For The Edge

Mr. Potato Head – and family – and the BIg Wheel are just some of the iconic toys on display at the Missouri History Museum.

Museum explores the heyday of toys For The Edge Toys of the '50s, '60s and '70s is a nationally traveling exhibit developed by the Minnesota History Center that captures the craziness, joy and sheer fun of being a kid. Toys of the '50s, '60s and '70s will be on view at the Missouri History Museum through Jan. 22, 2017. "The toys we play with are very much the products of their times," said Kate Roberts, exhibit developer. "By pulling together toys as diverse as Barbie, Hot Wheels, Spirographs and Pet Rocks, we hope to spark memories for visitors, but also to get them talking about how toys reflect the rhythms of American life." At the core of the exhibit are reflections on the significance and silliness of childhood passions, taken from published sources and firsthand personal accounts. Learn about the man who invented Cootie and where he took inspiration for his "bug"; hear from brothers who wished for Star Wars toys but because of the popularity of the movie got an "I.O.U." instead; and read a memory from a woman raised in a predominantly white suburb whose parents bought her a Julia doll because it "offered at least a hint that the world is a diverse place." Visitors can explore hundreds of toys along with multimedia presentations and a trivia game hosted by The Brady Bunch’s Maureen McCormick. Around every corner, visitors can find a play zone where they can immerse themselves in hands-on play. Admission to Toys of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s is free. ‘ Information about programming related to Toys is available at mohistory.org here.

Julia Biggs/The Edge

Mike Zanger, left, and Zach Miller, the owners and operators of Taqueria Z in downtown Edwardsville.

Taqueria Z focuses on Mexican street food By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge An interesting friendship formed between Edwardsville residents Zach Miller and Mike Zanger when the two met through their interest in acoustic music. Their friendship quickly evolved into opening a business together. The result is Taqueria Z, a new restaurant in Edwardsville that offers quick and simple Mexican street food. Zach explained that he first met Mike a few years ago when he attended acoustic concerts at Mike and Megan Zanger’s home. “He does house concerts outside of town at his house. I went to those and we became friends,” Zach recalled. “We started cooking together and serving tacos at his house parties, and we decided to actually make a business out of it.” “Mike’s always cooked,” Zach added. “He has the Mexican background. He’s lived in Mexico and Brazil.” Mike pointed out that he had lived for about two years in central Mexico. “I cooked Mexican food there and here. I have a lot of Mexican friends and family. A lot of them have moved here to the states. So I continue to collaborate with them on recipes,” Mike noted. Mike elaborated about the timing of opening Taqueria Z, explaining that he survived a recent health scare which prompted him to finally take action on his dream of owning a taqueria. “I had been talking about it for at least three years, but it was more of a pipe dream,” he recalled. “I went through a health scare with cancer. Had a liver transplant about five months ago. Kind of a rebirth.” “So it kind of triggered sort of a mid-life crisis I would

say,” Mike said with a chuckle. “And this is it. I didn’t buy a Corvette.” Zach added that Mike was “kind of the expert” and that he was “there to help.” “I have more of a business background so I thought together we could make it happen,” Zach said. And with the help of Mike’s wife, Megan, the trio opened Taqueria Z earlier this month. The menu includes “starters” of rice and beans, chorizo and cheese dip, which is spicy chorizo with melted chihuahua cheese, and chips and then Rooster Beak, a chunky guacamole that the menu notes is “like nothing you have had before.” Mike helped to explain the odd name of this starter by pointing out that Pico means rooster in Spanish. “And Pico de gallo in Spanish is a mixture of tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and we add avocado and lime juice and that becomes Rooster Beak,” he said. Tacos, chacos and burritos round out the entrees. “Chaco is a variation of a taco,” Mike noted. “It’s a taco with crispy cheese grilled on it. We flip it over on the griddle and toast the cheese on the griddle.” The three entrees come with meat choices of Al Pastor (marinated pork), Carne Asada (Marinated skirt steak), Chorizo or Pollo (chicken). Vegetarian options include mushrooms, nopalitos, and poblano y papas. And of course there is chips and homemade salsa. The salsa comes in three varieties – a green salsa, a milder version of the green salsa and then a spicy orange salsa. Taqueria Z has six taps for draft beers. “We also have a collaboration beer with Recess Brewery. A

Mexican brown ale,” Zach pointed out. In addition, Taqueria Z offers a variety of tequilas. “We have an original margarita that’s nothing but tequila, cointreau and lime juice. Very simple but very good,” Mike said. There’s no other alcohol available. “No other alcohol here,” Zach added. “No rum, no gin, no vodka.” They also offer non-alcoholic drinks of Mexican sodas, bottled sodas (both local and Mexican) and an assortment of teas, and they will be serving Goshen coffee. Zach also pointed out that everything that goes out of the restaurant will be compostable. “Everything from our trash bags to utensils even the food itself will be composted,” he stressed. “Really the only thing that will be thrown away will be the packaging that stuff arrives in. Everything going out otherwise is biodegradable.” “And the to-go containers are biodegradable,” Mike added. “Megan is getting us certified as a green restaurant.” Taqueria Z is located at 109 East Park St. which is one-half a block off of Main Street in downtown Edwardsville. There’s seating available inside the restaurant for about 25 people and another 20 seats are available on the patio. Initially Taqueria Z plans to be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “Tuesday is No Taco Tuesday. We’re closed on Tuesdays,” Mike said. Taqueria Z is on Facebook or visit the restaurant’s website at www.taqueriaz.com. The phone number is 618-307-5018.

QuickGlance Movie Reviews

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"

Xenophobia. Prejudice. Oppression. Who's up for a little escapism at the multiplex? J.K. Rowling, embarking on her new, post-Potter blockbuster franchise with "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," has said herself that her screenplay, which she began several years ago, was informed by world events — particularly, she noted, a rise in populism around the globe. And so there's definitely some darkness in "Fantastic Beasts," despite its being a family film, complete with the sweetest little beasts (and bigger ones) imaginable — expect to see your kid melt forthwith over the lovable jewelryimbibing Niffler (It's stunning how many carats he can consume without gaining weight.) But there's also a refreshingly light tone competing with the sinister themes, thanks especially to two exceedingly appealing supporting characters headed for a sweet confection of a romance. But first, the title: Harry Potter fans will know that "Fantastic Beasts" was a required text for Harry and his Hogwarts mates. That little book has now become the seed of a franchise — there are FOUR films to come — based on its author, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a wizard Magizoologist with a mop haircut, a bashful grin, and one fabulous briefcase. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some fantasy action violence." RUNNING TIME: 133 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Manchester by the Sea"

It's hard to overstate the magnificence of Kenneth Lonergan's "Manchester by the Sea ." His third feature following "You Can Count on Me" and "Margaret" is one that swells with the spectrum of human emotion. Humor, anger, cynicism and love all crash into one another to create an elegant composition of image and sound that is filmmaking and storytelling at its best. It's centered on Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck), who we meet as a quiet custodian in Boston. He fixes clogged toilets and leaking showers for the tenants and shovels and salts the same walkway day after day with mechanical resolve. He is docile but stubborn and seems to have a deep disinterest in people. He is alone, but not lonely and at night, he drinks and drinks and drinks. There is rage festering under the surface for reasons unclear. All we have are carefully chosen glimpses of the past, when Lee surrounded himself with family and had spirit and life, but we don't know what happened to turn him into this shell. Then his brother Joe (Kyle Chandler) suddenly dies and he must return to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew, Patrick (Lucas Hedges), a hot-headed but sensitive kid ill-equipped to deal with this tragedy. Lee's ghosts make the picturesque Manchester a cold and hellish landscape. Everything is a reminder of why he had to leave in the first place and the nerve is still exposed. At least in Boston, he didn't have to see people who knew. He just had to deal with himself. There is no easy way to continue talking about the plot without mucking up the impact of the structure. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout and some sexual content." RUNNING TIME: 137 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

On the Edge of the Weekend

"Rules Don't Apply"

Warren Beatty doesn't want us to regard "Rules Don't Apply," in which he stars as Howard Hughes, as a Howard Hughes film. It's actually a movie about late '50s Hollywood, he says, and the sexual puritanism of the era. Indeed, Beatty doesn't appear for a long while in this muchawaited film, which he co-wrote, directed and starred in — perhaps partly to prove his point that he's not the main attraction. But come on — it's Warren Beatty, a legend who hasn't made a film for 15 years, playing America's most famous eccentric, controversial billionaire until ... well, until you know who. Of COURSE it's a Howard Hughes movie. And that's not a bad thing, because whatever you think of the new film, Beatty at 79 retains much of that youthful charisma — he may have wrinkles, but the features are still boyish — that's made him a Hollywood fixture for more than a half-century, from "Splendor in the Grass" to "Bonnie and Clyde" to "Shampoo" to "Heaven Can Wait" to "Reds." As for "Rules Don't Apply," it's many years — decades, actually — in the making, brings together a who's who list of on-and-offscreen talent, looks gorgeous — and still feels strangely uneven and tonally confusing. But if you can get over that, it's undeniably entertaining and at times, even quirkily mesmerizing. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America "for sexual material including brief strong language, thematic elements, and drug references." RUNNING TIME: 126 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Allied"

Deeply nostalgic moviemaking is rendered with digital precision in Robert Zemeckis' highly manicured World War II romance "Allied." Zemeckis' control of his camera is absolute, if selfconsciously so. In "Allied," with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, he has resurrected the espionage thriller in all its classical glamour with a knowingness that's both impressively grand and stiffly hollow. The crisp period images of "Allied" never feel far removed from their storyboards. "Allied," despite its high-wattage stars, feels a bit like an R-rated "Tintin." For Zemeckis, the director of "Back to the Future" and "Cast Away," the distance between animation and live-action is little to none, and beside the point, anyway. He has lately, with "The Walk," ''Flight" and now "Allied," been on a laudable mission to re-empower the big-screen drama with well-crafted, special effects-assisted spectacles that project human-sized stories onto widescreen canvases. "Allied," big and sturdy, always fills the screen. But its gleaming surfaces are missing something underneath. The film begins with a lone parachutist drifting as softly as a leaf onto the Moroccan desert in 1942. He is Max Vatan (Pitt), a Canadian spy working for the British, so handsomely outfitted that he could have fallen not from the sky but out of another firmament: "Lawrence of Arabia." He's promptly picked up by his contact and handed a case full of guns, a wad of cash and — most lethal of all — a wedding ring. He rendezvous with a French agent in Casablanca, a location chosen as if to summon the spirits of old-fashioned cinema. From his first encounter in a nightclub with Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard), they are already in their roles. While secretly plotting to assassinate a Nazi official, they pose as a married couple. Under Marianne's guidance, they go to great lengths to put up appearances. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "violence, some sexuality/nudity, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

"Miss Sloane"

There's never a hair out of place in "Miss Sloane ," a painstakingly slick political thriller from director John Madden about a brilliant lone wolf lobbyist consumed with the win. It's a wannabe Aaron Sorkin-meets-Shonda Rhimes glimpse into the hollow and cynical world of inside the beltway dealings from first-time screenwriter Jonathan Perera that's never quite snappy, insightful or salacious enough to be as fun or damning as it should be. All the pieces are there, especially in the film's subject — the steely Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain), a pill-popping master manipulator who is always at the ready with a perfect quip, biblical verse or history lesson for the moment. She's the kind of do-it-all wonder woman who is just as comfortable working a room of scuzzy Washington insiders or pleading the fifth at an intimidating congressional hearing as she is directing a team of spooks to illegally surveil someone with a camera-equipped cockroach. Elizabeth Slone's mantra is that lobbying is all about foresight and making sure you play your trump card after the other guys play theirs. Our first glimpse of her in action shows her willfully neglecting Senate ethics rules by arranging some luxury travel for a congressman and his family to try to sway him on a palm oil tax initiative. She's a mercenary who is out for the win at all costs, and she's the best at it. But she also has principles, and leaves her top firm for the opposition when a powerful gun group asks her to devise messaging to turn women against universal background checks for gun ownership. Her cavalier dismissal of a massive new client for her firm enrages her boss, a scenery chewing Sam Waterston, and makes the audience a little more intrigued about why this woman does what she does. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some sexuality." Running time: 132 minutes. ASSCOATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

"Jackie"

History, lately run amok, is ordered with such tidy, forceful finesse by Natalie Portman's Jacqueline Kennedy in in the piercing "Jackie." Summoning a journalist to Hyannis Port in 1963, not long after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, she coolly sets the record for her late husband's legacy, coining "Camelot" and shaping the mythology. Some details that don't fit the narrative she simply crosses out. "I don't smoke," she tells the Life magazine reporter (Billy Crudup), with a cigarette dangling between her fingers. Pablo Larrain's "Jackie," a work of probing intimacy and shattered stereotype, is an electrifyingly fractured portrait of the former First Lady. Gone is the image of the wan, serene Jackie. Here, instead, is a savvy public-relations operator, a steely widow in grief and a woman redefining herself amid tragedy. "I'm his wi--" she begins saying after Dallas. "Whatever I am now." The more complicated view of the mysterious Kennedy is inspired partly by the revelatory private interviews conducted by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. and released in 2011. She was not purely her pillbox-wearing public image, not merely a totem of grace, the candid tapes revealed. Throughout "Jackie," we feel her discomfort at playing a starring role in an American fairy tale turned nightmare. The disharmony, sounded by Mica Levi's knotted, gloomy score, is always there between persona and person. "We're the beautiful people, right?" she sarcastically quips. Exiting Air Force One, she deadpans to her husband (Caspar Phillipson), "I love crowds." In Larrain's hands, Kennedy's pained public performance is a kind of sacrifice. "Jackie" is at once a deconstruction of the Jackie Kennedy fable and a dramatization of its making. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "brief strong violence and some language." RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

Associated Press

This image released by Europa shows Alison Pill, left, and Jessica Chastain in a scene from, "Miss Sloane."

Chastain enlivens "Miss Sloane" By LINDSEY BAHR Associated Press There's never a hair out of place in "Miss Sloane ," a painstakingly slick political thriller from director John Madden about a brilliant lone wolf lobbyist consumed with the win.

But she also has principles, and leaves her top firm for the opposition when a powerful gun group asks her to devise messaging to

turn women against universal background checks for gun ownership. Her cavalier dismissal of a massive new client for her firm enrages her boss, a scenery chewing Sam Waterston, and makes the audience a little more intrigued about why this woman does what she does. Now fighting for the underdogs, an increasingly obsessed, Elizabeth uses everything at her disposal to try to ensure that the background check bill passes, testing the loyalty and limits of those around her (including the firm's head played by Mark Strong, and an ambitious protégé in Gugu Mbatha-Raw) with her sliding morality and deep distrust of others. Relationships are nothing but arsenal (and thus disposable) and she's the only one who will ever know the

grand plan. The only person who manages to get close to Elizabeth is an inquisitive male escort with a heart of gold (Jake Lacy) who gets her to say that she chose to forgo a simpler life with kids and family and whatnot for her job. That life wasn't for her in her early 20s and isn't for her now, in her late 30s, either. It's not the most revealing conversation, but we've let many a male character get away with far less. While it is fun to see Chastain as a powerful boss lady, raising a martini glass to her competitors (including a sniveling Michael Stuhlbarg) who she's just publicly embarrassed with another move of political cunning, the story itself just skates along an already well-established surface of corrupt Washington narratives.

Pulling back on "Arrival" but not "Incarnate" By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge I’m going to get around to telling you about “Incarnate”, the lone new wide release in theatres this weekend, but I want you to brace yourself first because it’s really awful. So instead, I’m going to write a little about what’s on my mind in the world of movie-going these days. When we start to head toward Christmas, film critics begin to put up their lists of the most entertaining and/or artistically important pictures they saw this year. Most of those are either long forgotten gems from many months ago or are coming soon to the broad landscape of holiday film programming. It was with subtle confusion at seeing “Arrival” – a film in active release

now – on many of these lists that I went back to see it again. When I reviewed it for you last month, I was unimpressed and maybe a little dismissive. But I am a big enough man to admit when I am wrong and the return trip has given me an appreciation for the tone of the show that I clearly missed the first time around. Let me tell you a little bit about my experiences with repeat viewings in general and a little bit more about why you should see “Arrival” for yourselves. Ever see a comedy in a crowded auditorium? Sure you have. It’s a great thing to behold when 350 people are laughing at the same thing at the same time. Or weeping during a tearjerker. Or being chilled out by a horror film. The communal nature of movie-going is half the

reward (and half the problem, but that’s a different topic) and you’ll find that seeing it through the emotions of others is often rewarding. But not always. Take the great movie “School of Rock” that Jack Black starred in about a dozen years ago. I saw that thing four times with a bunch of different people and laughed my head off. Ditto “Shrek.” Then the DVD experience left me unamused. Was I burned out? Had I seen it too many times? Or was it just a tough room my fifth time through? We all know the love of a “classic” movie; they’re infinitely rewatchable. Why do you think the Turner networks rerun “The Shawshank Redemption” and “A Christmas Story” so often? Because you’ll watch them - and with good reason.

“Arrival” was a little deeper than I was prepared for the first go ‘round. It uses foreshadowing with better skill than many movies do and I guess I wasn’t on its wavelength t h a t d a y. Amy Adams is remarkable in it, conveying vulnerability and intellect in full equal measure. I stand by my contention that Jeremy Renner is underwhelming, but don’t mistake this for being malicious or injurious to the story. He’s simply playing a flat role without any flair of his own. And my criticism of the time travel elements of the movie? When you see it again, you don’t harbor the same resentment of chronology. I just wish I hadn’t ruined the twists for myself seeing them as cold as I did. Oh well…regrets come and go. Film is forever.

December 15, 2016

And “Incarnate”? It’s a low budget horror film about a doctor (Aaron Eckhart, making a serious misstep after his supporting turn in “Sully”) who tries to cure the demon possession of a young boy by going into his subconscious to do battle with the entity. This could have been called a dozen other names (like “Insidious” or “The Conjuring”) and is completely without merit. It’s also produced by the people at WWE. Why are they making horror movies in the first place? That’s a scary question to ponder. “Incarnate” runs 91 minutes and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of horror violence, disturbing i m a g e s , b r i e f s t ro n g l a n g u a g e , sensuality, and thematic elements. I give this film one-half star out of four.

The Muny announces 2017 season lineup For The Edge The Muny announced its 2017 summer season, the 99th summer season in Forest Park. The exciting, bold line-up includes 2 Muny premieres, a revised version of rarely produced The Unsinkable Molly Brown, the comedic masterpiece A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and the return of two all-time Muny favorites A Chorus Line and Jesus Christ Superstar. The seven shows are: Jesus Christ Superstar (June 12 – 18), Disney’s The Little Mermaid (June 20 – 29), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (July 5 –11), All Shook Up (July 13 –19), The Unsinkable Molly Brown (July 21 –27), A Chorus Line (July 29 – August 4), and Newsies (August 7 –13). Season ticket holders will receive their renewal notices the first week of December. New season tickets will be available beginning Monday, March 6, 2017, at the Muny box office in Forest Park. This is a challenging, vibrant, bold line-up, with seven shows of terrific variety, and wonderful stories and gorgeous music. The Arts Artistic adventures Westport to present "Menopause The Musical"

G F o u r P ro d u c t i o n s , w i n n e r of 44 Tony Awards and 54 Drama Desk Awards, proudly brings the international hit show "Menopause The Musical" to the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza, 635 Westport Plaza, in St. Louis for weekly performances beginning Friday, January 6, 2017 and running through Sunday, February 12. Tickets are on sale now and available at the Playhouse @ Westport Plaza Box Office, online at playhouseatwestport.com, or by calling 314-534-1111. Greater d i s c o u n t s f o r g ro u p s o f 1 0 + available by calling 314-616-4455. Save 50% on tickets with code MENO50. "Menopause The Musical" is a groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” Now celebrating 14 years of female empowerment through hilarious musical comedy, "Menopause The Musical" has evolved as a “grassroots” movement of women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead. Set in a department store, four women meet while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. After noticing unmistakable similarities among one another, the cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and much more. These women form a

sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.” Performance schedule at Playhouse @ Westport Plaza, beginning Friday, January 6 through Sunday, February 12:

Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Fridays at 8 p.m. Saturdays at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sundays at 2 p.m. Inspired by a hot flash and a

bottle of wine, "Menopause The Musical"® is a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laughterfilled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s

BREATH EASY THIS WINTER

and ‘80s. "Menopause The Musical", now in its fourteenth year of production, is recognized as the longest-running scripted production in Las Vegas and continues to entertain nightly at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Aurora's Paramount Theatre extends "Disney's The Little Mermaid" For The Edge Due to record advance sales, Aurora's Paramount Theatre has announced a one-week extension of its upcoming, holiday-season production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. Originally scheduled for a six week run November 23, 2016 through January 8, 2017, Disney's The Little Mermaid will now run seven weeks, through January 15, 2017. "Response to Disney's The Little Mermaid at the box office has been incredible. We are already selling out shows. We need to add performances to even begin to try to accommodate the unprecedented response from the community," confirmed Tim Rater, President and CEO, Paramount Theatre. "We presented Mary Poppins in 2014 and had over 62,000 people (a Paramount record) through the doors," added Rater. "We're on pace to easily surpass that mark by 50 percent. So before we even open, we are confidently adding an extra week of shows." P e r f o r m a n c e s t h ro u g h t h e original closing date, January 8, remain Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Thursday at 7 p.m.; Friday at 8 p.m.; Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Exceptions: No show Thursday, November 24 (Thanksgiving). Show times o n C h r i s t m a s E v e , S a t u r d a y, December 24, are noon and 5 p.m. No shows Christmas Day. Newly added extension p e r f o r m a n c e s a r e T h u r s d a y, January 12 at 10 a.m.; Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, January 14 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, January 15 at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Single tickets, on sale now, remain $47 to $59 for all performances. The Paramount Theatre is located at 23 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown Aurora. To p u r c h a s e t i c k e t s , g o t o ParamountAurora.com, call (630)

896-6666, or visit the Paramount box office Monday through S a t u rd a y, 1 0 a . m . t o 6 p . m . , and two hours prior to evening performances. Disney's The Little Mermaid is rated G. Who doesn't love the blockbuster Disney movie about a mermaid who longs to leave her enchanted underwater kingdom to find love up above? No matter your age, your experience with the story, or if you believe in mermaids or not, your family will want to be front and center when the curtain goes up on Paramount's magical new production

of Disney's The Little Mermaid. Paramount's can't-miss, catchy take on this beloved family classic promises to make a huge splash with the show's familiar fish out of water story, coupled with one Disney hit after another including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl," "Part of Your World" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls." In true Paramount tradition, the 12-member Paramount orchestra will play the full, original B ro a d w a y o rc h e s t r a t i o n s f o r Disney's The Little Mermaid. Acclaimed director/

choreographer Amber Mak, who helmed Paramount's smash hit Hairspray last season, returns to stage a creative new take on the show's live theatrical production with music director/conductor Tom Vendafreddo. Plus, amazing undersea creatures created by master puppeteer Jesse Mooney-Bullock promise to bring new aquatic life to Paramount's next awe-inspiring production. "Disney's The Little Mermaid is the kind of production that has Amber Mak, Tom Vendafreddo and the entire Paramount creative team chomping at the bit," said J i m C o r t i , A r t i s t i c D i re c t o r, Paramount Theatre. "Bringing the underwater surroundings to life, creating puppets and costumes that transform humans into undersea creatures, developing a system that will allow mermaids to swim and arranging a score for the Paramount orchestra that will give audiences chills are exactly the challenges we thrive on." Disney's The Little Mermaid, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright, is based on the original 1837 Hans Christian Andersen tale and the Disney film written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It debuted on Broadway in 2008, earning numerous award nominations and legions of fans. The Broadway cast album, released

in 2008 by Walt Disney Records, debuted at number 26 on the Billboard 200, the highest position for a cast album in 25 years, second only to RENT. The original 1989 Disney film The Little Mermaid won two Academy Awards (Best Score and Best Song for "Under the Sea"), two Golden Globes and two Grammys. More about Paramount's 2016-17 Broadway Series Paramount's 2016-17 season lineup is anchored by its acclaimed Broadway musical series, which opened with Mamma Mia!(Sept. 7-Oct. 30, 2016), and continues with Disney's The Little Mermaid (Nov. 23, 2016-Jan. 15, 2017), Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Feb. 8-Mar. 19, 2017) and Jesus Christ Superstar (Apr. 19-May 28, 2017). Paramount's 2016-17 Broadway Series is sponsored by BMO Harris Bank and The Dunham Fund. Broadway Series Orchestra Sponsor is Rush-Copley Medical Center. Broadway Series Lighting Sponsor is ComEd. Broadway Series Costume Sponsor is Gerald Kia. Disney's The Little Mermaid is also sponsored by Hampton Inn and Suites Aurora. JERUSALEM (AP) — For Reform Jews like us, Hanukkah means lighting candles, eating latkes and opening presents. But this year the holiday holds deeper meaning: It's a way of remembering our trip to Israel, where we connected with the real story of Hanukkah and brought a piece of it home. We took the trip to celebrate our son Aden's bar mitzvah. In addition to me, my husband and our sons ages 10, 13 and 16, six other relatives came along. I'd imagined this once-in-a-lifetime bucket list adventure for years, but we'd never traveled with three generations before. And while I usually do our trip-planning, this time we hired a guide and driver so we could safely cover a lot of ground in a short time. A big part of the success of our trip was our guide, Dani Margolis, who was worth his weight in shekels. Official Israeli guides are required to know ancient history, food, culture and geography. Dani knows that and more: He's tended camels with Bedouins, apprenticed with archaeologists, been in the army and now lives on a kibbutz. An avid outdoorsman and foodie, he also pushed us outside our comfort zones, from rappelling in the Valley of Death outside Jerusalem to eating schwarma near the Golan Heights. His itinerary seemed optimistic, if not insane for a family ranging in age from 10 to 78. But his enthusiasm,

knowledge and storytelling kept us going. When Dani said climb into a tiny underground cave, or stand on a volcano overlooking the Syrian border with mortars firing in the distance, we did it and were better for it. When Dani said we were headed to an archaeological dig, I feared boredom. But our visit to the National Park of Beit Guvrin turned out to be a highlight for all, from kids to grandparents. Armed with dirty shovels, spades and buckets, we got a lesson in the proper way to dig before entering the underground unexcavated caves. The program, called Dig for a Day, is run by the Archaeological Seminars Institute. The cool, dark cave we explored was small with low, uneven ceilings, partitioned by a few rocky walls and lit by generators. We each got two buckets: one for significant finds and one for junk. We couldn't believe how much fun it was to sit in a pile of dirt, sifting the ground, looking for signs of life from 2,000 years ago. It was thrilling to find even the tiniest remnants of ancient pottery, animal bones and tile. We oohed and ahed in envy when a girl unearthed a small intact metal oil lamp. You can't keep what you find. But you can take bits home from piles of broken artifacts that have been examined and deemed superfluous. We eagerly filled our pockets with pottery shards of all different colors and textures.

Travel

For The Edge

Making maple syrup the old-fashioned way is just one of McHenry County's wonderful winter activities, along with skiing, snowshoeing and more.

McHenry County's winter wonderland For The Edge Family outings in McHenry County, Illinois, just northwest of Chicago, are a super way to work some fun into cold winter days, ward off post-holiday blues and keep cabin fever at bay. Here's a wonderland of ideas. All are an easy driving distance from Chicago, Milwaukee and Rockford. Many can be reached via Metra trains from Chicago. For routes and timetables, log on to www.metrarail.com. Before heading out, be sure to consult websites or phone ahead for additional information, days open, hours and driving directions. CONSERVATION DISTRICT EVENTS & RECREATION The McHenry County Conservation District manages 27 recreation areas that invite you to hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, skate, ride snowmobiles, fish or just enjoy viewing wildlife...free of charge! The District also offers a winter-long schedule of events and educational programs for all ages. Find complete details with locations and directions, and sign up for email updates at www.mccdistrict. org Hike or Ski on Solar Lighted Trails through March 5: With early winter sunsets there's little time to play after work, but you can get out every evening after dark at two District sites on trails lit with solarpowered lamps. Pleasant Valley in Woodstock is a half-mile looped trail on fairly flat terrain, perfect for beginners or shorter outings; Hickory Grove Highlands is a onemile looped trail through a newly restored savanna, offering a longer scenic route for intermediate skiers.

22

Seize the Day, through February: When the perfect snow arrives, it's time to drop everything and enjoy it! Conservation District staff members are on call to offer an activity or program, such as a crosscounty ski lesson, a snowshoe hike, or perhaps night sledding. Sign up to receive an email or phone call that will let you know when, what and where. Cross-Country Skiing: When there's four inches or more of snow on the ground, you can glide over 40 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails at 17 different sites throughout the county. From the half-mile trail at Pleasant Valley, to the 1.25mile looped trail at Hickory Grove Highlands, to the specially groomed trail for "skate skiing" at Silver Creek Conservation Area, there's something for everyone. Snowmobile Trails Are Open After December 10: The District maintains more than 17 miles of snowmobile trails in Glacial Park and along the Prairie Trail that connect with other County trails. Trails are open when there is at least four inches of snow on frozen ground or six inches on unfrozen ground. Cross-Country Candlelight Ski, Prairieview Education Center, Crystal Lake, December 16 & 17; Coral Woods Conservation Area, Marengo, January 20 & 21; Rush Creek Conservation Area, Harvard, February 10 & 11: Don't miss your chance to cross-country ski on trails lit only by candlelight! Skiers of every experience level and age are welcome. Bring your own equipment and gather around the campfire for refreshments after your time out on the trail. Trails

will be groomed for skiing if there is 4 inches of snow or more. If not enough snow, leave the skis at home and enjoy a candlelight hike and the allure of the winter woods. Note: Check before you go. Cancellations may occur due to weather. Winter Explorations, Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, January 7: Stop by anytime or stay for the whole three hours as the McHenry County Conservation District provides you and your children stations for exploring winter's wonders. Play in the snow, look for tracks, warm up with hot chocolate and so much more! No registration required for this free, drop-in program but, check before you go for cancellations or changes due to weather. Festival of the Sugar Maples, Coral Woods Conservation Area, March 4 & 5, 11 & 12: Discover how maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees. Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

Above, the half muffuletta sandwich from Three Kings Public House. Below, the spicy chicken toasted ravioli with a side of sriracha ranch sauce.

Three Kings Public House in The Loop By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge There's no doubt that The Loop in University City, Mo. is an eclectic area when it comes to food. There are plenty of places to choose from and my latest stop comes from one of the more popular joints there — Three Kings Public House. Three Kings is located at 6307 Delmar Blvd. in The Loop, offering upscale pub food and an extensive beer menu — 22 beers on tap and 40 different bottles — the perfect spot for me. There is also a second location for Three Kings at 11925 Manchester Rd. in Des Peres, Mo. if you can't get to The Loop. I visited with my buddies Mike and Chris before checking out a concert at The Pageant, an awesome music venue if you get a chance to go. We had a little time before our show and I thought Three Kings would be the perfect place to grab some good grub and couple brews to get us started. It's a large restaurant with an old school pub feel. It has hardwood floors, plenty of table seating and large booths for patrons. The spacious restaurant offers plenty of room for groups to enjoy their time there. A large mural on the wall of King Henry VIII, King Kong and “The King,” Elvis Presley add a quirky touch to the atmosphere. When we got our hands on a menu we saw what Three Kings really had to offer its visitors and it was plenty. I'll get Mike and Chris out of the way quickly. In a bold and daring move they both ordered chicken strips. I'm sorry, I meant lame, not bold and daring. They said they were very good though. I picked up the slack. Looking for

some uniqueness on the extensive menu I started with an appetizer, the spicy chicken toasted ravioli. When they arrived they appeared like normal, run-of-the-mill toasted ravioli, sprinkled with grated parmesan cheese, but when I bit into one of them it was a different story. The taste was unbelievable. They had a strong buffalo chicken flavor with an incredible spicy kick to them. Accompanied by a sriracha ranch sauce which was a perfect sidekick, t h i s a p p e tize r w as e xtre me ly unique and delicious. The sriracha ranch intensified the spicy kick. Three Kings definitely hit a home run with this appetizer. It got me hyped for my main course. I went with the muffuletta

for my main dish. This gargantuan deli classic is served as a whole sandwich, a half or a quarter. The server pointed me in the direction of the half, but I could have easily gone with the quarter. This sucker was humongous. It c o ns is te d o f hand s lic e d genoa salami, spicy Capicola ham, mortadella, mozzarella and provolone cheeses and olive salad served on thick Italian bread. It's served either cold or hot. I went hot. It also came with a side of French fries. This was where Three Kings had a hiccup. I ordered sweet potato fries, but they brought me regular seasoned fries. They totally redeemed themselves though by still bringing my sweet potato fries,

leaving both for us to devour. Both styles of fries were good. As for the sandwich, it was fantastic. The olive salad gave it a great vinegar and bitter taste to mesh with the saltiness of the thick salami and ham. The cheeses provided the sweetness to reach all the taste spectrums and it was so big I could barely get my mouth around it. To wash it all down I ordered a Ridunkulous Red IPA by Founders Brewery. It had a great hoppy taste, but was really heavy. It was a good thing my monster sandwich could soak some of it up. Mike and Chris somewhat redeemed themselves by ordering dessert. Again they went with the same thing, selecting a three-

December 15, 2016

layered cake. It was chocolate, then cheesecake and then chocolate again. Chris shared a couple bites of his with me and it was sensational, but a little bit went a long way. It was unbelievably rich, definitely not for someone watching their calorie intake. As for the rest of the menu, there was plenty of uniqueness and quirkiness. On the appetizer menu Three Kings offers one of their go-to items, the mussels and fries. The mussels are simmered in a garlic-herb broth and the fries are served with curried caper mayo. There's also the artichoke spinach potato skins and the Captain Crunch shrimp that caught my eye. That's right, jumbo shrimp breaded with crushed Captain Crunch cereal and seasoned flour. You can also check out stuff on gourmet burger, sandwiches and sliders, salads and sides, wraps and entrees menus. I was also intrigued by the s a l m o n B LT, t h e c re o l e t u n a sliders and the gyro sliders. The zarzuela seafood stew on the entree menu sounded pretty good, too. It's a Spanish influenced dish with spicy sausage, shrimp, squid, mussels, peppers, onions and rice simmered in a tomato-saffron broth. Check out the whole menu at www.threekingspub.com. It was a great way for Mike, Chris and I to kick off our night before the concert. We'd all like to make a trip back. Mike and Chris even admitted they'd like to try something besides chicken strips the next visit. So next time you're in The Loop, Des Peres or South County, where Three Kings is opening a third venue, stop by and enjoy a great place to go when you gotta eat.

Kottke, Williams to team up for an evening at The Sheldon “Shut the Folk Up and Listen” featuring Keller Williams and Leo Kottke will be presented at 8 p.m. on March 9, 2017 at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tickets are $46 orchestra and $42 balcony and are available at MetroTix at 314-534-1111 or visit TheSheldon.org. For this tour Williams goes back to his roots,

and with just an acoustic guitar, shares the stage with one of his musical idols, flat picking six and twelve string guitarist Leo Kottke. This unique evening of music features solo sets by both artists and spontaneous collaborations between the two. In Williams’ words, “The ‘Shut the Folk Up and Listen Tour’ is an interesting night at the theater. It starts with one of my acoustic heroes, Leo Kottke. Playing his signature 6 and 12 string Taylor guitars, he effortlessly takes the audience on a journey through his mind by way of his hilarious stories and warm acoustic perfection, just as he has for the past several decades. I’m honored to join him for the last few songs of his set which then leads into a short intermission. After hearing every word and note of Leo’s set through my in-ear monitor system, I then take the stage fully inspired...”

Family Arena to welcome The Beach Boys and The Temptations on their Surf & Soul Tour April 23, 2017. The Beach Boys: Few, if any, acts can match The Beach Boys’ concert presence, spirit and performance. They were centerstage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone—July 4, 1985—they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who along with Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Eichenburger, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill and Scott Totten continue the legacy of the iconic American band. The Temptations: For more than fifty years, The Te m p t a t i o n s h a v e p ro s p e re d , propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties.
