People People planner Globetrotters returning to St. Louis The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will take fan interaction to a new level when the 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. Online voting is now open at harlemglobetrotters.com/rule, where all fans can choose which new game-changing rules they want to see in their hometown. The Globetrotters were the first organization in sports and entertainment to let fans vote on rules when the team introduced the concept last year. Since the fan response was so overwhelming, the team is doing it again – but with a major twist. The 2014 online ballot includes three never-before-seen revolutionary rules: • Hot Hand Jersey – Both teams will have a “Hot Hand Jersey” they can pass among each other. The player who is wearing this jersey will receive double points on made baskets. • Make or Miss – The quarter begins with only two players on the court for each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the game. When they miss, the player missing the shot must leave the court, leaving his or her teammates shorthanded. • Trick Shot Challenge – Via three challenge flags per team, each coach can challenge the other team to make a trick shot. If the team makes the trick shot, they earn five points. If they miss, the other team receives five points. With a roster showcasing stars such as Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang, Hi-Lite Bruton and Dizzy Grant – plus female stars TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Sweet J Ekworomadu – the Globetrotters’ one-of-akind family show features mesmerizing ball handling, an assortment of trick shots, high-flying dunks and precise timing – all with an array of comedy guaranteed to entertain the young and the young at heart. After virtually every game, Globetrotter stars remain on the court for autographs and photographs with fans. Tickets start at $21.00 and are now available at harlemglobetrotters.com, www.ticketmaster.com, the Scottrade Center box office or by phone at 800-745-3000.

Information on group and scout tickets can also be found at harlemglobetrotters.com. The Globetrotters tipped off the North American leg of their world tour with the first-ever events at the new Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine, on Sept. 20 and 21. The tour recommences on Dec. 26, 2013, with the Globetrotters playing more than 290 games in over 250 cities in 47 U.S. states, six Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico through April 2014.

Science Center hosts "Jerusalem" "Jerusalem", a new captivating film about the Holy Land’s most enigmatic city, premiered at the Saint Louis Science Center ’s Omnimax Theater on October 4, 2013. Jerusalem: sacred to half the people on earth; fought over more than any other place in history; conquered and destroyed, rebuilt and reinvented repeatedly over 5,000 years. Now, for the first-time ever, a new giant screen film adventure immerses audiences in a spectacular cinematic journey—soaring high above the Holy Land and plunging deep into the vibrant Old City—so they can experience as never before the iconic sites cherished by billions. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch (“Star Trek into the Darkness,” PBS’s “Sherlock”), "Jerusalem" gives audiences a rare glimpse of the ancient, storied city, as well as exclusive access to revered holy sites and little-known parts of the region—including the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Dome of the Rock, the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee, and the mountain fortress of Masada. Filmmakers were granted special permission in the region’s strict no-fly zone, enabling them to capture the first-ever large format aerial images of the Old City and throughout the Holy Land. “What you’re going to see is an amazing city, stunning in its beauty, and incredibly complex because it is the intersection of religion, history, politics and science,” said Bert Vescolani, President and CEO, Saint Louis Science Center. “It’s just a powerful experience.”

Audiences will discover why this tiny piece of land is sacred to three major religions through the stories of Jewish, Christian and Muslim families who call Jerusalem home. They will also join renowned archaeologist, Dr. Jodi Magness, as she travels underground to solve some of this city’s greatest mysteries. Find out why, after thousands of years, Jerusalem and the Holy Land continue to stir the imagination of billions of people. An original production from Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures and distributed by National Geographic Entertainment, the 43-minute large format film was executive produced by the late Jake Eberts, legendary producer of movies such as “Gandhi,” “Chariots of Fire,” and “Dances with Wolves”; produced by Taran Davies, George Duffield and Daniel Ferguson; and written and directed by Daniel Ferguson. Large format industry veteran Reed Smoot, ASC is Director of Photography. “With this extraordinary film’s immersive experience, audiences will feel as if they are really walking the streets of this beloved and iconic place,” said Lisa Truitt, president of National Geographic Entertainment. "Through the unrivaled beauty, visceral nature and incredible technology of the giant screen format, you feel as if you are experiencing Jerusalem up-close and first-hand," said writer/director Daniel Ferguson. Details for Miley’s BANGERZ TOUR follow her surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live where she announced to fans that she would be launching a tour soon. The announcement on Saturday Night Live comes on the heels of her well-received appearance on the show (re-airing November 9) as both host and musical performer on October 5 that was part of a series of headline-making appearances that supported the release of her new album, Bangerz, on RCA Records. Bangerz debuted at #1 on both the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and the Digital Album Charts with over 270,000 albums sold. Additionally, during release week, Bangerz hit #1 on iTunes in over 70 countries. Both singles, “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop”, off Bangerz have already sold 4.3 million copies in the U.S. alone. “Wrecking Ball” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks. It became Miley’s first Billboard Hot 100 #1 and her fastest-flying top 10 on Radio Songs. “Wrecking Ball” also hit #1 on Spotify where it reached the highest streams ever for any track in the U.S. beating the next highest week by nearly 500,000 plays. This exciting news came just two days after her music video for "Wrecking Ball" became the fastest music video ever to reach CERTIFIED status, VEVO's milestone for videos delivering 100 million views in only 6 days. Cyrus shattered the previous record which she held for “We Can’t Stop,” which was CERTIFIED by VEVO just 37 days after it premiered.

Touhill to host "The Nutcracker" Saint Louis Ballet, the region’s only professional ballet company, presents The Nutcracker December 20-29 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center. Directed by former New York City Ballet principal Gen Horiuchi, this holiday production features the company’s resident dancers who hail from the

nation’s top training programs and beyond. The legendary Nutcracker ballet, appropriate for all ages, features Tchaikovsky’s classic score, spectacular dancing from 21 members of Saint Louis Ballet and more than 80 local ballet students, as well as dazzling special effects. “The Touhill is an ideal venue for The Nutcracker, with a 2600 sq. ft. stage and stunning auditorium with over 1600 seats” said Horiuchi. “It’s a wonderful setting for both the dancers and the audience members.” Young Clara and her mischievous Uncle, Herr Drosselmeyer, concocts a fantasy world for Clara, replete with a growing Christmas tree and a Nutcracker doll that comes to life and battles a Mouse King. With the defeat of the Mouse King brings a fantastical sleigh ride through falling snow and dancing snowflakes. Clara's visit to the Land of Sweets is a showcase of dancing treats presented by the Sugar Plum Fairy herself. Saint Louis Ballet is the region’s major professional ballet company. Under the direction of former New York City Ballet principal dancer Gen Horiuchi, its 21 classically trained dancers are selected in a competitive national audition and come to St. Louis from training programs and ballet companies throughout the world. The company’s repertoire includes full-length ballets such as Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet and Cinderella as well as contemporary work from renowned choreographers s u c h a s G e o rg e B a l a n c h i n e , Christopher d’Amboise, Jessica Lang,

and Pam Tanowitz. In addition to a season of fully mounted productions, Saint Louis Ballet operates a ballet training program and conducts outreach to 1,000 at-risk students through its partnerships with local social service agencies and public schools. Gen Horiuchi has been the artistic director of the Saint Louis Ballet Company and School since 2000. Since 2010, he has directed Gen Horiuchi’s Ballet USA each summer in Osaka, Japan where he presents his own choreography on professional dancers, bringing guests like Miyako Yoshida, former Royal Ballet principal, to dance alongside him to sold out audiences. In 2005 he also directed the Aoyama Ballet Festival in Tokyo, Japan with artists in major companies from around the world. Horiuchi has created more than 20 original works for the Saint Louis Ballet and has spearheaded the growth of the School based in Chesterfield. Raised in Tokyo, Japan by parents who were professional ballet dancers, he won the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, the international ballet competition in Switzerland in 1980 (and since 1993 has been a judge for the competition). He then received a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet. In 1982, he was invited by George Balanchine to join the New York City Ballet, where he became a principal dancer in 1989. He’s danced on Broadway in Song and Dance and was also Mr. Mistoffelees in the musical Cats, both on Broadway and in London's West End. He choreographed the opening

ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan in 1998. In 2005 he was honored in New York City with the Seventh Cultural Bridge Award together with Harold Prince, (director of Phantom of the Opera). Music Tuning in Il-Divo to perform at Peabody Opera House Following a successful week of concerts at New York’s Marquis Theater, Il Divo—the re c o rd - b re a k i n g c l a s s i c a l c ro s s o v e r group that has sold more than 26 million albums worldwide—will bring IL DIVO - A MUSICAL AFFAIR: THE GREATEST SONGS OF BROADWAY LIVE to theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The Live Nation-promoted engagement, which begins on March 28 and concludes on June 7, supports the group’s sixth studio album A Musical Affair. It’s their first compilation of songs inspired by Broadway shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Carousel and West Side Story, and features stellar duet partners Barbra Streisand, Kristin Chenoweth, Nicole Scherzinger, Heather Headley and Michael Ball. Ticket sales began on Nov. 15. The tour will stop in St. Louis on April 22 at the Peabody Opera House. The limited engagement of live concerts in NYC marked the first time the four members sang together on the Broadway stage. The show intertwines the most famous songs from Broadway musicals with the individual theatrical experiences of Carlos, David, Urs and Sébastien. Tony Award- and Grammy Award®winner Heather Headley was a featured guest for the entire run. The quartet members are no strangers to musical theatre; Carlos was cast as Marius in Les Misérables when the show first premiered in Spain in 1993, while David played Rodolfo in Broadway’s La bohème in 2003, which subsequently garnered seven Tony Award nominations. The show was developed by long-term IL DIVO collaborator and artistic director Brian Burke (La Reve and Celine Dion’s residency shows in Las Vegas, Elton John, Rod Stewart and The Killers). The album “A Musical Affair” showcases Il Divo’s signature romantic and emotional interpretation of heartfelt classics like “Some Enchanted Evening” (South Pacific), “Bring Him Home” (Les Miserables), “Tonight” (West Side Story) and more. Il Divo has also provided new arrangements for these much-loved songs, as well as invited familiar Broadway and pop artists to appear on certain tracks as their duet partners. These top musicians lend their talent in songs like “The Music of the Night” (Phantom of the Opera) – LIVE duet with Barbra Streisand; “All I Ask Of You” (Phantom Of The Opera) – duet with Kristin Chenoweth; “Memory” (Cats) – duet with Nicole Scherzinger; and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” (The Lion King) – duet with Heather Headley. “It has been so inspiring to work with such

legendary songs from the world of Broadway musicals for our new album,” says Urs Buhler from IL DIVO. “We can't wait to now perform them in our own style to our fans around the world.” Il Divo is the world's first and most successful classical crossover group. The foursome have sold over 26 million albums worldwide, achieved over 50 number one records, received 160 gold and platinum sales awards in over 33 countries and staged four groundbreaking world tours. The international quartet comprises of tenor Urs Buhler of Switzerland, baritone Carlos Marin of Spain, pop artist Sébastien Izambard of France and tenor David Miller from the United States. As Il Divo first came to fruition in 2003, this year’s album and complementary concert series marks a milestone for the four singers as they commemorate the success of a 10-year career together.

Tickets are on sale now.. The Philadelphia native is touring in support of his fifth studio album, Mountains Of Sorrow, Rivers Of Song (Blue Note Records), the follow-up to 2011’s chart-topping Mission Bell. Numerous dates on Lee’s fall 2013 tour are sold out, including a two-night stand at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium (November 13 and 14) and his November 22 show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Lee’s “World Cafe” session will air on NPR on November 22. His recent performance of the new single, “Chill In The Air,” on “Late Show with David Letterman” can be viewed here. Produced by Jay Joyce (Emmylou Harris, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant), Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song was hailed by The New York Times as a “serenely sure-footed effort from Amos Lee, a singer-songwriter who rarely delivers anything else.” Entertainment Weekly praised his “strikingly soulful voice” while People was struck by two “rootsy beauties”: “Chill In The Air” and “Mountains of Sorrow,” which feature Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin respectively. “Lee makes sorrow shimmer… Like Jackson Browne for another generation, Lee understands the staining traces of love,” said Paste and Elmore noted, “his songwriting has never been better…”Mountains of Sorrow”

This past summer marked the debut of Robin Thicke’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, Blurred Lines (Star Trak/Interscope Records). The collection debuted at #1 on Billboard Top 200 while, “Blurred Lines,” the single, continued its 12-week reign on the Billboard Hot 100 chart making Robin the first artist to take the top spot on both lists since December 2012 and only the 17th act to earn the distinction in the past ten years. “Blurred Lines” scored the highest audience ever recorded and broke records by climbing to #1 on 5 radio charts simultaneously (Top 40, Rhythm, Urban, Hot AC & Urban AC) – the first time this has ever been done by an artist. New York Magazine called the album, “A great record. Period,” while Rolling Stone said, “Robin Thicke sings, writes, produces, plays keyboard and even raps a little on his excellent sixth album.” The second single off of the album, “Give It 2 U” ft. Kendrick Lamar, is available now. Robin Thicke has established himself as one of the most respected singer-songwriters in soul and R&B music today. The musician, composer, and actor, released his critically acclaimed debut album, A Beautiful World, in 2003 under the name “Thicke.” Soon after, he came out with his breakthrough second release, 2006’s The Evolution Of Robin Thicke. Now on the way to double platinum status, Evolution’s mega hit “Lost Without U” became the #1 most played song in Urban Adult Contemporary BDS and topped four Billboard charts simultaneously. The awardwinning multiplatinum superstar returned to center stage in 2008 with Something Else, a joyful and modern tribute to the ‘70s soul and pop records that have inspired an extraordinary career. Revered by critics as one of the best soul albums in years, this ‘70sinspired album dealt with racism, poverty, and love in the hits “Dreamworld,” “Magic,” and “The Sweetest Love.” In December of 2009 Robin released Sex Therapy. The title song was hailed by critics as “the sexiest song of the year.” Robin’s fifth studio album, Love After War was released in December of 2011.

Religion Family from Burma gets first home WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The twostory, five-bedroom house in the 200 block of Independence Avenue is the 119th home Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity has dedicated, and it is the first the Lazum family will call their own. The Lazums — John and Esther and their seven children ranging in age from 1 to 20 — were all present at this week's dedication event. The youngest, Francis, attended in his Batman costume. The family, refugees from Burma, spent 10 years in a refugee camp in Malaysia before coming to the United States in 2010 with the help of Catholic Charities. Originally living in Louisville, Ky., they relocated to Waterloo in 2011. They are the first of Waterloo's growing Burmese population to be able to purchase a Habitat home. T h e Wa t e r l o o - C e d a r F a l l s C o u r i e r reportsmore than 60 people — friends and family, Habitat staff and volunteers, neighbors and members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where the Lazums are parishioners — toured the home and attended the dedication, many offering their congratulations and presenting gifts to the family. The house, built in 1912, is the biggest project IHHFH has undertaken in terms of volunteer hours and resources. It was

completely gutted, the upstairs was reconfigured to add a bedroom and bathroom, new windows were installed, and the boiler in the basement was torn out. That is just a sampling of the work that went into the house. Lindsay Pieters, IHHFH development director, said most projects average between 2,500 and 3,000 volunteer hours. "This house took more than 4,000," she said. "Our volunteers stuck with us till the end on this one. We really appreciate the donations and the volunteers so we are able to keep this house affordable." Irvin Tiller and Butch Stohr, both of Cedar Falls, are two of the volunteers who worked on the house. "This is the biggest," Stohr said. "You name it, and we did it." The pair helped with electric, plumbing, siding and pulling out the plaster and laths on the walls, among other things. "We don't count hours," Stohr said. "It just seems good to volunteer. To see the family here today, knowing this will be their home ... it feels great." "It is a wonderful feeling knowing we've done something like this and then turn it over to the family," Tiller said. "It's precious. "And these are the best people you'd ever

want to work with," he said. As with all Habitat homes, the family is required to put at least 300 hours of "sweat equity" into the house. The Lazums logged more than 685 hours, many of them coming from the three oldest children, Margaret, Dominic and Rosemary. IHHFH Executive Director Linda Morgan spoke during the dedication ceremony, saying the home had been vacant and deteriorating for years before Habitat purchased it in January. "This is so exciting," she said. "Such a big house and such a nice, big family." The Rev. Ken Stecher, pastor of Sacred Heart, blessed the home, and a number of organizations presented the family with gifts, including a Bible from Bethel Presbyterian Church, a sampler from Prairie Rose Embroidery Guild and a new hose and nozzle from Master Gardeners. "You can use this to water the grass, or plants or to hose down a dirty kid," said Kris Pond-Burtis. Lowe's Corp. partners with Habitat International to give Master Gardeners a discount so they can provide a hose at each dedication, she said. The family has been living in a rented house.

When asked to show off her new room, 3year-old Lucy jumped up and headed for the stairs. "Let's go!" she said. Instead, she makes a bee line for her older sister's room where a basket of toys grabs her attention. Margaret and Rosemary, 17, point out where their beds will go and show off their roomy closet. "We are very happy and very grateful," Margaret said. Luke Lazum, 13, will enjoy having his own room in the new house. Though his family struggled in the past, he isn't surprised by their good fortune. "I thought it would happen here," he said. Dominic Lazum put in a lot of hours working on the house, painting, cleaning and helping to install windows. He said it has been amazing to see how the home has turned out. "Better than I expected," he said with a grin. Dominic, 18, is a senior at Columbus Catholic High School and plans to go to the University of Iowa to study engineering. He remembers living in Burma. "It feels good to be here," he said. "My life is a lot better than in the past. It's great. This will be our first house."

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — A federal jury in Delaware has awarded $2.4 million to a New Jersey man who claimed he was abused as a boy more than 30 years ago by a cleric who worked in the Archdiocese of New York. Forty-four-year-old Brian Elliott said he was repeatedly molested by Brother Damian Galligan in several states, including while passing through Delaware during a trip to Virginia in 1981. Galligan is 86 and lives in a Missouri retirement facility. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Last Vegas"

As creaky as an arthritic hip, “Last Vegas” does for four leading stars of the ‘70s and ‘80s what movies like “Tough Guys” and “Grumpy Old Men” did for survivors of Hollywood’s storied Golden Age: It lets them show they can still throw a punch, bust a move, a n d g e t i t o n , a n d t h a t t h e y ’ re n o t q u i t e re a d y f o r the Motion Picture Home just yet. Beyond that, this genteel “Hangover” for the AARP crowd has little to recommend it, though a smattering of funny gags and the nostalgia value of the cast keeps the whole thing more watchable than it has any right to be. One doesn’t exactly expect “Death in Venice” from a movie that begins on a shot of female cellulite jiggling beneath the surface of a Florida community pool. But as various senior-centric pics have proven, from Martin Brest’s delightful caper “Going in Style” to Ron Howard’s “Cocoon,” going gray isn’t automatically an impediment to a screenplay that consists of more than death and Viagra jokes. But “Last Vegas” scribe Dan Fogelman (who wrote the monumentally smarter and shrewder “Crazy, Stupid, Love”) pretty much sticks to the lowest common denominator as he contrives to get four childhood friends together in Sin City for the bachelor party of the last unmarried man among them. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “sexual content and language.” RUNNING TIME: 104 minutes.

"Free Birds"

Every year about this time, millions of turkeys are fattened up so American households can chow them down. But in “Free Birds,” two brave turkeys make it their mission to travel back in time and get their breed off the Thanksgiving menu. In this amusing but occasionally distasteful animated feature from visual effects studio Reel FX, turkeys Reggie (Owen Wilson) and Jake (Woody Harrelson) strive for heroism and bank some notably kooky buddy comedy along the way. We’re introduced to Reggie, a rather astute turkey living on a farm with his lackadaisical flock. With Thanksgiving on the way, he attempts to warn the other birds, with whom he desperately wants to fit in, that they’ll soon be dinner if they don’t wise up. As a result, his flock deems him the “anticorn.” However, they soon discover Reggie is right, then toss him out of the coop to be slaughtered. To his luck, he is scooped up by a peppy little redhead who convinces her father, the president of the United States (who sounds a lot like a Bill Clinton), that Reggie will be the year’s “pardoned turkey.” RATED: PG for “some action/peril and rude humor.” RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"How I Live Now"

Ever since she burst onto the scene in “Atonement,” playing a girl with an overly fertile imagination in a performance that earned her an Oscar nod at age 13, Saoirse Ronan has been one of the most interesting young faces on the big screen. Her precocious, quirky and intelligent look, almost like a pre-teen Meryl Streep, has evolved now into a more mature beauty, and the actress, now 19, remains just as interesting to watch, if not more so. Her latest film, the post-apocalyptic “How I Live Now,” based on the 2004 young adult novel by Meg Rosoff, feels

12

On the Edge of the Weekend

something like “The Hunger Games” sprinkled with a liberal dose of “Pretty in Pink” or any basic teen comingof-age story. Like in “Atonement,” the personal journey unfolds in the shadow of world war — only here, it’s not World War II. No, it’s World War III, which begins almost immediately after Daisy, a self-absorbed young American with bleachedblond hair, fashionably ripped black tights and plenty of eye makeup, arrives in Britain, sent by her father to spend the summer with distant cousins in the country. She’s not thrilled. When friendly cousin Isaac (a sweet Tom Holland) fetches her at the airport, the first thing she does is mock his accent. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “violence, disturbing images, language and some sexuality.” RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Book Thief"

Rarely has a story about an angelic schoolgirl been narrated by Death. But such is the case in the dark, yet wondrous Nazi Germany-set “The Book Thief.” “Here’s a small fact: You are going to die,” we’re told via voiceover by the Grim Reaper as we meet our young heroine, Liesel Meminger, played exquisitely by 13-year-old French-Canadian newcomer Sophie Nelisse. Traveling by train in 1939, Liesel and her ailing younger brother are being taken to a small German town by their poor mother. Once there, they’ll be handed over to their new foster parents. But as a line of blood drips from her motionless sibling’s nose, Liesel’s large blue eyes widen in horror as she discovers her brother has died. Now, she must embrace her new life alone. At her brother ’s funeral, a gravedigger misplaces his “Gravedigger’s Handbook” and Liesel grabs it and tucks it under her coat. This becomes her connection to the past — she cradles the book when she sleeps and keeps a photo of her brother tucked between the pages. Based on Markus Zusak’s 2006 best-selling young-adult novel, “The Book Thief” is a bittersweet wartime drama about an uneducated little girl who grows into a polished author. Directed by Brian Percival (“Downton Abbey”), the film shines a bright light on Nelisse, a fresh young talent whose expressive eyes say everything. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some violence and intense depiction of thematic material.” RUNNING TIME: 131 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Charlie Countryman"

Commercials director Fredrik Bond makes a promising feature debut with “Charlie Countryman” a fanciful crime-drama / romance that gratifyingly eschews strict genre classification. Introduced in voiceover by an unseen Narrator (John Hurt), Charlie Countryman (Shia LaBeouf) is a bit of a lost soul and the death of his mother Katie (Melissa Leo) leaves him completely adrift. After she passes, he sees her in a vision and asks her for guidance — she tells him to go visit Bucharest. Lacking any other direction in his life, Charlie boards a Chicago flight headed for Romania and meets Victor (Ion Caramitru), a Romanian taxi driver on his way home to visit his daughter. Casual conversation reveals a shared love for the hapless

November 28, 2013

Chicago Cubs baseball team, but their newfound friendship is cut short when Victor peacefully passes away on the flight and Charlie experiences another vision: Victor telling him to deliver a gift that he was carrying to his daughter Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood). Charlie agrees, tracking her down at the airport when he arrives and consoling her as best he can before offering to assist with the disposition of her father’s body. Later at the opera house where he watches her play cello in the orchestra, Charlie meets Gabi’s menacing ex-husband Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), who has unfinished business with Victor over a missing videocassette that he now plans to settle with Gabi, but she turns him away. Later that night on a circuitous wander around the city, Charlie’s convinced he’s falling in love with Gabi, but she remains aloof and mysterious about her relationship with Nigel. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some brutal violence, language throughout, sexuality/ nudity, and drug use.” RUNNING TIME: Running time: 103 minutes.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

A considerable upgrade over the first “Hunger Games” movie, “Catching Fire” comes across more like a remake than a sequel. In the adaptation of the second installation in Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy, there’s certainly plenty that has changed. Rebellion against the totalitarian rule of President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the 12 districts of Panem is growing. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is now a beloved hero with the weight of celebrity on her shoulders. And Philip Seymour Hoffman, bless him, has found his way into the proceedings. Yet the general plot — a journey from Katniss’ poor hometown of District 12 to a climactic game of human hunting in “the arena,” with high-speed train rides and training sessions in between — is identical to the first “Hunger Games.” More has shuffled behind the camera, and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is much the better for it. Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”) has taken over directing from Gary Ross, whose poor handling of the first film didn’t stop it from becoming a sensation. Lawrence has given the film (the budget was nearly doubled) a more settled environment heavy on greys and a more appropriately grave emotional atmosphere. These are kids being forced to kill other kids, the franchise seems to have realized. “Catching Fire” opens with Katniss back in District 12, haunted by the experiences of her first Hunger Games. There, too, is her flame Gale (Liam Hemsworth), who’s slaving away in the mines. (Hemsworth, a nonentity in both films, makes about as convincing a miner as Ben Stiller’s Zoolander did.) But Katniss’ success in the Hunger Games was partly due to her for-publicity-sake romance with her co-winner Peeta (Josh Hutcherson, who seems about half the height of the screen-dominating Lawrence). President Snow, aware of the put-on, insists they keep up the charade to help pacify the uprising. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language. RUNNING TIME: 146 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Nebraska" continues allure of black and white By JAKE COYLE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Black-and-white movies are a rarity today, of course, but they nevertheless cling to a persistent and exceptional existence among more flashy fare at the multiplexes. Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska,” which opens Friday in limited release, follows several notable films this year that have opted for monochrome over color, including Noah Baumbach’s New York tale “Frances Ha” and Joss Whedon’s Shakespeare-on-the-cheap “Much Ado About Nothing.” Filled with handsome, austere plains photography, “Nebraska” is a Midwest road trip film about an aging father (Bruce Dern) and his son (Will Forte). As a studio release (Paramount) and a film set in contemporary times, “Nebraska” is unusual among modern black-and-white films, which have tended to be independently made or period pieces. Usually black-and-white is attempted by

ambitious young filmmakers or veterans with enough industry pull. Payne has said his “Nebraska” was budgeted for less because it was in black-and-white and considered to have less box-office potential as a result. Yet audiences have proven open-minded about black-and-white: The crowd-pleasing 2011’s “The Artist” won best picture without the benefit of color or sound, just as did Steven Spielberg’s black-and-white “Schindler’s List” (1993). As an iconoclastic group, modern blackand-white movies stand out for their classical photography and their willful connection to an earlier period of filmmaking. Here are a handful of memorable examples: • “PAPER MOON”: Peter Bogdanovich made 1973’s Depression-era father-daughter tale “Paper Moon” as well as 1971’s Texas coming-of-age story “The Last Picture Show” in black-and-white. Both films, particularly the Midwest-set “Paper Moon” (a cherished favorite of Payne’s), were inspirations for “Nebraska.” Bogdanovich once said color made the Texas town of “The Last Picture

Show” “too pretty”: “There’s something mysterious and enriching about black and white. Color is too realistic,” he said. • “MANHATTAN”: New York has probably inspired more black-and-white films in recent decades than any other place. Woody Allen has often utilized black-and-white, including the newsreel style of “Zelig” and the Fellini-esque “Stardust Memories.” 1979’s “Manhattan,” shot by Gordon Willis, famously begins with Allen’s Isaac Davis practicing an introduction: “To him, no matter what the season was, this was still a town that existed in black and white and pulsated to the great tunes of George Gershwin.” • “PI”: The New York of Darren Aronofsky’s 1998 debut bears none of the romanticism of Allen’s “Manhattan.” Made incredibly cheaply and filmed illicitly on the subway, the high contrast black-and-white of “Pi” — blotchy and grubby — is more in the surreal style of David Lynch’s horror film “Eraserhead.” Aronofsky was inspired by Frank Miller ’s comic book “Sin City,” which years later was made into a highly stylized, mostly black-and-

white film. A world without color can be a strange, unsettling place. • “STRANGER THAN PARADISE”: Jim Jarmusch has been one of the most frequent practitioners of black-and-white filmmaking. In 1984’s minimalist “Stranger Than Paradise” — as well as the jailbreak drama “Down by Law,” the Western “Dead Man” and the absurdist vignette series “Coffee and Cigarettes” — Jarmusch’s colorless palette only adds to his deadpan sensibility. • “THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE”: T h e C o e n b ro t h e r s a n d t h e i r u s u a l cinematographer, Roger Deakins, fashioned one of the most beautiful black-and-white films of recent years in this 2001 film, joining noir shadows with the constant cigarette smoke emanating from Billy Bob Thornton’s dour barber. But sometimes great love of black-and-white photography can suffocate a film with nostalgia. Steven Soderbergh’s “The Good German” (2006), while a loving ode to films like “The Third Man,” felt stuck in the past.

"About Time" close to perfect By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge There are two things you need to know before you read the following review of "About Time:" 1) It’s not one of the week’s newest releases and 2) It’s not a perfect movie. Now that you know these things, you’ll soon understand why I feel it’s important that you keep them in mind. It might be a fanciful picture about love, loss, time travel, and the ever maddening, mystifying mundane, but it’s also one of the best pictures you’ll see in this or any year. The lone film to hit box office marquees this week was "Best Man Holiday," Malcolm Lee’s (Spike’s cousin) sequel to the hit 1999 film about a large group of friends celebrating life’s lessons and occasions. While I’m sure

it’s a great time, I chose not to see the film because I hadn’t seen the original. I don’t know how I missed it, honestly, but I do have my little quirks. So that wraps up Point #1 from above. I opted to go back to a film from two weeks ago that needs your love and your support. "About Time" is the story of Tim (breakout Everyman Domhnall Gleeson), a ginger-haired Brit who lives in a charming manor home in Cornwall with his mum (Lindsay Duncan) and dad (Bill Nighy, one of England’s great acting treasures). Tim’s life seems truly, truly happy. They spend time together as a family on the shore. Tea time and Ping-Pong are group experiences. Even oddball Uncle Desmond (Richard Cordery) is included, particularly because of the affection Tim’s sister, Kit Kat (Lydia Wilson), feels for him. Her free spirit vibe definitely cancels out

Uncle D’s stuffy, fashion-conscious attitude. On his 21st birthday, Tim is amused to be told by his dad that the male members of their family are able to travel in time. They’ve been doing it for years. A dark place, clenched fists, and a determined focus are all that it takes to accomplish something that every human being since the dawn of time has wished was possible. But "About Time," which I prefer to think of as “About Tim”, is not a science-fiction fantasy. It’s a fully-grounded, lovely look at our desires to right as many wrongs and keep our loved ones close forever and ever. Tim soon learns that there are consequences for messing around with changing the past. Rushing back to prevent a car accident can change the future of your baby’s gender. Skipping too far back to stop you from smoking

that first cigarette can stop them from being born in the first place. Tim’s dad carefully and delicately teaches him to use his gift according to a fine code of conduct that is both encouraging and finite. He can’t use it to live forever and there are specific milestones that, if tampered with, will destroy you from grief, if not something more sinister. Tim focuses accordingly on romance and he soon finds his adventure in lockstep with Mary (Rachel McAdams), an American that’s sweetly insecure and equally in love with him. Gleeson’s Tim is too noble to resort to using his turn-back-the-clock routine for anything as nefarious as stealing love or money. He just uses it – as generations before him did – to enjoy life and make the little things in it standout more noticeably for the blokes he fancies most. Joshua McGuire, Vanessa Kirby,

November 28, 2013

Margot Robbie, and Tom Hollander co-star. And as far as my Point #2? There’s really no such thing as a perfect movie. "Citizen Kane" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" sure come close. So do "Jaws" and "The Wizard of Oz." So what is "About Time" isn’t perfect? It’s as wonderful an effort as I can imagine and it gives you nothing negative to even play Devil’s Advocate against. The film is said to be the last we’ll see from writer/director Richard Curtis (Love Actually) and that would be a shame. We’ll get to see much more of Nighy, though, especially when he’s awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in February. About Time runs 138 minutes and is rated R for language and some sexual content. I give this film four stars out of four.

Travel For The Edge The holidays are here, and the Museum of Science and Industry’s 72nd annual Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light open on November 14, 2013. This year’s colorful theme is inspired by the Museum’s new temporary exhibit—Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club— which celebrates the innovation of Walt Disney’s legacy with more than 300 artifacts from Disney’s 90-year history. In the Rotunda, MSI’s 45-foot Grand Tree is decked out with more than 30,000 red, green and white twinkling lights and hundreds of ornaments and trimmings. Images of Mickey, Minnie and Pluto can even be seen helping decorate the tree! Beneath the tree, guests will find gifts addressed to their favorite Disney characters, complete with a huge sleigh. Around the Museum’s Rotunda, vintage Disney characters are featured on four giant banners that surround the tree, while guests can enjoy a mix of popular Disney hits and festive holiday tunes, and “snow” falling every half hour. The Museum’s Main Floor displays more than 50, 12-foot trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities representing their diverse culture and holiday traditions. This custom began for local families in 1942 as a United Nations Day salute to the Allies during World War II, and in its first year, only a dozen trees lined the Museum’s halls. Now the exhibit has grown into a forest of dazzling trees and homemade displays, created by dedicated volunteers. The celebration runs through January 5, 2014. On the weekends and select weekdays, guests can also enjoy performances of various ethnic dance and choral groups on the Holiday Stage. Trees and Traditions Each Christmas Around the World tree offers insight into the diverse customs that exist during the holiday season or the culture of a particular country. The Danish tree features woven paper baskets in red and white, the

Traditionally, these would hold candies, nuts or Danish peppernut cookies – a beloved spiced Christmas treat in Denmark. The tree also features ornaments shaped as hand muffs, icicles and northern star, referring to the cold northern climate of the country. The Puerto Rican tree is decorated with a number of musical instruments of all types. Guitars, maracas, tambourines and gϋiros (a wooden fish-shaped percussion instrument) all adorn the tree to symbolize the Parrandas, musicians who go door to door during the six weeks of Christmas celebrations. In addition,

Poinsettias, which are indigenous to Central America, are featured across the branches. Three golden wise men statues are situated beneath the tree, paying homage to the Three Kings— Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar—who are separately celebrated on January 6 in Puerto Rico. The Kenyan tree features large carved wooden masks and animals, like zebras, monkeys and giraffes, to represent the African culture. Colorful, intricately beaded ornaments pay homage to the traditional outfits of the Maasai people of Kenya. Also adorning the tree are maize harvest scenes, as

November 28, 2013

maize is one of the country’s major crops. Holidays of Light, now in its 18th year, is a multicultural display of holidays that celebrate light or enlightenment. The display highlights the traditions of the Chinese New Year, Diwali (a Hindu and Sikh festival), Kwanzaa (celebrated by African Americans), Ramadan (celebrated by Muslims), Hanukkah (a Jewish holiday),Visakha Puja Day (a Buddhist holiday), and St. Lucia Day (a Swedish tradition). Festive Performances and Great Gift Ideas The Holiday Stage offers joyous

performances from the talented groups that represent the different cultures and countries showcased in Christmas Around the World. Each weekend, guests are entertained by various dance troupes and choirs spreading the joyful spirit through traditional ethnic dance, song and pageantry. In addition, choral performances from area schools will delight guests with holiday favorites during select weekdays. All performances take place on the Holiday Stage on the Museum’s Main Floor, and a full schedule is available at msichicago.org. Please note that performances are subject to change, so check the on-site schedule for up-todate information. Don’t forget to make a stop at the Holiday Shoppe, which is full of great gifts and trinkets for family and friends, including unique ornaments representing cultures around the world and special Disney merchandise. Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light are included in Museum Entry, as are all performances. An additional ticket is required for Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. Visit msichicago.org/disney for details and to purchase tickets. The Museum is open every day, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Museum will offer extended hours, until 5:30 p.m., on the following days in 2013: November 15 – 17; November 22 – 24; November 29, 30; December 1, 7, 8; December 14 – 23; and December 26 – 30. The Museum is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light are all presented by Walgreens.

Travel If you really want to get away from it all By LAURA SCATURRO Of The Edge The weather has spoken – temperatures are dropping daily and the leaves are dropping by the bucketful. Now is the perfect time to begin thinking about your next vacation in a warm, sunny climate such as Punta Cana, located in the Dominican Republic on the east coast of the island of Hispaniola. What do seek to do on your next beach vacation – new cultural experiences, a snorkeling or scuba adventure or just a comfortable beach chair under a palm tree with the sounds of the ocean in the distance? There are an abundance of all-inclusive resorts along the eastern coast of the Dominican and with the help of the internet to begin your research and a travel agent to confirm your choices, you will find the perfect resort for the type of vacation you are seeking. I can only speak to one resort, Now Larimar, located in Punta Cana, which my family and I stayed at in early October to attend my son and daughter-in-law’s destination wedding. My knowledge of the Dominican Republic before my trip was minimal although I know they export a lot of baseball players – perhaps over 10 percent of today’s players in the United States. Last year’s roster included four players from the Dominican including Cardinals pitcher, Carlos Martinez. A former player you may recall, also hailed from the country – Albert Pujols. The Dominican Republic sits on the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola, which lies 45 nautical miles east of Cuba and 73 nautical miles west of Puerto Rico. The following are just a few of the observations made on our trip that may assist you when making your own plans to visit the Dominican Republic. The flight to the Dominican was nonstop from St. Louis and surprisingly only four hours long. We chose to upgrade our tickets to preferred status for the flight. This allowed us to board the plane first, enjoy two complimentary drinks and deplane first. One thing we were not prepared for was the completion of the international embarkationdisembarkation card required to enter the country. The flight attendants handed out this form after the complimentary drinks. The form’s print was teeny-tiny and in three languages including English. The take-away: don’t forget your glasses, pen and designate someone to keep a clear head to help with the form. Upon our arrival at the Dominican airport we were greeted with steps to deplane. We

Getting up before dawn and heading out on the beach will allow you to catch a breath-taking sunrise in the Dominican Republic. were not in Kansas (or St. Louis) anymore. Once into the airport, an open air building, we presented our form, which we prayed was completed correctly, our passport, and a $10 bill to enter the country. I was unsure if two $5 bills would work but I didn’t want to chance it – we were after all, out of the country, so we all made sure we had a $10 bill. After getting through the lines, submitting our form and reuniting with our luggage, we easily found our travel agency representative in his flowery tropical shirt who showed us to our air conditioned bus that would take us to our resort. The take-away: there are steps on this vacation, lots of walking and you will need a $10 bill. There is no money required to leave the country. Once we arrived at the resort we were greeted with champagne that somewhat

buffered our unfortunate wait for our room. They indicated that they were still cleaning it. They suggested we go have a bite to eat and to give them just a few minutes. We had read many reviews on the internet before we left on our vacation from people who had encountered a similar wait so we were prepared mentally. We walked around the resort to get acclimated and had a lovely lunch. After a two hour wait, we were shown to our room which was ideal and clean. The take-away: One Dominican minute equals approximately 20 minutes. Stay with your carry-on luggage which should include suntan lotion and a bathing suit which you can change into and enjoy the pool or beach while waiting for your room. Read the reviews on the internet for whichever resort you choose. After getting settled in our room and

November 28, 2013

stowing all of our personal items such as jewelry, cash, passports in the room’s safe, we hit the ground running – straight for the beach. The resort provided a one page printed brochure of the daily activities and entertainment and we planned accordingly. There were several things to choose from on property including beach games, a foam party in the pool, Spanish lessons, dancing lessons, archery, water volleyball, water aerobics, etc. The take-away: you can do nothing but relax, read and soak in the sun. If you want to participate in activities you will find the experience fun and the resort crew will make you feel very welcome. There are a variety of excursions that you can enjoy during your vacation for additional fees. A representative from our vacation company was located on property and was available to explain the various day adventures such as parasailing, helicopter rides, snorkeling or shopping in Santa Domingo – the capital. The take-away: although your food, drinks and entertainment are included on property at this resort if you want to go on an excursion be prepared for the purchase. Our travel agent suggested paying cash for these excursions and to refrain from using a credit card if possible. There were seven beautifully decorated restaurants in the resort offering an array of choices for dining. The drinks offered on property were top shelf choices. The takeaway: the menu always included something recognizable for the less adventurous and foods were not heavily spiced one way or the other. Some restaurants required a dress code in the evening – no flip flops or shorts and some did not. Men should bring a dress pair of khakis, collar shirt and closed shoes. Punta Cana is also known as the Coconut Coast and in the early morning you can see the resort landscape team trimming coconuts from the trees. Also in the morning, there was a beach grooming machine that would pick up any sea grass that was left during high tide. The take-away: get up before dawn at least one morning and venture out to the beach – you will see a magnificent sunrise that will start your day with a smile in the Dominican Republic.

The Arts

The art of Deb Douglas

Pop culture and high art collide For The Edge The St. Louis Artists’ Guild is proud to present a solo exhibition of works on paper by Deb Douglas. Drawing from the realms of both art history and pop culture, Douglas uses found and vernacular imagery to cryptically represent aspects of her personal life. Playfully integrating high and low art, she incorporates elements such vintage cookbooks, retro glamour girls, and advertising into her formal explorations of color, pattern, and form. “By placing seemingly disparate imagery together within the confines of the picture plane, I create relationships and meaning that speak to who I am,” says Douglas. About the Artist: Deb Douglas works in several media, including painting, drawing and collage. She has a BA in Studio Art and Painting from Truman State University and a MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She currently the Program Director of Saint Louis University’s Art History program. The galleries Douglas has exhibited at include Duane Reed Gallery, Elliot Smith Contemporary Art Gallery, SOHA Gallery, Hoffman LaChance Contemporary, Mad Art Gallery, Xen Gallery, andPerlow-Stevens Gallery (Columbia, MO). She has been profiled in New American Painting, No. 23 (1999) and No. 41 (2002) and Art Saint Louis Magazine (2000). Her exhibitions have been reviewed by

Sheldon exhibit spotlights farm life The Sheldon Art Galleries presents Sandi Haber Fifield: Between Planting and Picking, now through January 4, 2014 in the Gallery of Photography. Connecticut-based photographer Sandi Haber Fifield photographed family-owned farms across the United States from 2009 to 2010. Her lyrical images use the agricultural landscape to create a complex vocabulary of visual associations that speak equally about the humanity of these places and about artistic self-discovery. Haber writes: “I’m drawn to the authenticity of small farm life that congregates along the margins in myriad cast-off moments: sunlight on muslin seed bags, wooden crates, plastic mesh, buckets, pots, hoses, a lunar planting calendar, quirky signage. As I made more and more pictures, the candid beauty and improvised quality I discovered in the unkempt edges of these small farm environments became a focus. I hope it is within the banal details, unsuspecting and unnoticed, that a narrative unfolds, showing the beauty in the randomness and the repurposing. To me, there is a metaphor in the unending cycle of growth and harvest for my own image making.” Sandi Haber Fifield received her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. She has widely exhibited her photographs in galleries throughout the United States and been included in exhibitions at museums

such as The Art Institute of Chicago, The DeCordova Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Oakland Museum, The Southeast Museum of Photography and The St. Louis Museum. Her work is held in several private and public collections, including The Brooklyn Museum, The George Eastman House, The High Museum, The Library of Congress, The Los Angeles County Museum, The Museum of Modern Art and The New Britain Museum. In 2009 Charta published Haber Fifield’s first monograph of grids and multiple image installations, Walking through the World. Between Planting and Picking (also Charta), was released in March 2011. Additionally, Haber Fifield’s work has appeared in Fabrications: Staged, Altered, and Appropriated Photographs (Anne Hoy, Abbeville, 1988), Picturing California (Therese Heyman, Oakland Museum/Chronicle Books, 1989), Defining Eye: Women Photographers of the 20th Century (Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, the Saint Louis Art Museum), The Photography of Invention (Joshua P. Smith, Merry Foresta (MIT Press) and her recently released monograph, After the Threshold (Kehrer Verlag, 2013, Vicki Goldberg, essayist). Sandi Haber Fifield’s work is represented in New York by Rick Wester Fine Art and in Boston by Gallery Kayafas. The not-for-profit Sheldon Art Galleries exhibits works by local, national and international artists in all media. Over 6,000 square feet of the galleries’ spaces on the 2nd floor are permanently devoted to rotating exhibits of photography, architecture, jazz art and history, and children's art. A sculpture garden, seen from both the atrium lobby and the connecting glass bridge, features periodic rotations and installations, and the Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg Gallery on the lower level features art of all media. The Sheldon actively supports the work of St. Louis artists in all mediums and features a dedicated gallery with museum-quality exhibits by St. Louis artists, past and present.

Kemper Museum to host the works of Rashid Johnson A young man in suit and tie gazes warily at the camera, taking its measure, betraying nothing, sly wit reserved for the title. In Self Portrait with My Hair Parted Like Frederick Douglass (2003), Rashid Johnson pays homage to the 19th-century abolitionist, putting himself in dialogue with this renowned cultural icon but also crafting his own myth of artistic selfcreation. This fall, Washington University's Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will present Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks, the first museum exhibition to survey the career of the Chicago-born, New York-based artist. In works that span photography, painting, sculpture and video, Johnson confronts old assumptions about the African American experience while exploring, often playfully, the complexities, contradictions and singular histories that comprise black identity today. The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 20 through Jan. 6. Though Johnson frequently alludes to historical and cultural figures, he also incorporates commonplace objects from his own childhood, a process he describes as “hijacking the domestic.” Plants, books, record albums, photographs, soap—all become the working materials for conceptually loaded and visually compelling artworks. Death by Black Hole “The Crisis” (2010) includes books by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and social critic Harold Cruse, while Triple Consciousness (2009) serves as a virtual altar to Al Green’s 1975 Greatest Hits. In The Shuttle (2011), Johnson layers references to comedian (and one-time presidential candidate) Dick Gregory and his own father. Self Portrait Laying on Jack Johnson’s Grave (2006) juxtaposes the historical and contemporary, depicting the artist collapsed across the heavyweight champion’s gravestone.

Dining Delights The key to great pork chops is in the size By ELIZABETH KARMEL Associated Press Everyone loves the idea of a grilled pork chop, but they often fall short of expectations. And I blame the butcher! Many chops and steaks are cut so thin it is almost impossible not to overcook them, even for a seasoned griller like me. When chops and steaks are cut thin, say 1/2 inch or less, the price is appealing but the end result may not be to your liking. It is far better to buy one thicker steak or chop and split it than buy two thinner cuts. I have found that a boneless center-cut pork chop is the answer. And it always exceeds expectations. You can buy the chops from your butcher or cut them yourself from a pork loin. Just make sure that they are a generous 1-inch thick. The next secret is to brush the chop all over with olive oil. My motto: Oil the food, not the grill! The olive oil not only helps prevent the meat from sticking to the grates, it also promotes caramelization, which in turn helps lock in the meat’s juices. If you don’t brush the chop with oil, the natural juices will evaporate as the meat cooks. A quick sprinkle of kosher or sea salt and you are ready to grill. I recommend a medium direct heat and 5 to 6 minutes per side. Finally, it is essential that you let the pork chops rest at least 5 minutes so the juices will redistribute, making your chop tender and juicy. This means no cutting into the chop — even to test for doneness! Use an instant read meat thermometer or learn visual clues for doneness. It is much better to serve a warm pork chop that has had time to rest than a piping hot chop that hasn’t had time to rest and loses all of its juices once you cut it. Now that you’ve mastered grilling the chop, you are ready to take your outdoor cooking repertoire to the next level by making a compound butter. A compound butter is simply softened (unsalted) butter that is flavored with herbs, spices and almost any flavor ingredient and seasoning. I love compound butters so much that I devoted a whole chapter to them in one of my cookbooks. Compound butters can be sweet or savory and are a quick and easy way to dress up any meal. The beauty of a compound butter is that when it melts on hot food, it seasons the food like a complicated sauce, but without any of the time needed to make one. Even better, the flavors are much brighter because they haven’t been cooked. Since pork chops are synonymous with fall for me, I like to serve a chipotle-pumpkin seed butter on top of my chops. The autumnal orangered color of the butter studded with green pumpkin seeds smiles with Halloween colors, making this a perfect dinner for all your ghosts and goblins. The butter balances and rounds out the smoke and the heat from the chipotle chili and the adobo sauce, and the toasted green pumpkin seeds add texture and eye appeal to the butter. I use fleur de sel or Maldon sea salt in all of my butters to add a nice little crunch to the butter and the finished dish. The butter can be made up to a week in advance and refrigerated or frozen until ready to use. I like to refrigerate the butter until it is hard, slice it into medallions and freeze

24

them in an airtight container. That way, I have “coins” of compound butter any time I need them. The butter also is really great on grilled or baked squash, almost any vegetable, and any fish, poultry or meat, so I usually double the recipe. PORK CHOPS WITH CHIPOTLE-PUMPKIN SEED BUTTER Start to finish: 1 hour Servings: 4 For the chipotle-pumpkin seed butter: 1 stick unsalted butter, softened 1 small chipotle chili in adobo sauce, drained and chopped finely 1 tablespoon lightly toasted and cooled hulled pumpkin seeds (often called pepitas) 1/2 teaspoon ancho chili powder 1/2 teaspoon Maldon salt flakes or fleur de sel For the pork chops: 4 boneless center-cut pork chops, 1-inch thick Olive oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper To make the butter, in a medium bowl mash or stir the butter until it is smooth and slightly fluffy. Add the chipotle, pumpkin seeds, chili powder and salt. Mix together, mashing with the back of a fork to make sure all the ingredients are incorporated. Taste, then adjust with additional salt, if needed. Set a 6-by-12-inch sheet of kitchen parchment or plastic wrap on the counter. Spoon the butter onto it to form a log. Roll the butter up, then smooth out to form a round log about 5 inches long. Refrigerate until firm and easy to cut into rounds, about 15 minutes. The butter can be made in advance and stored, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to a week (or in the freezer for up to 3 months). When ready to prepare the pork chops, prepare the grill for direct,

Remove the butter from the refrigerator and cut four 1/2-inch slices off of the log (you will have some butter left over) and set aside. Meanwhile, use paper towels to pat the pork chops dry. Brush with a thin coat of olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Place the chops directly on the cooking grate and grill for 5 to 6 minutes per side. The chops will be done when they feel “firm” to
