“We appreciate this great bird for many reasons, Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson said. “Not only is it the symbol of our country and great American patriotism, but it is a part of the wildlife right here in our own backyard. We are very grateful to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the World Bird Sanctuary for helping us offer everyone the chance to see this magnificent bird.” Spotting Scopes will be available at the Loading Dock, the 3rd Chute Bar and Grill and t h e G r a f t o n Vi s i t o r s ’ C e n t e r. A bald eagle the kids like eagle viewing, zip lining, parasailing, boat cruises and Water Park,” Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson concluded. Other Grafton attractions: Grafton Zipline Adventures Looking for a jaw dropping, heart racing experience? Try Grafton's thrilling attraction – a zip line that affords those brave enough a stunning river view and hours of fun. It is one of the largest zip lines in Illinois. “My 85-yr-old mom and I had an awesome time,” writes one Grafton visitor f ro m C h i c a g o . “ T h e 2 5 0 f o o t ‘Soaring Eagle’ was amazing. I enjoyed looking out over the valley while I flew; perfect experience.” Captain Andy's Parasail Get high in Grafton at Captain Andy’s Parasail! Stay dry and come as you are! Soar along the bluffs above the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and experience this exhilarating time with someone special. Fly two by two or alone. Your nonparasailing friends can ride in the boat and share in your fun as they watch you rise skyward! Captain Andy has flown families with parasailers age 4 to 98! Only GRAFTON offers parasailing in Illinois! “My daughter and I did it and it was amazing!” Joann from Quincy, Ill. said. “Captain Andy and crew are safety conscious, fun to be around and knowledgeable about the area. Who knew we could drive just 2 hours and have such a cool experience! There were 6 others on the boat with us, and watching them, and the boat ride itself were just as enjoyable as actually ‘flying.’” Hakuna Matata - Take a relaxing riverboat ride aboard the Hakuana Matata. Several cruises are offered
during the summer months from Grafton Harbor. According to experts the name Hakuna Matata, originated from a Swahili phrase that can be translated literally as “No Worries!” which is exactly the attitude on Grafton Harbor ’s newest tour boat says sailors. Pere Marquette State Park With nearly 8,000 acres of scenic beauty, Pere Marquette State Park is one of the most picturesque and beautiful locations on the Illinois River. As the largest state park in Illinois, visitors love coming to the park for hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and scenic drives. The centerpiece of the park is the massive lodge and cabins. Built in the 1930s, the lodge has a distinct flavor of native stone and rustic timbers. The most prominent feature of the lodge is the 700-ton fireplace in the Great Room Lobby along with the life-size chess board and pieces. Elegant dining services are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lodge is famous in the area for their family-style fried chicken dinner and Sunday brunch buffet. The lodge works great with groups during the busiest seasons of the year - fall colors and eagles. “The state park, Illinois River and close proximity to St. Louis make Pere Marquette an excellent stop for a driving vacation,” Carol from Saint Paul, Minn. said. “The main lodge is my favorite part - many comfortable chairs for reading and relaxation. Try to do at least two nights, if possible.” Raging Rivers Water Park Featuring eight attractions that are sure to keep guests cool when the summer heat sizzles, Raging Rivers offers entertainment for individuals of all ages. Thrill seekers will enjoy the seamless 500-foot dual Cascade Body Flumes that twist and turn down the natural hills and contours
of the park; the Runaway Rafts, a 600-foot-long adventure through swift water and wild rapids to three pools; the Shark Slide flume, which floats riders down a 45-foot tunnel flume into a catch pool and the one-of-a-kind Swirlpool. The twobowl attraction takes riders down a tunnel flume, then swiftly into a giant vortex and ends by dropping the guest into a deep pool of water, incorporating three rides into one. “We had a wonderful time on a really hot St. Louis day,” Tom from St. Louis said. “I loved the view of the river, the professional staff, the reasonable prices, thrilling rides, and friendly people. This is a hidden gem that reminds me of a country resort tucked away in the middle of nowhere. It was so much fun.” Pere Marquette Cross - On June 10, 1673, French explorer Louis Joliet and Jesuit priest Father Jacques Marquette led the first French expedition down the Mississippi River in search of the Pacific Ocean. The expedition followed the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Arkansas River, at which point the Native Americans there informed them that they were only about ten days away from the Gulf of Mexico, not the Pacific Ocean. Fearing that they may be captured by the Native Americans or Spanish, they chose to turn around and begin their journey home. In 1929, John D. McAdams, business manager of the Alton Telegraph, made the suggestion to create a monument commemorating Jacques Marquette as the first European to land in Illinois. This suggestion was made to H. H. Ferguson, a local landowner, who had the monument designed. The monument was erected where Ferguson believed the mouth of the Illinois River was

likely to have been located at the time of Marquette’s expedition. Cut from a solid piece of dolomite, the monument is seven feet six inches high. It is situated on a ledge of a bluff that overlooks the Illinois River. Two flights of dolomite stairs lead from the Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail up to the cross. Grafton’s Wine and Dining Buzz – Grafton’s dining scene continues to delight the palates of locals and visitors alike. The hometown and casual atmosphere infuses river flavors in restaurants up and down the Grafton riverfront. Aeries’s Riverview Winery and Grafton Winery & Brewhaus offer a wide selection of local and esquisite wine. Grab a home cooked meal at Fin Inn, Pere Marquette Lodge & Conference Center, Ruebel Hotel & Restaurant or the loading dock. “This place has it all, great food, great beer and wine and fantastic ambience with views of the river,” Barbara from Springfield, Ill. wrote of the Grafton Winery & Brewhaus. About Grafton - The options are endless for your next Grafton g e t a w a y. Wa t e r r e c r e a t i o n abounds from racing down the waterslides at Raging Rivers Waterpark to paddling your way down the Illinois River in a canoe. First class boating facilities can be found at the Grafton Harbor, a full service marina offering both transient slips for short stays and long-term docking. The new zipline is calling those looking for a thrill, or enjoy a soft adventure with biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding and more at Illinois' largest state park – Pere Marquette State Park. Luther Ely Smith Square, after renovations, above, and before, below.
CityArchRiver project complete For The Edge CityArchRiver project partners announced recently that Luther Ely Smith Square, which includes the Park Over the Highway, part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, has opened to the public. Construction began on Luther Ely Smith Square in December of 2014 to re-landscape the park just east of the Old Courthouse and join it with the new one-block land bridge over I-44. The park will lead to the new entrance of the Gateway Arch visitor center and museum. New features of Luther Ely Smith Square include more than 300 feet of

benches, inviting and accessible pathways, lighting, and more than 220 new trees. Hundreds of shrubs and perennials will create a unique colorful landscape all year. Crews also installed underground cisterns that can hold up to 65,000 gallons of storm water to be reused for irrigating the park, one of the many green components of the CityArchRiver project. This redesigned section of the park is intended to provide new gathering places for visitors before entering the Arch visitor center and museum. It will also be a great place for downtown workers and residents to enjoy a meal, relax, exercise, or play. A

temporary viewing platform is installed in Luther Ely Smith Square so that visitors can watch construction of the visitor center and museum renovation. Other components of the CityArchRiver project are expected to open in 2016 and 2017. The renovation of Luther Ely Smith Square and landscaping of the Park Over the Highway was funded privately through the CityArchRiver Foundation. The square is named in honor of Luther Ely Smith (1873– 1951), a civic booster and philanthropist whose advocacy led to the creation of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. CityArchRiver is a transformational
project that is enhancing the Gateway Arch experience for all visitors. The project will create a seamless park experience from the city to the Mississippi River, providing visitors with a more vibrant place to visit, enjoy, and return. CityArchRiver is a public-private partnership including the National Park Service, Missouri Department of Transportation, Great Rivers Greenway, City of St. Louis, Bi-State Development, Jefferson National Parks Association, CityArchRiver Foundation and many other organizations. Pictured are two scenes from the Mission: Mars exhibit, which is now open at the Saint Louis Science Center.
New exhibit open at the Saint Louis Science Center For The Edge On Nov. 21, the Saint Louis Science Center opened Mission: Mars, an interactive exhibition designed to immerse visitors in the exploration of Mars in the current day and in the future. Developed by the Saint Louis Science Center in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA’s Johnson Space Center, this unique exhibition will engage visitors in two separate but connected locations within the facility. The opening will be marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium at 9:30 a.m. “We are living in an incredible time with the exploration of Mars, and want to give our visitors the chance to experience the technology behind this exploration first-hand through Mission: Mars,” said Christian Greer, chief education and programs officer for the Saint Louis Science Center. “Through this immersive exhibit, visitors will be able to engage in the exploration of Mars by actually learning how to program rovers that are modeled like the real rovers that are on the planet right now. We hope this one-of-akind exhibit ignites curiosity and inspires our younger visitors to continue to support and participate in space exploration.” Guests have two portions of the exhibit to choose from to begin their Mars experience. In the Saint Louis Science Center ’s main building (located at 5050 Oakland), guests can engage with one area of the exhibit, named Mission: Mars – Control. In this portion of the exhibit, guests experience current day exploration operations by assuming the role of an engineer at a NASA Engineering Lab, designing and building a robotic rover to explore Mars. They will have the opportunity to program a rover and experience the challenges of driving it in a simulated time delay, while seeing the planet from the perspective of a rover. The second portion of the exhibit in the James S. McDonnell Planetarium is called Mission Mars – Base, and is resembles a realistic work environment on Mars
in the year 2076. Taking on the role of an astronaut living on Mars, visitors will be able to perform science operations at key locations on the planet, using Allison’s Hope Foundation, recently presented a $10,000 check to the Anderson Hospital Foundation. a rover much like the one used on Mars now. Two rovers were specially designed for this exhibit, and were named Intrepid and Adventure, names that were selected by the public through an online poll. The content with the Mission: Mars exhibition reflects the goals of NASA’s Office of Education: to engage citizens in NASA’s missions and share NASA’s current understanding of the planet. The Mission: Mars exhibit is particularly meaningful within the St. Louis community, given the city’s rich history in space exploration dating back to McDonnell Aircraft Corporation’s involvement in the Mercury and Gemini missions, which sent the first Americans into space. Today, St. Louis is a key hub for NASA’s planetary exploration mission through the work of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis’ Earth and Planetary Remote Sensing Laboratory (EPRSL). Directed by Dr. Ray Arvidson, EPRSL is involved with the planning and programming of both the Curiosity and Opportunity rovers currently exploring Mars. Dr. Arvidson served as a scientific advisor for the development of the exhibit. “Washington University in Saint Louis has had a long and deep involvement with NASA in robotic exploration of the solar system through our McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences. I look forward to sharing, through the new Saint Louis Science Center and its new exhibits, some of the excitement associated with exploring Mars, a planet whose rocks reveal unequivocal evidence for past warm, wet conditions, with rivers and lakes in abundance.” Mission: Mars is free to all visitors. There will be paid, educational programs offered to groups in both exhibit locations. For more information, please visit slsc.org.

"The 33"
Movies are forever trying to capture the essence of the human spirit, and by that measure, it's hard to imagine there was ever a story more tailor-made for the movies than the incredible 2010 Chilean mine rescue. If the details are hazy in your mind, just go to YouTube right now and watch the first miner reach the surface in that tiny capsule they built. We dare you not to cry. And that's actually part of the problem with "The 33," directed by Patricia Riggen. The real-life saga was so visceral — and so visual, unfolding as it did on live TV — that it's tough to beat the memory. You could say that such a movie writes itself, but that's not true — a cinematic portrayal of an event so recent needs to do something creative to move things forward, present a new angle, offer a different perspective. "The 33" is well-meaning, well-crafted and faithful to the source material, but ultimately it feels disappointingly formulaic. We begin with a happy scene, a festive retirement party. There, we meet many of the men, including Mario Sepulveda (Antonio Banderas), the most charismatic of the bunch; he asks supervisor Don Lucho (Lou Diamond Phillips) if he can work the next day, though it's his day off. In the village, we also quickly meet Dario Segovia (Juan Pablo Raba), a troubled miner with an addiction problem, and the caring older sister he neglects, the empanada-seller Maria (Juliette Binoche, in an underdrawn role that never quite seems to fit). Alas, these hasty interchanges don't give much meaningful insight into the characters (indeed, the script's thin characterizations are the weak link of the film.) The next day, the men arrive at the mouth of the mine. "Is this the only way in?" asks newcomer Carlos. "The only way in, and the only way out," replies Banderas' Mario, doing the most with a line that's a little too obvious. And then the mine collapses, with frightening violence. Now we have, essentially, two dramas unfolding: Above ground, where the desperate families have set up camp, and below, where 33 men are trapped 2,300 feet down in searing heat. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a disaster sequence and some language." RUNNING TIME: 127 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.
"The Night Before"
Boosted by its stellar cast and playful take on "A Christmas Carol," ''The Night Before" is a coming-of-age stoner-buddy comedy laced with warm holiday cheer. Make no mistake: it's still a silly romp thick with dope smoke and dumb jokes, but the performances are solid, and there's some surprising sentiment behind the wacky antics. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie play best friends bidding farewell to their 10-year tradition of partying together on Christmas Eve. Ethan (GordonLevitt) is determined to make their last night epic, especially since Chris (Mackie) is on a hot streak in his football career and Isaac (Rogen) is expecting a baby. Isaac's wife, Betsy (the hilarious and soon-to-be everywhere Jillian Bell), gives her husband a special gift in honor of his last Christmas Eve with his pals: a box filled with "every single drug in the whole world." Well, you can imagine how things go from there. Isaac dips into the stash as soon as they leave the house. Rogen is predictably over the top as he samples each substance, falling deeper and deeper into a delusional haze. This presents ample opportunity for gross-out moments, like when he barfs in church or lets his nose bleed into a woman's martini. Meanwhile, Ethan surprises his friends with tickets to the

hottest party in town, the one they've dreamed of getting into since their holiday tradition began. But first, Chris needs to pick up some weed. (Somehow, Betsy left that out of the box.) This sets the trio on their adventure, bringing them in contact with the mysterious Mr. Green (a brilliant Michael Shannon) for the first of several meetings. He introduces Chris to "the weed of Christmas present." Later in the film, the weed of Christmas past and future is smoked. (Poor Dickens.) A l o n g t h e w a y, t h e g u y s m e e t u p w i t h E t h a n ' s ex-girlfriend (Lizzy Caplan) and her friend (Mindy Kaling), Chris' mom (Lorraine Toussaint), and Rebecca Grinch (Ilana Glazer). Each of these actresses' appearances is a little holiday treat that helps balance the dumb-guy debauchery. Miley Cyrus, James Franco and Tracy Morgan also make welcome, well-played cameos. Isaac maintains a steady level of wasted-ness throughout the film as he frets about fatherhood. Rogen channels this with ease, and with considerably more maturity than in 2007's "Knocked Up." RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "drug use and language throughout, some strong sexual content and graphic nudity." RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.
"Carol"
"Carol" is an overwhelmingly beautiful film. It looks like a dream, it sounds like whispered want, and it feels like falling in love in all its stomach turning terror and ecstasy. Even its title rolls elegantly off the tongue. In "Carol," director Todd Haynes, his filmmaking team and his formidable leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara have birthed that rare, precious creation where the substance, the story and the emotions all stand on equal footing to the film's loveliness — easily making it one of the year's best. The story, adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel "The Price of Salt," is both straightforward and deeply complex. It's about two lost souls at very different ages and stations finding each other by chance and altering the course of the other's life. It's just a glance — longing at first sight — across a crowded Christmastime department store when Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a gawky shop girl in a tattered Santa hat spots Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), dripping in tasteful furs and corals and regal confidence. Carol sees Therese too, and they hold each other's gaze for a wistful moment. But their mutual, immediate attraction isn't that simple. It's New York City in the early 1950s and same sex relationships are, at the very least, not a widely accepted public affair. There's more at stake than just the possible heartbreak of any passionate relationship in this setting. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
"Youth"
Superheroes and franchise blockbusters may dominate the multiplex, but Paolo Sorrentino's "Youth" is a reminder of the touching, unexpected and unusual places movies can go. Original and unpredictable, "Youth" trusts its audience's curiosity and powers of perception. Sorrentino doesn't overexplain his story or characters — they simply stand as written, awaiting discovery. "Youth" is almost the antithesis of the Hollywood blockbuster, and not just because of its non-linear

narrative. Despite its title, the film centers on a relationship between two octogenarians, and presents people of all ages, sizes and appearances as worthy of interest and love. The film's idyllic setting is a vintage health spa in the Swiss Alps that offers nightly live entertainment and daily nude hot-pool soaks amid breathtaking mountain landscapes. Retired composer Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) is there for his annual retreat, accompanied by his daughter, Lena (Rachel Weisz). Fred's lifelong friend, Hollywood filmmaker Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), is there, too. Also staying at the resort is famous American actor Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano), who is preparing for his next role. He befriends the older men as they check out their fellow guests, including an obese retired soccer player, an elegantly dressed couple who never speak, a teenage masseuse with braces, a meditating monk, a pudgy young prostitute, and Miss Universe. Lena is worried about Fred, who has just declined an invitation from the Queen of England to conduct his most beloved composition at a concert for Prince Philip. Fred insists he's retired and done with life; Lena says he's apathetic. But when no one is watching, Fred imagines himself conducting the sounds he hears in nature. He talks about life and age and memories with Mick, who's otherwise focused on his latest screenplay, which he calls his "testament." He brought a group of young screenwriters with him to help brainstorm the film's ending. Jimmy, meanwhile, spends most of his time observing everyone else. The men connect over questions of creativity: Fred and Mick struggle with the idea of legacy and continuing self-expression into old age; Jimmy wonders about the best use of his creative skills and what makes them meaningful. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "graphic nudity, some sexuality and language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.
"The Danish Girl"
Most people probably don't know the name Lili Elbe. This reviewer didn't. But Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl" will make sure you won't soon forget the transgender icon, even if this well-intentioned, extravagant movie leaves you with more questions than revelations. Almost a century before Caitlyn Jenner graced the cover of Vanity Fair, Lili Elbe (born Einar Wegener) became one of the first transgender women to undergo documented sex reassignment surgery. Eddie Redmayne, who adroitly disappeared into the character Stephen Hawking for "The Theory of Everything," has taken on the task of another transformation to portray Einar/Lili throughout her discovery and transition. He uses his androgynous frame, delicate features, and refined beauty to full effect in representing the physical realization of Lili. The timing of this film, based on the book by David Ebershoff, couldn't be more perfect and yet it also feels far too late. That's not the fault of the filmmakers here, but more a result of constantly shifting culture. This is all to say that the film has an almost impossible standard to live up to, especially now — both in doing justice to Lili's life as well as to the audience who may only learn about her through what they see on screen. In some ways it succeeds beautifully. Ideas swirl readily and boldly, especially considering the time in which it's taking place. This is not a shy movie. In fact, it's refreshingly sexual, alive and empathetic, at least at the start. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for some sexuality and full nudity. RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Redmayne shines in"The Danish Girl" By LINDSEY BAHR Associated Press Most people probably don't know the name Lili Elbe. This reviewer didn't. In some ways it succeeds beautifully. Ideas swirl readily and boldly, especially considering the time in which it's taking place. This is not a
shy movie. In fact, it's refreshingly sexual, alive and empathetic, at least at the start. In other ways, it comes up lacking. Its respect for beauty and dramatic narrative stays surface level and almost detached. You walk away barely knowing Lili at all. Perhaps that's because "The Danish Girl" feels like two separate films — a playful, adventurous beginning is followed by morose melodrama. At least it's energetic and full of life when we first meet Einar and his stunning wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) in the mid-1920s in Copenhagen. They're both painters of some renown, him more than her at the moment. He paints landscapes. She paints portraits. And they live a playful, happy, intimate life as friends and partners in this quickly modernizing society.
One day, Gerda's subject is late for her portraiture and she has Einar sub in as the model. Einar slips on a pair of stockings and ornate slippers and cradles the gown, breathing rapidly as though feeling pleasure for the first time. From there it becomes a bit of a game for Gerda and Einar, until Einar realizes (or finally acknowledges) that it's not just dress up and that Lili is her true self. But as Lili becomes more herself, she also becomes less of an emotionally available partner to Gerda (despite being Gerda's professional muse). This is where the story takes a turn for the worse. The film is about Lili, yes, but it doesn't seem interested in the loneliness and poignancy of what she is going through. She almost slips into the background.
"Youth" a captivating portrait of aging By SANDY COHEN Associated Press S u p e rh e ro e s a n d f r a n c h i s e blockbusters may dominate the multiplex, but Paolo Sorrentino's "Youth" is a reminder of the touching, unexpected and unusual places movies can go. The pudgy young prostitute is sad and confused. The meditating monk wants to levitate. Every performance from the outstanding ensemble cast rings true. Even the supporting players and silent performers are superb. The music itself is a character, from Fred's original compositions to the songs by the eclectic entertainers who appear at the hotel. Sorrentino tapped Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang to create Fred's music and the film's score

(his first), and crafted a varied soundtrack with such artists as Mark Kozelek, David Byrne and Grammywinning Korean soprano Sumi Jo. "Youth" might have alternately been called "Us" for its loving perspective on people — how peculiar we can be and how comforting it is to recognize that in one another. It's about how we relate to each other broadly through art and intimately through words and actions. More than anything, it's a loving portrait of friendship, one that Sorrentino dedicates to his friend and mentor Francisco Rosi, the Italian director who died in January. With its artful soundtrack, excellent performances and big questions about life, fear and creativity, the musical and narrative themes of "Youth" play on long after the film ends.

The Arts
For The Edge
A scene from "A Christmas Story – The Musical," which runs through Jan. 3 at Aurora's Paramount Theatre.
"You'll shoot your eye out, kid" Aurora's Paramount Theatre to present "A Christmas Story – The Musical" For The Edge Families, set your holiday entertainment dials for excitement, because Chicago musical theater powerhouse, the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, is turning one of the most iconic holiday movies ever made into a largerthan-life musical blockbuster, November 25-January 3. Director Nick Bowling will make his Paramount debut with A Christmas Story - The Musical, everyone's favorite holiday comedy about little Ralphie and his quest for a Red Ryder BB gun. Bowling has bubbled to the top of Chicago's musical theater scene with his recent string of hits including Porchlight's Sondheim on Sondheim ("4 stars" - Chicago Tribune), City of Angels and The King and I at Marriott and The History Boys at TimeLineTheatre, where he is Associate Artistic Director. Today, Paramount Artistic Director Jim Corti announced the cast and production team for A Christmas Story on his blog, Tuesday's with Corti. "Paramount's production stars Michael Harp as little Ralphie with his parents played by Danni Smith as his Mother, Michael Accardo as The Old Man and Philip Earl Johnson as the narrator, Jean. Of this cast of 31, 21 actors are making their Paramount debut directed by Nick Bowling, choreographed by Rhett Guter with musical director Tom Vendafreddo conducting the 17-member Paramount Orchestra playing the full, original Broadway orchestrations. This is an exceptional team of artists, designers and technicians. I am stoked!" Thirteen-year-old Michael Harp recently played Billy's pal Michael in Billy Elliot at Drury Lane Oakbrook and Kurt in Lyric Opera of Chicago's The Sound of Music. Danni Smith is a four-time Jeff Award winner, with recent credits including City of Angels at Marriott and Jesus Christ Superstar and Always Patsy Cline at Theo Ubique. Michael Accardo most recently played Nathan Bloom in Drury Lane's Beaches and
14
performed in The Full Monty at Drury Lane Water Tower. Philip Earl Johnson was recently seen in Writers Theatre's Dance of Death and Old Glory and played Joe Pitt in the national tour of Angels in America, Parts I and II. Brimming with dynamite performances and overflowing with comedy and heart, A Christmas Story - The Musical is the adaptation of the 1983 indie cult film which became a Broadway musical spectacular in 2012. Who doesn't love nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, a typical boy growing up in 1940s Indiana? With Christmas right around the corner, Ralphie has his bespectacled sights set on one thing - a Red Ryder BB Gun. But at every turn, the young daydreamer hears those five words that are the bane of his existence: "You'll shoot your eye out." The music is energetic, unforgettable and ranges from gentle ballads to full-on, showstopping numbers. The imagery takes audiences back to an easier time we often long for, but the message remains the same: family, friendship, love - the holidays are nothing without them. Bring your family and celebrate the holidays with this beloved story of a department store Santa, a Leg Lamp, a snow suit and friends that will never leave your side - even if your tongue is stuck to a flag pole. Regular performances continue through January 3. Show times are Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $41 to $56. The Paramount Theatre is located at 23 E. Galena Blvd., in the heart of downtown Aurora. For tickets and information, go to ParamountAurora. com call (630) 896-6666 or visit the Paramount box office Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and two hours prior to evening performances. A Christmas Story - The Musical is rated PG. A Christmas Story - The Musical, based on the movie A Christmas Story and Jean Shepherd's novel In God We Trust: All

Others Pay Cash, features a book by Joseph Robinette, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. After engagements at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre and the Chicago Theatre, A Christmas Story arrived on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in the fall of 2012. It opened to overwhelming critical acclaim, broke box office records and went on to receive three 2013 Tony Award® nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score, along with six Drama Desk nominations and two Outer Critics Circle nominations. Paramount's production of A Christmas Story - The Musical also stars Ericka Mac as Miss Shields and 12 more of Chicago's top youth actors as Ralphie's friends, enemies and schoolmates: Blake Barnickel (Flick), Cody Bolithon (Sammy), Grier Burke (Suzy), Nick Dantes (Schwartz), Michael Di Leo (Roy), Samantha Marie Erne (Esther Jane), Ricky Falbo (Grover Dill), Eloise Lushina (Mary Beth), Tyler Martin (Scooter), Theo Moss (Randy), Peyton Shaffer (Nancy) and Reid Patrick Tomasson (Scut Farkus). Ensemble members are Aubrey Adams, Audrey Billings, Jonathan Butler-Duplessis, Aaron Choi, Jason Grimm, Jillian Jocson, Mark David Kaplan, Matthew Keffer, Alanna Lovely, Erin McGrath, Jason Richards, Summer Smart, Holly Stauder and Dana Tretta. Per usual, Paramount has tapped only the highest caliber talent in every aspect of production. In keeping with Paramount tradition, the 17-member Paramount Orchestra will play the full, original Broadway orchestrations for A Christmas Story, led by Music Director and Conductor Tom Vendafreddo, helming the orchestra for his fourth consecutive Paramount musical. For tickets and information, go to ParamountAurora.com or call (630) 896-6666. The Paramount Theatre (ParamountAurora. com) is the center for performing arts, entertainment and arts education in Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois. Named "One of Chicago's Top 10 Attended Theatres" by the
League of Chicago Theatres, the 1,888-seat Paramount, located in downtown Aurora at 23 E. Galena Blvd., is nationally renowned for the quality and caliber of its presentations, superb acoustics and historic beauty. The Paramount opened on September 3, 1931. Designed by renowned theater architects C.W. and George L. Rapp, the theater captures a unique Venetian setting portrayed in the art deco influence of the 1930s. The first airconditioned building outside of Chicago, the Paramount offered the public a variety of entertainment, including "talking pictures," vaudeville, concerts and circus performances for more than 40 years. In 1976, Aurora Civic Center Authority purchased the Paramount and closed the theater for restoration. The $1.5 million project restored the Paramount to its original grandeur. On April 29, 1978, the Paramount Arts Center opened, offering a variety of theatrical, musical, comedy, dance and family programming. In 2006, a 12,000-square-foot, two-story Grand Gallery lobby was added, with a new, state-of-the-art box office, café and art gallery. Today, the Paramount self-produces its own Broadway Musical Series, presents an eclectic array of comedy, music, dance and family shows, and on most Mondays, screens a classic movie. The Paramount Theatre is one of three live performance venues programmed and managed by the Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA). ACCA also oversees the Paramount's "sister" stage, the intimate, 173seat Copley Theatre located directly across the street from the Paramount at 8 E. Galena Blvd., as well as RiverEdge Park, downtown Aurora's summer outdoor concert venue. The Paramount Theatre continues to expand its artistic and institutional boundaries under the guidance of Tim Rater, President and CEO, Aurora Civic Center Authority; Jim Corti, Artistic Director, Paramount Theatre; a dedicated Board of Trustees and a devoted staff of live theater and music professionals. For tickets and information, go to ParamountAurora.com or call (630) 896-6666.

Hailed by critics and fans alike as the ‘Guitar Event Of The Year,’ the multi-artist celebration known as the Experience H e n d r i x To u r i s s e t t o re t u r n in 2016. These special concert performances present legendary artists who join together to pay homage to Jimi Hendrix. This next edition of the Experience H e n d r i x To u r w i l l e n c o m p a s s twenty seven performances this coming February and March, stopping in more than two dozen cities along the east coast, midwest and southern states. Now in its second decade, the tour celebrates the musical genius of Jimi Hendrix by bringing together a diverse array of extraordinary musicians, ranging from blues legend Buddy Guy to Black Label Society and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, as well as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa and many others. Billy Cox, bassist for both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys, anchors a rh y t h m s e c t i o n t h a t p ro v i d e s the foundation for exciting renditions of such signature Hendrix favorites as “Purple H a z e ” a n d “ Vo o d o o C h i l d (Slight Return)”. expanded the possibilities of what could be achieved with the electric guitar, forever altering t h e c o u r s e o f m u s i c h i s t o r y. Likewise, the Experience Hendrix Tour is developing a rich history of its own. By 2004, the first Experience Hendrix Tour came t o f r u i t i o n w i t h a t h re e - d a t e string of shows on the west coast, starting in Hendrix’s hometown of Seattle. By 2008, the Experience Hendrix Tour had become a full-fledged, coast-tocoast expedition that continues to date, without showing any signs of slowing down Audiences are presented the opportunity to see great artists paying homage to Hendrix and collaborating with each other in ways they’d never do in their own live shows. “It is such an honor to be asked back for another run,” says blues/ gospel/rock guitar prodigy Jonny Lang, who has played every tour since 2008. “The music of Jimi Hendrix speaks to each of us in indelible ways. It’s another chance to celebrate his legacy.” Multiple Grammy-winner and 2015 Kennedy Center honoree Buddy Guy, who was both an inspiration to as well as a personal friend of Jimi’s, is also ecstatic to partake in his sixth Experience Hendrix Tour. The stance he takes is akin to that of a missionary: “Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest guitar players ever and we all need to keep his music alive.” "It's an honor to celebrate Jimi Hendrix's legacy and greatness with so many other amazing players, who have become great friends and family to me,” echoes Zakk Wylde. “His influence and inspiration will forever be undeniable!" Platinum-selling solo artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been on every Experience Hendrix Tour since the beginning. “As
far back as I can remember, I’ve been listening to Jimi Hendrix,” said Shepherd. “He has had an enormous influence on me as both a guitar player and
a s o n g w r i t e r. H e w a s a l w a y s trying new things and pushing musical boundaries, which enabled and encouraged me to push the boundaries in my
music. The Experience Hendrix Tour is an amazing tribute to the greatest guitar player of all time, featuring some of the greatest musicians in the world today.”

Religion Religion briefs U.S. Catholic bishops: Abortion, marriage key election issues
vote as a bloc.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is issuing an election-year guide stressing a moral imperative to evaluate candidates according to their positions on marriage and abortion. The bishops overwhelmingly voted for the guide called "Faithful Citizenship" at their national assembly Tuesday in Baltimore. The guide addresses a broad range of issues, including protecting immigrants and the environment, fighting racism and poverty, and opposing the death penalty. However, the bishops said they consider opposition to gay marriage and abortion paramount in this presidential election season and beyond. They said voting for a candidate specifically because the politician favors a "grave evil" such as abortion rights amounts to "formal cooperation" with that evil by the voter. About one-quarter of U.S. voters are Catholic, but they don't

Kasich calls for agency promoting "Judeo-Christian" values
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John Kasich says he'd set up an agency with a "mandate" to promote what he calls "Judeo-Christian values" overseas to counter Islamist propaganda. The Ohio governor says he would create the new agency to promote the values of human rights, democracy and the freedoms of speech, religion and association. Kasich says the information would be distributed in the Middle East, China, Iran and Russia, to compete with the propaganda and misinformation purveyed by Islamic militants. He made the comments Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington, as part of a speech on national security. Kasich says the U.S. is "failing to advance our values in the battle of ideas" in the face of advances by the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jackie Biskupski says her election as the first openly gay mayor of Salt Lake City is historic but she wants to focus her efforts on voters and city workers. Biskupski briefly acknowledged the milestone after her victory was announced Tuesday but said she wants to be a force of change for many people in the city. Biskupski plans to meet soon with leaders of the Utah-based Mormon church to discuss a host of issues, including a new policy that bans baptisms for children of gay parents until the kids turn 18 and disavow same-sex relationships. Biskupski has said she hopes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reconsiders the policy. She says her upcoming meeting with faith leaders is important because the church is a major employer and presence in the city.

For The Edge
Above, Santa and Mrs. Claus prepare for Santa's Safari at the Louisville Zoo. Below, a display at the Galt House.
Christmas in Louisville For The Edge There’s a new event making its debut this year to Louisville’s lineup of festive holiday offerings. In an effort to market the city as an authentic year-end destination, Louisville is expanding its seasonal traditions, which includes the inaugural Holiday in the City event. This month-long celebration will transform the plaza at Fourth and Jefferson streets into a Holiday Square featuring an ice-skating rink, Bourbon and beer village and a world market. The Holiday Square will also serve as the home for the city’s official holiday tree.
It kicks off on Nov. 27 during Light Up Louisville, the city’s traditional starting point for the holiday season. Holiday in the City runs through Dec. 23 (the ice-skating rink is open through Jan. 30). Light Up Louisville has served as the city’s annual day-afterThanksgiving tradition for more than three decades. Highlights of the 2015 celebration include the Run Run Rudolph 5K Run/Walk at 4 p.m., the Lots of Lights Parade at 6:30 p.m. and the arrival of Santa Claus, who will help illuminate downtown Louisville at 8 p.m. The festivities are capped off with a fireworks show.
Stop by the Louisville Visitors Center (Fourth and Jefferson streets) during Light Up Louisville for discounts, giveaways, activities, gifts with purchase and more. It will be open special hours from 4 to 10 p.m. The Louisville Visitors Center will also offer special discounts on Louisville-themed merchandise the first three Fridays in December. Here are a handful of other holiday happenings in Louisville: Christmas at the Galt House Hotel returns for its sixth year and transforms Louisville’s only hotel overlooking the Ohio River into its very own North Pole. Highlights include: KaLightoscope:
A Christmas Carol (130 handcrafted luminaries will illustrate the classic Charles Dickens’ holiday tale in a walkable journey), performances by country superstar Pam Tillis during the Pam Tillis & Friends: A Kentucky Christmas Dinner Show, an English village, the Peppermint Express Kiddie Train, dancing bellmen, shopping and more. It’s underway now through Dec. 27. Watch holiday performances including: “A Christmas Carol” at Actors Theatre of Louisville; “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” “Jack Frost Saves Christmas” and “Honky Tonk Holidays” at Derby Dinner Playhouse; and the

Set sail on a holiday cruise along the Ohio River aboard the Belle of Louisville and Sprit of Jefferson. Visit the Louisville Zoo for Santa’s Safari, where Santa, Mrs. Claus and Frosty the Snowman are making a special trip from the North Pole. Santa’s Workshop, holiday crafts, treats, refreshments, holiday sing-alongs, photos with Santa and more are all part of the merriment.
