30 years of Finishing Touches Interior decorators mark anniversary By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Carrie Babington and Bette McCallon were good friends living in Litchfield in 1979. Both had three young children each, enjoyed sewing, had an eye for interior design and wanted to make some extra money. While their children were in school, the two women began painting, hanging wall paper and offering their interior design services to the Litchfield community. Fast forward to 2009 and the two women are both licensed interior decorators and still offering their interior design services but on a much larger scale. They are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their business, The Finishing Touch Home and Office Interiors, LLC, which has been in Edwardsville since 1984. Babington recalled when they decided to move the business to Edwardsville. “We knew that anybody who had an extra $500 or $1,000 in Litchfield were not going to spend it on their house. They were going to spend it on a motorcycle or a boat,” Babington said with a chuckle. “We needed to find some place where people had more expendable income.” After visiting several communities in the area, they decided that Edwardsville “was the place to relocate.” While researching communities to relocate to they met with the Edwardsville Chamber of Commerce which at that time was located in the Berleman House on Main Street. “We said well we’ll fix up the attic if we can use it as our office,” Babington recalled. “We set up a phone system and back then they didn’t have call forwarding on the telephones, but we could buy a call forwarding machine.” During the next couple years, the two women remained Litchfield residents but began building clientele in Edwardsville by marketing in Edwardsville and forwarding customer calls to them in Litchfield from the Berleman House’s attic. By 1987 they had completely moved their business to

Edwardsville and relocated into the Ginger Creek area. By this time they had completely removed themselves from the physical aspect of hanging drapes, painting walls and hanging wallpaper and were focused on interior design and the administrative tasks that come with owning a business. Babington and McCallon worked hard to market their business and offered several designer window covering seminars which were quite popular. “We had them a couple of times a year,” McCallon said. “At one point I remember we had about 70 people attend,” Babington added. “We became specialists in custom window coverings along the way by going to a lot of extra seminars,” McCallon said. As the years passed and the business grew, Babington eventually moved to Edwardsville and they also hired three designers to join their staff. “Mary (Droste) has been with us 22 years. Robin (Neimeyer) has been with us 11 and Diane (Buda) has been with us just two,” Babington said. Buda moved to Edwardsville from California where she owned her own interior design business for several years. “We don’t have anyone that we’d ever send out that has less than 10 years of experience,” McCallon said. In 1997 Babington and McCallon purchased the Victorian home at 415 East Vandalia and moved the business to this new site where it remains today. Having converted the main floor into a seven room furniture and accessory retail showroom, they are able to consult with clients upstairs in the designer resource library and then walk clients downstairs to see, feel and evaluate the possibilities up close. Their offices are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment by calling 692-1574. “We like for people to come in so that we can give them a tour because we think our facility is lovely,” Babington said. “And it’s really representative of all the things that we do.” Clients who visit can easily see that a myriad of resources are at their fingertips. Their extensive library, possibly t h e l a rg e s t i n t h e S t . L o u i s metropolitan area, provides clients with access to almost 400 wallpaper books, thousands of fabric choices and several furniture lines with their own independent fabric choices. They purchase furniture directly from the manufacturers and have the ability to design custom area rugs, custom bedding, and custom window coverings including blinds and shutters. In addition, they provide specs for wood flooring, granite tile and paint colors. Clients who utilize their services r a n g e f ro m t h o s e w h o w a n t complete house makeovers to those who want just a single room. “We can do as much or as little as you want us to do,” Babington said. “We’ll do an in-home consultation up to two hours for $200.” “We have done several houses totally – all new furniture, all new window coverings, all everything and we’ve also done those where we’ve just done a part of a room,” McCallon said. “It’s certainly not everybody who calls you to do everything.” Their goal is simply that when they are done, the space needs to represent the person who lives there. “We have to get inside clients’ heads and find out what they are wanting so that we can help them get there,” McCallon said “We walk away so you have to like it when we walk out the door and it needs to be functional especially
if you have young children,” Babington said. “We don’t want to sell someone silk draperies or silk upholstery fabrics if they have two, 3-year-olds running around and a couple of dogs so we have to take into consideration how people live in that house and how many people live in that house.” Babington pointed out that McCallon had come up with the slogan, “If you care what it looks like in the end, call us in t h e b e g i n n i n g , ” w h i c h re a l l y summarizes how they can best help clients. “Many times people will call us and they’ve gone out and they’ve bought furniture that doesn’t fit the room, isn’t the right color and then they call us wanting us to fix it,” she said. “If they had called us in the beginning they wouldn’t have had to waste the money and they would have gotten what they wanted without the frustration.” McCallon noted that many times they are called upon to provide a plan that ends up being implemented over several years. “If someone says, “Well, I can’t afford to do all of that now,” we show them that this is what you want to do and this is the order in which you need to do it and if you stay on track, you can do it over the course of a year or two years,” she said. “You don’t ever have to back track and throw out something you already purchased. You keep going forward and in the end, you have the room you always wanted.” Another service they offer is pre-construction assistance. If a client is putting an addition onto a home or building a new home, they offer their services during the construction phase. “The client brings in their blueprint and we go
over it with them to see if they have walls big enough to accommodate the furniture they want to bring and what kind of a traffic pattern they have,” McCallon said. “We do all that before the walls go up so if they need to make changes, it’s when it’s on paper instead of when it’s more costly.” New construction services can also include assistance and coordination in helping clients to pick out exterior colors such as the roof, gutters, siding and brick. And for those trying to sell a home, The Finishing Touch can provide assistance in this area too. “We do staging for homes,” Babington said. “We will even take an empty space, and we have the ability to rent furniture and furnish portions of it if they are wanting to sell it.” T h e F i n i s h i n g To u c h H o m e and Office Interiors has a very unique distinction from others in the industry. “We have a lot of knowledge with all the training we’ve had and longevity,” McCallon said. “Besides the knowledge, of course, comes experience, and we have tons of contacts and resources because of the fact that we’ve been in business this long. So if it’s not something that we personally do, we know people who will do the work.” When asked if they ever thought they’d still be doing this after 30 years, Babington said she thought they would but others certainly weren’t so optimistic about their business venture in the beginning. “Everybody thought it would be a whim or a hobby,” she said. “They didn’t realize how serious we were. The banker said we’d never make it. They’re all retired now and we’re still going strong.”

How we manage our resources will have a major effect on the future of life, and there are many lessons to be learned from the past,” said Dr. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” is on display Saturday, May 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Alton Little Theater to present “Don’t Drink the Water”
is pleased to announce the addition of
Alton Little Theater premieres Woody Allen’s comedy farce “Don’t Drink the Water” about a family’s vacation mix-up set behind the iron curtain of the cold war on Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The premise of this well-timed revival is that the Hollander family of New Jersey finds themselves in deep water from the simple act of taking a tourist photograph in the wrong place. Throw in some Espionage, a mad chef, political protestors, a cranky Secret Service chief, some loony Embassy inhabitants, and true love – and you’ve got the makings of a farce worth repeating. “Don’t Drink the Water” is a favorite among community theaters and was first produced at Alton Little Theater in 1970 under the direction of ALT founder, Dorothy Colonius. “Don’t Drink the Water” premieres Nov. 13 through Nov. 22. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Alton Little Theater Showplace located at 2450 N. Henry St., Alton. Two matinees on Sunday, Nov. 15 and Sunday, Nov. 22 begin at 2 p.m. Adult tickets are $14 and student tickets are $6. Group rates are available. Autumn’s Child Mark Holland to take the stage for Arts & Issues By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge A very unique and special night of music with Autumn’s Child featuring Mark Holland is scheduled for the next performance of the 2009-10 SIUE Arts & Issues season. Autumn’s Child will perform its Global Chamber Music – a hybrid blending of jazz, classical, folk and world music which features Holland’s mastery of the Native American flute. In this performance, Holland showcases the versatility of the Native American flute, creating a new acoustic instrumental fusion, an eclectic sound that truly is one of a kind. Native American hoop dance champion Lowery Begay will also perform during the show that begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Morris University Center’s Meridian Ballroom. The evolution of Holland’s Autumn’s Child and his mastery of the Native American flute have been a natural process of simply loving music – in particular, the flute. “Really the flute led me along the way one step at a time. That kind of a process,” Holland said. “The whole flute journey has been kind of neat like that.” As a young child, Holland enjoyed playing brass instruments and taught himself to play the concert flute and silver flute. He said he studied music in college graduating with a B.A. in music from the University of Missouri and “took lessons from a couple members of the St. Louis Symphony on the concert flute.” “I was always into the whole family of flutes,” Holland said. Holland became intrigued with the Native American flute in the ‘90s. “I was just really listening to that sound – a lot on recordings,” he said. “When I came across it, it was kind of love at first sight. There was something very common about the sound and playability of the instrument.” Holland used the techniques he had learned from his silver flute studies to cross over to the Native American flute. “The rest of the learning process I just gleaned by listening and figured out what was going on and all the different techniques that were involved,” Holland said. In 1995 Holland formed Autumn’s Child. “At that point I just wanted to get a guitarist and a percussionist and just really share the uniqueness
November 5, 2009
of the sound,” he said. “It was like this thing has this incredible sound and people need to hear it.” As Autumn’s Child performed at venues around the country, fans would request recordings which led to tapes and then CDs. Eventually Holland began his own label and publishing company, Cedar n Sage Music, in 1997. To date he has recorded 12 CDs and has played on several CDs of other artists as well. Known for his unique soulful style of “playing from the heart,” Holland described his music as “accessible music – accessible to all walks of life and all ages.” “I think that’s really important with the music that I do,” he said. “ I think it kind of sets it apart from other people that use the Native American flute. The melodies I think are easier for people to wrap their heads around, and I think they really grab. They drink it in.” Holland’s music utilizes a variety of instruments that are very unique and interesting. “And how they all work together is very unique,” he said. “I don’t’ know that there’s many people that are into that kind of exploration or experimentation.” Holland ingeniously uses different genres of music: jazz, classical, folk and world music with Native American elements and blends them together. The result is what Holland describes as “Global Chamber Music.” “ I l i k e t o c re a t e m u s i c a n d listen to music that are kind of hard to figure out where to stick it in a record shop – if they were doing that anymore these days,” Holland said. “It’s like where do we categorize that – they don’t really know, and I like that. It’s more about the music than trying to fit into some kind of executive’s decision making process. It’s far beyond that.” T h e N o v. 1 8 p e r f o r m a n c e features some of the country’s best instrumentalists. Holland has arranged for seven other talented musicians to join him on stage to bring an added acoustic instrumental infusion to the performance. The musicians slated to perform with Holland include: Ranya Iqbal, cello; Terri Langerak, harp; Cory Edwards, piano; Billy Engel, guitar; R. Scott Bryan, percussion; Jim Feist, Tabla and N.
For The Edge
Mark Holland Scott Robinson, world percussion. “What’s really cool about the evening is that it’s kind of a retrospective of all of my work through the years,” Holland said. Native American champion hoop dancer Lowery Begay will also perform. “If you’ve never seen a hoop dancer, you have to see it,” Holland said. “If you have seen it, you know what I mean. It’s incredible.” Dressed in colorful regalia, Begay uses a series of hoops, smaller than a typical hula hoop, and spins, twirls and twists them into shapes as he dances. “He’s picking them up with his feet and he gets them going around his legs and his arms and his head and puts them into shapes of different things,” Holland said. “It will be great to have him there because he is a great artist in that art form of dance.” This Arts & Issues performance promises to be a “one of a kind”
experience. “This will be the only time that you’ll get to see these eight musicians and this hoop dancer in one place – ever,” Holland said. “It really is going to be an amazing evening with the amount of talent and diverse instrumentation, and with Lowery’s involvement, it shouldn’t be missed.” Ti c k e t s f o r A u t u m n ’ s C h i l d featuring Mark Holland and other Arts & Issues performances may b e p u rc h a s e d o n l i n e a t w w w. siue.edu/artsandissues/ General a d m i s s i o n i s $ 2 7 , S I U E s t a ff , retirees, alumni or seniors 65 and older are $25 and students are $13. There will also be a performance by noted Native American hoop dancer Lowery Begay. Some of the musicians who will appear in this concert have performed with Sheryl Crow, Paul Winter and the late John Cage.

“Amelia”
Considering the risks Amelia Earhart took, losing her life in the call of aviation, Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair don’t put much on the line in their film biography of the pioneering flyer. This is a biopic on autopilot, providing the facts but not the passions of Earhart’s achievements, her marriage to her promoter (Richard Gere) and her fling with a fellow pilot (Ewan McGregor). Swank’s Earhart repeatedly tells people how she has to fly or die. Yet when she’s in the air, she’s as stiff and closed-off as a passenger stuck in a middle coach seat on a trans-Atlantic flight. As Earhart, Swank exposes what could be her prime limitation: She doesn’t have much range. Swank can tear up the screen in raw street drama such as “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby,” for which she earned Academy Awards. She’s miserably out of her skin as the stately Earhart, though — drab, distant, utterly uninvolving. In choppy fashion, the movie intercuts between Earhart’s doomed last flight around the world in 1937 and the achievements leading up to it over the previous decade — her Atlantic and Pacific crossings, her mentoring of female flyers, her efforts to establish regional passenger shuttle service. Lovely aerial images, lush landscapes and rich sets and costumes are the film’s lone strengths. In almost every other regard, “Amelia” veers off course. RATED: PG for some sensuality, language, thematic elements and smoking. RUNNING TIME: 111 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
“Antichrist”
To say that this film is shocking would suggest that it’s effective. Certainly shocking us is Lars von Trier ’s point — or we can assume it is. Doing so at least gives us something to hold onto when most of the movie seems so maddeningly pointless. The Danish writer-director has said this domestic thriller was the result of working through a bout of depression, a script he wrote as a therapeutic exercise. Watching “Antichrist,” though, that’s hard to believe; so much of it seems so gratuitous, it’s difficult to imagine it would be helpful to anybody, even its creator. Among its imagery: a little boy falling from an open window to his death; graphic, sadistic sex;

bloodied woodland creatures; and genital mutilation. And as it builds to its violent crescendo, it only becomes more hilariously absurd. By now you may have heard about the moment in which an injured fox, lying in the tall grass of a forest, lifts its head and growls out the cryptic warning, “Chaos reigns!” It’s deservedly drawn both laughs and boos, and even become a bit of a catch phrase among film aficionados. As for the story itself, well, it’s pretty dull for the most part. Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg star as a married couple known only as “He” and “She,” pretentiously. Following the death of their young son in a freak accident — which they couldn’t prevent because they were too busy having artfully photographed bathroom sex — they retreat to their cabin in the woods to work through their guilt and grief. This consists of long, achingly empty stretches punctuated by moments of shrill screaming and brute violence. RATED: Not rated but contains graphic violence, gore, sexuality and language. RUNNING TIME: 109 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
“Astro Boy”
A shiny hodgepodge of “Pinocchio,” “WALL-E,” “Oliver Twist,” “Gladiator” and “Superman,” with some obvious visual touches taken from “The Iron Giant.” As its own entity, though, it’s pretty forgettable. Director David Bowers (“Flushed Away”), who co-wrote the script with Timothy Hyde Harris (“Kindergarten Cop,” “Space Jam”), gets some help from a lively voice cast that includes Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Bill Nighy and Nathan Lane, and the Art Deco look of the film’s architecture has a classic appeal. But it almost feels like there are too many movies competing simultaneously in what is essentially a pretty standard tale of good versus evil. The jokes aren’t all that funny and the father-son relationship between Astro Boy (Highmore) and brilliant scientist Dr. Tenma (a typically lethargic and curiously cast Nicolas Cage) isn’t all that heart-tugging. There’s a lot going on, but none of it ever really grabs you. (Along those same innocuous lines, the movie is sufficiently bright and colorful for kids of all ages without ever being too scary.) Based on a Japanese comic book from Osamu Tezuka that began in 1951, “Astro Boy” traces the origin of a young superhero. He began life
as a regular kid named Toby, but after dying in a freak lab accident, his father brings him back to life as a robot containing Toby’s personality and memories (as well as some tricky gadgets and powers that are never explained). Once Dr. Tenma realizes this robot version of his child is inferior and ends him away, Toby flees the floating, gleaming Metro City and lands back on the now-trashed Earth below, where he becomes known as Astro Boy. PG for some action and peril, and brief mild language. 90 min. Two stars out of four.
“Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant”
It’s getting downright batty trying to keep all these vampires straight. The latest entry to the overcrowded trend is “Cirque du Freak,” adapted from a 12-book series, and with quixotic dreams of a movie franchise of its own. The film characterizes itself from other vampire fare in its outlandishness. Here, vampire are no longer enough; we now get a freak show complete with a bearded Salma Hayek, a super-tall Ken Watanabe and a vampire John C. Reilly. Two high school kids (Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson) stumble upon the group. With remarkably little thought, they cast their lot as vampires, each taking different sides in the war between vampires (who merely sedate their prey) and vampaneze (who kill). Reilly (a fine actor out of place here) takes being a vampire seriously, but his best bits are his amusing scoffing at conventional vampire traits. He pronounces, “Vampires don’t need cell phones!” Director Paul Weitz (“In Good Company,” “About a Boy”) should have known that’s what this should have been: an out-anout comedy. Instead, “Cirque du Freak” might be the single most overstuffed film of the year: a high school film crossed with a vampire film crossed with a mutant film crossed with Willem Dafoe cameos. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of intense supernatural violence and action, disturbing images, thematic elements and some language. RUNNING TIME: 108 min. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

The first section is in slow motion and black-and-white, with the water from the shower paralleling the snow falling outside, and Dafoe’s face contorted in ecstasy just as the child’s face reflects his fear as he tumbles to his death. Gorgeous as this prologue is — the work of Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who also shot
von Trier’s experimental “Dogville” and “Manderlay” — it’s also so self-consciously artsy, it keeps the audience at arm’s length. (And that’s coming from someone who watched it at 37 weeks pregnant with her first child — a boy.) Once the couple heads into the woods, “Antichrist” shifts to soft, intimate color for the next three chapters, titled “Pain,” ‘’Grief” and “Despair.” He insists they go to their remote, rustic cabin because
it’s the place She fears the most, and it just happens to be named “Eden” with great biblical portentousness. “Eden.” And He is a therapist, so clearly he knows what he’s doing. Turns out, He didn’t really know his wife very well at all — or her ability to afflict gross bodily harm using items from the tool shed. “Antichrist” will do nothing to quell the accusations of misogyny that have long been leveled against von Trier; the breakdown She suffers
seems intended to titillate, nothing more. D a f o e a n d G a i n s b o u rg d o dig deep for these mentally and physically rigorous roles, so you have to give them some credit for finding the fearlessness to go to such dark places. A treat awaits Michael Jackson fans By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge To say I had my doubts about the brand new concert film/documentary “This Is It,” is to put it mildly. The media circus, as America affectionately calls it, has never been more appropriate than when it covered Michael Jackson, the legendary entertainer beloved by millions of fans the world over. The movie has, by some accounts, been rushed into theatres as a result of the star’s untimely death due to a combination of prescription medications and his failing health, but I disagree. Director/ choreographer Kenny Ortega had obviously been prepping all along for something similar as evidenced by the cameras that followed every minute of rehearsal, set constructions, and the audition processes. Ortega is a long-time friend of Jackson and a perfect forceful companion for the King of

RATED: PG for some suggestive choreography and scary images. RUNNING TIME: 115 minutes. ROBERT’S RANKING: two and a half stars out of four. Pop who was, no surprises, somewhat of a diva. Four credited editors must have worked tirelessly to combine miles of footage into a surprisingly polished experience a mere four months after cable news channels relentlessly covered Jackson’s June 25th death. “This Is It” covers the weeks and months of vocal preparation, sound checks, and lighting and pyrotechnic testing that were going into 50 sold-out concerts that Jackson was to have performed in London
in July. The most disappointing part of the missed dates, other than the performer ’s death, is how cool these concerts would have been. The crescent-shaped stage included elevators, moving lifts, a fortified wall of flame cannons, an enormous 3-D video monitor, and more fireworks than any good 4th of July celebration. Perhaps the most elaborate parts incorporated Michael himself into video montages. This includes a cabaret scene where he is in the audience watching the incomparable Rita Hayworth perform her legendary rendition of “Put the Blame on Mame” from 1946’s Gilda. That’s an impressive display of celebrity power, in my estimation. There is no hiding the fact that this isn’t necessarily a movie about Michael Jackson. It covers none of his early fame, either as a part of the Jackson 5 or as a solo artist. His tragic end is only hinted at and surely not shown or discussed. The creepy personal
side that made him a larger than life eccentric is clearly on display, but none of it panders to an audience member hunting out the train wreck mess we’d come to expect after some of the more notorious (i.e. baby dangling and/or molestation defending) episodes of the 1990s. Every interview of any one the numerous crew members or score of musicians, dancers, and singers was nothing short of 100 percent positive toward both the project and the man himself. Would I recommend this show to the casual moviegoer? Probably not, but any fan of Michael Jackson would appreciate everything that goes on within it. I am the first to admit that his music, a lot before my time, was never my cup of tea. Many of the songs aren’t as polished as they would be in an actual concert setting, but the duet of the ballad “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” was still amazing...enough so to always wonder what might have been.

Celebrity Cruises introduces new seminars, activities NEW YORK (AP) — Celebrity Cruises is introducing a new program of enrichment seminars and activities on its ships called “Celebrity Life: Savor, discover, renew.” Starting in November, new culinary experiences, learning opportunities, fitness classes and spa treatments will be offered on eight Celebrity ships. Some will be fee-based, like acupuncture and Botox treatments, a “boot camp” fitness class, and a “Chillates” class that is described as more laid-back than traditional Pilates workouts. Other activities will be free, like scrapbooking workshops, stargazing parties and seminars on history, art, culture and architecture. Some of those seminars will be led by Smithsonian Journeys, the educational travel program of the Smithsonian Institution. “Let’s Dance” programs will offer free themed nights ranging from Latin music to the ’60s. “In The Heights” It’s won a Tony, it’s won a Grammy and now it’s coming to the Fox By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge “In The Heights,” winner of four 2008 Tony Awards and the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, will come to the Fabulous Fox Theatre Nov. 10 through Nov. 22. “In The Heights” tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. Located in northernmost Manhattan, Washington Heights is bounded to the south by 155th Street as Usnavi sings in the show’s opening number, “You must take the A train even farther than Harlem” – and continues on to Dyckman Street (200th Street), where Inwood begins. Miranda actually grew up in Inwood, but spent almost as much time in Washington Heights. The two neighborhoods are often thought of as one. Perhaps the best known area in Washington Heights is Fort Tryon Park, one of the city’s great oasis. In addition to its beautiful grounds and spectacular views unlike anywhere else in the city, the park is home to the Cloisters, a reconstructed
monastery that houses most of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s medieval works. The other great green space in the area is Inwood Hill Park, which includes the last natural forest and salt marsh in Manhattan. All of this is the setting of “In the Heights,” with a book by Quiara Alegria Huedes, direction by Thomas Kail, and choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. The musical opened on Broadway to wide critical acclaim in March, 2008. It is produced by Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller, Jill Furman Willis, Sander Jacobs, Robyn Goodman/Walt Grossman, Peter Fine and Sonny Everett/Mike Skipper. The show will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre Nov. 10 through Nov. 22. Performances are Tuesday through Friday evenings at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sunday Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. There is also weekday matinee on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. Ticket prices range from $26 to $68 and are subject to change. For current prices, visit www.fabulousfox.com. Tickets are available at the Fox box office, all MetroTix outlets, or online at www.metrotix.com or by phone at 314-534-1111. Groups of 20 or more can call 314-535-2900. “In The Heights” is a U.S. Bank Broadway Series presentation and sponsored by American Airlines. Artistic adventures Steven Wright will bring laughs to the Touhill A c a d e m y Aw a r d - w i n n i n g , Grammy-nominated comedian, actor and writer Steven Wright will take the stage at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Nov. 14. Show time is 8 p.m. in the AnheuserBusch Performance Hall. Known for his dry wit and philosophical jokes, Steven Wright is a thinking person’s comedian spewing such one-liners as, “You can’t have everything…where would you put it?” and “What’s another word for Thesaurus?” It was that now trademark wit that won him the attention of the The Tonight Show’s producer and earned him his first appearance in 1982. He so impressed host Johnny Carson and the studio audience that Wright was brought back less than a week later. And he soon became a regular guest on the late-night talk show circuit. His off-center style also won him roles in 18 films, including “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Mixed Nuts,” “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” and other memorable parts including the unseen radio voice in Reservoir Dogs and a psychiatrist in Natural Born Killesr. Tickets for Steven Wright are $75 (Gold Circle), $45 and $30. They are available now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill.org; or by phone at 314.516.4949. Family Focus Nightclubs proclaiming skinny is out LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Move over, it’s Saturday night at Club Bounce and people are bouncing onto the dance floor in a big, big way. These are big, big people, all dressed to the nines and many tipping the scales at 250, maybe 300 pounds. That’s because this expansive nightclub a couple blocks from the Pacific Ocean, with its flashing lights, friendly atmosphere and wall-rattling hip-hop sounds, caters specifically to fat people. That’s right, fat people. Not just any fat people, either, but fat people who are proud to call themselves fat people. People who joke that they are part of the new Fat is Phat movement. “Self-conscious? No! Not at all,” laughs Monique Lopez, a curvaceous woman of 23 as she arrives in a tight, black dress and heels. “I was like, ’I’m going to Club Bounce tonight. I’m going to wear my shortest skirt.”’ (Which she did.) The movement for equal rights for plus-sized people is nothing new of course. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, with chapters around the country, was founded 40 years ago. A nonprofit group, it advocates that everyone be treated equally regardless of size, arguing that we don’t live in a one-size-fits-all world. But what has been slower coming, fat advocates say, are places like Club Bounce, where people who might have some trouble getting past the velvet ropes at other night spots because of their size are made to feel like they fit right in. “When you’re not what they consider ideal, you know, and you’re out there trying to get your dance on at those other places, you get the looks, the stares. But not here. Everything’s accepted here,” says Vanessa Gray of Long Beach, an attractive 30-something woman who acknowledges jovially that after giving birth to three children, “I’ve got a little more meat on my bones.” Such clubs are still a relatively new phenomenon, however, with a handful scattered across California, mainly in coastal cities from San Diego to San Francisco. “The whole thing really started on the Internet, with clubhouse parties organized online,” says Kathleen Divine, who runs another Southern California plus-size club, the Butterfly Lounge. “Now you see a lot more large people out in public, not hiding behind their keyboards anymore.” A Web site for “big beautiful women” (bbwnetwork.com ) sponsors an annual “Vegas Bash,” for example, and there are similar gatherings in cities like Atlanta and Seattle. But veteran fat activist Lynn McAfe of the Council On Size and
November 5, 2009
Weight Discrimination would like to see more clubs. “It’s nice to have a place to go where you can do a little flirting and maybe bring your thin sister or somebody from work who isn’t fat, and they’ll be in your world for awhile,” says McAfe, a pioneer of the fat advocacy movement.
“That’s an amazing experience for a lot of people who aren’t fat, to spend a day or night in a world of fat people.” Not that every large person prefers to be called fat, especially by someone who isn’t. Lisa Marie Garbo, who opened Club Bounce five years ago, says
she prefers plus-sized or largerframed.
“But I don’t think fat is a bad word anymore,” she adds.

South-of-the-Border Dressing This hot spicy dressing is a good match for a Mexican dinner, and is perfect on a taco salad. Makes 1-1/2 cups * Food processor 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup buttermilk 1 / 2 c u p m a y o n n a i s e ( s t o re bought, or Traditional Mayonnaise, page 106) 1 avocado 2 teaspoons fresh dill 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, drained In a food processor fitted with a metal blade, process cream cheese, buttermilk, mayonnaise, avocado, dill, lemon juice, and chipotle peppers until smooth, about 45 seconds.
Tip Make sure your avocado is ripe for the best flavor and texture. Garden Fresh Pesto Sauce If you’re lucky enough to have fresh basil growing in your garden, this recipe is the perfect way to use it. Serve over pasta with cut-up pieces of chicken. Makes 1 1/2 cups Food processor 6 oz. Parmesan cheese, cut into chunks 2 cups tightly packed fresh basil leaves 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, divided 8 sprigs Italian flat leaf parsley 4 cloves garlic pinch salt pinch freshly ground black pepper 1. In a food processor fitted with a metal blade with motor running, add Parmesan through feed tube and process until grated. Transfer to a bowl. Set aside. 2. In same work bowl fitted with
a metal blade, process basil leaves, 1/2 cup of the oil, parsley and garlic until finely chopped, about 30 seconds. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Add remaining oil and the Parmesan and pulse until well blended, 2 to 3 seconds. 4. If not using immediately, scrape pesto into a jar or plastic container. Top with 1/4 olive oil, cover and refrigerate for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 1 year. Place in the refrigerator for 1 day to defrost. Tip: Basil and parsley need to be washed well to remove all sand and dirt. Be sure to dry them well. If the basil and parsley are not dried completely, the pesto will have a watered-down taste. I like to use an herb spinner to get out the excess water. Variation: For a nutty taste, add 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts when you pulse the pesto for the last time. Kansas City BBQ Sauce 1 1/4 cups Country Ketchup
(recipe in book) or use store-bought 1 cup water 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar 2 tbsp liquid honey 1 tbsp onion powder 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp ground allspice 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine ketchup, water vinegar, brown sugar, honey, onion power, garlic powder, black pepper, allspice, cayenne and nutmeg and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until reduced by half, about 20 minutes. The book is published by Robert Rose Inc. 500 Best Sauces, Salad Dressings, Marinades and More is available for purchase from www.amazon.com, ecookbooks.com, www.cooking. com, fireflybooks.com and most other book outlets.

Dining Delights New books will get you in the baking mood NEW YORK (AP) – Colder weather is an invitation to turn the oven on and start baking. Eight new books about baking offer recipes for everything from warm bread to trays of crunchy cookies; cakes five layers high or in a loaf; plus pies, tarts and popovers. CAKES, COOKIES AND PIES • “Cake Keeper Cakes” offers 100 recipes for honest-to-goodness everyday cakes, the kind meant to be kept on the counter under a plain glass dome. Author Lauren Chattman’s recipe for Cinnamon Pudding Cake and Almond Brown Butter Cake conjure winter days and warm milk. Pear Cake with Sea Salt Caramel Sauce appears dinnerparty worthy without being fussy. Meanwhile, cakes like Fig and Cornmeal with Pine Nuts or Chocolate Chipotle — a rich buttermilk loaf with a subtle, smoky kick — strike just the right balance between comfort and sophistication. Make no mistake: these are not quick cakes. They are simply simple cakes, no frosting, no flower cut-outs, no intimidation. (Laura Chattman’s “Cake Keeper Cakes,” Taunton Press, 2009) • If Chattman gives us grown-up cakes, “Birthday Cakes for Kids” is a one-stop shop for over-the-top creations sure to please any 6-yearold. Recipes go from relatively simple “Ice Cream” Cupcakes served in cones, to bunnies, dinosaurs, tractors, train sets and carousels. Yet author Annie Rigg has made it seem simple. Basic recipes for yellow cake and buttercream serve as the base for many recipes, and step-by-step instructions (and diagrams!) for cutting patterns, piping decorations and using food coloring guide the determined parent. The “Fantastic Chocolate Cake,” a three-tiered chocolate buttermilk extravaganza stacked like a wedding cake and frosted with rich buttercream, lives up to its name. (Annie Rigg’s “Birthday Cakes for Kids,” Ryland, Peters & Small, 2009) • And then there’s pie. Mythologized and elusive, the perfect pie stands as some bakers’ Holy Grail. “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies,” with recipes from Staunton, Va.’s “Pie Lady,” offers a primer that will launch beginners and inspire experts. Six varieties of crust — from plain to vinegar to cookie crumb — form the base for more than 50 different pies. Five kinds of apple pie alone front the section on fruit pies, followed by extravagant delights like Mrs. Brown’s Grape Pie, heaped with Concord grapes and topped with sweet cream, and Damson Plum Pie, full of nothing but plums, sugar and butter. Of course, Southern favorites like Sweet Potato Pie, Coconut Cream, and Pecan Pie get their space, but specialties like Green Tomato

Mincemeat Pie and Watermelon Pie are even more intriguing. (Mollie Cox Bryan and Mrs. Rowe’s Restaurant and Bakery’s “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies” Ten Speed Press, 2009) • Even people who love to bake often find themselves short on time to do it. Enter “The Ultimate Shortcut Cookie Book.” Like the Cake Mix Doctor books before it, this handy v o l u m e u p s c a l e s re f r i g e r a t e d dough and cake mixes with butter, chocolate chips, oatmeal, fruit and other “from-scratch” ingredients. The 745 recipes for drop cookies, fancy cookies, bars, brownies and frostings presented in easy-to-read broad type are appealing and wellsuited for kids to help. Almond Joyfuls boost prepared sugar cookie dough with coconut, almonds and chocolate chips. More exotic treats like Blackberry Sage Thumbprints and spicy ChocolateFilled Aztec Cookies aim beyond the chewy, gooey kid-friendly cookies at a more adult palate. (Camilla V. Saulsbury’s “The Ultimate Shortcut Cookie Book,” Sourcebooks, 2009) GENERAL BAKING • The title says it all. “Baking” by award-winning author and cooking instructor James Peterson delivers 350 recipes and techniques for achieving the craft’s fundamentals: tender pie crust, bread with a proper rise, evenly set cakes, sufficiently airy mousses. Peterson takes an academic approach, for instance, announcing
in the cake chapter that there are only six types of cake — sponge, butter, oil-based, yeasted, meringuebased, custard — and mastering them is key. Peterson offers the same comprehensive instructional approach to pies and pastries,
cookies, breads and custards. More than 1,500 photos accompany the text, making it all seem doable. A volume for serious bakers, or those who want to be. (James Peterson’s “Baking,” Ten Speed Press, 2009) • “The Craft of Baking” is as

inspiring as Peterson’s tome is academic. This is the first book from Karen DeMasco, the award-winning pastry chef behind Tom Colicchio’s “craft” and other restaurants. She folds pure ingredients and a simple approach into exciting, unusual recipes.

Fall decorating relies heavily on vegetables By DEAN FOSDICK Associated Press
Fall is a busy time for decorating, second only to Christmas, and the period when vegetables are valued more for their beauty than their flavor. Back when America was largely rural, bringing in the harvest was cause for celebration. Corn stalks were bundled into “fodder shocks” — stalks, ears, tassels and all — and stacked upright around light poles and near entries, and fed to livestock. Then came Halloween pumpkins, and Thanksgiving with its fresh fruit and colorful gourds gracing dining room tables. “We don’t just decorate for Halloween anymore but for the entire fall season,” said Amanda Sears, an extension agent with the University of Kentucky’s Department of Horticulture. Many farmers and roadside retailers make financial hay selling multicolored ears of Indian corn, pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and straw bales for home decorating. “We have some commercial growers in Nebraska who started with gourds and have expanded into Indian corn and little straw bales — the whole package,” said Dale Lindgren, a plant-breeding specialist with the University of NebraskaLincoln. Such “ornamentals” are sold to big-box stores as well as farmers’ markets. The top three items used in fall decorating are pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn, said Brad Bergefurd, an Ohio State University horticu l t u r i s t w h o re s e a rc h e s ornamental corn as a niche crop for area farmers. “Back 20 or more years ago when I was raising it on my own farm, ornamental corn was pretty blah,”
Bergefurd said. “But there have been a lot of advances from crossbreeding the old varieties. Ears are neater now with better sizes and shapes. More colors are available. More people are raising and selling it, so it’s easier to find.” Indian corn also is called calico corn, flint corn and maize. Its colors range from red and maroon to cream and black. “Consumers don’t want just one or two colors but as many as they can get,” Bergefurd said. “I’m fond of the pinks and blues. You also can get ears with kernels in red and green and white — traditional Christmas colors.” Most varieties aren’t eaten, although some can be ground into flour or meal, and others, mostly miniatures, can be used as popcorn. “It’s pretty starchy once it matures, and doesn’t have much taste,” Bergefurd said. Indian corn usually is offered in bundles of three or more ears; figure on paying anywhere from $3 to $5 per bundle. “In some cases, it’s sold stalk and all,” Bergefurd said. “Growers bundle 12 to 20 stalks, pull back the husks, and with the ears showing, it makes a pretty arrangement. More and more of the breeders are working on stalk coloration, too — mainly red — to make the displays even more colorful.” One trend is integrating Indian corn, gourds, pumpkins and squash with ornamental plants still in the ground, said Lindgren. “Don’t forget to work the landscape into your fall decorating,” he said. “Things like peppers and kales can be blended i n t o f l o w e r g a rd e n s . T h e y ’ re absolutely gorgeous.” Lindgren said people are getting more imaginative in using ornamentals.

Lighting techniques that are on track and budget Out of sight = clean design
(ARA) - If the mortgage crisis has you staying put for a few more years, there’s an easy way to enhance your home’s decor while adding value. Upgrading your recessed lighting or installing a track lighting system can brighten up any room and make your space appear larger. This is not the track lighting from the 1960s and ’70s – those clunky and chunky fixtures in black or white that became hallmarks of contemporary i n t e r i o r s . N o w t h e re a re a l o t more choices: Track heads are smaller in size, available in traditional styles and offered in a variety of finishes including b ru s h e d n i c k e l a n d b ro n z e t o coordinate with appliances and hardware. These same metallic finishes are also popular in recessed lighting trims for the same reason, according to Shelley Wang, president of WAC Lighting. Besides coordinating seamlessly w i t h d e c o r, t o d a y ’ s t r a c k a n d recessed fixtures provide s u p r e m e v e r s a t i l i t y. T h e s e l i g h t i n g p ro d u c t s c o m e t o t h e rescue when space configurations make it tough to illuminate all areas. Out of sight = clean design “Recessed fixtures are generally preferred for general lighting in almost any room of the house,” notes Joe-Rey Barreau, education consultant for the American Lighting Association (ALA) and a n a s s o c i a t e p ro f e s s o r a t t h e University of Kentucky’s School of Interior Design. Wang agrees, adding, “They are perfect for illuminating otherwise dark spaces where portables and direct-mount fixtures have limited capabilities and would visually clutter the design.” Recessed lights offer flexibility in that they can be individually a i m e d , a c c o r d i n g t o Wa n g . “Square downlights in singles

and multiples are a great linear look that was first made popular in retail and architectural spaces, but are now found regularly in high-end homes,” she explains. “Trimless recessed lights ensure that nothing protrudes below the ceiling plane, giving a minimalist look.” Homeowners can rely on recessed not only when illuminating hallways and kitchens, but also to supplement o t h e r l i g h t s o u rc e s i n f a m i l y rooms and bedrooms. Glenn Siegel, marketing director for Cooper Lighting, has observed two growing trends: an increase in finish choices and a preference for recessed, square shapes for an architectural look. “In both Halo’s recessed and track lines, we now provide u p d a t e d metallic finishes that range from Aluminum Haze, Satin Nickel, and Tuscan Bronze to Antique Copper,” says Siegel. To save on energy, plus limit awkward bulb changes on the ceiling, consumers can buy compact fluorescent bulbs s u i t a b l e f o r re c e s s e d f i x t u re s . Placing the lights on a dimmer will further cut electrical costs and allow the user to vary the levels of light to create ambiance. Several lighting manufacturers are now offering LED-powered re c e s s e d f i x t u re s a n d h a n g i n g pendants suspended from track
for even greater energy savings over time. W h e re t o u s e t o d a y ’ s t r a c k stars “Almost any room in the house is a candidate for a track system,” Rey-Barreau says. Once relegated to applications such as hallways, recreation and family rooms, and basements, track lighting is now being employed in dining rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. “ Tr a c k l i g h t i n g h a s c h a n g e d from a mundane product category into one that is design-conscious a n d e x t re m e l y f l e x i b l e , ” R e y B a r re a u s t a t e s . T h e v a r i e t y o f fixture styles and lamping choices are diversified and available in an array of bulb options. “One of my favorite applications is in renovation projects where the lighting placement is limited by the location of electrical service in the ceiling. Since the track allows for multiple fixtures in a linear configuration, it is possible to provide electricity to the track in one spot while allowing the f i x t u re s o n t h e t r a c k t o re a c h many parts of the room,” ReyBarreau says. “Tons of homes are built with one junction box in the ceiling, but the residents want to update the space to incorporate general, accent and task lighting,” Wang concurs. “If recessed lighting is not feasible without lowering the
ceiling height, a track system is a nice alternative. I faced this issue inside my pre-war New York City apartment and the track solution came out great.” Tr a c k s y s t e m s h a v e e v o l v e d into highly decorative and functional lighting solutions. “The most common type is the monorail, which contains a single rail of electrified cable that can be installed either in straight runs or can be bent in the field for custom designs,” Rey-Barreau notes. The monorail provides the greatest flexibility and has an almost unlimited range of fixture options. With these new systems, the track becomes very much a part of the room’s overall aesthetics. “One of the advantages of the monorail is that you can attach both pendants and accent fixtures o n i t , ” R e y - B a r re a u e x p l a i n s . “Therefore, in a location such as a peninsula in a kitchen or a basement bar, you can place pendants above the work surface while creating spot lighting on objects in the room.” Te r r y M c G o w a n , d i r e c t o r
of technology for ALA, also appreciates the monorail’s f l e x i b i l i t y. “ I l i k e t o u s e i t i n dining rooms, even if there’s a suspended fixture over the table. Tr a c k a d d s d o w n l i g h t i n g a n d sparkle to table settings and can also be adjusted to accent sideboards, buffets, wall art, or sculpture,” he comments. “The decorative fixtures can then be dimmed so they’re not glaring.” Siegel has noticed that owners who invest in expensive automobiles are installing lighting systems that showcase their investment. “Using both recessed and track lighting, d e s i g n e r s a re p ro v i d i n g b o t h p ro p e r l i g h t l e v e l s a n d c o l o r temperatures in these residential garages to make the spaces both functional and inviting,” he explains.
