People People planner Dinosaurs to invade Botanical Garden The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is marking the golden anniversary of one of its most popular attractions, the Climatron®, by transporting visitors back in time to the golden age of dinosaurs. Feel the thrill of encountering a hulking Placerias, bird-like Bambiraptor or soaring Sordes in an unparalleled environment: hidden in the heart of a thriving tropical rain forest. Witness dozens of these realistic, pre-historic creatures when “ D i n o Q u e s t : A Tro p i c a l Tre k Through Time” debuts at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2010. Since 1960, the Climatron has easily been one of the most recognizable features at the Garden, noted as the first geodesic dome to be used as a plant conservatory. Inside, lush green foliage, cascading waterfalls and a warm, humid climate simulate an authentic jungle atmosphere. “This exhibition provides a perfect introduction to the history of life on earth, extinction, and survival. How we manage our resources will have a major effect on the future of life, and there are many lessons to be learned from the past,” said Dr. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “In addition to the educational value, there is also a real sense of excitement in experiencing these lifelike creatures in such an aweinspiring setting. We hope it will evoke wonder, imagination and intrigue in visitors of all ages.” On the “trek through time,” visitors of all ages will experience life in a tropical forest long ago, today and tomorrow. A smooth pathway winds through the 2 4 , 0 0 0 - s q u a re - f o o t C l i m a t ro n conservatory, where more than a dozen installations depict dinosaurs and reptiles from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic and Permian periods “frozen in time” amid the living flora. Encounter hungry herbivores, including a pair of toothy Heterodontosaurus and an eight-foot-long,bulky-bodied Placerias. Spot a flock of bird-like Bambiraptors hovering beneath green cycads, keeping watch over nests brimming with eggs. Identify a large Dimetrodon by the finned “sail” along its spine, or the threefoot-long Rhamphorynchus by its fur-covered wings. Postosuchus, a pre-dinosaur age predator of Placerias, hides atop a cliff near a bamboo grove, while a hungry Syntarsus lurks beneath a large tree. See the Compsognathus tend to their nests near the basin of a waterfall as a trio of vigilant Oviraptors keep watch over their nests of offspring near a shallow pool. “DinoQuest: A Tropical Trek Through Time” is on display Saturday, May 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

MoBOT will celebrate Chanukah Visit the Missouri Botanical Garden on Sunday, Dec. 6 to experience the traditions of “Chanukah: Festival of Lights.” Storytelling, festive Israeli music and dance, and a ceremonial menorah-lighting will mark the annual Jewish holiday. Festivities begin at noon with the symbolic lighting of one of eight candles on a menorah, which represents the first of eight evenings that the miraculous oil jar burned in the temple. Immediately following are student performances by the Reform Jewish Academy School, the Solomon Schechter Day School, and the Epstein Hebrew Academy chorus. The St. Louis Jewish Women’s Choir and the Circle of Jewish Music Group will also perform. At 2 p.m., listen to traditional Jewish and Chanukah festival music performed by the female quartet Shir Ami (Song of My People). At 3 p.m., the group HaShemesh (The Sun) will sing and play contemporary Israeli folk music. Visitors can browse a traditional “shuk” (marketplace),
with merchandise from B’rith Sholom Keneset Israel, The Silver Lady, and B’nai El Congregation Gift Shop, or stop by the Garden Gate Shop for Chanukah-themed merchandise. “Chanukah: Festival of Lights” will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Activities are included with Garden admission of $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon. Fort Gondo exhibit puts emphasis on eroticism
By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Tracy Hudson and Nathan Gaefcke are local artists that are pleased to announce their newest art exhibition entitled “The Keeper and the Kept” at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, located at 315 Cherokee Street, in St. Louis. The show may not be for all ages, use your own judgement, as the topic is “eroticism.” The artists describe their exhibit: “What is eroticism? Is it a scientific impulse predetermined from birth or is it something else entirely? Provocative and alluring, ‘The Keeper and the Kept’ features explorations of human attraction through the lens of voyeurism and inherent scientific impulses. The ceramic forms of Tracy L. Hudson use the abstract with the readily apparent to convey the fertile and sumptuous appeal of the female body while Nathaniel Gaefcke’s prints and drawings portray not only the human figure, but also the science and psychology involved in our attraction to it.” Nathaniel Gaefcke and Tracy L. Hudson present their senior thesis exhibition for the culmination of their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Nathan is graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in drawing and is originally from Divernon. His work is about the synthesis of the scientific and the romantic. The figures are rendered through a scientific viewpoint, depicting them as anatomical studies, but the compositions and the orientations of the figures bring into play the idea of romance through the viewer’s eye as the voyeur. The show also features abstracted pointillisms rendering the concept of the chemical reactions that take place when we feel love or lust for another human being. He works primarily with graphite, delicately and laboriously layering it to achieve the high contrast and disappearing edges into the foreground. He uses inks to stipple his abstract images. These processes are very tedious and require a lot of thought and consideration as well as constant evaluation. He also experiments with several printmaking processes as well. Tracy is graduating with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in ceramics and is a life-long resident of Edwardsville and graduated from Edwardsville High School in 2001. Her work combines the sensuousness of the human form and the quiet beauty and allure of flowers as well as examines the parallels between the human and flower worlds’ rules of attraction. She works primarily with porcelain. Through use of slip trailing and by altering the forms, the work displays deep crevices, small freckle-like bumps, and the soft organic curves of both humans and flowers. Her work is fired to cone 10 in an atmospheric soda kiln, giving the glazes a variable and lively palette. The exhibition will run through Nov. 27, at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts, 315 Cherokee St., in St. Louis. For hours or more information, call 314-772-3628 or email info@fortgondo.com.

The Arts Wash. U. to present “The Pillowman”
There are good parents and there are bad parents and then there are the outrageously horrible parents of Katurian K. Katurian, the writer at the center of Martin McDonagh’s macabre, pitch-black comedy The Pillowman. T h i s m o n t h Wa s h i n g t o n University’s Performing Arts Department in Arts & Sciences will present The Pillowman — winner of the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play — in the A.E. Hotchner Studio Theatre. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 19, 20 and 21; and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22. The A.E. Hotchner Studio Theatre is located in the Mallinckrodt Student Center, 6445 Forsyth Blvd. Tickets are $15, or $10 for students, seniors and Washington University faculty and staff, and are available through the Edison Theatre Box Office and all MetroTix outlets. For more information, call (314) 935-6543. Set amidst a Kafkaesque police state, The Pillowman opens in a stark interrogation room, where the adult Katurian — a slaughterhouse worker beginning to find recognition as a writer of gruesome fairy tales — sits blindfolded, his brother Michal in the adjoining room. Their interrogators, the outrageously profane good-copbad-cop duo of Tupolski and Ariel, suspect that Katurian’s stories may not be entirely fiction. And in fact, they do bear remarkable resemblance to a series of grisly child murders that the detectives are currently investigating. “This is not an easy play,” warns Annamaria Pileggi, senior lecturer in the PAD, who directs the cast of seven. “It’s extraordinarily dark, the language is very dense, and there’s a fairly high level of violence — its grimmer than Grimms.” “And yet The Pillowman is also hysterically funny,” Pileggi continues. “Tupolski and Ariel are sarcastic and patronizing and say outlandish things that almost make you feel uncomfortable for laughing. You find yourself laughing, and then look around to make sure everyone else is too.” The cast is led by sophomore John Ganiard as Katurian and junior Dan Tobin as Michal. Max Risman and senior Ben Walsh is play Tupolski and Ariel, the “good-cop-bad-cop” interrogators. Senior Ginny Page and junior Jonathan Emden play three sets of parents, including Katurian’s. Freshman Melissa Freilich plays children in two of Katurian’s stories. Sets designs are by Sean Savoie, lecturer in the PAD. Costumes are by senior Ellen Minch. Lighting and sound are by Jonathan Lebovic and senior Adina Talve-Goodman. Mark Rubinstein is special effects supervisor.

Movies “The Fourth Kind” earns three stars By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge It was a slow weekend at the box office, nationwide, but I’m now left wondering if that’s due to the distinctly sci-fi flavor to three of the four films that h i t t h e m a r k e t p l a c e . G e o rg e Clooney (in "The Men Who Stare at Goats") spent his time explaining to Ewan McGregor a secret military task force from t h e Vi e t n a m e r a t h a t t r a i n e d soldiers to be “Jedi warriors” capable of changing the tide of battle with the untapped power of their minds. Cameron Diaz (in "The Box") got off on some weird tangents when Frank Langella offers her a million dollars to kill an anonymous, unseen stranger. I took my time with “The Fourth Kind,” a very interesting type of film that was a blend of the best parts of “The X-Files,” “The Blair Witch Project,” and (more topically) the terrifyingly realistic “Paranormal Activity.” Every minute of "The Fourth Kind" asserts itself as a fictional re-creation of true events from the earlier part of this decade. In interview form, aided by long flashbacks and large amounts of pseudo-documentary footage, we are presented with amazing
“The Fourth Kind” RATED: PG-13 for violent/ disturbing images, some terror, thematic elements, and brief sexuality. ROBERT'S RANKING: three stars out of four. stories of alien abduction— abduction being the fourth type of human-alien interaction based on the famous scale created by J. Allen Hynek in 1972. It opens with—and frequently returns to—an interview between a frail woman, credited only as Dr. Abigail Tyler, and an interviewer who is played by the movie’s writer/director Olatunde Osunsanmi. T h e i n t e r v i e w c o n c e r n s D r. Tyler ’s studies regarding wideranging alien abductions within the population of Nome, Alaska in the summer of 2000. T h e f o o t a g e o f D r. Ty l e r ’ s interview is inter-cut with grainy videotaped images of her meetings with patients during that fateful summer which was also the year her husband was allegedly killed by an intruder
in their home. What makes the juxtaposition o f t h e n e w s re e l - s t y l e f o o t a g e so jarring is how unpolished it is against the Hollywoodized version which stars Milla Jovovich as a younger, heartier Abbey Tyler. Abbey’s hypnotherapy work with disturbed abductees c u l m i n a t e s i n t o a n e v e n m o re disturbing encounter of her own. In turn, this leads to the disappearance of her daughter, Ashley (Mia McKenna-Bruce) and the involvement of the trustworthy, no-nonsense local sheriff (Will Patton). The unique storytelling style, which can be a touch h e a d y a t t i m e s , m a y b e h a rd to appreciate in written
description. Part investigationdriven drama and part thingsthat-go-bump-in-the-night spookfest, this movie thrives more on the believability of its supporting characters (Elias K o t e a s a s A b b e y ’ s m e n t o r, Corey Johnson as a local victim) than it does on outright scary images. Fortunately for the filmmakers, Hynek’s scale has been expanded over the years to include close encounters of the fifth, sixth, and seventh kinds. T h e s e q u e l p o s s i b i l i t i e s a re ripe for the taking, a concept t h a t n o r m a l l y t i c k s m e o ff i n a m a j o r w a y, b u t t h e d o o r a t the end of this show is left hanging wide open and I’d like somebody to close it tightly.

Mo’Nique gets serious in “Precious” By MESFIN FEKADU Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Mo’Nique likes to laugh. A lot. So the comedian knew she would be taking on a tough mental challenge when she decided to play the role of Mary Jones — the vicious, abusive mother in the critically acclaimed film “Precious: Based on the Novel ’Push’ by Sapphire.” She was up to the task for most of the movie. But she admits that there was one scene that required so much hate that she almost fell apart. “There was one time that I got scared because I didn’t think that my mind or heart could go to that place,” the 40-year-old said. But she pulled it off with a portrayal so searing, so devastating, that she’s being touted as a possible Oscar nominee. The dark urban drama, which debuted at January’s Sundance Film Festival, won both the top jury prize and the award as the audience’s favorite film. It opens in U.S. cinemas on Friday. T h e f i l m f o l l o w s C l a re e c e “Precious” Jones, an overweight, illiterate and abused Harlem teen who is pregnant with her second child. Precious, played by newcomer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe, is constantly discouraged by her mother, played by Mo’Nique. The Lee Daniels-directed film — which also features Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz — is being backed by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, who serve as executive
Associated Press
In this film publicity image released by Lionsgate films, Mo’Nique is shown in a scene from “Precious.” producers. In a recent interview, Mo’Nique talked about her role in the film, her recent weight loss and putting her “diva” ways behind her. The Associated Press: You’re known for making people laugh and
Mary Jones is almost the complete opposite. How was it for you to play that role? Mo’Nique: Rewarding. It was excited. It was challenging because I love to laugh, baby, I love to laugh. But it was appreciated because
I don’t know of any other director that would have given two fat, black women the opportunity to do what
we did... The world needs to see it because guess what, Mary Jones exists, baby. So does Precious. AP: How would you describe the film? Mo’Nique: It is about a forgotten people. It is about obesity. It’s about molestation. It’s about cruelty. It’s about HIV/AIDS. But it’s about triumph — and that’s the beauty of the movie. People say, “How do you walk away saying it’s beautiful?” When you watch it and you understand, through it all, somebody can pick themselves up and keep it moving, that’s beautiful... So I was proud to be a part of something that is very honest, and Lee Daniels, baby, he’s going to give it to you. He’s going to give it to you raw. No chaser, no lollipop licking, this is it. It’s the dirt, it’s the grime, it’s what we’re afraid of. AP: Thinking about how Mary treated her own daughter — did that make you hate the very character you were portraying? Mo’Nique: Reading the book, I disliked what she did. I won’t say I disliked her, but I disliked what she did. Getting to that last scene of Mary Jones, I understood her. For as crazy as that sounds, you don’t excuse it, but you don’t want to judge it. Because it’s easy to say that she’s a monster, she’s cruel, she’s mean, but then who took out the time to say, “Well what happened to you, baby?”

Oak Terrace Resort Central Illinois’ unexpected treat By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Tucked away among the trees, in the heart of central Illinois, is a haven for those who love golf, love relaxation or just want a special place to get away. Oak Terrace Resort and Spa is an unexpected and unique find just outside Pana. Don and Pat Beyers originally purchased
400 acres in the 1960s. The Beyers began building a lodge and then a 66 acre manmade lake came around 1970. Home construction slowly followed and later more improvements. Eventually, in 1992, a nine hole golf course was completed and the other nine were added in 1993. Thus, Oak Terrace Resort came to be. Along the transition, The Beyers handed the reins over to their son and his wife, Mike and Linda Beyers, who are now the current owners

of the resort. Some of their children are also involved in the development and running of the business. The Beyers have gone the extra mile to make Oak Terrace a first class resort and spa destination. Not only are visitors surrounded by the beautiful setting of rolling hills, the lake and ponds, and a world class golf course, but the accommodations are the finest of any Illinois resort or maybe further. Whether you book a room in the 37-room inn with golf course views, make your self at home in the Fairway Townhomes or treat yourself to real luxury in the Lakeside Villas, you will not be disappointed. The Inn is connected to Mulligan’s Grille, the resort’s restaurant that has a great selection of sandwiches, steaks, fish and other great selections. Also located with The Inn is a pro shop and an indoor pool and hot tub. The Fairway Townhomes offer high ceiling living rooms, two bedrooms, two baths, with full kitchen and patio facing the course. If you are truly looking for a pampered getaway, check into the Lakeside Villas, offering full kitchen, screened porch with hot tubs overlooking the lake, fireplace and flat screen HD-TVs. If relaxation is your goal, you have to make the trip to the LakeView Spa. Not only do you get a view of the lake from practically anywhere in the spa, the list of services is more complete than you will find at most area spas to rekindle your spirit and rejuvenate your body. The staff at the spa is prepared to pamper you and help you to relax and take care of your needs, without all the daily interruptions of life. Maybe you are in need of a full body hot stone massage or a body wrap. Stress and
tension will melt away with any of the massage services offered. If youthful skin is what you seek, there is a full menu of facial services that will give you a refreshed and revived look and feel. Teeing off at Oak Terrace By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge Oak Terrace Resort and Spa is truly for everyone. Just like the extensive and impressive range of amenities at the resort and spa, the golf course also exceeds visitors’ expectations. The course, just shy of 6,400 yards, is on the outskirts of Pana, and in the heart of this family owned and operated resort. It provides golfers with a links style course on the front nine and a wooded wonderland on the back nine – and both with a variety of challenges from water hazards to trees and rolling hills. The course, just like the resort, is absolutely beautiful, from the bluegrass fairways to the greens to the surrounding scenery. But what sets the course apart is its ability to challenge golfers of all levels with not only its variation of fairways and hole placements, but specifically with its wide-range of tee locations – blue, white, gold or red. You can make the course as challenging as you chose. It is remarkably playable and enjoyable to all levels of golfers. Some of the course’s most challenging holes are No. 12 through No. 16 – a stretch of “risk/reward holes” called Shotmaker’s Mile. And there is a vast difference between the shot a blue tee box player will face compared to a red tee player especially along this stretch. For example, No. 14 is a 490-yard (blue tees) par-5 with a 90 degree dogleg with about 220 yards to the green. Now a player playing from the blue tees will not only face a longer distance to the green, but also a more challenging shot if they chose to carry the dogleg by going over the large set of trees that lines the fairway. But those who are electing to play the

remaining white (460 yards) or gold (448 yards) or red (384 yards) will face a less challenging shot indeed – especially those playing from the red tee box. But No. 14’s fun does not end there – the green is elevated and enclosed by trees. And the same is for the most beautiful and defining hole on the course which has to be No. 15, also surrounded by trees and water. There is also little room for error here. It is a Par-4 with 267 yards from the blue tee box, 238 from the white and 233 from the gold. These tee boxes are perched up on a hill looking
down at the green at an angle. All players from there will face the water although they may chose to lay up on the fairway or go for the green. But the red tee box is down the hill. These players will face a completely different angle to the hole – a 159-yard shot - almost straight shot, but remember trees line the left side of the fairway and water lingers on the right side and then loops around the hole. Golfers (men and women) of all abilities should find this course fun and challenging. And remember the spa is just a short drive down the road! The resort is just a short drive, about an hour and a half from the Metro East and either perfect for a day trip or even weekend getaway. The resort has a variety of packages for golfers and spa goers and the resort has plenty of lodging options including townhomes, LakeSide Villas and even a hotel. The added amenities for a stay include outdoor pool (seasonal), indoor pool, gym, walking trails and boat rentals. The hotel is adjacent to the golf pro shop and includes a re s t a u r a n t s e r v i n g b re a k f a s t , lunch and dinner. In addition, the resort offers those with longterm opportunities for guests interested in staying for a week or a lifetime. And there are even further discounts at the spa and season passes for the course available to those looking to make it a repeated destination of choice. The course also includes a driving range and practice facility. To learn more about the course, visit www. oakterraceresort.com or call 800577-7598 to book your tee time.

The Arts Travel briefs What’s new at ski destinations, from Oregon to Maine NEW YORK (AP) — The November issue of National Geographic Adventure magazine is recommending 11 ski destinations from Oregon to Maine. They are: —Snowmass in Colorado, described as an alternative to the “hustle and bustle of downtown Aspen.” —Sun Valley, Idaho, which the magazine says is launching its first gondola this winter for the ride 2,000 vertical feet up Bald Mountain. —Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, where you can reach the High West Distillery and Saloon’s bar and tapas restaurant on skis via the Quittin’ Time run. —Rossland, in British Columbia, described as a “no-stoplights, noStarbucks former mining town” with incredible backcountry. —Northstar-at-Tahoe in California, with a new Ritz Carlton and a new gondola to complement the deep Sierra snows and tall ponderosa pines. —Mount Bachelor in Oregon, where daily lift tickets this season will be priced $49, $59 or $69, depending on lift-serviced available terrain and weather factors such as visibility, wind, precipitation and temperature. —Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, where only 10 percent of the mountain will be closed to the public during the Olympics. —Sugar Bowl in the Lake TahoeTruckee area, where a new Olympic sport, skicross, will be featured on a new course in a pre-Olympics show, Feb. 1-17. The sport involves four skiers at a time down a course with banked turns and jumps — think Moto Cross on skis. —Jay Peak Resort in Vermont, which is opening a new luxury hotel
this season, the Tram Haus Lodge. —Cannon Mountain, in New Hampshire, which this season will provide shuttle transportation to Mittersill, an abandoned ski area that can now offer backcountry skiers access to ungroomed terrain. —Saddleback in Maine, where the owners have been increasing skiable terrain and improving facilities, and will open a new glade this winter.
Get the most for your money when planning ski trips CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. (AP) — A few ski areas have already opened both in the West and the East, including Arapahoe Basin and Loveland in Colorado, and Sunday River in Maine. Others are gearing up for their traditional Thanksgiving opening days. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your skiing budget from travel planners at Crested Butte Vacations, which is the central reservations service for Crested Butte Mountain Resort: —If you must visit over the holidays, pick Thanksgiving over Christmas or President’s Weekend. At many resorts, “peak season” doesn’t begin until the week prior to Christmas, and often resorts offer early season packages and specials. Guests booking lodging with Crested Butte Vacations receive free skiing with their reservation between Nov. 24 and Dec. 16, and if you stay at a Crested Butte Mountain Resort property, you also get a free adult group half-day lesson. —Look for “fly-in, ski-out” deals that might include direct flights to local airports with transportation from the airport to the lodge, so you don’t have to rent a car. Some resorts have free airport shuttles, and some airports offer buses to ski areas with

inexpensive and convenient pick-up and drop-off locations. Crested Butte Mountain Resort offers a “Friends & Family Fly Free” deal that offers one free airline ticket to Gunnison/ Crested Butte Airport for every three people you book. —Go in a group with family or friends and save on lodging by renting a condo or house to share, with a full kitchen. You’ll save by eating breakfast at home along with any other meals you care to cook. —The longer you stay, the less per day you are likely to spend, thanks to multi-day discounts on lift tickets, lodging and rental equipment. —Weigh the cost of baggage fees for flying with your own equipment and gear versus the cost of renting on site. Holidays have such great meaning for family and friends, but with the holidays comes the stress of all the preparation of family gatherings, meals and shopping. Stress overtaxes and drains one mentally, physically and emotionally. Negative stress can initiate and contribute to many disease processes and aggravate current ones. It is important to recognize how we handle our stress, how we take it on and how we release it. Meditation, exercises, music, walks, well-balanced diet, good sleep, sunshine and laughter are some of the ways of relieving stress and being in control of innermost thoughts and our actions. Relax with a cup of herbal tea while you enjoy these recipes. May your holidays be full of joy, peace and hope!

Show time is 8 p.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall. With a distinctive voice and style that has led him to chart more singles than any artist in history – 166 and counting – George Jones has been lauded by the press and fellow singers as the “King of Country Music.” His staggering array of number one hits includes The Grand Tour, A Picture of Me Without You, The Door White Lightning and Tender Years. He and his former wife Tammy Wynette were a duet powerhouse, releasing many hit singles including We’re Gonna Hold On and Golden Ring.
In 1980, Jones released his biggest song, He Stopped Loving Her Today. It went on to win virtually every award in music, including a Grammy and a Country Music Award for Single of the Year. His 2008 recording, Burn Your Playhouse Down, is a collection of never before heard duets between Jones and an illustrious group of guest stars. The recordings range from the mid-70s with his former wife Tammy Wynette to a 2007 recording with his daughter Georgette Jones, titled You and Me and Time. Jones’ latest album, A Collection of My Best Recollection, features 10 hit singles and two previously unreleased songs, I Don’t Want to Know and I’m a Long Gone Daddy. Judy Collins to visit the Sheldon Grammy Award-winning vocalist to host Winter Benefit By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Grammy Award-winning vocalist Judy Collins returns to The Sheldon stage on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. for the Friends of The Sheldon Winter Benefit with special guest Kenny White. With a career spanning over 40 years, Judy Collins continues to thrill audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folk songs and contemporary themes, making this concert a can’t miss event. Judy Collins has made her made her mark on the music scene since the 1960s, but many may not realize that she is also an accomplished author. She has written “Trust Your Heart” an early memoir of her youth and early career, “Singing Lessons: A Memoir of Love, Loss, Hope and Healing” and “Sanity and Grace: A Journey of Suicide, Survival and Strength,” both memoirs and self-help from her experiences after her 33 year old son committed suicide in 1992. She has also written a couple of other self-help books “Morning, Noon and Night: Living the Creative Life,” and “The Seven T’s: Finding Hope and Healing in the Wake of Tragedy.” Her experiences with grief, trying to just survive, and then thrive again have lent her the wisdom to share her stories and healing techniques with others. Most known for her interpretation of songs such as “Send in the Clowns” and “Both Sides Now,” Judy Collins began her career in the folk clubs of Colorado, making her way east to Greenwich Village and the 1960s folk scene. Her 1967 album, “Wildflowers,” earned Collins her first Grammy nomination, which lead her to record “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Turn, Turn, Turn” with Roger McGuinn. Her success continued through the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s with original songs including “My
Father” and “Born to Breed,” and a Bob Dylan tribute album,”Judy Sings Dylan…Just Like a Woman.” She was the first to record the songs of Leonard Cohen and helped to bring musicians like Randy Newman and Joni Mitchell to widespread public exposure. Collins continues to record, with a recent album in 2005, “Portrait of an American Girl.” Throughout her career, Judy Collins has been socially active as she is a representative for UNICEF and an advocate for the destruction of landmines and suicide prevention. Judy Collins continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart. Pianist Kenny White opens the concert. Known for his insightful, well-crafted, original songs, White began his career in New York City writing music for movies, television and commercials, working with artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Gladys Knight and Ricky Skaggs. He moved to Boston to try his hand on the singer-songwriter circuit and collaborated with artist such as Shawn Colvin, Richard Shindell and Cheryl Wheeler. His latest album, “Symphony in 16 Bars, “was released on Judy Collins independent Wildflower Records. Proceeds from this very special evening benefit Sheldon educational programs which serve over 20,000 St. Louis area students each year. Patron tickets are on sale now at $150 and $125 and include preferred seating, complimentary parking, post-concert reception and a tax deduction. Call The Sheldon at 314-533-9900. Single tickets and are $45 orchestra and $40 balcony. Call MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit www. TheSheldon.org. Sitting the perfect holiday table By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Thanksgiving gets a bum rap. The shopping centers and television commercials seem to go straight from Halloween right into Christmas. Probably because Thanksgiving doesn’t have the re v e n u e m a k i n g a b i l i t y t h a t Halloween and Christmas do, but none the less, it is a national holiday and part of our heritage. Other than the food, the table presentation may be the second m o s t i m p o r t ant detail in the Thanksgiving preparation. If you are like most, we don’t think about what we want to do with out tables until the last minute. Maybe your table is in use everyday or maybe you just don’t have the time to have that forethought, so here are some ideas to maybe help you get your table looking like a pro’s. Table runner of plenty: Either take your leftover gourds and small pumpkins, or check out your local grocery stores or end of season markets and pick up a half dozen or so. If you cannot find real, go for the imitation. In the craft section of your favorite department store, Hobby Lobby or Michael’s, you can find faux vines with berries through out. The vining portion has wire in the center and can be bent according to your decor choice. You can run the vine straight down your table placing the pumpkins or gourds on alternating sides or bend the vine in “s” shapes to place the pumpkins and gourds in “s” turns. You can also choose to place candles throughout the runner. Fresh flowers afloat: Stop by your
November 19, 2009
local dollar store and pick up four clear four inch bowls (sizes can vary if you like). Then stop by your local florist and pick up gerbra daisies in fall colors (the large daisies that come in a variety of colors – your florist will know). Fill the bowls about half way with water, and cut the stems about an inch from the head of the daisy. Place the daisy in the water to float on top. You can place a fabric runner under the bowls, but place the bowls in a straight line down the center of your table. For more flare, place a candle in between each bowl, or add a little contrasting food color to the water. The floral pumpkin: Take your pumpkin left from Halloween (uncarved) or again, find one at your local grocery store or market. Take an ice pick or something that will make a hole in the pumpkin large enough to put a flower stem in. Either purchase some fall colored mini mums from your florist or store, or purchase some smaller fall colored imitation
flowers. Start at the stem of the pumpkin and poke three holes to the right of the stem of the pumpkin. Cut the stems off the flowers approximately two to three inches from the head of the flower. Place one flower in each of the three holes, alternating the colors. Go down about an inch from the flower heads you just placed and poke the next row of holes, starting about an inch to the right of where you first placed your holes. The idea is to make a cascade of flowers that swirls around the pumpkin until you get to the bottom. If your flowers are not staying in place, try a little hot glue, but if you are using real flowers, don’t seal off the bottoms, keep the glue on the sides of the stem. You can cut the bottoms off the real flowers and place them in water a couple hours before you use them. Then moisture from the pumpkin will be enough to keep the flowers fresh for a couple days. Enjoy your Thanksgiving table.

Family Focus Cougars rare outside of Hollywood NEW YORK (AP) — Darin Riggio has a thing for older women — he dated his first “Cougar” when he was a 19-year-old college student. She was 43. Since then, the 24-year-old who lives in Boca Raton, Fla., has dated women old enough to be his mother. “Women my age don’t know what they want,” said Riggio, ticking off his list of why older women are better. “Two, they are usually immature. Three, there’s a lot of drama involved. Four, they don’t have as much experience as older women.” But Riggio, who was briefly married to a woman his age, said he probably wouldn’t marry an older woman. He likes to date them more for fun. Cougar relationships may be hot in Hollywood — from ABC’s “Cougar Town” to celebrity couplings like Ashton and Demi and even a reality show, “The Cougar” — but few women are married to men who are significantly younger. Dating experts say they have seen a rise in older women seeking younger men, though not necessarily the other way around. And they say those matches don’t tend to turn into long-term relationships. In fact, only 1 percent of all marriages in 2008 were between a woman who was 10-14 years older than her husband; 2.6 percent 6 to 9 years older, according to Census figures. (About 5 percent and 11.6 percent the other way around, respectively.) “I don’t think we’re going to see a wholesale change in our society with younger men all the sudden wanting to marry older women,” said Debbie Then, a social psychologist in California. “But I think they may date some Cougars who are still sort of looking young, hip and hot. “I think the younger men, it’s more of an adventure for them,” she added. “It’s like traveling to an exotic land for a while.” Christie Nightingale of the matchmaking service Premier Match said she has seen an increase in the past six months of women requesting younger men. A 48-year-old woman used to want a man between the ages of 45 and 60, she said. Now she wants a man between the ages of 35 and 50. The women say they are “so youthful and so full of energy,” men their age or older can’t keep up with them, Nightingale said. But she has not seen a change in age preference from her male clients, so she has found herself calling them to see if they would be open to dating an older woman. While a few of them are willing to try it, she doesn’t believe they are serious about it long-term. Valerie Gibson, author of “Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men,” says that is fine for a real Cougar, a term she says has been misused to describe any woman who dates a younger man. A Cougar is not

stages, said dating coach Evan Marc Katz, who himself is married to a woman three years older.

Dining Delights Swine flu fails to dent our appetite for pork NEW YORK (AP) – The president of the National Pork Producers Council — the person who represents the people who represent the nation’s pigs — appeared recently before Congress to talk about sales in the swine flu era. He wasn’t happy. “Things look bleak going forward,” Don Butler told America’s lawmakers. A ro u n d t h e s a m e t i m e , t h e following events transpired: • The usually beef-and-beany Taco Bell erected signs at the mouth of its drive-thru lanes, exhorting motorists around the republic: “TOP IT OFF WITH BACON.” • Uncle Jack’s, one of New York City’s signature steakhouses, put out its sidewalk chalkboard of dinner specials. Getting top billing at the beef emporium, for $24,95, was not sirloin, not rib-eye, not filet mignon, but slow-roasted Berkshire pork shank. • The brewmaster of Brooklyn B r e w e r y, u s i n g a n i n t r i c a t e process, crafted 25 experimental cases of — wait for it — bacon ale. In this season of approaching winter holidays and abrupt spikes in ham consumption, this much is worth noting: In the land of the cowboy, the country where beef is held up as the meat that defines the American character, the pig in all its succulent,
edible incarnations seems to be everywhere. “As an interest in food, its origins and its preparation spreads around America, it makes sense that the American palate is widening past just burgers and steaks,” says Sasha Wizansky, the co-editor of Meatpaper, a magazine about meat culture in
America. “Practically every scrap of a pig can be transformed into something tasty,” she says, “and you can find a treasure trove of pork-centric dishes and cured products from around the world.” (Meatpaper ’s first themed issue, earlier this year, focused on the hog.) See "PORK" on Page 24

Dining Delights Pork Continued from Page 23 It’s not as if the pig suddenly arrived on the American scene. From t h e e a r l i e s t s e t t l e m e n t s in Virginia, it’s one of the oldest domesticated creatures to make its way down American gullets. But somewhere along the line, pork was cast as an also-ran, below burgers and chicken in the culinary taxonomy. Sure, ham and ribs and Southern barbecue were continuous staples for the American stomach. But for years, many Americans rarely ventured beyond the Shake ‘N Bake pork chop and its workaday suburban brethren. Even pork’s longtime slogan, “The Other White Meat,” suggested a status akin to how Avis approaches Hertz. Is that changing? Ask Michael LaScola, chef and owner of American Seasons, a Nantucket, Mass., restaurant where you’ll find every part of the pig harvested into unusual recipes. Crispy pig ears, served up like French fries with a side of smoky ketchup? Check. Pig’s head bacon served with eggs sunny side up? Check. Pork-belly fritters with foie gras? Check. And check your cholesterol while you’re at it. “Pork is definitely my favorite thing to play with and to cook with,” says LaScola, who recently co-hosted an event called, yes, Hogtoberfest. “You can go sweet and you can go savory. And either way it works,” he says. “It has a lot of flavor but it’s not gamey like lamb would be. Or it doesn’t have that super blood iron kind of thing like some beef.” And, as meats go, most cuts of pork remain quite affordable — no small matter when you’re trying to feed a family during a recession that’s pushing into its second year. Then, of course, there’s bacon. F r o m We n d y ’ s B a c o n a t o r sandwich to bacon-scented air fresheners and even bacon-flavored mints, the cured and smoked Porkbellicus Americanus has become something of a fetish object for carnivores and lipid lovers. It has reached the point where the words “chocolate-covered bacon” have become, for many, something appetizing. Yo u c a n b u y “ B a c o n n a i s e , ” a condiment that has earned the good-natured scorn of Jon Stewart, and its companion product, Bacon Salt, which has been shipped to bacon-craving American troops serving in pork-free regions. You can even join the “Bacon of the Month Club,” perhaps the only subscription-based pork products service in the land. Or perhaps not. “There are instances in which innovative bacon dishes work ... and then there are times when you don’t really want bacon foam on your dessert or bacon fat in your
