The sounds of George Winston Pianist to bring his Winter Show to SIUE as part of Arts & Issues Series By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

T

he SIUE Meridian Ballroom will be filled with the melodic music of solo pianist George Winston Dec. 13 when Winston returns to the Arts and Issues stage for a performance of his Winter Show. The 2 p.m. concert is sponsored by TheBank of Edwardsville. Winston's Winter Show will include melodic fall and winter type songs, some of Vince Guaraldi’s “Peanuts” pieces, compositions inspired by the New Orleans piano and the stride piano traditions, and songs from his latest album, “Spring Carousel - A Cancer Research Benefit.” Born in 1949, Winston grew up mainly in Montana and spent his later formative years in Mississippi and Florida. His favorite music was instrumental rock and instrumental R&B including Floyd Cramer, The Ventures, Booker T. and the MGs, and Jimmy Smith. Winston writes in a “QnA” on his website that he had taken a few piano lessons as a kid, but wasn't interested in it and quit. It wasn't until 1967 when he heard the Doors that he had a renewed interest in playing and actually began playing the organ. “I learned chords and music theory, and studied recordings of organists, especially the great Jazz organist Jimmy Smith,” Winston's website states. “Then in 1971, when I heard recordings of the great Stride pianist Thomas “Fats” Walker, I switched immediately to solo piano. I never played any music from the great European classical tradition nor have any desire to. My approach is entirely North American, rather than European and I treat the piano as an Afro-American tuned drum.” Although Winston primarily plays R&B piano currently, he spent a great deal of time in the early 70s playing stride piano. He explains on his website that stride piano basically means that the left hand “strides” between a bass and a chord while the right hand plays the improvisation. “It is an older jazz piano tradition, played most predominantly between the 1920s and the early 1940s, but the tempos are much faster, there is much more improvisation, and more harmonic development,” Winston notes. He moved from playing stride piano to folk or rural folk piano, a melodic style he came up with in 1971 when he switched from organ to piano. “I was mainly working

4

on stride piano, and I wanted something that was complimentary to that – melodic and simpler, and using the sustain sound of the piano that I love,” Winston states online. “The majority of songs on my recordings are in this style...” Since 1972 Winston has released 13 solo piano albums. His more recent releases include “Love Will Come -The Music Of Vince Guaraldi Vol 2” (2010) and “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2 – A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit” (2012). His current album, “ Spring Carousel – A Cancer Research Benefit” was released in 2014. Winston is well-known for his concern for social issues and has released several albums benefiting numerous organizations. In 2001, he released “Remembrance – A memorial benefit” for those affected by 9/11, and the single, “Silent Night” was released in 2013 to benefit the organization Feeding America. Those who attend Winston's concert at SIUE on Dec. 13 are asked to support a local food pantry by bringing a donation of canned food to the concert. Collection baskets will be located at the Meridian Hall entrance and all food collected will be donated locally to a food pantry. Arts & Issues tickets can be ordered on-line at artsandissues. com or in-person at the Morris University Center (MUC) Welcome Desk. The MUC Welcome Desk is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Welcome Desk is closed on Sunday. To place your order by phone call 1-866698-4253.

For The Edge

Above, the cast of Sublime Intimacy. Below, art for Kids Night at the Fox. of five friends: an ex-Hollywood actor, a psychology professor, a painter, an actress and a Broadway musical performer whose lives were elevated, touched and indeed changed by their love of a dancer and his dance. While each person's story is different, they overlap, intertwine and inform each other as the lives and tales of friends often do. We the audience, like the characters, are allowed to share in the intimate beauty of the art form through the performances of "The Dancer" as the play unfolds. Sublime Intimacy, isn't that what we all want? • A Very Manly Christmas with Jim Manley’s Mad Brass & Rhythm, December 11-12, 7:30pm & 9:30pm Ferring Jazz Bistro (Jazz St.

In the past few years, Manley has branched out as a bandleader, composer/arranger, and clinician, maintaining a busy playing schedule with nearly 4,500 engagements in the last fifteen years. For these special Bistro shows, Manley has put together a screamin’ seven-piece instrumental

group dubbed Mad Brass & Rhythm to bring you Holiday cheer! • Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O, December 16-19, 7:30pm & 9:30pm Ferring Jazz Bistro (Jazz St. Louis is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization 3536 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO 63103 $30; $10 Students h t t p : / / w w w. j a z z s t l . o r g / experience/artists/matt-wilsonschristmas-tree-o-2/ It was a snowy day in May when Matt Wilson, Jeff Lederer and Paul Sikivie gathered at Maggie’s Farm recording studio to spread Christmas cheer. The result of that gathering is Matt Wilson’s Christmas Tree-O, a collection of everyone’s favorite holiday tunes that’s destined to be added to holiday music collections all over the globe. “ Wo n d e r a n d i n n o c e n c e , gaudiness and cheer: can it be any surprise that the jazz drummer Matt Wilson thrives around the holidays? His Christmas Tree-O…does more or less what you’d expect, batting around holiday standards with a mischievous but sentimental air… In any case, the band, with Paul Sikivie on bass and Jeff Lederer on reeds, represents something more than a side project or a symptom of seasonal opportunism. It has its own gait and style.” (The New York Times) • Jazz St. Louis Big Band plays Ellington’s Nutcracker, December 21-23, 7:30pm & 9:30pm Ferring Jazz Bistro (Jazz St. Louis is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization 3536 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO 63103 $25; $10 Students h t t p : / / w w w. j a z z s t l . o r g / experience/artists/jazz-st-louis-bigband-plays-ellingtons-nutcracker/

The shore is rendered in soft warm blues and thick buttery yellows. Swimmers wade into the water as a heavy black cannon trains a gleaming barrel towards the darkening horizon. “Beach at Walmer” (c. 1938) is a picture of stubborn vigilance, all the more resonant for the circumst ances of it s creat i on . Painted on the English Channel shortly before the outbreak of World War II, it is the work of Winston Churchill, the future prime minister and a chief architect of Allied victory, but then a lonely voice in British Parliament warning against the Nazi storm. Featured are canvases re p re s e n t i n g f i v e d e c a d e s o f Churchill’s paintings, drawn from public and private collections in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. outside of the United Kingdom. It represents an incredible opportunity, for museum-goers and students of history alike, t o e x p l o re w h o , a s a n a r t i s t , Churchill truly was,” he said. ‘Audacity is the only ticket’ Today, Churchill is remembered as the “British Bulldog” who lifted spirits amidst the London Blitz, rousing Great Britain to what he memorably called its “finest hour.” Many consider his “Iron Curtain” speech, which diagnosed the dangers of postwar Soviet expansionism — and which was delivered at Westminster College — to mark the beginning of the Cold War. Ye t C h u r c h i l l a l s o w a s a dedicated amateur artist. He first took up brushes in 1915 at age 40, after being ousted as First Lord of the Admiralty during B r i t a i n ’ s d i s a s t ro u s G a l l i p o l i campaign. “I had great anxiety and no means of relieving it,” he recalled in his 1921 essay “Painting as a Pastime” (later the basis of a book). But in the weeks that followed, he watched with interest as his sister-in-law painted in the garden. She urged him to give it a try. For the rest of his life — at home, on holiday and even, occasionally, on the battlefield — Churchill’s oils were rarely far from hand. Painting was a joy and a consolation, a source of sustenance and an intellectual challenge. He became an avid museum-goer, befriended such contemporary painters as Lavery and Paul Maze, and copied works by Paul Cézanne and John Singer Sargent, among many others. “There really is no time for t h e d e l i b e r a t e a p p ro a c h , ” h e observed. “Two years of drawing lessons, three years of copying woodcuts, five years of plaster casts … these are for the young.” For the self-taught latecomer, “audacity” as he once famously said, was “the only ticket.” ‘Painting is like a battle’ Churchill often discussed his craft in military terms. “Painting is like a battle,” he mused, “and trying to paint a picture is, I suppose, like trying to fight a battle.” But the battle on canvas, at least, was seldom explicitly political. Of his nearly 575 completed paintings, 350 a re l a n d s c a p e s o r s e a s c a p e s . Instead, Churchill grappled with the materials, techniques and traditions of painting itself. a battle to capture everything at once, the parts and whole, in all their simultaneous complexity. Still, as “Beach at Walmer” demonstrates, Churchill’s painting was not immune to external circumstance. “Tower of Koutoubia Mosque” (1943), the only painting Churchill was able to complete during World War II, commemorates a trip to Marrakech, Morocco, which he visited with Franklin D. Roosevelt following their historic Casablanca Conference. Churchill later gave the painting to Roosevelt as a symbol of their friendship, and Marrakech — with its historic architecture and views of the Atlas Mountains — would prove a favorite subject to which the painter frequently returned. In 1951, Churchill delivered a similar canvas to Harry S. Truman, calling it “about as presentable as anything I can produce.” Such self-deprecation, especially in a world leader, is perhaps strategically charming, yet the remark does seem to capture the mix of pride and genuine humility with which Churchill viewed his art. Indeed, for a man of his gifts and responsibilities, the opportunity to indulge an honest enthusiasm must have felt a profound relief. As the “pastime painter” once remarked to Sir John Rothenstein, director of the Tate Gallery: “If it weren’t for painting, I couldn’t live. I couldn’t bear the strain of things.” The exhibition remains on

view through Feb. 14, 2016. The museum is located on Washington University’s Danforth Campus, near the intersection of Skinker and Forsyth boulevards. Regular hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. the first Friday of the month. The

Science Center hosts Mission: Mars

On Nov. 21, the Saint Louis Science Center is opened Mission: Mars, an interactive exhibition designed to immerse visitors in the exploration of Mars in the current day and in the future. Developed by the Saint Louis Science Center in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA’s Johnson Space Center, this unique exhibition will engage visitors in two separate but connected locations within the facility. The opening will be marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium at 9:30 a.m. “We are living in an incredible time with the exploration of Mars, and want to give our visitors the chance to experience the technology behind this exploration first-hand through Mission: Mars,” said Christian Greer, chief education and programs officer for the Saint Louis Science Center. “Through this immersive exhibit, visitors will be able to engage in the exploration of Mars by actually learning how to program rovers that are modeled like the real rovers that are on the planet right now. We hope this one-of-a-kind exhibit ignites curiosity and inspires our younger visitors to continue to support and participate in space exploration.” Guests have two portions of the exhibit to choose from to begin their Mars experience. In the Saint Louis Science Center’s main building (located at 5050 Oakland), guests can engage with one area of the exhibit, named Mission: Mars – Control. In this portion of the exhibit, guests experience current day exploration operations by assuming the role of an engineer at a NASA Engineering Lab, designing and building a robotic rover to explore Mars. They will have the opportunity to program a rover and experience the challenges of driving it in a simulated time delay, while seeing the planet from the perspective of a rover. Mission: Mars is free to all visitors. There will be paid, educational programs offered to groups in both exhibit locations. For more information, please visit slsc.org.

Religion Religion briefs Bevin to alter marriage licenses

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Gov.-elect Matt Bevin has vowed to protect a county clerk's religious objections to same-sex marriage. Bevin spoke publicly about his plans Friday after winning the Kentucky governor's election with more than 52 percent of the vote. He will take office next month. One lingering issue is Kim Davis, the Rowan County clerk who is locked in a legal battle over issuing same-sex marriage licenses. State law requires county clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally qualified couples. That now includes same-sex couples. But Davis believes it would be a sin for her to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple. After she refused to do so, a federal judge threw her in jail for five days in September. She now wants to be able to keep her name off of marriage licenses. Davis has sued current Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear for not accommodating her beliefs. Beshear has said he lacks the authority to remove the names of the county clerks from marriage licenses, arguing only the state legislature can do

Oregon judge goes before disciplinary commission

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A judicial disciplinary commission is hearing accusations against an Oregon judge who refused to perform same-sex marriages. The two-week hearing that started Monday will determine whether Marion County Judge Vance Day should face sanctions. The Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability says Day committed several ethics violations. They include screening marriage applicants to exclude same-sex couples, hanging a portrait of Adolf Hitler in the courthouse, asking lawyers for money and allowing a convicted felon to handle a gun. Day has denied that he violated judicial ethics rules, and says the rules are unconstitutional. He says he's being targeted because of his Christian beliefs.

Multiple fatalities in church van crash near Washington

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — The pastor of 16 people in a church van involved in a fiery crash says they were headed to a Sunday evening service in suburban Washington. Jose Santos Jimenez, the pastor of Iglesia Ministerio de Dios Unido, says an elderly couple and a 6-year-old girl who were riding in the van were killed and another passenger, who was in the late stages of pregnancy, lost her baby. Police said the driver of a pickup truck that veered across the center line into the path of the van was also killed. Santos was leading a service at his church in the Maryland suburbs when he got a phone call about the crash, and he rushed to the hospital. He spent most of Sunday night and all of Monday visiting and praying with the injured members of his small congregation, which has members from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Panama.

"By the Sea"

How do we picture the private lives of Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt? If they were to, say, wind along the Mediterranean coast in a top-down convertible with Serge Gainsbourg lilting on the radio, would that do the trick? In the opening of "By the Sea," written and directed by Jolie Pitt, they are the picture of glamor we would expect from the stars, playing a married couple who breeze into a remote seaside cove in the South of France. The spell, however, is broken when they reach the water. "I smell fish," says Jolie Pitt's Vanessa, stepping out of the car. T h e 1 9 7 0 s s e a s i d e s e t t i n g c o u l d h a rd l y b e m o re enchanting, but something is rotten on the French Rivera. Married 14 years and childless, Vanessa, a former dancer, and Roland, a struggling writer, arrive — not with the jaunty lightness of the opening — but as if seeking a shore on which to hurl their on-the-rocks marriage. After checking into their hotel suite, they immediately, wordlessly begin rearranging the furniture and placing the desk by the window. They're like actors setting a scene; the feeling of artifice never leaves "By the Sea," which transpires almost entirely within the suite's walls in a stylish, detached kind of melodramatic malaise. They quickly settle into a strange routine: Roland spends his days drinking with the local bartender (the excellent Niels Arestrup) and failing to write, while Vanessa mopes around the hotel room. They speak little, in fraught exchanges that refer only vaguely to the prior trauma that hangs over them. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexuality, nudity and language." RUNNING TIME: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Love the Coopers"

"Love the Coopers" is pretty formulaic as far as Christmas dramedies go, but there are always going to be those movies that just get to you — despite, perhaps, your best judgment. Modern holiday movies, with their aggressively unhappy families and sanitized Hallmark sentimentality, occupy an interesting space in entertainment. Big, starry ensemble casts assemble to fight and laugh and cry and realize something profound about life, love and the season of giving with a backdrop of magazine perfect interiors, idyllic snowfall and a soundtrack of perfectly curated carols. They're not high art and they're not trying to be, either. Their predictability can be comforting and grating at the same time, especially when most of these stories spend so much time indulging in the discontentedness of its well-off characters. In "Love the Coopers," from director Jessie Nelson ("I Am Sam"), four generations of an upper middle class family go about their day separately before gathering for their annual Christmas Eve dinner at the home of Sam (John Goodman) and Charlotte (Diane Keaton). Most are dreading it. Sam and Charlotte are putting on one last show before deciding to announce their separation. Their daughter, Eleanor (Olivia Wilde), is drinking the hours away in the airport with a stranger (Jake Lacy) to minimize her time at home. Their son, Hank (Ed Helms), is trying to hide the fact that he doesn't have a job. And Charlotte's jealous sister Emma (Marisa Tomei) has resorted to shoplifting to avoid having to actually spend money on her sister and subconsciously to avoid the evening altogether. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, language and some sexuality." RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"The 33"

Movies are forever trying to capture the essence of the human spirit, and by that measure, it's hard to imagine there was ever a story more tailor-made for the movies than the incredible 2010 Chilean mine rescue. If the details are hazy in your mind, just go to YouTube right now and watch the first miner reach the surface in that tiny capsule they built. We dare you not to cry. And that's actually part of the problem with "The 33," directed by Patricia Riggen. The real-life saga was so visceral — and so visual, unfolding as it did on live TV — that it's tough to beat the memory. You could say that such a movie writes itself, but that's not true — a cinematic portrayal of an event so recent needs to do something creative to move things forward, present a new angle, offer a different perspective. "The 33" is well-meaning, well-crafted and faithful to the source material, but ultimately it feels disappointingly formulaic. We begin with a happy scene, a festive retirement party. There, we meet many of the men, including Mario Sepulveda (Antonio Banderas), the most charismatic of the bunch; he asks supervisor Don Lucho (Lou Diamond Phillips) if he can work the next day, though it's his day off. In the village, we also quickly meet Dario Segovia (Juan Pablo Raba), a troubled miner with an addiction problem, and the caring older sister he neglects, the empanada-seller Maria (Juliette Binoche, in an underdrawn role that never quite seems to fit). Alas, these hasty interchanges don't give much meaningful insight into the characters (indeed, the script's thin characterizations are the weak link of the film.) The next day, the men arrive at the mouth of the mine. "Is this the only way in?" asks newcomer Carlos. "The only way in, and the only way out," replies Banderas' Mario, doing the most with a line that's a little too obvious. And then the mine collapses, with frightening violence. Now we have, essentially, two dramas unfolding: Above ground, where the desperate families have set up camp, and below, where 33 men are trapped 2,300 feet down in searing heat. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a disaster sequence and some language." RUNNING TIME: 127 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"The Night Before"

Boosted by its stellar cast and playful take on "A Christmas Carol," ''The Night Before" is a coming-of-age stoner-buddy comedy laced with warm holiday cheer. Make no mistake: it's still a silly romp thick with dope smoke and dumb jokes, but the performances are solid, and there's some surprising sentiment behind the wacky antics. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie play best friends bidding farewell to their 10-year tradition of partying together on Christmas Eve. Ethan (GordonLevitt) is determined to make their last night epic, especially since Chris (Mackie) is on a hot streak in his football career and Isaac (Rogen) is expecting a baby. Isaac's wife, Betsy (the hilarious and soon-to-be everywhere Jillian Bell), gives her husband a special gift in honor of his last Christmas Eve with his pals: a box filled with "every single drug in the whole world." Well, you can imagine how things go from there. Isaac dips into the stash as soon as they leave the house. Rogen is predictably over the top as he samples each substance, falling deeper and deeper into a delusional haze. This presents ample opportunity for gross-out moments, like when he barfs in church or lets his nose bleed into a woman's martini. Meanwhile, Ethan surprises his friends with tickets to the hottest party in town, the one they've dreamed of getting into since their holiday tradition began.

December 3, 2015

But first, Chris needs to pick up some weed. (Somehow, Betsy left that out of the box.) This sets the trio on their adventure, bringing them in contact with the mysterious Mr. Green (a brilliant Michael Shannon) for the first of several meetings. He introduces Chris to "the weed of Christmas present." Later in the film, the weed of Christmas past and future is smoked. (Poor Dickens.) A l o n g t h e w a y, t h e g u y s m e e t u p w i t h E t h a n ' s ex-girlfriend (Lizzy Caplan) and her friend (Mindy Kaling), Chris' mom (Lorraine Toussaint), and Rebecca Grinch (Ilana Glazer). Each of these actresses' appearances is a little holiday treat that helps balance the dumb-guy debauchery. Miley Cyrus, James Franco and Tracy Morgan also make welcome, well-played cameos. Isaac maintains a steady level of wasted-ness throughout the film as he frets about fatherhood. Rogen channels this with ease, and with considerably more maturity than in 2007's "Knocked Up." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "drug use and language throughout, some strong sexual content and graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Carol"

"Carol" is an overwhelmingly beautiful film. It looks like a dream, it sounds like whispered want, and it feels like falling in love in all its stomach turning terror and ecstasy. Even its title rolls elegantly off the tongue. In "Carol," director Todd Haynes, his filmmaking team and his formidable leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara have birthed that rare, precious creation where the substance, the story and the emotions all stand on equal footing to the film's loveliness — easily making it one of the year's best. The story, adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel "The Price of Salt," is both straightforward and deeply complex. It's about two lost souls at very different ages and stations finding each other by chance and altering the course of the other's life. It's just a glance — longing at first sight — across a crowded Christmastime department store when Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a gawky shop girl in a tattered Santa hat spots Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), dripping in tasteful furs and corals and regal confidence. Carol sees Therese too, and they hold each other's gaze for a wistful moment. But their mutual, immediate attraction isn't that simple. It's New York City in the early 1950s and same sex relationships are, at the very least, not a widely accepted public affair. There's more at stake than just the possible heartbreak of any passionate relationship in this setting. To complicate matters further, Therese doesn't yet know herself that well, and Carol is navigating a divorce from her husband Harge (Kyle Chandler), with whom she shares a child. Carol's desires are known even to her husband but largely unspoken. Therese is just discovering hers. It makes the courtship more subtle than most, but this isn't a film about flouting societal norms on some mass scale. It's about these two people and the profound heartbreak of not fitting in the time period that their lives unwittingly occupy. There is a fascinating contrast in these two women, separated by 16 years in real life. Mara's Therese is a girlwoman, styled, in some cases exceedingly overtly, to look like Audrey Hepburn in the '50s. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

Chris documents his every move for his social media profile, but secretly feels his popularity may be coming at too high a price. With his Juilliard pedigree and dramatic gravitas, Mackie has poise and charisma to spare, so it's oddly comic to hear him utter such lines as, "I just fame-(expletive) that hipster chick!" Gordon-Levitt brings his usual charm and accessibility to Ethan, who faces the hardest holiday challenge: What will Christmas Eve be like without his buddies? They've moved on with their lives; why hasn't he?

innate elegance and effervescence, though — she is beautiful, but awkward. When she speaks, she doesn't project so much as swallow her clipped words. She is intelligent, but uncomfortable in and alienated from this world. That otherness is even more evident when she's with her sweet and conventional boyfriend Richard (Jake Lacy). In striking contrast to Therese, Carol is the epitome of feminine, w e l l - h e e l e d re f i n e m e n t . H e r magnetism and grace inspires obsessions and devotion from those around her — her husband, her devoted more-than-a-friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) — even as she redirects her focus to others. But it's the love story that's at the center. Carol remarks that it's as though Therese has been "flung out of space." It could apply to both.

December 3, 2015

Alone, they are lost. Together, they're ablaze. Few working directors today are able to inventively meld high style and high art in the way that Haynes does, even as he returns to a familiar period ("Far From Heaven") and actress in Blanchett ("I'm Not There"). There are some distracting oddities, including Carrie Brownstein in a very minor role, despite prominent screen credit and Carter Burwell's score, which sounds distinctly like a Philip Glass composed-original, but those are minor quibbles in an otherwise splendidly realized film. Period movies often can't escape the era in which they're made. The eyebrows, the makeup, and even the faces all seem to point to another time. "Carol" looks like it was actually made in its day.

The Arts EAC holiday exhibit combines shopping and art By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Looking for a unique Christmas gift? Look no further than the Edwardsville Arts Center’s Holiday Show which will feature unique ceramic cups made by artists from across the country as well as glass cups and ornaments, jewelry and a unique adult coloring book made by the EAC from local artists’ drawings. The Holiday Show begins Nov. 27, Black Friday, and runs through Jan. 1. EAC Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball explained that Goshen Coffee is sponsoring this year ’s EAC Holiday Show, formerly called Grab N Go, which will have the same concept as Grab N Go had in the past. “It’s the same idea where you can come and buy something and take it that day. We’re just not calling it Grab N Go,” Tidball said. “And we are also focusing on a few select things. We’re going to have ceramic cups from artists all over the country and glass cups and ornaments and jewelry.” The Holiday Show will feature a wide variety of ceramic cups. “We have 39 ceramic artists doing cups,” Tidball noted. She also pointed out that they had reached out to artists near and far to provide ceramic cups

We do have a lot of the same artists display a lot which is good, but it’s fun to get some things from out and about too.” Ti d b a l l e x p l a i n e d t h a t t h e y chose to focus on cups due to its universal appeal from artists. “ Wi t h a c u p y o u c a n h a v e things that are nice for the house that are just nice and comfortable to hold, but you can also talk about conceptual ideas that make a statement about the world,” she pointed out. “A lot of potters do that with cups. It’s a thing that everybody can relate to and so many artists do such interesting things with cups.” Comparing the difference in just two of the artists’ cups s h e h a d r e a d y t o d i s p l a y, Ti d b a l l p o i n t e d o u t h o w Linda Christiansen’s woodfired ceramic cups were “really simple and functional” compared to that of Bryan Hopkins. “They are so thin,” Tidball said admiring Hopkins’ cup. “He takes a cast of wood and then contrasts it with some kind of modern packing material and shows the difference b e t w e e n n a t u re a n d t h e m a n made. That’s my reading of it anyway.” In addition to the ceramic cups, a full selection of Reinhard Herzog’s beautiful glass o r n a m e n t s w i l l re t u r n . “ We sell those throughout the year,” Tidball noted. “They are really popular.” “And we have ornaments from four or five other glass artists,

Then we also have about 10 jewelry artists.” Also featured in the show will be the works of Doug Petlzman, Kyle Johns, Mike Moran, Danielle Vilhard, Sue Huitt and Nancy Davis. One of the other new parts to the Holiday Show will be an adult coloring book made by the EAC with drawings donated by local artists. “Yes, one of the exciting parts of this show is that we’re making our own coloring book,” Tidball noted. “So we’ve collected drawings from about 50 to 60 artists from all local ar tists – h igh school kids, some artists that are in our gallery show and other artists that we know. They all did black and white d r a w i n g s a n d w e ’ re g o i n g t o compile a coloring book that will be for sale.” The EAC holiday show that opens Nov. 27 but will have an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 3. We are extremely proud of the work Ron has done as a student, as an alumnus and as a teacher, and we’re thrilled to welcome The Black Rep back to campus for the coming season.” “This season has something for everybody,” Himes said. “Music and drama; the personal and the political; new works and old favorites — they’re all part of the theater, and they’re all part of human experience.” The Black Rep 2015-16 ‘Edison Series’ Jan. 13-31, 2016 “Sunset Baby” Wr i t t e n b y D o m i n i q u e Morisseau, “Sunset Baby” tells the story of Kenyatta Shakur, a onetime Black Revolutionary a n d p o l i t i c a l p r i s o n e r. Music Tuning in Fox to host Experience Hendrix Tour

The 2016 Experience Hendriz Tour will stop at the Fox Theatre for an 8 p.m. show on March 8. Live at the Fabulous Fox Tuesday, March 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $100, $85, $60, $50, $40, $30 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Hailed by critics and fans alike as the ‘Guitar Event Of The Year,’ the multi-artist celebration known as the Experience Hendrix Tour is set to return in 2016. These special concert performances present legendary artists who join together to pay homage to Jimi Hendrix. This next edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour will encompass twenty seven performances this coming February and March, stopping in more than two dozen cities along the east coast, midwest and southern states. Now in its second decade, the tour celebrates the musical genius of Jimi Hendrix by bringing together a diverse array of extraordinary musicians, ranging from blues legend Buddy Guy to Black Label Society and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, as well as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa and many others. Billy Cox, bassist for both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys, anchors a rhythm section that provides the foundation for exciting renditions of such signature Hendrix favorites as “Purple Haze” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer in both rock and blues, and expanded the possibilities of what could be achieved with the electric guitar, forever altering the course of music history. Likewise, the Experience Hendrix Tour is developing a rich history of its own. By 2004, the first Experience Hendrix Tour came to fruition with a three-date string of shows on the west coast, starting in Hendrix’s hometown of Seattle. By 2008, the Experience Hendrix Tour had become a full-fledged, coastto-coast expedition that continues to date, without showing any signs of slowing down Audiences are presented the opportunity to see great artists paying homage to Hendrix and collaborating with each other in ways they’d never do in their own live shows. “It is such an honor to be asked back for another run,” says blues/gospel/rock guitar prodigy Jonny Lang, who has played every tour since 2008. “The music of Jimi Hendrix speaks to each of us in indelible ways. It’s another chance to celebrate his legacy.” Multiple Grammy-winner and 2015 Kennedy Center honoree Buddy Guy, who was both an inspiration to as well as a personal friend of Jimi’s, is also ecstatic to partake in his sixth Experience Hendrix Tour. The stance he takes is akin to that of a missionary: “Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest guitar players ever and we all need to keep his music alive.” "It's an honor to celebrate Jimi Hendrix's legacy and greatness with so many other amazing players, who have become great friends and family to me,” echoes Zakk Wylde. “His influence and inspiration will forever be undeniable!" Platinum-selling solo artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been on every Experience Hendrix Tour since the beginning. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve

been listening to Jimi Hendrix,” said Shepherd. “He has had an enormous influence on me as both a guitar player and a songwriter. He was always trying new things and pushing musical boundaries, which enabled and encouraged me to push the boundaries in my music. The Experience Hendrix Tour is an amazing tribute to the greatest guitar player of all time, featuring some of the greatest musicians in the world today.” Dweezil Zappa returns for his third Experience Hendrix Tour. “I've always been a great admirer of Jimi Hendrix,” he details. “My dad told me some great stories about playing with him. Jimi's ability to express himself so completely with an electric guitar is very inspiring to me. There was an authentic expression of his personality in the music. And that rings true to every generation. He wasn't following trends. His playing was soulful and exciting and surprising.” The 2016 Experience Hendrix Tour also includes guitarist Mato Nanji of Indigenous, vocalists Henri Brown and Noah Hunt, and drummer Chris Layton, who was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Additionally, special guests will include the likes of Keb’ Mo’, Doyle Bramhall II, Ana Popovic and the Slide Brothers. More special guests will be announced in the coming weeks. Please check jimihendrix.com and local listings for announcements. As in years past, Fender Music Instruments is the primary tour sponsor. Fender and Experience Hendrix L.L.C. have long enjoyed a s u cc e s s ful re latio ns hip —an association that traces back to

Hendrix transforming the Fender Stratocaster into the dominant instrument of rock and roll music. Marshall Amplifiers and Dunlop Manufacturing, whose gear is an integral part of the tour’s backline, also sponsor the Experience Hendrix Tour together with Axe Heaven IK Multimedia and Hal Leonard. Profoundly popular with fans and critics alike, an earlier edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour inspired Doug Walters of the Charleston City Paper to rave, “It was an inspired night of great energy and incredible playing. Nothing but good vibes filled the Performing Arts Center. Jimi’s spirit and music could not have been honored more.”

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

A plate of assorted items from Tucanos Brazilian Grill in St. Charles, including: prime rib, sweet and spicy chicken thigh, turkey wrapped in bacon and parmesan chicken.

Tucanos Brazilian Grill By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Arby's claims they have the meats, but that's debatable. I know who really has the meats and it's Tucanos Brazilian Grill in St. Charles. Tucanos is located at 1520 S. 5th St. Suite No. 100 in St. Charles, more specifically, the southeast corner of exit 229 off of I-70 and if you haven't been there you are missing out. An infinity of grilled meats and a buffet and salad bar filled with Brazilian dishes, this place is a glutinous heaven. Kelly and I recently went for our friend Casey's birthday and it was definitely a celebration. There were six of us altogether in her group, but when we left we had probably combined to gain enough weight to make a seventh. Let me breakdown the way Tucanos works. For $22.95 a person for dinner you get what is called the churrasco. There is also a lunch version for $15.95 Monday through Friday also. The churrasco entails full access to the salad bar and buffet and an unlimited amount of grilled meats and vegetables continuously delivered on skewers by the wait staff. It's a simple concept, at the table is a small wooden cylinder, on one end it is red and the other it is green. Green means eat, red means stop. The stick is yellow in the middle, but I never got what that meant. I guess it's eat with caution because you're going to eat a lot. We went on a Wednesday night and it wasn't too busy. Casey and his wife Jessica, as well as Kelly, had all been before, but I was a Tucanos rookie, as were Casey's friends from out of town. We weren't ready for what was next. I went and got a large salad to

24

start me off. There were options like roasted corn, mangos and pineapples available to put on the salad which was cool. When I returned to the table I got the full offerings of Tucanos though. Casey turned the stick to the green end and we were off to the races. Garlic parmesan chicken, sweet and spicy chicken thigh, turkey wrapped in bacon, center cut sirloin wrapped in bacon, prime rib, beef brisket, chicken hearts, pineapple, Brazilian sausage, top sirloin, beef tenderloin, parmesan encrusted vegetables, salmon, fried white fish

On the Edge of the Weekend

and pork loin. I think that about covers what was piled on my plate straight from skewers. I don't know though, after awhile I began to enter a meat coma, developed the meat sweats and was just eating unconsciously. The grilled pineapple was one of the best. Called Abacaxi on the menu, I'd never eaten grilled pineapple like this before and boy have I been missing out. It had a sensational taste. The bacon wrapped turkey and sirloin were outstanding, too. Even the chicken hearts were really good.

December 3, 2015

The only thing that we all agreed wasn't the best was the brisket, which was more comparable to Italian beef the way it was served. To bring the best information to you I wasn't done yet either. I heaved my meat-logged body out of my seat and waddled to the buffet to grab a couple of other Brazilian delicacies — fried bananas and fried cheese bread. This was my first experience with fried bananas, and again, I've been missing out. With a golden brown breading encasing the banana, I think frying it actually releases

the sugars from the fruit because it became exorbitantly sweeter. It was more like a dessert in taste. The fried cheese bread was fantastic, too. They were small, but really had a rich, sweet taste. Don't even ask how many calories I ingested, pounds would probably be the more appropriate food measurement when you go to Tucanos. I will admit, as good as it is, it's a special occasion place. No one would be able to eat that much food on a regular basis — even me. It's a great place to go with a large dinner group. I believe the more people you have at your table the more likely the servers are to come to you quicker, because they can empty a whole skewer of meat at one time. Another great aspect of Tucanos is for an additional charge you can add the seafood specials to your churrasco, getting things like grilled shrimp, grilled lobster and sea scallops wrapped in bacon. I think that's the move the next time I go. I didn't just enjoy the food at Tucanos, I had fun. It's just a fantastic experience. The atmosphere includes a large bar and even larger dining area, with bright lights and bright colors. A n d h e re a l l t h e s e y e a r s I thought Brazil just offered hot girls in bikinis, now I know more importantly they have sensational food. To learn more about Tucanos, visit www.tucanos.com. There are other locations around the country, but the St. Charles location is the only one in Illinois or Missouri. Don't plan on doing much after going to Tucanos besides sprawling on the couch, which is what I did, but don't get me wrong, Tucanos is a fantastic place to visit when you gotta eat.
