ifty years ago this fall SIUE opened its doors and registered students for the first time. Thousands of students showed up for the registration, and the Edwardsville Intelligencer was there for this historic event. An Intelligencer photographer took a picture of the first five people to complete registration, all of whom were graduates from Collinsville High School, and had spent the night in the parking lot in order to be first in line. We caught up with these five gentleman – Don Brunworth, Ric Stephenson, Jim Seka, Bill Lundak, and John O’Donnell – all of whom still live in the Collinsville-Glen Carbon-Edwardsville area to reflect back on that momentous day and historical time in SIUE’s development. Brunworth recalled that the university was expecting a big crowd for registration so he and Stephenson drove up to Edwardsville together late the evening before registration opened. “We heard through the grapevine, you better get their early,” Brunworth said. “As a unique event, we all wanted to be the first to register at SIU Edwardsville so we knew we had to get there early for that reason,” Stephenson said. The plan was to arrive around 1 a.m., sleep in their vehicle until about 3 a.m. and then be the first in line at 8 a.m. Coincidentally, three other Collinsville High graduates and friends – O’Donnell, Seka and Lundak – had the same idea. “It had nothing to do with notoriety. We just had heard that if you want the classes at the right time, you have to get their early,” Seka explained. “We took my car up there and slept in the car until the next morning.”

“It was kind of spontaneous,” Lundak noted. O’Donnell also fondly referred to by some friends as Jack, recalled seeing security officers shooing away some other cars filled with people who had the same idea. But as luck would have it, O’Donnell said they set up their lawn chairs and cooler, and never were asked to leave. “We woke up at daylight and got in line and then Ric and Don were there so we were the first group there,” Seka added. “We didn’t even know they were coming at all. The three of us went there and stayed overnight and woke up and Ric and his crew were there.” The group of five got in line first. They explained that registration took place at the building, a house, that currently sits on Lewis Street, but the registration experience was quite archaic in those days. “Everything was outside,” Brunworth noted. “Big long tables were set up outside. It was a manual system back then. It was pretty cumbersome.” The potential students had already spoken to advisers and knew exactly what classes they hoped to enroll in. “As things would have it, I was the first one in line,” O’Donnell recalled. “They had the classes categorized by subject. It was kind of a mad house. Everyone was running from table to table. I went directly to the classes I wanted to take. I knew the classes that I wanted before I got in line, and I happened to be the first one out.” An Edwardsville Intelligencer photographer was waiting to snap a photo of the first enrolled student which ended up being a photo of the five men – the first SIUE enrollees. Brunworth reminisced about the SIUE “campus” and roads to the campus back in that first year. “There was no (Interstate) 255,” Brunworth pointed out. “And 157 was a two lane road. It was bumper to bumper traffic to SIUE. It was

an adventure getting up there.” The university itself consisted of just two open buildings and construction was going on everywhere around them. “There was a lot of construction going on at the time. Lot of heavy equipment, a lot of noise,” Seka noted. “The only building that was really open was the technology classroom building and the basement of Lovejoy Library where the vending machines were,” Stephenson recalled. “That’s where you went to eat something. Nothing else was up and running. The parking lots weren’t finished. We parked alongside the roads and then walked to class. It was a heck of a trek into the main campus.” “Most of the time you parked along the road because the gravel parking lots weren’t big enough for the number of people,” Lundak said. “If it rained, you had to walk on boards because it was so muddy. There was no grass around,” Seka said. All five gentlemen attended SIUE for varying years, but they all had the same interruption in their education – serving in the U.S. armed services due to the Vietnam war. “The campus atmosphere of course with Vietnam going on at that time was a little edgy,” Seka pointed out about that time in history. The five men also witnessed many firsts in SIUE’s history. Stephenson recalled several that he enjoyed. He was one of the first male cheerleaders on the SIUE cheerleading squad. He explained that at that time in 1966 the St. Louis Cardinals, the football team, would send over cheerleaders to cheer for various SIUE games because the university didn’t have a cheerleading squad yet. “Guys weren’t commonly on cheerleading squads around here in high school so no guys were trying out,” Stephenson said. “They came to our gymnastics club and said hey, look whoever is trying out gets free tickets to the football (Cardinals) game. And it

December 17, 2015

was the Green Bay Packers game. We thought what the heck – we’ll get free tickets to the game.” “I guess we had the most fun and spirit. We made it,” Stephenson added. “They selected us to be on the cheerleading team which was interesting. The other girls on the team knew that we were not going to be doing what we called doing any “rah rahs” but we did do lifts and different types of gymnastics things. Then the next summer they paid to fly us down to a cheerleading camp at the University of Southern Mississippi. And that’s when we were really introduced to what male cheerleaders could do on a squad. And so I was on that cheerleading squad probably for about three years. It was an interesting experience.” Stephenson was also actively involved in Alpha Delta Chi which was a social fraternity at that time and would later become a chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, a national fraternity. “I was social chairperson and also a vice president with the fraternity. Probably my most enjoyable experience though was that I got involved with the University Center and was on the UC board and became president in ‘69 – that led me to a strong interest in student activities,” Stephenson said. Now 50 years later, the men look back and marvel at what SIUE has become. “When it opened, it just had an excitement about it being brand new. I had no idea that it would grow into what it is today,” Seka said. “It’s been a great addition, I think, to the metroe-ast,” Stephenson said. “We had a lot of fun in the beginning with a growing university. It was an enjoyable experience, and it was exciting to watch the campus grow. There was always something new that was happening – a new tradition, new sports teams.” O’Donnell chuckled recalling how far SIUE has come in 50 years when he pointed out that his first quarter bill from SIUE was only $80.50. “It’s amazing what they’ve done up there,” he said.

People Arch will suspend tram rides Renovation project expected to be complete in the spring For The Edge Visitor experiences inside the Gateway Arch facility—including entrance indoors, Journey to the Top tram rides, Monument to the Dream movie showings, and access to the Arch Museum Store and Levee Mercantile—will be temporarily suspended Monday, January 4, 2016. These aspects of the visitor experience will be made available in spring 2016, when a renovated Arch Museum Store, a new digital projection system in the Tucker Theater, renovated restrooms, lighting and flooring updates will debut. The Gateway Arch park grounds and access to the exterior of the Arch, as well as access to the riverfront via the Arch Grand Staircase, will remain available for visitors. Visitors can visit the base of the Arch’s South Leg and the newly renovated Luther Ely Smith Square, located between the Arch and Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis. The public can take in more of the CityArchRiver construction outdoors with a special viewing platform in the square. The Old Courthouse will continue to operate normally and will offer plenty of visitor activities during this time. “We encourage everyone to visit the Old Courthouse to view free exhibit galleries focusing on early St. Louis, Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery expedition, and the settlement of the Great Plains, as well as restored original courtrooms and an exhibit gallery focused on Dred and Harriet Scott, and their freedom suit,” says Rhonda Schier, Chief, Museum Services and Interpretation, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. During this time, the Old Courthouse will host a variety of free activities such as free viewings of Monument to the Dream documentary, which details the construction of the Gateway Arch; daily, ranger-led talks and interactive stations; and ranger-led walks to the Arch (weather permitting). In addition, the Family Fun program on Saturdays at 10 a.m. features an interactive presentation on a westward bound pioneer group followed by a craft activity. Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., visitors can participate in a 30-minute Dred Scott mock trial, based on Scott’s second trail held in the Old Courthouse. Visitors will play the roles of participants such as the bailiff and jury members. Art and Music in the Old Courthouse program will be offered on Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m., and features a ranger-led talk and music as visitors participate in an indoor art project. Visitors interested in participating in any of these free programs should inquire with a ranger at the Information Desk in the Old Courthouse Rotunda. More information will be made available at www.gatewayarch.com. The Arch Store, a new museum store designed by architect Charles Sparks & Co., will be constructed by local contractor ICS Construction Services. It will include interpretive products that align with the themes that will be presented in the new Arch museum, which opens in 2017. The store will sell homemade fudge that is currently available in the Leve e Mercantile. These improvements, coupled with the CityArchRiver renovations to the park grounds and museum, will completely transform the Gateway Arch experience for all visitors. “We are very eager to introduce this new shopping experience to visitors this spring,” says David Grove, President and CEO of Jefferson National Parks Association, the nonprofit partner of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the organization funding the renovation. “This renovation will combine our current Arch Museum Store and Levee Mercantile into one, resulting in 4,000 square feet of store space. It will feature a blend of thematic merchandise relating both to the Gateway Arch and to the historic themes of the park.” A variety of parking locations are available within walking distance to the Arch and the Old Courthouse. A list of downtown parking locations is available at http://getaroundstl.com/ attractions/parking. Metered street parking is available around the Old Courthouse. Visitors are encouraged to check www.gatewayarch.com/directions for up-to-date information on road detours and construction surrounding the Arch grounds before their visit. The Arch is accessible only by foot via the Walnut Street Bridge located at Memorial Drive and Walnut Street, near the Old Cathedral, and by the Arch Grand Staircase, located on the Mississippi Riverfront. A list of downtown St. Louis parking locations within walking distance of the Arch and Old Courthouse is available at http://getaroundstl.com. Metered street parking is also available around the Old Courthouse. The Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse are part of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, located on the riverfront in downtown St. Louis. The Old Courthouse, which features westward expansion exhibits, is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. The park is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year ’s Day. The Old Courthouse is located at 11 North Fourth Street, St. Louis, MO 63102. Most programs are free of charge and open to the public. Programs and events at the park are made possible by the generous support from our cooperating association, Jefferson National Parks Association, and Bi-State Development. To purchase Arch tickets, go online to www.gatewayarch.com, call 877-982-1410, or visit the Arch Ticketing & Visitor Center at the Old Courthouse. The Arch’s museum is closed for renovations until mid2017.

Pictured are conceptualized drawings of the Saint Louis Science Center's proposed agricultural exhibit, GROW.

Science Center to add agricultural focus For The Edge The Saint Louis Science Center is announcing the development of a new permanent agriculture exhibition that will engage visitors in the future of our food supply, and inspire the next generation of farmers, scientists, engineers and agriculture professionals. This one acre exhibit, titled GROW, greatly extends the Science Center footprint and incorporates a permanent outdoor learning space with interactive exhibits and activities, in addition to permanent classrooms housed in a pavilion designed by globally renowned architect Gyo Obata. GROW will be open year round, to follow the changing seasons and stages of food production, distribution and consumption. GROW will be the first major addition of a permanent exhibit by the Saint Louis Science Center since 1991, when the main building of the facility (located at 5050 Oakland Avenue) was built. The $7.3 million project, which the Science Center expects to open in summer 2016, will be on the former Exploradome site, which held temporary exhibits until it was deflated in 2013. This unique suite of exhibits will be the only one of its kind in the United States, and will allow students, adults and families from across the St. Louis metropolitan area and beyond, to enjoy a fun, science-based experiential journey of food from farm to fork. Educators and students of all grade levels will have an immersive learning experience in which the concepts of chemistry, economics and life sciences are presented across different scenarios and seasons. Individuals of all ages, whether they

are from rural, suburban or urban communities, will participate in activities and programs that are fun, educational and interactive. “The global population will increase from 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050, which could require a 70% increase in global agricultural production. Food underpins our day-to-day life and is only becoming more important, and our exhibit addresses the critical local, regional and global issues related to our food supply,” said Saint Louis Science Center President and CEO Bert Vescolani. “We are fulfilling our

commitment to ignite and sustain life-long science and technology learning by inviting visitors to explore the connections between themselves, agriculture and the food supply, and teaching children and adults to act as stewards for future sustainability.” GROW introduces and supports content related to agriculture, agronomics, and plant and animal biology, highlighted through the different personal connections visitors have to the food they eat. Exhibit spaces include: • Your Journey Begins: An

introduction to farming in the Missouri-Illinois region, including interviews with local farmers. • Agriculture Pavilion: The economics and technology behind transporting food from farm to fork, and how farming influences local and world cultures and economies. • Water and Weather: How water and rain are some of the most precious resources to farmers, and how farmers use both traditional and modern technology to maximize water efficiency. • How Plants Work: How the inner workings of plants harvest

energy from the sun to support all life on Earth. • Farming Today: Real world farming from big machines and live animals to state-of-the-art technology. • The Greenhouse: Learn about a working commercial aquaponic farm, while completing projects with others • Fermentation Station: Participate in demonstrations and sample a variety of food and beverages, including cheese, wine, and beer • DIY Farming: Get dirty and create your own personal farming experience. “We intend GROW to cultivate agricultural knowledge by helping people dig deeper and satisfy their curiosity about something that impacts them every day of their lives,” said Vescolani. “Science, t e c h n o l o g y, e n g i n e e r i n g a n d mathematics play a large role in the American agriculture industry. By helping people understand the science behind crops, plants, animals and weather, and how all these elements combine to form a system, we’re preparing future generations with knowledge that can be used to innovate and sustain our food supply.” Gyo Obata, Arcturis, and Gyroscope have teamed up with Science Center staff to design this unique combination of plants, buildings and amazing new experiences. The general contractor is Interface Construction, SWT Design will perform architectural landscaping, and USA Exhibits will fabricate some of the more than 40 new exhibits. More information about GROW may be found at slsc.org/GROW.

"Carol"

"Carol" is an overwhelmingly beautiful film. It looks like a dream, it sounds like whispered want, and it feels like falling in love in all its stomach turning terror and ecstasy. Even its title rolls elegantly off the tongue. In "Carol," director Todd Haynes, his filmmaking team and his formidable leads Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara have birthed that rare, precious creation where the substance, the story and the emotions all stand on equal footing to the film's loveliness — easily making it one of the year's best. The story, adapted from Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel "The Price of Salt," is both straightforward and deeply complex. It's about two lost souls at very different ages and stations finding each other by chance and altering the course of the other's life. It's just a glance — longing at first sight — across a crowded Christmastime department store when Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), a gawky shop girl in a tattered Santa hat spots Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett), dripping in tasteful furs and corals and regal confidence. Carol sees Therese too, and they hold each other's gaze for a wistful moment. But their mutual, immediate attraction isn't that simple. It's New York City in the early 1950s and same sex relationships are, at the very least, not a widely accepted public affair. There's more at stake than just the possible heartbreak of any passionate relationship in this setting. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a scene of sexuality/nudity and brief language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

"Youth"

Superheroes and franchise blockbusters may dominate the multiplex, but Paolo Sorrentino's "Youth" is a reminder of the touching, unexpected and unusual places movies can go. Original and unpredictable, "Youth" trusts its audience's curiosity and powers of perception. Sorrentino doesn't overexplain his story or characters — they simply stand as written, awaiting discovery. "Youth" is almost the antithesis of the Hollywood blockbuster, and not just because of its non-linear narrative. Despite its title, the film centers on a relationship between two octogenarians, and presents people of all ages, sizes and appearances as worthy of interest and love. The film's idyllic setting is a vintage health spa in the Swiss Alps that offers nightly live entertainment and daily nude hot-pool soaks amid breathtaking mountain landscapes. Retired composer Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) is there for his annual retreat, accompanied by his daughter, Lena (Rachel Weisz). Fred's lifelong friend, Hollywood filmmaker Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel), is there, too. Also staying at the resort is famous American actor Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano), who is preparing for his next role. He befriends the older men as they check out their fellow guests, including an obese retired soccer player, an elegantly dressed couple who never speak, a teenage masseuse with braces, a meditating monk, a pudgy young prostitute, and Miss Universe. Lena is worried about Fred, who has just declined an invitation from the Queen of England to conduct his most beloved composition at a concert for Prince Philip. Fred insists he's retired and done with life; Lena says he's apathetic. But when no one is watching, Fred imagines himself conducting the sounds he hears in nature. He talks about life and age and memories with Mick, who's otherwise focused on his latest screenplay, which he calls his "testament." He brought a group of young screenwriters with him to help brainstorm the film's ending. Jimmy, meanwhile, spends most of his time observing everyone else. The men connect over questions of creativity: Fred and Mick

struggle with the idea of legacy and continuing self-expression into old age; Jimmy wonders about the best use of his creative skills and what makes them meaningful. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "graphic nudity, some sexuality and language." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

"The Danish Girl"

Most people probably don't know the name Lili Elbe. This reviewer didn't. But Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl" will make sure you won't soon forget the transgender icon, even if this well-intentioned, extravagant movie leaves you with more questions than revelations. Almost a century before Caitlyn Jenner graced the cover of Vanity Fair, Lili Elbe (born Einar Wegener) became one of the first transgender women to undergo documented sex reassignment surgery. Eddie Redmayne, who adroitly disappeared into the character Stephen Hawking for "The Theory of Everything," has taken on the task of another transformation to portray Einar/Lili throughout her discovery and transition. He uses his androgynous frame, delicate features, and refined beauty to full effect in representing the physical realization of Lili. The timing of this film, based on the book by David Ebershoff, couldn't be more perfect and yet it also feels far too late. That's not the fault of the filmmakers here, but more a result of constantly shifting culture. This is all to say that the film has an almost impossible standard to live up to, especially now — both in doing justice to Lili's life as well as to the audience who may only learn about her through what they see on screen. In some ways it succeeds beautifully. Ideas swirl readily and boldly, especially considering the time in which it's taking place. This is not a shy movie. In fact, it's refreshingly sexual, alive and empathetic, at least at the start. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for some sexuality and full nudity. RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Chi-Raq"

More alive than most of the year's films put together, Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" is urgent agitprop that pulsates with unalloyed rage for the "self-inflicted genocide" of South Chicago and explodes with full-hearted (and gloriously lewd) pleas for peace. It's wildly uneven but it is wild. There's plenty here to quibble with (the film's title prompted outrage in Chicago), but unassailable is its passion to bring attention and compassion to Chicago's blood-soaked streets. "This is an emergency" flashes across the screen early in "Chi-Raq," a hip-hop musical and a social satire that Lee co-wrote with Kevin Willmott ("C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America") and sets to the beat of Terence Blanchard's score. It's an updating of Aristophanes' ancient Greek comedy "Lysistrata," in which Athenian women wage a sex strike against their warrior men to end the Peloponnesian War. Lee and Willmott have transplanted the tale to Chicago, where the murder rate has far surpassed the number of Americans killed in Iraq. Lee is best as a megaphone for street-level outrage. Whereas most filmmakers gradually ebb in spiritedness as they age, Lee — in good and not-so-good films — has remained uniquely unpredictable and remarkably prolific. His last great film, 2006's "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts," fed off the fury of New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina. "Chi-Raq," which takes its title from the controversial nickname for the violence-plagued city, is Lee's most vital

December 17, 2015

film at least since then. It's a farce, wrapped heavily in stylistic overtures, with maybe a half-dozen introductions to Chicago and to "Chi-Raq," including Nick Cannon's "Pray 4 My City," played with lyrics blazed across the screen, and Samuel Jackson's pimplike narrator, Dolmedes, who raps, "We can't take this much more." The story takes a long time to arrive, and when it does, it and the characters remain secondary to the overall frenzy of the movie, all of which is in rhyming verse. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content including dialogue, nudity, language, some violence and drug use." RUNNING TIME: 127 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Four stars out of four.

"Macbeth"

William Shakespeare's Scottish play gets a highly stylized, moody and occasionally mystifying update, courtesy of Justin Kurzel, the Australian director responsible for the haunting "Snowtown." For the poor souls who haven't cracked "Macbeth" since high school (or those current students looking for an easy study guide), Kurzel's adaptation isn't going to do you any favors — the whispered line readings make the Bard's verses all but incomprehensible and, at times, numbingly dull. But for Shakespeare devotees who delight in debating the merits and flaws of previous big screen attempts from the likes of Orson Welles and Roman Polanski, Kurzel's entry is an interesting one. This version begins with an unsettling sight: Macbeth (Michael Fassbender) and his wife, Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard) witnessing the burial of their dead child atop a gusty, gray hill in the desolate Scottish Highlands. The mourning transitions into a stunningly violent and mystical battle sequence, clouded by fog and mist and slowed in parts with an almost video game-like vulgarity, where Macbeth hears the witches' prophecy that he will be King. It is in this war-weary and grief-stricken state that Lady Macbeth convinces her husband to murder King Duncan (David Thewlis). Ambition and greed fill their voids, and Macbeth becomes the executor of their future. Malcolm (Jack Reynor), King Duncan's heir, witnesses the murder and flees, adding an immediate tension to everything that happens after. More violence follows. Once Macbeth assumes the throne, he begins his slow descent into madness. Fassbender, who has mastered the tricky rhythms of Quentin Tarantino in "Inglorious Basterds" and Aaron Sorkin in "Steve Jobs," delivers Shakespeare as confidently and effectively (if too quietly) — coming alive as he loses his mind. No one plays agony quite like Fassbender. The banquet scene where Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo (Paddy Considine) is a particular highlight, though less terrifying than Polanski's rendering. Macbeth's ever heightening paranoia provides a much needed engine for the film, which, despite the visual interest, comparatively brisk pacing and mesmeric battles, is weakened by those largely whispered and mumbled lines. Kurzel's "Macbeth" is also stripped of unnecessary adornments in the script, story, and set design. You feel like a settler on an uninhabited, unforgiving land. He's even compared it to a Western. The set design is spare, purposeful and authentic. The settings are cold and small in contrast to the spectacularly harsh landscapes. The austereness allows for bold choices, like the shock of blue eyeshadow that is streaked across Lady Macbeth's eyes. It also makes her dreamily bright sleepwalking scene that much more haunting. RATED: has not been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America, but contains realistic depictions of violent warfare and disturbing imagery. RUNNING TIME:113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"Spotlight" worthy of recent attention By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge After a slow rollout during most of November, "Spotlight" has finally started to garner some big time attention. When I first saw this movie, it instantly jumped to the front of my list as the best I'd seen in 2015. It's subject matter is not necessarily the most entertaining, but the performances and structure handle it gracefully. It's an investigative newspaper movie, one that makes deadlines and anonymous tip lines look pretty sexy when they're run by the likes of Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo. Suffice it to say, I know a fair amount of good newspaper people and I think they'll appreciate the sheer volume of hard work done by the characters in this picture as well as the earnestness to get the story

right much like great films like "All the President's Men". In early 2001, some allegations of sexual abuse of children in the Boston area were charged of Catholic priest John Geoghan. The archdiocese, a powerful institution in a famously blue-collar metropolis, was able to get him released from jail into their custody so they could handle the matter in-house. It was around the time that this non-story was falling out of the public consciousness that Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber) took over as the editor of the Boston Globe. He was a wild card in town, a Jew from Miami, that was clear about doing things a little differently from the on-set. He "strongly advises" the Spotlight investigative team to pursue the Geoghan story to see what more there is to it. Spotlight's long time editor, Walter "Robby" Robinson,

resents the implication that he can't properly follow his own leads, but he's also astute enough to smell a good story when one is framed for him. Robby fronts a team of three reporters: Mike Rezendes (Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (McAdams), and Matt Carroll (Brian D'Arcy James). Together they dig into old issues and dusty periodicals to clarify and confirm many of the charges that stem from one-on-one and group interviews with both victims and the attorneys that represent them. Two of the more colorful characters in this film are those of Phil Saviano (Neal Huff), a survivor that forms advocacy group SNAP's Boston chapter, and Mitchell Garabedian (Stanley Tucci), a harried lawyer who's making as many waves as he can to draw attention to the families being destroyed by the clergy they go to for help. The deeper the

Spotlight team digs, the more sordid the details unearthed become. Geoghan, obviously, was just the tip of the iceberg. When a psychiatrist (voiced unseen by Richard Jenkins) gives them a statistic about deviant sexual behavior leading to a higher percentage of priests, they're led to believe it could be as high as ninety perpetrators in town. And then 9/11 happens. Forget scooping the Herald because just like every other media outlet in the world, the Boston Globe turned its sights to the tragedies of September 11th, 2001 and the aftermath that we still feel in our every day. The effort of more than a year turned into indictments and prison terms for five priests (including Geoghan, who was murdered in prison in 2003), an international scandal for the Church, more than $100 million in settlements, the resignation of Cardinal Bernard

December 17, 2015

Law (Len Cariou), and a Pulitzer prize for the men and women that invested their professional careers on this hometown gamble. Much like the original Globe news stories, "Spotlight" flew under the radar for a few years. It's screenplay was included in the 2013 Black List, the report of the so-called best unproduced movies scripts of the year. With great work by Keaton - who's clearly on a career upswing - and supporting actors like John Slattery, Billy Crudup, and a slimy Jamey Sheridan, this movie should be on every year-end list. I really think it's just getting started. "Spotlight" runs 128 minutes and is rated R for some language including sexual references. I give this film four stars out of four.

With more than 100 events in the next several weeks, the ShowMe State has an array of holiday activities to keep you busy from now until Jolly Old St. Nick arrives – and beyond. Read on to learn more about the fun experiences waiting for you in Missouri this holiday season, and then check the VisitMO blog for more holiday activities. Light Up the Night Light shows are a big part of the holidays, and Missouri’s lightcentric events, drive-thru light parks and attractions – such as Branson’s Silver Dollar City, which features more than five million lights and 1,000 decorated trees during the An Old Time Christmas festival running through Dec. 30 – are enough to make even Clark W. Griswold jealous. The Enchanted Village of Lights in Laurie is the Lake of the Ozarks area’s largest drive-thru holiday light park, covering some 27 acres on the Laurie Fairgrounds. Christmas Eve, the streets of this historic city are filled with songs of the season, Santas from around the world and great shopping and dining opportunities. The gingerbread village and chances to meet Santa delight youngsters. Beautiful Homes are Waiting Festive greenery, beautifully decorated trees and candlelight help add to the beauty of the Missouri homes open for tours during the holiday season. A visit to any one of these locales might help inspire your decorating efforts before the in-laws show up this year. One of Cape Girardeau’s architectural jewels shows off its Victorian elegance during the holidays. Christmas at the Glenn House (circa 1883) gives you the chance to see this restored home, where rooms depict life in the early 1900s, and to enjoy cookies, coffee and cider in the carriage house. Tours begin Nov. 27 and run 1 p.m.4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through December. V i s i t Va i l e M a n s i o n i n

Music Tuning in Fox to host Experience Hendrix Tour

The 2016 Experience Hendriz Tour will stop at the Fox Theatre for an 8 p.m. show on March 8. Live at the Fabulous Fox Tuesday, March 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $100, $85, $60, $50, $40, $30 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Hailed by critics and fans alike as the ‘Guitar Event Of The Year,’ the multi-artist celebration known as the Experience Hendrix Tour is set to return in 2016. These special concert performances present legendary artists who join together to pay homage to Jimi Hendrix. This next edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour will encompass twenty seven performances this coming February and March, stopping in more than two dozen cities along the east coast, midwest and southern states. Now in its second decade, the tour celebrates the musical genius of Jimi Hendrix by bringing together a diverse array of extraordinary musicians, ranging from blues legend Buddy Guy to Black Label Society and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, as well as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa and many others. Billy Cox, bassist for both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys, anchors a rhythm section that provides the foundation for exciting renditions of such signature Hendrix favorites as “Purple Haze” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer in both rock and blues, and expanded the possibilities of what could be achieved with the electric guitar, forever altering the course of music history. Likewise, the Experience Hendrix Tour is developing a rich history of its own. By 2004, the first Experience Hendrix Tour came to fruition with a three-date string of shows on the west coast, starting in Hendrix’s hometown of Seattle. By 2008, the Experience Hendrix Tour had become a full-fledged, coastto-coast expedition that continues to date, without showing any signs of slowing down Audiences are presented the opportunity to see great artists paying homage to Hendrix and collaborating with each other in ways they’d never do in their own live shows. “It is such an honor to be asked back for another run,” says blues/gospel/rock guitar prodigy Jonny Lang, who has played every tour since 2008. “The music of Jimi Hendrix speaks to each of us in indelible ways. It’s another chance to celebrate his legacy.” Multiple Grammy-winner and 2015 Kennedy Center honoree Buddy Guy, who was both an inspiration to as well as a personal friend of Jimi’s, is also ecstatic to partake in his sixth Experience Hendrix Tour. The stance he takes is akin to that of a missionary: “Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest guitar players ever and we all need to keep his music alive.” "It's an honor to celebrate Jimi Hendrix's legacy and greatness with so many other amazing players, who have become great friends and family to me,” echoes Zakk Wylde. “His influence and inspiration will forever be undeniable!" Platinum-selling solo artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been on every Experience Hendrix Tour since the beginning. “As far back as I can remember, I’ve been listening to Jimi

Hendrix,” said Shepherd.

The Fox to welcome 2CELLOS

2CELLOS, music’s most electric and dynamic instrumental duo, announce the dates for their North American tour which kicks off in January. They will make stops in 41 cities including Atlanta, New York, Boston, Detroit, Nashville, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City with a stop in St. Louis at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $59.50, $49.50, $44.50, $34.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-5341111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Propelled into international fame in 2011 after their version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” went viral the Croatian cellists, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, continue to wow their fans with dynamic music videos and covers of today’s most classic and popular songs. Most recently their Baroque inspired, yet high octane head-banging video of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” garnered over 45 Million views to date. The duo returned to their rock roots on their recently released, critically acclaimed, third album Celloverse. 2CELLOS playing style has broken down the boundaries between different genres of music, from classical and film music to pop and

rock. They have no limits when it comes to performing live and are equally as impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out. They have sold out shows around the globe and also performed with Sir Elton John as part of his band, as well as opening his shows to rapturous acclaim.

Trump meets with black pastors at Trump Tower

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump says his New York meeting at Trump tower with a group of black pastors was "amazing" and resulted in "lots of good ideas." But there was no group endorsement as the campaign had signaled last week. The meeting was organized with the help of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, pastor Darrell Scott, who heads New Spirit Revival Center. Scott, a Trump supporter, says more than 100 pastors had what he called "a wonderful time." But both Scott and Trump declined to say how many plan to make endorsements. Scott said some had "to go pray about it." Some of the ministers, who have been criticized for attending the meet-and-greet, said they were surprised when it was billed as a Trump endorsement.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A federal judge has again delayed a trial for a man accused of shooting and killing nine people at a church in South Carolina. Defense attorney David Bruck said Tuesday that attorneys are still reviewing evidence against Dylann Roof, who faces dozens of federal charges in the slayings of parishioners at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church during a Bible study in June. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel had moved the trial from October until January. Tuesday, he postponed the trial again, without setting a date.

Trump has drawn criticism recently for retweeting an image of inaccurate statistics that vastly overrepresented the number of whites killed by blacks, among other errors. Scott blames the "liberal media" for depicting Trump in a way that he knows not to be true.

Dining Delights

Bill Roseberry/The Edge

The peanut butter and jelly pancakes from County Seat Cafe in Edwardsville. Below, the restaurant at 316 South Buchanan St.

County Seat Cafe in Edwardsville By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge I decided to stay close to home recently and feast at a fairly new Edwardsville restaurant — County Seat Cafe. County Seat opened in 2014 at 316 S. Buchanan St. and has been offering affordable meals to the community ever since. My recent visit was with my mom. I'd been here before, but the nice thing about County Seat is it's still evolving and there are new, imaginative specials available to try. I decided to test out one of those specials on the County Seat menu while I was there, the peanut butter and jelly pancakes. They like to show a little creativity at County Seat and I like that. Don't listen to your parents kids, it's fun to play with your food, at least when you're cooking. When my selection arrived, it was comprised of two large pancakes, covered with whole peanuts and of course peanut butter and jelly. The peanuts were a nice touch, but I expected the pancakes to be a little fluffier with a heartier taste. They were decent, but did haven't the rich buttermilk flavor I was hoping to get. The star of the whole meal was the peanut butter and jelly. The peanut butter was unbelievably creamy with a fantastic burst of flavor. The jelly was of the grape variety and was very fresh and delicious. If you like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches then this is a great avenue to take on your pancakes. It's something I'd never tried before, but is a great addition to pancake creations. I think a flavorful blueberry jam to accompany the peanut butter would be a nice change of pace to test out, too.

Mom went a more traditional route for her order, going with fried chicken and french fries. Unfortunately she wasn't too impressed with her meal. She thought the chicken was a little bland. If we had one knock it was the amount of time it took us to get our food. We had an extremely long wait and it wasn't very busy on our trip. Despite the long wait, the service

at County Seat was outstanding and it had been on previous visits, too. The staff is always friendly, cooperative and goes above and beyond to make your meal an enjoyable one. Though we were a little miffed over our wait, our sensationally friendly server went the extra mile, adjusting our bill and zealously apologizing for our inconvenience. She was great and tempered the

annoyance of our delayed meals. In County Seat's defense, I haven't had to wait that long on other visits. A s f o r t h e m e n u , t h e re i s plenty to chose from. There's a starter menu, soups, salads, an extensive breakfast menu, a slew of quirky burger selections, classic sandwiches and a portion called “county plates.” Since I went with a creative pancake choice, I'll start off hyping

December 17, 2015

the pancake portion of the menu. It's pretty extravagant. There is the pineapple upside down pancakes, with brown sugar, caramelized pineapples, caramel sauce and a cherry to top it off. The caramel apple pancakes include, spiced apples, caramel sauce and chopped nuts and the cinnamon roll is cooked with a cinnamon and brown sugar swirl and topped with cream cheese and caramel sauce. County Seat offers a couple of horseshoes if that's your thing, including a breakfast shoe. The burgers will catch your a t t e n t i o n . T h e re ' s t h e d e e p fried bacon cheeseburger. I will obviously have to return for that beast. The peanut butter jelly time burger sounds good, along with the fried pickle cheeseburger, the slinger burger and the barbecue pineapple burger. And if you're not familiar with a slinger, County Seat offers one you can try. It consists of two pieces of bread, two burger patties, chili, hash browns, cheddar cheese, diced onions and two sunny side up eggs. That's right up my alley. AS for ambiance, County Seat is a great place for families, with plenty of booths and large tables. It's large, spread out, comfortable and laid back. Price-wise it's really affordable. For a double stack of specialty pancakes it's only $5.99. The fried chicken and fried pork chop dinners are the most expensive items on the menu, costing $13.99 each. Learn more by visiting County Seat's Facebook page. I think County Seat is still finding its niche, but it's got a good template with its creative fare. Give it a try next time you want a cheap, creative and quiet meal. It's a spot worth visiting when you gotta eat.

Dining Delights The Ege's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill 215 Harvard Dr. Edwardsville Be prepared to wait when you visit this new hot spot in Edwardsville, but it's worth it. Make sure to check out the gator bites, they are fantastic. It's alligator meat fried in a corn meal breading. The catfish fillets are fried in the same corn meal breading and equally as good. There are also gator tacos and don't miss “Crabby Monday's Crab Leg Special. A little pricey though. Chubby's Warehouse Bar & Grille 1022 E. Broadway Alton Cheap and delicious. The burgers are fantastic here and extremely affordable. They also have a good buffalo chicken sandwich and good tacos. Maybe the best thing they offer is their sweet corn nuggets, you can't go wrong with them. It's cash only so make sure you grab some before you go. Only knock is the service could be a little friendlier. Mission Taco Joint 908 Lafayette Ave. Soulard If you like quirky and eclectic twists on Mexican fare then this is the place for you. There are great tacos and burritos like the Brah'rito with carne asada and chipotle bacon. It is freakin' huge, too. They also have torta selections on the menu and a cool carne asada fries choice in the appetizers. Good beer selections there also. Huddle Bar & Grill 1101 Caseyville Rd. Suite J Caseyville It may look like your average bar, but get a load of the menu and quickly find out it's not. The food is definitely worth a

1870 E. Edwardsville Rd.

visit. Steak night is a definite time to go. Get a New York strip steak and potato for $9.99. Check out the peanut butter bacon burger, the asparagus in balsamic sauce and the sweet potato fries drizzled with honey, all are delicious choices. Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices. Cunetto's Corner Cucina 114 N. Main St.

Edwardsville This hidden little corner Italian restaurant deserves some love. It offers a quaint dining experience in its small setting, great for a date night or low key dinner. The fettuccine carbonara is really tasty and the salads are fantastic. Check out the fried portabella mushrooms on the appetizer menu, too. Sauce on the Side 903 Pine St. St. Louis If you like calzones and creativity in your food then put this on your food bucket list. They stuff just about anything you can think of inside a calzone, including eggs, salami, pineapples, figs, chorizo, eggplant and zucchini to name a few. Good sauce selections served on the side. Great craft beers available also. Joanie’s Pizzeria 2101 Menard St., St. Louis Soulard A stable in the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis, this is a spot that offers great pizza and Italian dishes along with great drink specials and entertainment. Visit prior to a Cardinals game or other various events in St. Louis, eat dinner,  and ride

Wood River, IL 62095

the free shuttle to and from the event. Los Tres Amigos 1011 Century Dr. Edwardsville The Jose Morales Taco is the highlight of this Mexican Restaurant. The deep fried goodness of the taco is topped off with Parmesan cheese to give it that special flavor. Check out the rest of the extensive menu for other great Mexican dishes, too. Wang Gang Asian Eats 1035 Century Dr. Edwardsville This is a hip, fun spot if you’re into Asian cuisine. It’s an Asian fusion restaurant that puts unique spins on classic Asian dishes. Check out the lettuce wraps, the fried calamari and the stir fry selections and don’t miss out on the restaurant’s own line of sodas which are also great. It offers some healthy choices, too. Brickhouse Tavern & Tap 2 McBride and Son Center Dr. Chesterfield This is a great place to take a date or have a good time with a group of friends. Fun and creative menu and huge line of beers on tap and in bottles. Enjoy your meal sitting on a couch in front of a fire. The real all-star here are the bacon and jalapenó deviled eggs on the appetizer menu. The LuBar & Bistro 911 Fairfax St. Carlyle Pretty cool place to chill out and have a good dinner. The dining area is separated from the bar, as this establishment is split into two levels. The LuBar nachos are arguably the best nachos I’ve ever had and the pulled pork sandwich is a winner. Check out the full breakfast menu also and don’t forget to order some ice cream from the ice cream bar before you leave.
