People Tommy’s tale goes beyond the trash can Children’s author to visit AfterWords Bookstore By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge

A

California women has made a local dog’s story into a new children’s book.

Laura Marlowe has written a book titled “Tommy the Throwaway Dog” (www. tommythethrowawaydog.com). The book is about the abused puppy, now named Tommy, rescued last year from the inside of a trash can in Cahokia. Tommy’s story began on Oct. 29, 2009, when an employee of Waste Management Systems was emptying a residential trash can in to his garbage truck in Cahokia and saw a lifeless puppy suddenly move. The employee immediately hit the emergency button to stop the compactor and called the police. Rather than taking him to St. Clair Animal Control where the puppy would have most likely would have been put to sleep, because he was injured, the authorities called Hope Animal Rescues – an animal rescue organization based in the Edwardsville/Alton area. Hope Animal Rescues said Officer Derek Ruberstell was responsible for that call that day that ultimately saved Tommy’s life. Hope Animal Rescues took Tommy to the Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital for medical attention. Organization cofounder Jackie Spiker said Tommy was starved, beaten and had a cord that had grown into his neck tearing at his flesh causing his face to swell and leaving him unable to eat. She said he received medical attention and surgery for the wounds around his neck The story of the rescue hit the news across the St. Louis area and then nationally. Marlowe said she heard about the story “by accident” as she was viewing online headlines, just as she does every day. “The headline had to do with abuse of a dog,” Marlowe said. “As it concerned animal welfare, I decided to read the accompanying article, though I did hesitate at first as I knew it would sadden me. And I could not ignore it. Not only did the article sadden me, it horrified and sickened me. I cried.” Marlowe added, “A few moments later I went to the Web site of the shelter mentioned

December 9, 2010

in the article that was taking care of the dog at the time. I read further about the case, saw some incredibly graphic photos, and then was led to a video news story that provided even more insight. Straight away I made a donation toward the dog’s care. As of that moment I could not stop thinking about the dog and what he had been through, as well as the kind people who along the way gave him a second chance.” Marlowe, an animal lover and writer, said she wanted to do something more to help. “I felt deep empathy for this dog, not only due to the unspeakable abuse imposed upon him and the suffering it created, but also the fact that he was then literally thrown away, into the garbage, thought of as garbage, while he was near death. It broke my heart and pained me perhaps more than I can explain in words,” Marlowe said. “Shortly after I had read the article and the information on the shelter Web site, I thought ‘what can I do to help further create awareness of – and funds for – animal welfare causes and the work such organizations do, while at the same time educate people – children, especially – about the

value of kindness and that our animal friends deserve respect?’ Then a light went on. And the children’s version of Tommy’s story was born.” Marlowe said putting her two loves together was nothing new for her – writing and animals. She said for the last few years she has been writing children’s stories that include or revolve around animal welfare themes. “I am naturally drawn, you could say, toward the creation of such stories, perhaps due to the combination of my passion for writing, love of dogs and involvement in animal welfare, and my inner child that relates to canines, as they are like twoyear-old children all their lives. I write a lot of poetry as well, again something I am naturally drawn to and thoroughly enjoy.” Spiker said Hope Animal Rescues did not know about the book until it was completed. “We had no idea until I got en e-mail with a picture of the cover from the author,” Spiker said. Spiker said the organization is thrilled about the new book and hopeful that it will help other animals in the future. “There are many more Tommies out there that are suffering, many do not get the

help they need like Tommy did, and we should all think of them, and do our best to be kind to all animals.” Spiker said Tommy has healed

Marlowe will be meeting Tommy for the first time on Dec. 11 at a book signing she is doing at AfterWords Bookstore, located at 231 North Main in Edwardsville. The public is invited to come out and meet Tommy and Marlowe from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and get an autographed book by both of them. The autograph is free from the author. The pawtograph is available for a donation of $4 to Hope Animal Rescues. Also, proceeds from the sale of the book ($12.99) are being donated to Hope Animal Rescues. In addition, Marlowe will be reading the book prior to the book signing at about 12:30 p.m. “I am looking forward to not only meeting and connecting with many fans and supporters of the book, but also to finally, after 14 months, meeting Tommy and his most wonderful new owner, who gave Tommy the best Christmas gift of all last December – a new and loving home.” Marlowe said she is also excited to meet many others that she has had contacted with while writing and promoting the book, and especially the co-founders of Hope Animal Rescues Spiker and Kim Lee. She has dedicated the book to Hope Animal Rescues, as well as Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital and the Cahokia Police Department. The book is available at AfterWords Bookstore in Edwardsville or online at either www.barnesandnoble.com or

Legal buddies and legal battles Carlson and Byron have seen the judicial system from every angle By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge

C

ombined they have a century of experience in the courtroom, some of it together, and now the retired judge and the semiretired attorney are together again in the same building. They are down the hall from each other, actually, at the newly-created law firm of Byron, Carlson, Petri and Kalb. In July, the firm moved into a new 8,000square-foot brick masonry building at 411 St. Louis Street in Edwardsville. Walk through the front door, take a left at the front desk, and you come to the office of Nicholas Byron, who retired as a circuit judge in Madison County on Dec. 1. From his window, Byron can see Cassens Insurance on the other side of St. Louis Street. Around the corner is the office of Jon Carlson, who began as a plaintiff’s attorney in 1967. Carlson, who can look out and see the Madison County Jail, has argued more than 200 cases in a 43-year-career. His son, Eric, has an office next door. Byron’s son, Chris, has one down the hall. Both Eric Carlson and Chris Byron are partners in the new firm, with Christopher Petri and Brian Kalb. Jon Carlson and Nick Byron will be available to advise the young attorneys, but they also want to embark on a second, somewhat slower, career as mediators. Asked how it feels to be an elder statesmen, Carlson said: “You know, it hasn’t quite sunk in. It’s really kind of fun being around all these young people. On the other hand, I can always go down the hall and close the door, and the judge and I can swap lies.” During separate interviews recently, the men retraced their paths from law school to the Madison County Courthouse, and, finally, to Byron, Carlson, Petri and Kalb. Nick Byron’s began after his graduation from law school, in 1958. He moved to St. Louis and began working for a corporate lawyer named Murray Stienberg, who represented “very wealthy” businessmen. From there, he moved to Belleville to work for attorney John Sprague, handling tort cases and general work. In 1968, after Roland Griffith was elected Madison County State’s Attorney, Byron was to work there on a part-time basis. “As a result of that, I gained a lot of trial experience,” Byron said. “I handled some of the big criminal cases and some big civil cases as well.” In 1972, Byron was elected Madison County State’s Attorney, with the endorsement of the Madison County Democratic Party. He served two terms. It took three or four years to really organize the office, he says. At a time when crime “was mushrooming,” Byron says he and

Local attorneys Nick Byron, left, and Jon Carlson are together again. his prosecutors were able to amass one of the best criminal conviction rates in the state. Many of the high-profile cases went to Bob Trone, a legendary figure in Madison County crime-fighting lore. “One thing about our office was, if we brought a case that was found to have no merit to it, we immediately dismissed it,” Byron says. “We were not persecutors, we wanted a reputation as good prosecutors. We had integrity with the defense bar.” In 1981, he was appointed an associate judge. Eight years later, he moved up to circuit judge. He served a total of 27 years as circuit judge, including a three-year stint in the 1990s as chief judge. Byron says the work-load was heavy, but he loved it. At one point, he was handling the asbestos and the class action dockets simultaneously. “I enjoyed doing cases, and trying them, and I think I can say, without any reservation, that I tried as many or more cases than any other judge in the state,” he said. After his retirement, Byron moved in to his son’s law offices on North Main Street, then known as Byron, Gerber, Petri and Kalb. When the firm moved to St. Louis Street – and Gerber left for Keller Construction Co. and Eric Carlson was added – Byron and Jon Carlson moved in as well. Recently, Nick Byron attended the University of Missouri and the National Judicial College and obtained his

certifications as a mediator. In many ways, he says, mediation is a fairer way to resolve legal disputes than having a case go to trial. “The judicial route results in one verdict, and it’s winner-takeall, so to speak,” he said. “With mediation, there are more elements that you can consider and resolve, and you try to ferret out a more just result.” Today, Nick Byron arrives at his office around 8:30 or 9 a.m., and leaves around 4. His hours, he says, “are almost my own.” How does he feel about being one of the “old guys” at the firm? “I love it,” he says. “There is some pressure, but not really.” Jon Carlson began arguing cases in Madison County in 1977, after a 10-yearstint in St. Clair County. He’s argued cases in places as distant as Texas and Colorado: railroad cases, trucking cases, and other tort cases. In his most famous case, in 1995, Jon and Eric Carlson were lead counsel in Best v Taylor Machine Works, Inc. as well as a companion case known as Isbell v Union Pacific Railroad Co. In the two cases, Jon Carlson successfully challenged the Illinois Tort Reform Act of 1995. “There were things in it like, if you filed a lawsuit you had to give your medical history, whether it was relevant or not, from the day you were born,” Carlson maintains. “It made it almost impossible for a plaintiff to win.” Jon Carlson argued the case in front of Judge David Herndon, now a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Illinois. He argued that it was unconstitutional, and

Herndon eventually agreed. As a result, in 1998 he was nominated as a finalist for Trial Lawyer of the Year, by the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. A couple of months ago, at the Madison County Courthouse, the Carlsons argued a case in front of Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian. They represented plaintiffs Misty and Guy Webb, whose truck was struck by a Union Pacific train at a private railroad crossing in Union County, Mo. Guy Webb’s brother, James, was killed, and Guy suffered permanent injuries that left him facing more than a half million dollars in medical bills. In the end, jurors awarded $2.5 million to Guy Webb, although that was reduced to $1.25 million because jurors ruled that he was 50 percent to blame for the accident. Alongside the Carlsons at the plaintiff’s bench was Nick Byron. “Having my son on one side and the judge on the other was really quite thrilling,” Carlson said. Carlson will continue taking cases as a plaintiff’s attorney but also wants to begin handling mediation cases, for which he was certified last year. When you compare mediation to the pressures of the courtroom, he says, mediation is actually fun. “Because of the amount of pressure you’re under in a trial,” Carlson says. “I don’t think people can understand unless they’re there. On the other hand, mediation is trying to help people out. There’s nothing adversarial about it. You can see, as a mediator, where the weaknesses are on both sides.”

Patriarch Bartholomew I — who is known as the “Green Patriarch” for his environmentally friendly attitudes — plans to turn the building into an institute for the environment after it is restored.

the deed to a historic building in a move hailed as a symbolic but important victory for the formerly dominant church in Turkey. The Turkish government on Monday returned control of the 19thcentury orphanage, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, to the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople after a ruling for the church in the European Court of Human Rights. The European Union has called for Turkey to return dozens of other properties seized from Jewish and Christian foundations decades ago. Several court cases are currently under way by minority religious groups against the Turkish state. The Patriarchate in Constantinople — the spiritual leader of Turkey’s Greek minority — dates from the Orthodox Greek Byzantine Empire,

The Arts Artistic adventures Contemporary announces fall exhibits The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis will present two exhibitions that will run through the fall: Richard Artschwager: “Hair” and Elad Lassry: “Sum of Limited Views” from Sept. 10 to Jan. 2, 2011. About the Exhibitions: Richard Artschwager: Hair The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is proud to present an exhibition of works by the widely acclaimed American artist Richard Artschwager, in the first focused look at the artist’s exploration of rubberized horsehair. A maverick who began his career as a cabinet-maker, Artschwager has influenced countless other artists with a wide-ranging body of work that includes sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs, installations, drawings, and furniture pieces that merge the machine-made with the hand-made. Over the past four decades, Artschwager ’s work has been variously described as Pop Art, because of its derivation from utilitarian objects and incorporation of commercial and industrial materials; as Minimal Art, because of its geometric forms and solid presence; and as Conceptual Art, because of its cool and cerebral detachment. But none of these classifications adequately define the aims of an artist who specializes in the relationship between perception and deception. Artschwager ’s exhibition at the Contemporary focuses on a material he has used throughout his career: rubberized horsehair. Emerging from the artist’s famous blps series he began in 1968, the hair works depart from the crisp lines and sharp

forms of his better-known Formica furniture works, and blur the clarity of sculptural form, throwing objecthood out of focus. As the artist puts it, “Hair is peculiar. It’s foreign to gravity yet at the same time it has stability. You can cut it and it has built-in contrary qualities, which are structure and chaos.” Used most commonly in upholstery, rubberized horsehair is usually hidden from view underneath the rounded edges of chairs and couches. In these works, Artschwager turns the objects inside out, exposing their innards and applying them to new surfaces. The artist has long been interested in what he calls object-pictures, collapsing the flatness of an image with the tactility of an object, or, in his own words, “sculpture for the eye and painting for the touch.” Installed in the Contemporary’s central main gallery, silhouettes of life-size human figures seem to dance and float weightlessly on the wall. Often beginning as small scribbles in the artist’s notebook, the organic forms are enlarged to life-size and made with actual horsehair, allowing their sketch-like quality to outlast their entrance into the world of objects. As illusions, the images confuse the real with the artificial, and while his figures dance, climb, dive, and rejoice as “living” characters, their materials prevent the image from staying within our reach. Also included in the exhibition are images that have made up Artschwager’s iconography for over forty years: hair-covered blps, exclamation marks, corners, and hair-covered furniture pieces each become sculptures that are slightly out of focus. In contrast to a contemporary art conversation w e i g h e d d o w n b y i r o n y, strategy, and cool self-reflexivity, Artschwager ’s new exhibition at the Contemporary foregrounds the

artist’s sincere celebration of the experiential knowledge of objects and pictures and his patient passion for locating the body and soul of an image. Richard Artschwager was born in 1923 in Washington D.C and currently lives and works in Hudson, NY. He first studied chemistry, biology, and mathematics at Cornell University. In the early 1950s, he became involved in cabinet-making, producing simple pieces of furniture. His work has been the subject of many important surveys, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; and Kunstmuseum Winterthur and is included in many museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Ludwig Cologne, and Fondation Cartier, Paris. Richard Artschwager: Hair is curated by Anthony Huberman and organized by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. Elad Lassry: Sum of Limited Views The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is pleased to present a new exhibition by Tel Aviv-born, Los Angeles-based artist Elad Lassry. Featuring recent and new works, this exhibition will be the artist’s first major museum monograph in the United States. Lassry’s intimately framed p h o t o g r a p h s s l i p e ff o r t l e s s l y between genres and iconographies, capturing plastic still-lives, uncanny publicity portraits, collages, animals, a n d l a n d s c a p e s . T h o ro u g h l y

familiar and blank at the same time, his images move beyond the simple category of “photography” and instead ask us to revisit the perceptual experience of a picture. Duplicating and then cloistering his subjects within saturated fields of color, excised from their original context, Lassry attends to the singularity of his subjects, while also immersing them in t heir own formal properties. While clearly depicting specific objects, people, animals, or places, the images are overwhelmed by their own colors, shapes, and p a t t e r n s , e ff e c t i v e l y m e rg i n g their representation with their abstraction. Lassry’s photographs often slide between stillness and movement— challenging the eye to register, in certain blinks, fleeting vibrations in the picture. Whether through layered exposures (reminiscent of early techniques in “ghost photography”) or the staccato rhythm of colors, and between field and ground, his still-lives and portraits possess a seductive, if slippery, hold on our vision. Ever suspicious of the status of photography, Lassry also paints his frames with richly saturated hues, camouflaging his images and flirting with the nature of the monochrome, and the photograph’s own status as an object. Sum of Limited Views spotlights the artist’s recent explorations, including several new works, with a focus on Lassry’s capacity to create the “unstill” picture. Also featured in the exhibition will be a survey of his 16mm films, which,

like his photographs, blur the experience of the still and moving image. Presented in a black-box gallery, reversing the conditions of the photographic experience, Lassry’s films flex the strain between realism, narrative, and abstraction. Combining over thirty photographs with his 16mm films, Sum of Limited Views presents an overview of an artist’s exploration in making pictures. Elad Lassry was born in 1977 in Tel Aviv, and he lives and works in Los Angeles. He has presented work throughout the U.S. and Europe, including a recent monographic survey at Kunsthalle Zürich and an exhibition of three films at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Other exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; N e w M u s e u m , N e w Yo r k ; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach; and Gallery 400, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago. Lassry presented his photographs in The Front Room at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in 2008. Elad Lassry: Sum of Limited Views is curated by Anthony Huberman and Laura Fried and organized by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis promotes meaningful engagement with the most relevant and innovative art being made today.

George Winston’s Arts & Issues concert sold out

“The Winter Concert”

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge

T

hose who bought their tickets early should prepare to be mesmerized when George Winston performs his sold out SIUE Arts & Issues show, "The Winter Concert," at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 in the SIUE Dunham Hall. Inspired by the seasons, Winston, a solo pianist, brings a variety of styles to his performance including his melodic folk, stride, New Orleans R&B and Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts pieces. Having travelled the U.S. and Asia for the past 30 years promoting his albums, which include 13 to date, Winston said he spends about 80 percent of a year on the road. He said he enjoys driving himself as he criss-crosses the country. On the phone as he headed down the northeastern coast from upstate New York to southern New Hampshire to his next concert destination, he explained what to expect from his Dec. 15 show. “I’ll be doing some New Orleans R&B type stuff and some Vince Guaraldi pieces and then some things from the 'Autumn' and 'December' records – the older seasonal records,” Winston said. “Kind of a mixture of things where I’m at musically right now.” Winston is best known for his seasonally-themed recordings “Autumn,” “December,” “Winter Into Spring,” and “Summer” as well as “Linus & Lucy-The Music of Vince Guaraldi” and “Night Divides the Day-The Music of the Doors.” His latest album released

George Winston will bring his seasonally-themed pieces to the SIUE Arts & Issues series on Dec. 15. in February of 2010, “Love Will Come-The Music of Vince Guaraldi Vol 2,” features compositions by the late jazz pianist, including pieces from the Peanuts TV specials. Since 1986, Winston has worked with a local food bank in every tour market to host a “Canned Food Drive” at the show. He asked that those attending his show consider bringing cans of food to the Dec. 15 show which will be donated to the Glen-Ed Food Pantry. He said he does the food drive as a way to interact with the community which has invited him to play as well as help those in need locally. “If you’re down on your luck, you can sleep in your car or even in your sleeping

bag and you can get water from a fountain, but where do you get food?” Winston said. “If you can get food, you can deal with everything else – kind of. These food banks are doing a fantastic job helping people and have for a long time. It’s just helping them do what they are doing.” Winston also donates 100 percent of his merchandise sales at the show to the food organizations. Helping others through his music is simply second nature to Winston. In 2001 he released “Remembrance-A Memorial Benefit,” a six song CD of piano, guitar and harmonica solos, to benefit those affected by 9/11. Then in 2006 he released “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions," a

Hurricane Katrina benefit record. He said his next record would be a benefit for the oil spill. Winston has performed over 4,000 shows, traveled to Asia over 20 times and said he performed in Edwardsville about three years ago. In addition to the stride piano, Winston also plays the harmonica and Hawaiian slack key guitar, the name for the beautiful solo finger-style guitar tradition, unique to Hawaii, which began in the early 1800s. Additional information about George Winston can be found online at www.georgewinston. com or watch a clip of his performance on his YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube. com/georgewinstonpiano Although the George Winston

concert is sold out, there are still other upcoming SIUE Arts & Issues programs. The Eisenhower Dance Ensemble comes to the A&I stage on Jan. 29 followed by Temple Grandin’s “Visual Thinking, Autism and Design” on Feb. 24. “Battlestar Galactica” and beyond For The Edge

A

long history of band names and a short list of previous members make it tough to nail down the exact start of the band Belleview. Though, at its core there have always been brothers Justin and Jamal McLaughlin. Add in their childhood friend, Josh, and their cousin, Chris, you have the group up until their last few albums. With the recent addition of Brennan, a former band mate of Chris, the band comes in focus. After a year in the studio, Belleview is pleased to announce their latest release, “Fountains;” nearly an hour-long, 13-track concept album. “Fountains” represents a sort of fresh start for the band as Jamal has made the switch from primarily playing guitars over to keyboards and Brennan has taken on the majority of guitar duties. Brennan was featured on a few tracks from their previous effort, “Any Day Now,” but this album represents his first full-time gig with Belleview. Chris Ash is also still making his presence felt even though he’s often been contributing remotely from university in Chicago. Josh has brought the

addition of Moog Taurus pedals, and Justin has incorporated more electronic drum sounds to his palette. Even with the slight lineup juggling and exploration of some new instrumentation, the real departure for Belleview was in writing and collaboration. The previous albums were done on a song-by-song basis. They would write and collaborate on a particular song through jamming. Once enough new songs piled up, they’d record them. Since all three of the albums in their current repertoire have been recorded and produced primarily by Jamal at Bare Foot Studios, they’ve had the luxury of setting their own timetables. Though they’re not backed by any label, they do feel that with each release the quality is getting better and better. The ability of unlimited studio time provided Belleview with an opportunity to explore something that, before now, had been pretty foreign to them; writing and recording a collection of songs with a predetermined script or meaning. In essence, they created a “concept album.” The idea of a concept album is nothing new of course, but, for Belleview, actually sitting down to write one was a challenge. The band had just released “Any Day Now” and had few new songs. The idea of creating a concept album actually started with Josh as sort of a joke. They knew it would have to be a fully collaborative effort where everyone understood the subject matter at hand. But what would be the subject matter? At the time, they were all watching the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series that had recently come to a close. The series really struck a chord with Josh and he was pushing it on the rest of the band. To his great surprise, the guys did not totally trash the idea so he quickly scribbled out a set of themes and their order. They wrote each song while trying to stick to the “script” as best they could. In addition to revamping the lyrics on a few of the songs Jamal had already written to better match the story, they set out to try and actually assign music to the specific themes. Jamal took the brunt of the work, but they each picked themes and kind of treated them as personal assignments. They were not so strict with the concepts that it stifled what they were trying to create, but ended up using quite a bit of creative freedom on many of the tracks. Initially, a song might be written for a certain theme only to be changed to better fit one of the others. When that happened they would just write additional songs to fill the gaps. Out of all of this back and forth came quite an array of songs along with transitions and shorts. Though the album was initially inspired and driven by themes from the Battlestar Galactica series, the finished work ended up being a lot more than that. What had

started out as a sort of joke ultimately became an album that focuses primarily on the human condition, the mundane cycles of everyday life being interrupted by something catastrophic, the ability to adapt, and the probability that eventually everything will come around full circle and happen again, and again. Hence the album title, “Fountains.” But you’ll have to listen for yourself. Added attention was given to the artwork for this album. Belleview worked with designer Jim Harper to create limited edition, hand-screened tin cases. And in place of a standard insert, they included a poster with photos and liner notes. The album is also available in digital format on iTunes, eMusic, Amazon and Napster. To get your hands on a physical copy come to Belleview’s next concert at Fubar in St. Louis on Dec. 10 with doors open at 5 p.m. In the meantime, visit their Web site and subscribe to their blog for future updates and Belleview news.

Music Tuning in Chamber Chorus plans Christmas Concert The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus continues its 55th season with its annual Christmas concert titled “Traditions: Christmas From Ancient to Modern.” The program compares ancient and modern arrangements of Latin, English and German carols and features two world premieres. “Traditions: Christmas From Ancient to Modern” will be presented at 3 p.m. on Dec. 19. In recognition of the concert’s venue, the Chamber Chorus will sing various arrangements of Martin Luther ’s poem “Vom Himmel Hoch,” originally written for his own children. Australian Clare Maclean, the Chorus’s composer-in-residence, offers a newly commissioned piece employing Luther ’s original German words, while Britain’s David Bednall sets the entire poem in English. A much earlier Scottish translation of Luther’s words will also be sung, with the audience having the opportunity to compare the 16th century version with one featuring rich harmonies added by Missouri-born composer, Virgil Thomson. The other world premiere on the program, Russian Yakov Gubanov’s “The Garden of Roses,” is part of an exploration of how the image of a rose has often been applied to Jesus. Fellow Russian Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, German Michael Praetorius and England’s Herbert Howells also contribute works to this musical examination. The program will be rounded out by other modern arrangements of ancient words by Vaughan Williams, William Walton and the Chamber Chorus’s music director, Philip Barnes. Join the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus as it explores ”Christmas From Ancient to Modern,” Sunday, December 19 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Parking is free. For more information about the concert, and tickets, call 636-458-4343 General admission tickets are $35 each. Student tickets are $10 each.

The Orchestra debuted in 1996 with the timeless “Christmas Eve and Other Stories.” Highlighted by the remarkable hit single, “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” the album has since achieved 2x platinum certification from the RIAA, with sales now rapidly approaching 3 million. Two further albums completed O’Neill’s planned Christmas Trilogy; 1998’s “The Christmas Attic” and 2004’s “The Lost Christmas Eve,” both of which are currently approaching 2x platinum certification. All three of the Orchestra’s Christmas-themed albums have proven enduring blockbusters, returning annually to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Top Catalog Albums” and “Top Holiday Albums” charts. TSO’s 2009 Winter Tour played to over 1.2 million fans in 80+ cities, and generating revenues of nearly $45 million, which according to Billboard magazine’s midyear touring chart, put them as the #2 most attended tour. Since its first Winter Tour in 1999, TSO has been one of the concert business’s most successful acts, consistently rating in the Top 10 for both gross revenues and audience attendance. In the spring of 2010, TSO debuted the much-anticipated live rock opera “Beethoven’s Last Night,” TSO’s goldcertified rock opera fantasy about “what could have happened” on Beethoven’s final night of life. The successful tour provided the template for their innovative brand of “Rock Theater” and the much-anticipated World Tour in 2011. T h e b a n d ’ s l a t e s t re l e a s e “ N i g h t C a s t l e , ” w h i c h featuring the singles, “Believe” and a cover of the classic “Nutrocker,” burst onto Billboard’s “Top 200” chart and was certified gold in less than 8 weeks.

Travel briefs Zagat says New Orleans most affordable dining in U.S. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans diners got more than good food last year, they also got a price break. According to the latest Zagat Survey, the average cost of a meal in New Orleans has dropped for the first time in a decade, from $28.52 in the last survey to $28.36 this year. Not a huge drop, but enough to rank the Crescent City as the nation’s most affordable dining out locale, well below cities like New York at $42, Chicago at $37, and Los Angeles at $35. New Orleans is also below the national average of $35.37. Zagat surveys customers and rates restaurants on a 30-point scale, on food, decor, service, and cost. The survey found, however, that diners were not happy with the service at many of the city’s restaurants, with 75 percent complaining about it. Despite that, New Orleans diners ranked as the most generous, leaving an average tip of 19.7 percent, compared to the 19.2 percent national average. “New Orleans is one of the nations most culturally and gastronomically diverse cities with strong traditions and cuisines that are unique to the area,” said Tim Zagat, chief executive and co-founder of Zagat Survey. “According to surveyors, it is not only rich culturally, but with affordability as well — something we hope local diners and interested travelers will take advantage of this year.” The latest survey cited several restaurants for the first time, including Eiffel Society, Sylvain and the new Bouligny Tavern, which provide comfortable cuisine for diners, while upscale arrivals include Creole-French eats at the latest location of Dominique’s and Feast. Chef Susan Spicer presented inexpensive fare at Mondo, echoing the affordable-offshoot trend started by Scott Boswell with the unique variety of po’boys at Stanley. Spicer’s restaurant, Bayona, won for Top Food, followed by Stella! and Brigtsen’s, which also won for Top Service. As ever, Commander’s Palace took top honors for decor and overall popularity. Philly Flower Show highlights Paris in springtime PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Get ready for “Springtime in Paris” — in Philadelphia. The annual Philadelphia International Flower Show will boast a Parisian theme during its run from March 6-13 at the convention center, organizers announced Monday. Visitors will enter under a replica of the Eiffel Tower’s base that is 33 feet tall and 75 feet wide. Floral exhibits will represent all aspects of Paris, from the romantic and opulent to the artistic and avant-garde, said design director Sam Lemheney. The event, billed as the nation’s largest flower show, also aims to be more interactive in 2011. It will feature painters, strolling musicians, cafes, wine tastings and cabaret dancers. “The whole feel and vibe of the show will be much more up and happy this year,” said Drew Becher, president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, which has sponsored the show each year since 1829.

December 9, 2010

The event attracts about 250,000 gardening enthusiasts annually and pumps about $35 million into the city’s economy. It is generally welcomed as a sign that winter is ending and spring blossoms are just around the corner.

SeaWorld, Busch Gardens raise admission ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa have both raised their ticket prices. SeaWorld has raised its regular adult admission to $80, an increase of $1. Busch Gardens has raised its regular adult admission to $78, an increase of $3. Both increases went into effect on Friday. The new admission prices follow recent similar increases at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Both parks charge $82 for regular adult admission.

Developer: $400M Catskill hotel plans still alive ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A $400 million plan to build posh hotels high in the Catskill Mountains near an existing ski center has been knocking around since 1999. Supporters say it would bring tourists, jobs and money into the woodsy area and make it a first-class “ski destination.” But after 11 years — or more than half of Rip Van Winkle’s famous 20-year nap in the storied mountains — there’s still no approval for new construction near the state-run Belleayre Mountain Ski Center. Developers say the proposal is still on track. Dean Gitter of Crossroads Ventures said they will submit crucial documents to the state within months. “This is going to happen,” Gitter said this week. “They have only one hope of reversing the economic slide of the last two decades, and that is tourism.” Crossroads wants to link Belleayre to a planned luxury hotel, a family-oriented resort, townhouses and a golf course near the top of a forested Catskills peak about 100 miles northwest of New York City. But while some local business leaders and elected officials see Belleayre as an economic boon, opponents fear the mega-project would pose environmental hazards and would overwhelm the quiet hillside hamlets tucked into the mountains. “You’re essentially creating a village on the mountainside,” said Roger Wall, chairman of the Catskill Heritage Alliance, an environmental preservation group. Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer tried to address those competing interests in a 2007 deal that shrunk the project and moved development away from the most environmentally sensitive areas. Gitter said the current plan calls for 626 units — down from around 750 — including the two hotels and townhouses. Under the deal, the state also agreed to buy 1,216 acres of woodland from the developer to protect it and a defunct ski center near Belleayre. The land purchase was crucial for environmental groups and for New York City, which draws its drinking water from Catskill reservoirs. Spitzer, at a news conference announcing the deal, said the

beefed-up Belleayre — a day trip from New York City — would provide an alternative “ski destination” to Canada, Colorado and the Adirondacks. At the time of the announcement, Gitter said he hoped to start construction in 2008. Things did not go that quickly. While a judge dismissed a lawsuit bought by the Catskill Heritage Alliance and others, it took a long time for developers to prepare their required environmental impact statement. Gitter said they expect to submit it in late January or early February, then hope to present plans by the middle of next year to the planning boards of the two local towns: Shandaken and Middletown. One potential snag involves the plan for the state to buy the sensitive land for $6.3 million. The state comptroller’s office in May told the state Department of Environmental Conservation that the price was too high. DEC spokesman Yancey Roy said Friday that talks about the land were continuing. He provided no details. The lack of apparent progress has fed the rumors that the project lost steam after the recession and Spitzer’s resignation in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. Recently, Gitter and his partners took the step of writing a letter to the Daily Freeman of Kingston to assure locals that the project is still alive. If the project is approved, Gitter hopes to start construction by spring of 2012.

CityCenter picks up AAA award for 2 resorts LAS VEGAS (AP) — CityCenter has picked up AAA’s top rating in its debut year. The once financially troubled casino complex announced Monday that it won the travel group’s Five Diamond Award for both the ARIA resort and casino and the Mandarin Oriental resort on the Las Vegas Strip. At one point, it seemed uncertain that CityCenter would have the money to finish construction and open its doors. According to AAA’s website, the Five Diamond Award goes to properties that provide meticulous service, exceed guest expectations and maintain standards of excellence.

New tourism trail created in West Tennessee MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — State officials are trying to spur tourism in West Tennessee by establishing a new driving trail featuring 196 points of interest and historic sites. The self-guided Walking Tall Trail runs through 360 miles of road in eight West Tennessee counties. It includes Adamsville, home of Sheriff Buford Pusser of “Walking Tall” movie fame; Shiloh, the site of a key Civil War battle; and Memphis, the longtime home of rock ’n roll king Elvis Presley. The concept is similar to the White Lightning Trail, established in June. That trail retraces a network of roadways that spans across nine counties in northeast Tennessee. Tennessee tourism and transportation officials are holding events in Adamsville and Memphis to commemorate the Walking Tall Trail.

Ooh La La

Holiday party looks to bring out the best in the area’s women By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

W

e all want to look our best for the holidays. There are so many new and exciting procedures available that can help us to look younger or just enhance our looks.

Although the expense of these procedures may be a draw back for trying them, Dr. Kristen Jacobs, a women’s health physician and owner of Ooh La La Anti-Aging and Laser Center in Maryville, is going to help with that. She is hosting a holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 9, at Villa Marie Winery in Maryville, to invite the community to come by and learn more about the different services and products that are available through Ooh La La. There is a $10 reservation fee that can be redeemed for Ooh La La’s services or products. There will be special deals offered during the party, representatives from the product companies and staff available to answer your questions or calm your fears about pre-conceived notions you might have about the procedures or products.

December 9, 2010

One of Dr. Jacob’s gifts to the community will be a performance by Nadirah Shakoor, the Grammy Nominated Female Vocalist and the former lead female vocalist of acclaimed hip hop group “Arrested Development.” In the last 13 years, Shakoor has performed as a female vocalist for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. Her new CD “Nod to the Storyteller,” is a tribute to Jimmy Buffett and includes her interpretation of seven of his songs. Shakoor will perform at times throughout the evening, giving attenders a chance to hear her fantastic stylings and still have time to mingle and find out more about Ooh La La. “This will be a great night out before the holidays to enjoy some great music, have some beverages and enjoy some holiday specials. Whether you come with a girlfriend or by yourself, it will be a good time,” said Dr. Jacobs. “I am thrilled to have Nadirah at our event. I am thankful for my patients, staff and community for their support and I am really looking forward to a fabulous time.” Dr. Jacobs not only performs procedures for Ooh La La, but she also has a thriving practice offering health care to women. She moved her practice from the Edwardsville area

to Maryville two years ago and has been involved in aesthetics for the last four years. She is accepting new patients for both practices and just really wanted to host the party to thank the community for the support of her office. Dr. Jacobs offers chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, microcurrent, customizable facials and massage through Ooh La La. She offers great skin care products and make-up and other body products. Dr. Jacobs knows how important it is to treat the whole body. Women, especially, feel better on the inside when they know they look better on the outside. The care her patients receive from her and her staff is second to none. She wants her clients to know that they are important and to come away feeling amazing. So if you have thought about having one of these procedures or would like to find out more about the latest products for helping you look your best, make a reservation today, as seating is limited. For reservations, call 288-9117. Dr. Jacobs’ offices are located at 2102 Vadalabene Dr., in Maryville. If you can’t make the party but would like to find out more about her women’s health practice or Ooh La La, feel free to call 288-9117. You can also visit www.kristenjacobs.com.

Helping kids with college essays N E W Y O R K ( A P ) — Wi t h c o l l e g e application deadlines looming, the pressure is on for high school seniors to write the perfect essay. But what are schools really looking for? And what role should parents play when teens try to sum up their lives in a few hundred words? Here are some insights from admissions officials at The Ohio State University and at Oberlin College, along with advice from the author of “Write Your College Essay In Less Than a Day.” Ohio State, one of the country’s biggest schools with 56,000 students on its Columbus campus, gets 26,600 applications a year and admits more than 14,000 students. “When you’re getting the volume of applications we do, you put the greatest weight on the high school transcript and performance in high school,” said Mabel Freeman, assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions. But like a lot of colleges, Ohio State also asks applicants to write 300 words on why they are interested in attending. “Our use of the essay is to try to determine if this is going to be a good match for an institution and a student,” Freeman said. “We are a big public research institution, diverse and urban. For the right student, this is the right place. But for some students, it could be overwhelming.” She added that “the essay will never trump the transcript, but it can be the tipping point.” Students who are unable to visit the campus

should try to find an online video tour and look at the college website and other material so they can show in their essay that they understand what the school offers and why it’s a good match. As for the 300-word limit, Freeman says, “most of my faculty and admissions professionals are not sure that any 17-yearold has much more than 300 well thought-out words to say on any topic. Make your point and be done. Organize your thoughts, make your statement and defend it. Why would this be a place that could help you be successful?” What about the parent’s role? “I’m fine with a student running the app past mom or dad, saying, ’Does this look correct to you? Am I saying things that seem right about who I am?”’ Freeman said. “We’re very concerned about the student who finishes at 1 a.m. and hits send without anybody looking at that app in the light of day.” On the other hand, parents must not be so over-involved that they write the essay. One year, Ohio State asked applicants to suggest a course they might add to their high school curriculum if they were principal. One writer suggested an advanced biology course, adding something like, “If my son had such a course, he would be in better shape.” “It couldn’t have been more blatant” that the applicant’s parent had written the essay, Freeman said. Oberlin College, also located in Ohio, is a small private school with 2,900 students.

Oberlin received 6,000 applications last year, admitted a third and enrolled 700. Like hundreds of other schools, Oberlin uses the online Common Application, which includes six essay choices on topics like writing about someone who’s had an influence on you or discussing an issue of personal, local, national or international concern. Oberlin also has a supplemental essay with a theme found on many apps: “Given your interests, values, and goals, explain why Oberlin College will help you grow (as a student and a person) during your undergraduate years.” “It is a way for our admissions committee members to get a sense of fit between the applicant and Oberlin, and allows us to envision how this applicant may become part of the fabric of our community,” said Debra Chermonte, Oberlin’s dean of admissions and financial aid. She said admissions officers “aren’t looking for perfection in 17- and 18-year-olds. We are looking for the human being behind the roster of activities and grades. We are looking for students who love to learn, whose investment in ideas and words tell us that they are aware of their world beyond their own homes, schools, grades and scores.” Essays also demonstrate writing skills. “We also want to see that a student is able to write that first paper for a freshman seminar while avoiding careless mistakes that will drive faculty crazy,” Chermonte said. Parents, she added, “can be great critics

and editors.” In one essay Oberlin received, an applicant professed admiration for Julie Taymor, an Oberlin grad who created “The Lion King” musical. Unfortunately, the applicant spelled it as “The Loin King,” an error that a parent proofreader might have caught. Wissner-Gross, author of “Write Your College Essay in Less Than a Day” (Random House, $15), says the hardest part of writing a college essay is finding the right topic. “Everyone has stories to tell, and you don’t have to be the top student to have a great story,” said Wissner-Gross, whose website is EducationalStrategy.org. “If you find that you’re laboring over it, it probably isn’t the right story. If it’s the right story, then you’ll be dying to tell it and it’ll be fun to write.” She added: “The main thing colleges want to know is why they should accept you. You want your essay to tell them that as directly as possible.” Depending on the topic, “the best way to do it is to tell a real story that gives them one slice of your life rather than trying to summarize your life in 500 words. Think of a good story that shows your greatest achievement so far. It doesn’t have to be that you cured cancer or published a novel. It could be an act of compassion or community service, or something related to a job, or how you dealt with a challenge or a hardship growing up.”

Palin book lauds “Juno,” snubs JFK speech NEW YORK (AP) — In her new book, Sarah Palin takes on everything from “American Idol” to “American Beauty,” revives talk of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and finds fault in JFK’s famous religion speech, saying he “seemed to want to run away” from his faith. Who gets praise? Simon Cowell, for one. And the movies “Juno,” “Knocked Up” and “40-Year-Old Virgin.” Barack Obama? Unsurprisingly, not so much. She accuses him of reflecting “a stark lack of faith in the American people,” among many other things — without tipping her hand on whether she will challenge him in 2012. “America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag,” which has been billed as a tribute to American values, comes out Nov. 23. The Associated Press purchased a copy. Palin’s first book, the memoir “Going Rogue,” has sold more than 2 million copies. In a chapter on faith and public life, Palin addresses at length John F. Kennedy’s noted speech on religion during the 1960 campaign — a speech many saw as crucial to counter sentiment that his faith would hold undue sway over him if he became the nation’s first Catholic president. “I am not the Catholic candidate for president,” Kennedy said at the time. “I am the Democratic Party’s cand i d a t e f o r p re s i d e n t , w h o

happens also to be a Catholic.” Palin writes that when she was growing up, she was taught that JFK’s speech reconciled religion and public service without compromising either. But since she’s revisited the speech as an adult, she says, she’s realized that Kennedy “essentially declared religion to be such a private matter that it was irrelevant to the kind of

country we are.” She praises Mitt Romney, a Mormon, for not “doing a JFK” during his campaign for the 2008 GOP nomination. “Where Kennedy seemed to want to run away from religion, Mitt Romney forthrightly embraced it,” she writes. She attributes the gulf not just to the difference between the men, but to the distance the country has come

since 1960. Now, she says, America is “reawakening to the gift of our religious heritage.” Palin is not the first conservative to challenge Kennedy’s speech. Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania made similar remarks in September, saying he had admired Kennedy’s speech as

a youth but later realized that “on that day, Kennedy chose not just to dispel fear, he chose to expel faith.” Historian Ted Widmer, who included the JFK speech in a Library of America anthology of the country’s oratory, said he was surprised by Palin’s comments.

“127 Hours”

This strangely serves as a persuasive tourism promotion for getting away from it all and going exploring in middle-ofnowhere Utah. Really, it does, even after James Franco finds himself trapped beneath a boulder for — that’s right — 127 hours while exploring caves and canyons by himself. Director Danny Boyle, working again with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “28 Days Later”) as well as Enrique Chediak (”28 Weeks Later”), makes this remote, sun-drenched part of the country look dazzling — appealing in its vastness, dramatic in its severity. And even though the movie is about a man who’s stagnant for five days straight, Boyle makes the story vital and vibrant in his signature kinetic style. Despite the physical restrictions of this real-life tale, the way Boyle and co-writer Simon Beaufoy tell it are boundless. “127 Hours” skips around in time and place. It takes us outside the canyon and deep within one man’s isolation and fear. It’s the one-man Franco show, and the actor gives a tour-de-force performance, displaying every bit of his range. RATED: R for language and some disturbing violent content/bloody images. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three and a half stars out of four.

“Unstoppable”

Finally, we’ve found the ideal use for Tony Scott’s hyperkinetic, headache-inducing filmmaking style: a movie about a runaway train, barreling through small Pennsylvania towns filled with hardworking, unsuspecting people, at 80 mph. And threatening schoolchildren. Oh, and the train is a half-mile long and it’s carrying hazardous material. Sounds insanely implausible, but that’s part of the fun: How many layers of danger can they pile on here? Scott starts slowly and steadily cranks up the tension, and given the escalating action, his trademark tricks make sense. The grainy camerawork and various exposures, the snap zooms and quick edits all enhance the incessant sense of motion. The train rumbles and growls, rattles and clangs, and we’re in the middle of it all — on the tracks, between the wheels, underneath and on top of the cars. It’s overwhelming — but in a good way. While the premise may sound crazy — or like something out of a star-studded ‘70s disaster movie — it really happened. Mark Bomback’s script is based on a 2001 incident in Ohio in which a train carrying hazardous cargo traveled 66 miles without a crew. But because this is a movie, the speeds are even faster, the danger is even greater, and there’s only one man who can stop it and save all those innocent lives: Denzel Washington. With some help from Chris Pine. RATED: PG-13 for sequences of action and peril, and some language. RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”

Fear and loathing, doom and gloom permeate nearly every minute of the beginning of the end of the behemoth boy-wizard series. This seventh film in the franchise, directed once again by David Yates (who previously helmed parts five and six, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”), begins with nearly suffocating tension, as Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) finds himself face-to-face with his destiny: being the target of the evil Lord Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) deadly wrath. Friends and allies will have to band together to protect him; some of them won’t make it out alive. Finally, the weight of Harry’s past and the frightening unknown of his future, as detailed so thoroughly and vividly in J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, are about to collide. Yates’ film is gorgeously bleak, with sprawling, end-of-the-Earth shots of foreboding mountains and lonely beaches from Oscarnominated cinematographer Eduardo Serra (“Girl With a Pearl Earring”) that reflect the characters’ moods. The films have grown darker in tone and theme, and given this heightened emotional challenge, the three young stars (Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint) once again rise to it. Having spent half their lives in these characters, their interactions with one another seem more comfortable and believable than ever. But because “Part 1” sets up the final showdown in “Part 2” — which Yates also directed, due in July — there’s lots of exposition in Steve Kloves’ script, lots of characters and plot lines introduced and reintroduced from films past. While it’s thrilling off the top, it repeatedly sags in the middle before ultimately picking up at the cliffhanger climax. RATED: PG-13 for some sequences of intense action violence and frightening images. RUNNING TIME: 143 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“Made in Dagenham” Sally Hawkins does her best Sally Field impression here,

playing a plucky Ford factory worker who rouses her fellow female employees to go on strike in demand of equal pay. But whereas “Norma Rae” had some realism and grit to it, “Made in Dagenham” is a by-the-numbers tale of women taking on the big boys, underdogs beating the big corporation. An inspiring

story, sure, but director Nigel Cole (“Calendar Girls”) and writer William Ivory tell it without offering much surprise. The performances from Hawkins and co-stars Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson and especially Rosamund Pike are what elevate the material above its predictability and cliches. “Made in Dagenham” is based on real events that took place in 1968 at the Ford factory in Dagenham, England, along the Thames River about 12 miles outside London. The 187 women who worked there — “girls” as they were called, regardless of age — toiled away stitching car seat upholstery. But the auto maker deemed them unskilled laborers and proposed a pay cut. Urged to air the women’s grievances, Hawkins’ Rita O’Grady surprises herself, and everyone else, by declaring a strike. Watching this normally reserved wife and mother of two discover a voice she never knew she had offers some exciting moments, and Hawkins, who was so infectiously charming in “Happy-GoLucky,” is delightful here, as well. RATED: R for language and brief sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING Two and a half stars out of four.

“The Next Three Days”

The main dynamic you have to accept — the one that the entire story, all the drama, all the risk hinge upon — is that Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks actually belong together. Always strong individually, they make no sense as a couple. Chalk it up to miscasting, a lack of chemistry, whatever: It’s simply too hard to buy them as husband and wife. And that’s a problem, since it undermines our ability to become emotionally immersed in the life-threatening danger in which they find themselves. As a result, Paul Haggis’ thriller, based on the 2008 French film “Anything for Her,” ends up feeling even more implausible than it might have. A couple of exciting chase sequences in the film’s third act and intense moments within Crowe and Banks’ performances, as well as one great scene involving Liam Neeson, unfortunately can’t salvage the whole endeavor. The latest movie from the Oscar-winning “Crash” director finds Banks’ Lara Brennan being charged and convicted of killing her boss in a Pittsburgh parking garage. Once all of Lara’s appeals have run out and she’s on the verge of being transferred to a state penitentiary, her husband, John, hatches a scheme to break her out of the joint. John, mind you, is a mildmannered community college English professor who already has his hands full caring for the couple’s 6-year-old son, Luke (Ty Simpkins), alone. RATED: PG-13 for violence, drug material, language, some sexuality and thematic elements. RUNNING TIME: 122 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING Two stars out of four.

Movies Gloom, doom loom in “Deathly Hallows” By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press Fear and loathing, doom and gloom permeate nearly every minute of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” the beginning of the end of the behemoth boy-wizard series. Serra has never shot a “Harry Potter” movie before and brings a totally different kind of artfulness to the aesthetics while still remaining consistent with this familiar world. (“Part 1” is in 2-D because, thankfully, Warner Bros. chose not to rush the 3-D conversion process; “Part 2” will be in 3-D when it hits theaters in July.) Actors Rupert Grint, center, Evanna Lynch, left, and Bonnie Wright pose for a photocall, with a sign of new Harry Potter series title: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” in Tokyo, Nov. 19, 2010 it. Having spent half their lives in these characters, their interactions with one another seem more comfortable and believable than ever. Radcliffe has been solid for a while now, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger has grown into an engaging young woman, but Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley gives his most confident performance yet. The supporting cast, as always, is mind-bogglingly star-studded, led by Ralph Fiennes as the fearsome Voldemort and Alan Rickman as the

duplicitous Professor Snape, and including Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, Julie Walters and newcomer Bill Nighy. It’s a welcome sight to see the return of larger-than-life character actors like Robbie Coltrane as the lovable lug Hagrid and Brendan Gleeson as the irreverent “Mad-Eye” Moody; on the other end of the spectrum is Toby Jones, returning as the voice of the diminutive and heroic house elf Dobby. But because “Part 1” sets up the

final showdown in “Part 2” — which Yates also directed — there’s lots of exposition in Steve Kloves’ script, lots of characters and plot lines introduced and reintroduced from films past. While it’s thrilling off the top, it repeatedly sags in the middle before ultimately picking up at the cliffhanger climax. Voldemort is on the hunt for Harry, and has sent his minions to capture him alive so that he can kill him himself. Meanwhile, Harry, Hermione and Ron must track

down and destroy the Horcruxes — scattered containers that hold pieces of Voldemort’s soul, which are crucial to Harry’s survival. But this pursuit is more dangerous than ever, since Voldemort’s Death Eaters have taken over the Ministry of Magic, leaving Harry with less protection. And as we know from the previous film, the regal and wise Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon, in brief flashbacks) isn’t around to help him, either.

“Tangled” and “Faster” set good holiday pace By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Between pumpkin pie, a home game for Detroit, and the d e p e n d a b i l i t y o f t h e s t ro n g h o l i d a y b ox office, Thanksgiving is script ready in my life. This year was particularly exciting due to four quality new releases. “Burlesque” brings Cher back to the limelight, in a musical no less. “Love & Other Drugs: is getting more acclaim for its revealing nude sequences than its actual merits (both acting and otherwise). The other two releases - “Tangled” and “Faster” - are also quite good. It’s not going to be a typical Disney classic, I’m sorry to say. “Tangled” is vibrant, intelligent, chock full of sple n d i d m u s i c al s e q u e n c e s , a n d f e a t u re s a unique array of fun characters. It is essentially the story of Rapunzel, but twisted to feature the male character as the lead in a bid for a movie that can appeal equally to boys and girls. Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) is a petty thief who stumbles upon a hidden tower one day while fleeing from all the king’s men. Hidden in that tower, away from the world and the people in it, is a fair

December 9, 2010

maiden who may or may not be a missing princess. Voiced by Mandy Moore, Rapunzel is plucky and cutely vulnerable. The animation that makes her miles long hair come to life as a tool, a weapon, and certainly as a fashion accessory is amazing. It’s almost has a mind of its own. The story isn’t as blessed. What’s truly sad is that what I so loved on-screen has completely left my mind only a few days later. T h e g re a t s o n g s , b y l o n g t i m e D i s n e y m a e s t ro A l a n Menken, aren’t exactly unforgettable. I found them quite charming at the time, but nothing stuck with me like, say, “Hakuna Matata.” The anthropomorphized animal characters - a mute chameleon and a very limber horse - are funny, but hardly as enduring as Lumiere (the candelabra from “Beauty & the Beast”) or Sebastian (the Rastafarian crab from “The Little Mermaid”). ••• Tangled runs 114 minutes and is rated PG for brief mild violence. I give this film two and a half stars out of four. Dwayne Johnson gives new meaning to the phrase ‘ n o n - s t o p a c t i o n ’ i n h i s n e w m o v i e , F a s t e r. F ro m the opening sequence straight through to the violent

conclusion, “Faster” does not stop with fast cars (a Chevelle Super Sport never gets old), fast fists, and faster guns. It’s a thrill ride fueled by revenge. Johnson is Driver, a recently-released inmate that takes no time on the outside for himself before moving on to kill the men that shot his brother ten years earlier. Standing in his way are Cop (Billy Bob Thornton), a crooked and cocaine-addicted police officer, and Killer (Olive Jackson-Cohen), a contract hitman, both of whom want Driver silenced. Besides the unique way of naming the characters and providing flashbacks to their previous deeds, “Faster” brings little in terms of plot development. Maggie Grace, Carla Gugino, Mike Epps, and Tom Berenger costar, but have little to do, really. The movie is so simplistic, in fact, that Driver has almost no dialogue at all. Despite being the main character, I don’t think he utters ten lines during the whole picture. Adrenaline, it turns out, can anchor a picture all on its own. ••• “Faster” runs 111 minutes and is rated R for strong violence, some drug use, and language. I give this film two stars out of four.

Lewis savors return to film spotlight NEW YORK (AP) — It’s nearly nine o’clock on a Friday night, and Juliette Lewis is dashing to her second movie theater of the evening, preparing for another Q&A about “Conviction,” which stars Hilary Swank but is garnering Lewis a considerable amount of acclaim. Due to a timing mix-up, some theatergoers have already started to leave when she arrives, and by the time Lewis starts to take questions about her brief but gripping role as a woman who wrongly sends a man to prison, the theater is about half-full. Yet Lewis takes question after question and talks with fans who come up to her afterward to get a closer look at the star, who is dressed casually in a black jacket and jeans. Surely, there are more exciting things to do on a Friday night in New York City. But Lewis doesn’t mind. After a nearly five-year break from appearing in films, the 37-year-old actress is savoring every moment in the spotlight, especially with very early Oscar buzz for “Conviction.” “With this movie, I’m kind of having the time of my life in that I never expected the reception I’ve been getting for my role, never,” says Lewis, while riding in the back of a Cadillac Escalade that is ferrying her around the city. “Everything about it has been a joy.” She’s had a similar kind of joy about her re-emergence in Hollywood after abandoning films to concentrate on a rock c a re e r t h a t i s n o w re s p e c t e d and thriving. Lewis — whose celebrated acting career includes an Oscar nomination for 1991’s “Cape Fear” when she was just a teen and seminal roles in movies like “Natural Born Killers” — decided in 2003 that she wanted to do more than just dabble in music. Unlike most actors who moonlight as musicians but don’t give up their day jobs, Lewis did just that, dropping out of acting to tour with her band, Juliette and the Licks, with their thrashing, aggressive brand of rock. “It’s sort of when I decide to do something, I’m gonna do it all the way,” says Lewis, adding later: “In my head, in my creative heart, I wouldn’t have been able to do both.” While her decision was greeted with derision in some circles, she proved her mettle by immersing herself in the life of a musician, not only playing overseas and at rock festivals like Lollapalooza, but also in small clubs and hipster venues. “In the beginning, they’re just curious,” she says, laughing. “So the expectations are really low. So that was great for me. But then

Juliette Lewis after that you get the people who are really digging what you’re doing and your music.” She released two albums, wrote songs and collaborated with rockers like Dave Grohl. She earned respect from fellow musicians and fans alike, even though she still smarts about that snarky album review from a certain magazine that belittled her going from acting to singing. Ironically, just when she was

getting more established in the music world, she underwent another transition, disbanding her initial band and forming another while putting out a solo record. Then, as she was working on her last record, “Terra Incognita,” released in 2009, acting began to pull at her when Drew Barrymore offered her a starring role in “Whip It,” Barrymore’s directorial d e b u t , a b o u t t h e ro u g h - a n d tumble world of female roller-

derby players. Feeling confident of her footing in the music arena, Lewis felt comfortable in stepping away for a return to movies. She also missed acting. “I’m in my 30s; I’m not done. I don’t want my best work to be behind me in my 20s. I feel like this is a new chapter,” says Lewis with her always-intense gaze. “I have more life experience, I have m o re c o n f i d e n c e i n w h a t I ’ m doing, so I feel like I have more to offer creatively in the world of cinema. But I have to work my way into making myself known again in some circles.” She’s made considerable headway. In the past year, she’s been in a variety of films, from her supporting role in the Jennifer Aniston comedy “The Switch” to the emotional Mark Ruffalo film “Sympathy for Delicious” to her recent small part in the Robert Downey hit comedy “Due Date,” where she plays a pot dealer. “I just love doing things completely different,” she says. It is her role as Roseanna Perry, a character in the true story of a woman who transforms herself from a high school dropout to a lawyer to win freedom for her wrongly accused brother, that is generating the very earliest of Oscar talk for Lewis. Her role is small — only two scenes — but pivotal. Lewis masters a Boston accent and wears prosthetic rotten teeth as she

embodies a damaged, embittered character who is a villain yet sympathetic at the same time. Tony Goldwyn, the director of “Conviction,” knew early on that he wanted Lewis for the role, but worried the part was too small. He offered it to her anyway, and to his surprise, not only did she take it, but Lewis also completely transformed herself for what would be just a few minutes of screen-time. “She just complete immersed herself as if she was going to be shooting for six months, and I thought, ’Wow, that’s a worldclass actress,”’ he says. “When we were in that trailer, shooting that (pivotal) scene, all of our jaws were on the floor.” Though Lewis has been celebrated for other roles and heard her name mentioned in award talk, it’s particularly special this time around. “(It’s) really scary in a tickling sweet sense,” she says wistfully. “I’m honestly beyond flattered and overjoyed that it’s being received in that way.” It’s a genuine feeling that’s clear to her Hollywood peers. “Having been away from acting for a while, particularly having been so successful so young ... she seemed to have returned to acting with this joy for it. She sort of shed any of that pressure that Hollywood puts on you,” Goldwyn said. “It was wonderful to see

Axel France stirs things up at Grace Manor

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

hen you meet Axel France, you don’t necessarily think executive chef. You think: young, hip, handsome, amazing tattoo work, etc. But taste one of his dishes and your thoughts change to: perfection, amazing, flavorful, filling, fresh, experienced and a host of other adjectives that would not fit in with the first impression. But the truth is, all of these words are Axel. Axel is young, he is hip and he does have some amazing tattoo work but he also is blazing a culinary trail in Edwardsville that is both cutting edge, yet pleasing and filling to both men and women without breaking the bank. It seems that when a new restaurant that offers fine cuisine opens, there is a sigh from many men, and some women too, that they are going to get small portions on a foo-foo accented plate for a large price. Some actually feel they come away hungry or don’t recognize what they even ate. Axel France, the new executive chef at Grace Manor, is changing that image by offering an amazing menu full of great dishes that everyone can recognize, enjoy and come away feeling like they got the meal that they paid for. The ambiance at Grace Manor is eclectic, but very comfortable. It can be romantic, but still casual enough to be a good business meeting setting, a friends night out or a small group gathering. The restaurant is located in a h i s t o r i c b u i l d i n g , w i t h t h re e separate dining areas that can seat approximately 50 people. It is the perfect place to create some great memories and have a fantastic time with friends and/or loved ones. Debra Grace is the owner of Grace Manor and she has been the executive chef since the opening. She was missing out

Axel France at Grace Manor on so many aspects of owning a restaurant including creating a relationship with her diners. She made the decision to bring in a new executive chef to allow her the freedom to do the things she was missing out on. Enter, Axel France. Debra still assists in the kitchen when needed and of course she still creates dishes and loves to cook. She just wants her restaurant to be a special destination and wanted to be able to concentrate more on creating that environment. Her efforts are working. Axel has been given a lot of freedom to create seasonal menus that change four times a year. He is adding some special dinners to the calendar, including a Christmas Eve dinner – which will introduce the new winter menu and also include some special dishes just for the evening. There will also be a New Year ’s Eve special dinner and they are planning more wine tasting dinners. Axel graduated in 2005 from L’Ecole Culinaire in St. Louis. Since then he has expanded his culinary wings at Cardwell’s on the Plaza, Harvest Market Seasonal Cuisine in the Clayton area, Frank Papa’s and Jimmy’s on the Park. He was considering an offer at Terrace View in downtown St. Louis when he received the offer from Grace Manor Restaurant, and obviously he decided on the latter. As a 28-year-old chef, Axel knew he was ready to run his own kitchen and once he met Debra, he

knew this was the place to make his executive debut. Since beginning, Axel has been steering Debra to make Grace Manor a full service restaurant. The once known tea room, has had a slow transition, but it is time for the restaurant to make a total transition and become more than a lunch attraction. Dinner is now a main focus, although lunch will not be forgotten or neglected. There will be great dishes served at both. When describing his cuisine, Axel explains that his creations are very approachable, new-age American cuisine with some French and Japanese flavorings. He does all he can to use local fresh produce and meat. “I want to get back to Midwest’s roots. I grew up in Kentucky and I cook what I know people in this area want,” said Axel. T h e i n g re d i e n t s f ro m t h e i r menus come from Rensing Farms, Biver Farms, Daydream Farms, Ozark Forest Mushrooms, from Andy Aiers at Eat Here St. Louis among others. “I get my products from these local places because I want to know where it comes from, who is growing it and what they are using in the growing process. I use organics when possible. I consider my food as ‘glorified honest comfort food,’” said Axel. Not only does the menu change each season, the entire restaurant decor changes along with it.

The local made wines and beers also adjust as with the selection of specialty bar beverages. Grace Manor offers a selection of Schlafly beers and a number of local wines. For just a tasting of the winter menu, here are some of Axel’s comfort food selections: Beer Braised Short Beef Ribs; Smoked Tu r k e y L e g w i t h W h i p p e d Potatoes, Cranberry Compote and a side of Turkey Au Jus; An AllBeef Hot Dog from Rensing Farms served on a Companion Semolina Bun, served with a choice of house made Spicy Relish, house made Mustard, or house made Chili topping. Chili is going to be the main soup of the winter season. Some of the dessert selections will be a Cranberry Rosemary Corn Cake-which is one of Debra’s creations and a Creme’ Brulee’ along with others. Dining Delights White House shares cookie recipe NEW YORK (AP) – To help celebrate the holidays at the White House, pastry chef Bill Yosses created a 350-pound replica of the White House made of gingerbread and covered in white chocolate. This year’s version even features a larger-than-scale replica of Bo, the Obama family dog, made of marzipan and condensed milk. WHITE HOUSE GINGERBREAD COOKIES: Start to finish: 1 hour (plus overnight chilling) Makes 50 (4-inch) cookies 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 2 cups packed dark brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 cup molasses 7 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt Zest of 1 lemon Zest of 1 orange In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter and brown sugar for 5 minutes. One at a time, add the eggs, then the molasses. Set aside. Into a medium bowl, sift together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. With the mixer on low, add a third of the dry ingredients to the buttersugar mixture. Beat until just mixed in, then stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Repeat this process with the remaining thirds of the dry ingredients. Add both zests and mix until just incorporated. Transfer the dough to a sheet of plastic wrap, spreading the dough until 1 inch thick. Cover with another sheet of plastic wrap, then refrigerate overnight. When ready to bake, heat the oven to 350 F. Remove the dough from the refrigerator. Break off a small piece of dough and roll it out on a floured surface to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. The dough is very wet, so add flour and turn it over frequently while rolling to prevent sticking. Use a 4-inch gingerbread person cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Repeat with remaining dough. Arrange the cookies on a baking sheet (you may need to use a thin spatula to move them) leaving about 1 inch all around. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet for 1 minute, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, decorate as desired.
