transition from the nutrition world to that of a baker. She commented that there “are so many great parts of this
business,” but that one of the most recent satisfying parts didn’t have anything to do with batter or butter cream. “This may sound cliché but it really is true, that we have given job opportunities to people who otherwise might not have had them,” she said. “The economy that we’ve been experiencing in the last year, it has been so rewarding to have maintained our business and have been continuing our business growth through this time and we feel very blessed, very blessed, that we have maintained our business throughout this and we’re still able to hire people when other businesses unfortunately have sometimes had to lay off people.” While the economy continues to plod along, Frank felt that there would always be a market for their cupcakes. “Cupcakes are one of those affordable indulgences,” she said. “It’s not too expensive to go out and have a fantastic coffee drink and a really delicious cupcake. Most likely both of those things together are going to be less than one really nice dessert at a fancy restaurant. So couples when maybe they would have gone out and have an entire diner, maybe now they can just go out and have a cupcake and coffee for dessert and still feel like they have really treated themselves and had an enjoyable night out.” The Cupcakery is open 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 Friday and Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Visit the Cupcakery’s Web site at www.cravethecup.com to view the weekly menu calendar.

People People planner Science cafe focuses on plants Climate change, pests, weeds and man’s impact on habitat destruction threaten plant diversity and sustainability. So, what’s being done to save plants? Join Dr. Matthew Albrecht, assistant curator of conservation biology at the Missouri Botanical Garden, for “Saving Plants in a Changing Climate,” Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7p.m. The evening of informal discussion will be held at Herbie’s Restaurant, 405 N. Euclid Ave. in St. Louis. The event is free to attend. Food and beverages are available for purchase. At Science Cafe, Albrecht will discuss the crucial role botanical gardens play in saving plants from habitat destruction and the challenges and solutions they face in doing so. Albrecht focuses his research on rare plant
Immanuel populations and ex situ conservation, the practice of storing plants in off-site seed banks. This form of conservation complements habitat protection and is a practical and efficient way to conserve plant diversity and ensure that the basic ecosystems on which human populations depend are sustained indefinitely. Plants conserved in seed banks are protected from habitat destruction, climate change, and exotic pests and weeds and are immediately available as genetic stock for largescale habitat restoration projects and focused species management. Science Café offers stimulating conversation about issues in the news each month. The series is presented by the Saint Louis Science Center and the Missouri Botanical Garden. The Newsboys
Christian Rock group to perform at the Family Arena By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge There was a time when my now 20 year old son, then 5 years old, stood in a theater seat at The Fox and waved his arms back and forth as The Newsboys sang their hit “Shine.” They opened up that night for Steven Curtis Chapman, who was my son’s favorite artist at the time, and although Chapman was the headliner, The Newsboys made a lifelong fan out of my son that night. Although The Newsboys are a Christian rock group with the goal of bringing the gospel to the world, they are a group that reaches out to all ages and all music lovers. Full of energy and life, the group puts on a show that is sure to encourage those who experience the performance. That is still the case 15 years after our experience. The group has been together for 22 years, performing more than 2,000 shows. Recently, frontman Peter Furler decided to take a step back, making way for Michael Tait, formerly of dc Talk, to become the bands lead singer. Furler will still continue to perform from time to time, making special appearances with the band, along with songwriting and production. “For me, the decision is that after traveling many thousands of miles across land and sea for over 22 years,
October 22, 2009
along with needing to constantly keep writing and reach production deadlines – let alone feed my dog – it was time for something to give, and my booking agent and his GPS drew the short straw!” said Furler about his departure in his blog on the group’s site. To date, The Newsboys have sold over 6 million albums, minted five gold records, charted more than 25 No. 1 radio hits and earned four Grammy nominations. “In the Hands of God,” their newest release, wipes the slate clean with vivid flashbacks to a fresh-faced Australian band struggling to find its place. By retracing its early footsteps, the band captures an urgency and hunger that lights the songs ablaze with internal fire. The album then channels this energy into an unbreakable string of quick-hitting melodies that never seem to fade. Enticed to hear more? You are in luck, as The Newsboys will be performing at the Family Arena on Friday, Oct. 23. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Along with The Newsboys will be MelnMotion, Seventh Day Slumber and Bread of Stone. The Family Arena is located at 2002 Arena Parkway, in St. Charles, just off Fifth Street. Tickets are $25, $30 and $35 each and are available at MetroTix.com. For more information or a map of the arena, visit www.familyarena.com.

Music Tuning in Arianna String Quartet presents Messages of Hope St. Louis’ own Arianna String Quartet will perform Messages of Hope, an endearing tribute to Hans Krása, Pavel Haas, Erwin Schulhoff, Viktor Ullmann and Gideon Klein – prolific composers who were lost to the Holocaust but whose profound work lives on. This second concert in the quartet’s 2009-10 four-show series is on Friday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. in the E. Desmond & Mary Ann Lee Theater. “These were the hottest, most talented, young composers in Eastern and Western Europe in the 1920s and ‘30s,” explained Arianna String Quartet cellist Kurt Baldwin. “They would have had a profound effect on the second half of the 20th century as far as the continuation of tradition and expansion of thought and ideas.” The Arianna String Quartet (ASQ), recognized as one of America’s finest chamber ensembles, will perform: Krása’s Theme and Variations; Shulhoff ’s Five Pieces for String Quartet; Haas’ Quartet No. 1, Op. 3; Klein’s String Quartet, Op. 2; and Ullmann’s String Quartet No. 3. Some of these works were written prior to World War II and some were written in the concentration camps. But all endure as an inextinguishable voice of humanity. “It’s important to embrace the connection we have today to the immediate past,” added Baldwin. “And World War II was yesterday as far as Western History is concerned.” Ullmann (1898-1944), Haas (18991944), Klein (1919-1945) and Krása (1899-1944) were imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp (often referred to as Terezín) during World War II. Despite the terrible living conditions and the constant threat of deportation, the authorities at Theresienstadt allowed a cultural life in the camp. These composers took an active part in the musical life which flourished, from within the most appalling conditions. However, along with thousands of others, these composers were eventually taken to Auschwitz, the largest of Nazi Germany’s concentration camps, and killed. Schulhoff (1894-1942) was imprisoned in the Wulzburg camp, where he died of tuberculosis
after one year of imprisonment. At the time his death Schulhoff was sketching his Eighth Symphony. Formed in 1992, ASQ is the quartet-in-residence at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and has been hailed as one of the cultural gems of the St. Louis region by Sarah Bryan Miller of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The ensemble is comprised of highly accomplished musicians – violinists John McGrosso and David Gillham, violist Joanna Mendoza and cellist Kurt Baldwin. The quartet has performed throughout the United States, Mexico, Japan, Canada and France to rave reviews. The ensemble’s touring has given them greater exposure, leading to recordings with classic labels. This summer, the Arianna String Quartet signed an exclusive, long-term recording contract with Centaur Records, North America’s oldest independent classical music label. To further enhance the patron’s live experience at the Arianna String Quartet’s Messages of Hope, the Touhill is offering the E3! program, Explore – Experience – Engage, in association with this performance. E3! pre-show discussions, which begin 50 minutes prior to the performance, and post-show receptions are free to ticket holders. Tickets for the Arianna String Quartet are $20. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949; and toll-free at 866.516.4949. The Touhill’s Ticket Office is located at One University Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63121. All St. Louis area students receive a 10% discount on two tickets with their I.D. Group and senior discounts are also available. The Touhill Performing Arts Center is located on the north campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, just 10 minutes from Clayton. “Whip It”
Drew Barrymore has forged a persona as both an actress and producer with movies that exude a playful sense of girl power, so it only makes sense that her first feature as a director would share that same sort of vibe. What is surprising, though, is Barrymore’s ability to find just the right tone all the time, which would be a difficult feat for any first-time filmmaker to achieve — even one who’s had the benefit of spending her entire life on movie sets. “Whip It” is funny without trying too hard to be wacky, sweet without being overly sentimental. It has an appealing sort of low-budget, ‘70s-style kitsch. And after a recent string of femalecentric films including “All About Steve” and “The Ugly Truth” that wallow in the worst kinds of stereotypes, it is such a relief to see women depicted as strong, smart, cool individuals. It’s also a joy to see Ellen Page play a character other than the impossibly clever smart-alecks she’s become known for in movies like “Juno” and “Hard Candy.” Here, Page stars as Bliss Cavendar, a misfit growing up in the nowhere town of Bodeen, Texas, and working as a waitress at the local barbecue joint. Bliss is reluctantly following in the footsteps of her beauty-queen mother (Marcia Gay Harden), but on a visit to the big city of Austin, she sees a flier for the local roller derby league and is immediately intrigued. Not only does she secretly try out, she makes it and becomes the league’s petite, speedy star. Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Juliette Lewis, stuntwoman Zoe Bell and Barrymore herself are among the solid supporting cast. RATED” PG-13 for sexual content including crude dialogue, language and drug material. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Zombieland”
You’d be justified in thinking you’ve visited “Zombieland” before. There’s been no shortage of zombies at the movies in recent years, just as there’s been no shortage of vampires. And within that genre, a crop of zombie comedies has arisen, from “Shaun of the Dead” to “Zombie Strippers” to “Dead Snow.” Like “Shaun” before it, though, “Zombieland” mostly finds that tricky balance of the laugh-out-loud funny and the makeyou-jump scary, of deadpan laughs and intense energy. It’s a total blast even if the story is a bit thin, and it does run out of steam toward the end, but thankfully our trip to “Zombieland” is appropriately quick. First-time director Ruben Fleischer grabs you from the get-go with stylized visuals, and the script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is hilariously bizarre while still remaining rooted in contemporary reality. Jesse Eisenberg stars as an uber-nerdy college student who’s managed to survive a viral zombie outbreak by adhering to a strict series of rules, which are inspired by his innate fear of everything. While trying to get home to Ohio to see what’s become of his
October 22, 2009
parents, he runs into a fellow survivor (Woody Harrelson) who’s his brash, butt-kicking opposite. They come to regard each other by their destinations — Columbus and Tallahassee — rather than their real names to avoid forging a personal relationship, should potential zombiedom force either of them to take drastic action against the other. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin co-star as Wichita and Little Rock, sisters who join them in hopes of staying alive. RATED: R for horror violence/gore and language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
“Couples Retreat”
This is what life might have been like if the guys from “Swingers” had grown up, moved to the suburbs and turned into lame, sitcommy cliches. Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again, on screen and on the script (along with Dana Fox), for this broad comedy about four couples who go on a tropical vacation together. In theory, they’re all there to support their friends Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) as they try to save their marriage through the couples’ counseling the resort offers. Little do they know they’ll get sucked into agonizing therapy sessions that reveal their own rifts. Under the direction of Peter Billingsley, another longtime Vaughn friend and collaborator making his first feature, “Couples Retreat” veers back and forth in a jarring way between crude sexual humor and supposedly poignant moments. The couples endure forced nudity and a wildly erotic yoga class; Favreau’s character, Joey, and his wife Lucy (Kristin Davis) each try to get it on with their respective massage therapists. But they also must bare their souls. Each of these characters is exactly the same person the whole way through, until one night when they all magically experience an epiphany that makes them more communicative, patient and loving. During such moments, a distracting, feel-good score — surprisingly from “Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman — pipes in early and often. A few funny lines emerge here and there, but “Couples Retreat” mostly feels repetitive and overlong at nearly two hours. You wouldn’t mind getting voted off this island. RATED: PG-13 on appeal for sexual content and language. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“An Education”
Sixteen-year-old Jenny learns the ways of the world in this coming-of-age drama, but there’s a revelation in store for us, as well. We get the pleasure of meeting an exciting young actress who surely deserves to become a star. Carey Mulligan is radiant as a suburban teenager in 1961 London who’s curious and clever beyond her years but still rather innocent and impressionable. Although she’s a diligent student and dutiful
daughter, she sits alone in her bedroom at night longing to be grown-up enough to live in Paris on her own, basking in the culture. Mulligan maintains a beautifully believable balance of these contrasting forces, even as Jenny gets drawn from the sedate and boring life she knows into a glamorous new one. Her guide is David (Peter Sarsgaard doing a solid British accent), a thirtysomething man with whom she experiences an immediate connection. He whisks her away in his flashy sports car to nights filled with concerts and late-night suppers and, eventually, weekend trips out of town. Even her protective parents (Alfred Molina and Cara Seymour), who are initially skeptical of David’s intentions because of the age difference, fall for his urbane charms. Director Lone Scherfig and writer Nick Hornby find just the right touch here with some tricky material, based on the memoir by Lynn Barber. The challenge is: how to make David, and this ill-advised relationship, seem thrilling rather than creepy? Through Jenny’s eyes, we get caught up in the excitement, too, but as bystanders we know it can’t last — even before David’s dark side starts to surface — and that’s what gives “An Education” an inescapable tension. RATED: PG-13 for mature thematic material involving sexual content, and for smoking. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
“Good Hair”
What’s so funny about so many black women wanting “white” hair? Plenty, it turns out, in Chris Rock’s surprisingly insightful documentary. The well-known history of black people straightening their natural curls is more tragedy than comedy, rooted in the bygone belief that all things European were better than anything African. But Rock illuminates this old story through a poignant mix of interviews, investigation and his trademark satire. More than a dozen famous and beautiful black women sit for Rock’s camera, ranging from the sage Maya Angelou to video vixen Melyssa Ford to an interior designer with a skin disease that has left her proudly bald. Their testimony illuminates today’s reality: Black women who straighten their hair are not ashamed of their heritage — like women the world over, they just want to work with what they have. There are many scenes in beauty and barber shops across the country, where the various meanings, rules and ramifications of black hairstyles are discussed. But the best revelations come when Rock examines the sodium hydroxide relaxer that turns nappy heads silky, and the origins of the shorn human hair that is “weaved” into shorter tresses to create the illusion of length and fullness. Rock is the perfect host. His ad-libbed quips and silly-serious questions put interview subjects and viewers at ease with this sometimes painful reality, keeping them laughing instead of crying. RATED” PG-13 for sex and drug references and brief partial nudity. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Barrymore shines in “Whip It” By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Drew Barrymore has forged a persona as both an actress and producer with movies that exude a playful sense of girl power, so it only makes sense that “Whip It,” her first feature as a director, would share that same sort of vibe. In this film publicity image released by Fox Searchlight, Drew Barrymore, left, Ellen Page and Kristen Wiig, right, are shown in a scene from, “Whip It.” the competition. With tonguein-cheek names like Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), Bloody Holly (stuntwoman Zoe Bell) and Smashley Simpson (Barrymore herself), they’re perennial cellardwellers but they don’t care. They’re too busy having fun. (Their coach, however, takes the sport way too seriously; he’s played hilariously by Andrew Wilson, older brother of Owen and Luke,
in stringy blond hair and cut-off denim shorts.) What’s endearing about these characters — inspired by the memoir by Shauna Cross, a Los Angeles Derby Dolls member who also wrote the script — is that these women are tough on the outside but decent to the core. They’ll shove and elbow and knock each other to the ground, but all go out for beers afterward and compare
bruises. Bliss finds a home among them and finds out what she’s made of in the process, blossoming from awkward young woman to confident athlete. Trouble is, at 17 she’s lied about her age to get in, and she’s lied to her family about where she’s been going all those nights she’s been competing. Clearly this conflict will come to a head, and in that regard, “Whip
It” is pretty predictable. Of course, the roller derby championship will take place on the same night as the all-important Miss Blue Bonnet Pageant. The Hurl Scouts will be pitted against the league’s best team, the Holy Rollers, led by Bliss’ nemesis, Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis). And the indie rock stud (Landon Pigg) to whom Bliss gives her heart might not be so worthy of it.
“The Invention of Lying” may surprise you By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The only new release in theatres this weekend, the angry comedy “Couples’ Retreat,” is a story about three couples (Faizon Love and Kali Hawk, Vince Vaughn and Malin Ackerman, and Jon Favreau and Kristen Davis) who venture off to Bora Bora for a farce-filled week of headsmacking marital counseling in a bid to save their friends (Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman) from splitting up for good. There wasn’t much meat on that bone, so I took a chance on something a little more out of the ordinary that really made an impact on me. Ricky Gervais stars in “The Invention of Lying” and it may be dismissed as a rather formulaic little laugher, but I found the razorsharp satire to be both intelligent, thoughtprovoking, and hilarious. It’s also full to the brim with amazing celebrity cameos. Mark Bellison (Gervais) is fat and

“The Invention of Lying”
RATED: PG-13 for language including some sexual material and a drug reference. ROBERT’S RANKING: three and a half stars out of four unhappy. He gets no respect from his coworkers and has little to look forward to. Women never look his way and, when they do, all they see is his snub little nose. These are basic facts that come up a little too frequently in the movie. It begins with narration by Gervais introducing us to the world he lives in, a world where no one knows how to lie. They can’t tell untruths. There is no genial flattery. In fact, it’s a bizarre little world where every character says exactly what’s on their mind all the time. There are numerous funny moments (bad
dates, awkward doctor ’s visits) when the population of this always honest society quips things that a more conditioned collection of people would think twice before uttering. Lying by omission doesn’t exist in this world and bluntness is just a way of life. As funny as this is for the audience, it’s epically tragic for the unlucky characters like Mark’s drinking buddy, Greg (Louis C.K.), and his suicidal neighbor, Frank (Jonah Hill). Even Mark’s blind date with the beautiful Anna (Jennifer Garner) is a bust from the minute she first opens the door and tells him that he isn’t what she’s looking for. Out of work and facing eviction, Mark has an epiphany while waiting in line to close out his bank account. What if he were to tell the cashier the amount of money he wanted rather than the amount he had? In this moment of clarity, the birth of the lie is depicted as a stroke, literally, of genius. A world of possibility opens for Mark Bellison at this point and he finally can have things exactly as he wants them.
His dream home, success in his screenwriting career, and mountains of money are his for the taking and he has no problem taking them. When it comes to evening the score with Anna, however, Mark is crippled by a clash of conscience that keeps him still from being with the woman he loves. Here is where “The Invention of Lying” takes a turn I never saw coming. It becomes the richest satire on religion that one could ever hope to see tastefully done. When the masses question the elaborate musings Mark spouts forth, he claims that they are all communicated to him by a “Man in the Sky” that controls every element of our lives, both good and bad. What he’d hoped would be a simple brush off turns out for Mark to be a task similar to founding the Christian faith—complete with commandments written on pizza box tablets. It was in this moment that it occurred to me how much we all lie, even just little white lies, in every day of our lives. Think about that.

Vertebral misalignments or fixations (subluxations) are very common and often do not cause pain. Symptoms are not a good way to judge health. Sometimes they appear much later. (How many times have you been told you have a cavity and haven’t experienced any pain?) A person can benefit from a healthy spine, no matter what his or her health status is. Chiropractic is not just about treating low back pain, but about making a fundamental change in the way the body works. That’s why doctors of chiropractic suggest spinal checkups for all members of the family. Help awaken your inner being by calling for a chiropractic spinal check-up today at (618) 656-0178.

Kayaking with the manatees By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Swimming with the dolphins used to be the trendy vacation offering that everyone dreamed of doing. Now that everyone and their uncle has donned their Speedo with Flipper, it is time for a new adventure. How about kayaking with the manatees? Save the Manatee Club is promoting kayak tours to see endangered manatees in Crystal River, Fla., as an alternative way to view manatees without disrupting their natural behavior in the wild. Hundreds of manatees gather at natural warm springs in this area throughout the cooler winter months. The ecotours, as they are called, are not just for the for the “green at heart,”

but provide passive observation of manatees and are offered by Aardvark’s Florida Kayak Company from October 2009 through April 2010. Participation in the tours will also help protect manatees, since 10 percent of each tour booked by a Save the Manatee Club member will go toward the club’s manatee conservation efforts. This year marks the first time Save the Manatee Club has promoted more tours over a longer time period. “The kayak tours have proven to be very popular and usually fill up fast,” says Patrick Rose, Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club. “In past years, we have only offered 12 tours, but our expanded partnership with Aardvark’s will give members more options to fit into their busy schedules.”
Each kayak trip starts with a brief education session on manatees as well as basic kayaking tips before the paddling trip begins through the scenic waters of Crystal River on Florida’s central west coast. The manatee ecotours are led by Matt and Sue Clemons, owners of Aadvark’s Florida Kayak Company. Matt is a wildlife biologist with several years experience conducting manatee research, and Sue is a former park ranger. “Our manatee tours are conducted with a hands-off approach,” explained Matt. “We believe that wild animals need to stay wild and the true ecotourist looks, but does not touch.” The cost of each tour is $40 per person and includes an experienced guide along with a kayak, paddle, and life jacket rental.
Each tour typically runs about three hours. Kayaking experience is not required and beginners are welcome. R e s e r v a t i o n s a re re q u i re d a n d c a n be booked directly through the kayak company. Email Aardvark’s at info@ floridakayakcompany.com, or call 352-7955650. Tour participants are responsible for all travel, hotel, meals, and other expenses. Save the Manatee Club, a national nonprofit conservation organization, was co-founded in 1981 by singer/songwriter, Jimmy Buffett. For more information about manatees, or the Adopt-A-Manatee program, visit their Web site at www.savethemanatee.org, or contact them at 500 North Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, or call 1-800-432-JOIN (5646).

Travel Travel briefs ’Bed in a Tree’ guide: Sleep in a seashell, wine barrel or prison cell NEW YORK (AP) — How would you like to sleep in a giant seashell, wine barrel, prison cell or castle? These are just a few of the incredible lodging options featured in “Bed in a Tree and Other Amazing Hotels Around the World” (Eyewitness Travel, $25). Author Bettina Kowalewski slept in each one of the 27 unusual accommodations described in the book, from a bed in a cave in Cappodocia, Turkey, to a bed in the Ice Hotel in Norrbotten, Sweden. Each entry is accompanied by suggestions for things to do nearby. She also found a hotel designed like a giant doghouse, the Dog Bark Park Inn, in Cottonwood, Idaho; another in Germany’s Rhine Valley where huge wine barrels have been outfitted with two beds each at the Hotel Lindenwirt; and a converted prison in Lucerne, Switzerland, where you can sleep in a cell at the Jailhotel Lowengraben. On Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancun, Mexico, there are two giant white manmade seashells, outfitted
with beds and bathrooms, called Casa Caracol, and in Scotland, on the Isle of Mull, you can stay in a castle. Kowalewski also describes treehouse lodging in New Zealand; beds in spheres suspended from trees on Vancouver Island in Canada, called Free Spirit Spheres; and the place that “Bed in a Tree” is named for: a roofless, open-air bed with a mosquito net in a platform in a tree in the South African bus. It’s part of the five-star safari lodge Lion Sands, offering a front-row seat for viewing wildlife for those adventurous enough to try it.

For The Edge
Madra Thomas
Local couple bring legends to life By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Whether you are a Billie Holliday fan or you enjoy performances such as “Menopause the Musical” or “A Love Song for Miss Lydia,” Glen Carbon resident Mardra Thomas has performed them all. Mardra and her husband, Reginald Thomas, are premier artists who not only perform around the St. Louis area, but all around the country and in other parts of the world, sharing their talents. Mardra combines her theatrical and musical talents and keeps the history of jazz alive performing “The Jazz Story” at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis. She is an accomplished jazz vocalist who performs in a variety of styles. Her voice has been described as “sultry and satiny,” and she has been featured with big bands, small groups and solo pianists. Reginald, or “Reggie” as friends and colleagues know him, is a professor of music at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), where he teaches jazz piano, education, history, theory and improvisation and directs combos, big band and vocal jazz ensemble. He is a consultant/clinician for “Jazz at Lincoln Center,” working with the “Essentially Ellington Competition” and “Band Director Academy.” Along with several other accolades, Reggie has directed All State Jazz Bands and Combos and Jazz Choirs in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Main, South Dakota, Tennessee and directed the first-ever Missouri All-College Jazz Band. Mardra is a talented actress, delivering stunning
interpretations of both Bessie and Sadie Delaney in “Having Our Say,” Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson Bar,” Sister Laura in “Tambourines to Glory,” Lady in Green “For Colored Girls,” Miss Lydia in “A Love Song for Miss Lydis,” Mama in Terry McMillan’s “Mama” which was performed at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Power Woman in “Menopause the Musical.” Reginald has recorded with many artists, including his wife, in which they recorded “Standard Time” and “Fade To Blue.” They both have performed with many world renowned artists, not to mention their own group OGD (Organ, Guitar, Drums), a jazz group. They have performed locally at Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis, the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis and the Miles Davis Festival in East St. Louis. They have also traveled to many venues in the U.S. and worldwide, such as IAJE in Toronto, Canada, the Blue Room in Kansas City, the Birch Creek Music Center in Door County, Wisc., the North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, Holland, and many more. Currently, Mardra and Reginald are putting their talents to work in the production of “Lady Day at the Boston Bistro.” Once again, Mardra will dazzle as the wonderful “Billie Holiday” and Reggie will bring Billie’s pianist, Sonny White, to life. The performances are currently running Thursday, Oct. 22 through Sunday, Oct. 25. at the Ivory Theater, which is located at 7620 Michigan Ave., in St. Louis. Tickets are available by calling Unity Theatre Ensemble at 314-355-3586. There is also more information about the theatre ensemble at www.utensemble.com.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One out of eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The Bassett Furniture and Design Team of St. Louis were deeply affected by breast cancer this past year. Our warehouse manager, Liz Fiedler, a 33 year old mother of two was diagnosed with aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer brought on by her pregnancy. At the time of diagnosis her daughter Katelyn was 5 years old and Madeline, her baby was 8 months old. In her year odyssey to renewed health Liz used only 2 1/2 weeks of her vacation time in order to have her mastectomy. She worked throughout her months of chemo and radiation treatments. She also laughed, cried, “mommied” and inspired us with her courage and strength in choosing how to live with cancer. In her eyes, Liz is not a super-heroine, nor is she super nice. She is a determined woman who fought cancer on her terms. To our team she is the bravest woman we know, an absolute inspiration. Instead of wallowing in sorrow, Liz faced her difficulties of cancer with optimism and courage. Liz not only survived cancer, she was able to actually grow in spirit and strength during her battle with cancer. The healing power is generated by our Team’s prayers and faith and her good medical treatment lets us all know that there is a wonderful life not only after remission but also through a cancer experience. Do you have a friend, sister or co-worker who is dealing with or survived cancer? Team Bassett would like to honor her with a gift. Please tell us about your deserving nominee and let us know what we can do to help make the journey a bit easier. Would she like a special night out, a gift for her children or a new wig? Tell us what you feel would make her feel appreciated and special. We’d love to share in a small way in her journey to renewed health and happiness. Please email your story to pinkribbonbassettstl.com and explain what we can do to help. (Requests limited to $1000)
October is also Custom Upholstery Sale Month! Our designers help create beautiful homes with affordable custom furniture. Call or Visit to schedule a design appointment with one of our friendly, knowledgeable designers.

Wash. U. to present “Ragtime” “Ragtime,” Terrence McNally’s acclaimed adaptation of the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, is a sweeping and ambitious tale of race, class and the promise of America at the dawn of the 20th century. It is also a tremendously demanding theatrical production, requiring almost 50 actors and at least a dozen musicians. Indeed, “Ragtime” is so logistically challenging — more than 150 different costumes must be designed and sewn — that it virtually precludes staging by all but the largest of regional theaters. Yet next month, The Black Rep will join forces with Washington University’s Performing Arts Department (PAD) in Arts & Sciences to present this Tony Awardwinning musical as the PAD’s fall Mainstage production. Performances will take place in the university’s Edison Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Performances will then continue the next two weekends, at 8 p.m.
Oct. 23, 24, 30 and 31; and at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. Edison Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Student Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. Tickets are $20, or $15 for Washington University faculty and staff and $10 for children, students and seniors. Tickets are available through the Edison Theatre Box Office, (314) 935-6543, and through all MetroTix outlets. For more information, call (314) 935-6543 or visit padarts.wustl.edu. Set predominantly in New York, Ragtime follows three families — one Jewish immigrant, one upper-class Protestant and one African-American — as their lives intertwine amidst the era’s social upheavals. At the center of the story is Coalhouse Walker Jr., a successful and easygoing ragtime piano player who turns to violence after a white mob destroys his custom Model T. Mingling with the fictional characters are historical figures from the period, ranging from Henry Ford and Booker T. Washington to Harry Houdini and the anarchist Emma Goldman. “In essence, Ragtime is the story of America,” says director Ron Himes, founder of The Black Rep as well as the Henry E. Hampton Jr. artist-in-residence in the PAD. “It’s the immigrant story and the AfricanAmerican story and the story of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and all the intersections inbetween. It’s also a story about justice — who gets justice and who doesn’t. In a lot of ways, the issues it raises are still with us today.

On Saturday, October 31 families are invited to the museum for an art-filled day with a Halloween theme. “The Free Family Day program has always been one of the Contemporary’s most successful outreach programs,” said Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis Director Paul Ha. “These days enable families to spend a cost-free day together in a creative environment, engaging in art activities.” On Saturday, October 31 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, families are invited to enjoy hands-on art activities while exploring the exhibition For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there. The afternoon will be filled with opportunities for families to create art together while learning about contemporary art. Activities include face painting, decorating black cat masks, and working together to create a life-sized haunted house scene. Children are welcome to come in costume to celebrate Halloween. Every child in costume will be entered in a raffle to receive a special prize! Free Family Days are designed to provide families and children of all ages with fun-filled opportunities to learn about contemporary art. Many of the opportunities are collaborative in nature and provide a vehicle for families to create art together. “Unbeatable!” Musical puts breast cancer in a new light By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Most people probably don’t think breast cancer to be a topic to sing and dance about. One lady, Tracy Boyd, does. She has taken her experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer, the process of treatment along with how cancer changed her life and turned it into a musical to show how she dealt with it. There are probably a million opportunities to hear about breast cancer, which still aren’t enough when women are not getting needed testing to allow for early detection, but none are maybe as creative as “Unbeatable!” “Unbeatable!” is Tracy Boyd’s story with original dialogue and songs that put a real face on what a malignant diagnosis can mean. A blend of comedy, drama, tears, laughter, and a lot of thought provoking realism, the show takes you through the transformation that she experienced. The first act opens with Boyd, played by Kristy Cates, leading her multitasking life, burning the candle at both ends, trying to meet everyone’s needs and attempting to balance life. She then gets the phone call that changes everything when the hospital notifies her about the results from a needle biopsy. The show then goes into scenes
from past to present taking the audience on a roller coaster ride as Boyd explores how her perspective of living differs from those around her. Scenes take you in and out of her relationships with her worried mother, her calm friend Pastor James, her sensitive artist husband, her best friend Ally, and later, her “chemo friends” Ruthie and Natalie – two other breast cancer patients. All of which are surrounded by Boyd confronting her previous view on what life was to her and her new found revelations and what she does with them. “Unbeatable!” began its journey as a reading at Phoenix Theatre’s New Works Festival in August of 2006. After some major changes, including welcoming composers Todd Schroeder and Kevin Fisher, the musical was launched. Kristy Cates plays the lead character, Tracy Boyd, which she has already performed in the show’s previews in Phoenix and Houston in 2008. She came to St. Louis after appearing as Elphaba in “Wicked.” Landon Shaw plays Boyd’s husband, Brad. Charity Dawson plays Boyd’s best friend, Ally. Stellie Siteman plays Boyd’s mothera role she was maybe born to play, being the daughter and namesake of her father, Alvin J. Siteman, who the cancer center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University
is named for. John Flack plays Boyd’s friend, Pastor James. Tickets are now on sale for the performance which is hosted by the Westport Playhouse, located at 635 Westport Plaza, in St. Louis. Performances run at different times on Wednesday through Sunday, through Nov. 22. You can purchase tickets by going to www.unbeatablemusical.com and click on the “Purchase Tickets” icon, or by going to www.metrotix.com. For information, call the Playhouse at 314-469-7529. Family Focus When appearance isn’t skin deep NEW YORK (AP) — Lipstick, moisturizer and a wig can’t cure cancer. But beauty — and beauty products — can help heal wounded self-esteem, which often takes a big hit as patients undergo cancer treatment. Experts say hair loss, skin discoloration and skin dryness can undermine an already physically difficult and emotionally draining process. “Some days I didn’t want anyone to see me or even have my husband look at me,” says Michele VonGerichten, a breast-cancer survivor. “When you are waiting for your hair to grow, you spend a lot of time looking into the mirror, just waiting for a sign that you’re going back to normal.” In interviews, survivors and counselors both say the moment a person doesn’t recognize herself in the mirror because of physical c h a n g e s c a u s e d b y t re a t m e n t can be one of the lowest points of the process. VonGerichten says the minute she took charge and regained her beauty routine, her spirits improved. While she hopes never to put on her wig again, she says she’ll also never go back to the very long hair that she had before chemotherapy began last March. Her hair is now “a really short version of the Jamie Lee Curtis cut.”

Dining Delights For Diwali, savory snacks as big as sweets By MICHELE KAYAL Associated Press If you rolled a bit of Christmas, New Year ’s Eve and the Fourth of July all into one, then catered the affair with heaps of sweets and savory snacks, you’d begin to get a taste for what it means to celebrate Diwali, India’s best known festival. The sugary treats known as “mithai” — thousands of tons are prepared for Diwali every year — tend to get most of the attention during this holiday that marks the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. But Indian food is all about balance and contrasts. Salty, spicy snacks collectively referred to as “namkeen” or “karam” play an equally important role during Diwali, which this year falls on Oct. 17. Piquant little diamonds called shankarpali; chili-spiked mixes of flaked rice and lentils called chivda; and crisp, golden noodles called ribbon pakoda serve as both munchies and gifts, the latter an element as critical to Diwali as to Christmas. “It’s a time when a lot of family connections and kinship ties are strengthened,” says Sharmila Sen, a humanities editor at Harvard University Press and expert on Indian food. “For women, it’s important that their families send these elaborate presentations of nuts and savories to their husband’s family, thereby strengthening the ties.” The legends behind Diwali — a word taken from the Sanskrit w o rd d i p a v a l i m e a n i n g “ ro w of lights” — vary by region in

Diwali also is a time for visiting f r i e n d s a n d f a m i l y, a n d t h e delicate, time-consuming savories — which are easily made in large quantities — are exchanged between homes. “In one neighborhood you’re going to have 50 or 60 families and you’re going to feed all the immediate neighbors,” says A b r a h a m Va rg h e s e , e x e c u t i v e c h e f a t Wa s h i n g t o n ’ s I n d i q u e H e i g h t s , w h o recalled rolling and cutting shankarpali with his brothers as a child. “We would go to all the homes we knew, and to the poor home.” The treats often are wrapped as colorfully as possible, baled in reds, golds, greens and marigold, the colors of happiness and auspicious beginnings, Sen says. In times past, gifts would be placed on platters and draped in elaborate fabrics. Today, they are more likely to come in wrapping paper that mimics the patterns of those fabrics or in colorful cellophane. Bright cardboard boxes, platters fashioned from dried palm or banana leaves, and clay pots also are used. Occasionally, a silver platter is used to deliver the savories to a very important client or hard-to-please in-laws. The idea of giving savories — as well as sweets — is rooted in the principles of Indian cooking.

Indian cuisine is about balancing taste elements, about playing hot, sour, sweet, salty, bitter, astringent and umami (savory) off one another, says Raghavan Iyer, an award-winning cookbook author and chef at Minneapolis restaurant Om. “With Indian food you have to associate the word ‘balance,’” he says. “So in addition to the sweets, savory does play a big role.” Crisp, spicy snacks serve another crucial function at Diwali. Because they are deepfried, they keep for weeks in airtight containers. Which means a host can always have a big stash on hand to accommodate hungry holiday visitors. “Diwali is all about snacking,” says Sangeetha Sarma, a Washington food publicist who grew up in the South Indian city of Chennai. “It’s the Festival o f L i g h t s , b u t i t ’ s re a l l y l i k e Thanksgiving.” ••• THATTAI Start to finish: 1 hour Servings: 8 4 cups rice flour 1/2 cup urad dal flour (or chickpea flour) 2 tablespoons yellow split peas, soaked in hot water for 10 minutes 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste 2 teaspoons sesame seeds 10 curry leaves, roughly torn (optional) Salt, to taste 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, cut into small pieces 1 1/2 cups water Vegetable or canola oil, for
frying Arrange a large sheet of waxed or parchment paper on the counter near the work area. In a large bowl, combine both flours, the yellow split peas, cayenne, sesame seeds, curry leaves and salt. Using a pastry cutter or 2 knives, cut in the butter. Add ¼ cup of the water and begin making a dough. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture has the consistency of pie crust. Working on the waxed or parchment paper, form the dough into 1inch balls, then use a rolling pin to flatten each into a disc about 1/4 inch thick. Set the discs on
the paper, then use a knife to cut the discs into quarters. Using a fork, prick each piece in several places. In a large, deep skillet over medium, heat about 1 inch of oil. To test the oil, place a small piece of bread it in; it should sizzle. Carefully slip the quarters into the oil. Do not crowd the skillet. Turn them occasionally with a slotted spoon, frying until golden brown. Transfer to paper towels to drain. When completely cool, store in an airtight container. Will keep for several days. Dining Delights OK, we admit these are our opinions and you certainly should form your own, but it is nice to have a guide of places to eat when you are undecided or want to try something new or different. To send us a suggestion of a restaurant to try, e-mail theedge@ edwpub.net 54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full. Cold Stone Creamery Edwardsville 5 stars I really would give this more stars if we had them, but all we can give is five. I LOVE their ice cream concoctions, particularly the Cheesecake Fantasy or the Apple Pie A La Cold Stone. I really could put more selections here, but use your imagination!
Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection of gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads, pastas and more. Great downtown Edwardsville location where you are sure to see someone you know. Bobby’s Frozen Custard Maryville 5 stars Gosh, maybe we just like desserts, but Bobby’s has a following in Madison County that most people know. Great custard, great carmel apples, lots of selections and more. Strawanna and the Bobby’s Turtle are some of the favorite selections. Carisillo’s Mexican Restaurant Collinsville 3 1/2 stars A great selection, similar to LaFonda. Good prices and endless chips and salsa. Service is quick and friendly. Not the fanciest, especially on the outside, but don’t judge a Mexican restaurant by its cover!

but embrace it! Although men look at it as “chick food,” there is something for every taste on their menu. Fantastic soups, sandwiches, bakery items, coffees, teas, salads, and more. Great place to take a laptop or a book and just kick back and sip a cup of java. Bully’s Smokehouse Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars
The food is good at Bully’s, but a little foo-foo for a barbecue place. The prices are a little more than typical barbecue fare. Good for business lunch or dinner and nice servings. El Maguey Mexican Restaurant Edwardsville 3 Stars Good chips and salsa start you off with a nice selection of dishes.
Thank You For Your Loyal Patronage
Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop Edwardsville 4 stars Where sandwiches are concerned, you can hardly beat a good Jimmy John’s. Their Bootlegger Club and The Big John are some of the favorites around here. Their cookies are great also, ask them to heat it up.

Native flowers a boost to your yard's ecosystem
By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press
Flower fanciers have generally forsaken native plants over the years for the fashionable and the flashy, but the robust perennials are quickly becoming garden chic and the center of an ongoing conservation campaign. The handbook of the natural landscape movement may be Douglas Tallamy’s “Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens” (2007, Timber Press), which brings into sharp focus the relationships between plants and wildlife. “Plants generate the food for all the terrestrial life on the planet,” Tallamy, a professor and chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, said in an interview. “Insects and birds are disappearing because we’re starving them with the wrong kinds of plants when we landscape,” he said. It’s understandable that people want new and different kinds of plants for their gardens, but alien species don’t contribute much, if anything, toward the care and feeding of wildlife, he said. “Insects are not adaptable. Their physiology is locked into the plants with which they’ve co-evolved,” Tallamy said. “It’s like the Monarch butterfly gets its nourishment primarily from milkweeds. If we start spraying all the milkweeds, the monarchs can’t simply go off and start feeding on oak trees.” Miriam Goldberger, who with her husband, Paul Jenkins, owns and operates Wildflower Farm Inc. near Coldwater, Ontario, puts it another way: “A lot of my hybridized plants are like junk food compared to the natives. They don’t have much dietary value.” But one person’s wildflower is another person’s weed. Time for some definitions: “Natives” are considered plants indigenous to North America before European settlement. “Weeds” are any plants growing out of place. A “forb” is a wildflower that grows without human involvement. “Naturalized aliens” are plants that have taken hold in certain areas but that should be avoided because they crowd out and contaminate native gene pools. (Queen Anne’s lace, Chicory, Oxeye daisy, are some naturalized aliens.) “Common milkweed is on Ontario’s noxious weeds list, yet several (provincial) departments purchase milkweeds from us to support the Monarchs,” Goldberger said. “This weeds-wildflower debate needs a little more thinking and a little more homework as people

cuttings if you want the fast and easy. Go with seeds if you have large areas to cover. “Remember that these are perennials, so it may take some time to get them going,” said Bill Carter, president of Prairie Moon Nursery near Winona, Minn. “First-year growth (from seed) may not be much at all or very slow in coming. Many of these plants
need two or three years to reach blooming size, but really take off once established.” • Naturalized gardens may look more disheveled than formal flower beds, especially after the flowers fade, but don’t be quick to remove the spent plants. Birds will eat their seeds; insects will shelter in their hollow stalks.

• Shop for wildflowers rather than dig them up. Plants taken from the wild “generally don’t survive,” Goldberger said. “Better to get nursery-grown natives that do well in habitats and hardiness zones matching your own.” • Choose bare-root plants or

More homeowners are turning to stoves
By CARYN ROUSSEAU Associated Press
For 23 years, Julie Gore has heated her Ada, Ohio, home with a wood-burning stove. When the old one wore out, she didn’t hesitate to buy another for her family room. “It’s warm and toasty,” said Gore, an administrative assistant at Ohio Northern University. “I wouldn’t trade it. If you get a chill you can stand by it and warm up.” Stoves as secondary heating sources are growing in popularity, and come in two basic varieties: wood stoves and pellet stoves. Some proponents say the stoves can be more environmentally friendly and help cut energy costs; other experts say that can vary from household to household. Traditional wood-burning stoves like Gore’s enjoy stronger sales, but pellet stoves, which burn com p re s s e d s a w d u s t , m a y b e gaining, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, a manufacturers trade group. Wood stoves and wood fireplace inserts saw an 81 percent increase in shipments in 2008, the association said. Pellet stoves and pellet fireplace inserts increased 161 percent that year. Both kinds of stoves are meant mostly to heat specific rooms or groups of rooms, not entire houses. They cost between $3,000 and $4,500 including installation. The federal government is offering a 30 percent tax rebate in 2009 and 2010 for purchases of wood or pellet stoves that meet a 75 percent efficiency requirement. Wood stoves must be fed with logs, while pellet stoves use 40pound bags of pellets poured into a hopper. Most pellet stove hoppers hold an entire bag of pellets, which will last about 24 hours before needing to be reloaded, said Leslie Wheeler, spokeswoman for the trade association. With pellet stoves, look for a model with a large hopper opening to make it easier to load pellets, and check for an easily removable

ash pan to make cleanup quick, suggested Bob Markovich, the home and yard editor at Consumer Reports magazine, which recently profiled heating stoves. A safety precaution: Homeowners should place carbon monoxide and smoke detectors near the stoves, Markovich advised. Pellet stoves produce very little smoke, giving them a reputation as more environmentally friendly, Wheeler said. “There’s very, very little moisture in that pellet,” she said. “It burns very cleanly, very efficiently and leaves very little ash.” Ken Hellevang, an engineer with the extension service at North Dakota State University, noted of pellet stoves: “Even the most efficient burning units, there’s still ash that needs to be discarded. There’s some labor involved on a daily basis.” Pellet stoves also require electricity, since fans circulate the heat, so it’s a good idea to purchase a backup battery, Wheeler said. Wood-burning stoves don’t need electricity. Markovich of Consumer Reports described all heating stoves as “a large version of an electric, $30 space heater.” “People have this sort of rising desire to be off the grid and control more of their own expenditures,”
he said. “People are looking for any way they can to save.” But if you’re trying to lower home heating bills, Markovich said, you’ll need to turn down the heat in the rest of the home when using a wood or pellet stove. “To really save money, you have to keep the rest of your house colder,” he said. Another tip: Make sure the square footage you want to heat matches the square footage the stove can warm, Markovich said. COST About half of all households nationwide depend on natural gas for heating, according to the federal Energy Information Administration. The agency recently forecast that costs for heating fuels this winter — including natural gas, propane, oil and electric — should all be down. Based on today’s costs, Markovich said, burning pellets costs about 15 percent less than oil and 40 percent less than electric heat, but about 25 percent more than natural gas. “If you’re in fact burning natural gas now, buying a pellet stove is a mistake because it costs more,” he said. Wood stoves can be a bargain for some. “A lot of people are near rural areas where wood is cheap or free,” Markovich said. “If that’s you, that makes financial sense.”
