The Alton Landing Jazz Quartet

Alton Landing Jazz Quartet grounded in friendship By STEVE HORRELL Of The Edge

T

he four jazz musicians that accompanied the Great Rivers Choral Society last Friday are hardly strangers.

Now in late middle age, the members of the Alton Landing Jazz Quartet share a web of interconnectedness that dates back to high school. It begins with guitarist Tim Jarden. He learned to play music at the age of 10. A couple of years later, an uncle showed him the basic chords, and he was hooked. At 16, Jarden joined the Alton High School Jazz Band, which was directed by Pete Basola, who was seven years his senior. Today, Basola plays tenor and soprano saxophones for the ALJQ. “It seemed like we were always good friends,” Jarden said following their holiday concert at Lewis and Clark’s N.O. Nelson campus in Edwardsville. “He was my teacher, but he was just always ready to help. And it just grew into a wonderful friendship.” Around that time, Basola was also directing the jazz band at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Jarden enrolled there after high school and eventually earned a music education degree and a masters’ degree, with an emphasis on jazz education. Basola moved on to become vice president of enrollment at Lewis and Clark Community College. Jarden followed

December 23, 2010

him there as well, and eventually he taught Jeff Walker, now the drummer and percussionist for the Alton Landing Jazz Quartet. The same sort of relationship that exists between Jarden and Basola and Walker also exists between Jarden and Kenny King, the group’s electric bass player. King also attended SIUE, graduating with a degree in music education. The four have played in a variety of local bands over the years, though it wasn’t until March of this year that they came together as the Alton Landing Jazz Quartet. “We just have a ball playing,” Jarden says. “It just clicked.” Jarden, who began his musical career as a trumpeter, plays the guitar synthesizer now. It blends piano, organ and vibraphone with traditional strings - kind of like the Casio keyboard, except it’s for guitar,” Jarden explains. When Basola isn’t playing the sax, he plays an electronic wind instrument, also known as an E.W.I. Jarden describes it as a “crazy-looking recorder.” The E.W.I can produce flute sounds and a variety of other sounds resembling a saxophone, trumpet, or trombone. “People look and say ‘Where’s the flute coming from? I hear a flute, and there’s no flute. I hear a piano, and I don’t see a piano.” During their concerts, lays the groundwork for a song with the melody, then hands the tune off to each other for solo forays. On Friday, Basola played an extended, crowd-pleasing saxophone solo on “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

The group played five other Christmas classics while the choir rested. At other times, it was the quartet that lounged around while the choir went it alone, singing tunes such as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “Jingle Bells.” The crowd also participated in a sing-a-long to “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Near the end of the concert, both groups joined together for “White Christmas.” These days, Walker works with his father at Walker Masonry, in Alton. Basola is retired recently from Lewis and Clark and runs Pete Basola Photography, also in Alton. Jarden continues to direct the Jazz Band at LCCC and he serves as band director at Alton Middle School. King is band director there as well, and he also teaches a music technology course there. In the class, King encourages his students to experiment with sounds using a software program known as Acid Pro that utilizes loops and reverbs and tremolos. The class has access to a 27-station computer lab. Jarden marvels at how the members of the Alton Landing Jazz Quartet have managed to hang together through the years. “It’s just been this comedy of . . . not really errors . . . “ he said, searching for the right phrase, . . . “but that’s that beauty of small town America. You meet people, you reconnect with people, and there’s things that just kind of pop up that, years later, you never would have expected would have happened.”

Alton ready for eagle watchers It’s time to hop in the car and follow Mother Nature’s Highway to Alton this winter for an eagle watching adventure. Every January, experts anticipate nearly 1,000 American Bald Eagles will migrate to the region, many reclaiming their winter nests along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway from Alton to Grafton and Pere Marquette State Park. With the help of the Alton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau’s 2 0 11 E a g l e Wa t c h e r ’ s G u i d e , visitors can plan their own eagle watching adventure and take part in numerous eagle watching events and tours happening throughout the region. New this year, the recently opened Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower will offer visitors new eagle viewing opportunities. Eagle watching has been an attraction for the last decade all around Alton, and every year new attractions and events enrich the

December 23, 2010

experience for visitors wishing to catch a glimpse of these magnificent birds. In May 2010, the new Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower opened in Hartford, Il., offering panoramic views of the confluence of the Missouri & Mississippi rivers from platforms at 50, 100 and 150 feet. These same viewing platforms will yield a new perspective for visitors wishing to see eagles in flight. In addition, the Tower will feature an “Eagles Over the Confluence” event every Saturday & Sunday from January 8, 2011 through February 20, 2011, with featured activities each week including artisans, kid’s crafts, photography workshops and more. For more details, go to www. ConfluenceTower.com. Back again this year, visitors can take part in a little Eagle Caching as they head out to visit the various “Eagle Watching Hot Spots” featured in the 2011 Eagle Watcher’s Guide. Within the guide, information can be found about the caches and clues on where to find them. Like geocaching, each cache has a set of coordinates that are plugged into the GPS navigator and used by the explorer to search for the treasure. All the information needed, including the clues, coordinates and GPS rentals, can be found at www. VisitAlton.com/EagleCaching, or by visiting the Alton Visitor’s Center at 200 Piasa St. in Downtown Alton. Visitors can head out to view the eagles on their own or take part in some of the traditional eagle watching events in the region, including eagle meet & greets, eagle watching tours and live bird demonstrations. Events take place nearly every weekend and throughout the week, from January through March. Plus, most of the events in the region are free of charge. A full list of events can be found online at www.VisitAlton.com and in the Eagle Watcher’s Guide. For visitors wishing to make eagle watching a winter getaway, there are numerous eagle packages and specials available at hotels and bed & breakfast inns in Alton, Grafton and Elsah. Alton, Illinois is the #1 destination for eagle watching in the St. Louis region. It is the place to be for the best eagle events and the largest concentration of American Bald Eagles in the state of Illinois. Every day is a great day to plan on making your escape this winter to see the eagles in Alton. For the latest eagle watching updates or to receive your free Eagle Watchers Guide, call 1800-ALTON-IL or go to www. VisitAlton.com.

People People planner Botanical Garden looks toward a TREEmendous 2011 The Missouri Botanical Garden is celebrating the United Nations (U.N.) International Year of Forests in 2011 with a TREEmendous! year of activities highlighting the real value of trees and the critical role they play in our lives. Experience an exhibition of non-traditional tree houses, take part in a communitywide tree hunt, celebrate National Arbor Day with a weekend treethemed festival and more. Visit www.mobot.org/treemendous for more information. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s 79 acres are home to more than 5,300 trees, representing over 580 tree species. Some are noteworthy for their size – the Missouri-native western soapberry (Sapindus drummondii), possumhaw (Ilex decidua) and white basswood (Tilia heterophylla) trees at the Garden all hold records as Missouri State Champion Trees, and the white basswood is listed on the American Forests® National Register of Big Trees. Some are noteworthy for their history – a handful of bald cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) and Osage orange trees (Maclura pomifera) date back to the lifetime of Garden founder Henry Shaw, and an unusual golden larch (Pseudolarix amabilis) traces its roots back to the 1904 World’s Fair. Still others are noteworthy for their characteristics, such as the huge Scotch elm (Ulmus glabra) near Tower Grove House, with its gnarled trunk and branches so large and heavy that they need support wires, or the towering “living fossil” dawn redwood trees (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Regardless of their individual distinctions, all trees have one core commonality: they are vital to human life on Earth. “ Tr e e s p l a y a n i n c r e d i b l y valuable role in our lives,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Not only do they provide the basis for some of the most important ecosystems on Earth, but they also provide so many of the resources we need for life. They transform the sun’s energy into carbohydrates; they absorb and store carbon dioxide, helping to combat climate change and give us the oxygen we need to breathe. They provide us with timber, food, fibers, medicines, shelter and a multitude of other goods essential for life. During a year when the U.N. is raising awareness about the critical importance of conservation and sustainable development of forests, it is appropriate that the Missouri Botanical Garden also highlights the importance of trees and forests and the threats they face, as well as pays homage to the

Religion

There's a reason for the season I at times find myself feeling quite frustrated because I can’t control my mind and I find that I am worried about things intellectually I know are not the things that should be filling my mind. I know the blessing of Christmas. I have heard the Christmas story since I was a small child and it never fails to touch my heart and leave me with a feeling of gratitude and awe. But…and this is a big but. I don’t believe I’m alone in this dilemma. The question that I struggle with is this, “If I truly know the importance of Christmas and the meaning of this special day, why do I fret about shopping, wrapping gifts, baking cookies, entertaining, decorating, and on and on. I find myself thinking there

Doris Gvillo is no way that I am ever going to get everything done. And at the same time, my head is struggling to keep me focused, my heart is saying, “Don’t forget the meaning of Christmas.” Life seemed very simple when I was a child and simply ‘enjoyed’ the day. Then I married and we began our home and our traditions. Because we had very little, our holiday was simple. Now with all the messages delivered via newspapers, ads, radio and television, I feel as though everything is chaotic. I see the beautiful decorations but I bemoan the fact that I am seeing Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving is

over. I find myself struggling not to focus on the commercial and material emphasis we now place on this holiday. I know it’s great to shop and get a bargain, but in reality while that might be nice, it isn’t necessarily a celebration for the birth of Jesus but a chance to bring a gift to someone we love. I don’t think giving the gift is wrong, but I do think that we can get so overwhelmed with all of what we call ‘preparations’ that we lose sight of and gratitude for the gift we were given by the birth of that tiny baby so many, many years ago. If you should feel I am lecturing you, please feel assured that most of this message is directed to myself. For some reason, this

year I feel inundated, tired, and a little sad. I understand the ‘sad’ part because my husband died on December 23rd and so the holiday has a different feel as it intermingles joy and sorrow. But the problem is similar to that old saying, “the hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” I am sure that Christmas will arrive whether I have lots of cookies baked, and trays to be given away prepared or not. My tree and decorations are now up. The shopping isn’t done but I guess it will get done somehow. One of the days I was going to devote to tasks has now been assigned as a time to watch my great grandson at his swimming lesson. How could I miss that? A few less cookies will be the trade off and I think I’ve made the right

decision. Christmas is a time when we not only focus on family and friends, but there is a spirit of caring and giving that reaches out to others. Christmas is a season that brings renewal to our spirits, a feeling of love that spills over into the lives of others, and a spirit of peace seems to permeate our lives. Well, I will close for now. As the season draws closer and the days more hectic, let’s vow to take time to readjust our thinking and focus once more on the real reason for the season…the birth of a Savior. There could never be a greater gift. And it is a gift that is there for all who will open their hearts and accept it.

ACLU in Tennessee warns schools across state about holiday celebrations

holiday celebrations. In a letter to the 137 public school superintendents, the group reminded administrators that holiday celebrations focusing primarily on one religious holiday amount to a school’s unconstitutional endorsement of religion. The ACLU said in a news release that it was responding to

numerous complaints from families about such school activities. Hedy Weinberg, ACLU executive director in Tennessee, said it is especially important for people to embrace the constitutional guarantees of the First Amendment in order to ensure that religious freedom flourishes. The letter cites several U.S. Supreme Court decisions about the matter.

Religion briefs Church financier sentenced in Indiana SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) — A judge sentenced a church financier to 54 years in prison Tuesday for pocketing millions of dollars that investors believed would be used to build churches. Special Judge Dena Martin ordered former pastor Vaughn Reeves to serve consecutive sixyear terms for each of nine fraud counts, in a scheme that cost about 2,900 investors $13.1 million. Among aggravating factors, Martin found Reeves targeted people over age 65 and used religion to influence them. Reeves’ attorney plans to appeal. Investigators said Reeves, 66, and his three sons used their now-

defunct company, Alanar, and sales pitches that included prayers and Bible passages to dupe about 11,000 investors into buying bonds worth $120 million secured by mortgages on construction projects at about 150 churches. Instead, Reeves and his sons diverted money from new investments to pay off previous investors, pocketing $6 million and buying two airplanes, sports cars and vacations. Prosecutors pointed to the case as a prime example of affinity fraud, in which scammers prey on people who share a common interest, such as religious affiliation, ethnicity or age. Reeves’ sons are scheduled to go on trial in March.

The Arts

“The Fall of Heaven” Walter Mosley’s classic will be presented at The Rep By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

A

powerful, contemporary and evocative new play by bestselling author, Walter Mosley, is coming The Rep’s Mainstage after the first of the year. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) is presenting “The Fall of Heaven” by Walter Mosley. Based on his novel “The Tempest Tales,” this production will be performed on the Browning Mainstage of the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves, Jan. 5 through Jan. 30, 2011. When streetwise Tempest Landry is accidentally killed in a shooting, he finds himself at the Pearly Gates. Sentenced to hell by Saint Peter for his misdeeds, Tempest has only one thing to say: No. Hell, no. So it’s back to earth for a second chance that leaves the fate of heaven and hell resting in his hands. Accompanied by an

angel named Joshua, Tempest is faced with the error of his ways but refuses to take responsibility. In a tangled web of temptation and relationships, “The Fall of Heaven” is a daring, imaginative and fanciful tale that brings heaven and hell together to take on Tempests’ challenge. The world premiere of “The Fall of Heaven” opened at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in Cincinnati in January, 2010, to widespread praise and was the winner of Six Acclaims Awards. A celebrated crime novelist best known for his Easy Rawlins series of mysteries, Walter Mosley has written more than 34 critically acclaimed books that have been translated into 21 languages, including “Devil in a Blue Dress.” He is the winner of numerous awards, including an O. Henry Award, a Grammy and PEN America’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Mosley has achieved success in literary fiction, science fiction, political monographs, a young adult novel, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine and The Nation, among other publications. The cast of “The Fall of Heaven” at The Rep is Corey Allen as Joshua Angel, Kenya Brome as Branwyn Weeks, Bryan Terrell Clark as Tempest Landry, Jeffrey C. Hawkins as Basil Bob and voices of Saint Peter/Mr. Chin/Mr. Akbar, Rachel Leslie (last seen in “You Can’t Take It With You”) as Alfreda/Darlene/ Ensemble, and Jerome Lowe and Borris York as Ensemble. Rep Associate Artistic Director Seth Gordon directs The Rep’s production of “The Fall of Heaven.” The creative staff also includes Robert Mark Morgan, set designer; Myrna Colley-Lee, costume designer; Michael Lincoln, lighting designer; Rusty Wandall, sound designer; Champe Leary, stage manager; and Tony Dearing, assistant stage manager. Walter Mosley will be in the lobby of the Loretto-Hilton Center on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a book signing. “The Tempest Tales” will be available for sale on site from Pudd’nhead Booksellers. Pre-orders will

also be available for signed copies of Mosley’s newest book “When The Thrill is Gone” coming out in March. Due to time constraints, only books purchased through Pudd’nhead Booksellers and The Rep will be signed. If you have questions about the book signing, call The Rep’s Marketing Department at 314-968-4288. For more information about The Rep’s production of “The Fall of Heaven,” including a guide introducing the characters, plot and background on the play; photos related to the production; and more, visit The Rep’s comprehensive public Web site at www.repstl.org. This performance is not for children. It is suggested for audiences over age 18. Curtain times are Tuesday at 7 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday at 8 p.m.; selected Wednesday matinees at 1:30 p.m.; Saturday evenings at 5 p.m.; selected Saturday nights at 9 p.m.; Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.; and selected Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. Ticket prices start at just $15 (previews) and $18.50 (regular performances). The Arts National Endowment For the Arts announces grant to the Sheldon Art Galleries Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, announced on November 23 that the Sheldon Art Galleries, St. Louis, Missouri, has been approved for a grant of $25,000 to support the exhibition and catalogue Ralston Crawford and Jazz. The Sheldon Art Galleries, part of the Sheldon Arts Foundation in St. Louis, was recommended for a grant as part of the federal agency’s first round of fiscal year 2011 grants. In total, the

Arts Endowment will distribute $26.68 million to support projects nationwide. The exhibition supported by the grant includes approximately 120 photographs, prints, paintings and films, many never before published, and will be shown in The Sheldon’s Gallery of Jazz History and Gallery of Photography from September 30, 2011 to January 7, 2012. An exhibition catalogue, a lecture, educational programs, and concerts

will be presented in accompaniment. Orleans was photographic. He began to work seriously with the medium after 1949, a time that also coincided with visits to the city, where jazz musicians and their environs became an important part of his life and work. A significant portion of the exhibition will be devoted to his photographs, which were important to the artist both as an independent form of artistic expression, and as a servant to his work in other media.

Family Focus

F o i sh i n’ G s ’ t Le Collinsville to host outdoor sportsman’s show By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

T

here are two great reasons for checking out the 2011 Let’s Go Fishing Show at the Gateway Center in Collinsville in January. First, kids should learn how to fish. It is a great activity that everyone in the family can participate in. It is a wonderful way to get the kids out of the house and away from the video games and computer. There is something about fishing with your kids that makes a connection that is like no other.

Many times, child advocacy experts suggest that if you want to help give your kids a firm foundation, take them fishing. The other reason to go is that it is a great way to get out and do something fun in the middle of the winter blahs. The Gateway Center in Collinsville is a very accessible location with free parking, unlike many of the other shows that are put on this time of year at larger

venues. The Let’s Go Fishing Show will be on Friday, Jan. 7, Saturday, Jan. 8, and Sunday, Jan. 9, and it hopes to attract anglers with some new bait. The public event, geared for the angler or anyone interested in learning more about fishing, has consistently attracted an enthusiastic audience due to the “fishing tackle super store” reputation. Now, in its 18th year, the show is adding some magic in addition to all the fishing gear. New, in 2011, will be the entertaining “Fishin’ Magicians.” The act features Amy Short and Steve Craig, with a humorous, fishing-themed magic show using

traditional props and fishing equipment. The Springfield, Mo., area duo have entertained audiences at boat shows and entertainment venues all across the country, and appeared on the ESPN cable television network. Audience participation plays a key role in their antics and the shows are designed to get laughs from adults as well as youngsters. Let’s Go Fishing Show manager Steve Lengyel says he wanted to

bring in something that would appeal to the women, children and younger audiences. “We want the family to come out and enjoy the Fishin’ Magicians, and see all the displays of interest. Maybe they will get more interested in fishing. Not much is being done to attract young people to the activity today, and those young people are the future of the fishing industry.” Other exhibits of interest to youngsters will include live owls and other birds shown by Treehouse Wildlife Center, from Dow, games operated by area fishing clubs and the popular fishing simulator video game provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. For the first time, the Department of Natural Resources and the Conservation Police will have their special display trailers on hand, showcasing reproductions of fish and wildlife found in the state. There will be 30 seminars on Bass, Crappie, Catfish, Walleye, Trout, Muskie and other species. If you are one to go fishing and come home empty handed, now is your chance to find out how to hook those elusive fish. These seminars are conducted by local experts, as well as national and regional professionals. Bass Fishing pros featured this year are Kelly Jordan, Dan Morehead and Terry Scroggins. Jordan and Scroggins will be competing in the Bassmasters

Classic scheduled for February in Louisiana. This is the biggest tournament in Professional Bass Fishing. All seminars and activities, including the “Fishin’Magicians” shows are included with admission. Tickets will be available at the door with regular prices $7 for adults; $3.50 for ages 6 to 15; children 5 and under are free. On Friday, seniors age 60 and above will be admitted for only

$4. Parking is free. Hours are Friday: noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ;Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Gateway Convention Center is located 12 minutes from downtown St. Louis, on Route 157, just north of I-55/70, in Collinsville. For a full schedule of seminars and information, call 288-9852, or visit the Web site at www. letsgoshows.com.

hocolate. Just hearing the word will usually perk up most taste buds and visions of the dreamy sweet treats begin dancing through your mind. Very few people dislike chocolate and some people even claim to be addicted to it. There have been many studies done that have proven chocolate to be an aphrodisiac or even a mood calmer for many people. Certain chemicals in chocolate – such as phenyl-ethylamine (PEA), tryptophan and anandamide – have been shown to work in the brain to give off good feelings. Some studies have shown that you have to eat a lot of chocolate to have the benefits of the chemicals, others have shown that eating it in moderation can have a real health benefit. Whatever the reason that people as a whole enjoy

chocolate, it certainly is a favorite guilty pleasure and certainly a popular gift to give and receive. Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate has been making chocoholics and chocolate lovers very happy since 1981. They began in St. Louis, handcrafting premium chocolates from recipes collected worldwide. With the headquarters still located in downtown, they have since expanded to eight locations, including Edwardsville, inside the Dierberg’s store at 6667 Edwardsville Crossing Drive, and in Shiloh at 3960 Green Mount Crossing Dr. Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company has won numerous awards for: Best Chocolate, Best St. Louis Chocolate Company, Best Chocolate Booth, Fastest Growing Franchise, and Best Selection of Chocolates. If you are seeking ideas for your family and friends, Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate is your last minute answer to

cover everyone on your list. For your mom or woman in your life, choose something indulgent and sweet, but keep calorie watching in mind. Some good examples would be a dark chocolate holiday assortment, or some of the new fresh-fruit “Dreams.” The wonderful handdipped strawberries are always a great idea, These are loved by all and dipped fresh daily. For your dad or man in your life, gravitating towards chocolate with nuts is always a good choice. Men seem to prefer milk chocolate over dark. Pecan nut bark is very popular with the male tasters, and the

Mavrakos Marshmallow Pecan Bar (heavenly hash) is another favorite. If your man has a sense of humor or has been bad, chocolate coal is a fun whimsical idea. Teachers are another tough one. They are always flooded with impractical gifts or gift cards that aren’t very personal feeling. Something every teacher loves is chocolate. The “Santa pants” are fun, filled full of chocolate and sweet holiday snacks. Solid chocolate is always fun or if you have already bought that gift card and want to make it memorable, add a chocolate apple or some holiday Oreos. Teens and tweens are not dark chocolate fans and don’t want things that make them feel like a child. There are all kinds of chocolate novelties like chocolate baseballs, cell phones, ballet slippers, music notes, etc. For a senior gift recipient,

Mavrakos has a line of chocolates that has a nostalgic feel with a hand-made assortment that spans 100 years of history. They will surely enjoy some past memories that some of these flavors conjure up. If you are looking for Christmas cookies that say something different, Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate even has an assortment of chocolate covered Christmas cookies. Whatever your budget, whoever the recipient, the associates at Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate are happy to help you pick out great gift ideas that will be a big hit and put a smile on everyone’s face. QuickGlance Movie Reviews

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”

C.S. Lewis began the third book in his Narnia series: “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it.” Nothing in the three inspiration-less films adapted from Lewis’ series ever rises to the wit of that simple line, though the latest comes closest to the spirit of the original — arguably the most fun of Lewis’ seven Narnia tales. But spirit is something that has been consistently lacking throughout this film franchise, which has now gone through two studios (previously Disney, now Fox) and two directors (previously Andrew Adamson, now Michael Apted, with Adamson a producer). “Dawn Trader” finds two of the Pevensie clan, Lucy (Georgia Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes), sailing the Narnia seas with Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), and with their bratty and unfortunately named cousin, Eustace (Will Poulter), in tow. Lewis’ Christian themes are worn more openly here than in the last installment. But the religious allegory (which will go over the heads of most young viewers, just as it did young readers) isn’t what sinks the Narnia movies. It’s a lack of imagination — not exactly a sin, but still lamentable. RATED: PG for some frightening images and sequences of fantasy action. RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Company Men”

Previous movies about the country’s recent economic recession, such as “Up in the Air” and the documentary “Inside Job,” have championed the regular folks who got shafted and heaped due scorn on the corporate moguls who benefited nonetheless. “The Company Men” asks us to feel some sympathy for the guys on top — the executives who’ve luxuriated in Porsches and private jets and $500 lunches, and are suffering the pain of having all those goodies taken away. It’s a tough request from John Wells, the man behind “ER” and “The West Wing,” here making his feature writing and directing debut. The strength of the all-star cast — Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones and Kevin Costner — makes “The Company Men” vaguely engaging, but even

watching these veterans and heavyweights banter and bounce off each other can’t convince us that the characters themselves are compelling. It’s not that being privileged makes them boring; being two-dimensional does. Despite the massive life changes thrust upon the film’s central figures, their arcs still feel predictable. “The Company Men” focuses on three men, specifically, hit by downsizing at a Boston-area manufacturing conglomerate. RATED: R for language and brief nudity. RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Fighter”

Mark Wahlberg produces and stars, David O. Russell directs, but supporting player Christian Bale owns this real-life tale about boxer Micky Ward, who rose from his blue-collar roots and overcame ugly family squabbles to earn a title shot in his mid-30s. Bales dominates the action, much as Heath Ledger’s Joker took over “The Dark Knight” from its hero, Bale’s Batman. The film itself is a strange stew, a raw, genuine portrait of working-class stiffs one moment, a shrill-borderingon-caricatured comedy of family discord and vulgar people the next. Wahlberg as Ward, Melissa Leo as his mother and Amy Adams as his girlfriend are excellent. Yet Bale is truly extraordinary as Ward’s older half-brother, Dicky Eklund, a flamboyant but self-destructive former boxer who trains his sibling to climb to heights he never reached himself as his life unraveled amid crack addiction. Gaunt, wiry, always moving, always talking, Bale casts aside the stoicism of so many of his roles and becomes a lovable wreck. As with Ledger’s Joker, it’s the stuff that Academy Awards wins are made of. RATED: R for language throughout, drug content, some violence and sexuality. RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

“The Tempest”

A pedigreed cast, led by the formidable Helen Mirren and including David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Djimon Hounsou and Alfred Molina, cannot save this misguided mess. It’s just too weird. And it’s a waste of one of Shakespeare’s richest comedies, the play that’s considered his last. You want to admire director Julie Taymor for taking such risks, for trying to do something different with a classic work. And in the wildly visual style that’s become her trademark through stage productions like “The Lion King” and films like “Frida,”

“Across the Universe” and a previous Shakespeare adaptation, “Titus,” she upends and reinvents the play on many levels. The sorcerer Prospero is now Prospera, whom Mirren plays with a growl and a refreshing lack of vanity; at 65, she goes makeupfree, an exciting display of her natural beauty. But while Mirren is always more than reliable — and she clearly knows her way around Shakespeare — the gender-bending of the lead role feels like a gimmick and provides no greater meaning to the text. Here, Prospera uses her mystical powers to force her enemies to shipwreck on the island where she’s been in exile for years with her daughter, Miranda (Felicity Jones). Too often the visual effects look like something that would have seemed high-tech during the early days of MTV. RATED: PG-13 for some nudity, suggestive content and scary images. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

“The Tourist”

It’s probably best to head into this with the mindset that you’re going on an actual vacation yourself. If you’re in the mood for mindless, escapist fun — dazzling scenery, elegant evenings, decadent hotel suites and expensive clothes — you’ll be fine. There are all the obligatory chases and shootouts you’d expect in a romantic action caper, but you never get the sense that anyone’s in real danger. There are twists, but they won’t make you think too terribly hard, and in the end you will have devoted fewer than two hours of your life to a decent diversion. Watching Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie bounce off each other isn’t torture. Pretty people went to Venice and made a pretty movie. Joining them won’t be thoroughly satisfying, but it won’t kill you, either. It’s probably also best not to let the esteemed pedigree of the people behind the movie trick you into expecting something way more substantive or meaningful than you’re going to get. “The Tourist” is the first Hollywood film from director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, whose debut, the excellent German film “The Lives of Others,” won the foreign-language Oscar in 2007. It comes from a script that’s credited to Henckel von Donnersmarck, Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects”) and Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”). These acclaimed talents — Oscar winners, all — have given us something unabashedly light, frothy and ridiculous — almost knowingly preposterous. RATED” PG-13 for violence and brief strong language. RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two and a half stars out of four.

Movies Carrey charming in latest role By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press Jim Carrey gets to show off the best of what he can do in “I Love You Phillip Morris,” both the physical comedy he made his name on and the unexpected tenderness that has crept into his later, more dramatic work. Here, he uses that whole range to play a gay con-man driven by love, giving a consistently charming, breezy performance in a film that frequently feels inconsistent in tone. The directing debut of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote the awesomely inappropriate “Bad Santa,” veers a bit jarringly between its humorous, serious and romantic moments. But Carrey, as real-life scam artist Steven Russell, is never short of fascinating to watch. The story is so incredible, you’re constantly wondering what outlandish scheme he’ll perpetrate next. (A quick intro to the film assures us: “This really happened. It really did.”) Ficarra and Requa’s script, based on the book by former Houston Chronicle investigative reporter Steven McVicker, follows Steven Russell’s many creative efforts to procure money, then break out of jail each time he’s caught. But before embarking on that life of crime, he’s a mildmannered husband and father, living a proper Christian life and working as a police officer. Only when he has a serious car accident does he realize he’s been living a lie all this time: He’s actually gay. This inspires him to leave his wife (Leslie Mann), move to Miami, take up with a hot young man and a couple of miniature pinschers and live the kind of party-boy life

Associated Press

In this film publicity image released by Roadside Attractions, Jim Carrey is shown in a scene from “I Love You Phillip Morris.” that requires several credit cards (and fake IDs) to support. Carrey’s charisma and huge smile are on full display in these scenes, as his character is finally enjoying himself in a way he never has before. He’s probably just a good guy doing bad things, and it’s hard not to root for him to succeed. His many cons and frauds land him in the state p e n i t e n t i a r y, t h o u g h , w h e r e he runs the place in no time, unsurprisingly. But Steven himself

is surprised to find the real love of his life there: Phillip Morris. Ewan McGregor plays this sweet, soft-spoken pretty boy with great delicacy and heart, and he knows enough to step aside to play the straight man, if you will, to the larger-than-life Carrey. From there, Steven keeps finding ways to break out and make more money, only to get thrown back behind bars again. He talks his way into a courtroom where he pretends to be a lawyer

and somehow acquires a job as a c h i e f f i n a n c i a l o ff i c e r, b u t various suicide attempts land him repeatedly in the hospital, the location of the film’s many voiceovers (which feel forced and don’t work). He does it all for Phillip, hence the title, and Carrey and McGregor are awfully cute together. One of the great strengths of “I Love You Phillip Morris” is the matter-of-fact way it handles their relationship; it’s never precious or mawkish, and

frequently the humor between them is quite raunchy. It’s easy to see why Steven is drawn to Phillip, but it should be clear to Phillip eventually that he’s dealing with a sociopath, someone who’s manipulating and deceiving him just as much as the other men who’ve taken advantage of his innocence throughout his life. The real-life Steven is serving a 144-year prison sentence in Texas, w h e re h e ’ s o n l o c k d o w n f o r 23 hours a day. But for a while

The last gasp of the “Narnia” series? By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The height of the holiday season is upon us now. What better time to release the next film in the “Chronicles of Narnia” series? “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” opened to largely negative reviews this past weekend, and to a box office that was much less than kind. The movie is very pretty with most of the sequences dominated by striking visual effects elements. It is allegedly being simultaneously released in the 3D format (aren’t most films now?), though I took in just a regular old showing. I think the problem is with the sluggish pace and source material. I feel for Disney as I’ve long speculated that this series will not see all seven stories make it to the big screen. This is likely the last, though I speak only as a sage of children’s literature and have no knowledge of the inner workings of the actual Hollywood Machine. The events of “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader“ immediately follow those of the franchise’s last entry, Prince Caspian, making it chronologically the fifth Narnian adventure of C.S. Lewis’s stalwart series. Amid the horrors of World War II in England, Edmund (Skandar

There is no explanation for why they are forced to live with cousin Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter), a whiny pig of a lad, but this story quickly sets off for the high seas. While getting a tongue lashing from the naughty, selfabsorbed Eustace about the folly of their Narnian stories, Edmund, Lucy, and their irritating relation are drawn into a painting of a distant ship on the high seas. When their heads break through the water, they find that they’ve re-entered their favorite magical world and been rescued by the Dawn Treader, the finest ship in the fleet of now King Caspian X (Ben Barnes, even better looking than in the last movie). Also aboard ship is Reepicheep, the beloved warrior mouse and my own favorite character. The rogue is a major player now and is voiced this time around by Simon Pegg. The castaways become embroiled in a desperate search of the Lonely Islands, the last Narnian outpost, for seven missing lords dispatched by Caspian’s father many years earlier. During the search we are entertained by periodic

battles between Caspian’s crew and the Pevensie children against slave traders, ghosts, a dragon (sort of), the dark magic of Tilda Swinton’s White Witch, and a wickedlooking sea monster. Their hunt does not find all of the missing lords alive, but does reunite their magical swords, gifts of the lion Aslan (voiced proudly by Liam Neeson), that saves the realm from certain peril. It’s Aslan that I feel will eventually be the downfall of the novels’ development front. He fiercely guards the Pevensies and Eustace from afar and always gallops in to save the day in divine fashion. It can come as no surprise to anyone that’s being paying attention that Aslan is stand-in for Jesus Christ and that Narnia is his heaven. The Christian subtext, if you follow through to Book 7, “The Last Battle,” ceases to be subtext. I challenge that the studios are too afraid to face religion head on in a tentpole release and will simply shut it down rather than chance a big budget on it. I hope I’m wrong. ••• “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” runs 118 minutes and is rated PG for some frightening images and sequences of fantasy action. I give this film one star out of four.

Helen Mirren bending genders TORONTO (AP) — Helen Mirren is a shape-shifter, says director Julie Taymor, and the actress has extended her metamorphosing talents to changing the gender of not one, but two, well-known authority figures. First, Mirren stars in Taymor’s new film adaptation of “The Tempest,” opening Friday, playing sorceress Prospera rather than the traditionally male Prospero of Shakespeare’s play. Then, Mirren steps into John Gielgud’s shoes in next year’s remake of “Arthur,” playing the tough old nanny and substitute parent to a rich, drunken, womanizing man-child. At 65, most actresses are resigned to fringe roles as grandmas and spinster aunts. Mirren followed 2006’s “The Queen,” which earned her the best-actress Academy Award, with a stretch of work as busy and varied as any in her 45year career. Mirren reprised her longstanding TV role as police detective Jane Tennison in “Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act.” She hurtled into the action game with roles in Nicolas Cage’s “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck’s “State of Play” and Bruce Willis’ current hit “Red,” a caper about aging spies. Her upcoming Holocaustvengeance tale “The Debt” features what Mirren calls her “geriatric fight,” a close-quarters death match with an old man in a nursing home, defying Hollywood convention that action roles are for the young. “The perception of being older is changing,” Mirren said in an interview at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, where “The Debt” premiered. “It’s a lot to do with the fact that the so-called baby boomers are coming into that age, and they’re refusing to let go of life, or you know, they’re refusing to let go of being in the center of life. ... “They will not step aside. We’ll have to eventually, because we’ll be too old not to,” Mirren said. “But people used to consign themselves to old age quite early, and I think people don’t do that anymore.” Also this year: Mirren had a second film at the Toronto festival, the crime story “Brighton Rock,”; she starred as a brothel owner in husband Taylor Hackford’s “Love Ranch”; and she did a voice role for the animated “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.” That all followed another bestactress Oscar nomination for 2009’s “The Last Station,” in which she played Leo Tolstoy’s imperious wife. “I keep saying to my husband, ‘It’s all going to stop very soon, you know, Taylor,”’ Mirren said. “It will inevitably. But you know, while it’s not stopping, I’m happy to go along

December 23, 2010

with the flow.” “The Tempest” proved a star-crossed meeting of minds. Mirren had been watching a stage version when it occurred to her that Prospero — a single parent raising a daughter on a remote island while orchestrating revenge and redemption for old enemies — could be played as a woman without changing a thing. She mentioned the idea when she met Taymor, creator of the Broadway adaptation of “The Lion King.” Taymor, who had directed stage productions of “The Tempest,” already had been thinking about a film version with a woman in the lead. “It was hers as soon as it came out of her mouth,” Taymor said. “There’s a vulnerability she brings to the maternal part of this in a way you’ve never seen with Prospero. And you believe in her intelligence, as well. What’s behind those eyes, those incredible eyes. ... “She can do anything. Looking at the range of her work, she’s played persons of power, persons of magic. She’s played a queen — she’s played a couple of queens, so she’s definitely a formidable presence.” It was not Mirren’s first genderbending “Tempest” role. As a child at her all-girls school, Mirren played wild man Caliban, a role done by Djimon Hounsou in Taymor’s “Tempest.” The film also features Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, Alfred Molina, Alan

Cumming and Russell Brand, who has the title role opposite Mirren in the remake of “Arthur.” Mirren began her career with Shakespeare, playing Cleopatra in a 1965 production of “Antony and Cleopatra” for Britain’s National Youth Theatre. She later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and made her film debut in a 1968 adaptation of the playwright’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She worked steadily in British film and TV through the 1970s before breaking out internationally in the 1980s in such films as “Excalibur,” “2010,” “The Mosquito Coast” and “White Nights,” directed by future husband Hackford. The first of her four Oscar nominations came for supporting actress on 1994’s “The Madness of King George,” with a second supporting-actress slot coming for 2001’s “Gosford Park.” “The Tempest” gave Mirren the opportunity to play a truly meaty Shakespeare role for an older actor, a rarity for women. “As you get older, as an actress specifically, the roles in Shakespeare as everywhere else tend to sort of die away,” Mirren said. “It actually takes you a long time to learn how to do Shakespeare. You’re not good at it when you’re young. You get much better at it when you get older, but the annoying thing as an actress, as you’re suddenly

getting into your powers with your Shakespearean abilities, the roles disappear. “You’ve got Cleopatra, you’ve got Gertrude (Hamlet’s mom), which is not a good role, you’ve got Lady MacBeth, which is not a good role,” Mirren said. “Queen Margaret (a central figure in some of Shakespeare’s historical dramas). But none of them, they’re not the roles like the men have. It’s not King Lear.” Since Mirren is breaking gender boundaries, how about a “Queen Lear”? “That’s very different. You’d

have to change so much. King Lear is such a male character, getting drunk with his all his followers. Women don’t do that,” Mirren said. “Lear is such a paternalist sort of male, and that’s his downfall, his feeling the need for domination, control. When he foolishly gives that away and is powerless and then is mistreated, that’s when he goes mad. I think a woman would be far more adaptable than Lear. A woman wouldn’t go mad. A woman would be practical and find a way ’round it.”

Travel briefs Group grades Tahoe Sierra ski areas on green scale R E N O , N e v. ( A P ) — A n environmental report card from conservationists says Sierra ski resorts are continuing a trend toward going green. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Squaw Valley USA placed first and Alpine Meadows ranked third in the Ski Area Citizens Coalition rating of 82 western ski resorts resorts. Sugar Bowl and Boreal also rated “A,” while “B” grades went to Kirkwood Mountain, Homewood Mountain, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe. Northstar-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain received “C” grades. The annual evaluation found improved environmental performance for a fourth year in a row. California Ski Industry Association chief Bob Roberts says that reflects a growing priority by Sierra resorts to increase energy efficiency, recycle and take other steps to protect the environment and address climate change.

NYC museum will explore scent as art form NEW YORK (AP) — The nose rarely figures in the sensory experience of a museum visitor. That is about to change at one New York City museum. The Center of Olfactory Art dedicated to scent as an art form was launched at the Museum of Arts and Design on Thursday. The center will present its first exhibition, “The Art of Scent, 18892011” next November, examining the reformulation and innovation of olfactory works by some of history’s best-known perfumers through 10 seminal scents. An audio guide, narrated by Burr, will explain the context in which they were created. Each perfume will be identified only by artist and year to allow visitors to appreciate each as an independent work. And don’t expect fancy fragrance bottles, brand perfumes, design graphics and packaging to be part of the exhibit. Visitors to “The Art of Scent” will experience each fragrance along a 6-foot-wide path that will follow the curvature of the gallery wall where buttons on a specially-design atomizing machine will release “the work of art.” “What we’re going to be able to do ... with the center is place scent directly in the mainstream of art history and demonstrate that it is the equal of paintings, sculpture, architecture and all other artistic

media,” said Chandler Burr, the former fragrance critic of The New York Times whom the museum said it hired as its — the nation’s — first curator of olfactory art. More a curatorial department within the museum than a separate entity, the museum created the new center because “scent is a really interesting part of the world of design,” museum director Holly Hotchner told The Associated Press. It fits the institution’s DNA as a “sensuous, sensory-orientated museum” where patrons can touch and feel many of the objects. And of course, smell is as much a part of the senses,” she added. With the center ’s launch, the MAD is the only museum to study fragrance as art. A museum in Grasse, France, focuses on the history of perfume and another perfume museum in Madrid “is entirely about bottles,” said Burr, who is also the scent editor at GQ magazine and the author of two books on scent. Among the featured perfumes is “Jicky,” one of the first to use nonorganic ingredients, and pave the way to the modern era of fragrances. Designed in 1889 by Aime Guerlain, Burr called it “the first work of modern perfume art ... and the first major perfume to use synthetic molecules that freed the scent artist from nature.” “ J i c k y i s o n e o f t h e g re a t neoclassicist, romanticist works of olfactory art of the late 19th century,” he said. “It’s an expression in this artistic medium of exactly the same aesthetic concern and intellectual concern and the artistic style used by (Jean-Auguste-Dominique) Ingres in painting and used in music by (Frederic) Chopin.” Scent artists or perfumers, colloquially known as “The Nose,” are fragrance composers or painters. Among the masters featured in the exhibition will be Jean-Claude Ellena, whom Burr called “one of the most important artists alive in this medium.” “He is intentionally wiping away any reference to nature, effacing and erasing natural landmarks. He is doing work that is cutting edge in it’s forcing us to experience and rethink works of oflactory art,” he added. Other leading perfumers whose work will be shown include Olivier Cresp, the creator of “Angel,” and Alberto Morillas and Annie Buzantian whose “Pleasures” made the use of a carbon dioxide extraction that’s considered a major technological advance in the art of perfume-making. A pivotal role of the center also will be to present public programs, including informal discussions with scent artists and perfume industry executives talking “about the tension between olfactory works of art and perfume as product,” said Burr. Future shows will include a

retrospective on Ellena’s work; a technology exhibit demonstrating the use of synthetic molecules in perfume making; one on the raw materials that constitute fragrances such as Ugandan vanilla and Peruvian pink peppercorn. Many of the exhibitions will travel to other museums, Burr said. The new center also will have an artist in residence program in which perfumers will work and be observed in MAD’s artist studios creating new fragrances over a period of several months.

Feds close access to skiers near Telluride TELLURIDE, Colo. By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

Winter is here. Maybe a little sooner than we would like, but we need to embrace it and find some great activities to do to break up the cabin fever blues. One of the best ways to enjoy the winter weather is to take part in winter sports. Whether you are a skier, a snowtuber or a snowboarder, believe it or not, you have options in Missouri that don’t require a plane trip or a week’s vacation to enjoy these activities. Missouri has two, wellestablished ski venues; one north of Kansas City, the other on the western fringe of St. Louis. Both are perfect for a quick jaunt or a fun packed weekend, regardless of your ability. Just pick your ride of choice, from downhill or cross-country skis, to snowboards, to tubes, and enjoy a refreshing day outdoors. In northwest Missouri, Snow Creek is about 10 minutes north of Weston; a half hour south of St. Joseph. Snow Creek is celebrating 25 years of providing winter fun with a family atmosphere. Their 60 state-ofthe-art snowmaking machines can blanket the hillside with 12 inches of snow in 24 hours. The slopes have a total vertical drop of 300 feet, a 700 foot long tube area and a terrain section for snowboards.

The ski lodge holds a bar, cafeteria, equipment rentals, and a first aid station. Certified instructors offer skiing and snowboarding instructions (all levels and ages; private or group). Beginning in late December (weather permitting; it has to be cold enough), all trails at Hidden Valley are lighted every evening for night skiing, with midnight skiing on Fridays and Saturdays and limited late-night sessions some Sundays. Day tickets, group and senior rates, and season passes are available. After a day on the slopes, it’s about 10 minutes to Eureka, where you can relax and spend the night at Holiday Inn at Six Flags, featuring a heated indoor pool, arcade games, a bar and

On Campus LCCC offers ballroom dance courses New in 2011, whether you’re a single or part of a couple, you can learn to heat up the dance floor with Corporate and Community Learning’s ballroom dance courses. Starting in January, Ballroom Dancing: Level 1, Ballroom Dancing: Level 2, Swing and Latin courses will run from Jan. 22-May 21 in the music building atrium on Lewis and Clark Community College’s Godfrey campus. The same courses will also be offered at Leclaire Elementary School in Edwardsville from Jan. 23-April 10. Instructor Bill Trent of Moon Light Dancing Studio is from Fairview Heights, but teaches at several studios in the Metro East. He has been dancing most of his life, a habit he picked up from his parents, who both danced as a hobby. Trent received his formal training

through Arthur Murray Dance Studio and has been teaching professionally since 1969. He has worked at Arthur Murray as well as Fred Astaire Dance Studio and Scott International Studio. To keep up with his education, he continues to attend various dance seminars. Most people taking the classes are interested in basic social ballroom dancing, although Trent also has a background in competition dancing. Participants do not need to bring their own supplies, although good shoes with vinyl or leather bottoms are helpful, he said. “Each session lasts six weeks,” Trent said. “I can teach anywhere from basic beginners who’ve never had a dance step in their life all the way up to making them look like ‘Dancing

with the Stars.’” “These classes are designed for everyday people who want to become more comfortable on the dance floor,” said CCL Coordinator Katie Sledge. “Bill is a wonderful instructor who works with each individual or couple at their own pace.” Trent joined the teaching staff of CCL at Lewis and Clark Community College in the wake of the passing of previous instructor Pauline Cavalie, and has worked to keep the program going since. “We are very sad about Pauline’s passing and will miss her dearly. But, in her honor we decided to keep the ballroom dance program going at the college,” Sledge said. “It is very beneficial to members of our community.” Trent, who had never met Cavalie face to

face but knew of her work, stepped in and took over classes. “We were competitors. She kept me on my toes, knowing she was out there,” he said. “Stepping into her shoes was a little bit challenging because I didn’t know what to expect from the students that had taken lessons from her in the past, but once I got to meet the students and found out what she had taught them and what I teach, the rapport got better quickly because Pauline and I were pretty much on the same sheet when it comes to teaching.” The cost for each course is $38 per person. For more information contact Katie Sledge at (618) 468-5750, or to sign up for a class, contact the Enrollment Center at (618) 4687000.

What is won ton? Wrap up more than gifts this holiday season By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge

A

sian food is one of my favorite cuisines, but I have wondered many times how they make the outside coverings for won tons, egg rolls and crab rangoon. They are crispy and light and always delicious. Frieda’s, Inc., which provides a lot of produce for local Schnuck’s stores, is passionate about sharing new ideas and encouraging novice chefs to try new items. This time they are offering suggestions on how to use Won Ton Wrappers and Egg Roll Wrappers. You can even make dessert dishes with them! Following are a number of ideas and information on using them for some of your holiday cooking. As you wrap your holiday gifts, remember the gift of food deliciously wrapped in won ton or egg roll skins. These convenient a n d

versatile paperthin sheets of dough are ready to wrap around your favorite vegetable and meat mixtures for delicious Asian-style dumplings and egg rolls. Homemade won tons and egg rolls are the perfect party appetizer during the holidays. Now available in Schnucks produce departments. (Frieda’s Egg Roll Wrappers are packed in 1 lb. packages, with approximately 20 sheets (6.5inch square) of thin raw pastry dough. Won Ton Wrappers are packed in 12 oz. packages with approximately 52 sheets (3.5-inch square) of dough. ) What is a Won Ton? A won ton – or wonton – is a type of dumpling found in various Chinese cuisines and often filled with minced pork or diced shrimp with vegetables. They are commonly boiled and served in soup or deep-fried. In North American Chinese cuisine, won tons are often served without filling and eaten with a sweetand-sour sauce. You might also find deep-fried won tons filled with cream cheese and crab – called Crab Rangoon. In addition, won ton wrappers are becoming a popular item in American restaurants to make fresh ravioli and tortellini. What is an Egg Roll? Egg rolls are an appetizer which were originally eaten in East Asia but have spread throughout the

world as a staple of Asian cuisine. It is said that the spring roll led to the creation of the egg roll. In China, d u m p l i n g s o r s t u ff e d d o u g h products were recorded as early as 618-907 AD, about the same time they were introduced to Japan. U s e e g g ro l l a n d w o n t o n wrappers to make Asian-style appetizers filled with meat, seafood or vegetables. Filled egg rolls and won tons may then be boiled, steamed or deep-fried. Preparation Ideas: • Fill egg roll wrappers with a combination of shredded cabbage and meat, dip the dough in egg or an egg wash, then deep-fry or bake. • Use won ton wrappers to make steamed dumplings filled with vegetables, meat or seafood. • Use won ton skins to make fresh ravioli, such as butternut squash and sage ravioli. Then pan fry to brown, steam to finish and top with a sage brown-butter sauce. • To seal the edges of the dough, dip your finger in water and run across the dry dough edges, then compress. Gently push out any air bubbles. • Try filling wrappers with fruit and baking or frying for a

delectable dessert. • Cut dough into thin strips and bake into crispy won ton chips to top salads and desserts. Season with salt or sugar. Here’s a sweet and unique way to use egg roll wrappers: Banana-Filled Egg Rolls With Custard Sauce 4 large bananas 1/2 of a 16-oz pkg. Frieda’s Egg Roll Wrappers (8 wrappers) 2 oz. (2 squares) semi-sweet baking chocolate, chopped; or 1/4 cup chocolate chips; or 1/4 cup Frieda’s Crystallized Ginger, chopped Cooking oil for deep-frying Custard Sauce: 1 beaten egg 2 cups milk 1/3 cup sugar 2 tbsp. cornstarch 1/8 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla Peel bananas; quarter lengthwise. Lay egg roll wrappers on a flat surface with point facing you. Arrange 2 banana quarters on center of skin. Sprinkle with 1/2 tablespoon chocolate or crystallized ginger. Fold and seal as directed on egg roll package. In a wok or deep skillet, pour oil 2 inches deep. Heat to 365 degrees. Deep-fry one at a time, for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until deep golden brown. Drain well on paper toweling; keep warm in a 250-

Gifts for people who love to eat Punctuate your food gifts with lots of calories By J.M. HIRSCH Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) – This holiday season, show your love by showering those you care about with calories. That’s right. This year I went in search of the most calorifically delicious treats suitable for gift giving. Because face it, when it comes to diets, December isn’t a particularly virtuous time of year. And if we’re going to indulge, it might as well be on the really, really good stuff. So here is my roundup of some truly wonderful giftworthy treats. Dufflet Small Indulgences This collection of intensely rich sweet treats comes from Dufflet Rosenberg, a Toronto pastry chef who has been earning accolades for more than 30 years. Her focus is on hand-crafted treats made from premium ingredients, and it shows. And now you don’t need to head to Canada to find out for yourself. Rosenberg recently launched three lines of packaged g o o d i e s — C h o c o l a t e Tu m b l e s , C r a c k l e s a n d M i l k Chocolate Morsels. Each is available in three flavors and all are delicious. However, for hands-down awesomeness, it’s the Tumbles you want, particularly the pecan and cherry brandy variety. The hazelnut and coffee liqueur Tumbles are pretty fine, too. For more information or to order, visit the company’s website, http://www.duffletsweets.com . The goodies sell

for $15 to $18.

Norman Love Confections This guy is the Bono of the chocolate world. And his treats — mostly filled chocolates and truffles — are beyond delicious in a toe curling sort of way. They also are stunningly gorgeous. Artwork sort of gorgeous. So much so you might pause on the way to devouring them. Love releases new flavors each year. These generally are sold mixed into the general population of his chocolates, but you can order a special 10-piece box that highlights the 2011 flavors — California honey, hazelnut praline truffle, hot dark chocolate, mango, peaches and cream, peanut brittle truffle, peanut butter banana, rum cake, sweet tea and tiramisu. Favorites were California honey and peanut butter banana. The 10-piece box of new flavors can be ordered from his website, http://www.normanloveconfections.com . It sells for $22. momofuku milk bar David Chang has developed a cult-like following f o r h i s m o m o f u k u e a t e r i e s i n N e w Yo r k , a n d w i t h good reason. His pie and cookie haven known as milk bar serves some almost painfully good treats, such as compost cookies, which contain pretzels, potato chips, coffee grounds, oats, butterscotch, chocolate chips and graham crumbs. Strange, of course. And that’s the point. But so addictively delicious. Then there is crack pie, which fills a toasted oat crust with a gooey butter filling made from sugar, brown sugar, cream, egg yolks and vanilla. Until recently, you needed to be in New York to get these treats. But Chang has launched an online shop — http:// momofukustore.com — from which they can be ordered.

Cookies, including the compost variety, sell for $10 for a tin of six. Pies sell for $44 per 10-inch pie. Mayonnaise Because nothing says happy holidays like a big old jar of mayo, right? No, seriously. Real foodies will dig this. Just as every other food has gone artisanal, so has mayonnaise. This is a long way from those giant tubs or — dare I even say it? — squeeze bottles on the bottom shelf at the grocer. This is a condiment of the highest order. Check out the too cute Jme offering from Jamie (get it?) Oliver. Among a new line of goodies he is launching in this country is Marvellous Mayo, a rich whipped spread made in the United Kingdom from free-range eggs, extra-virgin olive oil and grapeseed oil. It is rich and tangy without being cloying, as most commercial mayonnaise tends to be. Jme Marvellous Mayo is available for $14.95 for a 12.2ounce jar from http://www.williams-sonoma.com . d’Affinois cheese Take a brie, then make it four or five times creamier and richer and about 10 times more guilt-inducing. You’ve got yourself d’Affinois, a soft cow’s cheese from France. Produced by Fromagerie Guilloteau, d’Affinois has an intense and smooth creaminess with a gentle sweetness and it will rock your notion of great cheese. It can be tossed with pasta, baked onto a pizza, or simply slathered onto a baguette and drizzled with honey. It also is wonderful eaten straight accompanied by Champagne and fresh fruit. This cheese is available at most good cheese shops, as well as grocers with cheese counters. It also is available online from Murray’s Cheese — http://www. murrayscheese.com — which sells it for $16.99 a pound.

Choosing the perfect dessert wine NEW YORK (AP) – You already know that stressed spelled b a c k w a rd s i s d e s s e r t s . S o , i t only makes sense that dessert wines come to the fore during the holiday season. What better time to kick back with a glass of something sweet? But many people tend to skirt the dessert wine shelf, with its unfamiliar names and grape varieties. “It’s not chardonnay. It’s not pinot noir. It’s not cab. Purchasing them is more of a leap of faith,” says wine expert Karen MacNeil, author of “The Wine Bible.” In truth, there’s nothing to worry about, says MacNeil. “Dessert wines as a category are probably the most crowd-pleasing wines there are. You really almost can’t go wrong.” Another good point — a little goes a long way. Dessert wines often are sold in half bottles, which are sufficient to serve a fair-sized crowd since the wines are richer and more concentrated in flavor. MacNeil likes them for when you don’t have time, or room, for dessert. They’re also a good match for a cookie, a crisp alternative to a heavy dessert. “I think chocolate chip cookies and Madeira are probably the single best combination in the world,” says MacNeil,

chairwoman of the wine department at the Culinary Institute of America’s Napa Valley branch. Still puzzled about pairings? A l i n e B a l y, w h o s e f a m i l y makes Chateau Coutet, a golden dessert wine from France, likes t o k e e p t h re e t h i n g s i n m i n d when looking for the sweet spot in dessert pairings: Complement, c o n t r a s t a n d / o r t e x t u re . Yo u don’t have to match all three; just try to keep one in mind. “I’m not an expert chef,” Baly points out, “so this is a question that I’ve had to deal with, especially when I’m traveling and presenting Coutet to other people. I look at my wine, which is very fresh, very crisp, and I’m looking for something that has a lot of freshness, a sweet factor that will complement the style of the wine.” The second option is to go for a contrast with something savory. This is the kind of combo that makes chocolate-covered pretzels a deliciously salty-sweet treat. “People like opposites in their mouths,” Baly says. If you’re taking the texture approach, you might look at a food like turkey, slightly dry and chewy, which goes surprisingly well with a full, smooth wine such as Coutet, which comes from

the Sauternes region of France. In fact, savory pairings are among the most successful dessert wine partners; Sauternes and blue cheese is a classic. To get its sweetness, Chateau Coutet relies on a kind of mold known as Botrytis cinerea (aka the “Noble Rot”). This fungus develops on the fruit through the harvest to concentrate the sugar as well as the aromas while maintaining the freshness of fresh fruit by allowing winemakers to pick earlier than a late-harvest method. Other dessert wines are made by adding grape spirit (alcohol) to the wine part way through to prevent further fermentation and retain some natural grape sugar. Among the latter category are muscat and topaque wines from Australia, known as “stickies” Down Under because of their sweet nature. (Topaque is a new name Aussie producers came up with for tokay after Hungary reasserted its right to use that name.) To p a q u e i s m a d e f r o m muscadelle grapes and is fortified with grape spirit, says Rutherglen producer Colin Campbell of Campbells Wines. Muscat from t h e R u t h e rg l e n re g i o n i n t h e Australian state of Victoria is made from a grape called “muscat

rouge a petit grains” and is made in the same way as Topaque. When pairing muscat, the older and more complex wines require stronger food, says Campbell. But young muscat and topaque work well, chilled, as an aperitif, pairing with classic starters like prosciutto and melon and cheese, especially washed rind cheeses.

Let us do the wrapping for you!

Also try it with honeyed ice cream or even poured directly over ice cream. The bottom line in pairings is to look for balance. You don’t want a tooth-achingly sweet, syrupy dessert and a heavy, syrupy wine. As Baly puts it, “the dish can’t be louder than the wine and the wine can’t be louder the food.”

Dining Delights

Cookbooks make great holiday gifts NEW YORK (AP) – Got an uncle who insists on hunting wild mushrooms or butchering his own steak? There’s a cookbook for that. What about a working mom hoping to please picky palates during the daily dinner deadline? We’ve got her covered, too. From DIY fanatics to busy families, even science geeks, this year’s crop of cookbooks offers something for everyone. Here are a few standouts to jumpstart your gift-giving: FOR DEVOTED FOODIES WHO HAVE IT ALL • Amanda Hesser insists her “The Essential New York Times Cookbook” (Norton, 2010) is not an update of the Craig Claiborne classic, but rather a

new chronicle of the best New York Times recipes dating back to 1850. Dense, serious and heavy enough to double as a weapon, the book covers everything from Claiborne’s cheese fondue and vichyssoise a la Ritz to watermelon gazpacho and the pork belly tea sandwiches at a hip New York restaurant. • As a practical follow to his bestselling appeal to eat for the health of ourselves and the planet, New York Times columnist Mark Bittman offers “The Food Matters Cookbook: 500 Revolutionary Recipes for Better Living” (Simon and Schuster, 2010). The plant-heavy recipes focus on fast, easy dishes such as vegetablerich green gumbo and chickpea salad

with cashew chutney, as well as more involved undertakings such as Mexican-style fruit salad with grilled fish and chili-rubbed pork with warm pickled vegetables. Organized and accessible with recipe lists and pantry advice, the book will appeal to folks who love to cook and want to feel healthy (and virtuous) while doing it. • Rounding out the New York Times trifecta is Molly O’Neill’s “One Big Table” (Simon and Schuster, 2010), a collection of 600 recipes that chronicle the diversity of American food. It features recipes taken from pit masters, farmers, home cooks and chefs around the nation. FOR THE BAKER

• Cookies, cakes, pies and breads. If you can make it with flour it’s in “The King Arthur Flour 200th Anniversary Cookbook” (Countryman, 2010). This indispensable volume from the famous flour miller also covers the science of baking, from primers on leavening, to notes on flaky pastry and hints for homemade pasta. A goto reference for all baking needs. • Your sweet-tooth baker will appreciate “Sweet Chic” (Ballantine, 2010), a collection of confections by the owner of New York bakery Tribeca Treats. From easy homemade thin mints to multi-stepped masterpieces like sweet-and-salty cake (think devil’s food with caramel and fleur de sel), the recipes in this

book are great for a rainy day or a big celebration. FOR DIY TYPES • Arranged by season for the freshest results, “The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook” (Andrews McMeel, 2010) contains more than 100 recipes for jams, preserves and marmalades. Winter brings marmalades of bergamot, pink grapefruit and Meyer lemons. Spring is time for rhubarb, strawberries, apricots and other eagerly anticipated fruits inventively combined into rosemary-scented marmalades, orange-blossom jams and good old solid preserves. This book is ideal for anyone who dreams of “putting up” their favorite fruits.

Shopper Stoppers The storm is over...

send a hug. The young and young at heart will love this charming bouquet starring an adorable little snowman hugging a giant snowball (next year’s candy dish). Beautifully make - and priced - this delightful gift is definitely a Santa special.
