People Woman's best friend, too Labrador retriever trained to recognize changes in diabetics' condition By JULIA BIGGS jbiggs.edwi@gmail.com Troy resident Sandy Kerr has lived with Type 1 diabetes since the age of 18. A chronic disease that affects the pancreas’s ability to produce insulin, Type 1 diabetes causes a person’s blood-glucose levels to wildly fluctuate which requires constant monitoring. While most diabetics have symptoms that make them aware when their blood-glucose levels dip or rise to dangerous levels, Sandy has a condition called hypoglycemia unawareness which results in her having no symptoms at all when her blood glucose falls dangerously below 70 mg/dl. The results of hypoglycemia unawareness can have devastating consequences, especially if Sandy would happen to be driving or was at home alone at the time. But Sandy has a new friend that never leaves her side and also has been medically trained to recognize when her blood glucose level falls to 70 or below. Sandy’s new friend is Jake, an affectionate yet very focused yellow Labrador retriever re s c u e d o g w h o h a s b e e n t r a i n e d b y Medical Mutts of Indianapolis to be Kerr ’s diabetes alert dog. Sandy’s husband, Jim, said that the primary reason they began doing research and searching for a diabetes alert dog for Sandy was the family’s concern that Sandy could harm herself or others if she experienced hypoglycemia unawareness while she was driving. “I had done a lot of online searching,” Sandy said. “Someone working at Even Chance in St. Louis was very helpful at giving me tips, but she didn’t know of any organizations who could help me locally. So I went to my doctor and asked if he knew anyone. He suggested I call this person at Eli Lilly – the manufacturer of insulin. So I did.” Sandy was connected to Dr. Dana Hardin, an Endocrinologist in Indianapolis with a private practice who also works at Eli Lilly. “She has experience with these dogs and has done and continues to do research. She was very helpful,” Sandy explained. “She came here with her dog, and we had a very nice conversation with her. In talking to her and emailing her, she told me about a Jennifer that she had worked with.” The Jennifer was Jennifer Cattet, owner of Medical Mutts in Indianapolis, who trains medical alert dogs to assist with a variety of medical conditions but specializes in diabetes and seizures. What makes Medical Mutts unique is that Jennifer uses dogs obtained through dog shelters rather than breeders. “We only train shelter dogs. So we don’t have a breeding program. We don’t take puppies. We take the dogs that are about a year to a-year-and-a-half old in which we train them and place them as service dogs,” Jennifer said. “One of the missions that we have is to really promote the idea to the public that there are very valuable dogs in shelters. There are great dogs in shelters, and with the proper training, they can save lives. They can become working dogs.” “I was really impressed with her,” Sandy said about Jennifer after their initial phone call. “We Skyped with her for a long time, and she was able to answer all the questions we had,” Jim added. “We had sort of human interest concerns – what happens if we get the dog, we fall in love with the dog – we’re dog people – we’ve been married 40 years and we’ve had a dog almost all the 40 years – and what if the dog doesn’t work out or the dog doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do?” Sandy was also very concerned about whether this new diabetes alert dog would get along with their own dog, Belle, a 4 year old Great Pyrenees. Based upon their conversations with Jennifer, Sandy and Jim felt confident that
For The Edge
Sandy Kerr with her companion Jake. Jennifer ’s Medical Mutts was exactly what they been searching for. Sandy signed a contract with Jennifer in February, and a few months later Jennifer notified Sandy that she felt she had found the dog for her - Jake. Jennifer, who has trained dogs for about 30 years, explained that finding the right shelter dog can take some time because it must meet several requirements such as a clean bill of health, be very social and have a certain type of personality. “It takes dogs that have a certain level of confidence and the ability to handle all those situations, but we’re also looking for dogs that are kind of clingy. What we call the Velcro dog. And Jake is a perfect example of that. He follows Sandy everywhere. We don’t want those independent dogs that are very comfortable lying 10 feet away from you.” Jennifer felt that shelter dogs happen to have that particular “clingy” quality more than others, unfortunately, because of the trauma of the abandonment. “I’ve always felt that shelter dogs are a little bit more clingy because of what they’ve been through and so that’s what we’re looking for,” Jennifer said. “So it takes a very long time to find the dogs and then to train them takes about six to eight months.” In order to train Jake to recognize when Sandy’s blood-glucose levels were dropping, Sandy provided Jennifer with scent samples of her sweat when her blood-glucose levels were low. She did this by simply swiping her forehead and the back of her neck with a cotton ball during low blood-glucose times. She placed the cotton ball samples individually into plastic baggies, labeled them with blood-glucose readings as well as the date and time, and mailed them to Jennifer to use to train Jake to recognize the scent and alert from that sample. After spending several months training Jake, Jennifer felt Jake was ready to be transferred to Sandy’s care. Sandy traveled to Indianapolis on Labor Day for a full day of training and then Jennifer came to Sandy and Jim’s home for several days that same week to work with Sandy and Jake out in public areas that Sandy frequented in the Edwardsville and metro area. “We went to the St. Clair Mall, and we walked in a number of different department stores,” Sandy said. “Let’s say I was in an emergency, and I could not give Jake commands. Could someone such as an EMT, take the leash and walk with Jake and
take him away. And so we practiced that with sales people. He did it. He was very at ease. So he passed that, too. He’s amazing in what he can do. I can drop the leash, for example, and tell him to give the leash to me. He’ll pick it up and put it in my hand.” They stopped by Schnucks Grocery Store in Edwardsville to see how Jake would handle the shopping carts. “He didn’t get frightened. He stayed calm. It didn’t bother him at all,” Sandy said. “He passed the public access test with flying colors. Jennifer said few dogs get perfect scores on this test and he got a perfect score. And so he did extremely, extremely well – everything I asked him to do, he did.” “I spent a whole week working with them full time,” Jennifer said. “It really is a process. We teach the client how to hold the leash, deliver the treat, give the cues – all of those things. It’s really like learning a new sport. It requires a lot of coordination. And so there’s definitely a learning curve until it becomes second nature and they can work together without even thinking about it anymore.” Jim and Sandy both noted that everyone they’ve encountered so far in their outings has been very kind and that they haven’t had any problems at businesses or restaurants. In fact, Sandy stressed that the employees at Schnucks and Saint Louis Bread Company in Edwardsville were especially kind and offered to help her, which she felt was exceptional customer service. “Service dogs are covered under the American’s Disabilities Act, and Sandy has an identity card that identifies him (Jake) as a service dog and her as a service dog owner,” Jim pointed out in case an establishment ever questions Jake’s presence. Incidentally, Jim also noted that service dog costs are not covered by insurance which was another reason why Medical Mutts was such a blessing for them. Sandy had researched other diabetic alert trainers who use pure bred dogs but those were much more costly. By utilizing shelter dogs, Medical Mutts costs are much less. In addition, being dog lovers, Jim and Sandy also liked the idea that Jennifer was finding homes for dogs who otherwise may never find one. Sandy continues to run Jake through training exercises daily to ensure that Jake doesn’t lose the skills he has learned. She demonstrated one of these exercises which involved Sandy walking out of the room
November 6, 2014
to obtain a low blood-glucose cotton ball scent sample. She placed the cotton ball in her pocket and walked back into the room. Jake immediately stood up and proceeded to nudge Sandy quite forcefully with his nose. “His method of communication is he pokes you with his nose. And he pokes hard so that you don’t confuse it with anything else,” Jim said. “His sense of smell may be millions of times what a human has and it’s also discriminating. He can separate out, for example in a crowd, Sandy’s smell and her blood sugar. He’s able to do that.” Jake provides, as Jim noted, “sort of a liberation” for Sandy. “If something happens to me, she’s capable of living in our home and continuing to live here comfortably without fear of having a low blood sugar because she’s got him,” he said. “And it isn’t just the service he provides,” Sandy added. “It’s the love he provides. He is very affectionate, he follows me everywhere. I’d say we were bonded in 24 hours.” Jim also pointed out how Jake is an example of what the possibilities can be for service dogs. “If you think about children going to school who are Type 1 diabetics or have epilepsy, it would be an educational benefit to everyone in the classroom,” Jim emphasized. “Makes you think how many of these shelter dogs could be providing assistance to elderly people too. These dogs could be taught to call 9-1-1. Think about all the elderly people who would like to be living in their own homes but everyone is worried that something would happen to them. And the thing that they most would like to do is stay where they are already comfortable – in their homes - where they know their neighbors. The dogs make that possible to do.” Sandy and Jake are sure to be seen in and around the Edwardsville area, but Sandy also noted that they would be attending the Lynne F. Solon Foundation’s “Uncorked! A Holiday Wine Experience” from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14. This 5th annual wine and beer tasting fundraiser raises funds which are used to send children to diabetes camps where they learn to live with diabetes. Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased through Eventbrite at http://eventbrite. com/c/uncorked-a-holiday-wine-experiencetickets-13417938415?aff=efbevent or by calling 656-8885 or 659-0197.

People People planner OMNIMAX film captures unseen world
A new giant screen film adventure takes audiences on an extraordinary journey into unseen worlds and hidden dimensions beyond our normal vision to uncover the mysteries of things too fast, too slow, too small or simply invisible. On October 10, 2014, the Saint Louis Science Center’s OMNIMAX® Theater will premiere Mysteries of the Unseen World, an original production by National Geographic Entertainment and Days End P i c t u re s , n a r r a t e d b y F o re s t Whitaker. Created by an awardwinning veteran film team, the new 40-minute large format experience is produced by Jini Durr (“Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric A d v e n t u re ” ) a n d L i s a Tr u i t t (“Mysteries of Egypt”) and directed by Louis Schwartzberg (“Disney Nature: Wings of Life”). Mysteries of the Unseen World uses innovative high-speed and time-lapse photography, electron microscopy, and nanotechnology, to transport audiences to an enthralling secret world of nature, events and breathtaking phenomena not visible to the naked eye. “Mysteries of the Unseen World has that ‘wow’ factor that will impress adults and children,” said Jackie Mollet, Managing Director Visitor Services at the S a i n t L o u i s S c i e n c e C e n t e r. “Seeing these amazing images will give you a new appreciation for the world around us. The technological advances used to capture these images are aweinspiring as well. ” INVISIBLE: We see only a fraction of the millions of wavelengths in the vast electromagnetic spectrum— the rainbow of light waves called visible light. The film shows audiences what it would be life if we had X-ray vision, or infrared vision like a mosquito, how a bee’s eyes see through ultraviolet light, what Gamma rays, microwaves and radio waves show us, and more. TOO SLOW: Ti m e - l a p s e i m a g e s c a p t u r e mundane events that happen too slowly for humans to perceive. The film shows plants creeping toward the sun and astonishingly complex “slime mold” searching for food. On a grander scaled, time-lapse allows audiences to see our planet in motion—from the vast and relentless sweep of nature to the restless movement of humanity. TOO FAST: High-speed cameras do the opposite of time-lapse, revealing secrets from the super-fast world of nature. The film shows slow motion sequences of events that happen too quickly for human perception: a rattlesnake strike; drug cymbals reverberating; a Eurasian Eagle Owl, the world’s largest, flexing its wings; a basilisk or Jesus lizard running on the surface of water; popcorn popping; lightning rising upwards from the ground as well as striking from the sky. TOO SMALL: The film also peers into the world of wonders too small for the human eye to see—from the minute structures on a butterfly’s wing and the tiny organisms
4
that inhabit the human body all the way down to nano-scale s t r u c t u re s . S e e h o w e l e c t ro n microscopes create images that magnify things by as much as a million times—revealing a world that is both bizarre and beautiful. Guess which unusual image is a fruit fly’s eye, the skin of a shark, a flea on a cat, a tomato stem, an eggshell, and more! Mysteries of the Unseen World then moves from the familiar events of everyday life to the building blocks of matter itself. The filmmakers worked with a 3-D medical animation company to depict the atom-scale realm of nano-science and potential innovations in nanotechnology. In a complex zoom sequence, the shot moves in on a spider, then a strand of its silk, then into the silk itself where audiences see a bacterium. The camera then zooms even deeper, in on a virus on the bacterium, then into the DNA of the virus and finally into the actual atoms of the DNA. “Mysteries of the Unseen World immerses audiences in mind-bending dimensions that enhance our understanding of the planet and inspire people with the wonder and possibilities o f s c i e n c e , ” s a i d L i s a Tru i t t , president of National Geographic Entertainment. “The premise of this new giant screen film experience is looking at the world through a variety of
imaging technologies that allow audiences to see beyond what they can with the naked eye and gain a new vision of the world around them,” said producer Jini Durr. Mysteries of the Unseen World is funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation and generous support from Lockheed Martin and FEI, a manufacturer of electron microscopes. Tickets are on sale at the Saint L o u i s S c i e n c e C e n t e r. P l e a s e visit slsc.org or call 314.289.4424 for advanced sales and group reservations.

greatest tracks--from their very first recordings as The High Numbers right up to the present day with the brand new track “Be Lucky”--is being released to coincide with the band’s 50th anniversary tour. The show--described by Pete Townsend as--“Hits, Picks, Mixes and Misses” will see the band play all their classic anthems as well as tackling deeper cuts from their catalog. “This is the beginning of the long goodbye,” says ROGER DALTREY of the upcoming tour. PETE TOWNSHEND commented, “Trying to stay young. Not wearing socks. Growing a great big Woodcutter's beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim. But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we're lucky to be alive and still touring.”

Music Tuning in Fleetwood Mac to appear in St. Louis
Rock legends Fleetwood Mac, who performed two sold-out shows at NYC’s Madison Square Garden earlier this week, have confirmed they will be adding at least 28 more dates to their already scheduled 40-city ON WITH THE SHOW tour. The announcement was made during the band’s live performance this morning on NBC’s TODAY Show where The Mac performed for thousands of adoring fans. The second leg of the tour will begin on Jan. 16, 2015 in St. Paul, Minn. Fleetwood Mac will appear at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Friday, March 27. Tickets available at LiveNation. c o m , t h e F o rd B o x O ff i c e a t Scottrade Center, Ticketmaster Retail Outlets, or charge by phone at 1-800745-3000 Fleetwood Mac is currently performing with their five star lineup including the returning songbird Christine McVie who rejoined the band following a 16 year absence. RECENT REVIEWS FOR FLEETWOOD MAC’S ON WITH THE SHOW TOUR “The principal emotion during the nearly 2 1/2-hour performance was the joy of having keyboardist McVie back in this group... She brought high harmonies and several songs, including 'Little Lies,' 'You Make Loving Fun' and the closing 'Songbird,' back into the repertoire. Nicks hasn’t sounded this good since the early ‘90’s. What a rhythm machine and what an articulate emotional guitarist Buckingham is.” - Minneapolis Star Tribune “It’s still magical. Between Buckingham’s epic guitar solos, Mick Fleetwood’s massive drumming, John McVie’s strong bass work, Nicks’ patented spins to punctuate the lovely 'Gypsy' and Christine McVie’s lush vocals, Fleetwood Mac looked ready to take on what Buckingham has called ‘the next chapter.’” - Newsday **** (four stars) - The Guardian (UK) "Fleetwood Mac has the intricacy, elegance and underlying punch of its songs..." - The New York Times. “With Christine’s songs back in the set, her calm, angular presence back on the stage, there was an undeniable feeling of rejuvenation... Fleetwood and John McVie on bass reminded concert-goers why the band is named for them... They still put a layer of muscle behind everything the band did... Buckingham was ferocious and tireless as lead guitar. This man is a vital musical presence – the soul of the band. Ditto for the vitality of
Nicks, its cauldron-stirring spirit... Her showcase songs, 'Landslide,' 'Gold Dust Woman' and, especially 'Silver Springs,' were the night’s highlights.” - Chicago Tribune “Drum solos can sometimes seem like an endurance test for a rock audience. It’s a rare joy to witness one wherein the drummer seems to experience as much giddy delight as Mick Fleetwood did. He whooped and howled, coaxing the crowd in call-and-response shouts while demonstrating his singular rhythmic sensibility.” - Chicago Sun Times
Sheldon to present Cavatina Duo
The Sheldon and The St. Louis Classical Guitar Society present T h e C a v a t i n a D u o , F r i d a y, November 8, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Combining Spanish passion with Balkan sensibility, the Cavatina Duo has become known for powerful and versatile performances, captivating audiences at numerous festivals and venues across Europe, Asia and the United States. Spanish flutist Eugenia Moliner, acclaimed as “a brilliant young musician” by British Flute Society magazine, and Bosnian guitarist (and husband) Denis Azabagic, winner of eleven international guitar competitions, make up Cavatina Duo. Winners of the “Young Musicians of the Doelen” competition in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 1996, the duo has been called “the best flute and guitar duo in the world today” by Sergio Assad. Moliner performs regularly with pianist Rob Broek and with The New Opus Trio. Azabagic is currently a member of the guitar faculty at the Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University. Their program includes music of J.S. Bach, Fernando Sor and
Toru Takemitsu. Tickets are $30 adult/$26 student and senior, and are on sale now through MetroTix at 314-534-1111, through The Sheldon’s website at TheSheldon.org, or in person at The Fox Theatre Box Office, 534 N. Isbell to appear at the Peabody
Jason Isbell, with special guest Damien Jurado, will appear at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis. Tickets available at the Ford Box Office at Scottrade Center, all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers, by phone at 800-745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com. Southeastern is not a record Jason has made before, and not simply because the glorious storm and drama of his band, the 400 Unit, is absent. They will tour together; it’s not a break-up record, not an album of dissolving, but, rather, songs of discovery. And not at all afraid, not even amid the tears. Which is to say that he has grown up. That it has been a dozen years since he showed up at a party and left in the Drive-By Truckers’ van with two travel days to learn their songs. And then taught them some of his songs in the bargain. Jason Isbell’s solo career has seemed equally effortless, from Sirens of the Ditch (2007) to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (2009), through Here We Rest (2011) and last year ’s Live From Alabama. L o u d re c o rd s , u n re p e n t a n t l y southern, resplendent with careful songwriting. words brushing gently atop an acoustic guitar figure “Cover Me Up,” the song with which he has chosen to open Southeastern. Such tenderness. An act of contrition, an affirmation of need, his voice straining not to break: “Girl leave your boots by the bed / We ain’t leaving this room / Till someone needs medical help / Or the magnolias bloom.” He sighs into the phone, considering what he’s done, and why. “I’m really purposefully
ignorant of any sort of sales consideration, or radio considerations, or anything like that,” Jason says. “Before I’d felt like, this song needs to be this length, or this song needs to be mastered in this way, or this song needs to have drums on it, or this song needs a bigger hook. I just completely did away with all those considerations for this record. And made it as if I were really just making it for me, and for people like me who listen to entire albums.”

Religion Religion briefs Attorney: North Korean detainee was treated well
WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (AP) — The lawyer for an American arrested and held for nearly six months in North Korea for leaving a Bible at a nightclub says the man was treated well by the North Korean government and is in good health. Attorney Timothy Tepe (teep) says the family of detainee Jeffrey Fowle (fowl) is overjoyed to have him home but mindful that two other Americans remain detained in North Korea. Tepe says the family thanks God for protecting Fowle over the past six months. The family also thanked the U.S. State Department and the Swedish Embassy for organizing Fowle's release. Tepe spoke Wednesday standing next to Fowle, Fowle's wife and their three children outside the family's home in rural southwest Ohio. Fowle did not speak, and Tepe says his client needs time to get adjusted to life at home.

UN: Assault on Yazidis may be genocide attempt
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A United Nations official says evidence strongly indicates that the Islamic State group's assault on Iraq's Yazidi religious minority is "an attempt to commit genocide." Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic (EE'-vahn see-MOH'-noh-vich) spoke to reporters Tuesday after a weeklong visit to Iraq, where he spoke with at least 30 Yazidis from various parts of the country. Hundreds of Yazidis were killed as the Islamic State group swept across parts of northern and western Iraq in August. Tens of thousands fled for their lives, most to the Kurdish-held parts of northern Iraq. Hundreds of women and girls were captured by fighters. An estimated 7,000 Yazidis stayed and have been forced to convert to the Islamic State group's harsh interpretation of Islam.
Pope to visit Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia in Turkey
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will visit sites that recall Turkey's often-tumultuous history as a cultural crossroads between continents and faiths during a three-day visit to the country next month. The Vatican announced Tuesday that Francis' first stop on the Nov. 28-30 trip will be a visit to the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. He will also meet Turkey's president and prime minister. The pope travels the next day to Istanbul, where he will visit the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia, an ancient Christian cathedral that was transformed into a mosque after the Muslim conquest of Constantinople and is now a museum. While in Istanbul, the pope will also say a Mass at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and participate in ecumenical prayers at the Church of St. George and meet with Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew.

"St. Vincent"
If we were going to be curmudgeonly about it — and "St. Vincent" is, after all, a movie about a curmudgeon — we'd focus on the one major flaw in the film, and not on its pleasures. But since those pleasures are so, well, pleasurable, we'll do what Vincent — he's the curmudgeon, brought wonderfully to life by the singular Bill Murray — would never do. We'll focus on the positive. Which is considerable. Who wouldn't want to spend 102 minutes in the company of Murray at his grumpy best — his eyes in a perpetual roll, annoyed by anyone and everything, but somehow earning affection from those who annoy him? Not that anyone can figure out why. As Daka the pregnant stripper/prostitute, played Naomi Watts with a go-for-broke Russian accent, asks Vincent's young friend Oliver: "WHY you like him?" F i r s t - t i m e d i re c t o r- s c re e n w r i t e r T h e o d o re M e l f i , who snagged Murray by first calling the actor's 1-800 number and leaving a voice mail, doesn't give us a lot of backstory about Vincent. But by the end of the opening credits, we know pretty much what we need to. Vincent's a mess. Retired and residing alone in a ramshackle house in Brooklyn, he indulges in booze and gambling — and pregnant stripper/prostitute Daka. At the bank, he learns his reverse mortgage has run out. He tries to empty his account, but discovers he's overdrawn by $114. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for mature thematic material including sexual content, alcohol and tobacco use, and for language. " RUNNING TIME: 102 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.
"Birdman"
When we first see Michael Keaton in "Birdman," Alejandro G. Inarritu's bracingly inventive and accomplished new film about fame, relevance, self-worth and lots of other intense stuff, he's sitting in his white undies, in the middle of a dressing room. No, really in the middle. Like, in the air. He's levitating. Of course you think, "How'd he DO that?" Turns out that's an apt metaphor, intentional or not, for Inarritu's entire achievement here. Fast forward to film's end, and we'll bet the very same words will be on your lips: "How'd they DO that?" Still, it's best not to spend too much time thinking about the technical virtuosity of "Birdman," most importantly how it creates the impression, thanks to master cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, that it's all one continuous shot. Remember Lubezki's 13-minute opening in "Gravity"? Merely an appetizer, it turns out. But the best thing about his work here is that it serves the narrative so well, you hardly notice. Keaton, in a wonderfully raw, dark and vulnerable performance, plays aging actor Riggan Thomson, who earned fame and wealth decades ago playing a superhero, Birdman. His fans want more; he's moved on. (Any parallels here with Keaton, star of two "Batman" films a quarter-century ago, are purely intentional.) In a bid to restore his sense of self-worth, and perhaps to exorcise the demon of Birdman — a tall order, since, uh, the superhero still regularly speaks to him in his head — Riggan's putting on a show. It's a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver tale, which Riggan himself has written, is starring in and directing. Your basic movie-star vanity project, only you get the sense Riggan's very life — or at least his sanity — depends on it. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language throughout, some sexual content and brief violence." RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. "Fury"
The relentless barrage of heavy-handedness in David Ayer's World War II tank drama "Fury" begins immediately. A lone horseman approaches on the grim horizon of a foggy, corpsestrewn battlefield. Out of the muck leaps a man who pulls the rider down and savagely bludgeons him in the eye. Ayer, a veteran of the Navy and L.A. crime films like "Training Day" and "End of Watch," wants to make it clear from the start that he's making a film about the barbaric brutality of war. Setting it in April 1945 in the waning days of WWII in Europe only furthers the point that all war — even the supposedly "good" ones — is hell. Into Germany rumbles Sgt. Don Collier (Brad Pitt) and his M4 Sherman tank. With "Fury" blazed on its gun and a claustrophobic warren of bickering soldiers within, the tank is a killing machine, as are its hardened inhabitants. The cast — Shia LaBeouf as the gunner, Jon Bernthal as the loader, Michael Pena as the driver — work to show the darkness that has settled behind their eyes after years of war. Good and bad — the usual battle lines of most WWII tales — isn't the dichotomy of "Fury." A far cry from his debonair "Inglourious Basterds" Nazi-hunter, Pitt's commander is a tough, even cruel boss (and the eye-stabber of the opening). "We're not here for right and wrong," says Pitt. "We're here to kill." Such bleak, unnatural mantras are occasionally spouted by Collier and his crew. The tank, a kind of a roaming lone wolf after its platoon is decimated, is joined by a new recruit, a fresh-faced, ill-prepared typist named Norman (Logan Lerman). RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sequences of war violence, some grisly images and language." RUNNING TIME: 134 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.
"White Bird in a Blizzard"
By now, there should be no question in anyone's mind that Shailene Woodley is an actress on a rapid-fire journey to stardom. She's enchanted us in enough films — "The Descendants," ''The Spectacular Now," ''The Fault in Our Stars" — that one less-than-stellar film won't alter her upward trajectory. Which is good, because "White Bird in a Blizzard" doesn't do her many favors. Actually, let's amend that — those Woodley fans who are excited about the news that she sheds some clothes here will probably not care a whit about whether the film meets its lofty artistic goals. As for the rest of us, well, it's not that Woodley herself disappoints — as usual, she's fresh, natural and always interesting to watch — but the film is such an uncomfortable oddity that its overall weirdness ultimately swallows her up a bit, too. There's a kernel of something tantalizing in "White Bird," writer-director Gregg Araki's highly stylized adaptation of the YA novel by Laura Kasischke about a teen girl discovering herself emotionally and sexually amid some serious family trauma. And few actors portray the awkwardness of teen self-discovery — and sometimes its grace — as well as Woodley. But there's a fine line between stylized and campy, and Araki defiantly crosses it, in any number of cringe-in-yourseat, can-you-believe-this-dialogue, my-gosh-that-feelsfake moments. The voiceover narration is also particularly clunky. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for sexual content/nudity, language and some drug use." RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Nightcrawler"
The most frightening thing about Jake Gyllenhaal in "Nightcrawler" — even more than those sallow, sunken cheeks, those googly eyes, and that unkempt hair tied into a greasy bun — is his smile. They invented the word "creepy" for that smile, a goofy, confident grin that reaches its full breadth just when you're starting to realize how deranged this guy really is. Gyllenhaal's bold, committed performance makes "Nightcrawler" one of the most entertaining movies of the year — though hardly the most profound. The film seeks to convey the seaminess of local TV news, summed up by the phrase "If it bleeds, it leads." The thing is: We already knew this. And frankly, there are so many disturbing things going on in the world right now that it's hard to get too worked up about it. But that doesn't mean that "Nightcrawler" — think "Network," transformed into a taut action film — isn't a compelling and altogether impressive directorial debut for screenwriter Dan Gilroy ("The Bourne Legacy"). Gilroy starts slowly, then ups the pace until we're truly breathless by the culmination of the final action scene. It's a doozy, gorgeously handled by cinematographer Robert Elswit, who makes nighttime Los Angeles a simultaneously chilling and beautiful place. Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a forlorn petty thief when we first meet him, who scours desolate places like construction sites — deep in the night — to rip off barbed wire and manhole covers, then sell them for cash. But soon, on his nocturnal travels, Lou discovers the "nightcrawlers" — freelance cameramen who follow police scanner traffic to grisly scenes. RATEDL R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence including graphic images, and for language." RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes. ASSOCIATED PESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.
"Before I Go to Sleep"
Again teamed with Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman stars as an amnesia victim whose brain resets back to 13 years ago after each night's slumber in the decidedly average psychological thriller "Before I Go to Sleep." Writer-director Rowan Joffe's adaptation of S.J. Watson's bestseller honors the lurid spirit of the page-turner enough to satisfy fans, but he doesn't transmute the material into something richer and deeper as, say, Hitchcock would. The film opens with an extreme close-up on the bloodshot eye of Christine Lucas (Kidman), a woman who wakes up every morning and doesn't recognize her own bedroom or the man in bed next to her (Firth). She is suffering from atypical psychogenic amnesia, which means ever since she endured severe head trauma 13 years ago, she can't retain a day's events in her mind until she goes to sleep, but after a night, the slate's wiped clean again. With a weary patience, the man in bed reveals that he is Christine's husband, Ben, and that she had an accident which caused her amnesia. When Ben goes off to work, the phone rings and a man calling himself Dr. Nasch (Mark Strong) explains to Christine that he's a neuropsychologist who's been helping with her memory disorder. He instructs her on where to find a camera in her closet on which she's recorded a video diary over the last two weeks, prompting an extended flashback to illustrate what she's learned so far. It turns out there's quite a lot that Ben hasn't been telling Christine. RATED R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some brutal violence and language." RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes. In this image released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Michael Keaton portrays Riggan in a scene from "Birdman."
Keaton soars in "Birdman" By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press When we first see Michael Keaton in "Birdman," Alejandro G. Your basic movie-star vanity project, only you get the sense Riggan's very life — or at least his sanity — depends on it. The fodder for industry jokes is endless. When a key actor is suddenly incapacitated, Riggan ponders possible replacements with his friend and attorney, Jake (Zach Galifianakis, exercising admirable comic restraint). Woody Harrelson? He's doing the
next "Hunger Games." Robert Downey Jr.? Nah, "Avengers." That other guy? He's doing the prequel to the prequel. Luck strikes like a thunderbolt when Mike Shiner (Edward Norton, superb) shows up to read for the part. Mike may be an entitled jerk, but he's a bankable star. The scenes between Keaton and Norton as they rehearse, compete and occasionally brawl like testosteronefueled youngsters are simply dynamite, two actors firing on all cylinders. Then there's Sam, Riggan's daughter, fresh from rehab and working as Dad's assistant. It's fun to see Emma Stone play a more troubled, unstable character here; her eyeliner-rimmed eyes seem to contain both love and loathing for her father.
A good week for new releases By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge October has been a strange month for movies. Collectively, the pumpkin-flavored box office has been stronger than a typical fall season would yield. It's also produced a few films that we will still be talking about later in the year when awards season kicks it into high gear. Gone Girl is a runaway hit, thanks in part to the relentless work of Rosamund Pike, but also two of this weekend's releases have really hit a chord with their respective audiences. This is a surefire way to be considered a success, especially in the day and age of Marvel Studios where little else has the chance to hit all four quadrants with ticket buyers. Keanu Reeves has returned to form as assassin John Wick and Bill Murray
gives another of his celebrated seriocomic performances in the audience favorite, "St. Vincent." Director Ted Melfi may have modest ties to St. Louis, but it's the efforts by his leading man that are giving St. Vincent the word-of-mouth buzz that I'm happy to share with you. Bill Murray hasn't shied away from living the career of myth. He's notoriously choosy in the projects he selects and has long eschewed the systemic restraints of being a legitimate movie star. He has forsaken even having a talent agent for the use of an 800-number call service. I even recently read a story where Murray had Melfi pick him up at LAX to hammer out the details of his role/contract. It's a charmed life and the funny man delivers in spades as the alcoholic misanthrope Vietnam veteran who befriends his new neighbor's son.
Plucky Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher) is bright, but he doesn't do well with kids his own age. Instead, he uses his relationship with his curmudgeonly babysitter to better understand bullies, his Catholic school teacher (Chris O'Dowd, a favorite of mine), and his put-upon mother (Melissa McCarthy). The movie as a whole - which features Naomi Watts and Terrence Howard in supporting roles - isn't exactly the most refreshing or complicated of the tales redeeming the heart of a lonely miser, but the last five minutes of this picture won't leave a dry eye. "St. Vincent" runs 102 minutes and is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving sexual content, alcohol and tobacco use, and for language. I give this film three stars out of four. When I noticed that Keanu Reeves
was 50 years-old, it blew my mind. He's older than when he played Neo in "The Matrix" and when he starred in "Speed "(OMG, 1994 was 20 years ago!), but he still looks youthful. "John Wick" is also on the same playing field as these two great movies. As the titular killer, John is unceremoniously returned to the life of crime that he severed himself from five years earlier. Like with most reformed blackhearts, it was for a woman that he loved. It's that wife's death from illness - and the untimely murder of his puppy and theft of his '69 Mustang - that gives the slick action film its catalyst for ninety minutes of non-stop mayhem. The lightning fast work of director Chad Stahelski, Reeves's long-time stunt double, is ostensibly about the revenge that John takes on the rat son (Alfie Allen) of his terrifying former employer (Michael Nyqvist), but it's
November 6, 2014
so much more than that. It's pulsepounding combat sequences. It's harrowing gunplay, with plenty of blood, but with none of the associate gore that can accompany such things. It's a rockin' electronic score in IMAX audio. The whole operetta plays similarly to the stylized work of graphic novels, rooted firmly in its interesting characters that populate a world, frankly, that I'd like to know more about. Adrianne Palicki's killer, Perkins, certainly has a back-story worth sharing. And those ghoulish mystery men played by Lance Reddick and David Patrick Kelly? Those are throw-away roles worth digging back out of the bin. "John Wick" runs 113 minutes and is rated R for strong and bloody violence throughout, language, and brief drug use. I give this film three stars out of four.

Travel India – Urban life Former Glen Carbon residents Bill and Claudia Perozzi are at it again. The world travelers have taken another memorable journey. Here's a look. This is the second of five stories. By CLAUDIA PEROZZI Without exception, everyone on our tour group answered the question, "Why did you come to India?" in the same way: "To see the Taj Mahal." Well, almost without exception. My husband Bill answered, "I’m here because my wife wants to see the Taj Mahal." Bill added that he thought there were many fascinating places to see in India and that was just what our genial guide Sujay wanted to hear. Our group of eleven Americans, having recently arrived at the modern airport in Delhi, gathered to embark on Overseas Adventure Travel's "Heart of India". Sujay assured us we would definitely see the Taj Mahal in the third city of the Golden Triangle which comprised Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. And that we would see much more. For starters, he was excited to show us Delhi, the capital of India. If I had only one word for Delhi, it would be lush. Trees, with a range of green shades from delicate to sturdy sun-filtering leaves, seemed to rise up as a canopy over buildings. No high rises were permitted and the trees actually provided camouflage during times of war. In conjunction with widely used compressed natural gas, the trees help combat air pollution so Delhi is green in both senses of the word. As we rode down shady streets in our cocoon of a large air conditioned bus, we soon encountered blaring horns as heavy traffic wove in and out of lanes. In fact, lanes were pretty much disregarded as honking horns warned of intentions to pass. Noise and congestion of all kinds
of vehicles assailed our ears and eyes. And then right in the midst of all the motorized traffic, walked a man with a holy cow. Really, the tethered cow was colorfully painted and decorated with flowers and just walked along unfazed by all the vehicles and their noisy horns. Equally unfazed, we saw a
family of six riding together on one motorcycle. In fact they smiled and waved at us. The law requires the driver of the motorcycle to wear a helmet so he does and the passengers don't. Also on a motorcycle we saw a driver but we couldn't see his passenger because he was blocked by a washing
machine he was holding as he rode on the back of the cycle. Sujay described the traffic as "a short cut to heaven." Throughout the city we were disturbed to see trash littered everywhere: piles of garbage in front of buildings and refuse in gutters. There is no penalty for littering and
Sujay told us that as soon as some trash is collected, more is just tossed on the ground. How depressing for us but Sujay, who had visited the United States, had a different take. He was shocked by the lack of litter and noise in America. He said it was so quiet, he could hardly get to sleep. Apparently we humans adapt to our surroundings. We reached a remarkably clean section of the city called New Delhi where the seat of government was established by the British. The buildings, especially the curved parliament, were impressive but not open for viewing. In 1947 India achieved independence from Britain and has modeled its present day democracy on the parliamentary system. This relatively new democracy is the largest in the world and the transition has been fraught with turmoil. Today most Indians would describe their government as riddled with corruption and government workers have earned a reputation as bureaucrats in action or inaction. Continued from Page 15

On the Edge of the Weekend

Travel Continued from Page 14 A frequently visited site is the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, the leader in the cause for independence. A square of black marble in a well-maintained park marks the place where he was cremated after his assassination. We were surprised to learn that Gandhi is not universally admired in India because he was thought by some to have had a role in the partitioning of Pakistan as a land for Muslims. Many bloody and bitter battles followed and the enmity between the countries continues. However, most Indians revere Gandhi and many come to this site to meditate and appreciate their non-violent leader. A hub of activity, Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, is located in Delhi. We climbed up this elevated structure encompassing a courtyard large enough to hold 20,000 worshippers. Back down on the street, we boarded rickshaws to ride through the bustling Muslim area on one side of the mosque. Then we walked through the much more sedate Hindu section on the other side. The contrast of the industrious Muslims with the laid back Hindus was dramatic and also reflects their differing attitudes about converting others to their religions. Muslim men have as many as four wives, encourage large families and make the process of conversion very easy as they constantly work to increase their numbers. Hindus, who are monogamous, pass their religion on by birth. Today about eighty percent of the population of India is Hindu but Muslims are free to practice their religion. The Sikhs, an offshoot of Hindus, also have a large temple in Delhi. The men seldom or never cut their hair so they are recognizable by their turbans and beards. Our handsome and skillful bus driver was a Sikh with a trimmed beard. At their temple everyone seemed to be welcome as huge crowds were fed and accommodated. Our group took the opportunity to help prepare and serve the food. As I was dishing out flat bread, one man yelled at me for placing it rather than dropping it on the plate and he effectively ended my short
waitressing career. On our last day in Delhi, we got in one more must-see site, Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world. The geometrically decorated tower is in excellent condition, however some of the structures around it are in ruins. This is obviously a must-see for Indians as we saw large clusters of them in their colorful outfits and we all posed for a photo together. Seeing the amazing minaret and
meeting the friendly Indians ended our time in Delhi on a high note. Leaving Delhi we could see modern high rises beyond the city limits. Sujay explained these areas were being developed mostly by foreign investors. As we journeyed on to Jaipur, herds of sheep and goats accompanied us on the highways. For lunch we got to stop at McDonalds for vegiburgers, a welcome change for me from the spicy meals.
If the color for Delhi is green, the color for Jaipur is pink. In fact it’s called the Pink City as many of its major sites are constructed in rosepainted stucco and trimmed in white. The city was decorated in preparation for a visit in 1921 from the Prince of Wales who became King Edward VII and the colors are still maintained to this day. The word I associate with Jaipur is planned. The city was laid out in specific sections in a very thoughtful way. At one roundabout we marveled at the various modes of transportation--rickshaws, carts pulled by camels, cars, buses, tuktuks and motorcycles-- all flowing together. Jaipur seemed to combine old and new worlds in its structured way. We were given time on our own to walk though the market area. While monkeys swung through the rafters, a peddler and a cow walked along beside us. At least the cow didn't pester us to buy anything but when the price was right, we bought a set of bracelets from the persistent peddler. Situated close to the center of town, the City Palace of Jaipur is actually a complex of beautiful palaces and pavilions set in lovely gardens. Some quarters are still set aside for the descendants of the royal family but much has been made into museums open to the public. Besides royal costumes, weapons and artwork, also on display are two huge sterling silver urns which were made to carry water from the Ganges River for the maharaja to drink when he visited England. Bottled water for us, please. Just outside the city we traveled to Amer Fort, an even larger complex of palaces on a mountain.
November 6, 2014
Remarkably well preserved, this Muslim built fort dates back to the sixteenth century. As we entered the main courtyard, we saw elephants carrying riders across the way. A local guide showed us the main pavilion where petitioners came to see the maharaja. Right across from the pavilion a large building with a lattice work front provided the women of the court with a place to watch the activity without being seen. They not only couldn't be heard, they couldn't even be seen. And there were many of them as rulers could have scores of wives and many concubines. Back in Jaipur, we visited the open air astronomical observatory, Jantar Mantar, which is the largest and best preserved of these in India. We walked among huge instruments built in stone and marble to measure time and predict movements in the sun and stars. Astrology is very important to Indians as they plan major life events such as weddings on auspicious dates, when heavenly bodies are favorably aligned. Besides experiencing present day urban life in Delhi and Jaipur we could see something of India’s past preserved and we appreciated its history even more. We felt ready to travel on to India’s most famous sight, the Taj Mahal in Agra.

The Arts A St. Louis favorite returns to the Touhill For The Edge Saint Louis Ballet is pleased to announce its 2014-2015 line up that begins with the holiday favorite "The Nutcracker" and concludes with a company debut of the fiery ballet Don Quixote. Under the direction of former New York City Ballet principal dancer Gen Horiuchi, the company is St. Louis’ only professional ballet company. "I am very excited about the 20142015 season -- we begin the season with the annual holiday classic The Nutcracker, then we are inviting two guest choreographers from New York for Love is in the Air and finally in May we are presenting the full length ballet Don Quixote for the first time in St. Louis. I am looking forward to putting together these wonderful productions with my 24 talented professional dancers from around the world." ~ Gen Horiuchi "The Nutcracker,"with music by Peter Tchaikovsky, has become a holiday tradition in St. Louis, with 10 performances of the classic scheduled for December 18-23 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. First performed in St. Petersburg, Russia more than 100 years ago, it is based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s 1816 tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The great George Balanchine choreographed "The Nutcracker" for New York City Ballet where Horiuchi performed many principal roles in the New York City production during his 13 years there. For specific showtimes and ticket information, visit www.touhill.org or call (314) 516-4949. Horiuchi’s version, on the vast Touhill stage, incorporates spectacular effects such as glitter, smoke and pyrotechnics as well as new effects and choreography each year to make it more exciting for audiences. This magical adventure, appropriate for all ages, features the professional company, new apprentices and students from the St. Louis Ballet School – plus special surprise guests! Tickets to the Sugar Plum Fairy

Pictured are two scenes from "The Nutcracker." Luncheons (December 20, 22, 23), popular pre-show accompaniments, are sold separately from the ballet this season. They include full, catered lunches for adults and children in a fancifully decorated room at the Touhill. Costumed characters from The Nutcracker will sign autographs and present photo opportunities. New this season – Nutcracker Dinners that include a catered meal in a festive room and a visit from Santa Claus. These special meals are ideal for families and are scheduled prior to the ballets on December 19 and 20. Saint Louis Ballet returns to the Touhill in mid-February, 2015 for a program of new work that fits the sentiment of Valentine’s
Day. Love is in the Air features the company along with smooth and romantic melodies such as George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. Dancers in evening dresses and tuxedos will sway and plunge to the familiar melodies with choreography by Francis Patrelle. Emery LeCrone, who has created choreography for Guggenheim Museum’s acclaimed Works & Process performing arts series and New York City Ballet’s New York Choreographic Institute, will choreograph a romantic ballet. Additional work may include pieces by George Balanchine and Horiuchi’s “La Vie” first seen in New Dance Horizons 2013. Tickets to a pre-show dinner on February
13 will go on sale in December. Saint Louis Ballet will perform Don Quixote for the first time in May, 2015. Based on the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cer van tes, th e ballet is known for its demanding choreography and technical w i z a rd r y. D o n Q u i x o t e i s a marriage of traditional ballet and Spanish dance -- full of “heat”, firelight and thrills. This classic follows Spain’s legendary hero and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, to Barcelona on a quest for his dream lover, Dulcinea. Don Quixote was first presented by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow in 1869. Since then, it has been staged by companies all over the world in many different versions, all populated by matadors, mischievous lovers, valiant knights and spirits. “We are very excited to present Don Quixote,” Horiuchi said. “Not only is it our first time dancing this classic, but it’s the first time a St. Louis company has mounted an original production of the ballet. It is one of the most extravagant productions and St. Louis audiences will love the energy and passion.” Saint Louis Ballet is the region’s only professional ballet company. Under the direction of former New York City Ballet principal dancer Gen Horiuchi, its 24 classically trained dancers are selected in a competitive national audition and come to St. Louis from training programs and ballet companies throughout the world. The company’s repertoire includes fulllength ballets such as Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet and Cinderella as well as contemporary work from renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Christopher d’Amboise, Jessica

Lang and Michael Uthoff. In addition to a season of fully mounted productions, Saint Louis Ballet operates a ballet training program and conducts outreach to 1,000 at-risk students through its partnerships with local social service agencies and public schools. Gen Horiuchi has been the artistic director of the Saint Louis Ballet Company and School since 2000. He has created over 20 original works for the company and has spearheaded the growth of the School based in Chesterfield. Raised in Tokyo by parents who were professional ballet dancers, he won the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, the international ballet competition in Switzerland in 1980 (and since 1993 has been a judge for the competition). He then received a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet. In 1982, he was invited by George Balanchine to join the New York City Ballet, where he became a principal dancer in 1989. He’s danced on Broadway in Song and Dance and was also Mr. Mistoffelees in the musical Cats, both on Broadway and in London's West End. He choreographed the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan in 1998. In 2004, he was honored in New York City with the Seventh Cultural Bridge Award together with Harold Prince, (director of Phantom of the Opera). He has directed the Aoyama Ballet Festival in Tokyo with artists in major companies from around the world. And since 2010, he has been directing Gen Horiuchi’s Ballet USA each summer in Osaka, Japan where he sets his own choreography on professional dancers and brings guests like Miyako Yoshida, former Royal Ballet principal, to dance alongside him to sold out audiences.
