Casey and Shelly Ray with two of their dogs in their new training facility.
Dog trainers adjust to pooch's personalty By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge
C
asey Ray's STL Dog Trainers, the popular St. Louis dog training center, has opened its newest location at 1023 Century Drive in Edwardsville. Owners Casey and Shelly Ray opened the Edwardsville location after moving back to Illinois to be closer to their family roots.
Casey and Shelly have been working together with dogs for a very long time. Casey explained that in the '90s the couple traveled the country showing dogs. “We spent a lot of money on training,” Casey said. “Then we started doing it ourselves, and we got pretty handy with it.” Soon family and friends were asking them to train their dogs, too, and eventually in 2003, Casey said he went to National K-9 Learning Center, a school for dog trainers located in Columbus, Ohio, to become a certified trainer. “It's a well sought after school,” he emphasized. “I went over there and spent some time to get my certifications. There's no state regulation for certification, but a lot of people ask about certification.” Although that was 12 years ago, Casey said that he still learns something new every day because every dog is different and has a different situation. “And now that I'm training trainers a lot more, I find myself finding different things to teach them,” Casey pointed out. “I look back on my (certification) curriculum – I have a notebook with notes – but that's not even really close to what I do anymore. I've taken that and tweaked it to make my own approach.” And Casey Ray's approach obviously is working well. The couple own two other locations in the St. Louis area –one in Ballwin and one in Wildwood. They opened the Edwardsville location in August after moving back to the area to be closer to family. “I'm originally from Mascoutah and she's (Shelly) originally from Hartford. When I got out of the Army
the last time, we knew we were going to open up another dog training place, but we decided to do it on the Illinois side of the river,” Casey said. “We were living in Wildwood. She wanted to come back closer to her mom, and our daughter is over here in Bethalto.” When the couple moved back to Illinois, they decided to put on their Casey Ray's website that they could train dogs now in Illinois. “Before we knew it, we were training dogs in our garage and people were showing up at the house,” Casey said. They quickly knew they needed to find a training location in order to get out of the hot garage in the summer months. That's when they opened the location at Century Drive, but Casey stressed that it's “just a temporary location.” They are currently looking at moving from their current 1,300 square foot location to one nearly 8,000 square feet in size in order to offer boarding and daycare in addition to dog training. Casey Ray's Dog Trainers takes a different approach to training. Casey noted that most people think of dog training as being a group class costing around $150 because that's what the big pet store franchises typically offer. “That's kind of what the mentality is of everyone who thinks of dog training, and just because they created it, it doesn't mean it's right, and it's not right,” Casey said. Casey Ray's dog training doesn't involve group training until the very end of training. Casey Ray's training is all individualized training – especially in the beginning. “When you want a dog to learn you want to do it with minimal distractions,” Casey said. “Everything here starts with one-on-one training. Whether it's private lessons or stay and learns where the dog stays overnight with us or it's day trains where the dog gets dropped off in the mornings and goes home the same evening. But the dogs are going to get that one-on-one experience. And we work with the owners the same way.” Casey also stressed that each dog is different. “There's so many ways to train dogs, and too many people get stuck in doing it the same way,” he said. “Whereas, if you came in and looked at any of our
dogs in training, you might see a different training tool on every different dog. You'll see some dogs with no collars, you'll see a dog with a buckle collar – there's marker training, there's so many different ways of doing it. We try to incorporate what's best for that dog's personality and training that their owners are comfortable with.” Stay-and-learn, where a dog stays overnight for 10 days of training, is one of their most popular programs. “We get the dog done during the day training and then the owner needs to come in and learn how to do everything, but the dog is already trained,” Casey explained. Currently they don't have the space to do stay and learns at the Edwardsville location, but they will once they move into the new location. In the meantime, Casey transports Edwardsville-area dogs to Ballwin for any owner who would like to do the stay and learn. “Our lifetime proof is another popular package,” Casey said. “Once you've done the private lessons, the day trains or the stay-and-learns, you can progress into our group classes which brings in the proofing scenario.” “A lot of places you go to where you receive training once you've done that for six weeks or whatever, you're done. But now all you have is a dog that knows what all of this means, but is he going to do it when you need him to? Most dogs don't until you go through the correctional stage and the proofing stage,” Casey added. Proofing – short for distraction proofing – is training that allows a dog to be offleash without bolting or be unaffected by a darting squirrel. The proofing training can include placing a dog in the middle of the floor on a cot and adding numerous distractions like bouncing balls, food thrown on the floor, other dogs running around or even duck calls to teach the dog not to be distracted by outside influences. “That's reality, but what a dog learns is if mom or dad told me to “place” it doesn't matter what's going on. I better stay up here. That's how you get this kind of reliability out of your dog,” Casey said pointing to one of four dogs just lying
November 5, 2015
calmly, off-leash on cots located around the room. Treadmill training is also another popular and important training Casey Ray's offers. With the area's extremely hot summers and frigid winters, dogs may not get as much exercise as they need. “A dog that is not properly exercised, frustration sets in and comes in all kinds of nasty issues,” Casey said. “Aggression is a dog that's frustrated or dogs that bolt out the door, dogs that dig, dogs that chew up stuff – they are just getting rid of all that energy that owners aren't doing for them.” That's where treadmill training comes into play. Casey stressed that if an owner exercised their dog on the treadmill for just 30 minutes in the morning before going to work, that the dog would be better off. “She's already exercised before you go to work. Now you're leaving her tired instead of anxious which is where separation anxiety comes from. So dogs that haven't been taught how to be alone, if you can wear them out first, it helps quite a bit. If you leave them anxious and all worked up, that's the way they are going to be while you're gone,” he said. “Treadmill training is included in every one of our packages because it's that important.” All of the programs and packages as well as the costs that Casey Ray's STL Dog Trainers offers can be found at www. caseyraystl.com or visit their Facebook page at CaseyRaySTL for photos and comments about their training. Casey Ray's also always offers a free consultation. Their Edwardsville phone number is 6925113. “We're not the cheapest, we're not the most expensive, but you're going to get what you pay for,” Casey stressed. “That's why we have our tag line – we may not be your first stop, but we'll be your last,” Shelly added. “We're just growing at a rapid rate and it's because of our results,” Casey said. “The proof is out there and anyone can look us up and see what people are saying. Our reviews are all over the Internet and Facebook. It's all good reviews – we take that seriously.”

"Room"
Arresting and heartbreaking, wrought with extremes of tension and love, "Room" is as evocative and unforgettable on screen as in the bestselling novel that inspired it. This is the kind of film you never forget you saw. Originally crafted and ingeniously adapted by Emma Donoghue, "Room" burrows itself deep in the mind and becomes a permanent resident. It is a story of the transformative power of childhood innocence and parental love. Tenderly and terrifyingly realized by director Lenny Abrahamson, the film succeeds with quiet camerawork and brilliant performances by its two leads, Brie Larson and 8-yearold breakout talent Jacob Tremblay. Tremblay is Jack, the film's sometime narrator, a little boy who lives with Ma (Larson) in Room: a small, windowless space with gray, soundproof walls. A bed and wooden wardrobe fill one corner; there's also a TV, table, sink and toilet. Jack has never been outside Room's locked door. It's the only place he has ever known, and to him, it's a wonderland. Jack believes Room is all that exists — that trees and dogs and anything else he sees on television is pretend. Ma taught him so. "TV persons are flat and made of colors," Jack says in voiceover. "But me and you are real." For Jack, everything in Room is significant and interesting. Each morning, he greets the sink and wardrobe as though they're friends. Every day, he reads aloud to Ma before they sprint around Room for track practice. On Jack's fifth birthday, they even bake a cake in their tiny toaster oven. He doesn't realize he and Ma are prisoners of Old Nick, the man who knows the code to Room's heavy metal door and comes in at night to make the bed squeak. But now that Jack is five, Ma tells him the truth and plans his escape. For the first half of the film, Room is the only setting. The only people on screen are Jack and Ma. Yet their experiences crackle with energy and intimacy. Larson and Tremblay occupy their characters so completely, their plight becomes painfully real. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for language. RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
"Rock the Kasbah"
Bill Murray is asleep. Or at least he appears to be sleeping when we first meet his character, the down and out music manager Richie Lanz, in "Rock the Kasbah." Holed up in a dingy San Fernando Valley motel room, he's at least half listening to the shrill sounds of a woman singing Maroon 5 and deciding whether or not to sign her. He does, and promptly collects a $1200 fee from his newest client. His other client, Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel, sporting hot pants and smeared eyeliner), who also seems to double as his assistant, scolds him for playing this game and abusing the hopes — and checkbooks — of gullible dreamers. Then he takes Ronnie out to a dive bar and has her sing some cover songs. This is Richie. Swindling some, going to bat for others and never really getting anywhere in the process. It's an inauspicious, and grating, start to the film from "Scrooged" writer Mitch Glazer and "Diner," and "Good Morning, Vietnam" director Barry Levinson. Thankfully, Murray wakes up, and the movie gets a little better, but in sum, "Rock the Kasbah" is a strange mishmash of snark, sincerity, slapstick and glib cultural appropriation that's redeemed in part only by the eternal charisma of Murray. Ronnie doesn't get discovered at the bar, per se, but a drunk guy convinces Richie to take her to Afghanistan to play for the troops. From there, the movie suddenly becomes a mad-cap series of increasingly disparate events as Richie struts and jokes his way through a foreign land after Ronnie absconds

with his money and passport. Within a day of discovering that he's stranded in Kabul for a few weeks, he's inexplicably cruising the city's dangerous streets in a white convertible with some fedora-wearing war profiteers (Danny McBride, Scott Caan) and trading in a Keith Haring watch to bed the region's most popular prostitute (Kate Hudson). Soon enough, he's riding through the desert with Bruce Willis's short-fused mercenary soldier and discussing that time he dated Danielle Steele while on his way to negotiate a weapons sale with the leaders of a tiny village. The movie is half over before Richie finally meets Salima (Leem Lubany), a Pashtun girl with a voice to kill and a penchant for Cat Stevens. He hears her singing "Trouble" while he's out relieving himself one night and decides that getting this girl on "Afghan Star" is his new purpose in life, even though it might mean death for both himself and Salima. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language including sexual references, some drug use and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"Suffragette"
First the bad news: "Suffragette" isn't a Meryl Streep movie, despite what you may have seen in the trailer. She has but a few moments of screen time. And now the good news: It's a Carey Mulligan movie. Mulligan, like Streep, is simply a mesmerizing actress, one who can make even pedestrian material sing with the honesty, sophistication and nuance she brings to every role, on screen or stage (count yourself eternally lucky if you caught her recent Broadway run in "Skylight.") In "Suffragette," which without her would be a far, far less compelling movie, she doesn't merely entertain us with her skill. She brings to vibrant life an important part of our global history that's easy to forget — the struggle for a woman's right to vote. The story of the "suffragettes" in early 20th century Britain may bring to mind the joyously daffy Mrs. Banks singing "Sister Suffragette" in "Mary Poppins." But even though that character spoke jovially of women chaining themselves to wheels or being carried off to prison, "Suffragette" reminds us that the fight involved violence, hunger strikes, bombings, beatings, even death. Though the movie, directed by Sarah Gavron, includes real-life characters like Emmeline Pankhurst (Streep) and Emily Wilding Davison (Natalie Press), who both have tiny but crucial roles, its main character is an amalgam. Maud Watts (Mulligan) is a 24-year-old mother who spends her days working in the same fetid laundry — awful chemicals, brutal hours, sexual abuse from the boss — where her own mother labored. Almost accidentally, Maud falls in with a group of women activists whose fight for the vote is gaining steam — and desperation. A fellow laundry worker is due to testify before a government committee on the issue, but a beating has left her unable to appear, and Maud is drafted. ("Are you a suffragette now?" her husband asks, suspiciously.) Her simple, heartfelt answers move the male lawmakers, but the measure fails. When that defeat is announced publicly, it leads to a melee in which women are beaten by police and dragged to prison, Maud among them. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some intense violence, thematic elements, brief strong language and partial nudity." RUNNING TIME: 106 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Burnt"
The best thing going for Bradley Cooper's character in "Burnt" are his bright blue eyes. His Adam Jones is apparently

a gifted chef, but with his arrogant persona and penchant for loud outbursts, it hardly seems worth finding out, even despite those baby blues. Jones is so unlikeable that spending 100 minutes with him on screen is as unpleasant as languishing over a bad meal — you just want to kind of walk away and find something better. "Burnt" is further hampered by narrative loose ends, clunky, explanatory dialogue, and a love interest (Siena Miller) who behaves as no real woman would. Written by Steven Knight ("Pawn Sacrifice") and directed by John Wells ("August: Osage County"), "Burnt" follows Jones' efforts to restore his cooking career after a bout of bad behavior and return to Michelin Star status. The film opens with the embattled chef shucking oysters in New Orleans. The job is a penance, Cooper's Jones explains in voiceover: He was once a promising young chef with the opportunity to run his mentor's restaurant, only to squander his future with drugs, infidelity and an inflated sense of importance. Now sober and with renewed focus, Jones heads to London to reconnect with former colleagues and strong-arm them into working with him. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for language. RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.
"Brooklyn"
"Brooklyn" is a story for anyone who has ever left home. It's a story for those who've waffled in indecision, for those forming their identities and forging their own paths. It's a story awash in muted pastel nostalgia about family and love and ambition and heritage and goodbyes. And it's one of the loveliest films to grace cinemas this year. There's very little drama in this tale of a young woman, Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), who leaves her small Irish town and her mother and sister in the 1950s to find a life and career in New York. That might make it feel to some like it's not a full movie. We've been trained to expect horrible things to happen to the people we're groomed to love and root for, especially in immigrant tales. Here things are just normal. Eilis is cripplingly homesick at first, but she's not mistreated at work. She doesn't suffer extreme hardships or experience any prejudice for her background or gender. Her family doesn't disown her. Her boyfriend doesn't harbor dark secrets and the priest (Jim Broadbent) who gets her a job, a place to live, and a spot at a night college is actually just there to help and support. If anything, "Brooklyn," based on Colm Tóibín's 2009 novel, challenges the viewer to focus on the heart by not having any such dramatic crutches. Eilis just has to work and figure out what she wants. We meet her first at a dead end job as a shop girl in the tiny town of Enniscorthy, but she's already got a way out. Her sister has made an appeal to an Irish priest living in New York who's agreed to sponsor her trip across the Atlantic and set up a job and housing. Eilis knows it's the only way to get her life started even though she's heartbroken to leave. Ronan, who has proven herself to be one of our most talented ingénues, makes Eilis a leading lady that we usually don't get to see. She's smart and ambitious, but still quiet and reflective. She's polite, but not a pushover. She's good, but not prudish. She's pretty, too, but in an understated way that makes most men overlook her. At a dance early on, one actually sneers in her direction. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality and brief strong language." RUNNING TIME: 111 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

It's here that "Rock the Kashbah's" tone becomes a real problem. The movie wants to be both glib and emotionally resonant, but it can't seem to figure out what the stakes are — even as people are getting shot. When Richie's with the war profiteers and Willis's Bombay Brian, the utlandish caricatures almost work, making the movie feel like a loopy, exaggerated fever-dream with no actual political stance.
"Steve Jobs" has an unfinished feel By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge It was a pretty tragic weekend for movie ticket sales when you narrow down your view to the new titles. “Steve Jobs” expanded to a wide platform after two weeks in limited release and made little fanfare. It did outperform two other movies in dramatic fashion, however. “Rock the Kasbah” (with Bill Murray) and “Jem & the Holograms” (allegedly a similar property to a cartoon from my childhood) debuted with the thirdworst and fourth-worst opening frames for any wide release ever. That’s epically bad. “The Martian” returned to first place, which was nice to see, but I’d already watched that one. Time to check out a little about Mr. Jobs, the legendary
founder of Apple Computers. “Steve Jobs”, at least the fourth film to tell the story of Steve Jobs (Michael Fassbender) and Steve Wozniak (Seth Rogen) and the company they built from a garage operation into a world superpower, is exciting in its own right. The movie is told as a trio of snapshots into very important days in the lives of its central characters, of which Jobs is the front and center for every shot. Annual stockholder meetings and products launches surround the Macintosh computer (1984), NeXT (1988), and iMac (1998) are the structure for the stories, but it’s really all in the telling of what takes place behind the scenes between Jobs, Apple CEO John Scully (Jeff Daniels), marketing guru Joanna Hoffman (Kate Winslet), and a flurry of engineers, underlings, and
hangers-on. Each in their turn is both challenging of Jobs well-known stoicism and domineering style of leadership and supportive of their boss. They really do treat him like the genius he regards himself as. At least until Scully fires him in 1996 from the company he built. And then, later, rehires him in a fit of desperation. As it turns out, brand recognition is as important to stock price as being right was to Steve Jobs. End-to-end hardware may have vilified him in the eyes of computer hobbyists throughout the last decades of his life, but you can’t go anywhere with seeing an iPod, iPhone, or iPad in someone’s hand. Maybe the lone character to under-value Jobs is his estranged g i r l f r i e n d , C h r i s a n n B re n n a n (Katherine Waterson), who spends all of her time lobbying Steve to
acknowledge that paternity of their daughter, Lisa (played at different ages by a trio of actresses). The two found their peace before Jobs passed away in 2011 after his long bout with pancreatic cancer. There was always a loving interplay between the two, based on what we see on-screen, but the firm rejection of shared parentage that Jobs constantly put out like a shield in front of him was stirring and emotionally jarring. Ably directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “Steve Jobs” is at its best during the frantic scenes paced against an unseen but running clock in which screenwriter Aaron Sorkin does his usual high-level work with rapid-fire dialogue between many parties, often all at once. He’s been writing great

sequences like these for so long that his career highs (“A Few Good Men”, “The Social Network”, TV’s “The West Wing”) have gone on to be modern classics. His trademark walk-and-talk goes on here in the wings of lecture halls, behind the scenes in warehouse, and in back of the curtain just of stage of major press conferences. Rogen is a treasure and roles like these serve to remind how underrated as an actor he always has been. The movie belongs to Fassbender, however, and to that end, I have to admit that it falls a little short. The picture, much like the short life of Jobs, feels unfinished and over too soon. “Steve Jobs” runs 122 minutes and is rated R for language. I give this film two stars out of four.

Travel Missiouri Division of Tourism Absolute darkness! That’s what you find in a cave. No matter how long you stare into the void, your eyes can never adjust to cave darkness; it will always be, well— dark. Exploring a cave sound exciting? Make no mistake; caves can be exhilarating, entertaining and educational. The Show-Me State is home to thousands of recorded caves. Although the majority are not open to the general public, there are quite a few “show caves” you can visit in Missouri. M a r v e l C a v e , a R e g i s t e re d Natural Landmark, is deep beneath the Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson. It is the deepest show cave in Missouri and has the largest tourcave entrance room (the Cathedral Room – where five hot air balloons were flown simultaneously) in the U.S. – fifth largest in the world. The cave’s entry room is 204 feet high, 225 feet wide and 411 feet long. Fantastic Caverns, Springfield The most unusual cave tour in Missouri can be taken at Fantastic Caverns in Springfield. This is America’s only ride-thru cave – visitors take the mile-long, 55-minute tour in a Jeep-drawn tram which follows the path of an ancient underground river. Enjoy the beauty of a natural cave without the long walks and steep climbs. Four outstanding show caves are found within Missouri’s State Park system. Onondaga Cave is a National Natural Landmark located in Onondaga Cave State Park, five miles south of Leasburg. The cave has been a tourist attraction since 1897. Trained guides lead you over electrically lighted, paved walkways and provide information about geologic wonders. The State Park itself features Meramec River access, a canoe rental outfitter, camping, scenic hiking trails, a lake, picnic sites and an event shelter. Cathedral Cave, also in Onondaga Cave State Park, offers slightly strenuous, lantern-light tours. After a one-third mile walk to the cave’s entrance, the tour inside the cave lasts an hour and a half. Deep inside Cathedral Cave, you encounter a seismic station monitoring Missouri’s earthquake activity. Fisher Cave is one of more than 40 caves found in Meramec State Park, 10 minutes south of Sullivan. On these lantern-light tours, wellpreserved bear claw marks, cave wildlife and massive columns 30 feet tall are highlights. Situated beside the Meramec River, the park is a favorite with canoeists and fishermen. It features a store, a restaurant, a visitor center, hiking and backpacking trails, cabins, a motel and conference center, canoe and raft rentals and camping. Ozark Caverns conducts tours by hand-held lanterns. In addition to the unique and breathtaking “Angel Showers,” bats, salamanders and interesting cave formations are features of this cave in Lake of the Ozarks State Park, nine miles east of Linn Creek. Established in the mid1930s, Missouri’s largest state park includes 80 miles of shoreline, two swimming beaches, boat-launching areas, marinas, campgrounds and camper-cabins, organized group camps, hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails, fishing and many water sports. Additionally, you may request access to a pair of wild caves in Ha
14
Ha Tonka State Park, 10 minutes west of Camdenton: Island Cave is “entry by permit only”; River Cave is “supervised entry only.” A few organized public tours are scheduled during the summer season. Contact the park’s naturalist for details, schedules and reservations. Operated by the National Park Service, Round Spring Cavern, 16 miles north of Eminence, is a star attraction within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways National Park. Park rangers conduct two-hour tours by lantern-light. Meramec Caverns, Stanton The largest commercial show cave in Missouri, Meramec Caverns, three miles south of Stanton, is reputed to have been used as a hideout by Jesse James and his gang. Regularly scheduled guided tours are conducted along well-lighted

walkways – special tours lighted only by hand-held lanterns are offered by reservation. After you’ve traveled underground at Meramec Caverns, you can soar above the trees, thanks to the on-site Caveman Zipline. Other facilities include a restaurant, a canoe and floating outfitter, a gift shop, a motel and a campground. Scuba enthusiasts have a great opportunity at the world-renowned Roubidoux Spring Cave in Waynesville. The spring’s average daily flow is 37 million gallons, with water temperatures ranging from the upper 40s in winter to the low 60s in summer and fall. Roubidoux Spring is open to all certified cave divers. Smallin Civil War Cave was the first documented cave in the Ozarks. The regular guided tour lasts one hour, traveling one-half mile on
trails that are wheelchair and stroller friendly. For a real adventure, Smallin Cave offers off-the-beatenpath wild cave tours, by reservation. Lit only by the headlamp on your helmet, these treks pass through 54-degree water at least two feet deep and traverse rugged terrain. How about tying the knot inside Bridal Cave? More than 2,200 couples from around the world have exchanged their wedding vows in this stalactite-adorned, natural chapel (advanced planning is required). Regular cave tours are conducted over lighted, concrete pathways. The cave, four miles north of Camdenton, is reachable by road and by water at the Lake of the Ozarks. The Mark Twain Cave Complex, two miles south of Hannibal, is the cave author Mark Twain described in five of his books. Facilities include
a gift shop, a winery, camping and two very different caves, Mark Twain Cave and Cameron Cave. Another unique experience is found in extreme southwest Missouri at Bluff Dwellers Cavern and Browning Museum, two miles south of Noel. Discovered in 1925, the cave has been open for tours every day since 1927. Substantial artifacts were discovered, including arrowheads, grinding stones, tools made of bone and skeletal remains of the early inhabitants, including American Indians; some items date to 5,000 B.C. Here’s a quick look at some other spectacular underground palaces listed on Missouri’s only official state tourism website, VisitMO.com: Current River Cavern at Cave Spring Park, three miles southwest of Van Buren Fantasy World Caverns, five miles south of Eldon Jacob’s Cave, eight miles south of Versailles Miller Cave at Fort Leonard Wood (public welcomed) Talking Rocks Cavern, two miles south of Branson West Finding a cave to tour is an easy task in Missouri. Oh … and all show caves, at some time during their tour, turn off the lights so you can experience absolute darkness. by the Associated Press as “quite simply, a phenomenon.” An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from
“Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” "Mamma Mia!" is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found. "Mamma Mia!" is produced by Work Light Productions, whose other touring productions include American Idiot, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Nice Work If You Can Get It, and Chaplin. The original production of "Mamma Mia!" was produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal, the creative team responsible for bringing "Mamma Mia!" to theatrical life includes some of the most gifted and celebrated talents of musical theatre and opera. Dining Delights
Bill Roseberry/The Edge
Above, a barbecue bologna with cheese served on Texas toast with a side of pub chips from The Frosty Mug in Mount Vernon. Below, the restaurant entrance.
The Frosty Mug Bar and Grill By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge ecently I was looking for a good place to kick back and find some good local eats. Whenever I do that I use Yelp as my tour guide to find the best the area has to offer. After all, I don't have “You Gotta Eat” to steer me in the right direction like you do. I came across a four-star Mount Vernon joint on Yelp that sounded pretty good — The Frosty Mug Bar and Grill. I'll be blunt though, in my opinion Yelp had this one dead wrong. I visited The Frosty Mug at 1113 Salem Rd. with my parents and wasn't too impressed. Established in 1989, The Frosty Mug is a popular spot in Mount Vernon known for its barbecue, most notably its beef brisket. I'll be honest I didn't go with the brisket, deviating from my norm of going with a restaurant's go-to menu item. Fortunately my dad did test out the brisket and was satisfied, but not overjoyed. Dad and I were coming off recent trips to Kansas City and northern Alabama, a couple of barbecue hot spots, so in The Frosty Mug's defense, it's hard to live up to that hype. I went with a couple more obscure menu items due to their uniqueness. I thought they might be diamonds in the rough, but instead they were more like flies in the ointment. For an appetizer I went with the spinach artichoke rangoon, which actually wasn't too bad. They were constructed like pot stickers instead of the traditional rangoon shape. Served with a ranch sauce, they were quite satisfying. There were plenty of spinach and artichoke in every bite. I would recommend them to anyone who visits The Frosty Mug.

My main course though was a different story. Barbecue is the staple at The Frosty Mug, but I didn't want to go with the traditional fare and order brisket, pulled pork, ribs or chicken — instead I went off the radar and picked the barbecue bologna. It was cheap and different and I've had smoked bologna before, its very good. At The Frosty Mug it's seasoned, topped with barbecue sauce and

served on Texas toast. I went the extra step and added cheese. When it arrived the first thing I noticed was the missing cheese. When I waved down my unenthused server and told her, she retreated to the back and brought my plate back a few minutes later with cheese added. The problem, all they did was take a piece of cold American cheese out of the refrigerator and slap it on there.
November 5, 2015
On my first bite I could taste the chill of the unmelted cheese. As for the rest of the unflattering sandwich, it tasted like cheap, store bought barbecue sauce lathered on a piece of bologna heated up in the microwave. The sandwich was accompanied by an order of pub chips which made the dish not a complete waste of time. I don't like being critical of restaurants, they are people working
hard to make a living, but this sandwich was awful and the service wasn't too much better. My mom ordered the cod chunks, which were deep fried pieces of cod fish served with tartar sauce. She complained the whole time and couldn't finish them. The menu is quite large. The appetizer menu includes items like fried pickles, pork rinds, hot wings, cheese sticks and barbecue nachos to name a few. There is a small salad menu with a grilled shrimp salad and a barbecue chicken salad that looked pretty appetizing. As for sandwiches, there's a horseshoe and italian beef and a smoked tenderloin that was appealing. The pork tenderloin was smoked and topped with sweet or spicy barbecue sauce. The dano special sounded good in the entree portion of the menu. It consists of a marinated chicken b re a s t s m o t h e re d i n s a u t e e d onions, peppers mushrooms and topped with monterey cheese. They also have daily drink specials. To learn more, visit www. frostymugbarandgrill.com. As for ambiance, The Frosty Mug is huge, but nothing fancy. It was actually a little dirty. There are old booths and tables for patrons and a large bar area where they had a baseball game on during our visit. The clientele was a hodgepodge of restaurant goers and casual drinkers. It was pretty laid back. Price-wise it wasn't bad. My sandwich was only $5 and the spinach and artichoke rangoon cost $4.50. Even with the large menu and cheap prizes, I'm sorry Mount Vernon, but I don't recommend The Frosty Mug as a place to stop when you gotta eat.
