Globetrotters returning to St. Louis The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will take fan interaction to a new level when the 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. Online voting is now open at harlemglobetrotters. com/rule, where all fans can choose which new game-changing rules they want to see in their hometown. The Globetrotters were the first organization in sports and entertainment to let fans vote on rules when the team introduced the concept last year. Since the fan response was so overwhelming, the team is doing it again – but with a major twist. The 2014 online ballot includes three never-before-seen revolutionary

rules: • Hot Hand Jersey – Both teams will have a “Hot Hand Jersey” they can pass among each other. The player who is wearing this jersey will receive double points on made baskets. • Make or Miss – The quarter begins with only two players on the court for each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the game. When they miss, the player missing the shot must leave the court, leaving his or her teammates shorthanded. • Trick Shot Challenge – Via three challenge flags per team, each coach can challenge the other team to make a trick shot. If the team makes the trick shot, they earn five points. If they miss, the other team receives five points. With a roster showcasing stars such as Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang, Hi-Lite Bruton and Dizzy Grant – plus female stars TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Sweet J Ekworomadu – the Globetrotters’ one-of-a-kind family show features mesmerizing ball handling, an assortment of trick shots, high-flying dunks and precise timing – all with an array of comedy guaranteed to entertain the young and the young at heart. After virtually every game, Globetrotter stars remain on the court for autographs and photographs with fans. Tickets start at $21.00 and are now available at harlemglobetrotters. com, www.ticketmaster.com, the Scottrade Center box office or by phone at 800-745-3000.

Dunham returning to St. Charles The nation’s number one comedian Jeff Dunham and his beloved cast of characters announce the kick off of the winter leg of their 2013 “Disorderly Conduct” worldwide t o u r. T h e w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 international concert series begins on December 26, 2013 in Toledo, OH and continues through February 28, 2014 in Champaign. IL. Dunham is scheduled to appear at the Family Arena in St. Charles on Feb. 7. Tickets are available through MetroTix.com or by calling 1-314534-1111. Fans all over the world can look forward to a new jam-packed show with more laughs than ever before. Dunham’s famed troupe of sidekicks are back: Walter the Grumpy Retiree, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, the beer-fueled redneck Bubba J, the manic purple creature Peanut, the spicy pepper from south of the border José Jalapeño, and Peanut’s own ventriloquist dummy Little Jeff, a mini-version of the ringmaster himself. Dunham and his comedic sidekicks most recent Comedy Central onehour special entitled “Minding the Monsters,” is the fifth in a string of record-breaking specials. “Minding

the Monsters” takes its audience into the ultimate haunted house where you can see Walter transform into something grumpier than he already is, watch Bubba J rise from the dead, meet Peanut’s alter ego, The Purple Avenger of the Night, and his spicy sidekick, and witness Achmed literally dressed to kill in an outfit that would terrify the most terrifying terrorist! It debuted on Comedy Central to 7.5 million viewers, making it the most watched special of the year for the network. Upon its release on DVD, it was the #1 comedy DVD on Amazon.com and exceeded platinum sales within 6 days. It has already reached triple platinum status. The amazing rise of Jeff Dunham continues apace, with 2013 having seen Jeff continue to pack arena-sized venues. Dunham and his sidekicks are preparing for their sixth trip to Europe this fall, stopping in the U.K., Germany, and Belgium. In 2013, fans will also get the chance to see Achmed the Dead Terrorist like he's never been seen before! This December, Jeff Dunham will premiere his very first animated feature “Achmed Saves America,” starring the world’s most beloved, failed bad-guy! In this full length animated movie, Achmed is having a very bad day... After accidentally blowing himself up, the world's most incompetent suicide bomber finds himself whisked away from

his homeland by a giant bald eagle and dropped off in... Americaville, USA. There, mistaken by the kindhearted Wilson family for a visiting French exchange student, "The Little Skeleton That Couldn't" bumblingly plots to destroy the town and all of its "infidels". But, once he's exposed to the sweet things in life -including all-you-can-eat buffets and frozen yogurt -- Achmed's campaign of hate turns into a patriotic AllAmerican lovefest. The phenomenal international success of Dunham and his cohorts have been driven by his Comedy Central specials, which set global records for both ratings and sales. Dunham’s 4th Comedy Central TV special “Controlled Chaos,” premiered to a staggering 8.3 million viewers overall making it the most viewed cable show that night. The global TV event enjoyed a never-before simultaneous same day worldwide debut in a dozen countries. Dunham continued to break ratings records at the end of 2011, when The Bio Channel’s premiere of Jeff Dunham: “Birth of a Dummy” became the network’s top rated telecast ever.No wonder The New York Times Magazine declared Jeff Dunham “the most successful comedian working in America.” Dunham was recently named Pollstar’s #1 Comedy Tour in North America for three years running as well as their Top Worldwide Tour for two years in a row.

Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival planned For The Edge

T

he producers of the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival have announced the 2014 headliners. The 11th annual festival running April 24-26 features Arturo Sandoval, The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra, Reggie Thomas and Rodney Whitaker. The festival opens on Thursday for two sets at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. at Jazz at the Bistro with an all-star quartet featuring pianist Reggie Thomas, bassist Rodney Whitaker and St. Louis area greats Willie Akins on tenor sax and Montez Coleman on drums. Reggie Thomas’ soulful, hardswinging brand of piano has made him one of the most in-demand pianists and educators in the country. A veteran of the bands of Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and many others, Rodney Whitaker is one of the leading performers and teachers of jazz double bass in the United States. Tickets for Thursday evening performances are on sale Monday, November 18, at 10 a.m. They are $33 and are available through the Jazz St. Louis Box Office at 314-2894030, MetroTix at 314-534-1111, or online at www.metrotix.com. The festival continues at the Touhill Performing Arts Center with Arturo Sandoval on Friday and The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra on Saturday. Both headliner concerts at the Touhill begin at 8 p.m. and feature opening-act performances by the UMSL Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jim Widner. Sandoval is considered one of the most dynamic live performers of our time. The Cuban-born trumpeter, pianist and composer has earned many accolades, including nine

Grammy Awards, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy. Since Basie's passing in 1984, Thad Jones, Frank Foster, Grover Mitchell, Bill Hughes, Dennis Mackrel and now trumpeter Scotty Barnhart have led the Count Basie Orchestra and maintained it as one of the elite performing organizations in jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra has won 17 Grammy Awards and 20 Downbeat and Jazz Times polls - more than any other big band in jazz. Tickets for Arturo Sandoval on April 25 and The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra on April 26 are $20$40 each and are on sale Monday, November 18, at 10 a.m. through the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at www.touhill. org; or by phone at 314-516-4949. The three-day festival encourages the musical education and growth of the participating students by interaction with these internationally acclaimed jazz artists. “In addition to celebrating professional jazz musicians in our headline concert performances,” said Jim Widner, director of the Jazz Studies program at UMSL and artistic director of the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival, “we focus on nurturing the talent of young musicians with jazz student performances and clinics.” The goal of the festival is to encourage the musical education and growth of the participating students by interaction with internationally acclaimed jazz artists. Now in its 11th year, the festival has grown to accommodate as many as 800 students from more than 40 schools from across Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Texas. For three days, students participate in adjudicated performances and clinics. The clinics include one-on-one sessions and critique

from Jazz’s finest. In past years, budding musicians learned from such jazz greats as: Clark Terry, Lou Marini, John Pizzarelli, Ron Carter, Russell Malone, Marilyn Maye, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, Buddy DeFranco, Tom Scott, Mulgrew Miller, Jon Faddis, Conrad Herwig, Shelly Berg, Peter Erskine, Chris Vadala, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Doc Severinsen Christian McBride and many others. Daytime performances and artist clinics are free and open to the public. Jazz St. Louis promotes, presents

and preserves jazz in greater St. Louis through performance, education and outreach activities that build youth and adult audiences for jazz. More than 120,000 students have been served by Jazz St. Louis’ nationally recognized education and outreach programs. Through concert presentations at Jazz at the Bistro, the Touhill and other area venues, Jazz St. Louis has become the largest presenter of jazz in the Midwest and is one of the largest presenters of this unique American

art form in the country. For more information, please visit www. jazzstl.org. Now in its 11th season of presenting the finest in the performing arts to the St. Louis region, the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center opened its doors on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus in September 2003. The venue features the 1,600-seat Anheuser-Busch Performance Hall and the 350-seat E. This past summer marked the debut of Robin Thicke’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, Blurred Lines (Star Trak/ Interscope Records). The collection debuted at #1 on Billboard Top 200 while, “Blurred Lines,” the single, continued its 12-week reign on the Billboard Hot 100 chart making Robin the first artist to take the top spot on both lists since December 2012 and only the 17th act to earn the distinction in the past ten years. “Blurred Lines” scored the highest audience ever recorded and broke records by climbing to #1 on 5 radio charts simultaneously (Top 40, Rhythm, Urban, Hot AC & Urban AC) – the first time this has ever been done by an artist. New York Magazine called the album, “A great record. Period,” while Rolling Stone said, “Robin Thicke sings, writes, produces, plays keyboard and even raps a little on his excellent sixth album.” The second single off of the album, “Give It 2 U” ft. Kendrick Lamar, is available now. Robin Thicke has established himself as one of the most

respected singer-songwriters in soul and R&B music today. The musician, composer, and actor, released his critically acclaimed debut album, A Beautiful World, in 2003 under the name “Thicke.” Soon after, he came out with his breakthrough second release, 2006’s The Evolution Of Robin Thicke. Now on the way to double platinum status, Evolution’s mega hit “Lost Without U” became the #1 most played song in Urban Adult Contemporary BDS and topped four Billboard charts simultaneously. The awardwinning multiplatinum superstar returned to center stage in 2008 with Something Else, a joyful and modern tribute to the ‘70s soul and pop records that have inspired an extraordinary career. Revered by critics as one of the best soul albums in years, this ‘70s-inspired album dealt with racism, poverty, and love in the hits “Dreamworld,” “Magic,” and “The Sweetest Love.” In December of 2009 Robin released Sex Therapy. The title song was hailed by critics as “the sexiest song of the year.”

Music Tuning in Il-Divo to perform at Peabody Opera House

success of a 10-year career together.

Following a successful week of concerts at New York’s Marquis Theater, Il Divo—the record-breaking classical crossover group that has sold more than 26 million albums worldwide—will bring IL DIVO - A MUSICAL AFFAIR: THE GREATEST SONGS OF BROADWAY LIVE to theaters across the U.S. and Canada. The Live Nation-promoted engagement, which begins on March 28 and concludes on June 7, supports the group’s sixth studio album A Musical Affair. It’s their first compilation of songs inspired by Broadway shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Carousel and West Side Story, and features stellar duet partners Barbra Streisand, Kristin Chenoweth, Nicole Scherzinger, Heather Headley and Michael Ball. Ticket sales began on Nov. 15. The tour will stop in St. Louis on April 22 at the Peabody Opera House. The limited engagement of live concerts in NYC marked the first time the four members sang together on the Broadway stage. The show intertwines the most famous songs from Broadway musicals with the individual theatrical experiences of Carlos, David, Urs and Sébastien. Tony Award- and Grammy Award®-winner Heather Headley was a featured guest for the entire run. The quartet members are no strangers to musical theatre; Carlos was cast as Marius in Les Misérables when the show first premiered in Spain in 1993, while David played Rodolfo in Broadway’s La bohème in 2003, which subsequently garnered seven Tony Award nominations. The show was developed by long-term IL DIVO collaborator and artistic director Brian Burke (La Reve and Celine Dion’s residency shows in Las Vegas, Elton John, Rod Stewart and The Killers). The album “A Musical Affair” showcases Il Divo’s signature romantic and emotional interpretation of heartfelt classics like “Some Enchanted Evening” (South Pacific), “Bring Him Home” (Les Miserables), “Tonight” (West Side Story) and more. Il Divo has also provided new arrangements for these much-loved songs, as well as invited familiar Broadway and pop artists to appear on certain tracks as their duet partners. These top musicians lend their talent in songs like “The Music of the Night” (Phantom of the Opera) – LIVE duet with Barbra Streisand; “All I Ask Of You” (Phantom Of The Opera) – duet with Kristin Chenoweth; “Memory” (Cats) – duet with Nicole Scherzinger; and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” (The Lion King) – duet with Heather Headley. “It has been so inspiring to work with such legendary songs from the world of Broadway musicals for our new album,” says Urs Buhler from IL DIVO. “We can't wait to now perform them in our own style to our fans around the world.” Il Divo is the world's first and most successful classical crossover group. The foursome have sold over 26 million albums worldwide, achieved over 50 number one records, received 160 gold and platinum sales awards in over 33 countries and staged four groundbreaking world tours. The international quartet comprises of tenor Urs Buhler of Switzerland, baritone Carlos Marin of Spain, pop artist Sébastien Izambard of France and tenor David Miller from the United States. As Il Divo first came to fruition in 2003, this year’s album and complementary concert series marks a milestone for the four singers as they commemorate the

of her well-received appearance on the show (re-airing November 9) as both host and musical performer on October 5 that was part of a series of headline-making appearances that supported the release of her new album, Bangerz, on RCA Records. Bangerz debuted at #1 on both the Billboard Top 200 Album chart and the Digital Album Charts with over 270,000 albums sold. Additionally, during release week, Bangerz hit #1 on iTunes in over 70 countries. Both singles, “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop”, off Bangerz have already sold 4.3 million copies in the U.S. alone. “Wrecking Ball” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks. It became Miley’s first Billboard Hot 100 #1 and her fastest-flying top 10 on Radio Songs. “Wrecking Ball” also hit #1 on Spotify where it reached the highest streams ever for any track in the U.S. beating the next highest week by nearly 500,000 plays. This exciting news came just two days after her music video for "Wrecking Ball" became the fastest music video ever to reach CERTIFIED status, VEVO's milestone for videos delivering 100 million views in only 6 days. Cyrus shattered the previous record which she held for “We Can’t Stop,” which was CERTIFIED by VEVO just 37 days after it premiered. Bangerz has been getting rave reviews including Entertainment Weekly calling it “...utterly fresh, a pop blitz from a hip-hop blueprint, and proof that Miley won't settle for just shocking us.” US Weekly declared it “the year's most titillating pop explosion” awarding the album “4 stars (out of 4).”

Rabbi whose friend became pope

NEW Y O R K ( A P ) — I t w a s September, not an easy time for a religious Jew to be traveling. T h e J e w i s h m o n t h o f Ti s h re i was ending with its marathon of holy days. Kosher wine would be needed. There were Sabbath blessings to recite. Fortunately, Rabbi Abraham Skorka had a friend with the run of a hotel who arranged for kosher meals and said "amen" to the rabbi's prayers. Skorka has been talking about this trip ever since, in interviews and meetings with Jewish groups, for two reasons: The hotel was inside the Vatican, and the friend was Pope Francis. "He invited me to share his table for the three daily meals. He told me, 'You have to sit here' — to sit on his right," Skorka said in a recent interview in New York. "I said, 'Look, I have to say Kiddush.' I had to say the special blessing for the holiday, for Shabbat, before the meal is served. He told me, 'Do what you have to do.'" Skorka — rector of the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires, which has ties to the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York — finds himself in the unlikely position of being close friends with a pope. When Francis was Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, he and Skorka co-wrote a book of dialogues on Judaism and Roman Catholicism titled, "On Heaven and Earth," had a similarly themed TV show called "Bible, A Dialogue for Today," and offered prayers from each other's pulpits. Bergoglio kept a framed photo of the two of them in his study.

At Skorka's synagogue, the rabbi displayed a greeting the cardinal made to the congregation on one of his Rosh Hashana visits. "There is overall a very deep respect for the other," Skorka said. "His commitment with the Jewish people is total." Each of the men feels a duty to reach out beyond their own communities. Bergoglio, 76, grew up with Jewish friends. Jews fled to Argentina in significant numbers into the early 20th century to escape persecution in Russia, Germany and the Mideast. Skorka said Bergoglio was unwavering in combatting anti-Semitism, calling it a violation of Christian teaching. One of the events t h e c a rd i n a l c o n s i d e re d m o s t important on his annual calendar was a service at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires that promoted religious harmony on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Nazi-led mob violence in 1938 considered the start of the Holocaust. Skorka said the pope is so comfortable with Jewish culture that as he vetted meals at the Vatican hotel to make sure the rabbi was given only kosher food, Francis joked he was the rabbi's personal "mashgiach," the Hebrew word for a supervisor in a restaurant or other business who oversees compliance with Jewish dietary laws. As a child, Skorka said his father talked about how Jews had been persecuted over the centuries, including at times by the Catholic C h u rc h , b u t a l s o e m p h a s i z e d

the links between Judaism and Christianity. "'You must know that Jesus was a Jew,'" Skorka said his father told him. Skorka later looked to Abraham Joshua Heschel as a hero. Heschel, one of the most important 20th century Jewish thinkers, was a pioneer in Jewish-Christian cooperation. He negotiated with cardinals and Pope Paul VI over "Nostra Aetate," the transformative Second Vatican Council statement o f t h e 1 9 6 0 s t h a t re p u d i a t e d centuries of Christian teaching that Jews bore collective guilt for Christ's death. When Skorka, now 63, began serving as a rabbi in the Conservative Jewish movement, a priest invited him to a ChristianJewish dialogue, and his own interfaith work began in earnest. Skorka doesn't remember exactly how his conversations with Bergoglio began, but the two had come to know each other through the city's religious

events. Skorka wrote articles on interfaith issues for a newspaper the cardinal read. In person, they would needle each other about whose soccer team was winning. But more than that, Skorka said they were united in trying to reach people who had fallen away from their own religions and instead worshipped what the rabbi calls the "idols" of money, power and sex. Growing secularism has hit both the Catholic church and Jewish communities in Latin America. The church has also lost many parishioners to popular Pentecostal movements. "When he speaks about evangelization, the idea is to evangelize Christians or Catholics," to reach "higher dimensions of faith" and a deepened commitment to social justice, Skorka said. "This is the idea of evangelization that Bergoglio is stressing — not to evangelize Jews. This he told me,

on several opportunities." L a s t F e b r u a r y, w h e n P o p e Benedict XVI shocked the world by resigning, Skorka said he told his wife, "Jorge Mario will be pope." Skorka had read accounts of the 2005 conclave that elected Benedict reporting that Bergoglio had been a close runner-up. "When I saw him entering the balcony, with his white dress ... the emotion was very great," Skorka said. The rabbi wondered what would become of their friendship. Days passed without any word from Francis, although the pope had already started making the informal telephone calls from the Vatican that drew so much attention.

"How I Live Now"

Ever since she burst onto the scene in “Atonement,” playing a girl with an overly fertile imagination in a performance that earned her an Oscar nod at age 13, Saoirse Ronan has been one of the most interesting young faces on the big screen. Her precocious, quirky and intelligent look, almost like a pre-teen Meryl Streep, has evolved now into a more mature beauty, and the actress, now 19, remains just as interesting to watch, if not more so. Her latest film, the post-apocalyptic “How I Live Now,” based on the 2004 young adult novel by Meg Rosoff, feels something like “The Hunger Games” sprinkled with a liberal dose of “Pretty in Pink” or any basic teen comingof-age story. Like in “Atonement,” the personal journey unfolds in the shadow of world war — only here, it’s not World War II. No, it’s World War III, which begins almost immediately after Daisy, a self-absorbed young American with bleachedblond hair, fashionably ripped black tights and plenty of eye makeup, arrives in Britain, sent by her father to spend the summer with distant cousins in the country. She’s not thrilled. When friendly cousin Isaac (a sweet Tom Holland) fetches her at the airport, the first thing she does is mock his accent. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “violence, disturbing images, language and some sexuality.” RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"The Book Thief"

Rarely has a story about an angelic schoolgirl been narrated by Death. But such is the case in the dark, yet wondrous Nazi Germany-set “The Book Thief.” “Here’s a small fact: You are going to die,” we’re told via voiceover by the Grim Reaper as we meet our young heroine, Liesel Meminger, played exquisitely by 13-year-old French-Canadian newcomer Sophie Nelisse. Traveling by train in 1939, Liesel and her ailing younger brother are being taken to a small German town by their poor mother. Once there, they’ll be handed over to their new foster parents. But as a line of blood drips from her motionless sibling’s nose, Liesel’s large blue eyes widen in horror as she discovers her brother has died. Now, she must embrace her new life alone. At her brother ’s funeral, a gravedigger misplaces his “Gravedigger’s Handbook” and Liesel grabs it and tucks it under her coat. This becomes her connection to the past — she cradles the book when she sleeps and keeps a photo of her brother tucked between the pages. Based on Markus Zusak’s 2006 best-selling young-adult novel, “The Book Thief” is a bittersweet wartime drama about an uneducated little girl who grows into a polished author. Directed by Brian Percival (“Downton Abbey”), the film shines a bright light on Nelisse, a fresh young talent whose expressive eyes say everything. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some violence and intense depiction of thematic material.” RUNNING TIME: 131 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Charlie Countryman"

Commercials director Fredrik Bond makes a promising feature debut with “Charlie Countryman” a fanciful crime-drama / romance that gratifyingly eschews strict genre classification. Introduced in voiceover by an unseen Narrator (John Hurt), Charlie Countryman (Shia LaBeouf) is a bit of a lost soul and the

death of his mother Katie (Melissa Leo) leaves him completely adrift. After she passes, he sees her in a vision and asks her for guidance — she tells him to go visit Bucharest. Lacking any other direction in his life, Charlie boards a Chicago flight headed for Romania and meets Victor (Ion Caramitru), a Romanian taxi driver on his way home to visit his daughter. Casual conversation reveals a shared love for the hapless Chicago Cubs baseball team, but their newfound friendship is cut short when Victor peacefully passes away on the flight and Charlie experiences another vision: Victor telling him to deliver a gift that he was carrying to his daughter Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood). Charlie agrees, tracking her down at the airport when he arrives and consoling her as best he can before offering to assist with the disposition of her father’s body. Later at the opera house where he watches her play cello in the orchestra, Charlie meets Gabi’s menacing ex-husband Nigel (Mads Mikkelsen), who has unfinished business with Victor over a missing videocassette that he now plans to settle with Gabi, but she turns him away. Later that night on a circuitous wander around the city, Charlie’s convinced he’s falling in love with Gabi, but she remains aloof and mysterious about her relationship with Nigel. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some brutal violence, language throughout, sexuality/ nudity, and drug use.” RUNNING TIME: Running time: 103 minutes.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

A considerable upgrade over the first “Hunger Games” movie, “Catching Fire” comes across more like a remake than a sequel. In the adaptation of the second installation in Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy, there’s certainly plenty that has changed. Rebellion against the totalitarian rule of President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the 12 districts of Panem is growing. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is now a beloved hero with the weight of celebrity on her shoulders. And Philip Seymour Hoffman, bless him, has found his way into the proceedings. Yet the general plot — a journey from Katniss’ poor hometown of District 12 to a climactic game of human hunting in “the arena,” with high-speed train rides and training sessions in between — is identical to the first “Hunger Games.” More has shuffled behind the camera, and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is much the better for it. Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”) has taken over directing from Gary Ross, whose poor handling of the first film didn’t stop it from becoming a sensation. Lawrence has given the film (the budget was nearly doubled) a more settled environment heavy on greys and a more appropriately grave emotional atmosphere. These are kids being forced to kill other kids, the franchise seems to have realized. “Catching Fire” opens with Katniss back in District 12, haunted by the experiences of her first Hunger Games. There, too, is her flame Gale (Liam Hemsworth), who’s slaving away in the mines. (Hemsworth, a nonentity in both films, makes about as convincing a miner as Ben Stiller’s Zoolander did.) But Katniss’ success in the Hunger Games was partly due to her for-publicity-sake romance with her co-winner Peeta (Josh Hutcherson, who seems about half the height of the screendominating Lawrence). President Snow, aware of the put-on, insists they keep up the charade to help pacify the uprising. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language. RUNNING TIME: 146 minutes.

“Philomena”

Ask any good chef: why do some recipes work, while others, with the very same ingredients, do not? Ah, but it’s the QUALITY of the ingredients that matters, that chef will probably say. And so it is with Stephen Frears’ “Philomena,” a film whose cinematic recipe seems tricky at best: Take a shocking and tragic tale — a true one, involving the Catholic Church, no less — and make it into a film that’s part serious drama, part jaunty road-buddy movie, and part comedy. Such an unwieldy mix flirts with danger, even tastelessness, but “Philomena” works, thanks to the quality of its ingredients — especially the sensitive and nuanced performances by the ever-superb Judi Dench and by Steve Coogan, who also cowrote the script. Director Frears, carefully calibrating the tone here, is in fine form as he tackles a story based on the 2009 investigative book “The Lost Son of Philomena Lee,” by Martin Sixsmith. Lee, still living today, is an Irish woman who, as a teenager, became pregnant during a fairground tryst, not even understanding the biology of such things. Rejected at home, she was sent to a convent where she endured a painful birth — and told the pain was penance for her sin — then forced to work in the laundry with other “fallen women” for years in virtual imprisonment, allowed to see her son for one hour a day. Worse yet, the convent sold babies to wealthy Americans, and Philomena’s son, Anthony, was carried off one day as a toddler, without so much as a goodbye to his mother. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some strong language, thematic elements and sexual references.” RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

"Frozen"

Instead of the bygone damsels in distress — yes we’re talking about you Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty — the female royals of “Frozen,” Disney’s latest animated wonder, are feisty, forward and independent. Strong female leads are fitting, as “Frozen” marks the first time a female has occupied the director’s chair in the 76 years of Disney animation features. Jennifer Lee, who wrote Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” as well as the screenplay for “Frozen,” codirected the icy 3-D adventure with Disney veteran Chris Buck (“Tarzan”). Inspired by the 19th century fairytale, “The Snow Queen,” by Hans Christian Andersen, “Frozen” marks another Disney film modernizing one of the Danish author’s stories. “The Little Mermaid” also adapted an Andersen fable. Eight new songs, by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, work well when paired with the stunning visuals. But none really shine with classic tour de force like a “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” — and it’s been too long since we’ve had a big Disney-stimulated hit. But the overall message more than makes up for the film’s pitfalls. Rich in magic, perils and family ties, “Frozen” encourages us to embrace our fears, overthrow our inhibitions and find the true meaning of love. Set in the kingdom of Arendelle, sisters Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) are best friends who love to play in the snow. Luckily big sis Elsa can create ice and snow with her bare hands. RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for some action and mild rude humor. RUNNING TIME: ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Associated Press

In this 1946 file photo originally provided by RKO Pictures Inc., legendary actor James Stewart as George Bailey, center, is reunited with his wife played by actress Donna Reed, third from left, and family during the last scene of Frank Capra's "It's A Wonderful Life."

No sequel for "It's a Wonderful Life" By DERRIK LANG Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans outraged that a sequel to a beloved holiday film is in the works are no longer out in the cold. A spokeswoman for Paramount Pictures, which owns the rights to “It’s a Wonderful Life,” said Wednesday that the studio would fight a group of producers who are working on a follow-up to the 1946 holiday classic. Directed by Frank Capra, the film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a desperate family man who imagines during Christmastime what his town would be like if he’d never been born. “No project relating to ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ can proceed without a license from Paramount,” the studio noted in a statement after Star Partners and Hummingbird Productions announced their sequel plans

Monday. “To date, these individuals have not obtained any of the necessary rights, and we would take all appropriate steps to protect those rights.” The Internet collectively groaned this week when Bob Farnsworth, president of Nashville, Tenn.-based Hummingbird Productions, and Allen J. Schwalb, president of Orlando, Fla.based Star Partners, unveiled their pitch for “It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story,” a follow-up that would focus on Bailey’s unlikeable grandson. “This can’t be real,” many tweeted. “Maybe George Bailey should have killed himself after all,” wrote one blogger. Soon celebrities were chiming in: “I don’t know if they have a title yet, but if not, I have a suggestion. I would call it ‘It’s a Terrible Idea,”’ joked Jimmy Kimmel. “Stop messing with classics, people! What’s next? ‘Gone with the Wind 2’?” pondered

Andy Cohen. Farnsworth and Schwalb said the film would star Karolyn Grimes, who played Bailey’s daughter in the original film, as an angel who comes to the aid of her nephew. They also said they were in talks with other surviving cast members to return. The producers estimated it would cost between $25 and $32 million, far less than many Hollywood remakes and sequels. Apparently, Farnsworth and Schwalb, who did not return messages seeking comment for this story, forgot one important detail: They didn’t ask the film’s owner for legal permission. Farnsworth previously told The Hollywood Reporter trade publication that the rights to “It’s a Wonderful Life” were in the public domain. Not quite. While a lapsed copyright led TV stations in the 1970s through early 1990s to repeatedly

broadcast the film, Paramount has controlled the rights for the past 14 years, after it acquired Republic Pictures as part of its purchase of Spelling Entertainment in 1999. Paramount has since licensed the film to NBC, which airs it sparingly during the holidays. Farnsworth and Schwalb not only lacked the blessing of Paramount — and fans everywhere — their proposed idea for a sequel also isn’t supported by the family of Frank Capra, who died in 1991. Capra’s son, Tom Capra, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the family hadn’t been contacted by Farnsworth and Schwalb about the sequel, a project they believe their father would have never approved. “If he was still alive, he would have called it ludicrous,” said Capra. “Then, I think we would have called his lawyer. Why would you even attempt to make a sequel to such a classic film?”

"Homefront" solid but complicated By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge "Homefront" is that little movie that you saw the ad for an thought, "Ooh, another Jason Statham shoot-'em-up! I ' l l g o s e e t h a t w h e n I ' m o ff work at Thanksgiving." And you should. It was a perfectly respectable, well-executed thriller that delivered on its promises of meth production, home invasion, kidnapping, horseback riding, and sticking a tough guy with a British accent smack in the middle of the Louisiana swamps. I didn't have a bad time watching this movie, but it sure did cram a complicated plot into its average running time. T h a t ' s o n e w a y t o p e rc e i v e value, I suppose, which is great because I lucked into an early screening of this movie in order

t o re v i e w i t o n o p e n i n g d a y instead of writing about last weekend's ginormous titan, the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) doesn't need my help getting people in the door. After the tragic ending to his undercover work infiltrating a motorcycle club selling drugs, DEA Agent Phil Broker (Statham) decides that it's time to get out of town and cool off. He relocates to the bayou with is daughter, Maddy (Izabela Vidovic), where they attempt to build a new life after losing his career and her mother. Maddy's a tough and sensitive kid. Our first encounter with her is after a playground kerfuffle when she bashes in the nose of a school bully (Austin Craig), setting up a meet cute with her dad and the school's

psychologist (Rachelle Lefevre). As an aside, what small town grade school has a psychologist on retainer? They don't even h a v e a h o s p i t a l . B u t B ro k e r doesn't have time for love. He's too busy trying to make amends with the boy's crazy family (Kate Bosworth, Marcus Hester) before crank-addled Mom erupts over the bloody public embarrassment. When she enlists the help of her brother, Gator (James Franco), things go from bad to worse for Broker. Gator is a vicious local thug that has the town sheriff (Clancy Brown) in his pocket as he builds his own methamphetamine empire on the waterfront. While terrorizing the Brokers' plantation home, he uncovers the secret that Phil isn't exactly sharing: he's a cop hiding out

in a burg full of criminals. He even calls in a few tips after his friend (Omar Benson Miller) cues him into some of the more t h re a t e n i n g g o i n g s - o n . G a t o r u s e s h i s g i r l f r i e n d ( Wi n o n a Ry d e r ) a s a p a w n i n o ff e r i n g Broker's whereabouts to the motorcycle gang's leader (Chuck Zito) as revenge for the death of his jerk son (Linds Edwards). In exchange, Gator hopes to get statewide distribution for his homemade crystal meth. The toker is too hooked on his own product, though, to figure any type of double-cross. And there is no honor among any of these thieves. The climactic nighttime battle at Casa de Broker is full of punching, machine gun fire, and a high-speed boat chase getaway. It's almost like this film was dreamed up by an

December 5, 2013

amped-up teenage boy in 1988. See what I mean about complicated? The films is dense and I haven't even mentioned Broker's old DEA boss (Lance E. Nichols), the lead thug that goes after broker (Frank Grillo), or a slimy lawyer (Pruitt Taylor Vince). Chuck Logan's source novel is adapted by, wait for it, Sylvester Stallone, Statham's frequent co-star and American mentor. The two have teamed up for a couple of Expendables movie and a third is on the way for next year. I think by now we know pretty well what we can expect from their team-up. "Homefront" runs 111 minutes and is rated R for strong violence, pervasive language, drug content, and brief sexuality. I give this film two stars out of four.

The Arts For The Edge

T

he Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) presents the famous and fun whodunit play "The Mousetrap" by Agatha Christie and directed by Paul Mason Barnes. There will be no performances on Tuesday, December 24 or Wednesday, December 25. Ticket prices start at just $16.50 (previews) and $20 (regular performances). To purchase, visit The Rep Box Office, located inside the Loretto-Hilton Center, charge by phone by calling (314) 968-4925, or visit The Rep’s Online Box Office at http://www. repstl.org. Major sponsorship for this production is provided by Wells Fargo Advisors. The Grande Dame of suspense weaves a clever mystery that will keep you guessing till the very end. It’s late afternoon at Monkswell Manor, and a strong snowstorm is in full swing. A voice the radio is heard describing the recent murder of a Mrs. Maureen Lyon in London. The police are looking to interview a man seen near the crime scene. Mollie and Giles Ralston, the owners of the Manor, each enter from a day of separate errands, preparing for their soon-to-be arriving guests, who will be the first to stay at the recently converted boarding house. Mollie and Giles discuss their nerves about their new business. Giles worries about the fact they’re allowing strangers, whom they know very little about, to stay at their home, but Mollie assures him that they all wrote “from very good addresses.” One by one, the expected guests arrive. There’s Christopher Wren, an architect who is a bit neurotic and childlike in nature, but friendly; Mrs. Boyle, an older snobbish woman who is very disappointed in the Manor’s amenities and Mollie’s amateur hosting skills; Major Metcalf, a middle-aged former military man whose demeanor is still very much that of a soldier; and Miss Casewell, a sharp-witted young woman who is rather masculine in nature. Mollie and Giles receive an unexpected guest arrival in Mr. Paravicini who says his car ran into a snow bank. Flamboyant and chatty, he tells Mollie and Giles he feels lucky to have broken down near a guesthouse. Giles and Mollie tell him he’s welcome to a small room they have left, and the three chat about how they’re likely snowed in for the time being. The Ralstons receive another unexpected arrival in Detective Sergeant Trotter, who tells everyone he has reason to believe the murderer of Maureen Lyon is headed to the Manor – and might have already arrived. Trotter says police believe the Lyon murder was an act of revenge for a crime that was committed years ago and that someone staying at the Manor is also connected to the crime and may be the murderer’s intended next victim. With everyone snowed in from the storm, they realize the murderer is likely among them. Everyone denies any connection with the crime, so Trotter can’t get any answers. However, the tense environment slowly causes people to unravel and disturbing truths are revealed. But one truth that continues to elude everyone is the identity of the murderer. In a situation where nothing is as it seems, how do those at Monkswell Manor know who to trust? And if and when they finally figure

it out, will it be too late?"Agatha Christie brings her special cleverness to our stage with her historic play 'The Mousetrap,'" said Steve Woolf, artistic director of The Rep. "Still running after 61 years in London, this mystery continues to have the audience guessing as to whodunit. A great collection of characters all appear to be the culprit in a criminal activity that takes place during a fierce snowstorm at Monkswell Manor. It simply is great fun for the holidays." A literary giant, Ms. Christie’s books have sold more than two billion copies in over 45 languages, a feat that is only outdone by the works of William Shakespeare and the Bible. In her illustrious 50-year writing career, she penned 66 detective novels, 14 short-story collections, six romance novels and a dozen plays. "The Mousetrap", which opened in London in 1952, holds the title of being the longest continuously running play in theatrical history. Known worldwide as the “Queen of Crime,” Dame Agatha Christie is probably the most successful and famous mystery writer of all time. Although she passed away almost 30 years ago, her work has remained immensely popular. Her books, short stories and plays have sold over two billion copies in over 45 languages – in fact, she is only outsold by the Bible and William Shakespeare. During her more than 50-year writing career, Christie wrote a total of 80 novels and short story collections, some of her most famous works being Murder on the Orient Express (1934), Death on the Nile (1937), and And Then There Were None (1939). She wrote more than a dozen plays, including The Mousetrap, which opened in London in 1952 and holds the title of being the longest continuously running play in

theatrical history. Creating the standard for mysteries, Christie made popular many of the most used literary devices today in the genre, including red herrings, twist endings, and making the least likely suspect the guilty party. And although most of her stories take place the better half of a century ago, Agatha Christie is still a household name today synonymous with intrigue and mystery. Christie was a savant at suspense and a talented thrill-inducer. She understood the human psyche in that even though it’s intuitive to avoid things that would scare us, many of us crave the adrenaline rush we get from fear so long as it’s from a source of entertainment (i.e. reading a book or watching a play), and there’s no actual risk of being hurt. She knew what maked the reader or audience member tick. It also appears that when someone is credited with defining a genre, that credit doesn’t always fade with time. “Readers still like the world she created, one with recognizable characters in a recognizable setting, one that is momentarily invaded by murder but has order restored by the intervention of The Great Detective,” said John Curran, a Christie historian who has written two books on the author, Secret Notebooks and Agatha Christie: Murder in the Making, in a 2011 USA Today interview. Barry Forshaw, editor of British Crime Writing: An Encyclopedia, felt similarly and in a 2009 interview with The Independent, he discussed Christie’s ability to create a strong sense of nostalgia – even for those who never lived in the settings or during the time of when her stories take place. “She writes about an England that people nurture in their minds even if it never really existed,

and that is something that appeals to both British readers and worldwide fans.” That isn’t to say Christie didn’t have her critics. She’s been criticized for having one-dimensional characters and stories that lacked substance. However, Christie considered herself more an entertainer than a literary groundbreaker. In fact, Forshaw actually sees Christie’s straightforward writing as much of the reason for her lasting popularity. Her simple language, methodical plots and colorful descriptions of a bygone era give her stories a universal appeal. The cast of "The Mousetrap" at The Rep is Ellen Adair as Mollie, William Connell as Giles, Tarah Flanagan (The Comedy of Errors) as Miss Casewell, Darrie Lawrence (Over the Tavern) as Mrs. Boyle, Sean Mellott as Christopher Wren, Larry Paulsen as Mr. Paravicini, Christian Pedersen as Detective Sergeant Trotter and Michael James Reed (Clybourne Park) as Major Metcalf. Paul Mason Barnes, who last directed Shakespeare’s farcical romp The Comedy of Errors on the Mainstage, directs The Rep’s production of "The Mousetrap". The creative staff also includes John Ezell, set designer; Dorothy Marshall Englis, costume designer; Peter E. Sargent, lighting designer; Rusty Wandall, sound designer; Rich Cole, casting director; Glenn Dunn, stage manager; and Shannon B. Sturgis, assistant stage manager. For more information about The Rep’s production of "The Mousetrap" including a guide introducing the characters, plot and background on the play; photos related to the production; and more, visit The Rep’s comprehensive public website at http:// www.repstl.org.

Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker returns to the Peabody Opera House on Sunday, Dec. 8 for a 5pm performance. The holiday favorite dramatizes the traditional story of Masha meeting her “Prince.” This year, exclusive to Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, a tribute to world peace will be added. The “Dove of Peace,” will feature two dancers who become one bird with a 20 foot wingspan and escort Masha and Prince to the “Land of Peace and Harmony.” Tickets are $90, $60, $45 & $35. Tickets may be purchased at the Ford Box Office at Scottrade Center, all Ticketmaster Ticket Centers, by phone at 800-745-3000, or online at ticketmaster.com. For more information go to http:// www.nutcracker.com/yourcity/stlouis-mo Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker tells the beloved Christmas story of the girl who falls in love with a Nutcracker Prince –

with Russian flair. Praised by the NY Times as “thrilling and expansive,” the 40 impeccably trained Russian dancers leap, spin and lunge bringing the traditional story to life. The Act I Christmas party enchants with its magical toys, evil Mouse King and a journey through the glittering Snow Forrest. Unique to the Great Russian Nutcracker, Russian folk characters Father Christmas and the Snow Maiden escort Masha (aka Clara) to the Land of Peace and Harmony in Act II where she and the Nutcracker Prince are honored by emissaries from heritages the world over; African, Russian, Asian, European and Hispanic. Set to Pytor Tchaikovsky’s famous score, Moscow Ballet’s production features lavish costumes, nine hand-painted backdrops with 3-D ornamentation and fanciful, larger-than-life puppets designed by Russian puppet master Valentin Federov. A must see show for everyone in the family this holiday season! www.nutcracker.com Akiva Talmi Presents Inc. (ATP) is known for its annual, touring Great Russian Nutcracker and full-length productions of the classic story-ballets; Swan Lake, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and others by the Moscow Ballet.
